View Full Version : QUALIA 006 Owner's Thread
Penton-Man 02-01-06, 09:28 PM Wonder how many posts (out of 10K+) make mention of J.A., T&A, or other various and sundry directional requests???
Qualians appreciate ALL the finer things in life!
And by “Qualians”, I’m just not referring to 006 owners but, all regular followers of this thread.
Even though nobody has stated it…………..
I will now for the record on the page of our 10,000 post milestone.
I believe that as a prerequisite to affording a TeeVee as expensive as this, everyone here must be extremely successful at their chosen profession (and exhibit fine video taste :D ) so on this momentous occasion……………..
Kudos to all you guys for a productive life endeavor. It’s a pleasure to be associated with all of you.
May we all now live long enough to enjoy the fruits of our labor (one being of course our 006’s). Zee wife tells me that recently I've been "pushing the envelope" on this.
Zechman 02-01-06, 10:52 PM So since this is the Official Qualia 006 Owners' Thread,
shouldn't we now call off the milestone celebration and wait until we hit 13000 posts instead . . . ?
If anyone asks why, we'll just chalk it up to "jet fuel" or something . . . .
:D :D :D

BenDover 02-02-06, 12:04 AM ok, it happened to me. My Q is defective. about a 6 weeks ago i noticed thin vertical green lines along the entire width of the screen. they are spaced 1" apart.(the picture can still be seen though).i called sony. they got me in contact with a repair facility. long story short, a tech came and looked at the problem. sony later told him what the problem likely could be. something called a "Q box". it's about an 800.00 part. the tech just came here to replace it (along with a new bulb). after replacing the part, we fired up the tv. same problem. oh no, the disappointment. now he says it's what he suspected from the get go. the light engine. now i must wait another 3 weeks or so before the part comes in and gets installed. this is what i call getting a free lamp the hard way!
Sorry to hear of your Q's demise, but glad to hear it is being taken care of...BUT, no Q for the Superbowl???
Now that we know how much a "Q Box" costs (I suspect this is the video processing electronics), can you find out how much the light engine costs?

the tech had a cost list in front of him. the light engine costs 1700.00

wow...so an upgrade to 1080p would, i'm just speculating here, probably include an upgrade to the "Q Box" and the light engine (although I'm not quite sure why they would have to upgrade the light engine now that I think about it...), totaling $2,500!
i know, i know, there isn't any upgrade planned unless someone well connected with Sony wishes it...here's a thought, we can have Penton and editor58 put some pressure on Sony :D
i know, i know, there isn't any upgrade planned unless someone well connected with Sony wishes it...here's a thought, we can have Penton and editor58 put some pressure on Sony :DWith all due respect to P & E, I think it might require more of a "Tony Soprano" touch to ever get Sony to come around on this point. Who knows, though -- maybe Penton will make 'em an offer they couldn't refuse...
Hmmm ... 10017, not too bad but I missed all the earlier festivities!!! What a great thread and mini-community!!!
I think the jury remains out, as in Outer Mongolia, on whether, when or for how much Sony will allow a Q upgrade to 1080p. I will believe it when I see it and not before. But I remain hopeful.
Cheers!

What ever happened to the Qualian who volunteered to write a "request"
to Sony for a 006 1080p upgrade ? We were then going to make it available for everyone to printout, sign, and send to Sony.
This would be a great PR move for Sony to be able to publicize the fact they are making upgrades available for their high end (meaning big buck equipment).
So many times video and audiophiles buy state-of-the-art equipment and soon find it obsolete or the performance exceeded by updated equipment from the same manufacturer.
The Qualia 004, Theta Casablanca and a few others being the exception as the manufacturer is providing upgrades.
How many manufacturers stepped up like Toshiba on their 57HLX82 LCoS tv that was not quite ready for prime time and Toshiba is buying them back?

I doubt it will ever happen and it is for the very reason you speak about, they take this for granted: "So many times video and audiophiles buy state-of-the-art equipment and soon find it obsolete or the performance exceeded by updated equipment from the same manufacturer."
That being said, I don't think it is a big deal given that 1) no content at 1080p and not likely to happen any time soon; 2) unknown whether there will be any perceivable difference between something native 1080p and something encoded at 1080i...the deinterlacing may result in the exact 1080p original signal...at least in certain embodiments.
divedude 02-02-06, 09:25 PM Mini Dive went crusin' today. He likes the open air, so he took his mask and snorkel off . . .
This would be a great PR move for Sony to be able to publicize the fact they are making upgrades available for their high end (meaning big buck equipment).I firmly believe Sony will offer a 1080P upgrade sometime between now and Christmas. It will be called "the Sony KDS-R70XBR1", and -- if Sony doesn't shoot for too low a price point -- maybe they can incorporate all that Qualia Goodness, throw in 1080P capable inputs, and keep the whole thing under $8K...
Hey, it COULD happen!
:D
And -- if they want to make us Qualians loyal for life -- maybe they'll offer a nice discount certificate for Qualia owners who buy another 70" SXRD set...
Another "What If?" -- wonder if anyone has installed a Ruby into a RPTV configuration? That could be killer with a 80 to 90-inch screen; wonder how big a hole-in-the-wall I'd need for a setup using a mirror (to shorten the throw depth)? Enquiring Minds® want to know! :)

brt3,
Kind of large, but if you are going to use a mirror, you just need a hole in the floor. Which is going to make it a little difficult for us here in Texas, since we all have concrete floors. Or you could just shine it down through the ceiling, but that might require some cutting too. Or you could shine it from the side and reflect it off the mirror. Or maybe a couple of mirrors to get the image back in the right direction.
Now I'm starting to see images bouncing all around the room and it is bringing back memories of the 60's and 70's :D

Or maybe a KDL-V70XBR1 to hang on the wall for even less.
Now I'm starting to see images bouncing all around the room and it is bringing back memories of the 60's and 70's :DWhoa, Dude!
Actually, back in the good old days (of CRT) there were quite a few installs like this. Though you can shoot a Front Projector straight-on in a RPTV configuration, this takes too much room for most people. I think WSR had something set up using a Front Projector in a RPTV configuration, either in their HQ or one of their reviewers home theater setups. The installs I've seen actually mount the Projector on the floor or ceiling in a somewhat-vertical orientation, and bounce from a single primary mirror onto the screen. Stewart used to make special screen material for Rear-Projection applications. Not sure what the potential lens configurations are for the Ruby, but this would be one killer app if it worked...
Yeah, I'm crazy -- but that's just the way my mind works. I love the idea of a large screen and spectacular image with no apparent equipment hogging up the room...

