Is this Bizarre ?

Sony develops and promotes Blu-Ray. Now we find out it does not even build its own Blu-ray players but has Pioneer rebadge their players with the Sony name.

"Commencing set-up made clear that there were more similarities between the BDP-HD1 and Sony’s BDP-S1 than just the rear panel, as the two share identical on-screen instruction graphics, looks, placement and some fonts. The open drawer revealed the two players use the same disc drive as well, leading me to ask a Pioneer representative who builds its player. I was assured that Pioneer builds its player, including the drive, which makes it clear that Pioneer also builds Sony’s player"

Just ordered an 006 from Sound Advice, and it will arrive before the BCS championship (could get here earlier, but I need a stand made to fit it into existing cabinet setup).

Also ordering an S3 based on all the great comments here in the forum.

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm curious as to what output I should set on the S3 to pass to the Q... native or 1080i? My processor is a Halo C2, so I'm guessing I should use the Q to process the signal.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. My knowledge of the technical stuff isn't so hot, but I sure appreciate the finished product in high quality picture and sound!

Many congrats; you are getting a great display at (I'm guessing) a fantastic price. The TiVo S3 (with 2 CableCards inserted) will give you many hours of great viewing with ZERO frustration; I have mine set to pass the signal at native rate, as I'm assuming that Sony makes a better processor than what TiVo uses. Or else, they buy a decent one from Pioneer...

Thanks for the advice! $6995 from Sound Advice. New lamp, but no stand (so good, but not great deal). Was a floor demo for 5 months, but still comes with the 3 yr warranty, and interest free purchase for 25 months... kind of a no brainer.

For the audio/video are you using component with toslink, or HDMI with toslink?

HDMI for video, Qualia speakers for audio. Our display is in our master bedroom, and --though I have a full stack of Meridian audio gear -- I'm just thankful my wife allows such a monster in the bedroom (no jokes, please, Penton-Man). :D

I don't want to endanger her hospitality by installing more monoliths, and I always try to avoid asking for directions at all costs...

Glad to see fellow qualians with such great taste!. thestewman is right, not exactly a hangout for chicks although Monday nights after sorority meetings it picked up a lot. Anybody else seen the world's funniest movie trailer -- the one for "Rocky Balboa"?? I guess that's technically "Rocky 6", but they figured they needed to have a more creative naming system. Since old Sly is now officially in his sixties they could have gone with any number of alternate titles, but I guess "Rocky Balboa" sounds better than "Rocky's Fallen And He Can't Get Up".

Suggest your (hilarious) alternate titles below...

Hopefully I will get my first new bulb and will be replacing it myself (got the set in June of '05, not sure of the hours). From what others have said here, it's not that big of a deal and I am probably going to try and clean the "little window" with some lens cleaner if it's dusty, and I may even snap a few pictures while I'm in there for anyone unsure of the procedure. With that said, I would like some more input on the "Power Saving Mode" and the "High Altitude" settings a few (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9131222&highlight=150W#post9131222) others (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9003212&highlight=150W#post9003212) have mentioned without much elaboration. Exactly how much longer bulb life could I expect with the faster fan and 150W power setting, and how much will it dim my picture? Another thing which I have wondered: I know short on/off power cycles can be hard on the mercury bulb, but what will shorten its life the most? Leaving the set on for long periods (all day) or turning it on and off 2 or 3 times a day?

i wimped out on the "cleaning the lens" bit ... it was a friday night and the kids were due home any minute to start our traditional movie night ...

for the first year i had my set on power saving mode and i don't think it bought me any additional life comparing my bulb hours to others' (iirc, just a bit over 2700)...i did not have high altitude on though...maybe others have turned that on and can report.

during the week my set is typically on/off in the morning for about 2hrs of viewing, then on/off at night for 2-4hrs. weekends can vary but typically included much heavier usage with 2-5 on/off cycles and probably 10-12 hours "on" time per day.

Yes, I have been following that thread. It's a little scarry. I am hoping most of the problems are related to SD playback, and I won't use it for that. Well thanks to Ben (Re. "resume feature" or bookmarking on another thread), I may just watch "Riddick" by myself tonight.... if I have the time to hook her up.
I'm saving Field of Dreams for a special occasion.

The "Resume" feature to me is a big deal because often we just get interrupted and can't watch a movie in its entirety and leave the last hour for the next night.

If we were ready we could have it by next week, but we want to hold off on delivery until after Xmas (the tree is in the way)...

I will have it stand mounted at first, and will probably hook up a Denon S-301 initially just to get going. Simple and quick...

Apparently Sony doesn't really care how long the bulbs last anymore. A sign that the loving is probably going away (I would have thought they would want to know purely for bulb labeling and future use decisions).

"We no longer walk customers through how to view the lamp hours or reset the hours. Sorry not to assist you with that procedure."

Ah well at least I got mine and I did go the extra mile of cleaning the glass. I guess I have become jaded as the extra oomph didn't hit me nearly as hard as when I purchased it. I have also been seeing the new xbrs which from a further distance are extremely close so it wasn't the miles above experience that it was when I got mine in Mar 05.

