brt3: And some serious waterproofing :pMan, maybe some of our resident genius-level Qualians can answer me this, but there is something in Rhodesian Ridgeback Drool that is seriously toxic to plastic. Whenever I try to detail the ElmoMobile it is impossible to clean off many of the drool marks; they literally etch the plastic. I guess it's OK as long as I keep the drool away from the screen. I rather doubt, however, that the dog drool would act as a contact enhancer...

brt3,

Just make sure you don't watch any shows with female Rhodesian Ridgebacks. There could be some serious drooling on the screen :p

PM,

Good for Shark, Barracuda, Bumphead Wrasse, Sea Lion, Sea Snake, etc. And from past experience, it makes for some exciting video :D
For me….think Galapagos shark charging (at probably more than 15 knots from poor visibility water) to take a taste of my right leg which I ASSUME appeared to represent some portion of a poor underfeed sea lion.

I actually got it on a strip of Super 8 film  which by now is probably fungus infested in the film can.

P-M -- would your evil scheme involve me comparing, perhaps:

DV-59AVi/480i/HDMI/Mosquito/Dragonfly/Qualia 006
to
DV-59AVi/480i/HDMI/Qualia 006???

If so, more training of Elmo will be required to handle the delicate cable hookup part of the grand comparo...
:D
No, I’m mistaken or your misunderstanding me…..as I see no component in your set-up.

Forget the Dragonfly, I just want to know if you can run the Pio at 480i simultaneously...............
#1 - thru the Mosquito with one cable solution (such as HDMI) for lousy DVD transfers and
#2 - bypass the Mosquito entirely(if need be- for great DVD transfers) and just run the Pio directly (via 480i)into the Q 006 with another cable set such as component

.........if you don’t know what I mean, read umr’s review referenced above, its quite good.

ACTUALLY correct the above, I'm wondering if the Pio 59 avi would output 480P simultaneously thru component and HDMI (to take advantage of the 480i>480p thing done inside the Pioneer rather than inside the Qualia)

If there is a dangle, much less an angle to that dangle, upon viewing the little lady adorning her new Vic secret attire, PM needs to ship you a few of his little blue pills, if not for anything but to save your marriage. Just think of how that would be interpreted by the Mrs. If there were any dangle !

:eek:Just to be clear -- the only things exhibiting the slightest dangle are the spherical objects that are supposed to do so. The rest of the apparatus should, "wood", and oughtta work just fine... exactly like my Qualia 006!

This date in history . . .

From the Sony Jumps on 1080P Bandwagon with 70" Set thread:

December 15, 2004

Hello AVS forum readers, if the Algolith Mosquito seemed a bit steep for your budget, well we have great news just in time for the Holiday Season. As we get closer to CES in early January, we thought we'd offer a great gift to you all and a preview of the CES show special for the Mosquito... The Mosquito is now 2495$. This new price is valid until January 15th, stocks are limited.. so hurry!

Happy Holidays from everyone at Algolith!

I saw the Mits 73" at Magnolia the other night, was not sure if it was 1080p, but did see the price of just under 6 grand. It did not look any bigger than the Q006, and the PQ was not that great (don't know if it was the source). I'd still spend the 13 grand for the Qualia over this TV anytime.

Well, well, here we are running around like chickens with our heads chopped off  bumping into the barnyard doors theorizing, speculating and assuming the merits and what not of the digital Mosquito and our resident calibrator extraordinaire (now in the Chicago area?

PM

You need to emphasize the "CALIBRATOR EXTRAORDINAIRE".

I thought the performance and picture of my unit was flawless and I was reluctant to have anyone touch my Qualia. Jeff just left my residence and I am still dazzled by his expertise and knowledge, especially of the Qualia.

Jeff walks in, looks at the Qualia, and says "the picture is too blue". He sees my equipment and says, "this is going to fun and the results will be spectacular".
He brought a lot of equipment, so set up took a little while.

You should also know that I was viewing the 006 in the Standard mode with the bulb at the reduced power setting since I have the Qualia in a room with subdued lighting.

Here is what he found during the preliminary testing phase.

The picture was too blue.
The gray scale was way above 6500k
Magenta was too purple.
Cyan was too Blue
Black level was too high
Edge enhancement was visible.
Overscan was shifted 3% to the right.

And that was only the video portion.

The sound system was incorrectly balanced with a huge bass suckout between 200 to 400 cps.
Though Jeff deftly runs through the service menu like he wrote the software He spent six hours setting the Qualia perimeters. I watched intently and soon realized that a user could never set the items Jeff adjusted. Either because they don't appear on the user menu or the 16 bit precision of the service menu allows a precise adjustment and perfect setup.

The results are a picture that has beautiful true colors on all the inputs I use (six).
No edge enhancement is visible. The overscan was shifted back and now the picture edge on the right side is visible.

Jeff used a RTA audio analyzer and was able to remove the bass suckout and precisely balance the surround system.

Am I pleased, Absolutely. My Qualia is even better than before if that's possible.

If I want to see the overly bright screen with exaggerated colors again. I can choose Vivid or Standard mode instead of the Pro mode.

My Pioneer DV09 DVD was not producing very good video and I was not using it regularly hoping to buy a Blu-Ray soon. Jeff changed all that and breathed new life into my 5 year old player. The DV09 using the component connections is as good as most DVD players now.

Before Jeff left he printed out all the test results before and after he had set all the adjustments and wrote them to the Qualia memory.

Again. Am I pleased ? Absolutely. Was the Sony incorrectly set at the factory ?Probably not. Jeff just knows how to set it up better and more accurately.
The result is the colors look more real and the picture looks more natural.