brt3,
OK, start the building, I would like a 90" model. Now back to my flashback
brt3 -- OK, start the building, I would like a 90" model. Now back to my flashback :cool:Hmm... Now you got me thinkin' about viewing distances. Let's see: 70" screen @ 10 feet viewing distance = 1.714 ratio (what I'm using -- and loving -- on the Q006)...
So, if I want a twelve-foot viewing distance, I'd want an 84-inch screen...
14-foot viewing distance gives a 98-inch screen...
So, make mine 100-inches, please!
:D
thesirjay 02-03-06, 08:42 AM It has been a great ride and I know this thread has alot more posts in it :). We have all tried to make the Q experience alot more enjoyable (and I would say with quite alot of success). Thanks a ton to all of you I know I couldn't have pulled the trigger without your keen reviews of just what the Q is and I have been very happy with my Q! This thread will still be here even if they do decide to stop making the last of the Qs (if they ever stop making lamps I am guessing we will all manage to find a solution to that as well :) ). Superbowl Sunday is coming the day our Qs get to truly rule the world roost.
My 100th post goes out to DiveDude and Penton for continued recovery. I am not a church going kinda guy but my prayers are with you!
Also, I would like to thank everyone who frequents this thread. It is, without question, the best.
After 7 months of slow construction the end is now in sight. I ordered my Q and set up delivery for March 18th (expected completion of new room).
It is almost like my house is pregnant and baby Q is on the way! There is afterall a new bulge protruding (from the back). ;)

i just had a "Q box" and lamp installed in my qualia. (i still need light engine.fine green lines running thru the screen vertically.. backordered till feb 21st) knowing my Q as well as i do, it had a great picture and looked alot like those at my local hi end stores, but now i can't believe the difference in my picture! using my same settings as before parts were replaced, the picture is just incredible! the blacks are blacker than i've EVER seen them. the color gamut seems to have expanded. it's as if i'm in "wide" mode even though i'm not. picture overall more 3D/smooth. i expected a change in brightness because of the bulb. i did not expect the other positive results. maybe it's due to a different brand bulb or maybe it comes from the new Q box the tech installed. who knows. i'm just pleased with what i'm seeing. interesting.

Ron,
Your thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated and I am mostly recovered from my surgery last week. So with your approval, lets focus the Q healing power on PM :)
You are getting you Q almost one year to the day after mine was delivered. Congratulations :D And another one on your 100th :D
Don't forget to send picture of your new delivery ;) PS. I hope you have 4 storks lined up for the delivery. :o

hifi59,
Sure hope the new light engine fixes your Q. I and several others have noted that a new bulb does wonders, I guess it is just that over a period of time the bulb fades and we don't really notice. The good thing is that for $300 we get a new 006 every so often :D You said a different brand bulb. What brand was it?

just speculation that it may be a different bulb.

MotorMouth777 02-04-06, 03:06 AM I'm getting all tingly and such just thinking of the Superbowl on the Q. Last year I was still waiting on some slow boat to deliver the second wave of happiness.
Can't say I worry one whit about 1080p inputs since to my feeble old eyes the picture is still simply stunning at a clean 720 input or 1080i inputs. Hell I am hooked on the Sci-Fi channel and SD looks decent enough for me to not nit pic even that picture. Maybe I am just a simpleton but to me whatever this monster is doing inside with its electronics is just fine by me.
MotorMouth777 02-04-06, 03:13 AM CRAP
My Sony 975 now has a terminal case of constipation and won't even recognize there is a DVD inside. I had to power on off on off on off push the open close open close open close open and finally apply a generous amount of "Percussive Maintenance" to the rat bastard so it would have a bowel movement and eject my DVD. So now its back to the retailer to see if there is anything they want to do for me. My guess is they will simply tell me to pound sand and that I can continue to enjoy this POS DVD player.
Any suggestions for a cheap replacement as I don't want to spend much on a DVD now with Blu-Ray so tantalizing close. Imagine, dropping 13 large on a TV with not a second thought and now I am wussing around like some old woman over a $300 player..............pathetic isn't it.
divedude 02-04-06, 03:57 PM Here is one that may give ya'll a smile.
Three docs go shooting at ducks. The Radiologist shoots one down and says looks like a duck, suggests clinical confirmation and takes the rest of the day off. The Internal medicine doc shoots one and says could be a duck, could be a turkey, or maybe a chicken so lets run some tests and he goes to play golf. And finally the Surgeon steps up and starts blasting at the sky and says must be some ducks around here somewhere.....

The only additions that I would make would be………….
The Radiologist would say that “it APPEARS to look like a duck.”
The internist would run some tests and prescribe Prednisone even before any results come back….and then run more tests after the results of the first set of tests came back.
The surgeon (if he were an Orthopedist) would only go duck hunting with a fully automatic Kaloshnikov.

Oppo Digital - OPDV971H
MSRP $200.
Run 480i into one of the component inputs on the back of 006 with a cheap set of component cables, you can also try 1080i in via a DVI/HDMI cable if you happen to have one lying around.

not sure divedude. i'm just trying to understand why my picture is much better than before. not just brighter. could it be a different bulb manufacturer or is it the Q box the tech installed.? i swear , as good as the picture was prior to my problem, it is now better than i've ever seen it before. i don't believe it's due to just the brightness of having a new bulb installed. it's got to be a different make bulb or the new Q box in my opinion. BTW, i had 2100 hours on my old bulb in a 10 month period.

hifi59,
When the repairman comes back, ask him if there have been any mods to the Q box he put in. And ask if it was a Sony bulb that was put in. Maybe he has some idea why the TV looks better. My bet is still on the new bulb being brighter :)
Can you take a picture of the green stripes so we can see what they look like. Thanks.
Zechman 02-05-06, 10:49 AM I think it's entirely possible (maybe even likely) that Sony has improved the bulb in some way since a year ago.
But just using basic logic, I'd think it's more likely that the new Q-box is an improvement over the old one.
--Dwayne
I speculate it's just the new bulb. Why would Sony make improvements to the bulb or Q-box over the short course of one year, if those two items only are used in the Q006, a product in which development for future models has stopped?
Just MHO.

I don't think there has been any change in the bulb. The new bulb I got from Sony looks exactly like the one I took out and like the one I purchased from Sony when I brought the TV. I do believe that putting in a new bulb will make the TV look like new if it is replacing a bulb with 2000 or more hours on it. From my experience the drop-off of brightness is so gradual from day to day that a person doesn't notice it, until it goes noticeably darker towards the end. The WOW factor of a new bulb will depend on how much brightness the replaced bulb had lost, and of course the perception of the viewer.
It could be possible that Sony has improved the Q-box. I would like to know if such an improvement would make it worth paying to upgrade.

