what format do you need??

I might be able to do some work with the jpg you provided actually. If you have a higher res one that would be better. However, I haven't commited to it yet. You didn't answer my questions in post 486 for starters...

Ok, I rendered my animation -- and the .avi it created looks great! Thanks Reaper... Hey all,

The final .avi that was created was about 650 megs, and it looks great when I play it back. Now, whenever i have an .avi that i want to burn to a DVD, i use DVDSANTA to convert the .avi to the proper Video_TS, .vob, etc files.

Then I use TMPGenc DVD Author to author and burn. (what's that tmpgenc program that will accept, convert .avi? Because i know tmpgenc dvd author won't allow you to import .avi files to work with)

However, when i convert the .avi using DVDSANTA, the .vob file is only 16 megs. That seems like an awful lot of lost data/quality coming from 650 megs. It plays fine, but seems like a less quality. I have DVDSANTA at the highest res. too. What's a good program to use to convert this to DVD material, while keeping a nice resolution and picture quality?

Oh yea, also, during the .avi, there is a square on one of the spotlights that flickers, would a re-render fix this? Could thi sbe from doing other stuff on the computer while it's rendering? Not a HUGE deal, but if a re-render will fix it -- I'll do it.

Reaper, by 'animated logo' I was referring to creating something completely different to what I rendered. I wanted to have my theater name come up on screen both words, one before the other with a sort of metallic clanging sound when each words 'hits' the screen. Thats why I asked if blender could be used to do it since in this format the words would be dynamic instead of static 'fox' theme we are using now.

Sure... it could be done in blender. You could have shiny words fall onto the screen with a metallic clanking sound. You can basically do almost whatever you imagine given enough time and energy. It's a full 3d reneering package. That might be a neat idea for a logo as well... just have the words fall into place...

I have used Ulead Cool 3d Production suite to do some simple animations modifying some of the free samples you can download - I picked it up quite quickly - you can get a trial version. I knocked up a quick interpretation of what Ion-man suggested in about 10mins where the theatre name drops from the sky and bounces once. I have a quicktime file as an example of what is capable - but am not sure how to post it.

I made some great progress modeling a theater and then tried to explode it. The result was not as exciting as I had hoped. So, I've slowed down on it a bit. I am considering some other logo ideas but also keeping that one in mind.

Reaper did a custom intro for me adding my name to it. Its mint.
I added it to my play list on my server and use the MYHD card for playback so it plays like a trailer then goes right into my movie. When I have friends over for a viewing I dont tell them about the intro. When the curtains go it and its showtime its the first thing everyone sees and it quickly becomes the topic of conversation for the next twenty minutes. I love it.

I've already created a regular (non-squeezed) 1280x720 version to use before I watch 1.85/1.78 movies. ie-for when I'm not using the anamorphic lens.
(of course, I need to compress it as my HTPC can't seem to play the 1.7gig AVI smoothly! :)

Well, I believe it is safe to say that the glitch is *not* in the source file as I have not noticed it nor have many other forum members who have used the same source. So, it sounds like it must be on your end. In wich case, re-rendering may fix it.

I am working on a whole intro DVD. Puting in some of the trivia slides and such. Right now my house is being build so I have plenty of time to work on this. I hope to have a nice demo loop setup on my HTPC once I get this all done. That way when I have people over I can just run this as a loop.

I'm also curious about how to make an anamorphic version of this animation... I'll hopefully have some time to research it later (translation: search google), but if any of you folks reading this has already figured it out, please let us know the secret... thanks!

OK COOL . I had an idea of placing that logo on top of a building to make it look like a theater. As you may have noticed I got my logo from the movie "The Majestic" I like the neon light look to it.. just an idea that I can't render...lol

I have found that if i add a slow fade in the begining and end of the animation that it perfectly fits with the DTS egypt intro..... anyone else tried this? Anyone else found a 21 second intro sound that fits perfecty without altering (which, i have tried as well). Is all of your guys' animations 21 seconds long as well?