Everyone,

The endoscopy was a breeze with no adverse after effects, except I felt like I was made of lead whenever I walked around this afternoon. I guess that was from the after-effects of the Versed and Fentanyl used for sedation. The Doc said the tumor looked much smaller and a whole lot better than it did last May, so that is good news. :)

For PM, here is some technical lingo:

=> Mass effect distal esophagus and cardia. Multiple biopsies taken.
=> Mass effect cardia. Multiple biopsies taken.
=> The pylorus appeared normal.
=> the duodenum appeared normal.

I should hear early next week about the results of the biopsies.

So in the interim, Mini and I are going to grill a couple of burgers and watch The 40-Year-Old Virgin tonight on the Qualia 006.

Outstanding, that is a great endorsement ESPECIALLY from someone that was hesitant to have the calibration to begin with. Thanks so much for sharing the calibration experience with us-- as it should provide others more information in their decision making process in this regard.

Sounds like umr hit another Qualia home run !

Well I *think* that’s good news, but it is awfully difficult for me to comment without ALOT more details regarding your past medical history, not to mention the fact that I don’t normally muck around in this anatomical area.

I don’t know if you mean “tumor” to be a malignancy that is still present and just smaller, if so, keep in mind that the G.I. guys try to shrink these things as much as possible before the surgeons then proceed to do their thing.

If we’re throwing around the word “tumor” to represent anything from a benign lesion to edema causing the mass effect described in the Endo report, that is indeed great news.

If you had some mucosal ulceration to begin with, it sounds like that surely has resolved grossly…..which should account for the decreased discomfort and pain that you are now experiencing following eating or drinking……and at least some success with the chemo, etc.

The path will eventually tell the tale.

I’m glad all things went well. :)

Today I discovered that the Pentagon City mall (a.k.a. the "Fashion Centre at Pentagon City") has a SonyStyle store on the second floor, and sure enough, there in the back is a Qualia 006 in a little alcove with subdued lighting.

What makes it doubly interesting is that they also have a 60" GW SXRD set in the same alcove, with the same video feed (didn't look like it was HD, BTW), set up in a way that makes it fairly easy to look at both of them side-by-side.

Unfortunately, I didn't get much of a chance to look at them critically, because of course BRRRRINGGG goes my cell phone, duty calls, and my lunch break gets cut short.

Maybe next time I'll bring in my remote and see how long I can fiddle with the settings on both of them before they throw me out! ;)

You don’t need legal counsel when you’re dealing with a fellow Qualian, your professional record is spotless, you tell the truth given the data presented and you carry a malpractice tail that has so many zeroes behind it that Zechman would call it a zillion dollars :) coverage.

Now, in regards to Civil Action Complaints for exposing trollers for what they are (too much time spent in the prison showers ;) )…………….well, I hand all that stuff to my sis (former White House staff attorney for one of dem good Republican  Presidents) and as far as I’m concerned they can all stand in line to get a piece of my wallet as everything else is in somebody else’s name. :D

One would hope that, like the several Jewish and handful of Muslim friends that I have, non-Christians will not be "offended" (a CRIME these days!!! a CRIME, I tell ya!!! ;) ) by the fact of the existence of a holiday that happens to have its origins in Christianity--like many other things in this country do.

[a woman asks a question about the shark Zissou is hunting]
Festival Director: [translating] That's an endangered species at best. What would be the scientific purpose of killing it?
Steve Zissou: Revenge.

Steve Zissou: I'm going to find it and I'm going to destroy it. Possibly with dynamite.

Steve Zissou: Anne-Marie, do all the interns get Glocks?
Anne-Marie Sakowitz: No, they all share one.

Steve Zissou: Can you hear the Jack Whales singing?
Ned Plimpton: [Tanker goes off] Beautiful. I wonder what they're saying?
Steve Zissou: Well actually that's a Sludge Tanker over there...
[Several whales sing]
Steve Zissou: There you go!

[during the rescue op, Steve sees a young Filipino boy sitting on the beach, roasting a crab on a spit. He raises his spear gun]
Bill Ubell: No, Captain! That's Cedric. He's a friend.
Steve Zissou: Merci, Cedric. Remind me, we'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Steve Zissou: Supposedly Cousteau and his cronies invented the idea of putting walkie-talkies into the helmet. But we made ours with a special rabbit ear on the top so we could pipe in some music.

Anne-Marie Sakowitz: We're being led on an illegal suicide mission by a selfish maniac.

Too bad it had a lame story to it, though the action scenes were pretty good.

Hello Ron-san:

Well, we have two grown Sons. Our first house was in Milford and used to buy highend audio even then. In fact, I think Krell is in Milford! I also remember Scully in Bridgeport.

I have been to Japan...mostly Kawasaki and Nagano about 45 times.

P.S. san is also 3 so I am MPSAN...MP3 get it?

mpsan (ok Dave),
Tweeter in North Haven says the warehouse in Mass ships about 10 per month. At least a few of those must end up in your old home state.

Ron - Holy Cross High (Waterbury), originally from Oxford, Ct. -now with wife a 3 little ones in Madison.

P.S. My biggest export dealer is in Japan and I am officially Ron-san on all communications. I haven't been there (as you have a zillion times).

Hi Guys...
I'm back! It's been a while since I posted... Sorry! The 006 is great, but I thought I'd share with you all a recent discovery.

