View Full Version : QUALIA 006 Owner's Thread
divedude 03-02-06, 12:08 AM One of Elmo's faves... :D We're trying to figure out how to sneak him into "Eight Below" (the newest Disney Canine Adventure). My daughter suggested -- since I've been using a post-surgical cane -- that I wear dark sunglasses and paint my cane white. Elmo as Guide Dog is a VERY frightening thought...
That sounds like a great idea. I bet you can also get Elmo into the Shaggy Dog when it opens :D
BenDover 03-02-06, 11:40 AM I agree with JA (http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/zap-jessicaalbaplayboycoverintotheblue,0,2726779.story?coll=zap-news-headlines), it certainly led me to believe there would be a nude spread, namely hers, in PB
Penton-Man 03-02-06, 12:04 PM Elmo as Guide Dog is a VERY frightening thought...
Well I suspect Elmo is much smarter than this fella though……….

Good thing is……….he can probably keep himself entertained without the need for someone else in the family to steal his bone. :D
Auditor55 03-02-06, 12:06 PM Not that it is really necessary, nor do I wish to instigate anything, but a comment (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7220502&&#post7220502) was made in the general SXRD thread regarding umr that some here may wish to contend... :D
I don't know which specific comment you are referring to but the one I made I stand by it. No put down to Mr. Umr, but if he can't see the green blob on SXRD's he needs to call his nearest eye specialist.
BTW, I have seen the green blob on a Qualia sitting in Magnolia hi-fi. :(

“I recommend that he get an eye examination ASAP!! In his business his eyes are the most important tool he has.”
This would be considered a slanderous statement(to injure the reputation of another) suggesting incompetence due to a physical disability.
As umr derives his income from professional calibrations from some members of this forum, you may have impeded his right to pursue his professional livelihood which could be estimated in $$ by the harm that post did on the SXRD thread, thus providing some enumeration for damages incurred by your slander.
If I were umr, I would have you deposed. Then I would file a Civil Action Complaint against you in the State of Texas for the above estimated damages hopefully necessitating you to fly your arse to Texas if you’re out of state*, then I would watch you squirm in the courtroom – (even if said damages were only a few thousand dollars based on the traffic on that thread and the % of estimated calibrations umr would have done without your slander)
KEEP IT UP ! and …………………………………………..
If umr doesn’t do the above, I have a mind to finance the whole situation on my own to teach you a lesson.
P.S.
I know of people that have been sued for much less !

If you chose to ignore the whole situation then I would ask the judge to issue a warrant for your arrest.

LOL ha!ha!ha! that is most ridiculous post I've seen since I've been posting on this forum.
Please sir, you obviously don't know anything about tort law, you can't even establish a prima facie case for slander with that nonsense you are spouting.
BTW, I live California and not Texas, wouldn't the case need to be brought in Federal Court?
First of all, a Texas court wouldn't not have jurisdiction over me, I would challenge jurisdisction. I could file all my papers myself and represent myself Pro per against such a meritless claim. I'm an Information Resources Specialist at a global litigation law firm and have access to Lexis, Westlaw etc and other legal data basis to help me prepare for such as case, that is if it ever seen the light of day in court which is highly highly doubtful. After such an attempt to sue me crashed and burned, I would then sue on the grounds of bringing meritless lawsuit.
This is so silly but yet entertaining :)

Then you set off penton man with his post and then you fire back. ALL, unnecessary.

I really don't like to come into this Qualia thread at all, but you have a Qualia owner who's been coming into the SXRD owners thread, stiring up stuff, even questioning if I even own the a SXRD. I have a TV sitting in my living room with the horrible green blob and purple tint issues, along with other SXRD owners trying to sort things out. I don't need people insulting my me by implying what I see doesn't really exist or is not an issue and questioning my honesty.
I agree that all of this unnecessary, but that whole lawsuit rant is by penton man is just silly, laughable at best.

I will be purchasing a non-Qualia SXRD soon and have recommended to friend that they purchase the unit. I didn't drop in on that thread as if I shouldn't be there...I have been on the non-Qualia threads since the beginning. I stirred nothing up other than to make my periodic stop over there to see if something other than the green blob is being discussed or if there has been some miraculous fix. Noone has ever denied the problem's existence and when members have stopped in here to ask if we have the blob issue, I think I have been the only one to indicate that recently I have been seeing an anomaly, although not as drastic as some photos I've seen, on my set upon first startup that quickly disappears. It coincides with my set's bulb getting near the end of its useful lifetime.
I asked, politely and in a non-accusatory fashion (and I'll admit that someone reading that can take it as an attack on you, but that should further illustrate the impropriety of your statement about umr), whether you owned a unit b/c I can distinctly remember you being on the Samsung 1080p threads as well, stating that you were buying one of those, so I just wanted to know whether you were speaking from first-hand knowledge.
That being said, your comments about umr, were off base and I simply pointed it out and tried to show you that his statement was probably misconstrued. Knowing that he is a professional, as Penton has pointed out, I though that such a comment should not go by without being addressed since so many people who are uninitiated around here stop into threads and read statements like that and then base their decisions on them. Much like many people probably haven't purchased the SXRD simply because of reading the issues reported here...believe me, that happens.
Penton simply took your extreme statement and turned it around on you to illustrate a point.
BTW, many of the owners here in the Qualia thread ARE lawyers, not that that really matters.

Glad to hear it was simply the bulb, for now, separate and apart from the fact that it didn't even make it to 2,000 hours.
Re your UPS hypothesis, I'm not sure what type/brand UPS you have, but normally they don't deliver their "square-wave" output unless the power cuts off, and in those instance I would imagine you were nearby watching the set and simply powered down, leaving only the cooling fan running off the power from the UPS. Have you had many/any power outages? I've got mine on an APC UPS that does not deliver a pure sine-wave output and I haven't had any problems.
The bulbs seem to be hit or miss, with most lasting just over 2,000 hours, IIRC.
Yes, you are right. When power outages occur, it's power down time. Lots of outages in my part of Houston whenever we have an electrical storm. Usually short duration, and lots of "breaker bounce". It's a belkin UPS, non-sine wave.
thesirjay 03-02-06, 07:15 PM Well it appears that HD DVD has a 2 month lead - they are supposed to actually be out at the end of this month...
http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/03/02/toshiba_hddvd_launch/
What do you all think? Is it worth jumping on the wagon with the first run? Or should we hold out for a bit more bug free version - I know I am leaning towards the 500 dollar version as the 800 doesn't seem to have any technical advantages and I imagine that these first gen players will be pretty darn obsolete soon.