Looks great! But for some reason in windows media player it is upside down. Had sameproblem with ffdshow but there was a setting to fix that. Anyone have this problem or fix?

Mine is 21 seconds long and 16x9. However, I have a 2.35 screen and am using an anamorphic lens, so when I play the intro it is stretched horizontally. (of course, if I move the anamorphic lens out of the way it projects fine).

Also, are you using memories on TV to add a slow fade to the beginning and end?

Hello. I have Adobe Premier -- however, i was using memories on TV because the interface is sooo simple and powerful. yea, i added a slow fade -- however, it's not translating to the final output file... Not sure why.... However, after the animation ends, it cuts right to a fade in of an "Enjoy The Show" screen -- so it give the effect of fading that satasfies me for the time being... Oh yea, after the enjoy the show screen -- i have about ten seconds of black frames -- this way it won't return to the menu before i can stop it, or switch inputs to the main DVD player with the movie ready!

I ran it on my 65" tv today -- it looks aaaaawesome! I will post pics soon. Actually, since i used memories on tv, i added a couple other albums to the dvd that have a nice function, one fluffs my sub, the other has solid screens of color, etc.... almost like a quick and dirty diagnostics disc.

Using the tips in this thread I installed blender, edited the template for my own theater name, and then rendered... It *only* took overnight on a 3.4Ghz P4 :) first time I've ever seen the CPU temperature get up to 60C. Guess it is very busy.

I tried using the fanfare .mp3 directly in WindowsMovieMaker and it crashed every time I tried adding the mp3. It worked with the converted .wav file, but the resulting movie was very highly compressed. I made a second mpg using Nero to combine the .avi and .wav and it looks better. I'm going to try downloading the tools you used and see if it looks even better.

There is a steep learning curve to blender, but I finally figured out how to edit the text. (I used the on-line help a lot)

Great job... I love the additional slides... It makes your home-theater really special.

Any chance you would share the .blend file(s) for the sections you added?
I'm sure I can edit the original, but it would save an hour or so.

Was each "scene" rendered separately and then combined when you made the final .avi?

Fantastic post, I saw a webpage the other day that had "custom" HT intros that cost like $300 for a cool little intro that they would place any name into but $300 seemed crazy, it was basically like this where once they had made the original file all they would have to do was retype a name and make some adjustments. That product made me wish I knew of a freeware or opensource 3d animation program but I didn't get a chance to look before I saw this post. So now I downloaded Blender, and the fox thing and I am making an intro for a hometheatre that I don't even have. LOL. Blender seems prety frickin cool and with my AutoCAD experience it is not taking that long to learn the basics. Maybe by the time I can afford a dedicated theatre in a house that I don't even have yet I'll be able to make a totally custom intro, and I owe it to you and this post.

Sorry guys for any delays... my life has been a bit crazy lately. Today for example, I arrived at work to find a crashed computer. Then, I got a call from my wife wondering why there was no hot water. Answer: The hot water heater broke and poured water all over the floor... of the basement... which is where I am building my theater. Then we went to the doc for an ultrasound. Turns out... we're having a baby girl! Yaaaa! Then I came back to work and found the lunch I had packed was rotten. Finally, I came home, paid for a new water heater and wet/dry vac and started cleaning up the mess. *Deep breath*.

I also have a theater model I am working on for a forum member. I get paid to do those, so this volunteer effort takes a back seat. I still want to help people out with it, but it's a notch down on the priority queue... Anyways... just a day in the life of...

Wow. I found Blender last fall and searched and searched for a intro type project. I was surprised no one had done one. Or maybe I just couldn't find it. So, I installed Blender and started to learn it, I found this great tutorial on how to create the Universal orbiting world logo (http://kahuna.clayton.edu/~jbrooks/blender/tutorials/universal/). I managed to make that with sound and all, but didn't get much farther. I'm more of a technical guy than artistic, so creating something from scratch is difficult. But following a tutorial or modifing something is easier. I'm so glad I just ran across this. I'm going to try it on my own since you have your hands full (congrats, btw!).