Over the past weeks, I have noticed the picture degrading. I have a Fosgate FP1 with an active Matrix Reference Screen, and a Tektronix Waveform/Vectorscope
in the system to monitor output. Many of you know that I produce TV commercials and other stuff, so when I started to see the picture dimming, and the waveform monitor still producing a quality signal, the only way I could account for these findings was a lamp on it's way out.

I went into the Service menu and found that I had 1761 hours on the lamp. The set was in use since the end of March-early April so I thought it was odd. After coming back to the forum and searching "Lamp" I found that a few other people who shared our close delivery date also had changed lamps. I can't remember if it was Payton who changed it out after only 1500+ hours. I also remember reading in one of the threads that the lamp was good for 5000 hours, and another for about 3000 hours. Which is correct is anybody's guess. The reality is the lamp is only good until it goes bad. (Now there's a friggin piece brilliance! Duh?)

Anyway, I order a lamp for $300 bucks, and then I decided to call Qualia. I didn't have a serial number handy, but was able to identify the date of purchase, and the hours on the lamp, and Sony-Qualia told me..." No Problem, we'd be happy to send you a replacement lamp!" No second thoughts, no argument, no problem.
There was only one guy on duty, no call que, no "press 3 to stay on hold another 45 minutes", a real guy came on and asked how he could help me. And he did!

I now have a second lamp coming from Sony as a spare, and I'm delighted. I do have to say that my picture really sux now, but it's just for a day or so.

In short, I have no idea what the real lifespan of the lamps are. I'd like anyone and everyone to share their lamp experiences so we can find out a close target as to actual lamp life. Of course your milage may vary - Batteries not included, and Object in Mirror are larger than they appear!

Oh, and everyone... Have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

kaduku,

I also thought "The Island" looked excellent on the 006. Once the action started, about half way thru the movie, it was just about non-stop, and the 7.1 sound effects were very cool. In my opinion, the big star of the movie was the Chevrolet SSR, but I may be a little prejudice.

DD, you seem to be watching all the movies that I've been viewing lately. If you didn't see it in the theaters, and even if you did, you must see Wedding Crashers when it is released on DVD in Jan '06.

Here's to your continued good health!

BenDover,

I am just trying to get the most out of my Netflix subscription. ;) I always put all the upcoming "hot movies" in my queue a couple of months ahead of time. That usually gets them shipped and in my mailbox the Tuesday they are released. Usually, I don't watch them until the weekend, too much TV to watch during the week. :D Looking forward to "Wedding Crashers" the first week of January.

Well if umr is our calibrator extraordinaire you sure as heck are our survivor extraordinaire what with CABG ….coronary artery bypass graft surgery followed by an E-G junction neoplasm.

Sounds like you haven’t skipped a beat or movie since the endoscopy.

Let’s hope for the best with the pathology reports. :)

PM,

Thanks, I just hope the pathologist can tell the difference between live cancer and dead cancer  I don't want to undergo surgery unless I have to.

From the Sony Bravia thread, I see umr has scheduled a ISF on a 40" Bravia, so looks like he does LCD also.

Not to worry shouldn't be a problem but in any event if they can't or are equivocating about their findings....

It would not be a bad idea to tell your Doc to have the slides sent to the A.F.I.P. (Armed Forces Institute of Pathology) to have the microscope gurus there give the final word.

Hey, I had my own medical emergency in the household today, I'll try to write it up in story form (for optimal entertainment value) in an hour or so.

How could you not love a film with quotes like:

Klaus Daimler: I hear what you're saying, but I think you misjudge the guy.

:D

Well I had my own family *medical crisis* this morning.

Instead of the DVD “Girls Gone Wild”…think “Gallbladder Gone Wild”  .

Pops (my Dad) woke up this a.m. with severe RUQ pain and diagnosed himself so it was off to the L’os- Pee-tal.(always thinking of LCOS :) )

Picture this….

Setting - a small hospital room.

Occupants –
1. A cantankerous old-timer (pops) who just happens to be an old school retired belly cutter in his late eighties having belly pain.

2. HIS surgeon, a new-school personal friend of mine.

3. Penton-Man strategically placed between the above two in the role of PEACEMAKER.

And action……..(editor’s got me rolling here)

Cantankerous old-timer who was trained at one of those “arvard” hospitals in the N.E. is matching wits and antagonizing his new-school surgeon trained at one of those west coast institutions.

They spared over everything imaginable even remotely related to the biliary ductal system and gall bladder from anomalies to post surgical care.

FINALLY, it ended when pops realizes that he had forgotten to bring his SPECIAL toothbrush and ordered me to go home and fetch it and which also gave his doctor some quiet time.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh !

The HDMI Mosquito is out. Do expect some teething problems with the HDMI stuff. Algolith is very resposive to fixing it and getting it right. The quality of the processing is exactly the same between the HDMI and non HDMI. The Dragonfly is not yet out. Algolith is awaiting some necessary part. I think we will see it soon but early adopters should expext teething problems and have the patience to deal with them. Since the 006 won't accept 1080p in, using a processor you would have to feed the 006 say 480p, 720p, or 1080i. Now I am not talking high def 720p or 1080i. You would not use n external processor with those because there would be no point. The Sony won't accept 1080p and back to back processors are worse than one. I am talkng starting with 480i. There is little point in using a procesor to take 480i to 1080i and then going through the 006's internal 1080i deinterlacer. (You start with 480i, deinterlace to 480p, scale to 540p and then deinterlace to 1080i (or something like that), and then let the Sony deinterlace it to 1080p. Things would be worse. If you feed p in at 480 or 720, you still would go throughthe 006's scalerr to get to 1080p. No sense in using two sclaers so gong to 70p externally is out). The only real advantage would be feeding 480p in, then you would deinterlace 480i in the outside box (say using Realta etc technology, better han the Sony's) and then feeding the 480p to the 006 and letting the 006 scale it. to1080p. Things like this are discussed in the processor forum. You might want to do some research there. I hope all are enjoying their 006's. It is one super set. Excuse me now, I've gotta go piss in the wind hoping it hits a certain member of this thread on my ignore list. He is still the only one there.

