jp,
That would be great if your DirecTV box could be modified to allow a Firewire connection. But I wouldn't invest your money in the HD TiVo right now since they will soon need to be replaced with mpeg 4 units.
Somewhere on the AVS Forum I read that the FCC mandated that all HD cable STB's were required to have Firewire ports, but no reason was given. I'd love to know why that requirement. I guess the FCC doesn't have similar control of satellite providers, hence no incentive for Firewire for DirecTV.
When I was at the Sony Store in Las Vegas, the Qualia salesman told me that Sony will soon introduce a 500 gig HD DVR. I don't know what service providers their DVR will be compatible with, but given Sony's fondness for iLink, perhaps their box will be so equipped, but I doubt their reason for iLink would be to allow recording to a JVC DVHS machine. I'd like to pop the can open on my Comcast/Motorola 6412 DVR and replace the 120 gig hard drive with a 250 gig drive. But it may not be an easy proposition, and the drive would need to be formatted with whatever OS Motorola is using. One upside to the stock 120 gig drive in the Motorola - it's forcing me to watch the stuff I'm recording, delete it, and make the space available - or archive to DVHS. That's probably a good thing - discourages long term storage of shows that may be forgotten and never watched.

Suspect a 'P' output from any STB into a deinterlacing 006 input would cause a double image. Perhaps it's just variations in STB format setups, as well as what each model actually delivers with multiple formats selected. -- John

Penton et al- I am using HD-TIVO via HDMI on input 6 and have no problems with "double picture"
As for DTV/Cable debate, NFL sunday ticket was the only consideration for me. Have cable for internet only (and Vonage... I hate the phone company!).
SABAlove,
I bought a slick looking low profile Winegard Square Shooter thinking the old Winegard VHF/UHF antenna inside my attic would not work for digital ATSC broadcasts. The Square Shooter was well reviewed in one of the HT rags. Turns out my old antenna works just fine, no need for me to switch to the Square Shooter. So I've got a brand new unused Square Shooter which I will sell for a nice discount off any price you'll find. PM me if interested.
One big advantage to the Square Shooter: it's housed in an attractive plastic casing not unlike a satellite dish, so it's aesthecially pleasing. It can be piggybacked onto a satellite dish and has a variety of mounting methods. I'm in LA so we could make this happen easily if you are interested. Or shop online as I did for a nice discount off MSRP.

If you have time, try taping a few more movies from a couple of different channels; unless, of course you’ve already done that.
Penton,
I'll give it a shot. But for now I'm not subscribed to HBO HD or any premium channels. I'm having trouble finding time to watch all the good stuff on the basic Comcast package! The only time I had a DVHS recording failure was some 3rd rate movie on InHD. But I recorded a documentary off InHD to DVHS as a test and was fine. I'll look for some movies and run a few more tests and let you know.

As I soon as I pressed play, the double pix went away, and that was the last double pix I saw. I’m not sure that is entirely correct.
It’s my belief that amongst its arsenal of set top boxes, your cable company is required to supply a cable box with firewire to subscribers that ask for it……rather than the cable company has to have a firewire port on EVERY type of box they carry.
I may be mistaken but I think that is what was mandated.
Adelphia gets around this by providing a Motorola 6200 with firewire port (which I currently have) along with its DVR called the Moxi – which has no firewire port (which I’m also renting.)

Penton, I have a Scientific Atlanta cable box with a Firewire port. I can record every station including HBO, Showtime, etc. I hate to mention my cable companie's name lest they change this. The recordings are marked copy-once, or is it copy-never so, so that I cannot duplicate the tapes. The good news is that I can create them.
Maurice,
I assume the recordings you mention are to DVHS, not just the DVR? Where do you see a message stating "copy-once" or "copy-never?" Perhaps a momentary on-screen message when you start to play a DVHS tape recorded from the various content providers you mentioned?

Try calling d* and saying you are thinking about converting your living space to an business office and want to know what the business packages are. I think you can actually get just HD and Sunday ticket as a business. I was specking it out for our lobby at work and was surprised at the number of package choices I had as a business. It's all Ala art. try going to their website and going to http://www.directvsports.com/commercial/ and you'll see the packages. Hope this helps.

I'll do that next week. I've seen many of those films in IMAX theaters and they are breathtaking and fascinating. It will be interesting to see how that large format film transfers to HD video. It's likely the original negatives were printed down to 35mm for the digital transfers. I'm not sure if any telecines such as the Spirit DataCine can handle film stock larger than 35mm.
Sunday is going to be a great day for HDTV! I'll be seeing my first HD football game!

I've also only seen it when tuning to that input. Never seen it occur when watching the input. In other words, if the picture I see is normal on that input it never becomes a double picture.
Here's some pure conjecture.
I'm now wondering if the type of program (interlaced vs. progressive) that is playing when switching to that input makes a difference. Maybe, for some reason, if the Qualia detects an interlaced program over the DVI to HDMI cable on input 6 it gets confused resulting in a double picture because it is expecting a progressive signal, while if a progressive program is playing, the Qualia is happy and no double picture.
ColorTV - I saw the Africa/Serengeti IMAX film on INHD over the weekend. I thought the hippos were in my living room!! Great picture quality. Top quality transfer. As I've said before, the level of detail on this set is phenomenal.
some of those imax films are already available via wmv-hd in 720p and 1080p. I have a couple and they do look very nice on the 006. That line up on INHD looks very impressive. I wish I had some time to get comcast hooked up. I'm afraid to have them monkey with anything this close to the superbowl!
Can anyone help me with their impressions of pq of CNN on comcast vs. d*. This is one of the few channels that my wife watches and it's important that that channel look as good as possible.
thanks,
jp
JP2- To my eyes, all live broadcasts such as CNN or network news programs are very good on Comcast. Don't watch them on Directv so can't comment on a comparison, but your wife will have no problem with CNN on Comcast on the 006.
sliderhss 01-31-05, 06:10 PM Hi all,
I hope to make a decision on the Q006 by Friday. My local Sound Advice Store (A tweeter company) can have my unit delivered by Next Wednesday if I pull the trigger by Friday.
I apprecaite all of the valuable information that has been flowing on Q006 threads. Hopefully I will be able to add good things as well as I connect the unit to my Home Theater System.
I was hoping someone could provide more detailed information on the following:
1) How good is the sound quality of the bolt on speakers? (subjective I know.... but any insight would be appreciated.)
2) What is the actual screen size Width and Height? (not including the outer edges or speakers)
3) I have heard one person talk about the fan noise not being an issue. Does everyone agree?
4) Light Reflections on the screen. I was surprised to hear about this. I have a Sony KDP-65XBR2 that has a most impressive screen that does not have serious reflections. I also have a bright room during the day. Can anyone elaborate on the screen reflections?
5) Does anyone know when the HD TIVO with cablecard is going to be ready to ship?
Thanks
colortv 01-31-05, 06:11 PM jp2,
CNN's live studio cameras look great on Comcast. Of course any incoming news feeds are subject to the quality of the source - with news, you never know. But since the anchor shots look as good as one would expect from SD, it seems that Comcast is not abusing the PQ very much.
HD-Tivo is at least one year away from all reports.

Since I'm not near my 006 to take measurements, I'll defer on that question. The bolt on speakers are OK, as good as I expected them to be. Fine for news or simple soundtracks. But a big screen begs for big sound, so I almost always listen through my external amp. The only exception is late at night when I don't want the subwoofer to shake the house when the nightowl is the only one awake - he's addicted to his new TV! :)
Fan noise in not an issue. I can only hear it when I walk to the rear of the TV, and even then it's a whisper.
My TV room is bright during the day. Also, wall sconces behind our viewing area can reflect in the screen. The screen is not glossy like the current Mits DLP's, and it's obviously got an anti-reflection coating. One might wish for a slightly more matte surface which would diffuse reflections a bit more. But I haven't found the reflections to be annoying in spite of the large surface area. This is a big screen which offers many opportunities to reflect the surroundings - it's not perfect, but the 006 is so good in every other way that it's not a dealbreaker - at least not for me.
Good luck with your set. You may be the first person we've heard from who is taking delivery from a non-Sony Store. List price of $13K?
david mcdaniel 01-31-05, 06:25 PM I really don't think screen reflections will be a problem realizing that light control is always desirable. The TV works well with non-reflective ambient light but will show reflections in dark areas depending on how bright and direct the light is. Bright areas of the screen are bright enough in my experience to overcome most reflected light. Some TVs I've seen reflect less depending on screen coating. It's hard to compete with direct bright light so try to get some light control if you can.
colortv 01-31-05, 06:39 PM I just got confirmation from CBS that the Grammy Awards will be broadcast in HD this year. If this is already common knowledge, pardon the redundant info.
ABC confirms another HD Oscarcast as well.
- 006 looks better with the speakers attached, than not, IMHO. I only utilize my amp for audio, so over the weekend I took off the speakers. I put them back on last night because space is not an issue for me and I think the 006 looks better with the speakers.
- Autoscan Antenna plus cable. I put a splitter on my antenna line that feeds local channels to the HD TiVo, so I could compare the picture to the 006. I re-ran auto channel search, which wiped out all of the channel labeling I had done. I thought this would find OTA channels this time, since I now had an antenna input into the 006, along with cable TV (basic) (I use the HD TiVo through HDMI input 6). I learned you must hit the antenna button on the 006 remote to switch to antenna input, instead of cable input. Only then can you autosearch for OTA channels.
- Optical output from 006 only passes digital sound. I had posted the question earlier, but learned on my own, if you connect an optical cable from the 006 to your amp, only digital broadcasts can be heard. You still need analog cables connected for everything else.
- I recently purchased the JVC DVHS 40000, after such glowing reviews in this thread. It replaced my Sony SVHS. I purchased a few DVHS tapes and watched "Entrapment" over the weekend. The JVC is connected to the 006 via firewire and component cables, and I have an optical cable running to my amp. To be honest, my new Sony 975V puts out just as good a picture and it's not even HD. I've played around with the settings and I still feel the DVD picture is as good as the DVHS. Go figure.
After an extraordinarily difficult ordering process I am happy to relate that my set will arrive on Wednesday! I was amazed by this; I placed my order last Thursday evening, and did NOT expect to have it in place for the SuperBowl. So, Sony is doing a pretty great job regarding delivery speed. Part of this is because I'm in California; these sets are warehoused in Carson (SoCal); from there my set was shipped to Hayward, not quite an hour away from me.
My concern is this: can two guys deliver this thing up one flight of stairs? Also, my staircase -- although fairly wide -- is the switchback style. It goes up half a flight, makes a 180-degree turn at the landing/halfway point, then continues to the top. I'm more than a little bit nervous about getting my set in place without having it excessively muscled around.
Should I insist that they deliver with a larger crew, or have a friend ready to help me assist in the delivery?
Also, could someone comment about the quality of Comcast vs. Direc TV? I've heard people on this forum mention that Comcast has a better picture. On my Toshiba RPTV -- which is ISF'd and pretty dialed-in -- Comcast looks pretty bad. The "basic pkg" channels (1-82) have an awful amount of grain and a wicked herrringbone pattern. Once you go to channels 120 and above (the digital channels) things clear up considerably, but are still not the match for my DSS reception. Finally, every evening I get a huge amount of "breakup" in the HD channels, particularly if there is any motion in the scene. This is accompanied by audio dropouts.
I'm planning on switching out the 6412 box tonight to see if this helps. Any ideas?
Ray

I guess that speaks volumes about the scaler in the Qualia 006. It's doing an incredible job of scaling up SD to 1080p.
I have Entrapment on D Theater and a few other films as well. I plan to rent DVD versions of them and run comparisons. It will be interesting to see the difference. The D Theater tapes are clearly labeled 1080i, so it's hard to imagine DVD at 480 being close in terms of fine resolution - but I don't doubt what you're seeing. An A/B test should show any differences. If SD DVD is as good as 1080i D Theater, how much more can we expect from high definition DVD, also at 1080i?

