It's pretty amazing -- to me -- how we easily and quickly become acclimated to near-perfection. Though the Q006 is -- by far -- the best display I've owned, it's fairly easy to see things I'd like to be improved in the picture. On this level, however, it's unclear (with some artifacts) whether they originate in the source or the display.

That being said, I am (still) thrilled with my set, and can't believe any A/V product which still seems to be State Of The Art after 2+ years...

They are doing much better now. I think it was the letter I wrote to the Netflix CEO explaining the problem and that I would keep the complaints up on the thread until it got better. Both my BD and HD DVD rentals have been arriving in a much more timely fashion.

Can one of you guys post the link that will have all the CES news. Seems like they had pictures of good looking ladies (CES spokes models).

And what a welcome spot this is! I completely understand why rational people abandon most of these threads; the automobile threads I frequent are full of flame wars and pissing contests. For some reason people who might never own a Qualia, a BMW, or a Mercedes (sorry if that sounds Elitist!) feel a strong need to barge in and take a virtual dump in the middle of the thread. Though that's happened a few times here the duration is usually brief and the casualties low...

A lady friend stopped by this afternoon (not to ask directions P-M! :D), whom has seen the Q in action many times before. She exclaims, "why is the picture so dark?" I respond, "is it dark?" She says "yes," crank up the brightness.

I am holding out until Sunday (the two-year anniversary of delivery) and will check the hours at the time of replacement. The Q006 should be looking great for the sixth season premier of "24" one week later on Sunday night, as it enters its third year of life. :)

btw, i forgot to mention something that i learned recently, the new Toshiba XA2 which is already popping up in users hands (and I am fighting the temptation to go out and pick it up...must resist!!!), has the same Silicon Optix HQV Reon chip that is in that Denon 2930ci unit for which I posted a review recently.

The Reon has been reported to give the same or better results than the 5910ci's own SO implementation!!!

This is getting really expensive...I need to draw a line and not cross it until the rapid pace cools down :D

if they keep upgrading the ps3 it may prove to be more than adequate for some time...i was messing around this morning downloading movie trailers, game trailers, game demos, etc.

i really liked the fact that both the Wii and the PS3 have built in wireless networking which gets them online instantly!

i had some "issues" this morning when powering up the PS3 which required me turning the hard power switch off/on but being a pc diyer things like that aren't an issue for me...at least not on startup...would be different in the midst of watching which i haven't yet had an opportunity to do.

first netflix disc arrives today and should have a couple more by the weekend so i'll be putting the ps3 through some extended viewing sessions couple with of course some gaming.

New Disc May Sway DVD Wars

Consumers wary of buying new high-definition DVD players because of a technology war reminiscent of the days of Betamax versus VHS will soon have a new kind of DVD that might make the decision less daunting.

Warner Brothers, which helped popularize the DVD more than a decade ago, plans to announce next week a single videodisc that can play films and television programs in both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, the rival DVD technologies.

Warner Brothers, a division of Time Warner, plans to formally announce the new disc, which it is calling a Total HD disc, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Two rival camps introduced high-definition DVD players last year: a consortium called Blu-ray, backed by Sony and others, and a group called HD-DVD, backed by Toshiba and Microsoft. Retail and media executives say this clash of corporate titans and their incompatible machines has left some consumers bewildered and has slowed the introduction of what is intended to be the next great thing in home entertainment.

Executives at Time Warner and its Hollywood subsidiary hope to spur sales of new DVD players and movies by gaining the support of retailers and cajoling rival studios into making their film and television libraries available in both formats on a single disc.

In addition to reviving the ghost of the war that marked the introduction of videocassettes in the 1980s, the high-definition battle has been exacerbated by the decision of several major studios to support only one of the technologies.

Thus, for instance, a copy of 20th Century Fox’s “Ice Age: The Meltdown” is available only on Blu-ray, while Universal’s “The Break-Up” can be viewed only on a disc and player built with HD-DVD technology.

Barry M. Meyer, the chairman and chief executive of Warner Brothers, said in an interview that the company came up with the Total HD disc after concluding that neither Blu-ray nor HD-DVD was going the way of Betamax anytime soon.

“The next best thing is to recognize that there will be two formats and to make that not a negative for the consumer,” Mr. Meyer said. “We felt that the most significant constituency for us to satisfy was the consumer first, and the retailer second. The retailer wants to sell hardware and doesn’t want to be forced into stocking two formats for everything. This is ideal for them.”

