dogdoctor 11-21-08, 10:30 AM 1)Are the new blocks a "improved" block or is it the same as the one pulled out...just new. If it its just the same old block, I will probably have the same problem in 3 years?Same block, same failure rate. Some folks have been through a few of them already.
2)Would the addition of a micro fan in the back of the TV help keep the new block alive longer? The reason these things crap out is overheating right?I think it is random luck and wear and tear. I hit 9000+ hours on my TV before it started to go. Others weren't even at half of that. I doubt a fan will help much.

Well that sucks. Spend $3700 on a TV that lasts 4 years. Nice.
Its funny because I have a 13" Trinitron that's been rock'n for 18 years without a single glitch.
Sony could probably do more but I'll take whatever I can get at this point.
I wonder what the overall failure % is on this TV. Im sure its skewed on this specific site.

I mean you should have knows that the bulb will go at some time too. $250 later and you have a working TV again. To me that was a $ risk I was willing to take. Others didn't want even that risk. But when the main component of the TV goes...that was an uncalculated loss and expenditure. I think Sony has done a good thing, repairing the TVs and offering the upgrades if you can swing it but you still can't help feeling like you were sold a bad bunch of goods. But I guess you can look at plasmas too, right, do they still have that 5 half life (brightness) issue. I mean I've a friend that bought a $5000 plasma about 4 years ago. He always planned on selling it in 5. I don't get it. But hey, if you've got more money than you know what to do with, how you waste it is up to you. I just agree with you, that when I'm led into wasting it...hmmm. But with the technology changing so fast I had planned to upgrade the TV at some point, I wasn't prepared to do it now, but the wife let me have it since the discount was significant and I would want to do it down the road at no discount if we fixed the TV. She looked at it as an overall savings.
As for the overall failure rate...I think it must be pretty high for Sony to acknowldge the problem, extend the warranty for that specific issue, and fix, upgrade your TV to avoid a lawsuit. Just my opinion though.
steve ans 11-21-08, 10:59 PM I think he said he couldn't afford the LCD replacement option.
My old 60XS955 now sits on the floor awaiting its fate on Craigs List. The Mits 73835 now has pride of place on the tv stand.
Seggers
yes, sorry. I do see that now.
seggers 11-24-08, 08:33 AM So I put my set up on Criagslist yesterday, and I have already had one muppet offer me $400 for it. Muppet!

Finn123 11-24-08, 08:34 AM Anyone ever figure out or hear what the problem was with tender's set as he posted here in February:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=13250668#post13250668
My 60XS955 pulled this little stunt last night. Quickly fixed with the "unplug and wait" method that seemed to work for others.
However, it seems unrelated to the optical block or "bluing" that seems to be the problem for so many others.
On the other hand, with the end-of-year deadline quickly approaching any type of problem, not matter how temporary, is making me nervous.
I wonder if I should be pushing this with Sony.

SeggersLOL. If it's broken, or the people are actually doing their research, what did you expect. I'll ask it differently, knowing what you do now, what would you pay for it. Like I said earlier - I took the $220 for my 50WF655 and ran to the bank. Granted mine did have a slight blue issue and it doesn't even have a S/N (neither does yours).

In this area, considering what else I've seen go up and at what price, I'd say it was a good price for a good unit.
I updated the ad and have had a query from someone who claimed to have actually owned one.

Michael Bryan 11-24-08, 04:32 PM Sony KDF 50 K2000 projection TV has green/yellow screen tint to all colors after 1 year. Sony does not want to replace the board that would correct this ($1,000.00) part. I have heard there is a parts fix for this board. Have you seen or know of this fix?
Thanks
Mike Bryan
nocturn 11-24-08, 05:45 PM Well...I decided to raid the kids collage fund and get the W. I cant see replacing a block again in 3 years on my dime...

That's insane!! That's near the cost new FOUR YEARS AGO! Hopefully no one is suckered into it. Current new DLP projectors at that size are half that now.

filldoh 11-24-08, 06:17 PM Hey guys I have called sony several times and tried to get this offer, I already had my optical block replaced, and now it is messing up again. I called and was on the phone for 2 hours with corporate and they told me there was no such offer. How did you guys come about getting this.
any help would be appreciated.
Did you call the number on this page:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=206&mdl=KDF55WF655
I had no problems. No begging, etc... They offered the repair or replacement without me asking.

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/ele/931240008.html Knowing what we do, this is not very cool. These sets and that flimsy technology that supported them are near worthless. My KDF-50WE655 (purchased 3/05) is still good as I type. It has a very nice film-like picture (except for atrociouus black level and judder -what did we know about judder then?). But if and when it develops the blue blob issue, I would have to sell it with full knowledge of it's issues. Sony really made some fancy looking junk, didn't they? My KDL-W3000 LCD performs so much better even though it's 60mgz. One interesting note is that the W4100, although it has 120mhz and smooth motion, it is 8 bit color. The W3000 was 10 bit, like the XBR models. I wonder iif they dropped the color range to cut corners since prices are tumbling. The worst LCDs are Sharp (I had two of them and returned them for my Bravia). Best Buy this week has a 1080p 52" Sharp for $1299.00

This story broke last week. Companies pleaded guilty to LCD price fixing and were fined. Following this story, I noticed a 52" Mitsu drop in price by $600 in one day at the local Sams Club! http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=398976&pCatg=5883
Others should follow. I am thinking name brand 50" - 60" screens should become sub $1k by superbowl.
Frankly, knowing that, all of sudden this replacement offer for $850 on a W4100 doesn't look like the killer deal it seemed until now. Almost seems like I got suckered into buying their old technology!!

It only happened that one time. Pulling the power plug did the trick. But I do not have to worry about it any more, I have replaced that set with a nice 52 inch LCD (Thanks Sony).

I have left it there and someone else has now offered me $500 for it. Not sure if I should take it or hold out. Actually, I've held out.
I also knew there was some reason that I kept coming back to this one post. My 60 has no blue issues and it does still have its S/N attached. I decided to take the high road on the possibly dodgy dealing with getting LCDs.
So if this guy does know his stuff, then maybe he'll do it. I have the Mits 73 Diamond now.

bailorg 12-01-08, 10:10 AM I think I have the blue haze problem, I've had a blue spot in the corner of the TV that I've tolerated for a couple of months. The spot has also been accompanied by increased graphical burn-in, which also leaves a temporary bluish tint on the screen. The burn-in goes away eventually, but the spot in the corner remains.
Is this likely the problem that is prompting the replacements from Sony?
Also, for anyone who's accepted the offer with the 60 inch model and the official Sony stand, is Sony replacing the stands, or do the new TV's fit on the old 60 inch stands?
Ragermac 12-01-08, 11:41 AM well, dodgy or no I got my TV from Sony this past week and I love it!!!! I moved my old TV Downstairs in the den, if it fully goes, so be it.
This set is awesome, I thought I would miss the extra 3 inches but the black level, resolution increase and 120hz more than make up for it.

Yeah I've been trying to tell the guys with 55/60 inchers, you'll be amazed at the picture and forget about the smaller size. I still can't believe they gave it to us at that price.
bailorg 12-02-08, 05:20 PM It seems the offer price has gone up.
Although I haven't received the email yet, the rep on the phone quoted me: $1168 for the 52V4100 and $1308 for the 52W4100.
Did you guys get the offer email immediately, or was there a delay after talking to the CSR rep?
The rep on the phone offered me a 52v4100 for $703 and the 52w4100 for $843 plus tax. I jumped on it over the phone and have not had any email contact. I called yesterday to check and they have my serial number sticker and it should ship soon. I went with the w model by the way. I picked up a Sony S350 Blu-ray player on Black Friday online for $175 so I should be all set to watch some movies.

I think only 2004 models are covered, but they might be giving you a deal on something different. Just an opinion until you tell us more about your situation.
cmassa - I never got email contact. Mine shipped on Wednseday the week after they got the s/n. Arrived that Saturday - been happy ever since.
ps. did you consider the PS3 for BD and games?

I'm not much of a gamer (too old (?) and not enough time) and my kids already have a Wii which will now go on the 55xs955. I couldn't pass up a Sony BD player for $175 + tax with free shipping. That is a lot less than a PS3. I had considered it when the cheapest players were around $300. Our living room (which is where the new TV will be) is more of a formal space, good for kicking back watching movies but no room for a game system.