Ray,
Good to hear from a fellow bay area person. Once the local office receives your set, they will give you a call to finalize the delivery date and time frame. This is the time to advise them about your home layout. They are pretty good and are very careful. They also bring equipment that you don't normally see with other delivery personnel (ramps, etc). Three guys delivered my 006. They also delivered one to Danville on the same day. They are very aware of how heavy and expensive this tv is, so you are in good hands. I do suggest to have an open area like your garage ready, where they can remove it from the box. Once again congrats, and I am happy that you will get to watch Super Bowl on this baby.

Before I subscribed to Comcast, I heard about the evening dropout problem on their digital cable service. That's one of the reasons I subscribed on a month-to-month deal in case I hated their service. So far I have not experienced the problem. One theory I heard is that in the evening when cable internet access peaks and large files are being downloaded/uploaded, the cable nodes are choked and causes tiling and the problems you describe on digital and HD TV. So far, I have not witnessed this.
The only problem I have had is that twice now my Motorola DVR 6412 has crashed and rebooted when I was setting a program to record from the onscreen guide. After rebooting, the program schedule is full of "to be announced" listings and it takes several minutes for the info the be automatically downloaded by Comcast into my 6412. An annoyance for sure.
I agree, the non-digital channels on Comcast are less than stellar, about the same as I have seen on DirecTV. So far I have rarely strayed from the digital channels, except last night when I watched "Pompeii" on the analog Discovery Channel. Other than a lousy audio mix, it looked fairly decent. So does CNN.

Two guys - only if they are EXTREMELY strong, especially the bottom guy who will be carrying most of the weight.
I would strongly suggest 4 guys and this should be covered under "white glove service" with no additonal fee or hassle. In fact, I believe that somewhere in the literature that comes with the TV, Sony itself, recommends using 4 people for the move into any location (not necessarily an upstairs plant).
You should call the local contractor that NVC is using and alert them to the fact that you have an upstairs move with a switchback in the middle which will require 4 movers......otherwise you may be waiting hours for another crew to show up when the initial two guys can't pull it off.

One theory I heard is that in the evening when cable internet access peaks and large files are being downloaded/uploaded, the cable nodes are choked and causes tiling and the problems you describe on digital and HD TV.
So does CNN.
colortv,
Thanks for the info. FWIW, I'm talking extreme PQ problems on channels 1-82, nearly unwatchable. Very grainy and TONS of herringbone/diagonal noise. Even on the higher channels -- where these issues do not exist -- everything looks excessively contrasty and indistinct, kind of like the shots on TV shows that are shot through gauze.
I was wondering if the dropouts might be a bandwidth issue (as you suggest). One thing that happens is that the picture breaks up into many blackish very small blocks, but the picture also breaks into a perfectly geometrical grid that is three rectangles wide by two rectangles tall...

Do you have HBO-HD with Comcast?
Curious if you did an A/B comparison between HD movies through cable veruses your DVHS player.
If "entrapment" was on HBO-HD would that look better than the DVHS tape? or vice versus?
Or would it be a draw?
I think technically they are equal.

Thanks so much, P-M, and you're 100% correct. Just got off the phone with Qualia Support (877.QUALIA3) to tell them I was very concerned about the delivery. They were great, and promised to straighten out the delivery people -- who are obviously trying to maximize profits by minimizing delivery personnel. When I spoke with the local NVC contractor they said they'd delivered a number of these sets over the past two weeks, claiming they've never used more than two people on any delivery.
According to Qualia, the 006 manual states that you should have FOUR people to deliver and install this set. If you're ever in the Bay Area I owe you a beer for saving my precious 006 from excessive mover-induced harm...

brt3, Thanks for the telephone reference numbers. They are now a part of the post #1 FAQ.
Wow, how did we ever get by before there were forums or the internet?! :)
No problems tonight with "double picture" on input 6. That's 2 consecutive nights with no signs of the problem. Go figure. I was unable to induce it either.
Penton - I looked at the loose page warranty information. The Canadian and French versions mention the first replacement bulb within 3 years of the purchase is free. However, the U.S. warranty does NOT mention that. We've all been told the first bulb will be free but we don't have it in writing.

:D
A couple more hints ...although this should be common sense for the movers.
If you also purchased the Sony stand......have them carry that upstairs first as it is only about 30lbs.(I'm guesstimating) less in weight than the TV itself and it will give their muscles a heads-up as to what's in store for the second trip upstairs. Also, except for the height, the dimensions of the stand are roughty the same as the TV so their angles should be similar in going up with the stand.
Also, (I would hope they know this) have them throw a couple of those quilty mover things over the screen so nothing gets scratched up.
Good luck, you'll luv it.:)

Out of curiosity, have you ever changed DVI/HDMI cables?
I believe that the page I'm referring to is entitled "LIMITED WARRANTY" and has the number 2-592-441-02 in the upper right hand corner.
Perhaps this is what the Sony engineers inserted in the first few sets that were in Carson.:D
Maybe they were in a rush to get to that bar I mentioned in Anaheim
:D and forgot to insert yours into all the paperwork?
If you don't have that loose page, I suggest you contact the person at Sony that you used to purchase your 006.

brt3,
Sounds like an extreme problem, maybe localized to your node. Reminiscent of the horrible cable TV experiences I had years ago. But in the 3 weeks that I have been a Comcast HD subscriber, I have seen nothing at all like what you describe on 1-82 or the higher channels. Some very picky people have stopped by to see my 006 and all have been impressed with the Comcast PQ. None more surprised than me. I expected the worst and assumed I'd be doing all my watching on OTA/ATSC until I switched to a post-VOOM satellite service, likely the soon-to-be-improved DirecTV.
But if Comcast maintains the high level of quality I am experiencing, they will have me as a customer for a long time ... at least until DirecTV gets their new birds in the sky and switches to mpeg 4 compression. If I switch from Comcast in the future, I'm going to be looking for a STB/DVR that allows me to offload HD to either HD DVHS or high def DVD. That is a strong suit of the Comcast box to me. Hopefully we'll have the same capability with other services in the future.

Several pages ago, "mark haflich" posted that the shipment of 006's to independent dealers had been delayed 'til March. Now, "sliderhss" says a Tweeter subsidiary, Sound Advice, can deliver a 006 to him next week.
Does anyone know if, in fact, 006's are available through sources other than Sony right now?
FWIW, when I called a local Qualia dealer last week (Maine Video Systems - They have sold several 004's and have one currently set up in their showroom.), Bill Knowles told me to check back in mid-March. He was flying out to Vegas for a Sony dealer meeting in early March and would know more when he returned.
Be skiing ya,

colortv,
Good to hear good things about Comcast PQ once again. I think you're correct about the problem being with my node, or my location on the node. I live on a street -- out in the country, to boot -- where I'm at the very end of the road. I also had terrible problems with PQ on Comcast when I only had basic service (for my daughter), but never did anything much about it as I assumed it involved a problem with the cabling in the house.
Spoke w/Comcast service (a HUGE improvement over the DBS guys) to a very helpful and knowledgeable guy. When I told him about the posts here he said that, yes -- you can have a problem with a node when everyone gets home and starts using the system at once. This would also explain why my internet service occasional slows down in the evenings. But he described it as being more a problem of signal strength and said they could boost my signal level. They're sending a tech out on Thursday, which is perfect since the Qualia arrives on Wednesday.
BTW, I asked them to send a CableCard along with the tech. When I picked up me STBs I asked for a CableCard and was told that these could not be used concurrently with the STB. I know I mentioned this before, but could someone tell me definitively whether there would be any pros or cons to using the Qualia with both the Moto6412 STB/DVR and the CableCard? Would this be a simple matter of just changing which input I viewed the cable on to swich back and forth from CC to STB, or does the CC work in a different fashion? Thanks (in advance) for putting up with an arcane question, but the only reason I want to do this is to make operation extremely simple for my wife and daughter. I've got a color Pronto now, but they like using a simpler remote (like the one with the set) where it's a matter of pressing "power", selecting "channel", and setting the "volume" buttons...

brt3,
If you want to use the Motorola 6412 dual tuner DVR, you can't have cablecard. It's either-or. The 6412 and remote are pretty simple to use - just leave the TV set to the cable box input. The cablebox remote can be your primary remote once you set the Sony codes into it which will make it easy on your wife. Of course you will want the Sony remote handy for your own use if you want to access other functions of the TV. You folks may be ideal candidates for a Harmony or equivalent remote. Happy campers rave about them with the same fervor as TiVo/DVR fans. I'm going to evaluate the upcoming color LCD Harmony remote when it comes out in April. I think it's a model 880. It will drive your TV, cablebox, and all peripherals.

Plus, the stand is still in California where you guys are and NVC had plans to hold everthing up until the stand arrives. I told them to just bring the tv before the Superbowl. I have a study but ugly stand that should suffice for a wk, just won't be a crowd pleaser!

Dilbert1 02-01-05, 12:34 AM My Qualia 006 is due to be delivered this coming Wednesday. I am a bit concerned about them damaging or scratching the unit. The house is a single story and all they have to do is get it through the door - at least there are no stairs. I will make sure they use blankets to cover the screen.
Can I use teflon cups under the feet of the Sony stand to make it easy to slide? My floors are hardwood. What are the feet of the Sony stand like? Do I need cups or pads or what?
I hope dish network is good and that the OTA antenna works to get local HD.

Dilbert1 02-01-05, 12:42 AM I will be using a Denon 2910. I know it will output 480p but I'm sure about 480i. Does anyone know for sure if the Denon 2910 will output 480i? I looked at the manual but I am still uncertain. There are settings for progressive and interlaced but the main option is for 480p - its not clear.

All you gotta do is never leave them alone with your set once they get there. Let them know that you are watching their every move and keep reminding them how much this thing cost you!

Don't know anything about the Denon, but progressive=p, as in 480p, and interlaced=i, as in 480i. Some have posted they feel the progressive signal is better than interlaced. Try out both settings and let us know what you think. Good luck with your delivery!

