One last thing; Merry Christmas & Happy QualiaDaze to all!

Anything special coming on in HD over the next few days? Looking forward to catching a few great flix and REALLY need a good comedy, so I'm looking forward to catching "The Producers" with Mrs. T and Mini-Tee. Elmo loves Mel Brooks, but it's awfully hard to sneak him into the average cinema...

brt3,
"Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" followed by "Johnson Family Vacation" are on HBO HD tomorrow night. Far from a comedy, but "The Silence of the Lambs" is on HDNM tonight.

Here is a stat to figure out - how many kids have asked Santa for a 006 :D

Depends on how well you think Anthony Hopkins can imitate a chipmunk during the Chianti spiel. ;)

QUALIANS W/MEMORY STICKS: Here's a very cool trick for your 006 while you are entertaining friends and families over the holidays! Take the two images that I linked to below, and put them in a folder together (with no other images) on your memory stick. Put it in your 006, set the Slideshow to "Repeat: On" and "Transition: Fade", and enjoy the "Merry Christmas" scene complete with falling snowflakes! It looks like an animation, and the colors are beautiful on our screens! I just made these for our own Christmas parties this season, and you are all free to use them as well. If you do, let me know - I hope you all enjoy them as much as we do! :)

Christmas Image #1 (http://gtplanet.net/misc/christmas2.jpg)
Christmas Image #2 (http://gtplanet.net/misc/christmas3.jpg)

Now I thought when I clicked on the images I would see the traditional Christmas fire :( :)

Very nice though, should impress all your visitors.

Have some nice avi files on my pc, some in HD. How do I view them on the 006. Computer is not in same room as Qualia but there is an ethernet outlet at the Qualia.

You are either going to have to pipe the output from your PC to the Q via the traditional DVI/HDMI/component, or get yourself a DVD player that will play the avi file (I have the Oppo 971H for playing divx/xvid encoded material); I also have an HTPC connected to the Q but since getting the Oppo haven't really used it all that much...easier to burn the files to dvd and pop them into the Oppo.

A fire is a good idea - you could use the same fades to create a cool looking flicker!

Stew, if you can recall the exact steps you should post them for us as apparently that is a Sony sanctioned method to determine bulb hours and reset the clock....so if anything goes wrong in the process, people can always plead that they just followed Sony protocol.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all the rest.............

Yes, it puts out unbelievable picture quality at such a low price...has a few minor issues, but at the price, it suits its purpose. There are a couple of threads on the Oppos, the Brain Dump/FAQ thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=491306&page=1&pp=30) is very informative.

[EDIT: BTW, I guess I should mention that my main DVD player is the Denon 3910; I have only occasionally played commercial DVDs on the Oppo...in the very beginning and now only sometimes for the kids' DVDs :) ]

Official Sony Protocol for accessing the Number of Lamp Timer Hours

The Qualia 006 is in the OFF mode
Using the Qualia remote control
Press Display once
Press the Number 5 once
Press Volume Up once
Press Power
Press Jump Three times
(Be careful here because this can get you into the service menu and in trouble)

The Qualia will power up and display DIM SER in the center of the screen
Then press the Number 2 twelve times
Lamp Timer should appear below DIM SER with the
number of hours following it to the right
Turn the Qualia off to exit

Official Sony Protocol for resetting the Lamp Timer

Continue From the above
Press the Number 1
The menu display should now be at Lamp Timer Reset
Push the Number 3
Press Mute
Press Enter
The menu should display Write - EX in red at the top
Turn the Qualia off to exit
If at any time you feel you are in trouble or where you should not be
Turn the Qualia OFF
If you need assistance call the Qualia 800 number in the manual.
The Sony Qualia people are happy to assist or walk you through the procedure.

OMG...just after celebrating my 500th post on the 300th page...accepting congratulations from all of you...getting ready for the holiday weekend...and getting excited for the umr calibration in two weeks...

I suffer my first ever issue with my beloved Q006 :o

I was watching this afternoon and all was fine. This evening I power it on and the green power light just keeps flashing...there is no picture, but the bulb has warmed up because I do see black (lit). There is audio through my component system. I try to switch to DVD...still no picture. OMG.

I power down and wait a few minutes. Same thing. However, after several minutes (abnormally long), I do get a picture, bright and clear. However, the Video 6 label stays at the top left of the screen. ??? I try hitting display, and it gives me more info (time, etc.), that disappears, but the Video 6 label stays ???