Why would Sony make improvements to the bulb or Q-box over the short course of one year, if those two items only are used in the Q006, a product in which development for future models has stopped? The ONLY reason there would be a difference in the Q-box would be if they've based the upcoming "Regular Sony" 70" SXRD on the Qualia chassis. If this is the case then the possibility exists for some type of upgrade path, perhaps even to full 1080P from the input jacks to the pixels on-screen. Sorry for playing the "What If?" game, as I fully realize that usually doens't pan out. As in, "What If Napoleon Had a B-52 at Waterloo?". Hell, it's all French to me...

brt3,
Sorry, it just slipped out :o
Considering the lack of problems and complaints about the 006, I doubt that Sony will spend time reengineering things that work. Considering they won't give us the 1080p upgrade (woops) that some are asking for. Now it would be nice if they made a bulb that would last longer.
divedude 02-05-06, 12:45 PM jb007,
If I remember right, you have the SONY HC1. How do you like it by now? How does it do in low light? I am thinking of getting one prior to visiting the sharks in July.
[IMG]here is a pic of the green lines i have in on my Qualia. the image is cropped and enhanced so you can see the lines better. they are spaced about 1" apart. they are not as bold as they appear here. in fact, about 50-60% of the time, i can't see them unless i look really hard. they are always appearant against a solid color backround.
here's another shot of green lines
But just using basic logic, I'd think it's more likely that the new Q-box is an improvement over the old one.

one thing that i did notice was that the old q box had a 2 or 3 inch wide black piece of cloth like material wrapped around a rather short ribbon cable which is part of the q box. it was not removeable. he said it was a ground and that the ribbon cable on the new q box does not require it. while he was inserting the new box, i tried to remove the black wrap. it just ripped apart. it felt like a magnet or ferrite was in it. not sure. hard to describe.

Can you see the lines with the OSD? If you can and Q-box was replaced, definitely a defective light engine.

hifi59,
Looks like your Q has been put in jail  Sorry this had to happen, but especially before the Super Bowl. :(
Penton-Man 02-05-06, 03:57 PM The ONLY reason there would be a difference in the Q-box would be if they've based the upcoming "Regular Sony" 70" SXRD on the Qualia chassis.
If hifi59 purchases a Sony Blu-ray player when they debut,
And, hooks it up to his 006 (via HDMI) to output 1080p
And, the display thingee in the right upper corner of the screen reads….
1080p
Penton-Man will make an immediate call to Sony complaining of green lines he is seeing on his screen and be asking for a new Q-box. ;)

jb007,
If I remember right, you have the SONY HC1. How do you like it by now? How does it do in low light? I am thinking of getting one prior to visiting the sharks in July.
I continue to enjoy the Sony HC1 HDV Camcorder. It takes beautiful video. In low light the video is good, but not great, similar to what you see on an HD television series on one of the networks.
For the money, the quality of the video can't be beat IMHO.

MSRP $200.
Run 480i into one of the component inputs on the back of 006 with a cheap set of component cables, you can also try 1080i in via a DVI/HDMI cable if you happen to have one lying around.

the oppo wold be a good choice, however, only if connected via hdmi.
the component outs are not known to give a good picture as it bypasses all the good stuff in the processing circuitry.

Look for a special that's been running on INHD (I think); it's a great show that details the "behind the scenes" operations of the aquarium, including the recent Great White story...

Anyone else thinking that -- if we really want to end drug abuse -- we should run huge billboards in every major city with a very close and detailed head shot of Keith Richards (every pore and line sharply rendered) with the simple byline, "Don't Do Drugs"...

I am going to watch it to find out what kind of code black they have. I have heard two different things it could be.

thesirjay 02-05-06, 11:16 PM Not really having a preference for either team going in I would have to say that the refs determined that game. If I were a seahawk fanatic I would be considering a zebra hunt in africa as therapy. The goal line call was reasonable - too close to be sure on. But the endless take aways just didn't seem justified IMO I wish they had been a bit more even and left the steelers with some stuff to really gripe about. Heck they even penalized the QB for tackling (although lol I think the QB was pretty surprised his block ended up hitting the guy with the ball). I found myself rooting a bit for seattle just because I thought they got a raw deal on those big calls - the calls alone were an easy 21 point shift.
Btw what was the code black? I am actually going to be doing some work on education for hospital employees on the proper way to use protective gear in scenarios like ebola, avian influenza etc so I was quite tempted to catch that episode. They had alot of extra infections up in Canada back in the SARS episode due to inadequate knowledge on how to use their gear.

I detest cliffhangers, and the addition of the dramatic "drum soundtrack" to what is normally a slightly less sensationalistic show. Guess they wanted to capitalize on Super Sunday, snare a bunch of new viewers, and get them to "tune in next week -- same Bat Time, same Bat Channel"...

Hi Guys, mind if I lurk here awhile?
Hi my name is Tony and I'm so tickled to finally find a forum site that has some dedicated threads to the 006. But after quickly browsing just a small part of this massive thread (over 10K posts!) I realize I'll have to use the search tool to glean the thread for answers to any questions I might have.
I'm one of those crazy early adopters the magazines keep talking about who always overpays for the latest in technology. Although I'm new to the forum I actually received my 006 back in April of '05. Other than a few small problems here and there, I'm very pleased with the set and as a few of you have already mentioned...WHAT A WAY TO WATCH THE SUPERBOWL!
I'm not as technically savvy as I should be, but I'd be happy to answer any simple questions I can to contribute.
I'll try to post a pic of my baby. I have noticed that there aren't any posted pictures in the forum so I'm guessing I'll have to post a linK? Anyway here it goes I'll give it a try.
OPPS...never mind. I've tried it and I've been told it won't let me post IMG files until I have 5 posts under my belt. I'll try to post it later.
tfire, welcome to the forum. Most here have had the Q006 for about one year as well. Due to the fact these sets have been relatively trouble free, posts with issues and questions are sporadic. You can always check the first post in this thread for links to pictures, reviews, tips, etc., and a link to owner brt3's excellent Qualia 006 page that contains a myriad of links and information about the Q006.

Anyone else have any comments on this? I was really less than impressed by the PQ of the Superbowl itself; though I realize you can't compare live footage to something shot in a studio, I was somewhat surprised by the PQ of the game...
Penton-Man 02-06-06, 12:37 PM No comment regarding PQ………….VUI (Viewing Under the Influence).
My thoughts on the game itself and the Super Bowl Champions………
1. MVP goes to the referee (Bill Leary).
2. WORST rendition of the National Anthem that I’ve ever heard.
Pittsburg played like crap and didn’t deserve to win the game but, alas all is well in football-dom as they DO deserve to be Super Bowl Champions as they had a far tougher row to hoe to get there.
Plus, you can’t find a nicer owner than Dan Rooney these days.
P.S. Hope I didn’t screw up the spelling on anybody’s name above.
Hmmm... do I want this?

