View Full Version : QUALIA 006 Owner's Thread
thesirjay 11-18-06, 04:36 AM My guess would be that you should hook it up using both methods then select hdmi as the output type on the PS3 - It sounds like the PS3 is not outputing HDMI by default so even though you are on the right input (6 or 7) there is no signal to detect.
If that doesn't work I suggest you turn the PS3 on and off while on the correct input with the Q in hopes that triggers a handshake.
Alas I do not have the PS3 yet (stalking the ebay ranks as I type) so those are just educated guesses.
FrankWhiteFrank 11-18-06, 01:31 PM Cool
thesirjay 11-18-06, 01:54 PM The hunt was a success I have a PS3 hopefully arriving Monday or Tuesday. So I will let you know what I think of it as a blu-ray player. Hopefully I can just add it to my Harmony 880 and not have to add another remote.
By the way any Harmony 880 remote owners found the perfect delay for power on and swap inputs - mine is still too fast so it merely powers on the tv. I don't want to go overkill as standing there pointing the remote for 5 secs seems silly I am guessing it is between 1.9-3.5 secs I just haven't had the time to experiment.
thesirjay 11-18-06, 02:05 PM For those hooking up the PS3 you may want to make sure that its output is not set to 1080P as I doubt the Q will recognize that at all.

I left my 880 settings at the default and have never experienced any issues with the Q006. I probably do need to adjust the delay settings to operate the TiVo S3 more efficiently, but I've been too lazy, so I've gone back to the stone age days and am using two remotes (the 880 + TiVo peanut).
I should be receiving the PS3 on Monday as well and will be able to do comparisons against the Toshiba HD DVD player. The real test will come in a few weeks when the Sony BDP-S1 arrives.
By the way, has anyone seen the new Bond flick, Casino Royale? I haven't kept up with the latest Sony DVD players, but there is a scene at the Ocean Club where Bond is reviewing security camera footage from a DVD and it looks like the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-Ray player is the machine. Anyone else notice this?
thesirjay 11-18-06, 02:26 PM A note on ebay ps3 buying - currently ebay is swamped with ps3s the end prices vary hugely I have seen a 60gb system as low as 820 (I saw that one with 2 secs left alas so missed it) and also well into the 2000s (most now seem to be ending 1100-1500). There apparently was some bid inflating going on where people were purposely bidding up every ps3 (but their own) in order to increase the perceived value. I have spoken to multiple people who had their auctions fall through due to non paying bidders. If you spend some time and have a bit of luck you can end up paying a very reasonable margin rather than the insane rates you hear about.
Penton-Man 11-18-06, 06:49 PM 1. Any fellow Qualians out there plan on using a PS3 as their dedicated BD player?
2.Or, better yet, has anyone actually hooked up a PS3 to their 006's yet?
1. At the time of this writing.............Yes.
2. No, I probably won't be able to hook one up to the 006 in my home until the week after Turkey Day, I imagine.
Penton-Man 11-18-06, 06:51 PM Hopefully I can just add it to my Harmony 880 and not have to add another remote.
I would plan on the Harmony NOT working with the PS3.
thesirjay 11-18-06, 10:59 PM Thats a shame if the PS3 doesn't work with the Harmony - I was pleasantly surprised to find the xbox 360 does work with the Harmony and I had guessed that if it used standard remote technology then it would be able to either capture the signals or be programmed with them.
pkiarash 11-19-06, 12:22 AM hey guys,
still haven't gotten the HDMI to recognize the ps3 input at the back of the tv in port 6 ot 7. has anyone here actually hooked the ps3 up to their qualia 006 and been able to play it on 1080p. I tried to set it to even 480p in the system display settings, and my screen went blank. I really have no idea what to do. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. Thanks
pkiarash 11-19-06, 12:23 AM i also hooked it up via the three colored cables, and it works fine with not-so high def picture.

If you wish to use the HDMI capabilities of the PlayStation®3, you must first setup the system using the included A/V cables. Follow the steps below to configure HDMI settings on the users PlayStation®3 system.
1. Check the resolution supported by your TV (that be 1080i for the 006 :) )
Resolution varies depending of the TV type. For details, refer to the instruction manual for the TV.
2. Select Display Settings under Settings in the XMB of the PlayStation®3.
3. Select Video Output Settings.
4. Select the connector type on your TV (HDMI).
5. You will now be informed that the PlayStation® 3 will test the settings for 30 seconds.
6. After you select the button to “test” the display, the system will remain in the selected connection type for 30 sec.
At this time you should switch your television’s input from the AV input to the HDMI input.
If your television supports HDMI then you will see a screen asking to accept the setting.
If your television doesn’t support HDMI, the television will display a black screen to which you will wait the 30 seconds until the PlayStation®3 reverts back to the original setting.
7. You will then be asked what resolution you want to display in the selected connection type (Automatic or Manual).
8. If you select Automatic, the PlayStation®3 will configure itself to the highest possible resolution.
9. If you select Manual, the PlayStation®3 will allow you to select the resolution you wish to display (1080p / 1080i / 720p / 480p).
10. After you select the resolution you wish to use, you will be prompted to set the television type.
11. Once you select the resolution, whether automatic or manual, you will then be prompted to save the settings by pressing x .

the harmony is ir based; the ps3 is bluetooth based...there is a new harmony remote coming out that i believe is rf based but i'm not sure about bluetooth.

By god, I think we could end up with one of them murdering the other. They are definitely out of control. Good thing they closed the thread before someone did some real damage.
By the way, were you there PM ?
I saw in the first post he had a D-Theater. Was there a comparison of D-HD and Blu-Ray to D-vhs ?
Penton-Man 11-20-06, 02:09 AM Lol,
Those guys can get pretty cantankerous at times.
Nope, I couldn’t make it.
Had a weeding with following reception that started early the same afternoon but, I knew some of the people that would be attending that I would have liked to meet in person.
thesirjay 11-20-06, 12:42 PM Quick Question: Where is the serial number at? (I am about to phone in the new bulb request and don't want to be crawling around the Q while on the phone).
Thanks all
Btw was anyone in this thread at the TomKat wedding? PM's reference to a wedding with reception made me have to ask :).
divedude 11-20-06, 07:00 PM Quick Question: Where is the serial number at? (I am about to phone in the new bulb request and don't want to be crawling around the Q while on the phone).
It's on the back, right above where the Antenna comes in.
BenDover 11-20-06, 09:39 PM i am extremely close to pulling the trigger on the 52 in bravia xbr3...any comments, suggestions, experience, recommendations otherwise?
any new product right around the corner i should hold out for that will have all the magic mummy dust sprinkled in there?
pawrampe 11-21-06, 08:47 AM Power Saving Mode - Does anyone know if it does more than just reduce the watts used by the bulb from 200 to 150?

I think I ended up at 5 seconds to get it to work reliably for me...
BenDover,
In the Sony XBR3 Bravia threads, there's a lot of discussion on what is referred to as "clouds" or something. Apparently, the problem has to do with uneven backlighting of the larger 46"er. I have a 32" with no trouble and an excellent display, so the speculation is that this is endemic to the larger LCD panels. Caveat emptor.
PS.
Glad to see the thread humming along, with P-M, DiveDude and the usual suspects. I recently had a very positive experience with the Qualia support, with a new bulb overnighted no questions asked. The rep had some interesting but vague comments about the 006 and XBR panels having technology and components far above the "standard TVs", Sony and all.
I guess with the California influence around here, there's little sympathy for the Florida Gators and their BCS ranking. At least our SEC games are in glorious CBS 1080i. And for you motorsports enthusiasts, I'm about 5 miles as the crow flies from Daytona Int'l Spdwy and what will surely be an IRL event within a year or so. Testing went very well. Visitors for the historical event are welcome.
Ciao.
MotorMouth777 11-22-06, 01:36 PM Just put in bulb number 4. Purchased Q006 in second wave April 2005.
This one lasted all of 4 months so annual support costs are $950/yr but mine basically runs 14 to 16 hours a day between the Xbox 360, and eveyone else sitting around slackjawed at the still awesome picture.
Popped in a new bulb and she is as good as new...................... Still awesome.