In a world besotted with gadgetry, few consumer products have generated as much excitement — and head-scratching — as high-definition television. Flat-screen, high-definition TVs have been flying off the shelves for the last year and are now as common in homes as coffee pots. Yet few people are actually watching superclear high-definition programming.

Part of the disconnect is the lack of high-definition programming on cable and satellite television, and the additional outlay for decoder boxes and premium channels needed to get it. The rival movie player technologies have further blurred the outlook for high definition. Richard Greenfield, an analyst at Pali Capital, predicted in a recent report that this would be the first year since the introduction of the DVD that consumer spending on the discs would decline, putting pressure on the studios that rely heavily on them for profits.

For now, Sony; Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which is owned by private equity firms in partnership with the Comcast Corporation and Sony; 20th Century Fox, a division of the News Corporation; and Walt Disney Pictures are all exclusively releasing their DVDs in Blu-ray.

Universal Studios, which is owned by General Electric, is releasing only in HD-DVD. Warner and Paramount Pictures, a division of Viacom, are issuing DVDs in both formats.

Behind these allegiances are complex strategic questions revolving around everything from manufacturing costs to profit margins, debates over each format’s technical strengths and weaknesses, and how these players relate to Microsoft and Sony’s video-game strategies.

(Blu-ray players are built into the new Sony PlayStation 3, while Microsoft is selling HD-DVD drives that attach to its Xbox 360.)

Another wrinkle is plans by LG Electronics, and possibly other gadget makers attending the Las Vegas conference, to announce new DVD players with drives for both formats; however, such players will most likely be initially more expensive than other players.

Jeffrey L. Bewkes, the president of Time Warner, said the Total HD disc has a better chance of catching on than dual players. Research commissioned by Warner indicates that consumers are willing to pay several dollars more than current high-definition DVDs for a disc that works on both players. At the Web site for Best Buy, Warner’s “Superman Returns” DVD was selling yesterday for $19.99 in its standard format, $29.99 for Blu-ray and $34.99 for HD-DVD.

Still, it is not clear whether news of Warner’s Total HD disc would convince the studio heads who are backing one format or the other to release their wares in both. Sony, of course, has placed a big bet on Blu-ray’s success and does not want to relive the sting of Betamax’s defeat. The number of studios committed solely to Blu-ray has been seen as a competitive edge, particularly because HD-DVD came to market several months ahead of Blu-ray.

And HD-DVD’s boosters say they doubt gaming fans who have been snapping up the just-introduced PlayStation 3 will take advantage of its built-in Blu-ray player and buy movies as well as video games.

In recent interviews, executives at Fox and Disney were unequivocal in their support for Blu-ray. They said they believed that releasing DVDs in both formats would only prolong confusion and the emergence of a winning format. “I think the fastest way to end the format war is through decisiveness and strength,” said Bob Chapek, the president of Buena Vista Worldwide Entertainment, the home video arm of Walt Disney.

Like other Blu-ray proponents and partners, Mr. Chapek said that he favors Blu-ray because of its greater storage capacity and other attributes. HD-DVD offers the same vivid picture by storing less information on its disc, which means fewer minutes of video and other features. However, among its perceived advantages, HD-DVD players are less expensive.

Because of manufacturing complexities, the Total HD disc will not contain a standard format version, said Kevin Tsujihara, the president of Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Group. However, several months ago the company filed patents for a new disc incorporating all three formats, which it could produce in the future.

Mr. Tsujihara described the new disc as an elegant way for studios to make their content available more widely “in a way that is not conceding defeat” for the format they have been backing.

In the short term, Total HD would actually add to the number of formats retailers will have to stock, raising it from three to four. However, Irynne V. MacKay, senior vice president for entertainment products at Circuit City, said she supported the idea because it took pressure off consumers puzzling over which format to invest in. “The simpler the future is for us, the better,” said Ms. MacKay.

What a laugh people are willing to pay extra for titles that they decide they truly want if this is the only high def format they can use but the idea that it is usable in a player they presumably don't even own is unlikely to be seen as a big value add.

Then again I don't see my movie collection as a long term investment and perhaps others look at it differently (although I can just see in the back of my mind how future "winner" format players may no longer play that crazy totalhd format in the future especially when multilayer discs become more common).

I think the only people that will be willing to pay for the the dual HD format disks will be Netflix or BlockBuster, so they don't have to stock both versions on dual format releases. I don't think most consumers would be willing to pay extra, they are complaining about the HD DVD flipper disks (HD on one side and SD on the other) costing extra.

