SonyListens 06-06-11, 11:53 AM @lickalotapus420,
My name is Evelyn from sony electronics the Sonylistens team. I'm not sure what number it is you called and the exact details. But I wanted to let you and other customers know that we are legitimate and we are here to help with. You can do some more research on google and or look for the IHADS page on facebook. I also welcome you to contact us directly at sonylistens@am.sony.com with your questions and concerns. I wish you a nice day!
Thank You,
Evelyn Perez
HappySooner 07-04-11, 10:25 PM Hello and Happy 4th of July. I am a long time lurker and want to thank everyone in advance for any advice they are willing to give me. My Sony KDF-60XS955 has the "Blue Blobs" and is no longer viewable. I contacted Sony Listens and was offered the following:
KDL55EX710 $550.00 + local sales tax
KDL60EX720 $1375.00 + local sales tax
I cannot be out that much money at this time and I would not object to a smaller, free offer. I have noticed an Evelyn Perez with Sony Listens that seems to post on this forum. Should I attempt to contact her? Is she helpful? What do you think are my options? Thank you again...:D
OK,,, So Sony just replaced my KDF55WF655 through there Sony Listens Program,, Thank You Sony !!! I am now the owner of a 55 inch kdlEX500,, Very Nice indeed.
MY old TV the KDF 55WF655 was a bad Qblock according to my tv repair guy, I replaced the qblock but the tv still dosnt work right. Change the bulb also didnt help any,, So any Knowledgeable people have thoughts what it could be ??? When you turn the TV on it works for a minute or so then the bulb/picture stops working,,red light flashes and keeps cycling through ,,
Jim Clark 07-24-11, 09:34 AM You guys who expect replacements for your XS series sets are seriously deluded. Sony has been GREAT about offering replacement flat screens at great prices for owners of all their rear projection LCD's.
specialkd24 07-25-11, 09:35 PM I'm in the process of reading back in this thread, so sorry to ask a question that probably been asked.
I actually have a 50WE655 and my original lamp just died tonight after 6.5 years. I'm not sure how many hours, but I feel like a watch a lot of TV.
Where is the absolute best place to get a replacement for a good price? I see the Sony site has it for $200, and I see other sites selling it for $65 (although I read those sites are bad and that they are knock-off bulbs).
Any sites you can recommend?
Thanks.
EDIT: How does this one sound from Ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-XL-2100-XL2100-A1606034B-HOUSING-/320610300783?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa5dcf36f
OR
Should I just buy a geniune Sony part like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/GENUINE-SONY-OEM-XL2100-NEW-LAMP-XL-2100-FULL-WARRANTY-/260820877407?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cba22c05f.

I would not get a cheap bulb. I have heard that cheap bulbs can give off more heat and damage the optical block. In any event, the higher heat from a new bulb may damage the block anyway. At that point you will either have to have it rebuilt, or hope that Sony will still offer a discounted replacement for you.

Thank you. That is what I was thinking, spend the extra money and get the genuine Sony part.
Thanks.

Not sure about your model, but with the XS955 it should include the hex key (allen wrench) to remove and replace the lamp.

specialkd24 07-26-11, 01:09 PM Last question ... from looking at Ebay listings, there are two that sound like original lamps, but I don't know the difference.
http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-XL-2100-XL2100-A1606034B-HOUSING-/320610300783?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa5dcf36f
This one says it is a Osram bulb (with housing) and that it is what is installed in the TV's when they leave the factory.

This one actually shows a picture of a Sony box.
Are they the same thing or not?

Not sure about the first one, but the lamps I replaced had an identical box to the second one, except it was XL2200.

sounds like you have the dreaded optical block problem. almost all Sony rear projection LCD tv's have this problem, and its more common after a bulb change. contact the folks at sony listens (sonylistens@am.sony.com). they can possibly help you with a discounted or free replacement television. i had the OB problem with my 60xs955, and they helped me out.

