View Full Version : QUALIA 006 Owner's Thread
ManWithAPlan 02-25-08, 08:49 PM Well, I will look at their web site again, but with the BD30, it would not help me now.
No, you're right, but I guess I wouldn't want to make a big decision on the center of a system like a pre/pro based on 1 specific BluRay player, or any 1 specific source component for that matter. However, if you're stuck on that player, then maybe check out the Yamaha offerings for receivers or pre-pro's...I recall that UMR expressed a good deal of respect for some of their latest offerings (at least he did 2 years ago). But I just think if you were unhappy about the longevity, or long term commitment of the Meridian folks to your old pre-pro, you should not let 1 small source component dictate your purchase for you. It sounds like given your Meridian ownership, etc. that audio quality is especially important to you, among other things...I would find yourself the best sounding pre/pro you can find, and then make sure that the flexibility is there, that the company has a long, well-documented history of offering exceptional support with new software, new feature releases for no charge, etc. as well as a willingness to go the extra mile for the customer, and then finally, a history of competitive, reasonably priced hardware upgrades for when (not if) the day comes that some hardware changes are necessary.

I agree with what you said. However, to get started in Blu I did get the Panny. Glad I did, too. Just before the format war ended, there were deals to be had with 10 free Blu DVD's. Anyway, been busy and may wait a bit longer to upgrade. I have a small Yamaha receiver in the den. I like their quality. In fact the thing that impressed me about Yamaha is that they have great quality from the top of their line all the way to the bottom. Some vendors do not do that. I still have one reciever in my wifes sewing room that will not die. At one time, only the people in Japan I worked with did not like Yahama Electronics...but for a strange reason. Still I have never had a receiver in my main room!

Not bad for an MSRP of $500. Now we need to look for coupons and a BB price match!
RandyL999@aol.co 02-26-08, 04:57 PM Had the new optical block put in today... some interesting observations...
I bought the unit from Sound Advice 15 months ago, but had been a floor demo model there, so I'm sure it had plenty of hours on it. They put in a new bulb for me as part of the deal when I bought it.
Interestingly enough, there was VERY little dust inside the unit! I was surprised after seeing some of the pictures here. The cost of the block was $4500, and the labor charged to Sony was $300 for the warranty service.
The tech told me that the labor was almost double that of the block replacement on a an XBR1 or 2 ($160).
Tech was from Plaza Electronics, and highly competent... total repair time was 2 hours including having to back in because of leaving the connector to the bulb unconnected.
Nice to not have the yellow stain anymore. Here's hoping the replacement block had some changes from the originals so as to not need this done again!

BenDover 02-26-08, 05:23 PM too bad someone can't create a franken-Q and combine the latest/greatest from the most recent 70 rear-pro sxrd sony with the optics of the Q...1080p24/60 input would sure be nice on such a monstrous set :(

congrats on your "new" Q ...
someone keeps a very dust-free house...either that or there are rarely any humans there since i think 80% of dust is human skin...

Surprisingly not true... and we have a Pomeranian around. Tech said he rarely finds much dust in them, as they are sealed so well from the outside elements. YMMV.
Now I can finally get UMR here to calibrate IF we can make our schedules work!

bernster2001 02-26-08, 08:29 PM Just met with UMR to calibrate my Pioneer plasma 110fd. He did a great job. If Pioneer ever comes out with a 70", it certainly will qualify as an upgrade to the Q006.
Jeff did discuss with me the problems many of us are encountering with the Q006 which involve degradation of the light engine resulting in poor performance in low lit scenes, green or yellow splotches, or other issues. He indicated that a Sony tech said that the problem with light engine degradation was caused by clogged or dirty multiple fans (as many as 4). I would like to get some ideas about cleaning them from the group.
This is a very important issue. Many of us spent as much as $13,500 for this set which is no longer manufactured. It would be nice to keep the pq as excellent as possible for as long as possible before we upgrade to the next best thing.
We know that Sony is reluctant to help. Witness the problems that jb007 has had to get his set up to par. Gee Sony, jb was your number 1 purchaser and participated in a Qualia promotion, nice way to treat him. As we enter the realm of extended warranties, please note that Jeff indicated that he believes all Q006's will fail from this problem.
How can we protect ourselves?? My humble opinion is that these fans must be cleaned on an annual basis. Jeff believes that this can only be done by a tech. What say ye all?
divedude 02-26-08, 08:52 PM My green tint was not in the form of blotches. My entire screen was tinted green. The other SXRD's (50" and 60") did have problems with blotches, so I am wondering if all SXRD Optical Block problems are being lumped together by the tech.
From what I saw the fans were not clogged. I would think that if a fan were clogged, the unit would overheat and shutdown.
If clogged fans are a concern, you could sure hire a Sony Tech to come out and clean things inside every year or so. I am thinking the Sony extended warranty would be a better overall deal and maybe less expensive.

Hey Bernster, Jeff had just finished up my Q on Saturday before he was on his way to your house Sunday. I am a victim of a deteriorating light engine. In Aug of 06, Jeff calibrated my Q that had just received a new light engine. He said then, that it was the best he had seen!. Well now it's only 18 months later and my Q had been reduced to "barely acceptable" (in the low end) as Jeff put it. What was once almost a perfect grayscale, is now a near mess. It's mainly the blue bias that was way,way of the charts too high while the green and red were to low. I was shocked at this! It happened so gradually that I didn't noticed how much my image turned bluish. After calibration, the blue was still too high while the green and red were low. Nothing further could be done ! So now I have to live with an emphasis on blues in the low end (which I despise) or get a new light engine.I told Jeff that there is no way that a tech is going to look at the set and say ,"hmm, your set is leaning towards blue in the bottom end and thus we need to replace your light engine." Just not gonna happen. Most off these techs need to see big, huge obvious problems before they recommend a new light engine. Jeff agreed. So that puts me in an ugly position right now.I can live with this set for now I guess. The high end still looks great while the low end is marginal. What else at 70" is out there? I can't think of one. Anyway, that's my not so good news regarding my beloved Q.
How can we protect ourselves??[/B] My humble opinion is that these fans must be cleaned on an annual basis. Jeff believes that this can only be done by a tech. What say ye all?
I do not believe that in my case this has nothing to do with the fans. I have seen 2 Qualias disassembled after running for several years and the fans looked rather clean. I was even running my set on reduced power mode for the 18 months between calibration hoping that by running cooler, perhaps the light engine would last longer. That obviously didn't help. No, I believe it's simply the nature of Lcos for this to happen over time.Perhaps Intel knew best when they abandoned this technology a few years back.
If Sony KNOWS that there is an issue with every "light engine" in the Q and they will all fail, can't they at least agree to replace it when it goes regardless of the age of the Q?
I mean, I have light use on our Q, and if, in many years it does go...what do I do, just throw it out? Somehow this just does not seem right.
I am waiting for the BluRay version of DVE March 25 to check mine out again. As some of you know, I am not getting very dark Blacks and if I am in Vivid, I get moire patterns during slow pans.

In theory, if Sony *knows* (something they will deny) there is an issue with every light engine, they should replace it. However, everything fails sooner or later. When the engine eventually goes on your car, the manufacturer is not required to replace it (once it is out of warranty). In other words, Sony has only warrantied the Q006 for three years (unless you purchase an extended warranty). :(

Very sad to hear that after you got all of your problems resolved, the light engine is pooping out again. How many hours per day or week do you use it?

I do not think this is the same. A car engine has an average failure rate (MTBF) Some longer and some shorter...the M in MTBF. However, IF a car Mfgr KNEW a part would only last 15, 000 miles, and then cause the whole engine to fail, I think that is different. We all expect "stuff" to fail after a period of time...but not one specific part. And once knowledge is gained that one part is failing all the time, it is resolved. At least that is what we tried to do in the Computer business.

