I wish I could help. I personally, at this point, wouldn't replace the optical block on my KDF50WE655. It could be just an adjustment that the technician has to make. Have them come back and fix it.If yours ever fails and you want to bail on the set, let me know. I am interested in the parts.
Interesting about jjb220 (google revealed his eBay service)... sorry I missed this earlier in the thread and good to know this service is available!
Two questions:
-does the optical block rebuild work for the known "blue blob" of these sets?
-is the OB difficult for a person with average mechanical skill and limited tools to remove?
Thanks for the heads-up drwtsn32!

Thanks for the heads-up drwtsn32!The removal is easy. The most one would need is a 10" # 2 Phillips head screwdriver. Its a matter of unplugging things and removing screws. Installation is reverse of removal. Nothing to do just plug and play. 55" and larger sets will need the cabinet adjustment for vertical centering at the support bracket before the back cover is reinstalled if it has been disturbed.
The repair eliminates any imperfections in the picture. It eliminates the blue blob, blue haze, stuck pixels, Dim picture after a new bulb, Intermittant shutdown. So many things are corrected from the rebuild. I have even had OBs where a failed self repair ruined alignment for the 3 colors, the focus, the vertical centering and horizontal centering. The rig I have shows exact center and size for each KF and KDF model no matter the size so I can bring it back to factory spec. Thanks, John
drwtsn32 12-19-09, 10:43 PM does the optical block rebuild work for the known "blue blob" of these sets?
That was my problem. I started having a blue haze/blob develop at the start of the year. The blob progressively grew as well as the number of stuck pixels. I remember being able to count the stuck pixels....oh, now there's 2...now 3... now 10... by the time I ended up removing it there must have been thousands of stuck pixels and the blue blob covered a large percentage of the screen. Those problems are now GONE.
is the OB difficult for a person with average mechanical skill and limited tools to remove?
As jjb220 pointed out, it is not that difficult. There are many connectors you must disconnect, so take lots of pictures as you disassemble to help you remember how things go back together. I just took my time, didn't rush myself, and had no trouble. I did lots of vacuuming while disassembling, too.
Like he said you do need a very long philips screwdriver to loosen the two screws that hold the optical block in. Other than that a regular philips takes care of the rest of the screws.
Here is a web site that shows pictures and more detailed instructions on how to disassemble:

I have a KDF-55XS955 about 4.5 yrs old. Had the lamp replaced last year. Lamp TM is currently at 12,000 and Lamp CT is 7222. Last couple of days the TV seems to lose picture and sound sporadically and them comes back in a couple of seconds. This can happen a couple of times in a minute or be as far spread apart as 30 minutes. I also saw a couple of teal looking blue vertical lines once. They cleared once I powered off and on. Any one has any ideas what this may be due to? Thanks

A lamp fan not spinning at its proper speed because it packed with dust will make this happen. Unfortunatly to clean it the optical block needs to come out. I had several sets come to my shop reportedly behave this way just before the thermal fuse went out because a clogged lamp fan caused an overheat. The sudden shutdown/ restart may be the reason the picture went to lines. Also this bulb is getting up there in usage and may be failing slowly. I would look into another soon but start with the dust. Good luck, John

Thank you John. I will try and find some one to service the set. This guy had changed the bulb for me last year and seems to think its may be an issue with the light engine, but I would agree with you that it is probably dust. I don't think I have the expertise to clean the fan and remove the optical block. its just hard to find some one who knows for sure what they are doing and do it for a reasonable price.

I want to connect my 55XS955 to my PC and I am curious how you have your PC connected if you do. I have a DVI cable on the PC converting to the HDMI for the SONY but I dont care for the results and cannot seem to get a full screen. I think I may need a better video card but I am worried ill end up the same. I tried a few different settings and lost picture so I had to remove the card and use a VGA monitor to restore the settings. Thanks, John

Sorry... I don't, and have heard mixed results from those that successfully have done it.
Did you try straight 1280x720 @ 60Hz?

I used to connect my PC to my 60xs955 via a 16 foot DVI to HDMI cable.
I had to change the resolution of the PC to match that of the TV. Plus the ATI card I have has 2 outputs on it, so I cloned the PC output to the TV. I had to enable the 2nd display each time I wanted to use it. This meant I could control the PC (on it's LCD panel) and see the output on the TV too.
It was a bit of a PITA and I was glad when I finally worked out how to stream to my PS3 and do away with all that crap (and selling the TV didn't help much).
Stick with it, or get yourself a PS3, hardwire it to your home network and get yourself a copy of PS3MediaServer.

I tried getting my pc to work nicely with my 60xs955 and was never satisfied. I had 3 video cards and tried everything I knew including powerstrip. From the PC section here they were saying I had to edit something in the service menu and I never got a straight answer. I did exactly what Seggers did and got a ps3 running ps3mediaserver and never looked back. It works excellent.
I use a 40" sony lcd (kdl40z4100) as my computer monitor and that sync'd up nicely with both video cards I tried it with. Works with with dvi-hdmi or rgb. Not sure what the problem was with the old xs955. I tried dvi-hdmi and also component out of an ati card. Somehow it interprets the signal differently and I could never get a crisp picture meaning it must not have been doing proper 1:1 pixel mapping.
I'd really like to know if anyone ever got it to work right on this set and what they are using and what they modified in the service menu.

From what I understand, it's impossible to get 1:1 on this set because it only accepts standard SD and HD video inputs (480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i)... however, the output display resolution is not one of those (788p if you believe the pixel count from Sony).

Yeah I think that is why some people were hacking stuff in the service menu. I was a little too shy to plug in a bunch of hex values when I had no idea what they did and could have rendered the set garbage if wrong. If I had some consensus that a few people got it working by doing something specific then I might be willing to try.

I have the DVI to HDMI and I am not getting the wide screen I can get on my Mitsubishi WD-62825. The difference is the Mits has a VGA/PC connection. I was considering a VGA to component converter because of the analog matchup. I guess the answer is that I will not get better results from the Sony with the PC from reading the previous post. Thanks for your info, John

DWBoston 01-09-10, 11:56 PM Here's a link to a Facebook group dedicated to Sony RPLCDTV owners with defective sets:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Have-a-Defective-Sony-TV/182875766612?ref=mf
There's some very interesting info there, especially the link to Steve Linke's site that breaks down everything related to the optical block defects:
http://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/
It's very disappointing reading this stuff, especially the info that Sony knew the optical blocks would go bad, even before the first RPLCDTV was ever shipped. They also replaced the optical blocks with the same defective parts.
It's interesting to see that Sony is apparently again making offers of "discounted" LCD's to people who are complaining about optical block failures. There seems to be more activity in the last month and more people becoming aware of the issue.
I'm starting my own personal Sony boycott - I've ordered a 58" Panasonic V10 plasma to replace my 60XS955. I've got a house full of Sony stuff and this will be the first non-Sony TV I've owned. I can't justify buying another Sony after this fiasco.
Thanks to this forum, about 2.5 years ago I was able to get extended warranty information about Sony's defective blocks after noticing the "blob" problem slowly progressing on my set. And just last night, I noticed that the "blob" is beginning to return on the lower edge of my screen.:mad:I'm getting rid of this set and without a doubt, this will be my last big ticket electronics Sony purchase. And the fact that Sony had beforehand knowledge of these problems has motivated me call everyone I know and do not recommend they buy anything Sony.
Thirsty 01-30-10, 11:13 PM Does any one still use their kdf 55/60 xs 955? After 1 optical block, 3 thermal fuses and two bulbs I still watch mine everyday.

Still loving mine... only thing I've done to it is change the lamp twice so far (knock on wood).

WOW! I wish I had luck like that. I just changed a thermal fuse today.
I do like the set even with its problems.
My optical block is off getting rebuilt as we speak. It still gets daily use.
steve ans 01-31-10, 01:31 AM Although my 2004 Sony KDF-50WE655 is still going fine (one lamp replaced and I consider myself lucky) and even though I have a zillion other Sony products including a Bravia 40" W3000 LCD TV, I no longer feel Sony is the ultimate of consumer electronics. When the RP dies, I will certainly look at other brands. Sony knew way back that their RP sets were crap but we all fell for the brand. There is plenty of competion out there.
Thirsty 01-31-10, 02:03 AM Yea I have to be honest, when I was being mesmerized by her beauty I wish I had walked away. I will be looking at other brands myself next time around.
HGN2001 01-31-10, 12:59 PM 55xs955 owner here. We bought the set in Pennsylvania about five years ago, used it reasonably over the years, had it packed up in its original carton and moved to our retirement home in Florida, and it's still working just fine.
We've never had any blobs, never replaced any bulbs, and it still works great - knock on wood.

egruber 01-31-10, 05:22 PM I have a 60XS955 going on 5 years. We use it an average of 3-4 hours per day and nothing has been repaired. I am even using the original bulb. I have an extended warranty from Sony that runs out soon, so if the blue blob is coming, I hope it arrives quickly! Otherwise, I will probably have the parts rebuilt by others I read about on this board. Seems like too good a TV to throw away.

Thats how I feel about my KDF-60XS955. I also have a 55 and I think it is the best model Sony built of all the RPTV LCDs. My optical block went bad at 15,000 hours but the 55" is still going strong at over 17,000 with only a cleanning. Since I can do the rebuild myself, love the size and the way it looks, I will keep it around for a long time despite the known issues. I look at the new sets with the motion flow and LED backlit with 120 and 240 Hz and the picture on my Sony still looks as good to me if not better. I hope to keep repairing optical blocks for those of us who want to get more life out of these sets.

I have yet to see something current form SONY to compete with the Samsung, LG and Vizio sets of comparable tecnology. Sony today does not look as good. Not sure why. Maybe they will come out with something.
andy4theherd 02-01-10, 07:11 PM Hey guys, owner of a KDF-55WF655. I purchased this TV new from Best Buy in '04. I started noticing the infamous blue blob a few months ago. It has gotten worse. I started researching and can not believe what I found out about this issue. My extended warranty (that I had no clue about) has expired. I found a reputable guy on e-bay that will rebuild the optical block for $199. This seems like a good deal.
Now on to my real question...
About a week or two ago the TV screen went blank and there was no audio (as if turned off) while we were watching. The Power/Standby light on the front of the unit flashes green aproximately 12 times (maybe more). After several seconds the picture returns followed by the audio. This is now happening at least once or twice a day. I have no errors listed in the diagnostic menu. I thought it might be an issue with the UPS the unit is plugged in to so I connected it directly to the outlet and got the same problem. I thought it could be an overheating issue, but Sony indicates 4 green flashes for overheating. Any ideas?
Before spending money on the optical block, I want to be sure this piece of junk is worth the effort. Thanks in advance for any help!

How many times have you changed the lamp since 'o4?

never (I have a home theater in the basement and do the majority of our watching on an Epson Powerlite 1080 Home projector and 106" screen)
I assumed the "Lamp" light on the front panel would turn-on when time to replace it. Could that be the problem?
Thanks!

