Quick question. The stillframe images Reaper posted are 1280x720, but when I open the .blend file, the dimensions show as 720x480. Do I need to change these prior to ANIM if I want a 16x9 final product?

reaper
10-20-05, 11:16 AM
I set up every model for a 1280x720 still image. When sending the model out, I click the NTSC button and set the media save type to AVI raw. Most people prefer to animate the raw animation at 720x480. When burning the movie to a DVD, I believe the software might stretch it to 16x9 if you select that option. However, some people have changed it to other resolutions for the purpose of still renders or movies.

Some have changed it back to 1280x720. You can easily do this by hitting the "full" button on the right. then change 1024 to 720.

When you produce the DVD in this manner, I believe the DVD burning software will shrink the image but not stretch it at all. The downside is, your render will take a long time to produce.

You can also double the 1280x720 resolution to get a high res still for printing...

What DVD burning software stretches source to 16x9?
I'm only familiar with DVDShrink and DVDDecrypt, and I don't recall either those programs having that ability.

As usual, I lurk for a bit, read up as much as I can (if only the majority would do that).

I stumpled upon this thread, as I though it might've lead me to new links for the DD and/or DTS sgnage.
Alas, it was not to be.

However....

I must say, after grabbing the original Fox template, and with some time (and a lot of errors) I am now in rendering mode. Even at a miserly 12 FPS, it's gonna take a while. I did manage to edit the top line properly. As my nic is daTerminehtor, I used terminatortwo font.

daTerminehtor
Productions
Limited

I orignially made one in Ulead Cool 3d Studio (not cool 360). However, it was a straight on one side to the next animation (unlike this, which is truer to the original).

I'll post a screen when done (in the hopes reaper can critque it.

This thread alone make reg'ing worthwhile. :|

My next 'trick' will be to learn to change the colours and textures of the text/objects (didn't want to push it first off). Perhaps importing an image to start with...

Again... reaper, thanks a bunch for your efforts.

Yup. :P

This means, of course, I 'made' those 650 .tga unnecessarily.

At the same time, if I keep them, I can go back later and edit a series of say, 30 or so, adding something in here or there. Say, a badger.

Now adding frames.

Again, thanks a bunch.

I'm having a problem with mine. I have it rendered and merged to the AVI then converted it to DVD with "AVI DivX MPEG to DVD Converter & Burner 1.4 " but it wont play sound on my DVD player.

the DVD will play sound in both My HTPC and my PC but not on the DVD player...

I am assuming it might not be an AC3 encoded file ,but how can I figure that out?

and good freeware avi to DVD converters?

BTW I also made a couple VCD's and it worked perfectly but the quality was horrable...

@ reaper....

Couple of questions please.

The video (Avi Raw) is now complete, and at 2 1/2GB or so. However, it will not play/preview. G-Spot saws file truncated. In addition, it also says codec not required. I can post details of this here if need be, however, I can't believe I spent the last 24 hours rendering a file that will not play.

Won't play in Jet Audio, BS Player or VLC.

Ideas?

reaper
10-24-05, 08:39 PM
A raw avi file that big will not play on the typical PC. You will have to bring it into a DVD burning software that will scale it down for the DVD.

I would agree that a codec is not required since avi raw should be supported by most players.

Don't try to play the file. If you really want to see it, bring it into some software and compresses it with a codec of some sort and write out the compressed version to a *DIFFERENT* file name. VirtualDub will do this for you. At that point, you can play the file assuming you have the codec installed.

Make sense?

daTerminehtor
10-24-05, 09:19 PM
Perfect sense, I'll report back.

Thanks for staying with me on this. :P

daTerminehtor
10-24-05, 10:02 PM
Argh, can ya tell I'm getting a little frustrated here?

Perhaps its best if I just start over (rendering I mean).
Is it possible for you to show/type the acutal settings for the creation of the raw avi? Clearly I've done something wrong here.

reaper
10-24-05, 10:19 PM
Sure it's possible to see the seetings in the blender file. I didn't make yours so I can't see them.

daTerminehtor
10-24-05, 10:28 PM
:P

What I mean is, 'assume' I've changed the wording accordingly, what would be the proper settings in order to output the avi accordingly. Because its become apparent to me, that its beyond me with a little more guidance. I should've picked up on this when (despite having a p4 @3.2 and 1gb of ddr) rendering took over 1 full day.