I have the original blender file and a modified one. But, a couple of pages back someone said they had a 5.1 sound file, but I couldn't find it on his site. Does anyone have a link? I guess I can get it off a dvd if I have to, but why reinvent the wheel if you don't have?

You're confused. You only need to download a 2MB file. It takes a long time to render the stuff on your local machine. It has nothing to do with your net connection after you download the 2MB file. I think you will be fine.

Thanks Reaper. It looks great. Only problem I had was that I forgot to convert the mp3 to a wav. Only took me 45 minutes of cursing lol. Also thanks to the post here on how to convert it to TS file. With that I was able to use dvd shrink to add it in front of any movie I want now.

Also I like the title of the movie that is showing..lol maybe change the color of the lettering or put a glow behind the works to bring it out.. Now the big question is will it rotate like your other models with spotlights etc??? This could be a whole new approach for you to do customs with...ALSO LIKE THE POSTERS....I OPENED IT IN PSP AND RAN A FILTER ON IT TO BRIGHTEN IT UP..MUCH MORE DETAIL THAN AT FIRST GLANCE

Thanks Reaper for all the great info you have provided! It sure brings back memories of the good old days of using 3D Studio (pre 3ds Max). Once you get used to changing, moving and resizing text, it's really easy to make it say whatever you want. I can't wait to try creating some new models.

I haven't looked on the Blender site to see if there's a tutorial for this or not. I just followed reaper's directions from page 2 of this thread:

If you select the text on the middle or lower levels and then hit tab; you can re-type the text. You can hit g to move it around or s to scale it after you re-type it. While the text is being moved or scaled, you can hit x, y, or z to lock the scaling or movement to an axis.

You can probably just delete the text on top, copy the text in the middle and move it vertically. To copy text, select the middle text with a right click, hit shift-d and then hit z to confine it's movements vertically.

A little tip for those who are rendering your own... if you are rendering to an AVI file, if blender.exe (or your computer) crashes, or you lose power, etc., you'll probably need to start all over. (Obviously a UPS can minimize the effect of short power outages). This, of course, really, really sucks.

So what to do? Well, if you output the frames that you're rendering to individual files ("Targa" works fine for me), then if the rendering process is stopped for any reason, you can look at the targa files to see how far along it got, and then restart the rendering from the frame number that it stopped on.

Once you've rendered all of the frames (650 in this specific one we're all interested in), you can load them into the "Video Sequence Editor" in blender, and then generate your AVI file in just a few minutes from there. (You can generate the AVI from the Video Sequence Editor images that you loaded by selecting that "Do Sequence" button that's under the "ANIM" button and above the "Render Daemon" button). Oh yeah, to select all of the rendered TARGA files, you just change to the directory where you rendered them to, and then press CTRL + A to select all - make sure ahead of time that there are no other files in the directory so that you only get the image files).

Would that be an NTSC-DVD or a PAL-DVD?

When rendering the file in Blender, you can choose NTSC, NTSC wide, PAL and PAL wide (if memory serves me correctly... :) ). Those are the correct settings for a NTSC or PAL render if you plan to make a DVD out of it.

A small downside to this is that the animation window / camera view is changed, so the animation has changed a bit.

On the other hand, you could also make a HD version using Blender, and let the DVD creation software figure out the correct format. The DVD creation software will let you choose the output format (NTSC or PAL) and sample it down, but working from a HD source does get you a sharper image on your DVD (from my own experience). Obviously, rendering time in blender is increased "somewhat".. :)

Whats the average render time? Am I doing the HiDef version as just selected animate from the menus. Im on frame 107 after 7 hours.

I would like to se these things up for NTSC DVD the best I can. So far, I have been setting everyone's animation by clicking the NTSC button. Most seem to be very happy with the results on DVD. I do not see an NTSC-Wide button. Is NTSC good for DVD or is there something better?