I try switching inputs. Video 7 comes up, but the source from Video 6 stays on the screen (satellite). I cycle through all my video inputs and the labels change, but the source (satellite) stays the same. ???

Probably unrelated, but I did enter the service menu yesterday to check the hours. Followed all directions and the Q006 worked fine last night, then again today. I also viewed the memory stick pictures of Merry Christmas, posted above. No issues after that as well.

Looks like a service call may be needed :o

JB, sorry to hear the disturbing news.

Electronics can sometimes, unexplainably, and in no predictable manner (i.e., the hardware and/or software designers will swear that what is happening can't happen ;) )...in those cases, I like to pull the plug for a bit, removing all power. Give that a shot and see if it doesn't "reset"

Alternatively, maybe brt can look through the service manual and see if there is some way to restore the TV to factory settings/defaults.

Unplugging the set is a good idea if the lamp is cool. Resetting to factory settings is generally a horrible idea. This can frequently make a huge mess of things with a Sony set. I doubt it is a service mode problem.

I was presuming that he hasn't had any calibrations done and that resetting to factory defaults, even if possible, would only bring him back to his out of the box state, which presumably isn't too far away from where he is at now. But of course, I defer to umr's expertise :)

That is not the way Sony sets typically work when resetting to factory defaults. It may not be what your set was delivered with. Using this option in the SM can result in some serious work to restore the picture to a reasonable level of quality. I have had to do this a few times for customers and it is a real pain. I never use this function because the results can be so bad.

JB... I had a very similar problem with my Sony GWIII (OSD screwy, lamp on, no pic, audio didn't switch with inputs, volume + - stopped working....) Did it over the course of a day.. finally unplugged for about an hour, and the problem never came back. Maybe the ghost of GWIII problems coming to pass upon the Q :)

I initially removed "The Great Raid" from my que on Netflix, because of so many releases for this week and I can only rent 3 at a time, but after reading your recommendations, I decided to add it back again. Sounds very interesting, I too have filipino ties.

jb007,

I really feel bad for you and apologize if my suggestion to check the lamp hours caused your problem.

Have you gone into the regular menu and told it to skip the Video 6 label, just to see if that makes it go away. (menu - setup - Label Video Inputs - Program)

You know what guys! I don't think it is necessary for me to check my hours. It would really make no difference to me. My plan all along was to change my bulb every year anyway. You can call me CHICKEN all you want! hehehe :D

As suggested by FilmMixer and BenDover, the gremlin is now gone. When I fired it up a third time last night, it worked correctly :D .

My next step would have been to unplug the power, but that hasn't become necessary. It's working today normally as well :D .

I don't believe it had anything to do with accessing the service menu. That was just a coincidence. I followed the directions very carefully (brt3, is there a way to update your .pdf to reflect pressing "2" 12 times, not 9?) Besides, when I ordered the *replacement* bulb from Qualia, they sent me an email requesting the hours on the bulb. So, I'm not concerned about any warranty issues.

Bottom line is, everything is working normally again, watching the Chargers in HD.

Happy Holidays all, and thanks for your input and support!

Hey Qualians -- anyone looking for a smaller flat panel set should check out Sony's 26" Bravia XBR. (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=KDLV26XBR1&Dept=tvvideo&CategoryName=tv_hdtv_flatpanel_26%22to42%22) I just bought one of these to use in a workout area, and it's a GREAT little set! Very nice picture, good features, and a very stylish design to boot.

Here's something I find interesting; perhaps someone here can help me figure this out. In our house we run two Comcast/Moto 6412 DVR boxes. Now, I plugged the new Bravia into an existing cable outlet, turned it on, and let it auto-program the channel memory. When I came back to the set I was stunned; it had something like 200+ channels that it found! Although it is NOT fitted with a CableCard or run off of a box, it is receiving almost triple the number of channels than the Samsung it replaced. It gets all the networks + PBS in HD, and picks up all the multicast network digital channels. Also gets all the HBO & Showtime stuff, though not in HD, along with all the MusicPlus channels. I assume this should not be the case, but do not plan on filing a complaint with Comcast...

Merry Christmas everyone and many blessings for the New Year !!

One of my friends informed me today that Hanukkah actually also begins tonight – which he said was the first time it has done so (on Dec. 25) for something like decades !

Now, if we can just get that Kwanzaa to start on Dec. 25……………..then when we proclaim Happy Holidays, it won’t just be politically correct, it will actually be accurate.

