Well I haven't bought one since the first aluminum slip case covered "Ultimate Editon" (skipping extreme edition, etc). I'll be happy when I can play a copy back on a player that matches (if not exceeds) what I can get over Charter HD.

I think either would be willing to help you out with your query.

If they are of no help, then you can always start a new thread in the general RPTV forum. :)

I've already started another thread regarding this, but i also wanted to ask current owners of q 006. I recently purchased a 006, and have yet to pick it up. But having heard of news of 1080p input on the 2006 sony line i'm reconsidering. So the question I ask you, Do you guys feel you should have waited for the 70" xbr2, or are you happy with your 006? And if you were in my position, what would you do? Thanks

Obviously a difficult question because no one has seen a 2006 70" SXRD. Trying to compare a real world television to reports of a television is tough. I think most here would tell you they're extremely pleased with their purchase of the Q006. First and foremost, many of us have had the pleasure of viewing a remarkable picture for the last year. There is also a feeling that the Qualia has better optics than the current 50"/60" Sony SXRD televisions.

However, technology improves with each model year. 1080p input, auto iris, etc. are nice enhancements. While I love my Q006, if I was buying today, I might just wait to compare the 2006 Sony 70" SXRD to the Qualia 006, before making a final decision.

I love mine. The picture remains absolutely awesome. The 006 has the advantage that you can be enjoying it today. However, IF the new 70" XBR ends up having a better image (which would have to be really really good to be better) and has better connectivity etc, then you should have waited.

I have no remorse buying my Qualia because this last year of viewing has been unbelievable. But if the new XBR is better then I may simply move the "old and busted" 006 upstairs to the royal chambers and replace the downstairs TV with the "New Hotness".

Hi,

I'm a new Qualia owner. It's been one week and we are amazed at the picture everytime we turn on the TV. I have some questions, How good is the internal scaler/processor? has anyone hooked up a Lumagen or VP30? My DVD player (Marantz DV8400 w/DVI) is mid-line and the picture is OK, not great. I was wondering if an external processor would help with SD and DVD sources.

In terms of picture quality, my blacks have a blue hue (slight) to them (mostly when they take up half the screen and start at the screen edge). Smaller black objects on the screen look fine. I thought the difference from CRT would be a slightly less black (more grey), not blue.

Hi-Def looks great, and if I'm lucky I might have Umr work his magic on the TV in May!

Thanks,

John

Even though I really like this show, for me, it’s always looked like bad HD and certainly nothing to show-off my 006 to my friends and neighbors.

I suspect the graininess is the result of a combination of the deliberate way the director chooses to film the show for “artistic purposes” and the preponderance of dark scenes which I’m guessing, really accentuates the MPEG2 artifacts.

To directly answer your question...............

Impression I got was that Sony was going to rerelease older movies just to have HD content available on release. Well, that's nice, but what about new movies?
Jim,
Sony Pictures has said that it “intends” to simultaneously release its movies on DVD and Blu-ray in the future. As to when this actually comes to fruition, THAT is anyone’s guess and I doubt they actually know themselves at this point. They are making a big deal (internally) of the fact that when the DA VINCI CODE (theatrical release in May- unless the trial in London changes things….I haven’t kept up with that litigation) becomes available on DVD, it will also debut on Blu-ray….and same for Memoirs of a Geisha.

So I would *guess* that when these two movies *debut* simultaneously on both formats THAT will begin the process for future movies from Sony Pictures doing the same. I don’t know about the other studios intentions.

I'm sure it was just your local cableco/broadcaster/sat provider simply forgetting to "flip the HD switch" ... I've seen this happen before on various stations and for different lengths of time, although 26 minutes seems to be stretching the incompetence :D

I'm in Long Island, NY and it was HD through and through.

I agree with you PM on the graininess of 24...I don't think I ever noticed it so much before the calibration.

JohnHi, John, and congrats on your new set!

A few of us on the Forum spent a great deal of back and forth on whether or not it was worth using external scalers to improve the image. The consensus seems to be that it might improve the quality of SD sources, but would not be worth the expense overall. Also, one of the companies turned out to be -- shall we say -- a bit of a pest, not unlike the little buggers that carry West Nile virus...