Wow, I'll have to check my hours, but I'm still on the original bulb :)

when you replace yours, are the bulbs "blown out" or are you replacing when the picture dims to a point that you feel you need to replace?
how many hours on each bulb, if you've checked/tracked?
i recently changed mine and i was under 3000...iirc, something like 2600 or so...mine just get unbearably dim but never went "pop"
You know..I still have that same "delay" issue with my 676. I normally use DVD input so just hit Watch TV again if I want to change inputs from there.

P.S. Don't we Qualians have lamps anyway? :D

ManWithAPlan 11-22-06, 05:55 PM Aright guys, I need your help. I bought my Qualia exactly 1 year ago today, and she's still as 'perty as when I first saw her. I have never changed the bulb yet, but I have a replacement on hand. I think I've noticed a dimming lately, not quite as bright as before. Do I go ahead, take the plunge and replace the lamp, risking screwing it up somehow before Thanksgiving (oh, the horror!!!!), or do I keep plowin through, until it gets unbearable.
How hard is it anyway to replace? I think I get it, but I'm looking for feedback. Anything to watch out for?
Do I take the plunge? Could the old bulb still be used if worse came to worse after replacing it?
Thanks for the help boys. Either way, it's gonna be a nice long Qualian weekend for sure!
Cheers everyone,
-Brian

Brian, it's really a snap to do. I did it following a couple glasses of wine that "thebland" recommended and still didn't screw up anything.
Just read the manual, it is very straightforward.
In fact, I found the most time-consuming part was cleaning all the dust build-up in the box :D where the lamp lives.
That in itself could have provided me with as much an increase in luminescence as the bright new bulb (which was actually TOO bright for me for a couple of weeks).
You can always use your old bulb as a back-up anytime.
Penton-Man 11-22-06, 06:36 PM PM since you mentioned it, we are going to our older sons wedding in Denver in a few months. He is going to marry someone who worked at Victorias Secret! :D
Did I mention that somebody gave me a DVD of the rehearsal for last year’s Holiday Fashion show, some scenes of which I doubt would have passed the censor hounds. :D
Honestly, some of the best stuff that I remember from last years show was the music ..............i.e. Seal, etc.
divedude 11-22-06, 06:37 PM ManWithAPlan,
You shouldn't have any problems replacing the bulb; just follow the instructions in the manual. Remember how it came out, so you can use the same motion to put the new one in. Make sure the 006 has been off for at least a couple of hours, so you don't burn yourself.
Take a flashlight to look inside the chamber. You will likely see dust. I would suggest vacuuming out the chamber you pull the bulb out of. I use the upholstery tool with the bristles. And I am careful not to scratch the glass lens on the left. Finally I use a lens cleaner and cloth to clean the glass lens.
If you have the Sony stand, you do not have to take any of it apart. My first bulb change, I took the top piece of trim off, but it was not necessary.
Treat yourself with the new bulb, you will enjoy it for the holidays :D

PM,
I pulled my second bulb out to clean the dust off and when I put it back in, it wouldn't work anymore. I have the same luck with nightlite bulbs. I still have my first bulb as a backup, I hope it is still good. And I have a new one just in case :D

MotorMouth777 11-23-06, 02:10 AM Here is how mine goes and it seems to be consistent in this behavior....... The TV looks bright and perfect until 2 or 3 days or so..... then I notice a slight dimming which gets noticeable worse with time...... so I switch to Vivid and it looks good. Then about the last day or maybe two days it is very noticably dimmer even darkish to the point where I go........yep....new bulb time. Then its just a few hours and dark she goes. When I take out the bulb there is glass inside the bulb housing itself (Not the TV) where the filament end of the bulb has shattered. You will definitely know when the bulb is about to croak.
Putting in a new bulb is a snap.....very easy...unless you do not understand the screw or hex wrench principles. I do vacuum out the chamber where the lamp snaps in as there is some very minor dust accumulation. When the new bulb is in she looks as good as new. If your picture looks good just wait till the bulb fails and put in a new one. No reason to do it early as it seems to experience a quick bulb death.
I always keep at least 2 bulbs in inventory......just in case one of the replacements has a problem. The TV comes on at 7:20 AM and it does not really cycle on and off but maybe twice a day. Sometimes off from 9:30 till 3 when the boys back home but most often on from 7:30 till 1:30 AM M-T-W-T, 7:30 till 3:00 AM Friday and 11 till 3:00 AM Sat and 11:00 till 1:00 AM Sunday.
I wish the bulbs would last longer but when you run it 14-16 hours a day it seems 4 to 5 months is all you get. I have not checked hours but my guess is I am getting less than 2,000 hours per bulb. Maybe when you run it all day it lowers life? TV is on a UPS so should not have power interruption issues to hurt bulb. The boys play their video games on input 4 and leave the TV on for hours after the game is over with just a dark input 4 screen. I assume the bulb is still blazing away but the TV shows dark screen cause there is no signal from the game console.
Maybe there is some setting that lowers the power to the bulb to increase life but I probably would not use it. $900 per year for bulbs might be considered high by some but considering the beauty of the Q blazing away at all 200 watts of bulb I pay it without too much whining. Anybody have some thoughts on how to increase bulb life without impacting picture quality or viewing time would be appreciated.
Next bulb prediction.................Right at March Madness time.......
...Anybody have some thoughts on how to increase bulb life without impacting picture quality or viewing time would be appreciated....Two things to remember-- never touch the bulb glass with your fingers. The skin oils will cause irregular lamp life and could even cause the bulb to blow.
Second thing (that would apply to this situation) is the temperature. Make sure that the area has good airflow and none of the vents are clogged. Adding an additional small electronics fan could help in dissipating the heat.

thesirjay 11-26-06, 12:18 PM I finally got a chance to try out the PS3 BD Player yesterday. The picture looked quite good. I believe it looks better on 1080i than 720p but would love to hear if any others have an opinion on that. (the PS3 selects 720p over 1080i so you need to override in order to see 1080i out - and no it can't do anything with 1080P of course). On at least one game (fall of man) it was very clearly much crisper at 720p than 1080i so I imagine it is a source material thing as well. So far I have only watched Ice Age Meltdown on blu-ray. Sadly the PS3 gets an F for regular dvd as it does not upscale at all (it only offers some noise reduction features) so my hd-dvd will still get plenty of use.
I tried going with vivid in order to wring a bit more life out of the bulb but I just couldn't handle the imperfections I compromised by pumping my brightness up to 36 (from 28) and that was a livable amount of oomph (definitely about time for me to crawl behind and get the serial number for my Sony call).
Hope you all had a happy Turkey Day - and the idea of a new in box Q for 6995 has me drooling but alas as a responsible parent I don't think I can justify it (on the tail of the PS3 + wii purchases) at least not at the moment.
pengilly 11-26-06, 01:58 PM has any body had a side by side of the xbr2 70 vs the qualia 70? Is the qualia 1080 p ?