I know one thing, it sure is great not to work on Christmas day because I worked too many of em in the past or got called in during the most inopportune times…..like carving the turkey. :(

So, I’ll raise a glass and offer a toast tonight to all Qualians and everyone around the table will look at me like I converted to paganism until I go into a lengthy discussion of one fine TV and a great group of comrades . :)

PM,

A very Merry Christmas to you :) I also know the joys of being on-call 7x24 and working the holidays, including Christmas. I have been an IT manager for 25 1/2 years. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to be put in a position where I am not on-call, I just set standards and bring in new technology now. So I will raise a toast to not being on-call :D

And as you explain the joys of being a Qualian tonight, you can tell them that it sure helps someone with cancer get through the ordeal :) :)

DD you bring back memories. In the days when Main Frame systems were installed in rooms bigger than a Qualians house, I used to work especially during Holidays. I was on call, of course, and at one time worked something like 45 days in a row.

I did not meet my goal though. We got Double Time for Sundays and I wanted 24 hours of Double Time and only got 20 hours. I even got called into The World Trade Center...but that was many years ago when we lived on the East Coast (where my wife and I are from).

Any recommendations for a DVD player if I own the Qualia 06? I am not looking to spend a large amount of money because I will buy a Blueray player - something to tide me over till then.

punkzip,
Some of us on this thread have purchased the Sony DVP-NS975V for that reason. I have had very good luck with mine. I believe it has been replaced by the DVP-NS90V. And Sony also has the DVP-NS70H for less money. I can not tell you how well they work, just that the 975 works fine. Other on this thread may have some other alternative suggestions.

I had the Sony DVP-NS975V but found it unreliable. I upgraded to the Pioneer Elite DV59AVi, which has been a much better player for me. You might find a good deal on the 59, as Pioneer recently introduced the DV79AVi to replace it...

Regarding the term "Happy Holidays"; technically, the word "holiday" is derived from Holy Day. Therefore, the term "Happy Holidays" is -- by definition -- religious, and is clearly not politically correct!

I thereby wish everyone on this thread a very merry Christmas, hope that you have a superb whatever-you-celebrate, and also suggest you have an excellent new year...

For any of you planning on getting the new DirecTV KA/KU Dish and the corresponding H20 MPEG4 HD Receiver there are several threads on AVS discussing various aspects. However, you can learn a lot by watching the DirecTV Installation Training Video for the KA/KU Dish on channel 592. Even though DirecTV is doing all the installations, the video will give you a good look at the new larger dish (with 5 LNB's), and special installation considerations.

The rollout is by region and will provide the major local channels in HD. HD content for many of the satellite channels will be provided in the future. A compliant replacement for the HR10-250 has not been released, but will be coming in the future.

Hi DD! I hope you are feeling better and restrained from too much holiday nog.

I've been a little lazy in my reading of other threads. Do you (or anyone else) know if the new D* HD DVR will allow (at extra charge) continued access to the Tivo service? I think Tivo combined with the 006 will be tough to beat. My 5 year old can work through the menus and operations like a champ!

I am just short of my 1 year anniversary and I don't know if I am just seeing things (remember I am in my early forties and my eyesight is beginning to deteriorate), but I am starting to notice the brightness dimming. I decided to check my lamp hours prior to replacing the bulb, and found out that I only have 1,258 hours. I held off replacing the bulb thinking it's much to early. Has anyone out there replaced their bulb based on the brightness and with a similar low count. Should I go ahead and replace it even with this low count?

I think many Qualians are above 2000 hours and not noticing any deterioration. UMR told me and others he is seeing the bulbs lasting 3000 hours.
You can expect different results depending on voltage surges and spikes and how often you turn the set on and off etc. Also I would imagine using the reduced power setting would prolong the life of the bulb.
If you have a replacement change it and let us know if you observe much of a difference. If there is not a noticeable difference don't reset the bulb timer and put the old bulb back in.

I decided to change my first bulb a couple months ago at 1585 hours because the brightness seemed to be waning . You won't believe how really bright a new bulb is for the first 50 or so hours, but it then levels off to a very nice level.