You need to keep in mind that Blu-ray just announced they would roll out players and dvd's on May 23. Do you buy a Toshiba and then find out in a year that Blu-ray wins the battle of the formats? Who will have the most software available, etc. To much unknown at this point. IMHO
thesirjay 03-02-06, 07:58 PM The way I see it at present is that I will end up owning betamax and vhs most likely. Luckily the PS3 should give me a cheap seats entry into blu-ray but with various studios jumping on different wagons it seems owning the HD DVD as well will let me catch as many movies as possible. I don't expect this to be a quick fight.

First, I've already come off a bad Algolith trip. I was very early on the pre-order list for a Dragonfly/MosquitoHDMI combo, and still have a very bad taste in my mouth...
Second, I think I'll try and maximize the enjoyment of my DVD collection just a little bit longer. My Pio DV-59AVi is looking very good these days and I'm on the prowl for a good used Denon 5910 -- which would keep my collection looking good for some time to come (or until LOA makes it to HighDefDisc).
Third, we've been experiencing bizarre times around Chez Elmo as of late. Six months of bizarre stuff, really, and we are NOT up for anything that adds to the complexity or drama. Knee surgery was tough enough, but we've had triple bypasses (my Dad), open-heart surgery (my 12-week old niece), failing refrigerators (at least it waited until the exact day we returned from Hawaii), failing toilets (one partially flooded our kitchen situated in the room below), astonishing cabinet install where every sub (electrician, wall texture, paint) screwed up big-time -- we're talking a disaster of biblical proportions; human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria... Wait a minute, guess I got just a tiny bit carried away there at the end... :D
On the other hand:
There are people who have it much worse...
I have an amazing wife and kids ...
Elmo loves me, this I know...
I get a daily dose of Qualia Therapy each evening...
I ask for directions whenever things get too confusing... ;)

That's not a bad plan but, why not wait untill you see exactly what TITLES are available that you know you like.
You may find yourself saving some money if HD DVD's offerings prove to be very anemic.
I agree with brt, holding out a tad after their launch may be a wise decision, as I expect prices(Blu-ray machines) to significantly decrease after a few months.

I will later tonight, I just have to get the following off my chest.
(see below)
Penton-Man 03-02-06, 09:29 PM To any Qualians or other viewers of this thread that are unaware of the behavior of our most un-welcomed visitor on the last page, I feel compelled to enlighten you.
If he is not the #1 troll on AVS forum then he is actively competing for a podium position in that category.
His posts generally range from outright insults to veiled innuendos intending to provoke owners of some display or video component.
I suspect that he has cleaned up his rhetoric to socially fit-in on what is apparently his home thread (the baby SXRD thread) but, it seems he slips back into his true nature with off-the-cuff comments like that about umr.
Suffice to say, I will sleep extremely well tonight knowing that I/we contributed by making glowing comments about our 006’s (which I’m sure influenced him – even if he denies it) into his purchasing decision to buy a baby SXRD……..which, in his case, turned out to be a dud :D ………. real or imagined.
As long as I/we contributed to his misery, there IS justice in this world. :D
Here’s hoping that someday a U.S. Marshall serves him with papers regarding some current/future behavior at his place of employment for all to see ….so he never achieves that promotion to……………….

divedude 03-02-06, 09:45 PM Information Resources Specialist Grade II.
Hey PM,
Isn't that a fancy name for a guy who stands around the water cooler all day :D
Just wanted to say this once and for all, since certain people have been putting the a-s-s back in aspersions...
I have been getting my displays ISF calibrated for nearly ten years now. In that time I've used 3 or 4 techs, and have also taken the ISF training course at Runco HQ in Hayward.
Jeff is -- far and away -- the best ISF-tech I've ever dealt with. He has superb technical knowledge of both the sets he works on and the computer software he writes to help him optimize his calibration technique. Above all else he is a genuinely nice guy who is extremely easy to work with, one who's never heard the term "prima donna". A lot of these guys think they're doing you a favor; Jeff always treats you as a valued client.
Perhaps those who live in glass houses might want to reconside casting both stones and aspersions. Whether or not you call someone a hack is not the issue here. The poster seems to have no personal experience dealing with Jeff, and -- instead -- simply misconstrued something Jeff posted. As such, I think he owes Jeff an apology, though that's unlikely to occur.
O.K., can we return to our regularly scheduled programming now? Let's remember that the flame wars nearly killed this thread, and cost us a couple of valuable members in the process. Just say NO to trolls!

Stop in now
I'm going to pee in my pants from laughing so hard.
This is, more than likely, old hat for some you direction-takers out there... ;)
That being the case, HERE (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/) is the Blu-Ray release schedule. So far I'm pretty underwhelmed; the only confirmed releases (w/release dates) I'd consider would be:
Fifth Element Sony Release date: May 23, 2006
Last Waltz MGM Documentary, Release date: May 23, 2006
Legends of the Fall Sony Release date: June 13, 2006
Terminator MGM Release date: June 13, 2006
Terminator 2: Judgment Day Lionsgate Release date: May 23, 2006
Where are the truly great films like "Apocalypse Now", "Lawrence Of Arabia", and "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"??? There are some interesting films listed, but almost all of those have either NO release info, or something truly vague like, "to be released later"...
Which is why I'm still on the sidelines. Hell, I may even have to fire up the old LD player...
Speaking of which, has anyone had the incredible courage (or unmitigated gaul) to watch a LaserDisc on their Qualia? ;)
brt3,

Seriously, I really feel like the RIGHT thing do, under these circumstances, is for you to feel the Force, young Skywalker, pick up your phone (or keyboard), and...
BECOME MY BETA-TESTER!!!
If you go to the site that begins with the dreaded post-surgical word "Crutch" and ends in Elmo's favorite word "Field", you will see that you can save 10% on the Denon DVD-5910Ci merely by purchasing it along with the cheapest TV they sell -- which you can then resell (or use for your pooch to watch old "Lassie" reruns on). Thus, by spending 180 clams, you can save 380 little bivalves -- more than enough to cover your rush shipping charges... ;)

Well the age-old wisdom of the marketing geniuses is that you don’t release your primo titles until there is a LARGE consumer base to support significant sales – which they deem justifiable given the prowess of said primo films.
If you release them early, they just don’t sell well because so few people own players and then by the time everyone on your street has the player, the title is just sitting collecting dust because it’s getting very little advertising at that point.
At least that’s the way I think they think.