When I saw a Blu-ray demo on a machine from Japan in March 2005, they were using a scene from LOA to demo how great Blu-ray was. And that demo looked excellent! All I know is “next year.”

I think the running joke at Sony Pictures is……….”Is that Penton asking again about LoA ? Tell him it’ll be out next year.”

The b*stards (if you SPHE guys are reading this, I’m joking, o.k.!) know how much this film means to me and won’t commit any other details to me at this time other than to say………
“It’ll be out next year.”

I mean they’re willing to show me all this other crap that I don’t care about but won’t show me anything on LoA.

I’ve dropped so many hints about sending the original print to John Lowry’s We Dust Em and Clean Em Film Services that some people at Sony are probably wondering if I’m an anonymous partial owner of Lowry’s company.

I’ve asked everybody from the top (David Bishop) of the totem pole to the bottom of the totem pole (tech’s interns) and it’s like they see me coming from a mile away and I have some sort of tracking device on…..so they clam up.

All I know at this point is, seriously that it will be available on Blu-ray in 2007 and it “looks good.” The “looks good” part came from a conversation 2 weeks ago from a tech guy who definitely knows what should “look good” now, after the initial subpar Blu-ray releases like TFE.

I’m going to watch “Riddick” tonight on the A2, I’ll post some quickie stuff tomorrow for divedude and anyone else interested.

Well Stew that is true and I wouldn’t fret about it because sometimes when one is so pre-occupied with other things you subcontract stuff out to people that do as good a job or better than you. :)

Initial thoughts…………………..on the Toshiba HD A2 (Dec. 2006 build)

Set-up is a snap ! :)
I’m talking you can have people come over for a showing and before they’ve finished their first drink, you’ve already configured everything…..there just aint much to do.

Aesthetics – looks good in any rack. Black with a silver thingee in front similar to the PS3….I guess the silver thingee is to make it look more expensive than all black.

Performance (in regards to the PS3) – regarding ONE hd dvd disc – This machine is slow…..I mean sloooooow. For brt, think o the difference between an F1 race car and your ole family sedan. Honestly, you Qualians that own the 1st gen Toshibas must have the patience of Jobe because this 2nd gen unit puts my patience to the test and the 1st gen units were supposed to be slooooooooooooooooooooooooow-errrrrrrrrrr.

Everything is slooooooooooooow about it compared to the PS3. One thing that is particularly annoying is that if you rewind for a little bit, I feel like I’m dealing with a laser disc player from the ole days and then when you start forward again I get an audio drop-out lasting 2-3 seconds which I absolutely abhor.

Picture Quality (at least for this one disc)- SUPERB !
Audio Quality (at least for this one disc) Good, not as good as stuff I’ve heard with the PS3 but, that’s obviously title dependent. I flipped between the DD+ and the DTS soundtracks and DTS sounds a tad better in the sections I listened to but, I’m not sure if this is simply related to a louder default level on the DTS audio encode.

Overall – After VERY limited viewing, since I didn’t have any glitches, freezes or other such nonsense that apparently plagued a significant percentage of Gen1 owners, I’m initially happy with the purchase.

The sloooooooooooooooooowness of the unit really annoys me but, it may not you. I figure it’ a tradeoff that I’m willing to live with in order to get hif def optical discs from Universal at this time.

I could not take mingling with the peasants anymore at Walmart trying to find a Playstation so I just snagged one off of Ebay tonight. Not bad as only a $100 premium for the 60 gig unit. Now I guess I can piss and moan about the lack of Blu-Ray content. Like where is the Blu-Ray version of Pirates and all the Pixar stuff............... I hate it when I just want it now.

Anyone have the HD-DVD player for the XBox 360 and if so how did it look.

Here is what Blu-Ray has in the que.

pm, dish man, what are you getting by the end of jan?!?

sorry to hear about the riddick title not being authored to make use of the 'resume' feature...the early universal titles and maybe even som paramount titles apparently weren't authored to allow this feature...i had totally forgotten about that...i didn't make much use of resume in the beginning b/c i generally watched a movie through to the end ... now time is at a premium wi al the holidays and such.

the startup times seems to be hit or miss across the board...wonder if it has to do with that whole hdcp handshake ritual...

the first gen hd dvd i have is slow indeed, but usually not an issue for me but that is an individual thing...i read that the second gen startup time is supposed to be something like 20sec, how long did yours take...i presume you weren't talking about the first time startup time but subsequent startups after the player was initialised? what is the time, after the unit is already powered up, between loading a disc in the tray and playback on screen?

motor, i picked up the 360 addon when it came out and the pq over component to the q is just as good as the standalone hd dd player...sound is limited to optical out and it transcodes to dd...there is an update coming soon(?) that will allow the user to slect dts transcoding ... i guess that is significant in that it will permit the higher dts bitrate?

sweet thing about the addon, very fast load/play...but i usually use the player unless the addon is already fired up from a gaming session and it is just a kiddie movie ;) i may move the 360 setup into the den with the new pio plasma...see if the wife throws a fit :)

One thing about my limited experience with the Blu-Ray; it's noticeably slower than a normal DVD player, but sounds as though it may be fast relative to the HD-DVD boxes. My experience was on the Panny; the Sony/Pioneer player may be faster still...

