Pinstripes in High-Def

By Anne Becker Broadcasting & Cable

YES, the New York Yankees’ network, will televise seventy 2005 regular-season games in high definition, including Sunday night’s season-opening game against the Red Sox.

The HD lineup includes all 64 home games, five road games versus the Red Sox and one road game against the Mets. The network recently signed carriage agreements for the HD games with Comcast, which will air them on INHD2, and DirecTV.

That still leaves most of New York City without YES’ HD offerings since Manhattan is covered by Time Warner.

The YES Network is available to viewers in New York, Connecticut, parts of New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and airs Yankees, Nets and other pro and college games.

In all fairness, Ken H, DTV TiVo Dealer (Robert) posted basically this information (from a D* source) two weeks ago. This was just the first reporting of that info I have found.
But your Yankees schedule is great!
There are even seven games for us National League fans to watch!

Interesting. Have they changed the # of games played this season? With a 162 game schedule, that results in 81 home games. ;)

Slightly different take, including the added bit of information that deals with other cable carriers are under negotiation. What that means in terms of whether or not Cablevision or TWC will ever see this channel, who can say?

YES Network to Air Yankees in HD
March 31, 2005
By John Consoli

The Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network (YES) will televise 70 New
York Yankees 2005 regular-season games in high definition, beginning
with Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Of the 70 games televised in HD, 64 will be Yankees home games. YES has
signed agreements with cable operator Comcast and satellite provider
DirecTV for carriage of the Yankees HDTV games, and the network is also
negotiating HD carriage deals with other cable operators in the New
York metropolitan area.

For Comcast subscribers, YES HD telecasts will be seen on INHD2
(Channel 207). For DirecTV subscribers, the HD telecasts will be seen
on Channel 94.

Can't wait to see what YES has been cooking up for us. It's nice to be able to see Yanks vs. Soxs games in HD and NOT be blacked out. Hopefully this will also lead to some more RSNs showing some HD baseball on D* this season.

I think those of us outside of the broadcast area will know the answer to this question right about the time the game starts on Sunday...

I would not expect a definitave answer any sooner than that...

For sure, if you are in the yankees home market and get YES in Sd, then you'll also get the HD versions of the games in HD on channel 94.

Nothing official about people not in the Yankee's market being able to see these games

We may not even know then since ESPN has exclusive rights to Sunday night games and they won't be in the EI package. We may have to wait until Tuesday afternoon. I am betting the games are in the package (based on D*'s carrying of some of the HD games in League Pass) and plan to sign up in time to get the Early Bird special after a 3-year hiatus.

At least according to the info in this thread...

I think theres a real good chance it will show up an part of EI package, but I doubt there will be any announcements...

(I guess other person asked the similar question in that closed thread.)

I am in the market of NYC in D*, in the market of Philly in Comcast. I think I can get YES HD in D*, and Philly's games in HD from Comcast.

But, can I get YES HD (INHD2, channel 207) from Comcast?

Thanks.

Just read a posting on the albanyhdtv.com Web site that Time Warner in Albany will be carrying YES HD starting Friday, and in fact the channel is already up and promoting the service. I'm hoping that it's true and it applies to Time Warner throughought all of New York state, me being down in HDTV-started Elmira.

That would be nice, but given the sparsity of the FSN telecasts on the 90's for national carriage, I wouldn't count on it. I know somebody once posted a site that listed the FSN's that may receive some national HD exposure (anyone recall?); at that time FoxSports Bay Area was not among them. Too bad considering almost all the Giants home games and many away games are in HD this year.

Also may be relevant to consider EI's track record when compared to NBA League PASS; namely, no OTA games on EI.

From SKY Report,

NEWS BRIEFS: DirecTV Has Red Sox/Yankees Opener in HD
DirecTV said it will air the 2005 opening-day game between the New York Yankees and World Series Champion Boston Red Sox in high-def format. The April 3 HD telecast on YES Network will be available to DirecTV HD customers in the New York DMA

Obviously the NY area subs will get YES.
As I understand it, and I could be wrong, the MLB EI people with the HD package will also get the games if they are not blacked out by the normal MLB blackout rules.
But, obviously, we shall see.
As I say, I could be wrong -- and I often am.

I'm figuring that the ONLY people who will get to see this game in HD on YES-HD will be those of us in the NYC YES Market. Why? Because isn't that the way that all this PITA HD viewing crap works? Kind of like Mavs games on Channel 95 or 96 being blacked out for those not in the Dallas DMA. And _EVERYONE_ knows that MLB (and to a great extent) the EI package makes this *just* as difficult as they possibly can for their fans.....:D

Also---the Sky Report post RIGHT above yours makes the comment in the last sentence that....The April 3 HD telecast on YES Network will be available to DirecTV HD customers in the New York DMA

Sunday's game is not a national exclusive for ESPN. If it was, the game wouldn't be on YES/NESN. You should have your answer Sunday.