Just THINK how much $$ you will make if you have your cierge sell you about three PS3 players and you subsequently sell them on e-bay ...........factory sealed box - never used, yada, yada yada.
Because I suspect when those machines eventually debut they will be in VERY limited supply and it will truly be every man for himself at the local C.C., B.B., etc.
Well the age-old wisdom of the marketing geniuses is that you don’t release your primo titles until there is a LARGE consumer base to support significant sales – which they deem justifiable given the prowess of said primo films...I think the aforementioned geniuses forget one thing: each day now the media market becomes more and more diffuse. That is, there are more and more choices competing for our downtime. Look at the insane number of channels and the spread of HD content -- along with lower-rez options like Internet TV and video iPods. If these guys want to compete they need to CLEARLY differentiate themselves; it's not enough to have a better PQ unless there's the content to go along with it. In the audio world it's getting bad; audiophile-grade system sales are declining, as most customers seem to prefer quantity (iPod/iTunes & gigabytes of MP3s) to Quality. If this trend repeats itself in video -- which seems to be the case with the sales numbers of the iPod Video -- Sony and Toshiba will have to avoid a format war for one of these HDdisc formats to become a success. Since that's clearly NOT about to happen, it seems to me these new formats my just founder...
Or, I could be wrong, and they might just be the greatest thing since J.A. put on a bikini...

Once I have the high def dvd players I am happy with (and hopefully a free unlimited supply of material from netflix) then I can finally look at taking the plunge and getting a calibration the next time UMR is in the midwest.
Love it! :D
Absolutely,

I can imagine an old SNL skit.....
What's all this talk anout porno films? Do we need them in HD? I don't think so! Further, porno.....what? That's primo...primo, not porno!

Speaking of which, has anyone had the incredible courage (or unmitigated gaul) to watch a LaserDisc on their Qualia? ;)
BenDover 03-03-06, 04:20 PM You need to stop watching TV and come into reality. I'm still laughing at your stupid suggestion about suing me. he!he!he!
BTW, I would never spend 13K on TV, I'm sure you regret doing so as well. I've seen the Qualia and if you know me the second rate blacks on it would never influence me to buy a TV like it.
SED is going destroy the Qualia in every way and we all know that.
See, that last statement makes me question whether you truly are an SXRD owner trying to rectify a problem...AND, if it is true, and I do hope it is, I bet the Qualia owners are the first to buy the new SEDs...do you really think they are going to be inexpensive?
BenDover 03-03-06, 05:05 PM Ahhhh..... Reason, she eez a harsh mistress, no???
Seriously, I really feel like the RIGHT thing do, under these circumstances, is for you to feel the Force, young Skywalker, pick up your phone (or keyboard), and...
BECOME MY BETA-TESTER!!!
If you go to the site that begins with the dreaded post-surgical word "Crutch" and ends in Elmo's favorite word "Field", you will see that you can save 10% on the Denon DVD-5910Ci merely by purchasing it along with the cheapest TV they sell -- which you can then resell (or use for your pooch to watch old "Lassie" reruns on). Thus, by spending 180 clams, you can save 380 little bivalves -- more than enough to cover your rush shipping charges... ;)
Damn, you've worked up a plan I see? Now all you need is that beta tester :)
I was in fact on the Crutchfield site...I failed to mention what else was in the shopping cart with the 5910ci...the Toshiba HD-AX1 on preorder! :D

Zechman 03-03-06, 11:03 PM I asked if it had iLINK. He did not remember iLINK from his class and was sure it did not have it. Again, I speculated that was left off for copy protection purposes and got another agreeable nod.
Uh oh! I sincerely hope that this guy is wrong about i.Link. First off, there is a fully functional copy-protection system there (D-Theater DVHS uses it) that has not, to date, been cracked (that I'm aware of).
Futhermore, i.Link is the back-door to sending 1080P content to the Qualia 006 (and I expect the GW SXRD's as well), so if Sony's own Blu-ray player doesn't have i.Link, then that's very bad.
I, for one, have no interest in a Blu-ray player that doesn't have some form of IEEE-1394 connection. I was even eye-ing up the Pioneer unit until I saw that it had no FireWire.

I believe the Toshiba HD-DVD players have 1394 (aka, i.Link in Sony speak) :)
But, I don't know if I put too much stock in what this guy said b/c much of it seems inaccurate, or at least I would hope so; e.g., the statement that ONLY 1080p will be available over HDMI and all other resolutions will have to go over the component connections is insane and seems at odds with copy protection. They may limit component output to 540 so something doesn't make sense...unless I misunderstood what DD posted. And he also said that the Qualia was cutting edge...come one, didn't the Information Resource Specialist (aka, legal library worker) just tell us that after consulting all of his online legal resources that the Qualia was an over priced POS???

Who knows, the Sony guy may be 100% correct and we here are all working on past info and incorrect assumptions.
Please don’t feel bad. You DID find out some great stuff namely the price drop, the fact that they’re taking preorders and the confirmation of the quality of our 006’s. :D
I still say, thank you and minidive for attending and good job ! :)
P.S.
How do you think I felt when the b*stards told me L.o.A. would be included in the first 20 title releases and posted it as fact. :o Simply reporting on what you were told, dd. :)
Here's an article (http://www.hdbeat.com/2006/03/03/new-macs-connecting-to-hdtvs-they-just-work/) that says the new MacBook Pro hooks up to an HDTV via DVI without any problem.
BenDover 03-04-06, 02:45 PM OK, I've been AccuCal'd...
As the turtles in Finding Nemo would say, "Totally awesome, duuuuuuuuuuude..." :)
Great job on the video and superb job on the audio...totally satisfied.
My bulb is indeed near the end of its life as confirmed by its low light output...we calibrated using the old bulb based on umr's opinion that it shouldn't make much of a difference when I put the new bulb in. Left some suggestions regarding settings to change once the new bulb goes in.
I actually had the reverse reaction than what I was expecting...I thought the picture would be darker than I was accustomed to after calibration but the reverse happened (probably b/c of the low light output of my geriatric bulb :) ).
According to umr, my grayscale default was very accurate right out of the box, but my gamma was off...which he adjusted. a good test for me was a scene in u-571 when the sub is descending in a depth charge scene to collapse depth, and beyond. previously i was able to see false contouring/banding...it is no longer there.
I've never had a set calibrated before, but it was clear that umr goes above and beyond the call of duty and his depth of knowledge and understanding of the technologies involved is quite impressive...no, he didn't give me a discount for making such a statement :)
Now, it is off to BestBuy to buy some new DVDs... :D
dd, i hope you didn't take offense to my post, I didn't think you did anything wrong, I just didn't think that the tech was necessarily reporting the proper info, given past experience with such representatives and based on what he was saying...I wish you hadn't deleted the post as that was unnecessary, as PM pointed out.
If umr has any technical observations he would like to add about yet another data point on his Qualia experience belt I now I would welcome his addition to this thread's knowledge base...however dispersed that knowledge might be :)
BenDover,
Thank you for such positive comments. All I can say is that it was one of many excellent Qualia sets that I have worked on. The audio also turned out very well.
Hello ALL with 975's. I have had mine for almost a year and still love the picture quality.
I have had only one problem and wonder if anyone has heard about this before. The drawer...no, just kidding. My issue is that over the year that I have had it, about 3 or 4 times now the picture would go black on the Q and the sound would stop from the Surround set up. We say...what the heck...and notice the 975 has powered down...OFF!
This has only happened about 3 or 4 times, but wonder if anone here has heard of this problem. It is connected to the same AC as the rest of system (via Power Conditioner) and the Meridian 568 stays on. If there were any AC issues the Meridian is always the first to turn off.
P.S. This happened while watching March of the Penguins...great looking on the Q!

