View Full Version : New Philips set 30pw9110d
My thanks to those who contribute to this forum: I couldn't fix the tilted picture on my new set and Philips 2nd Level was no help (I won't event go into the retail repair shop they offered up to me). But suffice to say they neglected to tell me (nor does the User Manual state) that one must be in ANALOG mode (AV1 or AV2) to see the 'Rotation' option under the Menu 'Features' which allows corretion of the problem.
something came up at the last minute and i was unable to buy the 30pw9110d. its postponed for a couple of months so i decided to just pick up a SDTV to replace my Sanyo. i decided to go with a 24 inch philips. i think the model number is 24pt6341. its a great set, but i have a few issues with it. the most blaring issue is that the picture randomly gets really bright (it looks awesome when it does this) and then gets extremely dim. it gets really aggravating. my only other issue (which is minor) is lack of better picture settings, namely the fact that you cant adjust the sharpness on the component input. not a big issue, but my dvds look a bit blurry and i cant do a thing about it. has anyone experienced any of these problems with the 30pw9110d

" I dont beleive so, since the incoming signal will be interlaced I dont see how it can turn it into a true progressive signal, but someone more technical might be able to give a definite answer"
The Trident board does the job. You clearly see this if you send an interlaced signal to the TV. Put some dvd subtitle on the screen, you will not see the scanning lines in subtitles even if the signal is not progressive. Of course, the de-interlacer in the trident board is not so good as that one in a dvd player.
But the strange thing to me is the service manual. The service manual says the every signal (VCI, RF,SVID etc) that arrives is upconverted to 1080i.

Wouldn't surprise me, I think most TVs convert to their native res rather than having multiple scan rates. Shouldn't matter so long as the TV can resolve enough lines. Can it resolve 480 lines per field at least? I doubt 720 is doable without information loss, but I don't think any CRT TV can.

That is correct (Upconversion to 1080i). Like all HDTVs, Phillips has a native resolution. Like most, if not all, CRTs, this TV's native resolution is 1080i. I had posted previously that this system accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i and converts it to 1080i. You are also correct in that the board that does this conversion in the TV is not the best board, so when you receive a signal that is 480i, it probably looks really bad. There is no way to get a true progressive scan on this TV, but inputs from progressive sources do look pretty good on this TV, i.e., Fox OTA is broadcast in 720p and looks beautiful on this TV.
Hope this helps.

ok, thanks. sharpness can be adjusted on all inputs on the 30pw9110d though, right?

I have not played with it to see if it input specific (some of the newer TVs are), but yes, regardless of the input, you can adjust all possible picture settings.
chizito 06-28-06, 07:06 PM Are there any options for audio out with this tv? My old RCA had it but I don't see it anywhere on the 9100. I have a receiver and some speakers and want to hear tv broadcasts and my movies and video games through my tv and my speakers.
Coleparmer 06-28-06, 11:42 PM Have you experienced lost of signal while using the component video input with a 480p signal ? Here we have this problem. Sometimes the tv shows a blue screen with OSD displaying 480i and returns automatically to 480p. This is not a DVD or player issue, this happens randomly with dvd disks and players. I was checking the service manual, and there is something strange to me. Why the G sinal from CVI input is not amplified for tv with hdmi input (page 68) ? For me it should be independent, the signal G from CVI should be amplified no matter if the TV set has HDMI or not.
Can someone with electronics skills explain me that ?

It has a digital coax output for digital sound, but no rca analog sound outputs.
quickfire 07-01-06, 11:55 PM ORYAN_DUNN????I have a few questions to ask you & hope you have time to answer for me......Ok I will be buying either the Philips or Sanyo 30 HDTV from Wal-Mart to use in the Bedroom!
Question #1 Will either of these tv's built in HDTV tuners accept a HD feed that is 8vsb?I receive this thru my cable company and Im able to get it to work with the Samsung 150 OTA HD tuner!!
Question #2 If I have to use the samsung 150 to get my local HD channels!!!I will have 3 pieces of equipment going into the tv ....which are Samsung 160 D* HD receiver(with DVI),Samsung 150 OTA HD tuner & a Sony dvd mega changer!!!
I want the Samsung D* receiver to use the HDMI input and have the others use the component connections.....Question #3 do both of these sets have 2 HD component inputs?
Question #4 Were would I get the sound from if I use the HDMI for the D* receiver does it have its own set of RCA jacks or would i have to use one of the components RCA jacks??
I hope you can answer these questions!!!!!I dont want to get the Sanyo or Philips home and realize it wont work with my equipment the way I want it too!
Thanks in advance.....quickfire
The Phillips 30PW9110D will not be carried at Wal-Mart anymore. The 30 inch Sanyo will still be on the modular.
oryan_dunn 07-05-06, 11:53 AM Update:
I've got my server back up, but it's at a new IP:
http://12.206.130.40/PhilipsSM/
I should have it back on the old IP soon, but I've had so many requests for manuals, I figured it was easier to put it back up temporarily.

Eh, went to Walmart, took a look at both, noticed the Philips had a slightly better picture (text was much sharper on the philips than the sanyo, though both were being fed grainy, low res signals) and a better brand name, and bought the philips over the $50 cheaper Sanyo. (though I saw another walmart that had it for $100 cheaper....somewhat tempting, but at least philips is somewhat of a brand name, even though based on the selection of stuff at walmart, the LG name seems to be taking over the high end while relegating philips to the low-end, I guess kind of like how magnavox became philip's low-end)
chizito 07-06-06, 07:19 PM just got a comcast cable box with dvi to hdmi, picture but no sound. Why??
jedurocher 07-06-06, 08:54 PM just got a comcast cable box with dvi to hdmi, picture but no sound. Why??
DVI only cares the video signal. You will also need to run RCA cables into your TV for sound or the digital out to your receiver.
Ok, finally got my TV setup. Now, I don't have digital cable, but is it possible for me to get the over the air digital channels? I've tried scanning for them with no cable hooked up, but get nothing, and I've tried scanning for them with the cable hooked up from the VCR. I'm guessing I probably can't get a good enough signal, but it'd be nice if I could get them. It'd be nice if the OTA digital signals were carried by the cable.
bigjb419 07-07-06, 02:43 PM I just bought a 30pw9110d two days ago and I noticied something strange. Right now I have directv hooked up to the TV through Svideo unti my High Def tivo comes on Monday. When I turn my TV on in the morning for the first time the picture is in black and white. If I scroll through the video inputs until I get back to Svideo the picture comes back in color. Hasn't gone to black and white when watching TV for an exteded period yet. Anyone else have this problem?

But from where to where? I tried running the red and whites from digital component audio in to audio out on my comcast cable box and got nothing.
:(
Also, next to my HDMI input on the back of my tv (the 9100) there is a plug hole for something, and it could be some kind of audio but I am not sure.
Oh and I can use my components for my cable box and everything works fine but I want the digital component inputs for my xbox 360 and analog component for my xbox.
Hey I'm new to this forum and I just want to know what is the resolution on this the Philips 30pw9110d. I was reading some reviews on it and it was given a rather poor review and it was mentioned that the resoluiton was 868x480. I checked online and I called Philips and the resoultion on this CRT. Is it really HD? What is the resolution? Thanks.
Drizzel 07-12-06, 08:20 PM Yes its HD.. It does 480p, 1080i and upconverts 720p. I've had this tv about 10 months now and I love it. Great TV for the price ;)

If you go to this link: Phillips USA (http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/3/30pw9100d_37/30pw9100d_37_qsg_aen.pdf) you can get the quickstart guide for your TV.
I think, with your setup, you may have a few problems. The biggest is sound from your Cable box. Being that you want to use the HD CVI for your xbox360, and you only have a DVI out on the cable box, you will not be able to listen to the cable without running a digital out to your receiver. IMHO, that is going to be an issue, unless you either get a splitter or xbox creates a CVI to HDMI cable...which I do not think exists, but again, I could be way off base.
Sorry that I was not more help. :(

Not to be a punk, but the 30pw9110 is a native resolution of 1080i. It upconverts any other signal that is not native that is input into it (480i,480p,720p), except 540p. But overall, YES SIRRY BOB, it surely is HD.

Are you sure it can't also do 480p native? Not that it really matters since 1080i is so much higher res than 480p. BTW, I've noticed that 480i on this set looks much better than 480i I've seen on PC or other sets when converted to a progressive signal. It appears to have no lag, and only very slight jittering.

3. Geometry
By adjust service menu using AVIA, you can get perfect geometry on this set.
Here is my setting:

HB 7
HSH 94
EWW 86
EWP 23
EWT 77
UCP 31
LCP 9
EWS 0
EWC 16
Vertical
VSH 67
VAM 44
VSC 39
VX 0
VSL 116
VL 16
Hope this help.
Terrible settings.. dont use them! The person must of been torched when they came up with that. Good thing I wrote down my original settings.
Anyone have the right calibration settings for the 30PW9110D? Mine is a little bit too high in the right corner and I cant find the setting to adjust that specific area.
oryan_dunn 07-13-06, 10:49 AM You've got to remember that the geometry settings for one TV will most likely be junk for another, even of the same exact model. You cannot just step in and use someone else's settings, because each TV will be different, each TV will have the physical knobs inside adjusted slightly different, each TV will have capacitors and resistors that will vary slightly possibly affecting how the electron beam behaves.

Yes. I quoted the service manual on this earlier in the post. It only produces 1080i. I also agree that while some say the Standard definition broadcasts look bad on this TV, I have found mine to be relatively decent, but if the source is bad, the upscaling taking place makes it absolutely horrible.

I went to one walmart, they were down to the display model but said they were due to get more in. I went to another, and they had tons of this set.
BTW, I just got a powered antenna (indoors, though it is freaking huge), and while it's neat that for a one-time fee of $40 I can get high definition channels (though the best any signal comes in on the tv is yellow, none show up as green strength), is there anything high-def worth watching on over the air channels? For that matter, is there very much hi-def content? PBS looked extremely nice, and some of the news channels looked good (though it looked more like high def text and overlays with standard def or slightly above standard def news-casters), but most of the stuff looked barely better than the philips sdtv I have setup right next to it, even the ones listed as hdtv.

