thesirjay 07-13-06, 05:31 PM The anthem d2 sounds like exactly what I want hmm now if I can only find a floor model for 95% off :). Thanks for the advice all I will definitely look into the Yamaha RX-V4600 although I have a feeling that the hdmi 1.3 thing will keep me from going 4 figures for a receive for the time being.
I paid $900 for my 4600. You might be able to find a similar deal if you are patient.

thesirjay,
I don’t think the HDMI 1.3 should at all hold up your purchase (esp. since people like umr, Mr.Whigggles, and sspears? all rather recently went ahead and purchased the current HDMI (receivers on the market).
Maybe I didn’t make myself clear in that last post, I didn’t strongly consider the Anthem D2 because AT THE TIME of my swap-out, I knew far less about HDMI 1.3 than I do now so that restricted my allocation of Penton-paper resources.
Now I’ve come to the belief that the purpose of the HDMI 1.3 spec in regards to audio is either of one and or two things.
1. Put HDMI 1.3 logos on the receivers and get people to buy a new “better” receiver.
2. Fix some of the HDMI connection bugs between various components (better than the current HDMI spec – but still far from bug-proof).
And alot of that belief comes from the expert knowledge of people like umr and FilmMixer(also an Anthem owner) – so I duly give credit where credit is due.
So, all you really need is a current day receiver capable of decoding multi-channel LPCM via HDMI 1.1 – and you’ve got choices NOW among several manufacturers at different price points – but I liked the Yammy 4600 because of its features in toto…..and I thought that maybe someday an Anthem would debut with more than one of those super-duper chips right around the time that I make my next super-duper display purchase.
(I *think* the Whiggle man and Stacey spears purchased Denon’s AVR-2807 – which is even more economical than the Yammy – but, like I said, I like my Yammy :) - and as umr said, if one’s patient, one may be rewarded.)

Honestly, when Lance retired, the Euros probably thought they were on Easy Street.
Tonight, I’ll bet some are eating their shorts. :D
To the uninformed, there is yet another American in yellow after arguably the hardest stage of the Tour de France. :) It’s a looooooooooong race but, at this point you would have to consider him THE man to beat. :)
i.e. Floyd Landis
(word of note, I rode with him errrrrrrrrrrrrrr behind him a couple times while he was racing mountain bikes before he switched to road as he’s a SoCal transplant :) )
Glad to see you made it home safely. :)
I see your favorite racer took the Indy win. :p

Penton, I just pray to God that some Frenchman doesn't head-butt Floyd out of a TDF win!
On the F1 front, Michelin were overly conservative after last year's debacle, + they had zero data from last year's race (unlike their Bridgestone counterparts). They brought a more aggressive tire that might easily have won the race, but counseled their teams to stick with the conservative tire...
Here's an interesting link that tells you PRECISELY what I think of Mikey Schumacher; scroll down to the comparison made between people who constantly push the limit (of themselves and their equipment) and The German. Still lovin' the Q!
pawrampe 07-14-06, 01:53 PM Anyone have an idea about the issue below?
Question about Lamp Timer Reset.
I follow these instructions...
The Qualia 006 is in the OFF mode
Using the Qualia remote control
Press Display once
Press the Number 5 once
Press Volume Up once
Press Power
Press Jump Three times
This takes me to "DEM Service"
NOT
DIM SER as stated. Am I in the right menu?
Add to that, if I go further...
The Qualia will power up and display DIM SER in the center of the screen
Then press the Number 2 twelve times
Lamp Timer should appear below DIM SER with the
number of hours following it to the right
Turn the Qualia off to exit
Official Sony Protocol for resetting the Lamp Timer
Continue From the above
Press the Number 1
The menu display should now be at Lamp Timer Reset
Push the Number 3
See that last "Push the number 3"? On my screen, number 2 is "Lamp Timer Reset". What am I missing?
If nobody posts before tomorrow, I will go through it on mine again and verify the process (assuming there is only one menu - not changed because of some firmware change).
pawrampe 07-15-06, 08:35 AM Thanks. I believe I purchased mine in May of 2005. Right now it has 3660 hours on it over two bulbs (and going dim again). I definately need to clean that piece of glass between the bulb and the rest of the TV. Last time I replaced I noticed it was very dirty but was afraid to touch it.
So that being said, any thoughts on lense cleaners (one for projectors would probably be good due to the heat...).
If nobody posts before tomorrow, I will go through it on mine again and verify the process (assuming there is only one menu - not changed because of some firmware change).
Warning - not allowing the lamp to cool before turning the set on can damage the lamp
Now that we have that out of the way (you will see why soon) we can discuss resetting the lamp timer. I like to cheat (or call it being lazy) so I modify the procedure somewhat. Also, please note that the 2/5, 1/4, and 3/6 keys when in the service mode are pairs (one forward, one back in that capability). So here goes...
If the TV is ON use Power->Display->5->Vol+->Power (within 5 seconds or you will be past the time the lamp is left on when power is pressed which would be bad - so practice if you want to try this method <- see warning above).
If the TV is OFF use Display->5->Vol+->Power (again within 5 seconds, but the results are only slightly bad - you have to wait, or do the above dangerous method to achieve service mode).
You should now be on the "Version Page" of the service menu.
Press Jump 3 times. It is a loop, so if you mess up, just keep hitting jump (slowly) until you see the screen says "DEM SERVICE". It should go through QM, WEM version, DEM and then back to the main version page. Once you are on the DEM page go to the next step.
Press "5" 3 times (this is another lazy thing). You should now be on number 13 which is the "LAMP TIMER" section. You could of course press "2" 12 times (the manual mistakenly says 9 times). If you go too far, remember the other key and go back (this is the 2/5 pair we are working with now).
Press "1" one time ("4" to go back, but there are only 3 items in this loop). You should now be on the LAMP TIMER RESET line which resets the lamp timer. so at this point you should be on a screen which looks something like:
DEM SERVICE
13 TIMER
2 LAMP TIMER RESET 0
Note: Due to firmware variations you may need to modify the steps somewhat, or the screen may look slightly different.
OK, if you got this far, you are ready to reset the lamp timer. Press "3" one time and the "0" should change to a "1" ("6" puts it pack to "0" - remember the number pairs). Once you have the lamp timer reset set to a one, press "Muting" and then "Enter" to save it. You can now go back to the lamp timer menu ("4") and it should read 0 now.
Almost done now. So you can either be lazy like me and press "Power" twice (about 1 second apart) and continue to use your TV as it was intended, or you can just Press Power once, and then wait 45 minutes or more to let the lamp cool down before you turn it back on.
I suggest you print this out, and practice it in your mind a little before doing it. Practicing the "going into service mode" in another room is also a good idea (no exploding lamps please). It really is not that difficult for the technically inclined, but if you do not feel comfortable doing it (if you can change the lamp, you should be able to do this), then please call a professional and let them do it. I would hate someone to damage their expensive TV (though I do this all the time and calibrators do it every day).
As far as cleaning the optics, I can be of no help there. I would be very careful though since some optics have coatings which can be damaged, there is quite a bit of heat involved in that area, etc. In other words, a good camera cleaner would probably work, but be sure to read up on it, and look around the Wild Wild Web for information :D Good luck...
Zechman 07-16-06, 11:54 AM Joe: An excellent explanation! Thanks from all of us.

bernster2001 07-17-06, 06:58 AM "Warning - not allowing the lamp to cool before turning the set on can damage the lamp"
Does this mean that if we turn our sets off, we have to wait before turning them back on in normal usage other than entering service menu?
You have a few seconds to turn the set back on and enter the service menu because when you turn the set off, the bulb actually stays on with the screen going black via no signal.
After that, the bulb goes off, the mercury vapor has to return to a liquid state before being reignited. If you try to reignite the bulb before its return to a liquid state, its a much harder strain on the system.
One thing I do (unrelated to the service menu) to help get the most bulb life is this. Most electronics and machines don't like short on/off cycles. If I ever have to switch the set on for a "quickie" -- say, to check the program guide and set up a recording -- I never turn it back off when I'm done. I use the sleep timer, and set it for at least 15 minutes.
MotorMouth777 07-17-06, 08:15 PM Or you can do what I do and just turn the beast on in the morning and let it run all day. No short cycles in my house.
I hope this bulb lasts another month (been 7 1/2 now) as I like to start out the new NFL season with a fresh lamp.............. Go Chiefs.
So that being said, any thoughts on lense cleaners (one for projectors would probably be good due to the heat...).
Hey there gang. Yes I'm still alive and kicking.
I thought I would chime in on this one since I recently had a VERY POSITIVE
experience by cleaning the lens adjacent to the lamp. I too had been on my
second lamp since January and was disappointed at lack of picture contrast so
I went to LensCrafters and bought a small spray bottle of lens cleaner and a box
of there lens tissues. After the Q006 had been off overnight I removed the lamp
and using a penlight flashlight to see the lens inside. It is on the left recessed in
in a box in the lamp cavity. I could see it was very dirty. I took two of the the lens tissues
and wrapped them over the end of my index finger and sprayed the lens cleaner
lightly in on it. I rubbed this all around the lens in that recessed box.
The tissue came out very dirty. I did this several times with fresh tissues until they
came out clean. I then did the same with a dry tissue to remove any residual
cleaner. I reinstalled the used lamp and turned it on very nervously not knowing
what to expect. It was like I had just fired up a perfect brand new Q006.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never seen it look so good!!!!
The picture now had depth and boldness again. Colors back to real.
I wish I had done this long ago. Live and learn I guess.
Hope this helps some of you.
Cheers,
Martin
Penton-Man 07-19-06, 08:47 PM Long time no hear, Tulsa ! :) Did you ever get your display problems worked out thru the powers that be ?
You know I always hesitated to use liquid anything on the internal stuff of displays because I was paranoid of residual streaking ?
This has to have come up with other displays, esp. among the calibrators out there like umr that have tweaked a bunch of different brands.
What exactly is the official or even the practical policy of using some liquid cleaner or just removing the dust dry with a lint free rag ?
JimP, you’ve probably played with a bunch of lenses in your time, what do you think ?
Dry is safer ?
Slightly moist is better ?

