videobruce 07-13-05, 08:26 AM FYI,
I emailed JVC yesterday and inquired about availability of the service manual for the 61Z7/886 and 70G886 RPTVs.
Their reply is the manual is "currently not available."
RonCCould of told you that. When it is I will have a thread on it.........
The Sammy 'R' model manual isn't out yet either.
jayhawk1 07-13-05, 08:53 AM In case anyone is interested in the Atlanta area....Best Buy at Perimeter has the JVC HD-56G786 up and running. It looks great- picture looks fantastic!
Can anyone tell me the measurements of the 56" sets? I searched here and on TVA site but no joy....
38 1/8 (H) x 52" (W) 17 3/8 (D)
bpdp379 07-13-05, 11:04 AM 38 1/8 (H) x 52" (W) 17 3/8 (D)
Thanks! And do you know if the bottom "foot" can be removed? I need to get a TV no taller than 36" to fit my built-in....
Kid Red 07-13-05, 03:11 PM jayhawk1- thanks for the heads up. Hopefully Florida isn't far behind, I'm getting anxious for mine. Did they have the 52"? Did you see the price for the 56" or the 52"?(Strange that BB's website does not mention the G or even the old JVC models??)
bpdp379- No the stand is part of the cabinet and can not be removed. Not without a saw.
SouthBark 07-13-05, 03:34 PM Local HHGregg in Duluth, GA has the 56G886 on display. They still had the 52Z585. Best Buy and Fry's didn't have the G's yet. I am going to check the HHGregg and Best Buy by my house (Buford, GA) on the way home from work.
The 56 looked good, but I want the black one. There was a T-Storm overhead so the Dish Network HD feed was in and out. :(
jayhawk1 07-13-05, 03:50 PM Kid Red - No sign of the 52" yet. Not sure why it hasn't hit their website yet - I didn't find any JVC's on it yesterday. I believe the price was $XXXX which I assumed was the sug. retail price.
Southbark - Sorry for the confusion, I got my numbers mixed up - Best Buy has the black cabinet 56G786 set up at the Perimeter location.

My local Best Buy in Allentown PA had the 56G786 on display when I was there Sunday......I want the 886 and you want the 786, I know your pain! :(

Funny I noticed the absence of JVC's on BB website also, although they did have the Z575 on their site a few days ago. One of my local BB stores is opening a Magnolia Audio/Video section in their store and the salesman said they will continue carrying the D-ILA models!
bluevelvet86 07-14-05, 01:50 AM Digital Haze - I live in Bethlehem, do you know of any ISF calibrators in the Valley?
x Spades x 07-14-05, 05:27 AM Hey guys,
I've been reading the posts for the last ten pages, and I haven't seen answers to these questions. i know the new model 52s are coming out in a matter of weeks, but I was wondering about performance. I have a Samsung 4677w (that I am returning in a matter of days). The biggest problem was the XBOX video game lag. I am a hardcore gamer (First person shooters), so this split second delay was a HUGE issue. So my question is:
BIGGEST QUESTION:
Does anyone here play video games on these D-ILAS and do you guys get any lag (controller delay)?
The other question I have is:
With the newer models (the larger ones), has the fan noise been reduced any (Maybe it will be fixed on the 52" model)?
And lastly:
Have the grey borders been replaced by the black borders on the larger models (Maybe they will be replaced on the 52" model)?
Thank you for all of your help. Hopefully, I will be a proud owner in a couple of weeks!!
x Spades x 07-14-05, 05:36 AM Ohh... one more question:
Is it possible to have the main screen and PIP in HD simultaneously (Or HD signal on the main page and XBOX in the PIP)?
Shopgirl 07-14-05, 06:14 AM A heads up to those of you waiting for the 52" JVC, TVA has them in stock on their website!!
Spades -
There is a black and a silver model for each size of the new JVCs Model # ending in 786 is black, ending in 886 is Silver.
I don't own the set (yet), but I have never seen any complaint about the JVC and video game lag.
Fan noise is something some complain about, others don't. If you search my post I crossposted someone's solution for reducing fan noise. It's my other post in this thread.
Your question about the PIP, I'm not sure about. Not sure that the new JVC have true PIP, the 575s only had splitscreen I think.
SouthBark 07-14-05, 11:04 AM HHGregg in Buford, GA has the 56G886 on display and the 52G886 is available from their warehouse.
It appears that Best Buy and HHGregg have switched the black/silver TV's this year. Best Buy carried the 1st gen. D-ILA's in silver, now they are carrying black. HHGregg carried the 1st gen. in black, and now they are only stocking silver.
I didn't notice any fan noise. The grey bars are still present. However, using Dish Network on the TV I was able to switch between black and grey bars. OTA and other cable/sat providers may be different.
For me, it's down to the 52G786 and the new Mitsubishi 52727/52728 LCD TV's.
ETphoneHome 07-14-05, 11:59 AM Hey guys. Been here for a long time, just don't post a lot. But....just ordered my HD-56G886 from VANNS for a killer, unheard of price with a 5 yr. warranty (let's just say they price match). Gave them a call and they couldn't be beat. Not sure about posting prices, but I'll let you know when it gets here. WooHoo!!
Hey AOD, I just sent you a PM. Please check and get back to me.
EDIT: I just called Vanns, and they claimed DTV City's price was below their cost on the 52-inch JVC model HD-52G886. The best they could do was $82 higher than DTV (shipped price). Vann's 5yr warranty is $100 higher than DTV City, with the same coverage. So total difference is going to be $182 higher. DTV City is ALSO offering a Free Stand, which I don't need, but could resell on ebay for probably $100+, making the difference close to $300. And DTV has a good return policy on their website.
I've ordered from Vanns before and consider them reputable. But looks like I'm gonna have to go with DTV City on this one. That is, if the wife approves of buying now instead of waiting until Oct/Nov like we talked about.

BB will be carrying the black models!?!? YES!
SouthBark 07-14-05, 01:12 PM BB has the 52G786 and 56G786 in their warehouse in Atlanta, GA. Call your local store and they can check your area.
SouthBark 07-14-05, 01:22 PM Will the RKCILA5B stand work with the 52G786? I want a black swivel stand and the only NEW one is the RKCILAM6 which is mostly silver.
gohawks3 07-14-05, 02:12 PM Ok, I am completely new to the HDTV scene, so please be kind!
I am getting ready to purchase my first HDTV and I have a few questions:
1. What are the differences between these models - 61Z585 and 61Z786? I'm no techie when it comes to this so again, a simple explaination would be great.
2. Is this TV generally seen as being better/worse/same as the Toshiba 62HM94? I know they are two different technologies, but I really like both of them. I really only use my TV for video gaming, DVD's, sporting events, and a few weekly drama's on standard cable.
I recently checked out my two top choices, the 61" JVC DILA and the Toshiba 62HM94, and I noticed that they had very similar picture quality. However, the Toshiba was much cheaper. I have actually found the Toshiba online for approx. $2,300! I also looked at the Samsung DLP models, but was unimpressed when comparing them to these other two. It was much harder to view the Samsung from different angles, both above/below and to the right/left of the screen.
Any information and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
THANKS :)
x Spades x 07-14-05, 02:16 PM Thanks everyone for the replies. The only question I have standing is the HD PIP. I appreciate everyone's help!!!
DIGITAL HAZE 07-14-05, 09:01 PM Digital Haze - I live in Bethlehem, do you know of any ISF calibrators in the Valley?
Sorry, this is my first HDTV and I never looked into calibration. (nor will I as I don't see the need with this TV that I'll be getting, a 56G886 D-ILA) Errrr, I did "calibrate" my old RCA 32" crt, but that was geared towards my video games. :D
I'm sure there must be some around though, there are alot of people here now.
DIGITAL HAZE 07-14-05, 09:05 PM I just got the 56G886 and the side bars are black when viewing TV. But if I view a DVD in 480p 4:3, the bars are gray...Hm...
I upgraded from a HD52Z585, and WOW, what a difference! I am very impressed with the improvement in PQ. Awesome TV, no complaints so far other than the gray bars =/
Thanks for the info! I am doing the same thing you did, (almost) going from a 52Z575 to a 56G886. I am glad to here the PQ is improved, and that's even more impressive considering you moved to a larger tv! As far as DVD's, I've replaced all of my VHS tapes and 4:3 DVD's with widescreen versions, so no problem here. :D
dkennedy 07-15-05, 05:42 AM well DKENNEDY talked me in to it , i have a connection to get jvc service manuals for the 61/70 inch x86 models  i have it posted on ebay. search for "CVJ cervix manual" (yes cervix) you need to check the box that says "search title and description" i have my reasons for hiding this on ebay . i do not want to overwhelm him with orders and get him in trouble with his boss .so im keeping this on the way down low for AVES members only
Dan,
YOUR THE MAN!
I got my JVC 61Z786 service manual yesterday, WOW, so much information to read!
Once again, THANK YOU!

oneballeddie 07-15-05, 10:08 AM Hi. I have had a 61Z786 for about two weeks and don't know if I should send it back or look for another solution. The reason I bought it is simple: in the store between two DLP's it was much brighter. It's a good looking set and the deal was great. The problem is that after watching the set for some time I began to notice the HD picture has momentary spots of blurriness moving around the screen - like the camera is going slightly in and out of focus in different areas of the picture. It moves around the screen, even on still images. It is barely perceptible (wife doesn't see it) but now of course it's all I do see! I wonder if this is something in the JVC image processing or my Cox feed. I have Cox scheduled for service call.
I went back to the store to compare the store model to mine and it has the problem too. Two salesmen at first said they had no idea what I was talking about but after we watched it together - next to the DLP's - they both agreed there was a periodic barely-visible fuzziness rolling in and out of portions of the screen. The DLP's did not do it with the same feed (Dish). This of course leads me to believe it is in the set, not the cable box or transmission.
Yet, I am unsure if this phenomenon exists on DVD's. I really don't see it, but of course at 480i I'm not starting with the same picture quality.
My questions are this:
1. Has anyone else observed this "blurring" effect (JVC said they never heard of it)?
2. Are there any "calibrations" or other experiments I should try before giving up?
I otherwise love everything about this set, but of course, this problem is a showstopper for me. Thanks for any info or thoughts here.

I have the same set you do but I don't see the "blurring" effect you do. You may have a bad set but you stated that you saw it at the store on another set. So it rules out two sets unless the set's aren't configured correctly...
bigstuie 07-15-05, 12:58 PM Digital Haze - I live in Bethlehem, do you know of any ISF calibrators in the Valley?
I live in Allentown (Kuhnsville), have the HD-61Z786, called the JVC service rep located in Windgap, he said, "save your money", these sets do not require calibration. :)
donb1948 07-15-05, 03:30 PM 1. Has anyone else observed this "blurring" effect (JVC said they never heard of it)?
Yes, I've seen it but not with this this model. A while back, I spent a LOT of time looking at JVC D'ILA sets in BB and Sears. At BB they were playing a loop that featured a basketball game. I first noticed the blurring while watching the basketball loop for the umpteenth time. It always occurred at the same places in the loop and only for the basketball game - not any of the other short subjects. I assumed it was a motion related artifact due to either the original recording process or the scaler/deinterlacer algorithm in the set. I saw the same blurring on a different "fast action" scene at Sears which lead me to think it was the scaler/deinterlacer. I do not remember the model number (this was two months) and just chalked the whole thing up as another item to put on the good/bad list for DMDs in general. Probably not related to what you are seeing but just wanted to put the experience forward in case a more knowledgeable person might have useful insight.
oneballeddie 07-15-05, 11:11 PM I agree with you that it could be motion related. I went and studied the store model again today, and the fuzzing is definitely there. I cannot say I saw it on a completely still image in focus, but it's definitely there even on the slightest motion, for example a face shot where subject slightly tilts their head slowly. Or even if subject is still while background is changing. On the other hand, it could be my eyesight or brain waves not being calibrated for D-ILA ...
I was so excited to see the 56" at Best Buy, and ran to the forums to see what people are saying. Looks like people are finding more issues w/ these sets, and still wondering if I should wait til the 1080P sets are out.
Decisions decisions.....
Ok guys, my HD-56G886 arrived today. This thing has a fantastic picture. I am coming from a Samsung HLN5065 and I think the JVC has the edge. The Sammy had to go due to the Rainbows. I couldn't stand the headache and dizziness. I was extremely sensitive to the effect and am having no problems whatsoever on the JVC. I am glad I waited instead on getting the old 52 incher. I just can't say enough that the picture is fantastic. On a scale of 1-10, the HD is a 10+. It is simply stunning. Below are a few pics. If anyone has any questions I will try and answer them.