You probably are rendering at 1280 x 720. Under format You need tomake sure AVI RAW is selected and size x and y are 720 x 480 respectively....Unless you want HD, then you click on "Full" under format which will give you 1280 x 1024.

I rendered at 720 x 480 and burned it to dvd. It fills up my 16x9 screen.

I wanted it at 1280x720 for my Z3 (native resolution)so hopefully its right :) too late for me to check now but the renders look like they are right. now on render #321 :)

This tutorial (http://kahuna.clayton.edu/~jbrooks/blender/tutorials/universal/) I linked to earlier will help you figure it out. I think it is pretty much beginner level and covers everything needed to do this project. It was written for an older version, but it isn't too hard to figure out where things have moved to.

OK, my mermory is fading... aparently.
I checked blender, there is no NTSC Wide button, only a PAL 16:9 button. This sets up Blender for PAL widescreen output. Not what you want, and there doesn't seem to be a NTSC 16:9 button... I could have sworn...

However, you say you'd like the DVD to look the best possible way. In that case i'd recommend rendering your Blender-logo in 1280 x 720 format. The AVI file Blender generates can be fed into most DVD creation software (like Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere or even Pinaccle Studio). Here you configure for which TV-system the DVD should be created, NTSC or PAL. In the process of creating the DVD the software will crop the video, but since the source (your Blender AVI file) is a higher resolution the DVD should look a little better, smoother.

Hope this helps, sorry for posting the wrong info.

I wanted to share my results from my Reaper-induced blender explorations with the people in this forum because I figure that those of you with some time and interest in tinkering with a cool computer program may appreciate the possibilitys.
I started playing with blender after reading about it here, and within about a week I had created an animation for a friend based on the THX "Broadway" intro. I think it's pretty cool, it all fades in and out like the original thing and the light wipes across the logo as the sound builds just like the THX intro, I even used a tagline at the beginning like "the audience is listening" but I used "The audience is Chillin'". My friend planing on using it when he gets his setup done in his new house. I suppose I could send the blend file to someone if they wanted to host it, it takes more work to personalize than the FOX one because the initials have to be changed from text to surfaces and then shaped to fit the style of the THX shape, it also doesn't work for some initials as well as others. Here is a pic of a frame from the anim, this is right as the sound is starting.

My theater "Fly-through". The screen would show like "Our feature presentation" and then the image would pull back so you see the screen and the walls, then it sweeps back to the remote on the table and goes into the play button. The camera flys through the remote and out to the electronics in a rack where it goes inside to show a little movie projector (film) spinning away and showing the traditional film reel countdown which melts away to show the personalized logo. Ideally this whole thing is theater specific. I want to make it so that it would be flying through my theater (well in my case a theater I don't even have, but if I did...) and showing my logo. I just think it would be like the filmstrip rollercoaster that plays at one of the megaplexes. My last hurdle (other than MASTERING blender) is finding software I can use to encode 5.1, I have multi-track audio software and loads of sound-fx disks (I work in live theater and do sound design)

I think that could be pretty cool but It'll take awhile.

You could probably do them for the folks whose theaters you rendered for an extra fee. You would just have to add some electronics interiors and create a path for the camera, the interiors of the electronics could even be the same.

Right now the whole thing would look pretty weak flying through my living room and showing on my great big 27" television.

-=Tutorial to get the AC3 file out of the Fox-teaser=-

What you will need:

1. DVD with the fox-teaser (for example "X-MEN")
2. DVD-Decrypter (freeware)
3. a software DVD player (PowerDVD, WinDVD, ...)

> First Step
You must first figure out what VOB File on the source DVD is the fox teaser.
To do so simply drag&drop single VOB files to your software dvd player until you found it. It must be about 20 Megabyte. If you found it, remember the filename. For our example: VTS02_1.vob

> Second Step
Install / start DVD Decrypter and switch into "file mode" by pressing the "F" key and move to the dvd drive where the DVD with the fox teaser is already inserted. Don't forget to choose a destination directory for the final AC3 file. Now find the file with the teaser in the filelist (our example: VTS02_1.vob) and highlight it with the left mouse button. Then click right mouse button on the highlighted file and select option "STREAM PROCESSING". After a short analysis you should see the video and audio streams in this file. Now only(!) select the AC3 stream = deselect all other streams (video streams). Important is that you not only select the AC3 stream with the checkmark, you must highlight(!) it too with left mouse button!