It's really your preference for a bright picture, and willingness to spend for new bulbs. If you sometimes prefer the VIVID mode or COOL color temp (and there is no sin in that no matter what anyone else tells you since it's your set to watch it in whatever way you want) then you will likely prefer a brighter bulb.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I've have the Q on standard mode for TV and DVD viewing, and vivid for the XBOX 360. I will not use Pro mode until it has been calibrated (too dark). Definitely the brightness has dimmed slightly, but the picture is still awesome. I watched "The Phantom of the Opera" last night on HBO and it just looked great. I calculated (and I might be wrong), that I have so far averaged 3.5 hours a day, If I change my bulb now, by the time Superbowl comes around, the new bulb brightness would have leveled off already, so I will wait another two or three weeks. I really want to blow away my friends on Superbowl! :D

Guys,
I had 2844 hours on my bulb when I changed it. That works out to about 10.5 cents per hour. I also did a quick calculation and the electricity to run the 006 costs about 3 cents per hour. A small price to pay for all the enjoyment the 006 gives us. ;)

Let us know what someone who was actually involved in the raid thought of the depiction. And by all means, do not miss the footage during the ending credits. It is of the actual people, and I found it very interesting.

O.K.-
The Penton clan review……………………

It is a very good DVD, sort of like the old war movies but it didn’t have that Are-TEASE-tic graininess like Band of Brothers (which BTW we love in our household :) ) nor like that of the recently reviewed Cinderella Man (at least in the first third or what not).

So, for me that was actually a pleasant surprise. :)

In regards to my father-in-laws impressions, he wasn’t privy to the actual raid on the camp itself, because he was fighting at the bridge.

He thought that the director could have emphasized a little bit more about how difficult it was just to maneuver behind enemy lines to get to the prison camp but, there were probably time constraints with the length of the film.

He thought that they really gave a soft touch to the interrogation of one of the main characters in the movie (perhaps out of good taste or for ratings  ) because he was once hauled in and “interrogated” (translation = beaten up pretty badly) by the occupiers.

I guess we’ll never know if he was in the old newsreel footing at the end because when they flashed the graphics about how many Filipino guerrillas died during the campaign, his eyes swelled up and he had to leave the room as he was starting to weep. :(
Which I presume indicated that he lost at least one good friend at the bridge.

Today he mentioned to everyone that he was glad at least somebody remembered that mission and he was happy that, in the end, the Army did NOT leave any man behind despite the fact like the movie said, the mission had no real strategic significance.

(That was from an 18 year old fierce Filipino guerilla that went on to become an engineer, move his whole family to the U.S. and participate in design, etc. of such projects as Bangkok’s airport, a super-secret place for jets in Saudi Arabia and the D.C. subway system.)

Quite an accomplishment, I’d say.

What does Tom Brokaw call that generation ?

Have the Qualia 006 owners experienced any of the color problems being reported by owners of the Sony KDSR-50/60XBR1 SXRD sets? The following thread has many comments about color issues and I have not seen mention of these on this thread. The Qualia line, including all of the products in the family, are supposed to spare no expense when choosing components, etc. Therefore, in line with premium components being used in the Q006, the optics (lens design/assembly) is supposed to be superior; it is in the lens design that chromatic aberrations (CA) are corrected/compensated. My understanding is that CA is not specific to the SXRD technology but to any multicolored (e.g., white light) source passing through a lens. CA is addressed through lens design which includes, among other things, lens material(s) and lens design/geometry (number, shape, size, etc. of lens elements). Lastly, while many will go on and on about "shiny/reflective" screens, in the Q006, the shiny/reflective screen is part of the "optical engine" (not sure that it has anything to do with CA but more to do with uniform brightness across a very large screen, i.e., 70" ... it always seemed to me that jumping to 70" was a non-linear step in rear projection design).

My take on the *issues* in the GW SXRD owner's thread(s) is that, for the most part (I'm not closing the possibility of some defective units) there are those that will stare at a test pattern and those that will watch the TV and enjoy it :D

I addition, keep in mind that the Q/A performed on ……….oh, I’d say about the first 30 006’s that were sold to consumers was/is incomparable to that performed on the typical SXRD (non-Qualia) set. I think that several people that post here are among the first 30.

The Q/A performed on the first 10 units to hit the shores of the good ole U.S. of A was down right anal !

I would be surprised if the problem is due to CA in the Lenses. As you point out, it is easily addressed through lens design, and is certainly not new.

Regarding chromatic abberation, I'm sure there are lens compromises on the SXRD line ( not the Qualia) where they can't use a lens that's C/A free. It would run the price up too much. I suspect the trick is to get it good enough.