What is this pricedrop? :) I sure hope that i-link happens but the way they have neglected stuff and the insane negotiations that seem to be happening with the new standards I worry... after all they really don't seem to comprehend that having a installed user base that can USE their product is important. Thus all the early adopters of HD will not be able to see high def on their machines (until some Korean company decides to break their laws and accidently allow HD out via component).
If Sony doesn't worry at all about the billions they were paid for 1st gen HD products it does seem possible they may not worry about us only getting 1080i on a lesser input.
Penton-Man 03-04-06, 10:00 PM What is this pricedrop? :)
Well I reported in early Dec. that Sony was thinking about selling the players for $1300. give or take *a little*. :)
Seems that Starpower in Dallas was taking pre-orders this weekend for $999.99 and dd said the Sony rep there reported the price would be $999. when it debuts this summer.
I suspect this price drop from $1300. to 1K is probably that the bean counters changed things in the interim when Samsung said they’re coming out with a player for 1K.
That’s what I meant by “price drop”.

My first 975 would do exactly what you described. When it plays I have been very happy with the picture. However, it would just spaz out sometimes. Was a major pain as you had to get up and turn it back on then find the spot in the movie where you were at. Finally that POS turned off and stayed off so I returned it for a free replacement.
Fortunately the replacement has had no problems at all. All I ask is for this second POS to last until the new HD or Blu Ray players arrive. Then it is "Hammer Time" and off to the dumpster for this turd of a player.

I'm still rolling on the floor that you think you know anything about serving a civil complaint, you dont. I'm not impressed with your legal knowledge, which is minimal at best and I'm less impressed that you paid 13k for a RPTV. Or did you pay 13k? or did mommy and daddy buy it for you.

WOW...sorry to hear that! I thought that since I did not have the drawer issue with this, that all would be OK. It is getting close to 1 year, so I wonder if I should just let it go 'til HD? Not sure Sony would do anything. May call dealer.

Anyone else notice the incredibly defensive stance taken by the Academy? I was surprised at how many times they mentioned the following spiels:
"This is something you have to experience in a darkened room with strangers" (especially true in France  )
"You can't truly experience this unless you see it projected onto a giant screen"...
"You could never get a sense of this on a 7-inch portable DVD player" -- nicely botched by Jake Gyllenhaal...
I have news for them. The theaters in Los Angleles must be very different from my local theaters, in that:
I have no desire to bond with most of the strangers in our local theaters, many of whom have no idea of how to behave in public...
The last three films I've seen have made me wait outside as the grossly under-staffed employees attempt to get the theater cleaned out. When finished, the theater is anything BUT clean. In a few cases I've even seen them just turn the theater around WITHOUT cleaning it...
The comparison is NOT portable DVD player vs. film -- the comparison they need to be worried about is Qualia 006 vs. film, because we ALL know that the leading edge WILL trickle down. Today's Q006 PQ will eventually be available at a much lower price point. When that happens the theaters are DEAD, IMHO. Except for a small group -- who maintain the highest standards and make it a truly enjoyable experience -- a majority of houses will find it tough to stay in business...

I know that I used to go to the movies simply for the benefit of my kids...they enjoyed the whole candy/popcorn thing...
Well, my 4oz kettle popcorn machine arrives tomorrow and the Hershey's store in NYC is right across the street from my office (I stop in there on Fridays to pick up some treats for movie night...which is typically Friday). My kids now would rather wait for the DVD and watch it in the comfort of our own home with dear old Dad.
That is what Hollywood is petrified of, the public getting irritated with their outlandish salaries and their irritation with the cost of going to the movies, etc. Right now Hollywood gets so many bites at the apple it is unbelievable...first (and sometimes subsequent) runs in the movie theater...Video on Demand/rentals, DVD, DVD re-release, DVD re-re-release, etc.
I didn't get a chance to watch last night, although my wife had me record it on our DVR, but I was appalled to hear this morning on the news that all of the winners were asked to not thank all of the lawyers, managers, producers, etc. but instead to thank friends and family...trying to get back in touch with the public I suppose...that is so contrived and fake it made me that much more anti-Hollywood.
Yet, I still go out and buy DVDs, HD-DVDs, Blu-Ray DVDs... :o
Yes! We noticed the same stuff! Big Theater = Big Noise!

I just tried my 975 s/n on the Sony site and they say I qualify for a free replacement. What concerns me is that they say I will get a refurb. Am I looking for problems in trying to swap a unit that only powers off 3 or 4 times a year? Do you think this will start to happen more often?
TIA,

maybe if you speak to someone you may be able to demand a brand-new unit as opposed to a refurb...unless they don't have any new units left.
Good idea. I can ask. I did call and they said I should unplug it (reset it) for 5 minutes and try again. However, it will be 1 year on April 3rd and with this only happening every 2 months or so, the free offer will expire before I know.

Watching the Oscar's yesterday made me wonder if Mini Dive also has an entourage?Actually, I'm pretty sure that Mini Dive has a "posse" and is hangin' with the "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" crowd...
Ray, I found out this weekend who paid over 50K for the STARTING SLOT IN the upcoming 2006 TOYOTA PRO/CELEBRITY RACE... He’s just some local L.A. business guy that is a Champ Car fanatic. That still boggles my mind. Can you imagine if his car doesn’t pass tech inspection ? Did I mention there may be a Qualia gathering at the race? Thanks stew! :)Wow -- $50K for an opportunity to get WHIPPED by the pros? Bet he could get Tommy Kendall, Boris Said, or another top driver to give him several days of one-on-one track instruction for that amount -- INCLUDING the track rental...
BRTIII and MM... I just tried my 975 s/n on the Sony site and they say I qualify for a free replacement. What concerns me is that they say I will get a refurb. Am I looking for problems in trying to swap a unit that only powers off 3 or 4 times a year? Do you think this will start to happen more often?Interesting; could you provide a link? I wouldn't mind getting my 975 switched out for a reliable unit I could use in the garage (after burning the F1 races onto DVD). I think getting a refurb that works would be better than having a player you can't trust...
Well, I never thought I would find it again...
BTW, the guy I spoke to had no sense of humor. I said that they can feel free to substitute a Blu-Ray. He said "No, they are not out yet". He missed the whole joke!
For the Model Number we need dvpns975v

