You can probably carefully copy settings from your Sony V444ES to the 5200ES. The new video sources are probably fine as well unless they have a black level issue which should be fairly obvious. All of the automatic audio calibration routines I have seen have serious problems. However, most will get the distances correct. I would not trust it for anything else when it comes to audio.

Thanks Jeff. Looks like I'll be adding my name to the list for your next west coast swing.

P.S. Congratulations and fitting, post #12,000 goes to you :)

I am in agreement with Brian's assessment of the TiVo S3. I haven't had as much time as I would like viewing (busy going to see the first place Padres :D), but here are some of my observations:

Aesthetically, they did an excellent job with the box and remote. First, the box. Its profile is nearly half the size of the HR10-250. It has a brilliant piano black finish. The front OLED display illuminates beautifully. The fact that it displays what programs are being recorded on the front display is a major benefit to Q006 owners, since our display takes a few to get started and sometimes you just want to confirm what is being recorded without putting the stress on of firing up your whole system. I have been using the Harmony 880 remote, but the new peanut remote for the S3 is gorgeous, backlit and extremely responsive.

They have also updated the graphics just a bit from the HR10-250. The progress bar and menus now contain shading and highlights to give a more 3D feel, similar to the graphics on your computer, instead of flat. As I mentioned previously, the ability to schedule recordings online is a huge addition as well.

As Q snobs, we all appreciate solid workmanship in our electronic devices, as well as all the bells and whistles (features, graphics, etc.) The TiVo S3 does not fall short.

However, the most important factor is video/sound. As reported above, the playback on the TiVo S3 is perfect and the sound in Dolby Digital (THX) is pristine.

For me the switch to cable after 10 years with DirecTV has been wonderful. I use to get breakup, loss of picture to black and sound drop outs regularly on HD stations from D*. This has been alleviated 100% with cable (TWC) and the S3!!! This has been the biggest difference for me. Unfortunately, the CBS affiliate does not broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 in San Diego (what a joke!), so I may go back to recording (which the S3 supports) OTA from Channel 2 in L.A.

In the end, the ease of use and reliability of TiVo software makes the icing on this cake delicious. Now, if they'll just activate that ESata port for an external drive. I don't want to pop it open to replace or add another internal drive, but I need more space :D

In the end, the TiVo Series 3 is an excellent addition to the Qualia 006 :p

Hi guys - glad to be back...still LOVING my 006.

JB007 - I also have the Tivo series 3. There is one glitch - when I tune to certain channels I get a message that reads - The Tivo Digital recorder is unable to tune to this channel - select another input (or something to that effect). This message goes away after a second or two and the picture appears. On the TivoCommunity site, it is speculated this is an HDCP recognition error since it never occurs if you connect the S3 to your set via component cables. Do you get the same problem?????

I have seen a similar message in a blue box at the bottom of the screen that says something about the "DMR not being able to..." However, it only flashes briefly, then the picture shows up. Not a real inconvenience for me, especially because I typically only watch recorded content (TiVolicious), unless it's sports programming. Not a real big channel surfer due to limited viewing time.

I am considering the Tivo Series 3. I am really interested in the video and recording and playback quality versas the Comcast Motorola 6412P3. I know the Comcast Motorola 6412 p3 has numerous software glitches, fan noise and other assorted handicaps. Can any Qualia owners compare the picture quality directly ? Are you using Comcast dual cable cards. Were you using the Comcast Firewire output and do you miss tis feature ?

If they decide to produce this and it has the picture quaity of a Qualia 006, this might be for you and you can start your own JVC Owners Thread.

I saw the 70 inch XBR2 at the LA Home ENtertainment Show. I think it accepts 1080p. The picture was almost, but not quiet as good as the Qualia but it will cost much less. I talked to a senior Sony teckie and he told me that the Qualia has better optics and a better screen so it is sharper.

So I can purchase a demo qualia (with newly replaced bulb) for approximately $1,500 ($1,700 Cdn) more than the new SXRD XBR2 70" - is it worth it. Ongoing wonderful reviews on the qualia and it is here in Canada in stock while I would have to wait somewhat for the new XBR2 - anyone really been comparing the two? I have the money available but obviously do not want to waste it and the XBR2 has native 1080P and accepts 1080P input but the overriding picture quality???? Feedback would be appreciated.

I have the S3 with 2 cablecards, and, yes, it has replaced the Motorola 6412. I honestly don't really notice that much difference between the 2 boxes in picture quality. However, there is an incredibly big difference in the sensitivity of the over-the-tuner in the S3 compared to the OTA tuner in the 006. The S3 is much more sensitive. I get more over the air channels then ever (some I never got before), and the ones I did get before are now being received at a much higher strength. I find the difference amazing. As I mentioned in a message above, the one issue that bothers me is that I get a message banner that appears for a couple seconds when I tune to certain channels (no apparent pattern) indicating the TIVO cannot access certain channels, which is clearly an HDMI HDCP handshake issue. The banner does go away, and the channel appears, but it is annoying. This is not an issue if you connect the S3 to the 006 via a component cable.

I really never used the firewire connection cause of the clunky interface getting to it using the 006, so I don't miss it.

Still a little early to know. Most displays have to be fine tuned to the viewers room and taste which would take a few days.

From the early reports, the XBR2s have a lot of fine adjustments.(which is something I would like, even though many just turn them off)

There is a tweaks thread for the A2000 models, and there are a number of settings that look to be quite useful. However, I'm not sure they would apply to the Qualia 006.
for example, there's a setting to adjust pixel misalignment (which I have), and also a setting to fix the low pass filter effect that reduces apparent resolution.

I wonder what Jeff (UMR) thinks about that thread and if he is familiar with those tweaks. I know it's "dangerous" playing in the settings.

I purchased two of the Tivo Series 3. One will be hooked up Monday to the Q to take the place of my Moto 6412. The other will go in the bedroom hooked up to a the Panny 60U which is still in the box. I am waiting for the electrician to come put in a recessed outlet.

I will only post back if I find something new to add. Out of laziness I will probably just use the component cables that are currently connecting my 6412 to my Denon 4806 (for switching between my HR10-250 with D* and the new Tivo (Comcast)).

The Q is still amazing.

Quick question - I want to replace my 53" Elite after I get PS3 (mostly for the kids) and I read a not-so-great review of the new 60" Sony that's coming out. Any opinions as I have not (yet) gone looking through this forum yet? I also trust you guys more as you are, after all, elitists. ;)

FYI for any Qualians with an HD-DVD player. The second update disc just arrived (HDVD - 2001, first was HDVD - 1400). Good news is it will allow for multi-channel Dolby TrueHD, which I hope to actually see someday, among some other tweaks. Bad news is it wouldn't load in my machine. Toshiba is sending me a new disc and offering to give me an RA for my player if this one doesn't load.

18 months with my 006, three bulbs and nothing but a perfect pricture and absolutely no problems whatsoever. I am waiting for Rome to come back on to HBO..............got my Toga ready.