Here's what I've learned over the past few years (apologies in advance for the hyperbole)...
1. Never buy a Bentley disguised as a VW (in this case a VW Phaeton); though it's a fantastic car you still have to deal with the Seven Circles of Hell -- a.k.a. the VW dealer service department...
2. There is a good reason Toyota and Nissan set up completely different distribution and service networks when they wanted to come out with higher end vehicles like Lexus and Infiniti (see above)...
3. I thought I'd be O.K. buying a Qualia, but it seems Sony has gone the way of VW and abandoned its' equally half-assed attempt at the high end -- along with any pretense of trying to respect it's early-adopter Qualia customers. Bad choice, IMHO, as I am one of those guys whose advice family and friends seek out before buying anything tech...
4. In the auto industry there is something called an "unwritten warranty". This occurs when a company has a known product defect, but prefers that it not become public knowledge. It's easier and cheaper for them to fix vehicles where the problem crops up -- or where the owner creates a fuss -- than it is to get into a recall situation. I've had this kick in on a couple of vehicles, and received (in one case) an entirely new transmission out of the deal. This was long after the warranty had expired...
5. Unless one of you guys is a lawyer willing to make a lot of class-action squeaking on a pro-bono basis, I believe we are screwed...
6. I hope and pray my light-engine survives another year or two. I wouldn't feel quite so lousy about having to replace it at that point in time, as my CPA/wife would be far more jiggy with the depreciation/amortization schedules just a tad further down the long and winding road that is Qualia ownership...
7. I still love my Qualia -- until I start having some of these problems, at which point I will throw a major, ugly, hissy-fit and permanently remove my Q006 webpage from it's online existence...
This would appear to explain -- at least partially -- why Sony is abandoning the consumer SXRD/RPTV market. Has anyone heard any repercussions from this flaw occurring in their front-projection or Pro products?
Just added link to this current thread topic on my Q006 home page...

I am averaging 2600 hrs a yr in REDUCED power mode.
I agree and I had a Lexus. The dealer and service department could not do enough for me.

just think of those poor qualia 004 owners...just today i was on ebay curious what the 006 might be going for and i saw a number of BRAND NEW 004's for around $15K

ManWithAPlan 02-27-08, 07:54 PM Aright, I'll get over it guys, but I just had to chime in with some positive vibes here. I have a dirty little secret...
I LOVE MY QUALIA AND THE PICTURE IS STILL PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!
ok, there, I said it...the UMR calibrated Q, with the bulb I just replaced, is still the best damn picture out there in a rear projection set...I go to the Sony Style store all the time in Boston here, and they have NOTHING that compares to the stunning quality of the Q...over at other stores, the Pioneer's are nice, but not big enough, and not as stunning. The German Loewe's are nice and all, but not as good, and even higher priced than the Q's were.
Now, I may be fiddling while Rome burns, I might be lucky and all that, and I do feel bad for all those that have had problems with light engines, but dammit, this thing is one of the most amazing pieces of tech equipment of any kind I have ever seen or experienced. I just bought a brand new Mac Pro 8-core computer with insane spec's and totally maxed out with capabilities...it is an amazing example of great engineering and product design...untouched by anything out there today, and probably for quite a while...but I would put the Qualia line in that same league, maybe higher...it is an absolutely stunning example of great engineering, and something that will be talked about for years to come...shame on Sony for abandoning the line, but that matters not to my plans to enjoy this thing til the cows come home.
I plan on doing whatever it takes, extended warranties, new light engines, writing Sir Howard's supreme holiness himself, to make sure this thing lasts many many years and continues to deliver amazing quality home theater.
Just had to chime in with some positive feedback. By the way, if I see a Qualia 004 get down to sub-10K on ebay or videogon, I will pull the trigger on that too, and put it in our future home, and laugh like an insane clown for years to come :-) Maybe one day I'll open an antique shop, and sell ye olde Qualia line from good ole Sony Pictures...I can see it now, the cranky old man in the corner, laughing hysterically at something only he can appreciate...
Cheers,
Brian
Brian:
I, too, still feel that the Q has the best picture. The point was that I feel like it better last as Sony seems to have stopped supporting it. They gave us so much help early on and then said "never mind". I am not alone. Ask the dealers who signed on and were told this would be an item that would sell for 10K and then went up to 13K when it was released. They were told they would get Sony support and have few dealers in their area and they would all sell for list price! That lasted for only a few months!
I used to buy highend audio and used to go to NYC and Boston to get it when I lived in Hartford. Things sure have changed.

Brian,
That's great and I totally agree about the picture being perfect (in my case with a new OB).
Congrats on the new Mac Pro. I have been extremely happy with my 24" 2.8 iMac until a few day ago. Either the power supply or the on/off switch has gone out. It will not turn on, so I am going to have to take it in for repair.

Ahh crap, sorry to hear that. The iMac's are absolutely beautiful machines, they totally nailed it with those as well. Well, Apple should take care of you I would think..they seem very good that way. I'm sure a day will come when both my Q and my Mac find a way to disappoint me, so I don't take this time for granted, but I am definitely enjoying high tech heaven right now.
Let me know how the repair works out for the Mac - again, I can't imagine they wouldn't take care of that for you. I really like the Apple stores, they seem serious about training and helping people with all kinds of stuff. I hate to be old-fashioned, but it reminds me of the old time shops in the midwest when I was a kid, where they were passionate about their products and actually took a vested interest in their customers' product education and happiness. This is the way high end audio/video used to be, before "box pushing" became a religion.
But I digress....
-Brian
divedude 02-27-08, 10:04 PM I have the extended service plan so I know it will be fixed. And you are right that they do have a passion for their product. My only concern is that they have to take off the glass and I understand it is extremely difficult to keep dust particles from getting between the glass and the screen.
My wife and I were in the South Bay Area when Apple first got going. In fact we still have our Apple ][+ with a cp/m card by a rather unknown company called Microsoft. Gee, I wonder whatever happened to them. My wife was the accounting Mgr. for an Apple Magazine then. We even have the magazines here! She just found a Lisa Pin and a IIe pin. I looked, and one went on ebay for $25 the other day.
It is sure getting hard to buy good stuff any more!

That's it. Usually old B&W movies. Unless Ted colorized them
hifi,
Sorry for your problem :( Does it look bluish on old B&W movies? Just wondering because that is where I started seeing the green.
No, actually it looks decent with a b/w movie. It gradually turned bluish before I contacted Jeff to recalibrate. He did a fine job, as the blue from 50 ire down was thru the roof and not even close to tracking properly. He took the blue bias way down in the svc menu. There is no more room for adjustment should this happen again. He said he has been seeing this alot.So much so that he will probably stop calibrating Qualias. Another negative was that my contrast ratio went from almost 2000:1 to 600:1 ! My light output went from 42 fl to 25 ! Not too good, and this was with a lamp with barely 400 hours on it. I'm still mostly satisfied with my Qualia but I can't stand watching it die a slow death before my eyes. The biggest negative effect that I notice from all this is that shadow detail isn't quite what it once was. I still think it's the best out there except for the Pioneers and the 70" XBR 2 .

So sorry BenDover. Does it help if I told you that every flat panel lcd I have laid eyes on, also have bluish blacks? Look at a good b/w movie for a while. It should have no blue tinge at all. Try lowering you blue bias a few notches and see if it helps(if not psychological:)

If you are still under warranty it would be worth a call to the Qualia Support line. If UMR can furnish you with his findings, I would think you would have a case to get a new OB.

thesirjay 02-28-08, 08:05 PM Anyone receive their direct from Sony warranty in the mail yet? I purchased mine back on the 15th was expecting to get the warranty by now. Of course having to call Jessica back up is hardly a horrible chore but if they are taking awhile for everyone no sense pestering her yet.
divedude 02-28-08, 08:16 PM Not me. It seems like they said it would take 5 or 6 weeks. I wrote down my contract number, so I guess I would be covered after March 4.

Jesse is still on my Netflix long wait list, but I may scratch it.
Has anyone else watched Run Lola Run Blu-ray? I really like the movie, so much so that I preordered from Amazon. The Blu-ray version would look great if it weren't for the video sequences that were shot 10 years ago on standard video. The film portions of Lola and her boyfriend that she is trying to save is shot on 35mm and look great. I think it is a very interesting film with all the symbolism. I like to watch it in German with the English subtitles.
thestewman 03-01-08, 12:06 PM I sold my Pioneer Elite DV09 thinking I could improve my SD DVD viewing with an upscaling DVD player. I found and purchased a new Toshiba HD-A35 based on reviews that it was the best SD DVD player even besting the upscaling OPPO by a small margin.
My results have been very disappointing. The Pioneer DV09 via component at 480i was much better at SD DVD. Any body have any experience with the Toshiba and SD DVD ?
The picture appears softer and noisier and grainy.
I am outputting 1080i from the Toshiba via HDMI to an Anthem D2 and then 1080i to the Qualia via HDMI.
If I cannot improve the SD DVD picture I am considering returning the Toshiba and trying an OPPO or getting a Pioneer DV59i.