Target still has the 9100D set in Nashville. Don't know if they intend to keep it in inventory, though I've noticed that the model no longer shows up on their webpage. My 30PW8420 is a refurb unit came from Philips Outlet, and, as I've said before, not only is the price the best, but my unit looks and continues to perform like brand-new.
Concerning antennas, I'd recommend getting an outdoor antenna, mounted high. My 15-year-old Radio Shack model is in the attic, and it pulls in beautiful HD material from several stations. Though much digital broadcasting is still SD, particularly in prime time you can find a good many HD shows. For that matter, most of the sports broadcasts I've seen (I'm not a soccer fan though) have been in HD.
I can't speak for the performance of the 9100/9110 models, but on my 8420 with external tuner, the difference in PQ over 480i SD is significant. SD material displayed at 1080i looks much better, to my eye.

Oh, I get all the major stations and I get the HD content during primetime, just the little TV I watched over cable generally wasn't on the main networks and local stations. I have no idea what good shows are shown.
Ok, first impressions (picked up the last one at Walmart for 526. Actually checked out 4 stores before I found one. I was aware of the issues reported, but since it is going to be used in the bedroom, I figure I'll make the best of it.
*Out of the box: Beautiful tv. Gotta love the black and sleek design :) Fit perfectly in our tv armoir.
*Only played with it for about 5 minutes, since it was late at night yesterday. Note I use Dish Network SD (pvr), and a mediocre s-video cable (not a really crappy one, but hardly good quality either..). have not hooked up antenna for hd yet.
*first channel I looked at, played swordfish (oh and the volume by default was so loud it almost woke up my daughter in the next room, since I managed to turn it on exactly when there was a huge explosion..). Extremely green tinted picture, then I remembered it is indeed a green tint on scenes in that movie. Still, colors not that good compared to my other tv's out of the box.
*second channel - forest gump, noticed the halo effect right away, though colors seemed more decent here. Don't think the wife noticed it though. I'll have to calibrate and see if I can get rid of most of it, plus perhaps hook up a better cable.
I'll give some opinions when I have played around more.
-Tom
I'd recommend setting color temperature to cool.
Watched about an hour on the tv yesterday. Colors seemed ok - but I can see the halo/ghost effect on everything. Still not had a chance to calibrate it or anything, so I'm hopefule it will be minimized. Overall, the picture is decent for SD, though the halo's bother me. My wife did not comment at all, which I find curious, since it is so obvious to me (but then again, I'm perhaps fixated on it after reading this 20 page thread :)
Is this 'VSM' thing what is causing it? Definitely seems like over-sharpening or some kind of faulty processing. I don't think it is convergence issues, since I have a CRT back projection unit, and I know what that looks like when it is not right.
If VSM is it, someone mentions cutting a wire inside the tv. Was that just a hunch, or can someone explain how to go about doing it. I may try it... I also downloaded the service manual, so I guess I can do some exploration there.
My next update will be after I figure out how to calibrate this the best way.

I'm in the same boat as tomes here. I've had my TV for a few months now and it's been nothing but trouble. I took it in to a place for a warranty work, but they said it was fine. Aside from the ghost effect, there appears to be a convergence problem. For example, every deep red has a green halo to the right of it. How can I adjust this? And what's this about VSM and cutting a wire? I'm about ready to throw this TV in the pool, so I'll try anything.
I know how to get into the service menu, but that doesn't help much with my problems. Is there any other information in the service manual? The site linked is down and I can't download it -- can I PM someone my email address and get it sent to me?
Thanks!

I just bought the 30pw9110d yesterday but I cant get it to turn on. When I push the power switch the light just flashes periodically. It sounds like its on because you hear the sound of the tubes, but no picture. I dont know if it's damaged or if it's something im not doing right. It is not connected to the cable box, I dont know if that would make a difference. I also tried connecting it to the xbox 360 via the HD cables, still nothing. Can someone give me a hand? Thanks
Joe
You could try to turn it on (again) using the power button on the remote, if you think the main power button (on the tv) is on. Other than that, hit 'av' and select the component you selected, or go to the tuner to see if you get anything. You could try to hit the menu button as well, I guess, to see if anything shows up..
When I took it out of the box a few days ago - I did not touch the tv power button, just hit the remote, and it started up. Got a message 'signal to weak' since it was set to tuner.
Note that only one set of component cables support HD, so you may want to check the manual to make sure you plugged your 360 in the correct input.
slowkums 07-18-06, 06:40 PM I've had a 30pw8420 since april now, and in the past few weeks i've noticed a high-pitched whine that varies in frequency and comes and goes on occasion. I think it happens mostly when my xbox 360 is on. Cycling the power doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone else had this problem?
Sure it's not a problem with your powerline or something? I just got my tv, so I haven't heard anything yet, even if it could be a issue.

darkmuck 07-20-06, 03:47 PM I've read that this TV (30pw9110d) only supports 1080i via the HDMI input, and it only supports 480p/i thru the component. I am going to be using an xbox 360 for this TV an i was wondering if anyone knew for sure that the component inputs will give me 1080i. I've been deciding between this TV (30pw9110d) and the samsung TXS3082W. I know the samsung has a better display I've seen them side by side, but I can get the phillips brand new for $526 at walmart. If it does do the 1080i it looks like I'll be getting the phillips.
The manual isn't entirely clear on this, and I haven't tested, but I believe the case is that it has 2 component inputs, but only one can do progressive or 1080i.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong though...
jedurocher 07-20-06, 04:26 PM I have posted this before, but it was a ways back and a lot of people have been asking about this recently.
Here is a direct quote from the service manual: "The ATSC Tuner and 1fH to 2Fh conversion is performed on the ATSC module. Component inputs for the CVI HD and HDMI are located on the ATSC module. This input can accept 480i, 480p, 1080i, or 720p signals. The ATSC module converts whatever signal is applied to a 1080i format. The ATSC tuning system can tune all channels in the VHF, UHF, and Cable bands."

If you are comparing the two televisions, read some of the posts about the TXS3082W. There are other issues with it. I posted the response about the inputs in a separate post so everyone can search for it more easily. 1080i Native Resolution and Input Resolutions (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8044046&&#post8044046)
Darkmuck, I made my decision, like you, based on price. I have really enjoyed my television and fortunately, I have not had some of the problems others in the forum are having. I did buy the 2 year extended warranty for the TV through Wal-Mart. I looked at both side-by-side as well at CC. I found the Samsung had better blacks, but I noticed the geometry problems that occur with the slimfit CRTs. I also liked the softer, more photo-like picture of the Phillips. It is a great TV if you are using an external tuner, but I have not had much luck with the internal one. Hope this does not confuse you and you can enjoy HDTV soon.
darkmuck 07-20-06, 06:32 PM thanks jedurocher, you'e pretty much helped me make up my mind :-) How much is the service plan at walmart? I know ccity is around $100 (wiht my discount) for 5 years

It was $68 for 2 years...if I recall. I still believe that most electronics, if they are going to break, will break within the first 90 days of purchase, or they will just wear out. I used to work at BB and most of the stuff that was brought back for repair was either within 90 days of purchase, or about to fall out of the service plan. If I remember correctly, most people that have had issues with the TV, had them within a few months of purchase.
Enjoy!!
harpeth 07-21-06, 02:22 PM For my refurbed Philips 30PW8420, which I got from Philips Outlet, I got a three-year warranty from Penn Warranty for $59. I did it all over the internet and one phone call that the company placed to me. If I remember right, Philips offered me the same length of coverage for $223, though I think that warranty covered the picture tube, while the Penn policy doesn't.
edster922 07-21-06, 03:37 PM Not sure if "screen geometry" is the right word to use, but what I'm seeing with my brand new Toshiba 30HF66 widescreen is that the black bars at the top of the screen when in widescreen mode and the black bars at the side of the screen when in 4:3 mode are not straight but crooked and/or curvey.
Do these Phillips widescreen tubes have the same problem?
Is this problem generally a fact of life with any CRT display that I just have to learn to live with?
harpeth 07-21-06, 05:02 PM My Philips 30PW8420 has the same problem on the sides when displaying bright images. I've found that turning down the brightness minimizes it. I've also read here that for the Philips sets this can be corrected in the service menu, though I haven't tried that. Most of what we watch is in widescreen, so I don't pay much attention to the 4:3 problem.
motorpotor 07-29-06, 08:34 PM Hey I wanted to know what the overall consensus is on the Philips 30PW9110D/37 30 in hdtv. Im really thinking of getting it. Walmart sells it for 526 and CC said theyd pricematch. recommendations
what does CC pricematch do? go below that price?
by the way guys, how is this tv when connected to pc by hdtv-out from video card? what resolution should it be sent out at, 1080i or 720p? playing pc games on this thing, if setting nvidia or ati resolution to 1080i should your video card upscale game resolutions of say 1280x720 to 1080i?
i know most pc games support this resolution, 1280x720, how good do these games look on hdtv crts via tv-out from good video cards?
motorpotor 07-30-06, 04:41 AM pricematch means they will sell you the product for the same price tha the other store sells it at
motorpotor 07-31-06, 01:45 AM I picked up this tv today open box from CC. They had it going for 399 and it was 499 the day before. I haggled them down to 350. Which seems lieka good deal. but im debatin if i should return it for a closed box

motorpotor 07-31-06, 02:58 PM oh snappage
so is it true, that this tv only outputs 1080i when hd source is coming from the component input?
thanks
goombatommy 07-31-06, 11:27 PM As long as this TV does 720p for my Xbox 360 I'm fine.

Do you find that 1080i looks better than 480p when viewing DVDs?
jedurocher 08-01-06, 05:07 PM Do you find that 1080i looks better than 480p when viewing DVDs?
Of course :D 1080i is HD resolution. A normal progressive plan DVD player (480p) will look pretty good. The TV will upconvert to the 1080i, but I have an Oppo DVD player which does a better job of upconverting the DVDs to 1080i than the television does. The picture is spectacular!
The thing about the TV is that the native resolution is 1080i. Any of the mentioned resolutions that are recognized by the TV will be converted to 1080i. If the picture quality of a non-HD signal is bad, the conversion makes it look horrible. The TV does a better job of converting digital signal to 1080i than analog.
If there is anything else, let me know.

well, my Toshiba 30HF66 only allows 2 resolutions: 1080i and 540p. Sometimes the 540p looks better, esp. with DVD copies of VHS originals...which look much better on my old SDTV Panasonic of course.
Also I was wondering: if the TV already upconverts to 1080i, is there any advantage with using an upconverting DVD-P with HDMI? I wonder how the Oppo compares to other upconverting DVD-Ps that have been coming down in price lately, like the Sonys and Samsungs...