Nice pictures, looks good! How did you get such a great deal, did they price match or something? And where do you find the warranty terms pertaining to the bulb? I'd like to get the same deal. :)

Price I paid for just the TV was **** OTD. And, yes, there is full bulb replacement coverage for the entire 5 years with the warranty. One more thing. If you get the 5 year warranty,

Welcome to AVS.
Eagles05 07-16-05, 10:27 AM I am in the process of researching as I get ready to take the plunge with a new home theater set-up. I have been lurking on these forums for a while, and have decided to go with the JVC 52Gx86.
I have read that the macroblocking effect is display dependent....so my question is: What upconverting DVD players would you guys that already have a new 52Gx86 or 56Gx86 TV recommend that do not seem to exhibit MB issues? I am currently considering the Panny S97, Samsung HD950 / 941 / 850, Oppo, etc.
Also - I will be using a Comcast HD DVR box, and was curious which outputs you are using. i.e. - DVR to TV via component, DVD using HDMI, etc.
Thanks for your help in advance!
Chris Young 07-16-05, 10:32 AM Hi All,
I Purchased a JVC 52Z585. Got it delivered. Put it on a glass/wood tv stand and hooked it up to my Tivo (Standalone)(S-Video to Component), DVD player (Component Video) and PS2 (Component Video). No matter the source I see what appears to be rain falling from the top of the screen from right to left at an angle of lets say 60 degrees. I first noticed it when setting it up using Avia. Setting the brightness up higher brought it out more. It was very apparent in all colors. Getting the brightness and contrast set correctly I still see it but it comes and goes with picture change.
Also what does CA stand for? I've seen it in the posts on this thead but must have overlooked it's meaning.
Thanks,
Chris

Can you see if the "foot" is removable? I am talking about the small base that the main portion of the set sits on. If so, can you give me the height of the set if the "foot" were removed?

How long did you have the 'N' series Sammy?
Did you see the RBE from day one?
How about the dizzyness, when did that start?

JoeBloggz 07-16-05, 04:26 PM I was in my local BB yesterday inquiring about the new Gx86 models. The salesmen said they nad a 56" for one day and sold it. Also he said, the 56" and 52" models come with a FREE stand from JVC. Now I know some online retailers are offering a free stand(NOT from JVC) with these models, but did not expect B&M types retailers to be offering free stands as well. Does anyone know if this a promotion from JVC or other sellers do this on their own??
the64gto 07-16-05, 04:43 PM I have been tracking my 52g and as of 5:30 am today it is in town. Expect delivery sometime this monday. It came with the jvc stand, free of charge and no extra $ for shipping. Just hoping it is not DOA....

1. I had my 5065 for about 2 years
2. Yes, pretty much from day one. They seemed to get worse as time went on. Once I noticed them, I pretty much saw them on ALL DLP's.
3. Not so much dizzyness at the start. That slowly came on also. It came to the point where I could not even watch it without some kind of ambient light on in the room.
4. As far as source, I assume you mean 60% DVD, 40% TV
Basically, it came to the point where I couldn't even watch it anymore without taking aspirin. It had to go. If one doesn't see them, more power to you. It did have a great picture, but the price I paid was not worth it. I think my D-ILa has a better picture and I don't have to take aspirin to watch it.

I have the 70G886, and have zero game lag. Outstanding set for gaming.
I never hear the fan until I have turned off my audio system, but then I do have it cranked most of the time. You may be able to hear the fan if you use only the internal speakers at low volume. I think that complaints about fan noise have been greatly exaggerated. All of these sets with high intensity bulbs have fan noise you can hear when you have the volume very low.
The grey border shows up on 480i and 480p material that is not 16x9. My direcTV box allows me to choose border color when I output at 720 and 1080i. I know that the DishNet box allows the choice on all formats. Used to have one.

aod: Nice pics! whats the distance from the edge of the fireplace(thats what it looks like from pic) to the wall? I am trying to fit the 52" in a certain tight spot and was just wondering to give me an idea. The slender cabinet of the JVC allows for a tighter fit, without it looking cramped! Thanks!

Thanks... I just ordered my 52" 886 (ground shipping.. it should be here on wednesday). They mixed the price up with last year's model!!! So, I got the clearance price on the '04 model (z something - just under $2k).
One question though....
Can the tv display the main picture in HD AND the PIP in HD, at the same time?
Can the tv display the main picture in HD AND the PIP in HD, at the same time?
Yes, since it is a side by side PIP. Both pics same size side by side.

Thanks,
Chris
;)
Ok never mind on this problem as I found out it was the DVD Recorder causing the rain effect. Replaced it with a Denon DVD2910 player. This tv now shines and pops its image off the screen.
Also thank you Videobruce for the link.

spikejos63 07-17-05, 02:27 AM I was in my local BB yesterday inquiring about the new Gx86 models.
JoeBloggs, I just purchased a JVC 56" online and it came with a free stand from JVC, but NOT the swivel stand that you usually see advertised with these TV's. It is a different one that doesn't look as nice as the swivel stand.
I inquired about paying the difference to get the swivel stand, but the rep told me that it is a JVC promotion and they won't allow a trade out.
videobruce 07-17-05, 09:43 AM Not so much dizzyness at the start. That slowly came on also. It came to the point where I could not even watch it without some kind of ambient light on in the room. Do you get motion sickness also (wondering if there is a connection)? You will need the ambient light with the JVC! As far as source, I assume you mean 60% DVD, 40% TV What type of 'TV' (cable, satellite. SD or HD)?I think my D-ILa has a better picture In what areas? Some have complained about noise in dark areas (other than SD analog noise).

Bruce,
No, I do not get motion sickness at all, just the "single-chip-DLP sickness" :). I have watched the JVC in complete darkness and there are no ill effects for me so far. The "TV" would be digital cable with the HD channels included on a Motorola box (although cable card is coming soon). So far I have not seen any noise on these new sets. No noise or black crush at all. The picture is very smooth and I have noticed no transitions at all between shades either. As far as picture quality goes, the DLP did have a very good picture, although I noiticed a slight screen door effect and of course the lag in gaming. The achilles heal of DLP I think is the RBE. I just cannot watch a DLP anymore. Until they come out with a consumer based 3 chip DLP, I am staying far away. But, I am quite impressed with the D-ILa sets. I was considering RPLCD before this and I am glad I didn't go with one. I thought the blacks on the LCD's were horrible. They have a long way to go in my book. To anyone even considering the D-ILa sets, get one and you to will be impressed. Then again, if anyone is considering a DLP, go check them out in the store first and really look at them. Make sure you aren't effected by the RBE.
Where did you buy from? If you dont mind!
aod: Nice pics! whats the distance from the edge of the fireplace(thats what it looks like from pic) to the wall? I am trying to fit the 52" in a certain tight spot and was just wondering to give me an idea. The slender cabinet of the JVC allows for a tighter fit, without it looking cramped! Thanks!
Joe,
There is about 3-4 inches on either side. The slender cabinet and bottom speakers make it fit in smaller spaces. Fits perfect.

I have a very tight spot to fit a TV into. I have a fireplace with built in shelves on either side. I had a 44" LG tv for a month and saw that I had room enough for a 50". I'm hoping that the 52" JVC 'G' will fit. I found one yesterday and took the measurements and here they are in the attachment. I'll cut out a pattern from this on wrapping paper and see if it will fit. I have plenty of ventilation space behind and above the unit, but the sides will be tight.

How did you like the 44" LG?
Pros/Cons...
With or without sunglasses. ;) and you don't with this set??
(If I didn't know better I thought KidRed wrote the review. ;) )
I'm just answering your questions and giving my opinion. I in no way gave any kind of full review. Just some initial quick perceptions. I thought you were asking personal questions because you were thinking of getting one of the sets and I was trying to help you, or anyone, out. The LCD thing was just my opinion and nothing more. After all, this is a JVC D-ILa thread. Sheesh, it's no wonder I only made a dozen posts in the last 2+ years. Oh, and I have no idea who KidRed is.
johng565 07-17-05, 11:35 PM How did you like the 44" LG?
Pros/Cons...
I had an 44" LG (RU44-SZ63D) DLP in January. I had read up on HDTV's in various forums and looked at many magazines for several months. The JVC 52" was just too big for my space, but I loved the write ups about them and LCOS. After much scrutinization of all the various specifications of all the brands I bought the LG, well basically because it had an all black cabinet, the only one that had all black besides JVC. My built in cabinets are very dark wood around a dark red brick fireplace, with black VCR/DVD combo, black cable box, black Onkyo Receiver, black Bose speakers, even a black cat on the couch and black sneakers on my footstool, add a TV with a silver cabinet-NO! With a black TV the room looks very mellow, and with the set turned off you didn't even see that it was there, it just blended in.
It looked good in the store and even better at home. Only saw a second of rainbows twice in a month, not bad. The HD channels were awesome, as they probably are on most sets. The black levels were not so good, and that bothered me watching some sci-fi movies with star field backgrounds.
It was the size that mattered most. Coming from a 35" SD tube (black) that measures 21" high and 28" wide, the 44" LG was still only 21"high, and guess what, only 28" wide with SD channels, and I thought, Hey I just paid $2k for this and half the time it's the same size as my old one!!! I didn't like the stretch mode that filled the screen with fat people, and I had an extra 5" of space between the TV and the wall, and I knew I could fit at least a 50" to make me happy. In late January I read about the Las Vegas convention and the coming 1080p sets, so I decided to take back the LG and wait until spring, well late spring, well June, now July/August for the 1080p's.
Today I cut out a cardboard template from my measurements of the 52" G. It's just a tad smaller than the 52" Z, but enough to fit into my cabinet without taking out any wood or drywall.
Now I will wait a few weeks to see first hand a 1080p from somebody, maybe Samsung will have one out, and compare it to the JVC before making up my mind. I really like LCOS better than any 720 DLP, and JVC will not have a 52" 1080, just 56" and up, and that won't fit.
Yesterday I looked at Mitsubishi's new LCD line with a non mirrorlike screen, a first for them. The 52" LCD (WD-52527) is lacking in black levels, but having a nice non-reflected screen and beatuiful dark cabinet will give them consideration by many shoppers. Their new DLP models are coming out soon, and some 1080p's.
Will the JVC 'G' looks as good as a 1080P DLP? That is my final question. I've waited since January, another few weeks won't hurt me.

I was and I am.............The number one complaint about this set is how 'bright' it is. I assumed you knew that (see thread below).
As far as KidRed;

Huh? I'm not the only person who likes this set, though you may find that hard to believe.
As for brightness, yea, it's bright, and? You can turn down the brightness somewhat. I didn't see any other sets that had better blacks except maybe a DLP which gives my wife and I headaches. No, the JVC isn't perfect, doesn't have deep blacks, and? It's still has an awesome picture that many of us like.
Why was my post deleted rather than edited? wtf :(

I'm sure you know this already, but make sure you leave enough room for proper ventilation...the manual has the specs! :)
x Spades x 07-18-05, 08:32 PM just finished hooking up my 52" 886. I watched some HD for about the last half an hour. One thing I can say is that the screen is BRIGHT. I mean... reeeeeaaalll BRIGHT. I had to turn it down some, but it only made a marginal difference. I only sit about six and a half feet away. When the movie showed an outdoor scene, I paused it, turn off my lights, and the room was completely lite (hahaha). Even the back of the set. I'm starting to get a headache though (sigh... what I do for HD and video games).
the PIP is annoying though. Is there anyway to make the "twin" PIP take up the full halves of the screen, rather than two letterbox images?
the dark levels aren't as bad as I thought (although they are not as good as DLPs). The viewing angles are GREAT, especially up/down (that might be because of the brightness.... but then again, I don't care why... hahaha)!!!
thedeskE 07-18-05, 08:47 PM x Spades x
I had my brightness reduced in the service menu by an ISF guy. Looks like the G series is same Ol' for that problem. Mine is a Z (hope it's OK to post here)
He mentioned a policy of really cranking it to max on purpose by JVC. Makes Em Look Good in the bright showrooms.
Old news I guess, but it made me realize I could never get it right for a darker room without the service menu adjustment.
I remember him looking up and talking to me while the numbers scrolled downward on his meter.

That's the truth. My 56G shoots fire out the back!! Well, not really, but it likes and needs a lot of ventilation.
darthrsg 07-19-05, 05:41 PM i am using the hd52z575 with a directivo standard def, over the svideo i got a really pixellated picture, i downgraded to composite and the difference was night and day no more pixelation i believe it to be the comb filter doing the magic
darthrsg 07-19-05, 05:43 PM This is for those people out there using the x86 with DirecTV. In general, how would you rate your picture quality? I am somewhat disappointed with my pq (color banding being the main issue) and I wanted to find out from those that have good -> great pq, which type of DSS receiver are you using? What connection - S-Video, Component, etc.?
I'm trying to decide whether or not to upgrade my DSS receiver (currently using a Hughes SD HBD) and to find out what models are the best or at least above average.
Anyone?
try the composite connection, it did wonders for me and my directivo standard def, no pixelation, the hd52z575 rules
I just got my new JVC 52G786 in this monday (7-18-05). I've hooked up most of the connections, but when I came to disabling the speakers on the TV itself, I was baffled. There's the menu option to turn off speaker output. I turn it off, but the TV speakers still output sound. Even if I mute the TV, it still outputs sound on the TV speakers. I know the mute is doing something because it says it's muted, and then the closed captioning starts, but the TV speakers still output sound.
What I'm doing for right now is setting the volume to 0 which has the effect of no sound from the TV speakers, but that just doesn't seem to be the correct way for the TV to work.
Anyone have any ideas of what might be wrong? Do I need a JVC tech to look at it, or am I missing something?

are you using an audio/video reciever? if not my guess is gonna be the auto fixed option in the sound menu page try it out. i dont use the speakers on my set, but the fixed or variable output settings might get you started.