Man-O-Penton-Man, WHAT has happened to our beloved Floyd?
About the "lens cleaning"...
I've played with cameras pretty seriously for the better part of 30 years. I don't think dry cleaning would be a good idea, but you also have to be judicious in the use of wet lens cleaning solutions. Any product that's endorsed by a major camera/optics manufacturer should work for this purpose. I like a product that's packaged by Zeiss for use with their binoculars. A Qualia tech might correct me, but if you use this type of product, go slowly, and frequently change out whatever "cloth" you're using it should work just fine with no damage to the set. For the "cloth" I'd use optical grade microfiber; I've been using this on my computer screens for the past year or two and really like this product...
P. M.
Are you trying to clean a lens or the front surface of your 006?
If its a lens, what I've alway been told is you use one of those combination brush blower contraptions to get any loose particals off of the lens first. Then apply some lens cleaning solution to a lint less cloth or lens cleaning tissue. Lightly wipe the lens. What you don't want to do is to squirt the cleaner onto the lens which may find its way between the lens elements where you can't get to it.
As to brt3's suggestion about using a lens cleaner along with one of the microfiber cloths. If its one of those antistatic cloths, I believe it may already have some kind of solution in it as one that I tried to use to clean a lens left a residue. I went back to the lens cleaner and lens cleaning tissues to remove the residue.
pawrampe 07-20-06, 12:52 PM What we're cleaning (and I did) is the piece of glass that sits in front of the actual bulb unit. It is not part of the bulb unit, rather fixed in the TV (held by little tabs, so pay attention when cleaning).
BTW, I am going to pull the bulb every 3 months from now on. I am thinking that the dust that clogs the little screen below the bulb, on the bulb unit, is what shortens the life of the bulb. To clean it, remove the two philips screws, take off the screen/filter, and blow out. Don't blow it out with it attached to the bulb unit.
I looked at the dead bulb I have, and the dimming bulb in there, and in both cases that screen/filter was solid with dust. No wonder the bulb dies, it's not being vented anymore...!
Guys, I've been traveling all summer, but I continue to catch up and read posts here whenever possible (due to light summer posting and where we are in the cycle of the Q006, it hasn't been too difficult).
I've updated Post #1 to include the fine detailed instructions on resetting the lamp timer by Joe C5 and glass plate cleaning instructions by Tulsa1.
Take care and I'll be back soon! :)

He cracked. Not really that uncommon in a multi-stage race. In fact, often times you have a bad day on the bike immediately following a very good day (which is what happened here). One just hopes that the bad day occurs on a stage when everybody else is resting and tired also (i.e. like a flat stage).

thesirjay 07-21-06, 07:21 PM Just to let everyone know the mileage for dirt varies on the inside. I opened mine up expecting to see horrible things but was surprised to see no real buildup at all (I have had mine for quite awhile and on original bulb). This is despite being in a multipet household and having a decent amount of dust that gathers behind/on the Qualia. The glass screen also seemed to be perfectly clean (although I stuck with a more conservative "dust check" using a microfiber cloth). Perhaps had I been willing to go with a wet cloth and cleaner I might have gotten something but it really seemed to be quite clean in there. So don't be surprised if you find yours is clean as well - perhaps the Q's vary a bit in how well they filter their air intakes.

To clean the little silver screen, that is attached to the bulb housing itself, and allows air to enter the bulb, just remove the two philips head screws that hold the screen in place on the bulb. Clean that screen however you want, I just had to give it a good puff of air.
Then, re-attach to the bulb, and put the bulb back into the TV.
It was like I had just fired up a perfect brand new Q006.

Similar Results!!! The glass to the left of the lamp was dark with a reddish brown tint before cleaning. I've only had the set 8 months and I thought the degredation of brightness over time was solely due to the lamp age. Also cleaned the filter on the lamp while I was at it.
Thanks for the hot tip!!! I have a brand new set again!!!
Paul
Welcome back, Penton... :)

some one please tell me that is another possible explanation for Landis's results?
Penton-Man 07-27-06, 04:34 PM Well it makes no sense to me at all because general classification Tour riders have no need to take testosterone as a performance enhancing drug. The cheaters that do/did use this method of pharmaceutical enhancement were more of the type of athlete that competed in things like the 100 meters track event (i.e. for a sudden burst of explosive speed) – NOT someone who completes in something analogous to a marathon, everyday for twenty some days.
I believe that Floyd was getting cortisone injections for his hip pain during the Tour (which was completely legal). I would have to check with my Lab Director friend to see if cortisone injections could resultant in testosterone by-products during metabolism ????
I suspect that the positive findings in the first Sample (A) are either the result of the above, lab error, a physiological anomaly, or somebody spiked poor Floyd’s sample.
Tour riders are notorious for using performance enhancing drugs that relate to endurance but, this is a bulking agent and would almost be detrimental to Grand Tour riders that are constantly trying to lose weight to compete at the highest levels.
Just makes no sense, it would be almost analogous to a home run hitter taking EPO. What for?....to make sure he can get around all the bases and make it to homeplate ?
I did the lens cleaning thing too and noticed an increase in brightness. In fact the whites looked whiter.
I have tried to tweek the TV to little avail. I tired isolation transformers, exact power conditioners. Monster crap. No improvement. In fact monster made it noticably worse because it reduced the AC impedence of the line with series filters.
Alan Maher of perfect cable was right that what rear projection TVs want is low impedence AC power. This means dedicated lines, 20 amps outlets, etc. I have tried replacing the power cord with 12/3 power cord and it makes a real difference. Now I am going to change the outlet to 20 amp and the plug to 20 amp. I don't have the courage to change the IEC in the television to 20 amp hubbell.
Alan said we should also run parralel 14 guage wire inside the TV from the IEC Ac Jack to the power board. I don't have the courgage to do this. I would have the courage if I could get the back off the TV off without breaking it. Anyone had the back off their TV.
Alan also said putting black felt to absorb stray light inside the TV would help Rear Projection TVs. Does anyone know whether Sony has already used a light absorbing paint inside the tv to absorb stray light. Again, I would do this if I had the courage to get access to the inside of the tv.
By the way folks the Qualia 006 is still has the best picture of any TV out there (except maybe the new Pioneer 1080P plasma) and the Qualia projector. It sure beats the new Sony LCOS sets. They were sitting side by side at Magnolia audio in LA for many months with the same feed.
The new Sony LCOS due out at the end of the year will accept 1080p.
Has anyone tried the Samsung blue ray player with a qualia 006 and seen better resolution than standard DVD.

Tulsa,
You say you were on your second lamp. When the first one died, did it explode or do anything that would account for the lens being that dirty?
pawrampe 08-02-06, 04:23 PM Mine was filthy after the first bulb, but I was too scared to clean it.
As I saw the second bulb getting dimmer and bluer, I decided to pull it. Then I noticed the screen just below the lense was clogged. I took that screen off, blew the bulb out, and cleaned the glass inside the TV. Bulb does not explode, I think that any dust gets blackend onto the glass from the sheer heat.
Bulb death has been slowed, so that's why I am going to clean the screen bi-monthly. Let's see how much milage that gets me.
Zechman 08-03-06, 11:02 AM Has anyone tried the Samsung blue ray player with a qualia 006 and seen better resolution than standard DVD.
I haven't seen the Samsung player, but I did see the Sony player (a pre-production model) hooked up to an 006 at a SonyStyle store in my area. It looked as good as the best HD I've seen, but I didn't really have anything to compare it to.
A friend got an HD-DVD player and brought it to my place to try it out. We watched bits of a couple of discs and Blazing Saddles all the way through (an old fave of mine, though not exactly a good test for PQ). In this case we could directly compare HD-DVD to DVD (Serenity and Apollo 13) in the same player and there is definitely a difference.
In general, he and I agreed that the Toshiba's upscaling was somewhat better than the 006's, but the HD-DVD was definitely better than upscaled DVD. The easiest-to-spot differences were in the texture of clothing. For example, in A13 there is a party scene near the beginning and a woman wearing an orange sweater. On DVD it's just solid orange. On HD-DVD you can see the vertical ridges in the fabric. With special effects stuff it was harder to see the difference.
Not being an advocate, just saying what I've seen.

thesirjay 08-12-06, 12:19 PM Anyone else having issues with their HD-DVD Player? Occasionally mine will seem to fast forward through parts o fa movie. I haven't tried upgrading the firmware but I don't seem to see anything on the hd-dvds themselves that would be causing the read problem (I am using blockbuster ones though so they do get a chunk of wear but these have looked pretty clean). Ah well the joys of being on the bleeding edge. I am pretty bummed the combo player seems to have bit the dust. I would have liked to have one with nice audio electronics that handled both formats.
FredFlinstone 08-13-06, 11:04 AM Would someone please educate me, why would one spend 10K + on a 1080p display, when it won't accept 1080p input. I am not being sarcastic, I am trying to decide on buying a Qualia 006 or the new 70" XBR2 coming out this fall. From what I can see the Qualia has a better sound system, better front glass, a larger bulb, and a larger LCOS chip, but is that all superceded by not having 1080p input?

Until proven otherwise, all the items you mention and others you didn't mention equal a better picture. No one has proven that 1080P input is better or that you can see the difference from the Qualia 1080i input.
Penton-Man 08-16-06, 08:22 PM I haven't seen the Samsung player, but I did see the Sony player (a pre-production model) hooked up to an 006 at a SonyStyle store in my area.