That is resolution input, correct?
Since the TV's native resolution is 1080i, anything resolution that it receives is automatically upconverted. You have no control over that. The advantage of having an upconverting DVD player is that they usually, not always, but usually do a better job of upconversion than what the TVs can do. Thus sending it to the TV in it's native resolution keeps the interlacing and deinterlacing down.
As for the 30PW9110, my Oppo does a much better job upconverting to 1080i than the television does, even though it is specifically designed for progressive scan capabilities, so I use it instead of inputting a, say 480p, signal.
I do not have any experience with Sony or Samsung DVD players, but I think you can get a good amount of information for other threads in this forum.

So you notice a visible improvement with the Oppo doing 1080i than 480p going to your TV? I've heard a lot about the Oppos, may have to try one out myself...

Yes, the Oppo just does a better job of conversion. When I first got it, I could only get it to work in 480p...long story posted here and on the Oppo thread...Anyway, I watched Serenity. It was much better than I ever had before, but when I actually watched it in 1080i upconverted, it looked even better. With Oppo doing the work, it was a pass thru and it looked great.
It really, as any thread will say, depends on what you really like. We have a buttload of digital movies, i.e., The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Toy Story, that look absolutely 3 dimensional and realistic. It is amazing the things you notice in HD!
Besides, Oppo has the best customer service I have ever worked with and they do regular Firmware updates allowing for growth of the player that Sony and others do not. Try it, and if you do not like it, return it. Plus, when they have them, you can get an Oppo refurb for $160 with the same warranty as one that is full priced.

What about non-digital movies? DVD copies of VHS originals? I often watch foreign, arthouse, and vintage films whose technology is not quite up to par with today's mass-market blockbusters. Do you think I'd see as big an improvement using an Oppo with those movies?

I have not done that, but I would check out the following thread or ask the question here. There is a huge amount of knowledge and friendliness on this thread: Oppo DV971H FAQ / Brain Dump (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=491306)
I hope that it helps. The movies I have watched that were not blockbusters, i.e., Quantum Leap series, still look good with the Oppo and 30PW9110...If you have any more questions, I would really look at asking them at the above thread.
edster922 08-02-06, 12:26 PM thanks, I'll go to that thread.
harpeth 08-03-06, 04:54 PM I don't have experience with an Oppo, but the LG LST-3510A that we use with our 30PW8420 is another player that does a great job of upconverting. The LG will output at 480p, 720p, and 1080i. The TV will only display at 480p or 1080i, so viewing options are more limited. 1080i is so vivid, though, that we leave our unit on that setting. Another plus of the LG is that it's a combo digital tuner and DVD player.
We got a set of the first season Numb3rs DVDs, and the image produced by the LG/Philips combination is stunning. The shows seem to look as good as the actual HD broadcasts on CBS. My son is currently going thru the agony of August two-a-day football practice. The last couple of nights he's flopped down on the couch and the DVD of choice has been one of the Numb3rs discs. I watched part of one last night. They come off as really colorful and highly detailed, thanks to the output of the LG and the display capabilities of the Philips.

Thanks John,
It is good to read other input about DVD players that work well with the Philips. I have my experience with my Oppo and it is just as wonderful. As I tell everyone, it is like buying a car. If you feel you got a good deal, then the deal was good and no one should tell you otherwise. Same with the TV and DVD player. If it looks good to you, and your family enjoys it....then it is right for you.

Sorry no one has responded, but I am not sure of the answer. I have not noticed there being a difference, but there may be. :(
Ghengis042 08-25-06, 09:18 AM I ordered the 9110d/37B set when it was listed on TechBargains, and it just came yesterday... DOA! Plugged in, turned on... green light is solid... green light is blinking... nothing happens. I tried a few more times just to be sure I didn't misunderstand something -- Philips support site said it can take up to 20 seconds to power on. I waited a minute.
Eventually, I called Philips support. They ran me through the usual script, then gave me the name of a local service center. I called the guy, and he literally said, "It's going to be a *hellish nightmare*. It's going to be a hellish nightmare for you, and for me. I had a guy two weeks ago, same problem as you -- Philips set -- and it still won't work right. Send it back. I don't care what you have to do, get them to exchange it, because your set will *never* work."
Then, I had a flashback to the beginning of this thread, which I had read before deciding to buy. I had thought, "Oh, there's dozens of people who are saying they got one and like it, and it's a great value for the money, yadda yadda...", and talked myself into ignoring the people who said Philips sucks. The service guy says to me, "Did you get it refurb? Yeah? Oh, that's a bad idea -- probably somebody returned it, they looked at it, said 'Seems fine!', and sent it to you. Don't buy refurb. Get a Sony." Sounds like he could have been one of the posters in the first few pages of this thread.
I'm calling the online store customer service today (as opposed to the tech support line) and asking if they can do an exchange; if not, their policy page says they will do a return on defective merch for the first 30 days -- a fact their tech support is completely unaware of -- so I'll see if I can exchange instead of return. I'll follow up here when I have a resolution.
Long story short: a.) The TV might be a great value for the money; I'll let you know if I get to find out. b) Philips Outlet may be a good place to get a deal, if you're willing to wait a month to have it ship out, be broken, ship back, then get your replacement. Again, I'll let you know.
General Klinger 08-27-06, 03:50 PM So mine came today. No problems to report. I bought it refurbed, so it has a few light scratches on it but the picture is gorgeous. I do have one interesting dilemma though.
Since the tv has only 1 HD CVI input, and I wan't to run my XBox and my DVR box to get the HD picture, can I just buy a splitter like below and that will work? I have to switch back and forth from the back of the TV to get HD from either. Thanks :)

Ghengis042 08-27-06, 07:35 PM Follow-up: put in for a return; the original courier is going to pick it back up. The CS rep told me they'd issue a special promo code so I can use the expired discount to buy another one the same way I did the first -- kind of nice since it'll re-start the warranty period. I'm debating whether to re-buy it or not; this has obviously left a bad taste for refub in my mouth...
mikefictitious 08-28-06, 06:58 PM I just got a botched set too. I ordered from Philips Outlet because I couldn't pass up $412 shipped ($75 off).
Mine stays on for about 5 minutes then turns white and powers off (green power light flashing). If you turn it on right away, it goes white again and powers off. If you wait about 5 minutes, it will run for 5 more minutes before turning off. Sounds like it's overheating or something to me.
I called tech support and got India. It was pretty infuriating with a bad cell connection and a heavy accent, but he basically told me I had to fax them my receipt. Apparently my serial number is out of warranty, so they need me to fax them the receipt to refresh it. Then they told me I had to take it to one of two service places 20+ miles away.
I'm going to call CS like you did, Ghengis. There is no chance I am driving all over town with a TV that I can barely lift by myself.
I can't decide if it is worth it to buy another. It took a week from order to arrival. I think I'd just rather go with a guaranteed working product.
GrantMeThePower 08-29-06, 09:56 PM My friend just got this TV. It looks good on HD sources, but def. shows the ghosting on SD and 480p input (at least through the CVI input).
i was messing with the screen geometry in the system menu and then all of the sudden the tv turned off. I tried turing it back on but that wouldnt work, so I unplugged it and tried again...it turned on for a couple seconds(with a blank screen) and heard some clicking sound then turned off and the green light blinked periodically. I tried it again several times and the same thing happened. When i was messing with the geometry, i had one of the vertical settings all the way to the right when the tv first turned off. So I dont know if it had anything to do with that, or it just happened. I know this thing has also happened to several other people. If anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me. Thanks
General Klinger 09-03-06, 10:20 AM Well i've had my TV a week, and haven't had any of the problems yet. I purchased a 2 year warranty too, so at least I am covered :)
toothpickbob 09-04-06, 07:51 AM I don't know if has already been answered or not.
First, I've seen a couple people post about a service menu? How do you access this?
Second, does anyone here know the actual screen resolution? I took an extremely close-up picture of the bottom-right corner and counted off a section, then used it to estimate something around 650 pixels vertically. Isn't it supposed to be 1080? I know my estimation isn't exact, but it can't be off by that much.
And finally, while examining the photo and the screen, I noticed a couple of things. Each pixel seams to be made up of 3 smaller "sub-pixels", 1 red, 1 green, and 1 blue. This I understand. The pixels on the edge of the screen are farther apart than the pixels in the center. The pixels seem to be more rectangular than square, moreso near the edge of the screen again. And also, the pixels aren't aligned horizontally. The pixels are sort of in diagonal rows. The picture isn't crooked, mind you. But I thought they would be lined up horizontally. They are lined up vertically. Is this normal?
Finally, I'm noticing what I guess is called "ghosting". Its particularly noticeable when playing a video game or whenever text is displayed on the screen. Its like a faint, darker copy of the image appears slightly (2-4 pixels maybe?) offset to the left, and a faint, but brighter copy of the image appears slightly ofset to the right (maybe 1-2 pixels). It generally makes things a little blurry looking, and I've tried messing with all of the standard settings, but haven't had any success. I have noticed that it's visibility varries sometimes.
Can anyone help me?

It's 1080i not 1080p. Interlaced, not progressive. So that's 540 actual lines that make 1080 interlaced lines. Whether or not it actually has 540 actual lines I'm not sure, but that's how many lines a 1080i TV is nominally supposed to have. The only 1080p screens out there are the latest generation of non-CRT based HDTVs. There isn't any CRT based HDTV that has 1080p. Some CRT computer monitors may be able to do 1080p, but then they're not widescreen.
toothpickbob 09-05-06, 11:35 PM oh, i know its supposed to be 1080i, but that would still be 1080 pixels vertically, right? I'm 90% positive that there are not that many pixels though. So I was wondering what the actual resolution is.
Also, anyone know anything about why they aren't lined up horizontally? I don't know if they are supposed to be or not, but its kind of bugging me.

No. You say you know it's supposed to be 1080i, but you really don't know what 1080i means. If there were 1080 pixels it would be 1080p. I'll say it again, 1080i only uses 540 lines, or 540 vertical pixels. One frame is line 1,3,5,7,9,....1077,1079, the next frame is line 2,4,6,8,....1078,1080. Each frame only uses 540 lines. At a single point in time there are only 540 vertical pixels being used, so that's all there is. Got it?