I don't know if that's the problem, and I'm not that knowledgeable on the WF655. But if you are thinking about rebuilding the optical block, I would also factor in the cost of a new bulb (around $150) on top of that because you are due for a new one. And that's not even a guarantee that either/both would solve your problem. :o
FWIW: Usually a failing lamp is indicated by a dimming picture, followed by a "pop" with no picture. I don't know about the lamp indicator your model though.

Wow. 17,000 hours is an average of 9 hours per day over 5 years. Maybe that is why I haven't had any trouble. If I only average 3-4 hours a day it will last at least 10 years. Are most people who have problems have that kind of high daily hours? Maybe that is why the block overheats?

its hard when you can find a 47" LCD 1080P for $680 shipped:

Before spending money on the optical block, I want to be sure this piece of junk is worth the effort. Thanks in advance for any help!Hi Andy. I am the guy on ebay. The rebuild includes any part needed excluding the lamp and the red and green LCDs. I could troubleshoot this for you at no charge. It would only cost shipping. I have good low hour used lamps if that were the issue to help save on cost. I would say with shipping the entire repair would not go over $400 with a lamp if you did your own work. The LG is not a bad deal at all. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I am seeing failures between 12,000 and 15,000 hours. It would be nice to gauge it that way but it may last more or less from what I see in my repairs. I had a 2003 60" for a cleanning that had more time on it than mine. My TV is on 8 hours a day at least during the week and on Sat from 7 am till 1 am when SNL is over but if I fell asleap watching it, the tv could be on untill Sunday night at 11 pm. Sunday it is on a little less but not much. When I am home I run the digital music thru it so that adds up hours too. The 60" that failed is near the fireplace and the 55 is in the spare room where it is much cooler if that is a factor.

Thank you for the response! I was VERY impressed with the comments on your ebay feedback. At this point, I think we are going to squeeze as much out of this set as possible and then get a new one. With the prices on new and better tech where it is today, I'm not sure I can justify $400 on this lemon. If that changes, you will definitely get my business.
Thanks again!

Some lamps will power on and off when going bad like a street lamp when it fails if you have seen that. It will power up and get to full brightness, run for a while the shut down untill it cools slightly then starts the cycle again.

I have a '04 KDF-60XS955 that was recently repaired by John (JJB220). My bulb went which I replaced (easy). Within a couple of weeks, the blue blob appeared. I removed the opitcal block, sent it to John and put it back in (not as easy as the bulb), all within 7 days. Between the new bulb, block repair and shipping, I did spend $400.00. I've got to tell you the picture is as good as it was 5+ yrs ago! I think $400 was well worth a great picture on a 60 inch screen, that I hope will last at least a couple of years while we see if plasmas last, LCD & LED improve, OLED arrives or if Mits brings back rear projection (the 82" would fit as a replacement).

I pulled up the service menus last night and checked my hours. Only 5079 hours on the original bulb in almost 5 years. I guess I'm not as much of a couch potato as I thought. Would changing out the bulb really provide a dramatic difference? Part of me says 'If it aint broke, don't fix it'.

If you are not getting the brightness you would expect without having to crank the setting up past 55 then you could use a new lamp. Otherwise I would leave it alone but have a spare ready.

andy4theherd 02-12-10, 08:16 PM Hey guys, owner of a KDF-55WF655.
Ok, problems have gotten much worse this week. Yesterday the TV went off as described above aprox 5 times within an hour. During one of the "re-boots" (for lack of a better term) I hit the off button. I then got 5 red flashing lights from the Power/Standby light. The light would flash red 5 times, pause, and then repeat. I couldn't find anything in the manual about 5 flashes, and due to the birth of my second son :) on Wed. I haven't had the time to further research it. Can anybody tell me what 5 red flashes indicate? I will try and get into the service/DX menu later.
Thanks!

so would a new lamp resolve this problem?
Like so many Sony Grand Wega owners out there my 2005 rear projection GWIV 60XS955 has come down with the blue cloud and dots issue. Are there any Sony owners out there that have had this problem and might be able to tell me what the progression of this problem is in terms of time.
My problem started last Sept of 09 and has slowly progressed. The left side of the screen shows a large blue cloud under certain color conditions. The center of the screen started with 5 small dots and has progressed to dozens now. They too show when certain colors fill the areas of the image.
The only solution is to replace the set, but I was wondering how long it will be before the picture will degrade to the point where it will be of such bad quality where it will be too bad to watch.
Thanks for your help

Are there any Sony owners out there that have had this problem and might be able to tell me what the progression of this problem is in terms of time.
My problem started around February 2009 with a very small blue cloud appearing at the bottom of the set. The cloud slowly grew over time to finally encompass probably half of the screen. At the same time I had a few stuck blue pixels eventually turn into thousands of pixels.
I debated for months what to do, but I finally decided to send in the light engine for repair in December 2009. It cost me $200 to repair and nearly the same amount to ship both directions across the country (I went with 3-day because I didn't want to wait for ground shipping), but the end result is a perfect picture again.
jjb220 on this forum did my repair (and many others)...highly recommend his service. If you are on the east coast I'm sure the shipping won't be as bad as it was for me.
Good luck!
Bad Sony!!!! I bought 55xs955 in jan06. sony knew that OB is defective than. they were still selling rear projection LCD tv. I notice blue lines in july09. getting worst day by day. bad sony!!!!!
Got my 60" 955sx in October 2004 and had fabulous picture until a few weeks ago...blue streaks/blob have now made their appearance. While I did put a lot of hours on the set, I'm disappointed that I'll have to get rid of it after just over 5 years.

Hib,
Why not look above you and get your OB rebuilt by jjb220? It would be cheaper than Sony and a lot cheaper than just tossing out the set.

deejay79 02-21-10, 09:13 PM Can anyone tell me if the rebuilt optical blocks are of a higher quality than the original defective ones manufactured by Sony. I purchased my Sony KDF60XS955 just over 5 years ago at Best Buy and the blue streak just showed up in the last few weeks. What ever happened to the quality Sony TVs of the past. I still have a Sony Trinitron from 10 years ago that hasn't given me any trouble. You'd think after spending $3500 on a TV that would buy you a TV for life. The Sony brochure I have even states "Grand WEGA may be the last TV you ever own." One thing is for sure, if this optical block issue can't be fully resolved, it will be the last SONY TV I ever own.

As far as I know there has been no redesign or change in parts for these sets. The blue LCD panel is replaced during a rebuild. It will have the same tendency to develop the problem again. I recently had mine rebuilt by jjb220 and the picture quality is back to new. Great service. Hopefully it should last me another 5 years but by then the technology will have changed and I'll upgrade again.

bucklidl 02-23-10, 09:58 PM I cant belive my KDF-60WF655 is a little over 5 years old and the bulb finally died today. I feel bad for you guys out there who have been having troubles with yours, mines been pretty reliable. Now my xbox on the other hand http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3488/3225165493_3b5f6059db_o.gif
I have the 60" Sony kdf-60xs955 that I bought in Dec. 2004. I just got a PS3 Slim yesterday and tried to set it up using HDMI. I cannot for the life of me get a signal on the TV. The RCA cables work and I get the PS3 signal. I tried the PS3 on my PC monitor (a Samsung) with HDMI and that worked fine. I switched HDMI cables, plugged it directly into the TV (using an HDMI switch usually) but none of it works!
After doing a bit of research, I wonder if it is a HDCP issue. Is this Sony WEGA kdf-60xs955 HDCP compliant? My DirecTV plugs into the HDMI switch, which then goes to the TV's HDMI "IN" port and it works perfectly. What could be the issue here? Perhaps the PS3 Slim is trying to get the signal at 1080p and since this TV can only do 1080i, it cannot see the signal (?). However, all I get is a blank screen and there is no audio/video!
So I have two questions:
1.) Is this Sony kdf-60xs955 HDCP compliant?
2.) How can I get the PS3 Slim to work with this TV using HDMI?
If there is no solution, I will have to resort to using Component cables and an Optical Out (for audio) which would work but I would much rather use HDMI, especially since this TV has the inputs!
PLEASE HELP!!
1.) Is this Sony kdf-60xs955 HDCP compliant?
2.) How can I get the PS3 Slim to work with this TV using HDMI?
I don't know about full HDCP compliance, but I assume it is because there's never been any DRM issues on my end -- including a launch PS3.
The only thought I can offer is to make sure to use the first HDMI slot (input 7) instead of the second (input 8). And make sure the TV is indeed on input 7 with the TV's remote and not a universal remote. This model has a weird way of switch to input 8, there's no dedicated input 8 IR command so many universal remotes go to input 7 and then up 1 input. If you are using a Harmony or something this trick might not be working correctly.
Another thought: the PS3 might be trying to boot to 1080p, which the TV doesn't support. To reset the output resolution of the PS3, try this:
With your PS3 turned off, press and hold the Power button on the front of the PS3 for about 10 seconds (the system will beep as normal as it starts up but after 7-10 seconds it will beep again). The video settings should now be reverted to 480i. Doing this will also reset any theme settings. Then you should be able to set the PS3 to 1080i.
Good luck!

Buhd,
I had (past tense) the xs955 and I have a PS fat. I had no issues connecting them (via my 805 AVR).
The obvious question is have you tried ensuring that you're using the right HDMI input on the TV. Failing that, have you tried connecting both the component and HDMI cables and getting the PS3 to auto scan?
Also, ensure that the PS3 is *not* trying to output in 1080p. The XS only does upto 1080i.
After that, curl up on the couch with the TVs, and PS3's, manuals and have a bit of RTFM....

Thank you so much for that info! I never tried to put the HDMI cable in INPUT 7! I always had it in INPUT 8 because I was using an HDMI switch which connects both my DirecTV box and had the PS3 as well. Now I'm going straight to the TV from the PS3 to INPUT 7 and it works perfectly! I was able to configure it to output 1080i and it looks absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks again!

Good to hear it worked out. Check out the Super Stardust HD game on PSN (I think there's a demo)... it looks awesome!

I had no trouble for 5 yrs until I changed my bulb. Within 4-6 weeks, the blue blob appeared. I think the higher heat produced by the new bulb along with a clogged fan and air flow finished frying my blue LCD screen. When JJB220 repaired it, he said the internal fan was nearly clogged.
Watch carefully after you put in that new bulb and/or get the fans cleaned.