I have a 2005 60XS955 purchased from the local Sony Style store, but I still have the optical block problem.
I would seem to think a three year old TV going bad would be a bigger PR problem for Sony than a four year old TV failing, but then again what do I know?

That si a great deal on the BD player. I have two PS3s mainly for BD but some gaming and am in the Beta version of HOME on the PlayStation Network. Keep in mind that for Blu-ray, the PS3 only outputs PCM, audio at least to my receiver and does not output DTS, or Dolby.

I would seem to think a three year old TV going bad would be a bigger PR problem for Sony than a four year old TV failing, but then again what do I know?I agree, but the 4 year olds started having issues at a few month of age. Sony then extended the coverage of service from 1 to an additional 3 years (which ends 12/31/08 - ie. the major rush for the failing TV's now) for just that problem (under presssure of major lawsuit). You should put pressure on them too. I'll admit - I'm glad mine failed when it did - 4 years later, but on the otherhand it sucks that it only lasted 4 years.
DomLando 12-02-08, 11:34 PM Got a quick question for anyone that has done the upgrade.
I have some flashlighting and clouding issues, any idea what Sony would do for me there if anything?
steve ans 12-03-08, 12:58 AM Got a quick question for anyone that has done the upgrade.

These are known issues. If the cloudiing is not seen in content when viewing from a normal angle, don't worry about it. Some clouding issues are visible in content. My KDL-W3000 shows some light non uniformity during no content or black scenes if I view it on an extreme angle. That isn't an issue for me.

Well its pretty bad in the lower right corner and if I am watching a dark scene it is noticeable sometimes. I just wanted to know if it was worth it to call them, because they are probably going to send a tech over and there is not anything they can replace part wise, they would just have to replace the tv which I don't know if they would even consider.

call Sony..the number that offered you this set and explain that you want a pick-up of this set and a redelivery of a new set. There are defective units and if this issue is annoying, then it is defective. there are few perfect LCD sets but there is a limit to what is acceptible. be firm. You were not offered a defective TV.
mpardee 12-04-08, 12:20 AM Small world. I have the KDF-60XS955 and recently developed a blue patch in the bottom right corner that spread almost all the way across the bottom of the screen. Then a blue line developed about 9" from the bottom that ran all the way across the scree so I started looking on the internet to see if anyone had seen this before. Appears I am not alone!
I called Sony and think the offer has gone up (or down) since this is what I was offered:
KDL52V4100 for $953 plus tax
KDL52W4100 for $1093 plus tax
In addition to the price above, there is a shipping cost of $215 for all orders.
I realize I get a thinner TV with 120Hz and 1080p, but this doesn't seem all that great of a deal for me to drop down from a 60" TV that has actually been pretty nice for us, plus I would either have to get a new stand or figure out if it looks OK on the stand that came with the 60". I've had to replace the lamp, but that was a couple hundred bucks and it made it look like a brand new TV. I would like to think I could get more than 4 years out of a TV that costs so much, but things happen.
I'm thinking I will just have them repair the TV. I do have an extended warranty, so I am hoping I am covered if this happens again after repair. Guess I'll have to check the expiration date on that contract.
For those that had the repair done, did it take long for them to come out and replace the part? Does the TV look as good as ever?
Thanks in advance.

Exact same deal I was offered. BTW, I have a 2005 model of the same TV, is that what you have as well, or do you have the 2004?
I just chose to get my current set repaired and the tech is scheduled to come out Tuesday.
ON EDIT: I also just checked the lamp hours and noticed it is above 10000 :(, so I might not be the best barometer of whether or not the TV will be as good as new.

Mine may be a 2005. I am thinking I bought it just before the SuperBowl but can't find the original receipt. I had a friend who worked at Sony and their engineering was moving to San Diego and he didn't want to make the move so he sent out an email about any last requests for his discount. Got the TV, the stand, and the white glove treatment for something like $2800. Pretty good deal at he time as Best Buy had it for $4099 without stand.
I'll have to check. I did give them the serial number so maybe that is how they figured it out.

Mine is a 2005. I paid $843 + tax
It arrived yesterday. 12 days to go about 60 miles. I live right outside of Pittsburgh, it was shipped from the Sony Plant in New Stanton. I guess the holiday did not help matters.
Looks good. Was a little shocked by the connections, lots of HDMI not many component or just straight AV connections. Ordered a HDMI cable from Monorprice.com last night.

Mine had a 4/2005 production date, bought it in 8/2005. I got the $843.00 plus tax deal in november. Not such a good deal now.
seggers 12-05-08, 08:31 PM Well chaps/chapettes and those who can't decide,
It's with a tear in my eye that I wave good-bye to my trusty 60XS955. :( For tonight she was sold onto another family. I'm sure she'll be happy, as they already have the 50XS955. I only hope that those meddling kids enjoy her abilities the same that I did.... :D
I didn't make the 850 that someone earlier did, but I did get 750. Not too shabby at all. That's the first time I used Craigs List.
I shall stop by occassionally, until the locals run me out of dodge, waving pitchforks and torches. :p

DD (changed the original entry),
I bought the set in Feb 05 according to the thingy I have printed.
Price, after 400 savings (CC for those who might care), before tax was 3700 (whole package was just a shaving under 5K ).
It had sat for a couple of months. Turned on first time, tuned some cable channels via some strange thing called coax (only ever used HDMI), warmed up nicely, showed no blue issues of any sort (except the food network logo :p).
Bloke turned up and knew all about the sister set, which made the show and tell a whole lot easier... :D

SeggersThat is awesome...I think I paid 2500 for the 50WE655 with online and managed $220 for a set with intermittent issues. I was happy with that. It doesn't look like I could have gotten more that 500 for a fully working set. Congrats on your sale.
Crazy question, should I sell my 60XS955 to a friend he has offered to buy it for 900-1000, it still has a year left on warranty and extra bulb. I plan to replace it with an DLP/LED 65".

If you have an extended warranty from somewhere call them first, otherwise call Sony (888-649-7669). It may be failure of the optical block?
gweedo1 12-14-08, 11:40 AM no warranty as it ran out June 25th.. when you say optical block is that the same thing as a q box?
I am home playing with now and find that the red doesn't work? there is an option to set the menu's back ground different colors (purple, grey, red, ect) and the red don't work at all, it stays grey?
I'll try Sony but what can they do? no warranty, however it has been serviced before for the blue corner thing? maybe I can use that as an arguement?

Mine was out of warranty, the offered to fix it for free or do the replacement with a new LCD, which I took them up on..... Try calling, it can't hurt, I know I was surpised.
Small world.
That's the same offer I got. My TV was manufactured in Mar 2005 and bought in June 2005.
Initially I jumped on the offer and sent in my sticker in but now I am thinking about backing out of this "deal" and getting the TV fixed instead. They have not processed my order yet so I might be able to do that and just pick up a nice TV locally (and most likely not a Sony).
gweedo1 12-16-08, 03:24 AM So I am confused, this "deal" that was offered is to buy another tv, or have the one you have fixed? Or are the prices there for comparison and you get one of the tv's offered? I would hope they would give us something in the same price range! I paid much more then that for my unit.. I will update after I call sony, thier # is probably in here some where but what phone # did you call to get this offer?
Thanks

Take a look at this mail, it has a number in it.
From what I understand, the offer is either that they repair your unit free of charge, or offer you one of three repalcement LCD at a knock down price and you get to keep your old unit.
If you go for the LCD option, then you have to send in your serial sticker from the back of the TV.
I went a different route in that I sold on my 60XS955 and bought a Mits DLP.
Have fun.

nickn69 12-18-08, 08:19 AM If anyone needs parts for a KDF50we655, let me know, I just went through a heck of a time fixing mine and unfortunately I have a few extra brand new pieces that I don't need and would like to get rid of, including a new optical block A1084660A works in a KDF50we655 and a KDFXS955. I also have an assortment of new boards. It took me forever to figure out all I needed was a new Q box.
Also seeing as I have had this TV apart more times than I'd like to count, I know how to solve most of it's problems as well, so if anyone has some specific questions I'd be happy to help.
Mods if I am violating a "rule" here let me know, just want to help some people out

Finn123 12-18-08, 05:22 PM I have the 60XS955 that I bought in Jan 2005. It has been running fine.
This may be a silly question, but can I buy a new warranty (I don't know if you'd call it extended since the original one expired) for my TV? It could be from Sony or a 3rd party.
Just curious. I may never have a problem but I wondered "just in case" . . .
Sears Home warranty, among others will sell you a warranty on anything and everything. Price depends on whether the item is working or not. However, it may cost you more than what the TV is worth -- but that's a different story...
bailorg 12-22-08, 10:59 PM I took advantage of the optical block replacement which considerably sharpened my picture, but I have been occasionally noticing some darkening in the picture.
Using the directions in the thread, I looked at my lamp hours and they were at 10000+.
I've never opened up a TV before and I am not particularly expert at doing electronics repairs, so I was wondering what I would probably be paying to have the lamp replaced by a technician including parts and labor.
Has anyone had their lamp replaced recently, and, if so, how much did you end up paying?