I just had a chance to sit down and watch a Yanks-Tribe ST game I'd Tivo'd from 3/7. Michael Kay (Yankees announcer) commented that the "only way to see the Yanks-Sox game on opening day in the NYC area was on YES". I *guess* I took that to mean that conversely, for those outside the NYC area, YES would be blacked out.

As a general rule, YES is blacked out outside of the NYC DMA. What needs to be answered is whether or not MLB:EI subs will get to see YESHD. What has raised this question is that on D* NBL:LP subs get to see the HD RSN games that are on.

Question that wasnt answered in the original *huge* thread:

Im not officially in the NYC DMA (New Haven county, CT), however I do get YES normally (channel 622).

Does this mean that I will get YES-HD as well? Or will YES-HD be available only to those in the actually NYC DMA, and not the surrounding ones? For local channel purposes, I am not in NYC. But apparently for YES purposes, I am (I have never had a game blacked on on YES since I got D* 2 years ago, but wanted to be sure I will see Sundays game in HD).

Also, anyone happen to know the D* channel for YESHD? I didnt see anything in my guide last night about it.

Thanks!!!

Sorry for the rant, but it will be nice when D* finally adds a HD channel that ALL SUBSCRIBERS can view. Why is D* so obsessed with the NY market? Why are they using precious bandwith on a channel that a fraction of their subs can see? What about national channels (i.e. TNT-HD, ESPN2-HD)? C'mon D*, throw us a frickin' bone here!

I guess this is great news for a Yankee fan living in NY, but once again, D* proves it could care less about the rest of the continental US.

*sigh*

YESHD will not be a 24/7 channel. It will only be lit for 3 or so hours for roughly 70 games over the course of 6 months. YESHD will be no different than the FSN channels in the 90s that show NBA games for a couple hours 3 or 4 times a week.

We're also still waiting to find out if MLB:EI subs will get to see YESHD out of market on D*.

With D*'s current bandwidth situation, I wouldn't expect any national channels until the first 2 spaceway birds are up and running.

If you have been able to watch Yankee games on YES, then you should get YESHD.

From all reports, the game will be on channel 94. I wouldn't expect to see it in the on-screen guide until the channel is lit.

Once the channel is up on the sat, I would think that D* would update the web guide.

Hey, before your head explodes from the swelling;), I beat your post by a few minutes, the one right before yours. At least I waited till the cable systems had their equipment. It was, of course, "known" before that. Also, so far I haven't seen any official announcement from TWC. At last, Comcast and YES finally made their announcement. I agree and I keep msending NESN emails trying to find out what is going on. I had asked Stephanie Campbell befor she left what was up with NESN and she said that they just don't have the room right now and even more disappointing is the fact when they add HD locals the RSN'S won't be included initially but who know maybe that will change. I also know that D* and NESN have had negotiations and Stephany did say NESN is front and center as far as adding it at some point.

I am trying to come up with a total of Yankees games in HD this year. So far, we have 64 home games and 5 road games at Fenway for a total of 69. Assuming there will be games on FOX this year, has there been any word if FOX games will be all HD as the NFL was this year? Leave a few games to ESPN and it seems as if half the season will be in HD. How about WOR? Any word if Yankees home games will be HD on WOR, and if so, will Comcast add their HD channel? At the very least, we will get an improved digital signal. All in all a good season to be a Yankees/HD fan.

Confirmed:

70 games on YESHD
3 games on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball

Unknown:

17 games on UPN9
9 games on FOX

I would imagine that the FOX games will be in HD (I couldn't find any listings that stated it one way or the other).

UPN said no HD for their games, but now that the cat's out of the bag for home games, perhaps the home games on UPN will be in HD.

If UPN decides to change their mind and show the Yankee Games in HD Comcast would have to add it first in the NY DMA which they have not yet done .

NBA League subscribers get to see some some of the HD RSN games, but not most of them. Is that not correct?

Wolfie If you're outside NYC DMA, at minimum you will need the MLB package ($149 for the season). It may be that you will also need the HD package, though I don't believe that's been required for the NFL HD in the past.

Even with both MLB:EI and HD package, you may be SOL if MLB decides to allow YES-HD to only the NY region (possible due to conflict with InHD commitment).