Initial thoughts…………………..on the Toshiba HD A2 (Dec. 2006 build)

PM,

Thank you very much for the review. :) Your experience sounds consistent with what I have been reading on the other threads. I can live with the little things as long as it works. And if I am just playing one movie a night, a little slow startup won't kill me. I am not expecting it to sound as good as my Panny with the analog outs, but there are some movies I would like to watch in HD that only come in this format. I think mine will be here Wednesday.

I would dearly love to see a direct comparison between a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player going head-to-head against a Denon DVD-5910Ci playing the same title on SuperBit DVD. Though I have one on order, I still may wait for the second generation of HD players, and try to maximize my exisiting DVD collection. Anybody seen such a comparo?

i remember when i was "considering" the 5910ci that umr advised me against it...

there is so much you can do with upconverting b/c after all you are simply filling in/making up information that is not there in the original signal.

a good upscaled dvd looks fine, but it just isn't true hd...a discerning eye such as yours should be able to see the difference; others, maybe not so much depending on viewing distance, size of screen, etc.

while i love to waste money on new toys :D, this is one investment i would not make...ymmv

i can just smell denon coming out with their own hd player in 2007, whether it be bd, hd dvd, both or combo...don't forget that these players are upconverter too...the toshiba 1st gen unit is actually a very good damn upconverter...shockingly so...it arguably better than my denon 3910 and my oppo 971

i understand the panny bd player is very good too; i would expect the pio to follow suit...i don't recall what has been said about the sony player but our own jb007 has one so maybe he can fill us in.

The Denon salesperson insisted to me that Denon will NEVER produce a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player -- because their upsampling DVD players are so spectacular. That's one of the funnier claims I've ever heard, right up there with "GM will NEVER produce a hybrid because their existing cars are so fabulous!"...

You can't get blood out of a stone.
Only thing is...... just prepare yourselves for a range of PQ difference between all titles of both formats because ultimately it comes down to the shape of the masters and some are in sh*tty condition.

unfortunately this is true...and i fear that the more mass-market the new hd optical discs become, the more trash we will see, not only b/c of poor masters, but also b/c of poor/sloppy mastering, etc.

it seems that at least at this early stage, early adopters/enthusiasts are really having a say/influencing workflow...don't think it will last though :(

As the Blu-Ray version of "The Fifth Element" demonstrates very clearly; this title would -- no doubt -- look better via the SuperBit DVD on a Denon DVD-5910Ci than the Blu-Ray version. When I compared the two discs on the Panny Blu-Ray player, the differences were not that great, and the Blu-Ray had such problems (filthy, dust-covered film stock, poor registration, flickering) that it was actually less enjoyable. Like the Q006, Blu-Ray/HD-DVD will mercilessly reveal flaws in the source (if viewed on a decent display).

As to the Denon, though it's a dream DVD unit the expense doesn't work for me. At some point I've got to break down and buy a decent scaler for DVD and SD sources. I sure tried with Algolith, but they were deceptive and slow with the Mosquito HDMI/DragonFly combo. Apparently, the complexity of the Realta chip gives some of the developers fits, and leads to a lot of bugs down the road for users. Which has guided me towards the Crystalio II; it seems simple and does a good job.

i thought you already had an upscaling solution and were just looking to "upgrade" ... i agree that you still need a good upscaling solution, i just am not willing to shell out the coin for the 5910...the 3910 (and the Tosh now) suit me just fine.

the 3910 will stay with me b/c it plays dvd, sacd, dvd-audio, etc. AND it connect to my receiver via firewire! i hope upcoming hd players include firewire as a connection option.

Yep.

First let me say, the Toshiba HD-A1 really does do a pretty darn good job with upconverting SD DVD's. In my direct comparison with my Pioneer Elite 59avi, I still found the Elite to be slightly cleaner and had a little more depth to it, and the color was slightly more saturated than the Toshiba.

But honestly, I would have been hard pressed to notice any differences without doing a direct comparison. And even then, the differences were pretty small.

My equipment rack is getting very full, so I have considered selling the Elite. But I do use the SACD and DVD-A, and would not have that capability without it, so I am keeping it for now, and still use it for SD DVD playback.

I was near the top of the list for the Algolith combo, but got really mad after being promised delivery "next month" for the better part of a year...

Speaking of the 3910, Costco.com is selling them at what looks like a pretty good price, given their liberal return policy...

that does concern me but i thought that burn-in wasn't really an issue any longer in this day and age?

i seriously doubt that my wife would want the console up in the den anyhow as it is right off the kitchen and dining rooms so she wouldn't appreciate the "noise" ...

if anything it would only be moved up there on occasion...but i have to say, my son is totally against it! he loves gaming on a 70in screen :D boy is this kid's wife going to have a tough time with him

You guys that have PS3's hooked up to your 006's ........................
be aware that the newest firmware upgrade for the PS3 allows one to choose between RGB and YCbCr as video outputs to the 006.