Penton - I haven't tried to change the DVI to HDMI cable. The last 2 nights I've had no double picture. I thought maybe the cable had come loose at the HDMI end since I've been moving the set (or should I say trying to move the set) over the first week of ownership to get it into the best position. So, two nights ago I took out and reinserted the cable. No problem since. Maybe that's the problem??? Night 3 is tonight so we'll see.
Something for those taking delivery to consider:
If you are getting the Sony stand, which is also very heavy, before the delivery guys place the TV on the stand, please ask them to show you the wheels on the bottom and see if you can figure out why this stand + set doesn't move in a horizontal left to right, or right to left, direction. Or, does the stand actually move in a horizontal direction without the TV seated on it, but once the TV is seated on it, then you can't move it horizontally??
Also, be very careful and try to determine exactly where you want the set to sit, taking into consideration the need to get behind it periodically to make or change connections. Once the TV is seated on the stand it can be moved (but not easily) up and back, but the better it is placed from the outset the better off you will be.
Also, I'm not sure if you can place teflon cups (available in stores like Bed Bath and Beyond) under the wheels that might make it much easier to move the stand and set. I have used those sort of cups very successfully (they do work) but only under big pieces of furniture etc. which have flat corners or legs, and that don't have casters/wheels. The ones I have used have an adhesive side that sticks to the flat piece of wood, so I'm not sure they would work under a wheel. Probably not.
Has anyone tried to put teflon cups under the Sony stand??

Thanks for the reply. I know the difference between interlaced and progressive. The Denon 2910 will arrive with the Qualia. It is not clear how to make the Denon 2910 output 480i and the salesman was no help. My post was unclear in that I had a typo when I said "I'm sure about 480i" it should have been "I'm unsure about 480i". Oh well, I guess I will find out when the unit gets here.
Thanks Dilbert

I have placed teflon cups under the wheels of furniture and a piano. The wheels fit in the cups and work great. I will look very carefully and maybe take a picture.

Thanks Dilbert1.
Since the wheels under the stand appear to be recessed, and since the entire rectangular base of the stand sits on the floor (you can't see the wheels), I doubt adding the teflon cups will allow you to move the stand more easily, but its worth trying.
HiDef Bob 02-01-05, 10:17 AM 1. Sony’s SXRD system is a version of the LCOS system. About 2 years ago Toshiba brought out the first LCOS TV. While hailed for its resolution, test reports were very critical of its contrast and blacks. From what I have seen and read, somehow Sony’s seems have solved both of these problems. While still not equal to a good CRT, the contrast and blacks seem to be as good as or better than the best plasmas. Owner’s comments?
2. One of the faults of RPTV systems that has steered me away from them, is their tendency to darken when moving to the sides or moving from the standing or sitting position. Again Sony seems to have addressed those problems to a reasonable degree. I tried moving somewhat off centre and squatting (the stand was mounted on a platform to bring the set to eye level when standing) in front of a Qualia setup in a Sony Store without experiencing that effect. However, due to the fact the set was displayed in a very brightly lite room, it was hard to fully assess that feature. Owner’s comments?
3. Has anyone heard any rumors, or know from what is currently available in Japan, whether Sony has plans to release a smaller (50-60”) version of this set in the near future? While I love this TV it is just too wide to fit.
It has been a while since I have been really excited about a new television … but the Qualia really has done it! I cannot stop thinking about this amazing set and wanting to have one in my home!
CowboyBFD 02-01-05, 11:43 AM Guys, I rec'd my Qualia 006 on January 18th. I ordered it in the NYC Sony Store on 1/4/05. The delivered mine in an ice storm at 7pm and had to trudge across my snow covered lawn and down 16 very well de-iced steps to get it into my basement. For those of you worried about safe delivery - you better make sure they have FOUR able-bodied men to carry it. This thing was 328 lbs packaged not to mention HUGE!
As far as the 50 and 60" versions of the SXRD, the Sony Store reps claimed that both would be out by July '05...
Anyway, I spent the first night toying around, hooking up my Comcast HDTV with DVR. Interestingly enough, I now have DirectTV (non-HD), Comcast HD w/DVR, DVD, VHS, and my Onkyo 801 all tied together. I have had NO problems at all configuring the 006. The picture, once the set warmed up, has been perfect literally right out of the box.
I chose not to purchase the Sony stand for $1,500 in lieu of having my brother-in-law build me a custom entertainment center so I cannot answer the stand questions...
I have yet to see any flaw in the 006. For those of you waivering between the XBR LCD 70" and the Qualia 006, there is really no comparison. The Qualia 006 picture is smoothe at any distance but amazingly smoothe close up. It is very difficult to discern the pixels even at a few inches away...
The one thing that "bugged" me abut the Qaulia 006, other than the $3,000 bump in price at the last minute, was the garbage Sony remote they include. This remote isn't capable of effectively running most of the components. I decided VERY early on that I would be purchasing a Sony Remote Commander so that everything would be contained in one remote - no regrets there - I can turn on everything in my basement from the recliner, including lights.
The sound system on the Qualia 006 is solid (for TV sound)...Listening to the THX introduction series at the beginning of "Ice Age" at a volume level over 40 results in my walls rattling...FYI - the volume goes up to 65+/-...100 watts to a set mounted speaker system really blows away most other sets.
Hope this helps...

Answers to your first 2 questions.
1) I'm perfectly happy with the blacks and set's contrast ratio.
2) The set can be viewed at very wide angles horizontally and vertically with almost no loss of light output. MUCH BETTER than RPTV CRT sets.
What do other owners think of the set's "built in" sound system?
I have to admit that I dislike it, and always use my AV receiver and my own speakers. I don't know what it is, but the set's speakers seem harsh to me. I find that surprising considering the fact that there are a number of user adjustable settings for the sound in the user menu, and considering that the set has a built in amplifier that most RPTVs don't have.
However, some family members do listen to it, so I'm looking for what others think is the best setting for the treble and bass for programs like CNN (not music). There are choices of "dynamic", "clear voice" and "custom" in the user menu, but neither "dynamic" or "clear voice" sound good to me, so I'm looking for a "custom" setting that will be less harsh to my non-audiophile ears.
I know I should teach them to use a universal remote and shut off the set's speakers and use my AV receiver etc., and it will come to that if I can't find an acceptable custom setting.
HiDef Bob 02-01-05, 12:24 PM Thanks for the info ... now I am really excited! Cannot wait for the 50" and 60" models.
The smoothness - that is the thing that really really impressed me about the Qualia 006 ... the amazing smoothness of the picture, even though the Sony Store where I saw the unit was not using one of Sony's better DVD players. I would love to see this unit hook to a Naim DVD5 or other top quality player. Even better I cannot wait to see a Chicago Cubs game from WGN HD on a Qualia (watched these games last summer on my KV36XBR400 and the PQ was outstanding) ... I am sure it would be like being in the stands!
As far as remotes are concerned ... I think you are better with a Home Theater Master or Harmony ... these remotes are far superior to anything Sony puts out.
Ed Weinman 02-01-05, 12:27 PM I wish Sony would "document" the 50-60" versions so that those of us waiting for this type of information could, finally, breathe!

No official word from Sony, AFAIK.
I called the Sony Qualia number (the one for setting up appointments to see Qualias), and the lady said the only new Qualia coming up in June will be the 46" LCD Qualia 005.
I hope they (Sony reps) are not confusing the Qualia 005 with smaller SXRDs.
If someone knows something more concrete about 50-60" SXRDs - please post.
BIGmouthinDC 02-01-05, 01:13 PM Long time lurker here, I've been building out a room for a large built-in RPTV. I'm putting up the wall treatments now. So the end is in sight.
When I started my journey the Pioneer X20's series seemed to be the choice for RPTV. Now it seems the 006 is number one on my list. Although at $13k I've stopped calling the media wall a stage and I'm now thinking of it as an alter.
But I'd really like some thing about 85 inches. Any chance of a larger SXRD in the pipeline?
SABAlove 02-01-05, 01:19 PM nhey- wife was a little concerned the set was "too big" for our space. turns out detaching the speakers and pushing the unit back a little, in addition to bringing the receiver's speakers in close made it look substantially smaller. the upside is, my wife now has to get used to turning on the amp and TV at the same time (piece of cake given DTV's HD-TIVO remote can do both with one button click). Forced learning, but effective! :-)
For those that have Harmony remotes... are they as easy to program as the are to use?
TetsujinWave 02-01-05, 02:24 PM There's always the Mitsubishi Alpha at that size...
HiDef Bob 02-01-05, 02:29 PM 85" ... if you want to go that big why not buy the Qualia 004 projector?
Have you ever considered just keeping your TV on mute and configuring your remote control to automatically change your stereo to the right input?
I configured mine years ago and the family is happy with it. We use the receiver for everything.
One press of the Sat button on the remote and receiver changes to the sat input and the TV changes to the video 3. Both via discrete codes.

BIGmouth,
I think Mitsubishi offers/offered an 82" RPTV using LCOS technology. I saw one in a local store about 45 days back, but didn't have a chance to do any critical evalutation. I think they were even more expensive than the Qualia006, but if this set is being closed out you might find a deal.
For me the Qualia's outstanding picture quality is more important than absolute screen size. The sharpness of these sets, however, will allow a larger screen size (or closer viewing) than was possible with lower resolution technologies.

Just got off the phone with Debbie at Qualia Customer Service. She's been trying to help with my problem with the delivery company -- to recap, they were trying to deliver my Q006 (tomorrow!) with only two men.
The Qualia manual clearly states you should have four people to move the set. However, if these people are "professional" movers Sony's requirement is that they use at least three men.
Qualia contacted NVS, and is guaranteeing they will make the delivery with three people. So, heads up to everyone waiting for their sets; when the delivery company calls to schedule a date be sure and ask how many people they'll be sending. This could have been a nightmare; there's simply no way they'd have been able to get my set upstairs with only two guys...
24 hours and counting!

With the 006, you can shut off the TV's speakers in the user menu, so I don't have to leave it on mute.
It's no problem for me to set up my remote so one button push turns on the TV and receiver at the same time, and sets the receiver to the correct input to receive the TV's volume. However, I'm just curious what others think of the sound from the 006's speakers, and whether they are able to adjust the treble and bass so that dialogue is at least reasonably listenable.
hdnathan 02-01-05, 02:53 PM I have a photo of the 005 taken at CES if only I know how to attach to this thread I'd share it with you folks.
spider4re 02-01-05, 03:00 PM When they do come out with the 50" and 60" versions (wishfully thinking), do you think everything internally will remain the same (scaler, etc.)? I can't fit a 70" in my built-in but a 60" would be perfect. It would be important to me that the same technology that the 70" has will be in the smaller versions.
Thoughts?

Sony have announced a number of new TV's including the Qualia 005, a 46" LCD TV that uses LEDs (light emitting diodes) as a backlight (Sony claim this improves the color reproduction of the TV).
Other features include Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer, regular TV to HDTV upscaler (makes regular TV look better), and cross media bar GUI. The price is around $10,000.

Availability to be anounced later

That would be the Mits WL-82913 LCoS set. A salesman at Sound Advice/Tweeter here in Ft. Lauderdale told me a few months ago he could let me have it for $18,000. :)
peterhodes 02-01-05, 04:35 PM You can but the 82" Mits at a number of places for $11-12,000.

I think the sound quality of 006 is certainly acceptable. But in no event is it anywhere near what I am used to with my Denon 3503 and 5.1 speakers. When I watch ota using the Sony tuner I use the Sony speakers. I did tweak the various sound adjusments on the Sony. Most of the time I watch ota thru my Hughes stb and the sound trough the Denon is outstanding. I am considering getting an optical cable to output the Sony sound to my Denon and not using the Sony speakers at all.

h2osports 02-01-05, 04:53 PM It would seem logical to me that if Sony has spent many millions of dollars developing the SXRD technology and many millions more building and equipping a fab plant to make the actual chips; they aren't going to stop at a single 70" RPTV that retails for $13k!
To recoup/make a profit on such a large investment, Sony will have to come out with many more products featuring the SXRD technology.
IIRC, their new fab plant won't be ready 'til 2006; so that may be when we see 50" - 60" Qualias, as well as even lower price point XBR/SXRD displays.