Replacing the lamp is very easy. It is under a cover on the front below the screen. One screw holds it in. It took about a minute to do it.

scooper836 12-23-08, 07:22 AM I have had my KDF-60XS955 for nearly 3 years. 7500 hours on original lamp.
The set powers on OK, then after a couple minutes it turns itself off, the green light on front flashes 20 or so times while it restarts. This whole process repeats indefinitely. 1 minute on, 30 seconds off.
Any advice?
scooper836 12-24-08, 04:48 AM I removed the lamp, vacuumed off what little dust there was, and re-installed it. Works just fine... for now.
PatInTheHat 12-27-08, 01:58 AM Does the optical out on this TV not work?
I have a receiver with no HDMI input so I was hoping I could connect my HDMI devices to the TV and use the optical out to the receiver however I get no sound. I'm guessing this just doesn't work and is a frustrating oversight by sony?
I don't know if the TV is capable of passing audio from the HDMI input to the optical out. Go from your source to the TV with HDMI and source directly to the receiver with the optical digital connection (don't try to pass through the TV). My receiver is older too, I just run audio directly to the receiver.

Tried this a very long time ago. Didn't work and I believe had something to do with the HDMI handshake. Yes, I too expected it would work.

Unfortunately my receiver has only 1 optical in and I have 4 devices to connect :( I see there are optical switchers out there but I cant seem to find a decent one that will ship to canada that isn't ridiculously expensive.

The optical should work just fine, it will not output the same audio that comes in from the HDMI. I know from past imputs that can not get HDMI audio through an optical ine. I think this early HDMI verision was to help the video clearity more than the audio through put. Before my PS3 i had the optical out going to AVR for HD-TV broadcast shows (5.1) and it worked fine. In fact I still have it hooked up since I use a cablecard instead of a STB (yes, I'm one of those few). My set is a 2004, still on same orginal bulb (would like to know how to check hours used), I'm selling it to friend and getting the 67A750 or new unit if Sansung offers one.

I have had the KDF 55 and after 3 months it went out. They sent out a tech (not real bright) and was unable to fix the problem. Next same problem sent out a tech fixed it again. worked for a short time and replaced the bolb and the picture tube. This happened twice. Now of course, It is down down agian and we are given the option to downgrade to a smaller 52 inch for $1000 plus $215 for shipping. What am I missing. Does anyone really think this is a fair deal for my situation... Please respond and give me your thoughts. Thanks

I would say that if you can notice the picture dimming it is time to consider changing the bulb. I changed mine around 6000 hours and noticed an improvement. Save the old one as a spare in case the new one fails abruptly at some point so you can use the TV until you buy a new one. Occasionally there are "faulty" bulbs. A friend of mine had a bulb go out in about 1000 hours but his second one is going strong.
BassMiesterNJ 01-01-09, 12:16 PM Thanks for the info and advice.

I got mine in February 2005. It was gone for over a month about 2 years ago, while the extended warranty company and Sony fought about who should replace the ob. Got it fixed and now, just 16 days before the expiration of the warranty, it had another problem -- it stays on for about 2 seconds then shuts down.
It will eventually need a new bulb or have some other problem, I guess, so I'm wondering whether now is the time to sell. I have a cabinet in which the tv fit perfectly. What are people replacing them with?

Flat panel TVs/ I have a RP and a W3000 Sony. You know what, the older RP has more pleasing color IMO (But many other drawbacks like flimsy technology, poor viewing angles, black levels. etc).
seggers 01-30-09, 12:56 PM I got rid of my 60xs955 about 6 weeks ago. I had never had any OB issues and I replaced the bulb as a means of getting some mileage out of the EW. I was lucky, based on what I've read here.
I decided that I wanted bigger, much bigger, but without going FP. So I stayed in the RP arena and bought myself a Mits Diamond 73" incher. 73835 is the model number.
I do admit that I miss the sharpness of picture of the Sony, but I don't miss the fear of the OB issues or the fact that Sony seems to have washed their hands on us.

yes you are but call Sony anyway. It does sound like an optical block issue. Never hurts to persevere. The CC warranty is handled by an outside company so if it hadn't expired, you would have been covered by a possibly adequate repair. My 2005 KDF-50WE655 is still fine so I'll be s**t out of luck soon enough. I, too, have a CC extended warranty that expires March of this year. It cost $499.00!!!! I did not purchase an extended warranty for my FP W3000.

I chose a Mitsubishi 73735 after having my xs55 in the shop for over a month and have been very pleased with the new set. I've been using the old sony stand which has worked well with the new TV. I think if you want something 60" or larger you may want to consider picking one up in the next few months with Samsung abandoning the technology now and Mits being the only player left who may or may not introduce new DLPs later in the year.

Thanks. That looks like a very solid choice. It looks like the only games in town right now are the mits 73s or the samsung 67a750, which is getting harder and harder to find.
I'd love to move up to the 65" plamsa panny, but as long as rps still exist out there over 60" and for less than $2000, it's very hard to justify the extra money.
drwtsn32 02-01-09, 12:01 PM That 73" Mitsubishi looks pretty good. Right now my blue ghosting problem seems to be at the very early stages.. very hard to see. I'll probably just retain this set for as long as possible; TV technology is changing so rapidly.

I got $750 for mine from CraigsList in the WNY area. I had to list it twice (to bring it back to the top) and had to fend off the advances of the muppets who thought that an original asking price of 900 mean that they could offer me 400.
It did go to someone who had a 50 or 55 of the same model.
Seggers
Don't know if I'm posting in the right place, but here goes. Thanks to valuable info from here, I was able to get my tv replaced by their deadline and the replacement arrived yesterday. I have no room for the old one, so I have to get rid of it and was wondering if it's worth selling. I've had it since 2004 and it has a blue horizontal line, vertical line on the left, and 14,000+ lamp hours. Or should I just throw it on FreeCycle?
-char
makes sense to me, Seggers. Thanks
seggers 02-06-09, 01:54 PM Freecycle.
The bulb will need to be changed and it sounds like there are other issues.
Just my 2p.

singitloud 02-09-09, 02:22 PM I am looking to replace this TV with one I can mount on the wall and that is around 42".
My question is, am I going to be disappointed in the picture quality (not size) after having my 60xs955 for five years? Any recommendations? I don't want to spend nearly the amount I paid for this one though.
Hey guys,
I have a SONY KDF-60xs955 (obviously) and need to sell it for space issues.

I got a Samsung 46" Series 6 LCD ("LN46A650") screen for upstairs. I am still using the 60xs955 in the HT. I love the size of the 60", but the picture quality of Samsung is... "wow". ;) Black levels have come a long way in the last couple years. The only caveat is off-axis viewing causes the picture to be washed out a little.
If you have the money, maybe check out the Series 9 Samsung w/ LED backlighting -- but I think 46" is the smallest that model comes and its pretty pricey.
singitloud 02-09-09, 04:21 PM Thanks for the info. I will look into it.
Next I have to replace my huge DiamondCase credenza with something a little less obtrusive...
singitloud 02-09-09, 05:10 PM Guys,
Do you think advertising that I recently had the optical block replaced would be a selling point or should I mention it if an informed buyer asks about the problem and then I tell them I had it replaced?
My thinking is that a non-informed buyer would be scared off by the "repair" while an informed buyer would see this as a positive.

mention it. Not doing so looks shady if you're asked about it. Everyone uses the Internet, so the info is all over. Address it head-on and price it accordingly.
No charge :)
singitloud 02-10-09, 09:50 AM So I sat in my room last night... TV is about 7-8' from my face... Looks really big (my wife says too big)...
I went and looked at some 46" and 52" - WOW! They seem small...
I would be going from:
60" screen @ 8'
to
42 or 46" screen @ 9' (because screen would be on wall)...
I don't know if I can handle this reduction in size...
Call of Duty just won't be the same.
Has anyone else done this?
seggers 02-10-09, 09:53 AM Nope, I went from a 60 to a 73....