I had the same thing happen the first time I changed the bulb in my set (2007). I had the optical block replaced at that time. I have noticed the current bulb getting dimmer. Before replacing it, I would like to clean all the internal fans and filters to try and prevent a repeat performance. Does anyone have a link to a site that has pictures or descriptions of where the fans and filters are located? Also, does running the set in reduced power mode keep the bulb cooler? Thanks in advance.
Well guys, of course all **** goes to hell in one night. So, I'll give you a little story and vent at the same time.
First off today I ordered GTR Evolution for the PC to use with my Logitech Driving Force GT steering wheel. While on ebay I found a bulb for my XS955 for pretty cheap so I ordered it as my screen is getting dark. Well, tonight Vista has some updates to install so I let it. Well come to find out one of the updates totally screws up one the .dll files and has been screwing up a lot of peoples stuff... Mine screwed up the Steering wheel Profiler program. After deleting the Logitech program several times and reinstalling and doing a system restore back to a few weeks ago it still doesn't work. So now I cannot use it. Spent half the night searching for that problem and never did get it resolved. I can still use the wheel but I can no longer adjust anything on it. So, that got me pretty pissy to start with.
So then, I decide to just go ahead and play on the basic settings that the game allows me to change. After a while I notice the road on the racing game I'm playing looks a lot more blue than black. Switch over to a different input and guess what... Blue Blob there too. Well, while I was looking for what bulb I needed for this tv a few weeks ago I had stumbled apon the many threads of the dreaded optical block failure and remembered one person stating that, "the problem isn't whether your going to have it... It's when WILL you have it. Because they all will do it." Well, of course I was scared and greatful that I've had my XS for about 5 years now and just now having to change the bulb. So imagine my complete dissarray when not 3 weeks after reading it and a day after purchasing a new bulb it happens to mine. I guess that's what the dimmer picture was leading up to.
Anyways, no big deal, I've seen where it's covered under a recall and extended warranty by many of owners. So, I get on Sony's handy chat based customer support where I get told that my model is not covered in the recall and that I would have to buy a new Optical Block. She actually asked me if I wanted to use their repair man to do it. HAHA. Amazing. So, I ended up telling her that I knew what a new optical block cost and I would rather just spend my money on a new flat panel Samsung. Of course she appoligized and I replied with, "It's not your fault." Anyways, she asked it I wanted Sony Customer Care hotline number. Of course I replied with, "No thanks, I'm pretty sure I'm done with Sony. ...again, not your fault." So after a very frustrating night I feel like getting shitfaced at 7 in the morning. Too bad I don't have any alcohol to do that with. I do have a case of monster's though. I wonder how chugging a few of them will make me feel. Can't feel any worse than I do now.
So, after all that I was wondering what you all think my next step should be. Is the XS955 really not in this recall? If not than should I keep trying to mess with Sony's Customer support or should I just chalk this one up to a 4 thousand dollar mistake and join the class action lawsuit? Or should I just shut up already, go buy a new TV, and quit my bitching?
thanks for listening and jjb220... how much you charging to fix this?
The extended window for warranty service related to the failure of the blue LCD ended December 2008. I just had my 55XS955 optical block rebuilt by jjb220 and the picture is like new. I really recommend his service. Taking the block out and putting it back in is not hard. Here is a guide on how to do it.

Awesome link! If that was you, thanks so much for the time put into that page. I'm also going to email the address on that page to give thanks.
My 60xs955 still going strong, knock on wood. :o But good to have this info bookmarked.
It wasn't me but I'm glad it was there. All of the GW IV's are similar. The XS955 have a couple more wires to disconnect is all. I took pictures of mine as I disconnected each wire and removed parts. Took about 30 minutes to put it all back.
egruber 03-08-10, 09:36 AM There is just one fan that needs cleaning, right? People are using fans in the plural on this board, but I always thought there was just the one. Am I mistaken? I'm considering cleaning it when the first bulb needs replacement.
And are the replacement bulbs really hotter than the older ones? Or is that a result of using cheaper non-OEM bulb substitutes?

Yes, can I have a detailed summary of what all air intakes and such should be cleaned on the GW IV's. Seems like my problem has gone away for now so hopefully it wasn't the dreaded failure I thought it was. But, I have a bulb on the way and would like to do a thorough cleaning to ensure it stays cool in there. BTW, has anyone found a way to keep this unit cooler?
gweedo1 03-09-10, 04:27 PM I have a 55 with a brand new optical block (the third one, got the deal through sony after warranty expired for the last one, probably refurb) sitting in my garage, its hooked up to Directv and such and is in running order with no current issues.. I ended up getting a Samsung for the main living room setup thinking this unit was dead till sony fixed it the one last time, my neighbor has seen it in there and wants to buy it, what is a fair price to tell him? I told him $600 and he bit a little and now wants my lowest cost? I paid over $3k out the door for it..
thanks to any replies...
Ok, first off I'd like to say that I'm an idiot on the blue blob thing and overreacted. It was actually something I had done and wasn't the notorious blob that everyone is getting. I'll go ahead and tell on myself for this instance. You could tell from my previous story that I was to the breaking point that night already and that is why I jumped to conclusions. But, anyways, what it actually was is I was trying to get my FPS up on a game and had changed it to 16-bit color and forgot about it. So of course I was getting a blob of color that stayed at one point on the screen. Yes, I know I'm an idiot.
But, I have a question. My new bulb arrived today and I'm sitting here contemplating putting it in. The only thing is that I've read that a lot of these tv's bite the dust after a new bulb install. I haven't had a chance to take it apart and clean it just yet and was wondering if you think I should wait on the new bulb until I clean the whole tv or would it not hurt anything to go ahead and put the new one in?
Also, I keep hearing it is a problem with the light engine. Can someone specify exactly what happens. From the pictures I've seen it looks like the blue lcd is right beside where the bulb is and just looks like it's overheating and melting from the intense heat of the bulb. Am I right in this assumption or is it problem that I cannot prevent from happening? Anyways, I'm really considering installing a new high speed fan to replace the factory one. I figure the more cool air you can pull through there that maybe you can prevent this from happening. But, this would only work if the overheating is the problem. So, thanks in advance for the help.
*edit*
So, after doing a lot of reading I've came to the understanding that my theory is incorrect. I see now that it is just the UV light damaging the Liquid Crystal and also something about a micro organism or something that somehow found their way into the liquid. Oh well, it was worth a shot. Guess, I'll be a Samsung man when this one takes a dump on me. I was wanting a 120Hz 1080p LCD anyways. Just kinda dissapointed as I *used* to be a pretty huge Sony fanboi. My opinion of them has greatly decreased after reading a lot on the optical block issues. Anyways, thanks AVS for all the informative material. Couldn't have done it without you.
P.S. Is there anywhere to buy the micro LCD screens? I'm pretty sure I could reset the convergance with the right screens. I'd only want to do this is the lcd screens were cheap.
blues4life 03-13-10, 08:58 AM My set shut off and the stand by light started flashing 6 times. I replaced the lamp, however, the problem still exist. What do I need to do at this point? This is a 2004 version. Please help:(

amburan 03-20-10, 11:22 PM I did the same thing.. Ordered my new bulb.. spent $100.00 for the OSRAM bulb.. The day I put it in the picture was great and I felt back what a great TV. After the next two day, the blue color appeared in a broader range and a bigger cloud.... Playing with Vivid color takes the color little bit, but still looks as if I am watching in a 1980 TV with a blue cover on it....

What kind of prices? Were they a good deal?
amburan 03-27-10, 01:54 AM Hi egruber,
I was away on a business trip....
Here is the details. I am planning to pull either 52EX701 or NX700
Kdl52ex701 $1150.00 Retail price in Costco for $1999.00, other places 2399
kdl55hx701 $1150.00 Retail price in BB around $2699
kdl46nx700 $760.00 Internet price around $1600
kdl46z5100 $640.00 Internet price around $1300
uh oh... I noticed a slight blueish discoloration at the bottom of the set, left of center (the area were the lamp is).
It's not noticeable except in the bright scenes of a black and white show or movie. I think it appeared right after messing with the Harmony remote and turning the set back on during cool-down after it was accidentally turned off.
To those that experienced this - how long did it take for the blue to "grow"? Does it gradually get worse over time, or quickly getting worse within a couple days?
If it doesn't get any worse, I'm ok living with it as it currently is. But I have a feeling it will get worse and I'll be contacting JJB220 for some repair service.
Why won't anyone put the thermal fuse part number on this thread? I need the thermal fuse part number Please I cant watch anything!!
Thanks,
JG
Obviously too late to help you, but I just found it on another site (http://greginthedesert.net/2008/05/resolving-the-6x-red-blinking-light-of-death-on-my-sony-tv-with-pictures/). Sony Part 191002393. You can search for it on the Sony Parts & Accessories (https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/index.jsp) site.
I've had the blue haze/fog/blob for years but didn't find out about the extended warranty until after it had expired. I highly recommend the rebuild service of jjb220 (just go back a few posts and you'll find him). I had the optical block of my 55XS955 rebuilt and it works great. Since you don't live near him you'll need to take the optical block out yourself and send it. It wasn't hard. Just take pictures along the way so you know how it goes back. Here's a link showing how:

tman2576 04-21-10, 06:15 PM Great site and great info!!! Help me out here guys. My Sony KDF55WF655 started showing optical block failure signs. Thanks to this site and others, I learned about the discounts Sony was offering to help mitigate my dissatisfaction. I called Sony and was offered discounts on three EX models and a KDL55HX701 for $950. I had absolutely no interest in the EX models so I opted for the KDL55HX701, gave them my credit card number and went through the process of removing the tag, taking the photos and sending it to Sony in Fort Myers Florida. This was two weeks ago. My USPS return slip shows that they received my photos and tag on 04-14-10. Today I get a call from Sony – Fort Myers and I was told that HX (or NX for that matter) is no longer available and I still had my choice of the three EX models. I told the caller that the HX models were clearly still available as I could order them on-line from several different retailers. I was told that while still available for resale, the HX was now not available as part of the replacement program. The guy was apologetic and sounded like he was in a tight spot but would (or could) not do anything to satisfy me. I asked to speak to his supervisor and he stated that there was nothing a supervisor could do and he would not provide a supervisor name for me. The call ended with me asking him to have a supervisor call me back and he stated that there were no guarantees that this would happen.
Here are my questions. Has anyone else run into this after the offer has already been made by Sony? Has anyone been offered or received an HX or NX model in the last week or so? The paranoid side of me is sensing the ol’ bait-N-switch. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!!!
Tman
Motherof3 04-22-10, 02:27 AM Yes, I got the same phone call today to inform me that the KDL55HX701 is no longer being offered after doing all the paper work a week ago. We did the same thing by asking for a supervisor and being told no, that there was nothing they could do.
What ticks me off the most is that we are not the type of family that just has $950+tax laying around. We would be happy if they would just fix the optical block problem for free, but I just got off the phone earlier with the local tv repair service who said it would be a good $1000 to replace the optical block and no guarantees on how long it will last. Our tv is getting really bad with the blue stars and cloud.
The one thing I was a little excited about was getting the Wi-Fi ready tv in the KDL55HX701, but now it not available.
They are now offering the KDL52EX701 for the same price but disappointed it will be a smaller tv, but it does have a 3 year warranty. Or the KDL55EX501 for $750.00, which is not internet ready and has a 3 year warranty. So confused on which one to choose. We just don't have this kind of many to just throw around and buy another new tv in 4 years, or be disappointed in our choice.
Anyone have suggestions?
Eddiesalsa 04-22-10, 03:30 PM Good afternoon everyone...
I have the KDF60WF655 unit with the defective Optical Block.... I tried and pleaded with them on seeing if they offer a 60in in the replacment program but after 5 calls and 3 emails no luck at all... here is the offer they provided me with:
KDL52EX700 $725.00 + local sales tax
KDL55EX500 $625.00 + local sales tax
KDL46EX700 $400.00 + local sales tax
KDL46V5100 $280.00 + local sales tax
After speaking with the rep in stating that there are other offers for the same model at a lower price he indicated that they take several factors into consideration when the offer the discounted price such as which model you currently have that is being replaced.
I do know that the XBR was more $$$ than the WF series so I guess you all that have the very nice low discounted price congrats... I will have to choke it up and settle for the $625.00 (KDL55EX500) as this being the best offer for the size in my paticular situation...
It totally sucks that they don't offer the 60in units in this program.... I had to decide within 1 week or the offer expires for my case #....
Motherof3 04-22-10, 07:08 PM Ok, so I've been down at Best Buy for 3 hours. Not taking this replacement tv lightly, but only have 5 more days to decide.
Just for your info...the replacement KDL55EX501/500 is an LCD.
The KDL52EX700/701 is an LED *(new technology that is wonderful). EVERYONE says to take the LED, even though it is a few inches smaller, the picture quality is far better. Plus, it is supposed to last longer.
I think you should go down and view these 2 tv's personally.
Plus, the 52EX701 is internet ready, which is pretty cool, even though we have the PS3 to go through.
Just don't let Sony pull a fast one again. This is going to be the last time I buy Sony.
I've had many people tell me to get this new tv and sell it on ebay and buy the new Samsung. Sony can't beat it with anything they have.
Well, I just learned all this today so please do your homework before you buy from Sony.

