Ditto! It took guts to develop a TV like this and at the price to build them! BTW Ray, I just pre-ordered a Nikon 18-200mm AF-S DX VR II lens. Yes, I am truly an early adopter, sight un-seen type of guy. Besides I can always return for a full refund! :DThat's great! Who did you order your lens from; I've got an incoming Nikon D200 (from Adorama) headed my way. Would love to add the 18-200 and improve my Qualia website photography. Justify, justify, justify...

I pre-ordered from ritzcamera.com for $749, not bad compared to the price on the 17-55. J&R has it for $799. Not much reviews on it yet, but pics on the site below look promising. The D200 will have to wait.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Qualia :D
Penton-Man 12-03-05, 12:11 AM Done. And, BTW, I've not heard hide nor hair of anything Algolith. Major bummer, as Elmo is sick and tired of all those Comcast artifacts...
Well ditto that with Adelphia in SoCal..... soon to become Comcast errrr Time Warner -doesn't matter as they're in bed together anyway.
I'm just wondering if it's going to get mucho worse come Olympics in Turin with all the fast motion stuff.
I had really hoped by now you would have received your Mosquito and let us all know if it was indeed as good as advertised.
I guess we need that frontal view pic of Elmo as "The Thinker" which is really my fav. :)

brt, it is NOW time for you and Elmo to take off that Thinker's Cap and put on that Experimenter’s Cap as I would like a thorough evaluation of the Squeeter bug
ESPECIALLY,
if it cures the Pie In the Face Pixelation with fast pans or fast action stuff in HD, as I would like to know once and for all if this is a compression problem with cable or a motion adaptive 1080i deinterlacing problem with every freakin display there is on the market!

Penton-Man 12-04-05, 04:49 PM FYI-
I haven't really planned on BUYING a DVD with Blu-ray on the horizon but, I'm tempted to get that fight movie starring that real life Australian fight guy that's due out next week.
Anyone seen that movie in thee THE-A-Turs and is it a keeper?

PM,
Haven't seen the Cinderella Man, but have it in my Netflix queue. The reviews say it should have a lot of Oscar nominations for great acting.
If you haven't seen March of the Penguins, it is a real winner - just amazing what they endure.

Didn't get my bugs for my b'day (12/5), but hoping they make it for Xmas! Therapist says I may be walking w/out crutches in 2-4 weeks, which will be essential to getting all this set up. Elmo is quite hard on cables when he unplugs them with his teeth, and his drool is hell on connectors...

Have Dragon do 480i > 720p

You are right. Animals are great and they all have their special roles to play in nature. If we humans had to endure what the Emperor Penguins do to propagate in Antarctic, we would be lucky to have a population at all to play football, soccer, etc.

Shoulda known I've got my priorities screwed up! After all, my Qualia's been THE biggest part of my recovery thus far...
Speaking of which, two films just blew me away on the Q. First was "The Life Aquatic"; this is one of my favorite films that cracks me up every time I see it. It looked fantastic on ComcastHD -- better than in the theater BY FAR! My wife -- who doesn't really get the film -- commented that she enjoyed it more over the Q006, as it was so much more interesting visually. The colors are spectacular in Q-Vision, and the entire film takes on a different (improved) look. With the sharpness of the Qualia you also pick out a lot more details and "Wes Anderson Inside Jokes" than you do on the theatrical print.
Also saw another fave last night; "L.A. Confidential". That looked fantastic; though it wasn't an absolute perfect transfer to HD, the colors and design of the film are done spectacularly well.
Also -- watched part of "The Aviator" (for your keeping score at home; yes, that makes three films) -- you could really see the break between the film's two different looks/color techniques. As I understand it, Scorcese wanted the first part of the film to represent the old color processes (3 strip, I think?); then the film changes midway through to a more Technicolor look. I'm pretty certain I'm botching the terminology, but this shift was far more evident in HD on the Qualia than in the theater.
I just have to repeat -- I am one picky MoFo, and the Qualia is the single greatest A/V purchase I've ever made. It comes closer to perfection than any other component I've ever owned, and has brought me and my family more pure, unadulterated pleasure over the past year than anything we've done to our system...
MotorMouth777 12-05-05, 02:30 AM you know....I've had the Q for 8 months now and it still looks huge. I can't find one single flaw with the picture but I'm just a simpleton. Got to watch my Chiefs spank Denver today in HD.......This TV is better than being there.
Best $$$ I've ever spent..................