Yeah, I have it hooked up to a receiver. I've tried it with both fixed and variable volume without any difference in terms of the TV speakers. It does affect the receiver volume. If I mute it with it on variable, it will mute the sound going to the receiver. But it will keep outputting sound to the TV speakers. Very strange.
Maybe there's some service menu option that is set wrong? Does anyone know how to decipher the service menu codes?

darthrsg 07-20-05, 03:52 AM My guess is those who complain about fan noise don't have a DVR, a Tivo, or large av rack with fans installed. I don't even hear the JVC anymore with the other fans going. I'll admit it was loud at first with no other units with fans, but I knew and prepared for the fan noise. It was there, sure, but a deal breaker? Hardly.
with a tivo and a pc in the same room you cant even hear the set, i hope my fans get no louder though
darthrsg 07-20-05, 04:47 AM i know im new to these forums but im a regular in other forums as a philips direct view owner, i just got this jvc hd52z575 this mother rocks, all the geometry tests on avia and dve are flawless, i was aware of the black level issue before i bought it thanks to you guys here in the forum, i can say that i was almost blinded by this set until i ran avia and dve, i use a pioneer dvd player and all i can say is wow im not going back to the theater for a while(netflix), i know my settings are different from everyone elses but ill post if anyone is interested, i do have a question though? the natural cinema option is available but not selectable the strange thing is that it was the day i got the set, any ideas? i can get in the servie menu but do not know as of yet how to navigate or which settings to get to. is there a service menu map anywhere, i posted my philips service map on another site but i can email it to any who cares, it was definetly a pain to dig up philips stuff but i had that set singing. so any ideas or links? oh yeah ive read a few posts about gaming on these sets and holy s**t the xbox is the king! no lag at all. i will happy to help anyone in anyway i can , i have been lurking in avs forums for while and just registered today there is a wealth of info here so thanks in advance

is there a smart input on that set? i dont have any audio going into my set just video but i remeber in my manual about the smart input , input one i think, correction v1, my manual says if you have a reciever connected turn it on the tv will then detect the signal source automatically, hope this helps.

Yeah. It does have the smart input. I have the smart input option disabled. Here's the connections I have set up currently:
video 1: DVD player via component (no audio connected - digital coax directly to receiver)
video 2: DVD recorder via component (audio connected via 2 RCA cables)
video 3: nothing
video 4: PS2 (no audio connected - optical directly to receiver)
I have the left and right audio monitor outputs connected to my receiver. I know there are two of those outputs. One is only for video 1, and the other is for everything. I have it connected to the "everything" one.
I was just thinking about connecting the output from the TV to my receiver via optical. I need to buy another cable for that. But I can do that to see if it makes any difference. I can also try to disconnect everything to see if I can disable to output. However, you'd think that telling it to turn off the TV speaker outputs would turn off the TV speaker outputs. Other options that aren't selectable all the time are grayed out when appropiate.
BTW, if I turn on the "TV speaker input for center channel" (I forget the name of the option exactly), it will turn off the TV speakers. However, it also stops outputting any sound to my receiver when watching a TV channel or from my DVD recorder. I don't have anything connected to the center channel input RCA plug in the back of the TV.

I've been checking out this D-ILA sets after hearing about the lag on DLPs. I have a few questions about them.
1. What are the disadvantages of D-ILA, it seems like an amazing deal to be able to get a 52 inch for as much as a 42inch dlp would cost me.
2. Is there videogame lag? I've heard most stems from 480i signals.
3. This might sound wierd, but what's the difference between the Z and G series and 786 and 886? I'm not seeing any noticible difference in price.

im not sure, ill get more time this weekend, but i noticed that my natural cinema option is acting funny i guess, jvc phone support said power down, pull the plug wait 10 minutes to reset the unit, so i did but it remembered everything even the clock, so i tried late last night for a half hour unplugged no dice....
navychop 07-20-05, 05:53 PM "... Z = 2004, G = 2005, G comes with built in HD receiver, Z's did not; ..."
Nope- Z & G denote different cabinets. My 61Z786 is a 2005 model, all black. It has a built in ATSC (DTV) tuner.

Awesome, I'm totally used to fan noise (I sleep with a noisy computer and a fan on) and I can deal with the black levels for lack of lag and the 10 extra inches I'm getting compared to a DLP.

There are more differnces than that. My 56G's fan noise is negligible (to me anyways). JVC may have fixed that. As far as the differences, all the G's (and the 61Z) have the ATSC tuner and CableCARD. They all come with dual IEEE 1394 inputs also. There are some internal differences too. If you have the means, get the new G's. I am pretty sure the prices are lower than last year too. I, personally, don't have a problem with the blacks. hmm
DIGITAL HAZE 07-20-05, 08:18 PM I just got home from ordering my 56G786 from Best Buy. It's coming on Monday.
It also comes with the free stand, and from what I've seen of its specs and a picture of it (I googled the model number of the stand, RK-CPR66) it looks like it will suit my needs just fine. (one of my concerns was if the all black tv would look good on my silver 3 shelf Sanus stand, but now it doesn't matter! :) ) I would have gotten the silver 56G886.....but I would have had to get it online, and I'm too chicken for that. (BB only sells the 786-all black series)
I am returning my 52Z575. It had a black spot (black pixels?) on it and the tech said to just exchange it. But since they ran out of last year models at that store they said just wait for the new ones. I'm glad I did! :)
I checked out the settings they had it set on at Best Buy, and confirmed that it looked (to my eyes) just as good or better than the Mits LCD and Toshiba DLP that were sitting next to it. Actually, the blacks didn't look bad at all either, and the detail was stunning. (it had looked a bit sharper and grainier than my Z575, but I confirmed that it was because they had contrast way up, brightness way down, sharpness way up, and no DNR turned on.)
One of the salesmen said they had hooked Halo 2 up to that TV (and many others) and said this was definately the TV for gaming, but then again, I already knew that. :D
I wish I would have saved the web address, but I was looking up that Genessa chip that the new models have, and he said that the pixel response has come down from 15ms on the old models, to 7ms on the new models. (I don't know how much stock to put into it because I have no idea how reliable the source is, but it sounds reasonable considering JVCs description of the chip) JVC also says it helps smooth out jagged edges, if both of these claims are true, that totally rocks! :D They also have a flesh tone color added to the color management scheme, so that should help the picture too. Of course the built in HDTV reception, cable card, PC input, ect. make the TV that much better. :)
I'll report back with detialed info on my comparisons between the two models next week. I'm very picky and remember all of the settings that I've used and scrutinize the picture. I'll try to see if the new chips reduces jagged edges and the occasional smearing on fast moving 480i sources. As far as black levels go I don't expect much of an improvement there, but I can accept one acchilies heal.
DIGITAL HAZE 07-20-05, 08:32 PM AOD, I have noticed on your pictures that you posted a few days ago that you had a black CRT (32ish"?) sitting on a Sanus tv stand, same model I have. (at least it looked that way to me.) Was that just a "fill in" tv? I'm glad you had that in the background (of one of your box pics) because actually, it didn't look that bad, excepting the TV being small compared to the stand. That one pic actually lead me to buy the 56G786 locally instead of ordering your model online. :p I could sense from that, that it shouldn't look TOO bad. (although I would have gotten the 886 in a heartbeat if I could have found it locally.) Ironically, I got a free stand with the TV anyways that looks like it might be big enough to hold all of my stuff anyways. :D So I'll just have it on the Sanus to start with and see if I like it that way, if not I'll try the JVC stand.
Anyways I dig your TV/stand combination, thanks for the pics and enjoy your TV!

Yes, the Toshiba 36A60 was my fill in tv between the Sammy HLN5065 I sold and the 56G JVC. It looks better in person, sizewise. Man that 36" Toshiba weighs a ton compared to the JVC! Nice choice on your tv by the way. The 56" fit my needs perfectly.
darthrsg 07-21-05, 10:40 AM something i tried on a whim, when experimenting with s video and composite standard def signalsfrom a directivo i noticed better black with composite, so i bought a digital coax line for thirty bucks and used it for the tivo 2 tv line , the blacks are much improved, any one prefer avia or dve to calibrate? and which test patterns?
I tried hooking up the optical sound output from the TV to my receiver. One thing I've noticed with that is that it is always on. Like if I have the TV using the video 1 input from my DVD player, the optical output is still outputting whatever it's tuning in from the TV. Is that how it's supposed to work? I was hoping (thought thinking it wouldn't work) that the optical output would output whatever the TV had as input. It's just weird to watch a movie and be able to have the sound from a TV program coming out of the TV. Anyone else messed with the optical output from the TV yet? This for the 52G786, BTW.
I'm going to try calling their tech support when I get a chance to ask about the TV speaker sound output problem and see if they can solve my problem. I wish their manual said more about what was supposed to happen with all the nifty features they have.
Oh. And I had unplugged the TV from the wall while hooking it up to my UPS. That didn't seem to fix the TV sound output. But it was only unplugged for a few mins. It's really nice now that I can lose power and my TV, receiver, DVD player, etc. keep going :) Nice for those pesky storms.

HEY ASUDEM TRY TURNING ON THE CENTER CHANNEL FEATURE IN THE SET UP MENU I NOTICED IT SHUT OFF MY TV FRONT SPEAKERS
SenorPete 07-21-05, 08:32 PM Hey Folks!
I've been reading threads on AVS for about 9 months now and particularly the ones on the JVC-DILA's. I think the new 56" is the one for me. Just got off the phone with a local BB in and they have a couple in stock. Here's my question...
(and I know we aren't supposed to quote prices but I hope non-specific price differences are OK. If not let me know and I'll edit.)
The BB price is approx $300 more than TVA and about $600 more than DTVcit*. BB does offer the free stand (I'm not sure if the internet sites do) For some reason I have it in my head that I should make a big purchase like this IN PERSON and AT A STORE. But the thought of paying 3 to 6 bills more just for some false peace of mind doesn't seem to make much sense does it? Should I jump into the 21st century and make a (to me) HUGE purchase from a computer monitor or am I justified in wanting to look someone in the eyes and know I can find them if I have a problem or complaint.
Any opinions on this matter are appreciated.

Any opinions on this matter are appreciated. Hindsight is 20/20. There is likely a 90%+ chance that buying online would be a better deal, but IF something happens, (and it sure CAN) you would be much better off dealing with a store. (just return it for a new one) I personally bought mine at BB (coming Monday) because I have had bad experiences with mail order stuff, and I would go through the roof if something happened to my 56" of digital bliss. :D And I am fully aware that I made the more expensive decision, and odds are it won't pay off. Some people like bonds, some like stocks. Ultimately you have to decide which kind of person you are (conservative or aggressive) and go with what you heart tells you. (because your mind will go NUTS trying to figure out which way to go, because of the very real UNCERTAINY, your brain could never tell what decision was best until AFTER the fact.)

SenorPete 07-21-05, 10:07 PM Thanks for the reply DIGITAL HAZE I view things pretty much the way you do. But the more than $600 difference between BB and dtvcity has me considering the risk versus reward factor. I am going to try to do some internet searches for bad experiences/reviews about dtvcity. Perhaps if I can find and read a couple hundred reviews by people slamming them for incompetence I can spend the extra $ with a smile on my face. :D
I will be out of town until Wednesday so I will catch up with everyone's opinions then.
dmestan 07-21-05, 10:45 PM SenorPete - I just got back from BB tonight and got them to commit to giving me 10% off. I told them that CC is offering 10% off on all TVs over $699, so the kid checked with his manager and said I could get the 10% off and also still get the free stand.

DTVCity has a 30 day replacement guarantee, so if your set arrives damaged/non-working, they replace it at no charge to you. You can read it here (http://www.dtvcity.com/30dayreplacement.html).
Also, DTVCity (and most online retailers) offers the free stand from JVC.
I ended up going with DTVCity because of the savings. But I can understand the piece of mind buying local. You just need to decide if that is worth hundreds of dollars to you. To me, it is not.

Help!
I really like the TV but I'm having quality issues with the DVD picture.
I have a Pansonic S97 (which is supposed to be one of the nicer DVD players). It upconverts and does all sorts of cool things (currently have it hooked up with HDMI).
I have spent the last 4 weeks trying to tweak the settings and I'm not getting to where I need to be.
This DVD player is notorious for "macro blocking" - but it apparently it only impacts certain displays.
When I had it hooked to my Hitachi 51" it looked *awesome*. But, with the D-ILA - the macroblocking problem is painful!
So - is anybody using a DVD player that they really like with their D-ILA?
I *know* this is kinduva DVD question - but it is specific to this display so I'm looking for some input from my D-ILA brothers!
Thanks!

if your on avia, you want the left most bar(2 moving bars right?) to disappear and the right one just barely to not visible, for dve there are 3 static bars the outermost are below black make them disappear and the next one in the middle just barely to not visible that might help some i hope...
HEY ASUDEM TRY TURNING ON THE CENTER CHANNEL FEATURE IN THE SET UP MENU I NOTICED IT SHUT OFF MY TV FRONT SPEAKERS
When I turn on the center channel feature, it does indeed turn off the TV speakers. However, it also stops sending sound to my receiver via the audio monitor output. I've not checked if it stops sending the optical output, but that wouldn't work for me, because I have some non-digital sound input going to the TV I need redirected to my receiver.

Here's a pretty naive question for asudem and anyone else with a similar configuration. Why do you have any signals going from the TV/monitor to the receiver? I'm just getting into setting up my HT, and I'm using my pre/pro as the sole switcher. My signals all go from various sources (STB, DVD, VCR) into the receiver and on to the TV functioning solely as a monitor. What is the benefit of having some go through the TV to get to the receiver? The only reason I can think of offhand is that your TV signal is coming OTA and the TV is the only NTSC/ATSC tuner in the system. Is that it?