They are both LCD TVs. LCD is the display type. LED is the lighting type used in the 700/701. The 500/501 has a CCFL (fluorescent) backlight.
The 700/701 TVs use edge-lit LED technology that has little effect on picture quality. When people talk about LED TVs looking far better than CCFL TVs, they're most often talking about true backlit LED TVs (also called "local-dimming LED", "organic LED" or "dynamic LED"). LED in general is more economic and healthier than CCFL, though.
Motherof3 04-22-10, 08:19 PM Sorry, forgot to add the the LED is more energy sufficient, like 40%, I believe. Another thing to add I thought.
Motherof3 04-22-10, 08:23 PM Thanks Hale!! I'm just learning today all this different stuff and have to take a crash course because they want my choice in less than 7 days total.
So, if you had the choice between the KDL55EX501 or the KDL52EX701, which would you choose?

the 701 has a newer image processor, so it probably does have better picture quality, and it uses less than half the power of the 501. 701 also has more software and network/internet features
for only a $100 difference, I'd go with the 701, too.
PatInTheHat 04-28-10, 01:20 AM Add me to the list of those with the blue blob :( 60XS955. Does anyone know if these offers Sony is giving apply to those in Canada?
Motherof3 05-06-10, 03:15 PM I just received my new Sony KDL52EX701. Lets hope this one will last more than 4 or 5 years. It does have a beautiful picture so far. Love the internet option.
For those of you with the blue blob and stars...call Sony (800) 225-5229...they are not so very nice or apologetic at all. Very cold personalities, I talked to about 10 different people and all are the same. But they at least are offering a big discount. Better than a kick in the butt...I guess. I also recommend trying to get the old one fixed. I'm working with JJB220 to try and get our KDF55 fixed. I know it won't be fixed forever but maybe get a couple more years out of it.
that number doesn't seem to be going into Sony. At least the recorded message doesn't mention I have called Sony. Can someone please verify the number?
doubledsquared 06-06-10, 10:33 PM I had to repalce the optical block on my KDF-55XS955 about 6 months ago.
Now all I get is a flashing light.
Any idea what Sony's policy is for offering a discounted replacement for a set that's no longer operational?

capehoorn 06-19-10, 07:04 PM Can someone tell me if the KDF-55XS955 has a digital tuner for over the air antenna reception, I'm not have any luck trying to figure it out?
egruber 06-19-10, 07:18 PM Yes, it does.
capehoorn 06-19-10, 08:06 PM I am connected to the vhf input jack but I can't figure out how to change the settings to access over air reception. Can someone give me detailed instructions?
HGN2001 06-19-10, 08:15 PM There are two RF (VHF-type) inputs in the rear, one is for Cable, the other for an antenna.
If you're using the cbale input, the TV channel displayed in the upper right will say something like [C4] or [C10.1].
If you're using the antenna input, you'll see only numbers: [10.2] or [27.1].
To switch between the two, use the original remote that came with the set and press the ANT button above and to the right of the CH UP button.
Once you're sure you're in the antenna mode, make sure an antenna is connected and do a channel scan. (Look in MENU > CHANNEL > SCAN to start it.
Once that's done, if you've got strong enough signals, you'll have some digital TV stations to look at, many or at least some in true High Def.

For what it's worth, I just replaced the lamp on my 60XS955 and I feel like I got a whole new TV. The lamp warning light had not come on but after nearly six years of use, the screen had gotten noticeably darker.
Given the optical block issue, I was hesitant to spend the money to replace the lamp, but I decided to go ahead (I bought a Sony OEM XL2200 from Buy.com for $140) and I'm glad I did.
Needless to say, if the optical block gives out tomorrow, replacing the lamp will have been a complete waste of money, but if the optical block holds up and replacing the lamp extends the life of the TV for even just another three years or so, it will have been well worth the expense.
Or you can have the block rebuilt and get another 5 years.
Or you can have the block rebuilt and get another 5 years.
But who could I hire to professionally rebuild the optical block at a reasonable price? Just kidding, just kidding... :) I'm inclined not to have the block rebuilt, but if I change my mind I'll certainly be calling you!
Or you can have the block rebuilt and get another 5 years.
I'm getting close jjb220... my blue is still faint but seems to be spreading... in addition to a blue "halo" area at the bottom (right above the lamp housing), now I'm noticing a faint blue line across the bottom third of the screen. :( It's barely noticeable except in certain scenes, especially in black and white shows/movies (grey scale).
jaydreb 07-06-10, 11:29 AM Optical block problem on my 60XS955 surfaced after about 5.5 years. Now the bottom 10% of the screen is taken up by a long blue bar. I called Sony yesterday to see what they would do about it, and they offered the following replacements:
52NX800 - $975
55EX500 - $625
46NX700 - $560
40EX500 - $75
Now part of me is happy to get anything after 5+ years. Another part of me is disgusted with Sony for selling such a shoddy product. What I would really like is a replacement offer on a 60-INCH set, which is the set I would be replacing.
Has anyone had any success getting Sony to offer a discount on one of their 60" sets? I'd hate to drop down in size - even if it's just 5".

capehoorn 07-11-10, 02:06 PM I have a new antenna on the roof but I can't get this TV to auto tune any of my local channels. I'm connected to the vhf- antenna input on the back and the TV is set to "Antenna" for input when I run an auto-program it doesn't find any channels. I connected a different TV to this same coaxial and it finds the channels just fine. What am I doing wrong?

Nope. That's the price they gave me.
Nope. That's the price they gave me.
Wow. Hmmm... Well in that case, I'd be tempted to take that 40-incher at that price and use it as a second set and then buy a new set for my HT setup.

After JJB220 fixed mine, I'd say it was BETTER than new. It's really worth the money. My picture is better than my friends' new LCDs and Plasmas (IMHO)

Well, that's good to know. Hopefully mine will hold up, but if it doesn't, I'll certainly consider it!
gifty74 07-24-10, 09:50 AM Ok, so I had my basement set up with an AV closet and had a monoprice HDMI switcher in there sending signals to the TV over HDMI. I had a cable box, dvd player, and Appletv. I ended up doing away with the AV closet and moved the components under the TV. Ever since then I cannot get my KDF 55" to see the HDMI from the Appletv. I still have the switcher, but have tried every which way to get it to work including different cables, bypassing the switcher, etc. The cable box and dvd player have great picture and are processed fine by the switcher. For whatever reason I can't get the Appletv to play. I can get component working, and if I take my Appletv upstairs to my Panasonic plasma HDMI works perfectly fine. I'm assuming this is an HDCP issue? Can you reset these settings on the tv? I did a reset on the TV last night, but nothing new. The switcher switches to the Appletv signal just fine, but then on the TV I get blank black screen like it's an HDCP issue. Any ideas? I've tried all different resolutions from the Appletv, and it auto recognizes anyway, so I'm ruling that out.

My blue blob problem isn't getting any better. :( In fact, after the set's been on for an hour or so I can see it in the lower right corner and it's especially noticeable with black and white content. If I'm watching something with a station ID "bug" or letterboxed, the blue discoloration seems to hold that shape too.
I've been in contact with jjb220 about servicing my optical block next week, so I hope I have the same results as donaudio mentioned above. I would really like to have my beloved 60XS955 looking good again! :o
traihan 08-26-10, 04:07 PM I am starting to get the blue tint at the bottom. It started just after changing the lamp.

sawyer1370 08-26-10, 04:36 PM The best route is contact Scott Fuentes at Sony Listens:
sonylistens@am.sony.com
He will give you an Event ID as well.
Tell him your issues and he will give you the list of TV's they will exchange at a discount. Keep your receipt for the new lamp, as they will deduct that off the cost of the exchange site.