My brother in law bought the Sony VPL-VW100 SXRD projector for a theater room he just had built. Runs it on a 110 stewart greyhawk screen. I had thought it would be just like my Q picture but only bigger............. Not true. First it is not nearly as bright and the colors do not seem as real and vibrant as on the Q, almost washed out looking. Picture is not as crisp and does not have that snap to it I get from the Q. Kind of dissapointed really. I am sure you all know this but SD blown up to 110 inches really really sucks. For some reason he likes to watch a bunch of sports on SD......big but ******.......yikes. DVD's are OK. Really hope he ponies up and buys a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

After seeing his I would have to say I would have to find a way to buy the 004 or equivalent. I can move my couch to 8-9 feet on the Q and have the same apparent size as his 110 inch from 14 feet away but with a much much better picture.

In my opinion the Q still rules.......................

Your bro in law is using the wrong Stewart screen, the Greyhawk is a grey LCD proj screen(to enhance poor CR), which probably why the image looks so drab. Did he already have it from owning another proj or something as I hope he didn't buy it for the VPL? I used to have a grey DA-lite for my Sony VPL-VW's but soon as I first got a Qualia and now own the VPL-100, it had to be replaced with a Stewart Firehawk also at 110". Also, you have really have to cal the VPL (and the 004) before really viewing it critically. I'm delighted by the vibrant image put out by my VPL, much better CR than than the 004 to boot (I demoed the VPL against my 004). DVD's are a bit of waste of time on a large 1080 display to be honest. Ever since I saw the first 1080 demo on a Qualia in '04 I didn't want to go back to SD sources. I now had a HD-A1 running into it and the picture is superb.

Tell you BinL to get rid of that Greyhawk pronto and get a Firehawk or Studiotek130(depending on which suits his room better)!

Hi Neo2005,
I have had my 006 for about 20 months. It has around 5200 hours and is on the 3rd bulb. I would still be on my 2nd, but at 4800 I took the bulb out to clean the dust off and it wouldn't work anymore. I guess kind of like a night light bulb, they last until you unplug it from the wall

Big WB Divedude! Glad to see you back in the world of Qualians! I have missed Minidive as well.

I wish they would get the bluray to go over i-link so silly that Sony who loves inventing proprietary formats would stick i-link on the Q but yet not worry at all about having their players output to it :(.

I am holding off for the PS3 to try out bluray. I already sunk change into the brick that lives (first gen hd-dvd) and I am loathe to end up with another Alpha product (I have to stick the darn movies in 4-5 times occasionally before it will recognize that it has a movie in it). I haven't been too pleased by the HD-DVD player's functionality (slowwwww boots and annoying bugs like not recognizing it has a movie in it as well as occasionally doing a skip/speed up thing on seemingly fine movies). I imagine I will break down and patch my hd-dvd player soon and hope for the best but it seems obvious that its just a stopgap machine and that they need to get something much higher quality out on the market (dual format would be too much to hope for it seems).

As for the bulb thing I believe I am at 20 months as well on the original bulb. I have been loathe to play around with the service menus so no bulbtime. I opened it up to check for dust and didn't find any so life has been pretty good to me bulbwise. I think I will be purchasing a spare bulb 2 years is pushing my luck.

The first of August I went to Cocos Island, 350 miles from Costa Rica in the Pacific. This was my 3rd trip there in the last 15 years. I hadn't been there since 95 so it was another great place to return to :) Hammerheads by the hundreds. White tips thicker then fleas at a kennel. Rays and Mantas all over. Big schools of fish and even a Whaleshark just for fun. And that was just the first day ;) There were 2 pro crews from Germany and Sweden on the boat making documentaries in HD. All were using the Sony Z1. Damn I want one.

Probably the only good thing in his life right about now is that a certain Schumaker fella appears to have permanently lost the points race in F1…….otherwise he’s finding a place to park the Motor Coach or a place to dump its accumulated waste products.

BenDover – He got WAY too technical geek-speak on other threads for us Qualian folk.

Kaduku – bought himself a Harley hog and still lives to talk about his rides.

Zechman – Keeps up the Official Historian flame between trips to Hawaii.

thesirjay – a continued stalwart of the Qualian thread that tells it like it is.

thestewman – always watching and always helpful to fellow and future Qualians.

RobB(whatever number) – hasn’t posted anymore pics of his beautiful wife showing off the Qualia 006 and still refuses to give us the inside scoop on Ashley Judd’s love life.

Rob Tomlin – Although not a Qualian owner, he is a Qualian in spirit and continues to follow and support this thread.

Qualian poster girl sightings………….

Jessica Alba – I actually bumped into her several months ago on the Sony lot. Unfortunately, she was with her boyfriend.

Mrs. RonB – Haven’t seen anymore photos of her as Ron is apparently afraid she will go “Hollywood” on us.

Ex-Qualians – The only one I know about is bernster from Ft. Lauderdale who recently had to sell his Qualia 006 and go Plasma on us as his wife wanted more room in their place in Ft. Lauderdale.

Fellow Qualian secret rendez-vous – It was my pleasure to break bread with thestewman and Zechman and talk Qualia talk with real good guys.

I feel like I am a little late to the party but I would also like to welcome you back!

Using work as your excuse for staying away seems quite selfish! Do you really want to be like that mom who decides to get in her car and take off for a joy ride, leaving her 6 poor children left standing in the mall all alone?

Hell, at least you eventually turned the car around and came back. ;)

speaking of bulb hours, this morning i discovered that my q was NOTICEABLY dimmer....checked the bulb hours as i've been meaning to do forever now and discovered i only had 2695 hours...les than i had expected.

Fellow Qualians, please excuse any spelling errors or grammatical errors and much apologies to any Qualians or Qualian thread followers that I fail to mention but I’m typing this up rapidly under the influence of three glasses of vino in order to not miss one of my newest favor-ite TeeVee shows………………Friday Night Lights about a high school football team from Texas……….as my DVR is already full of recordings.

Well Zeus, I’ll tell ya, partaking of the grapes of the vine may be great for artistic (literary) impression but, sobriety does wonders for the memory. So in the spirit of continual assistance to get Neptune (errr divedude) up to speed, I shall offer a few more sacrifices that come to mind over my lunchtime.

Other Qualian News…………

ManWithAPlan – Still considers his Anthem Statement A/V Processor to be the ultimate addition to the audio/video enhancement of his Qualia 006 and since it contains a Gennum chip which I guess is similar to the Silicon chip, it must be good. I mean just think what silicone and its associate gels/liquids have done for breast augmentation. :D

Joel and sophie- Continue to post here intermittently with no reported Q problems. As a perk, they were both personally helpful to me with barrister advice/referrals. :)

Neo – I can’t remember the last thing he posted but he’s flying around this thread somewhere.

Nhey – always tweaking his 006 for better performance and adding new toys to it.

Most recent Qualia 006 add-on?
The Tivo series 3. Several people have purchased them and seem to enjoy them matched to the Q plus they enjoyed cutting the electronic leash with their satellite provider. One has reported an annoying handshake problem, I think.

Official Qualian calbibrator –umr.
He’s building a new home for his family ……..partly with the proceeds he earned from all those 006 calibrations, I imagine.

Right about now, I’ll bet he’s figured out that he can’t really use his old speakers as an optimal in-wall solution to his new home theater  , so he gots to purchase new speakers ! I imagine he will be announcing more around the country calibration tours to make more bread.