Actually, from what I have read, this is the problem: people who have a library of SD DVD's rent the BD or HD-DVD counterpart and simply switch the titles. Free upgrade!

This is a big concern, because the more of this that happens, the less likely Netflix and others are going to be willing to continue to supply the HD discs... :(

I think there is a Hollywood Video on Yorba Linda Rd in Fullerton (close to Cal State Fullerton) that is supposed to be renting Blu-rays and HD DVD's out sometime in Jan.- or so they say.

A few days ago I posted that I figured the NBC peacock video recently posted by brt3 was originally from colorTV. I had remembered seeing it in the past AND recalled the avatar of colorTV being the peacock in a TV, actually it may have been the Q006.

Anywho, I know avatars have been removed from this forum before because they take up additional server resources and some have not posted appropriate images (I think it's actually supposed to be a picture of you). However, I always did enjoy divedude's avatar :)

It appears now that in order to have an avatar you need to become an AVS forum member (pay dues). I do it not for the avatar or access to special forum areas, but because I like supporting AVS, since I get to hang out with all of you.

Just thought I'd pass that along. It may have been posted elsewhere, but I never saw it.

the number IS a customer service number and you are promptly greeted with the annoying automated system trying hard to direct your call appropriately...after a few answers (who knows where it ultimately would have landed me) i was presented with elevator music...that coupled with me being fatigued as it is friday and the office is boring as ever, i fell asleep while on hold...so, it did work in that it got me through to netflix :)

(j/k about falling asleep; i waited about five minutes and couldn't hold any longer)

i did the online reporting thing (indicated i got the disc didn't match the sleeve option) and placed it in the mail today. the online response was to re-add the movie to my queue but i won't be able to do that until the movie goes back to them (btw, after sealing the red envelope, i noticed that there was "window" ... i didn't line up the printed information on the dvd sleeve with that window...was that what it is for? did i screw up and they won't be able to receive the disc until someone physically opens it up? ... i think it may have been less trouble to just keep buying discs :)

which, i did this morning...i bought haunted house for the kiddies...hope it is good quality.

no, the flick with eddie murphy...i did read that monster house was supposed to be good too but since we saw that not too long ago my family would pass on it for our friday night movie & popcorn ritual...and people think i'm crazy for having a 4oz kettle popcorn machine :)

I have mine set on "Automatic". Since it's connected via HDMI, I am trusting that the TV is perfectly capable of telling the PS3 what colorspace it can accept--just like it correctly tells the PS3 what screen resolutions (all but 1080p) that it can accept.

ColorTV's avatar was originally the (old) NBC peacock logo on a classic RCA television (I don't remember which one exactly, but he mentioned that it was the "Qualia" of its time), but after he had the Qualia for a couple of weeks he retooled it to be the same logo inside the Qualia. You can still see it for yourself on ColorTV's AVS User profile (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/member.php?u=7446627).

I have never received the switched our disk, but a few that were broken or unplayable. I always mark on both sides of the sleeve what the problems is in hopes someone will take it out of service. If I get a non-HD on one of my rentals, that sleeve will also be marked as such.

E-mail to them will get you a canned response. If you like you can post on my Netflix BS thread and we can get some more discussion going. :D

Me too; I recorded it in HD on the Tivo S3 and it looks pretty good. Have it locked down so it can't be overwritten, but that's a title I'd like to own...

Actually, from what I have read, this is the problem: people who have a library of SD DVD's rent the BD or HD-DVD counterpart and simply switch the titles. Free upgrade!

This is a big concern, because the more of this that happens, the less likely Netflix and others are going to be willing to continue to supply the HD discs... :(

Yup...back in those days a copy looked like a copy so these guys would rent a tape, copy it...open the case and swap reels! Movies cost so little now that it can not be worth the effort!

Exactly. You would think they would catch on by now. This isn't rocket science. They could then simply cancel the membership of the people who are doing this.

I would love to but so far all of my vacations have been to Europe. Perhaps someday I will have to try out somewhere a tad more temperate. Although I keep envisioning those horribly annoying tourists learning to dive in jaws movies lol I don't want to be one of those. Nor do I want to be the guy in "Along came Polly" so I better pick my scuba instructor carefully :).

SO, Sony will be introducing a 70in LCD at the CES show...is it flat panel or rear projection...i'm unclear on that...XV something or other?