BenDover 02-06-06, 01:42 PM The Superbowl looked spectacular on my Q through my Cablevision provider; surprised others didn't think it was good quality.
I will refrain from commenting on the opinions of the game given thus far, although I strongly disagree with them; I agree only with the Steelers could have played better football, but in the end the played good enough to win.
hifi, did you try monkeying around with your cable connections to the Q, trying different inputs (e.g, hdmi vs. component, etc.) and/or bringing up the memory stick input to see if the green lines were present no matter what? i know you mentioned the OSD, but that is just a transparent overlay and i'm not sure that would isolate the light engine.
Well, since I got my Q delivered on April 14, 2005, I guess I should call and get a Lamp. Do I still just call 1-877-qualia3? I guess that I can say I noticed that the SuperBowl was not as Bright as I remember other games. Will they ask for Lamp hours? I guess that some say we are not supposed to get to this menu.
Thanks for the welcome. I know I'm a newbie here but I have to say FOX NFL HD PQ seems better than ABC. Even compared to Monday Night Football, which was good, but not as vivid as FOX. At first I wondered if maybe ABC was broadcasting in 720P but no, my box says 1080i.
Just catch tonight's episopde of "24" and you'll see how good FOX's HD signal is. At least as viewed on my Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD unit, with Time Warner service.
And although I'm a Steelers Fan, Big Ben's hometown Findlay Ohio is where I live, I think I'm gonna hurl if I hear one more announce say,"The Bus is in the Garage!"
MPSAN: I had a lamp burnout at about two months into ownership and I was pleased and also dismayed at the service Qualia offered. They promptly supplied three different service centers to come at look at the set. But each one I called said they were not qualified on the Qualia sets. In embarrasment they sent me two replacement lamps N/C. The swap out is very easy. That was the number that I called in June and they took care of me.
Since Sony support for Qualia is on the decline, I don't know how much longer that will be the case.
Thank you, tfire.
I hope that they now just send them out...I sure don't want anyone installing it for me! This is the first that I have heard of this.

tfire, if your Q was indicating 1080i for ABC, it seems to me that you have your 8300HD box set up to convert everything to 1080i output. the scaling/deinterlacing of the 8300HD is nowhere near the level of the Q's...you should configure your 8300HD box to output native format so that if the show is being broadcast in 720p, it passes the show along unaltered to the Q, etc.
Again, I was actually quite impressed with the ABC Superbowl broadcast (other than some glitches in the beginning when aspect was properly set at my local cable headend and when there was an audio dropout...but this happened pregame, thank the Q gods). I observed very little compression artifacts in my viewing experience, even with the fast action.
I believe you're right Ben...I'm pretty sure that I do have everything set up to 1080i. I must admit though, I didn't check my output through my info bar on the 006... I was looking at the output indicator on my cable box.
I made the adjustment because I was getting an annoying hesitation...almost a staticy blink...everytime I switched channels. After reseting my box, it was gone. It could be my cable box but I don't know. I've already replaced it twice for other reasons.
I'll look at it again tonight when I get home. I can see I'm gonna gain a WORLD of experience here.
Thanks.

On my box you have to go into a setup menu to change the output; since it's not easily accessible this is a pain. I liked my old Sony/DirecTV setup, where you could switch the output resolution settings directly via the remote...
Riddle me this: if I were to install a CableCard into my Qualia, would it automatically send native resolution to the "Q-box" or whatever drives the display? I would hope/guess this would be the case; maybe this is one way to eliminate this problem. Though I realize there are other compromises with CableCard, it would likely be the way to go from a PQ standpoint.
Wonder if Comcast is any better at getting these things to work; I tried to have them install a CableCard when I first bought my Qualia, but they could never get the thing to work (three different install attempts over a week or so)...

as i understand it, yes, since a cablecard is simply "authorizing" the content (i.e., doing the QAM decoding and any necessary decryption of premium content) whereas the TV's own circuitry would then have to process the broadcast bitstream.
others here have observed that the PQ when using the cablecard may be slightly better and i imagine it was for this very reason.
are you saying that your comcast box doesn't allow you to pass the native resolution through automatically? that sux!

That is correct - the Comcast boxes don't pass native resolution and require you to do that manually. I actually switched my Motorola 3412 box to output 720p and I thought the HD quality was the best I had ever seen for a live football game on either ABC or ESPN (both transmit 720p). I loved all the HD commercials (picture quality, not necessarily content, although quite a few were entertaining).

I loved all the HD commercials (picture quality, not necessarily content, although quite a few were entertaining). The ad for GoDaddy.com was pretty funny, in that it made fun of last year's "Nipple-gate" controversy and the FCC. I heard that ABC turned down 14 different versions of the ad before approving the final version, which is actually pretty tame. They have the version they wanted to run online; it made we want to run out and ask for directions... :D ;) :D

Sorry to go so far OT, but anyone who marvels at MegaHugeBigWave Surfing should know that Maverick's is on, and they're expecting FORTY-FOOT waves!
Here's a link to the live webcast; (http://www.mediazone.com/channel/mavericks/jsp/index.jsp) let's hope someone films this in HD, as the weather is supposed to be perfect, warm, and clear...

Remember Keiko, the Whale? Anyway we have been to a lot of them places!
Anyone know when INHD will have MBA again?
Also, DD, I think you are on Netflix. Have a good surprise...
We sent a DVD back Saturday and today they sent me "Just Like Heaven". Great, it does not even release 'til tomorrow!
mpsan,
I give up, what is a Keiko-cam?
Save it for when you ask directions. :D
I liked the Bud one where the little Pony tried to move the wagon!!
Well, my thinking was that Keiko was the star of "Free Willy."
Man, I could REALLY expound upon the above in other ways. :D
Thanks for the welcome DiveDude!
Mivi Dives got a Bitchin RP TV! I've noticed over the last few post pages that MiniDive is a man of many different moods but not many words.

Alright... that's post #5...
Now I can try to post my pict from post #1. Hopefully this will work, every forum is different about posting picts.

That's a very impressive looking enclosure. The center speaker looks good up top. Did you have it custom built? How is the air circulation around the 006?
Mini Dive is ready for the big waves with his longboard . . .MiniDive looks surprisingly "wrinkle-free" in that photo. He should start hanging out with Laird and the guys! Until that time you should rent Riding Giants (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389326/) for him...

Dive... I live a couple of hours away from one of the largest Amish communities in the US, in Berlin, Ohio. They built exquisite entertainment centers. I am also in the furniture business and work with over 20 different families who built me various types of furniture, from bedrooms, to dinettes, to just about anything made from wood. My unit is a standard 4 pc unit slightly modified to fit the 006 dimensions. The cabinet is open in the back allowing for ample ventilation. All pcs sit on large castors that allow me to pull the unit away from the wall without busting a kidney.
It's the first time I've had more storage than I could fill.
The only problem with Amish and entertainment centers is that you have to tell them exactly the way you want it because they have no point of refrence for any of the features they build. (not too many coal burning Qualias out there)
tfire,
Very nice! How do you access the wires going into the back of the Q?