I think it would be wise to examine both choices with some viewing and see what looks best .....or if they look the same with little or no difference.

my wife, and a few other family members and friends, have told me they think the picture on the fhd1 is better than the q  i'm fairly certain they are primarily saying this because of the richer/deeper blacks and secondarily because of the differences in size...it's all good either way, visitors now have a choice :D

on another note, this yamaha receiver is awesome...i connected a wireless bridge to the network connector and have been streaming media files from the pc's in the house and discovered internet radio! also very happy with the sound coming out of the yamaha ysp-1100. all in all, the new toys are being well received...not so much the credit card statement ;)

While I am waiting for my PS3 to ship to me next week I bought the HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 for a measly $200. I was quite suprised that it looks and sounds pretty darned good. When the PS3 gets here the competing formats can just duke it out. I will have both bases coverd.

Now if they would just get to work pressing disks...............

you seem a bit mixed up here; the q will ONLY accept a 1080i signal but DISPLAYS it as 1080p.

so to answer your question, if you fed it 1080p it wouldn't show anything. you need to feed it 1080i...the q will then properly recreate the 1080p signal.

as for your last question, those that own the sony player will be able to tell you how it looks being fed 1080i, but not 1080p :)

hope that helped.

Just gotta figure out how to pick it up. Its 3 hours away, No box available so it can't be shipped. Weather sucks, so its either rent a UHaul trailer, or an Econoline Van. Any recommendations on moving the Q besides bring 3 big guys ;)
DiveDude is right; you need 4 guys to move this properly unless it's a simple straight shot.

I don't know how crazy you want to get with this, but you might want to have a well-regarded piano mover give you a quote. I have to move our Qualia downstairs at some point during January, and that's probably who will do it for me. This set may not look like it, but it's a beast to move without damage!

I would avoid an Econoline based on ride alone; these are usually stiffly sprung. You could always preload it with about 10-15 bags of Redi-Crete. :D

I'd look at a U-Haul trailer, or find the smallest possible truck with a liftgate. Since I'm a fanatic (and my medication really hasn't kicked in) I'd actually do what I suggested with adding weight to smooth out the ride. Since what distinguishes the Qualia from all other sets are it's optics, you don't want to have it bouncing around on a 3 hour tour...

Just my thoughts; as always, your mileage may vary...

Well the rear door on a van isn't quite tall enough so thats a no go. (Thanx FordVehicles.com) Time is tough to come by for me, so I'm going to call some piano movers tomorrow and ask for some quotes (Thanx for the idea BRT!). Its a 200mile trip one way... We'll see where we end up.

The Trailer will be a PITA given the store is smack dab in the middle of downtown with no decent parking. Going to end up having to double park in front of their store as they don't have a good loading area.....

If you look in the manual, it will show how the 006 should be carried (where to hold on to it). Here is a picture of it actually being done by pros:

two guys delivered mine; they got very luck though and only had to carry it about 15-20ft and put it down on a dolly...then it rolled into my basement media room...finally, the two lifted it onto the stand.

i know the manual suggests four peopl, but practically, when moving furniture, etc., it is sometimes counterproductive to have too many hands as there are really only a couple of spots usually where the weight can be lifted...i suppose the other two might be good to keep it from tipping

of course, if you have the manpower, then by all means find a way to put it to use...jmo

Do any of you that are using the Qualia SUSX10 stand have any problems with not being able to easily move it for access behind your television?

I would have thought some casters might have made things easier (maybe it has 'em and I'm just not aware...).

yes, of course it does dd...otherwise you wouldn't be getting cable, satellite, or your bd playback :) also, didn't you post that it works when connected directly to the Q? without hdcp on the Q's inputs you wouldn't get a picture that way either.

not sure what the issue is in your case...puzzling; maybe return and get a new unit...could be a dud/lemon...more likely something about the chain (a2 -> Pio avr -> Q).

do you have any hdmi/dvi switcher you an maybe throw in the chain to see if that clears things up? not familiar with your pio avr but maybe there are some settings regarding the hdmi connection/output that need to be tweaked for the a2 but seem to be ok for your panny.

Thanks Ben,

I'm grasping at straws. I was reading the specs on a receiver I am thinking of getting and it said it would not pass the picture if both the player and the TV did not support HDCP. I have been thinking about geting a switcher to hold me over until the new receivers come out. Any suggestions on a switcher? I don't want to keep pluging and unpluging.

It is funny in that some folks with the same receiver I have are passing the video to their TV. I checked and have earlier firmware on my Pio, so that may play into the problem.