Different sized screens for different sized rooms or viewing distances.
Replacing a 60" screen with a 42" would be like going from watching a movie at a theater to watching the same movie on a TV.
singitloud 02-10-09, 10:04 AM See that is what I am thinking.
My screen ratio is about the same as a "sitting in the middle" theater experience. The problem is the LCD rear projection and credenza literally takes up nearly two feet of the room and my wife hates it. I guess if the room isn't going to be used because everyone feels cramped in it, it would be better to get a smaller TV and us actually use it.
drwtsn32 02-10-09, 09:56 PM I'm thinking about just replacing the optical block on my 60XS955. How many have done this? How hard is the procedure? I looked at splinke.googlepages.com but it's hard to gauge how difficult this procedure is.
BTW, where have people purchased the optical blocks?

There is a 70" Sony FP LCD TV. I can't link it because we're not supposd to discuss price talk but it is a lot less than last year. Check out Sony Style.

We have a 60XS in our family room that we view from about 10'. Recently, when we got the 52" LCD thru the Sony replacement option we put it on the credenza for a week to see how it would look. And if everything looked good, we would put it up on the wall where the 60XS currently sits.
It didn't look right. Something about the 60XS. Even with its rich vibrant picture, the 52" LCD looked puny and wasn't the same. And to think that it would be pushed back another 2' when hung on the wall made us rethink our plan.
What you could try is doing what I did. Put the 42/52" on the credenza for a few days/weeks and move the 60xs on the floor in a corner. Get it is out of your system, then hang the 42" in the bedroom and shop for a nice 65+" LCD.
Lucky for me the wife saw the difference too!!
Goog Luck!

Goog Luck! Stay away from any Sharp TVs. I am a Sony owner (KDF50-WE655 and a KDL-40W3000). All Sharps have banding issues....I returned two of them.
singitloud 02-11-09, 03:58 PM That is good advice.
I would likely go with the 52" and I really like the idea of trying it for a few weeks to see what we think.
We are currently only 8' from the screen. Putting an LCD on the wall would move that back to about 9.5 feet.
singitloud 02-11-09, 03:59 PM Well, I had a professional do it. I personally wouldn't try it, but that is just me. Changing the lamp was easy, but it was designed to be done by the end-user.

Yeah, after looking a bit closer it doesn't seem like something I want to mess with. Who did you call? A Sony authorized service center or just some electronics shop?
singitloud 02-12-09, 09:26 AM SONY told me a local authorized service center and I called.
The optical block was under their extended warranty.
BigPicture 02-13-09, 08:24 AM singitloud when did you call? I called 2/8/2009 and was denied any and everything. I had a blue blob that faded into a blue hue across the bottom of my 60xs955.
drwtsn32 02-13-09, 09:36 AM For the hell of it I tried calling yesterday. I was also denied. Asked if there was anything at all that could be done since I only missed the expiration by 6 weeks. Asked if a supervisor might be able to approve something, and she suggested I write to the "Executive Review Committee." So I wrote a letter yesterday and mailed it. I'll report back with what they say....
rockcola 02-13-09, 10:34 AM Ive had my 55WF655 for right at 4 years now with no issue on my optical block. I have 1 more year left on my warranty. Does anyone know if anything specific will cause the optical block problem. I am afraid it will go out after my warranty will expire.
drwtsn32 02-13-09, 11:23 AM Isn't it some sort of heat damage? I'm not sure why mine started exhibiting the problem only last month. Mine is also 4 years old as of mid January. So mine happened almost exactly the same time the extended warranty ran out! Figures! lol
rockcola 02-13-09, 01:45 PM My warranty expired on 02/06/09 so I called Best Buy today and they let me extend it for a year for $175. I never got a new bulb, so I figured it would be worth it for the new bulb alone. Now I just need the Optical Block to go out this year.
seancusick 02-14-09, 09:26 PM About 2 weeks ago, blue blob started in the left hand corner. Started to research it, and saw that Sony extended the warrantee and was doing the right thing by replacing a known defect in the optical block. Even though I was 6 weeks past, I figured that they would offer to replace. This week, it has become a large line, that crosses the entire bottom part of the screen.
I called this am, and spoke to a person who forced me through all of the questions of a first round tech support- real painful stuff, when you know the real problem. Asked me to change the inputs, do a hard reset- real waste of time. Then the money question- will Sony do the right thing...... Will they cover this, even though it is a mere 6 weeks past their cutoff?
Nah, same as above posters. She offered to put me in touch with a local repair service where I could pay $1,000 to fix a TV not even 4 years old. 1/2 of what I paid for it. For what it is worth I fired off a letter and email to Sir CEO, and the "Executive whatever Committee." I also sent an email to a few of the law firms that have pursued class action law suits against Sony- over similar models. It seems like some of these firms just feed of Sony and their problem TV's.
This is the end of my purchasing Sony products. A company should cover a known defect, regardless of the price. A 4 year old TV should not fail. I would encourage anyone with this issue to do the same and make them accountable for this, and do the right thing....
seancusick 02-14-09, 09:31 PM Was anyone notified of this "extension?" When a car part is recalled, they make the effort to mail out notification. I registered this set, and I guess that I was expected to go to the news section of their web site. Did anyone receive any notification? How were we to know that this was an issue that they would stop covering Dec 31, 2008.
lcaillo 02-14-09, 09:35 PM You have to ask. It is not a recall. It is a voluntary extension of the warranty applied to whomever they decide it applies to. Even though the blanket extension has expired, if you can make a good case you may get an accomodation of some sort. Be patient, present your case as a loyal Sony customer, and be diligent in making an argument for how Sony benefits by accomodating you. Get your dealer and his sales rep involved if you can.
seancusick 02-14-09, 09:44 PM I have presented my case via certified letters. I will report if anything comes of it. Meanwhile, the blue continues to spread and mock me....a ticking time bomb of blue funk....
Wow, it really sucks to see how widespread the issues are with this TV. I remember being totally blown away by the overall pq and color reproduction of my 55xs when I purchased it some four years ago. Never even had to replace a bulb in that time.
It went out on me back in October and just wouldn't power up. After being in the shop for over a month and reading all the nightmares people were having with the blue blob issues in this forum, the wife and I went shopping for a new set.
I understand the economy is in the crapper now but it seems like Sony would still do a little better job standing behind a product that many of us invested a nice piece of cash in and clearly expected to last longer than four years.
drwtsn32 02-15-09, 11:44 AM Was anyone notified of this "extension?"
When I called the CSR said that people were notified, implying that everyone should have had the opportunity to report the problem before the warranty extension expired. I told her I received no such notice, but I didn't have the problem till mid January anyway, so it wouldn't have done me any good.
drwtsn32 02-20-09, 06:24 PM Hmm...got home today and there was a message on our voice mail from Sony Customer Relations regarding the letter I sent. They asked me to call. Too late to call now... it'll have to wait until Monday. I wonder what they'll do for me...

