Believe it or Not !
BenDover 11-07-05, 10:31 PM I got a chance to see another GW SXRD at my local BB this past weekend. Again didn't have much time as I had the ankle-biters with me, but I did manage to use the set mounted controls to change the settings to at least standard and then pro...that alone helped a bit since they had it set on vivid and who knows what other params were tweaked from their default settings. Anyhow, while still not equaling the quality of the Q006 (I really think that high gloss protective screen makes a world of difference), it looked much better than my last experience...I should add that the lighting was much more subdued this time too.
Someone commented recently that you couldn't play the where are the pixels game on these sets but I have to say that the pixels were smaller and even less distinguishable...I mean with my nose literally up to the screen I had a difficult time making out the pixels!
I was expecting more on the black levels but again, I was viewing an untweaked set.
Umr, got your PM and saw your post here in the thread. I hope to be able to get you over for a calibration but it is still a bit too far out for me and December is usually a crunch time with many of my clients. Best I can say is I'll contact you as the date approaches and if you still have a slot open I'd love to submit my system to your expertise and experience.
Sorry for any typos but using my blackberry and no time to proof as my train is pulling into the station!
Watched the end of "My Best Friend's Wedding" last night in HD. I used to use this as a reference DVD, but hadn't seen it in some time. First thing I noticed -- OMG, were cell phones really that huge? Second thing: WOW -- this film has fantastic images and is very well photographed, and the last third of film is especially remarkable. There's a scene, shot at night, inside a white wedding reception tent. Most of the guys are wearing tuxes, there are lots of white and pastel dresses, and the sky outside is inky black. In one scene Julia Roberts is sitting in the tent wearing a lavender gown, surrounded by white, and her (well-lit) hair is set against a background of that perfectly black sky. It's a medium-tight shot, and you can see every hair cleanly delineated against the black. Amazing; I've almost had my Q006 for a year now, and she continues to amaze me on a regular basis. I hereby nominate "MBFW" as the first QRCF (Qualia Reference Chick Flick"...

BenDover,
Hold out until just after the Army/Navy game. If umr is a bettin man, he’ll be hurtin for the extra money just after the game…… and you may get an Army discount. :D
Penton-Man 11-07-05, 11:40 PM against a background of that perfectly black sky.
This is where I see the worst macroblocking BAR noise with DVD's* on my 006 - which I'm hoping the Mosquito will cure.....along with Elmo runnin wild across the screen in his Dalmation suit.
*And to all those techno wizzes out there.....it aint the F-chip in my Panny DVD player as I'm runnin 480i via component into the 006 which should bypass any potential MB from the DVD player itself.

I am not a bettin man so I won't be hurtin for cash. Who knows Army beat Air Force after loosing since 1977. I believe miracles can happen twice in a year. :D
Watched the end of "My Best Friend's Wedding" last night in HD. I used to use this as a reference DVD, but hadn't seen it in some time. WOW -- this film has fantastic images and is very well photographed...It's playing again in HD: Nov. 19th on Showtime HD @ 6:05 PM (PST)...

No problem. Your odds are not looking good though. I already have most of the trip booked.
umr .... if you get close we can have a pint at Parkers. I'll even buy.
Thanks for the offer, but it does not look like I will be going that far west on this trip.
Algolih Update:
Initial DF are shipping late this month, with the remainder of the preorders shipping in December. The Mosquitos have beta shipped, they are just waiting on the feedback so the actual production units should ship around the same time.

I’m somewhat puzzled at the *new* debut dates as the HDMI Mosquito is simply a new generation thing……whereas the Dragonfly is a brand spankin new product from them.
What if the beta testers come back with negative feedback ??????
Penton-Man 11-09-05, 08:39 PM BTW, I personally apolgize for turning this thread into another episode of "General Hospital" WITHOUT the hot nurses/direction givers...
True Qualians needn’t apologize as we all hold each other’s best interests at heart……whether directly through precisely on-topic posts or indirectly through off-topic real-life experiences.
Plus that, it seems we’ve got more of a sense of humor because if you submit similar posts on other threads discussing “Elite” products……. the silence can be deafening….are you listening 79brt? :D
Just goes to show Qualians have a great taste in video devices, a great sense of humor with complimentary social skills and they tend to be a well-adjusted lot ! :p
Plus that, I think this is the best one-stop shopping thread on the forum. In other words, I don’t CARE how the Pio 59 avi looks on another display other than the 006…..and I don’t CARE how the Algolith Mosquito or Dragonfly looks on any other display other than the 006…..because so much of this crap seems to be display and calibration dependent.
But I DO care how you’re right knee is doing as an empathetic fellow Qualian and as a potential Algolith buyer awaiting your physical capability to hook-up and review these products.
It’s all connected my man. Just like divedude’s pictures of the little fella and his girlfriend. :)

What if the beta testers come back with negative feedback ??????I don't get it myself, unless Algolith is small enough that the Dragonfly has been consuming all their resources -- a distinct possibility, though you wouldn't think it would take much to refit HDMI. I am really hoping these products pan out, but I have to say that the near total silence from Algolith as release dates get repeatedly bumped is NOT particularly confidence inspiring...
As for the Qualia Community thing -- I'll just say that out of all the electronics, motorcycle, automotive, and camera forums I frequent, this is by far the least combative, most harmonious, most productive of them all. A very good place to hang out, almost totally devoid of the rancor that destroys other threads. But then, we all drank the Kool-Aid, didn't we?

I had no idea a Qualia 006 would need one of these devices. Is the picture not good enough?

Perhaps you should also ask the same question to the 004 Qualians with their 30K front projectors (and other high-end projector owners) that have pre-ordered or are contemplating purchasing this video processor or……. the even more expensive Calibre Vantage-HD.

For some reason people seem to forget that the better the display device, the more you benefit from high-quality external processors. Wonder if those guys with G90s or GTT HT Reference 9s feel ripped off because they have to spend the Penton Paper on a Teranex to get the most out of their projector...

You are basically saying that the internal scaler/processor of the television is insufficient to obtain the best possible picture so you must buy an external one to compensate.
thesirjay 11-11-05, 01:44 PM You are basically saying that the internal scaler/processor of the television is insufficient to obtain the best possible picture so you must buy an external one to compensate.
Correct, while the internal scaler is BETTER than low end scalers it is not the best possible scaler. The scalers we have been anxiously awaiting were obviously not even available when they created the Qualia and we are all looking forward to seeing how much more we can do with the poor source material that we Qualians are forced to use as input. The old saying garbage in garbage out applies and although the scaler is well above average in the 006 we want to see every possible bit of performance out of our babies. Personally I can't wait until I can see this running with 1080P but sadly I doubt there will be enough source material for a long time.

The Q006 is the best picture out there right now, but by adding this device, we may discover something no one has ever erxperience yet.
Obviously Hugh, you are not an engineer, or if you are one, then I suggest changing careers. I am not one too, but I at least have the common sense to know that innovation never stops and that everything can be improved. Just the thought of improving this already fantastic TV fascinates me and others.

As someone who likes the best I will be extremely interested in how much actual improvement you are able to see with the scaler vs without. The problem is many people will perceive a difference due to the cost of their investment when one is not present. And as we all know preception is reality. An extra 4k is a lot to pay.