Qualian Pearl of the Day.
Speaking of speakers, I think that Jim Salk may be putting up for auction on e-bay a pair of slightly used HT3 speakers (if he ever gets the re-finishing done) in the next couple months.
http://www.salksound.com/ht3.html

Considering the fact that he hardly ever puts “b” stock speakers up for sale on e-bay – if you’re in the market you may get them at a steal. So if you’re interested in 5K speakers that some audiophiles claim rival the sound of 20-40K speakers and nearly everyone concedes the appearance and finish of which rival their best furniture in the house, keep an eye out.

Again if I omitted any Qualians or any components, tweaks, modifications that they’ve done to their set or any other musings, my apologies, so please chime in.

Ben, due to the high cost of this tech, they’ve essentially stopped all production/research in this area at the current time…………………………….
(despite the fact that such luminaries as Charles Poynton are a BIG proponent of this lighting tech- perhaps you can catch one of his courses if he comes to New York City..http://www.poynton.com/notes/events/index.html)

Which makes me really wonder that when/if SED debuts on the consumer level, how much the displays will retail for and how long they will survive in today’s market with all the other competition around.

If you search "Sharp LCD" on Google News, you may see an announcement they made recently claiming some outrageous contrast ratio (memory fails, but it was either 100K to one or 1000K to one) for a new broadcast reference LCD panel. People who've seen it claim it exceeds SED for contrast ratio and good blacks, but currently it is only being geared towards broadcast engineers (some former Q-thread members come to mind). If they can pull this trick with higher ambient light levels they may be onto something. I've never been a big fan of Sharp, but they are apparently pouring tons of cash into new LCD design and fabrication methods, have regained the "glass yield" advantage, and are determined to regain the lead they once had in the LCD field.

What that has to do with the Qualia 006 I have no idea...

;) :D

If anyone has info on the 005 vs xbr3's it would be good to hear. In order to move the 006 into my bedroom I would have to remove walls and the wife isn't too keen on that. The 005 would definitely fit a bit better.

Speaking of "Changes in the House" I am expecting a little Qualian (and no I don't mean the 005). My wife and I are expecting our first baby on November 12th. I am planning on picking up one of the new Canon G7 hopefully tomorrow to record the special addition :). I wonder if it will warp her to see pictures that rival reality at such a young age? Ah well I am sure they thought tv would rot all our brains (instead of just our wallets :) )

If anyone has strong camera advice (novice who wants a really nice picture without having to learn much) I don't mind hearing it :).

Congrats, SirJay!

Here's a tasty alternative to the 005:
52" Bravia XBR (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?sssdmh=dm11.91377&ProductSKU=KDL52XBR3&hqs=kdl52xbr3_tv)

The Canon G7 (do you mean G7; I can't find a G7s) looks like a great camera. One is on order for Mrs3; it looks to be a fantastic camera that's simple when it needs to be but sophisiticated if you want to get serious. Also, Mrs3 hates, abhors, and despises not having an optical viewfinder; I believe the G7 has one...

I don’t know in regards to “made” (as once I got the Q 006, my next TeeVee was meant to be BIGGER……………………. :D

So, I built a freakin addition to the house………. BIG enough to support a Sony 4K Digital Projector and accompanying screen. :D :D

Only problem is, I don’t have no money left to buy anything bigger than the Q….. that I like at this point in time :o , so the room only contains a display that is too embarrassing to state on this forum. :o :o

Thank you for the well wishes on our first child (its a girl much to my wife's delight). It is the Canon g7 I am purchasing and I am glad to hear it looks appealing to a fellow Qualian that is always a good sign (but of course if I were more advanced I am sure other cameras would make a lot more sense). We can share our fun/horror stories :). One review mentioned the pre-production model got hot enough after 10 minutes to melt butter hopefully they addressed that one!

So a new life for me - I have heard horrible rumors that once you become a parent you look at expensive purchases differently (as in are you nuts?!?) I am hoping that is merely an urban legend :).

FYI stores in MN are getting in the Canon G7 now so you might want to call around if you are in a hurry. Hopefully I will have one in my hands today. Some have already gone out to those who pre-ordered earlier than I.

It seems inconceivable, but again, maybe not, Sony has delayed its release of the BDP-S1 Blu-Ray Player (http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/20/sonys-bdp-s1-blu-ray-player-delayed-again-again/) yet again. Originally promised earlier this spring, the target date is now December 4, 2006, but I'm certain that is SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

The battery fiasco and delays are really hurting SONY.

If the PS3 doesn't debut next month, they'll really be in trouble IMHO.

Hello Qualia owners....I have posted some questions on gaming in other forums, but I think you all are best equipped to address my concerns.

I just ordered the 70XBR2....I love movies, but also am a big gamer. I am a little concerned that playing XBOX 360 and the upcoming PS3 on the 70XBR2 might not give me as crisp a picture or as fluid a playing experience as, say the 60XBR2 might. How is gaming, when you blow up the image to 70 inches? I know you are all very discriminating viewers so your opinion WILL matter to me, in this process.

I did some keyword searches for XBOX on this thread, but there are too many to wade through for now. I will try again later, but thought I would post this for immediate response.

Also, have any of you experienced lag issues with XBOX360 on the Qualia?

Thanks! I feel your experiences will closely approximate mine, so I am curious to get your feedback....!

Fellow Zechman is your guy as he has had his xbox360 hooked up to his qualia since day 1...i believe he is out of town at the moment though so it may take some time for him to respond; maybe you should just pm him and await his reply.

i connected my son's ninentdo gamecube once (simply though composite inputs on the front) but i didn't pay much attention and i doubt he (6 at that time) was thinking of anything other than beating his grandfather in fx zero :)

I have no problems at all with the Q006 with the xbox 360. You will of course get to see exactly how well they programmed it as each pixel is clearly rendered. Call of Duty 2 was quite enjoyable in a 70 inch mode. To be honest all game systems look quite good at 70 inches so far. The perfect signal (as compared to say a dvd or regular station which has plenty of noise) means that it is translated with ease to 70 inches and you simply see what there is to see.

As for fluidity it seems to do a great job - I will do a quick caution to you though as the owner of more than one rear projection HD tv - make sure it is not susceptible to burn-in! The Qualia is immune to burnin (as my countless hours using it as a computer monitor have clearly proven to me). I do not know about the other sets.

The only other area is shockingly that the TV can be a bit too large! For some video games if you enjoy playing close up you may find yourself using peripheral vision and swinging your head around a bit to keep track of all of the details. I haven't had a problem with this but I do notice that at 6 feet from a 70 inch you literally have more screen than direct field of vision so its something that you may want to consider.

I picked up my Canon G7 today! I was pretty shocked that it didn't come with even a softcase for 600 dollars. It appears they are cutting corners in at least one area. The viewer seems quite bright although I was a bit surprised to find that it does not always reflect how clear the picture will actually be (When zooming in I was thinking god this looks horrible but lo and behold the actual photo looks much better). I am quite the novice and was pleasantly surprised to find out that memory has dropped quite a bit (a 2gb sd card is only 100 dollars).

All the manufacturers seem to be doing this; though I don't understand why Canon doesn't offer a camera-specific case that I might purchase as an option...

How is the constructon quality of the camera itself? Enquiring minds want to know...