While ESPN2HD and TNTHD may not have HD content 24/7, they are channels that are required to be on 24/7 as per the contracts for those channels.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see those channels and more once the spaceway birds are up and running.

Anyone know if it is decided that YesHD will NOT be proivided with EI, will the station be on a sopt beam to the NYC area? Im am in the NYC area, yet not really there. Wondering if I will not get this channel. Interestingly enough, when the Knicks are shown in HD on 95 or 96 that channel is blocked for me, yet if it is an two random other teams the pic comes through.

It wont be on a spot beam.

Do you have NBA LP now? if so the reason to knicks would be blocked out is because you say you live in their home market, and since the rsn is not the new york one for NBA, it gets blacked out.

I do have NBA league pass, however I get the Knicks games on MSG through my regular programming package. Knicks games are often blacked out on the LP station and only shown on 622.

I think I get what you are saying - when the Knicks are blacked out for me it is becasue DTV is using the RSN of the team the Knicks are playing rather than MSG. Thanks!

I actually didnt know any channels were on spot beam until I noticed my parents who live in NJ got UPN and WB while I didnt. Thi got me worried about Yes being broadcast the same way.....

The FSN for the SF bay area will be showing over 80 Giants and A's games in HD this year, but only on Comcast.

I should say only on Comcast systems that get INHD, which leaves out over 16% of the SF bay area.

Channel 94 now showing Red Sox at Yankees; but will it follow pattern of tonight's Grizzlies at Bucks game on channel 95 tonight? Grizzles at Bucks is blacked out for national purposes. So my guess is that Sunday night, except for NY residents, we will see the message, "Program not available in your area".

Since we can get the Grizzlies/Bucks game in SD with League Pass, anyone know the justification for blacking out the HD telecasts?

Further, in light of the fact that a few RSN games in HD are now being shown nationally in the 90's, how or who decides which HD games to black out?

Maybe its similar to the reason they black out the replays of MLB games even though the live game was shown. I have yet to figure out a good reason for that one either.

Explanations?

I cant figure why D* still holds onto that $300 charge for the HD box- its such a barrier to entry for HD subs. Maybe at this point they dont want many more- just that many more to swap in the coming year.

Maybe they get a clue with the new MPEG4 system and really try to compete with cable and ditch that fee like they have for SD boxes and DVR's. But that wont help anyone for now. Probably not even until the holiday buying season...

This probably has nothing to do with this stuff (as in being left out and not getting to see the game in HD), but I live in eastern Iowa, and when [for example] watching a game between the Yankees-Mariners on EI during the season, and the game is either on YES or FSN NW, I get the game from YES on EI 95% of the time.

Could this help my chances any on Sunday night??

(Too bad the game isn't originating from FSN NE or MSG... I never get blacked out when watching professional game replays [like NBA] on them the next day [MLB & NFL only professional sports packages I sub to on D*]. And now that the MLB is starting up again, I'll probly get to see 80% of all the next-day game replays on; MSG, YES, NESN, & FSN NY, as well as my "local" RSNs; FSN MW, FSN N, & ComCast Chicago)

I would say that by looking at the EI schedule its not gonna help you since the YANKS-RED SOX game is not on the EI schedule at all.

If Sundays game was part of the EI schedule I would think there would be a good chance that all subs would be eligible to watch it in HD on channel 94.

I think the fact that the game is not on the EI says it all for Sunay though; If youre not in the NY DMA you wont get the game anywhere but from ESPN2 SD on Sunday night.

Figures.

I don't have anything against the people in the NYC DMA [or in the Dallas DMA for Mavs games, etc], but what is the real use of using bandwidth for individual games that only a small percentage of America can actually see??

IF ESPN2HD were available, I could see it necessary as those in the NYC DMA would be blacked out, so would need to include them as well, but instead of 100% of D* HD viewers getting to see the game, only those in a specific DMA get it.

I just want to thank you guys for this thread and the info, however contradictory it may be. I live in Montana on a farm and have subscribed to YES and MLEI on D* for years. The Yankees are the only sports team I care about and even with the blackouts, etc. it's been heaven to get most of their games every season.

After reading this thread, I called my D* provider for YES HD info. They told me that they know of no new HD channels that are to be added. I told them about channel 94 and got the typical "You know more than we do" response but they said that if 94 is lit up, I'd get it. Thanks a lot for the comprehensive info, D*! This is what I get for $125 a month.

Thank God for this forum. I'm waiting on pins and needles for Sunday night and/or Tuesday as I suspect a YES blackout on Sunday. Oh, by the way, it'll be the Yanks in six over the Red Sox in the ALCS this October after which they'll demolish whover the NL sends to the World Series.