The very BEST investment you can make is to have Jeff/UMR calibrate your display ASAP. He does fantastic work, and while he's there he can give you some very detailed information on the pros & cons of external scalers...

What are your current settings? If you wander over to my webpage (see below) there are some detailed lists of settings used by reviewers and by those on the forum. Make sure that your set is in PRO mode, as the other settings can drastically skew the performance of the set...

I just spoke to a representative from Gefen about switchers and scalers. He was very helpful and interested in any input from consumers. He told me that Gefen was looking to market an affordable scaler with enough HDMI inputs to satisfy the new HD sources we have all been considering. Next week they will exhibit in Orlando, FL at the EHExpo that I may attend. If anyone's interested let me know who to corner about questions.

Agreed about the scaler. I was looking to improve DVD and SD pictures. My settings are from the ones posted. I plan on doing a DIY calibration this weekend when I get some time. Overall I'm very happy with the Qualia. Unfortunately I'm very unhappy with the video sources. Some HD knocks you over, some is laughable. SD is very hit or miss, mostly miss. DVD's are OK, I was expecting better. Again, look at a good source and it's amazing what this TV can do.

The "bug" video enhancer sounded good but the price was a bit high. I also questioned how good the crappy signal could get.

Thanks!

how do you have your dvd player connected, component? dvi/hdmi? is that model an upscaling model? if so, what resolution are you feeding the qualia?

with my denon 3910, i've repeatedly been asked by people whether they were viewing hd material or not...of course, *i* wouldn't believe it was hd, but it does look remarkably close to hd with a good dvd transfer.

It really points out things you never noticed before -- down to being able to clearly see the differences in optical clarity from lens to lens. Live by the sword, die by the sword, I guess...

Though the quality of broadcasts varies greatly, a good DVD player can make all the difference. BOOM! (http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/03/24/next-gen_hdtv_compensates_for_first-gen_hddvd/)

That's what I'm talking about...

...the fact that first-generation HD DVD players will only produce 1080 vertical lines of interlaced resolution (1080i) as opposed to progressive resolution (1080p) is immaterial, ...

But another way that consumers could solve the dilemma of how to get the optimal picture quality from a first-generation HD DVD player, Doherty said, is for them to purchase a modern HDTV display that can reproduce a 1080p image. Because the high-def signal is digital to begin with, he said, "you can in fact reconstruct completely the original frames, no matter how you communicate. So in fact, the difference over the digital connection is meaningless, and we're getting into a lot of areas of 1080p versus 1080i that, in fact, have no consumer difference whatsoever. ... :D :p

Same holds true for Blu-ray!

Penton-Man
03-24-06, 05:33 PM
Ben, it's a nice article but I don't understand your point?

Boom ?

That's what I'm talking about ?

Penton-Man
03-24-06, 06:00 PM
In other words, I think everyone here has discounted the 1080i vs 1080p hype in regards to the Hi-Def players, no?

Unless I’m mistaken, some people here originally only desired a 1080p input over HDMI so that they could potentially hook up a 4-5K video processor to the 006 to make their DVD’s and SD broadcasts look the best they could, right ?

I may be wrong but I think the biggest difference in P/Q between different movies and the two different formats will not be whether one is outputting 1080i or 1080p, it will still be how each one of these movies is mastered and the inherent quality differences between different players.

I expect to see some real fine ones and also some inferior ones once everyone has more experience with this new stuff.

Penton-Man
03-24-06, 06:05 PM
and the inherent quality differences between different players.

In other words, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the dedicated Sony Blu-ray players put out a nicer picture P/Q wise compared to the PS3 players.

This isn't any inside info on my part, I'm just speculating.

jb007
03-24-06, 06:39 PM
It's interesting because it is all digital, right? In other words, if the 0's and 1's all get there it should form the same picture, right? I've read that argument as it relates to cables anyway. However, we're all aware there is a huge difference in the images we view on different DVD players. Compare a DVD playing on a PS2 to one playing on a higher end DVD player. I'm in agreement with Penton-Man, I'm confident the Sony Blu-Ray Player will present a better picture than the Sony PS3.