It is 1080p. It accepts 1080i and does the deinterlacing internally. And a very good job of it. I have not seen them side by side.

thesirjay,
I would like to get a Wii, if I can ever find one. Mini Dive wants to drive the off-road truck. How does it look on the Q?
thesirjay 11-26-06, 11:05 PM It is a 480i picture and was never meant to knock your socks off in terms of graphics (they have a purchasable 480p connector which I haven't found yet). The whole motion sensor thing isn't quite as precise as I would hope I have a feeling the 70 inch tv with the player a bit near it may cause a certain amount of difficulty.
The Wii is going for much better gameplay. The graphics are pathetic in comparison (the PS3 definitely can pump out the pixels). But the gameplay seems much more solid for stuff like the zelda title and their free sports title.
So if you want cute and better gameplay over wow graphics then the Wii fits the bill. Their games seem better designed and a bit more fun although you will wish they had been able to keep the graphics power of the other consoles. The controller is much much more innovative than anything the others have done although as I said it isn't as precise as I would have hoped and there doesn't seem to be any way to mess with its settings much alas.
pawrampe 11-27-06, 12:29 PM Anybody have some thoughts on how to increase bulb life without impacting picture quality or viewing time would be appreciated.
Try the following in your situation... (this is what I am doing, just every 2-3 months)
Take the bulb out every month and clean the removable screen from the bulb itself. I found that the bulb dims when that screen gets clogged.
On a new bulb, switch to "power savings" (150W instead of 200W) and turn on "high altitude" (faster fan).
Adjust picture settings from there.
thesirjay 11-27-06, 01:07 PM Well I guess I know why the PS3 is showing me such a lousy picture on a 720p game when displayed at 1080i:
"Reports have circulated recently in the US retail market saying that when used with older high-definition (HD) TVs that support only a 1080i resolution, the PS3 displays 720p resolution games at only 480p. Sources at Sony said this problem could be caused by a firmware problem and that the company will resolve the problem as soon as possible."
Its always good to remember your source material's encoding and not to reslice and dice it too many times but I will say the PS3 is quite inconvenient in terms of swapping resolutions so needing to watch movies at 1080i and games at 720p requires a chunk of work and quitting applications in order to reach the menu.
Also you may find that the audio fails when going from watching a movie to playing a game (without turning it off). The solution is turning the ps3 off and on.

Also you may find that the audio fails when going from watching a movie to playing a game (without turning it off). The solution is turning the ps3 off and on.
I have my PS3 set to Automatic and haven't yet seen the problems you reveal between movies and games. I'll do some more comparisons when time permits.
Zechman 11-27-06, 06:08 PM has any body had a side by side of the xbr2 70 vs the qualia 70? Is the qualia 1080 p ?
I have seen the two side-by-side at a Tweeter in my area when a friend of mine and I happen to walk in while another customer was mulling over the decision. The salesman had both rolled out onto the floor and hooked up to the same (component) feed so that both could be seen from one chair at a ~10' distance.
Unfortunately, I can't really give a critical comparison of the two--for one it was just a few minutes in a store, and two, I'm not really a video expert anyway. (I just listen very carefully to those who are, like UMR and Rogo--not so much for Sycore, Bill, and Auditor55.) I thought both looked excellent. The guy was actually happy to be able to talk to a real live Qualia owner at least. I think price and no need for i.Link was what swayed him to the XBR2.
We had an interesting discussion about the merits of expensive HDMI cables, too!

thesirjay 11-27-06, 06:40 PM I have my PS3 set to Automatic and haven't yet seen the problems you rteveal between movies and games. I'll do some more comparisons when time permits.
If you have it set to automatic the PS3 prefers 720P to 1080i so it will simply always have you in 720p (thus no problem with a 720p game or a movie playing). Unfortunately I believe the picture is better at 1080i for movies so that requires you to manually select 1080i as the output resolution (otherwise it will detect 1080i is an option but will choose the 720p option).
I am happy to hear if someone plays around with settings and sees a different result but for now at least the PS3 is requiring me to change settings from Fall of Man to blu-ray movie playback in order to have the best resolution of each. I only did a quick test with Ice Age Meltdown but it did seem like the details were better at 1080i than 720p (which makes sense as it is a 1080p flick).
divedude 11-27-06, 06:48 PM It is a 480i picture and was never meant to knock your socks off in terms of graphics (they have a purchasable 480p connector which I haven't found yet).
The controller is much much more innovative than anything the others have done although as I said it isn't as precise as I would have hoped and there doesn't seem to be any way to mess with its settings much alas.
thesirjay,
Thanks for the review. I would think the 480p would be necessary. I would get the PS3, but my left thumb doesn't work so well from the herniated disc's and I already have a Blu-ray player. That's why I thought the Wii controller might work out.
70" Qualia VS the New XBR2 70 What are the differences and which has the best pic? If you guys could choose between them which would you buy? I was at dealer last weekend that had three new in the box 70s, he was asking $6995 for the Qualias and Ive seen XBR2 for around $4000
I have owned a Qualia 006 for well of a year now..I was interested in the XBR2 and I have spent hours ( and also on different days) at my local Sound Advice comparing the two side by side. Here's what my eyes tell me.
1. The Q has real reds!. This is one of the Q's biggest strengths to me. All of the other Sonys (and other sets) lean to a more orange like red. I consider the Q's beautiful reds significant because it does so without making skin tones red. A tough task!
2.The Q is certainly more"film" like . I don't know how else to explain this. Perhaps due to the Plexiglass.
3. The Q lends a more 3D effect to images. A subtle, but noticeable and important effect.
4. The Q is more handsome!
5. The XBR2 appears slightly less noisy.
6. The XBR2 has slightly more "POP" to it's image.
As a side note, I must say that even though the XBR2 has a better contrast ratio, I was never wanting for better blacks on the Q.! They appear just as deep on most material. I think the Q's blacks are slightly more "inky".
Overall, I just feel the Q looked more natural and film-like than the XBR2 and that's important to me. My Q is highly calibrated by UMR, so it's even better than the unit in the store. If the XBR2 had beaten the Q, I would have started saving for it right away. To me, The Q is still king! My .02.

thank you
BenDover 11-27-06, 08:19 PM sophie, that is upsetting to hear about the 52" Bravia XBR3...i may have to check out the sharp equivalent (supposed to be the exact same panel) which is also much cheaper...wonder if the sharp's suffer from the same problem which may be inherent to the large size?
i need something very soon as the new furniture has already arrived for the den...
the bravia xbr3 52in is also really tempting given the promo the sonystyle store is running...no payments until 2009 (heck, if i can hold onto that cash for a couple of years: 1) i may be dead by the time i have to make payment and then it will by my wife's problem :D 2) i can invest/parlay it into more money)
Penton-Man 11-27-06, 08:45 PM Ben,
No disrespect to Sophie, and if I recall correctly he said that his personal Bravia was without problems but, I believe that umr is planning on purchasing the 52" Bravia XBR3 as his main display for his new home............which speaks for itself.

BenDover 11-28-06, 06:49 PM here is some exciting news for those who have been waiting for the sony player, it appears to have popped up in best buy stores...(even though the website doesn't indicate this):

RandyL999@aol.co 11-28-06, 08:03 PM I've read about the first 25 pages and the last 10 pages of this forum trying to get somewhat up to speed.
It's time to upgrade my 6 year old 65" Mit RPTV, and I can get a Qualia 006 that has been a floor demo at Sound Advice for 6995. It will have a new bulb.
This would fit into a HT setup with a Denon 3910, Halo pre/pro and amps, ML speakers, and Bright House HD Cable (SA8300HD box).
Everyone on this forum seems to rave about their Q... my question is whether it's still the right purchase today in light of BluRay/HDDVD stuff and upcoming technology
Thanks for any insight you may have. I'm blown away by the picture on the Q, and was underwhelmed by the XBR SXRD at Sound Advice with the same closed circuit feed. Maybe it needed some calibration, but the Q seemed head and shoulders above on picture definition.
I appreciate your help!

