Now tell me how anyone is going to make an HD copy using component? Those decks were $5K when they were sold. This just shows how ignorant the folks at the helm are. I suspect some copy protection company sold them that idea. What the threat is that if you have a QAM tuner on your computer you tune in an OnDemand stream and record it. But then you are getting an inferior stream to what you'd find on an HD-DVD or BluRay disk. But then this is the company that took a poll of its staff to see if they preferred OAR or cropped movies in HD. Go figure.
Even if you could, is it any different than the HD content they broadcast on the regular channel that we can get over component?
Marcus Carr 01-07-08, 06:45 PM Found some programs from WE in the HD section. (Future channel?)
Phosphene 01-08-08, 02:18 AM Missing HBO HD on demand content in the northern suburbs of chicago as well, in fact thats what I came here to check. The selection always seemed rather poor when I checked anyway but thats really disappointing...guess I'll switch over to Showtime if they don't put it back up soon.
It returned here with Dreamgirls and Inside Man, which is also under Cinemax.
I checked last night and HBO HD On Demand was still missing...can anyone else confirm that it's back?

I know you want someone else to confirm it's back, but it must be regional. It WAS gone here for a few days, but it did return recently. I have no idea if it's going to grow, shrink, or disappear.
Phosphene 01-08-08, 02:53 PM I took a peak at showtime HD on demand offerings last night and they seemed pretty bare too. I seem to remember them having alot more a few weeks ago.
Wish they would start offering some better free movies. Sometimes theres a gem to catch but its rare.
foladar 01-12-08, 03:21 AM We lost HBO&SHO HD here in south Miami, too. We for some reason didn't have any other HD ondemands except those two, but even those are gone now.

HBO HD on demand is gone in Atlanta as well. I actually called them up about it and the lady said "well it should be there" and then i said, well its not, so please remove it from my subscription. I was not impressed with HBO's HD on demand selection even when it was available, having it gone makes it worthless to me.

circumstances 06-04-08, 06:23 PM A few weeks ago I started watching the John Adams mini-series in HD using on demand. Monday I went to on demand to finish watching, and there is no HBO content in HD at all. If you go to HD on demand, then click "premium channels," HBO isn't even listed.
I went online to comcast live chat with customer service, and the woman said "it is a known problem that has been reported in your area, we're working on it, but there is no estimated time for service restoration."
Now it's two days later, and still nothing. I'm in the Fort Lauderdale area. Annoying.

is this not a current issue for anybody else?
yes and no. I know what you're saying and understand how it could happen, but don't see it as a major issue. At least here, they put something like "ends 6/01" next to the titles about a week before a program goes away. So if you're into a show and that happens, you have to either catch up or find them live to DVR.
On a side note, there are articles you can find online about this... HBO has had cold feet all along about offering HD On Demand. So far they've only offered a few things (Justin Timberlake concert, final season of The Sopranos, John Adams... maybe I'm forgetting something else) in HD On Demand. Once the window closed on those things, the HBO section always goes away. I did read somewhere that they are going to do a more perminant HD On Demand offering in the near future... but no details yet. Showtime and Starz! just increased their HD considerably though, so that should help move things forward.
The bottom line is that awhile back HBO removed all their HD content from On Demand – across the board. All providers!
I did notice after that, that John Adams showed up (on Comcast anyway, for some unknown reason). But as you say, it is now gone.
Bye, bye!
As jeff28 says maybe Showtime and Starz will prod them into doing more!
jrcorwin 06-07-08, 07:04 PM I'm in Comcast country...country that was formerly Insight country. We do not have all the HD channels that are offered by Comcast locally...yet. Also...
We have absolutely no HD On Demand at all. Only SD. I've asked how long it will be and they have no idea.

thanks. i must be going nuts then. i don't use on demand all that often, but i could swear that every time i checked there were always a few token HBO movies in HD, some specials in HD, and going back a ways - entourage episodes in HD, flight of the conchords episodes in HD, the sopranos, rome, deadwood, etc. etc. all in HD. and more recently that john adams miniseries. sure, they always had an "end date" on the older episodes.
only in the last week is HBO not listed under HD on demand/premium channels. gone. my concern was that there was comcast on demand HBO in HD content, but that i was no longer getting it for some odd reason (despite the fact that i pay for HBO every month).
so, is anybody currently receiving any HBO in HD on demand? if anyone is getting it, we should all be getting it. no? why would it fluctuate from area to area?

Anyone know who I need to contact to get them back. I agree that they weren't the best ones out of the ones from the low quality ones available. But, at least they were there; and, after all, I did pay for them. At least, thats what I thought was included in the package; and, a major selling point.
I had actually sent a couple of emails to HowardTV's website asking for more HD content in the past year. I never received a reply back. But, a week after my last message to them, they completely disappeared from the HD ONDemand>Premium Channels>Howard TV. Or Premium Channels>Howard TV>HD Clip of the Week sections. Nice.

Is Comcrap ever going to be competitive with DirecTV's fighting events? I am paying more than DirecTV customers which comcast has less picture quality and completely no HD PPV live fighting events. I'm not even talking about Sunday Ticket stuff. It's pretty lame that I have to watch all the fights at my brother's home who has DirecTV. I pay him to order the fights for my family to come over and watch (UFC, boxing, etc). I also watched the Affliction fight on SpikeTV HD over at their house too, but it's not going to be free next time.
DirecTV should have a commercial showing Comcast customers going over to DirecTV people's homes to watch high quality un-recompressed channels and PPV/channels that dont exist on Comcast.