I also got a chance to talk with a several people about the purported 70" (non-Qualia) SXRD rumored to debut in Aug. of 006. Nobody there could confirm that such a project would come to fruition in that time period as the 006 continues to sell so well.
I think that to give a definitive statement about this on-going controversy I would have to speak to a few other folks but, my *gut* feeling at this point in time is that it aint gonna happen....i.e. the 70" SXRD in an XBR version that is.
Take that with a grain of salt until I get triple confirmation but, my gut don't suffer from DEE-A-REE-A or CON-STEE-PATION.

Joel - Since input 4 is a component input, make sure all 3 cables are pushed in fully in the back of the set. I bet the Blue one is loose. Simple solution.

Yes, apparently it is not "dead in the water" as was previously reported to me.
At this meeting there were bigger big wigs present doing the talking and I specifically asked about the 1080p upgrade and they said that "we're looking at around fall of 006 if all goes well."
P.S. That's not the demise of the 006 but rather fall as in autumn of 006. :D

I don't know......I'll have to defer to the movie buffs.
I haven't been keeping an up-to-date score card but from what I recall .......now isn't it something like 5 out of the 6 major Hollywood studios are on the Blu-ray bandwagon, so without checking who released it, I would *guess* that the chances be good.
All I know for sure is that it wasn't mentioned in the first batch but, I was scribling them down like a maniac at the time.

I may be way off, but I would assume if they do an upgrade to 1080p that this entails an upgrade of the display engine, which means they could upgrade the SXRD chip. I wonder if the iris could be added or is that in the optics system?

BenDover 12-06-05, 09:13 AM btw, i had the chance to see the Q005 yesterday, briefly, and it looked quite nice. unfortunately i was at the end of my 2hr lunch :D so couldn't fiddle with it at all. it was playing a golf instruction show on inhd and so there was literally no black to check its black level performance. i'm not sure if this is a 1080p set, i couldn't tell by checking the qualia site; like the 006, you have to put your nose up to the screen to detect pixel structure so i'm guessing it is 1080p. not sure i could swing that purchase though...15K is pretty steep.

Penton-Man 12-07-05, 02:55 AM Don't know if this is against forum rules, if it is, ignore me....
I love my 006... unfortunately I have gone through 5 major eye surgeries over the past 2 years, and we just moved and the 006 now sits way to close to me... I need a size downgrade....
Can you all give me a fair used market price I could ask for this set... delivered March, doesn't get heavy use.. also have the Sony stand...
Also, if in the Los Angeles area interested, PM me and offer... I am hoping to do a local sale...
Thanks in advnace for everybodys help... M.
Well, welcome back! :)
I’m truly sorry for hearing about your eye problem. I do hope that you realize that the Doheny Eye Institute at USC is purty darn well respected in the eyeball world if you need further care and/or a second opinion.
I will talk to the head of the household about your 006 and see if I’ve got a chance at making you an offer........and yes, I'm local! :D
Tell me, are you still on the original bulb?
Also, have you heard from or do you know what’s up with colortv, as we all miss him?
Penton-Man 12-07-05, 02:58 AM Yikes, what was up with THAT guy?!?
I don’t know………. I guess some old school geek that hates life in general and that was his way of dealing with male menopause.
I DO know that flurry of responses ending with my post to you is the last time I post and/or even visit that thread. I just should have remembered what happened when umr posted his Qualia experience thread.
But………….since I'm a half glass FULL type of person, the upside is --now it has enabled me to delete a shortcut icon from my desktop so that I now have more room. :D
Penton-Man 12-07-05, 03:01 AM Just finished watching Cinderella Man. :)
GRRRRRRRRReat story and highly recommended movie!
Just bear with the first half of the DVD that demonstrates alot of graininess which is most likely intentionally induced for the *period aura* effect by director Ron Howard. The second half of the movie is more crystal clear and allows the 006 to strut her stuff more effectively, I think.
Aso, if your prone to such a thing, there are alot of fight scenes that tend to give you the munchies so have a lot of junk food and/or booze near your arm rest.
BenDover 12-07-05, 07:45 AM That is NOT a complication with little birds like Jessica Alba out there. :)
While that type of holography would certainly be welcome, I was speaking about the physical manner in which data is written to the medium :D
BenDover 12-07-05, 07:46 AM Anybody see tonight's "Boston Legal"? There was something unusual going on... can't quite put my finger on it...
I saw it but I'm not quite sure what you are alluding to?
Watched Unforgiven on DVD last night. My wife walked in while I was watching it and thought I was watching it on a Comcast HD channel. It was that good!
I am constantly amazed at how good even non HD material looks on this set.