I'm also exploring this route. Scott is pretty quick to answer emails, which is cool... but be advised there's some phone calls involved.
I'm debating if I'll be happier with a replacement TV, or having the OB rebuilt and squeezing out another 4-5 years from my current TV (which, other than the blue blob, I'm very happy with) and get whatever new technology is available then. Or switching to plasma sooner/later.

why not do both? sony doesn't want the TV back. you could get your OB fixed, and get another TV. sell the new TV to offset the cost of the fix, or keep both.
sawyer1370 08-29-10, 10:36 PM Drill,
I know I had to go through all of that last week. I ended up deciding to take Sony's offer. I got a fair offer. The thing is if you don't take the offer now, you get nothing later. I didn't want to spend another $600 on a new TV only 4 years after I bought one for over $3000, but I figured I would get more use out of the 2 TV's for $600 (when the old 55WF655 goes, I'll get the OB rebuilt and the kids get that TV), than I would for the $300 to rebuild the OB now.
The kids don't mind the blue-ish picture now, as it isn't all that bad, since it is only cartoons and stuff they watch. I couldn't stand it watching movies and sports. So I figured we all got a little something. Just my situation, good luck making your decision.
I'm getting the 60EX500, which is a GREAT TV from what I have seen of it, and everyone here loves it, so the NFL will look great this season!
Yeah, it was a tough decision... And after taking the OB out I'm not sure I made the right one - it looks like it will be tough to get it back in once it's rebuilt!
But I just bought an Oppo '83, so I wasn't keen on dropping $900 to replace my TV. Also, Sony said the EX500 might be 4 to 6 weeks. Plus I have a center-speaker shelf that fits the 60XS955 perfectly, and no room for a second 60" TV, and don't like trying to sell something so big!
So my OB is boxed up to ship to jjb220, and fingers are crossed he can work his magic and I don't have any problems getting it back in place properly. :o. If it works out well, I'll get another 5 years out of the 955 and then buy a new TV in 2015.
kricker 08-30-10, 06:45 PM I wonder how much longer Sony will keep offering up the "deals" for affected users. My 60xs-955 is still looking great after 6 years. I think I got a new optical
block 3 years ago when I had a stuck pixel. They referred to it as the light engine when Sears replaced it for me. Whenever a new post happens on this thread, it makes me cringe thinking it could happen to me at any time. With my luck it'll happen right now that I've said it is still looking great or worse after Sony decides not to do it anymore.
Treybo_2000 09-03-10, 02:32 AM Hello! KDF-60XS955 owner here with the blue problem. I've been in contact with Sony, largely due to finding both this forum and the help from Steve Linke's page, and they have made me a few different offers - and frankly, I am having a little trouble deciding which way to go. I've done some research online, but was hoping some of you could provide real world opinion, as I haven't the time as a new business owner to go spend a day looking in stores at the various models. Here is what they are offering...
KDL55HX800 $1,285.00 + local sales tax
KDL60EX700 $1,100.00 + local sales tax
KDL52NX800 $975.00 + local sales tax
KDL55EX501 $725.00 + local sales tax
KDL46EX700 $350.00 + local sales tax
KDL40EX500 $75.00 + local sales tax
Only got an offer on the 60" after calling and calmly explaining that I would like an offer of a TV the same size as that I had purchased 4 years prior. Ultimately, the only two that are really an option in my mind after researching are the 55" HX800 or the 60" EX700. I like the NX800, but there is no way I could take an 8" drop in size after 4 years on a 60" and live with myself after making that decision! One thing that appeals to me about the NX and the HX series, though, is the 240hz refresh rate, but I really don't know enough about these LCD's (or are they LED's, I really don't understand that part either?) to know the real difference. Also, the HX is 3d compatible, but I just can't envision my wife and I sitting in our living room all night with glasses on, so that really doesn't factor much, just the 2d capabilities.
Long story short - what would any of you do given these choices? Thanks so much for your input!!
sawyer1370 09-03-10, 05:06 AM I was in the same spot you are 2 weeks ago. After a lot of thought, research and a few visits to BestBuy and other places, I went with the 60EX500. It arrived yesterday. Great TV, the picture is much better than my 55WF655. I didn't like having to spend more money, but I wasn't going to spend any money having it fixed, just to know the problem will happen again.
Good luck!
^^^To follow-up on what sawyer1370 said, I saw the 46EX501 at Best Buy yesterday, and it looks like a very nice improvement in detail and especially black levels over my KDF-60XS955. Plus it would be so nice not having a lamp to replace and a fan turn on when I watch TV.
The EX700 also looked nice (LED I believe, which uses less power, slimmer, and has more internet interactivity), but I think I preferred the picture quality of the EX500. Plus Sony is offering the 60" model of the EX500 to us for under $900... an excellent deal. You might want to contact Sony to see if they'll still offer you this set for $869 plus applicable taxes.
I recommend going to Best Buy or a retail place and look at these TVs to see what you think.
btw, from what I've read, the only difference between the EX500 and 501 is the front bezel has matte plastic at the bottom on the 501, and the 500 has a completely uniform shiny bezel all around.
sawyer1370 09-03-10, 08:51 AM Dave, you didn't go with Sony's offer. Man too bad. I can't wait to play with my new blu-ray this weekend and really see what the TV can do.
Treybo, the EX700 is a great TV. The PQ on it is great. For my needs, I just didn't want to spend the extra money. I spent WWWAAAAAYYYYYYY too much time last week trying to figure out what to do. Now that the TV is here, I'm glad I took Sony up on their offer. but that is just me.
egruber 09-03-10, 10:26 AM I took Sony's offer and started with the 60EX700, but I was not happy with it. I had problems with flashlighting and a blue tint to the screen. Also, the TV did not like my FIOS box and had issues with sound sync. I did like the Internet features, though. I wound up exchanging it for the 60EX500 and I am much happier with it. Some people love the EX700, but not me.
sawyer1370 09-03-10, 11:12 AM egruber, I liked the 500 series better than the 700 series also. For the money I saved, I got the Sony s570 blu-ray, which has all the internet features the 700 series TV has, so I figured I almost got a 2 for 1 deal.
egruber 09-03-10, 12:45 PM I wish I had done that. I first bought the Blu Ray player with BD-Live but no other internet streaming because I knew the TV would have it. Then I swapped out the TV, so I lost out. And Sony won't update the firmware on older Blu Rays to add Netflix, etc. Maybe I'll buy that new Apple TV at some point to get it back.
sawyer1370 09-03-10, 01:25 PM Yea it worked out well for me. The dvd player upstairs in the kids play room is on it's last leg. I had about $180 worth of rewards points on my Discover card, and Sam's club had the S570 (slightly different model number for sam's and has the hdmi cable included). So the blu-ray cost me what it would have been to get the cheapest dvd player to replace the one upstairs. Now all I need to do is get a new N-router and I'm off and running. I can't wait for internet radio and Pandora via my blu-ray, that is all I listen to in the car now!
Amazing how quickly the internet is being integrated into everything now. I can't imagine what is in store in a few years. But that is a topic for a different thread.

See, now you've thrown another TV into the mix!!!! LOL. I wasn't even thinking of the EX500 - so it appears it is a cheaper option than the 700 - but would it be worth it to spend a couple of hundred extra value-wise and get the 700?
Gosh - it is times like these when I wish I kept up with electronics more. I get in the game just long enough to buy one, then I drop out of the loop on them.

Amen. This is how I'm beginning to feel as well. But just as soon as I say the heck with it and pick one quickly, I'll read something that will make me feel like a complete dope for doing so....
Treybo_2000 09-03-10, 05:01 PM I took Sony's offer and started with the 60EX700, but I was not happy with it. I had problems with flashlighting and a blue tint to the screen. Also, the TV did not like my FIOS box and had issues with sound sync. I did like the Internet features, though. I wound up exchanging it for the 60EX500 and I am much happier with it. Some people love the EX700, but not me.
Could you elaborate any more on this? I have no clue what "flashlighting" is. My main focus is finding something with that had the picture of my XS955 prior to going "Smurf" on me - so it sounds as if the EX500 has a better pic? I just want something to deliver great pic quality on my BR and DVD, and also my games, as I am an XBOX and PS3 junkie when I get the time.
sawyer1370 09-03-10, 05:08 PM Read the 60EX500 owners thread here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1227927
It will go into some of what people were seeing. I considered the 700 series first, but after viewing them both, I thought the 500 had a better picture, at least for what I liked. Also, I had a couple sales people tell me it takes the 700 series TV's a month or so to 'break in'. Now I don't know if that is true (it sounded suspicious to me), but that is what I heard.
Also look at the ex700 series owners thread here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1227289&highlight=sony+60ex700
tons of info to consider, but again, most of it is opinion. Either way, they are both great TV's.
would it be worth it to spend a couple of hundred extra value-wise and get the 700?
Your call on that... the 700 has some features you may or may not need like internet streaming from Netflix, YouTube, Amazon movies, etc., and sensors that adjust the picture to the room's light. The 700 also uses LED for back-lights, which I believe uses less power and makes for a slimmer design. egruber mentioned he thought his picture was bluer, which I also noticed at Best Buy. He and others have mentioned "flashlighting" on this set, which is uneven backlighting noticable on blank, black screens. Flashlights are a problem on many LCD screens.
I think Sony's offer for the EX500 is the best deal - when I saw it at Best Buy the screen was noticeably more appealing than the others around it. I'm still very tempted to get it, but I'll probably hold off for plasma or a new technology down the road. :o
I strongly suggest seeing them both in person at a retail store to see which you would want in your home. Keep in mind the EX500 and EX501 are pretty much the same TVs.
Good luck with your choice!

Here is a photo of my EX700. You could only see it in the evening with normal lamp lighting. Remember, Sony said that mine was worse than it should be, but they said ALL LED sets do this to some degree because they only light from the edges. Conventional LCD sets don't do this (or only minimally) because the lighting is spread evenly across the back of the panel.
It does go away if you turn the backlighting all the way off, but I didn't care for the resulting picture.

Wow. That's terrible. I had almost made my mind up to go with the EX700, but now I am wondering if that would be nuts after looking at that. Since they took it back, I'm assuming yours was out of the norm, and they're not supposed to look like that when functioning correctly?
I may just say heck with it and go with the EX500. It will be going in the same slot where my XS955 is, so it's not really like it has to be super thin to fill that hole. Not wall mounting, either, so again not a concern. And as far as Netflix goes, that's what I have my 360 for and from what I gather it is laggy coming from the TV anyway with not great PQ.
egruber 09-03-10, 07:23 PM Again, Sony said mine was worse than the norm...whatever that is. I could have tried an exchange, but it takes two weeks to do it, and I was afraid the replacement would be the same or worse. I think there was a limit to how many times I could ask Sony for a new TV, so I just took the EX500. Some say the edge lighting is tougher with the larger panels, which makes sense. But I couldn't say for sure.
i also am replacing my 60xs955 after it "went all smurf on me" (i like that description). i got sony to offer a 60ex500 and 60ex700 (they originally didn't offer a 60"). i had pretty much decided to get the ex700, but went and looked at both before making the final decision. i personally liked the ex500 picture better. the 700 had a blue tint to dark scenes, and for some reason, i just seemed to like the picture the ex500 CCFL backlighting produced over the ex700 edge-lit LED. but this is all my opinion. others may think differently.
i have not received the TV yet. hopefully it will be here soon. i was hoping to have it before the NFL season started. i sent my serial # sticker in over a week ago, but haven't heard anything. maybe i should call them up and see what's going on.
I became the proud owner of a KDF60XS955 just by hauling it away. It has the infamous blue pixel issue (blue "stars"). Upon disassembly of the light engine, I find the following number on the LCD/prism assembly: 1-788-154-21. Apparently SONY doesn't sell this thing separately...
I disassembled the rest of the optical block, and carefully cleaned the unit. I put it back together, now I have no blue/ yellow haze or blobs, just apparent stuck pixels on the blue LCD.
My question is, does anyone out there have an LCD/prism like this, even one with a bad blue LCD, that I could purchase? I want to do some experimenting, and I need donor prism block to try it on. I looked on flea-Bay and other places; and found nothing. Not even a junker... :(
Thanks.
MyKDF55XS955 09-06-10, 12:00 AM My set shut off and the stand by light started flashing 6 times. I replaced the lamp, however, the problem still exist. What do I need to do at this point? This is a 2004 version. Please help:(
Hi
Did you fix it?. I have the same problem (stand by light flashes 6 times) I am thinking of ordering a thermal fuse and replace by myself. I really appreciate if any one of you can help me in this process. If its difficult I would like to call a technician and fix it.
Thanks,
sawyer1370 09-06-10, 11:50 AM Well I have had my 60EX500 for a few days now, and I have had a chance to try it out. The picture is so much cleaner and crisper than my old 55WF655 it's amazing. I know many people are anti-Sony given the way they have handled the optics block issue, but I can't say it enough how great the picture is of the 500 series TV. If the TV lasts as long as it should (25,0000 hours which is 8-10 years), then I'll be happy.
So we moved the old 55WF655 upstairs yesterday, and the kids watched a movie. Then after the movie was done, the set just shut off, and the standby light flashed, just like blues4life and MyKDF55XS955 described. Funny the timing of that happening.
Does anyone know what the issue is that is causing that?
MyKDF55XS955 09-06-10, 01:34 PM Sorry to hear that sawyer.
I am told if it flashes 6 times its thermal fuse. we had same problem couple of years ago, that time it was under warranty, technician came and replaced the thermal fuse. I had to change the lamp right after he replaced the fuse. Not sure if it was just coincidence. so I am pretty much sure its a problem with thermal fuse. It will be really good if some1 who had replaced thermal fuse can explain us the process. I found the part number for the thermal fuse in this forum and its 6 bucks + S/H.
Thanks,