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating. I've bought now two refurbs from Philips Outlet. Both looked brand-new on arrival and have worked fine. The only problem I had was with the first set, back in January; I think the TV got stuck on the shipper's loading dock, because it did take too long for delivery. When it arrived, however, the TV was packed better than any other electronic item I've ever ordered, and it's been working perfectly for over eight months.
So, I know there are folks on this board who've had bad experiences with Philips products, but there are a lot of us who have had really good experiences. My conclusion from reading this board is that every brand has its bummer stories, including Sony.
I checked out the service manual and found my basic problem
One horizontal line and a black screen. Is there any way to reset everything via a service code? Tried going into SAM but it won't even load up.
Ghengis042 09-16-06, 09:48 AM Follow-up: The TV has been back at their warehouse for a few weeks now, and I still haven't seen a credit -- their FAQ says it can take up to 45 days or something like that. Well, I paid them, they shipped me a crap TV (on their dime), I sent it back (also on their dime), and they *should* (eventually) give me my money back. So I'm inconvenienced having to wait for it, but they're out twice what it costs to ship this monster. I think I'm "winning".
I ended up buying a used LG 30FZ4D (thread # 543416 on this forum; I can't post links yet apparently) off Craigslist. I've had it for a few days now and seems to be just great. I ended up paying 550, which is a bit more than the refurb Philips one, but the kicker is it had a 4-year BB extended warranty and it's only a little over a year old now, so I got almost 3 years of warranty... Similar features to the Philips set, and two HD component inputs (the "SD component" input seemed a bit ghetto). Plus, it's got a sweet piano-black finish that matches my PC case. :cool: In all, I think I did all right. Thoughts?
harpeth 09-18-06, 09:47 AM Sounds good, Ghengis. If I remember correctly, Philips and LG have (or had) a picture tube or LCD deal, so the sets should be somewhat similar. Someone who's more current on such things can probably provide more and better information than I have.
FGodiva 09-20-06, 04:56 PM Hi all. New to this thread. I got the 30PW0110D/37 from Wally this weekend for $500 or so. I have a few questions.
I noticed that the Philips Outlet has a /37B unit that list Progressive scan. My unit is not a /B just straight /37. Does that mean it is not Progressive scan? Would it be worth getting the /B if that is the only difference? Can still return my unit in the 90 day window thoughI did also get the extended warrenty.
Also, I have a D!rect TV HD DVR that can output all formats. Should I set it for just 480i and 1080i and let it convert things, or should I send all formats to the Philips and let it do it? I have played around with both and notice some artifacts during fast motion shots like NASCAR.
Thanks for the feedback. This has proven to be a great resource.
Thanks,
FGodiva
HD Entertainment 09-21-06, 06:42 PM I know this isn't the exact tv but I believe I have a better chance of this being answered here....after playing around with the service menu I mostly have the geometry problems at bay, except for certain cutscenes in ffx. So I was going to do some minor tweaking with it when I passed the "err" tab and seen that it read
13 00 00 00 00
00 00 00 00 00
What does this mean and is it bad?
Oh, my tv is the 26pw8402/37 thanks
sacarmic 09-23-06, 09:45 AM Has anyone found an a solution to the ghosting problem? I'm about ready to have a service call done. It really annoys me.

HD Entertainment 09-25-06, 06:58 PM ok easier question isn't "God Of War" in supported in 480p and/or 720p modes? Now if I'd feed it the 720p mode would the tv convert it into 1080i mode as this tv only supports 480p and 1080i? Just wondering, I can live with 480p just 720p looks better(or so I've heard) and want to get the xploder hd loader for ps2(hoping it works :cool: ) and am just courious. :D

1. I have my DVD hooked up with component cables and when running Avia setup the Tint control is not present however when I switch to my Dish input the Tint control comes back. Why can't I adjust my Tint through the DVD while the Avia test pattern is present?
2. When I run progressive scan the video goes into a bunch of diagonal slices. Doesn't this unit support progressive scan input?

Perhaps the input you're plugged into doesn't support tint adjustments? I don't think I've ever seen a component video input with tint adjustments.
And only 1 of the component ports on the TV supports progressive scan, you're probably not plugged into the correct one.
Joe19812 09-27-06, 02:20 PM I saw an earlier post that said to use AV4 for progressive scan input signal but I don't see an AV4 input according to this Philips picture. Joe,
You'll get the best image from the HDMI input, which appears to be the one in the lower left of the scan you posted. As far as progressive scan is concerned, you'll get that at 480p, but that image is grainy compared to what you see with the 1080i setting.
harpeth 09-27-06, 04:22 PM I noticed that the Philips Outlet has a /37B unit that list Progressive scan. My unit is not a /B just straight /37. Does that mean it is not Progressive scan? Would it be worth getting the /B if that is the only difference?
I don't know this for sure, but since all the sets on the Philips Outlet site have a "B" at the end of the model number, I've concluded that this simply means such a unit is a refurb. As far as I know, there's no difference between the refurb sets and new, in terms of features.
FGodiva 09-27-06, 05:20 PM John,
Thanks. Still dont think my unit is Progressive scan dispite what the Outlet website lists. BTW, from the DBS forum on the HR20 unit I have, I have set the HR20 to upconvert everything to 1080i and so far so good. It is what most folks are suggesting. I do seem to have a strnge pixelation issue though on my CBS channel off the dish. The HD shows have a red dot in the middle of the screen in faces on many shows, but only on CBS. I am guessing this has to be the D!rect feed and not the TV, but I do not have another source to compare. I think I may hook up the OTA directly to the TV and compare. I also think the blurring and blocking on fast motion scenes is also D!rects issue with there feeds from what I have read. Need to get my PBS HD locals here in SF so planning on hooking it up since the OTA tuner in the HR20 is not active yet. Dont want to have to box the big TV up and take it back, hope all my issues are from the feeds and not the TV.

You want to use the component inputs nearest the HDMI port. It supports 1080i and 480p, and presumebly 720p as well.
Are there any other picture options available from your source? Maybe you're doing 480p, but the wrong format, like PAL or RGB or the wrong component format?

I have neither cable nor satellite, so all I can refer to is my experience with OTA, which has been excellent. The only problems I've encountered have been pixelation and freezes, which are apparently weather related. Except for that occasional aberration, my reception is crystal clear. I haven't seen any red dots on any station.
As far as the question of progressive scan or no, I'd think that's purely a function of the DVD player. If your DVD player sends out a progressive signal, your HD TV should be able to display it without a problem, albeit at 480p.
Joe19812 09-28-06, 06:23 PM Thanks again for the info. My DVD only does 525p in progressive scan. If this is the case does it matter if I run progressive scan or not since the TV will bost the signal to 1080i regardless of what signal I send? or do I need to feed the TV 525p in order for it to generate the 1080i image?
I did get the OTA HD setup working, WOW what a picture!
STEVENMEJIA007 10-01-06, 10:08 AM Hello there, i owned a Phillips tv 30pw9100d (from Best Buy) since 4 months ago and i want to know if the quality of the cable connection has something to do with the picture quality?
my cable provider is comcast and i got the DVR box with HD support, the connection from tv to box is via (HDMI to HDMI) RCA brand around $50 from walmart.
the thing is that the channels on HD looks really amazing crystal clear but the "non HD" programming looks a little awful (even looks better on my old RCA tv), my answer is guys that if i get a more expensive HDMI connection (like from bettercables around $100) can the picture quality of "non HD" get better??
does anybody else has this problem??

HDMI cables are digital, so unless your picture is noticibly dropping parts of the image (entire blocks just disappearing), your signal quality for it is fine. What could possibly help is a better insulated RF-cable or a signal booster for the RF if you're getting a poor signal incoming, however your DVR box is converting the signal from analog to digital which likely adds some problems into the image, additionally HD displays are so much higher resolution so they display the artifacts inherent in an analog signal much more clearly.
So the possible solutions are:
1. Nothing, your signal may be fine and just you're seeing artifacts in the image that were always there but hidden by the low resolution of the TV.
2. Hook the cable directly up to the TV since the DVR box may be introducing additional artifacts.
3. Get better RF cabling or a powered signal booster to boost the quality of the signal coming into your home.
Also of note, you likely would have the same picture quality with a $5 HDMI cable as you do with the $50 HDMI cable or with a $100 HDMI cable.

Joe19812 10-02-06, 08:52 AM I just noticed a problem with a crawl display bar on my display this weekend watching a game. Is this the geometry problem that has been posted about previously? Joe,
Amen! OTA HD is awesome.
Regarding the 525p output of your DVD player, since the TV only displays 480p and 1080i you're going to get one or the other, though I'm not sure which. My LG player has settings for 480p, 720p, and 1080i, so I can choose which one the 30PW8420 will display. (720p gets upconverted to 1080i.) Your set should list on startup what resolution it's displaying. Mine will show "HDMI" on the left and "1080i" or "480p" on the right at startup.

Shortsord 10-03-06, 01:20 PM Hello, first timer and all.
The phillips outlet is having a killer deal on this set, and I had just a few quick questions.
Does anyone have experience with phillips refurbished? Are they mainly just cosmetically impaired?
What is the native resolution on this tv? I plan on watching dvds through my oppo and playing ps2 on it, that's all. Does native resolution still apply, as I called the phillips help line and no one could tell me the native resolution.
Overall, is it a decent tv for the price? I know I'm not trying to sped much so I don't expect all too much, but is it worth it for $450?
Thanks a lot all.

do the 720p signals lag with the sound(not in sync) at all while after converted?
Could someone please post the default geometry settings, it would be much appreciated.

Just a reminder to everyone, this set upconverts all signals to 1080i native resolution. It does not, at any time, produce 480p or any other progressive scan picture. Also, according to the service manual, it only accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i. It does not accept 525p.

The lack of 480p doesn't really matter though, as the TV is still capable of displaying at least 540 frames per refresh, so there shouldn't really be any loss in the conversion (maybe a small amount of flickering if the lines are in slightly different locations from frame to frame, but aren't the guide wires inside the TV supposed to prevent that)

I understand that, but I just did not want to disseminate information that was incorrect about the TV. Every time that I read an ad for the Samsung Slimfit and they say 720p, I cringe.