However, I can send you the blend file if needed.. Anything you could do for me on this would obviously, be most helpful, and appreciated.

daTerminehtor,

I received your .blend file this morning and made the following adjustments:

1. Settings were not NTSC. It was set to 720x400, 1:1. Set it to NTSC.
2. Setting was not AVI Raw. It was set to targa. Set it to AVI Raw.
3. Modelling of the letters was done incorrectly so that the top line became unreadable @ frame 650. Changed modelling.
4. Top line did not have the proper material settings so the color was different. Changed material.
5. Modelling of the platforms was enlarged to further hide lettering. Changed modelling.
6. Failed to remove author's name. This would result in lettering flying in front of the camera around the middle of the animation. Removed lettering.

I am not sure that any of that would have made the output unusable. But I guess you might try rendering the avi raw file again with what I sent you.

After adding the ac3 to the avi in virtualdub, can i add it to my movie maker program (I am creating a 20 min triva file to run right before my HT trailer) or will this lose the ac3 encoding of the avi file i just created?

Or is it just going to be easier to make them 2 seperate files ands then tell the dvd to play them back to back?

any help on that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your work.

I have been putting together a Coca-Cola pre-show slideshow and a Custom "Fox" trailer will be a great opening slide. I am using DVD-Lab pro (thirty day trial).
From the trailer website that has been linked, http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/trailers.php I took the 20th Century Fox VOB and used DVD-Lab pro to pull out the AC3, but it said the AC3 file was corrupt and tried to repair it. It was successful, but only shows 2 channels. I tried the Fox Home Entertainment VOB from the same page and was able to pull out the AC3 file. It is shown as 6 channel audio.

Making a pre-show has grown from something fun to do to an obsession. I like it! :p

Alan,

The easiest way to make it a backlit sign is to print it out on an inkjet printer onto clear decal film (available at Staples or any good office supply store). When you print it, print it mirror imaged (i.e reversed) You can then apply the decal to the back of a piece of Plexiglas and will have a nice translucent sign you can illuminate any way you choose.

-Gary.

In the meantime, if you want a small one, you can also print it out on an overhead transparency that you can also put on plexiglass or in a window so it will look like stained glass with the light shining through.

Thanks, It looks great Reaper. Although I was originally content with the still image, I ran the Blender program with the Blender file you sent me (for about 20 hours) and am very happy with the result. It is one thing to see the video play on your computer screen, but once you see it play on your TV it is really incredible.
It isn't that hard to modify the text to try an alternate theater name.

Congrats on the new addition (the baby, not the theater room). I just discovered the great news. Not sure "Reaper Jr" will be appropriate, kid might be feared at school which could lead to antisocial behavior. "Bud" on the other hand might be a feasible alternative!

Anyone know a source for short video clips like the old film countdown you used to see on reels of film prior to the start of a film? I was thinking it would be sorta funny to have what looks like a scratched film start with the countdown prior to the start of the 20th century theater intro. I managed to get just a black screen with what looks like scratches in the film using windows movie maker, but there's no "scratchy" audio to go with it so it's sort of boring.

Congrats on your pending arrival...

I just married off my oldest daughter two weeks ago. They do grow up so fast ! Take your time and enjoy them while you have them ! It seems like just last year I was taking her to school and putting bandaides on boo-boo's.

Her new husband is a jet jock in the Air Force and he is taking my baby to some far off place :( .

On another note...I started the render for the animation yesterday at 4:00pm CST and it is still running !!! I am running it on a 3.2Ghz Prescott (so it thinks it has two processors) and it is still chugging...

Reaper,

Can you or anyone give me an idea how many frames the render produces ? I have been running this since Wednesday and so far 650 frames have been produced.

Can anyone give me a count of frames they got ?