Penton-Man 02-01-05, 04:54 PM No offense to any owners or potential owners but, I wouldn't pay half that much for that TV.(Mits Alpha)
BIGmouthinDC 02-01-05, 04:55 PM We prefer to keep the lights up in our viewing area and a Rear Projection seems to make the most sense.
I looked at the Alpha and was unimpressed at the picture quality and how washed out the blacks were.
I also thought about getting a projector and the necessary mirrors and screen to build it into the wall. But then isn't the 006 basically a junior version of the 004 projector built into a portable wall? I'd just like it bigger.

Penton - If you look at number 2-592-441-02 you will see it is the Canadian warranty not the U.S. Warranty. It mentions Sony Canada in the first sentence. The U.S. warranty is 2-592-029-02, and does not say anything about a replacement bulb.

Careful with brand bashing.
Anyway, if you question Liquid Crystal longevity in Qualia 006, you may have point. The longevity is unknown. Transmissive Liquid Crystals in projection devices tend to discolor with time, but Qualia is LCoS, so it may be different.
As for $13,000 for RP - sound like your grapes are sour. They seem to be selling like hotcakes to those who can afford them.

nhey,
I had a 70" XBR, and the speaker sound from the XBR were alot better than the one on the 006. The 006 speakers are still good enough if you don't have a external sound system, but the XBR had a deeper bass sound, just more solid. I had to adjust the 006 bass a little higher, including the subwoofer setting, just to satisfy me.

Maybe, for some reason, if the Qualia detects an interlaced program over the DVI to HDMI cable on input 6 it gets confused resulting in a double picture because it is expecting a progressive signal, while if a progressive program is playing, the Qualia is happy and no double picture.
Or perhaps vice versa?
I got the double pic when I first tuned into "24" last night.

No double picture tonight on input 6 - that's 3 nights in a row that it's been O.K.
Try pressing in the cable into the back of the set. Since I did that it's been fine - Just another theory that may go kaboom tomorrow...

Penton-Man,
Does this mean that Qualia/Vegas is misinformed? I grilled Brian for about ten minutes, asking if he was positive that current purchasers of the Qualia006 would get the first bulb replacement for free. He said absolutely, unequivocably yes, but when I asked for paper documentation on this policy he said there was none. According to him Sony will keep track of who's eligible, and things will be "taken care of" when you contact them for bulb replacement...

Plus, the stand is still in California where you guys are and NVC had plans to hold everthing up until the stand arrives. I told them to just bring the tv before the Superbowl. I have a study but ugly stand that should suffice for a wk, just won't be a crowd pleaser!
Good look to all those awaiting!

slimoli 02-02-05, 11:21 AM Could anyone who already have this wonderful TV tell me if you can change aspect ratio when the input is through the components or HDMI? The reason of my question is because I will be using a DishNetwork receiver that does a very poor job with AR and I would rather use the 006 stretch modes when program is SD. I know the old Sonys lock in FULL mode when the signal comes through components and is anything better than 480P.

I don’t know. If I recollect, I think that someone was also told the same from the Sony people at the store in N.Y.C.
Anybody remember for sure?
It may be a good idea while this is still hopefully fresh in Brian’s mind, to have him e-mail you something to the effect that the first replacement bulb for you is free as per verbal agreement of xxxx, 2005.
Who knows if Brian will even be working at the Sony store in Vegas 3 years from now much less recall what he told you when you were interested in the purchase.
Just think….you could be the first to set a precedent for the rest of the Qualia 006 family….in the U.S.
And speaking of those that have a potentially difficult delivery (upstairs location, basement location, “out younder in the guest cabin”, it may be reassuring to have the Sony cierge e-mail you something to the effect that the sale is contingent upon successful delivery of the Qualia bird to said location, negotiating the switchback in the stairs(be as specific as possible) – which they WILL do and have done.
BIGmouthinDC 02-02-05, 12:26 PM If I had to have my new toy delivered up stairs with a switch back I think I would be removing hand rails, wall sconces and any thing that protrudes past the wall surface before the delivery day to avoid any accidents.

Well, Sony, you are going to do one H*LL of a lot better if you think you can sell $13K RPTVs, $4K digital cameras, $2.5K headphones (etc., etc.) without providing a commensurately high level of customer service (see: Lexus).
After a horrible experience ordering this set I did NOT believe things could get any worse. See post #3 at:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=5068507&highlight=brt3#post5068507
Well, I think the delivery process is at least as bad, or even worse. Let's sum up:
MONDAY AM: get call from Qualia/Vegas stating that set is in Hayward (nearby); I should expect a call from delivery agent within 24 hours.
MONDAY PM: get call from Dedicated Logistics, the NVC Logistics agent handling delivery. Delivery is arranged for Wednesday. Find out they will attempt delivery with two men, since they "do it all the time" and have "delivered many of these sets over the past two weeks".
MONDAY PM: Contact Debbie at Qualia with concerns about delivery.
TUESDAY AM: Debbie calls back; states that Qualia manual wants four people to move set, but they will make delivery with three men.
TUESDAY PM: Get call from Pat at NVC HQ in New Jersey. He is sorry I've had a problem, and tells me they will absolutely use at least three guys on my delivery. Great, I tell him, because I won't let the guys in if they show up with two men. "No problem!", says Pat, guaranteeing me there will be three guys on the job.
WEDNESDAY: delivery driver calls to pin down the delivery time to around 3 PM. "How many guys on your crew?", I ask. He says... "TWO! We couldn't even load the damn thing without using a fork lift, and I don't know how they expect us to do the job with only two guys.". Immediately borrow wife's blood pressure monitor...
WEDNESDAY: Calll Pat at NVC HQ. Tell him the scenario. "I'll get right on it and call you back", says he.
WEDNESDAY: True to his word Pat calls right back; the delivery will be made today and they will send a third man, guaranteed. The delivery will be a bit later than originally promised since they've had to "scramble" a third man.
WEDNESDAY: Five minutes after getting off the phone with Pat, Amanda at Dedicated Logistics (the local delivery agent) calls; "Would you mind if we deliver your set on Thursday? We really can't spare anyone, and there's no way we can spare a third man for your job!", states she. Begin swallowing handfuls of wife's blood-pressure medication...
WEDNESDAY: Call Pat at NVC HQ. I'm strangely curious as to why he guaranteed delivery (yet again) with three people, and even curiouser that his delivery agent would call me five minutes later trying to beg out of the job. "Hmmm", says Pat; "let me look into that for you!". At this point Pat starts waffling; he asks if I'd care if they just dropped the set off in my garage today and return on Thursday to move it into place. At this point I'm so fed up I tell Pat to find out why his company keeps promising delivery with a three-man crew, and to call me back when he can actually guarantee me that a guarantee will be guaranteed.
WEDNESDAY PM: I get on the phone to Qualia Customer Service and ask to speak with a manager or supervisor. I am awaiting their call back...
WEDNESDAY PM: Pat from NVC HQ calls me back. He says they will come today, offload the set into my garage, and return tomorrow/Thursday with a four-man crew who have delivered these sets several times before.
The saga continues...
Mommy, make it stop!

bernster,
Good to hear your deliveries went well! Hope yours is equally good, Dilbert1.
And, believe it or not, I don't usually b*tch & moan; this has just been a very frustrating experience to date. Also, as I mentioned this is a tough delivery: up 1/2 flight of stairs, 180-degree turn on landing, up 1/2 flight of stairs to second story. I'd rather get it right than get it quick; it's just frustrating when you're (repeatedly) told one thing and learn another to be true...
Thinking happy thoughts for tomorrow, and I'll bet a week of watching this set will make me forget about the experience of obtaining it. It DOES point out, though, that Sony needs local dealers selling these sets!

I don't think it was meant for you to have one of these tvs. I would cancel the order and have them return the tv to Sony. Just kidding, sorry to hear the frustration. Since they have the tv already in the truck, I would let them deliver it to your garage, where it'll be safe for now, and then have it set up tomorrow with the promised four man crew.
It's unlikely that they'll leave the TV without a signed delivery ticket showing that they delivered it. Then getting them back will be the new problem.
You are doing the right thing. Stay your ground. I wouldn't even let them leave it in my garage. What about if you have really bad luck and some guy crashes into your garage? Who is liable at that point for your set?

An upstairs or downstairs drop can lead to potential problems as I have outlined before.
The problem is that you have to deal with multiple different people.
1st your Sony cierge salesperson.
2nd -NVC
3rd- NVC’s local contractor.
Another hint (in addition to the one I listed on my prior post a few pages back) – ask you Sony cierge when they fax the order to NVC to include on the statement “Upstairs delivery, with a whatever to negotiate – needs 4 person crew)”
Then call NVC as soon as you are in their computer system and confirm that they know this is a more involved delivery and received the heads-up from Sony and get the name and number of the local contractor ….if they haven’t called you within 48 hours.
Call the local contractor. Tell THEM about the difficult delivery site and reaffirm that more than 2 people will show up.
Then pray to whoever who pray to ….or offer up an old VCR in your barbecue to the video gods if you still live in that era ..and hope for the best.
Brt3- don’t take too much of your wife’s b.p. medication because the next thing that will happen is you’ll develop orthostatic hypotension – fall down – receive skull fracture- develop epidural hematoma - need craniotomy- no Neurosurgeon in your town because he fled to another state due to increased malpractice fees- pressure on brain gets higher- brainstem begins to herniate- medivac you to U.C.S.F.- your wife promises to give your Qualia to the hospital for their lobby in order to have you immediately attended to – you end up with a hole in your head- no Qualia 006- and a happy Hospital Administrator!

slocko said: "You are doing the right thing. Stay your ground. I wouldn't even let them leave it in my garage. What about if you have really bad luck and some guy crashes into your garage? Who is liable at that point for your set?"
Thanks, guys, for the input. Believe me, kaduku, that thought had crossed my mind. But your course is the one I chose -- get the set here and unloaded safely, then wait 'til tomorrow for a full crew to do it right. I did NOT want my set taking another bumpy truck ride tomorrow!
I'm lucky in that I live out in the country and it's very secure here. I was going to have them place it into the garage when my wife suggested we park it right inside the front door (it's a wide entry hall). Bless her for thinking for me, as this way the set will be at room temperature in the AM. It won't go from 45 degrees to 70 degrees, and I'll be able to use it right away without a second thought...
Should get the delivery in about 90 minutes; will try and document it with my camera. I know this has been done before, so I'll only post the pix if they come out exceptionally well...

Not necessary.
I already relayed to the powers that be that I believe that this was probably a "handshake issue" and was not even the "fault" of the 006 as I believe I stated in my first post.
But it's good to have them check it out anyway!

Ray,
Sorry to hear the delivery arrangements have been difficult, but this negative stuff will soon be forgotten. You'll be in awe of your new TV and focused on the great experiences you will have for years to come.