Does anyone know if the Sony DVP NS70H or NS90V will output 480i over HDMI (I understand this is the holy grail for DVD players mated to the Qualia correct)? I know that the NS975 will but I hear it is not too stable.

Yeah, what he said!

punkzip,
There was a fix made to the 975's early in the year. I purchased my unit in April and have not had one problem with it.

I'm out; just called Algolith and Jason and cancelled my order for the Dragonfly/Mosquito pair. Not really sure about that company; though they seem EXTREMELY nice they must use a great deal more insecticide up in Canada than down here in the States...

Good luck to Algolith, but I can't believe anyone can stay in business selling that kind of vaporware. They are -- obviously -- pretty dependent on their professional products, and I'm guessing the consumer products are something of a lark for them???

All I know is, they'll have to create a new line of processors endorsed by Jesus H. Christ himself for me to ever purchase anything from them!

I am wondering how my Video Ipod compares to the Qualia?

IPOD Pros:

1) I can carry it in my pocket.
2) I can easily download content.
3) 60 gig drive
4) Plays mp3s
5) Don't need to change the lamp.

Qualia Cons:

1) Too big to fit in my pocket.
2) Cost a tad more than my ipod.
3) The lamp is bigger than my ipod.
4) Doesn't come with cool ear buds.
5) Not available in white.

I should have started a new thread. I'm sure it would have gotten plenty of posts!

1) More than one person can watch it at once.

Correcto-mundo –

Problem is, they PLANT themselves (hello, Artwood! :D ) in front of the 006 and won’t leave without some gentle urging……..

Like –

“Hey, dude, this is the third time your boss/dispatcher has called here, and he’s asking what you’re doing and why haven’t you gotten to the next job yet?”

or

“Hey, dude, I’d like to have sex with my wife now and Mr. Happy can’t get Happy if there’s a stranger in the household.”

And if all else fails to get them away from the 006 and out of your house….

Take your Sig Sauer or Glock out from the case to clean it in the background where your rear surrounds are, and keep saying things like …….

“Oops !” …….while you make alot of noise with the slide.

17) The Qualia's FireWire interface is faster than the iPod's USB interface.
18) The Qualia's screen is much higher resolution.
19) There is MUCH more video content available for display on the Qualia.

and lest we not forget:

20) The Qualia can play any MP3 file that the iPod can (using the Memory Stick slot).

Hi Everybody,

I'm a proud new owner of a qualia 006. Does anyone know how to retract the base of the TV. I had a custom entertainment center built but when I placed it inside the base sticks out too far. The builder of the entertainment center says the base can retract but he isn't quite sure how to do it.

Thanks,

PaulA,

Welcome to Q006 ownership and the Q Community. I don't know anything about the Q006 base retracting. Maybe your builder was referring to the base being set and recessed into the Sony stand that is made for the Q006.

However, there are some other owners on this thread that have custom built stands and perhaps they can shed more light and answer your question.

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the welcome.

The builder has done this with a couple of 006 and he is not referring to the sony stand. He states that I need to place the tv on it's back (or front I guess would work) and that there are some springs underneath the base, but after that he does not recall the steps to retract the base. By retracing the base the TV will sit in the entertainment center flush against the wood frame that hides everything but the picture. As it is now, it sits back from the frame about 3 inches due to the base sticking out in front of the display and hitting the frame.

Paul A,

Congratulations, you are going to love the 006 :) Mini Dive says a 16 lb. sledge hammer should get it back far enough  , but I would suggest calling Sony and asking if they can give you instructions. I think this is the number - 1.877.QUALIA3.

Paul A

Thanks for the number. I called and Sony said dont even think about retracting the base as there would be a possiblity for the TV to tilt forward due to the shift in the weight distribution. I guess I'll take it up with the builder on what my options are going forward.

Thanks again,

Paul

That's what I thought they might say. I hope your builder left lots of ventilation in the back, sides and top. This baby puts out a lot of hot air.

BenDover,

"Into the Blue" was released on Monday. I just checked my copy from Netflix and it loads just fine. Maybe the guy that had a problem loading his copy might try cleaning his DVD player with a DVD lens cleaner. As you said this is a new DVD, but if I get a used DVD from Netflix, I always clean it. I have a DVD/CD cleaner kit, which includes some cleaning spray and a device that sponges off the surface of the DVD. I don't want my player contaminated.