Sony is NOT going to Stop. This is a 10K TV, relax. If your lamp dims before YOU

Isn't odd that a company wants you to be happy, and doesn't nickel and dime you?

Thanks for the advice but, if you followed this thread regularly, I believe this advantage of an outside box doing the 480i> 480p thingee rather than the 006 performing that function has been alluded to just a couple of pages back or so with post # 8765 and others prior to that specifically mentioning the theoretical advantages of the Dragonfly with the 006.

A snippet from post # 8765 (by Penton-Man :p)...........
"I'm wondering if the Pio 59 avi would output 480P simultaneously thru component and HDMI (to take advantage of the 480i>480p thing done inside the Pioneer rather than inside the Qualia)"

Things like this are discussed on other previous pages of the 006 owner’s thread. You might want to do some research THERE.

Please do not read my post the wrong way. I wish the 006 would accept 1080p in because better processing will soon be available but it won't. I am talking the realta chip, the gennum chip, and a new one gatted chip that will be in the VP40 from DVDO. There may be a great advantage to using one of those to do the 490i to 480p conversion. Much better than the stuff presently available.

It still is one great set. The new Sony FP, the Ruby will accept 1080p in. So that is the baby for add on processors. My ignore guy accused me of pissing in the wind about a post of mine and me telling members here it was raining because I am an AV sales guy. A person who purchased his 006 from me, set him straight. Mark,

Admittedly I haven't followed any of the processing threads all that much, but I am a bit miffed. I thought one of the advantages of the Mosquito and Dragonfly was in cleaning up encoding artifacts, not just in deinterlacing. So, while in general I can definitely understand your statement about two processors being worse than one, wouldn't the 006 benefit from the Mosquito/Dragonfly combo, even on HD material where MPEG artifacts can/do exist?

mpsan,

When I called, they didn't ask. And since the bulb is "burnt out", you couldn't tell them even if they walked you through the service menu. I did offer that I watch the TV 16 hours a day and can't live without it. Maybe that is why they sent it next day. Just tell them the red light is flashing and the screen is dark.

Ben,

Allow me to respond as apparently Mark won’t be back until page 300 and I hesitate to leave you miffed until then. I think you may be mixing apples and oranges here.

The most thorough and professional evaluation that I have come across concerning the Algolith Mosquito can be found here……..
http://www.accucal.org/reviews/mosquito.pdf
which I listed a few pages back, something like p.292 ?

The most applicable part (to your query for HD material) is located in the last paragraph of the first page of umr’s excellent review, which I have asked him to comment or even speculate about in regards to the tiling/pixilation that brt and I sometimes see with HD material provided thru our cable companies.

Hey folks,
I was saving this post for my contribution to page 300; however, it appears like we’re going to get there alot sooner than I expected and given the fact that Penton Senior will definitely get his belly cut/scoped as soon as I can get his duo sponge-bath giving candy-strippers out of the room……. (which actually should only include about 3 more hospital days, at most)

AND, the fact that a recent visitor has a funny way of expressing the true Holiday spirit….(as if I need that crap around Christmas! )

the fire is now out. :(

So, if I’m not around for 300, here she be…………….

To commemorate Page 300 -
I think that we all are indeed fortunate that nearly one year since its debut to the public (or slightly less for some of us)……..we still have what many people *in-the-know* consider the *best* RPTV available !!!!!!!

Given the quickly changing technology associated with this hobby (that brt alluded to awhile back), I’m a little amazed that we all here are still ahead of the curve !

Whether it’s the Brillian or the new JVC 1080p’s (which FINALLY debuted recently), everybody seems to be comparing their displays to our 006’s as if we have THE gold standard. Even our friend Artwood (who still cracks me up with his posts on other threads :) ) routinely compares our 006’s as the only favorable competition to his vaunted CRT’s!

And to keep everything in perspective, an endorsement from whom I consider to be a true EXPERT in this field and professional enough to give an unbiased opinion on the matter…..

BTW, DD, I'm sure since you are a Jessica Alba fan that you've seen "Into the Blue" ??

Watching it now, OMG :D

[EDIT: Oh wait, it hasn't officially been released on DVD yet...12/26/05. Guess all I can say is definitely add it to your NetFlix queue!!]

For those of you waiting to see "Into the Blue" on your 006's, and the few lucky enough to have already seen it, here is a link to some info about the making of the movie. Part of the filming was done in 70 degree water without wetsuits . . . burr

The Mosquito deals with noise elimination and image sharpening. The Dragonfly is a deinterlacer/scaler using the Realta chip. You have your choice. You can not escape the 006's deinterlacer if you feed it 1080i and that s what you should do with a 1080i source, letthe 006's deinterlacer do ts thing. If you feed it some p, you can't escape the 006's scaler but you can escape its deinterlacer. So my suggestion is with 480i, use an external deinterlacer to get to 480p. Then you let the 006's scaler take it to 1080p. With a 720p source, feed it to the 006 and let its scaler do the rest. Things will be undoubtedly worse if you scale outside and then scale with a different scaler in the 006.