P-M,
No disrespect taken. My XBR Bravia is a great set but only a 32" model. I was just passing along what appears to be another "green haze" like issue that has surfaced in the 46" thread. I also recall reading somewhere that uneven lighting that seems to have created the "clouds" could be characteristic of LCD panels that exceed 40". I wouldn't take it as gospel, though, just a heads-up, especially insofar as outside of AVS forum I haven't encountered any other reference to problems with the larger Sonys.
I also have a 37" Sharp Aquos that is great with no so-called "banding" problems. But even given that it is a larger display, it can't touch the Sony in terms of overall PQ, especially in the areas of processing and CR.
Yeah, if UMR has no problems, that's a serious recommendation on its face.

Randy,
I think you have answered your own question. The 006 is an excellent TV and I love it even more with my Panny Bly-ray playrer.

John,
Just feed the 006 1080i and the Q's excellent deinterlacer will do the rest. I love the picture from my Blu-ray player.
MotorMouth777 11-28-06, 10:08 PM I love my Q-006 so much I can't seem to turn the thing off. 19 months now and I still am amazed and slackjawed at how awesome the picture is. I would still buy one again at $13,000 and at the $7,000 you are finding it is about as much a no-brainer as anything.
The Q remains the absolute best picture I have seen bar none................................
I just stopped by my local Tweeter and they had a demo Q for $6800. I told the nice man that if I had any good spot for it I would whip out the cc right there with no hesitation.
After nine months with the Q and I am still in love. If the damn thing could cook I might have to consider moving out to Utah and take it as my second wife! (Insert honeymoon joke here)
thesirjay 11-29-06, 05:08 PM The wife is mentioning a "bedroom tv" and seems to be charmed at the idea of a projector. Just wondered if anything great has been happening with projectors lately?
Headlines like "JVC announces 1080p projector with 15,000:1 contrast ratio" http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/11/29/jvc_projector/
make me think maybe they are coming a ways but I wondered if anyone had input? The Q isn't going anywhere but perhaps it might be able to have a bit more bedroom friendly companion (the Q would require wall removals in order to get into our current bedroom and I would feel a tad greedy making it totally guest inaccessible).

OK, here is the deal.
I shot umr a PM and he confirmed that the large LCD panels are having issues in a few different areas.
P-M, you must have misunderstood umr since he said he is considering an SXRD XBR2 for himself.
I think I'm going to look into the new Panasonic plasmas based on umr's recommendation.

Yeah, I’m glad you checked it out before plunking down any cold hard cash.
Indeed, I either misunderstood………or he misspoke while he was busy doing a calibration.
I called him yesterday to confirm that Bravia recommendation for you but he said on the phone he was actually speaking of the SXRD xbr2 display he would probably be getting for himself………..and I was just about to post a retraction to my above comment – but I see you beat me to it.
Regardless, I’m happy you went directly to the horse’s mouth for elaboration.
If you get the Panny, let us know how it works out and compares, etc.

LOL, i was going to post this morning that very same thing about me changing my mind like the wind changes direction...
my very limited search last night indicated that only the 65" panny is available in 1080p (65 is too much screen for this application; or at least it would be too close to the Q's size and my wife would have a heart attack :D). the pioneer has a 50" 1080p version that i discovered; then i read the rave reviews on avs and pulled out my previous sound and vision mag write-up on this set; checked some online prices and voila :D
then today i found out that docdvd, whom i purchased my Q from, is running a powerbuy (see digitalbits.com) for a very good price and he is an authorized dealer soooooo...i shot him an email and am waiting to here whether they have any more

This is a good topic, as once you've lived with the Q006 it's really tough watching other displays. I am also lurking/looking for a flat panel for our bedroom; current contenders seem to be the Pioneer Elite 1080P/50-inch plasma, the Sony Bravia XBR3 1080P/52-inch LCD, and anything else that fellow Qualians feel is worthy of sitting in the same house as my Qualia. Kinda like Eileen in "Seinfeld", wondering if a date is "sponge-worthy"...

One thing I will comment on . . .
I have a Sony plasma (I know, old technology, now defunct) upstairs and the calibration UMR did on that TV improved the picture 5 times as much as the calibration he did on the Q006 (which, I guess was already pretty close to perfect already :D) Therefore, I would highly recommend any fellow Qualians that purchase a flat screen to hang on your wall to have it calibrated by UMR for breathtaking results.

Actually, I ordered the Sony BDP-S1 long, long ago, before its very first delay. As time went by, I picked up a Toshiba HD DVD player. Then, I had an opportunity to get a PS3, so since it was so hot, I did it. But the Blu Ray Player was planned all along.

thesirjay 12-01-06, 10:29 PM Just a quick update on the world of PS3s - it appears that Sony did a bit of a fast one when it comes to supply. There are still PS3s coming into Targets for instance (they received another shipment last week I believe) and the price on ebay is dropping fast (800ish I hear now). It had sounded like there would not be much supply coming in for the rest of the year but now it seems that there may be a steady trickle.

Considering that I went 20 months on my original lamp, I think I did all right.
When I'm back on the new lamp, I'll check my timer and see what the magic number was.

i haven't gotten any of the gear yet but i look forward to seeing what the 1100 can do...i recommended one to a friend last year (whatever the model number was back then...i think it was yamaha's first model) and he absolutely loves it, as do you...indicated you just need to set it up and definitely need a sub.
this is sort of a temporary situation until i have more time to set the room up properly...my wife didn't give me much notice...ultimate goal is to hang the plasma over the fireplace with a custom enclosure matching the surround my dad and i made a few years ago...then i have to investigate what to do in terms of speakers and placement...whether i get any in-walls/ceilings, etc.
the v2700 is just me wasting money again (for now until i get the room setup; then it well get put to good use) :D i love me my gadgets ;)

If anyone is interested in a Qualia 006 store display model that recently had the lamp unit replaced please PM me.
The price for the 006 INCLUDES the matching stand and it is truly UNBELIEVABLE.
The 006 is located in the AZ and comes with a SONY 3 yr warranty.
I would purchase it but I have just bought a 60XBR2 and a 40XBR3.
The sale would be pick up only, I can't ship because the box is unavailable.

My .02.
Thanks for all of your hard work. The Sony tech guy told me that the Q has better quality optics. I thought it looked slighly better too. The new Pioneer 1080p plasma clearly has better black level and comporable definition. I really like it but the colors are not as natural and filmlike. I expect that the new Hitachi plasma when it hits the streets will also give the Q a run for its money.
I know of ways to greatly improve the picture of your Q but some of it may void the warranty. Call me at 310500-3500 and ask for Frank if you want the details. I offered this information to the forum but there wasn't enough interest for me to spend my time explaining.
Hi Folks,
Given that Qualia 006 and line is being discontinued...and the world is moving to 1080p....does it make sense to purchase one of these beasts...dealer is willing to calibrate...but still...should I wait for Pioneer 60" 1080p plasma...due out in the first quarter....what about using bluray with these...does it mean that its bluray disk get down rezd in a bluray player...and then uprezd in the Qualia 006...any thoughta are appreciated.
John
These are hard decisions. Do I buy or wait. I really like the 50 inch pioneer plasma. It is punchier and has better black levels than the Qualia but it is not as filmlike and the colors look more hyped less natural. You know that when average people are asked which TV they prefer they always select the bigger one. The 70 inch size of the qualia is more enveloping. You only need to be able to get back 11 or 12 feet to enjoy it. If you can't get back that far then go for the 60 inch pioneer plasma but it is going to be really pricey I expect. I would get the new 70 inch xbr2 sony and bet done with it.

the 006 DOES NOT accept 1080p...only 1080i, etc.
I know the 006 doesn't accept 1080p but I can't figure out how to force the hdmi port of the ps3 to output 1080i. I thought this would do it by default but I can't seem to get the 2 to sync. Does anyone with an 006 have a ps3 working via hdmi?