PS: Last night was the absolute LAST STRAW for me and the Comcast/Moto 6412 box. This is, without a doubt, the biggest electronic POS I've ever had the misfortune to use. TivoS3 is coming my way, along with two CableCards to make it sing. Mrs3 is not happy at the prospect of losing OnDemand, but I guess I could wire a standard cable box into a second video input to enable this function until the next gen Cable Cards hit the market? That assumes, of course, that the S3 will be compatible with said cards...

It appears the delay is official:

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/10/20/sony_bluray_player_delayed_dec/

I hope that some of you have inside lines and get it anyway :). The darn ps3 is using up the bluray parts and there is a general shortage of the materials for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players I have heard. As I understand both sides have agreed to hold off on the big format wars for awhile until at least one side has enough ammunition (supply) to wage it.

As for the construction of the G7 it is built like a tank - with a skylight.... The body feels very solid (as it is metal that is no surprise) although I believe the actual extending lens is plastic. The big problem I would say is that the viewer is RAISED beyond the body and receives no protection whatsoever! This means that if it comes into contact with anything from the rear side you are likely to see significant damage to your display. The person at the camera shop suggested buying one of the cuttable ipod plastic sheets and making my own screen protector. The glass doesn't even seat itself within the metal so even the edges of the screen are glass (so it doesn't even have angular protection). I can't imagine why they didn't put a bit more protection on such a huge piece of glass (which if broken renders it worthless). I will toss out some more updates when I have them.

Thanks for the feedback. I am very interested in how Qualia owners find hi-def gaming to be on this set, as I will likely experience the same thing with my future 70XBR2 (on its way to me as we speak).

I agree...the Qualia and 70XBR2 seem to enhance any flaws that exist. In the end, it was just a tradeoff for me...deciding between the 60 or the 70. With the 60, any flaws won't be quite as magnified, but also...I won't get as "cinematic" a picture either. In the end, I decided to go BIG and accept the consequences. I am hoping the PS3 and XBOX 360 (waiting to purchase when HD-DVD add-on comes out) both look solid on the 70XBR2. I tested XBOX 360 on a 60a2000 yesterday and it seemed just fine. So given that the XBR2 is an upgrade from the 60a2000, I think I will be just fine. I have never gamed on a Qualia before or any set larger than 36 inches.

Watched "Over the Hedge" on SD DVD last night. Not only was it an entertaining and fun movie, but the picture looked fantastic on the 006. The animals looked 3-D against the background, as if the movie was HD.

(Okay, actually it's after dark right now, but you get the idea....)

DiveDude: Good to see you posting again! I was worried that, well, there's always post #500 for that. Welcome back. Also, I'm interested in what you think of the Panasonic Blu-Ray player, since I'm thinking about picking that one up myself.

DVD Freaky: Welcome to the Qualia 006 Thread, a secluded island of friendliness in the middle of a sea of AVS Blu-Ray/HD-DVD nastiness!

First off, I do have an XBox, but not a 360. Nothing against the 360, but I just haven't found the game that I just "HAVE" to play on it. I also have a GameCube, but it doesn't see all that much action.

A close friend of mine has a 60" GW SXRD, so I've seen a number of the same games on both displays, and there's nothing inherently better about putting games on a smaller screen, especially with a 1080p resolution screen. Keep in mind that game content is different from video or film in that it doesn't need to be "cleaned up" or "softened" to look good--it's not compressed or processed, it's generated right there right then. So the less filtering and enhancement, the better. If you're dealing with a 720p (or better) game, the bigger screen looks a lot better.

Assuming that your set is similar enough to the Qualia and/or GW SXRD, then make sure you set the video input you're connected to for Direct Mode, and turn off all the Edge enhancement, noise reduction, etc. All of these things will just introduce video processing delay and not enhance the picture.

I hope that helps.

FWIW, I agree with Zechman. The XBOX games, particularly the 360, are so amazingly crisp that there is no need to scale or filter outside of the Qualia with an outboard scaler/deinterlacer, etc. I have an Anthem D2 with a Gennum scaler/deinterlacer, but I actually plug my XBOX 360 directly into the Qualia 006, bypassing the D2. I do this mostly for the use of PIP (or whatever Sony calls its version), where I can do side by side viewing of a baseball game for instance, while I play Texas Hold Em or whatever on my XBOX 360.

[Yes, yes, I'm a card junkie...but a game like poker is just so perfect for PIP viewing, where you' rewatching something kinda slow, like baseball, and watching your chips with the other eye!]

The 360 looks amazing on the Qualia for the record. Especially games like Call of Duty 2, with the digital audio out going to the Qualia, and then back to my D2, before being sent off to the 5-channel amp and speakers. The sound is insane, with the bullets flying over your left and right ears depending on the location in the game. My cat gets spooked it is so lifelike! There is also my favorite game, Project Gotham Racing 3, which looks equally incredible on the Qualia. Perfect Storm is pretty nice too. Hell, even boring old Hold Em looks crisp.

On Nov. 7th, my next toy appears, which is the HD-DVD external drive for the XBOX 360. MSRP is $199, and I will be buying one the day they go on sale. I really wanna see how well King Kong on HD-DVD looks on the Qualia.

Fun fun fun!!!

Hope this helps DVDFreaky a bit.

I popped in the new bulb last night before pizza/movie night with the family and holy $hit, I now understand other owners' statements regarding this event. It is as if I have a new set...really a drastic difference...everything looks soooooo different (one negative, i see more of the "SSE" with the bulb being so bright...also, my blacks may be a bit more crushed now, but i'm not sure).

I now feel as though I've been depriving myself of top notch viewing for not swapping out the bulb before it became unbearable; I also feel compelled to re-watch a lot of content now to see what I may have been missing, but I really just don't have the time! ... already so backed up on my viewing queue...

I used only compressed air for the moment to "clean" out the "glass window" inside the Q but I noticed some weird pinkish color to the glass and it also had an appearance like pinkish fluid sandwiched between two glass plates (looked like a "contour plot" with shades of pink) and the peak of that "contour plot" would seem to coincide with the "blob" I can sometimes see on my set in the cold winter months when the set is warming up.

Maybe I'll try to clean it with more mechanical means (i.e., lens paper, etc.) but I don't notice anything in the picture so I may just go back to "ignorance is bliss" :)

Anyone else noticed that about the glass inside the Q? I thought about snapping a photo and maybe I'll try but given its location inside the set I'm not sure I'll be able to get a good shot.

I saw parts of King Kong (not the demo disc, portions of the actual movie that is going to be released) and I believe it will be THE best looking HD DVD thus far. I saw bits of Harry Potter Goblet as well and that looked great too, but I think Kong may walk away with the prize.