Hope they offer you the same deal. My KDF-WE655 is still good, on second lamp but haven't watched enough hours for this to occur.
Gotta tell you all and I've said it before. Even though the GWs have lousy black levels, motion blur galore at times, very limited viewing angles for that sweet spot, the color is so much better on the RP than on my above mid-range KDF-40W3000 (a notch below XBR when I got it last year). Yes, the FP has a much wider viewing range, less motion blur even with 60mhz, and more stability, the color is no where as film-like and deep as my RP GW. I love my 768p KDF-50WE655!! Long may it live but I know it will die and i will be s@#t out of luck.
seancusick 02-20-09, 08:19 PM Please let us know what they offer you. I sent my letters this week, and it would be very helpful to hear what they are offering people with this problem now that the "extended" warrantee is out.
My blob has now moved from the left corner, then to a blue line across the bottom 1/3, and now it has morphed into the last stage that others have posted- it looks like the blue has cracked all over the screen- almost like the inside of an ice cube.
I just came back from looking at tv's- but it is killing me that I paid $2,000 for this, and it just turned 4 years old. My wife also lost her job, so this is just bad timing...Maybe Sony will surprise on on this one. If they don't, feel free to contact me, as I have also made initial contact with the law teams that have gone after Sony on other sets that they will not fix. I am guessing that more and more people will be running into this issue.
drwtsn32 02-23-09, 09:13 AM Ok, I called this morning and they said that they are not going to cover any repairs, but they are willing to negotiate a new TV as a replacement. They said I would be able to choose any TV from the SonyStyle site and a price would be negotiated with the "procurement" department. I have no idea what type of discount I would be offered. All I could do at this point is agree that the option sounds interesting and they forwarded my file to the procurement dept. I'm supposed to be contacted within 72 hours.
What are the chances I can get a 55XBR8 for $1500? ;)
seancusick 02-23-09, 04:36 PM That is very bad news. My guess is they will discount it $400. I am still waiting to hear back from the letters that I sent. I will post if I get any response as well.
drwtsn32 02-23-09, 04:45 PM How is it "very bad news"? I think anything is better than nothing; they didn't have to do anything at all for me if they didn't want to.
I'm hoping the discount will be more than $400 though!
rockcola 02-23-09, 05:18 PM Although good that they are doing something, you can find prices much cheaper elsewhere than the Sonystyle store. Im going to fight for the KDL-52w4100 at $843 plus tax, which was offered originally. Hopefully they offer you a good deal. I mailed my letter last week so hopefully I hear something this week or next.
rockcola 02-23-09, 05:31 PM Talk about timing. Got my call today too. Same song and dance. As a offer of good will; sony will negotiate a price.
One of the other guys on this site said he got an offer of $1000 plus $220 shipping for the KDL-52w4100 I believe. My guess is that is about what they are offering.
I just changed the bulb for the second time on my 60XS955... and it's still working/looking great.
/knocks wood :o
drwtsn32 02-23-09, 06:35 PM Well $1k for the 52W4100 seems like a decent deal. But I was looking at the 52XBR6. From what I was told on the phone we can choose any TV listed on the SonyStyle site. Not sure how much of a discount we will get on the other sets though. I'm planning on asking about the 55XBR8, the 52XBR6, and I suppose the 52W4100.
singitloud 02-24-09, 10:45 AM If you have seen my previous posts, you know I am looking to sell my SONY and get a panel. Why? Purely for space reasons.
I really like, and had settled on, the Samsung LN52A630...
However, my wife wants to know why I can't look for a good used one?
So, any suggestions on a good 50-52" LCD panel that I should look for in the used market?
rockcola 02-24-09, 04:46 PM Got my ridiculous offer from Sony. $1743 for 52W4100; 52V4100 for $1243 both plus tax for my KDF-55WF655 that I paid $3200 for. Basically giving me $450 off the already inflated Sony Style prices.
You can get the W4100 for $1949 at best buy. $200 savings yippee.
Guess Im ready for the class action suit.
drwtsn32 02-24-09, 04:55 PM Oh geez...that sucks. I haven't received a call yet from the 'procurement' department.
What did you tell them?
52V4100 for $1243 both plus tax
That's apretty good "sale price" I guess, (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Bravia-KDL-52V4100-52-Inch-1080p/dp/B0018YNZ68/) depending on tax and shipping.
rockcola 02-24-09, 05:00 PM I asked if there was someone else to talk to and they said no. I asked if I should write another letter and he said it would just come back to his department. Sounds like a run around.
Ill call again to talk to someone else, but the CSR just types your info into a computer and it computes the discount. I bought mine in 2/05 so maybe others will get a better deal.
I just want the original deal of $843 for the w4100. $1743 is ridiculus.

Don_Healey 02-25-09, 09:25 PM My KDF-60XS955 just started giving me a dark picture last few weeks, it took me a while to actually notice the difference.
Bought 5/9/2006 and lamp hours were 10,680. New lamp arrived today and only took me 5 minutes to install :) Its a Phillips lamp so I should be good to go.
Thanks to the forum, located the instructions to reset lamp hours.
Happy to say, this was the first and only problem with this set. (knock wood)
singitloud 02-26-09, 09:24 AM I'm sure I could go back and try to find this "SONY offer" that is being referenced, but I am at work and it is quicker just to ask someone who already knows to jot it down...
Are you referring to the extended warranty? I took advantage of that about a year ago.
Dwaine
rockcola 02-26-09, 09:27 AM They were offering an upgrade to a 52w4100 LCD Flat panel for $843 plus tax that ended on 01/01/09
singitloud 02-26-09, 10:46 AM Hmmm.
Wish I had known that. I mean the 52w4100 isn't rated as highly as the Samsung I am wanting, but the price is good.
So, I guess the offer is no longer around.
My Sony 55xs955 started displaying a blue haze (bar) in the lower-right corner about 4 wks ago. It was about 1" high and went from the lower-right corner to about mid-screen. I called Sony (my extended wty expires 11/09) and they gave me QualX as the repair vendor. I cancelled the call from QualX and got Sony to allow a local authorized shop to perform the repair. They came out on 2/10 and confirmed the problem, returning on 2/17 with the optical block to repair/replace it. I took advantage of the set being open and vacuumed out all the dust that had accumulated since Nov '04. The set now plays beautifully and I'm very pleased with the outcome.
singitloud 02-26-09, 11:57 AM Joe,
Similar happening for me. The tech guys actually took it to their shop though and did all the cleaning etc. of the TV. It is like have a brand new set. Problem is, I moved and it is now too big :-(
BTW - I love your signature.
seancusick 02-28-09, 11:51 AM Sony called Friday and left a msg for me to call them. I am guessing that they will offer the same- not to fix a problem that is known as a defect and well documented (by them) and offer me a small discount from the already overpriced sony style store. Meanwhile, the blue haze is getting worse, and it is becoming a problem that I can't ignore. I wish Sony would just own up to this. I know they can't extend the warrantee for ever, but as most TVs seem to start failing around the 3-4 year mark, they need to address this. I am confident that a class action lawsuit will emerge. There are just too many law firms these days whom see things like this as easy money. By the time this is figured out, I will have had to replace the set. No way in Hell am I going to replace the optical block for $1,000- especially when it will most likely fail again with the same issue in 3-4 years.
I will report back what I am offered just to document it here for those in the future who will undoubtedly search for solutions to this problem in the next few months.
drwtsn32 02-28-09, 12:00 PM I'm still waiting to get my 'offer.' I had to send in proof of purchase and as of Friday afternoon they still hadn't processed that yet. I'll call again early next week.
Assuming my offer will be as lame as what others have gotten, I will probably just buy a new optical block and have some shop install it. I think you can buy them online for $350 or so.
steve ans 02-28-09, 12:39 PM How is it "very bad news"? I think anything is better than nothing; they didn't have to do anything at all for me if they didn't want to.
I'm hoping the discount will be more than $400 though!
$400 is barely enough. "Big Box" stores often have models that have been around ready to make way for newer ones for $800 off and more. You deserve a DEAL!!! You spent a lot of money for something that was poorly designed and faulty (as we all did).
mjenergy 02-28-09, 01:42 PM I am looking to purchase a Samsung HL67A750 to replace my KDF-60XS955. The KDF-60XS955 will go downstairs in the kids game room. Will the picture quality of the Samsung be an up grade?
I am looking to purchase a Samsung HL67A750 to replace my KDF-60XS955. The KDF-60XS955 will go downstairs in the kids game room. Will the picture quality of the Samsung be an up grade?
Oh hell yes, I also replaced my 60XS955 for the 67 and the wife even commented that was one dam nice picture and she was glad I made the change. Now the 750 could have some issues but i don't read those pages I'm just enjoy a drop dead TV. Run, don't walk to get one, I got mine at vanns.com mainly because they offer a 5 year warranty (1+4) 5 Year TV-DLP, LCD, Projector, Product Protection Plus for $249.99 other places cost much more for just a 3 year plan.
drwtsn32 03-04-09, 01:39 PM Well, I finally got a chance to call Sony (was sick the past couple days).
They offered the 52W4100 for $1375, and the 52XBR7 for $3040. The 52XBR6 is no longer available through this offer. Not that great of a deal, but it is cheaper than I was expecting based on rockcola's offer (maybe because I had a more expensive 60XS955).
Not sure what I'll do yet........
singitloud 03-04-09, 01:48 PM Is your 60XS955 messed up? Mine was and has since been fixed. I guess you have to be currently having the problem to ask for a "deal"?
drwtsn32 03-04-09, 01:50 PM Yes, I have the blue blob that is becoming more pronounced with time. It's actually not that bad right now, so I'm debating what to do. The offer is not that great, so I may just live with this TV for a while. Maybe I'll replace the optical block myself if it gets worse, or just pick up a newer model television at a discount from Costco or something.
I never had to send Sony proof of the problem.
singitloud 03-04-09, 02:55 PM I will say this about changing out the optical block - it is like having a brand new TV.
In fact, the tech that did the work told me, I was basically replacing the meat of the insides anyway - "like having a new TV".

