Hey man, glad it worked out for you and you didn't even have to leave the comfy environment of your Mac! :) You were ready to be satisfied with the still image alone. Were you able to merge the audio and video on your mac? On PC, we've been using the virtualDub software but you probably have some Mac software to do the same thing eh? Well, enjoy the new intro. It's a fun little addition to the theater.

reap

ps. I got your donation. Thank you very much

Yep, audio and video is a synch on the Mac. Simply pulled the animation into iMovie, dropped in the audio, trimmed it up a bit, and hit the "Send to iDVD" button. I'll post a mini version of it soon.

Thanks!

If anyone is interested, I could print out poster sized pictures from JPG files for about $18.00; 24"wide by 36" long. That way you could display your theater logo like the other posters you display of movies you show. I have PayPal, so I believe I could accept payment that way. Note - this is stuff you created or had created for yourself, no copyrighted stuff (unless you own the copyright :)

Thanks

Can it be sized down at all? I am looking to use it on a maytag skybox. Also, it would need to be on a material that would allow light to come through similar to a movie poster. Or if it were on a clear material, I could mount it to some type of light diffuser. I would be very interested in that application.

Thanks for showing off your video. I presume the flickering textures were an artifact of shrinking it. The original doesn't do that right? Anyways, looks very cool.

I promise to deliver the other requests in the next few days. I was hoping it would happen this weekend... but it was one of those weekends... you know.

TazDevl

Let Blender do it's thing over the weekend on my work PC. I used the blender file from the stargateunofficial site

For reasons unknown to me the bottom half of the text has flickering in it. Could the reason be that I used the option to render with both (hyper-) threads?

Could you make a animated blender file with:

Top: WELCOME
Middle: TO THE
Bottom: AUDITORIUM

reaper
01-09-06, 10:57 AM
That does sound odd. I have never used the threading option so it certainly sounds like a likely candidate for causing this kind of behavior. The only other thing that comes to mind is that Blender gets confused about texture appearance when two surfaces are coincident. So, if you have two copies of the text in the same location, this could happen. You can check this by selecting the text with the right button and then hitting g to move it. If you see you are moving text and another copy is still staying there, hit escape and then delete to remove the selected text. Try moving the text again to verify that there were not more than 2 copies.

I doubt this is the problem since I believe others have used that file. So, I would try rendering it without the threading option.

I can also produce the model you requested...

I finally got around to finishing up my video this weekend. I used Sony vegas movie studio and it worked great. the only glitch was I had to convert the mp3 file to a wav file but it was very easy.

DMILANI

I've used both resolutions when doing 1:1 mapping from a HTPC, and 1368 works better (shows more of the Windows desktop).

Anyway, it doesn't really matter too much, as the HS10's scaler is excellent, and even 1280x720 would have looked great.

I am interested in making my own theater logo and other into material to show whenever I am showing a movie. Do you have this intro logo and animation on a separate DVD and remove it and put in the movie DVD or is it on the computer and shows from the computer then you play the movie DVD? I want them to merge together and be seamless but unless the intro and actual movie were on the same DVD, I am not sure how to do it.

Do you have this intro logo and animation on a separate DVD and remove it and put in the movie DVD Some people switch between the intro disk and the main feature, but the really vain people (such as myself) use a 2nd DVD player to play the intro. That way as soon as the intro is done playing you can just switch inputs on your receiver/preamp to your main DVD player that has the main feature cued. With $40 DVD players, it isn't all that crazy.... maybe a little.

I have some problems with the rendering. Anyone can provide any help?

- The avi file is 4:3, in PAL I have gotten studio9 to render it as a 16:9 file with sucsess (what I did Im not sure as I cant seem to do the same operation again).
In NTSC there is no way I can get the file as 16:9. What program to use to render a MPEG, NTSC and 16:9 file?

- When importing the NTSC file into dvd authoring software I get the error that the file is 30FPS and must be 29.97FPS. Can I render it in the 3d program as 29.97FPS?

But so far the animation looks fantastic, cant wait to see it on the big screen.
If anyone has the AC3 file and would be kind enough to mail me it at kafjelde (a) hotmail (dot) com I sure vould appriciate it.

I found out the issue with the framerate.