Penton-Man 11-11-05, 02:13 PM to obtain the best
The quest to achieve “the best” is always a never-ending on-going process that some people embrace……….especially those of the “elitist” mindset!
At this point in time, the theoretical benefits of the Dragonfly mated with the 006 would appear dubious………. as one could easily argue that any benefits that processor could deliver would be nullified when the display would have to change the output resolution from 1080i to 1080p.
But, funny thing about theories……..they are often proven wrong after real world testing.
Not to mention the fact that the elitist buyer could also move said processor downstairs in a year or two to his 1080p display that accepts its native resolution……and in the meantime enjoy any minimal benefits that the Dragonfly does produce.
You've got to think outa the box.

Marco,
The San Francisco area is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world and yes, there is a price to live here. As far as peace and harmony, we do have it here and it's up to us (actual owner's) to keep it that way.
Hugh,
The reason why I removed the stupid question remark was because there is no such thing as a stupid question! :D
Can you say "Buzz-Kill" boys and girls? Funny that some view a $10-13K display device as practically defective or woefully inadequate, even though it's scaling/processing was essentially state of the art in this category (RPTV) when it began to ship. The Mosquito/HDMI + Dragonfly combo should improve just about any set or projector with the resolution capable of showing the difference. This simply means that the Algolith combo is state of the art in external processors (if we're not counting the Teranex), and no manufacturer can offer a processor on a circuit board that matches the capabilities of the best external processors. Major "Apples vs. Oranges" comparison, or -- to quote Rev. Jackson -- "The Question Is Moot!"...
MotorMouth777 11-12-05, 02:54 AM Hugh, maybe you can help me because I think this one may be right up your alley.
The picture on a 19 inch Zenith I had from college is not up to snuff anymore. In your home theater seteup how do have your rabbit ears positioned, vertical or more horizontal like? Have you tried mounting an external antenna on the top of the trailer and did that help the picture any. Also, have you found if the foil balls work better on the ends or does Roseanne come in better when they are in the middle?
Thx
Now that's freakin funny man!!!!!

Interesting quote from an article on HDTV myths
"Lack of 1080p content is one reason some vendors are holding off on introducing 1080p sets. But those that are selling 1080p sets point out that some HDTV is broadcast in 1080i, and that such content arguably looks better on a 1080p set because less scaling is involved. (On the other hand, 720p content has to be scaled up for a 1080p set.) Here again, though, the capabilities of the human eye come into play: You'll probably notice the superior resolution of 1080p only if you sit very close to the set--or have an extremely large set."
Also been watching some demo Xbox 360 games, graphics look very impressive. I have mine reserved and can't wait to see it in action on the Q.
Oh, looky what I found!

Zechman, check out the heading: File Playback through IP Network -- this looks to have some interesting implications for both PC and Mac users. I should pick your brain regarding what is required to distribute video over a home network (Gigabit Ethernet + 802.11g)...
Zechman 11-14-05, 04:35 PM Oh, looky what I found! . . .
Very interesting--but of course it still suffers from the inability to store more than the 4.7G/9.1G DVD limit, unless you go network. That, in all likelihood, fails the Mrs. Zechman test.
The key thing you need to know about any form of ethernet is that above 30% utilization or so, your collision rates start to climb exponentially. In full duplex (meaning that transmitting and receiving don't interfere with each other), you can get more like 50%.
So with that in mind, for ~19.2 Mbps HD video, you'll really need to have wired 100Mb ethernet as a minimum--but it should work well in a switched environment. Gigabit ethernet is probably overkill, but would never be worse.
For wireless, don't bother with anything less than "G", and I wouldn't expect it to work smoothly unless there are no obstructions--remember that the published speeds of wireless networks are best-case-scenarios, wireless is not full duplex, and wireless can collide with other things besides bona-fide network traffic.
Also, for sustained transfers at those speeds, you start to need AV-rated hard drives in the computer. Not usually a big deal, but something to watch out for--this has been an ongoing problem with my Mac and the 1080p research. The Mac Mini I have uses a laptop-style 2.5" drive and those are almost never AV-capable.

I get TNTHD over cable and have the same problem for much of their programming. It was probably recorded in 4:3 and is now being stretched to fit a 16:9 format.
divedude 11-14-05, 07:05 PM brt3,
It has been two weeks since your knee surgery. How is it going? Has Elmo been helping :D
I am getting better, so I am cutting back on the Vicodin, down to three a day. How are you doing with the pain management?
...of course it still suffers from the inability to store more than the 4.7G/9.1G DVD limit, unless you go network. Thanks, Zechman -- my, what a big brain you have! You are a great resource on this thread, and I want to hear more when you have the Mac thing nailed. Here's what I'm trying to do: store all media (music, photos, video) on high-speed (video capable drives) NAS boxes that are centrally positioned at the network hub. Size and speed constraints may eliminate the video part of the equation, but the JVC HD/DVD box looked like a good piece to use as an interface everywhere I want to distribute video on the network. Looks like it can work with both computers and A/V gear...
Very good points on the differences between theoretical network speeds and what is achieved in real-world throughput -- especially regarding WiFi. This is why I'm using the Sonos system to handle the music part of the equation; though it's wireless it uses it's own proprietary network that is completely independent of WiFi. So far it's worked beautifully...
Question to discuss amongst yourselves: will a Qualia 006 fit into a conventional mobile home, or would one have to have a double-wide (assuming one could fit it through any available mobile home doors)?
DiveDude: glad to hear you're doing better and managing the pain with less Vicondin. I am starting to do much better; the first ten days were (for lack of a better term) quite interesting. As long as I can keep my knees iced (read: numb) I can do without much Vicodin. Once the cold wears off the pain increases exponentially...
Elmo does provide moral support, but is otherwise completely useless; my wife has NOT been able to get him to help with the constant ice refills or waiting on me. Damn dog ate my dinner when she tried to get him to bring it to me Lassie-style...
:D
divedude 11-14-05, 07:36 PM PM,
I know you and several other are interested in new toys us Qualians hook up to the 006. This weekend, I purchased the Pioneer Elite VSX-72TXV AV Receiver. I am very happy with it. It has HDMI in/out, 7.1 THX, XM and a iPod port. And it looks cool
I also got a new set of side speakers and new back speakers, and with the help of Mini Dive I plan to mount them Friday. So does anyone have a good suggestion for a really good THX movie?
PS. Just as a side note, I also got some new speaker wire and it was not made by Monster :p
So does anyone have a good suggestion for a really good THX movie?Dude -- congrats on the new toys! Two words for you: Blackhawk Down...
I'm new to the Q owner group and have a couple of questions. So far everything is great and as expected from all the forum posts.
1-Is the 4 inches of clearance against a wall really necessary? My unit is otherwise open air and not in any kind of enclosure. After having it on for several hours, the hot air coming from the right side seems to be going sideways and not up behind the back of the unit. It would be nice to reclaim say 3 of the 4 inches back for my living room.
2-It seems like the consensus for the HD DirecTivo unit is to leave it on 1080i. Has anyone found any applications that would be different, such as ESPNHD which I believe transmits at 720p?
3-I have an older Sony DVD player DVPS 7700 which has component out and was state-of-the-art 3 or 4 years ago. With the Q it has a great picture with its 480i output. Should I stick with this and wait for blu-ray, or is it a significant upgrade to get one of the Pioneer units?
Thanks in advance, JW

0-Welcome to Q006 ownership!
1-If you can spare the 4", I would leave it that way pursuant to the manufacturere's recommendation. I'm not aware of anyone doing laboratory testing, so there is no empirical evidence to demonstrate it will or won't make a difference in bulb life, etc.
2-I leave my HDTiVo at 1080i and have been equally pleased with the quality on ESPN, ABC and FOX, all of which broadcast at 720p. Remember, the Q006 outputs 1080p in the end.
3-Stick with your current DVD player and wait until spring for Blu-Ray or HD DVD.
The opinions stated above are mine only and not necessarily representative of AVS Forum or any of its members :D