Chris

dllewel
11-18-05, 05:28 PM
It is exactly 650 frames. Your render is probably done. The text will list each frame written ending with # 650. Take a look in the output folder, usually c:\render and look for an .avi file that is larger than 600 MB in size.

It will probably play choppy due to it's high bitrate (raw avi uncompressed), but the video is probably fine and ready to use in another editor or burner to combine with music and output to DVD or a compressed mpeg file. Good luck.

Oh, and congratulations Reaper on the new little one. :)

This is awesome, but I'm really stumped on why the heck it takes so long for these things to render in simple NTSC resolution?

I have done a fair amount of video work with Adobe Premiere and, back when I had an 800mhz PII it used to take a while (maybe an hour or so) to render a fair sized video (30mins) but now, it doesn't really take any time at all - even when it has to render individual frames. What in the heck is Blender doing that is taking so long?

Okay - after that rant, can I have one too....? :o

Welcome to

ebr,

I don't know why it takes so long. I know that it can be a lot faster if you turn off the antialasting over sampling, or the ray tracing for reflections of light on the letters and shadows. Blender seems pretty efficient in all respects for what it does. Maybe the ray tracing is something the other programs you are using doesn't use? Maybe not.

Anyway, it's certainly does a good job and worth the wait :D

Here is a link to your image (http://ravenmanor.com/scratch/The Reeds Home Theater Fox Logo.jpg) .

Provide your e-mail (PM or here) if you want me to send the blender project file.

Now, how do I get the audio file so I can have the whole package...?

I simply just ripped the audio off the "Alan" theatre video from an eailier post. Then used VirtualDub to rip the audio to WAV, then compress the raw rendered file to Xvid (for use on XBMC) using the ripped WAV as the audio source.

For referance:
24hr render (interruptedby a scheduled, overnight virus scan)
AMD AthlonXP 2100 (Down-Clocked at 1.25GHz)

Has anyone tried submitting their still image to an online printing service to get a poster-size print of it?

There's a free poster-size print available from shutterfly, but I think it expires after today (sorry). You have to first go to amazon.com, and then click on the shutterfly ad. When checking out, use code AME3-FREE to get your poster-size print (16-by-20 inch, a $17.99 value) for free.

You still have to pay shipping.

12-01-05, 02:38 PM
HTJunkie,

Anyone can render these images at whatever resolution they want. So, you or I could create one at say 2x the resolution of 1280x720. This might mkae for a better printout if you were going that route.

The blender model is the source for this image. It is a 3d model that contains all the geometry, lighting and the ability to create the images seen in this thread. You can also use it to create the entire fox intro movie where the camera pans around this structure and the lights move back and forth. Then you can even add the 20th century sound and play it in your theater before movies start.

If you want the video, I usually just send the blender model, you install blender and then create the movie on your computer and add sound. There is a lot of discussion in this thread about how to accomplish these tasks.

Hope that helps...

You don't HAVE to have all caps. In fact, look at the image on the top of the very page you asked the question. No caps on the j. The problem is that letters like j go into the line. It looks a little silly unless you move them up like I did with his j. But his was an exception since it read more like a logo than a whole word. I can certainly try a request with lower case if you want but I can't promise you'll be happy with it...

Does it look OK to you? If so, I still need your address to mail the blender model. I set all the models to the NTSC standard. Most people prefer it and I think they simply let it stretch a little bit to become 16x9 when they make their DVDs. However, if you want to render the video in 1280x720, you can do that by clicking the FULL button on the bottom right and then holding shift and clicking on the 1024 number. Erase 1024 and type 720. Then you'd be good to go with that res. This advice applies to anyone who wants to do this. The render times will be significantly longer, fyi.

Reaper (or to anyone else who can answer):

Last night, at 9:30pm CST, I started rendering my model with Blender. I came downstairs at 8:30pm tonight (23 hours later), and the darn thing is on frame 68.

When I look at that DOS-looking window, it's telling me each frame is taking about 22 to 25 minutes to render. At this rate, I might be done in another 8 days or so (to get to 650 frames).