I am still having similar issues with my q and a ps3. it may be that some sets are not handling the handshake properly. I have 2 devices that don't work via hdmi, the ps3 and a jvc d-theater tape deck. I also have 2 devices that do work, a htpc with dvi-hdmi, and a dish vip622 dvr. I have verified that the ps3 and hdmi cable have no issues by bringing them to a sonystyle store and connecting them to a similar sony tv (it accepts only 1080i but upscales to 1080p). I had some service people over to try and trouble-shoot but no luck yet. they can supposedly upgrade the sw via a memory stick and if that doesn't work they can replace some of the boards that are related to the hdmi ports. there may be some chipset on these boards that doesn't work properly. I'll keep everyone updated on the outcome.

i own three different brands at the present time, a zektor, a monoprice and a gefen.

the gefen isn't in my Q setup.

both the zektor and the monoprice are; i love the zektor for my setup b/c it is rack mountable and works flawlessly; the monoprice is a bit more finicky and doesn't respond well to my harmony remote unless i point the remote directly at it.

so while both the zektor and the monoprice work fine as switchers, i prefer the zektor for its form factor, functionality and remote ir response.

zektor has a new product which is an hdmi switcher but uses dvi ports on the unit itself requiring either hdmi-dvi cables or a cable adapter...they have a new model coming out very soon that simply puts hdmi connectors on...

Quick HDMI quiz.... An HDMI receiver sounds nice (free switch to deal with my more than 3 hdmi's) but does any of the current 1.1 or 1.2's support the uncompressed audio option? Or do we need to wait for 1.3 to get those kind of options? What does 1.2 gain you?

Lastly I just wanted to verify that there is no difference in the HDMI cable correct? I have seen some cables claiming to be 1.3 compliant but I am hoping that isn't implying that there is such a thing as a non 1.3 compliant hdmi cable.

Some people simply tweak based upon findings on page 1 and also common audio discs (AVIA) and the combination is such a WOW effect for initial purchasers that it lasts them quite a long time.......a year ?

Then when they want to "upgrade" they put out the extra bucks for a video/audio calibration with umr and viola........its like WOW all over again just for several hundred rather than several thousands dollars.

In some cases, it's better not to rush to get it done. :)

thesirjay,

None of current receivers decode the HD audio and LPCM, but the players do and pass it on thru the HDMI to the receivers. From what I have been reading the 1.3 receivers will be able to decode, but you don't need that if your player does. That is why I went ahead and purchased the Pio 84 with HDMI 1.2. 1.3 is for passing the raw, ie, compressed, bitstream for decoding outboard by a pre/pro or avr ... but there aren't any outboard devices yet that 1) have 1.3 hdmi, and 2) that can decode the new advanced audio codecs.

to pass the "uncompressed" lossless, ie, the player will do the decoding and pass the pcm over the hdmi, 1.1 and 1.2 are fine.

Thanks for all the info - I just wanted to verify I can get the current "next gen" audio out of my players with most any hdmi compatible receiver as long as the player itself has a decoder (which I am hoping the A1 HD-DVD and the PS3 do???) And this should be superior to the 5.1 out option?

Yes, exactly as you describe--and HDMI 1.1 is enough to do it, and both the HD-A1 and the PS3 do in-player decoding. Although from what I've read, in practice, the older HDMI equipment tends to have more compatibility issues.

On the HD-DVD side, there's probably going to be precious few titles that actually allow you to pass the bitstream rather than decode it in the player. When a title doesn't require in-player decoding, it can't include menu sounds or in-movie experience stuff--and I think literally all of them use menu sounds right now.

Blu-Ray is pretty much the same way, although there are a number of titles that don't require it.

So IMHO there's no compelling reason to wait for a 1.3 receiver unless or until you can mate up a receiver and TV which both support the "A/V Sync" feature.

As for your other questions: Yes, 1.1 is enough to support (uncompressed) multi-channel PCM audio and No, there is no difference in HDMI cables. In the 1.3 spec there is a new design for a physically smaller connector (for camcorders and other small devices), but the existing standard connectors and cables are okay for the forseeable future.

And how much they should cost is more of a religious than scientific debate.... :D

Lol, :D
Geez Ray sorry. I didn’t know that you own a pig! :) I must have given you a few grey hairs over that comment!

O.K. – to make a long story short because it’s pig crap under the bridge…..so to speak. Several months ago a certain Microsoft V.P., in his infinite wisdom, referred to some Blu-ray friendly Hollywood studios as “pigs.” I copied and pasted the link to some high-level studio folk that I thought would be interested in this non-flattering characterization on a public internet forum.

Needless to say, they were all insulted (actually, initially all thought that it was some joke and that someone on the internet was fictitiously imitating said V.P.) – until I assured them that in fact he/it was the real deal.

Anyway, I aint talking no more about it because it’s old news and I don’t want to beat a dead pig into the ground.

Here’s a Merry Christmas to all Qualians and all Qualian watchers. :)
I’m interested in who was naughty and nice over the past year which should be reflected in the opening of gifts tomorrow.

Is Ron really going to hold back on opening that PS3 ?
Are some of you guys going to pop a new lamp into your 006’s this coming week ?
Did BenDover get anything else new to attach to or compete with his 006 ?
Did miniDive propose to his girlfriend ?