Also got to see the 360 add-on in action and it was very impressive; I actually pre-ordered one from GameStop even though I don't have a 360 :) I am interested in whether I will be able to get it to play movies when attached to a PC (I guess I'll eventually pick up the 360 but I've been avoiding it as gaming becomes very addictive to me and I just don't have the luxury of time :))

Howdy Zechman,

How lucky are you spending time in beautiful Hawaii :D

I have watched a couple of Blu-ray movies and 4 SD movies on the Panny, since I got it Tuesday. One of the movies was the SD Superbit version of The Fifth Element. I am very impressed. The picture looks great on the 006, and the 006 does a wonderful job of deinterlacing the 1080i input ( I am feeding it HDMI direct from the player ). I decided to get the Panny after reading some good reviews and seeing it in action myself. I got tired of waiting for Sony and Pioneer to come out with theirs. With all the Blu-ray titles coming out I wanted to get in the game and I am happy I did. And there are price deals to be had ;)

The Panny has 8 analog outs for 7.1. I have them hooked up as well as toslink. The uncompressed audio sounds fantastic through the analog outs. In the packing box there is a mail in card for free upgrades for DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD that they will send as soon as available. I am looking forward to that.

I also like that I can play CD's and MP3 on the player.

The player comes with Eight Below and a mail in card for Gone in 60 Seconds and The Great Raid.

I have only had it a few day, but have tried most options and everything works as advertised. Now I plan to burn up the mail with Blu-rays from Netflix :D

Thanks Brian...that DOES help a lot...and puts my mind at ease. I think the Qualia/70XBR2 both look amazing....but I was concerned about gaming on this set. Wonder if the XBR2 might be any different, with it being a native 1080p and all.

My only other concern...the fact that the 70 tends to make any flaws from the signal very noticeable. This is not the tv's fault obviously, but bad compression at the source with some HD channels will make some programming a bit "annoying" to watch. I hope this will not get in the way of me enjoying my new 70. In the store, the picture was amazing...just like the Qualia's. I feel both televisions have the best picture of any HDTV I have ever seen. I just hope my Time Warner Cable HD channels match the excellence of my future tv.

Would you chose the Qualia over the new Sony SXRD? I have the option right now of buying the Qualia (new, with full warranty) from a retailer. The picture is awesome and from my perspective blows away the new model (70"). However the Qualia doesn't appear to support 1080P.

Thanks for the reply. From my experience, once you buy current technology, it is immediately date. There's always the next generation. However, there seems to be a lot of hype over 1080P. I understand interlaced versus progressive, but is it that much better? At the retailer, we used a Denon DVD play that converts from 420 through1080P. Frankly, there wasn't a lot of difference with the Qualia. However, the 70XBR2 had quite a bit of 'stair steps' in the dark areas of scenes. Even when viewing 1080P, it was nowhere close to the Qualia picture. Everyone has different preferences ranging from top technology to the best quaility. Not having an HDTV today, it is hard to determine what if anything I'll be missing with the Qualia. Have others recently purchased a Qualia instead of the XBR2 or another 1080P compatible?

It is nice to see another Qualia finding a home although it is bittersweet knowing that the number of those is quite finite. Who knows maybe someday they will realize the wonderful product they had and begin producing them again (maybe with an advance or 2 in production technology).

The Direct mode on the 006 is for a "natural, soft picture" and I don't see how that would help with a game. There is also a Game mode on the 006 to help with lip sync.

Ok, thanks. Unfortunately, there is absolutely NO mention of a 'Direct Mode' in the instruction manual for the XBR2. But if you google 'Direct Mode' and XBR2, it DOES show that it is indeed an option with the tv.

How does one actually access this 'Direct Mode' and when is it supposed to be used??

DVD Freaky: Sorry about the confusion. I'll elaborate.

Direct Mode
The Qualia, and the GW SXRD's have separate settings for each video input for things like contrast, brightness, color tint, etc. One of the advanced settings is called "Direct Mode" and it enables 10-bit color processing. If you don't have it on, then the set falls back to the 8-bit DRC ("Digital Reality Creation"--the scaler) mode, which gives you more options, but in truth is a fall-back to earlier versions of the Sony scaler. (I think the Q006 is the first set with "version 2" of the DRC engine.

Direct Mode gives you a better overall picture than DRC mode, and does it faster. As Ben already pointed out, according to UMR (who also calibrated my set), there's really no situation where you'd prefer DRC mode over Direct. But since you asked about gaming specifically, that's why I called out Direct Mode. I don't think it's enabled by default and it really gets the video lag down to near-zero.

Game Mode
Another advanced setting is "Game Mode" which is only available when the input signal is 480i. I think, but have been unable to confirm, that this is activates a high-speed no-frills deinterlacing algorithm that is good for games, and probably inappropriate for video. I guess this option would ALWAYS be grayed out on an input that has a 360 connected to it!

1080i vs 1080p
For most applications, 1080i on the Qualia and newer Sony sets is all you need, because the de-interlacer is pretty good with interlaced video and it also will do 3:2 inverse telecine on 1080i movies to reconstruct 1080p24 (Sony calls this "Cinemotion", and it's also on in Direct Mode). A year ago very few sets did this on 1080i input. I can't speak to how common it is right now. It doesn't eliminate "motion judder", but then again that is a much more subtle effect than witnessing every fifth frame get repeated.

One application where 1080p can be preferable is gaming. Games are inherently progressive sources, and in gaming there can be no lag. When you watch a movie, you just need to sync up the video and audio processing so they match, but you can't play a game where both the audio and video lag behind by (to use an extreme example) a full second. The lag simply must be zero. Encoding to 1080i and back to 1080p on-screen is a step that can easily be eliminated for games.

Today, this is a moot point, as very few XBox games are 1080i and most 360 games are 720p (perhaps for the very reason I describe above--perhaps because the 360 doesn't have the CPU horsepower to deliver 1080p on most games even if it had HDMI). We won't really know about the PS3 until a year or so from now how many games are 1080p.

rjacobs asked about the Qualia versus the newer sets and honestly, if I were buying today, I might choose the newer set. But I was buying over a year ago and the Qualia was the only set that met all my criteria. I have no regrets at all.

To clarify: The Qualia does not accept 1080p input via HDMI. This is what most people are talking about when they talk about 1080p input. The complete answer is that the Qualia does not accept 1080p on any input except i.Link, which is pretty much useless considering how the industry has embraced HDMI and rejected FireWire (I might argue that they really embraced HDCP over 5C, but that's another issue.) other than perhaps shedding some insight into earlier plans for Blu-Ray by Sony.

Sunday, flying to Honolulu on business. Connect in Chicago. While in the air over Nevada or so, the earthquake hits Hawaii. Power is out at HNL so all flights turn around and go home. I can't get to Honolulu until Tuesday--maybe not even then. Can't find a hotel near O'Hare that can take me for two nights, so I have to stay in two different hotels. Finally make it to Honolulu by connecting in Denver, but my five workdays are now cut down to three. Work like crazy to get everything done that I need to get done, and barely make it (I am pretty good at what I do.)

Finally, I have most of Saturday to enjoy before getting on a plane to come that night, connecting in San Diego. Back home, Dulles scares the crap out of me by taking almost an hour before my luggage appears on the conveyer.

I'm glad to be home. At least Mrs. Zechman got to enjoy herself.

Watched "Over the Hedge" on SD DVD last night. Not only was it an entertaining and fun movie, but the picture looked fantastic on the 006. The animals looked 3-D against the background, as if the movie was HD.

Another DVD for the Qualia Library.

Since Dwayne has made it home safely.... and now can resume his duties as Official Historian(thank God) ........can he please confirm or deny that the above is the 1st reported soon to be Qualian baby ?