I believe that the major issue being expressed by the owners of the 50 and 60 inch SXRD models is not CA, but color uniformity. Color uniformity manifests itself as color splotches and uneven colors across the screen. It appears that this problem is more prominent in low light settings. There are quotes on that forum from sources internal and external to SONY to the affect that this is a shortcoming common to all LCOS technologies. That is why those of us who are checking out the smaller sets are wondering if the expense of the 70" model is much more than premium optics and screen materials, but also due to SONY's rejecting a large portion of its chips for its flagship set, a measure that it would never be able to take for the less expensive models.

Interesting hypothesis. That could be the case. While the number of Q006 owners is small compared to the 50"/60" SXRD owners, color uniformity has not been an issue in this thread. I recall someone posting a long time ago that the chip yields were not that good and that was keeping manufacturing costs of the Q006 way up.

Penton Man has some pretty good contacts with Sony higher ups (I think he may have been the best man in Sir Howard's wedding because he's the only one I know of that received a free stand ;)), and he has posted information about the QA check (at least the initial) Qualias went through before devilvery to us.

I'm no engineer (obviously :D), so I have no idea if color uniformity is a shortcoming common to all LCOS technologies (remember when they used to tell us, or maybe they still do, that a few dead pixels was *normql* in any LCD display?!), but is there a way for Sony to check out the chips before installation into the TV set? I mean, I doubt Sony was firing up Q006's after they came off the assembly line and then rejecting all those with color uniformity issues.

I would say that for the last month's rental from Netflix, many movies I rented were disappointing, but a few surprises I'd like to mention. One was "Bad News Bears", Thorton doing a great job as the coach, and even though it was the same storyline like the original, still very entertaining, and it brought back memories of when I first watch it as a child with Walter Matthau and Tatum O'Neil, who I had a big crush on. I know I mentioned this already, but you guys really got to watch "Into The Blue". Alot of action, not a bad story, and the diving conditions were freakin perfect, and it all looked fantastic on the Q. I mean almost comparable to HD dive shows on the Disco Channel. I am so impressed that I am heading out to Best Buy and get the un-rated Jessica DVD version.

PM,
Sorry buddy. :o The underwater was filmed at Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas (http://www.dive-bahamas.com/) where they do shark feeds. Thus, they have lots of friendly sharks that come when they hear the sound of a boat motor. They also had a large tank where they could film during rough weather. They had 3 DC-8's, 2 sunk at sea and one in the tank. The Bahamas would be a nice place to go to work on a movie :)

Honestly unless you have felt this technology first hand ( butt ) you don't know what you are missing. It adds the 3rd dimension to the movie / music experience, and coupled with the 006, it is extraordinary :D .

Apparently, Blockbuster has this thing now where you don’t have to return the DVD “officially” for something like 6 ? days and “unofficially” for close to twice that long.

It appears that NOBODY is in a big rush to return the DVD.

Next BIG thing for us Qualians in perhaps 2008 ?

An SED display (hopefully 80”) from Toshiba.

Hell, I think they’ve already lost the Hi-Def DVD war to Blu-ray so, we might as well throw them a bone and buy one of dem SED displays in a couple of years.

Perhaps some Qualians will become Toshibans.

Anyway, CES is approaching rather quickly and Tony is apparently attending…. and he mentioned to me that he would check on status/timetable of the next big thing.

Surf's up, dudes! Man-oh-man, it is getting NASTY here; a lot of secondary roads are severely flooded. Scheduled to take the family to Cirque du Soleil, but their tents may not be there anymore (70+ mph winds). Very glad to not be living at my old place in the boonies; the genset would've kicked in a LONG time ago...

My wife and I saw it last month, my company had paid for it as part of our Christmas bonus. We did the Tapis Rouge VIP experience, which is very pricey, but very worth it. I was so impressed with the show that I bought tickets for my son and mother-in-law for the following weeks showing.

I hesitate to stick my toe into waters this deep, but here goes:

I have an 8 inch EM focus front projector (NEC XG). I use it for movies and rare HD events (e.g., Super Bowl). For "normal" viewing, my old Sony HS10 61 inch 4x3 rear projection CRT is on its last legs. To replace the Sony, I can buy an 006 for 10 grand from a friendly local dealer I've helped make wealthy over the years. He'd throw in a 4 year warranty for $400 (adds one year to Sony's, and includes bulbs). Don't know yet what he'd do for me on the stand.

Good purchase? Good price? Warranty worth it?