I want to encode the rendering as a progressive film. Not videobased as most displays do not deinterlace videobased very good.
I sat the framerate to 24FPS and motion blur to 0.5 to get that film look. Looks FANTASTIC.
Do not know what did it, but rendering with motion blur took the rendering time from 20Hours to over 110hours. Yep, thats right, almost a week on a P4@3.2, 3 gig mem etc.

Now to look at rendering on several computers over a network.

Some people have printed the 1280x720 image with great success. Others have doubled the resolution. You can easily double the resolution by clicking on the "Full" button on the bottom right of the screen and then clicking the 1280 and 1024 numbers. You can change them to something like 2560 and 1440 and then change the avi raw button to jpeg so you get a still image. Next click the render button. You should only get one image that is that last frame. Once the image has rendered, point at it and hit F3 to save it. Just don't try to render the entire movie like this or you'll be waiting for a long long time. Maybe this image will help you visualize:

I rendered my intro last night 12 hours!! When I played it via MS Media player I'm getting the exact flicker that CptnRandy has on his clip. Even in full screen it is pretty bad. Anyody else have this issue? I used the latest version of Blender and I think I read somewhere that an older version should be used?

Arom,

I just rendered your entire animation at 25% size and then watched it. I too saw the flickering. I was using 2.40. I went back and started up my installation of 2.37a and re-rendered the first 1/5 of it or so. This time I saw no flickering. So, I believe back versioning to 2.37a will fix the problem.

Note to all: My recent e-mail deliveries of the model contained a reccommendation to use Blender 2.4. Due to this finding, I will revert to my recc for 2.37a.

Sorry about the problem and lost time, Arom. Please try 2.37a and let us know if it works for you.

There is another batch on its way. I am just trying to juggle my family, 80+ hr work weeks at my day job and rendering theaters in the background. So, this is at the bottom of my priority list but still there. Sorry for the delay guys. Feel free to let them mount up in this thread or my PM box and I promise to fulfill them soon :)

For all you guys rendering these flicks at home I highly recommend rendering with motion blur on. The end result just looks that much better and much more smoothness to the flick.

The rendering time goes from 20h to 100h for 650frames on the other hand.

Did you use 2.37a? We had that problem before and noticed some issue with 2.4 that I never debugged... but most people seemed to get it to work with 2.37a

Spark
02-24-06, 08:54 PM
I downloaded and used version 2.41 so that may be the issue. I just downloaded 2.37a from another site and installed it.

I will render again and see what it looks like. The flashing is strange and only happens in the base under the words. It appears that the base while rendering switches to having light on it vs. no having light on it. It switches between the two stages through the entire render.

I will let you know if using 2.37a fixes this since it is a version no longer available on the site. Let me know if anyone needs the other site to get 2.37a.

While we are asking background questions: do you know how to extend the background to be a full sphere (or at least wrap around the front also)? I changed the flight path of the camera and was going to have it fly through the "O" in Welcome on the top line, but there is no "background" when looking forward of the platform...so I compromised for now by having the camera back-out of the "O" then do the rest of it's flight.

Thanks.

I don't know about pausing the rendering but you could just kill it and then start the rendering again from a different starting frame. Then tack the pieces altogether at the end with another piece of software...

It's easy. I do it every week to burn a DVD of theatrical trailers downloaded from the net to play before each movies. I use ULead DVD Workshop to grab all my MPEG2 files and create the DVD. However, all my trailers have to be converted to MPEG2 first. For that, I use TMPGEnc to do the job.

But in the case of the AVI generated out of Blender, I need to add an audio track to the video and then convert it to MPEG2. So I'll try with Pinnacle Studio 10 to see how it'll work. I think it should work fine, though.

Not really. If you have an HTPC, there are programs that can play an intro before the main feature movie. If you are using single regular DVD player, you will need to make an Intro DVD, play it, change to the movie DVD and play it. If you have two DVD players (or a DVD changer), you can play the intro in one, switch inputs, then start the movie.

I have two DVD players, so I queue the main feature to the start of the movie (past the menu and FBI warnings) in one player and queue my intro DVD in the other player. I start the intro and as it finishes, I run a macro on my programmable remote control to switch inputs on the TV to the second DVD player and start the movie going.

reaper
02-28-06, 03:39 PM
He's saying he does it every time he *burns* a DVD. For this intro you only need to *burn* the DVD one time. Then you have a DVD for the rest of your life. You can play it whenever you wish.