Dwayne...thanks for the informative reply and for explaing 'Direct Mode'...appreciate it! And I appreciate the feedback from the other Qualia owners as well. The people in the XBR2 thread said that Qualia owners were the most satisfied with their product of ANY tv on AVS. I believe it.

My 70XBR2 arrives this week and I am still quite nervous that the darn thing will be too big. I have between 12-15 feet in my living room (it's only an apartment, but the room is pretty deep for a living room). This will be my first HDTV and I wanted to jump in "all the way." The 70-incher just had more of that "movie feel" to me...although I liked the image of the 60 as well. Everyone says that you get used to the bigger size, but I suppose time will tell. Believe it or not, there is an miniature low-hanging chandelier in my living room that is about 15" from where the tv will be and the apartment says they will remove it if I ask! I just might...as this will give me 2-3 more feet of space to work with. I am just one of those people who doesn't want to be "on top" of my tv.

I've never gamed on a set larger than 36 inches. This is going to be an experience. You mentioned upconverting from 1080i or 720p on the X360 to 1080p. Which is the desired setting on the XBOX, when gaming on a 1080p television? I believe you're saying 720p is the best....

Thanks again...

I believe the answer is go with the highest resolution the game handles - so if it has both a 720p mode and a 1080i mode go with the 1080i (it will be processing 1080 lines of data rather than 720). You may want to check with the xbr2 forum just in case for some insane reason your tv prefers 720p but I think that is unlikely.

Not to worry, believe me, even if you are not used to it initially, the adjustment period is short and you'll soon be yearning for a 80 incher......if/when one is produced.

DVD Freaky, the XBR2 SXRD dropped the direct mode so that will not be an option for you.

The 2 top options for the Xbox 360 with XBR2: 1080i with component in (and GameMode on), and 1080p (when the 1080p 360 update ships) via VGA. I haven't tested the latter. Keep DRC off with the Xbox 360. I might suggest you would find more answers in the XBR2 and A2000 threads. The A2000 and XBR2 are much closer siblings than the Qualia 006 and XBR2 are. The only viable option the XBR2 has over the A2000 owners for the Xbox 360 is the 1080p VGA input. However, I'm not sure if the VGA input is desirable because (at least on my A2000), there are far fewer tweaking options in the user menu. The DRC modes just degrade the high quality output of the 360 (from my testing). Everything else is the same as the A2000 (at least to my eyes when I did an XBR2/A2000 comparison with Oblivion on an Xbox 360).

Well, we got a class B on a Sprinter chassis. Easy to drive and gets 24 MPG. It does have a flat panel 16:9 tv, but 17" vs. 70 " is not bad in an RV this size. In fact we even have a King Sized Bed to watch it from.

As far as retirement goes, I don't know how I ever had time to work. Now we hope the $$$ holds out or I can sell the Q and eat the $$$ from it. :D

Man-Oh-Man; just hooked up the TiVo Series 3 (after correcting Comcast's insanely inept hookup) and I'm blown away! Friends, if you have a cable-based system this will take your Q006 to the next level. I immediately tuned to "Weeds" -- which we watched last evening, followed by "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", which I've seen a few times. This box has vastly superior PQ to any of the Comcast offerings; the difference is NOT subtle. Skin tones are far more natural, deep blacks are devoid of block artifacts, and Angelina Jolie looks absolutely mah-velous...

Plus -- miracles of miracles -- the volume doesn't change drastically when I change channels OR the program goes to commercial. I blamed Comcast all this time, when -- in reality -- it was the 6412, not the cable feed itself...

My area is being converted over from Time Warner over to Comcast so I hope to soon have their cable feed. Any tips on what they managed to do wrong on a cable setup? I imagined it was as simple as - hook the plug into the in cable jack and select the appropriate output resolution. Is there something special that needs to be done?

Glad you are enjoying - I have pretty much given up on cable and am sticking to getting HD-DVDs and regular DVDs as I just don't need to pay for commercials and the amount of content on HBO and Showtime just hasn't been impressive (although I was blown away by ROME I thought it was only a single season show but it appears that it will be going for another season correct?)

Have you tried the HD on demand and does that work with the TIVO?

I have to assume the 6412 is not a phase 3; I've had so much other going on that I've just been waiting for the TiVo S3.

On my Qualia the difference is NOT subtle. Skin colors and textures, deep blacks, and overall artifacts in the picture are very much improved. I need to learn all about what happens on Comcast's end and inside these boxes regarding compression, etc.; the TiVo undoubtedly has much higher quality components and the CableCards also help PQ as well.

At least the S3 can pass native rate resolution where with the 6412, you have to decide on which HD resolution to use for all your HD.

10-28-06, 08:59 PM
You, sir, are absolutely right; I set the S3 up in just that way, and there's little doubt the processing in the Qualia is better than what ships in the Moto 6412.

These boxes are really well-executed and are HEAVEN after the trials and tribulations of the 6412. They are also extremely quiet; since our Q006 is in the master bedroom this is a nice touch.

I want to move the Q down to the living room at some point (which was our plan until the knee reconstruction and rehab interrupted our lives) and will buy another S3 to go with whatever I choose for the bedroom.

I don't know, though; it's awfully tough to watch anything else after living with the Q006. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be a superior flat-panel device? Theres the new Pioneer Elite and the Sony 52-incher; anything else I should be looking at for my Xmas gift?

There's a guy in Athens who has quite the CNC machine shop. M&G Engineering is the name; the guy was a pilot, started RVing, and didn't like the existing tow-vehicle braking systems -- so he invented a better mousetrap. On one of the RV trips I went through there and had them do the install at their shop. Driving NW from Athens towards Dallas, about 15-20 miles outside of Athens is one of the prettiest areas I've ever seen...

Hi guys. Quick question. I am juggling the kids today so I am short on time.

My Q picture got much darker 2 days ago so the bulb needs replacement. I bought it in March and I would guess it has around 1500-2000 hrs. I have not checked the timer.

I got it from Tweeter. The extended warrenty from them includes one free bulb. Do I also get a free one from Sony even though I did not buy it from a Sony store?

If so, any recommendations as to who to call?

I am sure I might find the answer somewhere here but, like I said, the little ones are keeping me extra busy and I would like to know today if I need to plan a trip to Tweeter tomorrow. I would rather get a bulb from Sony first if possible.

Thanks all!

RonB63,

This is the Qualia Call Center number 1-877-782-5423. You can get one free bulb from Sony. After you get the one from Sony, I would recommend immediately getting the free one from Tweeter, so you have a spare on hand. Tweeter may want the old bulb back, Sony doesn't.

Thanks DD!

20 minutes ago while watching my Giants game I heard a somewhat loud pop and goodbye picture!

I called Tweeter first and they said that they have them in stock at the warehouse in Mass. and that they can send one out. I would not get it until Tuesday at the earliest.

When I was at their store 2 months ago buying a plasma I asked them if I should get a bulb then and they said no because they carry them in stock so I can get it immediately. They neglected to mention that in stock was 150 miles away. His implication was that they were in the back room.

I will call the Sony call center now.

Thanks again.

Ron

My free replacement bulb is on the way. Here's everything you need in one place; you call the first number if you're getting the free replacement and the second if you want to order anything after that directly through Sony. Everything ships out of the Sony Parts Depot in Kansas City, and their turnaround seems very quick.