Why on earth send 1080i from the DVD player for standard DVD when you have the D2??? I have no experience with this player, but I use a Pio 79avi (very similar to the 59avi that you mention) and have had really nice performance by sending 480i over HDMI to the D2, and letting the D2 scale to 1080i for delivery to the Qualia 006. Another really nice choice would be the Marantz DV-9600, which got top ratings for 480i over HDMI perfection from the Secrets testing that was done. Added benefit there is it also has great SACD performance, and even very decent CD performance, if that matters to you. The Marantz is being discounted hugely right now. Normally 2000 bucks, its selling for 1300 over here:
www.musicdirect.com
Or go the Oppo route that you mention, if you want something cheaper and still really nice with the D2 for 480i over HDMI.
My 2 cents,
Brian
I bought the A-35 for use with HD material (before Toshiba dropped out, unfortunately). It's performance on upscaling SD DVD's is inferior, both to my eye and to magazine reviews I have read.
thestewman 03-01-08, 06:47 PM By the way, if I see a Qualia 004 get down to sub-10K on ebay or videogon, I will pull the trigger on that too,

When I send 480i to the D2 from the Toshiba HD-A35 and out as 1080i from the D2 it shows up as a video picture about 24 inches square on the 006.

Stew,
24" would be like PIP on the Q. I am surprised to hear the A35 doesn't do such a good job on SD. When I first got the Panny BD10 I was not happy with the SD. Then I got the Toshiba A2 and it was much better. I just got the BD30 and it is not as good as the BD10.
It almost seems like the manufactures are concentrating on improving the HD and letting the SD go. It is too bad you sold your old SD player before you had a chance to compare it to the A35.
divedude 03-01-08, 10:23 PM So now I am officially at 7.3. I got a case of BenDover Fever ;) and bought a dual 12" Bob Carvor's Signature Edition Sunfire True Subwoofer. It matches up good with my 12" Intermezio's. They all have built in parametric equalizers which go a long ways to match things up with the room. So with 2,700 watts to go with the Intermezio's 2,600 watts a piece puts my WOOFER power up to 7,900 watts. :D
I'll be checking it out with 30 Days of Night a little latter.

thesirjay 03-02-08, 12:02 PM Breakthrough!
Thanks to a quirk of early HDMI dual output switching, as found in my Gefen 6 x 2 HDMI Switcher, I can now send 1920 x 1080P @ 24 Hz directly from the various HD sources such as HD-DVD & BluRay Discs to a non HDCP compliant monitor or projector!
I doubt this is suddenly going to impact us (if the 1080i vs p even would impact us). This is the same old issue of some tvs/monitors lacking hdcp and since Sony put hdcp in our Qs this buys us nothing other than "cheating" the protection by not requiring the switch to handshake with the tv (but since ours is happy to shake hands not really a bonus). The 1080p world is still in a land far far away I fear (and I would be a bit shocked if that land suddenly appeared this late in the game). Although I will admit for the 1080P source material it would be nice to not have our player interlace it (even if it is lossless).
I hear the Toshiba XA2 is excellent for upscaling the standard dvds.

I heard that, too.
thesirjay 03-02-08, 04:22 PM Uh oh it appear I may be calling in service on the Q. I am getting vertical lines (not heavy but visible) They are light light brown. I am seeing them on the "Input 6" "Input 7" grey boxes so obviously it has nothing to do with source material. It also appears like it may be a bit uneven in total light (the center brighter and corners darker) but that is mostly only visible when I have no input. Ugh definitely not the way I wanted to ring in the new warranty. At least I have a month left on the original warranty. These appeared after the bulb blew (I believe I noticed them when using my spare original bulb but because it was so much dimmer I figured just a side effect of an almost dead bulb). Unfortunately since I am seeing these with the new bulb it appears game over. I will try a third cleaning of the glass plate but thats about the only option I have since I really don't suspect it has anything to do with the new bulb. Any advice?
thesirjay 03-02-08, 04:55 PM Update the 3rd cleaning seems to have made a visible difference so perhaps it was merely discoloration associated with the bulb blowing. Unfortunately since it not entirely gone that seems to mean I will need to get a pretty darn thorough cleaning on that glass plate. Any suggestions? I have been using paper lens cleaning cloths with a bit of extra lense cleaner. It is pretty hard to work on it though since the surrounding surface seems to attract dirt and if I don't want to nudge the sides then run that dirt over the rest. I will go through the tulsa advice a bit more carefully and hopefully that will do it but if anyone has found a better way glad to hear it.

This is what I use. Purosol (http://www.purosol.com/optical.cfm) Their Optical and Plasma products and the large microcloth.
Someone else on the forum suggested it a while back and it works great.
I use the Optical spray for the mirror and the Plasma Spray to clean the screen.
You can spray on the Optical with any kind of soft material to clean the housing around the mirror first. Then finish cleaning with Optical and their microcloth on the mirror. Using circular motions of the cloth the mirror comes out spotless without any streaking.
thestewman 03-03-08, 10:04 AM Yesterday, (Drum Roll Please)
I replaced my FIRST bulb.
It was finally time. We watch in subdued lighting and I had to agree it was it was getting too dim.
The timer showed 6589 hours before I reset it. That was 8 days short of almost exactly three years since I first turned the 006 on.
I admit changing the bulb made quite a difference.
I also cleaned inside the lamp housing and the mirror with the product mentioned above, Purosol.
Since there is a consensus of opinion that heat is a problem with the OB failures, this time I took the plastic panel
off in the rear that covers the cooling fan and cleaned the fan blades and the housing as it was showing a lot of dust.

damn, that is more than 3x what i managed on *any* of my bulbs, original included!!!
it will be curious to see how many hours you get out of your replacement.
also, now that you have the replacement in, can you say whether you think that maybe you were watching the original bulb well beyond its useful life; i.e., were you possibly watching the original bulb with *greatly* reduced output and should have changed it much sooner?
that is what caused me to replace my original...it got soooo noticably dim that I couldn't bear it any longer...this last replacement was forced on me by an exploding lamp :)

Yes, I should probably have changed it sooner. If our video watching was not being done in a subdued light situation I would have done it sooner. The loss of bulb intensity would have been more noticeable. Even up to yesterday the picture was very viewable. The lack of bulb intensity was more like watching a front projector screen. It did not have that 006 snap.
I purchased my 006 back in 11/05 and just replaced my lamp for the first time. The lamp only had 619 hours of use. Most of the hours were viewed using Vivid mode. I recently switched to Pro mode. The picture still looked pretty good with the original lamp but the "wow" factor was gone, and no amount of adjustment could bring it back. I watched "Wild Things" last night with the new lamp and the "wow" factor is definitely back!
I spoke with Sony today and they are sending me a free lamp. They are quoting expected lamp life between 1400 hours & 2000 hours which I consider terrible.
I vacuumed out what little dust there was in the lamp compartment. The lens that the lamp shines on, which I believe is part of the light engine, appears to have a light film of dirt on it. I know that some here have been cleaning this lens with lens cleaner but I am very leary of doing this without first discussing it with a knowledgable service representative. I'm worried about removing a lens coating (anti-glare, etc.) in the process. Has anyone discussed this lens cleaning procedure with a Sony service representative? I was going to ask the Sony representative I spoke with today but decided against it when she refused to even tell me how to check lamp hours.

There is no indication that there is any coating on the lens. Qualia owners have been cleaning the lens with various good quality lens cleaning products and cleaning cloths since 2006 without any negative results. Several have had the lens cleaned by the service tech when the Optical Block was being replaced. You can find the Sony factory directions for checking and resetting the lamp hours on the first page of this forum.
You may also want to clean the cooling fan and the intake cover on the right rear of the 006.

I use a quality lens cleaning solution that is made for coated lenses. That end of it is really only a protective glass. The lens is on the other end and you can't get to it.