True, stating 720p as a display resolution when the actual res is 1080i is a heinous crime of misrepresentation.
FGodiva 10-05-06, 06:35 PM Just wanted to get back to the forum... I finally hooked up me OTA rig and picked up a great amount of stations here in the SF Bay Area from Sutro Tower. Got my PBS and the CBS feed. I do not see the red and or blue pixilation reported by me earlier, so I guess that is coming from the D!rectTV. Like others have posted I too have the exact same geometry issue with the ESPN ticker, but saw far it has not been that bad to move me to get into the service menu to fix it.
Could someone repost how to get into the service menu, please?
Thanks,

Here is what I have posted in the past of the this subject (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8044046&&#post8044046):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have posted this before, but it was a ways back and a lot of people have been asking about this recently.
Here is a direct quote from the service manual, Section 9.1: "The ATSC Tuner and 1fH to 2Fh conversion is performed on the ATSC module. Component inputs for the CVI HD and HDMI are located on the ATSC module. This input can accept 480i, 480p, 1080i, or 720p signals. The ATSC module converts whatever signal is applied to a 1080i format. The ATSC tuning system can tune all channels in the VHF, UHF, and Cable bands."
Section 9.3 of the service manual states:
Video Processing
The video processing section located on the Mono Carrier performs all of the 1fH processing. AV1, AV2, CVI, and Side inputs are fed to this board. The CVI input on this board will only accept 1fH signals. 1fH RGB signals from the Hercules are fed to the ATSC module via the deflection controller board. The ATSC module rescales the picture from the Hercules. It also has an HDMI and CVI connection. The HDMI and CVI connections can accept either 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i. The ATSC module also has a built in Digital Tuner. The ATSC module resizes the picture to 1080i regardless of the input.
There are no CRTs, that I know of, that actually have a native resolution that is progressive scan. I looked at a lot of CRTs when I was looking at buying the Phillips, and even though some stores advertise 720p display, they really only accept that resolution, they don't display it. If someone out there knows differently, please correct my ignorance.
JD,
Since my 30PW8420 has no internal digital tuner, it serves as a monitor for my LG digital tuner. The LG can send out 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals. As you state, 720p is upcoverted to 1080i. However, on my set the 480p signal is displayed at that resolution, or that's what the splash display says for a few seconds at startup of a DVD or on switching stations. I believe this is accurate, as I've tried the same source DVD at both 480p and 1080i settings, and the 480p image is noticeably coarser.
The Philips Outlet website confirms this, stating under "Features," "Progressive Scan for razor-sharp and flicker free images." It says the same thing for the 30PW9110. Click here to read the description. Thanks for the information John. So I see that you got a new TV....I have not been reading the board for a while since I have been focusing on my blog.
I guess where my confusion came in was where I continue to talk about the 9110, since that is what I have. I was not aware that CRTs could display progressive scan. Thanks for the learning lesson, I really appreciate it.
So with the last statement, anyone who reads this, if you have the 9110, read my posting, otherwise, listen to john...he is smarter :D
Hope all is well with you!
harpeth 10-06-06, 12:05 PM Not smarter, JD. I just accumulate way more information than most people need. :rolleyes:
So where you live, you are known as the King of Useless information? That would be me here. Movies, sprots, yadda yadda yadda. ;)
So is this Philips 30PW9110D any good for the people who owned it? Any problems with it? How would you rate it???
I'm thinking of buying it and just want to ask your advise if I should go with it?
It should also be pretty good with PS3 as well when it comes out right, since it has 720p and 1080i resolutions? :confused:
harpeth 10-09-06, 04:01 PM Read the full thread, Shurik, for an answer to your question. BTW, the 9110D and all other CRT widescreens, as far as I know, only displays 480p and 1080i. 720p is upconverted to 1080i.
STEVENMEJIA007 10-12-06, 04:53 PM Hey guys, got 3 questions for you:
msanmiguel1989 10-13-06, 05:18 PM This is a wakeup call for all who are looking to buy a new HDTV, be it Plasma, LCD, or Direct View… please, hear this:
I bought a Philips 30PW9110D, 30-inch HDTV from Wal-Mart in January, 2006. This was the result of one full year of deep research, looking for this features:
HDMI connectivity
Built-in ATSC and NTSC tuners
Widescreen -16:9
Capable of both 720P and 1080i resolution
Above all, I looked for the best picture quality. Weight and size were NOT a factor.
Well, the Philips did look great, but only when viewing DVD’s through my Samsung HD941 using the HDMI cable. Regular cable looked fuzzy, with colors washed out. It was worse that the TV it was meant to replace; my old 27-inch Sony Trinitron (10-years and going…).
Bought it on January… went down in July after an electrical storm, even though I had it hooked to a Monster Surge Protector.
That’s when my nightmare started…
I contacted Philips and they gave me the phone for one of their service centers. They in turn, said that they were backlogged on Philips TVs (hint??) and could not service my TV. Again I contacted Philips, which provided another alternate repair shop.
This second shop took my TV on a $35.00 deposit. Two days later, the repairman told me the TV is NOT serviceable; it would cost $850.00… but I paid $667.00 for it!!!
I just gave up and left the piece of junk with them to dispose of it.
At least, I got some great inside shop info that will help me in the future, and I want to pass it on to all of you: They also told me discretely that Philips HDTV’s are pilling up in the shop, as are a great deal of Plasma TVs, specially Polaroid, LG, and Proview. Most of these TVs failed before two years! Trust me; this is INSIDE INFORMATION.
So stick to the few reliable ones with dependable service: Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung, Sharp, Mitsubishi, and Dell.
Hope this works for you.
iamerror 10-15-06, 02:02 PM Hi all, new to the forums, decided to go ahead and try out this set since the Philips Outlet was having such a good deal.
It was an upgrade from my previous set, a 27" Samsung HDTV which I had been wanting to replace since A. It was 4:3 and B. It didn't support 720p at all. The included ATSC tuner was also a big plus for me :)
I set it up with a Silver Sensor indoor antenna, and I can pick up most OTA stations from Sutro Tower, which is almost 40 miles away.. not too bad for indoor! Everything looks great (DVD, XBOX, PS2, etc), I don't seem to notice any of the ghosting mentioned, although I do see a bit of the geometry issues, especially when there are ticker-type objects near the bottom of the screen.
I've been having trouble setting one thing up, my HTPC. I have a Radeon 9800 hooked up via a DVI -> HDMI cable, and the BIOS screen and Windows logo screen (while it's booting up) display fine, but once it actually gets INTO windows (the place where you click on the username to log in) I get a blank screen. This leads me to think it's a resolution issue... and I've been trying different ones, but I'd like to know some specific resolutions that other members have been having success with. TIA for any tips!
iamerror 10-15-06, 03:17 PM Looks like I solved my own problem! Sort of.
After pulling my hair out trying countless resolutions, refresh rates, etc, I decided to try out a spare computer I had lying around with a GeForce FX 5200, plugged it in, and voila! Instant 1280x720. Didn't even need to tweak anything.. and used NVidia's built-in support for overscan correction for a perfect picture! Kudos to their drivers :D
Hello,
I've purchased this tv (Philips 32pw8422) and can't find the service manual. I've found the only manual in a link CRTFreak posted time ago, but it's not working anymore. Does anyone have this service manual???
Thanks!!!!
I'd say a few things here....
The philips is pretty close to dirt cheap, and as a CRT gives quite good picture quality compared to the LCDs even at twice the price. That said, it may have a higher failure rate than is normal, but at the same time, it can't be all that high or there would be a mass consumer recall. The defect rate is probably less than even 1 in 100, and certainly less than 1 in 20, or we'd probably be hearing about lawsuits now. Anyway, you have a much better chance of the TV working than not working. Besides that, your TV did go through a power surge, and I'd say it's more the fault of the monster surge protector if your tv was damaged than the tv for not surviving a storm.
True, if you want top of the line quality, the philips probably isn't ideal for you. But if you want a bargain, I'd say it fits the bill.
Can't comment much on regular cable, but the OTA HD picture is great, as is the picture with video game systems over various inputs. DVD over HDMI I guess is ok, I don't really have a reference point other than to say it looks like a DVD alright. Could also be a crappy DVD player I suppose. I'm usually a stickler for details, but I can't notice any difference from the PS2's dvd playback over svideo, at least nothing that immediately sticks out. Video games under progressive scan and OTA HD are much more detailed.
HD Entertainment 11-12-06, 12:39 AM Ummm so I thought I'd go into the service menu and just do the testing things towards the bottom and check to see if there were any errors so I go to run a eeprom test the results came up as "FAILED AB84B39F" The tv seems fine though besides if I use a different picture setting off of my personal settings, ie multimedia, and go back after a certain amount of time, lets say 30 minutes, my personal settings are erased and replaced with the multimedia settings. So what my saving abiliy in the tv is messed up or is she(the tv) going to be dieing soon? Thanks all who give some feedback :)
maybe a dumb question, but there is any way to degauss this set like you can a computer monitor? i am getting some color distortion in one corner that if it were a pc monitor i would degauss it and it would go away
trevorv2 11-24-06, 11:15 PM I have a question: Does anyone know how to fix the halo/ghosting/ringing/double-image effect on this TV?
This is driving me crazy. I've been in the service mode, adjusted everything out to look as good as I can get, opened up the set and adjusted the focus, and still all hard edges have a ghost of themselves a few pixels to the right.
I can't return the TV because I got it from the Philips outlet and am out of warranty (the repair shop actually kept it forever and did nothing with it, long story, point being I'm screwed on a free fix). Has anyone EVER solved this problem, or did they just return their TVs? Is it something I could still return if I made a fuss about it being defective?
AFAIK, there is no easy fix for this. I was too lazy returning it, and since it is my wife watching it 90% of the time (and she isn't complaining), I'm just living with it... (it's our bedroom tv set..) I was playing with the idea of buying a dvd recorder that upconverts to 1080i/720p though, since hd signals seem a bit less messy, and I was hoping upconverting regular signals in the recorder would bypass the apparently horrible in-tv processing.
iamerror 12-01-06, 07:07 PM Had this set for about 6 weeks now, and up to this point I have only been using 480p/720p/1080i sources on the HD CVI.
Yesterday I decided to fire up my PS2 for the first time since I got the thing, and I have all of my stuff plugged into the HD CVI, going through a switchbox. Anybody familiar with the PS2 will know that most games are only 480i. I switched over to my PS2, turned it on, and I got an image that moves at about 1fps, looks horrible and is jerky as hell. It's like watching a series of still images, with a resolution of about 320x240. Just to eliminate the box as a possible source of trouble, I also tried directly plugging in multiple 480i sources one by one, such as a dvd player in 480i mode, GameCube, Xbox in 480i, etc. and all of them suffer from the same problem.
I double-checked the service manual and the posts here, and it says that the HD CVI will accept sources of 480i/480p/720p/1080i...