Very nice :)
And not much need to harness it up to a team. I grew up about 15 miles from an Amish community in Kansas called Yoder. The Amish are excellent craftsmen and can build some nice buggies.
RonB63...
It's simple there are three major cabinets and all are on individual large one way castors. The right cabinet holds all of my components, I usually pull that one out more often as it seems I'm always fiddling with something back there. The left cabinet holds a spare receiver for now, until I get my Sony Lifestyle home theater PC, which will fit in there. The center holds the TV and the media underneath. Wire management becomes more of a trick as I need to have longer cables for everything. (and as you all know 12 ft HDMI to HDMI cables aren't cheap)
As for my Amish friends, I actually bought a used buggy last year from one of my builders. (I wanted to use it for display outside my store) He sold it to me cheap $400 because he said I'd need to put alot of money into it to make it roadworthy again. I had to remind him..."Samuel...I don't ever intend to drive the darn thing!"
They are very a different people, Sometimes they really seem out in left field, but I respect them for their hard work ethic and there rock solid convictions.

My 2 cents about new bulb. I did not like the look when I first installed my bulb, it gave my picture a washed out look. It did finally settled down after 50 to 60 hours of use, just in time for the Superbowl. So just a heads up to all planning to change their bulb for the first time, It will not give you that brand new look, at least not for me. The picture now looks great like it was when I first turned it on.
FOX NFL HD PQ seems better than ABC. Even compared to Monday Night Football, which was good, but not as vivid as FOX. At first I wondered if maybe ABC was broadcasting in 720P but no, my box says 1080i.
I agree totally, I was not impressed with the HD feed from ABC, though the commercials looked awesome. :D
Thank you for the heads up, Kaduku. I started thinking about the new lamp as it would be a pain for the old one to go out with no way to get a new on "real Fast".

Guys,
You never know when your bulb will go out, so it is a really good idea to have a spare. You can get a free one from Sony, otherwise they only cost $300. And you know you are going to eventually need it. I know I would not want to be without my 006. And if I was bulbless, Mini Dive would go Evil Twin on me
Just an FYI. When the Sony tech gave me a new lamp , he took a microfiber cloth and cleaned the glass plate that the lamp shines through. looking at the cloth, it was quite dirty. the old lamp was dirty too. you can easily clean the glass plate yourself by reaching into the left where the lamp goes. i used a dentists mirror to inspect the glass plate. corners were especially dirty. BTW, the tv isn't exposed to any excessive dust. as i'm sure most of you know, be careful not to touch glass with fingers.

BenDover 02-07-06, 09:29 PM I have a spare lamp, I think I ordered it before my Q even arrived for the simple reason that the bulb can go at any given time, without notice.
that being said, what has concerned me from the beginning is the expiration date of the replacement...suppose I get lucky and my original bulb lasts beyond the indicated expiration/best if used by date (either because I don,t watch the set enough hours per day or the original just lasts a long time), what then?!?
quick poll, what is the expiration date on your spare bulb?
Best if used by! What the heck is it food? :D
Ben, how long do they give you? If I get the spare now, will it last Months or Years?

Zechman 02-08-06, 09:37 AM BTW, the tv isn't exposed to any excessive dust.
A quick bit of trivia: inside any enclosed space that people are frequently in (ESPECIALLY homes) something like 95-98% of the "dust" in the air and settling on things is . . . particles of human skin. And it's worse in the rooms that people spend the most time.
So if you (anyone--I don't mean to single out hifi59) think that your Qualia doesn't really have to deal with much dust, you're probably wrong. It's a Qualia, after all!

Penton-Man 02-08-06, 12:15 PM Regarding a new bulb,
I'm not sure if Sony enforces this but, I believe that when you order a new bulb, they have/had a policy that you have something like 30 days or 60 days to try it out ....just to make sure you didn't get a dud.
After that, yous on your own.

Dear God: Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one
another?
Dear God: When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the
same old story?
Dear God: Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang,
the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not ONE named for a dog? How often
do you see a cougar riding around? We do love a nice ride! Would it be so
hard to rename the "Chrysler Eagle" the " Chrysler Beagle"? :)
Dear God: If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is
he still a bad dog?
Dear God: We dogs can understand human verbal instructions, hand signals,
whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent ID's, electromagnetic energy fields,
and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand? :p
Dear God: More meatballs, less spaghetti, please. :D
Dear God: Are there mailmen in Heaven? If there are, will I have to
apologize?
Dear God: Let me give you a list of just some of the things I must remember to
be a good dog.
1. I will not eat the cats' food before they eat it or after they throw it
up.
2. I will not roll on dead seagulls, fish, crabs, etc., just because I like
the way they smell.
3. I will not munch on "leftovers" in the kitty litter box, although they are
tasty.
4. The diaper pail is not a cookie jar.
5. The sofa is not a 'face towel'. Neither are Mom and Dad's laps.
6. The garbage collector is not stealing our stuff.
7. My head does not belong in the refrigerator.
8. I will not bite the officer's hand when he reaches in for Mom's driver's
license and registration.
9. I will not play tug-of-war with Dad's underwear when he's on the toilet.
10. Sticking my nose into someone's crotch is an unacceptable way of saying
"Hello".
11. I don't need to suddenly stand straight up when I'm under the coffee
table.
12. I must shake the rainwater out of my fur before entering the house - not
after.
13. I will not throw up in the car.
14. I will not come in from outside and immediately drag my butt.
15. I will not sit in the middle of the living room and lick my crotch when we
have company.
16. The cat is not a 'squeaky toy' so when I play with him and he makes that
noise, it's usually not a good thing.
And, finally, my last two questions . . .
Dear God: Why do humans only have 10 Commandments and dogs have 16?
P.S. Dear God: When I get to Heaven may I have my testicles back? :(

Zechman 02-09-06, 11:26 AM I don't think so. Maybe Professor Zechman could give us all (or point us towards) a dissertation on "MPEG: Compression, Processing, & Artifacts"...
Without getting too technical, all compression relies on the fact that most data is not very random. Truly random data cannot be compressed.
(An aside: encrypted data usually doesn't compress well, either. Encryption algorithms deliberately try to make the results as close to mathematically random as possible, which makes it difficult to decrypt.)
Compression of picture data relies on the fact that most of the time, any given pixel is fairly close in color to the pixels next to it. Compression of moving pictures futher relies on the fact that most of the time, any given pixel in one frame is close in color to the same pixel in the next frame--so the "next frame" is sent as only the changes from the one before it.
The strobe light problem is simple. Strobes change the color of every pixel on the screen dramatically from one frame to the next, and do it repeatedly. Normal MPEG encoding puts a full frame that's not based on the previous one (a "key frame") twice per second (I think). If you make a radical enough change from one frame to another outside of the key frame schedule, the "changes to the one before it" become larger than the size of a new key frame and so information has to be discarded in order stay within the bandwidth constraints.
Depending on what information is thrown away, you get macroblocking.