Yup. Got it in one!
darthrsg 07-22-05, 02:38 PM calibration question i have 52z could someone tell me which pattern from dve or avia to use for black and white level , my biggest question is white level with it all the way up i get no bloom or dome or power supply problems, saying that the 2 little moving white bars should i see them or what? according to joe kane website the right hand bar should disappear to do this i have picture all the way up and its blinding, any ideas? the complaints about the black level on these sets dont bother me with some ambient light in the room they seem fine to me, but most what ive come up with between avia and dve seems to point to the out of box settings bright at 0 picture at 0 color at zero tint at 0 detail at-30 or so, i feel like i am missing something and dont want to kill my bulb or wear shades either....

1. The TVs built in tuner does a better job of decoding NTSC/ATSC than the STB. This is true for me (SA 8300HD) and not uncommon.
2. You get better quality video taking all your sources directly to the TV rather than thru an AV switch.
3. Convenience and cost. If the only input to your amp is the digital from the TV, you don't need an AV receiver (lower cost) and you don't need to switch audio inputs when you switch video inputs.
ETphoneHome 07-22-05, 10:22 PM and when it has to go back for exchange once, then twice, would you say the same thing??
Hmmm ... I don't get it. With the 30 day replacement guarantee, it would be no problem even getting two bad sets. Even if I bought the set local I'd call the store's delivery to pick-up, which really isn't much different than ordering over the internet and scheduling a pick-up.
If I end up with 2 bad JVC TVs, I can tell you I'm gonna be finding a different model TV after the second set, regardless of where I buy. Are you trying to tell me there is some quality control issues with the JVC D-ILA's? That the majority of owners go through more than one set just to get a properly working TV? I don't remember reading anything like that on this forum.

Perhaps not these particular models, but read other threads and you'll see lots of posts on a wide range of brands where people on here have gone through 3, 4, even 5 sets before they got a satisfactory unit.

You can try waving printouts from web sites in their faces, showing several sites offering exact same set for less money, no sales tax, etc. etc. etc. It doesn't hurt to try, most of the big B&M's won't match internet prices, but many managers will "do something" for you (a couple hundred $ gift card, free stand, some free movies or cables or a lamp for the set, you get the idea) to get your business.
Me, I'm working the "we see you in here all the time, what can we sell you today" angle. If I go in every other day and plop down for my lunch hour in front of the set I want, at some point they'll maybe get tired of me and work me a "deal I can't refuse"! Here's hoping...cuz I'm close to pulling the trigger on a set. They do me right and I'll buy a 70"+, where I can only rationally expect to need a 56-62".

That is very difficult to believe, especially since you've been a member since last December! If you have been lurking the JVC threads since December, then you would have to have read many examples of people having problems with this set.
Ask Kid Red how many light engines he has replaced, he is one of the most vocal people on the D-ILA threads.
For that matter, I've personally returned two of the D-ILA's.
I believe that the odds are better than average that you will not make it through the manufacturers warranty period before having a major repair!
Make sure you don't throw that box away, you're probably going to need it! :)

the customer service is a pain in the ass because ive been waiting for a day now and they havent called back for a in home repair service

The only reason I can think of offhand is that your TV signal is coming OTA and the TV is the only NTSC/ATSC tuner in the system. Is that it?
Well, with my system, I have it set up as:
signal 1: tuner (it gets input from the tuner and outputs audio via optical and monitor output)
signal 2: DVD player (video goes to TV and audio goes directly to receiver)
signal 3: DVD recorder/VCR/other (video and audio goes to TV)
signal 4: PS2 (video goes to TV and audio goes to receiver via optical)
signal 5: computer (video goes to TV and audio goes to receiver via optical)
So looking at it, there really is no reason to go to the TV for my setup. I think I did that because previously, I had more inputs going to my TV and then they all went over the monitor output to my receiver. Now with almost all of the inputs being digital, it's not necessary.
However, in general, it would be easier if say you had 3 devices inputting all analog audio to your TV and then having that output to a receiver. Then you could just keep the receiver on one input instead of switching it for each of them like I'm going to have to do now.

chipvideo 07-25-05, 07:33 PM Got my second 61z786 today. On a grey screen I see very noticable lines. ONe of them is diagnal. Looks like this one is going back.
The screen also is tilted slightly.
One hour and I am getting rid of it. This is making me mad. LOL.
videobruce 07-25-05, 11:57 PM On a grey screen I see very noticable lines. ONe of them is diagnal. Can you post any pics?
I just looked at my first 56" G series today and I couldn't find any real CA or excessive purity issues with the set.
Though the time it takes to change inputs and channels is really SLOW ! Two and one half seconds.
DIGITAL HAZE 07-26-05, 12:57 AM I've just spent about 11 hours playing with my new toy. (56G786)
First off....I was surprised at how the settings worked compared to last years models. Dynamic mode is now "high contrast mode", not "super high contrast+brightness mode." Although from looking at various material, it seems either like last years standard or dynamic mode. Theater mode is pretty much the same... Now to the goodies.
Standard mode and game mode seem the same to me. (as eachother I mean, they are way different than last years) Which is a good thing...they seem to provide a great compromise between contrast and black levels. Also, the most shocking thing to me was that artifacting was LESS of a problem on Attack of The Clones (Palpatines office) than it was on my 52", and I am actually sitting CLOSER now! I really had no trouble finding settings that both didn't show bad artifacting, allowed blacks to be black instead of gray, and a little less detail seemed to be lost in the blacks compared to last year.
It seems as if the color is maybe a little deeper than before. It doesn't seem to have as much problems creating RED (see more on that nasty color later. ) as before. Actually I'd say all the colors are improved.
The "smart picture" contrast setting seems to work ok. 90% of the time it doesn't really do anything, but sometimes it does knock the contrast down in really bright scenes. (AOTC in the beginning with all the clouds) ....forgot to mention for some reason it totally tanks theater mode. So in theater mode I set smart picture to off.
I use theater mode for SDTV....everything else I just use standard mode.
My settings: (STANDARD MODE)
0 TINT
2 COLOR
10 CONTRAST
3 BRIGHTNESS
1 SHARPNESS
Everything enabled or on "high". (color temp, dnr, dynamic gamma, smart picture, ect.)
These settings please my eyes anyways.....of course I have more fine tuning to do as I've only watched 2 DVDs.
PC input shard input 3's sound......BOOOOOOO! (I have no VGA cord yet though)
I tried to make 480i on xbox tear, but I couldn't. (turned it back to 480P though really quick)
I have a red spot (about the size of a nat) about 2 pixels in from the right side of the screen, just below center. I can still see the little thing from my 8' sitting distance. Looks almost as if a piece of red clothing got caught under the screen, although I guess it's a stuck pixel or two... I coulda sworn I saw something like that on my old TV but I forget if it was as bad......I knew the set was going back due to that big black spot it had so I didn't really focus on the quality after that.
When I started this Tv up after having it sit inside for an hour, I was staring at about 6 big black splotches under the screen on the left side, but after a couple of hours they went away. :)
Fan noise is slightly quiter, but higher pitched than last years model. (about a draw I would say.) I have it sitting on my Sanus stand for now...it'll probably stay there too after hearing these horror stories about the free stand. (it's still in its box)
The built in tuners require you to split between NTSC and ATSC or digital. They include a splitter with the TV, plus two little coax wires.
Games look about the same as they did on last years model......which is a good thing. :)
Aside from that annoying red spot, I am VERY PLEASED with the improvements over last years model. The picture is a clear step above. (Attack of the Clones look so much better on my new set, that showed the worst artifacting of all my good DVDs so I tested mostly on that. ROTJ didn't look bad either.....)
I am undecided as what to do about that spot. :( (I have 30 days to return/exchange it to BB.....and I would definately get another 56G786 because I was pleased with the picture otherwise) Would anyone here exchange a set for a 2 pixel red spot about 1/10" in from the right edge of the screen? (can still see it where I sit)

Although from looking at various material, it seems either like last years standard or dynamic mode.
I appreciate your initial thoughts on this set, very good info. I am leaning heavily toward the 52G786. I saw the 56" at BB the other day and it blew me away! For my preferences, it has everything I'm looking for.
Personally, I would exchange the set for another, if its something you noticed and can see you will probably be fixated or at least be looking for it later on. If you can deal, fine. But if it bothers you, exchange it. You're in the 30 day period, why not?
videobruce 07-26-05, 10:33 AM BUT, you could always get something worse. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Last years model had the 'theater' mode?
DIGITAL HAZE 07-26-05, 01:18 PM BUT, you could always get something worse. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.
Last years model had the 'theater' mode?
Yes, both models have the same theater mode setting. I don't know technically what it does, but everything appears darker and less colorfull. Nice blue sky becomes a yellowish haze that looks like it does when it's stale and humid. Red looks more orange.....I only used theater mode on the old set on DVDs because it made digital artifacts less apparent, and on both models I use it on standard TV for pretty much the same reason. On this new model, I don't need theater mode to get the artifacts down to tolerable levels. (on DVDs)
The dynamic mode seems different than last years. The blacks fall off and you just end up with high contrast. Last years dynamic mode made everything more vivid. This year standard mode seems to be the way to go......game mode appears to be standard mode with a different name. (its default setting is minus 10 contrast, but if you bring the settings to the same level as standard, you can't see any difference.) Dynamic mode, I have it set at 11 contrast and 5 brightness and you still don't have the black detail remaining that standard mode has with 10 contrast and 3 brightness, but dynamic mode does look more shiny and in some games it seems to look better. But for HDTV and movies I like standard mode.
I am undecided about that spot. Like Videobruce says I could get a different problem. Today when I turned on the set the black stuff on the left side was there, but it seems to go away after the set warms up for about 30-60 minutes. (and in normal viewing conditions you can't really see it. Heh, I have to remind myself that my last TV, a 32" floor model CRT, had remnants of a sticker on the lower right side for the 8 years I had it... :D (what kind of idiot puts a sticker ON A SCREEN, especially on a tv that costs $800+ in 1997!!) Well this is the kind of thing I'll think over for a few days, its back to work tommorrow anyways. This is the 3rd tv I've had since June 4 and I am getting tired of this. :( (panny 44" LCD, the 52" DILA, and now this one.)

You know that Standard, Theater, Game, etc are just factory settings that all suck and need to be calibrated right?

Just from my experience but nothing should be on HIGH. In color temp it intros too much blue, so put it on low. Gamma artificially beefs up the contrast losing middle grey scale, turn it off. Turn noise off it softens, almost blurs the picture. Not sure what Smart picture is but I'd turn it off too. Those are only for consumers to play with, they usually do more harm then good to over ideal PQ.

Return the set for another one. Is it a dead pixel? Maybe wait a few days and see, you have a full month. The splotches are usually cold related and disappear after the set warms up.
The fan is quieter? Excellent.
So you see PQ improvements? What about color banding? Where you see a background blending but it's not smooth, it blends in steps of color. And how is noise? Like on dark low light backgrounds? If it's a bad transfer or old DVD, the noise would not do well with the old JVC and you'd see 'mosquito noise'.
Just took a look at the 56G at HHGREGG, and I must say that the picture quality was better than last years model 52Z. I was able to review them side by side and one of the first things I noticed was very little mis-convergence/CA, if any. :D
The overall picture was more sharp, and tighter than the 52Z. Didn't try any of the settings, but I didn't feel the need to. Seems like it was adjusted properly for it's location.
If the 52G looks as good as the 56G, I may give it another go! :)
HHGREGG didn't have the black version, and from the sound of the sales person that version wasn't in the plans yet.
But, It'll have to be the black version (HD-52G786) with last years black swivel stand for me to bite. :)
videobruce 07-26-05, 11:53 PM DIGITAL HAZE, can you post a pic of the problem?
SouthBark 07-27-05, 12:02 AM Has anyone seen the new black stand for the 52G/56G DILA's? Attached is a picture from another forum. I have only been able to locate the silver stand which is RKCILAM6.

JoeBloggz 07-27-05, 12:36 AM Can someone talk about the different aspect modes on these sets? I am interested to see if there is a decent "stretch mode" where you can fill the screen with 4:3 material without too much distortion. From what I read, there is full, zoom, and wide? Also in S&V mag's review of the 61Z they metioned bowing on 4:3 images as a negative. Anyone have thoughts on this?
darthrsg 07-27-05, 01:03 AM hey joe i got the 52z575 no bowing on 4x3, and the stretch on 4x3 material is really good i think, on my old philips 34pw8520 it gave everybody fat heads it added a few more than 10lbs,
SenorPete 07-27-05, 09:39 AM Thanks to everyone who gave me input on deciding wether to buy the 56G online or from a B&M. I'm still undecided. I have yet to see the 56G in person yet so I definitely won't purchase before I get a look-see. Looks like BB finally has the set on their website and I am hoping to go see one after work today although 2 calls to the store gave me 2 different answers as to if they have any in stock or on display. In fact, when I gave 1 person the model # JVC 56G786 he told me they sold their only 2 for a price under 2k!!! Obviously they are a little mixed up over there so I will just stop by and see what is there.
I had felt like I had to rush out and buy this set quickly before I missed out on the free stand but from what I'm reading it looks like I will be getting a different stand regardless. Once I physically see the set I will make my final decision on if, where, and when to purchase it.... but boy am I ready!