drwtsn32 03-04-09, 04:06 PM I see you can order a new optical block from Sony for my TV for about $660. Alternatively there's a site online that sells them for less than $400, but they are refurbs (and currently not in stock). Hard to decide what to do; I love having 60 inches, but newer sets have much nicer features.
dogdoctor 03-04-09, 04:07 PM Well, I finally got a chance to call Sony (was sick the past couple days).
They offered the 52W4100 for $1375, and the 52XBR7 for $3040. The 52XBR6 is no longer available through this offer. Not that great of a deal, but it is cheaper than I was expecting based on rockcola's offer (maybe because I had a more expensive 60XS955).
Not sure what I'll do yet........That offer (52W for 843=tax/w free shipping) lasted only till about mid-late November. Mind you there were no XBR's on the table at that time either. At that point the offer switched to about 1000/tax/and shipping too. Still a good price, but with the prices today, not as much of a discount.

Hard to decide what to do; I love having 60 inches, but newer sets have much nicer features.I know a lot of people posted that they were unhappy dropping from a 60 to 52" set, but once you see it in person, many were happy. I, thankfully, was a lucky SOB that went from a 50 to 52" (and not even SXRD). I think the W series is a really nice set (minus some flaws), but to my wife even, it was a night and day upgrade in picture quality. Personally you could do both. Get the upgrade (keep it or sell it) and still fix your old tv. I got in on the 52 at the 843 price and then sold the old RP WE655 for 250 (with blue issues disclosed) lowering my cost even further.
seancusick 03-04-09, 05:28 PM I just called Sony back. They told me that, and these are his words, I swear: "Sony is choosing to no longer offer to replace that defective part. While we acknowledged that this is a defect, we would like to make you an offer to get you out of that model altogether." I asked him if this was going to be the same discounts (listed here) that they have offered others. He would not discuss the "deal." I asked him to record on my account that I would be filling a complaint with the BBB. He told me, and I quote, "you can do that, and others have, but it will just come back to me." I was polite the entire call, and was really taken aback by his utter arrogance. I would be interested in any others now (or in the future reading this) who would like to band together and file a class action lawsuit.
Needless to say, eventually Sony will have to deal legally with this issue. The 4 year mark seems when most optical blocks start to fail. I would be willing to bet that this will happen eventually to all models. When that does, and they continue to choose not to replace the defect, people will continue to put pressure on them. I encourage everyone to file a report with the BBB, and also document in detail you dealings. The fact that this is their "top tier response" is very disappointing. Many people ask my opinions on tech products. I can say with certainty that I will no longer suggest Sony to them as a brand- especially for HDTVs.
Can anyone link the $660 optical block? I can't seem to find this on the sony site. I just want to know my options. I also asked for just the replacement part, which they also declined.
seancusick 03-04-09, 05:36 PM FYI: Here is the problem detailed, along with addresses to forward complaints.
http://splinke.googlepages.com/
rockcola 03-04-09, 06:50 PM Sean,
Did you talk to Scott at Sony's customer relations? If so, he is a total douchebag. He was so disrespectful to me. Im taking my business elsewhere.
seancusick 03-04-09, 07:23 PM I did not get his name. I just could not believe that the person that I spoke to was the solution person. He had this attitude like, take the discount, or leave it. The part about the BBB blew me away. Yes, when you file a complaint, the company must respond. The fact that he told me that he was the person who would see it, and it would not change anything really blew my mind. I am surprised that a company as big as Sony has this person working as their highest level of appeal. I have penned a letter to their ceo, and detailed how I was treated. I almost laughed when he told me that it was a known defect that Sony was choosing to no longer resolve. Talk about a euphemism for we ****ed up and don't really care about you...
rockcola 03-05-09, 01:00 PM Yeah, When I talked to him I asked to talk to his superior and he said I wasnt allowed. I asked who above him I could talk to and he said there wasnt anybody and if I wrote another letter it would just come back to his department. So I guess he was the CEO:) I have a whole new image of Sony now.
I just like how they call you acting like they are doing you a favor by selling you a TV at standard Brick and Mortar prices.
seancusick 03-05-09, 05:31 PM I am filing a small claims in court on Monday. In MA, it cost $40. Reading other boards, it seems like this is the ONLY way for Sony to address the problem and offer a real solution. One person reported that a small claims prompted Sony's legal department to contact him to "work out a solution." Offering a small discount on their overpriced website is not a solution. In fact, it only pissed me off more. I am not going to just fade away- I will not stop making noise till Sony fixes this problem, or offers me a discount that is fair. My set is 3.5 years old, and I paid 2,800 for it.
I would also suggest that everyone going through this file a complaint with the FTC. You can do this on their web site, and it takes 5 minutes. While they do not offer solutions, they do offer information to law firms by allowing them to search their database. I am looking forward to the day Sony is forced to fix ALL of their defective optical blocks in ALL lcd rear projection models. Give it time. The defect is big enough, and will eventually effect all sets in time.
F Sony.
drwtsn32 03-06-09, 05:41 PM Can anyone link the $660 optical block? I can't seem to find this on the sony site.
http://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/index.jsp
Search for the optical block in the upper right. I got the part number off that splinke site.
drwtsn32 03-06-09, 05:43 PM I am filing a small claims in court on Monday.
Good luck, and keep us posted!
seancusick 03-15-09, 09:05 AM The law firm that forced Sony into a class action solution, has filed new court papers over this one and are looking for names to add to the complaint- the more obviously the better. As I replaced my TV with a non Sony, I hope that the settlement covers those of us, and there seems to be many, that reimbursement.
You can read about it here. Read it, and scroll to the bottom third for law firm contact info. Let's put our anger into this and make Sony pay for making us feel helpless and like a redheaded stepchild.

I did, pretty nice guys to work with. Turnaround was a bit slow, but they did as promised.
drwtsn32 05-17-09, 10:09 PM I did, pretty nice guys to work with. Turnaround was a bit slow, but they did as promised.
Do you recall what the turnaround time was?
Did you remove/reinstall the optical block yourself? How difficult was it?
I'm tempted to go this route... if I can get my 60XS955 repaired for about $300 that's certainly a lot cheaper than buying a brand new set.
mgonzo2u 05-23-09, 05:40 PM I finally got the blue blob last week.
My dads KDF-55XS955, that I talked him into buying a month before I bought the exact model had the Optical Block problem resolved no hassle by Sony last October (2008).
I read in this thread that Sony discontinued honoring their extended wa
rranty repairs for this well known problem but I called them to run em thru the ringer anyway.
Because of my "special case", Sony offered to let me choose what model TV I would like an "extra discount" on so I picked the 55XBR8 to see what they would offer up as "compensation".
The offer I received from the Sony "Procurement Department" was $3850 + tax for the XBR8 and of course the usual $1500 + Tax for some 52" KDL(?) model.
Lucky me!
I laughed at the foreigner on the other side of the line and advised him that I was insulted by the offer(s) and that I look forward to joining a Class Action case against Sony regarding this situation.
Of course I don't really give a crud because I have a 3rd party EW that is going to cover this without any issue (already confirmed and appointment is set) but its always satisfying to get the last word in.
Btw, I still want that XBR8......but I will be patient, as always, and get what I want, on my terms.
EDIT IN:
Now I want an XBR9 but I really want what it offers in 55" or 60".