WOW, someone using the Vivid mode! I thought I was the only one!
I love the WOW factor on Vivid and both my wife and I love Vivid. I did notice moire patterns in the background if there is a slow pan in a movie and changed to Pro mode. They all went away, but I just do not get the Black levels I get in pro as I do in vivid! Since I know that almost everyone uses Pro mode, I wonder if you notice a change in black level when you do not use Vivid mode? I would love to keep it in Pro, but want the Black levels I get in Vivid!
BenDover 03-04-08, 07:06 AM when you use a cleaning solution on the protective glass, are you worried about any left over residue/film that can have negative consequences when exposed to the high heat output of the UHD lens?
mpsan,
I seem to prefer Vivid on both of my Sony sets. I also have a XBR950 that we use for general viewing. I still use Vivid mode on the XBR950. I starting using Pro mode on the 006 just recently when I calibrated the set using a Spyder. Now that I replaced the lamp I need to recalibrate the 006.
I'm not sure if Vivid provides a better black level but it does add a certain "pop" to the picture.
BenDover,
Doing anything to the light engine lens concerns me especially when you can't really see what you are doing. But I will still probably clean it at some point.
Your point about high lamp heat output on leftover residue is also a concern.

while i have in both instances of replacing my lamp noticed a strange "residue/film" with a pattern which was identical to what i see when the Q is warming up (that is when i see my green blob), i have refrained from wiping the lens for fear of screwing something up :) just like when i see some tiny little speck on an optical disc and i try to remove it, i end creating marks on the disc that displease me more than the damned initial speck!!! truly one of the nicest aspects of bd media for me ...

BenDover 03-04-08, 06:48 PM Cool, do you use a sub with it?
Of course :)
But nothing special, my first sub i ever picked up (a sony 12"; enough boom for that room considering it is the den which is adjacent the kitchen and dining room and i have a very "open" floor plan so that low frequency stuff tends to migrate throughout the first floor :)) ... before i got bitten by the a/v bug ... or i guess that *was* when i got bitten ... first dvd player, avr, sub and surround-sound speakers.

As I said, I would not mind keeping it at Pro if I could find the setting that Vivid uses to give me the Blacks I like. If anything, my Pic seems bright on pro or vivid!
Perhaps the moire I see in Vivid is due to the sharpness setting. I will have to play with that.

If you have the time could you post your Pro settings and I will compare with mine. But I don't know how valid the comparison would be, since there could be differences between Optical Blocks and bulb brightness. I would be happy to do it. Are your settings different from input to input?

Thanks, DD. I have them written in a spreadsheet and did compare mine with some of the ones in the first post. As I said when I got the BD30 I had an issue with flashing on one BR DVD and it was gone when I switched to Pro. I can only think that the Vivid mode has the sharpness too high. I do have different settings per input but seem to have the same issues with Cable and HDMI Blu Ray.
Will give settings in a post...I hope tomorrow.

thestewman 03-05-08, 12:20 PM Well now I have cleaned the lens and housing and replaced my first bulb.
I admit the picture is much brighter and has a lot of snap to it.
I have found the following negative items after the bulb change and wonder if anyone else noticed the same effects.
There is a lack of sharpness almost like a moire on everything I watch. It is like you are watching HD but without 1080 resolution. I did try feeding my cable signal directly to the 006 without my D2 processor and it made no difference. The lack of HD clarity is missing on every signal source.
Dark scenes seem to exhibit what I call video noise. There is blooming in some areas of the picture in brightly lit scenes or with white articles or sunlight.
Any comments or ideas what has happened?
C-Dub006 03-05-08, 12:38 PM I heard that, too.

It is, in my humble opinion, the best up converting SD-DVD. I also have the oppo, Denon 3910 and the XA2 I feel, is the best of the bunch. I feed it to a Denon 3808ci and then to the Q. Great picture.

I'm not as advanced as all of you so pardon my ignorance about this set.
Not sure if it is under warranty, probably not, but it will not turn on. The lamp light is not lit on the front. when powered up the standby light flashes green regularly but not in a pattern as described in the service guide. just a regular flash. You can hear the fans turning also.
can anyone give me a number to call in the NYC area for in home service? It would be a huge help to me. Then I can try some of those cool settings you have posted!

just call the general sony qualia number popsted in the first link.
as for your issue, it is more than likely that you need to replace your lamp.
The "wow" you see in vivid mode is nothing more than crushed blacks. This gives the illusion of superior blacks and contrast. The downside of using vivid far outweighs the negatives of using pro mode. In vivid mode, say goodbye to shadow detail. It's gone. Say hello to every artificial enhancement the set has to offer. Not good. None of this helps the Qualia " be all it can be." Only pro mode will do this for you. All so called enhancements are turned off as they should be. The set goes into warm mode as it should be. If you want better black levels, turn on the cinema black mode (only available in pro mode) and set the tv to reduced power mode (this is the only mode that will extend the life of your bulb due to reduced voltage sent to the bulb). You will lose some light output overall, but you black level will increase. Putting advanced mode "gamma" from off to low also helps as most Qualias should be set to low anyway..After viewing your set like this for several weeks or so,it will be hard to go back to vivid mode. You will notice how noisy and artificial the image looks while in vivid in comparison to pro. Don't confuse vivid mode noise with true detail. They are not the same. These are some of the reasons a calibrator sets your tv up this way as the start point for his calibration. Appreciating pro mode takes time, like a fine wine. Go to the theater once a month or so to calibrate your eyes (colors, shadow detail, warmth and the absence of noise)and see what your set should look like. As a videophile, this is the overall objective of having a home theater in the first place.

:eek:After seeing all the various problems people were having, it seems like many need eye exams :D
Thank you everyone. OH I did an edit of my settings as I had my listing switched between Pro and Vivid. So my setting order is Std Vivid Pro.
My settings show my BR DVD input on my Q and is Input 6...HDMI from the BD30.
HiFi59 I can also try what you said. In fact Power save may be what I want as I have always said if anything the pic is too bright! This is still a great set/pic but I feel I do not have it set right. I am going to get the new DVE for BR that will be out March 25th!
No one said anything about items like sharpness and brightness. I guess they have to be out a lot in order to matter.

Yeah...I don't mind people who have an issue burning the Cd but when it has been posted only a few messages up that is just lazy!

My sharpness = 25 and brightness = 31.
My sharpness = 25 and brightness = 31.
OK, will try again when we go to watch a DVD. I hate to turn on the Q just to do that.
rmw2007 03-06-08, 09:52 PM hi guys
Just replaced my 4th lamp, 2100 hrs, very dusty, small screen on lamp housing was clogged, which I believe caused the failure. Cleaned the glass, which was tricky, with photo lens cloth and it was filthy, picture now back to "stunning" ,... bright with lots of detail. fyi lamps died at 2400, 400, 1800 and 2100. still no signs of the evil yellow or green tints.

Thanks for the reminder - I still have to go in and do the "major cleaning" on my glass plate (when my last bulb blew it seems to have left a good deal of residue).
This reminds me of the fun I had going through different settings when the Q newly arrived. Anyone care to share their pro setups (that haven't already been posted). I noticed each one had a bit different look it was a bit like using a different tv (I would usually leave them up for a week or so to get a feel for them). I know the perfect settings vary based on ambient light etc but it is fun to try out different looks and see the pros and cons or just the difference. It sounds like many of you are using noise reduction. I have had mine turned off (even though I know the standard definition could use improvement). Heck even the high definition from comcast could probably use some improved definition. But I don't tend to like to worry about turning it off for my bluray, hd-dvd, and computer sessions (although computer is on input 7 so thats not a worry).
I had been a longtime advocate of powersave mode but (perhaps because of the glass fogging) after this latest bulb I seem to lose detail without full bulb power. I will have to play around a bit more once I get a "reference quality" picture as I love nice deep blacks but I am not willing to give up detail (especially in all of the dark scenes). Also I have to turn off the powersave mode for computer use - for some reason powersave with the computer causes a noticeable flicker and a bit of uneven brightness - this isn't present with other sources (even if I leave them frozen on a white screen for instance).
thesirjay 03-07-08, 09:23 AM FYI for those of you trying netflix out - I enjoy watching their watch instantly shows on the Q. The quality isn't dvd but it feels quite good (especially on the older shows). It is unlimited viewing (but hardly an unlimited catalog) and they are adding new movies and tv shows weekly it seems.
thestewman 03-07-08, 04:13 PM I know some of you have had a lot of experience setting up remotes to operate your entire Qualia 006 home theater system.
I am thinking if doing that after years of multiple remotes sitting on the coffee table. Would care to you share your experiences and first hand knowledge ?
Please tell me what remote or control you are using and most importantly how you addressed turning the Q power On and Off. The current remote toggles the power on and off which doesn't work well with macros.
Is there a set of discrete on and off and video input codes you can use with different remotes or controls instead of the toggle codes on the current Q remote ?

I use the Harmony 880, works well, easy to setup, but only after a few months of using it, it would not sit properly on it's cradle to charge, I would need to play with it until it does make contact. Not buying Harmony anymore!