WOW! Thanks for the fast reply... one LAST question... I would need to put a Martin Logan Theater center channel speaker in the opening of the Qualia stand. I can't find a spec sheet ANYWHERE for dimensions.

Can you tell me how tall the opening is? Again, my thanks in advance!

Randy
I mounted my M-L Theatre center speaker above the Q006. I made a shelf, sort of like a bookcase, that has two side supports and a horizontal connector across the top. The side supports are sized to fit just behind the "picture frame" lip around the front of the Q 006, and the top fits just behind the top lip. The shelf is 12 inches wide. I painted it flat black, and it is invisible from the front. The bottom is screwed into the top of the Sony stand, for stability. There is just a thin piece of plastic over the top of the stand, with particle board as the core, so it was easy to drill pilot holes for the screws. The M-L Theatre stand screws to the horizontal piece across the top, and the speaker front is just at the front edge of the TV, aimed slightly downward. Sounds great. I screwed a 36w 6500K flourescent fixture at the back of the top shelf, and it is an excellent bias light. Both the bulb and single tube fixture came from Home Depot. I made my shelf from an extra 3 foot wide solid-core door I had on hand. Just ripped it lengthways in three 12 inch pieces, and had a very stiff side and top shelf 1 1/2 inches thick.

Sorry, no pictures

Just a note to those of you who may be opening your PS3s tomorrow morning. You don't have to update the firmware to use your PS3. Yesterday, PSN (PlayStation Network) was brought to it's knees when Sony put up a free game for download (Gran Turismo HD Concept). It will be interesting to see how things hold up tomorrow when everyone connects trying to update firmware, create accounts, and do downloads from the site.

Good Luck & Merry Christmas! :)

The good news is that I think I have a few friends (or at least they will be soon!) who will be setting theirs up in the coming days. This doesn't do much to help my 6 year old so I got a few new xbox games to amuse him. Christmas is many things to many people.

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, obviously a Christian thing. But any biblical scholar will agree that December 25th has no connection at all to that event.

Christmas is also Santa Claus, Christmas trees, reindeer, holly, mistletoe, and of course presents. None of these things come from the Christian tradition (the connection between Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus is pretty thin, actually), but they're still pretty deeply ingrained into the American culture. Around the world, the differences are interesting, but the similarities are even more so.*

Christmas is also a federal holiday. That probably doesn't mean much to most people, but where I live, it means the whole world shuts down.

Finally, Christmas not so much a day as a "time of year" that culminates in Christmas Day. Charles Dickens brought us this concept in his most famous book--a time of year for all to be a little kinder, a little more generous, a little more caring.

And I suppose that for some, sadly, Christmas is something to be offended by. They prefer to say "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" instead.

So to all of my friends who read this I want to say "Merry Christmas". To my fellow Christians, I say it in the first meaning above. To others, take your pick. I have a hard time understanding how anyone could be offended by the Dickens version of Christmas, but if you are, then I sincerely wish you joy and good health this time of year--and you can call it whatever you like.

May simple kindness never become "offensive".

Merry Christmas, everyone.

I doubt the PIP feature on the 006 will allow 2 high-def sources to be displayed at once. I checked the manual for their 34" current XBR model (KD34xbr960) and it allows one digital and one analog picture, with the digital on the left side only.

My 006 arrives Friday a.m. also.

Yea I was annoyed when I found that out on my xbr960, but I found a workaround, I have a cable card aand dvr cable box, by sending svideo out the box (I also have it on hdmi).
Basically I use input 3 svideo from the cablebox whenever i need PIP, it changes the digital signal to NTSC analog and allows any channels to be cobined for picture PIP.
When I have settled on a channel I like I simply switch to the HDMI input from the box and that's it since the pip screens are small, quality loss is not an issue.

I like the 3.9 TERABYTE part. Whether there will be any disc formats after HD-DVD/Blu Ray is an interesting discussion; a lot of folks feel these will be the last "hard copy" formats. If FIOS is implemented quickly they may be right, though I will always be somewhat dubious of distributed media when the Hollywood Greed Meisters are involved...

thesirjay
12-29-06, 07:09 PM
Hmm with that type of memory maybe they will create virtual worlds instead of mere 2-d films. Because honestly I can't see a movie (in its current format) really having much use for anywhere near that type of memory.

brt3
12-29-06, 07:12 PM
Well, if you had true 4K High Definition video without compression (on either video or audio), you could get everything you want PLUS extras, etc., on the same disc. If you look at creating interactive content to boot, you start to use up a lot of data fairly quickly.

Or, you could always buy the entire Bond series on a single disc...

Have you ever thought how much it would cost us today for 1GB memory at the Apple days prices? I think $1 a chip (16K) was good and it took 9 chips per 16K. So, I had $36 into my 64K of memory!

Fellow 006'ers,

It was exactly two years ago on this date that I placed my order for the Qualia 006 with Brian Glenn, then of Qualia, at the Sony Style store in The Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, NV.

Many of us will be celebrating our two year anniversary of 006 ownership and viewing in the coming months of (2)007. And I know most -- if not all of us -- are supremely happy with the purchase and continue to enjoy the *viewing experience* watching the 006, which is saying a lot because in consumer electronics, two years is really like 10 years.