Lamp part #XL5000
Sony Qualia: 877-782-5423
Sony Parts Depot: 800-488-7669
Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM CST
Orders rec'd by 2:00 PM ship the same day

I asked about cleaning the lamp housing. They told me it's a good idea and Sony-endorsed as long as you use optical-grade cleaning materials. Top-quality lens cleaning fluid and optical-grade microfiber cloths are recommended. They also suggest careful cleaning of the area surrounding the lamp (if it looks dusty) with an appropriately-sized vacuum attachment. I have a complete set of very small attachments for cleaning electronics and computer innards, and plan to use that before using the lens cleaner.

Happy Halloween everyone!! :) Well I got home with my shiny new copy of MI III on HDDVD and anxious to see the Q render it. Low and behold she won't turn on. Right LED flashes green for a long time then turns flashing red and stays like that. Then I unplugged from the electrical outlet and replace it. Now left red light stays solid while right led flashes red then goes to the same pattern mentioned earlier when I try to turn the Q on.

Anyone know what this means? :(

Thanks!

Check the owners manual. Sounds like your bulb may have blown.

Thanks thestewman. And thanks for BRT3 for hosting a great resource website for the Q where I was able to retrieve the manual. Unfortunately my lamp indicator is not coming on. What is happening is that the power/standby light flashes red five times after it tries to turn on (with flashing green). Manual doesn't say what this means. Anyone have a clue? Was thinking of buying a new lamp to try but if anyone has any input that could save me from spending money needlessly if that's the case.

Thanks!

Just went to BRT3's excellent site again and found that 5 blinks of power/standby LED means Lamp Driver error. I was hoping that I just had a blown lamp. Anyone knows the implication of this condition? I'll try reseating the lamp to see if that does anything.

Thanks again,

GREAT Idea! I have an extended contract that includes lamps. I can get the Sony one and then get a spare!

[QUOTE=RonB63]
If so, any recommendations as to who to call?
QUOTE]

RonB63,

This is the Qualia Call Center number 1-877-782-5423. You can get one free bulb from Sony. After you get the one from Sony, I would recommend immediately getting the free one from Tweeter, so you have a spare on hand. Tweeter may want the old bulb back, Sony doesn't.

Hi Ron. Let me know what you need to do for Sony...just give them your Serial Number?

Ron

mpsan,

Sony will ask for the serial number of the 006. Just tell them the bulb went out and the lamp light is flashing. They will likely ask how many hours the bulb lasted. Just don't volunteer to get into the service menu to find out, remember the bulb is out :D

I called the Qualia called center at 877-782-5423 (as listed above - calling any other number will generally get you "Qualia...you sure you have a Sony?" type response). What incredible service. Told them my problem. Said they would cover it no problem. They also FedEx'ed a new lamp just in case I would need it as the set was being repaired free of charge. If you haven't registered yet they will just need your serial number for the free lamp. They didn't care if the original lamp was out or not.

Just one caviet they told me if some of you guys want to order one to have as a backup is that they are warrantied for only 90 days. So if you order it and don't use it within that time and it is defective you may be out of luck.

In an age where customer techical support and service is generally horrible it is refreshing to talk to someone who didn't rush, took the time to answer and research all of my questions, and confirmed everything directly with emails as well. The service alone made the Q purchase worth it. They are opened Mon-Saturday. Just 5 guys manning the fort for Qualia. Everyone just as helpful from what I was told. Its a shame the Qualia line is discontinued.

I have had my Qualia for over a year, I have cablevison Scientific Atlantic DVR box. Well I have just started to get a DVI ALERT Notice on HDMI channel. Telling me my HDMI is not copy protected and I have to use the componnet connection. This happenend all of a sudden. So I called cablevision and they gave me a line of crap that TVs are now blocking HDMI , all sets, and they have gotten other complaints. I said you must have downloaded new software that is effecting my set. They said they will get back to me. I argued I can understand watching a downloaded movie that it may copy protected but nor regualr TV channels!. So they will get back to me in 48 hours. My Plasma upstairs which is a panasonic does not have this problem.

Is it possible that when I watched MI 3 it was copy protected and effected the Qualia some how. Has anybody else seen this DVI Alert. The screen turns blue and you get a picture of a component input and HDMI inmput and the HDMI input say NO and the component input says YES, Thanks

Well I rebooted the cable box and the TV and that seemed so far to remove the HDMI block. I bet it was the MI 3 DVD that screwed it up. Before the movie started they had a 1 minute thing about movie piracy Any ideas ??

I know I get a similar error a decent amount with a bad hdmi cable - it mostly makes it fine but sometimes fails to connect. The turning it on and off and juggling with the cord usually corrects this (I have had the SA 8300HD DVR for awhile as well). This can be quite annoying but as I used the DVR pretty infrequently I held off on buying a new HDMI for awhile (but when I did I usually had no issues provided the TV was on when the cable box was turned on). It could be some twist with the cable box's handshake from new software but I don't think a specific movie should be doing anything. Check that HDMI cable is my advice - a similar box would occur occasionally for me and it was always a turn the cable box off and then on (with a bit of hdmi cord jiggling).

Arnies
11-04-06, 07:42 AM
No it is not the handshake issue I had this before and fixed it as you described. This a copy protection issue. I beleive it was the MI 3 DVD that interacted with the TV somehow. When I rebooted both that fixed it.

If you read the threads on the SA8300 you will see that this is a very common problem and the cable cos and SA know about it and say they will fix it sometime but they have more important problems to worry about now. When I get this I usually cycle the source or turn off and on or sometimes reboot by holding the power button in till it boots but it will be with us for a while I think.

Speaking of the SA8300 HD I just returned mine - while I was returning it I saw that they had new ones with the 1394 plugs. Is anyone using those into the Qualia and if so how is the quality and is there any limitations (ie does the hdcp work fine)? I have both my computer and my HD DVD player hooked up via hdmi and the cable just wasn't worth swapping or buying a switcher for.

I use the 1394 connection a lot. The video picture appears slightly better than HDMI. I run my audio from my Comcast 6412 box to a Theta Casablanca and there is a synch problem that the 1394 connection solves because it processes the video faster.
I have the Qualia, a JVC D-vhs machine, a C-band satellite receiver with 1394 output all daisy chained together. Anything I see can be recorded to the D-vhs via 1394.

Welcome back PM :)

So how did you enjoy one of my favorite countries ?
Well no thanks to you for neglecting to tell me about the freakin Caiman alligators  .
(see the third paragraph)
http://www.velonews.com/race/mtn/articles/11156.0.html

A few years back apparently a Dutch rider had made it about ¾ of the way over the Bridge from Hell and a locomotive was traveling around the bend approaching the bridge eminently headed straight toward him.

Knowing that alligators or crocodiles? were swimming in the water below the bridge, he ran his arse off with the bike on his shoulder toward the train (because it was too late to to turn back) trying to get to the river bank before he became locomotive rail kill. Keep in mind this bridge is just wide enough for the rails, no extra room on the side for tourists to walk.

Story goes, just as the locomotive was slamming on its brakes and sliding into him, he made it to the river bank and jumped over the side of the bridge 15 ft. down into knee deep mud with the train missing him by something like 15 sec.