Again, welcome!
1) I would be cautious about putting it too close to the wall, because the air coming out of the vent is directed backward, not out the side, and can get pretty hot. I'd be concerned about the long-term effect of the heat from the equivalent of pointing a blow-dryer at the wall point-blank for hours at a time.
2) I wish the HDTiVo gave us the option of same-as-input-signal, but it doesn't. But I've been hard-pressed to see a difference in 1080i vs. 720p on Fox and ABC shows. I use 1080i.
3) Add me to the "waiting for Blu-Ray" list. My current DVD player is a lowly XBox! (But there are others here with high-end DVD players who swear by them.)
Maybe I should have just responded, "what jb007 said." :)

Zechman 11-16-05, 12:11 AM Thanks, Zechman -- my, what a big brain you have! You are a great resource on this thread, and I want to hear more when you have the Mac thing nailed.
And my, what a swelled head you're giving me to store it in! :D
But seriously, the networking stuff is right up my alley, what I do for a living, and (if I do say so myself) I'm very good at it. If you want advice on something like SCUBA diving, talk to divedude--my advice there would surely get you drowned! It's all in what interests you.
Ultimately, what I want is very similar to what you want. My concern is with the user interface, which may be great or may be crappy. The site doesn't really give us any info there. If you do get one, I'm curious what you think of the interface. It has to be as easy to use as a TiVo in order to pass the wife test.
That's why I'm eagerly awaiting Blu-Ray recorders. I expect I'll be the first on this thread to get a BD-R drive for the computer. I think the "movie on a disk" concept will overall work better than a network server (and better than DVHS), even if the $$/GB ratio is higher than hard drives for a while. And I even have CAT5 running through most of the house!*

3. OK, OK, I'll add my 2 francs (errr euros, here) - "significant" - no way. Ask brt and I'll bet he will admit that he didn't see hardly any *change* when he hooked his Pio 59 avi up to the 006 over his old Sony. BUT - you MAY see some discernible difference when you plug that Pio 79 into an Algolith Dragonfly video processor and then that into the 006 ?
It all depends on your priorities..... **how much does several thousand dollars mean to you**...how large is your current DVD collection.....how many DVD's do you watch a month ?????????
Better yet, wait a few weeks and brt should give us all a comprehensive review on this subject.
*In terms of P/Q improvement......unless he was sober and completely concentrating on something like lettering on some character's clothing.

Back to the DVD player issue -- I'd bet the differences would be really tough to see on most displays, but they are noticeable on the Q006. In my case -- going from the Sony 975 to the Pioneer 59AVi -- I thought the improvement was significant -- not huge, but noticeable -- and I wanted a unit that was dead-reliable (which the Sony was not)...
But, some of us are more perverse than others -- just ask P-M [ ;) ]; he will tell you that I have been lurking around the DV-79AVi boards, still looking for the ultimate transport when the Algolith bugs arrive.

I agree with what has been said about the heat build up. Give the 006 plenty of air. I keep my HDTivo on 1080i and it looks great. I opted for the Sony 375 until the BlueRay comes out. I am happy with it.

thestewman 11-16-05, 09:12 PM Here is the best article I have found on the Blue-Ray/ HD-Dvd issue. It is to long to paste in entirety here, some important excerpts from the article and the link.
"We wanted the player to be capable of playing back a [9GB] high-definition red-laser disc, which we call BD-9," says Cardwell. "[The disc] would have a high enough capacity for our movies, and it would have a lower cost than the [25GB] BD-25. The advantage would be lower costs to manufacture the disc, because it could be manufactured on existing [DVD production] lines. Certainly, most of our movies will fit on a BD-9. The issue will be how much enhanced content will we put on there. For basic movies, most will fit on BD-9."
In October HP issued a statement requesting that the Blu-ray Disc Association make two changes in its draft spec. First, that Blu-ray back what's referred to as "mandatory managed copy": the guaranteed ability that people who buy Blu-ray Discs be able to make legal copies of content to other devices and media. (Competitor HD-DVD has already touted this consumer-friendly capability as one of its strengths.) The second change that HP asked for was that Blu-ray Disc adopt Microsoft's Interactive HD, or iHD, as the programming language that will govern the disc's menu creation and other interactive capabilities.
At the end of the day," he adds, "we're doing this for consumers. We want to allow consumers to move their HD content--including the interactive features--throughout the house, and iHD together with managed copy really enables that vision."

mburnstein,
The 006 uses the XL-5000 bulb and the smaller SXRD's use the XL-5100 bulb. Don't know the difference, except if a person has both the 006 and one of the other ones, they would need a spare bulb for each.

The SXRD panels are different in their sizes
Qualia 006 and 004 use three 0.78" SXRD panels
XBR 50" and 60" and Ruby Projector use three 0.61" SXRD panels
Both sets of panels have the same level of resolution and number of pixels
There are four different kinds of bulbs
004 Projector has a 700W Xenon bulb
Ruby Projector has a 400W Xenon bulb
006 TV has a 200W UHP bulb
XBR 50" and 60" TV's have a 120W UHP bulb
The Qualia 006 is NOT a Qualia 004 in a box.
Just to give you a sense of the difference in the builds of these SXRD devices:
004 Projector weighs 88lbs
Ruby Projector weighs 41lbs
006 TV weighs 273 lbs
XBR 60" weighs 112lbs
XBR 50" weighs 94lbs
JKUCSMA 11-18-05, 05:37 AM The Service Dept.,told me the Qualia uses glass panels, the sxrd has some plastic ones. This would also account for weight difference. The manager also said the 006 bulbs last for around 5000 hours, don't think that's true, also what's the deal on the getting a free bulb for the 006,and if not where's the cheapest place.Dealer wants 350.00.

Sony was offering the first bulb replacement free. Have they stop offering this to new Q006 owners? Unless they have lowered the price, I think they should still be offering the free bulb. Sony sells it for $300.00 :)
Since our thread has slowed down so much, (I mean how many times can one ask for directions :D), I actually had some time to check out the rest of the board and was reading the Official 2005 Sony KDSR-50/60 XBR1 SXRD Owner's Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6562217#post6562217) (what makes a thread "Official" anyway? Oh wait, I digress, that's another topic), and I was somewhat astonished reading only the last page. Every post dealt with owners of (baby) SXRD sets from Sony griping about green, purple or blue push, tint or overscan issues. Some had dark circles or spots on their display pictures. Some posted they were on their second replacement set already, while others were hoping for a new light engine. Yikes
Sony has been making news lately with the controversy regarding their release of DRM encrypted CD's, but now apparent problems with a new TV line???
I feel for these folks, I really do, but next time someone drops in to ask about the differences between the Q006 and the 50" and 60" SXRD's, refer them over to the *Offical* Sony SXRD Thread.
Happy Turkey Week everybody.
* For Dwayne, our Official Historian: Please allow me to add this personal note, this is post number 465 for me, which is the exact number of HR's hit by Hall of Famer Dave Winfield.
I'm sure this might have been asked before, but with the extra experience and more number of owners: what is the difference between the 006 and the 50/60 inch SXRD sony Grand Wega rear screen sets? Two of the main differences between the sets is the 50/60 SXRD panels have a contrast ratio of 5,000:1 and the Qualia panels have 3,000:1. The new SXRD sets also have a dynamic iris that helps improve CR ratio to around 13,000:1 that the Qualia does not have. The Qualia is built better and it seems like the new SXRD sets have some quality control issues. If you are lucky enough to a new SXRD set without any blue tint or other issues, it will produce a better picture than the Qualia.
ManWithAPlan 11-19-05, 12:34 PM Just thought I'd share my excitement here for a moment:
I just bought the Qualia 006 from a Tweeter in the Boston area (on sale for 10,999), and am awaiting delivery in the next week! I am absolutely in love with this set and can't wait to get my hands on it. I also have an XBox 360 coming on Tuesday, so it will be a great Thanksgiving! Yeeehaaaaaa!!!!
I am an old fashioned 2-channel guy at heart who's finally converting to 5 channel surround, high end video, home theater style setup. I am replacing an old Marantz 54 inch rear projection set that I've had since '98. It was good in its day, but all good things must come to an end.
I am awaiting the release of the Anthem Statement D2 to tie everything back together again. In the meantime, I just bought an HD Tivo HR10-250 and hacked it with the PTVNet upgrade to network it, and will be running a 1080i signal directly to the Qualia from the DirecTiVo via HDMI.
Any insights any of you Qualia veterans wants to share is appreciated. Thanks for this thread.