After talking with tech support they referred me to a local tech (luckily I'm still under warranty), and he said he needed to call up Philips to make sure that the HD CVI actually accepts a 480i source. He was pretty suspicious of my claim that the HD CVI should accept the signal, and maintained that he was fairly sure that it was a "misprint in the service manual" and that it will only accept non-SD signals.
I'm looking for some help here and asking if anybody can confirm for me that their HD CVI will take in a 480i source and display it correctly.
Help! :(
I have a ps2 and a gamecube hooked up that have both run in 480i and both run just fine, no problems at all, other than being pretty badly interlaced. Still, not any worse looking than a normal tv, and no framerate problems. However, using the various scaling modes on the tv (particularly panorama) does cause slowdown on the tv.
PS2 up to normal, Gamecube up to HD-CVI, and I've run it in both progressive and interlaced.
printer88 12-02-06, 05:12 PM I have an opportunity to buy the 30pw9110d. It is refurbished and the the plug where the cable goes in is bent and not useable. It is still under warranty and the seller is asking $300. Is it worth it and is the bent plug a big deal?
Thanks,
trevorv2:
I have that same ghosting problem everyone's talking about. I got mine a little over a month ago, and I'm really hoping Wal-Mart will take it back. I have tried and I just can't live with it.
I'm interested in what you said about focusing it. How did you go about doing this? And did it help at ALL? Or just not enough?
It seems less ghosty when it starts up, but after a minute or two, it's full-on. I'm trying to figure out what could POSSIBLY be causing this.
I've tried every input and every possible system menu setting. EVerything short of taking it apart. Even the OSD's have the ghosting, so it can't even be a signal thing. WTF?! This is the most annoying thing for a TV to have EVER.
I'm ready to go back to my 19" SD CRT if I can't solve this issue.
happinessiseasy 12-04-06, 10:50 PM So I was messing with the geometry settings and somehow the TV didn't like it and shut itself off. Now it comes on with a thin horizontal line and turns right back off again.
I called Philips. Wow. Philips customer service sucks more than I could've ever expected. I asked about the ghosting and the fact that it won't turn back on. The guy just kept asking me which channel it was on. I said it was on S-Video. He said what channel? I said it's not on the air, it's just set on the S-Video Input channel. He said I know but the TV has to be on a channel. Which one?
This went on forever. The only thing he could do was give me the number of a repair place in the area. I'm seriously considering returning it.
About the TV being off, he couldn't tell me if there's any way to reset it or anything. The repair manual mentions something about a jumper, but I don't know that I wanna mess with that.
Just recently purchased the 30PW9110D model for DVD viewing in a bedroom. Which seems to produce a better picture, the component video input or the HDMI input? Reason I'm asking, is the answer will determine which DVD player to purchase. Either one with good component video output or one with good HDMI implementation. Thanks all.
I have the tunerless version of this set, the 30PW8420. My LG tuner/DVD player can connect either way, but its software only allows upscaling thru HDMI. I can't really give you a comparison, but the image my setup produces thru HDMI at 1080i is outstanding. Since component is analog, I suspect the output will not be quite as crisp.
drinkliquor 12-06-06, 10:20 AM Bought a 9100d set about 1.5 - 2 years ago and everything worked fine since then. Then a few days ago I decided to play around with the service menu to fix any overscan, albeit slight.
I was in the vertical options of geometry and was basically screwing around with the numbers when the TV shut off. When I tried turning it back on, all I got was a blue screen, which then faded to black with a white horizontal line toward the top of the screen. When I shut it off and on again, the set would not turn on, but the LED indicator was flashing. One green flash followed by three shorter flashes. Which would just keep repeating.
I tried a hard reset, leaving it unplugged for four hours and then powering up. This did not work. I kept trying at longer intervals of time and still no luck. I'm thinking about leaving it unplugged for a week.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I don't want to take it to a tech because it's out of warranty, and I don't have a car to move the thing.
Also, if I want to sell the TV with this problem (I'm sure someone else would be able to fix it), would anyone buy it? It has worked fine since then and there's only a little nick on the left speaker (noticeable only if you're standing two feet away).
That's exactly what happened to me!!! It shows a line, and it shuts off again! And it happened when I was messing with the Vertical Geometry! I tried leaving it off for an hour, but it didn't help. The guy on the Philips customer service line couldn't even tell me how to reset it. I think you might have to get a service call on it.
I returned mine last night to Wal-Mart. It had too many problems for me. If this happened to another TV, then it's definitely not just a defect on one. If you can't return it, I'm sorry. I'm guessing a service call would get it fixed, though.
I'd hate to lose a few hundred dollars since I'm not able to return it and I fear that Philips will not service it or even answer my call.
So does anyone know of a way to reset the thing?
Metallicafan247 12-07-06, 02:01 AM yet another disgruntled ghosting set here. i know this is a tired issue, but can someone give me a definitive straight answer as to whether the ghosting problem can be fixing, or should i just take it back to walmart for my money back. i just bought it last week.
Joe19812 12-07-06, 10:00 AM I just noticed a problem with a crawl display bar on my display this weekend watching a game. Is this the geometry problem that has been posted about previously? The score board crawl seems ok on the right side of the screen but then it starts to bend down starting at the middle going towards the left. What is the fix for this?
I scheduled a service appt to get this corrected while it's still under parts & labor warrenty. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Joe,
That would be great. I would like to know so they may come fix mine too, although I am going on a year pretty soon with mine.
are you running OTA or through cable? Is the set doing the translation for HD, or do you have a cable box? I have been blessed not to have this problem, but if I am not using my cable box and letting the box decifer things, it is a small problem.
Besides this fix, is there anything else I should have them check? I could ask them to check that everything is properly calibrated but are there any keywords I should use to ensure that I get the best setup out of this unit when it's returned?
Maybe the overscan issue?
I am using a cable box, it's from dish network, it's not HD, and it's the crappier one I had to take and deal with because I didn't have enough credit when I moved to get the better package... That does make me wonder though, could it be possible to hook my cable right to my tv and have a better PQ? But, regardless, it still has the same ghosting issue when watching dvds in ProScan, just not as bad, possibly because of less artifacts and the use of my HDCVI input. I'd still really like to figure out a way to get a better PQ, I see the green tinted banding to the right of vertical lines in every viewing format, just at different extents.
From what I noticed, the TV is really bad in dealing with SD television. I am not sure where you are putting the inputs. If you have cable TV that provides a QAM signal, use your coax, set your TV to digital and run the channel scan. You should get most of the local HD channels that are not encrypted that your service provider...provides. Here in Houston, I know of people that pay $15 a month for cable, but have all their OTA HD channels and use their own PVR or computer to record HD programs. If your DVD is progressive scan, do plug it into the HDCVI as you are doing. That will help with the picture a great deal.
One thing about this TV is that it does much better when you input things that are already converted as opposed to letting it convert. I get some artifacting, but is is more due to the cable box and the bandwith than the tv. My Oppo DVD player puts out an AWESOME picture.
Hope that helps and that I answered your questions. If you have any more, do not hesitate to ask.
sickdrummer 12-26-06, 10:39 AM ok, this tv does in fact rock on HD format stuff. 1080i looks amazing on my xbox360. Now my problem. When i play gamecube it looks like total shite. I tried using component and even s-video cables. It looks very very bad, the game runs fine, just too blurry and not sharp at all. Anyone have a fix for this? I tried component on both the HD and SD inputs on the tv, still same problem. I read throught this whole thread and didnt see anyone with my problem. Anyone have a clue on how i could make SD stuff look better? maybe in the service manual which i cant find?
thanks in advance!
edit: OK i see found out about a toggle analog/digital option. is this to switch it over to older SD inputs to fix my old systems to look better?
Well, 2 solutions:
1. With the cube's component cables hooked up to the digital side, hold B on bootup to enable progressive scan. This is how I've generally played my cube games and it looks amazing, as sharp as a computer monitor.
2. I also hooked my cube's component cables to the analog component ports and it looks just as good on 30fps games but suffers on 60fps. It's to be expected though since an interlaced field is only half a frame and a refresh rate of 60hz is not fast enough to display 120 interlaced fields (not that the cube is even outputting that many).
thanks for the reply! I just read somewhere about holding B down to enable progressive. That should somewhat fix my cube problem. What about other analog systems? I have an old 3do and dreamcast and they suffer the same problem. I might just actually take this back for a LCD if i can. I read that this tv suffers from the internal digital tuner always on and makes analog look crappy. Anyone know of this?
thanks!
As far as I know, the TV has an analog and digital side, and the digital side blurs the crap out of anything below 480p.
For older systems, try using the analog ports on the back of the TV (not the side ports) and see how that works.
I believe way earlier in this thread there's a link, but I'd recommend against it. Several people posted about messing around with the settings and the set going dead, so I'm not sure if this set takes adjustments very well.
Unfortuneately that has always been its weak point.
harpeth 12-28-06, 06:59 PM Interesting that the digital-tunerless version, the 30PW8420, handles "old school gaming" well. My son and my son-in-law are playing an N64 Army Men game right now. It looks great, using the side ports of the 8420. Just my 2-cents worth.
Hey I own this PHILIPS model 9110d and want to ask you guys is you've fixed the overscanning problem on this set??? I realy need help with it? Any help?
I know this thread is old and 24 pages long, but hopefully someone will notice this and help! :|
I posted this pic in a couple Philips threads to show what I'm talking and how bad it is! It cuts off the image like by 1" on all the sides!
harpeth 01-12-07, 09:29 AM That looks like what I get with one of the settings on my separate digital tuner. In my case, I can make independent picture settings with the tuner controls. Several of them crop the picture, one of them doing it on all sides. Are you sure it's the TV and not an external receiver, like a cable box?
Yeahh I'm very sure it's the TV, cause I don't have any external cable box, and TV has already a built in Digital Tuner, so I don't have anything connected to it except regular digital antenna for D- channals and PS3 hooked up to it!!!
So does anyone here know how to get in the service menu and how to fix that??? :confused:
blambert 02-12-07, 12:57 PM Thanks ratman. The picture in the first link is an exaggerated example of what I see. It is mostly just upward scrolling horizontal bars on solid background colors. It only happens when my TV switches to 480p mode. I am using a DVD player with component video cables. I also see the effect when using my Nintendo Wii with component cables in 480p mode. When I had my OTA ATSC tuner hooked up to the same component input at 1080i, I did not see any hum bars at all.