Nothing like that happened to me but…… I sprinted across that freakin bridge when I got to it – not looking down at the freakin crocs or gators, whatever they are.

B.T.W. any stalkers out there that try to check out my name on the results page, forget it, as I took my Mom’s middle name and maiden name (in memory of her) for my NORBA license when I started mountain biking, shortly after her passing from the big C., so that whenever I do make it on the podium, and they say her name, it makes me proud. :)

Hey, it’s better than “Harvey Mushman” (God rest his soul) but, that’s another story for another time. Not only was he an accomplished car racer but a damn good motorcycle racer. ;)

Anybody out there having Jeff calibrate their 006 this month ?

P-M, I've asked umr to recalibrate my Q006 and audio system, since I have new components (Sony 5200ES Audio/Video Receiver, Toshiba A-1 HD DVD Player, a Sony PS3 due 11/17 and a Sony Blu-Ray Player due 12/4). He said he'd be making a southern California swing this month, but I haven't heard back from him yet regarding a specific date.

During his calibration last year he made improvements to my Q006 (which already looked spectacular), significant improvement to my sound quality on my old receiver, a Sony 444ES, and unbelievable, outstanding improvement to my picture on the upstairs Sony 42" plasma.

Welcome back PM and a hello to you umr.

Life is on that fun "rocky road" stage as the baby is due Sunday and I am currently enjoying multiple trips to the hospital and pain filled days and nights. It will all be worth it but it certainly is rough seeing my wife go through so much.

Hearing of another umr trip makes me think about how bloody long it will be before I am happy enough with my audio/visual equipment to make a calibration worthwhile. Still waiting on a blu-ray (not lucky enough to have a ps3 in the bag) and pondering whether to upgrade my hd-dvd. The lack of 6.1 or 7.1 on it is a tad annoying considering that its best audio output is analog. There is of course the whole hdmi 2.0 aspect to consider but I am not allowing myself to get too worried about that yet (I am thinking at some point a good receiver that can take in 2.0 and output the 1.0 standard into our Q may be the solution).

Will the PS3 actually be a worthy bluray? (all of my hunches say heck no as they want to sell dedicated boxes but it may be better than I fear since they hope to "win the market" with it)

I have a 6.1 audio setup along with the spare speaker for 7.1 (so far haven't seen good enough material to justify reshaping my soundfield).

Its always good to hear the latest from you all - and at least at the moment it is a good distraction in the midst of this interesting experience.

So there is my update and av lament for the day :). Keep on posting -

Fyi I haven't really gotten to take the cannon g7 for much of a spin (and with my limited camera background it will probably be years before I can actually give it a workout). That back screen and its lack of protection still irks me as it will have scratches sooner or later unless I go with a plastic wrap on it (which produces its own problems).

It would be safe to say that for 006 owners the video capability (picture quality) should be at least as good as any standalone Blu-ray player (from what I’ve been told).

With audio, spec.-wise it is already superior. :)

The PS3 will support Dolby TrueHD – out of the box, the only Blu-ray player to do so.

The highest level DTS (DTS-HD MA support) would be an incredibly simple firmware upgrade in the future if Sony chose to do so.

Remember a conventional remote (unlike the stock gamer remote) will be available for sale as an accessory in Dec.?

Also, for those that already have a Blu-ray player, some Blu-ray discs and are having umr visit them for a calibration, there are hidden Easter eggs on the discs that show calibration stuff which may be helpful to Jeff ?

Ouch... Sony keeps taking it in the chops. Now it's being reported that the backwards-compatibility feature on the PS3 is giving Japanese users real problems. If this negative publicity turns off buyers then Wii and Xbox will have an advantage out of the gate. If the PS3 is actually -- as has been reported -- a "make or break" product for Sony, they might be wishing they hadn't put all those eggs into the PS3 basket right about now...

A long road as it started Tuesday morning but she is perfect (as I hope to show in some photos despite my amateur skill at photography).

Mom is doing well and I will be taking a month or so off work to help out and take care of both of the girls in my life.

She is our first baby so definitely a learning experience but we seem to be quite fortunate as she has a great temperment and I have even gotten to have 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep on multiple occasions!

Hope all is going well for everyone.

Penton Man,

I met our favorite cierge last night in the flesh at a private screening of Casino Royale on the Sony lot. Oh my gosh, she is smokin'!!! A solid 10!!! I am not embellishing.

Casino Royale was quite a departure from the recent Bond films. More similar to the early Sean Connery outings. Bond is portrayed by Daniel Craig as a vulnerable character. The film is much more realistic and not cartoon like. Bond bleeds during fights. Some scenes are quite brutal. Bond falls in love. The only gadgets are the ones we can all currently purchase from Sony (cell phone, camera, laptop).

I enjoyed it as a movie, but at times it just didn't feel like a James Bond movie. It will be interesting to see what the reaction is. I believe some may be disappointed, but overall it should do very well.

One thing I can tell you is it will look great on Blu-Ray on the Q006 when released :D

So the technician arrives today to work on the Q. I asked if he has worked on these before. He says "oh yeah, work on these all the time." I'm thinking he really doesn't know what this is then. So I asked if I will lose my calibration from his work. He says shouldn't but he couldn't understand what I had calibrated as he indicated that these units don't have much to be calibrated. Now I'm a bit worried.

After a while of peaking inside the Q he looks up and says "Oooooh, this is a special TV. The parts aren't common. I can't wait to fix this so I can see the picture." I thought that was cute. Thought I'd share the experience with fellow Q owners.

Of course he'll have to order the ballast to replace. Hopefully should be enjoying the Q once again in a few days. :)

Happy holidays!

At least he didn't open her up and exclaim, "What the hey-uhl is this?"...

Penton Man,

I met our favorite cierge last night in the flesh at a private screening of Casino Royale on the Sony lot. Oh my gosh, she is smokin'!!! A solid 10!!! I am not embellishing.

I haven't tried to get my full 10megapixel shots up on the web but these aren't too bad and flickr definitely makes hosting them a snap.

Well, if you speak with her again, tell her, given the fact that the “word” around the lot is that she has a freakin late date every other freakin day of the week, I have no idea how the girl makes it into work without being tardy.

Unless……….she’s gotten herself a pair of roller skates or a bicycle and pulls it/them out of the car where she parks and hauls ass over to the Capra building in a few minutes.

Tell her "Fee" is watching that minute hand on her watch hit 12 every morning. :D

Any fellow Qualians out there plan on using a PS3 as their dedicated BD player? Or, better yet, has anyone actually hooked up a PS3 to their 006's yet?

I will be interested in hearing the verdict on the PS3 as BD player from a fellow Qualian as well. I know I intend to use it as primary player but the rub is of course getting your hands on one at all and so far I have come up dry.

There are a couple new pictures up on the flickr site if you check the main photo link for any who can't get enough of baby pics (the wife is also there :) but alas they are hospital time so no cute Tivo poses).

hey guys,
i ust bought a ps3 and was trying to hook it up to my qualia 006 through the HDMI plug in the back, as it is an HD gaming system. The TV does not display anything or play any audio at all, but when i use the three color cables that plug into the TV it works fine! Please help me as i need to know how i can set the TV to HD input mode, or anything. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!!!!!! THANKSSSS