I did this one myself on my 60XS a couple of years back. Really wasn't much to it, just followed a service bulletin that someone from one of the Sony websites was kind enough to email me. If you'd like, I'd be happy to forward to any of you that need it, as I saved it to a file in my inbox for future use. I'd also recommend ordering an extra fuse or two - I've still got my spare waiting in my owners manual bag, just in case. Leave an email address and I'll send it over ASAP.

Thanks for sharing! Well, I went and checked them out over the weekend - much better than looking at them on my computer screen. I think I've settled on either the EX 500 or 700 over the HX800 - although everyone in the stores I talk to tells me the HX is clearly the better television. I REALLY would like to have the NX 60", but it seems they aren't making that one anymore. That is one sleek TV, but 52" is just out of the question.
One question - I know the 55EX501 comes with a 3 year warranty - does anyone know if this extends to the 60" as well? I know the 700 only comes with 1 year. Still torn between the two - think I'll flip a coin and call it good, lol.

MyKDF55XS955, Sawyer, anyone else interested:
I have a .pdf of the service manual for the 55 and 60XS955 sets. It's about 16MB. I can e-mail it if you want it.
Changing the thermal fuse requires removing the OB and bulb, it seems the bulbs don't like too much jarring around once they get some hours on them.
I an OB replacement in a Hitachi 50" set, it had about 8K on the bulb, I warned the guy it might not survive the OB swap, and it shattered about 2 running hours later.

Not a problem. It's not that bad, just make sure to pay close attention to where everything goes as you take it apart, and it's a super easy deal.
Treybo_2000 09-08-10, 08:20 PM Well, after much ado about nothing as it turns out, I went with the 700 series today. I had been up in arms over whether to go with the 500 or 700 for several days, only to call Sony and find that they no longer are offering the 500 series in a 60". So, for future reference, save yourself time and make sure that the unit you are pondering is even still available! I had already given up on the HX800 as I just couldn't make myself believe I could ever be happy with a 55" knowing darn well I could have gotten a 60" instead, so once the Florida group confirmed to me that the ONLY 60" I could get was the 700, it became an easy sell. Mailed out my sticker and will keep you guys updated as to how it goes. I'm dying to see what the set actually looks like in my home - they always seem to look 1000x better when you get them out of the twitter and glitter of another hundred sets.
i opted for the 60ex500. sent my sticker in 2 weeks ago. they have received the sticker, and my tv is "ordered", but it hasn't shipped yet. i am going to be pissed if it turns out its no longer available and i have to choose again and wait.

How did you find out they had received it? Did you send certified with del confirmation, or do they call or email to let you know when they have gotten it?

They told me last week the 60EX500 would take longer to order.... Around 4 to 6 weeks I think. That's one of the reasons I didn't go for it. I'm surprised Sawyer got his so soon.
sawyer1370 09-09-10, 09:42 AM wow, that sucks. I sent my sticker in certified mail on a exactly 2 weeks ago (on Thursday) and I got the TV exactly 1 week later, delivered to my house. I was very surprised it arrived so fast.
Sorry your situation wasn't as smooth and easy as mine!
i called and they said they got it. they said it usually ships in 2 weeks. but they didn't provide any expected ship date. i sent scott on facebook an email and he said to call the sony # down in florida. not sure why he couldn't just answer in email. kind of scares me ...
ugh ... i called the number scott gave me, and that sony rep said they hadn't received the serial number sticker. even though just 2 days before when i called, the sony rep said they had received it.
anyway, i emailed a copy to them, and i just received an email that said they have the documentation.
through this whole process, scott and most of the phone reps have been ok to deal with. but there are some reps on the phone that have been less than competent. the process itself is kind of painful too. going on amost 2 months now with "smurf TV".
I got my Optical Block back from jjb220, and I forgot how great the 60XS955 looks! I'm tempted to call it "better than new". Even after shopping for replacement TVs, this 2004 model still ranks very high for picture quality.
However, I have to pull the OB back out again because there's a black spec coming from somewhere. :( The speck is only noticeable over solid white or bright scenes, so depending on what I'm watching I only see it about 10 to 15% of the time. You can clearly see it in the attached photo -- the guy is almost pointing at it on the white background. (fwiw, that's a still image from an crappy SD commercial and not indicative of how good the TV looks now.)
I hope it's just a piece of dust on the outside top of the lens from re-installation. Is it ok to blow the OB with a can of compressed air? Also, is it advisable not to touch the lens with anything?
Thanks for any advice anyone who has experienced this can share.
kricker 09-18-10, 09:52 PM I had a small issue like that once. This probably doesn't apply to but, mine was not on the optical block. I actually had a small piece of dust get between the fresnel lens (I think that is the plastic right behind the front screen) and the front screen. I have no idea how. Lightly pressing on the front screen we could see it move ever so slightly. That's how the tech narrowed down where the spot was coming from. We ended up pulling the screens apart ever so slightly and running a new clean swiffer between them to clean it out.
WinstonSmith 09-18-10, 11:24 PM Hello,
I have the KDF-55 Sony TV and love it. Have had it for a little over four years. About a year ago I had to have the light engine repaired (under warranty thank goodness.)
Today when I turned it on I had a ton of flickering. I don't know how to describe it, so I took a video with my cellphone. Here it is:
http://s98.photobucket.com/albums/l247/WinstonSmith84/?action=view¤t=VID_20100918_215615.mp4
After turning my TV off about 7 times, I finally turned it on and the flickering was much less pronounced and it stopped within a few seconds. Now, I'm able to watch it normally.
Any idea what happened? Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

How old is the bulb? Also does it do this on all inputs?
WinstonSmith 09-19-10, 12:22 AM How old is the bulb? Also does it do this on all inputs?
I have never replaced the bulb. Its over 4 years old.
I have an HDMI switcher and it does it on all HDMI inputs.

It doesn't seem like a bulb failing, but depending on use that bulb is probably approaching end of life.
Have you tried by bypassing the switcher?
Cyberfan 09-20-10, 06:57 PM Hi,
Newbie here...
I have read and have done a lot of poking around on the internet and nobody is very forthcoming with where to get parts for optical blocks. I understand that rebuilders want to make their daily-bread... but if somebody wants to undergo the stress of rebuilding their own optical block... H E L P ! ! !

I have the BLUE Haze / Speckles problem. I did notice on a forum page, a mention of a burned-in rectangle image, on the blue filter. I had this rectangle image on mine. They suggested that this may be the problem to the blue blob issue.
I've elected to replace this one filter as my next step and wanted to know if anybody has those filters? If so, where do I go?? or if there is a different filter that the housing could be shaved down to fit... That info would help too.

Treybo_2000 09-22-10, 01:26 AM Well, my new 60EX700 arrived this afternoon, but I have been too busy all day to even open the box. I'm eager to get it out hopefully tomorrow and see how it compares to my XS955. I've got to say, now that there is some finality approaching, I'm going to be sad to see my XS go. Haven't made my mind up to get rid of it or keep it and fix - really don't know where in the world I can cram another 60 incher, but I kind of have a sentimental attachment to the big guy! And, duh - I forgot that I'll need a new TV stand now - guess I'll makeshift with the silver stand from my XS for the time being. I'll have to go on the prowl for a stand soon - too broke to afford the ones I've seen on here in the $800+ range. I'll let you guys know what I think of the new set when I get it up and running.
i finally got my 60ex500 as a replacement for my smurfed 60xs955 yesterday.
it has some major clouding/flashlighting in 3 of the 4 quadrants. i have only noticed it on a black screen, never during playback. i have read that some of that goes away after 10's of hours of use.
its bright, even with backlight turned down to 1. i can definitely tell it shows more detail than my 60x955. but it also shows more mpeg noise. the 60x955 softened up the picture, at the cost of detail, but the picture was definitely less "noisy". it isn't bad on the 60ex500, but i have noticed it.
otherwise it looks good.
fwiw, i put it on the 60xs955 stand. actually it doesn't look too bad. it sits a little low though. the stand has a cavity that the 60xs955 sat down in. i thought about fitting a piece of wood to fill the cavity and make the top of the stand level. the stand is a really nice stand, so i hate to replace it if i can make it work and look ok.

Cyberfan,
The blue speck problem is being caused by bad pixels in the blue LCD panel. You might get lucky and find someone on fleabay that has a light engine that you could pirate parts from.
I fixed my blue speck/ yellow blob problem by getting just the LCD/prism assembly and removing the red panel and installing it in place of the blue one on my old LCD assembly. After spending several hours fixing the resulting convergence issue, I now have a TV I can enjoy watching.

so there is no difference between the 3 panels? i.e. i could cannibalize a friends TV that has the same problem and fix mine? i.e. remove the light engine from both, take out the red panel from his and replace my blue panel with his red panel?
if that's the case, i might try it ... it would be fun :)
...there's a black spec coming from somewhere. :( The speck is only noticeable over solid white or bright scenes, so depending on what I'm watching I only see it about 10 to 15% of the time.
To follow-up on this ^^^ issue, I took the optical block out and it turns out it wasn't the problem! The problem was a speck that appeared on the back mirror in the TV.
I reached up the opening where the OB goes in with a q-tip and rubbed the speck almost gone, but now there's a very slight smudging around the area the speck was. It's not noticeable except on a solid white or bright screen.
Does anyone know a way to safely access the back mirror for cleaning? Because this smudge is virtually unnoticeable, I don't want to risk making it worse. But if anyone knows of an easy and safe way to get back there to clean the mirror, I would love to consider it. Pics would be extra helpful!
Lastly, I fully endorse jjb220 on AVS (John Brenton mentioned on this page (http://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/sonykdf-55wf655opticalblockreplacement)) for his work on rebuilding the optical block in this TV. No more blue blobs, and the color levels and temperature are as good as I've seen. Seriously, the KDF-55/60XS955 is a great looking TV, and it's good to have an option that keep these models in service.