Then select the "DEMUX" option at the buttom and hit "OK".

Now you should have the single AC3 file in your destination directory.

I have used DVD-Lab (30 days trial) and have no volume problems.

Just to let you all know after lots of problems getting sony vegas to accept the ac3 file (it wouldnt accept it) in the end i used drdivx to make a divx file and then used AVI-Mux_GUI-1.17 tool to join the ac3 audio - no audio problems :)

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the same animated intro template called "fanfare movie project".

This is my first post so i cant post a linke, but do a google search and paste the following in the search

This template is for Ulead Cool 3D Production Studio, and is much easier to use than Blender, and much faster rendering time.

I downloaded the demo version of Cool 3D Production Studio from Uleads site, and had my video (Xvid avi) about 20 minutes later. You must use the "3D Production Studio" version, not the "Cool 3D" version.

i have just had reapers e-mail,it took 19 hrs to animate on a 1.6 acer laptop with 512 mb ram and x600 graphics . opened it in moviemaker and saved as a 6mb avi,looks great. Just need to add music

For those that haven't rendered yet, one thing that I forgot to do until I was about half way through ... shut off any virus scanning & spyware software (and probably any other apps that you may have open) and internet connection. That significantly sped up the rendering on my machine. It went from about 2.5 minutes per frame to a tad over 1.5.

ok so if you guys want true wide screen set the x aspec to 117 and the y aspec to 100, then render it at 720x480 and tell the mpeg encoder it a 16:9 video, other wise it renders at a 1.5:1 aspect ratio

When I play the DVD of my intro it plays in 16:9 although I rendered it 720x480.

I rendered mine 1280x720 hidef for my hd ready sanyo z3. took ages but worth it. the resulting file was huge and over a gig so i used drdivx with divx5 and got it down to under 20mb (still 1280x720) with ac3 dolby digital sound as well :)

only thing is microsoft windows media player 10 wont play it which is annoying but vlc will. any way of fixing this issue and letting WMP10 play it?

one mor3e question i'd like to join the rendered divx avi file to the start of avi files on my hard drive but the joiner software ive found only lets you join avis of exactly the same spec. Has anyone found some software which will join any avis together regardless of spec or will fix spec and then join?

If you are using a frontend of some sort for your pc it may have the option of automatically creating a playlist when you start a movie, you could have it always use the intro in that playlist. I know that on my test system I am using both MyHTPC and Xlobby (not at the same time) and have had success on both getting them to play trailers and intros before each movie. I don't know about software specifically for joining video files so I didn't really answer your question but I think that HT frontends are pretty darn cool so I would recommend trying one out.

well apparently , after a days worth of reading this thread and trying to get this to work , I have found that I am indeed retarded.I have the raw .avi .....obviously it stutters when I play it....and I have the .ac3 file....but getting VirtualDub Mod to put these together is playing heck on my good naturedness.VirtualDubMod doesn't show all the codecs installed on my computer for decompression...could this be my problem?


duh...thats what I get for trying to do stuff all at once instead of walking away for a bit....my defiler pak of codecs doesnt include creation...so I downloaded an xvid codec and evrything is great.thanks!

on my 5th hour of rendering 915 frames so far..is this good??? how many frames are there total???

Hmmm... sounds like a problem to me. I thought there were 650 frames total. it's been a while since I rendered a video and I don't happen to have my laptop with me to confirm. Anyone else able to answer sooner? Also, 5 hours to render 915 frames sounds way low. Something odd going on there. I will have to check the model I sent you sometime soon to see if I notice any oddities within it. Is it set to 720x480? Is the render set to 100% size? Is the output avi raw? Can you see the frames being generated on your screen? Do they look correct? Can you see the results file in c:/tmp? How big is it?