Well I’m an advocate of Qualian-ism at its best.
That being, I would like to publicly thank Mr. and Mrs. Zechman for a fabulous dinner in their humble abode in Northern Virginia ….esp. after a rather trying day at Arlington National.
I suspect that the Z’s are on their way to Hawaii or getting ready to make the journey so Bon Voyage. :)
In regards to the HD DVD player described above, I'm still on schedule to purchase the 2nd gen. model which I think will launch in March/April or thereabouts. Probably get one right after all the series go into re-runs around May.
Penton-Man 08-16-06, 08:25 PM Concerning our purchase, of course. Not to worry, it appears that our Qualia 006 is still the Gold Standard. A frigin legend in its own time. :D

Thank you, and the pleasure was all ours and we wish you could have stayed longer.
Next time we're on the west coast we'll definitely be giving you a call.
And yes, we take off satuday morning, along with the elder Mr. and Mrs. Zechman (my parents).
I should have copious amounts of HDR-HC1 footage when we get back.

Thanks, PM, for the link to that thread. I smile every time I turn on my set -- still. :)
Cheers
ManWithAPlan 08-17-06, 06:39 PM Likewise PM, thanks for pointing that thread out...interesting stuff...
I have neighbors that would gladly pay for a seat in front of my Qualia for Red Sox games in HD on NESN via Comcast on my UMR-calibrated 006.
My momma brought me up right, so I can't take a penny from them, but I know they'd pay it. One guy has one of the new Pioneer HD plasmas, and for what he paid, the picture just ain't the same.
I thank you all on this thread for pointing me in the right direction in the first place and turning me into a Qualian...I truly enjoy this set more and more every day.
Cheers!

I bought the new Pioneer Pro-FHD1 (1080p) Plasma which has the very latest technology/cutting edge... this week. Does HD-DVD beautiful...but not much better than Qualia.
Other sources Qualia006 beats it hands down. Am returning it and getting a Qualia 006 for about 9.5k.
Newer is not always 'better' sometimes is just 'different'.
wow PM. When did you go to the HD-DVD camp? What did you do with your Blueray Pom Poms? :D

I just want total access to all titles in Hi-Def and since it seems that this war aint going to be won anytime soon, I guess I’m stuck with buying players of both flavors. :(

Good for you. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all. :)
Next step………………………….
Have umr calibrate the 006 to bring out its full potential.
Damn, I miss hard-shelled seasoned crabs from the Eastern shore, watching Cal Ripken play ball, etc. etc.

Interesting to hear the comparison of the FHD1 to the Qualia. I may be forced to use something in a 50" screen size that's plasma-thin (in a different room from Baby Q, of course) and I thought this would be the best plasma or LCD available. Dreaux -- do you think that display rules the flat-panel world? It's just so bloody tough watching ANY display after having your eyeballs recalibrated by QualiaVision...

You have seen the 2 TVs side by side and you prefer the qualia? The pioneer looked more film like and had better black levels to me in the store. Tell me why you prefer the qualia?
This amazing thread barely has barely has a pulse. But don't you want to improve the performance of your Qualia' by 15 to 20%? I have done so. My friends came over and couldn't believe how much the black levels have come up and how much snappier it is? I was going to tell you guys how to do it, but you ignore my e-mails like I was eavesdropping in on some private club. Hey, I own the qualia, doesn't that make me a member?

Now is not the time to buy either. The toshiba has a better picture than the bluray Samsung. Just check the August newsletter on the widescreen website where Joe Kane said the samsung was very soft. Lets all wait and see if sony gets it right. They are currently under fire from all sides so expect the player to be further delayed.

I saw the Pioneer and it currently rules the flat panel world. But it is way overpriced. Panasonic will have out its 180p plasma soon followed by Hitachi. The price will soon drop. If you can't wait you can get the 50 inch plasma Visio that retails for $2,000.
thesirjay 08-22-06, 10:42 AM Improving the Qualia - I don't know about anyone else but something about the Q makes me feel very protective. The idea of going "inside" seems too daunting. And lets face it the Q was built to an unwordly standard. Everything in it is built extra heavy and tough. That doesn't always mean that it was done in the best way for consumers (for instance that bulb casing is just silly in how difficult it is to take out and put back in correctly). This means that if you dare to play around inside it you may really do bad things (and void warranty of course). I haven't tried playing with voltages. Someday I might give it a shot but for now I am busy preparing for my first child. Thats a home project of a different kind but I have only 2 and a half months to be ready for it :). Thanks all for your great contributions it feels like I am among a band of friends. The Q for me is getting a lot of use as a computer monitor lately and it certainly does the trick. I may get brave enough to try doing a thorough cleaning on the lense (so far I merely did gentle swipes with a dry microfiber and found no dirt).

Amen to that, brother! My last RPTV was highly tweaked with the full black-felt lining treatment. It made a big difference. However, the Q006 is already so good, and I know how to spot something that's an artifact from internal reflection. I just don't think that tearing it open and modifying it would be worth the incremental improvement it might offer. I'll wait and let someone ELSE be first on that one... ;)
It's been awhile. I've been traveling all summer, but that's now coming to an end, and I actually started watching the new TV season (Vanish) last night on the Q.
I've read the latest postings, it's pretty easy to stay up to date these days. I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing though ;)
I took out the bulb to do a lens cleaning and found little or no dirt with a dry lens tissue. It was tricky getting it back in place. By the way, I'm still on the original bulb!
I have the HD-DVD player and am looking forward to receipt of a Sony Blu-Ray in -- presumably -- two months (although I already have some Blu-Ray titles ) I know some of you were hoping for one machine to play both formats, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. I'll probably opt for a new Mac Pro, once they start including a Blu-Ray drive.
I still love the Sony HD camcorder (HC-1). In addition to the newer, smaller HC-3, I see Sony will soon be releasing a HD-DVD camcorder that *should* permit the DVD's to be played back on a Blu-Ray player.
That's it for now. I hope you all had a wonderful summer (I know, it's still not over). Keep enjoying your Q's and I look forward to this thread picking up again as we near the new fall TV season, Blu-Ray, etc.

Dude, if you can post EXACTLY what you have done in regards to improvement and umr is able/willing to offer it as an additional service as a part of his normal calibration service (and he believes in the upgrades), I may be willing to go for it. :)
But to do it myself  , sheesh why do you think us Qualians have Royal House-sitters, Royal Pouches, and Royal Calibration Specialists  .
I’m a little amazed that brt doesn’t have a Royal RV driver.
He just must love the Driving Experience. :D

It sounds like these changes involve physical modification to the TV. I will not do those.

I could claim my RV is "The Ultimate Driving Machine", but that moniker's done been taken. Guess I just love to drive! Used to go cross-country twice a year by car and am WAY ahead of that after a couple of RV trips. Must be from all that time spent in the back of my Dad's Country Squire, bugging the hell out him with questions like, "Are we there yet?" and "How much longer?". As I recall there was no A/C on that car, which probably led to my innate need to roll down the highway with A/C, kitchen, and in-motion satellite TV + internet...

I would never or let anyone else touch the insides of my TV, unless it's a Sony technician fixing it. Talk about making your warranty useless or the possibility of freakin screwin it up.
Wow, there is still some life breathing in this thread! Happy to see Penton Man and Kaduku posting, amongst others. The Q006 still remains supreme :D
Anyone else here thought about trying to pick up a second Q006? Though it doesn't have the fully variable iris, it seems like some of the other performance parameters of our sets will not be surpassed in the immediate future...
JB -- better post again to get your post count off of "666"...

LOL.
Everytime I think of you, it reminds me of Robin Williams going cross country.
Honestly dude, the way the points race is this season I’m surprised you didn’t park the RV and hop a plane with the family to Turkey to watch the boys go *against time* i.e. counterclockwise.
I’d buy another Q in a flash, even with the newest display offerings currently available and soon to be available – it’s just that I need something bigger for the other room (addition) we built out back.
There is one BIG downfall in purchasing a Qualia 006, you tend to ignore all the other TeeVee’s in your household and gravitate …..thus spend most time in the room with the Q.

OK. Good idea. :p
BRT the Third...we just bought a new Class B on a MBZ Sprinter chassis! About 25 MPG ! This is cool...a Leisure Travel based on a van. Very easy to drive and it came with a Sirius radio. So I have been ignoring the Q for a bit except that last night my wife an I watched the DVD of RV. It had special meaning to us as we still need to go on our shakedown cruise!!
Now, since I bought a Sirius home docking station, I need to play with the antenna to get a good signal. It seems like anything outside the house is OK, but the antenna can not be indoors here in Oregon!
Good to see we are still around and ready for the new season. I just wish there were more 16:9 HD on the networks!
P.S. RV came with 16:9 17" flat panel!

BRT are you finding enough WiFi Parks? We plan to always bring our laptop, but don't know how often we can connect. Still, we at least have the 2006 two CD version of the Trailer Life CD's! Next may be GPS...thinking of a Pioneer AVIC-N3 is that good enough for us Qualians to buy?

My daughter's dying to see "RV"; they were playing it on one of my (solo) flights and I thought a couple of people were going to need the Heimlich...
I would be more into F1 if it didn't feel "rigged" -- one set of rules for Schumacherarri and another for everyone else
Agree about the Q; must... escape... it's gravitational... field...
I've simply lost interest in watching anything else...
If you truly need something bigger whatcha thinkin'? FP/Ruby-type setup?
BRT are you finding enough WiFi Parks? Next may be GPS...thinking of a Pioneer AVIC-N3 is that good enough for us Qualians to buy?Gotta have a EVDO/cellular card if you want to stay connected, though many parks now have WiFi. Search on AVIC-Z1; it's more Qualiappropriate. Optimal setup is Garmin 72/7500 for driver and/or CoPilot Laptop Live 9 for copilot. Both of the latter allow you to route according to RV needs (vehicle size for Garmin; overpass height for CoPilot). PM me if you want more details...

But first...take a look online at the Leisure Travel Vans Free Spirit. We bought the LSS edition.