Please check your PM. Thanks.
Perhaps this should be added to the FAQ; I've adapted Penton-Man's post below...
Given that a Qualia 006 weighs 273 pounds a careful delivery is crucial. One problem is that you have to deal with multiple different people:
1st: your Sony cierge salesperson.
2nd: NVC Logistics Group (who get the set from the Sony warehouse to their local delivery agent)
3rd: NVC’s local delivery agent (who deliver and set-up your set.
If your delivery is anything other than a simple carry ask your Sony cierge (when they fax the order to NVC) to include this information on the statement: for example, “Upstairs delivery, (with a XYZ to negotiate) – needs 4 person crew!”
Then call NVC as soon as you are in their computer system, confirm that they know this is a more involved delivery and received the heads-up from Sony, and get the name and number of the local contractor (if they haven’t called you within 48 hours).
Call the local contractor. Tell THEM about the difficult delivery site and reaffirm that more than 2 people will show up. It is crucial to double-check this information when you call back (usually the day before) for the delivery window.

I was so amazed at the claims by the author of the article that you posted a few pages back (http://news.designtechnica.com/talkback45.html) that I submitted it to Bob Pariseau for his evaluation. It was in correlation to a previous poster asking about HDMI connections from his Panny S97 DVD player to a receiver with an HDMI input.
For those that are unfamiliar with Bob, I think that he is one of the most respected members of this forum as evidenced by his correct and insightful postings. This is what he said in regards to that article….
Penton-man,
I'm not sure what that guy is talking about in that article. I've yet to encounter an HDMI equipped source device that isn't capable of sending 5.1 digital audio out the HDMI cable for HDTV or for regular DVDs. I can't confirm for the S97 since I haven't played with one, but I see no reason to expect they'd have a limitation here.
Now there *ARE* TVs that have HDMI inputs but either will not accept audio over the HDMI input (because they have no internal digital audio decoder) or will only accept 2-channel digital audio over the HDMI input. Typically, HDMI equipped TVs that also have an internal HDTV tuner *WILL* accept 5.1 digital audio over HDMI since they already have the 5.1 decoder inside as part of the HDTV tuner.

How do you think this 1080p DVD player will do with the Qualia? Since the Qualia doesn't take a 1080p input, would you get a blank screen if you set the output to 1080p?
I am thinking this player would be worthless with the Qualia as the Qualia's scalar is probably better than the DVD players scalar.
Houston, the Eagle has landed!
Though I waited all day long -- my delivery time went from 10AM-3PM, changed to 4PM, and kept getting bumped until the delivery guys showed up around 7:00 PM. Darn set spent all day and about 300 miles on the movers' truck (arrgghhh!), but is brutally well packed. The packaging materials for the set alone weigh close to 50 pounds.
It was a Keystone Kops moment as they unloaded the thing off the truck on a SINGLE dolly. They couldn't figure out why I wanted them to use two.
I unboxed everything to check things out. The first thing that strikes you is the size of the stand -- I'm 6'7" and could use it as a coffin...
The hard part is tomorrow. BTW, the set comes with a rather large page taped to the rear showing exactly how to hold it while it is being moved. This form asks for FOUR people to move the set regardless of the circumstance.
Wish us luck,
Ray
MotorMouth777 02-02-05, 11:28 PM Since waiting for my 006 has absolutely driven me crazy I have nothing better to do than muck around with my 8th grade math that I barely remember.
In a 16:9 rectangle that is your TV think of the diagonal as the long side of a triangle.............so if you were to approximate the math (you know...A squared times B squared equals C squared) Since you know this triangle is 16 units wide for every nine high and you know the diagonal distance (70 inches) it works out the diagonal is approx 1.17 times the width. Take a screen then that is 16 inches wide and 9 high......Solve it by (16 x 16) + (9 x 9) = C squared (or 337). Now take the square root of 337 and it is 18.357559750685819298491719518707 Lets just say 18.36 amongst us friends. Now divide 18.36 by 16 and you get 1.15
For simplicity just divide your diagonal by 1.15 and you will be close enough to the width for government work. It magically comes to about 61 inches. Your height is approximately 1/2 your diagonal or in this case 35 inches.
So for a 70 inch diagonal TV you would have
width 61
height 35
For a 65 inch diagonal
width 56.5 inches
height 32.5
For a 60 inch diagonal
width 52
height 30
For a 55 inch diagonal
height 48
width 27.5
For a 50 inch diagonal
height 43.5
width 25
Now if you really wanted to have even more fun you could calculate the size of the 4:3 image inside your 16:9 TV if you display it with the bars on each size. For the Qualia 006 your displayed 4:3 image is just like a 56 inch diagonal TV inside there.
Wow........now that was fun. I've got 30 days before they can ship my 006...........what the hell is that poor planning about.

Hey -- one other delivery caveat comes to mind. If I did it over again I'd have told the movers the could come any day this week before 10AM. If the delivery company would meet that request it would prevent the set from spending all day on the truck, getting bumped around and shifted out of the way for other deliveries.
That's right: I'm anal-retentive and proud of it...

colortv 02-03-05, 01:11 AM I've always poo-poohed American Idol regardless of its popularity. But WOW, it looks incredible in HD on the 006. I'm becoming a fan of TV all over again. SXRD is addicting!
For those of you that are or planning to play with XBOX on the 006 with the high definition adapter, an earlier post had me set the XBOX to 1080i only and disable 480i/480p and 720p. Anyway the PQ was not so bad, then I noticed on the Halo 2 box, it said to set the console to 480p. When I did enable it to 480p, the PQ greatly improved to like HD quality. Try it out and see the difference. The great 006 scaler is obvious at work here!!!!
MotorMouth777 02-03-05, 01:45 AM Color, Penton, JB or anyone....how does your SD look....specifically SD from cable if you have it and not OTA. Also do you watch SD material in 4:3 with bars or does the 006 allow you to incrementally zoom it.
Quivering in anticipation for delivery...........Its been a struggle getting the extra dough but now thats over this is gonna be a long 4 weeks.

SD on the Comcast digital channels looks quite good. But many of the non-digital channels are not so good. CNN looks good, but the locals on the non-digital channels are awful. No reason to watch the non-digital locals since they are also available on the digital channels and look much better. Stuff like Home Shopping looks pretty bad, I don't know why. But it also looks bad on my old SDTV in the bedroom which has a non-HD Comcast box hooked up to it. 4:3 video is pillarboxed. CBS seems to favor gray bars in their pillarbox, others are black. You can zoom to fill the entire frame but I never do that - personal choice. I haven't even tried it but I see the function on the remote.
kmbutts 02-03-05, 07:30 AM Hello everyone!
I am Kevin from Atlanta, and like so many of you, I have been searching the web for any Qualia info I could find! My wife and I are will start building our home in March and I am sure that it won't be ready until the latter part of the year, which will give me ample opportunity to closely follow this forum for information regarding the performance of this magnificent set!
I must admit that I never looked at another brand other than Sony during this whole time; I had narrowed my choices to the KDF-60XS955 and the Qualia since I first heard about it. I had a painful internal struggle trying to justify spending an extra 6,000 dollars for 10 extra inches of screen when the price was first released. So you could imagine my horror when I called the Sony Store in NY to discover that a 3,000 dollar increase had been added. I had all but given up hope of owning the Qualia and focused on buying the 60XS955 instead.
Then something magical happened; I was discussing the floor plans with my wife when she made the comment of how big the great-room was, and that she felt that we would need a really, really big TV in order to fit the vision that we had for the entertainment area for the great room; she then uttered the words that have kept me on cloud nine ever since: "If you know of a big TV that you can get within a 15,000 range, get it!
I LOVE MY WIFE! I showed her the information on the Qualia and she is on board the Qualia Express!
I do, however have a couple of questions that I'd like to ask you privileged owners.
1. I saw a few threads back that someone was displaying images of Amazon from the Windows Media HD Video series; my question is, in order to view the HD DVD from Windows Media, will the Qualia need to be hooked up to a PC, or can the disc be viewed through a HD DVD Player instead?
2. Would any of you recommend that I use the Monster Cable's Signature AVS2000 Automatic Voltage Stabilizer and their upgraded THX Ultra component cables?
3. Would it be better to use a 5.1 or 7.1 home theater set up for this beast?
4. Would it be overkill to purchase both a HD VHS machine i.e. the HM-DT100U and a Blu-Ray DVD player?
Whew! That was a mouth full!!
I thank you all in advance for all of your advice!
Some updates:
1) Last night was 4 days in a row with no double picture when switching to input 6. The only change I made 4 days ago was to press the HDMI end of the cable that connects my Comcast 6412 DVR box to the Qualia more firmly into input 6 on the back of the Qualia.
2) Got my replacement HD-TIVO box from Directv yesterday, and the HDMI to HDMI on input 7 works perfectly (HD-TIVO box manufactured in October 2004)!
Here's something interesting I didn't think of that occurred:
I have a component cable and an optical digital audio out connection from the HD-TIVO to my AV receiver, with a component cable from the AV receiver to input 4 on the Qualia. I now have added an HDMI to HDMI cable from the HD-TIVO to input 7 on the Qualia. When I switch to input 7, I hear audio from the TV's speakers (because I am inputting audio and video directly to the Qualia from the HD-TIVO via the HDMI to HDMI connection), and I also hear audio from the AV receiver via my stereo system speakers. So, it seems that if you are sending audio over an HDMI to HDMI cable to the Qualia, that the Qualia will output audio over its speakers. You can, of course, disable the Qualia's speakers in the Sound menu if you want.
3) Regarding HDMI carrying, or not carrying DD5.1. I've also been doing some research to find out if article that I posted a few pages ago is correct or not. If you read the 006 manual, you will see that it mentions that its HDMI inputs accept 2 channel stereo. I also checked the Denon web site and it mentions that its most recent DVD players the 3910 and the just released 5910 (with the new realta decoder chip) both output multichannel audio over their HDMI outputs, and play it up like this is a new feature that wasn't the case previously. It looks like the Qualia's HDMI input only accepts 2 channel stereo, but if it did accept 5.1 how would you use it? Would you output it over the 006's digital audio out back to your receiver??
If you connected an HD-TIVO or DVD player that has an HDMI output (and let's say it does output 5.1) to an AV receiver with an HDMI input (and let's say it accepts 5.1 over an HDMI cable), you'd be able to play the 5.1 audio through your stereo system. You'd then connect your AV receiver to the Qualia with an HDMI to HDMI cable to input 7 to get the video. But would audio also be carried to the Qualia over that HDMI cable - in which case audio would also be output over the TVs speakers (assuming they were on) - or is the AV receiver smart enough to send through video only over the HDMI cable to the TV? (or maybe it will have a setting to do this)?
I always liked i link for the fact that it does it all. It will take a bit of time for them to come up with a standard...When they do this will lower the cost of the TV as well. DVI does the job but looks impressive , after you hook it up you never look at it again, then they said they will add audio to it, don't know if they did or not , now we are into some HDMI & some do the i link.