Penton-Man
03-24-06, 07:59 PM
And in regarding to picking one format, (Blu-ray vs HD DVD), combo players aside –IF they ever come to market, I still think it’s purty darn hard to get around the fact that HD DVD still has only one film studio exclusively in its camp. So when things get rolling, they just aint going to be able to compare in the number and variety of titles compared to Blu-ray.

Plus, eventually, the variety of choices of Blu-ray machines compared to the other format will be another point to consider.

I think the 1080i vs 1080P thing is just marketing hype and it still will all come down to who has the most titles and who has the actual player with the actual features (other than 1080 output) that people are most interested in.

Now, if you’re thesirjay, he’s covering all his bases. I wonder if the boy ever survived the riots in Paris and made it home safely ?

Ben, it's a nice article but I don't understand your point?

Boom ?

That's what I'm talking about ?

all the people clamoring for 1080p input...it is pointless as the 1080i output by the player will allow both hd-dvd and blu-ray to faithfully recreate the original 1080p mastered program.

i think what people don't understand is that the difference between the players is not video quality directly, they are just different storage mediums...both will use the exact same audio/video encoding technologies...arguably since blu-ray will have higher storage capacity they can encode at higher qualities, however, that isn't what the extra space will be used for...imo

they are the same damned things, just different storage mediums that the two camps are fighting over to maximize their licensing revenues...

I think that when these hi-def players will REALLY take off in sales is when one simple thing happens and it don’t take no rocket scientist to figure it out.

When the studios start putting out the new movies in DVD format and Hi-Def format simultaneously (whether Blu-ray or HD DVD be your preferred player) and you can walk into your local Blockbuster or what not and have the choice to rent EITHER standard definition movies or High Definition movies, that’s when people won’t look back from their “Vintage” players and want to get one of dem High Definition players to match their High Definition TV whether its videophiles on AVS forum or Yee Honorable JoeSixPack.

"Qualians" will be clamoring for it very soon. No doubt, most people who bought the Qualia demand the BEST.

1080P will set the standard and be the BEST very soon.
Well I agree if you're a Qualian and happen to own an 004.

Now, if you’re thesirjay, he’s covering all his bases. I wonder if the boy ever survived the riots in Paris and made it home safely ?

Yep safely made it back on Monday. Saw some rioters on the Metro but luckily they were just commuting. They were apparently quite active very near where we were but we managed to miss them. Somehow being tear gassed on the Seine just doesn't sound romantic - I prefer the tears in my wife's eyes to be over memories not caustic fumes. Overall a nice relaxing trip went to versaille, did a river cruise down the Seine, and hit the top of the Eiffel Tower. This is like our seventh trip so it was a bit nostalgic and we didn't feel too rushed even though we only had a couple days on the ground (we left MN on Thursday night came back on Monday).

I am pretty bummed about all of the delays and the talk of dual format has me a bit torn as I really don't think that either format is offering a lot so far to differentiate themselves. If I could have one player that would do a good job I would be tempted because I definitely see better technology coming out in particular for sound codecs and when it comes to playing old standard def movies. Scalers will be a part of the equation I imagine and now that the movie studios are starting to realize that 1080 over component isn't the end of the world they may finally let us do quality upscaling over component.

Penton-Man,
I'm in agreement with what you're saying here. I was a bit amazed about the difference in titles between the two camps. Honestly, I thought the ones that were listed for HD-DVD were the one's I'd be more interested in. Then a few weeks later, Warner announced that they were going to support both formats. Now I don't know which of those HD-DVDs would be out in BluRay. Its looking like BluRay may win the battle before the first shot is fired, which would be fine with me.

I sure hope this article is way off base... If not the ps3 is pretty screwed and if they are foolish enough to incorporate it into the bluray standard they are dead in the water.

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/03/24/gdc2006_ps3_no_hdmi/

Quote
"Recently it was announced that the PS3 will use HDMI 1.3, which will use an expansion of the audio channels and offer Dolby TrueHD as well as DTS-HD. Current TVs generally use HDMI 1.1, which do not support these extensions and create significant audio noise when connected to a HDMI 1.3 device.