PM.. Thanks for the wishes.... Luckily, my retina specialist is one of the top 3 in LA, and my cataract specialist/opth also co-wrote the first text book on LASIK... I am always in awe of my eye team... makes all of this AV stuff trivial sometimes...
colortv... no talky... I work on the same lot as him now.. I need to pm him and try and find him.
Will check the hours on the bulb when I get back.. Still on the original.. Might get a replacement in hand so that any buyer feels a little better about it :)
TO ALL... I'M OUT TIL SAT, SO IF YOU PM QUESTIONS AND OFFERS, I'LL GET BACK TO YOU THIS WEEKEND.

Well I couldn’t restrain myself, hehe. :D
I made a return visit to set the moron straight.
thesirjay 12-07-05, 01:15 PM FYI for those of you using your Qualia as a computer monitor... I have found that the perceivable flicker on pure white backgrounds (browser window/word for instance) is a bit too much. After playing around with settings I finally found that the culprit appears to be the powersave mode. Once I turned that off (which of course is nice for those blacker blacks) the flicker was gone and the 60hz was quite sufficient.
I saw it but I'm not quite sure what you are alluding to?Sorry, just a bad reference to the priest's fingers getting chopped off by "Mannix"...

Zechman 12-07-05, 04:04 PM By popular demand (well, the request of a popular guy), a re-post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5993142&&#post5993142) of one of Zechman's Greatest Hits:
How to check your lamp time on a Qualia 006*
I make no promises that this will work for anybody's Qualia 006 other than my own.
Although many have posted that this worked for them, changes in firmware could change things.
Don't muck around in the service menu if you don't know what you're doing.
But most of all, don't under any circumstances sue me.
(I'm counting on our resident Qualia-owning attorneys to run, not walk, to my defense!)
1) The set needs to be turned off.
2) Enter the service menu as already documented (<DISPLAY>,<5>,<VOLUME+>,<POWER>)
3) Press <JUMP> 3 times
4) Press <2> 12 times, not 9 times like the PDF file says
5) You should see the words "LAMP TIMER" and a number on the far right.
Since it says "LAMP TIMER" in big green letters, I assume that's your lamp time.
But what do I know--I'm just a geek with a big, expensive TV. Maybe it isn't.
7) Turn off the TV and don't do anything else. I warned you.

I noticed it also, but during the first quarter of the movie only. I thought that it might just be a bad transfer, maybe during the process of producing the DVD. It wasn't really grainy, but more just dull looking with less color. Did that make sense? :D
MotorMouth777 12-08-05, 12:54 AM My wife has been running the TV......(and using up my precious bulb life) during the day with the Qualia on the music channels on cable just to listen to christmas music. Pretty damn expensive radio if you ask me. I have a scientific atlanta 8300hd and I go HDMI into the Q and optical out to my Dennon 5800. When the TV is on the sound goes to the Dennon fine or I can listen to the sound through the TV speakers.....fine. BUT when I turn the TV off the optical sound out of the back of the 8300hd to the Dennon quits working. Seems the sound only goes to the Dennon when TV is on even though the sound is not going through the TV.
This is probably my set up error or something but is there a way to get sound to dennon without having her burn up my bulb just to listen to jingle bells all day.................
It is a no-win situation because I can't yell at her about it or I won't get any naughty time.

pawrampe 12-08-05, 07:42 AM So I just replaced the bulb in my Qualia.
Very simple proceedure, and amazing difference! I thought I was loosing my mind. The final drop off in performance was very fast, good thing I had a spare. Waiting the 2+ minutes for the TV to come back on was a nervous two minutes.
I hope they develop a bulb that lasts longer than the 9 months that I had, though I use the TV allot!

motor, i have a similar setup only my sound goes to my Yamaha receiver. I don't have the problem you describe though. I have the TV's speakers off in the TV's menu and on the 8300HD I have the volume set to fixed...not sure if that will help...i'll check for any other settings on the 8300 that might be relevant.

Anyone ever try to compare the values that are displayed on some of the service menu screens that are displayed along the way to getting your lamp timer hours, specifically the WEM screen?