Go to bestbuy's website ..... televisions ...... projection televisions
the 52" and 56" are the 1st two listed. I was beginning to wonder why all these people were seeing the sets at BB but no info on the website. Guess they were just waiting until more areas had them arriving?

SouthBark 07-27-05, 11:38 AM Videobruce,
Thanks, but I'm talking about the black version of the RKCILAM6 (see the picture in my post). That thread is about the RKCPR66, which sucks evidently.
SouthBark 07-27-05, 11:41 AM What's with the weird part numbers on BestBuy.com? They list the 527BP6 and 567BP6. Is this just their combo offer with the stand? AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

I believe I have read on one of the threads that you are correct and the model number BB uses has to do with the combo stand offer.
...That Probably added to the confusion of the BB employees I spoke to on the phone
I received my 61z786 last week, having just moved in to a new home, I am finally getting a chance to enjoy it. I am very happy so far, HD is excellent but I am not too impressed by the other cable channels. I am searching this huge thread now for more tips on improving the "pixelized" look on SD.
I do have one question, I have COMCAST cable, and I tried to use the DVI to HDMI cable and for some reason, my TV will not display an image from this connection. It works fine with component. Comcast's best answer so far is that they have heard that has been a problem! Has anyone else encountered this, or know any solution besides not using hdmi?
Thanks,
Joe
Zebulun 07-27-05, 02:06 PM I saw someone mentioning earlier that they bought it from dtvcity.com. Am I the only one having trouble getting to their HD-ILA TV page? I can find it through a google search, but it seems strange it doesn't work on their home page.
sanremo 07-27-05, 02:17 PM Click on DLP T.V.. Scroll down the page and on the right hand side it shows LCD and LCOS models.

That 'pixelized' look is because you are looking at analog cable channels. They look like crap because they weren't meant to be blown up to 61" and there really isn't a lot you can do about it (other than sitting further back). The digital channels should look better (but still not HD quality). I know on COX they are above channel 102, or something. I don't know what they are on Comcast.
Thanks for a reply rlbjr, Comcast is new to me, but I am talking about premiere movie channels (hbo, showtime, starz) I would assume these should be digital. Maybe I am expecting too much seeing that I have been watching a crt for the last 9 years. But I would think the digital channels should still look better then these do.

try a composite line for standard def, it will utilize the sets comb filter, im using it my dtivo standard def and lots of the channels look like dvds some not so good
Videoops 07-27-05, 04:27 PM Actually, many of the digital cable channels will look worse than analog. While analog must take the full bandwidth digital can be compressed as much as the cable system wants to.
Believe it or not, cable systems are starting to be "starved" for bandwidth...what with carrying HD channels, telephone, computer traffic, video on demand, 7 channels of HBO and Showtime, etc. What they do is bundle many of the channels together and share the bandwidth by applying heavier compression to channels with talking heads and lighter compression to sports channels. By analysing screen movement, compression rates can be adjusted within groups of channels. Of course, some channels get better treatment than others...like those owned and run by your cable company.
I actually plugged an antenna in to my new JVC 56" (I live 3 miles line of sight from most transmitters in NYC) and get better digital reception from over the air signals than from the analog signals on my cable system.
Another thing to do is to call your cable company and have them boost the signal strength a bit (or try buying a cable amp yourself, but they can get fairly expensive.) If the set is receiving a weak signal it is doing digital error correction--guessing at the data it is missing, and it may guess wrong on some data.
End of lecture.
DIGITAL HAZE 07-27-05, 04:40 PM DIGITAL HAZE, can you post a pic of the problem?
Heh, batteries for DIGITAL CAMERA :D are dead. Recharging.....to add more fun there is a huge storm with a history of high wind and frequent cloud to ground lightning about 15 miles away headed my direction. (can hear powerfull, distant thunder now.) I'm in the country and I give it a 50-60% chance of putting my power out for the evening so I might not get the pics up till tommorrow.
Kid Red you have my head spinning, I'm a noob when it comes to some of these terms used by you videofiles, but rest assured the picture is overall better than before, and I don't see anything that is worse than it was before. The color is perfect to my eyes. Digital artifacts are less apparent for some reason than on the older set. (yes I've recreated the "worst" and "best" settings possible in regards to both seeing and hiding them and this set is just plain better than the old one.) They are still there, as they will be on all large high def. TVs, but they are much less noticeable, to the point where I can now "live" with them.
I even tryed to recreate the "tearing" that I've seen occassionally on 480i sources, and this set seems to "keep up" better than the old one. You could see spots about 8" diameter on the old set with black lines every so often, but it was only for a split second. I have not seen that so far on this set. "Genessa" seems to have helped out, and the color management is better too. No miracles, but definately a step up from before. Now if I still had the old set........no I wouldn't sell a 1 year old set just for these upgrades. I'd wait for 1080P and even more upgrades before I did that, but that's with my budget... :(
The set is going back no doubt. However small that red spot is I can see it from where I sit and it annoys me to no end. Thank god I didn't buy online, these goofy things always happen to me. I'll still get a pick up, weather permitting. (if not today, tommorrow)
QUICK EDIT: Kid Red, my settings are like that because I am into games, and on current machines blurring is preffered, jagged edges are less apparent. This also seems to hide artifacting a little better. Everyone has different tastes, the first priority for me is not seeing OBVIOUS graphical problems such as aliasing and artifacts. That black detail doesn't mean much when you see a bazillion artifacts next to that pretty black coat that annoy you to no end. Slightly crushed blacks and no/less artifacts is more appealing to me, it was my $3,000 after all. ;) I'm far from done tweaking this thing anyways, I'll work on better blacks gradually as I view more sources, but not at the expense of seeing artifacts. (I will be messing with turning off dynamic gamma next, the DNR will stay on until XBOX 360 :D )
try a composite line for standard def, it will utilize the sets comb filter, im using it my dtivo standard def and lots of the channels look like dvds some not so good
Since I am using component from my cable box, if I hook up a composite also, will the box default to composite on standard def?
ucsbgaucho 07-27-05, 06:05 PM Ok... here's a question that maybe you guys can suggest my best route to take... I'm looking at getting the 56g886, but I've got two options...
1. Buy from Best Buy using my BB card and wait until they have a 24-month financing deal so I can pay with no interest, but pay $2,900 plus tax and pick it up myself.
2. Buy from a place like DTVcity, save $600 up front on the price but pay $200 in shipping, no tax, and wait a week or more to get it, and charge to my normal CC and pay interest as I pay it off.
I'm leaning towards the BB route, but I dont know when they might have another good financing deal. Nothing they could do could ever beat Good Guys current 60-months no interest deal, but I dont want to apply for another card right now. Do you think its more worth it to wait for Best Buy to come up with something good for financing, or order it online and then wait for shipping? Or should I go into the Best Buy, haggle down the price itself and then just pay with a CC, and not wait for a financing deal?
dkennedy 07-27-05, 08:58 PM I'll would go with BB because of the 30 day return policy.
Cyclonus 07-27-05, 10:17 PM That DTV City price is on the 56 is really damn good! I was thinking of going with HDTVtime.com because they had a great price but the (shipped) price at DTV is even better now... and as I certainly don't want to harp on price on this forum, my point is that DTV City is a store that is actually known around here and is reliable, so that's even better.
I'll go down to the local Best Buy and talk to the incompetent morons there tomorrow. I don't know why everybody at this Best Buy is such an idiot... I've been to other Best Buy stores and they didn't seem this stupid. Hell, even the people at the Circuit City across the street are reasonably competent (well, at least the employees in the TV section). Nonetheless, given the retailer markup and the sales tax, I'm pretty sure I'll go with DTV City... their guarantees and return policies seem pretty strong... and I have a promotional 0% credit card right now anyway, so Best Buy's financing offer isn't that important to me.
darthrsg 07-27-05, 10:37 PM Since I am using component from my cable box, if I hook up a composite also, will the box default to composite on standard def?
it might send a composite signal or it might not some disable with hd(my dvd player will send composite component and svid all at the same time), try running it to another input and see of course you wont get your hd over composite, but if your box puts hd over component and still puts out analog on composite you might be golden, you just have to switch inputs for hd or sd, hope that helps

I'm in the midst of the same basic decision. I've finally picked out what I want, but can't decide where to buy it. I have it narrowed to three separate choices: Best Buy - most expensive, but can exchange until satisfied; Vanns - authorized dealer with a good reputation, better price, but can't return easily (or at all, $200 shipping is too much to waste); and dtvcity - best price by far, but I don't know much about them, and as far as I know they're not an authorized dealer. Of course then there's the warranty aspect.... its all driving me crazy!
videobruce 07-28-05, 12:48 AM I almost fell over when I saw that delivered price from DTV City.
I was almost ready to pull the pin when I saw it, but will wait untill I see more of this new model locally. There are 4 stores that sell JVC, but only two have it so far.

DTV City states very emphatically on their website that they are an authorized dealer, so unless they're just flat-out lying, that shouldn't be a concern. As for the extended warranty, it just doesn't look to me like it's worth it... the factory warranty covers it initially, beyond that, I'll take my chances. After all, there's a possibility of anything breaking down, and I haven't had too many problems with appliances dropping dead frequently. Either that or my onetime job as a car salesman (and the knowledge of how much markup there is) makes it impossible for me to shell out for an extended warranty, hehe.
As for returns, I'm not too picky about small stuff... I already know the JVC onscreen menus aren't as slick as some other brands, the remote might not have the most convenient buttons, the fan makes some noise, the blacks aren't the deepest ever, etc, but I've seen the TV enough in stores to know that the picture is going to be fine for me, and that's what's important. As long as it's not defective, it's highly unlikely that I'll have it for a week and then decide it's just not the right TV for me.
SenorPete 07-28-05, 07:18 AM I see a lot more people are going through the same dilemma I have between buying from the internet or b&m store. DTVcity certainly makes it difficult with such a good price. I tried to see the 56G yesterday at the BB in Philly but no luck. They say they have 2 but they are not on display. They said probably by next week. The 3 other BB's near me in South Jersey don't have these sets yet. I will not purchase until I see this set in person and I am getting impatient!
I am leaning towards purchasing from the internet. With the $600+ savings I could purchase a good stand instead of the the free one that many are saying is sub-standard and still feel like I came out ahead.
ucsbgaucho...The BB stores near me are all offering 30 month 0% financing, if yours do not, maybe they will soon
I'm still looking for negative reviews or comments about DTVcity but have yet to find any.