They are electrically the same. During my testing, I swapped the green for blue, blue for red, and red for green. In all cases I had a normal picture (except for convergence, of course) with the dot pattern and "blob" following the bad panel, I therefore conclude the panels are interchangeable. The blue LCD may have different coating to help against U-V light or more heat or whatever, but I cannot prove this. Sony may disagree, but they have to deal with warranties and such, but for us DIY guys, who really cares? I don't think the little LCD cares too much about what color light it plays with...

Get your Phillips screwdriver all warmed up and start removing screws.:) It may be easier to remove the whole screen/back assembly from the base unit, (which is what I do to adjust the convergence) and lay it flat, and then separate the back from the screen, or you can remove just the screen panel.
Removing the front trim panel will expose 9 screws, 2 in each of the 4 oval holes and one in the center. Remove the 2 screws holding the front AV in jacks as well. You will need to move the chassis out of the way to reach 2 screws that secure the front from the inside. You will also need to remove the sub-woofer to get at the 2 on that side. Remove the cover on the lower left corner ( looking at the back of the set) to get at and disconnect the wiring to the front power switch and led board, the speakers, as well as the USB cable that goes to the card reader. Take out all the screws around the perimeter of the back, and carefully remove the screen. If you want remove the whole kit-and-caboodle, just remove the 4 screws along the top of the base, lift off the whole thing, and remove the perimeter screws later.
Treybo_2000 09-29-10, 09:31 PM Well, I've been watching the 60EX700 for about a week now, the only thing I can pick it for, it does have a *very* faint flashlight effect in the lower left corner on solid black screen, but nothing I can;t live with. Picture is awesome, but so was the one on my XS955 - it's hard to believe that these 5 year old tv's can still compete with the new ones today! Still trying to decide what to do with the old mule - I've got it on a dresser in a spare bedroom for the time being. And Drill, I too am using the stand from my old set - I actually just stuck an old wooden cutting board beneath the new tv - it's working fine, lol!
I have KDF-55XS955 and want to remove the silver speaker grills around TV as its too wide to fit on my table. I couldnt find any info if you can remove them. I seem to remeber someone telling me it was possible.

They are not meant to be removed. Someone used a Dremmel type tool to cut the speakers off of the TV and posted pictures much earlier in this thread.

gifty74 10-04-10, 10:46 AM I'm wondering if there's a way to do a hard factory reset on my KDF-55wf655. As noted in earlier unanswered posts, I cannot for the life of me get my Appletv to work over HDMI (works on other TVs, just not on my Sony). Anyway, I've done the reset where you hold down the button on the remote while turning off the power, but I wondered if there was a hard factory reset that would delete any history or anything that might be preventing the Appletv from connecting to the TV. It worked on this same TV for almost a year, but when I moved the components to a different location the Appletv is no longer recognized.
i finally got my 60ex500 as a replacement for my smurfed 60xs955 yesterday....
So I tried calling Sony again today to see if they would offer me a 60" as a replacement for my 60XS955. Sadly no go...
I am seeing a number of fellow RPTV owners getting the 60" as a replacement. I would like to know what works with Sony? Any pointers to help them coax in the right direction would be really helpful. Somehow accepting a 55" to replace my 60" just doesn't sit well.
Any help is appreciated.

i think everyone's initial offer is 55" or less. i think it is crazy that sony doesn't offer a 60" replacement for a 60" TV straight up.
when i got the original offer that maxed out at 55", i sent an email to scott from facebook and very politely explained i had a 60", and i wanted to replace it with a 60". he got a couple of 60" options on my offer ... 60ex700 or a 60ex500.
in my experience, scott did a good job. the phone reps on the other hand ... well, lets just say my interactions with them left quite a lot to be desired. scott probably has more leeway to get things done.

Ditto to what driller said - you need to just speak with the right folks. Make sure you are dealing with the group that works directly with Scott, and not the generic bunch. I, too, was offered a 55" as my biggest choice at first, but very politely replied back to the email to Sarah that 55" was not what I wanted, or I would have purchased one originally. I believe the key is just making sure to be tactful in your request - the folks dedicated to helping us seem to be considerably more reasonable than the overseas folks, but they are human as well, and will respond much better to decency on your part.
The only other thing I can tell you is that you may need to wait just a bit for 60" options to become available. From what I have gathered, if you'll wait just a bit and keep checking back, their offer will change as their inventory fluctuates. For example, I was not given an option of the 60EX500, as they said they were unavailable at the time, only a 60EX700 was an option. As it really didn't matter with me, I opted to go ahead with the 700 series. Be patient and don't accept less than you'll be happy with = it's the TV you'll have to live with, not them. If you need any more help, let me know - I think I still have the contact info saved in my inbox as a CYA.
Egghaus 11-05-10, 11:52 PM Just replaced the original bulb in my 60XS955. Over 5 years and 16000 hours and it was getting pretty dim. Popped a new bulb in and its like a new TV. Sounds like I'm one of the lucky ones.
Egghaus, hopefully your fans are relatively clean. After my new bulb replacement at 5 yrs, within a month the blue blob appeared. When JJB220 reparied my optical block, he found one of my fans completely blocked. I believe the heat build-up from the new bulb fried my LCD.
HDTURBO 11-15-10, 01:51 PM Hi Dave,
Brand new to AVS. You sound extremely knowledgeable. Sony has offered us their initial deal for a replacement KDL. Our set (KF50WE610)
has multiple colored vertical lines on every input screen. Reading that Sony wants pictures and now not sure if this issue qualifies as an Optical Block problem. Any opinions/advice before we get in any deeper with Sony customer service????????
MANY THANKS for any help!!!

Multiple Colored may mean simply unplug the power, wait 5 minutes and then check all sources. Had the same problem a month ago after a momentary power outage.
Blue blotch, blobs or patches is more like the Light Engine.
splatee 11-15-10, 07:42 PM Hello, I am getting ready to clean out the inside of my 60xs955 and was wondering if someone had a service manual they could email me? I tried looking for a free one on the web like I found for my mits wd-6272d but have had no luck. I am not having any issues with it but I would like to get to all the fans and clean them and I guess there is a filter inside by the optical block? Could someone help me out or point me in the right direction? Don't want to tear into it with out one.
Thank you

Hi Lobo (Wolf),
Many thanks for the reply. The simple fix of unplugging the unit worked great the first three times over a 2 month period the colored lines appeared. Now no such luck! Would appreciate any other suggestions or if anyone has an opinion if Sony might still warranty this out if it's technically not a light engine/optical block issue.
swantzilla 11-24-10, 09:59 AM I have been doing some reading on the optical block issues but I have not come across any symptoms like mine (see attached) This was noticed after the set had not been used for approx 3 months. The blue dots are only on the left side of the screen. Optical block or other cause?
I have a Sony KDF-60XS955 that was purchased on 04/23/2005. It now has the blue discoloration with a central oval in the middle of the screen. Is Sony still offering replacement TVs? If so, who do I contact at Sony and what is the best approach to get a replacement?
Thanks!

They replaced my 60xs955 in September with a 60ex500.
AFAIK, they are still doing that. I posted my problem on the "I have a defective Sony TV" facebook page. Scott Fuentes from the Sony listens group monitors that page and he got in touch with me.

Did you have to pay anything to get the new TV? Did you have to return the old one?
steve ans 12-29-10, 10:11 PM If you qualify, you don't have to return your old TV but you do have to send in the serial number sticker on the back of the TV.

Yeah, I qualified over a year ago but at the time they were charging for a replacement set and it wasn't that great of a deal.
I'm just curious if the offer has changed...maybe they are replacing the TV with a new one at no charge? Or a lot less of a charge?
steve ans 12-30-10, 12:13 AM Offers change depending on multiple factors. Some offers are for free refurbs, or deep discounts on new models.
drwtsn32 12-30-10, 04:37 AM Ok, well I'm emailing Sony again per that Facebook page.... I will see if they offer anything better than they did ~2 years go....
steve ans 12-30-10, 08:05 AM Offers are better but do vary. I paid a bit more than some for my KDL-52EX701 but was very appreciative and love my TV.
Thanks for the info!!!
I will contact them via the facebook page.
The menu of choices varies from time to time. I think that the offer Sony makes is based on which TVs have the highest stock levels at their distribution center. The cost seems to vary slightly depending on which model you owned originally, and when you first contact them. It definitely seems to be a highly variable replacement program.
My offers originally ranged from 40" to 55" with costs from free to ~$1200 depending on which model I chose. I negotiated with them and eventually got an offer for a 60" TV that was a little higher than I wanted to pay for replacing a defective TV, but I accepted.
FWIW, I found dealing with Scott from the Sony Listens group to be reasonable and civil. All my dealings with the Sony reps on the phone were the complete opposite ... the phone reps were unreasonable, rude, and they generally came across as uninformed drones reading from a script, and basically unable to help in any way.
drwtsn32 12-31-10, 06:26 PM Sony just called me and made an offer for my 60XS955. Offers are better than they were almost 2 years ago. They offered me three different models: 40", 46", and 60". I am probably going to get the 60" .. too bad it's just the EX500 model instead of the EX700. Oh well. :)
jdpdata 01-10-11, 06:15 PM Hey guys, I have a '04 55xs955 that has bulb went out few months ago. Anyways after reading all the horror stories on this forum about "Blue Blob" problem, I decided just to buy a new replacement LG LED TV. The Sony is sitting in storage now. Nothing wrong with it except it need a new bulb.
I'm contemplating about buying new bulb and reviving the old beast to watch football in the garage. Is it true that many people experienced Blue Blob problem after replacing bulb? Should I even bother to spend the money on new bulb then having a worthless piece of crap to deal with later?

I believe that many have replaced bulbs perhaps multiple times without having the "blue blob" problem. If I've read these threads correctly, it seems that once you HAVE the blue blob problem, replacing the *optical block* seems to only temporarily solve the problem, if at all. Bulb replacement is usually straightforward and a non-event, though you have to be extremely careful not to touch the bulb at all.
I've got the same set you do - it's still in operation daily in our main living area - and I've yet to replace the bulb even once. I do have a spare sitting around awaiting the time when the bulb finally does fail.
No, I'd say go ahead and replace the bulb. They can be found on the Internet for a little more than $100, and you might still get years out of your set. (I'm not sure how durable it'll be in a garage, though.)

OEM replacement bulbs are made by Philips - these are identical to the ones originally installed by SONY. Here's a link to an Amazon seller that includes the housing, meaning that you don't have to handle the bulb.

drwtsn32 01-10-11, 07:56 PM Wow, that's wild that you guys have 5+ years on a single bulb. Have you checked your Lamp Time? I have replaced mine 3 times when they got over 5000 hours. None of the bulbs blew completely but they really start to dim at that point (in my experience). A new bulb is soooo much brighter you'll be stunned.