It was a somewhat rare, rainy Friday in San Diego two years ago on this date, when my Qualia 006 was delivered. I still remember the two guys taking the huge box and stand off the truck and into the garage for unwrapping. After the Q006 was pretty much effortlessly set-up in the living room I fired her up, and it's been viewing bliss ever since.

So, on this 2nd Anniversary of my receipt of the Q006 -- a true reference benchmark television that today's RPTVs are still comapred against -- I mark the event by changing the lamp for the very first time, as well as making my 800th post :).

I was looking at that earlier and trying to find some specs on low light performance. The camera has really small sensors 1/5", so I doubt it will do good UW. I am looking for a small HD camera for UW, but all the small ones (HC1, HC3 and the FX7) don't handle the low light conditions I need UW. They work great on the surface. The FX1 would do just fine, but I'm getting too old to deal with something that big (housing, weights and lights = 45 lbs).

Hmm sure sounds like they are making something that ought to be a Qualia item but of course Qualia is a bad word at the moment... there's the tri-luminous technology I was hoping would find its way from the qualia line into their xbr lines...i was hoping it would appear in the smaller sizes though, like the 52in xbr3 that i had my eye on and then ultimately bailed and picked the pio elite fhd1 plasma...

No kidding; at that price point this will be something people buy mainly to make a statement or for the status aspect. Hopefully it will have performance to match, but there's some pretty serious competition when you see what's available in 1080P plasmas in the 60+ inch range...

That's the one I was replying to thesirjay about. I like small and I really like 3CCD's, my Sony 900 and 950 are 3CCD and take excellent videos. I'll be interested to see it's low light capability. The other problem is going to be finding a housing. Most of the housings are made for Sony. I'll let the guys on Wetpixel test it out ;)

Now if I could just find $33,000 laying around . . .

The miniDV tape runs for 60 minutes. It has the room to handle the HD info (and of course SD). No matter which type of camera you use (HD vs. SD) the tape will still move at the same speed so you get 60 minutes no matter how you are taping.

I imagine the HD cameras give you the option to tape in SD should you want to. Maybe you might loan/give the tape to a friend that has one of those miniDV players that plays the good ol' standard stuff. I'm not sure how these "older" players would play a tape carrying HD.

BTW - I had a dream last night (seriously) that Qualia was still active and they were coming out with an 80" Q by year end.

From Wikipedia - A high-definition version of DV has also been developed, called HDV. It differs significantly on a technical level as it uses MPEG-2 compression. Both formats share the miniDV tape form factor. MPEG-2 compression is much more efficient than that used in DV, in large part due to inter-frame/temporal compression. This allows for higher resolution at bitrates similar to DV. :)

I'm trying to record music groups & choirs, am using Sony's better Hi-MD recorder for now, and eventually want to upgrade both my portable recorder, mikes, and Mac PowerBook (software + hardware) to get a more professional and complete solution. Any ideas?

The players, at least the Sony ones I am looking at, use the same tape, they just record SD and HD in different formats. I have been told it is better to use the best tape available for HDV. But I don't think anything will be as bad for drop outs as HI-8 was. I am really looking at the HC7 if it will give me good low light performance, and it is small enough.

Here is some more info from Wikipedia:

HDV was designed to offer existing video production environments a cost-conscious upgrade path from standard-definition (SD) to high-definition (HD) video. Since HDV operates at the same recorded datarate (25 Mbit/s bitstream rate) as DV, HDV recorders share the same physical (MiniDV ) tape transport as existing DV equipment.

I have been having good service from Netflix since I wrote that letter to the CEO. I have been getting new HD releases as they come out. And in the last few weeks I have ordered some HD movies that have been out for a few months, they put them on short wait for a day or two and then sent me a brand new disk. So I guess they are increasing their inventory. This has happened for both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

I just wanted to commend JB007 again for starting this wonderful thread and providing links on the first page to important things we need to know about this great TV of ours. I wanted to try cleaning the glass next to the bulb for todays football games and I remembered someone here trying it out with great results. Instead of trying to search this whole thing, JB had put a link on his cover page. Thanks JB and also thanks to Tulsa for providing us with that info.

One thing I didn't realize (before the show) was what the MSRP of this monster would be listed as :eek: .... because when I was speaking to the engineer guy, we were talking only about its specs and capabilities as a display.

Anyway, I found an acceptable substitute at CES. Will post more later.

I heard about the produce and I eat alot of apples and oranges (part of my diet). My wife gave me some pre-moistened lens towelettes that I will use, then finish it off with my camera lens cloth.