Hey folks,
I was saving this post for my contribution to page 300; however, it appears like we’re going to get there alot sooner than I expected and given the fact that Penton Senior will definitely get his belly cut/scoped as soon as I can get his duo sponge-bath giving candy-strippers out of the room……. (which actually should only include about 3 more hospital days, at most)P-M -- Best wishes and thoughts for your Dad. I think, as a leader of this thread, it must be painfully obvious to you that two things are essential to his successful recovery:

1.) Intensive Qualia Therapy, also referred to in the Medical Community as IQT. This has proven extremely beneficial in promoting quick healing in recently cut-open people (sorry if my techno-speak eludes the lay-people on this thread)...

2.) Extremely Intensive French Directional Therapy (or EIFDT), which has proven to -- in certain cases -- be even MORE beneficial than the aforementioned IQT.

Someone (SeanRiddle) on the SXRD thread posted (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6746771&&#post6746771) some navigation tips for the service menu on the 50" and 60" SXRD's. The poster also included information about writing user defaults to a memory stick, directly from the TV. Don't know if it's applicable to the Q006 or not -- plus the risk of entering service mode -- but it is interesting.

My ignore guy accused me of pissing in the wind about a post of mine and me telling members here it was raining because I am an AV sales guy.
Being not unusual at all (noted during my unfortunate bumping into your posts on other threads), you AGAIN have your facts incorrect, it was………
“Someone that is Pissing on Us but telling Us that’s its Raining”
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5422005&&#post5422005

Which you were and many here concurred with, in fact, our founder, jb007 placed YOU on HIS ignore list shortly following THAT past lunacy.

And you were not accused of “pissing in the wind about a post of mine and me telling members here it was raining because I am an AV sales guy.”
You were actually making a snide sarcastic comment about the lack of substantive content of “the guys” that post here (and not the first time, I might add)…………….

IRONICALLY, at that time, it was in regards to another Qualia 006 owner’s thread milestone that was about to come to fruition in about 2 pages, back then. I’m just wondering what little haughty comment you’ll make on page 298 – with two pages to go before our next milestone.

I am tired of repeatedly offering you olive branches and ……..

Well, it appears ONE person would have been more capable of keeping up and impressing us hobbyists with their “in the industry” know-how --if it had been that way….i.e. striving for 100 pages……rather than paying us a visit once in a blue moon possibly out of boredom ? (and I’m NOT referring to editor58).

Thanks, I sincerely hope all goes well in the future. If you need any help whatsoever, PM me as I think I’ll take a sabbatical from posting until it’s safe again to visit this thread……perhaps when that next new video processor hits the AVS forum threads ?

On the other hand, perhaps NOT ! :D
I’m itching to release more Blu-ray info, esp. titles – which I think as true movie connoisseurs is what’s of paramount importance to alot of us. :) Eyes just have to be careful and clear everything which takes time.

LOL, honestly it was a breeze this evening and they yanked that green sucker out without a problem.

The old-timer is already b*tching about when he can come home! Gotta love him. :)
And yes, I’m one of those people that would NEVER send his aging parent(s) to a nursing home – so, he comes back for more Qualia Therapy Time.

I suspect Wed. a.m. for discharge without question as the bugger doesn’t even have a significant post-op fever but, I defer all medical decisions to HIS doctor.

And for you, remember the best rehab for dem knees is swimming or bicycling (perhaps on a stationary in front of your 006 during a heated F1 race – where actually more than about 8 cars run! :D )

The successful surgery still doesn’t change my feelings about the recent Minacious Haughty cloud that has blown over our little neighborhood soooooooooo,

pawrampe,

I too replaced my bulb this morning, even though it was still working (2844 hours), but not like a new one. I wanted to make sure the 006 is primed for "Into The Blue" (I want to make sure Jessica Alba looks her best). The 006 looks brighter and more 3D like, so that is good.

I looked around in the compartment with a flashlight and didn't see any dirt. But I used the little brush on the vacuum to sweep it out anyway. I did notice that about 1/6 of the bottom of the actual bulb was sort of fogged over.

As far as cleaning the glass inside the compartment, you might give Sony a call and see what they have to say. If you do, please let us know their opinion.

2844 is pretty good, haven't heard anyone else with a higher count. I still haven't had the time to check my numbers, though I am pretty sure it's not even close to yours. My anniversary is coming up in about a month and plan to change the bulb just before my Superbowl party. I still plan to keep the old bulb just in case of emergency because it still produces a great picture.

I can't recall, does the screen displaying the number of hours on the lamp have a reset selection to reset the number of hours? if so, is there another counter that counts the number of hours the tv has been in use?

I have never actually tried it yet, but I do recall somebody saying that there is no reset option, nor is there a separate counter, so you would need to log that number to keep track of the new bulb.

But you did see the glass on the left of the compartment, right? When I flashed the flashlight on that glass it looked like it could use a good cleaning with Rubbing Alchohol on a 100% cotton cloth, but I did not have the stones to do it. If I have to remove this bulb again, then I'm going for it.

I have had issues with the one that is now in there. Sometimes it takes 2 min to warm up, and last time it gave me the 5-red flashes. I took the bulb out again, reset it in there, and the last two times the set started up in 15 seconds.

I too replaced my bulb before it died, but the picture was sooooooo dark that I had no choice. Thought I was snow blind as I was outside prior, but it turns out I did not lose my mind...