My set reads 8779! Is this even possible? I have been experiencing blue tint and image retention in the lower portion of the screen lately. Is this caused from a dying bulb?

aurorarob 06-07-09, 04:42 PM Got a blue line across the bottom of the screen today. :(
The line is about 4 inches high, starts in the lower left corner, and goes about 3/4 of the width of the screen. (KDF-55XS955).
Sounds like the optical block, right?
Found my extended warranty, should be good to go for coverage - will find out tomorrow.
m3chris 06-08-09, 05:11 PM Does anyone have access to Sony service bulletin E29102171?

Searched the internet everywhere with no luck. I thought that would have worked on sony.com
I hear it is a very common problem, and I need those step by step instructions because they want you to relocate the new style fuse.
singitloud 06-24-09, 11:03 AM I was thinking about replacing my 60" (60XS955) with a wall-mounted flat panel because I am now in a smaller room, etc.
Anyway, There is all this talk and DEMO-ing of 60Hz vs. 120Hz vs. 240Hz and then response times...
The difference is definitely noticeable at the store - mainly on scrolling text, but when I went home I didn't really notice it like I did at the store. My picture looks incredible (always has).
So, I look at the spec.s on the TV and I don't see anything about response time or ##Hz anywhere. I also didn't see any contrast ratio numbers.
Do the rear projection LCDs like ours not have a big of an issue with this?
I was thinking I would be upgrading technology, but I'm not so sure anymore.
Anyone know?
stavesacre21 07-16-09, 02:49 PM So i replaced my bulb and reset my timer today...and for some odd reason, only the LampTM reset...the LampCT is still sitting at the same number (2804).
Is there a way to reset the LampCT time as well? Or was the meathod used to reset LampTM supposed to reset them both?
Hoping from some help on this one guys!
Thanks alot for the informative thread.
Before my bulb started shorting out to the on-off-on-off stage, I had 5144LampTM and 2803 LampCT. Pretty dang low compared to other stuff i'm seeing.
Help me out guys!
MacAttack1970 07-26-09, 10:39 AM I am getting my second instance of the blue blob. The first one was 2 years ago. When I contact Sony, they told me there was a defect in some of the optical blocks manufactured over a specific time period. The tech came out, confirmed the issue. A week later he replaced the optical block with a permanent fix from Sony. Well, now, the permanent fix is temporary. I just started getting the blue haze in the same place and growing daily.
I called Sony and had the normal arguments with them. I told them that I was given a permanent fix when they replaced it the first time. Same run around as always. I will have to pay a tech $100 to tell me the optical block is bad only to tell Sony the same thing with no resolution.
If there is a class action lawsuit, I want to be in on it. I know I have a defective unit and it is more than the optical block. My bulbs only last a year and about 1400-1500 hours total. I am through 4 bulbs in the little over 5 years I had the tv.
My bulbs only last a year and about 1400-1500 hours total. I am through 4 bulbs in the little over 5 years I had the tv.
Sorry to hear about your blob returning. :(
I hope you don't mind me ask this, but out of curiosity: how long is the TV on during the average day in your household... and more importantly, how many times is it turned on and off each day? Also, did you replace the bulbs with ones that are Sony-branded?
The reason I ask is I believe that the bulbs will last much longer if they only go through one to two power cycles per day and the TV is left on between viewings. In other words, my theory is one power cycle is equal to many hours of the set being on without turning it off -- but I was never sure if this is true nor how many hours a single power cycle make take from a bulb.
MacAttack1970 07-26-09, 12:27 PM The only Sony branded bulb I had was the original. The tv never went through ridiculous power cycling. Maybe 2-3 times per day. On average, it is on about 4 hours a day, give or take here and there. Don't quote me on this, but I believe Philips is the primary supplier of the bulb no matter which you buy.
The TV itself is great when it works. Unfortunately, I am looking at an insane repair bill or purchasing a new tv. I will not pay $1000+ to have it fixed. The offers I have read from Sony are ridiculous. I will no longer purchase a Sony product because of this.
robshdtv 07-26-09, 01:38 PM FWIW: I took advantage of the swap out for my 55" last year and getting the 52" LCD at quite a discount. I have been using my 55" still as I couldn't see tossing it when it still works, however the blue haze on mine has definately spread. I think its safe to say I have about 15K hours on it. I have been debating on paying $300 to get a refurb'd optical block. I have replaced all the fans myself, bulbs, cleaned out the inside, along with removing the optical block to clean out the dust. I feel confident in swapping it out but torn about spending the money knowing it will eventually happen again. Nice tv when it works, its just to bad the optical blocks have a major design flaw.
Maybe I should take the $300 and put it towards another LCD?!? 55" LCDS are becoming more common and cheaper.
MacAttack1970 07-29-09, 01:04 PM I just received a call from an attorney's office looking to file a Class Action against Sony on the KDF model tvs. He said it is a relatively simple process. He said because of the number of people with the failure, the fact that this is the second unit that has had the optical block failure, he thinks it will not be a difficult Class Action.
What is needed:
1. Agree to be the name on the Class Action against Sony
2. No cost to me
3. Receive the settlement for the damages/repair
4. Receive minor compensation for time in Deposition and no need to go to a trial if it gets that far.
Anyone have any experience in this?
Thanks everyone for all the great information . I have a KDF55-55XF655. I don't know the difference between the XF and XS, but they seem very similar.
I recently noticed a light blue tinting on the screen reaching from the bottom and going up, like flames. But only when the TV was on a solid gray screen, which only happens when I'm switching channels (in between the channel change). Last night The TV screen went blank, the green power/standby starting flashing, and after about 30 seconds the screen came back on. This happened over and and over for about an hour while I contacted tech support. Turned the tv off and this morning/today seems fine. But it sounds like I can expect this on/off problem to start again.
Questions: Are the blue tinting/blob issue and the on/off cycling issue caused by the same thing? I need to get a new bulb and am wondering if that will resolve the on/off issue. Or should I just call a technician to take a look?
I have 9,460 hours on the lamp. The lamp count is 3361.
Jim_Clark 08-24-09, 02:03 PM Ughh, me too. Replaced the bulb (official Sony replacement) - beautiful picture but almost immediately I noticed blue stuck pixels. Then I really started to notice the blue blob in the lower left hand corner. Well, you all know the story- it doesn't get any better. Finally googled blue blob instead of stuck pixels and learned the sad news. 'course the warranty is out, ditto on the extended warranty. This blows big time.
Local repair service says 800- to 1000 to fix which I guess is cheaper than another 2500 to replace the set. I'll keep following the thread to follow any possible class action suit. I'd sign up for sure!!!
I understand things break and sometimes you just get unlucky. It's almost incomprehensible to me when Sony knows they put in a defective piece, own up to it for a while and then just wash their hands of the situation. One thing I know for sure is that it's gonna take one heck of a product/price to get me to buy anything from Sony ever again, well, except for a new optical block : )
The kdf 55xs955 was great while it lasted.

steve ans 08-24-09, 09:24 PM You can get a decent quality middle of the line 52" LCD for under $2000 and a 46" for $1300-1500. Don't get that thing fixed. It gets me pissed that my KDF50-WE655 hasn't dropped dead in time. I watched it maybe an hour or two a day so the original optical block is still good and I'm on the second lamp. Sony should take ownership of all it's shoddy LCD RP TVs and offer replacements without a time deadline. They sold a bad and very expensive product.

Any suggestions as to where to purchase a new lamp (60XS955)? Mine has 10400hrs and probably over used already. Also are they difficult to replace?
DirtRider 09-10-09, 04:41 PM Is there any evidence as to the blue blob problem being most often attributed to people using the full wattage of the bulb instead of the reduced power mode? I have been using it at the 100watt setting I believe it is mostly because it was advised early on for better blacks. Wondering if this might help save the optical block too since I remember someone on another forum showing the whole thing taken apart and commenting that it was probably due to excessive heat. Mine is still fine but very little use at under 4000 hours.