Good news on the improvements. Hopefully I'll be able to switch out mine for a G series in the next week or so.
I hear you about the black crush versus detail, it's a trade off for sure. I think the filter mod helps a lot. Once I get my G series I'll try the mod on it. Though I keep DNR off so I can see detail. With it off, for me, it's too soft for viewing. Gaming is another story.
ucsbgaucho 07-28-05, 11:27 AM SenorPete, so BB does financing deals sometimes on a store-by-store basis, aside from what you might be able to find on their website? Would a financing deal like that be listed in their weekly ad, or just in store?
I wish they could haggle on the financing, and I could talk them into matching the 60-months that Good Guys is offering right now. Sheesh! That's a good term for a CAR loan, let alone a $3,000 TV.
ucsbgaucho 07-28-05, 11:29 AM SenorPete, better yet, which exact store did you see the 30-month financing offered? Maybe I'll go down to my closest one that has the 56G and tell them "the BB store in _____, __ is offering 30-month 0%, can you match that?" Wonder if they'd do it
videobruce 07-28-05, 11:37 AM tried to see the 56G yesterday at the BB in Philly but no luck. They say they have 2 but they are not on display. They said probably by next week. The 3 other BB's near me in South Jersey don't have these sets yet. Amazing!
I can't believe this market area got them before much larger areas did!
SouthBark 07-28-05, 02:12 PM Picked up my 52G786 from Best Buy in Duluth, GA yesterday!!! Their part number is 527BP6 (packaged with the JVC stand, but 52G786 labels were on the box and marked over with a magic marker). This store is the only one in Atlanta that has them in stock (in black). The BB warehouse in Suwanee, GA has both the 52 and 56, but the other stores haven't taken delivery for some reason.
I was up until 1 am setting it up, and I was able to see Conan O'Brien on HD. It looked incredible!! Played Pirates of the Caribbean through component on a basic Panny DVD player. It looked pretty good, with blacks that are good enough for me. I will report back with pictures and more info later.
A also bought the old DILA black stand from HHGregg for a discounted price since it is discontinued. It is model RKCILA5B.
SenorPete 07-28-05, 02:13 PM ucsbgaucho - I called the BB where I *thought* I saw 30 months 0% on tv's $299 and up and was told that they are offering 18 months 0% NOT 30 months. The person told me that if I saw 30 months (on a dry erase board at the front of the store) that it was wrong. It is possible that I read the sign wrong but I think it is more likely that the information was incorrect. In any case, I believe the 18 month deal is being offered everywhere and on the website but that does not compare to the 60 month deal you wrote about.
Videobruce - I too am surprised that I can not find a store in the PHilly area that has the new set on display. I called 3 more stores today and 1 does have the 56G but not on display yet. Perhaps next week.
I still have yet to find bad press on dtvcity and I am leaning towards giving them a shot for the actual purchase (after I actually see the TV in person)
Hi all, I've been lurking for a while and narrowed my choices down to the 52G786 thanks to all of the posts on these forums. However, I'm concerned about the CA. Do all the sets have it? I can't really notice it from 9' but it seems to make the edges a little softer and take away some detail. I think because I see it up close and know what it is it bothers me even when I can't see it from a normal viewing position. So far I've seen it on three sets, a 52G, 56G and I believe a 61Z. I haven't noticed it on the DLP's. Is there anyway to eliminate or reduce the problem? Does JVC send out a tech to fix it? Is it a hit or miss thing some sets don't have it at all, some a little and some a lot?
JimsArcade 07-28-05, 04:43 PM Videobruce - I too am surprised that I can not find a store in the PHilly area that has the new set on display. I called 3 more stores today and 1 does have the 56G but not on display yet. Perhaps next week. The Best Buy in Montgomeryville, PA about 20 mi. north of Philly has both the 52G786 and the 56G786 on display.
If you're in the area, though, continue north on 309 for about 1/4 mile and visit World Wide Stereo instead. They have the 52G786, 56G786, 61Z786 and 70G886 all on display showing a much better HD feed (i.e., not as "lossy" due to oversplitting at Best Buy).
ucsbgaucho 07-28-05, 04:43 PM Pete, yah I saw the 18 months on the website... I think I'll wait till Sunday when next week's ads come out, see if they have anything better... or maybe I'll try calling them Saturday and see if they'll haggle on the financing.. doubt it... If they come up to 24 months that might be enough to get me to bite... definitely DONT want the free stand, I hope that's only temporary...
SouthBark 07-28-05, 06:34 PM Gulley - My 52G786 has very little CA and none visible at a few feet and more.
SenorPete - DTVCity does not have the 786's in stock. I pre-ordered one from them last Friday and cancelled because BB had them available.
Thanks Southbark. I looked at a 56" today at Best Buy in NYC on 23rd St. Didn't notice any CA. However, I did notice it was much softer than the Samsung HL-R5087 right beside it. I'm hoping calibration could improve the image detail but I'd love to hear peoples thoughts. Also, Does anyone have an opinion as to whether or not 104" (8.8') is too close for the 56". I'm torn between the 52" and the 56". Lastly, Does ISF calibration result in a big improvement in PQ on the D-ILA?
Cyclonus 07-29-05, 01:58 AM Thanks Southbark. I looked at a 56" today at Best Buy in NYC on 23rd St. Didn't notice any CA. Viewing distance is always a weird issue, especially these days when there are so many different resolutions being displayed. My TV screen is about 151" away from my eyes... right now, it's a crappy, 12 year old, 25 inch tube TV... which is definitely small from that distance, but I can still watch TV shows without having to forego sitting on the couch and just pulling a chair up half the distance to the screen. When I was first pondering buying a D-ILA last year, I was wondering whether the 52 or 61 would be preferable (that's all that was available then)... now that I'm within days of purchasing, I've pretty much settled on a 56... it seems like the best fit for my situation... that is, viewing distance, viewing angles from the various seating positions in my living room, and to some degree, price.
So, as to your 104" viewing distance, it is probably closer than the "experts" would recommend for this size screen (for example, from that close a distance, some lower-quality source material may reveal flaws that are not apparent from further away) but based on what I've read on these forums, people generally seem to be happy as long as their viewing distance is at least twice the diagonal measurement of the screen (any less than 2x may be overdoing it). Given that, it seems at your distance, the 52 might be the better choice. For me personally, I think the 2x factor may still be a bit close for my eyes... I probably lean a little more towards sitting a little further out, perhaps 2.5 times. To see how it looks to you, I suppose you could go to a local store that has both in stock, bring a measuring tape with you, adjust the TV settings, stand 104" away, and see how things look to you. It's not a perfect representation of how it will look in your home, but it might give you some idea...
As for ISF calibration, I can't really say much. I'll say this, some people swear by it, but personally I can't see myself shelling out the money for it. Personally, I plan to just get an Avia disc and see how things look after that, then take it from there if necessary.
SenorPete 07-29-05, 09:16 AM JimsArcade - Thanks for the info. I think a trip to world wide stereo might be in order. I'd love to see the other sets as well.
SouthBark - Do you know if DTV was out of the 56" or just the 52"??? If I order this set it will be soon after I get a good look at it (which could be next week). I hadn't even thought about what I would do if it is out of stock!
flinchn 07-29-05, 10:00 AM I sit less than 10ft away from my 61" dla and yeah the first few days it seemed huge, but once i got used to it, I wouldn't want any smaller
go for it
It's been a week since the 56" model landed on my living room and I wanted to provide some initial "critical" feedback on the performance. I plan to do a full ISF calibration shortly so I will post all the results for those wondering the before/after capabilities of this set. I also plan to try and measure the effects of all the gizmo settings I currently have set to OFF. Until then I wanted to mention one aspect of this set that caught me off guard: unexpected digital artifacts. The main reason I went the DILA route was to get away from certain DLP artifacts I was accustomed to seeing on my NEC HT1000 FP. The rainbows are obviously not there, but I noticed the presence of some unexpected items: dithering and color banding. Furthermore I noticed two new artifacts not present on previous DLP FP units I've owned, one is digital "macro blocking" noise and the other is the way it displays certain dark areas. For example, the black bars used to set brightness in Avia would break down into smaller pieces as I approached the proper setting (I'll take a picture and post it later).
Before everyone starts defending the set, I'll say that I'm very finicky about my video and I tend to pick up every and any issue with just about any set. These issues just were unexpected (notice that I haven't said anything about its blacks). BTW I'm feeding the unit using a Bravo D1 to it's native resolution and a Sony HD200 satellite receiver for HDTV, both via DVI. I still have plenty of testing to do via component (which I haven't yet) so I will be reporting more as I continue. I look forwarding to sharing as much as I can and learn from the calibration and daily use/abuse.
Zebulun 07-29-05, 10:17 AM I sit less than 10ft away from my 61" dla and yeah the first few days it seemed huge, but once i got used to it, I wouldn't want any smaller

So would I be crazy to get a 56" for 7.5-8 feet away?
Kid Red 07-29-05, 10:33 AM Zebulum- Yes, I would. I sit 10' away from my 52" and I don't think I'd sit any closer then that or you start to see more flaws.
Kid Red 07-29-05, 10:44 AM Cyclonus- Softness can not be fixed in calibration. If you think the JVC has a softer opinion, then that's not really going to change from any tweaking.
LMDA1- Sorry, color banding is an issue I hoped was fixed in the new G series. It doesn't happen often on my Z series, but I would rather do without it. Macroblocking though sounds more like a source issue. I've only ever seen it on HD channels. Maybe try the Bravo over component?
flinchn 07-29-05, 10:50 AM I have to disagree, out of the box, believe me, I was worried too
I am bothered by artifacts, dithering, jaggies and other flaws as much if not more as the next person, but once you dial these sets in correctly, with grayscale contrast and brightness, you aren't gonna be dissapointed in the hd or dvd picture,
sure regular cable has its bad channels, but I can easily enjoy almost all of them after just a week of calibration work
the way i see it, if you want a big screen experience, what is the point in sitting far away?
i measured my viewing distance - just over 9ft for my 61Z786
Looking at it just now, I actually wouldn't mind a bigger set!
JimsArcade 07-29-05, 11:47 AM SenorPete - If you're closer to Ardmore than Montgomeryville, you may want to check that World Wide Stereo out instead. I haven't been there yet to see what model(s) they have on display, but I hope to go there during my lunch break to verify.
:edit: The Ardmore store has all the models save one (the 56G, if I remember correctly). I wasn't as impressed with the images at the Ardmore store as I was at the Montgomeryville one. Also, I was very happy with the prices they were showing.
Cyclonus 07-29-05, 12:28 PM Cyclonus- Softness can not be fixed in calibration. If you think the JVC has a softer opinion, then that's not really going to change from any tweaking.
I'm not suggesting that calibration or tweaking will specifically resolve softness, just that basic calibration with an Avia disc is a good step to take in a general sense.
Failed to mention one other artifact nitpicks I have with the set, it appears to be a CUE-like artifact on intense red images. I'll be sure to capture a picture of it as well. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this before.
Kid Red: What surprised me about color banding is the fact that DILA is supposed to have the upper hand on this exact issue compared to other digital technologies, yet here it performs worst. BTW, the apparent macroblocking was present on DVDs that have no such artifact on them. I will continue to test but I'm fairly certain it's not the source.
flinchn: I have this unfortunate ability to "capture" artifacts that go unnoticed by many. This set performs semi-decent deinterlacing and scaling, but it's far from excellent. I look forward to tweaking it into shape.
SouthBark 07-29-05, 01:56 PM SenorPete - Not sure if DTVCity has the 56 or not. But the guy did say they had the silver models in stock and not the black. This was when I ordered a 52, so I don't know if the 56 was included in his statement.
dmestan 07-29-05, 02:09 PM I recently purchased a 56G786 and I'm trying to understand what exactly the D.I.S.T does. The JVC CS rep wasn't much help. Is this upconverting? If so, does that mean I don't need an upconverting DVD player, or would I still benefit from one?
thx, Don
dmestan,
D.I.S.T. is merely JVC's marketing name for the set's internal scaling/deinterlacing engine. Unlike CRT-based units, any digital technology (LCD, DLP, DILA, LCoS, ...) will require for an analog signal to be converted to digital and then scaled to fit the set's display resolution (in our case 1280x720). An upconverting DVD player feeding a digital signal would bypass the sets deinterlacer and potentially the scaler, so the question is whether the DVDs "engine" is better than the TVs.
Kid Red 07-29-05, 02:24 PM I'm not suggesting that calibration or tweaking will specifically resolve softness, just that basic calibration with an Avia disc is a good step to take in a general sense.
Ah yes it does. I was under the impression that you were asking if calibration could fix the softness you witnessed and compared to the DLP. The softness will not improve once you tweak, if you indeed think it's soft, is all I meant.

Hmm, macroblocking on DVDs? Sounds like your faradouja DVD player, not the JVC. Otherwise, I have not seen any MB with my Denon 2900, but I did with my Zenith 318 which has the faradouja chip with MB issues. Just make sure it's not your DVD player.
Sad to hear color banding is on the G series, my biggest pet peeve next to mosquito noise on dimmly scenes.
Kidred,
I'll confirm this weekend but the BravoD1 has no faroudja processing nor banding issues. Believe me, I have every hope that its anything but the TV !
flinchn 07-29-05, 02:45 PM Re: D.I.S.T.
You can enter a demo mode from the user menu that shows you what it's doing in a side-by-side
i'm impressed

Hmmm... while I agree that D-ILA's are generally a little "softer" than a good DLP (though not enough for it to be a problem for me), I don't think I've ever posted a message regarding that issue... I believe you may be confusing me with another message-poster...
Does anyone have an opinion as to whether or not 104" (8.8') is too close for the 56". I'm torn between the 52" and the 56".
The optimal viewing position to achieve the full HD experience is –
1.63 times the diagonal,
Or,
3.1 times the height
Both of these formulas give you the preferred 30 degrees viewing angel.
There is an interesting site covering this, google “viewing distance calculator” for a more thorough analysis.

Ah I see what happened, you quoted 'Gulley' who commented on calibrating to fix the softness. My bad. I saw the text, saw your name and assumed you wrote it.
Kid Red 07-29-05, 03:46 PM Anyone here ever compare HD cable over component versus HDMI? The only thing I've ever read was HDMI introduced black crush. However, that may not carry over to the G series. My DVD is component, so I've been thinking about trying my HD thru DVI>HDMI.
Kid,
I'll let you know this weekend when I connect my Accupel signal generator and measure the results. It should be interesting and quite conclusive.

Interesting, I've been doing most of my playing with High temp, I'll try theater mode and Low temp.
I don't have a great deal of bowing on 4:3 material either, maybe a tiny bit, but certainly nothing to write home about. (Maybe it's because I have black bars from HD output on my cable box instead of using the set's grey bars?)
My component input and my HDMI inpit retains different settings per mode, I'm not clear what he's talking about here.
Black level will always be an issue with this set, I'm afraid. I was torn between my movie/sports viewing before my purchase, but so far, I think I think I'll be fine.
For someone who tore apart his old Panny to disable SVM, focus and adjust RGB pots, and various other things, I'm just to scared to try the density mod.... :(
SenorPete 07-29-05, 08:16 PM JimsArcade - thanks for the tip:
I called World Wide Stereo Mongomeryville and talked to a real nice guy (Tom). He said they will not be stocking the 56" JVC. The reason was basically that they didn't have the space and that they are happy with the 52" & 61". He said they just got the 52" version in this afternoon. He also said they could certainly order me the 56" TV but they just won't be stocking it. He didn't have a price on the 56" but quoted me the prices of the 52" & 61". The 52" price was over $300 more than the price of the 56" through dtvcity.
My plan is to (hopefully) see this TV next week if one of the store's has them on display. Or I'll go to to World Wide Stereo and look at the 52". If I like what I see I may just have to order this thing from dtvcity.
videobruce 07-30-05, 12:05 AM Peak brightness before calibration was a relatively low 50.1 ftL because the HDMI input defaults to a low contrast setting. I measured a blazing 125 ftL with contrast at maximum,Interesting they measured only the HDMI input.
Too bad they didn't use component or better yet material off the ATSC tuner.