I was scared shitless going into the Qualia. It is one complex beast and beautfilly wired. I think there a 3 fans in there and if one shuts down your TV won't come on.
But here is what you can do. If you have good house wiring (12 gauge) or dedicated outlets you should see some benefit by buying or making a better power cord. Any good stero store should have audiophile think power cords. Make sure any power cord you try is at 12 gauge or larger and try to get return policies if you don't see enough benefit to justify it.
It is not that hard to remove the screws to take the back of the cabinet off but first you have to remove the grey trim panel at the back of the TV. Then all you do is put adhesive black velvet from McMasters to line the inside of the back of the cabinet. The back of the cabinet is gray and it should be superflat back. Black velvet is blacker than any paint. This improves contrast. THis may void your warranty.
I can give more specific instructions if someone really wants to try it but you should at least have some talent in doing careful work with electronics.
Finally, there is a fan dedicated to cooling the light chamber. This winds up pumping dust into the light chamber to make that lens in there get fouled. The advice to clean the lens in the light chamber is a great idea and really makes a difference in brigthening the TV.
I recommend the Giottos Lens Cleaning Kit with Small Rocket Air Blower
Mfr# CL1001 • B&H# GILCK
For $16.95
• Rocket Air Blaster
• Retractable soft brush
• Pack of 10 pointed tip cotton swaps
• Micro-fiber cleaning cloth
• Bottle of lens cleaner
Here is a web address where you can buy the product:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=343088&is=REG
The reason I recommend this kit is because the cotton cloth won't scratch the lens and the cleaning solution does not leave any residue or film.
I had tried an inferior product first then decided to clean it again and you wouldn't believe how much more black came off the lens.
You need to do this carefully. First blow away the dust with the blower, then apply the liquid to the cloth. Put the cloth on your finger and move your finger to where the cloth is damp. Then start moving the cloth with your finger in a slow circular motion from the center out moving slowly and carefully towards the outside. Move the cloth as you go or you may grind some of the dirt you removed into the lens.
Again, thanks for this great idea.
Done it and it was worth it to me. Snappier and better black levels. McMasters sells adhesive lined black velvet makes the job easy. But taking the back off the TV, thats a scary proposition.
I don't blame you because you don't want to go around voiding warranties. I don't know if lining the cabinent with black velvet would void the warranty. Offering your customers power cords upgrades would still make sense.
I still can't believe that no television has yet dethroned the qualia. I prefer the picutre on the $30,000 qualia projector. I actually like the picture on the Qualia 06 better than the new Sony Ruby projector. I have looked in the TV and there appears to be a Carl Zeiss lens, a beautiful mirror. This baby is quality. Qualia rules.
You should not let anyone fix this television who is not from Sony. This set is way more complicated than most TVs and the delicate ribbon cables inside can easily be damaged. My opinion is that most TV technicians going into the set would break something else or forget to reattach some connector.
For what it's worth, I was at ABT today lookign at RPTV stands. They were selling a Qualia 006 demo unit for about the price of the new XBR2 70". I have never done research on the Qualia, so I dont know if thats a good price for a demo.
Again, just thought Id put it out there for anyone who might be interested.

I guess it is a subject thing. I do know the new Pioneer is not worth 9k.
On a really good source the FHD1 looked great but on a average source or SD it did not look nearly as good as the Quaila....in fact even on HD the Q PQ was as good which is amazing considering the Q is 70 and the FDH1 is 50.
I hear the Panny 58 is quite good.
I wanted a big screen....even looked at the new Samsung HLS-71...it was sharp but not more than the Q and nowhere near the richness of the Q.
Most people are looking for the best bargain and not the best PQ which would have been me 5 years ago, but now it is hard to go back to Ripple once you had Dom Pereion.
How you gonna keep 'em down on the farm once they've seen the city?

The Pioneer FHD1----If it were only 'close' to the Qualia I would have found a way to make it work.
When I put in a HD-DVD it looks great! Richer and more depth than the Qualia but not 'much' more. But for regular watching....hmmm ..disappointing!!
I think this Farrari (FHD1) was only made for perfect roads....when it hits a rough stretch it starts to loose performance.
The Qualia does great on the best roads as well as 'off road'.
When I was looking and posting on the FHD1 forum I had mentioned that I might be going back to the Qualia, I got 'well thats in a different league' or 'no kidding, if I could afford a Qualia, I would go with that too! Funny because now they are almost priced the same.
I work in Broadcasting and often shoot in HD so I know a good pic when I see it and the Q has an amazing picture for 70 inches.
I will be curious to see if the new XBR2 70 will have a better picture.
I just saw a refurbished 006 for $6995 at the Woodbury Commons Mall in Central Valley NY if anyone is interested in purchasing one of these before they are all gone.

Unfortunately, I have not asked her uncle for any juice. I read that she was going through a rough patch so I avoided the topic (not that he would tell me anything good even if he did know something).
Not much going on over here. I did renew a lease for a new A8L. This time I wised up and got the 7" monitors in the back of the headrests (kids love that stuff).
On the Q front - ho-hum, still turning it on every day to experience the shock & awe! :D

ManWithAPlan 08-28-06, 09:17 PM There must be something about people who own Qualia's also having Audi's...hmmmm....
I also own an A6 2.7T, after having owned an A4 2.8, and I must say I LOVE the twin turbos!!!!!! I am thinking about chipping it soon, to add about 60 BHP to it. Ahh yes, the gas mileage will go straight to hell, but oh how I will love coming off at the lights!!!
My real goal is to get one of the upcoming 2007 S6's...the V10 is gonna be nuts!!!!

Well, I wanted an S4 but got the A6 2.7T because our younger son just got married. We were starting to take him and his wife places. Now they got divorced and we are "stuck" with the A6! :D

mp,
You should have had a prenup on the A6 allowing for its disposition and a concurrent acquisition of the rather peppy S4.
Sorry to hear about your son - I hope he finds his soul mate.
Well, I hope he does too. In fact he brought her to CT just after he got married and we all were visiting Hartford where all of our friends and family live.
P.S. I like the prenup idea!! :D

Penton-Man 08-29-06, 05:05 PM Jb posted last week that he had started watching the new fall series stuff beginning with Vanished on the Qualia 006.
I did the same last night and enjoyed Prison Break and Vanished. (Aside – Prison Break and Cold Case are two of the best looking taped shows on the Q in regards to PQ in my opinion, of the stuff I watch).
Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know that the sound mixing done on Vanished is done by a fellow former Qualian (and/or his colleagues) who stayed in the Sony family but became a Ruby-ano.
Does anyone know who I’m referring to ?

Re the cars, the Audi S-10 looks like it will be great but the rap on it is that is has the wrong transmission. Needs the tranny in the S-4 but has something else so it is hard to get all the performance from that re-bored Lambo V-10 it uses. Still, should have a nice snarl off the line.
I almost waited to get one of those (looked at the A8 pretty hard) but went with something else.
Cheers

thestewman 08-30-06, 08:54 AM I just want total access to all titles in Hi-Def and since it seems that this war aint going to be won anytime soon, I guess I’m stuck with buying players of both flavors. :(

Blu-Ray camp can not get 50GB titles to work
Most new technologies have some teething problems as the early kinks are worked out, but it seems like the Blu-ray camp is experiencing more than its fair share of growing pains -- first the delays, then news that the supposed format-savior PS3 might price itself right out of the market, and finally the revelation that first-gen BD-P1000's were shipping with a picture-degrading chip. Well now it appears that there's even more bad news for Sony's pride and joy, as The Digital Bits' Bill Hunt is confirming what many people already suspected after reading their P1000 manuals: the $1,000 player, as currently configured, will be unable to support movies on upcoming 50GB discs. Hunt cites multiple anonymous industry sources in reporting that Samsung is still having problems getting 50GB discs to work on its machines -- production titles weren't even available to test before the players launched -- and that both Sony and Pioneer are experiencing the same issues with their upcoming products. Luckily for current P1000 owners, it seems that this incompatibility is of the type that will eventually be solved by a firmware upgrade, but until that time, movie studios have been forced to delay longer titles like Lawrence of Arabia and Black Hawk Down -- no doubt frustrating some consumers. With so much on the line here, it's clear that this issue will be resolved sooner or later; however, with the HD DVD camp already offering cheaper (and more) hardware, a larger media selection, and garnering better initial reviews than Blu-ray, it's not clear how much time is left before the so-called format war begins leaning decidedly in HD DVD's favor.
Talked to the manager of a local Myer Emco store and he said he had been to the Sony training seminar on the new Sony XBR2 line. He said he had seen the new XBR2 70inch. I asked him what he thought....he said the Qualia was still better than the new XBR2. The new XBR2 can not beat the optics and glass screen of the Qualia. That was welcome news because I was going to wait and look at the new XBR 70 before I bought the Qualia but after looking and buying the Qualia I had to ask myself...how can you improve on that! The Qualia still remains the 'Holy Roman Standard'.

Oahu. We toured around Honolulu, drove around the north shore, and even hiked up to the top of Diamond Head. I can't wait to look at that footage in 70" Qualia-vision!