BenDover,
On brt3's site, there is a section on diagnostics with the following instructions (after you get into the SM and to the lamp hours screen):

To reset lamp time:
Press “3”, “MUTE”, and “ENTER” keys in sequence.
WRI-EXE (Red Character) is momentarily displayed
and LampTM will be reset to “0”.
4. Press “1” key [7 times].
PANEL NVM OK 9 OPTION_E
7 SH SFT1 10 Diff 1
PanelTM 14h
The screen above reads:
“Total Panel time is 14 hours”
NOTE: you can’t reset the Panel time with the Service menu.

I tried it, but the hours didn't change. It said it wrote and I didn't have the acorns to try it again.

Alonso in shock move to McLaren

McLaren has shocked the world of Formula One by announcing that World Champion Fernando Alonso will be driving for the team from the start of the 2007 season.

Alonso's decision to sign for the Woking-based team means that either Kimi Raikkonen or Juan Pablo Montoya will be moving aside to make way for the Spanish star - which is likely to have a considerable knock-on effect throughout the rest of the drivers market.

It will also be interesting to see what effect the announcement has on Alonso's motivation during the 2006 season - when he will still be driving for the Renault team. Juan-Pablo Montoya suffered from a relatively disappointing season in 2004 after it was announced that he would be leaving Williams for McLaren.

"It's great that our strong belief in the strength and competitiveness of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes package has been further endorsed by the World Champion," said Ron Dennis, Team Principal of McLaren. "We always make it clear that we want to be the best and the only way of achieving this objective is by attracting the best people, the best drivers and the best sponsors. To be able to announce Vodafone as only McLaren's third title partner in more than 30 years and Fernando's employment within only a few days is fantastic news for the team, our partners, Formula One and the fans."

"We are in discussions with our current drivers' Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya regarding the 2007 season", continued Dennis - confirming that one of them is likely to be forced out by the decision. "Both Juan Pablo and Kimi are extremely talented, professional and competitive Formula One drivers and they have and will continue to concentrate on our joint challenge for the Championships."

"Fernando and McLaren Mercedes wanted to make the announcement as soon as possible in a controlled and professional manner to allow McLaren Mercedes, Fernando, Kimi and Juan Pablo to focus on the preparations for the 2006 season," states Ron Dennis. "Our aim for next year remains absolutely clear to everybody within the team – we want to win races and be in a position where we might have two Formula One World Champions driving for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes in 2007."

"We are pleased to welcome Fernando to the team and look forward to working both with him and our new title sponsor in 2007," said Norbert Haug, Vice-President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. "To have a World Champion joining the team is a great endorsement and will create a tremendous amount of excitement. However for now our focus must remain on the 2006 season where we want to go one better than we did in 2005."

Speaking about the move, 2005 Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso commented "To become part of a team with such a desire to succeed and passion for performance is a dream come true for any Formula One driver. I am very excited about 2007 and the fantastic opportunity to drive for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. It will be a new beginning for me and a tremendous challenge and from what I have heard about this exciting new Partnership there is something to look forward to. Obviously I will be sad to leave Renault but sometimes possibilities come along which are just too good to miss. I'm pleased that we are able to make this announcement already now as it will allow my current team and I to focus 100 per cent on defending the World Championships next year." :D

Rumor has started that it is in fact Sir Kimi who may have that Ferrari seat!! My bet is that Michael will have something to do with managing the team and his pick would be Kimi not his nemesis Montoya.

I am planning a LA/Portland/Seattle trip right now. I would need four people to make the Bay Area a reality. It would be the week of January 16th if it happened.Interesting... Kaduku, you start on your side of the Bay and I'll work my side. This would be fantastic as UMR has so much experience with our sets. As I type this the D200 box is calling me, luring me to come closer and open it. Hmmm... instant gratification or a quick 20% profit on eBay??? Tune in next week for the exciting sequel to, "As The Gadget Turns"...

UMR (oomer?) -- if we can't pull this together for January, when is the next time you might make a Cah-lee-fohn-yah swing? Though I would love to shoot for January, I live in a hazy netherworld of vaporware and product delays named "ALGOLITH". Seriously, I'd love to know your thoughts on the Mosquito/HDMI + Dragonfly combo, and whether they may actually be worth waiting... and waiting... and waiting for. PM me with your thoughts on this if you don't mind. Obviously, I'd love to have my entire system together before a calibration; right now Jason is telling me early January, but many previous ship dates have come and gone (not Jason's fault)...

I checked eBay last night and didn't realized the demand for this camera. I should have bought a few and re-sell like what I did with the XBOX 360. At least my 18-200 is coming, I predict a long waiting list for this one too (depending on reviews).

First off! Great news about your health DD.

i have time to look at the forum today as I am doing a low level format of a 1/2 terabyte raid 0 array!

We had a polaris and it seemed to not be doing the job either. We got a new one and was amazed at how well it cleaned. I guess a lot can wear on them, like the tail rings, etc. You may want to ask the pool store what they think.

The Polaris 380 is about 7 years old and has been rebuilt and repaired several times. The pool company thinks it is time to replace it and I agree. My pool has a lot of odd corners and the polaris tends to spend most of it's time in a couple of areas until the backup device pulls it away. I will likely get it rebuilt and use it part of the time. I like the brushes on the robotic cleaners and think they will really scrub the walls.

Yup, we kept rebuilding ours as well. Also a "designer" pool. :D

We found that when we bought a new one it showed that there was just so much rebuilding you could do. Still, looking at another method is a good idea.

P.S. Ours never did have the backup feature.

Tough call. I doubt I would spend my money on this product, especially at this point in time. According to what Mark Haflich has posted, even when they finally do ship, you will be dealing with "growing pains" and at this price point and relatively long delay, not something I would be too fond of dealing with.