YES ... changing the bulb is related.
the optical block problem is accelerated by heat. bulbs degrade over time, so the old bulb produces less light and heat than the new bulb will. a new bulb degrades the optical block faster than the old bulb.
when you change the bulb, clean out as much dust you can. clean the fan if you can. make sure the TV is in a well ventilated area. that will extend the life of the optical block as much as possible.
HGN2001 01-10-11, 08:59 PM Our TV has always been in a well-ventilated area. Just before ordering the extra bulb, I did a check of the lamp hours and on-off cycle count. This has to be about four months or so ago, but the totals then were:
5960 hours
3916 cycle counts
We're actually using the set even more now than before, having both retired from our jobs. Heck, the set even survived a 1000 mile move to Florida.
Harry
HGN2001 01-10-11, 09:04 PM One of the reasons I decided to get a replacement bulb to have on hand is that I've noticed that the TV has dimmed - but just slightly and not to the point yet of having a poor picture.
When we first got the set, I always set the picture setting to PRO and had the power saving option activated. Brightness and contrast levels were set around the default value, never more than a point or two higher or lower.
Within the past months, in order to view programs at what I'd consider normal levels, I've had to take off the power-saving options, and turn up brightness and contrast levels to near maximum. But I'm still using the PRO setting.
Harry
HGN2001 01-10-11, 09:06 PM Are their any good guides on how to best clean out the set? Do I just use a vacuum within the bulb-housing? Or are you referring to removing the back and stuff?
I'd rather not disturb too much if I don't have to.

based on anecdotal evidence it is not a question of if your optical block will go bad, just a question of when. the amount of effort you want to exert to delay the inevitable is up to you.
i have read lots of cases (including mine) where the OB goes bad 9-12 months after a lamp change. My TV was getting dimmer exactly like HGN2001 describes. I changed the bulb mid Sep 2009 right before football season (i didn't want the bulb to die in the middle of a game). the bulb had about 6500 hours on it at the time, but was still working. the OB died in Jul 2010.
there is a guide describing how to remove the OB and send it off for repair. i still use my 60xs955 during football season as a second set to display the redzone channel or game mix. i read through the guide, but never went through with the process because the picture is still watchable for my purposes. anyway, the process did not seem too difficult to get access to the OB, fan etc.
if it were me, and i wanted the TV to last as long as possible, i would spend the 30 minutes to take the back off the TV and clean out the dust around the OB and fan.

I'm kinda hesitant buying from that seller. Amazon has only 3 reviews. One of them said bulb blew up after only couple months.
Anyone else have other recommendation for a reputable seller of OEM Phillips bulb?

I've bought a lamp twice from "Gear4Less" on eBay with no problems. They are still on there, but the XL-2200 isn't on eBay at the moment. They do have it via their on-line store here. (http://gear4less.net/store/sony-2200-replacement-lamp-bulb-housing-sony-p-112.html)

I've purchased a bulb from "niosales" on ebay. They currently have an XL2200 with housing, genuine Philips bulb for $119 w/ free shipping. I bought one a couple months ago from him and it works great.
Edit - link removed - guess i can't post tiny url links. :( Oh well, do a search for XL-2200 and you'll find it.

They honestly vary with age of set, lamp replacements, size of TV. Many variables. People who qualify for an offer are given a choice of sets. My TV was a bit higher than average but still about 60% off going retail price at the time. Many variables but they do try to work with you.

My wife and I have been dealing with Sony now for about a month. Here is part of the email they sent and what they are offering us as replacement choices.
Thank you for contacting the Sony Exchange Dept.,
As discussed, we provided you an offer to replace your television.
KDL60EX700 $725.00 + local sales tax
KDL46EX710 $225.00 + local sales tax
KDL40EX500 No Charge
We have been contacted several times on the phone by different people and have also posted on the Facebook page. We have told them that this offer to replace our 60" set with a 40" set at no charge is just not acceptable. I have asked if they would come down a bit more on the 60" and i am willing to pay a bit but they will not budge on any of the discounted prices. At this point we will not be purchasing another sony tv. We have always had good results with previouse products but now they have left a bad taste for me.
Hope other people have better luck.

Good luck bro. Sony really doesnt have to do squat to replace the TV. If you got the EX700 (which is light years ahead of your old tv) you would come out way ahead. You cant get a 2000 tv for 725 dollars anywhere. I had a 50A2000 that failed after 4 years of use but its out of warranty. I am happy that sony is replacing at a discounted rate.

Hope other people have better luck. I second gdog. Why do you feel "entitled" to get a 60" TV free of charge when your TV like so many others failed out of warranty. Name one other TV manufacturer that is offering replacement TVs from free to way below wholesale as an accommodation. Most all early HD technologies failed, either with OB issues, stupid color wheels, picture burn-in issues. Has Samsung offered replacements to their customers who have 2.5-7 year old TVs? How about Panasonic and Mitsubishi? I paid a bit more than you for my KDL-52EX701 and it was a great deal and a nice accommodation. The folks at IHADS banned me for speaking the truth and lied to others saying I was a Sony spy...how stupid...This occurred last April. You will notice that most people who complain there disappear because they have accepted offers and are happy. If you feel that Sony is being unfair, then you can certainly go out and buy a new Samsung, LG, etc and pay retail. I am VERY happy with my new Sony and certainly it was a lot cheaper than going out to buy one at a store.

If you feel that Sony is being unfair, then you can certainly go out and buy a new Samsung, LG, etc and pay retail. I am VERY happy with my new Sony and certainly it was a lot cheaper than going out to buy one at a store.
well I can tell you I sure as hell dont work for sony. I was just trashing them last week when I thought they may NOT replace my tv when it was obviously yellow but I sent additional pics and I am awaiting my ex700. This is a GREAT deal offered by sony and to be honest I dont know any manufacturer of ANY high priced piece of electronics equipment doing anything like this so instead of feeling you are entitled to a free tv(for something you USED for at least 4 years) consider yourself lucky. And if you dont want the free TV send it my way. :)
IamtheWolf 02-20-11, 02:50 PM Thinking of buying new lamp and housing. I'm at 7250 hours on current lamp. Interested in what others have done, and where they've bought from. If you'd rather not post, please send a PM. Thanks.

Be sure to get one with the allen wrench tool... it's easy to do from the front of the TV, and your picture will probably be brighter. You are correct to get the lamp with the housing - a lot of places sell the lamp only and that would be a unnecessary pain.
If memory serves: Pop off the front gray panel that has the words HDTV. There's an access door with a screw lock to access the lamp+housing. It's a matter of loosening the allen screw (it stays on the housing, the screw doesn't fall off), then pull the housing back and slightly up to disconnect and remove. Do that process the other way around for the replacement lamp.
I got mine off eBay from a place called gear4less, but they don't seem to carry the XL-2200 lamp at the moment.
Good luck!
tricksta189 02-21-11, 12:26 AM Our 55sx955 got the blue blob problem awhile ago, called up Sony and they offered us three choices.
KDL-55ex710 - $425
KDL-46nx810 - $610
KDL-40ex500 - Free
We decided to go with the 55ex710, should be here within the next couple of days, according to the tracking information. I know people with different models were being offered the 55ex710 for as low as $100, but $425 is a solid deal. Still very disappointed that our $3,600 television only lasted a little over three years though.

I picked one up from Vann's a couple months ago. It's really easy to do, and I agree with the above comment to get the one with the allen wrench, since the screw is set deep, a standard size allen wrench doesn't really work.
daweeze02 03-08-11, 10:12 AM Here are my offers
KDLE55X710 $425.00 + local sales tax
KDL55HX800 $775.00 + local sales tax
KDL55NX810 $860.00 + local sales tax
KDL46NX810 $610.00 + local sales tax
KDL40EX520 $150.00 + local sales tax
I am going to go with the KDL55X710 and sell my LG 47LH40, I may even make break even or make a little from this deal if I sell the LG for $550, got it for $700 out the door
They honestly vary with age of set, lamp replacements, size of TV. Many variables. People who qualify for an offer are given a choice of sets. My TV was a bit higher than average but still about 60% off going retail price at the time. Many variables but they do try to work with you.
Does anyone know how one qualifies for replacement? What if you are not the original owner but have the original receipt?

I believe they ask for a picture of the problem and the serial number sticker from the back of the set.

jakemir 03-19-11, 08:18 PM Im having an issue with My KDF60XS955. The TV runs for 20-30 seconds and then shuts off. Green light flashes about 30 times and then picture comes back on. I replaced the bulb, but think the ballast is bad.
The XS955 TV uses a 1-468-875-11 ballast, the bulb is an XL2200 at 120 watts. I have a ballast from a KDS60A2000 part number 1-474-012-21. the A2000 bulb is an XL5200 at 150 watts.
Does any one know if I can swap out the XS955 ballast that is not working for the A2000 ballast?
Let me know, Thanks, Jakemir
Long time lurker, finally registered to post about my KDF60XS955.
I was expecting at some point to have my OB fail, and it has started to do just that, the blue blob is spreading, getting worse all the time.
I will likely attempt to take out the OB and send it to JJB200 for repair, but in the meantime, here is the offer I received from Sony. (Bear in mind I`m in Canada):
KDL55EX620 - $375 (plus taxes)
KDL60EX720 - $1700 (plus taxes)
Sent a message to Scott Fuentes on facebook, not sure if he can help me since I`m in Canada.
Will keep you all posted after I connect with Scott.
sawyer1370 03-28-11, 09:34 AM Does anyone have the directions on how to replace your Thermal Fuse? Mine went on my old KDF55, and I want to replace it so the kids can use the TV in their playroom.
thanks in advance!
I contacted Sony about my 60XS955.
I was offered the following
KDL-46BX420 - $150 plus local taxes
KDL-40EX720 - $250 plus local taxes
KDL-55HX800 - $800 plus local taxes
I should have the new 55" in about three weeks. That same tv is sold at Costco for $1500 so I consider it a good deal.
mricher 05-13-11, 03:45 PM I contacted Sony about my faultly 55XS955 and got the following offers:
kdl60ex720 for $1243 + local sales tax
KDL55NX810 $875.00 + local sales tax
KDL46EX720 $375.00 + local sales tax
KDL40EX720 $250.00 + local sales tax
I only have a couple of days left to decide. I don't want the 46 or 40. So I'm between the 60 and 55- slightly different models. Any advice? Any other models I should ask to see if I can get if i'm looking for a 55" TV that's 1080p/240 Hz with wifi?

Just wanted to let everyone know, I contacted Sony Support just now, and they've never heard of "Sony Listens", and there is no replacement program going on. This deal that "Sony Listens" is offering people is a scam.
There is NO such support from Sony called Sony Listens!!!
And AVS needs to be informed of this IMMEDIATELY! Sony Listens is a SCAM!!!