Yes, iLink/Firewire does the job well. No audio or video issues, you get it all. EXCEPT... you can't see the on-screen menus from the STB/DVR or a DVHS machine connected via iLink. For whatever reason, iLink doesn't pass the menus which make it not a good solution for a STB/DVR since operation of them is onscreen menu-intensive.
I will PM you soon Mr. Color Tv . I have had a lot going this Morning.
Just got my set delivered and am in the middle of set-up. They sent four people as promised, and did a very good job of moving the set into place.
Also got a call-back from Qualia customer service, this time from a supervisor. She confirmed with me -- in absolute terms -- that our first bulb replacement is free of charge, and confirmed that their official position is that four people need to move the set.
Question: just watched the end of "Malcolm X" in HD. First off, there is a tremendous scene where Malcolm takes his hajj/pilgrimage to Mecca. He is alone inside an enormous mosque. This is a very challenging scene because the colors are intense (the floor is covered entirely in vibrant red rugs) and there is a huge range of dark to light. A large electric chandelier glows brightly over his head, the roof and outer walls are quite dark, and the door in the background is open with intense sunlight outside. On my set (without being totally dialed in: Pro setting, warm temp, most other settings at default) the highlights seem burned out, like when a digital photo is overexposed and the detail is lost. This film may run again later tonight and would be a good reference for fine-tuning picture on any set.
Also, at the end credits the roll is extremely jumpy. Is this jitter attributable to my Comcast 6412? Currently I am feeding the Comcast box into the Qualia via the component connection at 1080i. My DVI to HDMI cable arrives tomorrow, so I'll reconnect that way and see if it makes a difference.
One other thing. I have NEVER seen a set with this kind of detail -- it's truly stunning. I still have the set pulled out from the wall to load my equipment, and am sitting extremely close because of this. You'd never be able to tolerate this on 98% of the sets or projectors out there, but you have to be very close (with HD material) to be annoyed by being able to see the "structure" underlying the picture. The picture initially looked a bit "digital", but I've gone through the Advanced menu, played with some of the obvious settings, and things are much smoother now...
Ray
I want to thank everyone in this great thread for all the info and input.
I "pulled the trigger" last week with the LV store and it arrived today
right on schedule and even earlier in the day than expected.
The 006 made it safely in it's resting place but not without the struggles
I have read about in here. There was a young guy and his father,
that was it!! I have several level changes before getting in my den and
the father was not up to the required lifting. Fortunately I ate Wheaties
this morning and stepped in. We had one little square dolly for travel to
the front porch. The rest was grunting, groaning, and guiding.
I am quite sore and a bit frustrated. This was the only heavy item on their
load and they had no clue it was going to be so heavy. This was their first
006. Sony really needs to take better control of these deliveries before
a tv gets smashed or someone gets hurt. Enough of my complaints.
Well Colortv, the cat is out of the bag. One of my friends from work drove
by while unpacking. He was quickly on his cell phone to spread the word
for Sunday. I am going to give it a little time to warm up before I fire it up.
The tv was in near freezing temps all morning on the road.
My first thought is "BIG" and a good looking front.
And did I mention HEAVY!!
My reference will be a Fujitsu P50/40 that has been very impressive.
The four key pieces connecting to it are:
Pio Elite DV59AVi DVD w/iLink for audio and HDMI for Video
JVC HM-DH5U DVHS deck w/component or HDMI or Firewire
Voom w/component or DVI/HDMI
HDTivo w/component or HDMI
Time for a late lunch and a breather.
Once again, thank you for everything.
Back this evening with impressions.
Cheers:D :D
Martin
Can any of the owners state whether or not the color decoder on the 006 is set correctly based on either a signal generator or perhaps DVE?
Some Sonys have about a 15% red push that if corrected screws up other colors. I was just wondering if they did the same on the 006 or not.
Thanks

Yes, I've been waiting for you!
Please try passing 480i over HDMI vs. 1080i from you Pio Elite to the 006 and tell us which looks best- if you can indeed discern any difference.
Congrats on a safe delivery.:)

The burned out highlights are directly attributable to the Qualia's picture setting, which is maxed out on the default VIVID setting. Change your settings to those that have been recommended and you won't see the problem unless the film was transferred with clipped highlights. Some material shot with TV cameras can exhibit clipped highlights as well, depending on the camera settings when the video was shot. Your Qualia will not burn out the highlights when you make the proper settings.
Not sure about the jittery crawl - I have not see that on DVD's or cable programs. I don't think HDMI will have any affect on that. It's possible the jitter is in the film transfer and your TV is just passing along what it is getting.

the xbox game that I mentioned was mx unleashed which is one of the few 1080i xbox games. halo 2 was a demo that I downloaded for the pc not the xbox. I was trying to give punkzip an idea about any motion lag from the halo (pc) and xbox games. btw, I did not notice any motion lag with either.
kevin,
amazon on the wmv-hd was played via my htpc connected to the 006's hdmi port. I not sure if there are stand alone dvd players that support wmv-hd yet. you should check the dvd forum for updates and the bravo and avel link dvd players to see if the decode the ms wmv-hd dvds.
jimp,
the color decoder was spot on according to both dve and a colorfacts 6000 analyzer.
so far the sd channels like cnn from d* do not look as good as they did via the 57" toshiba lcos tv that I had for a couple of years. I'm not sure it's due to the size difference or perhaps electronics inside the set. There seems to be more artifacts on the 006 with most sd channels. With hd channels both look very good.

jp2,
I'm sorry, I thought to set it at 1080i for all the games. Will the game at 1080i be better than one at 480p?
Dilbert1 02-03-05, 07:49 PM Just got Dish Network installed and was finally able to get HDdiscovery. Absolutely stunning colors and detail! Saw a car show and the colors were
incredibly intense! Very, very impressive.
I have much more to relate but not a lot of time right now. I am trying to figure out how to remove the Video 5 popup in the upper left hand corner. It must be simple but I am a bit saturated with everything going on at once. Perhaps someone knows how to remove that video popup.
My only concern at this moment has to do with black level. Blacks are very
black but I have been noticing that some scenes have too much black. I understood that this set is reasonably good with shadow detail so I am wondering why I may be seeing a lot of black crush. I will try to get a DVD to test this. I am using the default "normal" video setting.
Incidentally the Sony stand has 8 wheels and moves very easy on my hardwood floors (with the Qualia).
I am going out to get a DVI/HDMI cable - I am using component video cables at the moment.

To get rid of the Video 5 popup, or any popup, press the Exit button towards the bottom of the remote.
Are you able to move the stand + 006 left and right???? Its not supposed to move in those directions, and on my carpeted floor it definitely does not.

Tulsa 1
In regards to the above....when you pass 480i over HDMi (and ONLY for that resolution) you need to alter the HDMI Direct set of settings to Blacks of 7.5 IRE and to HDMI Color Adjust of Enhanced (on your Pio Elite of course) to get BOTH BTB and WTW data to pass correctly.
Bottom line -
This will tell you if the scaler in your Pioneer DVD player or the scaler in the Qualia is better.

If you want to specifically remove a video popup when you toggle thru the video selections....then see p.123 (I think) in the manual.

did jp2 ever post his full final standard settings...other than the warm color temp?

I don't believe we have talked about viewing distances in this forum. My viewing distance is about 12 to 13 feet. I would be very interested in knowing what veiwing distances are for other people and how it is working out (picture size versus distance). The picture is fantastic at any distance.

Thank you for the reply. There are 8 wheels on the bottom of the stand.
They do not swivel. On a hardwood floor the Qualia moves very easy with one hand. Moving sideways requires sort the kind of action you would use when parallel parking. You can't move your car sideways but you can make an "S" shaped steering action. It is easy on a hard smooth floor but probably harder on a carpet with lots of padding underneath. Teflon pads are not practical because each of the 8 wheels is actually a set of dual wheels that are just too big to fit in the teflon cups.
The stand is fine with me right now. I think the height of the Qualia is important and anyone looking to build or buy a stand has to consider height very carefully.
I wish there was a way to cut the viewing area by 75% for watching the news. I don't need an immersive experience watching a talking head that is 3 times as large as mine. I thought of using the freeze frame button - this freezes a frame and continues to display the live action in a smaller frame. Is there a better way to do this?
How has the shadow detail been on the Qualia for it's owners? Why am I seeing so many dark (black) areas?
Again....... the picture is stunning. I saw lava flowing from a volcano on the Qualia and I was flinching from the intense color and imagined heat!!!!

The first row of seats in my dedicated home theater room is 9.5 ft. eyeball to screen.(the people in the peanut gallery sit a few feet back in the second row)
I find this ideal for DVD's and sports. I find it acceptable to my eyes for broadcast series.

My viewing distance is 12 feet also, which I think is perfect, though it would not matter with this fantastic tv.

EastVillager,
Another wise man!!!! Welcome to the Qualia gang!!!!
Dilbert1 -
Thanks for your feedback. Welcome to the club of very satisfied owners. After reading your post about shadow detail I carefully viewed parts of the Matrix on HBOHD and CSI tonight since both have many dark scenes. I was very satisfied with the shadow detail. I agree that distance shots, such as of a person wearing very dark or black clothing when viewed from a distance looks to be solid black with few if any details visible, but I think that would be the same with a CRT RPTV. However, close ups of the same individuals showed plenty of detail. You'll probably be able to improve the shadow detail you are seeing as you get used to the set and have time to adjust the settings. Maybe increasing brightness a step or two on "dark" shows will help.
I think the consensus that I'm reading is that the most outstanding attribute of this set is the incredibly detailed images. Watching CSI tonight, the close-ups of faces, where you could see all the blemishes, very fine facial hair (on women), etc. was incredible.
Penton - my calibrator (Eliab of avical.com) comes on Feb. 23. Since he does his adjustments in the service menu and zeroes out the settings, unfortunately I won't be able to convey what his calibrated settings are, but I will be able to tell you if he feels the set really needs to be calibrated. He will, of course, set the grey scale to 6500K for my HD and DVD inputs.
I'm using these settings for my component connection: Pro, picture = 58, brightness and sharpness about where the default is (the bar has a small circle and I leave the settings there), color temp. = warm, and basically all else the defaults. These all were fine on the basic patterns in Digital Video Essentials, and with the THX optimizer on some DVDs.
For input 6 (by the way tonight was the 5th straight night with no double picture) and input 7 I'm using these inaccurate, but very striking settings: Vivid, picture = 56 (to tone down the contrast), color temp. = cool or neutral (cool gives a bluish tint to the whites but also makes them really bright and striking), and basically all else the default settings under Vivid. When I show friends (non-videophile types) the set using those settings they are stunned at the detail, brightness, etc. of the set. I tell them those are inaccurate settings but they all tell me they've never seen a picture as good as that. I then switch to the more accurate settings on input 4, and they see a movie theater type picture and are also very impressed, and just sit and stare. GOT TO LOVE IT!!
Here's hoping for continued days with no problems with this set!
I have to say I'm floored by this TV. Regarding my previous post about jittery titles and overly hot highlights: I think I have things more accurately dialed in at this point.
To everyone who has yet to install: please do NOT judge the internal DRC/scaler performance when you first turn on the set. I'm using the Sony NS975V via HDMI. Initially I thought the combo performed best with the player outputting 1080i. After dialing in the settings on the DRC I am amazed by the quality with the player sending 480i to the set for scaling. Man-oh-man; I threw in the new Superbit/Deluxe Edition copy of "The Fifth Element"; I think I know every frame of this film by heart. I am really impressed by the superb picture of the Qualia. Pores, facial stubble, every little detail is beautifully rendered. This is as close as I've seen to 9" CRT performance, and in some ways it exceeds this benchmark. The blacks are not absolutely perfect, but if state-of-the-art CRT rates 100 points then the Qualia gets a 90 in my book. This is one impressive RPTV -- I NEVER imagined I could get this kind of picture out of a box this small. That's right; although this set may seem huge to some, it truly offers the most performance in the smallest, easiest to set up and use package I have ever seen...
I'd write more but I've got to get back to my Qualia viewing...
Ray
(BTW -- I posted earlier about poor Comcast PQ. Got a serviceman out today, and we traced the incoming signal feed until we tracked down the culprit -- a faulty and unnecessary signal amp. Everything looks very good now; I'll A/B Comcast to DirecTV and see who wins at some point. Didn't kill the "bird" until I was certain that Comcast was going to work...)
For those of you that don't have the Sony stand like me, there is a slot in the middle of the rear at the foot of the tv. This is where a strap snaps in to keep the tv stable in case of an earthquake, which I guess is built in the Sony stand. I bought a strap from Home Depot that can hold up to 300 lbs and slipped it into this slot and wrapped it on a section of my Salamander stand. I suggest this especially if you live in earthquake country like I do.
Can you imagine this monster falling face down. There goes your 13 grand!!
Anybody else see minor "ghosting" from internal reflections? This is extremely tough to see; I noticed it tonight on CSI when there was a dark foreground with a very bright light in the background. I have to say it is fairly trivial. My old Toshiba 57" set was extremely well ISF'ed, and I even lined the inside of the cabinet with black felt cloth. To me it's a minor issue; just wondering if others are noticing the same thing?
Also, one of the impressive things I didn't realize about the set/stand package is just how well the set is locked into place. Once the set drops into place in the recess on top, you install a trim piece over the front edge of the stand; this overlaps the "foot" on the bottom of the TV and holds it down. So, you've got the recess itself, the trim on the front of the stand, and the strap at the rear. Also, I plan to anchor the strap a bit better as it's help in place with three staples.
One more thing (with apologies to Peter Falk); the design of the 006 is really striking, and it's much better looking in person than any photos I've seen can convey.
Never thought I'd have a set like this in my bedroom -- talk about overkill! We'd planned on setting this up in our living room, but we'll need to do some work to accommodate it there. Oh well, I guess there are a lot of things in life worse than being forced to sit in bed, basking in pure QualiaVision...
Ray
Sorry if the prior post was unclear; my point was (supposed to be) that the Toshiba had the "ghosting" issue to a much higher degree than what is present on the Qualia...