Go to this link and read about labeling the HDMI using two types of cable included with your PS3.
Still no luck call 800-345-7669 for support.
thanks for the info but I tried all of the above and still no syncing. I called the # you gave and he had me go thru the same steps that I was trying and then said it must be my tv. I called qualia and they said it must be the ps3. the qualia guy did say that someone called him yesterday with the same issue and was eventually able to get it working. I hope that is the case. I'll let everyone know what I find out.

sorry, i thought you were trying to get it to sync with 1080p...
when all else fails, power down the ps3, power down the 006, disconnect the hdmi cable from either the tv or the ps3, reconnect the hdmi cable, power up the 006, power up the ps3 (i presume it is set to output over hdmi)...that should/may reestablish the hdmi handshake and hopefully sort the problem out...if you've tried it, try it again :)
also, jb007 inicated a few pages back that the ps3 has an "automatic" setting for hdmi ouput, i would set it to that, at least for movies, so that the 006 communicates to the ps3 its input capabilities and the ps3 responds in kind by outputting 1080i for 1080 content and 720p for 720p content, etc. ... the handshake process should perform this "discovery"

thesirjay 12-06-06, 07:29 AM Just a reassurance that the PS3 does indeed output 1080i (and 720p) to the Q006. I have it up and running. The PS3 always prefers 720p to 1080i so you have to do manual setup if you wish to have it ever output 1080i to the Q (I prefer the 1080i output so I merely manually select it as the top output but some games need 720p so you have to go into display and select a different resolution). If you can't get it to work without using hdmi then you are out of luck. If you can get it to work with the standard resolution then its simply a matter of going into settings and down to display then selecting your resolution (you can hook up your hdmi just before you go over to settings-display). Swap over your inputs til you see it on 6 or 7 and hit yes (you get 30 seconds). Good luck would suck to have a bum PS3 so I hope that isn't the solution.
thesirjay 12-06-06, 07:37 AM FYI,

BenDover 12-06-06, 01:06 PM What's the V2700 for unless you use the YSP1100 for general use and the V2700 for 'serious' watching?? How do you like the '1100? I have one in the bedroom and absolutely LOVE it.
i haven't gotten any of the gear yet but i look forward to seeing what the 1100 can do...i recommended one to a friend last year (whatever the model number was back then...i think it was yamaha's first model) and he absolutely loves it, as do you...indicated you just need to set it up and definitely need a sub.
this is sort of a temporary situation until i have more time to set the room up properly...my wife didn't give me much notice...ultimate goal is to hang the plasma over the fireplace with a custom enclosure matching the surround my dad and i made a few years ago...then i have to investigate what to do in terms of speakers and placement...whether i get any in-walls/ceilings, etc.
the v2700 is just me wasting money again (for now until i get the room setup; then it well get put to good use) :D i love me my gadgets ;)
this exchange took on a new sense of clarity last night as i was reading the manuals on my way home to see the newly delivered audio gear :D
that last line of mine now deserves a whole line of exclamation points ;)

the VS show certainly had some revealing moments, but boy oh boy was it macroblock heaven!
i think the benchmark for an encoder would be in encoding that show without any perceptible macroblocking...those flashing/strobing lights were a killer.
i was also very frustrated with the choices of the producers re cameras/angles...i could barely get any good looks :D

It appears V S in the Chicago area was transmitted in 4:3 SD. I cannot figure out why the networks spend millions on some of these specials and then broadcast in SD.

I didn't notice any macroblocking. I was watching it directly off my antenna and not the HD Tivo. What were you watching it off of ?

thestewman,
What a bummer. In Dallas it was in 16X9 HD. Every once in a while I think they forget to switch over to the HD feed. I have the HD East Coast Network feeds on Direct, so if that happens locally, I just switch over.

my local cable provider, cablevision...maybe they were compressing the hell out of it for some reason but normally they don't pull that sort of nonsense...i'll have to ask over in my local cable forum if others saw this too.
when you say antenna, do you literally mean OTA broadcast?
ever since i had my brick chimney redone i haven't had an ota antenna but i recall that signal being very nice/clean, although i din't have the monsterous q back then.
divedude 12-06-06, 09:34 PM when you say antenna, do you literally mean OTA broadcast?
Yep, OTA. I have direct feed from my antenna to the TV and an antenna feed through my HR10-250 HD Tivo's. Both OTA and HD Tivo in the great room and the bedroom. I have 2 large antennas in my attic sitting side by side with a direct shot at the cluster of transmitting towers south of Dallas (20 miles).

Penton-Man 12-07-06, 11:43 AM Guys I was pretty disappointed with the Victoria’s Secret Holiday Show in terms of the audio. (Yes, I knew there would be substantial macroblocking due to the strobes, yes I expected the super models to look outstanding, and they did, but…………).
Something was WAY off with the sound compared to last year’s show in New York. The soundstage just appeared muted or compressed. Hell, my DVD of the rehearsal from last year sounds better than Tuesday’s broadcast did.
Plus I thought that the musical numbers in general were poorly chosen in terms of choreography with the models prancing down the catwalk and Justin T. appeared as if he was just going thru the motions and couldn’t be more bored with the whole show.
I gave it a thumbs down compared to last year. :(
Penton-Man 12-07-06, 11:48 AM Qualian Pearl of the Day.
Speaking of speakers, I think that Jim Salk may be putting up for auction on e-bay a pair of slightly used HT3 speakers (if he ever gets the re-finishing done) in the next couple months.
http://www.salksound.com/ht3.html
Considering the fact that he hardly ever puts “b” stock speakers up for sale on e-bay – if you’re in the market you may get them at a steal. So if you’re interested in 5K speakers that some audiophiles claim rival the sound of 20-40K speakers and nearly everyone concedes the appearance and finish of which rival their best furniture in the house, keep an eye out.
Speaking of great audio (like from LAST year's Victoria's Secret show), if anyone is in the market, Jim isn’t selling these but, these are the speakers I alluded to several weeks ago in the above post ……………
just plug in this title on e-bay…..
Salk HT3 Signature, compare B&W, Wilson, LOW RESERVE!

Flash card in the dash for playing mp3s; full iPod integration with steering wheel controls and song display on the dashboard screen; dynamic rear view monitor with super-imposed grids that change when you turn the steering wheel; real massaging seats; and night view assist that utilizes an infrared camera with a high resolution screen replacing the speedometer. still no luck but I have a couple more pieces of info. I took the ps3 with my hdmi cables to a sonystyle store and they let me hook it up to a gen 1 sxrd set. This set has the same limitation as the 006 being able to only accept a 1080i input. The ps3 worked fine with this set via the hdmi. So it doesn't look like its the ps3 as the weak link. There does seem to be some 006s working with the ps3 so it may be something to do with my particular 006. I was told by the folks at qualia that the 006 should be hdmi version 1.2. I have a manufacture date of dec. 2004 on my set. version 1.2 only came out in aug. 2005 so I'm not sure how my set would be version 1.2. I don't know if this has anything to do with why I can't get a picture on my set but 1 thing that was added to v. 1.2 was sacd support and several compatability enhancements. The ps3 outputs sacd audio through the hdmi and may need for the tv hdmi port to be at version 1.2.
Those of you that have the ps3 working with the 006, can you look at your manufacture date and see if any of them were prior to aug. 05? I had a delivery date of 1/17/2005 which is still earlier than the release of hdmi 1.2.
thanks,