In the end, we do not know the real reason of avoiding HDMI in the GDC demonstrations. But it certainly highlighted that Sony has still work to do - not only to finalize the AACS spec, but also to accelerate the availability to HDMI 1.3 and to educate customers that they only can run HD video and audio if they have a HDMI 1.3 capable TV."

If they really aren't allowing HD out on basically ANY existing tv they have to be fing nuts. This is my PS3 - and boy does it have horsepower unfortunately I can't go over 10 mph or travel more than 2 blocks because there aren't any roads that are compatible with it.

thesirjay,

Interesting article. The bit about not having HDMI 1.3 capatible displays seems a bit odd. I would have thought that most of these systems have some backward capatibility to them.

Wonder how much of this also carries over to BluRay players.

Also, can't we just use HDMI for video and still use Coax/Opt. for the audio? I understand that the audio will be a big plus in HD and may resolve the dvd, dvd-a, SACD issue in that it will be all the same.

Umr calibrated my 2 month old 006 yesterday.

I really wasn't expecting a significant improvement. I scheduled it more as a verification than anything. I am simply blown away at the overall improvement he was able to deliver. Jeff was in my home for 4+ hours and even made adjustments to my Panasonic XP-50 DVD Player and Sony DVP-CX777ES DVD Changer. Everything is simply much more 3-dimensional and color true.

I would never have identified umr were it not for this thread. I had been a "lurker" here for most of 2005, part of my evaluation of successors for my Toshiba LCoS 57HLX82, which after 3 years finally flaired out in January. (To Toshiba's everlasting glory, they sent me a check for the full original cost in 2003.) I notice that many former refugees of the Toshiba LCoS migrated to this thread.

Umr knows the Sony Qualia 006 inside and out. He far exceeded my expectations.

PANASONIC ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST HIGH DEFINITION BLU-RAY DISC PLAYER’S AVAILABILITY, PRICING

NEW YORK CITY, NY (March 28, 2006) – Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company today announced the upcoming availability of the company’s first Blu-ray Disc player, the DMP-BD10, available this September.

Blu-ray Disc is the next generation optical disc format that features capacity as large as 50 gigabytes on a dual-layer disc and will be capable of holding high-definition movies, tens of thousands of songs, and extensive capacity for extraordinary video games and PC storage. Blu-ray Disc has the support of more than 170 leading companies including the top studios and consumer electronics manufacturers.

"With the DMP-BD10, Panasonic proves its commitment to providing the best high definition entertainment experience for the home," said Reid Sullivan, vice president, merchandising, Panasonic’s entertainment group. "Our goal is to focus on the total solution for an uncompromised high definition experience. In addition we want to ensure that the consumer experience is as easy as possible, so we’ve added EZ-Sync HDAVI control function to make it simple to connect and control multiple products, such as a Panasonic Plasma TV, Blu-ray Disc player and receiver. Plus, with the BD10 we respect the legacy content that consumers have in their entertainment libraries, including virtually all DVD and CD formats, as well as video and image formats."

The introduction of the DMP-BD10 is timed to coincide with Panasonic’s release of its first 1080p Plasma TVs this fall, which can make full use of Blu-ray’s high definition entertainment capabilities.

Pricing in the United States on the DMP-BD10 has not been finalized, but will be less than $1,500. Panasonic will also release a high-definition receiver that when matched with the Blu-ray Disc player will provide an unparalleled entertainment experience.

Cheers,
Martin

My $.02 -- don't do it! If there's a really noticeable scratch that is affecting your viewing, then sure, maybe. But if you attempt to polish the entire screen, I think you are asking for problems. Think about it, the way scratches are removed is by essentially sanding down that area. If you attempt to polish the entire screen, you may leave swirls or even change the optics of the screen, leaving you in much worse shape than you are now. :(

I am familiar with that polish for my pinball machines, but I would not use it on an RPTV. Many of the screens have a coating on the surface that could be damaged or the resulting surface may be more of a problem than you started with. If someone wants to experiment with their 006 it is their choice, but I wouldn't try it on mine first.