Can't help with equipment ideas, but since you record music groups and choirs, I thought you might be interested in this. I recorded this on the back of a liveaboard dive boat in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea in 2002. The kids from the local village and their teacher came by dugout canoe to sing songs for us one evening (called a singsing). Their village is composed of grass and bamboo huts. I really liked this song, it is their National Anthem and mostly in English. Sorry about the video quality, but I compressed it a lot to get it uploaded.

I'm going to try the Sony MZ-M200 for now; it uses the newer Hi-MD format and will record 90+ minutes in uncompressed linear PCM format. This gives me the option to easily transfer files to my Mac and instantly burn CDS, or use the files in iTunes. Relatively inexpensive and very simple; if I really get a serious Qualia-type addiction I may have to upgrade to this:

I am glad to hear the Purosol works great. The supposed anti-stick coating sounded pretty cool too. Maybe with time they will perfect it so that literally nothing will stick. Has anyone tried it on the Q's screen? Does it seem to actually stop new stuff from getting on it?

Just to clarify they seemed to say that Purosol actually makes it harder for new stuff to stick on. They didn't seem to do much quantification and thats obviously just a neat side effect which is most likely pretty weak but I figured I would see what people's experiences had been.

The Panny system is kinda neat (yes, I know it's not state-of-the-art) in that when you have their system (65-inch plasma TV, digital HDMI receiver, and Blu-ray player) it's literally a one-button operation. Press one button and everything switches on, goes to the appropriate input, sound is muted, and disc play begins. At long last, Elmo will be able to catch up on his "Lassie" collection on DVD...

It will be interesting to see the Panny/Qualia comparison once the plasma gets calibrated. I'll have to get Jeff/UMR out, have him ISF the Panny, and touch up the relamped Qualia. Perhaps now would be a good time to upgrade the NetFlix account as well...

This is the first time I have ever cleaned the glass next to the bulb since buying this set. I have replaced my bulb already last year, but now my TV freakin looks awesome. Brighter and more contrast than when I first bought it. I am glad I kept my old lamp, because now I think it's actual still good, and will make it a point to clean that glass more often.

Amazing that they wouldn't include a decent cable at this price point; not sure about the free movie and coupons, but that may have been some sort of introductory special.

I was supposed to have the Blu-ray player today, but these dealers are ruthless. They'll have something in the back with your name on it -- which was the case -- and another salesman will sell it right out from under you.

Another bizarre FYI; Panasonic had a major faux-pas on this set. Their 65-inch plasma weighs 175 pounds just for the panel, and we needed the factory pedestal/stand to mount it until we figure out the best wall location.

It would appear that one ship -- holding the first shipment of plasma panels -- came directly from Asia to the West Coast. Unfortunately, it seems that the other ship -- which contained the stands -- either sank or got routed the long way around. So, 6 weeks after the TVs arrived the first stands have begun to trickle in.

Which is why I was at our local Magnolia bright and early -- I didn't want my stand yanked out from under me to make a sale to someone else. The store only rec'd two of the stands so they must be pretty rare. Despite getting there roughly early today (the salesman called yesterday evening) it would appear I wasn't early enough, as the one thing they took my name off to sell to someone else turns out to be the one thing I'm ready for now; namely, the Blu-ray player...

Yet, there always seems to be something that can happen with these solutions (disclaimer: I've not tried the Harmony, though I had one of the new 1000s on order).

As in -- dog stands partly in path of signal. Dog's thick skull blocks signal to one or more component. Macros get scrambled (less of a problem on components with discrete on/off codes).

Invariably, these problems NEVER occur when I'm in the house -- it's almost guaranteed to happen when I'm gone (damn that Murphy!). As a result, Mrs. 3 asked (very sweetly, but obviously frustrated) if the new "second system" might be configured in a way that makes it simpler to operate.

Just so happens that I liked the Panny 65-inch plasma, and it has this "feature" when all Panny components are used. Control codes are sent over regular HDMI cables, and the receiver they sell matches the Blu-ray player and the whole lot is brutally easy to use...

Since it will be in our master bedroom the other aspects -- like killer sound -- aren't as crucial. We'll see how this all pans out...

The players, at least the Sony ones I am looking at, use the same tape, they just record SD and HD in different formats. I have been told it is better to use the best tape available for HDV. But I don't think anything will be as bad for drop outs as HI-8 was. I am really looking at the HC7 if it will give me good low light performance, and it is small enough.