An image, no doubt, that was seared into your cerebral cortex (and will take many years of painful and expensive therapy to remove)...
Quick Qualian Poll -- California legislators and politicians pushed Me & Mrs. 3 over the edge about a year or two ago. Now there are several pending issues that will probably force us out of state. I don't mind paying ungodly taxes if I feel I'm getting something out of the deal. In CA -- over the past twenty years -- the "payback" has been one of diminishing returns. Now, they're asking us to fund universal health care. Regardless of whether or not this bill passes, Cal--ee-fown-yah has lost us as customers. They are completely clueless; what happens when you drive out both big business AND high-income individuals, both of whom are a significant chunk of the tax base? I, for one, don't want to wait around to find out. With the mentality here at present, it's going to come down to a "let's eat the rich" mentality...
SO -- if you had a (relatively) portable job and could choose a spot to live, where would YOU go? The main requirements are:
Fairly temperate climate
Reasonable amount of sunshine
Ability to have 5-10 acres of land yet be reasonably close (1 hour) to civilization (movies, music, restaurants, etc.)
Can't be in the state of TN (sorry, grew up there) or any place in the South not open to intelligent discourse (I love parts of the South but don't care for black & white thinking)
So far the only place I've thought of is north of Seattle. Whidbey Island is north of Seattle, is the start of the area in the San Juans where the Seattle weather pattern ends and the skies brighten, and is reasonably close to Seattle. I haven't spent time there, it's only on The List at this point. My big joke with my Seattle friends is: "Where do YOU guys move when you get sick of all the California A**holes who've moved in -- I'll just move there and bypass the extra step!". So far no one's spilling the beans...
No question as we may do just that...
Sequim, WA...as in swim with a Q. It is at the foot of the Olympic National Park and is in the rain shadow getting less rain than anywhere north of LA! Do a google on Sequim Real Estate. Dungeness as well. FYI, a 3500 SQ FT home only a few years old on 5 acres is less than $600,000. We loved it there...so much to do and so close to everything! Also, there is NO State Income tax! Hey, go take a look...you can always Boondock in Port Angeles at WalMart! :D

Brt,
You might want to take a look at Ashville, NC. I have some friends who sold a $1m home in Southern California and moved there. Picked up a nice house on 2 acres for $400k for a 2,800sf home thats 8 years old. Beautiful place. Paid cash with their equity and the community is great. None of the things you are worried about. I'm going to pay them a visit early next year.
I'll be sticking around in Pasadena :)

Thanks for the tips. I did not know about Sequim and will check it out the next time I'm Seattle-bound. Asheville is a pretty nice place (though pansies like me cringe at the thought of an actual winter); my cousin lives there and you get a lot for your money. The idea of selling a CA house, buying something twice as nice for half the price, and having a nice dedicated HT with a Ruby (and Q006 for backup) has its attraction...
Despite my complaining about CA, the Bay Area has many good things that would make it tough to move. I do think we're out of here, though, because of a snowballing of certain factors that are negatively impacting the quality of life.
If I could only fit the Qualia in the RV -- then we could have 3 or 4 small spots around the country and alternate between them... You gotta have your priorities right! ;)

Penton-Man 08-31-06, 08:23 PM Folks, it looks like the price of the Qualia 005 is decreasing to an appetizing figure on a couple of online sites……it’s listed for sale for around $5600.
This could fit the ticket for a baby Qualia in say…… the bauthroom as one is taking a dump and has nothing better to do than ponder one’s navel.
Umr, have you calibrated any of these baby Qualias ?
I’m wondering if they ever lived up to the LED hype, after a umr calibration ?
I know that Charles Poynton is a big advocate of LED and he does love his colors but, did this baby ever truly deliver the goods ? I don’t even recall seeing an Owner’s thread for this display.

Seriously, though -- I am tempted! I've seen the BabyQ online for $5K WITH the stand, but the only time I saw the display (at the Sony Metreon SF store) it looked horrible. I realize it was badly set up, but have any Qualians seen this puppy properly set up?

I guess Q005s are rarer than hen's teeth; you'd think somebody's gotten a good look at one! Though it seems like one could be bought right, I think I'll pass and here's why. The Q006, while not perfect, is so far out there on the extreme edges of the bell curve that it will be awhile before it feels obsolete from a performance standpoint. LCD & flat panel technology, however, is still going through a LOT of technical metamorphosis; it's almost guaranteed that next year's $5,000 units will kick the kaka out of today's $10K units...

Well I believe Amir convinced MS to purchase one for his little working group and if I recall correctly he claimed that something was wrong with it or he was underwhelmed by its performance………but I tend to disagree with a lot of what he says just on principle….to bug him. :D
Other than that, I just don’t remember than AVS forum member stating they actually bought one.

I saw the 70 inch XBR2 at the LA Home ENtertainment Show. I think it accepts 1080p. The picture was almost, but not quiet as good as the Qualia but it will cost much less. I talked to a senior Sony teckie and he told me that the Qualia has better optics and a better screen so it is sharper.
whotony 09-01-06, 05:48 PM a tweeter in delaware has the Q 70" xbr1 for sale for about 9800.
they said only 1 or 2 tweeters in the area will have a xbr2 70" on display
due the the trouble it would be trying to sell the demo unit off.
Who will be the first to create FrankenQualia -- dismembering an XBR2 and tranplanting the good bits (dynamic iris, namely) into a Qualia 006???

Sequim is in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains...16" or rain a YEAR!
Agreed. :)
Stayed there several times as a recuperation stop after mountain bike races up in Whistler.
MUCH less rain than Vancouver (Never could figure that one out :o ).
Speaking of which...has anyone ever heard what happened to DiveDude?
She did, by the way, confirm that he slept on the couch that night. :p
Hmm. Well, if he's never posted on this thread or its predecessor, then your Humble Historian would have no way to know--I never claimed to be a historian for all of AVS!!! So assuming it is someone who has posted here, I think I will say . . .
. . . DiveDude.

O.K., shall we give our poor jet-lagged historian a couple hints ?
He is not divedue but, he does free-dive (and I don’t mean in the nudie  ) plus he’s rather well known as a connoisseur of Optex fiber cloth and a damn good guy to have on your side when the trolls come a wandering by our thread.

I originally guessed DiveDude because you (Penton-Man) once posted about his heart surgery (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5425861&&#post5425861) before he learned (or at least before he told us) of his cancer, leading me to believe that you'd met him IRL. DD has never revealed his real name online.
Likewise, I thought JB007 was a likely candidate because of the "disagreement" over who got the first 006 and his little interview with Sony. (Whatever became of that, BTW?) Because of that and your connections with Sony, I figured that you might have crossed paths with him IRL, too. I don't think JB has ever revealed his real name online, either.
So you see, there was some reasoning behind my guesses.
Next question?

Penton-Man 09-03-06, 04:52 PM So they're a helluva alot of Qualians runnin around here having the first name beginning with "R".
What the hell, is this some sort of genetic predisposition to acquiring an 006 ?

Couldn't agree more jb!!!!! I myself am looking to ditch my old DirecTivo HR10-250 and make the switch to Comcast cablecard a la Tivo Series 3....ahh yes, a fully functioning Tivo again, not the watered down DirecTV stuff with crappy HD...yeeeeeehaaaaaaa!!!
By the way, with any luck, the Series 3 will be out by about Sept 17th. The only question remaining is...how long til I need that external SATA drive for it?! These are good problems to have me thinks...
Cheers!
Brian
I'm hoping the external drive will be available for purchase with the TiVo S3. Might as well get it set the right way from the beginning. The Fall TV season is arriving.
Penton-Man 09-04-06, 05:51 PM Well I'm really looking forward to jb's and ManWithAPlan's evaluation of the TiVo Series 3 as mated with our 006's as I'm been keeping an eye on this puppy also. :)

I tried for a year to adjust bias/gains by eye. Even though I dialed in a decent image,no amount of effort compares to getting the set isf calibrated. Umr calibrated mine a few weeks ago and the picture is superb. As good as the picture was on the Qualia prior to calibration, it's sooo much better now.

My Comcast 6412 is the single biggest POS I've ever had (in the electronic sense)...
BRT I still have 3 RPTV's (still use them at times for SD as we can watch a show no matter which machine it was recorded on, and now use two 3412's that replaced my 6412's. The 3412's are improved but must be the 2nd biggest POS around. Also, I understand you can not take a 6412/3412 into an RV as you can NOT just play what you have recorded without the box seeing the Comcast connection!
P.S. Anyone know if the TiVo Series 3 will let you see shows across cat5 lines like the ReplayTV's will?
What I want is a Replaytv in HD!!!!!!

Yes, Series 3 will include Home Media Option (no extra charge), which allows you to watch a show in one room that was recorded in another (wirelessly or wired). So, internal transfers within your own LAN (home) are fine. As far as you being able to watch something at your house that I record over here, and transferring over the public Internet, no, that will not be allowed. The Hollywood/broadcast TV folks would not tolerate that, and Tivo is getting much traction by walking that line of being "friendly" to media companies. Replay would have been wise to follow the same tact, and they might have ended up differently. [My 2 cents, YMMV, all that stuff :-)]
By the way, you will also be able to transfer directly to a Sony PSP or video iPod as well, as you are able to today on a Series 2 stand alone Tivo...only now in High Def with Series 3, and with full support for H.264 encoded video such as iTunes makes available, etc. So, can take your shows on the road or for the kids, etc.

Good news. What about price and will the remote show that you watch be in HD? I ask as it can be done with the 3412's but Comcast has not enabled it. Also, with the 3412's even if Comcast did enable it the remote would only get it is SD.

Think my system could use a little sprucing up; a TiVo SIII would be nice, along with one of these: new Denon DVD players! (http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/DVDPlayersAndChangers.asp) I am still on the hunt for a killer deal on a DVD-5910CI, but I might just settle for a DVD-3930CI while I wait for the BluRay/HD-DVD exterminators to kill 'da bugs...

The best guesses have the initial MSRP at $799 for the Series 3. External add-on E-SATA drive will be an extra cost, for those that need it. As for the question about the "remote" Tivo being able to get the transfered movie/show in HD, yes, that is very much the idea, as long as the second Tivo is a Series 3 Tivo like the first one. Of course, if it is one of the older SD Tivo's, it will only get a watered down SD version of the show/movie.
This box will so totally blow away what anyone has from Comcast in terms of the 3412 or 6412, that the switch should be a no-brainer, as long as the $799 can be afforded. So, you reduce your dependency on a Comcast STB with little to no value-add, and you move the entire functionality to a PCMCIA-size Cablecard (actually 2 of them), and implant them in the Series 3, where you get boatloads of value-add functionality on a box that can act as a Media Hub for not only TV shows, but also broadband downloaded movies and other content, music files, photos, HD home movies a la Mr. Zechman's trips to Hawaii, etc.
The super nice side-effect is that you have now disconnected your umbilical-like dependency on a particular provider (Comcast in this case), so now, should you relocate and have a different cable company in the future, you can just take your Series 3 with you, and all your previous recordings are right there as well. The Series 3 makes you provider-agnostic, something that in these crazy days of cable, phone company, internet battles is not a bad thing at all. If I switch to Verizon FIOS from Comcast some day, I can take my show on the road, and switch seamlessly, thanks to the FCC and their mandate of CableCard support across providers.