See if the 8300 has a coaxial digital out. Usually an orange plug. If so, run it directly to the Denon 5800. That way, your wife can just switch inputs on the Denon and listen to the Christmas music without running it through the 006.
pawrampe 12-08-05, 11:15 AM I turned on the TV today after having replaced the bulb last night. The TV started up, but the light did not come on, and the Standby light started blinking five times then stop, five times then stop...
I pressed the power button again, and it came up fine. Turned it off about two hours later, waited 30 minutes, turned it on again, and it came right up without an issue.
I called for a service call, two locations provided by Sony, and the service department did not know much if anything about this TV.
Question is if someone has seen this before? Right now I'm leaning towards not fixing it until it does it again.

I believe the five blinking lights signifies a problem with the lamp. I would doublecheck that it is installed/seated properly.
Check out brt3's site (http://homepage.mac.com/raythompson/SonyQualia006/Menu11.html) for the codes, service manual, etc.

so who holds the record for the most number of hours on a bulb before replacing it...And has anyone actually been able to tell; I guess if you could tell the bulb was visibly dimming you might have the forethought to check the hour-meter; otherwise it's kinda tough to check if the bulb's out. Does it reset automatically once you change the bulb, or do you perform a "reset" (have to dig out that service manual!)...

thestewman 12-08-05, 08:39 PM Question
Do any fellow Qualians have experience with any brands or types of component switch ?
Possibly some of you already are using a component switch.
I know there are several brands and am looking for the best one to go with the 006.
I think low signal insertion loss, wide bandwidth and dependability would be three criteria.
I have just have too many analog HD component outputs to mate up with the two on the 006.
I also know there are manual switches, remote control operated switches and signal sensing switches.

Question: Do any fellow Qualians have experience with any brands or types of component switch? Possibly some of you already are using a component switch.
LOOK HERE! (http://www.zektor.com/products/index.html)
Zektor makes great stuff; I've used one of their switchers for years and am very happy...
Here's (http://www.cable-electronics.com/Product13.aspx) another one. I just bought this for my 60" SXRD and VPL-HS10 front projector and couldn't detect any loss in signal quality from my Dish 942 receiver or my Sony '9000ES DVD player. I was very impressed with this unit's construction, especially considering the price (I paid about $130).

Yeah, that makes sense because it denotes a change and it may be a reflection simply of our seating positions and my sensitivity to *noisy* films. What's your eyeball to screen distance and are you in "Pro" mode on the 006?
I just generalized about the 1st half....it could have been really only the 1st quater or third.
I think divedude has a player more in the same price range as mine, what did you think dd?
You doin O.K. ?

so who holds the record for the most number of hours on a bulb before replacing it...if the counter is still running, who has the greatest number of hours so far on their first bulb?
I took delivery the 3rd week of January 2005 (I think), I think I do a decent amount of watching. Will check this weekend.

so who holds the record for the most number of hours on a bulb before replacing it...if the counter is still running, who has the greatest number of hours so far on their first bulb?
I voluntarily changed my bulb at 1586 hours, since the picture seemed a tad more dim. The new bulb was REALLY bright for the first 30 or so hours and has now leveled off and the picture is great.
It's not hard to change the bulb.
pawrampe 12-09-05, 08:10 AM I am afraid now to change my bulb! :)
Don't be afraid the swap the bulb. I had to open it up again (surprisingly simple), removed the bulb, put it back in keeping in mind that the connections on the right had to sit properly and firmly.
Since that time I have started the TV twice, and both times the TV came up perfectly.
Moral of the story is to make sure the power contacts are seated properly.

hmmm, so you mean your first bulb wasn't actually "tapped" out before you replaced it? I wonder if you popped it back in now if you would notice a drastic difference.
b/c my Q is in an area that is tightly controlled for light/sound, I am still perfectly happy with the brightness of the picture...i still find myself squinting at times when a bright scene hits the screen. and football looks spectacular on a nice sunny day...
How do you find out the number of hours on the bulb and what is the avg. life thanks

Yes, I did replace it even though it was still functioning well; just not as bright and I was really curious how a new bulb would look. Once I put in the new bulb I just decided to leave it in, and haven't put back the original one.