Hey Zechman,

Can you provide any further information re 1080p through the Q's firewire port? Or at least a link to where you initially discussed it :o

Asked and answered--your Official Historian, at your service.

For those who don't know what Ben is asking about, the Qualia 006, according to some testing I've done (and according to the capabilities it reports on the i.Link bus) is capable of accepting 1080p input in one specific circumstance: pre-encoded MPEG2 transport streams via the i.Link port.

The only thing I have to add at this point is that it's pretty clear that neither the DVHS deck nor the Qualia itself are very fond of Variable Bit Rate MPEG transport streams. And, of course, all of my DirecTV-sourced material (i.e. HDNet, HBO HD) is VBR!

Anyone know of a tool for inserting null packets into a transport stream, and/or converting from VBR to standard ATSC CBR @ 19.2 Mbps?

PM,

Here is my take on the Algolith products with a Qualia. I had an analog Mosquito in my home for an extended time period.

Observations - I saw no improvement in HD artifacts with the Mosquito without severe impact on resolution. The only feature I liked was 3DNR, but it was only useful for SD. I did not like any of the other features. MPEG4 is likely to reduce the effect of many of the MPEG specific noise reduction techniques. The Qualia will not generally accept a 1080p input. The Qualia 006 deinterlacer/scaler is generally very good.

Flea - This looks like a great product for improving SD content using 3DNR.

Mosquito Analog - I see no point in this with the Flea available for SD. It also reduces the resolution of all input types.

Mosquito HDMI - I see no benefit of this device over the Flea for SD. Remember the Qualia is very poor for 480i/p on its HDMI input as well.

Dragon Fly - I see little benefit to this device for HD since the Qualia will still be processing the signal. For SD content this might be a little better than the Flea because it will scale the input to 1080i.

None - One option I would strongly consider (I switched to Dish) to the Algolith product line is improving the source quality. DirectTV and Dish generally have better quality than local cable. However, this is not always the case.

i would imagine that you would want the new bulb in there for the calibration since it likely doesn't have much life left and you wouldn't want to calibrate it based on a bulb that isn't shining as brightly as the replacment bulb that you will likely have to install soon

I would say that is a reasonable plan. The lamp will effect colors over time, but the differences are not normally huge except at the very beginning and end. Different lamps can also perform differently. I have not seen any extensive study on the variability of color from a given lamp design over time.

So, do I (replace) or don't I?

My Q006 will be just over one year old when it is calibrated. I have never replaced the original bulb, but it doesn't appear to be tapering off. It seems plenty bright to me (on pro mode, not vivid :))

jb007,
It might not hurt to check the hour count just to see where you are. My bulb was looking good until a couple of days before I replaced it. Things started to look darker, and replacing my bulb made a big difference. Back to looking just like new with lots of the 3D factor. If you have 2000 - 2500 hours, you might want to replace it prior to ISF and keep the old bulb for a spare. Just a suggestion :)

And we all want to know how many hours the #1 006 has :D

I can't wait for the high definition dvd content to finally arrive. I am so tired of the compression irregularities of time warner cable. We all know the promise of the Qualia but the content is simply not yet there. I know if they could find me reliable enough 1080P content I would definitely buy myself a darn mac just for the i-link as a media server. Lets hope the new year brings lots of cheer (and maybe a sanctioned 1080p input mod from Sony!). Thank you again for all the advice you guys are making me a bit bulb paranoid though. I have been using the reduced power setting for the bulb. Other than longer life is there any other benefit? It seems to me the picture is still great at the reduced power level. I admit my room is not brite and that may help. What setting do most of you use and am I missing something here?

I have not been using the reduced power setting, only the enhanced black setting (forget exactly what it is called) that dials down the iris.

I have been wondering whether buring the UHP lamp at reduced power actually increases its life, does nothing, or makes it worse...these are strange beasts these UHP lamps.

I'm sorry, I forgot to respond...my wife accuses me of that all the time :)

At 1080i, the fonts and the desktop are perfectly legible to me at my normal viewing distance of about 10-11 ft. I don't do much surfing or typing, other than to navigate around, find pictures, music and/or video I wish to play/display. I haven't had time to fire up any games, but my son has been pestering me; hopefully, during my week off between Christmas and New Year's I will be able to play around a bit, but chances are my wife has a Hone-do list just waiting for me :o

Thanks. Any problems with overscan and not being able to see the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen or the minimize, maximize, close "x"'s at the top of windows?

yes, there is overscan...i either leave it or if it really bothers me i set up a custom resolution that reduces it by a handful of pixels.

Although I am frequently given credit as the founder of this thread (which is true), and the first person on record to take delivery of a Q006 (in the USA, which is true, 1//7/05), I confess now to being a mere rookie in comparison to most of you.

Let me explain. First, the caveats: I'm single, live alone and travel frequently.

There were posts on this thread that I may want to replace my bulb (it is the original) before umr does the one-year anniversary calibration on 1/10/06. There was a suggestion that I should at least check the lamp hours.

Well, guess what, I did, and I'm not worthy. Your humble founder has logged less than 1,000 hours of viewing on the Q006. 896 to be exact. I apologize for being a fraud. Tis the season. Please forgive me.

So you definitely don't want to change the bulb. Let UMR calibrate it with your current bulb. You will always be #1 in my book as you were the first to pull the trigger on a great set. By the way, I think we are getting close to page 300, so if you respond a couple of times you'll probably get the top spot, which would be appropriate.