OT, I know.
On Sept 11th CNN will broadcast 911 as it happened starting at 8:30 AM. I assume that is Eastern time. It is on the CNN Pipeline service that will be free.
I have always wondered what CNN must have looked like a few minutes before the first plane hit and what they thought...probably an accident. Being on the West Coast, I never saw the first part. But, I am not getting up at 5:30 and wonder if there could be any way to record it?

Back on the road for us Threes; looks like we'll do about 8,000 miles over the next 30 days. CA, AZ, NM, TX, LA, AR, AL, MS, GA, TN, NC, SC, VA, MD, and D.C, here we come! This time Elmo will be an integral part of our travels. Unfortunately, this means that -- instead of taking the Metro into D.C. during our 10-day stay there -- we have to drive into D.C. so that we can deposit the Royal Hound into Doggie Day Care. I've had people insist I should have my head examined for willingly jumping into the D.C. commute. I'm probably over-protective, but WTH...

Guys, I will share this with you for what it's worth...I am a history buff, and have always believed that events of this magnitude need to be understood, and that means relating them, however painful that may be. If we don't share them, we run the risk of losing sight of the enormous loss of life, and loss of hope that happened that day....and the lessons we might learn from that...ok, so here comes the big but....
But...I have to say, I have mixed feelings about this re-broadcast (strange, I know, for such a devout Tivo fan!). As someone who watched coworkers screaming on national TV to whoever would listen, begging people to tell them if their loved ones were seen alive past 9:30am and such, I can hardly bear to see that again. I went to work late that fateful Tuesday as well, so was watching in my underwear as the confused CNN newsfolks talked about a "helicopter" hitting the north tower...then, as I watched, the second plane hit the south tower, leading to the death of 3 colleagues of mine, one of whom was 26, and had recently started the first meaningful job of his life.
Sorry for digressing, that's more than you cared to hear I'm sure. It just occurs to me that as we wax poetic about all the nifty new gadgetry in our lives (myself included), and look forward to all the latest and greatest technical advances that make our lives more cushy, that there are some families for whom a single additional day with their loved ones would mean more than anything on earth.
I watch how people talk about it today...how they stress how heroic the efforts of so many people were that day. This is VERY true...there were so many people that risked so much to save others that day. But I guess 5 years later, I still can't get past the initial shock, that this had to happen at all, that we couldn't have prevented this from happening, here, on our soil, in the richest most advanced country on earth. To me, that it happened, that it happened here, in NYC, to some of our best and brightest, is a tragedy that no amount of twisting of history can blur. Call it idealistic, call it naive, call it wishful thinking...but I still believe, in my heart of hearts, that THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED....there, I said it. We have failed as a nation, we have failed as a people, that we didn't prevent this from ever happening. We talk about it today as if it was a foregone conclusion that this happened, and "oh, how heroic those firefighters and cops were that day". Well, again, they were heroic, they were incredibly self-sacrificing, but the overriding point that somehow gets missed these days is Why the hell didn't we see this coming, and why the hell didn't we take measures to reduce or remove this threat, so they NEVER had to give their lives to try to save others in those towers that day?
I guess it just shows that though we may be advanced in some ways, we are not achieving as a country the potential we have. Not sure of the value of any of this, but I couldn't help myself on this one...I will go climb back under my rock now :-)

I agree this is a painful, awful, horrific sight. I will probably not revisit that footage, nor have I been able to watch either of the WTC films. Hell, I have to close my eyes during certain parts of normal films (think Q. Tarentino) and can't watch modern horror flicks at all.
That being the case, I think it's hugely important to maintain the semblance of a free press in times like these. Between the FCC and the Patriot Act this is proving to be a difficult balancing act.
I simply believe in my right to turn "OFF" anything that might offend me, my family, or my friends -- and that it's important to err on the side of too much freedom rather than too little...
Painful topic, though important! Shall we move on?

Yep, great points, and I share your sentiments on a free press, and the importance of every individual's "Off" button in making our choices on what to watch, listen to, etc. In fact, I couldn't agree more.
Painful stuff indeed! We can and probably should move on, this is not the place for this I suppose. The talk lately of remembering Sept 11th got me going a bit...
I apologize to all, for moving us WAY off topic. I'll be better behaved in the future, I promise!

All they had to do was strengthen the cockpit doors. Problem is….. changes are seldom made until after the fact i.e.................lives are lost. :(
There have been several Hollywood movies showing crazies rush a plane’s cockpit door, it’s amazing that nobody ever took it seriously.

I feel you Ray! I too am getting disillusioned about living here in California. Can't have this, can't have that, can't have guns, and now they are starting to mess with my Harley, can't have it too loud! Next thing you know they will start messing with my Qualia, can't have too big a TV.

I wasn't trying to be hard on you, just trying to shift things back. It's a very difficult subject; that said I actually think your desire to tape it is a good one. I have been a little uncertain as to why some of this footage seems to have been unofficially "censored" over the past five years. I won't watch the replay, but would actually like to have the footage archived...
No problem..too bad CNN will not run it late OTA. I am not sure that the real time approach adds much.

Zechman 09-08-06, 07:49 PM Today I poked my head into my local SonyStyle store and discovered two things:
1) Where they used to have a Qualia 006 hooked up to their Blu-Ray demo, they now have a new KDS-60A2000 set. No price listed.
2) The Qualia, on display elsewhere in the store, showed a sticker price of $9997. Since this is a SonyStyle store, I am assuming that this is now the list price.
The new SXRD didn't look too bad, for such a little set . . . . :p
Maybe next time I get in there, I'll punch the TV/Video button to cycle through the inputs and see whether the given HDMI input shows "1080P" as the input resolution--and see if they throw me out.

I'm not so sure. While some may define flagship as the product the company places on a pedestal and promotes, others may hold it is the best product with superior performance. We know the Qualia line has been discontinued, so it doesn't make sense for Sony to continue to promote the Q006. However, if it still outshines the newer generation . . .

ManWithAPlan 09-13-06, 12:32 PM For those who were following this a while back in this thread, the Tivo Series 3 HD Cable Box is now available for sale thru tivo.com and in the next couple days at Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's and Ultimate Electronics, etc.
I placed my order yesterday, the box will be here Friday. Comcast is coming Friday to give me 2 cablecards to put in the Tivo, and then I call DirecTV and tell them exactly what I think of their HD quality :-) I am leaving DirecTV for good and moving to Cablecard thru Comcast for some serious quality HD viewing.
Yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
Cheers guys, hope all are well,

How much is Comcast going to charge you for the two CableCards? I assume these are still the type 1 cards and are only 1 way? ie: no OnDemand.

Ditto to what Brian said. My TiVo Series 3 will be here Friday as well, but TWC doesn't install until Monday. Good bye DirecTV.
ManWithAPlan 09-13-06, 05:36 PM How much is Comcast going to charge you for the two CableCards? I assume these are still the type 1 cards and are only 1 way? ie: no OnDemand.
So, Comcast gives you the first Cablecard in your household for free (no monthly charge, no nothing). Then, the 2nd card is 2.75 per month, and there is no option to purchase the card outright. The 3rd card would be another 2.75, and so on...contrast that to a 11.95/month Motorola 6412, and even with 2 cards, you save 9 bucks a month, money of course that immediately goes to pay for Tivo's monthly charge. In the end, net net, you are out like 3 bucks a month for this solution vs. having a Motorola STB or something from your cable operator.
For me, 3 bucks per month is well worth it for the functionality that this Tivo provides.
The cards I am getting are Cablecard 1.0 cards, but the Series 3 also supports the new "M" cards, or Multistream cards, meaning that in the future, a person would only need 1 actual M card and would still get the 2 tuner functionality of recording 2 shows at the same time, while watching a 3rd pre-recorded show.
You are correct, in either case, there is no OnDemand and no PPV or interactive guide with Cablecard 1.0. The interactive Tivo guide is WAY better than any cable company's guide anyway, but the PPV will be missed. For that, you would still have to call the cable company to order PPV, rather than do it through the easy interface type thing. There are tradeoff's for sure, but they are minor IMO, given the ease of use and convenience that Cablecard thru this device will get me.
As for Cablecard 2.0, it isn't even a standard yet technically, but when it comes out, it will support 2-way communication, allowing things like PPV and OnDemand. Until then, we "suffer" a bit I guess. It is yet to be determined whether the Series 3 will allow for Cablecard 2.0 eventually thru a firmware upgrade, or not. It will not phase me either way, Cablecard + Tivo HD here I come!

Penton-Man 09-13-06, 09:17 PM Fellow Qualians, do you know that a certain Qualian here (not me) fairly recently met with the President (and I aint talkin Sony) to chew the fat…..well sort of.
As an aside, I think that many audio pros would consider the Oval Office to be a near perfect set-up for a 5.1 sound system as you would just have to place all the speakers against the walls and find your sweet spot.
None of them troublesome nodes that umr has to deal with when he does those audio calibrations in the “normal” rooms of our individual homes…..well at least not as many, I’m guessing.
Now do I get my free tickets ???????