MotorMouth777 03-07-06, 01:07 AM I find very few reasons to ever go to some nasty stinky theater since I have the Q. I think Hollywood can make more money by selling me new releases at a higher amount and after a few months they can charge less. Why let the middleman theater owner take such a big cut. My picture at home is much better than his.
The theaters have become less and less enjoyable due to peoples poor behavior, crowded, over priced etc.
It is bad enough we get to listen to silly retards trolling on the Q forums but worse yet, how would you like to actually sit near some dork like that (perhaps even our most recent troll) and listen to his BS in person. Maybe how the theater picture is not as good as he gets in his trailer park. Green blobs this, over paying that....blah blah blah.
Wanna bet..... his all time favorite movie.......... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111252/
aaronwt 03-07-06, 08:41 AM The theater only gets a 10% to 15% cut of the ticket sales in the first couple of weeks of a movies release.
This is true. A friend's father ran a theater some time ago. In most cases their bread and butter is the concessions. This may explain their bargain prices. ;)
BenDover 03-07-06, 11:33 AM Penton, no scoop yet on what is about to be announced/displayed at the upcoming 2006 Sony Line Show?
For those of you that haven't seen it, Sony has Blu-Ray up on its main webpage (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_ViewStatic-Start;sid=K776fYATZ5b7xsPst2Xwds8fUYW4QDMw8_w=?page=static/articles/bluray.isml&INT=sstyle-bluray-heroright-About_bluray&DCMP=sony&HQS=3_6_Blu_Ray).
Here is the summary of some of the stats of a Blu-Ray Disc, by Sony. For you video gurus, it states Highest Video Resolution: 1920x1080/24p, 60i, 50i. 1080i = perfect match for the Q006, correct?!
I've seen a couple of post about what Sony is going to charge retailers for blu-ray movies, but has anyone seen any actually for sale and how much they're going to street for?
No problem. Glad to help. Is yours showing as FREE as well? Didn't you say yours will not even turn on at all now?
P.S. Trolls only beyond this point...
I am talking about a dvd player...not the Q006.
No trolls were harmed during the creation of this message!

No problem. Glad to help. Is yours showing as FREE as well? Didn't you say yours will not even turn on at all now?No; mine is showing as a $180 charge; guess mine's a bit older than yours, perhaps -- is one year the cutoff? No, mine is still "functioning", but I took it out of my system and put it back in the box after it began attempting to devour my DVD collection. I was going to return it to the Good Guys -- just about the time they shuttered the doors for good... :(

Well if you recall the last time I posted a “scoop” a certain member of the CE press got his undees in a knot because apparently I out-scooped him, inadvertently, no less! :D
I haven’t really asked…. and I don’t plan on attending the line show in Vegas as a BIG race is coming up in a few weeks at Laguna Seca which is essentially the kick-off to the season and I’ve been having a difficult time in completely regaining my fitness level (since the crash  ) as we’ve had a bunch of rainy days here.
That being said, I can speculate. Since I think it is fairly common knowledge that the PS3’s launch will be delayed until the holiday season….

the Blu-ray player boys are not about to wait any longer and still plan on debuting their player “July-ish”.
So………..I expect there will be a player up and running for all to see with one of the actual first release Blu-ray discs……probably hooked up to the Qualia 005 or the non Qualia-version Bravia 46” job which is supposed to debut “October-ish.”(re. the non-Qualia 46”-I don’t know if that’s common knowledge or new info as I have a hard time keeping up with what is established public knowledge and insider info).
That’s about all I can offer.
Anyway, I still think it all comes down to renting TITLES !
I *may* follow the “thesirjay plan” and purchase both format players just to get some good movies in HD even though pretty much knowing that the HD DVD player will become an expensive door-stop someday if I don’t unload it first on e-bay.
For me, it’s all a matter of timing as to what TITLES are available when the TV broadcast season goes into reruns.

Oh, cool, I don't think I was aware for sure that they were coming out with a non-Qualia 46in LCD...does that mean it will be based on the tri-luminous technology found in the Qualia 005...sort of what I had expected/hoped would happen given what they did with the Q006 and its progeny.
I think a 46in. would do just fine in my den over the mantle, in accordance with the wife's wishes :) I'll have to see which flat panel technology will win me over come the end of the year (LCD, Plasma, SED??...). I don't see the "slim" SXRD as a true flat panel alternative and am quite curious to see if they can successfully accomplish such a feat with a large screen size.
As for HiDef DVDs, I say we form a company to build/sell the first dual format player/recorder!! :D

Well, for your timetable, in regards to SED (the first size available to the public is supposed to be 55”- of which Canon/Toshiba to the best of my knowledge haven’t even shown a prototype as of yet :( ), I see two potential stumbling blocks for unmeasured success given its contrast specs….
1.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7228439&&#post7228439
2. I doubt that the existing technologies will simply stand still as hopefully SED *eventually* launches. For instance, Sharp apparently has a display they use in the medical field that has a comparably high contrast ratio --which I would not be surprised if it surfaces one day in the consumer electronics market.

PM's brain cells are pretty good, as M. Andretti drove for the Woking boys back in '93...
I've heard Red Bull is having major problems with their Ferrari engines, and are anticipating major suckage this season. Oddly enough, a lot of people are speculating that Toro Rosso, the Red Bull #2 squad, will actually have an advantage over Red Bull #1. They opted to run last year's V10 engines and the buzz is that the FIA botched the "equivalency formula", giving them -- in theory at least -- an advantage over their V8 brethren. Here's hoping this benefits Mr. Speed, who is a good old Bay Area boy. Ironic, isn't it, that Red Bull -- an Austrian company -- is the driving force behind getting Americans into F1? Too bad that US companies -- like Anheuser-Busch and HP, for example -- don't put ANY of their F1 money towards sponsoring drivers...
Couldn't resist making personal post number 1111...