Here is some more info from Wikipedia:

HDV was designed to offer existing video production environments a cost-conscious upgrade path from standard-definition (SD) to high-definition (HD) video. Since HDV operates at the same recorded datarate (25 Mbit/s bitstream rate) as DV, HDV recorders share the same physical (MiniDV ) tape transport as existing DV equipment.

From what I've read, the "HD-quality" tapes should hold up to more abuse. (But I don't intend to ever find out.)

Listening to DD and others I have made the decision to get a HD camcorder sometime this year. I want to get the best one for everyday use (no underwater sports here). I'm not sure if I want hardrive or HD disk storage. I also need to see if better ones are coming out later this year. I don't want to be behind the curve!

I guess I still remember the dropouts from HI-8 that ruined more than one great shot - such as the killer shot of the tiger shark swimming at me with his mouth wide open.

I am eagerly awaiting some reviews on the new cameras that have been announced, both the HC7 and GZ-HD7. You may like the AVCHD Disk format of the UX7 if you don't want to do a lot of editing. The specs say it records in 5.1 and can be played back on BD players and PS3's.

Anywho, I love my first gen Sony HDR-HC1. It takes outstanding video. I read somewhere once before that it is best to always use the same brand/type of videotape; so I am passing that along. I started off using the QUALIA of tapes (:D) Sony mini-DV HD tapes (63-min HD DVCDVM-63HD) which run $17/ea retail and have been very happy.

All in all, breathtaking on the Q006!

I just don't have enough storage to capture 12 or more hours of raw footage at once. :o I have to select the best, than mark and than capture. All that requires a few passes. And while I am on the liveaboard, if we see something really cool, everyone wants replays at night. For editing I use Adobe Premiere Pro and Encore DVD, which I am going to have to update when I go to HD.

So am I back in the elitist club :cool:

Happy Anniversary all its been a great haul and while I begin to suspect that something nicer is on the horizon I think all of us are on the most comfortable life raft imaginable while the turgid waters of development churn out product after product (some quite inferior). I believe they cracked HD DVD a month or so ago also. They should have done a better job of encrypting the keys. But like you say, it all gets broke. And then a new method is developed to prevent copying, and it goes round and round. This cycle has been going on since the 70's when software developers tried to copy protect PC software. Back them I had more fun with a couple of friends breaking the copy protection than playing the games. We never did anything with the copies other than share them among ourselves.

Gear: Sony Qualia 006 70", Revel Performa F32 + others Speaker System, Sunfire TGP-5 and matching 7200 Amplifier, Toshiba A-1 HD-DVD, and Playstation 3.

Problem:

Every 3 months the bulb on my television burns out. Recently, the 5th time in a little over 1 year. To answer the Qualia customer service reps question, No, I work, so I do not watch television all the time . Sony has replaced the bulb each time and even picked up the television and replace the fan, the ballast, etc. It did not work.

Questions:

Has anyone else who has own this TV experienced the same problem? Solution?

Obviously I am running out of patience with this television. If there is no apparent solution, I believe Sony should either provide me with a comparable television free of charge and refund the difference in price (PS they don't manufacture the Qualia 006 anymore). Or just give me a refund?

Has anyone had to do that before? Was there a particular contact?

I have had my Qualia 006 -- from Day One -- hooked to one of the Monster Cable Reference Series voltage stabilizers. I have the two-piece set; one filters the power and the other gives a rock-steady 120V output. I will get lightly roasted for this, but I am still on my original bulb (though I have two replacements ready to go). I'm convinced the voltage stabilizer helps in this regard...

No roasting from me. Just wondering how many hours you have on the bulb. And I agree with stabilizing the voltage. I have all my equipment on UPS's with voltage regulation.

I'll have to check that out. I think if you averaged our usage it would be something like:

2 hours per night X 745 nights = 1,490 hours

Have to see how close I come...

That's a bummer :( If they can't fix it, at the very least I would suggest getting them to supply you with lifetime bulbs and a spare to have on hand.

Problem:

To answer the Qualia customer service reps question, No, I work, so I do not watch television all the time . Sony has replaced the bulb each time and even picked up the television and replace the fan, the ballast, etc. It did not work.

Questions:

Has anyone else who has own this TV experienced the same problem? Solution?

Obviously I am running out of patience with this television. If there is no apparent solution, I believe Sony should either provide me with a comparable television free of charge and refund the difference in price (PS they don't manufacture the Qualia 006 anymore). Or just give me a refund?