All MLB is blacked out in the sports pack because you need to purchase MLB EI.

And there is no MLB EI for this game, so anyone not in the Yankees home market has to watch it on ESPN2.

Hmmm isnt that not the case? Havent other chnnels shown up on TW systems but not on others. ESPNHD comes to mind, along with HDNET.

But are you thinking that beacuse it a regional event?

Didnt they just buy the right to show the game? Doesnt national rights mean it must be on a channel that has close to or over 100 million viewers?

Ive never seen an exclusive (baseball) game on ESPN2 ever.

Exclusive nationally, but not in the local market. When have you seen a national ESPN2 game that was also available on another nationally available outlet? How many viewers does ESPN2 have?

ESPN does not hold the national rights to this game. If they did, it would be on ESPN2 in NY & Boston instead of YES/NESN.

This game is like any other MLB game that ESPN/ESPN2 carries that isn't "ESPN Sunday Night Baseball". There are 3 ESPN exclusive Yankees games (2 vs BOS, 1 vs NYM) this year. Tonight is not one of them.

I guess we'll find out what the deal is in about 8 hours...

I explained earlier what I meant by national rights in this case. I meant they own exclusive rights OUTSIDE of the local markets. Maybe I am wrong. When ESPN2 shows a game, can the RSN feed be shown outside of local markets on EI? I guess I assumed that ESPN would have an exclusive outside of the local markets, except on Sunday when they have national exclusive rights.

That game is not even on the EI schedule...

Anyone outside of the NY DMA will not be watching that game in HD tonight..

Has anyone considered this possibility for D*?

If I understand it correctly, D* has already signed an agreement giving them rights to ESPN2HD. So, shouldn't they technically have the right to broadcast this game nationally if they choose (even if they are not broadcasting ESPN2HD 24/7 yet)?

I'm still waiting on the answer on the "YES-HD outside of NYC/MLB EI" question, but it might be possible that the game tonight is not even related to that issue.

when was the last time D* announced anything reguarding new channels with the exclusion of locals.

In case its too hard to figure out Yes-HD has been picked up by D* as a special events programming in the NY DMA market. What that means is If you are in NY Yankees Territory you will get The Yankee Games (71 of them) in HD.

Speculation... you need to learn who's information is real and who know's nothing.

It should be on everyone's guide (do you have a HD receiver?), even showing up on my Hughes non-HD receiever on channel 94. Just because it shows up on the guide, doesn't mean you'll get it. That would also be a nice thing from D*, a way to show only the channels you will receive without having to manually do it with the favorites, similar to E* and the subchannel option.

Straight from the online D* Guide (I'm in the central time zone):

ESPN2 is a different provider than YES. DirecTV can only offer YES in specific areas, e.g. in the Yankee home TV market.

If DirecTV had ESPN2 HD on the air, then you could watch it in HD.

Up in HD in central NY on D* 94. I normally get SD-YES here.

57" display, SD game from 9 feet? Barely watchable. In HD? Sweet.

I not getting it on TWC ch. 708 in Manhattan. It says YES HD but there's just a grey screen. Anyone else?

PQ is outstanding. Anyone know if this is 1080i or 720p?

What is this non-sense, when they zoom in on David Wells it goes to SD. I cannot believe that camera angle is not HD.

Otherwise the HD is crystal clear and great colors.

Rod, that is the REAL travesty in all of this. Women's Basketball instead of the highly anticipated MLB opener between the Unit and David Wells? This game should be on ESPN HD and this thread wouldn't even exist. And no one would have the balls to start one complaining about lack of Female BB.

This PC crap is way out of hand. There's no way Women's BB outdraws this Baseball game.

Picture quality is astounding via TWC Albany. Easily rivals HDNet presetations.

I know I'm a year late but isn't D* out of bandwidth to carry HD channels? So how did they manage to carry the Yes feed? Is it a full time HD channel?

we should all send a congratulations email to ESPN for their wise decision.

I guess they want to sell espn2. dirty move.

other channels are compressed even more while they show the yes game. Since it's only temporary, they can do it, where as they wouldn't do it for a 24/7 channel

Any out of NY DMA DIRECTV HD customers that subscribe to SPORTS Pack get the game on channel 94?

it's only HD on Boston's UPN, not NESN, so it's your cable's fault for not having UPN I guess. You should get an OTA set up.

No, Robert, as many of us had stated earlier when you suggested we would all get the game if we had Sports Pack. YES only can show this game in the NY DMA. ESPN2 has the rights outside of that area, and would never allow YES to be shown outside the NY DMA.