UMR who also has calibrated both sets also feels the XBR1 are the best RPTV he has ever worked on. Here is a quote from him.
"I am able to make the SXRD sets look very good, but they are not perfect and I cannot deliver perfection. I have not seen a "perfect" display yet. The XBR1 sets are the best RPTV for home theater use that I have seen including the Qualia which has even more hue problems than the XBR1 sets"

Gee, DD & PM; we're gonna have to manufacture some sorta controversy to up the page count around here...

On a programming note, looks like "Shark Tale" and "My Best Friend's Wedding" are both on tonight:
Shark Tale: 4PM PST/7PM EST CinemaxHD
Wedding: 6:05PM PST/9:05 PM EST ShowtimeHD
"Wedding" looks fantastic on the Qualia; have heard "Shark Tale" looks pretty good too...
If I understand UMR's comment correctly, he is saying that the Qualias are no better than the SXRDs in the hue area. SXRD owners are freaking out about the blue hue or non-unformity issues. Is it a problem on the Qualias?
Actually, the XBR1's appear to be a little better at color in general than the Qualia 006. I prefer the Qualia optical/projection system and styling. The size of the Qualia can also be a big plus. It looks like the next generation panels are performing better. I just finished a XBR1 set today and the CR measured a wopping 3800:1 without the dynamic iris. It probably was even higher because my light meter limited out at 0.02 fL on the bottom end. I have not seen any Qualia 006 do that.

divedude 11-19-05, 07:32 PM I went to the Dallas HD Expo today and saw the BlueRay again. This is the third time I have had the opportunity to see one, but this time it was on a table, so I was able to take a good look at the back. I didn't see either HDMI or iLink connections on the back. This was a demo unit from Japan. I asked the Sony Rep and all he had to say was they are still working out the details. Unfortunately, that was all he had to say about anything I asked him about the BlueRay. It was hooked up to the Sony Qualia 005 $15,000 46" LCD and the picture was outstanding.
umr, actually what I was wondering about was your previous comment as follows: "The XBR1 sets are the best RPTV for home theater use that I have seen including the Qualia which has even more hue problems than the XBR1 sets". I was surprised to hear that the Qulaia might have the same kinds of hue problems that are currently being reported in the SXRD threads and causing a lot of concern. Are you referring to the same "blue hue" (at corners) and color uniformity (green blotches) problems? Can you clarify?
All LCoS sets have color uniformity imperfections. It does not matter which model you are talking about. The problem is in combining three colors the transmission of each color is not completely uniform laterally or in intensity at low light levels. This is caused by polarizer alignment and panel imperfections. The severity is manufacturer and model dependent. Every LCoS/SXRD set has this to some extent. Some like the new Canon LCoS FP have it very bad and the new SXRD XBR1 has it to a much lesser extent. Proper calibration can reduce the problem, but it is probably impossible to eliminate it.
The "blue hue" is poorly defined from the posts I have seen. The problems being reported are probably a mixture of both of these.
Some of the colors people may be seeing on the edges can be caused by chromatic abberation. The Qualia has much less of this than the XBR1. Without seeing a set in person it is difficult for me to judge what someone is seeing.
Just thought I'd share my excitement here for a moment:
I just bought the Qualia 006 from a Tweeter in the Boston area (on sale for 10,999), and am awaiting delivery in the next week! I am absolutely in love with this set and can't wait to get my hands on it. I also have an XBox 360 coming on Tuesday, so it will be a great Thanksgiving! Yeeehaaaaaa!!!!
WOW! A Qualia 006 and Xbox 360 at almost the same time, you are a man with a plan! :D
"Shark Tale" is one of my favorites ;)Man, I've never seen that on the Q006 before; the clarity and depth were pretty amazing...

brt3,
Friday we got the new speakers for the 7.1 system hooked up. You should have seen Mini Dive hopping from rafter to rafter and diving into the insulation as he ran the wires :D
Last night, I watched both Black Hawk Down and Independence Day. Both looked excellent on the 006 and the total sound experience was fantastic. I set the speakers up per THX specs.
Has anyone found a way to turn off the illuminated Sony logo on the Qualia? It's the only thing that I didn't like when I finally got the chance to view the set yesterday at Tweeter. It wasn't enough of an issue to stop me from purchasing one though.
ManWithAPlan 11-20-05, 09:54 AM RAJH,
There is indeed. It's a Menu option. I turned the logo off actually on the 006 at the Framingham, Mass Tweeter (not sure which one you went to). The sales guy said it couldn't be done, I found the setting in about 6 seconds. Sony being Sony, the logo actually fades to black very slowly, for a little more drama. When you turn it back on, it fades up slowly as well.
Cute huh?
pawrampe 11-20-05, 09:58 AM It's easy to turn on/off from the menu.
ManWithAPlan 11-20-05, 10:02 AM So, I spoke to a Sony engineer recently by calling the Qualia support line and being persistent.
I asked him about the potential for Sony to offer an upgrade that would allow the 006 to accept a 1080p signal from an external source. He indicated that Sony has just started offering that exact thing to owners of the Qualia projector, the 004. He said they are charging owners $3000, and the owner must send the projector to Sony, and they will make the upgrade, and send it back. The engineer indicated it is entirely "possible" that they would move to the 006 next, though the upgrade would have to be coordinated with their Authorized Dealers, so home visits could be arranged. He said it has been discussed, but that no decision has been made yet as to whether to offer this on the 006.
I of course pleaded my case, citing the excitement for this set, and the capability of others at half the price to offer 1080p, blah blah blah. Understanding that this would come at a cost, I told him they'd have 1 sold in about 13 nanoseconds!
What do others think?

I went to the North Attleboro store.
The only other question I have now is how PC friendly this set is. I asked the question earlier and never got a definitive reply. Guess I will have to figure that out myself when I get the set this week. My guess is that over scan will be an issue.

Sony is not targeting this display for PC usage. It only supports 4:2:2 color and has some overscan. The XBR1 does have a VGA input and is more computer friendly in its design. I have not tested the VGA port on the XBR1 to see if it supports 4:4:4 color.
Any you Qualia Dudes watch this TV with picture on the screen, or all just stare at POS TV with blanks screen in pitch black room? No eat. No sleep. Just stare at blank screen like SXRD Owner? Maybe smoke sum dope

I think I found the answer but don't really understand the implications.
The term "4:4:4" refers to the fact that the color information can be input at full horizontal resolution, and 10-bit data paths provide 1024 steps of brightness and color.
I don't plan on using a HTPC for movie watching but how does this impact games?