I've successfully replaced my lamp twice, same model of TV. It's easy, but I have to admit I was nervous the first time I did it. It's pretty straight-forward... popping a panel, turning a thumb-screw, sliding an access door and using the supplied allen wrench. Everything is done from the front of the set, which is nice.
Both of my replacements came from a place called gear4less on eBay. They are still selling them there and have 99.8% feedback.
Once you replace the lamp it should be brighter and look like a new TV. Good luck!
I'm still on my original bulb... how do I check to see how many hours are onit and when to replace it?
Sold my Nephew my set 60XS955 in Feb [he's a heavy gamer] and its' also on 1st bulb, 5 years old as of june:D

rcajun39 09-17-09, 09:13 PM Two days ago my KDF-60SX955 went dim. I can only see the picture at night with all the lights out, and then only barely. I'm assuming it's the lamp.
I have 8641 hrs on it and 2600+ cycle times. There are no flashing lights on it, it blinks green while powering up then stays solid green after that. Just want to verify the lamp is the problem.

Can't say for sure, but IIRC... the lamp is designed to dim before it blows.

Yeah, it really sounds like the lamp. You have gotten A LOT of hours on it. I think I replaced mine around the 4500 hour mark (twice now).
Wow how much Info I have missed here about this Sony's.In my house I own nothing but Sony products, about 3 months ago my KDF55XS955 TV (I bought it in april 2nd 1995for $ 3.500.00 the same day when Pope John Paul 2nd past away)started with the blue screen starting from the bottom and today has spread more and about 14-20 mini dot pixels around. Before my waranty ended my bulb went out I called waranty place the technician came instaled the bulb and he was gone in no time.(He did not do any maintenance of cleaning or anything like that??)After 1 month my waranty ended I tried to extend it but they did not let me extend. After 3months I started seeing this blue color and 1 mini pixel here there.I did not pay attention because I thought this was probably from my satelite provider.I called TV repair man to check my unit and he told me engine light-optical block??? it's going to cost $980.00 if I want to fix it.I don't know what to do,my wife loves this TV...I wonder is Sony going to pick my tab to fix. I have not called them yet, only 4yrs very short time for this TV to go out like this.Any advice to get me going to the right direction??/ Thanks zilo

Sorry -- many have tried to get Sony to pick up the tab after their replacement offer expired, but so far no one has reported success.
Best advice is to save the repair cost and apply toward a non-rear projection TV. Good luck.

Huge question there.
If you are wanting to stay at or around 55" and don't want rear-projection anymore, you'll have to decide between LCD and plasma... and you'll get arguments as to which is better. Start looking at Samsung for LCD and Panasonic for plasma, but both will be pretty expensive at that size.
If you don't mind bulb, have the room and want to save a lot of money, possibly consider a DLP rear projection - you can even go up to a huge 72" display from Mitsubishi for under $2000, and a 60" model should be around $1200.
I can't steer you toward once choice or the other because of the variables (budget, preference, size, etc..) Go to a store, do some looking, see what models you like, and check the forums here on AVS. I'm sure you will find something you like better than you current 4-year old TV.
Good luck!

I'm not sure where, but Sony doesn't make that optical block, nor any rear-projection TVs, anymore. Any part you buy for your current TV will be old and have the potential for the same problems you are experiencing.
Maybe look through Craig's list? Someone might be selling your model of TV for cheap because they were very popular years ago. Just do it knowing there's a probability you'll experience the same problems, if not now then maybe sometime in the future.

I think this is the one, out of stock though. They may be able to repair your block though.

Thank you DaverJ and thank you cmassa for your help
By the way DaverJ or any members any suggestions on what TV is good to buy in the market today with no problems and good quality Picture.:confused:Thanks zilo
zilo: I've had my 60XS955 since late 2004 and have not had any problems with it, but if my optical block or anything else goes bad anytime soon, I'm going to seriously consider Mitsubishi's new line of RPTVs, which has garnered some pretty decent reviews -- The 82" model (WD-82837) is selling for $4,700 and the 73" model (WD-73837) is going for just $2,700 on Amazon...
Thanks for the info yangc

DWBoston 10-31-09, 12:36 PM Just noticed the blue fog again, a little more than two years after replacing the original optical block under the Sony warranty. I may give Sony a call, just for the hell of it, to see if they will do anything, but I'm not putting another nickel into this TV. Pretty disappointing that a $3k television would have this many problems inside of 5 years, and that Sony has abandoned these sets and left people hanging.

That's why a lot of us got out whilst the getting was good (or in some cases bad)....
Sorry to hear the blue blob has returned.

I considered the "deal" on the LCD Sony was offering at the time, but my wife wasn't too thrilled about spending anything on another TV so soon, so I opted for the free optical block repair. Hopefully there will be some deals on LCDs in the 50-55" range in the next few months. :(
rcajun39 11-01-09, 12:47 AM Changed out the lamp and the tv came back up nice and bright. Unfortunately, a motnth later started seeing blue dots on the screen and they started increasing.
My logitech harmony does not seem to switch to Video 8 directly anymore.
Basically I can use the TV/Video button and sequentially step thru all my inputs 1 - 8 without a problem. But if I am on Video 2 and want to jump to video 8 I cant do it anymore by pressing the Video 8 button on my harmony. I can jump from any other input to any other except 8, eg. I can go from Video 4 to 7 etc. I dont know if harmony changed the discrete code for this input.
Is anyone else facing the same problem?

I don't know if you are aware of this, but there isn't a discrete way to get to input 8 on this TV. The workaround, which used to be in the Harmony code, was to switch to input 7 and go up one input.

Wow really? For the last 2 years my TV has been connected to HDMI 8 and I always thought my harmony was switching it. Hmmm looks like I was wrong!

Yeah -- I'm guessing input 8 (2nd HDMI input) was added to this model toward the end of the design phase because inputs 1 through 7 can all be changed discretely... it's only input 8 that can't.
Maybe this was low on Sony's priority list because their remote doesn't have discrete input selection, so few would notice.
W0lfm4n 11-11-09, 07:08 PM Is there any new word on a class action lawsuit? If there are any attorneys reading this board, I am definitely interested.
I have been a Sony nut for many years and have not only personally purchased their products, but steered many friends to them as well.
I have the typical BlueBlob problem and I don't see why Sony does not take this opportunity to prove themselves to their customers. Instead, they are going to push a lot of people to other vendors for a long time.
My vote is to show up with my Sony in the back of a pickup truck along with a big sign that states, "5 year old Sony for sale, doesn't work any more and Sony won't help". Park the truck in front of Best Buy at 5 in the morning on the day after Thanksgiving and stay all day. If enough people did this, I think Sony may wake up and take care of their customers.
Here's hoping that Sony does the right thing by their customers.

Sony won't do anything. I called them last week about the second round of the blue fog with my 60XS955 and was treated pretty rudely by "customer relations". The rep kept reading off a script and refused to transfer me to anyone else. Sony has washed their hands of this issue. If there's a class action suit, I'm in.

imageWIS 11-16-09, 12:33 AM My 60XS955 had an optical block problem about a year ago (the TV is an 04', bought in 04') and was replaced free under the extended warranty. Then about 4 months ago the bulb died and we replaced it for a little under $200 after tax and shipping charges. Other than the warm up time and the two aforementioned problems, the TV has been excellent.
However, unlike 2004, Sony's current TV lineup leaves much to be desired against the competition. When my TV finally goes (hopefully not for a few more years) I hope Sony has kept up with the Samsung / LG; especially regarding advancements in LCD-LED technology.
Oh, and for those looking to replace their 60" TV's, I often see offers from Best Buy for new Samsung 55" LCD-LED, 240hz, 8 series TV's for an even $3000: which is 2009'stechnological equivalent of the XS955 in 04'.

How are they "rebuilt"? Do you replace the parts that are damaged?
How are they "rebuilt"? Do you replace the parts that are damaged?I completely tear down and rebuild the same way Tri state module does. I just do it for less.

Interesting.... What's your turnaround time and how much do you charge? PM please :)