Has anyone had to do that before? Was there a particular contact?

I can tell you with certainty that no one has ever reported a problem like yours on this forum in this thread. The general consensus seems to be that the lamps normally run for just shy of 2000 hours before burning out. Since it's unlikely that every lamp you've tried has been defective, it seems clear enought that something in your TV is either over-driving the lamp's voltage or dipping it low enough to cause a power cycle. Repeated power-cycles reduces the life of the lamp, but I don't think that alone would account for your problem. It would be interesting to hear about how many hours and power cycles your set reports in the service menu. (There is a link to instructions for checking the lamp hours in the first post of this thread.)

Those who have reported other types of serious problems have told us that Qualia service has been very good. I'm confident they'll take care of you somehow and can probably replace the set entirely if necessary.

I know that's not much of a help, but keep us posted on your progress. You're part of the Qualia family now.

brt3: I would only roast you if you suggested switching to a "high quality power cord" or some such nonsense. ;)

This is NOT a detailed review or comparo, but I just took delivery of this monster. I have a very nice simple system set up, with the TV, a Panny Blu-ray player, and a Panny digital receiver. One touch operation, which my wife was begging for -- and it works with hardly any setup.

On to PQ...

I just did some very quick adjustments to get it looking right to my eyes. A true comparison will have to wait until the Panny gets an ISF calibration (wonder if UMR/Jeff has done one of these?).

This set does a VERY credible job. It's interesting how some people love the look of plasma and others don't. I think it looks stunning on some footage, but I have a personal problem with motion on Plasma TVs -- to my eyes any rapid motion always takes on a stroboscopic quality, and this alone ruins these sets for critical viewing. I don't know why I'm so sensitive to this; perhaps it's because one of my favorite vices is watching Formula One...

At this early stage I do not think the Panny comes close to the black levels and shadow details of the Qualia. We'll see what happens with a little more tweaking.

Anyway, this is not a "thumbs down" -- I really like this set and had to have something comparable in size to the Qualia for viewing in another room. This set, like the Qualia, has tremendous resolution -- which allows you to get very close (4-5 feet on the Panny) before the picture starts to "break down"...

I've experienced the same with my Pioneer plasma. It looks just like rainbow effect on a DLP, only to a much lesser degree. I never saw it on a plasma before actually getting one home.

I wonder if the biggest factor affecting maxium realistic screen sizes is going to be deliverability. The Qualia absolutely stretched that to the limit (at least in our house). It's going to be tough for a lot of people to even consider anything bigger than a 65 to 70-inch plasma -- these things are starting to stretch the limits of two guys as far as unloading and delivery, and my 65-inch Panny got dinged in shipping. I'm using the hey-uhl out of the thing looking for bugs, and will get a replacement (the manager says) in about two weeks...

Quick note on the Panny; we just watched "Corpse Bride" on Blu-ray -- I think anyone on this forum would be pleased with the Panasonic 65-inch 1080P plasma as a second set. So far it's not quite up to the standard set by the Q006, but on some material it's pretty close!

Well, an MVR...will that be like a MDR? If you do not get the MVR you get sick. How many hours is the MVR set to? :D

I think this comes from when we first had a Kloss projector. We killed it watching News and sitcoms. Had to put 3 new Tubes in it and that cost lots of Penton Paper. Now I use the Q for only Movies (DVD) and football.

Yes, I did retire a few Months ago. I don't know how I had time to work. We bought a class B RV and hope to get away more this season.

Funny about the 'vette. I had several...both when we lived in Fairfield, CT. One was a 425HP split window. I wish I still had it. I bought it from a CT state cop and had a picture with lights and State Police logo!

I agree about the amount of Penton-Paper involved, but I've looked hard and low and this is -- for me -- the best solution for distributing digital music through the whole house in a simple manner that works for everyone. I use a NAS device to hold our music, and can listen to anything anywhere in the house -- even outside -- and the thing just works without any hassle or frustration...

I ran into one of those "site not available" times the other day and it made me realize how much it would suck if this forum actually did go away. While our post rates vary its good to know that sharing our latest news (technical or not) is always an option and you will even get a few very informed opinions more often than not.

Speaking of what is happening... I had a bit of a technophile nightmare last week. I was looking everywhere for my Shure e500 (which coincidently enough cost 500) headphones (these are the in ear ones with 2 bases and a treble inside truly awesome ones).