Stew, discrete on and off my friend...piece of cake, anyone of a ton of remotes will do that for you. I use MX-900's from Universal Remote, they make many form factors, all of which work real nice. I had them programmed by a tech to control everything in all 3 audio/video zones independently. So I have 3 of them, one for each area of the house. They also of course control the beloved Qualia with many macros to make everything real easy...I essentially come home from work and say "Watch" "Cable" or "Watch" "BluRay" ,etc on the remote and it powers all the right things up, does exactly what it should do, and even takes me to my favorite channel auto-magically.
The MX-900 is nice because it will do RF and IR combined. The MRF-350 repeats the signal and turns RF into IR so that RF can be used to control things through walls.
Hope that helps,
Brian

Actually that was a big flaw in the 880 - if you contact logitech they will send you a new cradle for it. The newest versions of the 880 have a different cradle which works much better. I have the 880 and I picked up the new Harmony One which works better since it has the buttons backlit and with different shapes for easy usage. (although I am not in love with the touchscreen yet).
thesirjay 03-07-08, 06:17 PM FYI I bought the Nyko Bluwave remote for the PS3 - it is an infrared remote that plugs into a usb hub. With that I can use my Harmony to control the PS3! Very nice although doesn't have every feature it lets me control my movies well enough (it won't turn the PS3 on or off for instance). Well worth the 13.99 to finally be able to control the PS3 without a separate remote.

I have been using a Harmony 676 for a long time. It has the discrete power on and off signals so it is not a toggle.

I have the 676 so do not have that issue. I thought that they changed the stand on the 880 so that did not happen any more. Did you call Logitech?

A friend who has the same remote had the same issue. I was stupid and very busy and did not bother calling Logitech. At first it wasn't so bad, then it got worse, by that time it was out of warranty. Again, I was very stupid and dumb to not call right away.

I may just call Logitech and see what they can do for me on this issue. Sometimes it literally takes minutes just to get it to sit and charge, especially hard and frustrating when you are drunk!

Congrats on the new 9.8, I am sure you are enjoying it.
divedude 03-07-08, 08:25 PM I just bought a brand new Mac Pro 8-core computer with insane spec's and totally maxed out with capabilities...it is an amazing example of great engineering and product design...
Brian,
Which video card did you get with the new Mac Pro? ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT? I am asking because I am trading in my 5 month old Alu iMac for a new 8 core Mac Pro tomorrow. They offered me a full trade in :D
I don't plan to do gaming, only HD video editing with FCS2. From what I have read, the 8800 actually runs slower on professional apps, but is great for gaming.

Yeah, I actually put 2 of the 8800GT's in mine, to power my 3-monitor setup (its a productivity tool, really!)...I have read all the negativity on the 8800GT and all I can say is my experience has been phenomenal with these cards. Keep in mind that Apple almost always releases graphics cards with just a basic, non-optimized driver set, to get the device out the door and working effectively without problems. Then, a couple months later, they release improved drivers that optimize things further. I fully expect that will be the case this time as well, and you'll eventually see the power of this card completely released. In the meantime, it works like a champ, and I highly doubt you'd even see these performance "issues" with the card. I have only used the FC Express HD (not full FCS), but it doesn't skip a beat across 3 monitors. I'm sure you'd be happy with it, and it probably positions you best for the long haul.
That's my 2 cents anyway. Hope that helps,
Brian
thesirjay 03-08-08, 09:38 AM FYI from what I have heard Logitech is replacing the base for 880 owners who are out of warranty for free as well. They know they screwed up and this was a high prestige remote when it was released they are trying to make it right.

We have the Harmony 676. But, our favorite remotes are two of the $9 Radio Shack remotes we bought long ago with JP1 jacks. I built a cable and programmed them for all the equipment in our Den and BedRoom! Added macros to turn the stuff on and switch inputs on the TV's too. Still, the Harmony has the Online DB that is great for new equipment!

I ended up with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. They gave me an extremely good deal (almost paid me to trade), but I had to get one of the standard models the Apple Store keeps in stock. I didn't need the 8x3.2 and that would have cost me $2k. I got the 8x2.8. On the way home I stopped by Frys and picked a couple of SATA drives: a 500GB drive to back up the OS drive and a 1TB drive to capture video. I now have almost 5TB of storage on the Mac. Next, to order some more memory.

thesirjay 03-09-08, 01:49 PM Alas I am going to have to go the service route on my Qualia. After a determined attempt with lens cleaners and lens wipes I know that the problem is not going to be solvable by me. I have discoloration (I am guessing on the glass) that causes a brownish hue to be primarily in the center of the screen. You can see it in low light conditions primarily. If for instance you turn to an inactive input and hit menu the grey turns into a light brown as it gets near the center.
This seems to have occurred after my last bulb blew. I noticed a crater like pattern on the glass and wiped that off. Unfortunately while I was able to seemingly improve the picture I could not get the discoloration to subside completely.
I guess Monday will be Sony calling day (at least the Qualia number is still active but it simply says Sony so I think our days of hand holding are long gone). I still have a couple more weeks on my original warranty. I still haven't gotten the new one from Sony in the mail yet has anyone else?
I'm sorry to go so far off topic, but did anyone see last Sunday's 60 Minutes? They ran a segment on Remote Area Medical, a group that gives away health care in rural Appalachia. This cause is near and dear to my heart, as they are headquartered in my old hometown of Knoxville, TN. Please ignore this if it sounds too much like proselytizing, but this story puts the entire health care debate in a whole new light. I've created a webpage and would appreciate it if concerned Qualians would take a look. If you feel you've benefitted from my Qualia 006 page, please take a minute of your time and click through to the following page (and pass it on):

I did see that, Ray. I can not imagine what it would be like to stand out there all night only to be told that the person in front of you is the last to be seen. I am sure it is hard on the support people as well.
thesirjay 03-10-08, 08:11 PM Powerful - and a pretty harsh indictment on our way of doing things. 12 Billion dollars a month on just the Iraq war and yet people can't afford to get their teeth examined and of course CEOs in the health care industry making over 100 million dollars never helps.

Yes, I received mine about two weeks after I talked to Jessica. I asked her to fax me a copy the day I called and she took care of that as well.
manfredc 03-11-08, 12:45 PM Mine is 2000112, just got my OB replaced even set was 2 weeks out of warranty (very lucky)
FYI from what I have heard Logitech is replacing the base for 880 owners who are out of warranty for free as well. They know they screwed up and this was a high prestige remote when it was released they are trying to make it right.
This is good, the only problem is getting in touch with them! I called the support line and I am on hold like forever, so I go on the Warranty Line, they say to call the support line to confirm first that there is a problem, so I call the support line again and still waiting! I guess I will have to do this when I am off so I can wait for a few hours.

Can you describe the issue that caused the OB to be replaced ?
thesirjay 03-12-08, 02:54 PM Old Hands will remember me as the owner of one of the first shipments of the Q006 to the US: Ser #XXXXXXX20; and the unit reviewed and first callibrated by UMR.
Over the past month, the set has developed an increasingly yellow tone in the picture. Initially thinking it was the lamp, I replaced it yesterday (third lamp); with no improvement. I called Qualia, who referred me to the local service rep. He has just departed and says I need a new optical engine. He is getting Sony pre-authorization because of the expense, and will reschedule to install. Very impressed with the tech--immediately went into the service menu and did the diagnosis without need to refer to any manual. Company in Houston is "E-Tec". He said the company had just serviced another Q006--failed power supply. Tech said that some parts had to be sourced from Japan. My unit has been in service since April 2005 and gets about 2000 hours per year. I wonder if we are about to see a pattern of parts mortality at the three-year point. Glad I bought the GE extended warranty, which will pick up April of 2008.
It appears they are just throwing the towel in on this repair and simply ordering it any time discoloration is reported. They are planning the light engine replacement on mine (even though I suspect it may just be the glass). I told them this and they reassured me that even with it "black" they don't see any discoloration. Oh well I am not complaining they said they will be replacing that little piece of glass as part of the light engine replacement. He estimated 2 hours of work to do it but he has never seen the Qualia before (which is a shame of course). Just curious Ted since you mentioned the xxx20 serial number earlier is yours 10 or 20? (looking for a recount lol I want the oldest Q :) ). I hope they have whatever the underlying problem is fixed I want to keep the Q around for at least another 5 years (and the Sony warranty will only go 3 more).
thesirjay 03-12-08, 03:02 PM Tech did no more than he had to do. Never opened up the upper part of the case, so the mirror and fresnel lens was not accessible. From what I saw of the bottom part, and what I know about the optical path, just removing the upper back case would not expose the operating surfaces of the mirror or lens. I suspect that they would have to be disassembled and I further suspect that there would be a high probability of moving the alignment.
In three years, Sony may not be in the RP business. I think the key is parts availability. To that end, I think the lamp will start to be hard to get/ very expensive at some earlier point in time.
Thanks again Ted I am re-reading the post mortems so I know what to expect.
thesirjay 03-12-08, 08:07 PM My description - At first I noticed some discoloration happening seemingly around the edges. It was a lightish brown color. It particularly showed up on dark screens. For instance when I saw the Input 6 pop up it was discolored (and there was nothing on the screen). I tested it with an input that had no content and hit the menu. Discoloration all over the place. I tried cleaning the glass (as the glass had shown kind of an explosion shape after last bulb blew). I thought I saw some improvement (a darker line seemed to have gone) but the whole pattern seemed to have shifted. Now it seems to be getting darker with time and the picture more and more brown. I have pretty much given up hope that it was just the glass as of today. Luckily they were able to get in an ob within a week.
I have no idea what it will look like after the replacement but it appears to be getting worse (the warmup time also seems to be getting a chunk longer on the brand new lamp).
divedude 03-12-08, 08:21 PM the glass had shown kind of an explosion shape after last bulb blew