BenDover 02-09-06, 11:48 AM I think the problem with the artifacting during the strobe lights is the fact that MPEG-2 compression requires a fixed quantization step size on each frame for the intra-block DC coefficients. Since the intra-block DC coefficients represent the average intensity of the block, and since according to Weber's Law human vision is much more sensitive in dark areas as opposed to light areas, when you've got a frame with strobing lights, you are bound to see some horrific blocking artifacts...this isn't the case with the new AVC/H.264 and VC-1 codecs that will be implemented in HiDef DVDs (assuming, of course, that the encoders make use of the ability to vary the quantizer step size on a macroblock basis for the intra-block DC coefficients (that is, not limited to a single quantizer step size for the entire frame...btw, quantizer step size essentially equates to how much of the original information will be there for reproduction...quantizer step size of 1, all the info (least compression), step size of 64, the worst blocking you can imagine)
FWIW, I saw the same macroblocking/tiling/jaggies during the strobe flashes, viewing OTA. So, the issue is not with Adelphia, Comcast, DirecTV or any of the providers. It's compression directly from the source -- CBS.

brt3....... thats good. I found a video of brt3's cousin... The resemblance is striking. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8181801990250175607Most definitely a DISTANT cousin -- though I loved that ad...
Geez, speaking of dogs (hah!) -- I had to swing into the mall today to grab some cabinet pulls, took Elmo The WonderDog® in with me, and GEEZ!!! There must have been five or ten rather stunning women of varying ages -- one who was particularly Alba-esque -- and all were rendered completely powerless by Da 'Mo. Unbelievable, as the most attractive (and by far the best endowed, with a low-cut top to clearly illustrate this fact) insisted on crouching/squatting at floor level (to pet the dog, of course) while talking to me, forcing me to gaze upon her more-than-ample cleavage. I have never been closer to asking for directions in my life; if she'd been French I'd have been toast...

Question of the Day……(My apologies if this has been already posted on this thread as I quickly perused it and didn’t see any mention)
What will most likely be the major sporting activity on the minds of all the residents of Turin (correctly pronounced Torino no matter what one’s ethnicity actually is ) come Sunday evening ?
Ans. – If you answered the Winter Olympics, beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. WRONG !
You see the heart and soul of the residents of Turin is their football (actually one can call it soccer too! ) team ………………the perennial powerhouse known as Juventus (nickname….YOU-Vay (wasn’t that easy to say!).
Anyway Serie A (correctly prounced “ah”- which I might add ALL soccer fans despite their nationality or ethnicity seem to pronounce correctly) league leading Juventus plays second-place Internazionale of Milan in a BIG match Sunday evening at the San Siro in Milan (correctly pronounced Milano, no matter what one’s ethnicity might be).
Sooooooooooooooooooooooo, the major sporting activity on the minds of the locals will actually not be the Olympics but – their beloved Juventus playing Inter Milan.
Now if I could just get that match and the downhill in HD !

BenDover 02-11-06, 10:43 AM hey guys, in all seriousness, when i mentioned a while back seeing a slight green blob across the top-right-center of the screen on startup no one mentioned whether they had this. this was not there until recently and quickly disappears but i am wondering if it has to do with the bulb possibly reaching its end of life...also makes me wonder whether the GW SXRD sets are suffering from the green blob as a result of a low quality bulb???
you have to catch it upon first start up b/c it quickly disappears and i only notice it because on startup the qualia's gray information bar appears across the top, making the greenish blob visible/apparent
I'm seeking discrete codes to program into my MX-3000 remote control for the Qualia 006, especially to the various video inputs without having to cycle through them. I've searched through remotecentral.com, so far without success.
Anybody have them or know where I can locate them?
Thanks.
Cargen - look harder :D you were at the right place. I got them there for my MX-700
BenDover, I posted a while back mine has the blob pemrmanently  in the center of the screen. They will be here Monday to look at it (and hopefully do something about it). Replacing the bulb had no affect on mine. If you want to really test for it and have an HD-TiVo turn it off - nice gray screen to inspect uniformity with :D - and if you have photoshop and a digital camera, you can really freak youself out

To those that missed the Opening Ceremonies last night… I NEVER thought I would see a Formula 1 Ferrari spinning donuts on center stage at a Winter Olympics ! :cool:THAT was amazing, although it was the s-l-o-w-e-s-t pit stop in Formula One history... ;)
It was a decent set of donuts, though I think Mike needs to work on his technique with Alex Zanardi. That new, smaller, V8 Ferrari has even more of a high-pitched wail than before. Just a matter of time before these mills regularly exceed 20,000 rpm during a race (Cosworth claims to have exceeded 20K during on-track testing)...
If you thought that was something, however, wait until you see the new 850 horsepower Ferrari-engined Zamboni they'll be using at the skating facility...

How long have you had the Q006? You've had this anomaly from the start?
Please keep us informed after the tech comes out to inspect/diagnose. Can you post a pic? I'll try to post mine today...I have to get it this morning before anyone fires her up.

Speaking of the Olympics...you guys were commenting that you thought the quality of the SuperBowl was awful, I have never seen sooooooo much blocking than I have watching the Olympics so far. The snow/ice must be a killer or they are really bit starving these broadcasts in order to beam them over to us here in the U.S. ... I wonder which satellite they are using?
BenDover,
Be sure that your 006 has been on at least 15 minutes as it takes a little time for the imaging chip to come to temperature. Apparantly, the correction tables are based on operating temperature, not room temp.
In regards to the Olympics, I'm surprised that it was the network feed. We're all about to tar and feather the local network affiliate. Guess we'll have to wait till they screw up next time.

JimP, that is the thing though, I only see the green "blob" when I first turn the set on and it disappears quickly as the set/bulb/imaging chip warms up (not sure which is responsible but I'm presently leaning towards the bulb since I had never seen this before until recently, as my bulb is starting to near 2,000 hours).
Ok,
As requested a couple of pictures. The before is soon after I got the Qualia, the after is now. Have to see what tomorrow brings...