It depends on how they are encoded. Computers can use the full 4:4:4 color mode and typically do. Video basically throws away 1/2 of the color resolution when it is encoded YPbPr or YCbCr to save bandwidth. The Sony televisions on component and HDMI inputs cannot represent 4:4:4 color and will instead convert it to 4:2:2 if you input 4:4:4 loosing 1/2 of the color resolution. However, the B&W part of the signal retains full resolution.
Sets like the Brillian are setup to display 4:4:4 resolution on its component, DVI and VGA inputs and can also be configured to PC levels which is very PC friendly.

There would get a lot of folks buying this upgrade. I'd agree in 11 nanoseconds.

In real world terms, does the added chroma resolution result in a visably better picture??
In real world terms, does the added chroma resolution result in a visably better picture??
Sure if the source is 4:4:4, but no consumer broadcast or prerecorded HD or SD source is 4:4:4. It would need to be something that is computer generated to exist in 4:4:4 or a professional video source that has not undergone the compression.
For example, a customer with an XBR1 yesterday noticed immediately that it was missing 4:4:4 resolution on the multiburst pattern. This required me to explain why it looked funny on the one pixel color burst while the luma looked excellent. He was even sitting about 14 feet back from a 60" screen.
Off topic but here goes...
I'm getting FIOS internet from Verizon in a week or so since it's twice as fast (15 mb/sec download, and 2 mb/sec upload) as Comcast's cable modem service (6 mb/sec download and 0.6 mb/sec upload) and they are offering it in my area for only $30 per month (Comcast costs $45/ month) and am wondering if CAT-5 cable can be run outdoors along the side of my house - I've heard this is NOT a good idea cause the CAT-5 can attract lightning - does anyone know or does anyone have any experience running CAT-5 outdoors? (my run would be about 150 feet to the back of the house and into the room where my main computer resides). I'd rather do this and not use a wireless router if possible to ensure I get the full bandwidth.
Penton-Man 11-20-05, 05:48 PM Gee, DD & PM; we're gonna have to manufacture some sorta controversy to up the page count around here...
:D
Despite what some politicians have stated, then retracted under pressure, then insinuated, then……after time…..stated again……THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION BETWEEN 9/11 AND IRAQ……..NEVER WAS …….LETS NOT REWRITE HISTORY !
Sorry, but I just returned from Arlington laying to rest (for the SECOND time in less than a year) a good friend’s son !
Afterwards, I paid my respects to the grave of my Mom (an Army nurse wounded in WWII).
So far, this weekend has completely sucked so I’m looking forward to some direction giving and MEANINGFUL combat and pillaging on ROME this evening to get back to a kinder, gentler world.
Penton-Man 11-20-05, 05:52 PM P.S. I'm not trying to stir up trouble here with the Qualians about the "blue hue" corners and uniformity issues but I think I and maybe other SXRD owners would rest easier if we knew it was inherent in both the Qualias and the SXRDs. I was just curious to know if the Qualia was also afflicted with this problem.
Honestly, the biggest HUE problem I have is watching some shows that differ in color between indoor and outdoor scenes.
Example, NUMBERS, outdoors too greenish-yellow, indoors perfect color.
That bugs me more than anything else and it aint the 006's fault.
Penton-Man 11-20-05, 05:54 PM I prefer the Qualia optical/projection system and styling. The size of the Qualia can also be a big plus.
THAT in no way can be understated.

I told THEM that they could probably sell the upgrade to 90% of 006 owners with little or no marketing needed.

I know they plan on releasing a 65" 1080p version soon. I hope to see one when it is available. They are the most PC friendly display I have seen. They even won an award for this. http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=99152&tsource=3 I also heard that the new 1080p set beat all comers in the Widescreen Review Shootout to be published soon. Knowing Brillian they probably used very high quality components. Not sure they can beat the SXRD panel and iris system though.
THAT in no way can be understated.
Even my non-videophilic neighbors can appreciate the advantage of 70"!
No disagreement here. I would still choose the Qualia for my house over all comers in the RPTV category even with its short comings.

I can't help, but express a profound sadness for the personal loss to those who were closest to these brave young men. However, we have both a duty and honor to continue doing "good" and the "right thing" in the world no matter our own personal hazard. Their example of giving the ultimate sacrifice I am sure has not only inspired others to raise the standard, but to love others as we should not only in word, but in deed.

Here is the perfect accessory to network in to your Qualia / Mac setup. Now you can fix a burger while downloading a movie :D
http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/looflirpa/igrill.shtml
Just in case no one noticed, the George Foreman iGrill was just a joke that Mini Dive thought Zechman would enjoy. On further searching, I have found several sites where people have built an emulation, although none of them work from USB power. And here is an even funnier critique of the iGrill.
http://www.heferito.com/igrill.asp
And this is my contribution for my official 200th post. By the way, I love my 006 :D
Zechman 11-20-05, 09:24 PM Since a bunch of people seem to be waiting breathlessly for me to give the last word in hooking up a PC to the Qualia 006, I figure it's long past time I burst everyone's bubble. I have never hooked up a PC to the Qualia, and probably never will.
Yes, I'm a PC gamer as well as an XBox gamer. Only the XBox is in the living room. (Well, I guess the Mac is, too, but it has it's own monitor--which is temporary--and is running a VNC server.) My PC's (6, in all) are in my computer room, connected to a KVM switch and a good 21" monitor. I play my PC games at my desk and would not endear myself to Mrs. Zechman very much if I started hogging the TV even more with them.
I appreciate your faith in me, but it's just not gonna happen. At least, not unless Media Center Edition starts supporting direct-to-1394 output.

Thanks anyway.
I may be able to give it a shot sometime this week, assuming my set arrives as scheduled on Wednesday.

Don't know if anyone has already mentioned this, but the new issue of Perfect Vision mag has an article by Gary Merson. He tested a bunch of sets to see if they properly weave 1080i.
He says our 006 DOES properly weave (no bobbing here).
I'm sure Penton - who has been asking this question since Day 1 - will be happy to hear this.
That is actually very good news about the weave -- I've been wondering about that and there's been a dearth of information (unless UMR posted something that I missed) on that point. Thanks!
Cheers
Did Gary Merson say anything about the weave processing also applying to the SXRD sets??

Component cables only carry video, plus from your description, you're currently only inputting to the Q006, not the Denon. Hook up an optical (or digital coaxial) to the Denon and you should be good to go. Have fun!