I'm sure you will be very happy with the new Optical Block :)

Mine was perfect after the replacement of the OB, but unfortunatly I'm getting bands of discoloration again :(
Now for my question :)
For the last week I have been getting a blinking power lamp (not the lamp indicator). I will be watching TV and it will just dissapear with the blinking power indicator (no pattern, just steady blinking). Just kind of random occurance. It does come back though. Just like someone turned off the TV and turned it back on. I checked the internal error codes and they were all 0 (no history of errors). I noticed now the brightness flickers sometimes (like the lamp is flickering). So I thinking it could be:
A) Lamp freaking out (lamp # 2 installed - have not put in #3 yet)
B) Lamp driver failing
C) Capacitors failing (it's about the right age if we are going to have that problem - I hope not)
Anyone have a similar issue? I'm going to put back in Lamp #1 tonight (it's dim, but still ok) to see if it's the Lamp (please be the Lamp). If anyone has ideas, or whatever :D chime in...
thesirjay 03-13-08, 08:20 AM Joe, not sure but it doesn't sound good. The only halfway crazy suggestion I have in addition to that is to check your on/off switch and your power cord. Both longshots but its possible the cord is loose/damaged or the button is partially depressed and a mere vibration causes it to toggle.
If you are close on your warranty date definitely get the call in on it though if the troubleshooting doesn't find it.

I will check those - thanks (I have been back there recently). I got the extended, so I have a couple more years (about 2 months on the OEM).

I was too quick, and erred. It is # 20, manufactured in Dec 2004 and placed in service on Apr 8, 2005. Mine was in the second batch of shipments and came from a dealer in Atlanta. As I recall, there was an initial batch of 10 that were airshipped into LA, and were held for a week, or so, while Sony "engineers" did something to the sets. The demo units at the two Qualia stores in LV and NYC came from this batch. I offered the opinion then that they were changing out the rear to put in the internal scaler. The Q's were first issued in Japan with an external scaler, which cost $1000, as I recall. The initial price of the Q was to be $10,000, according to Sony releases. I offered the opinion that Sony made it an internal scaler to try to justify the price increase to $13K. My guess was that the initial batch of 10 were held over to put in the internal scaler. The next batch of 10 were also air shipped. There was a gap before the remainder of the Q's started arriving, according to the posts on this forum; and I opine that these were the ocean freight ones. I really wish Sony had kept the external scaler, as it would have been easier to go to 1080p--but, given that Sony has abandoned this product line, it probably would never have happened.
I have the GE warranty, and my hope is that when the set fails again (I have no confidence that the new OB is any different from the original and Sony is using the cheapest route to get a reasonable time past the warranty) GE will want to replace the set and Sony will be offering a comparable size OLED unit. It appears to me that they are using their SXRD investment for FP units, as it is amortized and there is no viable alternative to lamp-based FP technology, now. We don't know if the color failures in our Q's are related to a deterioration in the SXRD chips, or the circuitry of the OB. If they are in the chips, we don't know if they were a bad manufacturing batch, or endemic to the SXRD technology. And we probably will never know unless there is some sort of class action suit with discovery. My set failed at the 2 1/2 year point. At that rate, the next failure will be in the extended GE warranty. Fingers crossed!
I received my Q on January 15, 2005 and bulb number 3 just went in and again WOW, just like new again! So far no other problems (knock on wood and fingers crossed).
Serial Number 200069

There may be more failures in the future with all the FP using SXRD technology. That may add considerable numbers and increase the possibility of a class action lawsuit.
thestewman 03-13-08, 02:03 PM I have # 519 and my set was put in service in April 2005. The picture now is occasionally starting to have a greenish tint to it that can not be corrected with the Hue control or the adjustments within my Anthem D2. It does not have any color splotches or discoloration on any color bar tests.
You cannot achieve a true black and white picture on black and white videos. There always is a tint to the entire picture. There also is a slight lack of resolution and sharpness in dark areas especially brown and grey show uneveness and movement within those brown or gray colored areas.
Still under Sony factory warranty and 5 years on extended warranty.
Reminds me of my experience with the Sony ProFeel CRT monitor.
It was a great component video monitor with a separate tuner. I believe Sony was the first to build separate tv components in 1982.
The Sony Profeel had a terrible problem with parts overheating and failing. The power supply components would literally cook them selves to death and repeatedly fail..

Sorry, I don't have that figure. I stopped checking after I installed the second bulb. Last time I saw it at about 1300 hours, maybe more, but that was like in 2006. I didn't really needed to change it but it was the Superbowl and I was hosting, so I wanted the best pciture possible. I know it is easy to check, but just too lazy. My picture started getting really dark and thats why I changed it, now it is freakin bright man! I think my son playing Xbox on it daily had to something to do with it, now it should last longer (hopefully) becuase my son can only play Xbox on the weekends.

Not that bad. So far it is only slightly green and it is not always that way. When there are strong contrasting colors sometimes it looks OK.
If it is a dark scene with subdued lighting it can be slightly green or slightly brown. It was never like this until I replaced the bulb.
Some scenes with strong sun light or white objects may cause blooming

That picture was from a B&W movie. It continued to progress and show up on color. Eventually I couldn't give it enough red hue. And mine started showing up after a bulb change also.

Lot's of cool home automation gear and very cool front projection systems...I was most impressed with the Runco/Stewart demo where they had a "front projection" system lighting up a screen from the rear...with all the lights in the room full on and even the flourescents burning, the image remained remarkable. there were other front projection systems using special screens that also were able to pull this trick off...the rear projection system would look great outdoors at dd's sprawling ranch in TX :)

The recent outing of the “patent troll tracker” blogger as Rick Frenkel, Cisco Systems Inc.’s director of intellectual property, has raised concerns from lawyers representing “patent trolls” that Frenkel used his anonymity to make illegally disparaging remarks against his company’s enemies. As affected companies fight back against Frenkel, the blogging community debates its future.

Well, I'm thinking it is the Lamp. I checked and I have over 3000 hours on lamp #2 (gee is that a lot? :) ). So I put lamp #1 back in yesterday and there were no issues (though it has gone that long before). So I think I will reset the Lamp timer and put the new lamp in and see how it goes (but it does seem likely that it's the Lamp). So I guess one should always keep a spare Lamp on hand, and check the hours once in awhile...

Interesting that he told me that replacing the OB is common among all the SXRD models.
Would anyone who has had the experience of having the OB replaced comment on whether the unit needs to have ISF recalibration ?