I have the 8420, not the 9110, but I don't think they process the component 480p signal any different. I just wanted to know if anyone else has seen them, and what their solution was.
I have kind of come to accept it, and have been pushing to get a HDMI dvd player and upconvert all movies to 1080i. Its just a tough sale when your wife doesn't see the problem, and you already have enough DVD players.
Ohhhhh yess I see what you're having! I had the same problem when I was switching to 1080i with my component cable. The 720p and 420p were all clear though!
Well I fixed the problem by buying the HDMI cable, seems like HDMI cables doesn't let nasty ground reseptions to get through!!! Try pluging it though the HDMI cable and I'm pretty sure it should fix the problem!
Well I know that some of you who posted here have this unit! So did anyone have service manual or did anyone tried fixing an overscan on this unit??? Please let me know!
does anyone know if this model is HDCP Ready?
asnatlas 03-22-07, 10:06 PM I just picked up an OPPO DV-981HD and hooked it up to my Phillips 30pw9110d via the HDMI connection... I have only played around with it for about a day, but I have only been able to get my DVDs to playback in 480p, today when I turned on my TV and DVD player there was no video signal no matter what I did, when I powered off the OPPO and back on again, I hit the HDMI button and it came up in 720p but was not able to switch it from that... I just wanted to see if I am doing something wrong... The Phillips supports up to 1080i and would like to upscale to that… Any ideas...
SpecialSauce2020 03-30-07, 12:42 AM I've had this TV for just over a year and had had no problems with it...
And then, 16 days after my year warranty expired, I had the same problem that alot of people on this forum have had. The screen turned off as I was playing PS2 over HD-CVI and then it wouldn't turn back on - the little green light on the face of the TV would flash for a few seconds but thats it.
I am just wondering if any of you out there have had any success in getting this problem fixed or if its not even worth having it repaired. Thanks!
So you still have this problem, and can't turn the TV on?
Well my TV is not one year yet, it's about 1/2 a year and so far it's working ok, no proplems so far.
Sorry I can't help you out with this thing.
Dawg425 04-01-07, 07:39 PM I have the same problem with the green light flashing and not being able to keep tv on or it will flash while it stays on. I have tried to unplug it to have it re-set itself but no luck. I am also just out of the 1 year warranty.
Any Suggetions would be tried.
Thanks.
Hey what did you guys do to make it go blank??? What did you guys mess with when it happened? I heard some people fix this without a problme, and I'm thinking about fixing my overscan as well.
Well did you guys call Philips, what would they say about this???
SpecialSauce2020 04-03-07, 11:30 PM The only thing that I was doing when it went blank was playing PS2 through the HD-Component input - I have never made any changes in the services menu so I have no idea what could be wrong.
My TV is currently in the shop - I am trying to find my original receipt to fax in to Philips - they won't let my guy in the shop touch it until they give him authorization - but he went ahead and snuck a peak inside and said that the transistor was blown - that was all he could tell right now - hes going to put a new transistor in and then see if there are any other problems right now.
So far, Philips has been pretty difficult to deal with - they are not making any concession to the fact that my Tv is 16 days out of warranty - they say to even consider giving me such a concession, I have to fax in my original receipt - unfotunately I have moved in the past year and I may not be able to come up with it! So I guess we'll just have to see what happens next.
Anyone have any luck getting anything fixed out of warranty?
fyreboltx 04-09-07, 12:39 PM Would any of you recommend the Philips online store refurbs? Do those TV come in good shape or are they noticeably used?
I've been searching for a good and cheap HDTV and the 30PW9110D/37B looks like a nice choice. Does it have 720p? I can't seem to find that bit of info.
I have heard bad things about the refurbs in this thread. It accepts 720p, but native resolution is 1080i.
Same as all CRTs btw. Oh, and many LCD and plasmas don't natively do 720p anyway and have to scale it to their native res, at least since this is a CRT it doesn't have as nasty scaling problems as an LCD or plasma.
I may be the only guy on this board who can say this, but my experience with Philips Outlet has been great. I bought my refurbed 30PW8420/37B from PO in early January 2006. I realize that any set can go any time, but so far mine's been great. It was packed as well as anything I've ever bought, it looked brand new, and it performs like a champ. Philips gets a bad rap here, but I couldn't be more pleased with this set.
In March of last year I made a second PO purchase. I bought a refurbed 20" Maganavox combo TV/VCR/DVD. It too was well-packaged, looked like new, and works great.
As they say, your results may vary. Do your research and make an informed decision.
Do you have overscan issues/prolems? Does your Philips set overscan?
If it does, it's unnoticeable.
I second that... With a price of $269 shipped with the $80 coupon, I'd like everyone's opinion.
Avenge2007 05-04-07, 08:58 AM Yesterday, I ordered the 30PW9110D/37B from Phillips. The price came to $281 total, which seemed fantastic. This morning, I felt unsure about my decision, being that I didn't put in the requisite "due diligence" that should go along with any major purchase, even a relatively "cheap" one.
After reading this thread, and other related threads WRT to this TV, I called POS (Phillips Online Store - Pun may or may not be intended...) and cancelled the order.
I know many review threads contain a disproportionate number of negative experiences, but what I look for are patterns. If I read multiple occurrences of similar specific issues, as opposed to various general issues, I take heed.
I guess for me, even at this price, its just not worth the risk.
The main reason I am posting is that I just wanted to say "thanks!" to everyone who shared their experience, and to say hello. :)
pahamrick 05-08-07, 05:31 AM Hi All!
I browsed through this thread a lot, but I finally picked up the 30WP9110D last week. I grabbed it on sale, still new and sealed in the box and I thought it was a pretty good deal. But I've been reading a lot about ghosting and the examples given don't seem a lot like what I'm having trouble with.
I picked the TV up mostly for my Xbox360 and for watching DVDs. Now, I haven't completely calibrated the set yet, I'm still waiting on my Avia disc to get delivered, but the issue I have is something like this, and I'll give the easiest example I can to explain it.
When I bring up the Xbox360 guide blade, I'll get multiple 'ghosts' of the edge of the blade.
For example, } would be the edge of the blade, but I'll see something like } } } } } across the TV set, multiple ghost edges of the edge, but nothing like the slight ghosting people have mentioned along buttons or such. Its mostly noticably on very bright backgrounds, and I see it sometimes in some videos, but not nearly as bad. It probably is ghosting, but could the majority of that issue be fixed with proper calibration? Taking the TV back is not really an option, as the store I purchased it from only accept straight returns if the TV is still in the box in new condition (IE: Unused.)
I'm new to the whole HDTV thing, this being my first set. The picture quality is outstanding though, and I hardly notice it in games. Thanks in advance for any replies!
I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about, but it would help a lot if you can take a picture and post it here or something.
I'm just done calibrating this set, was fixing the overscan. I managed to fix it and now it's looking good :) Almost pretty perfect.
Well anyway post a picutre if you can, that would help a lot.
I have a PowerBook G4 that I'm trying to connect to my Phillips 30PW9110D. The TV displays something on the screen if I choose the 640x480 resolution. Any other resolution and the screen is blank.
I am trying to change the refresh rates but not sure what to change them to with SwitchRes or DisplayConfigX.
Please tell me what the refresh rates (horizontal, vertical, Pixel clock) are for the different resolutions that the 30PW9110D supports. I can't find this information anywhere on the web. I've been looking for a while.
Dover I'm kinda happy with this TV as well, but I gotta say this isn't one of the perfect sets that I've owned. This TV has lot's of visual problems; like overscan, ghosting image, some colors need to be adjusted as well :(
But overall this TV is great, the picture is very nice compare to some other CRTs.
kaynutz 06-01-07, 05:02 PM Hey guys, I've lurked this site for years getting information but never posted because there was never a need. But now I have a question:
I own a 30PW9110D/37B, bought it almost 2 years ago. The tv works fine but I am having problems getting the thing to turn on.
It all started about 2 months ago; I would turn the tv on and it would shut off after 30 seconds. I would then turn it on again and it would be fine. Lately though it has been turning off about 5-6 times before finally staying on, and I am afraid it is only going to get worse.
I have a progressive scan dvd player hooked up through the HD-CVI, a PS3 hooked up through the HDMI, and Cox Cable hooked up with coax straight from the wall. I don't have a cable box but I watch HD from Cox using the tv's built in QAM tuner.
Things I think might be affecting the tv turning on, although I have no idea if any of this is relevant:
1) The playstation makes the tv flicker every time it switches from the dashboard to a game or movie.
2) The tv used to be plugged into a power strip. The house I live in is old and the wiring is not grounded. I switched the power to a UPS to make sure the tv was getting a clean power source but that had no effect. Currently the tv is plugged straight into the wall socket.
3) The DVD player used to be hooked up with an S-Video cable. That was when the tv would only switch off once or twice. Recently I bought component cables (RCA) and thats around the time the tv starting getting really bad.
Whenever the tv switches off the green lipght power-on indicator next to the on button flashes. It will continue to flash until I can get the tv to stay on and I turn it off properly.
I called Philips and they were no help since the tv is out of warrantee. Philips suggested that I reset the tv (had no effect), make sure all of the cables were plugged in properly (they are), and plug it directly into the wall (again no effect). It doesn't matter if I use the remote to turn it on or if I push the on button on the tv.
Has anyone had this problem? Is there something seriously wrong with this tv, or is there a quick fix? I am willing to open the box up if there is just a loose connection somewhere. I am a poor college student so calling a tv repair man would be very last resort.
Thanks,
Kevin
Hey Kevin I haven't heard anyone with this exact problem that you described, but I've heard some people complain that their TV didn't work anymore after around a year. They said it just shot off, and they had that green light flashing giving out some sort of an error code. Some took the TV to the shop and the problem was that the fuses burned.
Well anyway I think that your TV is reading some sort of an error there when you turn it on. I don't know, maybe you can fix it by clearing this error (if it's an error) in the service menu.
If you want to give it a shot, press 062596 followed by the (info) botton in the analog mode. When you're there, there should be an error code in red. If you have the code, clear it, there's a clear option there. When you're done turn off the TV to save the setting. BTW don't go anywhere else while you're there unless you know what you're doing.
Well give it a shot, it might help.
Ohhh yeah Keven you're not as poor student as you described...you own a PS3 unlike some people say they can't afford it :D
Thanks for the tip. The error code was 11 0 0 0 0. I cleared it and turned off the tv but the problem still exists. If I go back to the service menu the same error code is there. Is there anywhere that lists what the error codes mean?
Kevin,