jb, how do you like the 5200ES? do you let it do much in the way of video upscaling/conversion duties?
i was torn between the 5200ES and the Yamaha RX-V2700 and finally settled in on the yamaha b/c of its included networking ability (stream music off of plain old pc's) and simply my familiarity/admiration of yamaha receivers (i have the rx-z9 in my Q setup).
oh, btw, i got my pioneer pro-fhd1 yesterday; set it up and it indeed throws a beautiful picture. plasma is definitely different than the rear-proj sxrd...up ver close it looks "digital" is all i can come up with, but from the normal seating distance that look disappears and it is just beautiful...the black levels are astonishing.
hope my Q doesn't feel betrayed...i did end the night watching the Q and fell asleep with it...i couldn't possibly fall asleep with the plasma, that would just be too much too soon :D
Eileen, I'm sorry ;), I mean Ben,
lol and congrats on your purchase. I like the 5200ES. I do not utilize it for any video upscaling. I've got the Sony Blu Ray, PS3 and Toshiba HD DVD all going into the 3 HDMI ports, which don't need upscaling, and scaling is not possible via HDMI anyway. I have the TiVo S3 going directly HDMI to the Q006, with an optical cable going to the 5200ES.
I was chastised earlier on the 5200ES thread for purchasing a unit that is designed for video upscaling and only using the 5200ES as an HDMI switcher, but it sounds good, looks good and works great with the Harmony 880. I'm happy :).

so i'd better not jump on any v2700 threads and tell people that i'm routing the audio out from the receiver to the ysp-1100 sound projector ... at least for the time being :D
in case people don't understand that, i'm essentially using the receiver as an audio switcher at the moment

Where are my tickets !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Penton-Man 12-08-06, 12:14 PM still no luck but I have a couple more pieces of info.
05? I had a delivery date of 1/17/2005 which is still earlier than the release of hdmi 1.2.
thanks,
jp
Dude,
I think your display was in one of the first shipments over to the U.S. of Vay.
I’ve also got a build date of Dec. 2004 and my unit as well as jb’s were in the FIRST shipment air-freighted over from Asia.
My PS3 is hooked up to my HDMI receiver and then from there to the 006. No problems whatsoever. In fact the hook-up was painless and rather quick.
Regarding HDMI version.

pm may have hit on something here as both he and jb are connected first through an hdmi receiver...are you connected direct to the Q? if so, do you have your speakers connected to the Q? are they enabled in the settings menus?
thanks for all the responses. I'm glad to see that it is possible to get the ps3 working with one of the earlier builds of the 006.
I have the ps3 connected directly to the 006. I am just using the speakers that are attached to the 006.
the hdmi ports on the tv work with a dish networks vip622 dvr and a htpc that goes dvi-hdmi without any issues. I tried to get a jvc dvhs deck to work a while ago but no luck with that through the hdmi. although the dvhs deck did work through the ilink.
the folks from the qualia support seem to be better than most, although I agree with you that avs is the place for most accurate answers.
It would appear that most of the early 006s are hdmi 1.1 and seem to work in most cases with the ps3.
I'm heading overseas for a week but when I get back, I have a service call setup for a local tech to check out the hdmi ports on the 006.
Most of the issues with hdmi usually deal with hdcp handshaking and the repeating of this protocol. Sometimes having a switch inbetween can help facilitate this function.
Why do you ask about the speakers being connected?
Thanks again to the Qualia crew for trying to help one of their own!

thesirjay 12-08-06, 04:13 PM Direct HDMI to PS3 setup here with a December 2004 build date. Good to know mine was in the first build group (even though I had to wait for awhile longer for my shipment to arrive). I have never had issues with the HDMI connection (other than my cable pvr which sometimes would put up a fuss with handshaking). The PS3 has always worked like a charm. Good luck I fear there may be an hdmi handshake issue for you - you have tried both inputs 6 and 7 right? In case its just one port going out...

I've read about the first 25 pages and the last 10 pages of this forum trying to get somewhat up to speed.

I am currently in the same situation. I am however in an area that it is a 2+hour drive to see any of these sets in person. I saw a Q yesterday while I was out of town, and have it in my crosshairs. It's a SMOKING deal on the floor model from an authorized dealer at $6500 w/ new lamp, including the stand (which I do not need, if someone wants the stand, I would be interested in selling it, and this would probably finalize my decision).
However I am having a hard time spending the big coin on a TV that in some ways is obsolete (no 1080P input). Am I splitting hairs here or......? I just purchased one the baddest Surround sound systems around from the same source (klipsch THX Ultra2).
I've read quite abit of this thread, but at over 12k posts, I don't think theres enough room upstairs left for that much dialogue and information. ;)
Obviously many in this thread are partial to the Q, but could the XBR actually be better in a 1080P native signal?
Many Thanx in advance.

thesirjay 12-08-06, 07:33 PM Lamp ordered - apparently I am also in the "one of the first US units club" even though my shipping took a bit longer. I was a bit surprised by my SN# apparently I was pretty darn near the first as mine has lots of zeros.
thesirjay 12-08-06, 07:37 PM Another little surprise for me when I called up Sony... They knew who I was :). I have been a tad secretive and I thought that the ole giant had no idea who I was but despite the unlisted unpublished number they had all my info - lol I guess I must of run afoul of a database somewhere - perhaps that silly game Everquest gave me away.
thesirjay 12-08-06, 07:46 PM My 2 cents on the Qualia vs the world debate.
Plasma has its own "look" which some may prefer(I believe it has still been limited to lower resolutions).
1080i supposedly is exactly equivalent to 1080p 30 or 24 fps sources provided your player sends the interlaced images over at 60 fps the Q can deinterlace without a problem to get all the "real" data back out. For now HDMI 1.3 isn't really being implemented too much so our HDMI should be fine for anything that will be done for picture purposes (audiowise you will probably be running something into your receiver thus making it irrevelant that the Q can't handle some of the newer 1.3 audio codecs).
As for optics at the moment for a non-projector tv there isn't a match for the Qualia - the xbr chose to cheapen up a number of the components, so that even though it is using a bit more advanced technology in some areas, the end result is an overall worse picture on the xbr than the Qualia.
Feel free to correct me on any of these guys I haven't been watching the other thread debates but I think I am in the right ballpark on the pros versus cons.
thesirjay 12-08-06, 08:05 PM I can't remember has anyone purchased the 005? I am pondering a bedroom tv and as I remember it there were a lot of positive comments about it. Any owners or people who remember its pros and cons?

I'm not sure if anyone's seen a Q005 properly set up. I saw one about a year back at the Sony store in San Francisco; it looked terrible. Though you can find them for a fraction of what they cost new, I think my money will be going into one of the new 1080P plasma sets. Either the Panny 65", the Pioneer Elite 50" or the (upcoming) Fujitsu 65". The front-runner is the Panny, which I'm headed off to look-see tomorrow...
thesirjay 12-08-06, 08:19 PM While I am in a potential buying splurge I was wondering about the "free tivos" with service plan option. I know way way back when tivos used to have a lifetime service option you could purchase are they now going with a more subscription option where they give the hardware away but make it painful for you to actually use it?
thesirjay 12-08-06, 08:22 PM Thanks brt3 for the memory check - There are new 005s available but I wasn't really sure if they were an amazing picture or not. While large I think it would fit in the bedroom :). But I am not hearing alot of love for it so knowing this crowd that makes me reluctant to shell out the bucks on an older design of tv if none of you have managed to find it amazing (your reviews were what made me pull the trigger back in Mar 2005).
thesirjay 12-08-06, 08:34 PM I will be "going in" the Qualia on Tuesday most likely and I would like to make the most of the opportunity to clean it out. The last time I was very timid and merely used a microfiber cloth to check for dust buildup (I didn't find any). I believe there were suggestions before of using photo grade cleanser and lintfree wipes to gently scrub the glass window by the bulb. I don't believe that is removable so its a "blind man's" cleaning operation? Any other nooks and or crannies I should be concentrating on? That is a glass window correct so I can give it a bit of pressure without worrying about breaking it?
Any brands of wipes or cleansers I should look for?
thesirjay 12-08-06, 08:51 PM I see that there is some debate about a reasonably priced bedroom tv. I am not sure I could convince the wife that 52 inches is "bedroom" material. She does seem open to a projector but I haven't seen anything that makes me think one of these is the best option either (with only about 17 feet throw range that also could present issues).