So, if any fellow Qualia owners live near that Walmart and are still looking for a PS3, they got em :)

i really don't want a game console for a player; it would be going in my den with the new Pio which will become the heavy family use set...my wife just won't stand for a game console as the player, even with the remote...i can't blame her as i don't really consider that optimal either...but, it may have to do...either i will cave in and head back to that walmart tomorrow sans the little kiddies (so they don't immediately rat me out :)) or i would get one from BB when i get back home and they have them in stock.

at least then i would feel confident that i could resell it at a reasonable price when the 2d/3d gen bd standalones start hitting shelves...the current panny is looking better but my only holdback is that it doesn't do 24p right off the disc.

the ps3 does the native 24p straight off the disc out, right?

can i ask how the better halves of the folks with the ps3s are handling the "situation"?

This has been a hecka of a day for me folks. I mean every good deed goes punished. Talk about getting caught as an innocent bystander in an AVS forum shootout!

Anyway, it's nice to see that were all here .............all the regulars from day 1 (except where the heck is Joel from San Diego ????????) and new owners coming onboard to carry the Qualian banner.

Like jb said, I am amazed that with technology marching forward and two years elapsing of time, that we still have arguably the best 70" RPTV out there and we DEFINITELY have the best thread on AVS.

Here's to everyone having a Happy Healthy New Year !
To all Qualians, their loved ones and all Qualian watchers - have a great New Year's Eve and pulllllllllllease refrain from shooting your guns in the air.

1. No it doesn't but, could EASILY be done with firmware upgrade if they are inclined to do so. I imagine alot of it will be determined by how many of Sony's LCD displays come out with that feature at upcoming CES.

2. I just told her that it's a Blu-ray DVD player that I like to stand vertically to save room in my component cabinet and she's clueless. :)

My wife is used to the video game systems (I have them all). The purchase of a new console has tended to coincide with something very nice happening in our lives so she tends to have a positive perception of them. I haven't managed to run into a remote yet but it will be nice when I do.

:D

as for the 24p, doesn't the sony standalone do 24p native off the disc? should be a no brainer for the ps3 in that case...hopefully they see it like i do :)

i never really cared much about it but with all the hullaballoo and now i have a display that can accept and display at multiples of 24, i want something to get every last bit of performance ;)

thanks :) it was inevitable that i would at some point happen across a unit sitting on a shelf and i knew that i couldn't hold back ;) only reason i didn't scoop it the first day i saw it was that i had my kids and my niece and nephew with me; they have all proven in the past to have loose lips :D also, i didn't feel like setting it up at my brother-in-laws house as would have been necssary had the kids known of the purchase...so i went back the next day while "gassing up" the vehicle for the return trip.

oh, i did fail to mention that i also ordered a new Oppo; the new 981 model, successor to the 971.

question, what does the ps3 do with titles that have pcm as the audio track of choice...will it encode it to output over the optical?

i'm torn as to where the final resting place of the ps3 should be, the Q or the P (Q has a non-hdmi receiver which could take analog audio but the ps3 doesn't have multi-channel analog out (PM, is this a possible future breakout cable???); the P, at least for the present time, has an hdmi receiver but only has the Yamaha YSP sound projector which is being fed pass-through s/pdif).

i'm trying to track down a shop that might be able to demo the in-ceiling/wall definitive technology speakers (UIW RCS/RLS II or III) for the final configuration in the den but haven't been successful thus far...they look well designed but in this instance i have to hear them first and won't go on blind-faith...

Guys,
I think I just found me an interim display for our hmmmmm…. how shall I say this….
Conservatory ? (Qualia-speak)
Solarium ? (newly refined and cultured person speak)
or
sunroom ?(Joe6pack speak)

Anyway, you get the idea, it’s a big mostly glass room out yonder attached to the back of our house in which you could probably park four Bentley Azures.

The display I’m thinking about may not be as good as the Qualia for critical viewing but has some neat features and will allow us to watch TeeVee in the mostly glass lined room in the early evening while it’s still pretty sunny outside during the summer…………..

Until,

1. I can convince the wife to put some curtains all around so we can eventually go REAL big and get a front projector…………and
2. My better half eventually decides what color/style curtains, with/without blinds, etc. she will choose.

As the above two conditions may take MONTHS  , I’ve got to get a decent TeeVee in that room.
I’m lookin at a 70 incher like the 006 but I can’t say anything more about it (not even the manufacturer) because it hasn’t been officially announced and won’t be until CES, so I don’t want to steal anybody’s thunder.