Mike,
Sent an email to that address, not sure if you monitor this thread, but I did call Sony and get an offer for a $500+tax 55inch replacement TV. Is that the best I can get given the issue? I have an event# and things already in the system and was going to FedEx out the sheets required, but if there is something better deal-wise, please let me know.
Thanks,
Paul

the offers seem to vary. i don't know what the current offers are like. i had mine replaced over a year ago. some have posted their offers in this thread and other places online. it is probably worthwhile to do a little more research to see if you can find other (especially more recent) offers to compare to your offer.
singitloud 09-30-11, 09:05 AM Time to replace bulb again... $125 plus tax... Oh well, it's a good tv if not too big for my room. I was kinda hoping the tv was going bad so I could get a newer one :-) No one wants to buy a big tv like this anymore.
splinke 10-27-11, 08:02 PM IMPORTANT NOTICE
I maintain the informational web site (https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/) on Sony optical block and related problems with their 2002-2007 rear projection liquid crystal TVs. Sony had been running an "optical block program" for about 1-1/2 years in which owners of these failed TVs received discounts off newer direct-view LCD TVs in exchange for a legal release. This program was abruptly terminated today, and the "I Have A Defective Sony TV" Facebook page, with tens of thousands of customer posts, was turned off.
If you have a pending settlement with Sony for a failed optical block, you should probably try to resolve it quickly, as it is unknown whether Sony will be offering any future program. There is an alternative Facebook page called "I Still Have a Defective Sony TV (https://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Still-Have-a-Defective-Sony-TV/200792536623139)" that can be used for general discussion/complaints.
charleskuhn 12-22-11, 08:27 AM I am having a similar problem. It may stay on fine for days and then the screen will go black while the green light flashes and the set comes back on to resume normal operation. Almost like I pushed the power off and on again. It may happen again in another hour or two.
Yesterday it happened 3 times in a row so I turned it off for 15 minutes and it worked fine for 5 hours.
We had Sony repair the OB 2 years ago and new bulb then.
The red light didn't blink at all during any episode.

Sounds like the bulb to me. Mine behaved similarly before I replaced the bulb.
tbaudoin 12-30-11, 07:21 PM I'm new to the thread. Just wondering if you found the calibration settings you sought? I have had the TV for quite a while (60XS955). If you have some, please send me a copy.
Regards,
T.

this may be a stray comment, but I was once told that, especially after a power interruption, that it can somtimes help to turn on the set properly, turn it off properly, unplug, ground across the plug to discharge static, then plug it in and go... It HAS worked to correct problems on a number of sonys I have owned and even one random brand a friend owned. I will keep this in my bag of tricks. Once it works, you will be baffled (or not):O)
charleskuhn 02-11-12, 03:12 PM New bulb. No problem since.
Salty Gator 02-22-12, 06:03 PM Newbie here. I really appreciate all of the good information that members have taken the time to post. Wish I would have found the site a few years ago. My 55XS955 has had a blue blob for about 2 years. It was initially a small blob in the right lower corner with some additional scattered blue spots. It has grown and is now intolerable. The bulb went out 6 months ago and it has become much larger since the replacement. It looks like I may have procrastinated too long with regards to any Sony discounts.
Has anyone had experience contacting Sony recently?
For those who have gone the DIY route with a refurbished OB: How long did the job take and how long were you without your TV?
It is kind of funny that the 1996 Trinitron that this set replaced is still working fine.

I think my OB was gone for about two weeks, give or take a few days. And I think I remember the tech was upfront that he had a couple things to do before he could get to mine, he was pretty busy at the time. But the process was smooth and there was no surprises from his end.
I still think this is a great-looking TV.
Salty Gator 02-23-12, 11:34 AM Thanks. How long did the job take you? No doubt that you are technically more proficient than me but I'd like to have a general idea.

Oh, I'm completely clueless how to do do this. :p
I just removed the optical block and shipped it to jjb220 here on AVS (John Breton) to fix it. I don't know if he still does these repairs, but you can find info about him on this page. (http://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/sonykdf-55wf655opticalblockreplacement)