Not sure how they got there, but these smudges need to be cleaned. I am so afraid of touching my pristine little baby with any chemicals that I have neglected to do anything about it. The little duster thingy they give you won't solve this one, as it's a smudge, not just dust.

Any recommendations on a safe fluid to clean a slight smudge? Water? Monster Cleaner? Anyone?

Thanks guys, I trust your judgement on stuff, and didn't want to assume anything and hurt my precious :-)

When used on something as large as the Qualia I find it necessary to do the screen twice. After the first cleaning there are usually a few streaks; the second cleaning results in a 100% perfectly clear screen. That's probably no mean feat with the amount of screen we're talking here...

I used the Sony cloth and water and it worked very well.

I'm looking for some senior Qualian support here. I've had my Qualia for 4 months now, and I now have my first major smudges on the screen.

Cheers!

You forgot to include the Free Blu-Ray. At least that is what they are sending me with the two extra 006's I ordered! :D

Friends,

I just received an email from my cierge and they're blowing out brand new Q006's for $5,000 each!

Call your cierge immediately, to see if you can get the same deal for yourself, friends or family. At this great price, I'm thinking of opting for two more for my home -- then I'll have a Q006 in each room :)

I spoke with my cierge and he said these new Q006's have 1080p input via HDMI. He said there will be a retrofit made avaialbe for the Q006, and Sony will be providing it free to all owners as part of thier new customer satisfaction policy.

Happy April First ;)

I attended the Home Electronics Expo in Orlando and offer the following tidbits.

1. A Sony rep said that Blu-ray is coming in July, as part of a July 4th "Red, White & Blu-ray" celebration. He actually said that.

2. Same Sony guy thought that a 1080p input upgrade had or would be made available for the 006. I had to take issue with this one.

3. 10 reps polled re: 1080p/60 source being interlaced at unit or through scaler to be accepted by 1080i input display devices. Six said didn't know, 2 thought possible, 2 confirmed absolutely a can-do.

4. Most impressive demo - DVDO scaler vs competitor's model. DVDO rep said company working on 1080p content.

5. Nothing looked better than a 006.

Your Humble Historian just got back to the East Coast from sunny San Diego (Hiya, Joel!) where he was vacationing all last week while Mrs. Zechman was attending a conference for work. I had a lot of fun, and even managed to rent a nice new Audi (and I mean new--it had all of 9 miles on it when I drove it off the lot) and drove up to Disneyland on Friday. This was my first time in California, and I must say I enjoyed my stay.

Sophie, Did the DVDO have the new ABT102D-card? I know they are working on a 1080P scaler (VP40?) but they've added The Precision Deinterlacing Card to dramatically improve the 480i/576i deinterlacing performance of the iScan VP30 for SD which is self installable and for AVS members a low cost add-on. Just wondering if this is what you saw - I'm thinking of gettting the next gen SXRD but want better SD as a prerequisite - are Q006 owners saying you don't need a processor for SD? I found the SD on the 60SXRD to be unwatchable but found it's HD Movie display as the best. Any Qualia Owners use anything to improve SD? :)

westa,
I don’t recall anyone off-hand but, if there is.... someone, please chime in.

I believe the consensus is that everyone here has just about become HD addicts and don’t think that the added expense of a good processor is worth the investment for the limited amount of SD viewing that most people are doing esp. with Blu-ray on the horizon.

I am using a Gennum VXP processor within the new Anthem D2 to process all my video sources before outputting 1080i to the Qualia 006. I have been using the D2 for 5 weeks, and absolutely LOVE it. The Gennum processor allows for unique, per-input video settings, and cleans up the picture VERY nicely. My TV viewing is a combination of DirecTV SD and HD, and OTA HD from local channels. The SD viewing looks MUCH better with the Gennum in the path, and my HD could be eaten with a spoon. DirecTV is notorious for heavy compression of HD and SD signals, but the Gennum gets me a better picture than I've ever gotten before. Even my old VHS tapes, from a mid-range Sony VCR, look way better, and I am now able to tweak the chroma adjustment such that the picture is greatly improved. On the flip side, a well-recorded standard DVD sent to the Gennum as 480i over HDMI, then processed and sent to the Qualia, is simply stunning. I am seeing things I never knew were there.