I'm running this on my Sony VAIO 2.4 GHz P4, with 1GB RAM. The CPU is absolutely pegged at 100% (according to task manager). I'm not running anything else, and task manager confirms that no other processes are getting a share of the CPU's cycles.

I'm thinking that maybe the resolution is still set at the high level Reaper used to create a 2X resolution still photo for me. I didn't bother to check that before clicking the ANIM button to begin my render.

Should I kill this render attempt, check the resolution, and start over? I was hoping to have this done on a DVD by Sunday for a crowd coming over.

Any advice appreciated...
ND

ebr
12-05-05, 10:53 PM
I'd stop it. Something is wrong. If you just hit Esc it should stop the full render.

ND23
12-05-05, 11:36 PM
Thanks for the tip on stopping the render process.

Killed it on frame 75. Checked the Format section in Blender (lower right-hand corner, and SizeX is set to 2560, SizeY is 1440, double the settings of 1280x720. I clicked the NTSC button to reset them back to 720 and 480, respectively. Everything else looks right. Started over, rendering looks much faster. Hope this helps anyone else whose render crawls... check your settings first!

Reaper, any chance of getting my still image tonight, in time for this deal (my request is in a post from 11/20)?

No biggie if baby duty calls!

Thanks,
ND

Those of you wanting to take advantage of this free poster-size print offer to get a 16x20 inch print of your logo, there's another way:

go to http://cranium.eprize.net/fun/ and register for a chance to win a neat family fun game. Regardless of whether you win or lose your attempt to win the game, about 20 minutes later you will receive an email with a code for the free poster.

Then, follow the instructions listed at http://www.cranium.com/club/shutterfly.asp to order your poster. You'll have to pay for shipping (about $5). Oh, and you don't have to add the "cranium" border to your print.

Enjoy!

...if you want to render the video in 1280x720, you can do that by clicking the FULL button on the bottom right and then holding shift and clicking on the 1024 number. Erase 1024 and type 720. Then you'd be good to go with that res. This advice applies to anyone who wants to do this.

Thanks for this tip. Tried this and it seems to cut off the top of the image. Any suggestions?

Thanks for this tip. Tried this and it seems to cut off the top of the image. Any suggestions?

Try changing the AspX setting to change the aspect ratio slightly. Lowering the AspX number should make the viewable image taller. This setting is found below the SizeX control, that you have set to 1280.

If the change seems to be too much, just double both the AspX and AspY to maintain the same aspect ratio. You can set these to whatever you want (just be careful not to save the file if you mess up). The higher these numbers, the finer amount of control you have to tweak.

You just e-mailed me 2 questions. When I replied, my mail bounced again:

How do I save the file and how do I add audio:

It automatically dumps the file into a dir on your hard drive. That dir is
defined on the left side of the blender interface. I think it should be
something like c:\render or c:\tmp

You can add stereo music with virtualDub. Do a search for it on the thread.

Got my free print of my logo from Shutterfly (I posted instructions previously in this thread). Went to Michael's for a simple $10 frame, and got it hung up tonight. Here are two pics, one from afar to show the scale in comparison to nearby 24"x36" posters and a 32" wide door, plus a closeup to show how nice the resolution is when you double the resolution to make your still image; this is probably only necessary when blowing the image up to this size or larger.

The generic intro that Reaper did has been posted for download at:

http://www.stargateunofficial.com/HT_Downloads.asp

Jake,

you can get the generic blender file at the above (posted by Powers a few months ago) instructions are in this thread on how to edit. Before you do, download a copy of Blender at:

http://www.blender3d.org

NOTE: Reaper has been recommending downloading the older version of Blender v. 2.37a.

Pick up the audio here:

Good luck with Blender, that is one confusing program! Just goes to show Reaper's talents.

Hey man, glad it worked out for you and you didn't even have to leave the comfy environment of your Mac! :) You were ready to be satisfied with the still image alone. Were you able to merge the audio and video on your mac? On PC, we've been using the virtualDub software but you probably have some Mac software to do the same thing eh? Well, enjoy the new intro. It's a fun little addition to the theater.