thesirjay 03-08-06, 10:33 PM Hmm so bluray won't leave my other tvs in the dust for now... at least not on the Sony titles...
"In an important aside, Don Eklund, SPHE's senior vice president for advanced technologies, said that Sony's initial Blu-ray discs — and all of its Blu-ray titles for the forseeable future — will be free of the "Image Constraint Token" that's built into the Blu-ray and HD DVD standards. This controversial digital flag instructs the player to down-res the video signal from its analog component-video outputs to a standard-definition image to prevent high-resolution recordings — but at the same time prevents viewing of HDTV images on any TV or device not equipped with a copyright-protected HDMI digital input. That would eliminate any gain in image quality for HDTV early-adopters who bought displays prior to two or three years ago, when DVI and HDMI digital inputs were introduced.
Eklund noted that Sony's key piracy concern isn't with analog HDTV signals but with the digital HDTV signal coming off the disc, which both Blu-ray and HD DVD are protecting with the robust Advanced Access Content System (AACS) endorsed by the Hollywood studios. If analog copying does become a problem down the road, the policy could change, he said — but for now, "we have no plan to implement the Image Constraint Token. All of Sony's titles will come out of the analog output at full definition." He added that other studios still have the discretion to activate the token for all or individual titles."
Alas the poor man's bluray player is now officially "hopefully here in time for the holidays..." per Sony's CEO.

so the good and the bad... but I am not willing to plop down 1k on a first gen machine that probably will be missing alot of functionality.
Shame they just didn't decide to stop the idea of ICT all together but instead they leave it hanging over people's heads... heck I loved the idea that even if they CHANGE their standards someday in the future our Qs would still be able to accept analog high def.
thesirjay 03-08-06, 10:34 PM fyi amusingly enough all 3 of my high def tvs are sony ... 36 inch XBR and a 61 inch rear projection round out my household machines.

The only German one in the Zechman household is your Humble Historian himself--Pennsylvania Dutch to be exact. You can make your own assessments of how noble I am.
And at the risk of alienating several of my fellow Qualians, I am actually a cat lover.
But any of you who are offended by the notion can take solace in the fact that I am also totally allergic to cats. :(
(Dog hair bothers me too, but far less so than cats.)
Mrs. Zechman, a dog lover, is of course sympathetic--but I'm also pretty sure she takes a certain secret delight in the knowledge that we'll definitely never get a cat.

Penton-Man 03-09-06, 12:41 PM someone should advise her to save 20K and get the ruby instead!
Nope.
The throw is not long enough and the bulb lumens are rather anemic for her situation…………and ALOT of people’s situations for that matter that desire a LARGE screen (not to mention how fast the sucker goes dim  ).
Nope... not long enough and... rather anemic for her situation... Are you by any chance suggesting that -- with Hollywood starlets -- size matters? ;) :D
BenDover 03-10-06, 03:08 PM Another grain of sand on the scale for HD-DVD (http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/03/10/fujitsu-siemens_proclaims_hddvd-blu-ray_neutrality/) side.
Well, the tech came out today to replace my light engine (for those of you keeping up, I had something "similar" to the green blob issue - bad uniformity). The tech did an excellent job considering he had to take the set completely apart (and I do mean completely). Very difficult job to do "in-home". However, he was patient, and allowed me to help (nothing new for me, mostly helping him keep track and holding things though - I've done quite a bit of this myself by the way on other sets, being an Engineer I can't help myself :D ). Anyhoo, it took him 2 hours to replace the wee tiny light engine. <drum roll> Which so far appears to have fixed the problem. Some very slight uniformity issues, but nothing I am concerned about (as long as this one holds up). I will say it again though, lots of work - wires, parts, tons of screws. He definatly earned his pay on this one. Another good thing came out of this. The old engine had one stuck blue pixel, and was misconverged about 2 pixels on the left side. This one has no issues I can see yet. Plus it's converged to within 1/2 a pixel all the way around. Pretty good, considering how big the set is (must be really good optics). If anyone has questions, ask, and I will eventually get to them (busy, busy). I must say however, so far, I am very happy with the results.
camchow 03-11-06, 10:56 AM I did noticed a little bit of the uniformity issue on my set
may be not a problem and do not remember it was there before or not
2 days ago I noticed that on the left upper corner there was a very slight yellowish patch
only saw it when it was in bright sky or white back ground
the right side of the screen was fine but seems to be brighter than the left side
I dont think is the temp related issue
ck with test patten and all color patten was fine
Penton-Man 03-11-06, 05:29 PM Purty good article here by a guy that attended the show that Donnie put on at the Sony lot…….

camchow 03-12-06, 09:53 AM this is a question for the Q owner that has umr calibrated their set
just wonder if umr or any one noticed any of the uniformity issue, like on the white or gray screen that was not all uniform at all area or at all corners, some area may be brighter than the other area

MotorMouth777 03-12-06, 12:51 PM Zechman,
OMG we could be related............. After my perverted forfathers were thrown out of Europe and once they got to America they were called "Pennsylvania Deutsch" (Pennsylvania Dutch) and (probably the only place that would take them).
Then bless their drunken german hearts they were kicked out of Pennsysvania and they decided to move across country............. or at least skip out on the debt collector. Some of the more hardy ones got all the way to the west coast and had to stop. Some with a little less moxie came upon the Rockies and said screw it, we are living in Denver. My worthless gaggle of brattwurst eating mutts apparently had no mechanical skills whatsoever. It would seem that either they ran out of dunkel beer, lost everything at the indian casinos or their wagon broke down because for some insane reason they settled out in the middle of this god forsaken prairie we call the midwest.
That must be why you see so many wagon wheels at the entrance to farmers driveways.......

UMR did not find any uniformity problems only a slightly high color temperature setting.
thestewman 03-12-06, 01:35 PM Just returned from scoping out a Sony 60' SXRD to see what all the green glob issues might be. I checked the unit for any screen uniformity issues and can say I found none. I even activated the memory stick input without any memory stick and the screen was clean from top to bottom and edge to edge. Looks like Sony has been able to clear up this issue at least with the current production.

I did the checking again, using the DVE disc and found everything was fine and did not see any problems
also ck the memory stick screen and was good

thesirjay 03-12-06, 11:32 PM Just an fyi on the color inconsistency. I found that I had pretty severe color shift ( to a dusky yellow) in the lower right hand corner of my Q when hooking it up to a computer on all white screens and the appearance of a flicker. The culprit turned out to be power save mode. Once I turned that off the screen was pure white from edge to edge and rock solid again, a shame since I liked the darker picture option but I thought I should mention it in case that may help out.
The day of hd dvd is approaching although I am beginning to get a bit of cold feet. First the lack of ilink is sticking in my craw, also the best buy is apparently only going to be selling the 800 dollar version, and last after hearing about all the problems they are having with their demo units I am worried about the build quality and testing.
So I think I will be holding off until I see a decent review (and a local store has the 500 dollar version). I hate doing it but odds are there will only be a small number of movies and if I hold out long enough for the dual format machine I may be much happier.
Dual format machine??
Is that for real or a product of an over active imagination?
thesirjay 03-13-06, 12:37 AM Dual format machine??
Is that for real or a product of an over active imagination?
Oops sorry all I guess I should share (I thought I had heard it in this thread). LG is seriously looking at a dual format machine late summer early fall here is a couple links on it:
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/03/lg-kills-blu-ray-model-considers-combo-player/
http://gear.ign.com/articles/693/693959p1.html
I don't expect to see them charging over 1k so it will be interesting. So far it is really sounding like the difference between the two formats is getting trivial so having a dual machine could definitely make sense and save me from having an expensive paperweight as time goes by (not to mention saving me an input!).
thesirjay
Nice suprise as I'm certain whichever format I would have I would have chosen would also be the one that didn't survive this format war.
Since LG has found a way around licensing issues involved with having a dual player machine, hopefully the other players like Denon and Pioneer will do so also.
Not likely that PS3 will also play HD-DVDs. :)