I eventually found them in the parking lot run over. Being a new father I had to think rationally and decide that rushing out to buy a new pair really was something I should at least ponder. I figured what the heck lets see if I can get them repaired (one side was still fine). I called up shure and emailed and I was shocked to be told they don't repair them BUT they would probably replace them free of charge. Thats pretty nice considering they were damaged by something entirely out of manufacturers control (and I was quite upfront about that). The new headphones arrived today and I breathed a big sigh of relief.

So there is one tale of a very good manufacturer (and a unlucky turned lucky scenario).

They are passive noise canceling. I tried the "famous" bose noise-canceling headphones and they were not as good. The shure make a very good fit and block out a ton of noise - the shure site has an interesting demo which at least if yoiu listen to music seemed pretty accurate. I would say the bose were not too bad at airplane noise but I found them to be not that great in sound quality and they weren't as good at canceling erratic noise (like the construction noise as they prepare a new stadium outside of my office).

I have some Sennheiser NC headphones that I really like for wearing on liveaboards. They work and sound good. Really cut down on the diesel engine noise when moving from dive site to dive site. I would get some buds, but I need to make sure my ears get dry between dives and I am afraid to plug them with the buds.

I also have the Bose 2, the ones with the large ear muffs. As you say they work good on airplanes. After 17 hours of flying the Sennheisers push on my ears too much and the Bose fit over the outside.

Those are the Bose 701 I got about 10 years ago. I also have the center speaker which I mounted on top of the Q006 with L brackets and using the screws from the tv. I have an updated picture.

I have the Bose 601's and 602's with that center channel in my bedroom. I liked it when Bose made bigger speakers. :)

A friend of mine has a pair of those 701s. She has them setup in a 2 channel audio only application. Remarkably good sounding speakers. :) Cost me quite a bit of Penton paper to upgrade my system to sound as good.

Latest news, I barely made it to see Shakira’s performance at the Grammy’s. I was seated so far away that I’m glad I recorded it at home and plan to watch on the Q this weekend with a new sound system I recently installed…….to be calibrated by umr of course.

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a 2007 Q006. Sadly, the entire Qualia line was discontinued by Sony last year. There are those that would say get something new and in 1080p, while others will tell you the Qualia 006 still has the best build and picture out there. The choice is yours. Since the Qualia was discontinued, there have been reports of brand new units selling for a significant discount, so selling may not make much sense with the loss you may take as a first waver, who likely payed retail.

BTW, is it just me, or does Mayer look an awful lot like Edward Scissorhands?

Crazyic3 Q006 Vs. New...The 1080 P does look very good. I had the XBR 950 & have upgraded to the XBR 2 ... With the faster Video System 2.5 i think it is way ahead of most other sets on the market. The XBR 2 does not have Screen saver , & they dropped Sub woofer in the Sound system. I liked the Monitor Day with no sound because now most have Sound Systems. Lot of shows My Wife watches though just use's the TV sound simple... The Mits is DLP... That is a differant way of doing things. Look at both very close. The Q 006 has been a very top of the line Quality well built set. I have spent lots of time watching the Q006 . Don't go Crazy on Us...

125 gallon aquarium with Metal Halide lighting etc. Had it for about 7 years, and finally dismantled it for good when we moved almost 2 years ago. Challenging, interesting, entertaining hobby. Guests would always be drawn immediately to the tank.

That's a nice size tank. I have it from a good source the critters in the tank enjoy watching the people as much as the people like watching them :cool:

I'm looking to buy a new RPTV. I was leaning toward a the 70XBR2, but I see an ad in my paper for a clearance Q006 at Andersons TV for only $3977. Any advice on which would be better. I think I can buy the XBR2 for a similar prive on the internet, so the $ are not the issue. I am most interested in PQ. Also can the Q006 display 1080P from Bluray or HDDVD or only 1080i? Thanks for the help.

I guess I am a little biased but I put in my vote for the Q. It is a fantastic tv. That is a great price even if it has a few nicks in it (I assume "clearance" means floor model?)! Ask them if the store would throw in one bulb at n/c though Sony themselves might do it. They used to for all Q owners but I don't know if they changed that policy.

Either set will make you happy but I personally think the Q is still in its own class.

I have both Blu-ray and HD DVD. In my opinion the 006 does a great job of deinterlacing to 1080p.

Yes, it has 2 HDMI inputs. You feed it 1080i and the 006 does the deinterlacing to display at 1080p.