thesirjay,
I just use the same stuff I use on my optical video and still lenses. With a flashlight, you can light up the chamber to see what needs to be cleaned and how good of a job you did. I would just use gentle pressure to avoid micro scratches, don't stick a power buffer in there :D

Well, since we've had the Q006 in our master bedroom (while doing some work in other areas of the house) my wife is positively THRILLED with the concept of having something -- ANYTHING! -- in a flat panel that will sit back against the wall.
:D
I'm going with a 1080P plasma because the thing that has always struck me about the Qualia is how well it's picture holds up at close range. I don't expect this out of a plasma, but since it will (likely) be a 65" picture that's 18" to 24" further away, I'm thinking it will be -- at the very least -- acceptable...

Let's see; I think the viewing distance to the Q is about 11 feet, so the room must be about 14 feet wide and 20 feet long. My wife and I were at the right place in the right time to get this house, but we were just talking about how we'd NEVER build a place this big. It's no palace, but just too big for our tastes and not well thought out. Too much work to take care of, which eats into the old Qview time...

Wrong
The 006 has ATSC tuner and its reception of digital OTA signals is excellent.

The TiVo S3 is one of the BEST purchases I've ever made. Though there are a few things that infuriate -- for example, it does NOT give you any way to tell how much recording time is left, and they have disabled some traditional TiVo file-sharing features because of pressure from The Media Giants -- the thing is a work of beauty.
My favorite "feature" sounds pretty stupid; we had two Comcast/Moto 6412 boxes, which are the single WORST piece of gear I've ever owned. Besides the constant glitches, these things had enormous variations in volume between both individual channels and from program to commercials. There is a setting for this but it made little difference.
The TiVo keeps volume VERY consistent; the channels have identical peak volumes, and the commercials NEVER have to be turned down. I only watch the commercials during live viewing, but this is a very nice feature that is The Way It Should Be.
Great picture too; a definite improvement over the 6412...

You're making me want a bigger TV for the bedroom than the 40" XBR I got a year ago - curses ;)
jb007 is right about the Fifth Element, but most releases look excellent on BD. Hope you are going to hook the Panny BD up with the analog audio outs, I love the way it sounds.

divedude,
Did you do an A/B comparison of audio over analog v. HDMI?
I have not tried analog, but the HDMI PCM is sounding pretty good to me. I'm wondering if I am missing out and could be enjoying even better sound?
divedude 12-09-06, 10:00 PM jb007,
Yes I did, both with hdmi and optical. I am running into a Pioneer Elite VSX-72TXV that is a year old. It just seems clearer with the analog feed and no processing by the receiver. I can pick out subtile sounds. Some folks just like to use analog with the LPCM BD's, but I like it on all.
But try it on your setup and see what it sounds like. I think it depends on how the player and or the receiver does the processing and which combo sounds the best.

Funny, I saw the exact same set today at Magnolia too. They were showing Dinosaur in Blu-ray. I thought it looked great!
I agree with what you say in your review regarding the cabinet. Not bad, but nothing particularly special either, especially for its price point. I didn't notice horrible reflections, but they had this in an area that was facing away from a lot of the ambient light.
Definitely a great looking set! Congrats!

Good to hear your thoughts about this set. I hope it holds up to an actual Qualia head-to-head -- although it will be nearly impossible to set them up in the same room for an actual A/B.
The single most astonishing thing about this set is the $1,299 price for the pedestal stand. No, it's not even made of Magnesium, Titanium, and Carbon Fiber -- despite it's Formula One-like price...

Excellent!!! (said with bridged fingers and Burns-like cackle)
thesirjay 12-09-06, 11:05 PM FYI - I heard from a local Qualia 004 and 005 owner that the 005 really lacked wow factor and wasn't worth the money. He admittedly paid list but he said it really wasn't that much different from the xbr. I haven't managed to get a chance to look at it myself but there definitely seems to be a lack of wow factor. He said the 006 was definitely worth the money it cost but he was more of a 004 fan (and I don't think anyone will blame him).

camchow 12-10-06, 11:11 AM does any of the Q owner own an oppo player and how does it look on the Q with 1080i through the hdmi video 6
Have any of you had an issue with a Q changing settings on its own?
The last few times we watched something on the Q (last night it was Superman Returns) it was very bright, no black...at the most gray and a little grainy, with very unsaturated color. Even Supermans cape was washed out. Being too bright, I would think, eliminates it being a lamp issue (remember Q owners have lamps not bulbs). This is not a DVD Player issue as I see the same when I switch to Comcast HD.
TIA,
Dave
thesirjay 12-10-06, 03:42 PM (remember Q owners have lamps not bulbs)
I just wanted to know from curiousity's sake what is the difference? I would have thought that a lamp had a wick and airflow whereas a bulb was totally enclosed (sealed) if I had to take a guess.
As for the changing settings - I believe it is only a single remote button press to swap from professional to vivid for instance. So it may simply be an inadvertant hit on either the original qualia or your replacement remote. I am hoping that it merely went from professional to vivid and you didn't lose all the customized settings (if you did please let us know so we can start writing all of ours down!)
Did you lose settings on all of your inputs or just that single one? If it was the single hopefully that points to a bit of bad remote luck - if it was all of them then maybe there is a memory problem in your Q.
I don't think anyone has mentioned such a problem in the past I know I certainly haven't had that issue even when the Qualia is disconnected from a power source.
GL,
thesirjay
thesirjay 12-10-06, 03:47 PM Also you may want to check whether your powersave mode got turned off. I know I kept my Q on power save (the 150w setting) for a long time before the bulb started dimming. That definitely has a big impact on how your picture looks.
That's a feature I like about the set. ISF'd her in powersave and switch that off if I need extra "punch" during daylight hours...
Lamps was a joke...
Anyway, it was/is on the Comcast and DVD input. I will see what my settings are now. I looked at the first post and found a few settings, but that has not been updated in a while!
I will turn on the Seattle game and see what my settings are. OH, I do NOT use the Q's remote, and do not think I have a button programmed to swap settings...will look.

GL,
thesirjay
Thanks all, I will check my settings now.
divedude 12-10-06, 04:16 PM So -- can anyone suggest the Top Ten BluRay discs for my NetFlix cue; I'm looking for stuff that's a 10 on PQ and at least a 7 or so on content...
brt3,
I hope you have more luck getting your Netflix BD's in a more timely manner than I have. About 2/3's are either put on wait status or shipped from some other area of the country, or both.