Well, no real news to report. Tech came, tech saw, tech left... He agreed it did not look normal, but he would have to call Sony. Hopefully a new light engine in my future...Did they give you a time frame on this? I would hope that Sony would really make an effort to take care of you, something like: "We will do whatever it takes to make your set right as quickly as we can". I'm not hearing that from you...
Perhaps some of our resident physician dudes could comment on the Gray's Anatomy "Code Black" episode. First, let's assume Merideth was 25 feet behind Bomb-squad Man. Wouldn't the pressure wave from the blast -- at a minimum -- burst both ear drums? Though I knew the writers wouldn't kill her (since the show bears her character's name), that Merideth Gray certainly takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'...
Guess it all boils down to the "willing suspension of disbelief" issue. Assuming someone's chest took a bazooka round that failed to detonate, what are the odds that:
1. the round wouldn't be set off by the frantic loading, racing about, and unloading in the ambulance...
2. paramedic girl wouldn't set it off by moving her hands in and out of Reenactment Dude's chest cavity...
3. Merideth wouldn't set it off by grabbing, removing, and handing off said round to Bomb-squad Man...
4. The one dude in the show who truly knew how to handle a bomb would be blown to bits within 30 seconds of gently grabbing the thing...
Of course, this episode also addressed my primary complaint with all these medical dramas -- don't nuthin' ever blow up!!! Them fellas at "House" need to figger out a way to blow stuff up real good!!!
BRT the third...
I had the same questions and only watched the show because of the Super Bowl Promo's...and the Officials made me watch it! :D
I can answer the explosion question too. My sister has a big issue now as the lab where she worked had an explosion just as she was walking by the unvented container. Big problems now and they will never go away!

just received the monster cable avs2000 pro voltage regulator. i won it on ebay for 490.00 brand new. picture seems brighter, tighter even cleaner blacks. could be my imagination. anyway, turns out my ac is at 123v-124v. the avs2000 is keeping it steady at 120volts now. i wonder if this consistant slight overvoltage made my components run hotter. maybe thats why my light engine went south so soon.! any thoughts?
brt3 - I started going through Sony, but since the first two places were too far away, or didn't do 006's I went back to where I purchased it. I won't know until they call as to how "fast" the service will be :) At least it's watchable (sort of).
hifi59 - I suspect it didn't have anything to do with it (voltage wise) since the Lamp and all the voltages are regulated DC and derived from the AC mains. Just a quick look at the schematics didn't show anything runing directly off the AC. Mine is high too, but my UPS takes care of it too. Possibly if there is noise (motors, transients, etc), or a bad ground, that might account for your improved picture, and short lifespan... Just a guess though.

Hey Neo2005,
Good to hear from you !
Depending on how the shark was acting and how much chum was in the water, I likely would have done the same thing. I have been cageless with sharks every bit as dangerous; tiger, oceanic whitetip, great hammerhead, bull and a pack of feeding silky sharks at night (not all at the same time). I have also been persuaded to leave the water by a few sharks when they become overly aggressive. I have always loved watching sharks. Now what scares me is the Titan Trigerfish protecting a nest. They bite

"This subject is a little off topic to this thread, but if you follow the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discussions here on AVS, Toshiba updated their specs and will allow HD over component now that ICT flag rules have been decided for both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD." -Got this off the Oppo DV971H thread.
So it appears that with the advent of the next wave they may simply do away with all the dang super protections. Considering the Q doesn't seem to prefer HDMI over component (using a component dvd player at the moment) this seems like a decent turn of events if true. Although I hope that the i-link is available as that is the best path but I certainly wouldn't mind being able to have my 36" XBR (or my 61 inch Sony) finally be able to get decent source material in HD (they were the early HD tvs prior to HDMI).
It just seems too odd after all the insane paranoia that suddenly HD over component is OK.... I guess they believe that their "flags" will keep everyone from copying it (cough um since when do pirates care what flag you wave?) but heck it sure is nice to know that I won't be limited to just HDMI (back of the ole Q is pretty darn crowded).
Any thoughts anyone else see this posted around?

I'm not sure I follow your enthusiasm; the components inputs currently accept 1080i; if you mean they will allow you to accept 1080p, i highly doubt that the current component input jacks/video processors will accept 1080p.
as for pirates, they can't afford the equipment necessary to capture component...they have much cheaper alternatives.
This may be old news, but I just saw that Pioneer's Blu-Ray player will offer a 1080I output for deinterlacing 1080P/24fps Blu-Ray movies. This was pretty much predicted among the faithful here as it just didn't make any sense that Sony would disenfranchise all of the existing displays that didn't accept a 1080P native source.

I think thesirjay is enthused because he wants to free up another HMDI input on his 006 and get HD movies to his other TV's that only have component inputs ??
Penton-Man 02-14-06, 03:13 PM You did NOT hear this from me.
Any 006 owners out there that purchased their units thru Sonycierges and are interested in a substantial discount on the purchase of an 005 (being offered only for the month of Feb.),
Call your Sonycierge and just ask if they have 005’s on sale for this month.
If you’re a cierge client, they should offer you the best price without any haggling.
Bottom line, it’s still a lot for a 46” TV but, it IS a substantial discount from original MSRP.

Actually I am enthused since it means I will have 3 TVs that are capable of being used with high def materials.
Previously they had banned the use of component for high def (thus all our upscaling dvd players are supposed to only go out through HDMI on copy protected works) so it is very odd that the latest and greatest with much higher PQ apparently will be available over component.
The PS3 will probably not have 1080P whether that is only games or also movies I don't know. It is great that my obsolete high def tvs are suddenly going to be able to play the latest and greatest again though.

Though I thought very seriously about it I am unsure that the Q005 is state-of-the-art. LCD is still advancing quickly enough that last year's leading edge is middle-of-the-pack now. In it's favor, the Q005 offers LED backlighting and superb color rendition. The processor in the external box is supposed to be extraordinary, does a very good job with SD, and (apparently) offers very good scaling with zero banding in dark areas. The set is also stunning to look at when the picture is turned off, and is supposed to have a very good (for a flat panel) sound system. However, in absolute terms it may not be SOTA as far as black levels go. I had NO problem spending $13K on my Qualia 006, but I am uncertain that the 005 offers the same performance per dollar.
I wish, however, that I could get better info on the set's true performance. There is a thread on avsforum, but it sounds like the primary poster bought his set in from Japan. It also sounds as though changes were made on the US-spec sets (v1.2, if you will). So, I don't have any definitive idea of this set's performance, and when I saw the set at SonyStyle/San Francisco it was one of the worst-looking sets in the showroom -- bad setup + poor demo material = NO SALE...
If they want more of my money I suggest they contact us with special pricing on Q006s. If they offered a similar special on our set I'd buy another in a heartbeat...