½ dozen
One to open up the Q and explore --- Diverdude
One to perform the extraction --- Umr
One to insert the new globe--- jb007 (wasn’t he the first?)
One to maker sure everything’s legit --- Joel
One to entertain the group with amusing non sequiturs during the event --- PM
One to document it for future generations of Qualians --- Zeckman

This passed me by(as I don’t keep current with the front projector stuff) so this news may be a couple months old ………I believe the MSRP of the 004 jumped up about 3K to 33K now, so it looks like FilmMixer is getting a good deal on his Rubinski.

I just generalized about the 1st half....it could have been really only the 1st quater or third.

divedude 12-09-05, 05:07 PM so who holds the record for the most number of hours on a bulb before replacing it...if the counter is still running, who has the greatest number of hours so far on their first bulb?
BenDover,
I just checked mine and it has 2,699 hours. I have had my 006 since the end of March. I have 2 spares just in case this bulb doesn't last forever :D It still looks great, but I may be like Kramer on the test drive . . . running on fumes

How many Qualians does it take to change an 006 bulb?

Any tidbits of knowledge to throw out to us videophilically challenged hobbyists to make our lives (and eyes and ears!) easier?
Not sure I have much to add on the video side, but I have perfected an audio setup/calibration offering that is really cool. I am able to significantly improve peoples surround sound systems performance. I use a high quality (fast/accurate) microphone along with my knowledge of applying FFT analysis to frequency responses (something I have done for decades as an engineer) and an automated test rig that lets me test the complete system in less than a minute. I worked on a system with a Yamaha RXV-2500 that had auto EQ. My method wiped the floor with theirs. The client was stunned at how good his system sounded when I was done. Before the sound was bloated. After I was done it was much more precise while maintaining good punch.

Guys,
I watched Cinderella Man last night and really enjoyed it :D
The video during the first 40 minutes of the movie (it's 145 minutes long) kind of looked like a second or third generation tape copy, a little grainy and not up to par with the video quality of the rest of the movie. This morning I watched parts of it on another DVD player connected to my Sony 40" Bravia LCD in the bedroom. The same problem, so it is definitely a problem with the DVD. I thought it might be a problem with compression, but the bit count looked about the same across the DVD. And it had nothing to do with the layer it was recorded on, because when it improved it was still on the same layer.
So I went looking on the web and found this in a review:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=19116
Quality Control Department
Video & Audio Quality:
The 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer for Cinderella Man features a quality presentation that's good but not quite perfect. Many of the darker scenes are a bit grainy and murky---not overly soft, but the black levels are lacking in a few areas. Even so, this stylish film looks excellent otherwise, boasting a solid palette and a nice level of detail.
http://www.theasc.com/magazine/june05/cinderella/page3.html
In general, Totino strove to keep the light levels as low as possible, and he cites this as the chief reason he filmed Cinderella Man in Super 35mm 2.35:1 rather than anamorphic 2.40:1. “Much as I’d love to do an anamorphic film, I tend to work in the toe of the negative, so I need lenses that will look good wide open, and you can’t shoot most anamorphics wide open,” he says. “A lot of our interiors and night scenes were shot at T2.” In the shadows, the stop was even lower: “When Jay’s light meter goes below T1, it reads ‘E,’” the cinematographer laughs. “We would joke about that being ‘E for Enough’ — the meter says it’s enough, so let’s shoot!”
Totino’s tendency to work in the toe is most noticeable in scenes set in the Braddocks’ basement apartment, where the only light comes from a few high windows and possibly an open door during the day, and from a few scattered practicals at night. At one point, when the family’s electricity is turned off, candlelight is their sole illumination.
For anyone that has not seen the DVD, please do not let this keep you from watching it, as it is an excellent movie and a little bit of grain at the beginning is not a big deal. :)

I figure I need to step it up a bit and average about one post per day, which should get me to the magical plateau (for home run hitters anyway) of 500 posts, to coincide with the anniversary of my receipt of the Q006. Yeah, but I’ll bet you sure as hell keep dem Civil Action Complaints in check…..as I suspect to be getting one for slander from that “other guy” for just telling the truth that he appears to have been the most successful out of a whole lot of LOSER sperm contenders for entrance to the egg.*

For anyone that has not seen the DVD, please do not let this keep you from watching it, as it is an excellent movie and a little bit of grain at the beginning is not a big deal. :)
Definitely, and I might add that originally I thought that the graininess might have been intentionally done for Are-TEASE-TIC purposes (olden times with the family suffering during the depression and such) as it appears to completely clear up (for the remainder of the movie) during the scene outside the church or shortly thereafter when the manager informs him that ….good times have arrived with said manager procuring a new fight for Braddick's ?sp livelihood, if my memory is still intact.