Penton-Man 09-14-06, 07:59 PM When I get them, I will give you a referral to whom many knowledgeable orthopedic surgeons consider to be THE greatest shoulder surgeon in the world - no joke, this guy is the BEST.(lectures all over the world, etc.)
May come in handy, someday. ;)
He is located in the L.A. area.(nobody from the Jobe group).
Did you at all consider getting 3 cable cards for your Qualia-Tivo set-up? Would that not allow one to record two different shows on two different channels via the Tivo and you could also watch a third show on different channel through the cable card inserted into the back of the 006.
All you would have to do is split the cable via a quality spitter….one end going to the 006 and the other going to the Tivo(just make sure your signal strength is satisfactory via the tech’s magic box, otherwise forget it). Unless you have a master processor like ManWithaPlan, theoretically everyone believes the P/Q of the channels thru the cable card into the Qualia is better than any DVR of any manufacturer be it Motorola, SA, Tivo, etc.

Great. I do not use PPV anyway, and will see what CC charges here. Every time I have called them in the past I get a different $$$ amount for the cablecards!

Any reasons as to why?,...or a link to the thread that discussed the reasons. Thanks.
Penton-Man 09-17-06, 08:08 PM Any reasons as to why?,...or a link to the thread that discussed the reasons. Thanks.
The Qualia line was essentially discontinued as a cost-cutting measure (at the highest level) in an effort to make the offerings leaner, meaner and more competitively priced.
(The line is still supported by the manufacturer)
Few (1 or 2? Owners) have had any problems with their 006’s which are still considered by some to possibly be the Gold Standard in displays despite the fact that they are getting along in age. They were essentially handmade with the first few coming off the production line in Asia in Dec. 2004, air-shipped over here shortly thereafter.
Our original author (or poster if you wish) jb007 received the first consumer Qualia 006 on these shores. No expense was spared in building this product (read the engineers got what they wanted and the bean counters had no say in the process :) ) from the exceptional and heavy  screen, to the optics to the correct video processing. ;)
I do not think you can go wrong with purchasing one. The only question is ….if it fits your budget and current needs.
Great prices can now be had on Qualia 004’s for those interested. :)
Hope that helps !

My credit card really needs to get out and play! Any first impressions?
ManWithAPlan 09-18-06, 11:23 AM My credit card really needs to get out and play! Any first impressions?
Here's my saga currently - Tivo screwed up many people's orders, including mine, and shipment didn't occur when it was supposed to. Long story short, it will now be today or tomorrow when I receive my Series 3 Tivo. I had to push out Comcast cablecard install until this Thursday, because of my work schedule. So, Thursday is now the magic day if all goes well.
By the way, I did go ahead and order the weaknees.com drive upgrade for the Series 3 and that arrived this morning. So, the new drive is 750GB SATA drive to replace (not add-on) the 250GB that Tivo currently ships with. This will increase my storage capacity to about 100HRS of HD and about 950 Hours max in SD. I know, i know, i'm a whore for disk, but I really don't want to be revisiting this anytime soon, and with every passing day, I'm more and more of an HD snob, so the extra room will come in handy. If I still need extra room someday after that, I can always use the external SATA drive capability that Tivo will be enabling on the Series 3 around November/December timeframe.
I'll let you all know how I make out on Thursday for sure! Fellow AVS'er gostan is getting his installed on Wednesday, he may be one to track if you need to know sooner. He's a great case study on this as well, because he, like me, uses the Gennum scaler in his Anthem D2 for all processing, and will be using "Native" mode from the Series 3, to let the Gennum do the scaling/deinterlacing.

Thanks Brian.
If you decide you need more storage I am sure that Penton can recommend a good behavior modification specialist!
I still have quite a few movies on my Moto 6412 box so I can certainly wait until I clear those before replacing the unit.
Thanks again,

Just got my TiVo S3 up and running. Too soon to give a detailed report. I just got back in town after getting stranded in Dallas changing planes yesterday, due to weather. I'm on my way up to L.A. very soon to catch MY First Place PADRES (hopefully) take another one from the Dodgers. Looking good with Jake on the mound tonight!
I ordered the S3 on 9/12 and received the dreaded email, but was able to pick one up Friday from Best Buy. No problems whatsoever with the CC install from TWC. I had been using two HR 10-250s, so going broadband for the connection is pretty cool. My HR 10-250s were upgraded with additional drives, so I'll be missing the storage!
ManWithAPlan, the ESATA drive should be activated and available by the end of the year? What's your source? That would be really cool.
Interestingly, when I got back to town this a.m., I see the HR 10-250s were finally upgraded software wise, I now have folders!
Oh well, all looking good so far with the TiVo Series3...goodbye DirecTV! :D

JB, awesome news! That's great, I can't wait until Thursday, when I have the same euphoria of leaving DirecTV behind!! Yeah, I see we now get folders, finally right? What a joke DTV is.
As for E-SATA, I am hearing rumors only at this point, on Tivo Community forums, but Tivo would be SOOOO foolish not to enable this in time for X-Mas, when so many people increase their viewing, need larger drive space, etc. It's an easy additional revenue stream for them. In the meantime, I've picked up the 750GB internal SATA drive, which will be super easy to install, no bracket or anything like the old HR10-250's.
Give us more details as you get time to settle into some decent viewing time on the new toy!

good bye Direct, Hello FIOS!!!!
i'm currently working on a project in Italy for a year, so I can only live through the S3 experience through the forums.
hoping by the time I get back to the States, the S3 will have more functionality and have dropped in price.
Congrats, JB. But I simply won't comment on the baseball game last night ... oy vey.
Cheers
Penton-Man 09-19-06, 05:33 PM I will. :)
Everyone together say..............No-Marrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!! :D
All I can say is, it was one game, baby! Back in first! This one's going down to the wire ... 3 good teams (SD, LA, PHI) and one has to stay home in October. Same with Detroit, Minn and Chicago. This is a great time of year ... to watch it all on my Q! :)
Cheers!

How about…..Back-to-back-to-back-to-back homers (did I get all the backs right?) homers in the bottom of the ninth to even the score with the Padres for those that missed the game on their 006.
People are saying it was The Greatest Game in Dodger Stadium History. :)
Penton-Man 09-20-06, 05:53 PM Well, since Ron has not posted any more pics of his beautiful wife introducing the Qualia 006 and I haven’t seen Jessica Alba on the Sony lot in Culver City for awhile, I thought it appropriate to post these videos in an effort to get us to page 400.

Anyone here been to Barranquia recently?
Last time I was there it was like……what I think the Gunfight at the O.K. Corrall must have been like back in thee ole Western days.
Penton-Man 09-20-06, 05:56 PM Are we Qualians hummin now ? :D
Zechman 09-21-06, 04:38 PM Yes 400!
...which I guess only goes to show that we are, indeed, slowing down.
It took us 10 months to get from page 300 to page 400.
But it took only 11 months to get from page 1 to page 300.
And yet the 006 remains the gold standard for the year 2-006.
No regrets whatsoever for purchasing this fine product.

ManWithAPlan 09-21-06, 08:51 PM So, I finally got Comcast to install my Cablecards today in my Series 3 Tivo. I have spent the better part of the last 4 hours rolling on the floor in giddy laughter.
This product is third only behind the Q and the Anthem D2 as the best A/V product purchase I've ever made. Besides the typical great usability of a Tivo product, this one has outstanding video quality, with the Native mode a lifesaver, along with the ability to send video out all outputs simultaneously (something that is very important in my MultiZone setup with the D2 as the switcher/distributor of it all). The THX quality sound is a nice added touch as well. I still have the Cablecard that I've had directly into the Qualia's Cablecard port, and have done some A/B comparisons of video quality with the Tivo and D2 in the chain and without. I have to say, there is no difference that I can see, despite watching many different types of channels. One of the best shows to watch for HD quality is ESPN SportsCenter. The clarity and reflections from the glare on the news desk that the hosts sit at usually reveals flaws on a lesser display. I find that the vibrance and clarity of the desk reflection is just as good with the cablecard thru the Tivo and D2 as it is with the cablecard directly into the Qualia. It's early to judge, but I am going to watch Leno tonight, as that is another great comparison to see if I see any differences.
I promised I'd let folks know my impressions as soon as I was live, and I can only say I am thrilled with my purchase, and would highly recommend this product to anyone in the market for an extremely high quality, well built, more usable DVR, for more efficient viewing of TV. It blows away the Series 1 and Series 2 boxes (I've owned many), and even blows away the HR10-250 DirecTivo that I never thought would get bested.
I'm off to call DirecTV to tell them they can have their satellite dish back!
-Brian
I am in agreement with Brian's assessment of the TiVo S3. I haven't had as much time as I would like viewing (busy going to see the first place Padres :D), but here are some of my observations:
Aesthetically, they did an excellent job with the box and remote. First, the box. Its profile is nearly half the size of the HR10-250. It has a brilliant piano black finish. The front OLED display illuminates beautifully. The fact that it displays what programs are being recorded on the front display is a major benefit to Q006 owners, since our display takes a few to get started and sometimes you just want to confirm what is being recorded without putting the stress on of firing up your whole system. I have been using the Harmony 880 remote, but the new peanut remote for the S3 is gorgeous, backlit and extremely responsive.
They have also updated the graphics just a bit from the HR10-250. The progress bar and menus now contain shading and highlights to give a more 3D feel, similar to the graphics on your computer, instead of flat. As I mentioned previously, the ability to schedule recordings online is a huge addition as well.
As Q snobs, we all appreciate solid workmanship in our electronic devices, as well as all the bells and whistles (features, graphics, etc.) The TiVo S3 does not fall short.
However, the most important factor is video/sound. As reported above, the playback on the TiVo S3 is perfect and the sound in Dolby Digital (THX) is pristine.
For me the switch to cable after 10 years with DirecTV has been wonderful. I use to get breakup, loss of picture to black and sound drop outs regularly on HD stations from D*. This has been alleviated 100% with cable (TWC) and the S3!!! This has been the biggest difference for me. Unfortunately, the CBS affiliate does not broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 in San Diego (what a joke!), so I may go back to recording (which the S3 supports) OTA from Channel 2 in L.A.
In the end, the ease of use and reliability of TiVo software makes the icing on this cake delicious. Now, if they'll just activate that ESata port for an external drive. I don't want to pop it open to replace or add another internal drive, but I need more space :D
In the end, the TiVo Series 3 is an excellent addition to the Qualia 006 :p
Penton-Man 09-22-06, 03:25 PM Nice reviews. :)
I think there may be a good guy to deal with (floating around this forum) for those that are interested in this device and have not yet made their purchase.
I'll see if he can place a toe here in the Qualia pond.