I found that hdtvtime.com is even cheaper than dtvcity. Have you considered them, and if so, what were your reasons for deciding against it?
Cyclonus 07-30-05, 02:43 AM I found that hdtvtime.com is even cheaper than dtvcity. Have you considered them, and if so, what were your reasons for deciding against it?
HDTVtime is definitely cheaper for the 61 inch set, but for the 56 the total price (including delivery) is actually slightly less at DTV City.
The only thing I can say as to the difference between the 2 is that I've seen some people on these forums mention having used DTV City and getting reasonably good service, whereas I have never seen any reviews (either positive or negative) of HDTVtime.
SenorPete 07-30-05, 07:42 AM I found that hdtvtime.com is even cheaper than dtvcity. Have you considered them, and if so, what were your reasons for deciding against it?
I was not aware of hdtvtime but have just quickly checked out there site. A few things I saw on their website kind of caught me off guard. The price on the 56" is indeed almost the same as dtvcity plus they seem to have a free shipping offer which makes them cheaper. However they charge a different price for the black model (G786) and the silver model (G886 ). The black model is $50 more. Why should that be?
They also have a great price on the 61" but there is also a difference in price between the black model and the silver model (this time the black model is $100 more!)
Strange thing - the silver 61" is $1.15 cheaper than the black 56". Seems like a lot of inconsistencies to me. If I really thought I could get the 61" for less or only a hundred dollars more ( for the black model) than the 56" I would probably get it. I'll do a little more searching on hdtvtime but my initial impression is : beware
Oh yeah - and the TV stand that everyone else is giving away free (model RK-CPR66) is listed as an option costing $299!!! That is for a stand a lot of people are calling a piece of junk!
Kid Red 07-30-05, 10:35 AM Kid,
I'll let you know this weekend when I connect my Accupel signal generator and measure the results. It should be interesting and quite conclusive.
Excellent. I'm also curious about service menu tweaking, if the lower end grey scale could be improved. Though, the filter mod is probably the best way to improve blacks.

Iv'e been checking HDTVtime's site for several weeks now, and indeed their website design seems significantly less professional than most online stores. Their pricing scheme is also rather odd, as you say, with the different color models being priced differently. I think they're adjusting the price based on demand, which currently seems higher for the all-black sets as opposed to the silver-and-black sets. As for the stand, it's possible that they never updated their site with the free stand info (since it's only a limited time thing), so they're listing the stand at its regular price.
Overall, though, I haven't been able to find any reviews, anywhere, of HDTVtime, so it's hard to get a feel for whether they're a crappy company, or a reliable company who just doesn't have a very slick website.
SenorPete 07-30-05, 02:19 PM Cyclonus -
I found this little tidbit while doing a search on hdtvtime. It is from a forum called hdtvvoice.com and it was from March of this year. the full thread is here:
http://www.hdtvoice.com/voice/archive/index.php/t-17815.html
I could not find any reviews about them either, but I did have an online chat with a rep and she says why they don't have any reviews:
Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'HD11'
HD11: Hello. How may I help you?
you: hello. Thank you. where may i find customer reviews about your site?
HD11: We don't participate in customer review websites. They are inherently flawed. The web administrators don't take the time to verify that the information posted is true.
HD11: We are howevre on the better business bureau's website.
HD11: We are listed a H.D.T.V.Time in Powder Springs, Georgia.
you: You have good prices, but before I do internet business, I like to read what other customers have had to say about their experiences with you, but you don't have any customer comment that I can read?
HD11: Like I said, you can find us on the better business bureau's site, which is FAR more reliable than any merchant review site. We do not participate in ratings such as Bizrate and others, because they do not even do so much as verify that the poster is actually a customer of the site they are reviewing. These types of review sites are completely unreliable.
you: That is fair enough. I am impressed with your site, and will keep looking for anything that interests me. Thank you.
HD11: No, Thank you.
HD11: Let us know if we can be of any additional help to you.
I didn't believe their chat button would actually work, but I was pretty impressed!

SenorPete 07-30-05, 02:23 PM I still find it hard to believe you can buy the 61" silver for less than the black 56"
Does anyone know if the 56" sets have any better or newer technology in them than the 61"??? I am under the impression that the only thing "old" on the 61" is the chasis. Is this correct? I mean why would the larger set be cheaper than the smaller one?

I've been following JVC's LCOS HD-ILA line ever since it came out, and the impression I get is this... they originally came out with the 1st generation 52 and 61 inch models... they used 6-digit model numbers, such as 52Z575... the 52 being size, the 575 being the cabinet color, and the "Z" being sort of unclear. None of these had built-in HD tuners. The first models of the second generation were the 61Z786 and 61Z886. These had a built-in HD tuner, the "Genessa" chip, improved color management, a VGA port on the back, and a modified cabinet design with thinner sides and speakers. For a couple months, the 61's were the only 2nd generation models. But when they finally brought out 2nd generation models in more sizes (52, 56, 70), for some reason they changed the Z to a G. I can't find any indication that a 61 inch model with a G is on the horizon... nor can I find any indication that the 52, 56, and 70 inch G's have any additional features that the 2nd gen 61Z's don't have. Perhaps there are some slight improvements due to later build date (since the 61's came out before any other 2nd gen model)?
Of course, I'm largely reading between the lines here... any definitive info anyone has would certainly be appreciated.
darthrsg 07-31-05, 03:17 AM first off, the people in this forum are awesome. for critical assessment, advice, and sense of community for this hobbie/obsession there is no other place on the internet to be. now i know every persons user settings are different, the viewing areas are different, the content viewed is different, the sources viewed are different but it still poses no harm for users of like sets to post the settings they use to help owners and prospective buyers narrow down the multitude of options in the menus of modern sets. i have noticed in other threads for other brands it is easy to find this information but the jvc crew seem kinda tight lipped on this subject. so this is an invitation to do this.

these settings are derived from 2 weeks of constant tweaking with avia and dve under various lighting and sources from all curtains drawn open in the middle of the day to pitch black all sorts of dvds, directv, xbox( the only hidef i have is out of my pc via powerstrip dvi to hdmi)
the conclusion i have arrived at, at least with my setup which i consider fairly decent, is that this set needs little to no calibration compared to many crts i have owned. this speaks highly of the brand. after reading almost all the posts here and numerous reviews elsewhere there is not a lot of complaining like other brands, sure people get bad sets, and so far the response for service have been favorable. also i know i dont have a top of the line set from jvc but i did get an april 2005 make of the hd52z575 it has none of the issues from older ones like the 2004 types. im sure that a professional isf tweak would do wonders for any set but calibrators are few and far between in the "deep south" so i have to go the diy route and while im just getting confident with the service adjustment menu for this set im still not clear on a lot of the registers in the menu i have learned that most of the s0 are video t0 are audio and z0 are generally not to be messed with, while tinkering in the adjustment menu the s002 reg is defaulted to 1 it is called ntsc bl for black level i guess setting it to 0 increases the darkness of the screen and at 15 blacks go grayish , i have also located the r g b drive registers but adjusting them while on a color pattern i can tell no significant change except with red. does ay one have any suggestions ? if possible could someone explain or point me to a thread about the difference of the color temp for these sets low/high , low seems to be preferred but on the theater pro setting skin tones look orange, is it for hd? or dvd? it seems a little too dark for my taste, lots of shadow detail loss but a great looking picture nonetheless. sorry to be long winded but if you users could post user and service adjustments it might help me satisfy my need to tweak the hell outta the set because if other user settings dont deviate too much from mine then it will safe to that these sets are pretty damn good out of the box.
Kid Red 07-31-05, 09:57 AM darthrsg- Keep in mind your settings are a direct result of Avia/DVE being played in your DVD player. Playing Avia/DVE on my DVD player could possibly give me completely opposite settings. I have found that Gamma artificially creates darker blacks by sacrificing darker greys. It also changes colors some, so I leave it off. Color temp low is more neutral, whereas setting it on high adds a lot of blue to the picture it seems.
Good find with the nstc bl- I'll play with mine some to test. Keep learning the service menu for us :)
videobruce 07-31-05, 10:06 AM darthrsg; how much and where do you see the difference between switching the dynamic gamma on and off? Are your observations the same as KidRed?
chipvideo 07-31-05, 11:18 AM Ok they brought out a third 61z786 last night and right out of the box I turned it to the gray screen and what do you know I see a nice black spot 2 inches from the top of the screen towards the middle. The two guys even tried wipping it off. Yep what an eyesore. I can even see it when watching movies 12 feet back in my home theater chairs. They will be sending out a 4th one later today.
I must be getting towards setting a record for amount of sets before I actually get one that works like it should.
I think that there is some sort of quality control issue at JVC or something. Every set I had had pixles out so far and other problems. I wonder how many sets I will go through before they just tell me to take my money and leave. This is with Video Only.

on my set i dont see a color difference but the blacker or darker scenes are blacker overall and the gray bars on 4x3 dim or brighten as the picture level changes but when set to full aspect(stretch) you dont see the dimming or brightening, i have calibrated the black and white levels with dynamic gamma on and off and come up with the same settings at least for standard def, i can see no difference for dvd or xbox i suppose thats due to it being a 480p...

Well then can you explain why I have been through 3 sets so far and going on a 4th one today.
Hey I love the picture quality of this set, but the 2nd one had an image burned into the screen diagnally. The third one had a black spot on the screen that was noticable from my viewing distance of about 12 feet. This is unaceptable to me.

Kid,
I assume these settings are with the filter in place, correct ? Those picture settings are quite high. I wasn't able to do as much testing as I'd like this weekend but one thing was very clear, you want to lower the detail setting considerably (at least -15). Anything above that adds visible ringing, yet lowering it to that level does not remove ANY detail as confirmed with various patterns.
BTW, it would appear that the component inputs although noisier than HDMI, allow for more detail whereas the HDMI does some weird stuff to high frequency signals (cross-color/luminance artifacts). It would appear that the set is doing something to the digital signal instead of displaying it natively (if feeding the set a 720P signal). More to follow, including grayscale before/after ...
chipvideo 08-01-05, 12:08 PM Ok I got my 4th 61z786. I do have one pixle on the bottom right quadrant that is red on a black screen. Changes color when watching movies. I guess I can deal with that. Every tv I got had at least one pixle out.
When watching letterbox movies I have a very thin green line about 1 foot long on the top left of the screenon the part where the movie screen ends and the black bars begin. It also is seen on the opposite side on the bottom. Is this normal and nothing to worry about. Oh and I see red as well on the opposite of that. I do know that my other tvs have always had this when watching letterbox movies. If this can be fixed I assume it is convergence.
This isn't a huge deal as it is only noticeable if you know where its at and look for it when 13 feet distance. Up close it is very noticeable. I just dont want to get too picky as I have gone through 4 sets and I am gettting tired of having to deal with having more brought out.
Also noticed that the set was very dusty when I got it. I wonder if any dust got inside the set as well and could be affecting my picture. It isn't as clear as the other ones.
This is a April build. I had two april builds and 2 June builds. The april builds appear to be not as clear in picture and the june builds look much better. Not as fuzzy. What could that mean.
I called up JVC about my sound problems last week. After talking for a few minutes, the JVC representive referred me to an authorized repair shop in my area. I have an appointment with them to come to my home and fix the sound. So far, the service has been good. I was afraid they'd make me do all kinds of things before getting someone to look at it.
Aside from that, I've been happy with the video so far. My settings for watching DVDs are:
picture mode: theatre
tint: +3
color: +2
picture: +0
brightness: -9
detail: -30
everything else off
I adjusted it with the digital video essentials DVD. My biggest problem/concern was getting the reds and greens to match up well when viewing through the filters provided. This is the first set I've tried to calibrate, so I'm not certain how close I should be expecting the colors to get. Unfortunately, I can't take a picture of it or anything, but I'm curious how close others typically get the colors to be. For me, they weren't off by too much, but I could tell a difference.
Watching the TV for about 2 weeks now, I've noticed a few things, both good and bad. The computer input, PS2 input, DVD menu inputs look REALLY REALLY nice. I'm assuming that's because they're digital pictures being displayed, so there's no real issue with problems in their looks.
With other analog inputs, I can notice some dithering at times. If I try to pay attention, I notice it, but if I don't pay attention, I don't tend to notice it. So I think I need to train myself to not pay attention to it. And it's only at certain times. Whenever the film has computer graphics in it, that always looks really nice.
One annoyance I have with the PC input is that it only accepts 640x480 and 1024x768. It would be nice if it accepted a 16:9 resolution instead of just 4:3 resolutions. I have some AVIs that are in 16:9. I found a player that can stretch it so it's output like anamorphic, but that player doesn't work as well as my normal one. It would have just made sense to me to have a 16:9 TV accept a 16:9 video signal. Oh well...