If so, and you could keep your eyes off the models for a second, did you notice the same type of occasional tiling/pixilation first described by colortv way back when the Grammys were broadcast last Feb.?
The reason I ask is that I don’t recall seeing any such artifacts during the Victoria Secret’s show and I would have expected to see something with all the strobes and such popping off. Of course, mine eyes had seen the glory of the coming of the last model down the runway and was awaiting the next with earnest anticipation.
Motormouth, whatever you say in regards to this, I consider your opinion even more biased than mine.
I re-watched this fashion show (PURELY for further thorough videophilic critique and review, of course :o ) and there IS some of that darn tiling present intermittently throughout the show, I just can’t figure if it is motion related due the babes walking fast on the cat-walk towards the camera man or related to the strobes of the photogs present at the event.
Regardless, I’m wondering if the Algolith Mosquito*will cure this problem or if it is inherently related to the HD filming process at the origin.
*brt, have you gotten yours yet, and how about the motorized wheel chair?

$100 when included with video plus $50/channel for parametric equalization when it is available. My unique automated system allows me to offer this service at an outstanding price point.

Jeff, what does that mean..."$50/channel"- and what would I need for a 7.1 system......esp. since #6 and #7 speakers don't seem to add a helluva alot to the system to begin with?

In regards to CES, no offence to anyone in that area, but I have a strong aversion towards that city (acquired from childhood) so I don't plan on attending until it changes venues.......next year or so?

BenDover 12-11-05, 05:47 PM Yikes!

Not intentionally :D
I was referring to the bit thrown in about me ;)
Jeff, what what does that mean..."$50/channel"- and what would I need for a 7.1 system......esp. since #6 and #7 speakers don't seem to add a helluva alot to the system to begin with?
It depends on the system. Almost all systems I do only cost $100 for the whole enchilada. However, if you have something like a RXV-2500, Krell Showcase, Krell HTS or Velodyne subwoofer I can equalize individual speaker problems to improve the sound even more. This is a more time consuming task requiring modeling of each channel individually. My cost then increases, but so does the price. Someone with this capability could reduce the cost by only equalizing the channels that are most important or those with the most problems.
For example, the center channel is very important for voices. Equalization can reduce boominess that is frequently caused by less than stellar placement. Surrounds that are placed near the ceiling also frequently have excessive response near 200 Hz that can be removed with equalization. Subwoofers frequently also have peaks that can be smoothed with equalization.
This is not to say equalization is required to achieve an improvement in sound quality. Proper speaker placement, subwoofer setup, level adjustment, delay timing and crossover adjustment is critical for quality surround sound and this is all included in the base price.
Penton-Man 12-11-05, 05:52 PM Not intentionally :D
I was referring to the bit thrown in about me ;)
Good, because at first I thought you were being intentional...... or teasing jb about a urological problem  .....and no I'm not a plumber "Dude, Huh?", never have been.

Thanks for the detailed response Jeff, as now it all makes more sense to moi.
Just don't plan on movin my speakers!......
Regardless, I’m wondering if the Algolith Mosquito*will cure this problem or if it is inherently related to the HD filming process at the origin.
*brt, have you gotten yours yet, and how about the motorized wheel chair? So far -- NADA! At this point I am seriously reconsidering; a six-month delay is death in this biz given that products become obsolete in a year. Probably an over-reaction, but I'm REAL tired of getting the runaround and hearing excuses...

divedude 12-11-05, 07:33 PM The Dukes of Hazzard looked very good on the 006. Actually brt, I believe we have until Jan. 18 – which I presume is our anniversary date (the date our founder, jb007 initiated this little trip into Qualiadom) so…..
based upon my amateurish math, we’ve got about 5 weeks to accomplish 11 more pages.
As brt mentioned, Dwayne, can you figure out all the details for us? But seems to me at first glance,(esp. with brt's Algolith EVENTUALLY being delivered) that we’ve got a damn good chance !
Man-oh-man!!! Just saw the extended trailer for "King Kong" on INHD; it looked simply incredible in Q-Vision. You will believe an ape can fly...