Yessss...a fellow HS10 owner. My 53HS10 was finally relegated to workout room duty and replaced with a 60" XBR SXRD. I can't help you with your Qualia quandry though...$10K for a TV is too rich for my blood.

The 006 is an excellent TV, you will not be sorry. That is a great price for the 006. They come with a 3 year warranty, so is the extended warranty for an additional 4 years? You can get one free bulb from Sony with the standard warranty. If the $400 add on warranty pays for all the bulbs you can use, that is a great deal.

Yes, 10 large for a TV is silly in most worlds, but my alternatives, really, are half that for a 60" SXRD, or somewhere in between for the JVC 70" Pro DILA. As a CRT guy, the only digital TVs for critical viewing I like are the LCOS ones.

The dealer got my attention with the 10 grand offer. My brain was able to ignore the Qualia at 13 grand, but 10 makes it more interesting...

The warranty does not add 4 years; it adds one to the existing 3 years, but it does include all bulbs during that time.

Thanks for the input. I'll chew it over. What makes it different for me, maybe, than most, is that I also have a fp CRT that shoots a very nice 92" 16 x9 image, so the Qualia may be more TV than I need. Of course, if "need" had much to do with it I wouldn't be here in the first place....;)

I have to say I was looking forward to seeing the other Sony SXRD sets, but so far I've not been impressed. They are not bad, but I have been badly spoiled by my Qualia. Spent New Year's eve at my next-door neighbor's, who bought the 60" Sony SXRD after I recommended it. It certainly is a good set -- and could be better if he'd let me dial it in -- but this truly is a case of "you get what you pay for"...

I know you didn't ask me, but having been there many times, sitting half way up or higher in turn 4, or after turn 4, gives you a great view of the whole track.
If you have never been there before they do a great job of crowd control especially leaving the track. Arrange to get there real early in the morning if you are driving. If you get there around 5:30AM you can park on a residential street within a city block of the track or park on someones front lawn for a fee. Otherwise you park in one of the grass fields nearby the track.

Stew--

I have no desire to get flamed by true believers here, but the image from a properly tuned 8" EM focus CRT projector, especially for movies, is easily the equal of the 006, to put it kindly, and on a larger screen.

That said, the 006 does make a very nice image, from what I've seen, for a rear projection set (especially in HD), and does pretty clearly beat its rear projection competition. Plus, it's easier to use than a CRT front projector, and a hellluva lot easier to set up. Plus, it's much better in situations in which the ambient light is pretty high, so you don't need to watch everything in the dark, as you should with a CRT front projector.

So, it's tempting. My only other hesitation is the old "waiting" issue--should I wait until it will take 1080p...

I have no desire to get flamed by true believers here, but the image from a properly tuned 8" EM focus CRT projector, especially for movies, is easily the equal of the 006, to put it kindly, and on a larger screen. You'll get no argument from me on that; it is very tough to match the performance of 8"/9" CRT projectors that are perfectly set up in a darkened room...

That said, the 006 does make a very nice image... Plus, it's easier to use than a CRT front projector, and a hellluva lot easier to set up. Plus, it's much better in situations in which the ambient light is pretty high, so you don't need to watch everything in the dark, as you should with a CRT front projector. This, for me, is the crux of the issue; the Q006 gives great performance in an easy to use package that functions beautifully in real-world (i.e., normal ambient lighting) situations. If I had a dedicated HT room I'd probably go with something like a G90/Qualia 004/Ruby FP setup, but that's a big project that's a few years down the road for me (lottery permitting)...

So, it's tempting. My only other hesitation is the old "waiting" issue--should I wait until it will take 1080p...I think there's a value to having something NOW that you can enjoy and use. Given the dearth of 1080P programming (I realize this will change) it may make sense to buy now; it may be a few years before you are limited by the lack of 1080P input. But, then again, there are miscellaneous rumblings suggesting that there may be an upgrade path for the Q006.

It seems you keep gear for awhile; if this is the case and you're not subject to Frequent Upgrade Syndrome, then perhaps you should wait until 1080P input capability is offered, or until the mysterious potential upgrade is confirmed...

Thinking of getting a Comcast cablecard (no cost) just to see how the HD picture quality compares to my Motorola set top box (just upgraded to the 3412 from the 6412).