We get super-fast service from NetFlix at present, since we live within 60 miles of their HQ, and I think their San Francisco area warehouse is within 30 miles. We usually get our orders the day after they are placed. I don't know if this will continue to be the case with BluRay, but I can hope...
All: So far my settings do not look like they have changed. I can look at the cal. DVD when it gets darker in the room tonight.
Is there any one set of settings that seem to be a good starting point? I know there are a bunch in the first post.
Wondered if I might get some input on this. In conjunction with getting a new (second) display -- the Panasonic 65"/1080P plasma -- I'm considering the purchase of a BluRay player.
My uncertainties hinge around the longevity of the format; as Bill Gates observed recently, this will likely be the last disc-based format. Also, I'm not keen on rebuilding my current catalog on BluRay; that will require a great deal of Penton Paper...
Seems my options are:
• proceed with BluRay, buy a few discs, and rent the rest from NetFlix...
• buy something like a Denon DVD-5910Ci and stick with DVD for a couple of years; since I have a lot of discs (around 500) this would utilize an existing resource and would be cheaper than rebuying a significant percentage of our collection on BluRay...
• buy something like a Crystalio II, and use it to handle all scaling of anything that's NOT 1080P...
Of course, there's the issue of having two high-end displays. Whatever I do will likely just apply to the Qualia at first; it's still The Big Dog around here (with apologies, of course, to Elmo).
divedude 12-10-06, 05:10 PM brt3,
I guess I misunderstood the other thread. I thought you had purchased the Blu-ray player also. I would vote to get the Blu-ray player and rent the disc's, that's what I did and I am enjoying the HELLo out of it :D

Interesting dilemma for sure. I am in a similar situation, owning about 300 DVD's, and not totally sold on the long-term viability of BluRay OR HD-DVD. I recently bought the little cheapie $199 HD-DVD add-on for the XBOX 360 by the way. It's interesting, gets me in the game so to speak, for short money. I rent HD-DVD's thru Netflix, they have mostly been very cool....life is good.
Now, when it comes to BluRay, I think I'll probably get the Pioneer Elite BluRay. I will justify it because it will replace my DV-79avi from Pio, which is my current DVD player. So, I'll do a one-for-one swap, get some money for the 79avi, and enjoy the new BluRay and networking capabilities (photo, music sharing) of the Pio BluRay. In either case, everything is routed to my Anthem D2 preamp/video processor with Gennum VXP chip (same as is used in the Crystallio by the way). So I don't need a super high end DVD player, simply one that can send 480i over HDMI to the Anthem D2, where I let the D2 deinterlace and scale to 1080i for the Q to present in glorious splendor for me. [BTW, the Pio BluRay player has already been confirmed to be able to send native 480i over HDMI for standard DVD].
FWIW, I made a decision early-on that my best money was spent first on a first-rate TV, then secondly, on a first-rate surround preamp/video processor. I'm not sure what type of surround processor/receiver you're using today. But that was my reasoning anyway. That way, no matter what this crazy game leads to, every source (cable/sat,DVD,old VHS tapes,HD-DVD,BluRay,new Audio codecs, etc.) all benefit from the staggering video improvement and flexible audio processing, decoding, etc. of a first-rate processor. The Gennum VXP chip produces incredible results, both for SD sources as well as HD sources. I by no means think this is the only good way to go, just one of many probably. But it has worked out well for me :-) It is intesting to me that every since Anthem adopted the Gennum chip for the D2, that so many folks have followed (Marantz projectors, Crystallio, and others).
Good luck with it, no matter which way you end up going, the most important thing is to ENJOY IT!!!
All the best,
Brian
thesirjay 12-10-06, 07:16 PM I went the cheapest route (prior to the 360 option) the 500 dollar hd-dvd player (good upscaler for regular dvds but buggy operation/slow boot).
The PS3 - no front display a bit more awkward navigation - without the remote a pain to do anything but pause/play since you are using a game controller. Also NO UPSCALING on the PS3 it simply passes through the signal with no improvements - and sadly that is not a good thing as just about any upscaling dvd player does do a better job than the Qualia.
I now definitely lean towards all things blu-ray as the player is much less buggy than my unpatched 500 dollar hd-dvd player. Once they release a remote that will be a nice relief although it is a shame that its using a different technology than the Harmonys.
I use blockbuster's online rental - I only order high definition titles and I get quite a bit of use out of it. They let you swap your finished online movie for an instore rental (which also gets you instant credit for having returned yours so the next starts moving that much faster).
Having used netflix before I would have to say that for now there is no competition there are much more blockbuster options and I can bury myself in movies if I keep getting free instore rentals along with the ones they mail to me.
divedude 12-10-06, 07:30 PM thesirjay,
If Netflix doesn't get better soon, I may go the BlockBuster route. My local BB doesn't carry HD anything, but I could return there to get instant return status. Are you getting new releases as they come out or are you having to wait? With regular DVD's I was getting new releases the Tuesday they came out. Now I am lucky to get new release Blu-ray the following Saturday.
thesirjay 12-10-06, 07:38 PM My local BB doesn't have hd either but as I go exclusively HD with the online rentals I am not lacking - it just means I get lots of SD material from the brick and mortar. I notice some of the new releases aren't showing up as available right away (and I fear some may never appear).
So basically I wouldn't plan on being able to get whatever you want right away with blockbuster - its a patience game. They have a decent catalog but they aren't always the fastest in getting titles.
I treat the online as a shooting match I keep 60 plus items in my queue and most times I get one out of my top 5 with only the occasional title being listed as long wait.

No; you got it right but I wasn't terribly clear. I bought everything but don't want delivery until they get everything in; since this will take a couple of weeks I'll just wait and have them deliver it all after the holidays...

Well, 9 on PQ and 10 on content.
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) on Blu-ray
My wife bugged me when she saw the DVD and asked...............
1. Why does the priest at the beginning really hate the blacksmith so much ?
2. I really didn't understand why the Queen when into such a profound depression when her brother died, even though she knew that his days were numbered.
and best of all........................
3. Don't any of these people ever have sex ? :D
To see the answers to all of your questions in a resolution far more representative of the Blu-ray format may I suggest Kingdom of Heaven in Blu-ray.
Esp. to any Lawrence of Arabia fans out there. ;)

Amen to that; if it's not FUN it's not worth it!
Interesting that you mentione the Pioneer Elite BluRay unit; I've been reading spec sheets and think I might change my order with Magnolia to include the Pioneer instead of the Panny player. More features that seem to fit my needs better, and I already like what my Pioneer 59avi does...
Zechman 12-11-06, 09:40 AM Zechman,
So just how long did you run the Q before noticing the bulb was out :D:D
[LOL]
C'mon, gimme a break!!! I was watching Pitch Black at the time . . . . :D
Sorry, but been away from Internet for most of the past week. I have the PS3 connected directly to the 006 via HDMI, using "auto" settings all around, and everything works perfectly (meaning no 1080p, AND that the TV says so via HDMI so the PS3 doesn't even give me the option). My 006 was from very early on, though not one of the first 300.
My HDTiVo got demoted to component until I can get a suitable HDMI switcher. (Anyone in the market for a well-cared-for STR-DA5000ES?)
The weird thing to get used to was how the PS3 considers 720p a "higher resolution" than 1080i. Once you understand that, it's a lot less confusing.
--Dwayne
thesirjay 12-11-06, 09:53 AM FYI on the PS3 you can override it to use 1080i as its highest (which may be better for movies than downrezzing your 1080p source material into 720p and losing all those lines). The only problem I have had with this is that some games don't play properly at 1080i necessitating a change in settings but that is a small price to pay since it is primarily a blu-ray player for me.
BenDover 12-11-06, 06:19 PM does any of the Q owner own an oppo player and how does it look on the Q with 1080i through the hdmi video 6
i have had an oppo for some time; looks fine on the Q and i do indeed have it connected through input 6 (through a zektor switcher).

i'm a bit confused, isn't the 5200ES a switcher? i.e., it has 3 (?) hdmi inputs?

The problem is these units are being distributed through custom installers, not retailers. That truly bites the Big One...
thesirjay 12-11-06, 11:53 PM Kinda sad on the whole custom installers thing. What is the point in limiting your sales? Its not like it requires some amazing amount of skill to plug the power conditioner into the wall and then plug your equipment into the power conditioner.
BenDover 12-11-06, 11:56 PM anyone have any contacts?