It also didn't hurt that about 2 months ago, I had UMR calibrate my Qualia to within an inch of its life. Jeff was able to increase my contrast ratio from 845 to 3694, and my colors are so close to perfect it's insane (flesh tones especially). My gamma was nearly perfect right out of the gate, but the main difference was color exactness, clarity, and black and white levels.

However, just to be clear, I ran the Qualia after UMR's calibration but before getting the Gennum processor, for about 3 weeks. So, I was able to see the incremental improvements that first, the UMR calibration had, and then, the D2's Gennum chip had.

So, I have been through the valley of darkness, and let me tell you, the sunshine on the other side is VERY bright :-)

No rain and no syringe (from me at least!) ... lol Lots of boos for Bonds but I thought the crowd was, on the whole, pretty tame (and typically San Diegan in that way). I like that Peavy pitched to him - and Bonds hit him pretty hard for a gr double in the 2d, and came within millimeters of a HR later in the game - just a long fly but you know it was within ANGSTROMS of the right connection.

Still, the good guys (lol) won. One thing that made me sad, though, as a baseball fan was the number of signs held by kids saying things like "Cheaters Never Prosper." This whole thing is bad for baseball's future because we are making cynics out of the youngest fans...

But that's just my two cents. Now back to our regularly scheduled HD programming...

Well, with the Qualia 006, it was simply a 1:1 ratio for dollars spent.

For a freakin accessory, I’m told that I would have to multiply by a hefty coefficient !
Which probably means something like a worldwide cruise on the newest Queen Elizabeth boat……………..

Which means I would spend more time away from home rather than at home to enjoy the dang accessory to begin with.

Thanks Jim. It is a standard center hall colonial. We used to step out of the kitchen (back of house) onto the back deck. The deck was removed and the room was added (23'x28"). There is a closet extension on the second floor above the new room (6'x23"). This is why (after the 1' step down) the ceiling of the new room is 9" before it coffers (sp?) up to 11'. The second floor closet is above the 9' spot which happens to be directly above the 006.

The photo is from very early on - I cannot find the newer ones yet. The squares of paint were to help us pick a new house color (going with one of the greens).

Yes - those two grills are the rear surrounds (Klipsch KL-525's). These are actually what Klipsch offers for people who want/need slightly smaller front speakers than the KL-650's which of course I have as my fronts and center. I was told by dealers that this was the better choice for the rears. I have the KS-525's for the side surrounds.

The sheetrockers did not/forgot to finish around the rectangular holes so I asked my contractor to put this plastic-like trim around the edges to get me by. I may either have the edges finished off at a future date (more construction over the garage starting soon so sheetrockers will be back) or I am considering putting cherry shoe molding around the edges as I have some left over after the baseboards were installed. They would match the cherry windows but I am not sure if that is drawing too much attention to them.

The sound is GREAT but I still really need Umr here (in May) to dial it in properly. The room EQ on my Denon 4806 is very tricky in my case. Where is Jeff??

Dwayne - the wife is making me wait for the drapes/blinds - no cardboard allowed! :(

ron,

first let me offer you my congrats, it looks great.

umr will do a fantastic job dialing in the sound though i imagine it will take some effort given the room layout, contents and construction materials (lots of hard, reflective surfaces, but i'm sure umr is up to the task.

as for the large rear windows, go for some electrochromic tint (what the hell, seems as though you've spared no expense thus far :) )

great forethought on the 80 incher :D

oh, and as for the very large seating distance, i would hate to see you and your lovely family sitting on a hard cold wooden floor, how about a nice 'lovesac' ... www.lovesac.com ... really comfortable, kids love em, and they make a great bass trap :)

Thanks BenD - by the way - are you still mad at Comcast?
Expense - with what was spent we could have bought a small cottage on a lake! :o

Large windows - I have an interior designer making a double track drapery system. One track will hold an off-white shear fabric and the second track will have a nice, somewhat heavy fabric that will go well with colors in the room. Both will be hung high enough to also cover the transom windows. Not a complete blackout situation but close enough. Most movie watching is at night after the kiddies are in bed.