I checked the model I sent. It looks OK. The only oddity is that the file in tmp might be called Cook or something like that. But the size and number of frames looks typical of what I always send out.

REAPER I got it done...took over 10 hours..my machine aint no dog either and I have 1gb ram to boot...yikes...now I know why you went to the stills ...time is a commodity..thanks again

Allright, glad you got it working. Hey, if you ever want that logo I made for you by itself...a still image, I can probably render a high res version of it. Just all the additional work that came up later ... putting it on a theater, animating it, etc... that may never happen.

I received Reaper's files on email (two of them). This is what I have done so far.
The first one I render was an AVI file. I did not change file extension.
It will not play in XP Movie Maker. I have not try to put audio to it yet.
The second file I changed the file extension to JPEG so I can put it in XP movie maker and put sound to it in there. I'll let you know how I make out.

Reaper, thanks again for all your hard work.

Perhaps it will not play on your PC solely because the resultant avi is so large. You can try producing a compressed avi just to check the quality of the video with virtualDub.

Reaper the file plays fine on my pc, nice video. But I was trying to put it into XP movie maker, but movie maker won't recognize the file extension (blender) avi.

Ok guys I must be missing something here. I render the file. finished with 650 frames. no where to save this file. I had Reapers file in MY DOCUMENTS but it reads as a blend.blender file not an AVi file. how do I get it to an AVI file. when i hit the play button in blender it plays great. But i can't get it into the virtualdub or movie maker?

need a little help. After i render the file it is coming out as a blend.file extension, not an AVI file. When I play it in Blender it shows as an AVI file. I can't get it into any other program because Blend.file is not recognized.

Did you check in your c:\tmp or c:\render dir for an avi file? You do not need to click file->save to attempt to save the file it rendered. It automatically dumps it into a dir. That dir location is defined in the buttons window on the left side of the screen. It should say something similar to the dirs I suggested you check. Look there for the results. They may already be sitting on your PC.

Hi Reaper After I sent the help out, i did a search on my computer and found the file. Thanks. I put it into XP movie maker and added the music, it also worked very well. I burnt it to a DVD and that is now playing on my TV very well.

Thanks in again for all your effort and for introducing us to this wonderful software. I have downloaded a copy and playing with it as we speak.

I downloaded the Generic fox file and was trying to render the file in blender. It took only a minute of so to run but when i ran the same file in animation mode it ran for about 20hrs; producing an avi file that i had an error opening with virtualdub....no video file attached...was the error.

My question is what is the difference between rendering and animating in blender. How do you go about rendering a blender file like the sample fox file that i downloaded. I downloaded the file from Powers website.

Per Reaper's instructions, you just open the file in blender and hit render or f12. I did that and it only ran for a couple of minutes. I must have done something wrong.

Hitting render or F12 simply renders a single frame of the animation. Hitting Alt-A in the 3d window shows you a preview of the animation with no special effects that come from rendering the actual animation. Hitting the large ANIM button should render all 650 frames and produce a raw avi file.

Thank you for that answer. I must be getting an error with my 'completed' avi file because my animation process did not run to completion...my 'puter locked up overnight and i had to reboot. I will find out for sure when i get home tonight with my second run started last night.

How do you know when the animation process completes, do you get a prompt or something!

You will know it is done because you will not see any frames being rendered and your user interface will become usable again...

Above is your quote on how to edit the original fox.blend file. When i opened the file in blender, it gave me three windows. Questions:

1. From which window should i start my editing of the text file that will impact the rest of the windows or am i opening the file incorrectly? I am using the lastest version of blender.

2. How do you scale and move the text file to positon? I tried scaling and it did not work for me or the text did not fit into the space in the middle or at the bottom.

3. If i am not asking too much could please provide some more detailed instructions on how to go about editing the original file in blender?