BenDover,
Thank you. Checked mine yesterday and it doesn't need the update. Got some help from brt3 with this. Mini Dive failed to write down the serial number when he mounted it on the wall, and now I can't see it. And Mini Dive refused to help me take it down. I looked on the box, and there were three numbers, but I didn't know which was the SN. Since brt3 has one also, I asked him which one looked like the SN and he helped. :D
Now Mini Dive has to stand in the corner and miss the Olympics (for one hour) . . .
something interesting for you bleeding edge folks:
Details of Next-Gen Formats Beginning To Emerge
By Shane Buettner
As both sides in the format war posture regarding their launch dates, reports arise that the standards the two formats will be based on are either just completed or not finished yet. Is either format going to be ready to come out of the oven anytime soon? As I write this, the HD DVD camp informs me that the March launch is still a go, and Blu-ray is still sticking to the first half of 2006, which could be as early as the end of May (in spite of gaming industry publications saying they'd be surprised to see PlayStation3 before the end of 2006.) Nevertheless, as we get closer to the respective launches some details about the implementation of both formats are coming clear.
First and foremost, it is now a virtual certainty that while HD DVD's initial releases will be 1080i, Blu-ray's releases will in fact be 1080p. In a recent phone interview Pioneer's Andy Parsons confirmed that Blu-ray players such as Pioneer Elite's BDP-HD1 will offer an option for a 1080i output for the many displays (even those with 1080p resolution in a lot of cases) that cannot accept a 1080p signal in its native format. The Blu-ray players will apparently offer on-the-fly 3/2 pulldown and deinterlacing of the 1080p/24fps signals Blu-ray discs will carry.
Regarding the significance of 1080p/24fps, there is a real potential for improved image quality in displays that will be able to maintain film's inherent 24fps frame rate, or a direct multiple such as 48 or 72fps. Current displays most often use a 60Hz refresh rate (refresh rate being analogous to frames per second) that still requires 24fps film material to be deinterlaced with 3/2 sequencing intact as 60 frames per second is not a direct multiple of 24. This causes minor temporal distortion in that some frames must be displayed on screen a little more often than others. Not so with 24, 48, or 72fps. Not only will we be seeing 1920x1080 progressive, the displays that keep the Blu-ray signal at 24fps or a direct multiple of 24fps will eliminate this time-based distortion ("judder") for smoother, more film-like images with movies.
Image quality with both formats is a real concern right now for the millions of potential early adopters whose displays accept HD signals only in the component video domain (i.e., those without HDMI or DVI/HDCP compatible displays). Both Blu-ray and HD DVD players will output only copy-protected digital streams over HDMI and perhaps FireWire. Recently the online community officially went up in arms with the news that the AACS copy protection standard used on both formats will allow content providers to invoke an "Image Constraint Token" in the bitstream that will instruct players to downconvert the 1920x1080 signals on the discs to 960x540 on the analog component outputs.
The key thing to remember for now is that image constraint is an option; it's not mandatory. While I wouldn't want to bet my house on the whims of studio executives and their intellectual property attorneys, it's hard for me to imagine any studio would want to exclude a group of potential early adopters numbering in the millions given that the success of either format is hardly a sure thing. And just how much danger is there of pirated copies made from the analog outputs of next-gen players anyway? If the next-gen discs are available at reasonable enough prices, why would anyone want to buy an analog-domain knock-off? So, let's not jump off this bridge unless (or until) we actually come to it.
On the audio side, things aren't quite as clear. Both formats are spec'd to carry up to eight channels of hi-res linear PCM (up to 24/96 for HD DVD, and 24/192 for Blu-ray) over HDMI. Some of Blu-ray's initial releases, including that old standby Fifth Element, are in fact spec'd for uncompressed PCM soundtracks. But there are also new codecs from DTS and Dolby that offer much higher data rates than the current codecs, as well as options for lossless compression with full bit-for-bit data recovery. The catch is that these formats will only be carried digitally over HDMI spec 1.3, which isn't scheduled to be finalized until the middle of 2006 (best case scenario, I'm told). And yet, HD DVD and Blu-ray players will already be in stores if current launch schedules hold. What gives?
From the HD DVD side, the players will "transcode" signals encoded with the new Dolby or DTS formats to linear PCM, which can be carried over current HDMI spec and decoded by a good number of surround processors and AVRs already on the market. It's also possible (if not more than likely) that the initial HD DVD releases will be encoded with the current Dolby and/or DTS lossy compression codecs, but at the highest data rates currently allowed. Both HD DVD and Blu-ray players will apparently decode the new codecs and convert them to multichannel analog output, and there are certainly vast numbers of surround processors and AVRs with multichannel analog inputs out there waiting.
As far as the new audio codecs and digital domain compatibility, the full lossless compression signals will only travel over HDMI 1.3, whenever that comes. Backward compatible 5.1-channel streams will be embedded in the signal that can be transmitted by current S/PDIF connections, but these will be the current lossy compression streams we have now. The bummer is that time doesn't stop for any specification- the first generation HD DVD and Blu-ray players will apparently come without HDMI 1.3, and so will any surround processors or receivers released in the interim. It's theoretically possible that players and processors in the field could be upgraded to HDMI 1.3 in software, but no manufacturers I've spoken with will commit to an upgrade path for now.
This is nothing new of course. It's hard to remember way back to 1997, when DVD was first released. Not only was there a format war then too (remember DIVX anyone?), but Dolby Digital was spec'd into the format while DTS was left out in the cold at first. It was sometime later that the first DTS compatible DVD players appeared, followed later by DTS compatible surround processors, AVRs and (eventually) software. Not that the history lesson helps if you're shopping for a new surround processor or AVR now! The transition to a new format always involves some uncertainty, and hopefully years from now these glitches will be as hard to remember as DVDs early steps and missteps!
okay, who is ready to buy another device to hook up to their tv ? :D

Given the fact that the above is not an issue for me, I have not kept up with the particulars of passing HD over component but, keep in mind that it all depends on the film studios !
If they decide to put a fly in the ointment, whether an HD player is capable of passing a Hi-Def signal will be a moot point.
I just don't know where the studios stand on this issue and what will REALLY happen when they start pumping movies out on HD discs of whichever flavor.
Penton-Man 02-15-06, 12:53 AM Though I thought very seriously about it I am unsure that the Q005 is state-of-the-art. Q006s.
I'm in complete agreement. :)
It's scary how similar we think.
But I would like to see one of these puppies with a primo source somewhere just to be fair to the 006 minus one.
Sony seems to have a definite problem in the way they display their self-proclaimed best pieces in their SonyStyle stores.
We need some process improvement here !.........Sir Howard ! :)
Penton-Man 02-15-06, 01:04 AM Perhaps some of our resident physician dudes could comment on the Gray's Anatomy "Code Black" episode.
Sorry Ray, I just watched this episode (had it recorded, cause I been busy)
Keep in mind I think this two parter was purty bad compared to the majority of the Grey's episodes and no where near the quality of HOUSE.
1. I don't know.
2. I don't know.
3. I don't know.
4. I don't know.
Regarding Meredith's eardrums, I guess it depends on the strengh of the blast. Best to ask all those guys and gals when they're able to come home from Iraq.
I will say though, that given the size of the projectile and the concurrent penetrating injury, it is doubtful that the dude would have lasted long enough to get to the hospital.
IF he had made it, it would have been a frantic race to infuse fluids and volume expanders to compensate for the bleeding that would be occuring from such an injury rather than all the dilly-dallying that was going on.
But that's Hollywood. :)
And I liked the shower scene at the beginning of Part 1.
I think these writers should stick to the interpersonal relationship stuff and cool it with the action/drama stuff as it brings out their weaknesses.
Tune in next week, and I'll bet you or your better half wil enjoy a "normal" Grey's episode more.
Better yet, watch HOUSE if you can only stomach so much "medical drama."
I just like seeing the interns suffer. :D
Proves if they've got the RIGHT STUFF. :)