That is funny, upgrading your cable box actually took you down in the model number designations (6412 ----> 3412)? That would throw my simple mind off a bit :D

I know editor58 was using the cablecard in addition to the cable box and I think he reported that in his opinion the cablecard gave a slightly better picture. There may be at least one other Q owner that uses a cablecard too (mpsan?). Essentially, it boils down to whether the cable box or the Q does a better job at decoding the bitstream. I've also read some posts by John Mason who measured the resolution from a Scientific Atlanta HD STB as being about 1335 lines - meaning resolution is reduced by the box so I'm thinking the cablecard would eliminate that issue. As you stated, the problem is that cablecards don't provide a user guide so I'd probably keep my Motorola 3412 and switch to the cablecard to view sport events or movies where I don't need the guide. The cablecard has no cost. I would have to split the signal between the set top box and the cablecard but I don't think that will degrade the picture for high def content.

Nope, I looked into the CC as all 3 of my HD sets can use them but I got the 6412's so I could record HD.

Plus, with cablecard you lose all the guide data; that is the only reason that I haven't gotten a cablecard, although I would love to tinker with one for a while :)

Perhaps they won't if the Sony unit has more capabilities.

Obviously Toshiba is running scared of Blu-Ray and they have a player out for under $500. Neither one will handle 1080p so it will be interesting to see what Sony, etc. come out with.

Provided the PS3 comes out within a few months of the traditional players I imagine I will give it a shot.

My feelings right now are that until the dust settles a bit more (and they have enough titles to justify it) I will not go out of my way to buy a next gen dvd player. Thus the PS3 fits the bill nicely as a sampler. If they start rolling out HUNDREDS of films rather than tens I might change my mind but for now they simply are not justifying their pricetag to me. I will own the PS3 even if they were to cancel the blu-ray player portion so its a zero cost trial.

Many, MANY people will, THAT and the fact that the other format has much fewer exclusive titles to offer the public (even over the long run) has essentially won zee war for the Blu-ray camp.

Ah, but read it carefully.................
The BDR-101A supports BD-R (Blu-ray Disc Recordable) and BD-RE (Blu-ray Disc Rewritable) Blu-ray discs with 25GB capacity.

Just wait a few more months for the ones that can handle 50GB ;) ; otherwise I think it's Penton paper not well spent.

PM,
I will, I am just happy to see a PC version. Not only is it half capacity, but too slow. I learned my lesson when I brought the Pioneer DVR-A03 burner that retailed for $1,000. I couldn't get it to work right no matter how many chicken bones I shook over the top of it. And just about everyone else had problems with it. But it did a fine job of making coasters. So I will wait until at least a second generation burner comes out or at least one with great press. ;)

I am wondering something.

If a b-ray player is going to cost more than $1000, how much of a bath is Sony going to take on the Playstation? Obviously they are not going to sell the PS for $1000 or higher, they have to be competitive with the $300-$400 price of the Xbox.

Great game. I had the pleasure of watching it at a stripjoint with lovely company at my side. Best damn game I ever had the pleasure of watching. Only problem was I kept getting distracting and missing key plays :D

Well it appears that the video game players will probably have cheap access to both formats. Microsoft jumped in by saying they will have a hd-dvd addon for the 360 this year. Talk about Microsoft versus Sony but at least I can watch anything I want as long as I have both systems (and the 360 addon).

Just a thought on the PS3 b-ray issue. Since they will be producing these b-ray players on an unprecedented level (for a next gen player) and they also own a large portion of the intellectual property of b-ray I would think they could seriously save on costs of manufacture as opposed to an $1800 dollar device that obviously will not be flying off the shelves. The PS3 is guaranteed sales in the millions immediately so all their R&D costs for design and manufacture can be divided by a much larger factor. In the end its those costs (and the costs of the facilities) that are making things high. The material cost should drop quickly as the scale of production increases past the "specialty" level and into mass level.

I can see it already. People will buy a PS3 simply because it's a whole lot cheaper than buying a dedicated player.

Truth be told, now that we are at the HD level, even the crappiest HD player (Bray or HD-DVD) is going to look spectacular compared to todays standard dvd players.

You will probably only begin to see difference in quality (whether it's the transfer or the player) at the very large screens. Probably 70 inchers and up.

by the way, that is a really good point. makes you wonder if Sony should figure out a way to use the same assembly lines to produce both products.

I will not use my XBOX 360 to view DVDs, and would rather have a dedicated Blu-Ray player, but you are right, about crappy YD players having great PQ. I will probably use the PS3 first until the players get cheaper or even more sophisticated.