MotorMouth777 11-22-05, 11:32 PM nhey,
You asked about running a bunch of cable on the outside of your house. I would not recommend you doing this if at all possible.
The cable in question will not specifically attract lightning but what is a risk is that lightning will strike near enough the cable to create an induced charge within the cable. Lightning does not even have to strike to build up an induced charge. The longer the receptor (your cable) the greater potential for charge differentials to be built up across both ends. This is why you should never lay flat on the ground if caught out in the open with lightning. The charge differential between your feet and your head is enough to kill you even if not directly struck by lightning. You should squat on the balls of your feet close together, cover your nutsack with foil and promise all that is holy that you will never again be a dumbass and get caught out in the open like that again.
Think of it like a big antenna wrapped around your house. If the strike is close enough you can get a powerful enough surge in the cable to cause damage. If lightning actually strikes the cable then you are definitely hosed. Would be a bummer to fry your wonderful electronics that way.
Try and limit exposed unshielded cable on the outside if at all possible unless your house is inside a large faraday cage.
http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci942282,00.html
Motormouth,
I currently have Comcast cable running from the side of my house to the back - exactly the same path that I'd like to have Verizon run the Cat-5 cable. Is there any difference between the Comcast cable and the proposed cat-5 cable in terms of this risk??? In that regard, what about all the cable running above ground everywhere? Doesn't that pose the same risk you describe?
Never had any lightning strikes in my area.
XBOX 360 and the Q006 ROCKS!!!
The Qualia never stops to amaze me!!!! :D
Kaduku - which XBOX 360 game/games have you purchased? Is the XBOX 360 quiet? Any fan noise? What do you particularly like about the 360 as compared to previous game consoles you have?
Did Gary Merson say anything about the weave processing also applying to the SXRD sets??
He said that the 006 properly weaves a 1080i broadcast's two 540-line fields into a single full resolution 1080-line for processing. It does not display the 540-line half resolution fields sequentially, multiplying or upconverting each of them to 1080 lines - a process called bobbing.
This is from his article:
He used SMPTE 133 test pattern at 1080i with and without a motion component. He says a properly deinterlaced image is stable, reproducing every line in the frame, while a non-deinterlaced half resolution bobbed image would flicker black then white, as the processor would be handling only one set of lines every 1/60th of a second, and putting them on screen as black, then white images, strobing 60 times a second. He validated his test procedures and conclusions by consulting with engineers from several processor-chip manufactures and set makers as well as the president of Key Digital.
He tested 12 Sony sets and the 006 and one current LCD passed but 10 other sets DID NOT PASS. He apparently has not tested the new XBR SXRD sets, but is planning on doing the 1080p DLPs and other 1080ps, and will report on them in upcoming issues.
Kaduku - which XBOX 360 game/games have you purchased? Is the XBOX 360 quiet? Any fan noise? What do you particularly like about the 360 as compared to previous game consoles you have?
I have the premium system with Call of Duty 2, Madden 06, and PGR. I am currently trying to get the wireless network adapter. I placed the game console inside my Salamander cabinet and when I do reach in to place a disc, I do hear the fan and it is somewhat loud. Maybe it's due to it's enclosed environment. I don't hear it though once I step back. Just a note, the ac power adapter is huge, almost the size of two bricks. What I like about this console, size is smaller, graphics is freakin awesome, network feature. Another note, when you get one, don't forget to switch to HDTV on the HD component cables. I didn't do this at first and noticed that something was wrong, the picture just didn't look any better than the last console. :)
Penton-Man 11-23-05, 04:20 PM To fellow Qualians and followers of this Qualian thread…..
I wish you folks a Happy, Happy Thanksgiving…….as I believe we all have something to be thankful for every year!
In regards to the 006, other than absolutely trouble-free service of this display for almost a year now…..
the one add-on, accessory, etc. that I am MOST thankful for is a relatively inexpensive gem that has relieved me of untold aggravation and worry from over-exuberant maids that dust/clean things with ANY cloth or solution that they seem to have available at the time  (Geez, and I really only pay them for walking around topless* :D ), a barrier from the wet noses of visiting canines and WHATEVER is on the hands of visiting rug-rats that are just learning how to walk near the 006 .....
I’m referring of course to Kaduku’s micro-fiber cover!

MRJAZZZ 11-23-05, 04:23 PM POSSIBLE DAMAGED NEW 006
Just had delivered QUALIA, 006, and i can notice from about 1.5 screen width, some color fringing, of about 1 to 1.5 pixels, of red , and green, around any white lettering. You can see it when you bring up the on screen menu. The over all pictures sharpness, still looks very clear, and sharp, though. I also may have another issue, with some strange banding. Maybe just an issue with a broadcast I was watching, and have not had a chance to test further, however, I saw when watching a hockey play back, some very faint, red vertical bars, when the camer panned across the screen. Any thoughts on on of this would be appeciated.

We all have some chromatic aberration which may be what you are seeing. Can you take a digital photo and post it? I did that a couple months ago (search on my posts and look for more recent ones) and UMR, our resident calibrationist thinks it's chromatic aberration not a convergence issue. I can see it on white test patterns up close, but don't see it from 12 feet away on white lettering. The banding (faint red vertical bars) you describe has not been mentioned (IIRC) in this thread as an 006 issue.
To fellow Qualians and followers of this Qualian thread…..
So a special thanks to Kaduku for the referral. :)

I am also enjoying my cover and so glad that I thought of it. I have dusted my screen very minimally because of this cover. I'm just happy that I've somehow contributed to this great thread. Happy Thanksgiving to you and the rest of Qualians! :D

Thanks for the feed back. I made a quick stop to the dealer, and checked out their 006, and a 60" SXRD, and they two exhibited a similar level of color fringing. SO this indeed may not be a defect. In truth, one can see this on almost any digital display if you put your nose right to the screen. Have not yet determined if the red banding problem, is in fact a problem. Does any one know how I can get into the following menu options:
CLEAR WHITE, DETAIL ENHANCER, BLACK ENHANCER,GAMMA, WHITE LEVEL. All of these don't appear to be in my ADVANCED VIDEO options.

MRJAZZZ, you have to be set to the PRO mode first.
I believe that they do make some shielded Cat5 cable for outside use.
nhey,
You asked about running a bunch of cable on the outside of your house.

JKUCSMA 11-25-05, 03:44 AM We came home after going out for Thanksgiving dinner and behold a picture so dim you could barely see it,only 1000 hrs. on bulb.We will see how good Qualia service is.I tried every adjustment, everything was good color etc..,the picture though was dim, with only white or bright things visable.
Finally got a chance to watch a movie on my new Qualia 006 yesterday. "The Transporter" via HD, D-VHS tape. I was blown away by the picture! I've watched allot of HD material on my other sets (70" Sony XBR 950 and 64" Pioneer Pro Elite 710HD) but have never seen a picture this good. I haven't even tweaked the set yet. As with my XBR 950 I prefer the Vivid (torch) mode. I was also surprised how good non-HD material looks on the set.
Tweeter has a 60-day return policy, but the only reason I would even consider returning it is to get the new Sony Ruby projector.

I had a similar experience -- not sure how many hours, but just a few months of ownership. Sony got a replacement bulb to me within two days. I called my concierge. Although it's a $300 item, I now have a spare buld on standby.
Component cables only carry video, plus from your description, you're currently only inputting to the Q006, not the Denon. Hook up an optical (or digital coaxial) to the Denon and you should be good to go. Have fun!
Thanks, your suggestion worked perfectly.
And, by the way, the 006 and 360 is an awesome combination!
PC Connection Results:
My preliminary results with connecting to a PC are very good. Not perfect but very good. I connected the Geforce 6800 to the Qualia Input 7, HDMI connector. The Geforce 6800 automatically detected the device as a Sony HDTV and configured it for a resolution of 1280x720P. Note that I am using the latest NVidia drivers.
There is a small, approximately 2%, amount of overscan around all edges. Only half of the desktop tool bar is visible. For most games and applications this should not be much of an issue. The other resolution I tried was 1920x1080i. Most of the tool bar was not visible at this resolution. I had the Qualia user menu over scan set to minimum.
Picture quality at both 720P and 1080i was excellent. Screen text is sharp and HalfLife2 never looked so good!
ManWithAPlan 11-25-05, 04:51 PM RAJH,
I'm curious how many guys Tweeter sent for delivery of the set. I have heard it said, and the manual actually states, to always have 4 people move the 006. I am awaiting delivery of my 006 from Tweeter as well (there is a delay on the Salamander order that I placed with it), so I am curious if they only sent 2 guys or 4. In the end, Tweeter is responsible, if some guy drops this thing on the way up my stairs, but it would suck regardless.
I got my Xbox 360 yesterday, and waiting for my Qualia is painful right now. Perfect Dark Zero and Call of Duty 2 demand a better set than my old 4:3 Marantz rear projection from '97!!!
Signed,
Waiting (not so) patiently :-)
ManWithAPlan 11-25-05, 04:56 PM Rajh,
Also curious on your D-VHS connection to the Qualia. Exactly which D-VHS player are you using, and what kind of connection (HDMI, Component?). I've never ventured into the D-VHS side of things, still have S-VHS. Would you recommend D-VHS at this point, or is my HD Tivo plenty, along with maybe a DVD recorder?
I'm so jealous on the Transporter viewing, I bet it was amazing!