As an aside, BillP is very knowledgeable in regards to DVD players and appears to be following the current Hi-Def offerings closely and is an all-around good guy.
In regards to the many Blu-ray offerings, this may prove beneficial to those unlucky souls who purchase an allegedly bad player with something like green push and would like to return it for another comparable brand.

Well I wouldn’t get my hopes up too highly because I don’t know how this will evolve from theory into real world availability because I would suspect that there are some components in the Blu-ray machines that are proprietary and the Blu camp will make it extremely difficult for LG to obtain them in LARGE quantities if they perceive it as an under-mining maneuver.
Penton-Man 03-13-06, 12:36 PM Lol, somebody just P.M.ed me this and asked for some help with his purchase. So, if there are any Qualians out there familiar with this display please help out this fellow AVS forum member.

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?
1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young,
we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside
worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any
wiring that's not up to code.
3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
4. Rottweiler: Make me!
5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the
light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?
Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!
7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led
these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't
missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see
that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.
8. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm
bouncing off the walls and furniture. (how true)!
9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I
don't see a light bulb!
10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
11. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or "We don't need no
stinking light bulb!"
12. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
13. Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light
bulbs in a little circle...
14. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and
he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my
nails will be dry.
How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?
Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is:
1. ANY :) cat: "How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner and a massage?”
ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!
Dwayne...........All animals be good ! :)

thanks again!
thesirjay 03-14-06, 12:03 AM Glad to help out a fellow Qualian I know I was pretty perturbed by the uneven and noticeable flicker while in power save mode on static images hooked up to my PC. Hopefully turning that off will do the same fix for you - and luckily as the bulb ages the power save won't seem so necessary as you tend to dim up noticeably. In fact I am having to ponder how much longer until the "dreaded pop" occurs to me if its only 2000 hours I must be over halfway there.
thesirjay 03-14-06, 12:08 AM Time to pay for my next round of toys (the HD stuff). I have already negotiated with the wife for an hd dvd player (which I am now getting a bit of cold feet over). The cost? One 4 day trip to Paris. I will be off in the land of rioting students from this Thursday through next Monday. Anything interesting going on there other than riots? I have been to Paris quite a few times but lately things like the riots last year have conspired against my trips. This time I figure the students won't be too bad as long as I stay in Paris they shouldn't be shutting down public transit.
So far the plan is to do the usual as a bit of a keepsake trip. Probably the Louvre, a trip up ye ole tower, and a bit more museum time along with walking around the city endlessly.
The wife suggested the Moulin Rouge has anyone gone? I can't say that the movie wowed me too much so I am having to wonder if 200 dollars or so is really well spent going there, then again we haven't been to it yet and I hear the actresses love to give directions :).

but it was Penton paper well spent ! :)
as was that on the 006 :D

If I knew for sure that the Blu-Ray player had i.Link output, I'd be all set to buy one of those AND the Samsung BD burner for my PC!
--Dwayne
BenDover 03-14-06, 08:18 PM Z, I am not holding out hope for i.Link...given how they are really marketing the "interactive" features of these new formats, I don't see i.Link as being robust enough to handle that and I doubt the Qualia has all the necessary software implemented to be able to interact with i.Link devices at the necessary level.
I will be very interested to see a side by side comparison of the Q displaying 1080i source from either HD-DVD/Blu-Ray converted to 1080p and one of the newer Sony SXRD sets (that should, I hope, accept 1080p) displaying 1080p source from either of the two hi-def formats. I just don't think there can be that much of a difference when you are talking about 1080 lines of resolution to begin with; if the source is encoded on the discs in progressive format, all they need to do is a very simple "interlace" to output 1080i and then the Q (or any other 1080p set that doesn't accept 1080p) will deinterlace and reproduce the exact same result!
thesirjay 03-14-06, 10:45 PM Lets do the math.
$500 HD player = 4 day trip to France

It cost me a 12 day trip to Athens and Santorini (and an insane number of hours in the air). The finest hotel and finest room on Santorini (where Jen + Brad used to stay heh closest I will ever get to being in bed with her) and one of the finest hotels in Athens as well. Not a cheap proposition but heh I had been dreaming of that baby for a long time as I followed the thread b4 this one.
I get a pass on the bluray as well just a matter of when the sucker is available. I personally hope they do get the ps3 out first but I am beginning to doubt it I may have to survive on hd-dvd for awhile unless a dual format machine really does happen. Having two machines that are destined for the rubbish bin/ebay just doesn't sound fun especially when one of them will be 1k+.
MotorMouth777 03-15-06, 03:30 AM I don't care about HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray. I am gonna buy the first sucker that is available. I thought that Blu-Ray had this race sewn up but for some reason they are wanking around with copy protection to the nth degree and are going to be second place to this party. I got news for them. The guys that want to make digital copies are always going to get around their defenses. Its the age old contest between the missile and the armor. Guess who always wins in the end.
I really don't care who wins the format war. I just want the pretty picture. I still got a crapload of those Big Laser Disks...............
Hi guys. Guess what?
I was looking at my netflix account that I recently cancelled to report a lost dvd and there is now an option within the account page, to setup your account for HD-DVD.
My membership is cancelled so I would have had to restart it to actually go into that option, so I don't know what is in there.
thestewman 03-15-06, 11:21 AM More information from Netflix
This information is from the Netflix web site.
"HD DVD movies will be available to you at no additional cost!"
"There is another type of high definition format called Blu-ray, which is not yet available."
"We will carry movies in this format as well, so check back later this year!"
In your account information, Netflx now allows you to select the option of receiving any new selections automatically in the HD-DVD format if available.
Now all we need are the players and recorders.
finally got my new light engine installed after a 1 month backorder. i had the green vertical bars going along my screen. everything is great now. The tech showed me the cost of the light engine...drum roll please.......$5,700!. that plus the Q box (750.00) that he put in last month. i immediately went to a grey screen to observe color uniformity. much improved! i used to have purple cast on left side of screen and a greenish cast on the right. It's now much more uniform. screen actually brighter also. Very happy with results. 2 hour job. after this job, i have seen every part that exists in this set! the screws, my God, the screws. The tech said changing out the light engine in the Qualia was much more involved than an sxrd set and every other set he has worked on. Anway, all i need now is to get Joel Silver back over to the house to recalibrate.
BenDover 03-15-06, 01:01 PM finally got my new light engine installed after a 1 month backorder. i had the green vertical bars going along my screen. everything is great now. WOW, that is some serious "coin" for the light engine...you can buy nearly two GW SXRD sets!
BTW, over on that thread, some owners were having their "optical blocks" replaced and they had to send the sets out to get that done...wouldn't do it on the premises.
My first reaction is that the light engine includes the optical blocks...but I guess not.
BenDover 03-15-06, 01:02 PM More information from Netflix
This information is from the Netflix web site.
"HD DVD movies will be available to you at no additional cost!"
"There is another type of high definition format called Blu-ray, which is not yet available."
"We will carry movies in this format as well, so check back later this year!"
In your account information, Netflx now allows you to select the option of receiving any new selections automatically in the HD-DVD format if available.
Now all we need are the players and recorders.
You know, I don't subscribe to NetFlix, but the HD format war may prompt me to do so...this way I'm only stuck with the player if I choose the wrong team :)
Greetings, it's been awhile since I posted, looks like I missed all the Auditor55 fun. Good news from Netflix, by the way. Fascinating information about the light engine -- woe to any of us that needs a new one out of warranty!!!
Cheers
Seems pretty official...
From the New York Times:
TOKYO, March 15 — Sony said today it would postpone release of its next-generation PlayStation video game console until November...