This announcement also marks a major milestone for Project Infinity, Comcast's vision to give consumers the ability to watch any movie, television show, user generated content or other video that a producer wants to make available On Demand.
"Consumers can't get enough HD, so we're now offering over a thousand HD choices, five times more than last year. However, it's not just about HD volume, but about having the highest-quality content consumers really want, whether they want to watch live or on their schedule," said Derek Harrar, General Manager and Senior Vice President of Video Services for Comcast. "With the best HD movies, top-rated HD shows and the hottest HD music all On Demand ... we're delivering the future of HD television, today."
HD Explosion
With the availability of more than 1,000 HD choices, the company strengthens its industry-leading position of providing more choices on TV than anyone else, feeding the insatiable appetite consumers have for HD content. Recent HD trends include:
-- The proportion of viewing time spent with HD has increased nearly 50 percent in four years.(1)
-- Over the next three years, the total number of HD households receiving HD service is expected to increase by 90 percent or 53 million households.(2)
-- Of homes with HD cable, 27 percent now have two or more HD sets hooked up to cable HD.(3)
With 1,000 HD choices, Comcast is delivering the HD programming that aligns with what consumers want to watch and how they want to watch it, for example:
-- live HD sporting events through all of the major local broadcasters, Comcast SportsNet, ESPN and ESPN2, TBS, TNT, Versus, etc.;
-- more than 200 HD movies from top movie providers; supporting recent findings that in spite of how many HD movies are already out there in HD, 65 percent of HD viewers want more;(4)
-- nearly 300 television shows including highly acclaimed television series like Mad Men, Weeds and the CSI series, available on linear and on HD On Demand the day after they air; and
-- hundreds of music offerings in the music category, which is one of the most popular categories currently On Demand.
Mirroring Comcast's content strategy, a recent independent study outlined that HD viewers listed their favorite things to watch in HD as: sports, movies, TV shows and music respectively. And, when asked how they wanted to watch, respondents answered: sports live (78 percent), movies on their schedule (81 percent), TV shows on their schedule (65 percent) and music on their schedule (60 percent).(5)
On Demand Usage Continues to Grow Exponentially
Every month, Comcast customers choose On Demand programming more than 300 million times. Currently Comcast's On Demand lineup offers more than 10,000 selections each month and includes everything from movies, music and top TV shows to the most popular kids, sports and lifestyle programs -- available anytime consumers want to watch them, with the ability to fast forward, rewind and pause selections.

HD Choices Increase Five-Fold This Year
More Comcast propoganda. We still have only 38 linear HD channels and the HD On Demand selections are not enough in terms of volume or quality. Somehow the MTV-HD On Demand offerings of garbage like Flavor Flav and his bimbos doesn't strike me as quality viewing. Counting every single individual program as a "choice" may be mathematically accurate but a better selection of real HD channels would be nice.

Unfortunately, I have seen the PQ on our local Comcast system decline precipitously in recent months. It was never great, but it used to be that the On-Demand HD premium channel movie offerings were higher quality than their linear channel counterparts. Now they are just as bad and both are a big step down from where they were previously. It's to the point where false contouring is a common occurrence even. It stinks

"The service really makes a difference in the quality of the video if you're trying to watch an HD show," said Mitch Bowling, Comcast's senior vice president of online services. "It decreases the buffer time and if you're downloading the video, it's a much faster experience."

Marcus Carr 04-02-09, 06:56 PM Inclusion of Comcast’s On Demand Platform in Time Shifted Ratings Reaffirmed by Nielsen
By: Business Wire
Apr. 2, 2009 04:55 PM
Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq:CMCSA, CMCSK), the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications today announced that the Nielsen Company has conducted a test reaffirming that programming viewed via Comcast’s On Demand platform can be counted in time-shifted measurement, including C3 commercial ratings. The C3 rating measures the average commercial minutes in a program that were viewed live and time-shifted through video on demand or DVR playback in the three days following a linear broadcast.
The test showed the ability of Nielsen’s People Meter to capture the audio watermark for episodes of the second season of AMC’s original series Breaking Bad, viewed On Demand by Comcast digital cable customers. This reaffirmed Nielsen’s ability to identify and include recently telecast cable network programs (viewed On Demand), delivered to Comcast in a manner compliant with Nielsen encoding, and original telecast guidelines. Audio watermarking is the technology used by Nielsen to track and identify programming captured by its People Meter.
"Comcast subscribers watch over 150 million hours of On Demand programming a month, representing an enormous ratings pool that supplements linear viewership," said Derek Harrar, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Video Services for Comcast. "Nielsen's gold standard ratings for timeshifting, including C3, enable our programmer-partners to better monetize content by increasing live viewing ratings with Comcast subscribers 11 billion On Demand views."
“We were eager for Comcast and Nielsen to test with AMC, using our award-winning original series, Breaking Bad,” said Charlie Collier, AMC President and General Manger. “It’s crucial to measure the growing audiences enjoying our content on a delayed-viewing basis.”
Episodes of Breaking Bad are available On Demand to Comcast customers for a full 28 days, in both HD and SD, under “TV Series,” just hours after the original broadcast.
"Nielsen has measured on demand viewing since 2006, subject to standard distribution models and audio watermarking requirements appearing identical to the original cablecast,” said Scott Brown, Senior Vice President Digital Platforms & Media Strategy for Nielsen. “The test with Comcast was an extra step to confirm for them that our audio codes can be successfully detected.”

How about 1000 minus one. NFL has taken the NFL network channel away from Comcast begining May one. Something about paying for sports tier to get it.