Actually brt, I believe we have until Jan. 18... based upon my amateurish math, we’ve got about 5 weeks to accomplish 11 more pages.Good point; I was under the assumption we were shooting for the 300 pages by year's end...
Watching "Ray" in HD; it made me think about why I loved "Walk The Line" so much. Not that "Ray" isn't great, but it spends a LOT of time focused on returning back to his childhood trauma over and over. J.R. Cash's life was actually quite similar, down to the loss of a brother for which he was blamed and substance abuse (no blindness or racial issues, though). "Ray" continually jumps back to the past, instead of showing it once and assuming you understand. In "Line" they show the back-story once, and you instantly get the effect it had on Cash's life. Plus, Taylor Hackford missed some of the fantastically funny (or surreal) Ray Charles stories, like Ray's love of driving...

I am scheduling individuals for my January 9th -14th So. California calibration tour. Please PM or email me if you want to setup a date and time.
Zechman 12-12-05, 08:45 PM After a quick statistical check, it appears that at our current posting rate, we should get to page 300 at roughly January 2 or 3.
Since I had originally challenged the Qualia Elites to make page 300 by the anniversary of the 006, which I consider to be the day the first person got one--January 7th, 2005, by none other than our own jb007.
So it looks like we're doing just fine, if maybe cutting it a little close.

Zechman 12-12-05, 09:18 PM "How does one calculate such a thing?", you might ask. Or perhaps you might not. In the former case, you're in luck, I'll tell you. In the latter case, screw you, I'm gonna tell you anyway! :p
First off, the first post on any page number P is (P-1)*30+1.
[In the C language, that could be optimized to (--P*30)++, and at 32 posts per page it could even be (--P<<5)++, but I digress.]
The page that post number N appears on is N/30 + 1, dropping fractions.
Okay, so the top of page 300 will be post number 8971. (The last post on page 300 will be number 9000.) UMR's post right above mine is number 8693, which means that we have to put another 278 posts on the scoreboard to get there.
The best way to get our current posting rate is to see how long it took to put up the previous 278 posts. So we search for post number 8415 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6582393&&#post6582393), on page number 281, which we see was posted by jb007 himself on 11-22-2005.
11-22-2005 was 20 days ago. So if we keep up the same average posting rate for that period, we'll hit page 300 in 20 days, which is December 32nd, er, January 1st. Throw in an extra day or two for the holidays, and your Humble Historian guestimates the 2nd or the 3rd. Then again, maybe I'm wrong here*, and people will be posting more when we're all home more, and posting the AVS equivalent of Christmas cards and getting into a spirited discussion of what we all got for Christmas (or . . . whatever. For me, it's Christmas.). That'd be fun, right?
So there you have it. This what you have to do to keep up a "brainy" reputation (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6699801&&#post6699801) around here.

Dwayne, not to be nitpicky (like pointing out you meant 2005, not 2004 :p), but does your statistical analysis take the holidays into account? In other words, does the daily post count go up or down on 12/25, 12/31 and 1/1? :D

and a beeeeeyouteefull young lady who lights up the screen ....

I highly recommend that you rent this. I haven't enjoyed a western so much since "Lonesome Dove".
You guys may recall that one of the very few issues that was raised about the 006 was the fact that the video 6 input (HDMI) with the Comcast-provided Motorola DTC-6412 set top box resulted in double images when switching to Input 6 if a 720p program was being broadcast (i.e., ABC-HD or FOX-HD), and that this "glitch" went away simply by changing the channel. I think Penton also had this problem IIRC.
I recently upgraded my 6412 by getting "version III" of the box from my local Comcast shop.
Guess what?
No more problem, which proves conclusively that the issue was the box and not the 006.
By the way, since I haven't said this in quite a while...
What a great set! It still draws rave reviews from all who see it in my abode. Even with the set off, it looks majestic.

My friend you do remember correctly.
And I forgot to tell everyone when I switched from a Moto6200 box to Adelphia's (soon to be Time Warner) Moxi box (actually it's a Moto box with Moxi brains) the whole issue you described with Input 6 also disappeared for moi.
So it WAS the box, NOT the TV.
Question is.....will the Algolith Mosquito (digital version) like ALL cable boxes?

Regarding LCD panels, I have a Sony Bravia, Sharp Aquos, and another small Sony in the kitchen, but who's counting?
The Bravia is a better picture than the Sharp, which I thought was the best when I got it earlier this year. To my eyes, the biggest improvement in the Bravia is contrast and black levels and the processing with standard definition sources.