From page 11 of the service manual, "11/TDA6107/A Black current loop instability protection 7330, 3351, CRT B1"
PM me with your e-mail and I will forward you the copy that I have of the service manual. Sorry that I do not have a place to post it. It is about 13mb.
Keven is it the same manual as for 9110d? If yes I got it, you don't have to send it to me I can just look up.
Well I don't know what that code means, but from what you looked up "the black current loop instability protection..." sounds like a fuse, but I don't know. Is it possible to call up Philips and ask them what that really is???
adobe123 06-04-07, 11:12 PM I too decided to take advantage of the recent deal from the Philips Outlet Store for the 9110d. Well I've had it now for about 2 weeks and am already experiencing serious problems. The left 4" or so of the screen turned green and the right 6" or so turned red. In addition, horizontal lines pop up across the screen and while they are present, the parts of the picture between, above and below the lines are out of sync.
With the info provided in this forum, I am able to access the service menu and there is an error:
00160 L05UA1 1.1
ERR 5 34 33 00
OP 128 008 076 000 255 152 008
Does anyone here know why the colored bands and scan lines might happen? And for those with a service manual do you know what the error code means? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
you actually have 3 errors. 5 = +5v protection, 34 = I2C error while communicating with the ATSC deflection controller, 33 = I2C error while communicating with the ATSC PQ
tomuchtv 06-05-07, 03:36 PM Just added a hd/dvr box with a hdmi cable and WOW it looks clear, sharp and bright, so far its been working and looking good for 3 weeks, turned out to be a good deal ..
There are some weak points:
The sleep timer is not so easy, it should be on the remote as a "one step to activate"
The big problem:
The "Auto Volume Leveller" (AVL) does NOT lock ON , if I power on/off/on or cycle around the inputs or cycle the sound settings the AVL will turn OFF !
This AVL is a big problem I found and maybe someone can help me with this, I would like the "Auto Volume Leveller" to stay ON all the time
Thanks for your time !!
Thanks kaynutz. I was hoping I could make sense of the error(s) and from that make a guess at my chances of getting it fixed, but no such luck.
I called the authorized service center recommended by Philips and they are too busy to repair it right now and have no idea when they will have the time. They told me I should have never purchased this model factory renewed and I should get my money back; however given the price and features along with other people's experiences, I think I rather exchange it and play the odds. I couldn't be that unlucky twice could I? :)
Yeah sometimes these errors are hard to fix, and sometimes impossible! I would say return it, cause seems like it's another bad set that might cause problems later on even if you'll manage to fix it.
Apparently it's also found at the J.C.Penney outlets. They have it for $329. However last week a coupon for 25% was found in local for all merchandise in store and got it for $249. It replaces a somewhat new 27" TV bought a couple years ago. Like the A/D switch going between analog and digital comparing the image differences.
Also calibrated image with Avia DVD. I hope like others stated this set will be work for some time in the far future.
tomuchtv 06-08-07, 12:36 PM Down loaded the service manual, not to much info on the AVL. I know it seems like a small problem, but its the only one I have, only if the AVL would stay on all the time, this would make me very happy.. A HDTV that has a plasma like picture for $270 bucks . I'm happy..
Was in my local Walmart today and they had a clearance 30PW9110D in a box (may well have been opened). I checked the Philips website and by clicking on Widescreen TVs it brought up a page on the 26PW9100D/37. The 26 inch set would suit my needs much better but I have not been able to find much information on it.
Interestingly, the linked pdf leaflet has a very recent issue date of 2007-06-08 (Ver 7.0) . Is this set currently available? Thanks,
Red.
Yeah it should be available in some stores! I don't see it in WalMart anymore. Try Circuit City or Best Buy, they might.
As promised here is the rest of my story with my factory renewed 9110D that broke after two weeks.
After carefully researching the posted return policies, I was well armed to convince Philips that their general return policy applied to factory renewed products as well and was prepared for a fight; however the effort was not needed. The support rep quickly agreed to give me a return authorization with Philips paying the return shipping. Philips even went as far as calling the shipper and arranging a pickup.
The shipper picked up the TV yesterday so I went out and bought a replacement locally. Now that I have the replacement hooked up, I can see the original 9110D had problems since it arrive - the color never was quite right.
In the end I have no complaints with Philips. I am left with lingering doubts about their "renewing" process so would probably not buy another factory newed product.
I'm happy Philips took good care of you..
Its to bad you missed out on a HDTV for $269, you should of tried to have Philips send you a second HDTV, cause this deal is hard to beat..
MeowMeow 06-24-07, 11:36 PM Does anyone know what the specific chipset for the tuner in this TV is? I own one, and I am curious whether getting an STB tuner would help my reception or not.
tomuchtv 06-25-07, 01:31 PM I have a comcast DVR / HD box with a HDMI cable, the picture is the best I ever seen , almost plasma !!! The built-in tv tuner will pull HDTV off the cable without the box and it looks about 98% as good. The comcast "on demand" is the best with all HD movies, HD games and HD shows , the best five dollar a month upgrade I ever sprung fore , with gas $$ !! This is a good time to be a couch potato
i_am_mustang_man 07-12-07, 02:55 PM I just ordered one of these for 283$ shipped out of philips outlet. it was refurb, but i wanted the hdmi capabilities.
PenningtonNY10 07-13-07, 09:12 PM I am also very interested in this set as my first HDTV. The only reason interest spawned was because of the cheap price. I've read both good and bad so I guess it's kind of a crapshoot? What do you guys think? Good starter set? I just want something nice so I won't be stuck with my standard television for DVDs and my XBox 360 once I get one of those.
You are right about it being a 50/50 chance, but aren't all things that way with electronics?
Great first TV! Extraordinary picture! I have since upgraded to a 1080p, but use this TV for my daughter's playroom. Still the favorite TV of the house when watching SD TV and my daughters games.
PenningtonNY10 07-15-07, 01:19 AM Yeah. The way I figure it is that it's 100% better than what I have now and I'd greatly appreciate any upgrade in visuals. It lasts as long as it lasts...whatever...lol.
I have had mine for a year and an half and it is still going strong. Also bought the Wal-Mart 2 year plan in case something goes wrong after the phillips warranty ran out.
tomuchtv 07-15-07, 10:52 AM The picture is GREAT better than any panel @ 5 times the price
HDTV tube tvs are a 1000 times better than cheap lcd panels
You will have to spend big bucks to get a better picture !
PenningtonNY10 07-15-07, 11:43 AM Well...I'm feeling lucky. Haha...
Supposedly the coupon for the $80 off ends the 17th.
PenningtonNY10 07-16-07, 12:32 AM One last question. Do these ghosting and overscan and whatever other visual problems people are having happen on all things. For example, does it show up for some people on Cable, but not on DVD or a game console, or is this always a universal problem throughout whatever you run on the TV?
I only had ghosting when using the qam tuner. Overscan is an issue. There are a few here that find it a big problem when playing games. I noticed it switching from my LCD upstairs to the same show downstairs. Never noticed it until the comparison.
PenningtonNY10 07-16-07, 01:17 AM Thanks for the quick response. I was just curious about that. I don't see myself making the purchase within the next two days before the coupon expires so I'll probably end up waiting and if this deal turns up again I'll see if I'm ready to purchase. Thanks!
aurtini 07-23-07, 04:54 PM Hi All,
It was suggested that I repost my Philips question here, quoted below. Thanks!
Hey all,
I snagged one of these Philips CRTs (30pw9100d) from their official refurb program online about a year ago. I've been pretty happy with the set, even though it weighs a ton =)
Anyway, a few weeks ago, the thing dropped dead on me. It may have been when my apartment building lost power for a while during a storm, but I don't really remember since I was in super-deadline-crunch-mode at work. Now, having survived the deadline, I'd like to be able to use my set again...
I'm presented with a dark screen, and the power LED blinking error codes at me:
one long flash, followed by 3 short flashes, 34 short flashes and then 33 short flashes.
I haven't been able to turn up a service manual, so I have no idea what this means. Trying to power of the set, I hear the tube degauss, as if its turning on, but nothing happens.
I'm way past the 90 day manufacturer's warranty, and I hear dealing with Philips' customer service is a nightmare, not to mention other people having this set drop dead on them. So my question is this: is it worth trying to repair this thing or should I just cut my losses knowing that this thing is going to act up again if I do get it repaired? Time for a new TV?
Thanks!
Austin
samuraifez 07-28-07, 02:59 AM Hey guys, I'm new to AVS, but it seems like a great resource. I just bought one of these TV's from the Philips refurb store, and there's a slight problem. There seems to be a kind of shadowing behind everything on the screen, like each letter of text has a small reflection next to it. I've tried messing with all the basic picture settings, but so far I've had no luck. Does anybody know exactly what the problem is? Is it something that can be solved by the AVIA calibration DVD, or will it need repair? Thanks in advance for your replies. :D
You're seeing ghosting, which is a major problem with the digital tuner on that set. Is it worst with over the air TV signals?
To tell the truth, I haven't watched any TV on it at all. So far, I've only played my Xbox 360 in 1080i and my PS2 in 480p. I guess it's not a good sign that I'm seeing this ghosting, huh? :(
Picture not as good as my off-brand LCD (olevia), but still better than SD.
My cousin is happy with his purchase, and that's all that matters. $270 shipped helps.
maw2828 07-29-07, 06:52 PM Got the TV and set it up. Worked fine on Saturday for a few hours. Then Sunday morning it died. Same problem as aurtini. Flashing lights, won't power up. Don't buy the refurb....
samuraifez 07-30-07, 12:39 AM I have a twinge of buyer's remorse after having this set for about a week, but I would be content to just get rid of this "ghosting" problem. Anyone have a solution?
Only way I solved the problem, don't use the internal QAM tuner. Get a cable box. I have no problems using a cable box. Not had any issues with DVD playback (had an Oppo hooked up to it and it was beautiful).
So this usually doesn't happen if you're not watching TV? Like I said, I haven't watched any TV at all, and I really don't have any interested in doing so. I just want to play Xbox 360 in peace! :p Do you think the problem (ghosting) could be repairable by a professional?
Not sure how to fix that since this unit's history of ghosting usually stems from the QAM tuner. :(
Ah, I see. Thanks anyway. There must be an answer somewhere!
tomuchtv 08-07-07, 08:33 PM I have one of these sets and their great to watch, there only as good as the input, crap in crap out . I have a comcast hd box and using a hdmi cable ... the picture is the best !! Also runing a samsung 1080i dvd , There is not a better looking system for the money , you could spend many times more and not be as good.. Stay away from those cheap ($300 to $600 )LCD tvs that they are unloading these days . They are slow , dim and the colors are all wrong !!!
harpeth 08-08-07, 02:32 PM That confirms what JD and others have said, i.e., a separate settop box is essential for best reception and picture. Whether it's cable or OTA, the separate receiver delivers an outstanding image on these Philips sets.
Thanks, John. Hope all is well in TN! :D
oryan_dunn 09-23-07, 11:02 AM I've uploaded the manuals for several sets to megaupload. I didn't get around to starting my own server.