Thoughts about this n that . . .
I received two new base charging stations from Harmony for my 880 remotes. Don't notice much of a difference visually, the new ones only have two charging contacts, omitting the third (center) one. Not sure they work any better or worse than the original ones. Time will tell.
I had my optical block replaced a couple of months ago. I can't wait to have the "new" Q006 ISF calibrated! umr will be here next week :)
Just returned from a week in Beijing (my first trip there). Amazing experience. Visited several electronics superstores. Digital cameras, iPods and computers were plentiful, but didn't see a QUALIA, so in some ways it is very much like the U.S. :D

You are correct. Each day the Qualia screen has a more predominate green tint.
The TV repairman man was here Wednesday, one day after I called them. It took less than 5 minutes for him to concur that the OB was going bad. He left my residence telling me he would order the new OB and they would call when it was in stock. They called this morning to report the part was in and would I like to have it installed Saturday morning. INCREDIBLE service.
I am a bit optimistic so my response to the person on the telephone was, "can we double check we have the correct part "? I said,"the OB costs $5000.00".
His response was, " no OB cost that much this one is only $1000.00". I asked him to double check the part. When he came back on the telephone he said, "you know the customer is always right, this one is $5000.00".
Now I know they have the correct part and they will be here tomorrow to install it. I will update on how the replacement goes.

It will be good to hear how much calibration the new OB requires. My install should be coming up soon it seems the deterioration is getting worse here as well (I have the brown creep) in fact it probably is impacting the whole screen but is at least a bit subtle since pure white areas aren't as affected (darker areas are worse).
Sounds like Harmony at least came through on the bases right - did they ask about warranty? So that should mean that everyone having such a problem can hopefully get new ones. I wonder with the older 880s if the fact that the contacts usually get worn down trying to get the remote to "fit" in those horrid old cases will cause any issues with the new cradle. I found a new 880 charged very nicely in the new cradle but as my old 880 had died I didn't test that (but I did notice all the contacts were worn).

I have never heard this on my setup and I listen to Blu-ray at -5. I watch 2 Blu-ray's a week, split between the three loseless formats. I have read all of the BD30 threads and the one you note above. Of the movies mentioned in the thread, I have only watched Close Encounters and FF.
I have also not heard any of the audio dropouts widely reported by a few with the BD30. I don't know what the deal is. I have not seen either problem reported on the Pio 94 thread. It appears most of the reports of dropouts are from folks with Onkyo receivers.

Well, it only happens on a few Movies. There was a great summary of the issue. It seems that there were some chipsets that had this problem and the receiver, pre/pro components were fixed with new DTS chips. However, they also started "fixing" some of the BR and HD releases. Yes, this is not just a BluRay problem. So, if you have the new DTS chips in your equipment all is good (Denon?). IF the movie has the "new" encoding, all is OK. The issue seems to be if you have an older Movie AND the "bad" chipset, you get a noise that others describe as a Gunshot going off!
I think I will just go back to listening to the radio as soon as the AM-FM format war is over! :D

And they both still have their problems . . .
The FM signal drops out or gets captured after you get so many miles from the transmitter. And then there's all those pesky pops and crackles on AM, especially during a lightening storm.

divedude 03-23-08, 09:26 PM Ok, so this may be a little OT but most of us have a lot of $$$$ in our audio systems. In fact I would guess much more that the cost of the Q.
Have you looked at this WARNING thread re: DTS MA Audio?
WARNING about DTS MA (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1008620)
It seems that the only people who do not hear this "GunShoot" going off are those with Denon's. Onkyo/Integra as well as Yamaha and Pio Elite all have this issue. It also seems to be at near full volume even if the audio is turned down!
DD and Ben have you seen this?
Here is an update on the problem from the Warning thread:
DTS global Product manager Ronny Katz gave the information opposite Concorde that the problem is caused by an incorrect DTS decoder IC in the Receivern/Verstaerkern of the companies Onkyo and Yamaha. Devices of Denon, Pioneer and Sony, which block all three another type of IC, would have shown no difficulties when playing the DTS Hp master audio traces concerned.

Good news, I think. So it is a shame that we have to choose the equipment with the least amount of issues. How about no issues! :-)

OH, I just ordered DVE: HD Basics on Blu. I am anxious to see what it does with the Q. I did turn Power Save on and it helped a lot!
thesirjay 03-24-08, 02:14 PM Life is not being kind to my poor Q - it is currently dead. They tried to get a new OB in but had a number of problems - in the end they got blue and red dots. It was a big enough pain that they are not putting in the original again but are getting in a new OB to try. Life without the Q - its just not the same. At least I haven't heard any tales of Sony giving up on Q's so that should mean they will keep on until they get it right.
Anyone else had a bit of moisture/discoloration in between the screens? I have had mine for awhile and it seems like it may have grown a bit (its down near the bottom not really impacting the visible area). Its smaller around the size of a playing card on the lower edge where it turns from black under the glass to clear (its not at the edge though its about a foot in). It looks like a different hue.
I don't want to think of anymore surgery on the Q so hopefully it will just go away by itself - it certainly hasn't been growing fast if it is growing at all.

WOW, that is bad news. Did the repair guy seem to know what he was doing? I am just wondering if he left some wire(s) loose.
Do you have any pictures of the moisture? I would be concerned about them taking the front glass off for fear of getting dust in between the glass and the screen. That was one of my concerns with Apple working on the iMac.
thestewman 03-24-08, 10:45 PM I have # 519 and my set was put in service in April 2005.
The TV technician has just left my residence. It took less than 5 minutes for him to determine that my 006 has the failing OB syndrome. It has just started to fail. Of course there will be a short wait while they order a new OB.
Interesting that he told me that replacing the OB is common among all the SXRD models.
Would anyone who has had the experience of having the OB replaced comment on whether the unit needs to have ISF recalibration ?
I have a perfect Q again. It is amazing how slowly the picture deteriorates and you don't notice and get used to it.
This repair was not without some minor obstacles. The part arrived within 1 day and they called to make the OB replacement on Saturday morning. The technician arrived with the OB block and a electric screwdriver in hand. He turned on the set and then says," That's a normal picture and there is nothing wrong with the OB. I can not replace a $5000.00 part when there is no problem." Needless to say I had to bite my tongue. He did agree to get a third opinion and I asked that the third tech have the OB with him just in case it was bad. The third tech arrived this morning and he had the OB with him.
He turned on the set and as it was warming up he plugged a color generator into one of the front inputs. He placed a pure white screen up to view and said, "see those color bands the OB is bad and it will take me a while to replace it. Three hours later it was done and it looks beautiful.
For those interested, there are 4 fans inside the Q and the tech cleaned all of them.
What bliss a perfectly functioning Q is in ones life.
OT.
I just received an OPPO DV-983H DVD player two days ago and it is an incredible SD DVD machine. I returned a Toshiba HD-DVD A35 and the OPPO upscales a whole lot better. I can honestly say some SD DVDs are close to HD when played on the OPPO.

umr arrived punctually (as always) this morning. He spent about 2.5 hours calibrating my new OB and tweaking audio settings in my home theater system.
I must say, my picture looks vastly improved and I am very pleased :D He had a cool HD-DVD (time to upgrade to a BD umr ;)) that was a JVC demo, and it was breathtaking!
umr remarked the new OB had much better gamma tracking than he has seen on original OB's, or any other QUALIA006, for that matter.
It's great to be back in pure bliss heaven :)

thesirjay 03-25-08, 10:44 PM I tossed a couple PMs out there - I could use some advice on someone with Q experience in Minnesota (or reasonably near).
thesirjay 03-26-08, 07:00 PM It looks like I have a good place for service In Home Tech Solutions. They have had experience with the Q so hopefully they can get everything sorted out.
Unfortunately I am out of luck for awhile - there aren't any optical blocks available and they aren't sure when there will be. They are simply backordered. I have Sony checking into it. It really makes me wish I hadn't had that tech out as I would at least still have a working (if not perfectly) Q.
Thank you for the support and ideas - I was pretty frustrated. I am still frustrated that the Q is down and out for an undetermined time but at least I think it will get cared for when (I emphasis when not if) the part comes in. The Qualia line said that it should still be being produced so crossing fingers it will be in stock soon.

thestewman 03-28-08, 01:05 PM I would like to comment on my Qualia since the new OB was installed.
It is evident there have been improvements in software or hardware by Sony in the OB since the original OB was installed and manufactured.
Sony probably could be recovering some of their expense in the replacement of the OB by offering an upgrade at 1080P.
HD Viewing
Video source - Comcast Cable DVR Motorola 6412 III outputting 1080I over HDMI
Processor - Anthem D2 outputting 1080I to Qualia over HDMI
Qualia - Pro mode setting at the original settings by Jeff of AccuCal, Hi Altitude setting ON as it increases the cooling fan speed and Power Saving to Reduced.
Viewing live local news in HD, Jay Leno, Dave Letterman, American Idol the video quality can be summed up as:
STUNNING ALMOST 3D. So perfect you might think you could reach out and touch the individuals on the screen
I have also compared the following sources for the same programming mentioned above
OTA Antenna - coax to the Qualia antenna input which would be native at 1080I for ABC and NBC live local news and 768I for American Idol on Fox.
(Note: CBS does not have HD for live local news)
Comcast Cable Motorola 6412 III DVR HDMI direct to input 6, No processor
(I have a second Comcast DVR)
Comcast Cable Motorola 6412 III DVR HDMI at 1080I to Anthem D2 HDMI at 1080I to Qualia
HD DVHS transfers from Motorola DVR to JVC DVHS via iLink (Firewire)
All are indistinguishable from the source
SD Viewing
SD DVD - OPPO 983H at 1080I via HDMI to Anthem D2 at 1080I via HDMI to Qualia
Almost HD. It does not have the 3D quality but the detail at SD is unbelievable.