Two men. I've never had more than two for any of my sets. My wife and I get very nervous watching them especially on the stairs. They were very careful with my set but they were struggling with it up the stairs.

I actually have two D-VHS decks. I use one with my XBR 950 and another with the Qualia. They are both connected via component. One is a JVC HM-DH30000U
and the other a newer JVC HM-DH40000U. D-VHS is the only available HD source for movies until HD DVD's arrive. The available D-VHS library is small but it's better than nothing. You can also use the tape deck to record HD or SD movies. The picture quality of a HD, D-VHS movie is awesome.
I highly recommend D-VHS!
I highly recommend D-VHS! Baz Luhrmann is not everyone's cup o' tea, but I highly recommend "Moulin Rouge" on DVHS. Mindblowing colors; chek out the scene where Nicole Kidman first appears...
Zechman 11-25-05, 10:21 PM I highly recommend D-VHS!

This is probably old news for most of you.
From the CNET web site.
"The 70-inch 006 is part of Sony's high-end Qualia brand. Sony discontinued development on the entire brand in late September, but the remaining stock of 006 models is still available for sale."
Get them while they last.
johnnylobster 11-27-05, 10:58 AM Question buy an 006 now or wait to see what Sony does with it's 70" line up.
I do love this display but don't want to drop retail dollars if something new is right around the corner.
I've been a long time reader / recent member of this great forum and thanks to all that post.
Just got the 006 delivered this morning and wife thinks it is awesome but lots of reflection in that big screen. It is going be an adjustment since our former Mits CRT RP did not. (I took the glass off).
Delivery guys (only 2) asked if they were good to go when I glanced at the screen and noticed a 3/4 inch line/smudge crossing multiple pixels. I can see it from 10 feet back on a light background :( Looking at the glare screen from the side, I also noticed a vertical deformation in the plastic that goes ~70% doen the front of the screen. When viewing straight on, I can't see it.
I'm failry picky about things and try not to look to close cause nothing is perfect.
I did not see these on the set in the showroom and I looked pretty close at that one.
Are these common attributes or am I too picky?
Thanks, Seth

A common question on all of these boards, buy now or wait for something new and (hopefully) better. Besides giving you the "I don't have a crystal ball" response, a reading of the 50"/60" SXRD thread and this Q006 thread, basically distills it down to the following: The new Sony SXRD's are significantly cheaper (a 70" could conceivably sell for just a bit more than half the price of the Q006), and supposedly have a better contrast ratio and better blacks. There is also an auto iris. However, folks on that thread are complaining loudly about convergence and chromatic aberration issues.
Here, everyone by and large absolutely LOVES their Q006 and we have heard of very few issues (bulb replacement issues typically).
So, what it may come down to is $$$. In this case, based on what we know it doesn't appear a new 70" SXRD from Sony (which has not yet been officially announced as far as I know, so it may be awhile), will be better than a Q006 picture wise/styling wise, just because it is a newer model.
Good luck in your decision making process.

Seth, welcome aboard. Sounds to me, you are (going to remain) a Q006 owner. I don't think you're being too picky at all. This is one expensive piece of equipment and you are entitled to something as close to perfect as possible. I have not heard of anyone having your same issues. Can you post pictures?
Qualia has been pretty good about responding to customer's issues, so depending on whom you purchased the set from, maybe you can get it swapped out fairly quickly. Good luck and let us know what happens.
I asked myself the same question before purchasing a Qualia 006. A 70" SXRD, assuming they ever make one, will most likely cost quite a bit less than a Qualia 006.
I recommend spending some time with both a 60" SXRD and a 70" Qualia 006. My guess is that the picture on a 70" SXRD would look similar to the 60" SXRD. If you would be happy with the picture of the SXRD and don't mind waiting until one is available, assuming they ever are, then save your money and go with the SXRD. If on the other hand you prefer the picture of a Qualia to the SXRD and/or don't want to wait for Sony to offer a 70" SXRD then go for the Qualia.
You also have to consider how much longer existing Qualia 006 stock will last.

Seth,
I am also very picky and have not noticed any issues with my new Qualia. My set is in a light controlled room so glare would not be an issue for me.
Here is a pic of the screen defect. I'm trying to capture the glare screen. Thoughts?

I looks like some contaminant in the light path and probably on the screen itself. You can check this better by looking at each primary color and see if it is only visible on one. If it is it is on the panel it will appear with only one color. It appears to be in focus which means it would either be on a panel or on the screen.
Just got the 006 delivered this morning and wife thinks it is awesome but lots of reflection in that big screen. It is going be an adjustment since our former Mits CRT RP did not. (I took the glass off).
I think you got spoiled not having a glass on your TV. I wouldn't recommend removing the glass off the Qualia, because I think it actually adds to the picture quality besides protecting the screen. Just control the lighting and congrats! :D
umr,
I agree that it is likely some debris on the screen as it is there regardless of RGB. My belief is the TV should be replaced not repaired given it came out of the box this way. I bought it locally and don't expect an issue.
Thanks, Seth
Is the "glass" on the front of the Qualia really glass or is it perspex or plexiglass? I would think real glass would be too heavy and too fragile. Is it treated in any way with anti-glare coating or anything?
You are correct, it is not glass. Yes, it has been treated with anti-glare coating.
As an SXRD owner (7 weeks) and active participant in the SXRD Owners thread I've not seen too many complaints about convergence and chromatic aberration issues but there are a LOT of complaints about color non-uniformity: bluish areas in the corners and green blotches on the screen. These complaints are drowning out everything else.
Thanks for the clarification. The bottom line is, Q006 owners have not complained about any issues with color non-uniformity, bluish areas in the corners or green blotches on the screen.

That is not true. I know of one owner who complained about color non-uniformity.

I just called my cierge and told him I wanted to be sure I received my free replacement bulb and was concerned because of the rumors swirling around the Qualia brand. He took care of everything from there and the new bulb arrived a few days later. However, I did receive an email from someone at Sony -- after the order had been placed for the new bulb, but before receipt -- requesting that I contact them with the hours on my bulb to help them chart how long bulbs are lasting. I never contacted them and haven't heard from them again. This was about three months ago.

Eileen's fine ;)
I've been really busy and just came up for air. Saw I had a lot of catching up to do on the thread so spent my commute home seeing what you boys/girls were up to.
I too have been reading the baby SXRD threads and noticed all the issues swirling around and was quite surprised/dismayed. I rechecked my Q since some reports over there indicated that the issue was time related...i.e., appeared or got worse with time. I don't see any of the issues they are reporting. Chromatic aberration is extremely minimal if not non-existent on my Q...I've only ever noticed the slightest amount when putting up test patterns or looking at PC output and then it was limited to the far corners. It's all in the optics and I'm not sure what they are using to eliminate/reduce CA, but they did it well.
Not that I ever cared about the purchase price of the Q, but these issues sure do highlight what Sony was trying to do with their whole Q line, cut no corners and produce the best possible product, without concern as to production rates/costs.
I hope that by the time I am ready to pick another set up, Sony will have worked out the kinks in the baby SXRDs.
Neo2005 11-29-05, 08:59 AM Hey ..... notfernutt'n but has anybody heard anything about the Mosquito? My $$$$ has been out there a very long time, and all I'm getting is silence from Jason and the crew. They must be taking lessons from the White House concerning our borders.