The 006 room will still remain #1 for critical viewing with its attached sound system for serious listening. :)

Meanwhile all you guys (esp. brt ) are welcome on over and I’ll break out the moonshine, we’ll tell lies and call out the women. :D

P.S.
Bendover….re. the PS3 questions, I rarely talk to those SCEA (Sony Computer) people cause they’re all too smart for me. :o

i quickly connected the ps3 to my qualia setup; setup was fairly quick and painless (i am so famililar with the interface through my psp...it was actually shockingly IDENTICAL to the little tiny psp); the video out was a bit confusing and then i realized that in "auto" it must default to 720p for the ps3 game/menu functions and when playing bd content to 1080i (or at least the native rez of the panel...i'll have to confirm this by moving it up to the pio elite plasma which can accept 1080p).

for sound i was stuck with using the optical out and the movie i had was actually good for this since it has a dts-hd ma track (which means i was simply getting the "core" but it is also a 6.1 discrete es track which was nice)...xmen iii, last stand.

anyone else view this on their Q? i wasn't terribly impressed :(

i was however delighted with the ps3 and all the geek display stats :)

didn't have a chance to register the bluetooth remote but will do that tomorrow morning or late night...if it provides a simple way to playback a bd movie i think my wife can survive :)

i was disappointed in the ps3's sixaxis controller, at least with respect to its size/feel...feels so flimsy and light...also a bit small for my hands...i think the 360's controller is better in that regard.

maybe i'll pop a quick game in tomorrow morning/night too if i have time (games are always dangerous as they represent a time sink-hole for me ;))

oh, i did wirelessly connect to my network and perform the upgrade from 1.1 to 1.32 before doing anything.

btw, did anyone here say that the ps3 was silent? *cough* i certainly don't mind the fan noise, but those posts i've read in other parts claiming total silence must be by deaf posters :)

anyhow, more tomorrow...oh yeah, i have come into the 21st century and setup a netflix account...have KOH, BHD and Fantastic 4 (one for the kiddies!) in the queue...any other suggestions, dd?

I've been up in the bay area the past few days and stopped by the Sony Style store today. They had a Q006 on display with the price marked down to $4,999.95. I didn't ask if that was for the floor model (I assume it was) or if others are available.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Also, on another note, the Sony PS3 sits perfectly on one of the side rear shelves behind the Q006 on the Sony model stand. I was out of room "down below" so this, combined with the fact the PS3 operates via bluetooth, makes it a perfect spot.

fyi for me on the ps3 once I patched the firmware it re-orders the inputs so that 1080i is preferred over 720p.
Once you select a resolution it should make you confirm and then that is the resolution it uses for menus, games, and bds... There shouldn't be different settings coming up at least from my experience - try going into display again you can always do the manual setup and select the resolution you wish as well.

That will solve your oddity but keep in mind that some games may require you to go 720p to look good (some bug that makes them be either 720p or else they downgrade to 480) I only know this happened with Fall of Man but I haven't played it since I upgraded the firmware so maybe they caught the bug...

first thing i did was upgrade the firmware...and when i do the auto it seems to select 720p while displaying the menus but when it plays the bd movies it displays the native rez of the movie, which is perfectly fine by me and what i want...that is, to pass the native res of whatever it is outputing thereby allowing the q to take it up to 1080p...i presume this just means that the menus are authored in 720p and that is why it shows 720p when operating the menus...to be clear, by menus i am talking about the ps3's menus, not the movies menus.

[EDIT: OK, maybe not, i just went through the setup screens again and you are correct in that it now selects 1080i when i specify auto...not sure if i should go back and remove the resolutions that i added as compatible resolutions; i.e., 480p and 720p or if it was the auto routine that added them also...guess it doesn't matter as they are correct resolutions...i guess the ps3 won't pass 480i?]

For the PS3 it automatically adds the other resolutions as compatible there shouldn't be anything you need to do (and it should keep you in 1080i all the time I believe now) but if you decide you want it in a specific setting than simply do manual and only select the resolution you want.

I checked with my AVIA DVD and the black seems perfectly set up.

I guess I will have to look into this again. I guess it could be the DVD's, but I doubt it.

It's pretty amazing -- to me -- how we easily and quickly become acclimated to near-perfection. Though the Q006 is -- by far -- the best display I've owned, it's fairly easy to see things I'd like to be improved in the picture. On this level, however, it's unclear (with some artifacts) whether they originate in the source or the display.

That being said, I am (still) thrilled with my set, and can't believe any A/V product which still seems to be State Of The Art after 2+ years...

PM What is the real story on this ?

Here is the answer from Sony to my question last month to PM

Tuesday December 12, 2006:
Sony Issues A Statement On The Source Of Its BDP-S1 Blu-ray Player

A Sony spokesperson has emailed the HD Guru the following statement:
“At this early stage of Blu-ray player development there are only very few technology suppliers capable of offering components
that could be used in the construction of the BDP-S1.
It stands to reason that we have sourced key components from
similar vendors, however, the design and development of the BDP-S1 was done by Sony.”

Randy,

First of all, welcome to "ownership status" in the club! As to your question, the posted settings are generalized. Every Q006 is a little different. Those that have had their Q006 calibrated by umr can relate that not only does he do a stellar job, but he is an extremely nice fella who explains everything. For instance, he opined how my chroma level was way off as compared to other Q006s he had calibrated. There were other differences as well. I guess if they were all the same, he could calibrate one and just release the settings for a small fee to all those interested :p