Yes, those settings were with my filter installed. I usually leave detail at -7, but I've been playing with it at or under 7 as well and left it there when I recorded my settings. I'll try it lower and see what happens. Weird about the HDMI issue. Let us know about the greyscale, I'd love to have a perfect greyscale, especially the last step before black.
I just got my 52G set and will have to pop out the Avia later tonight but a few things I can comment on-
-CA is about the same if not exactly the same as on the Z series. Now, I didn't notice it as much around white text as I did around dark objects against light backgrounds. Though it's only been 1 hour with the set, it needs to break it and i need to see more sources.
-Color banding is still there. However, it could be source related i'd have to check more content, DVD, HD, etc, but it was visible a few times.
-Natural Cinema seems to have changed. It was for OLD, real OLD film and only for certain rare instances was it needed. However, now it says for ANY film more or less so I'll leave it on for now and see what happens.
-Noise filter REALLY goes from noisy, soft to way too soft.
-Cabinet is a noticeably smaller size.
-Noise in dark shadowy areas don't seem as grainy or apparent. Though I need to see more before I say the mosquito noise is gone.
-Blacks seem blacker. I had my 52Z filtered, and this 52G isn't and yet the blacks look very deep during the day. I'll have to watch at time obviously and try different sources but I don't recall the Z model being this deep with the blacks.
Overall, nice. Not much in the way of improvements, it's more additions and a possible tweak here and there. I did seem to think that with Noise filter on LOW and detail cranked up some, there was a nice look to the picture. I'll listen out for the fan to see if it's quieter. CA and color banding are still present, but greyscale looks better. I didn't see as many crushed blacks while still maintaining a nice deep black. Though, the set hasn't broken it yet and I've only watched a few HD/SD channels. Also, noise from low lit scenes seem cleaner so far with limited viewing.
ETphoneHome 08-01-05, 03:10 PM DTVCity does not have the 786's in stock. I pre-ordered one from them last Friday and cancelled because BB had them available.I'm beginning to feel the "NY camera shop" experience from DTVCity. I called late in the afternoon on 7/20 and was told they had both the 52G786/886 in stock, ready to ship. I phoned in our order the morning of 7/21 and then was told black was not in stock but silver was. Black should be in in a couple of days. It is now 8/1 and today they are saying it should be in later this week.
I still feel it's still worth the over $600 savings to go with DTVCity vs. Best Buy's sale price (last I checked BB didn't have stock either), but looks like NY has moved to Atlanta, GA!

Do you have DVI out on your computer? You should be able to go from DVI to HDMI...
GBFreek 08-01-05, 05:18 PM Any truth to the massive pincushion effect that some report (and in the Sound & Vision Mag review) when watching SD?
darthrsg 08-01-05, 07:30 PM hey asudem your settings seem in line with mine they vary a little but pretty close, do you use theater pro for all viewing? gaming as well? i am split between standard and theater.
gobigreen 08-01-05, 08:13 PM Any truth to the massive pincushion effect that some report (and in the Sound & Vision Mag review) when watching SD?
I have a 70G886 and I do get some bowing at the edges watching SD when I am using my HDTivo satellite box (connected with HDMI). I do not get it with anything else I watch (including satellite if I hook up a different box through the component input). Thus my conclusion was that it was the HDTivo box causing the problem - but I don't know if this is correct - could be an issue with the input? All this being said, it doesn't bother my wife or me so I haven't tried to figure out the cause. In fact, my wife argued that the edge looked perfectly straight until I measured it and showed proof. The article in sound and vision mag indicates it is inherent in the sets' lens, or something to that effect, but I don't see how since I get straight edges when watching TV OTA or cable etc.
jeremytheys 08-01-05, 08:30 PM Help me guys. I need help hooking up a HD52G786. The manual says to use a splitter and run coax to both connectors on the back of the TV. I don't really understand why you should do this.
I had the Time Warner rep come by tonight and install a cablecard and had some problems. After swapping to a second cablecard because the first wouldn't get any channels, the second one will recognize what channels it should receive, but still doen't receive any digital channels. I have the splitter used with both outputs going into the 2 connections in the TV and am only getting the analog channels at this point.
I think my problems lie within the cablecard itself, but can anyone please explain to me the purpose of both caox connectors and why I should use both at once? I know one can be used to pick up the OTA HDTV channels while the other can be picking up the analog cable channels.
Anyone else have any sucess with a cablecard installation, possibly with TIme Warner cable??
gobigreen 08-01-05, 08:37 PM I tried to get a cable card (on more than one occasion) and they never could get it to work correctly. I could get most of the stations but could not get all of the HD channels. A co-worker of mine has had the cable card successfully installed - it did take 2 or 3 appointments for them to get it right though.
Kid Red 08-01-05, 09:29 PM Any truth to the massive pincushion effect that some report (and in the Sound & Vision Mag review) when watching SD?
It may or may not be accurate. I thought I had bowing on my Z series and I held a book up to the edge and it was straight. I'll do the same to mine.
Man, the blacks on the G series seem much deeper then the Z series. Also, it seems to have no black crush so far.
Hey KidRed, can you tell me abou the electronic program guide on the JVC. I can't find much on it. I assume the guide button on the remote pulls it up. Is it the TV Guide EPG? If not could you tell me how the guide works on the D'Ila and what you think of it. How far out does it pull guide info, a few hours or days? I'm pulling the trigger on either the 52"or 56" tomorrow and I'm psyched.

It took RCN 8 hours (and 4 techs) to get their card to work correctly with my set. After all that I decided to go with their DVR box for $7.00/month more than the cable card. The DVR is MUCH faster at switching channels than the JVC and the recording, fast forwarding, rewinding and pausing of any program is great.
Kid Red 08-02-05, 10:17 AM OK, I've had more time with my new G52 and I need to revise some earlier comments.
CA- while it's there, I guess, it is nearly absolutely invisible after 3'-4'. I sat about 4' away and watched SD, didn't really see any and then HD, and only saw it squinting and looking for it. Even then, it wasn't on every shot/clip or movie. I only saw it some times, really looking for it and even then I could barely see it. So, after the set was on for a few hours, CA is no longer an issue.
Blacks seem definitely darker on this then on my Z52. Not sure what they did but my screen looks different. I have an issue with my screen (noted below) and thing they changed something about it. It's also a darker screen, whereas the Z model was greyer if I recall. Maybe they added a screen matte thing? I may not even have to mod this one, blacks are damn near acceptable for me.
Colors- They look, I'm not sure, brighter? More brilliant? Watching HD "Best Beaches" was nothing short of jaw dropping. The colors, the clarity, the deep blacks, I was impressed by it and the tells me there is some slight improvements over the Z series.
I may have to return this unit because the screen has a slight (very) slight impression that creates a U shaped rainbow about 2 ihink they made a new screen which may improve the blacks. This rainbow U doesn't affect the picture, but I'm anal about haset looking for CA, I didn't I also have a broken on/off painbow U doesn't affect the picture, but I'm anal about having a flawless quality product. I also have a broken on/off pixel that shows red. I only saw it sitting 4' in front of the set looking for CA, I didn't even know it was there. But combined with the rainbow U thing, I think I'll return the set for another one.
Kid Red 08-02-05, 10:19 AM Gulley- I didn't mess with the EPG, honestly I didn't know it had one. That would explain the splitter they provide, which I did not hook up. I use my cable's guide which is gold to me. I can check the manual if you have any questions, but without that splitter hooked up I don't think I have the guide on my TV (but I will check to verify).
videobruce 08-02-05, 10:27 AM Kid Red; you exchanged this from last years model??
If you turn the noise filter off and turn the sharpness down, how does that look regarding the noise issue? When I saw my first one (56") the first thing I noticed was the sharpness. It was too much for even me and I usually perfer a 'sharper' image (vs the film look).
How about the fan noise others complained about? Better, the same or worse?Any truth to the massive pincushion effect that some report (and in the Sound & Vision Mag review) when watching SD?I don't beleive they claimed it was "massive", just noticeable. I have seen it here and with other sets also.

Using the cablecard currently on my 56G. The cable coming out of the wall needs to be split with one line going to the "digital cable" input and the other going to the regular cable input. The regular cable input will give you all of your analog stuff and the other line will give you your digital channels and HD. Weird setup, I know.

Yes, 3 light engine replacements and JVC allowed me to wait 3 months to upgrade to the G series :) Why do you think I approve of JVC so much?
Ah the fan, my bad, Yes, the fan is quieter. I would say about 30% quieter. You can still hear it, but it's not the blower that it once was.
The new noise filter, man does it take noise out. It's like Photoshop's noise filters, (it has low, medium, high and auto) even going to low takes a ton of stuff out and makes it soft. If you like soft, you'd love the new G models. With even the low setting s and then taking detail down, you should be able to achieve a pic to your liking. I keep it on auto, usually to finally get one. I like the blacks enough to where I'm not really thinking of modding the set. Of course that might change ostreply
videobruce 08-02-05, 12:25 PM If you like soft, you'd love the new G models.I don't, which is why I turn it off.
lorenzow 08-02-05, 12:51 PM The 52G and 56G models and manual are now available on the JVC.com site.
Kid Red 08-02-05, 01:28 PM I don't, which is why I turn it off.
I misunderstood your last sentence. Yes, you can get a nice image. I turn OFF noise like Inoted except for SD and lower detail and get a nice clean detailed picture. I also haven't noticed the noise crawl theore. There is a tad graininess to the picture, but that grain does not move or crawl like it did before.
dapercy 08-02-05, 04:19 PM Noob Question Here - Bought my 52G Yesterday and will be here on the 9th.
What is CA? I know it is somewhere in this thread, but didn't see it on the last few pages.
Cyclonus 08-02-05, 04:23 PM Here's a strange new development... I just called up DTVCity and the guy there told me that they were out of stock on the 56 inch "G" model D-ILA's, and wouldn't be getting any more because JVC wants to concentrate on the 1080p models going forward. Anyone know anything about this?
desertracer 08-02-05, 04:46 PM Just come back from BB. I was looking at the 52" (527BP6) 'cos my ent center opening is only 52.75". The 56" will barely fit it, but the stand is wider than my opening. I thought the stand for the 52" will be smaller. Unfortunately, 52" and 56" share the same stand and the local BB don't sell the TV alone. uhhh... I can fit the TV but not the stand...
SouthBark 08-02-05, 05:04 PM The stand is "free" so either don't use it or sell it on ebay, etc.

You should be able to get the TV itself without the stand... it's possible that the guy at Best Buy just doesn't realize it because for a limited time, the stand comes free with the TV... so it would be the same price either way.
Additionally, just about everyone here who's seen the stand seems to think it's rather shoddy, and not the sort of thing you'd want to place a $2500 piece of equipment on... so you may be better off just getting the TV alone and employing some other means of supporting it.
gfoulks 08-02-05, 05:52 PM who has bought one of these DILA's from an online store? how did it go? what online store did you use?
redsoxrule 08-02-05, 06:17 PM Here's a strange new development... I just called up DTVCity and the guy there told me that they were out of stock on the 56 inch "G" model D-ILA's, and wouldn't be getting any more because JVC wants to concentrate on the 1080p models going forward. Anyone know anything about this?
As I had just placed an order for the 56" yesterday with them, I was pretty surprised by what you said. So I gave them a call and sure enough, you are right. The 56" is out of stock and they don't expect any more. The new 1080p models will be showing up in Sept. sometime.
So, I've got to decide whether to wait or look elsewhere, but $**** delivered is hard to beat. DTV City doesn't know yet the price of the 1080p models, but the latest and greatest always seems to cost more.

That's rediculous, why did they ever carry them in the first place? It's been a couple weeks at most.
And they took your order as if they were still selling them?

Was cheaper and went flawless...Vanns.com
Zebulun 08-02-05, 06:55 PM This may have been asked before, but what side are the input/outputs on? I'm trying to figure necessary cable length. Were any pictures of the back provided?

The prices are on their website for the 1080p sets --when you click on a mod. it will show the price even though it says $0 after the mod. #

Kid Red 08-02-05, 08:10 PM Noob Question Here - Bought my 52G Yesterday and will be here on the 9th.
What is CA? I know it is somewhere in this thread, but didn't see it on the last few pages.
Color Aberration. It's a situation that the green, red and blue do not exactly align. So you end up with a green pixel outline on one side and a purple pixel outline on the other. The Z series had it, tho it wasn't really bad, the G series seems to have improved handling the problem.

They are on the back bottom right if you are facing the TV.

I got my 52g from dtvcity...smooth as glass with no problems. I selected curb side delivery....driver helped me from the truck to the garage where he let me 'debox' it for inspection. This was required by DTVCITY before accepting (signing) for delivery.
the64gto 08-02-05, 08:48 PM Also got the free stand, with no shipping charges. It sits in the garage, will figure something to do with it.
dapercy 08-02-05, 10:17 PM Haven't gotten my 52G yet but it shipped today (Ordered Yesterday) from BuyDig.com. That site has an extremely high rating on shopzilla.com with over 100k reviews.
ETphoneHome 08-03-05, 08:14 AM Hey the64gto, when did you order? I ordered on 7/21 and my 52" JVC still hasn't shipped yet.
If DTVCity can't ship by this Thursday, I may just go with buydig.com. I ordered from buydig once before with no problems.
EDIT: I just canceled my order with DTV. I phoned them and asked when they would get the 52G786 in stock, they said they had no idea. This is after stringing me along for 2 weeks saying "any day now, maybe tomorrow." I am paying $31 more and don't get the free stand, but I don't need the stand anyway and want to get the TV now. It should be here by this time next week. In case anyone is considering buydig, the sales rep told me it was a hot item and they only had 2 left. Oops, make that only 1 left ... ;)
buydig.com is the same as Beach Camera. I have ordered a couple things from Beach with no problems whatsoever. Definitely an e-tailer worth looking in to.
redsoxrule 08-03-05, 10:06 AM Yup, BuyDig to the rescue. A reputable dealer and only a few bucks higher than DTVCity - no stand, but that wasn't too important to me.