Daytime watching is not too bad at all even without drapes. The windows are double pane, argon filled with a low e-glass II coating. Per the window sticker - Visible Transmittance is 0.52, U-factor 0.30 and Solar Heat Gain Coeff. 0.31. Bottom line is that, even with direct sunlight, it does not wash out the picture that much (compared to the old bay window that I used to have which was removed when the room was added).

Cold floor - not going to happen with the radiant heat under the sub floor - floor surface is a nice toasty 80 F!

I finally can appreciate what all you guys have been gushing about!

FYI, my wife and I are both from CT. Me from Hartford and she from East Hartford. Our first house was in Milford.

Since family is still there we get back there but hate Winters and hot summers!
Not sure where you are, but take care!

It all started in the summer of 2004 - "Sony Jumps on the 1080P bandwagon."
My disease progressed to the Owners thread.
Finally - the cure has arrived!

Like a nervous actor standing victorious in front of the academy and countless millions I don't know where to start my long list of people to thank.
Jb007, Penton, Dwayne, DD and Mini, Kaduku, Motor, Color, nyey, Bernster, BenDover, brt3, mpsan... This is the first and only forum I have ever monitored - time well spent!

My addition is almost finished - waiting for window treatments, some more furniture, the outside deck...

My sister-in-law formatted a few pictures for me that I would like to share. I didn't have the camera handy during delivery as I know so many of you love to see the big box sitting in the driveway! :D

Umr is coming to visit here in May to fine tune my already stunning picture (and sound)!

Where's my Blu-ray??

Since the room setup dictates that I sit too far from the screen (16ft) I left room in the cabinet I had made to fit an 80" SXRD/SED. ;)
I will be spending time watching on the floor.

To all the critics out there - it might only be a tv but life never looked so good!

Thanks again everyone!

Did they simply go from analog to digital ?No, actually -- something between me and the source improved greatly, as last year's F1 season was nigh well unwatchable. I have no idea what the change was, but they've been improving the data speeds by leaps and bounds. Not sure if that has ANY impact on video -- perhaps steps taken to ensure data integrity at high speeds have improvements on the video side???

MPSAN--I bought the warranty. If the current bulb life of 2000 hours (approx) continues, that's a year for me. $200 X 4 equals about the price of the warranty, so it was a no-brainer to purchase. My "policy" just arrived--took about 10 days from order to receipt and shows a warranty period starting when the factory 3-year ends, and ends in 2013 with in-home service. Since this set is going to be a discontinued item, I think this warranty from a recognized and well-run company (GE) is a good idea. Sorry I'm late in posting this, PM, I don't get to the forum very often these days. I won the Democratic Primary for TX CD 10, but not by 50% + 1, so I'm in a runoff on April 11.

The rare Ferari Enzo smashed into a power pole at 162mph, splitting the car in half and no one was injured. Now how do you do that???I think that almost qualifies for "Act Of God" status. The Enzo is built using a huge amount of exotic materials (read: brutally strong and very light) with a lot of tech from the Ferrari F1 program. If they'd hit the phone pole with the slightest variation they'd be dead ("they" assumes the presence of the imaginary German driver). As it was, they were moving in a way that caused the car to impact the pole laterally, and they struck the pole at EXACTLY the point where the rear substructure and passenger cell are connected. Most of the energy was dissapated in shearing the two structures; I'd love to know how many Gs of impact were required to split the two that cleanly.

This reminds me a little of the Paul Dana crash in IRL. A car spun and stalled on the track, Dana somehow didn't see the yellow flags, and he struck the stalled car at full speed (over 200 MPH). When I saw that I fully expected the driver in the stalled car to be killed instantly. But Dana ran directly into the largest, densest mass on the car -- the engine -- and was killed. The other driver didn't get much of the impact, and walked out of the hospital the next day.

Guess a few inches can make all the difference...