You are asking how one could set this up to be shown before your movie event every time. There are a slew of options that work for some and not for others.

1. Some people have found ways to replace a startup image in some of their equipment. Perhaps you have a projector that allows you to change the startup image or there is a hack to force it in there. That is one way to have a look at a still image from this animation every time you start your theater up. Other people may have found a way to do the same thing in the DVD player. I have not specifically heard of that one, but it's a possibility.

2. Some people have HTPCs which are used to play their DVD movies in their theater. One guy was able to use his theater HTPC software to play this clip from the hard drive every time he watches a movie. He simply told his software in some manner that this file should play before any movie starts.

3. Other peoply simply use the DVD they created by placing it into their DVD player and playing it before the movie. Others have improved upon this methodology slightly by getting a multi disc player and playing this disc and then switching to the next disc for the movie.

So, there are many ways that one could implement this intro still image or movie in their theater. Which one is right for, no one knows. And I think it is up to you to understand how your equipment works and find a way to get your desired result. Perhaps you might have better luck if you decide exactly what you want to do and then ask how to do it in the thread/forum that has experts on that topic. For instance, if you decide you'd really like to simply show the still image as a startup picture and you hope there is some way to do this on your DVD player, maybe you should start a thread on the DVD forum and ask if it is possible to replace the start up image on that particular player. Or perhaps there already is a lengthy thread about that player that contains the answer or a viewer-ship of experts who could answer it.

I hope that helps...

I have a Sony 5-discs DVD player. I put all my discs in and when the trailer DVD is done, it switches to disc 2 which is the movie. Maybe one day I'll switch to an HTPC. :)

I finally got my animation fully rendered and it's looking really cool. However, there's an annoying flicker at the base in front of the spotlight shining on the text. Ever seen that, reaper? Is it a setting I'm missing when rendering the animation?

I just received and installed this today. I had the photo you created for me blown up to the same size as my maytag skybox marquee and it turned out great. It was difficult to get a great picture given the backlight and other lighting issues in my theater but I am very pleased with how it turned out. I want to thank you for doing such great work with the image and fellow avs'er Perry.Dollar for helping me come up with a way to do this and get it onto media that worked for me.

First off, awesome HT "snack" area!!! I love it!

Where did you get the image printed? A national chain? I have a skybox too and would like to do the same...

FAQ I'm sure but...

Hi Guys, I have my .blend image from Reaper from way back when, and I created a huge .avi from it which I then compressed to a much more manageable DIVX file.

anyway, it appears I've lost my original huge "source" .avi file, and I'm getting ready to recreate it.

What are the current "best settings" in Blender for creating a nice avi?
Also, my current DIVX (and original source AVI file) are 16:9. Can someone direct me on what I need to do to create a anamorphic ("vertically squeezed") 2.35 .avi (which I'll then unsqueeze with the HTPC and stretch with my anamorphic lens.)
Using VideoReDo I was never able to get sound when combining my DIVX file with a 5.1 channel .ac3 file. I was only able to get sound when muxing the video file with a 2-channel .mp3 file. (this is sound of the 20th Century Fox "fanfare.") I follow the same steps with each, and everything appeared to process fine, but the new file always reports as having no audio track when I use the .ac3 file. Is there an extra step or trick to proper muxing when using a .ac3 audio file?

Thanks!

Just make a completely blank non-overlapping text screen. I made one of 3 seconds to give time for my DVD player and receiver to adjust the audio.

To be honest, I am not exactly sure what to do with this one? Anyone want to give me a little help on best setting for aspect ratio and sizeX/sizeY settings? My only thought was to keep aspect ratio at 1x1 and set the resolution to 2350x1000. You could possibly render the video at 1/2 size? Another thought was to just render it at NTSC and let your projector stretch it to 2.35 to 1. Not sure... any help?

FWIW, I just rendered the trailer using 2.41 and it contains the dreaded "flicker."

I previously had rendered with 2.37 with no flicker (I've since lost that raw .avi hence my need to re-render.)