My impression at this point is that with a great HD signal this is better than a projector with slide film (its been a while since I've see slide film but you get the idea). I think this is also better than the commercial movies. More detail and the colors are stunning!!!
The set had "Black Enhance" on but no time to experiment.
The popup "Video 6" is still in the upper left corner. Exit does not work and I have not found anything in the manual yet. I will try calling the number in the manual for help unless anyone has any ideas how to turn those popups off.
I would think it should stay on for 10 seconds or so then go away.
I found the split screen can be used to watch a smaller picture for news and "green acres" type SD programs. The Qualia works in this mode great because of its high resolution. This also keeps your from getting too used to the "Movie Effect".
Make sure your qualia is plugged into an UNSWITCHED power conditoner socket so the fan can cool the unit when you turn the system off.

I am getting it through a Qualia store. I live in flyover country so we don't have any Qualia dealers.
They can't give a good explanation for the 5 weeks other than some mumbling stuttering kind of BS that makes absolutely no sense. Fact is the Qualia concierge's are not wired in to the decision makers on high back on Mt. Fuji.
They just seem to be moderately haughty order takers who would even have to hold their nose to sell an lowly XBR to us mere peasants................very much like Mercedes salesmen.
Yea.........as you can see this 5 week crap is burning my arse. Between that and the extra $3k I'm gonna need a six-pack of Vaseline and a spatula.

Neo2005 02-04-05, 09:05 AM My stand is in the design stage and I know that the SONY stand is 16.5 High. To include storage features I would like to make my stand a little higher say 2-3". How do you think that would effect the viewing from say 10 feet when my eye is approx 39-40". Dilbert1 has said that height is critical and I do not want to screw this up.

Neo2005
I had a similar problem with my setup a while back.
With the style of my sofa (primary seating position) I was able to swap out the short screw on legs with longer ones to make up the additional 3". The apron around the base of the sofa conceals the legs.
Although its different than the loveseat that's perpendicular to it, unless someone knew to look, they'd never notice it.

I only said it is important mainly because of the cost, effort, and risk required to move the Qualia to a new stand if you are unhappy. I would suggest placing marks on the wall for the screen size and postit note where the center of the screen would be. You could also take a smaller tv and raise it up to that center height and try watching a movie to see if you have neck strain. The large screen is different than a small screen because you may find yourself moving your head more. A few inches would probably not make much difference but it may be an individual response. Other people here have the set higher and seem happy. Test it out with your family to see if it works for you. Sony has probably selected that height because, on average, it works best.

I'm sorry, I thought to set it at 1080i for all the games. Will the game at 1080i be better than one at 480p?
Only games listed to explicitly support 1080i will actually output 1080i. In the XBox dashboard, you should enable all resolutions that your TV can accept--for the Qualia, that means all of them. In addition, you'll need to tell your XBox that you have a wide-screen set (these menu options only appear if you have the High Definition AV Pack connected), and that you have a Dolby Digital receiver (assuming that you actually do and have the XBox connected to it).
In the case of a 720p game, you will want to have 720p turned on as a viable resolution in the XBox dashboard, and let your TV scale it up (or down) to its native resolution. The XBox will not up-scale a game to a higher resolution than the game supports. It will down-scale to 480i, and frankly I don't know if it will down-scale to 480p or not. When in doubt, look at the back of the box to see what resolutions are supported.
To put it another way, you don't get to choose what resolution(s) the game will display--the game designers have already chosen that for you. What you do get to do is tell the XBox what resolutions your TV is capable of displaying. If you have 480p turned off and 1080i turned on in the Dashboard settings, a 480p game will display at 480i.
jp2 (and kaduku): I don't know if this is something you already knew or not, and I'm not really directing this at you in particular--it's just that I read your response that way and wanted to make sure that no one else read it that way, too.
As for your second question, the 1080i game should indeed have higher resolution and more visible detail than a 480p game. Whether it actually looks or plays better is really dependent on the artists and game designers. I think you'd have a hard time convincing people that the Atari Anthology (1080i) is "better" than Halo 2 (480p). :D

I've notice a couple of people mentioning black crush and I think I know what they may be seeing and a way to correct it. I will post my settings below with the understanding that:
1. I have not had a lot of time to test each of the settings.
2. These settings were adjusted for the source being a htpc connected via a dvi-hdmi cable not any other sources. This has the caveat of different color spaces and may be totally different for a dvd player connected via component or even my d* satellite box connected via dvi-hdmi.
3. I used avia, dve and some basic test patterns from mce 2005 for the basic settings. I used a colorfacts 6000 for adjust the white balance via the test patterns generated directly from colorfacts.
4. In pro mode.
Most of the setting remained at their default values with the exception of Picture: default = 58 I lowered that to 52
Brightness default = 31 I raised that significantly to 47
The combination of those 2 settings allow me to properly view the black bars in avia, dve, and wce 2005. At their default settings, I could not see either of the moving black bars. Keep in mind this may be due to my source and its connection to the 006.
color=33,hue=0,saturation=25 (all default)
color temp.=warm
NR=high
DM=off
Advanced settings:
drcmode=cinemotion
drcpallette custom3 r=40,c=86
both of these settings probably do not have any effect with my setup because the htpc is feeding a 1080i signal.
c bp=on
cs=w
cc=l
dte=off
cw=on
de=m
bc=m
gc=l
grayscale is adjusted via the whitebalance settings. I used the colorfacts to adjust this and as I mentioned before, this performed the best at its default values.
There is still some debate as to whether or not the 006 will accept 1080p/24. On the 004 there is a menu option to display what the input signal is working at. I have not be able to get the 006 to accept a 1080p/24 signal yet and would be interested in any suggestions on how to get this working. If someone has an ISF person getting into the service menu on this set, please ask them if there is any magical way to get the 006 to accept that rate.

Dwayne,
I agree with what you are saying about the xbox setup. However I was warned not to rely on what the game box states but rather confirm its resolution via one of the gaming sites. I also agree with you about the more enjoyable game does not correlate directly to its resolution. I just wanted to check for any motion artifacts on a 1080i games with a lot of movement. Mx unleashed certainly fit the bill!

Mike7200 02-04-05, 10:40 AM Dilbert1 - I don't have a Qualia. I don't even have much hope of seeing one anytime soon in the Pittsburgh area. I can only drool at the thought of what you and the other new owners are experiencing.
I do have a new Sony LCD RP, though, and I ran into the same problem with the Video5, Video6, etc. pop-up on the screen. If you have a button on your remote labeled 'Display', pressing it may be the answer. It was for me.
Great good luck to you with the new set. Please keep posting your impressions for those of us who can only dream about it - at least for the time being.

This can be easily resolved by pressing the "display" button on the remote. The display button actually has two cycles. One press (when there is no popup on screen) will display all info (channel, description, resolution, etc.), that will disappear after ~ 10 seconds. A second press will leave the input (Video 6) and time displayed on screen. If you hit display again, it will disappear.

It took me the extra month to cough up the BS extra $3k those rat bastards are extorting from me....... Once I get the set I am sure the quality will soothe my feathers but making me wait that long is simply adding insult to injury...........
Tell me again how much I'm gonna love this TV.....Give me strength brothers.................
MotorMouth,
Is this really a surprise? The "old" thread had postings there were only 300 006's in the initial shipment (via air?). I don't know whether that's true or not, but one reason people ordered in early January was to lock-in a unit. It's not uncommon that demand for a hot product initially exceeds its supply.
Hang in there, once you get this baby you will be happy and (hopefully) the delay will be a distant memory :)

There is no comparison between the blacks of the 006 vs LCD RPTV's. SXRD blacks are vastly superior, but still not as good as CRT. Still, no current RPTV can match the blacks of SXRD.
I'm sorry to hear that at 10K the SXRD failed in this area.