club968 03-28-08, 08:22 PM thestewman,
Could you please describe what kind of color banding the tech pointed out when he put up the all white screen on your Q to verify the optical block problem. Last night as I was watching my Q I noticed two horizontal bands running across the screen approximately 6-8 inches wide in "light" scenes....
I just paused my dvr on a completely white screen and it's obvious that they are there. Appears to be just a slightly darker shade all the way across the screen. Maybe a slightly brown tint. Is this what he saw on your set?
I have not noticed any green tint at all on my tv when watching black and white movies....and I've been checking regularly since I first caught wind of the OB problem. I don't know if I should wait and see if it gets worse or just call for service. I did purchase a five year extended warrranty when I bought the set so I've got time...

While viewing any source in the Pro Mode there was predominantly green in the picture. Not real bad but evident. Skin tones were normal not tinted green. But around the hair lines and in background scenes the colors were not correct or were green.
Changing modes to Vivid or Standard reduced the green push.
If you tried to view a black and white video source no amount of adjustment would make the blacks black and the greys grey.
A white screen had brown/red tinted horizontal streaks.
Tech said it should be pure white without any bands or splotches.

You say that in regards to my comments or the way your Qualia is functioning ?
If the Qualia take a positive attitude.
1. The OB replacement is relatively easy. Several wire connections and proper replacement of the wiring routing that is important. It also allows the tech to adequately clean the 4 cooling fans.
2. It is costing you zero for the part and the labor. The part costs the dealer
$5000.00 US.
3. The improvement in the video picture is considerable.
thesirjay 03-29-08, 01:40 PM I suggest you try and make sure that the servicer has experience with Qualias. I chose the default for my area (Qualex) and had a quite bad experience. Unfortunately the other servicer they mentioned at the time they were setting me up was even worse (a hole in the wall place with horrible feedback, no answering machine, no website etc). When I called them to say I needed a real servicing solution they magically had a much longer list that wasn't just limited to the shops right next door. One of them was a high end shop (and a Sony platinum partner who was a bit shocked to hear they weren't an original recommendation) who knew what they were doing and had Q experience.
Take it by someone who got burned (and now gets to wait a couple extra weeks at least) don't just go with the default ask them for servicers in your area and call about them. Figure out which one is the best and you can make the appointment with them.

So, what about those of us that do not have this issue YET? Will Sony "make good" as it seems as though we will all have this at some time.
Is there a setting to get an all white screen?

I don't believe there is. My tech plugged his color bar generator into one of the front inputs.
Tuning to the Turner Channel that has old movies in black and white is good test or if you have a Comcast Motorola DVR, using the setup menu will give you a white screen with black lettering.

Do your research as suggested by "thesirjay". Look for previous Qualia or SXRD experience. Also as stated by "thesirjay", a modern facility with modern equipment.
You might want to mention here on the forum where you are located and possibly a Qualia owner already has experience in your area. I would know who to recommend NW of Chicago.

oh, you are referring to the dts-hd master *pop* ... yes, the fix that you apply through the optical port updates the DSP and fixes both the BOMB and the audio lock.
there is also a firmware update, referred to as *main* (vs. the other being referred to as DSP) that upgrades the 9.8, at least officially, to 1.07 (there is a 1.08 but it isn't official yet...that is my understanding anyway :))
there are a couple of threads in the Amps... section.
i'll post links later when i get home if you are interested.

A friend of mine is getting a Sony 52" Bravia XBR4 from CC.
Should he get their warranty for $300 or look into one from GE. I'm not sure if there is some universal understanding out there...
Thanks all!
erikgbx 04-04-08, 08:37 AM Life is not being kind to my poor Q - it is currently dead.
"Anyone else had a bit of moisture/discoloration in between the screens?"
I have seen this discoloration along the top right edge of my screen- the pattern looks like someone took a strip of packing tape and then ripped it back real fast (my area of affect is about 1 inch high and 12 inches long). It is outside of the viewable area, and I can only really see it when I walk up and look at it from an angle. I have no idea when it started, because I just noticed it a few months ago at its current size (I was inspecting the TV after I got it back from the repair shop). I am now very conscious of it, so I will give you an update if I notice it growing.
thestewman 04-07-08, 03:53 PM It does not specifically address the Qualia, but I am sure it would not take much to get Sony to cover the Qualia 006 too.

thestewman 04-07-08, 03:55 PM i live in scottsdale, az. I purchased my set from Jerry's audio video and got my extended warranty through them back in august of 2005. I still got a few months left on the manufacturer warranty though. If anyone knows of a good service facility in the area, a pm would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jason
I am anxious to hear how it has worked out for you with the Qualia

bernster2001 04-07-08, 11:34 PM I have had my optical block replaced. Given the class action, does anyone think that Sony might have gotten it right with the replacements? My set is working great and hope it continues.

Given the infamous "green blobs", I find Sony's latest ad campaign somewhat ironic...

Now that's funny :D

i guess the sony shills would spin it as they were ahead of their time :)
Kcimsan 04-09-08, 08:53 PM I realize that this is an old thread, and I never read all 500 entries, but those that I did were grossly misinformed.
This set was a 1080i and ONLY upscaled to 1080P.
I was looking at this set on eBay, but after talking to the concierge in Ft Myers, FL, she told me that my Sony 50" SXRD that display true 1080P was a better set. I bought it about the same time the 006 came out. Why would ANYONE buy a 70" set that does 1080i when Sony had the 70" SXRD that did real 1080P for less money? So much for forums!
divedude 04-09-08, 09:03 PM No one was misinformed; we know exactly what we got - one of the best displays ever made. Now go away and enjoy your little TV (this is the owner's thread).
Guess I'll just stick to my 70-inch P.O.S. -- while secretly envying those who wisely waited and bought the 50-incher instead. Especially given that we all know that size does NOT matter...

Thank you. I get that Mag, too, but it must be in next Months issue as it is not in the April Issue. I wonder how it would go with my 70" "stupid purchase" Q006? :D

I bet the Q will be "green with envy" :)

Are you serious!!. Get your facts straight before you post such a waste of everyone's time. There are very few things the two TV's (006 and your 50") actually share. With much better optics, higher quality internal componants, superior video processor and a different chip set, the difference between a Qualia and your 50" TV is really beyond any honest comparison. Please go away
I bet the Q will be "green with envy" :)
No problem as Sony will fix it!
And as all 006 owners realize, the Q does not "UPSCALE" 1080I to 1080P, it deinterlaces, with no loss of resolution.
I certainly don't mind critical thoughts, but at least get your facts straight.

thesirjay 04-11-08, 09:35 AM My Q is back!! And doing very well. I think the picture had been degrading for a long time. The 3D feel has returned and I just realized there is a color called blue! Somehow blue had mutated into something else over the years and I hadn't caught it.
In Home Tech Solutions did a great job. In fact they got the "bad OB" working. The tech got it working but the picture looked a bit off he said the grayscale wasn't correct so he put in the OB which he had brought with him in. The picture is amazing again with so many colors I had forgotten even existed. The clarity and blacks are wonderful. I don't know if it is better than new or not but I suspect it may be.
He also mentioned that it was fine to vacuum out the vents (something I had been afraid to do thinking it might suck dust into bad places).
I am back in Q heaven - I can't believe I had been living in a warped world so long but yeah verily it was so. Blue should be vibrant, purple should be vibrant if not you may be having your OB go out of whack (which judging by their track record seems to be a very common problem).

CONGRATULATIONS ! ! !
I think mine looked better than new also. I think it may be the newer firmware.

Gee. I guess we can not just request a change! Mine is a lot better now that I am in Pro mode and power saver mode!