JB, I hope you have a handful of topics to talk about, even if it's not concerning the Q, anything will do, like how's the family, new hobbies, sex life, etc. :D

I humbly accept the honor of being the first to receive the Q006, and subsequently the honor from some of you, to begin this thread, which has been informative, entertaining and a joy to read for the most part, when time permits (are you listening State Bar of CA? :D)

However, the real recognition should go to people like kaduku, dive dude, Zechman, BenDover, brt3, mpsan, Joel, nhey, and all the rest of you that make this thread such a delight. But, perhaps, more than anyone else, the backbone of this thread -- Penton-Man, whose patience, expertise, insight and humor keep this thread alive. Here's to you Penton-Man! A reprint of his post commemorating the milestone of Page 300:

Hey folks,
I was saving this post for my contribution to page 300; however, it appears like we’re going to get there alot sooner than I expected and given the fact that Penton Senior will definitely get his belly cut/scoped as soon as I can get his duo sponge-bath giving candy-strippers out of the room…….

And to keep everything in perspective, an endorsement from whom I consider to be a true EXPERT in this field and professional enough to give an unbiased opinion on the matter…..

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6568264&&#post6568264

So, kudos to all that didn’t procrastinate about what coulda, shoulda, or woulda be available in the future from Sony or any other manufacturer but “took the plunge” and bought one of these 006’s---because any perceivable premium price that may have been paid has easily been compensated for (as jb007, alluded to in a prior post) by countless hours of unfettered enjoyment.

I think we sure got lucky here. :)

Lol - Minidive definitely has been able to make the wait and the uncertainty much easier. I am sorry all of you algolith people have had such a hard time of it. I had really wanted to hear how those puppies were working out by now. Ah well guess the next great wait is for either those or the hd players... I think its a toss up on which will hit first. They certainly are taking their time with both of them. Thanks again for all the great laughs, chuckles, and groans I have gotten with all of you. I keep on hoping that we will get some better input devices soon! I just know that the Qualia is being held back hugely. After viewing some pictures on the Qualia I was amazed and highly recommend it. I use the computer hookup method myself but its nice to see such good instructions if I ever go stick. I hope i-link will get to be a more prevalent option for hookups.

The latest wisdom is that i-link>component>hdmi for hookups correct? I know I am using the old zenith DVB 318 with 1080i over component (I can just hear the movie studios screaming) dvd player instead of the 975 as the picture seemed as good but the sound was leaps above the sony (and the autoplay feature helps me skip all that crap and go straight to the movie).

I already saw the posting and the 59 is looking mighty good to me at this time.
Seems like Kris is a tease like me……. guess what Sony is working on for our 006’s ? ? ? :)

Don’t know if it will happen in the end but, at least thank God they’re actually taking it seriously now and WORKING on it. Then who says we won’t be future-proof ?

Seems like somebody ;) reminded them of the MSRP of the 70” JVC’s that are just getting into people’s hands, and they want to keep the Qualia a step above.

Want to go on record.
The Qualia people are just great.
I called to get a new bulb just in case, with the many holidays ahead
and the NFL playoffs coming. I called at 2PM and the bulb was
here at noon the next day.

The Qualia person also walked me thru getting into the service menu for
the bulb hours and how to reset the clock time to zero hours.

My bulb has 1650 hours.

The picture looks as bright today as it did when new.
I have been using the reduced power setting throughout most of
my viewing use as I do not need the additional intensity.
When UMR did his magic to my 006 it was on the reduced power setting.

Stew, if you can recall the exact steps you should post them for us as apparently that is a Sony sanctioned method to determine bulb hours and reset the clock....so if anything goes wrong in the process, people can always plead that they just followed Sony protocol.

Question (since we're talking Movie Trivia for $500):

Just watched "Lawrence Of Arabia" in HD/OnDemand via Comcast. Does anyone know what the source or master for this version is? Some scenes looked brilliant, while others are in distinct need of restoration. Anyway, my point is that I'm hoping & praying that the "LOA" that reaches BluRay will be from a new, digitally-restored, virginally pure master -- otherwise what's the point?

QUALIANS W/MEMORY STICKS: Here's a very cool trick for your 006 while you are entertaining friends and families over the holidays! Take the two images that I linked to below, and put them in a folder together (with no other images) on your memory stick. Put it in your 006, set the Slideshow to "Repeat: On" and "Transition: Fade", and enjoy the "Merry Christmas" scene complete with falling snowflakes! It looks like an animation, and the colors are beautiful on our screens! I just made these for our own Christmas parties this season, and you are all free to use them as well. If you do, let me know - I hope you all enjoy them as much as we do! :)

Does the SXRD use the exact same technology as the Qualia. Or are the SXRDs a hybrid improvement over Qualia?Quick & Dirty Answer: Qualia 006 vs. Sony XBR/SXRD = same technology in different implementations. Q006 has better optics, electronics, and screen. XBR has smaller SXRD chips, variable iris, and a (generally) less happy usergroup...

PM,

Yes it was about the historic rescue mission at the Cabanatuan Prison Camp by a newly formed Ranger unit. It was not in Widescreen, but it didn't matter as the story was so good. You and your family would be especially interested in the movie. The leader of the Filipino fighters was Capt. Juan Pajota, any relation?

I remember him telling me something about it. He certainly wasn't a captain as I believe he was only about 18 years old at the time.

Neat thing is, he's coming to visit us over the holidays, so it should be a treat to watch it together, if it doesn't bring back bad memories, I'll have to check on that first before I do a bad-ie.

And yes, to any inquiring minds out there, my wife has taught me enough Tagalog, that I can even ask for directions in that language too ! :D