JKUCSMA 11-30-05, 05:45 AM I received my replacement bulb yesterday, and while talking to Qualia rep,she replied that their is no truth to the demise of Qualia, and their will be no 70"Sony Sxrd.Sony stopped research on other technologies, but will focus on Sxrd.Qualia is here to stay.believe what you want.I would say to keep an eye on your fan,for dust, the bulb has two screens for airflow, the bottom one on my bulb had alot of dust in it.The new bulb is so bright,I'am using it on reduced power, and still looks great.
JKUGSMA
What is it about Sony reps that give out all kinds of off the wall information?
Recently at a Sony demo, the parot said that bulbs on these sets last, now get this, 5 years on the 006 and 10 years on the 3 LCD. (maybe if you only watch it 3 hrs a day) He also said that Blue Ray is due out in 20 months. The demo was last month so this is fresh misinformation. Guess the HD-DVD camp is excited. :)
But one thing that was said was that Sony has already stopped manufacturing the 006 and would have an 70" SXRD due out by August 2006. So do you believe the same source that also give out misinformation?? I sure don't know. At least this second part was confirmed by others who have "contacts" with Sony.
JKUCSMA 11-30-05, 09:32 AM I didn't say I believe it,just a messenger, although she did say some people believe what they want to.My service shap said 5000 hrs. for the bulb, she said 1800 to 2000hrs.
BenDover 11-30-05, 09:42 AM I certainly have read many posts by people apparently in the know that a 70 GW SXRD is due out by year end next year. That being said, I have my doubts about the release time given the problems they are having with the 50 and 60 models. It is a big deal jumping from 60 to 70 in a rear projection set, the optics/screen design become very challenging when trying to put out a product with good performance at a low price point.
JKUCSMA 11-30-05, 09:55 AM I just got a call from the Qualia rep.,they said since the bulb died at only 1047hrs.,they will give me a three year warranty on the bulb they sent me,if it goes another free one.
JKUCSMA
So the warranty on the bulb is 3 years and not "X" number of hours. I can see the smile on your face. lol

Penton-Man 11-30-05, 05:23 PM Recently at a Sony demo, the parot said that bulbs on these sets last, now get this, 5 years on the 006 and 10 years on the 3 LCD. (maybe if you only watch it 3 hrs a day) He also said that Blue Ray is due out in 20 months. The demo was last month so this is fresh misinformation. Guess the HD-DVD camp is excited. :)
.
Well I would like to know the name of this Sony rep…… feel free to P.M. me.
The Blu-ray is STILL set to debut this spring…"Aprilish".
In fact, if I can fit it into my schedule, I may be attending a seminar on the sucker this Friday.
As an aside, it appears that umr's associates stole "the trophy" from the Naval Academy. Well, enjoy it for the time being, because...... come this weekend, you won't see it again for a few years. :D
Penton-Man 11-30-05, 05:30 PM brt,
Can you PULL-ease post another pic of Elmo ?
If we can't get a pic of a Mosquito, a canine is better than nuthin.
Penton-Man 11-30-05, 08:08 PM But one thing that was said was that Sony has already stopped manufacturing the 006.
This also is untrue!
And they are continuing to sell well for that matter. :)
brt -- Can you PULL-ease post another pic of Elmo? If we can't get a pic of a Mosquito, a canine is better than nuthin.Done. And, BTW, I've not heard hide nor hair of anything Algolith. Major bummer, as Elmo is sick and tired of all those Comcast artifacts...
This also is untrue! And they are continuing to sell well for that matter. :) Am I the only one here perverse enough to consider getting a second Q006? I know they'll improve on this set, but it does so many things so very well...
P-M, maybe you could organize a Qualia 006 Group Buy...
divedude 11-30-05, 08:28 PM Still no avatars -- it's tough looking at DiveDude without his bubbles...
:D
Any of you dive buddies want to share air, I guess I ran out
Attached is the full blown picture of me blowing bubbles with some of my underwater buddies :D
Mr & Mrs Smith DVD looked pretty good on the Q006.

Mrs Smith looks good, period!!! :D
Mr & Mrs Smith DVD looked pretty good on the Q006.That Mr. Smith is one lucky guy!
BTW -- the award for most eggregious waste of bandwidth in 2005 goes to CBS, who broadcast the 1964 classic "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" (http://www.cbs.com/specials/rudolph/) in High Def, despite the fact that it's 4:3 material with animation that makes "Gumby" look state-of-the-art by comparison. Unbelievable!
Here's a photo of my initial reaction when I first tuned in: see if you can guess whether I'm feeling anger, puzzlement, or simply befuddlement...

Angelina did look pretty hot, especially in that leather outfit. It was weird seeing Vince Vaughn with Brad, knowing that Jen will eventually be with Vince.
divedude 12-01-05, 08:12 PM dd, there is a post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/announcement.php?f=63&announcementid=83) that says the Avatars are currently off
in order to save server processes.
jb007,
Looks like we are back in business with the picts and I'm blowing bubbles again. Thanks for the heads up about the Avatars :)

brt3,
I am going with befuddlement... Now lets all sing :D
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
play in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"
Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history!
MotorMouth777 12-01-05, 11:18 PM I thought that Rudolph was looking pretty damn good. Thought it was just the Q doing its normal thing with SD.
8 months with the Q, one replaced bulb but picture is still jaw dropping perfect. I had been hoping they would come out with a 60 inch Q. I'm with BRT thinking a second Q for the bedroom might be the schnizzle. Would rather hold out for a 80 incher Q for main room and move the "baby" 70 upstairs.
Now that would be sweet.

Wonder if anyone out there knows of a source for B-stock Qualias...
:D
Very nice pic DD!

Listen Up! First year anniversary of the first confirmed Q sold in the US, possibly the world (beside Japan), which went to JB007 is coming up. I feel this is really a special occasion, because even almost after a year, this TV still is one the best and still amazes it's owners.
JB placed his order on December 30, 2004 and received his Q on January 7, 2005. Lets all remember and celebrate this special day! :)
MotorMouth777 12-02-05, 01:51 AM I salute and thank all you first wavers. It was because of all of you buying the Qualia and taking the time to post your experiences, thoughts etc that allowed me also to make the decision to buy the Q. Without all of your support I may have spent less but gotten so much less........gasp.......maybe even a DLP.
However since I actually lifted up my skirt, grabbed my snarglies and just bought the 006 I have had so much amazing enjoyment from this TV that I owe you all big time.
JB was first but you everyone of you first wavers will always have a special place next to my newfound snarglies.
:)

Ditto! It took guts to develop a TV like this and at the price to build them!
BTW Ray, I just pre-ordered a Nikon 18-200mm AF-S DX VR II lens. Yes, I am truly an early adopter, sight un-seen type of guy. Besides I can always return for a full refund! :D

Just don't try to use the anti vibration (image stabilizer) while on a tripod.
On other still cameras, image stabilizers tend to worsten image quality when tripod mounting. Just turn the feature off in those cases.
Wish Canon had something like that for a 20D, that's 2.8 and the same size. In my dreams. lol