For beginners, DirecTV compresses their HD feeds. TiVo S3 can connect via broadband. You can schedule recordings online. The names of shows being recorded are displayed on the front panel. Software updates via TiVo, which in the near future should add ESata support (to add an external hard drive to increase recording capacity); TiVo 2 Go (to allow downloading of recorded shows to you computer for iPod or PSP, etc.) and Multi Room Viewing via broadband.

It's all about picture quality to me...I had the greatest satellite signal strength on earth (commonly 96-99 level), and I can tell you the HD channels on DirecTV look like absolute crap next to the same channels broadcast on Comcast in HD thru the Tivo with Cablecard. So, that's #1.
Secondly, I am tired of NewsCorp deciding if and when I am worthy to receive basic software updates that would make my life easier, and my TV viewing more efficient. They waited years and still have not yet introduced basic folders for TV shows, when all other Tivos have had this feature for years. They waited forever on home media, and still have not deployed it, and have no intentions to. They are a reactionary company, afraid of technology, with no vision, no ability to see where the industry is headed, and offer exciting new technology for the viewing public. They could give a **** about that. I can't stand a company that is too arrogant to know where their bread gets buttered. Companies like that tend to see a terrible demise.
Comcast may be a huge, monster of a company also, but they are hungry to dominate, they want to prove that they can snatch business from the over-priced and over-rated satellite feeds. They offer better quality, more HD channels, and they are hell bent on delivering what the new crop of HD enthusiasts want - great quality HD and features and capabilities that make the lives of their subscribers easier.
Tivo Series 3 includes home networking options. I can stream music and photos into the living room for all to enjoy. I can order movie tickets to my local theater without moving my ass off the couch, and then avoid the long lines when I show up to pick up my tickets like a rock star.
Soon, I will be able to download movies directly to my box from services, oh such as Amazon, Netflix, etc. These will be able to be moved onto a PSP or iPod for mobile viewing later.
Oh, did I mention it's sexy - it's built like a brick shithouse, it's sleek, piano black gloss with silver faceplate, the remote rocks, and it's quiet as can be, something very important after owning the noisy HR10-250.
I love it, this is a GREAT component.

Neo2005 09-24-06, 06:18 PM Jus nice to be still with you guys..... whatever happened to DD??
Can you watch shows in HD recorded on one series 3 on another one, much like the Replay 5040' s can do with ...if you will excuse the term...SD??
For beginners, DirecTV compresses their HD feeds. TiVo S3 can connect via broadband. You can schedule recordings online. The names of shows being recorded are displayed on the front panel. Software updates via TiVo, which in the near future should add ESata support (to add an external hard drive to increase recording capacity); TiVo 2 Go (to allow downloading of recorded shows to you computer for iPod or PSP, etc.) and Multi Room Viewing via broadband.

What you are describing is the Multi-Room Viewing feature (MRV to us TiVo geeks), which the stand-alone boxes have had since version 4, and which the HR10-250 is fully capable of if DirecTV would ever send down the software update.
In other words, yes.
EDIT: No, not really, as ManWithAPlan explains below.

P.S. I'm also excited about TiVo S3, but my cable monop^H^H^H^H^Hcompany really really sux. :(
P.P.S. I also became an HD-DVD owner this week, courtesy of the AVS PowerBuy. Next stop, NetFlix!

Actually guys, I have to jump in here - no, MRV is not available on the Series 3 software right now. Neither is TTG, or TivoToGo, the ability to transfer content to a PSP or iPod, etc. It is expected that at some point, Tivo will enable those features for Series 3, but right now, they couldn't get it approved by the CableLabs folks in time for their release of the box. So, they released without it, to get the box out the door, and they continue to work on getting satisfactory approvals from CableLabs to turn those things on. Keep in mind, Tivo has an encryption scheme for video when it is transferred off the Tivo Series 2. That encryption scheme was validated at the time by several key industry groups, including the movie industry, etc. Now, Tivo has to prove the encryption scheme all over again to CableLabs, and gain their approval for it. CableLabs is the working group that sets standards for CableCard, which the Series 3 uses.
So, we are all very hopeful, but to date, there is no MRV and no TTG in the Series 3. You can bet that is the topic of much working being done within Tivo corporate right now. The portability of shows and movies alone is a major area of interest for Tivo.
HTH,
Brian
Great, and I assume that all you need is CAT5. I had asked as I saw somewhere that although you could share shows, the sharing was NOT in HD due to the bandwidth.

I stand corrected (along with the original post).

That would not surprise me, as HD video is scratching at the upper edge of what 100Mbps ethernet can carry in real-time. 10Mbps is absolutely not possible and I wouldn't trust it to any form of wireless connectivity.
But with CAT5 cabling @ 100Mbps and USB 2.0 ethernet adapters, it would work okay.

P.S. Ahem, it is hypothetically possible (but unproven) that certain TiVo Geeks may (or may not) have actually done this with the HR10-250 using methods that are not permitted to be discussed on AVS . . . .

Dwayne, I can't follow all this TiVo Geek stuff.
Are you saying certain TiVo Geeks have done the dirty deed, the stand-up wild thing, the roll in the hay with this MACHINE !
I've decided to forego the 1st gen Tos and am planning on getting the A2. :)
Rob Tomlin 09-25-06, 11:27 PM I've decided to forego the 1st gen Tos and am planning on getting the A2. :)
Hey, PM, just realize that if you get the A2, it doesn't have 5.1 analog outputs, so you won't get True HD. That might not be a big issue to you, but thought you should at least be aware of it if you weren't.
See. I told you I keep an eyeball on you!
;)
Penton-Man 09-26-06, 01:24 PM Thanks for watching over me. :)
But alas, it is really not an issue as I have a receiver with HDMI (which I assume jb007 will be preordering from Sony soon if he hasn’t yet already). Mine is of the Yamaha flavor. :)
In regards to TrueHD, me thinks the jury still might be out as to its perceived significance and whether over time the ears or eyes will get the precious bandwidth, I guess.

P-M knows all :D
Yes, I placed an order for the Sony STR-DA5200ES, which is expected to ship next week.
Penton-Man 09-26-06, 01:44 PM HOW many HDMI "in's" does that have, for those that like to forego switchers.

I can neither confirm nor deny that my HDTiVo has 100Mbps wired ethernet connected to it via USB and that such ethernet is capable of transferring HD content back-and-forth to a computer (that I may or may not have) at slightly faster than the time is takes to watch it. I can also neither confirm nor deny that transferring content off the HR10-250 is noticably faster than transferring content onto it.

I connected up both (Multi-channel analog and optical digital--no HDMI on my STR-DA7000ES) and programmed my Pronto remote so that I can quickly switch between them to see (hear?) if I can tell the difference.

It has 3 HDMI inputs + one output. If you click here:
http://www.sonystyle.com/intershoproot/eCS/Store/en/demos/STRDA5200ES/
...and hit "Next" twice you can see a picture of the back panel for yourself.
As for me, I'm waiting for either a "7200ES" (because I don't want to step down in amp power) or a new Denon with HDMI 1.3 plus all the connectivity options that they have in the newest AVR series.
And once I add in the Blu-Ray player (the Panasonic is looking promising, otherwise maybe it'll end up being the high-end PS3), it'll be time to call UMR again.

Dwayne, I contemplated waiting as well, but decided to jump in because of the relatively low price (only 50% more than the Sony Blu-Ray player!). It's the eternal question, wait for something inevitably better or purchase now and enjoy today.
In regards to another umr calibration, I was thinking the same thing. I now have replaced my HR10-250 with the TiVo Series 3, added an HD DVD player, and within the next month, will add a Blu-Ray player and replace my Sony V444ES with the Sony STR-DA5200ES. However, IIRC umr calibrates each input of the Q006 with his special equipment. Therefore, does it really make a difference if one changes components? umr did go through the settings on my DVD player to insure they were set correctly, as well as viewing a DVD by eye, to make sure it looked good, so maybe umr can answer the question -- is another calibration warranted?
Additionally, umr did wonders with the audio calibration. The 5200ES comes with a microphone designed to help make the settings accurate in any environment, which may be OK, but likely will not be as good as a umr calibration.
Well, I am using 100 meg cat 5 and non-usb...in fact most systems have it on MoBo.
Several systems are even 1GB but I have never upgraded the switches in our house.

Who will be The One to make post #12,000?
Penton-Man 09-27-06, 08:21 PM I don't know but, where the hell you been ?????????????
I don't know but, where the hell you been ???
CA, AZ, NM, LA, AR, TN, VA, MD, DC so far. Finally got Elmo RV trained; am beginning to understand exactly why most people who travel by RV have dogs that can sleep inside Elmo's food bowl.
Went to DC and tried to see it all; just not enough time to do it all in a week (sorry, Dwayne). Since we're home schooling The Kid we've really tried to do a lot. l think we'd give it two weeks next time if we could...
Tomorrow we'll head through NC and SC on the way to visit family in Hilton Head, SC, for 4-5 days -- and will welcome the chance to do nothing for awhile. Then it's the Southern Tour on the way home; GA, AL, MS, LA, TX, NM, AZ, and -- finally -- home sweet CA home!
Sometimes I can easily check the thread and sometimes I can't depending on connection speed and the fact we divide it three ways. Best to all...

You can probably carefully copy settings from your Sony V444ES to the 5200ES. The new video sources are probably fine as well unless they have a black level issue which should be fairly obvious. All of the automatic audio calibration routines I have seen have serious problems. However, most will get the distances correct. I would not trust it for anything else when it comes to audio.