Thanks Sophie.
I have seen the "Bravia" (hate the name btw; what is with all these weird product names companies are coming out with...) and thought it looked the best at a couple of local B&M shops. I was surprised at how bad it made some of the other LCD sets look...of course, it could have been setup issues which I did not bother to adjust on each and every set since I was only casually looking. Now that the wife has "tasked" me with getting a flat panel display for the den, I will start looking seriously, but probably not until after the holidays. Now if only every "Honey, do..." list could contain an entry directing the purchase of high-end electronics I could die a happy man.

BenDover,
I have the Sony KDL-V40XBR1 (didn't use the "B" name, since you don't like it) in the bedroom and love it. I purchased it because it has an excellent picture and will not burn in. I wish it would have been available in a 50" version. I also wish it had 2 HDMI inputs.

JimP,
I watch mine in the bedroom with no lights on prior to going to sleep. I have not noticed any problems with watching it in the dark. Can you describe the "glowing black thing"?
Sophie,
Does your Bravia look good in a dark room?
Penton-Man 12-14-05, 12:14 PM Well, well, here we are running around like chickens with our heads chopped off  bumping into the barnyard doors theorizing, speculating and assuming the merits and what not of the digital Mosquito and our resident calibrator extraordinaire (now in the Chicago area?) already did a purty dang good review on the analog version of the Squeeter bug………
http://www.accucal.org/reviews/mosquito.pdf
jeff,
I am particularly interested in the last paragraph of the first page of your review --------
Do you plan on getting one of the digital versions to evaluate in the near future and if not, any theories on whether the digital version can or can’t cure the pixilation/tiliing that brt and I have described during fast action stuff or pans with broadcast HD material? Or is that just something that we have to live with?
I’m really happy that you’re familiar with this Algolith product(at least the Analog version at this point) because I assume that if any of us do purchase it, you can also do your calibration magic with some knowledge of the benefits and pitfalls of this video processor.
BenDover 12-14-05, 12:21 PM Awwww, you can use the name...especially since the model designation only serves to confuse this aging mind :)

BenDover,
Yes, unfortunately 40" is the largest of the Bravia. The Q005 is 46", and I guess the "5" stands for 5 times as expensive  I have heard talk of a 46" Bravia coming out, but that could also be someone confusing the Qualia 005 with the Bravia brands.
Sharp has a 45", but I didn't think it looked as good as the Sony and it did not have a timer to turn the TV on and off at the same time each day. For a larger LCD, Sharp has a 65" at a nifty $20K.

Yeah, $20K would be a little too rich for my blood :)
I suspect they will release a tri luminous based, non-qualia, display within a year's time like they did with the SXRD technology. If I can wait that long, I might just do that otherwise it will either have to be settle for a smaller LCD panel or maybe venture into plasma land. If my wife can be talked out of the flat panel form factor I will likely invest in the non-Q version of SXRD.

Neo2005,
Some time ago a group of hyper-intelligent pan dimensional beings decided to finally answer the great question of Life, The Universe and Everything.
To this end they built an incredibly powerful computer, Deep Thought. After the great computer programme had run (a very quick seven and a half million years) the answer was announced.

brt-With regards to your Pio 59avi player, does it output 480i simultaneously thru the component and HDMI ports so that you can hook it up to your 006 in a variety of fashions? Don’t laugh umr!, I’m just thinking ahead. That's a good question; now where DID I put that manual? I'll get back to you on that one...
;)
divedude 12-14-05, 07:42 PM ALWAYS keep the camera housing between YOU and the shark’s mouth with your arms not quite fully extended (TO ALLOW FOR RECOIL UPON IMPACT  )
It is understood that some camera housings are bigger than others as are some shark’s mouths.
PM,
Good for Shark, Barracuda, Bumphead Wrasse, Sea Lion, Sea Snake, etc. And from past experience, it makes for some exciting video :D

DV-59AVi/480i/HDMI/Mosquito/Dragonfly/Qualia 006
to
DV-59AVi/480i/HDMI/Qualia 006???
If so, more training of Elmo will be required to handle the delicate cable hookup part of the grand comparo...
:D
TRANSLATION... This means brt would like to be ready for Mrs. brt when she dresses up in that SPECIAL Christmas nightie thing he bought her from Victoria Secrets. :DGuess that takes us right back to your "angle of the dangle" comment... :D