I render with 2.37a and report back.

Thanks.

These are the instructions posted on page 4 of this thread. I have not tried it myself, but seems like it should work. Let me know if it works....

video_ts file.. kinda a long process, but heres how i did it.
i used
http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_download.html [FREEWARE]
TMPGEnc to convert the AVI file (and add the sound) into a usable MPG. you have to convert it to mpg first before making the dvd video.

in the wizard. just
select "NTSC 16:9" then
"CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2)" in the drop down box
click next

select the video file, (the audio file will auto populate, change that to the audio mp3 file if it doesnt have the audio yet else leave it alone)

under the Aspect ratio select "4:3 525 line (NTSC, 704x480)"
click next
click next again
click next one more time
then click ok.

your file should now be a high quality mpg

last program
http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda16.html
TMPGenc DVD Author [TRIAL VERSION]
click, "create new project"
click "add file" and select the mpg you just made
click "OK" in that window
accross the top, click "Create Menu"
select "No Menu" in the drop down box on the left
accross the top, click "Outut"
check off the box "Create DVD folder"
click begin output

whole process will take 15 mins (depending on PC speed).. and it will make the needed VIDEO_TS files (VOB files)

Thanks!

Did I e-mail you a file. Every e-mail I have sent in the recent past has included instructions to download 2.37a. Not sure if this problem happens on a mac but it certainly does on a PC. You may have to restart. Sorry about that.
I got the e-mail, just didn't read the directions! ;) Nothing for you to be sorry about.
I installed blender a few weeks ago when I came upon this thread and wanted to learn a little before putting my request in. No big deal if I have to re-render. Just a little computer time. It's not like the '70s when you have to *pay* for computer time!

Reaper,

Don't worry about it...just do a standard 16:9 and that will be fine...just thought it might be something simple. Besides, I can burn one for the downstairs setup on the HP Dlp.

Thanks again!

For those of you keeping score at home, I'm rendering on a Mac Mini with a 1.25GHz PPC CPU, 512MB RAM, 32MB ATI Radeon 9200. I'm 24 hours in and only on frame 230. <sigh>
Now I know Wintel PC's are faster!

OMG Kent Fleshman! Did you ever get all those renders I did for you!?

Reaper,

No, I didn't...as a matter of fact, the last I remember corresponding with you, I had gotten nixed on the renders by my wife (read: money$), and had to (sigh) do without and assumed that you wouldn't be doing any. I do remember discussing the project with you and do recall you sending me a pic of the flicker bulbs but to my knowledge, that was the last that we talked.

Oh my! I was so bored at the time, I modelled and rendered your entire theater idea for free! I still have some of it sitting around. It's not my best work but it certainly gives you the idea of what you wanted to see!

I was sending you e-mails for the longest time with no response. I didn't know what had happened to you :(

I had moved into a rental while the house that burned was being rebuilt...then my computer was off for repair for awhile...had I known you had tried to contact me, I certainly would have responded. My account at time warner changed due to the company that had us set up in the rental (was in their name). I pretty much had to start over, even had to send computer in for some warranty work.

Anyway, it is uncanny how close this is to my concept. Did I send you any of my poor attempts, because if not, you are beyond amazing. The only thing different from what you have, is basically a 6 ft. window opening on the right wall, about 7 1/2' off the back wall. It will be treated with heavy blue velvet curtains, and an automated black out shade. There will also be matching blue curtains on the stage will will disappear behind the "scenery flats." Excellent job on the scenery as well...where did you get the images?

The door leading out the back of the room, will say "Exit to alley" on the inside, and "Stage Door" on the outside (entering the room) as if entering the back of the theatre through the actor's stage door entrance. Hence, the Stage Door Cinema.

Thanks!

Will also be going with a faux burgundy leather look, with antique gold accents faux treated to look like the gold leaf has started to wear. Will have a cove mould dropped about a foot off the ceiling with rope light. Can't quite tell, are those Hirschfeld charicature drawings on the right wall? Awesome!

Little did you know, but I have actually done the role of Tony twice in West Side Story. I will have movie posters as well, possibly on the back wall, and definitely a poster lightbox outside the theatre in the "Stage Door Canteen."

Thanks again...I'll try to post some progress pics.