(nvc) well thats not my concern right now i have people hurt. ill be contacting you soon.
what luck i canteven call qualia they dont open till 12 est and could the tv be posibly damaged this sucks bigtime.
Some of the delivery experiences from hell are troubling, but I don't think this is one of them. Now, everyone, repeat after me, "it's only T.V., it's only T.V.!" Well, actually, it's Qualiavision, which, admittedly, is better than T.V. :D
It's natural that after forking over $15k, we all want our 006's delivered immediately, trust me I was the exact same way! However, Sony has contracted with NVC, and they contract with local delivery companies. Many of us have been extremely pleased with the delivery process. My point is that while I understand "blaming" Sony, because they are ultimately responsible, is it really their fault when there is a traffic accident resulting in injury? I took off from work to accept delivery, believe me I was anxious. So, I understand everyone's frustration that has experienced a hassle with delivery of their 006.
I think some of the unhappiness may be filtering back to NVC. I received a telephone call from NVC earlier this week with questions about the delivery. Was it timely, professional, etc.
Hang in there. The anxiety is not worth it (I know, I know, I already have my 006), but you all will too, hopefully very soon! :)
In my opinion, the 006 is the best picture available. Better than any plasma, DLP, CRT,, D'ILA, I've seen. Of course, I haven't seen everything (who has?) so your mileage may vary.
I can't comment on how it compares to front projectors.
Have no problem with black crush. Its a matter of getting the settings the way you prefer them.
SABAlove 02-04-05, 11:16 AM Neo2005 - My stand is substantially taller than 16.5" (24", I believe) and I find it just fine. I think the sony stand would be too low for my taste/setup/furniture.
But this is such a subjective area, it is impossible to give advice. I think what Dilbert was driving at was the importance of recognizing that the TV is PRETTY LARGE in person, and to factor that into your own personal TV viewing arrangement.
I don't think there is a "right" answer, IMHO.

That's good news then, if Sony SXRD is the best display technology out there today, beating the venerable CRT in all areas of PQ, while offering the advantages of a newer technology, then we can only hope to see more them of them market and various sizes and price points, while maintaining the same quality as the flagship 006. I really want to check out this set.
auditor55/hidefbob,
PQ for HD and DVD playback is overall better than the toshiba 1080p lcos set and sharp 1080p 45" lcd set that I had. The black levels are much better than either one. I have also spent some time watching a calibrated fujitsu plasma and the 006 was a much better overall viewing experience. The color, geometry, BL, and resolution are the best that I've been able to find. Another area inwhich the 006 is better than the toshiba is the stability of the picture. I had some occasional issues with flicker on the toshiba. I have not noticed any of those issues with the sony. A general issue with technology these days is that there are so many configurations and adjustments that are possible that it can be very confusing for most people. ex. dvi to hdmi, hdcp handshaking, component analogue vs. digital connections, interlaced vs. progressive, scaling and deinterlacing, cable vs satellite, etc, etc.
brgds,
jp

I agree completely at this point in time. My comments, thus far, are only from someone who has had the set for 2 days. The good comments are accurate "impressions" and any issues, thus far, are from someone who is still untangling cables.
I think the only thing you can really get from this thread about picture quality is that people seem to be excited about the images when the set is driven from a good HD source.
In time professional reviewers will get their chance.
Dilbert1
Thanks JP2 for your (obviously) educated opinions. I'm also very much looking forward to professional reviewers in all the video mags. I expect we'll be seeing our set as the "cover story" in most of them in the very near future.

I assume anyone buying the Qualia has gone out to look at a 70 inch LCD television. The Qualia 70 inch while being about the same size will look MUCH LARGER IN YOUR HOME. In the store the space and walls change the scale of the set. At home the TV will look like a canary in a match box. Ok, that is an exaggeration but your (certainly your wife's) comment or expression should be recorded for a good laugh. My ceiling in the entertainment room is about 14 feet. You probably will feel like it is a movie theater. In fact, it may make you think it would not be a bad idea to have a small set in the bedroom for the news.

I had the Pioneer Elite 730hd, arguably one of the top CRT RPTVs. I have the Sony 34XBR910, the fine pitch model, also arguably one of the top CRT direct view sets.
The Qualia's detail is FAR BETTER than either on HD sources (haven't really watched that much DVD material on it thus far, although the Fifth Element superbit was spectacular on the 006). I'd rank them as 006 clearly the best, followed by the 34xbr910 (excellent picture, but darker, not as detailed, and obviously much smaller screen so much less WOW impact), and in 3rd place the Pioneer.
Of course, there are things yet unknown about the 006: For example, how long will the bulb really last (a 200w UHP), and does watching the set at high levels such as in the Vivid mode, or in any mode with the "picture" setting nearly maxed out, decrease the life expectancy of the bulb? Also, will any problems (God forbid) develop that no one has seen as yet?
It is somewhat reassuring that this is probably 2nd generation SXRD, since the 004 front projector has been available for a while already, but this is the first iteration of a RPTV version, so who knows what to expect long run? So far so (very) good.
For those who are wondering, removing the set's speakers does make the set appear to be considerbly smaller, so that should improve your WAF (it's still big, especially if you are not used to looking at a large RPTV). I previously had a 64" inch set so the change going to 70" is not much for me.
I still think a stand that is taller than about 16 or 17" will be problematic for many folks' families - at least, I guess, until they get used to looking up a little from a seated position. Of course, it's all personal preference when you come down to it.
It's great to see so many videophiles pile on so many accolades on this TV.
Dilbert1 02-04-05, 12:20 PM I have a DVI/HDMI cable and would like to use that cable for a connection to my PC. So far, my connection from the DVD and Sat Receiver has been component.
Is there any concensus on picture quality from component to DVI/HDMI? Is there a visable difference for using 4 meter cables??
I have some more comments about DVD but no time right now.
Dilbert1
Does anybody have a copy of the manual yet for a download...???
Neo2005 02-04-05, 01:01 PM Yo Dilbert1 thanks for the reply....I guess I could always raise the chairs as was suggested. I would love to hear from a few folks who do use a taller stand and please include your seat and or eye height, along with the distance from the screen.

Here's my .02 regarding the picture quality of the Qualia 006 vs. other sets and technologies...
PLASMA: These sets just don't come close to the Qualia. True black and shadow detail -- in particular -- are vastly superior on the Q. Color rendition and saturation is far more accurate and lifelike. Absolute sharpness without artifacts or blotchiness: the Q wins again. Freedom of motion stutter or blur; the plasmas all seem to exhibit this to some degree; it is absent on the Q. One huge advantage of the Qualia is the superiority of it's scaling of 480i sources, which humbles even the Fujitsu. 480i on the Q is emminently watchable; with the plasmas I find it intolerable. I could go on, but I can't think of a single area where a plasma can touch the Qualia -- excepting size, of course. My experience with plasmas has been with the last two generations of Fujitsu 50", the current Sony XBR 50", and the latest Pioneer Elite 50".
CRT: my experience here is varied. I've owned several generations of Toshiba RPTVs; all were ISFed and had the cabinet lined with black felt to minimize internal reflections. I've had a DWIN 700 running through a Faroudja DVP-2200 @ 800x600 on a six-foot screen. I've spent time in a lot of high-end setups, from the theater at Dolby Labs to hanging out with an installer friend when he calibrates his installs. I love CRT, and have always regarded it as the standard. I've never considered any digital viewing technology (DLP, LCOS, Plasma, LCD) for critical viewing.
So, I have to admit some surprise that I am so happy with my Qualia006. Some things I like in comparison to CRT: I can view the set in something other than a very dark room, without feeling as though I'm sacrificing PQ. Convergence, focus, and alignment of the optical system is a complete non-issue so far. I'm not sure how Sony accomplished this in a RPTV format, but the projection part of this set (including the screen) are truly extraordinary. The color gamut on the Qualia seems broader than a CRT, particularly as regards red. The colors are vivid without appearing garish or exaggerated in any way. The Q's blacks and shadow detail are quite good; this may be the only area where a CRT could definitively beat the Q. But the Q's performance in this area is quite acceptable to me. I mentioned earlier that if a superb CRT scored 100 in this area, then the Qualia was a 90. After watching last night I think i can stick by that assessment. The blacks are ultimately not as rich, dark, and velvety as with CRT, and I think the Q loses a very small amount of shadow detail. Conversely, with even a small amount of room lighting this advantage of CRT -- especially in a front projection system -- would be lost. This is an example of the Qualia being a better performer in the real world, which is something that is very important to me. I don't want to be off in a dark room, alone, watching my setup -- I want to share it with my friends and family, most of whom don't want to do the "darkroom" treatment every time they want to just watch TV.
OK, so maybe it was five-cents worth! To all who have their sets, enjoy! To all who are still awaiting delivery: it's awfully tough waiting, but this set is worth it. And, thanks again to my wife, who loves that I have "hobbies" and supports my fanaticism...

1. I've never had any experience hooking my computer up to the 006.
2. As others have posted, I don't believe there is a significant viewing advantage when utilizing super expensive cables. IMHO, the basic Monster brand cables should be as pleasing to your eyes as the ultra-expensive THX ones. I also feel the same way about the Voltage Stabilizer, however, YMMV.
3. Personal preference. Most DVD's and HD is encoded in 5.1.
4. You can purchase a DVHS player today, Blu-Ray DVD is not yet available.
jordb2k4 02-04-05, 03:45 PM Hey guys newb here and I wanted to talk about the Qualia briefly. I might be the only one here (haven't read every post) that has actually seen the 006 playing Blu-Ray Discs. I had a chance to attend a seminar I believe it was the first time BR was shown in Texas and I have to say you aint seen nothing yet. I got to see a demo of Lawrence of Arabia half the screen was standard DVD ( a VERY good standard I might add) the other half was of course Blu Ray. The difference was pitiful really and I also saw the Spiderman 2 trailer and it was like I had never seen it before or something. You guys with 006's should be very proud because it won't be long till you get to see what these babies can do. I want one but I'm too poor  lol.

My Chicane stand (pictured in previous posts) is a bit higher than the Sony stand. My viewing distance is 8'. The center of the screen is a few inches higher than straight on viewing, but after lots of extended viewing I haven't found it to be the slightest bother, nor has anyone else who has watched the TV in my home. I'm sure there is a threshold you don't want to cross, but my setup isn't over the line. If you want, I can measure the top of my Chicane stand to give you an idea of how high it is from the floor.

Huh?? Please re-read what I said - you misunderstood. The intent of my response is to say that the Qualia 006 EXCELS in the blacks. It has the best shadow detail of any RPTV on the market today. CRT's are likely to be the best at displaying more shadow detail than ANY consumer-priced digital display for awhile. But the Qualia 006 has excellent blacks and has not left me wanting for more - not at all a failure in this area.

I like what I'm reading about this set, but the black level issues concern me.
As I have stated in other posts, when the set is adjusted correctly, the blacks are NOT crushed and the shadow detail is better than any other digital display technology I have seen to date. Proper adjustment is the key. DVE can fool you, depending on your DVD player. The settings on the DVD player's input to the TV may not apply to your STB or ATSC tuner. The other inputs may need to be tweaked the old fashioned way - by eye to your personal taste. It would be great if test signals could be occasionally transmitted on cable and ATSC so we could make accurate adjustments. I'd gladly get up at 3am to make those tweaks if I knew the signals were being transmitted. Probably not gonna happen.

I've lived with my 006 for almost 3 weeks and am very accustomed to the look. I stopped by Good Guys again this morning and looked at every HD set on display - plasma, LCD, DLP, D-ILA, CRT. The SXRD beats them all, hands down. Better than Sony and Fujistu's more expensive plasmas which was a surprise. This $13K looks better than the $19K plasma with a smaller screen. Not that the Qualia 006 is a bargain, but considering the competition - I think it's worth the money.

With the center of the 006 at 43 1/2" and height of the eye with the average furniture at 39-40" this stand (Sony) already puts it about 3-4" above eye height. If one was to go to a stand of 24" you would have the set center point aprox. 11-12" above your eye sitting on avg. seating. I think the distance from the set to seating position would affect this --with farther back having less of an angle up. Any thoughts?