I thought I could wait, but I certainly can't wait *that* long...who knows if a dual format player will ever surface; there seem to be licensing issues...I'm going to probably get one of each, subscribe to Netflix, wait for a winner, then start buying whatever format wins and dump just one player. I think the first gen HD-DVD players are a steal...if there were only a single format, you can bet these players would be at least double!

It was confirmed by a supervisor before I bought it. I also quoted the paragraph where it is listed in my PM to you. The exclusion is for NON-Functional lamps like a refer. light. The thing gets cold even if the light goes out. However, the TV will not work without its lamp.

A little over a year ago, our own colortv (our #7 poster at the time, although he's fallen to #9 since we haven't heard from him at all since 4/25/05) went to Death Valley to film the blooming wildflowers with a Sony HVR-Z1U HD video camera (an upgraded version of the more well-known HDR-FX1) and posted some pictures.

colortv relates his experience with the Sony HD camera. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5364735&&#post5364735)
The next night, he posts the first of 5 pictures . . . (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5365829&&#post5365829)
and then adds a sixth the next morning. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5367455&&#post5367455)

I would have LOVED to be able to see the full-resolution versions of his shots. :(

Historical footnote:

There's a post from me right after colotv's fifth picture that seems a bit of a non-sequitor. At the time, there was a (now removed) post from reincarnate where he was crowing about deliberately making posts for the pupose of getting them removed by the mods, picking a fight with Penton-Man, and spouting off some nonsense or other about how he was just "pointing out the truth".

I see that he got his wish.

And, for those who are interested, a statistical footnote:

Once upon a time, I devised a way of counting the total number of words posted by each poster. Today I decided to combine that with the post counts to answer the age-old question: Who is the most talkative poster?

That is, who has the highest average number of words per post (this includes quotes from others, as that's really hard to filter out because AVS isn't very consistent about marking quotes correctly).

Of our current top-twenty posters, here's the breakdown:
1: Penton-Man: 1994
2: brt3: 984
3: BenDover: 692
4: kaduku: 647
5: mpsan: 551
6: divedude: 505
7: Zechman: 381
8: jb007: 379
9: colortv: 317
10: nhey: 287
11: sparkysj: 226
12: JimP: 206
13: MotorMouth777: 186
14: Joel: 172
15: Neo2005: 165
16: thesirjay: 160
17: umr: 145
18: Dilbert1: 143
19: thestewman: 102
20: hifi59: 94
21: RonB63: 92

(Actually, that's 21, but I thought I'd include RonB63 in honor of his recent official entry into the club, since it also turns out he's #21!)

If we re-shuffle the deck by number of words per post, we get this new ranking:

1: colortv: 182.01261829653 (57698/317)
2: nhey: 159.01393728223 (45637/287)

So what does this mean? Absolutely nothing.

Nothing except that I've found a statistic where most of us have Penton-Man easily beaten. :p

But since there's nothing served by beating up on our top poster, I'll throw him a bone.

rogo: 44.3 (443/10)

It's also a statistic where Penton-Man has rogo easily beaten.

But the all-time record for the most verbose poster goes to:

F23Coupe: 1113 (1113/1)
(http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6258011&&#post6258011)
. . . who broke the curve by quoting a long post from MotorMouth777 and only having one post in the whole thread.

More realistically, the record for the most verbose poster with at least 10 posts goes to:

editor58: 230.224137931034 (13353/58)

. . . which should come as no surprise, as he often spoke at length to educate us about professional video equipment, TV production, and video processing. (As did our #1 from the top-21, colortv!)

P.S. This post should drive up MY average a bit. ;)

BenDover,
I disagree.
THIS is a man with WAY too much free time. (Zech is simply doing his Qualia historian duty :D )

Well when you get yours with your free disc?, we certainly would like an extensive, thorough review!

I think people should just keep in mind that despite what Hi-def format you buy into, don’t expect to see the same difference between vintage DVD and Blu-ray or HD-DVD that you saw between VHS tape and DVD. It aint gonna happen…..at least any time soon.

Also expect to see some really nice Hi-def movie discs and some inferior ones, just like we saw with regular old DVD’s. Zee devils in the details.