the light engine does include the optics! (at least in the Qualia it does)

At $5700 US I wonder if Sony will refurbish the light engines to reduce the replacement costs.

hmmm, I wonder then whey they are bringing the GW SXRD sets in for service as opposed to conducting it in him...or is that more of that Qualia loving we paid for :)

My one-year date is fast approaching...if something catastrophic is going to happen, please happen now! :D
...but we have 3 years on the Q.

hmmm, OK...for some reason I thought there was something magical about the one year period...like no questions asked in the first year, after that you have to beg borrow and steal to get them to do anything other than change your bulb :)
Many announcements from Sony, including Blu-ray and SXRD products:

Thanks for the heads up and the link...now too bad there is barely enough information there to make heads or tails of what is coming!!
That anger isn't directed at you...SONY :p
Time may tell, I guess. I had thought that everything was covered for 3 years.

bernster2001 03-16-06, 10:00 PM There is a 3 yr warranty. If I have to pay $5700 for a repair after warranty expires, I would probably look at newer cheaper technology then available as an alternative to repair. I only have 2 years left on warranty. Is it too late to get extended warranty?
I did get an extended, and you can still get one. Especially since your original is still in effect.

bernster2001 03-16-06, 11:16 PM Who offers the extended warranty? I got my set directly from Sony.
MotorMouth777 03-17-06, 02:10 AM If anyone bought the Qualia 006 with their American Express card they automatically extend the manufacturers warranty by a year I believe. Could be two years but most likely only one additional year. Not quite certain how to enforce that extended warranty but I am 100% sure that it would be a Class A Cluster-fk dealing with Sony/AmX at month 37 and later. Lets just hope these things are built quality wise commensurate to the price.
If you used the card like me call AmX and confirm this benefit.
I did go through a special GE plan that even covers the LAMP! It was 5 YEARS AFTER the Sony 3 year for total of 8 years!
I may still have the PM I sent to many on this group. I can send it to you as well.
Yes, bernster2001 you have PM!

bernster2001 03-17-06, 06:56 PM Thanks
I got the pm. Sounds great.
kalberk 03-18-06, 02:07 AM This is my first post but I had my Qualia 006 since last May. I have had no problems and am thoroughly enjoying my Qualia as all of you are. I am interested in the extended warranty from GE. MPSAN, if you could send pm with info I would appreciate it.
It appears that beginning today, March 17, 2006, a pre-order (http://www.i4u.com/article5281.html) for the Sony Blu-Ray player can be made. Cost $1,000. Delivery, expected July.

I will only add: SONY = Soon Only Not Yet :D
If I can resist temptation/impulse, I want to wait until 1) there are enough titles available, 2) some professionals review the players (on both sides, from as many different manufacturers) and provide information on the HD side of things and maybe even just as importantly on the SD side of things.
That being said, Lady temptation/impulse and I don't have a good track record. One could equate it to PM asking for directions ;)

Though the PS3 with a Blu-Ray player has been delayed until November it appears Blu-Ray players and movie releases will follow HD-DVD out soon.
The story below has the Blu-Ray timeline for players, and the different models from Sony It says HD-DVD will start with a far less number of releases.
Warner delays, shrinks HD-DVD releases (http://today.reuters.com/News/newsArticle.aspx?type=technologyNews&storyID=2006-03-17T135539Z_01_N17256306_RTRUKOC_0_US-HDDVD.xml)
Done.

MotorMouth777 03-19-06, 07:19 AM Anyone know if Blockbuster is going to carry Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disks right away? I am not a planner so NetFlix has never been on the agenda. For some weird reason I like stalking the isles at Blockbuster looking for my next disk adventure whenever the fancy strikes.
I don't mind spending the bucks for a player if I have stuff to watch but not real excited to add yet one more power light to my growing armada of crap under the Qualia unless it does something great.
Where the hell is that Blu-Ray boat...........
MM,
If anything, I'll be waiting until new movie releases are in HD format. I don't really care to rebuy the same DVDs that I already have.
Impression I got was that Sony was going to rerelease older movies just to have HD content available on release. Well, that's nice, but what about new movies?
Hi, does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the "thumbscrews" that hold the bottom front panel in place? These need to be removed to replace the lamp. They can't be turned by hand and with my big (non-Japanese) hands, I can't get a coin in there to turn them. Appreciate any ideas -- this seems like a real design flaw unless I'm missing something. Thanks!

blasphemy! the whole point of creating the new HD formats is to get consumers to buck up AGAIN :D

you should be able to loosen them by hand. turn clockwise to loosen. they do not come out all the way. loosen until they dangle loose. now you can pull out on the panel to access the bulb.

Um, a quarter works fine, and that would be counter-clockwise :D to remove. The rest is correct (counter-clockwise if you look at the screw from below - same as most other things). Had mine off many times. It's a little scary getting the panel off as the screws tend to catch a little (make sure they are really loose) and the magnets are fairly strong that hold it on.
