First of all, the rendered video plus Fox sound is REALLY cool. It even impressed my wife which is hard to do with my HT hobby. :) Thanks reaper and everyone else for helping with this.

I do have a question though. I followed Robbo's instructions on Page 58 of this thread to make the video. When I play it back, it does play back widescreen, but it does not fill up the entire 16:9 frame (1.78). It seems to be somewhere between 1.78:1 and 2.35:1. I get black bars on the top and bottom.

Does anyone know how to get rid of those?

Reaper - Got the file and works great! Thank you so much for doing this.

Robbo - I really appreciate your instructions on how to add the audio and convert to dvd. I would have had no clue.

Others have mentioned adding fade (or other) techniques to transition from this. I would be really interested in learning how to accomplish this. If anyone can enlighten us computer-challenged people, that would be awesome.

I'd also like to learn how I could transition out of the intro and into a "Enjoy the show" type of screen and then again have a graceful transition out of that leading into the movie.

Is there an easy way to accomplish any of this?

Thanks,

Mark.

What do you guys use for compression to play it on the HTPC? The original and all the other compression methods skip and stutter on my HTPC, but it plays fine on my normal PC. The HTPC is not as fast as my normal one.

Mark,

What you are talking about is something you can do with a movie editor, like Roxio or Pinnacle or something. I took the raw AVI from blender and then imported it into the video editor. Added about 3 seconds of black before the animation, and then faded it to black at the end. You could then fade into another still image with your "Enjoy the show" screen as part of the same movie. Once you have the video how you want, export it to a high quality mpeg or something that you can then use with the audio for your DVD.

I have been running the (2) DVD player setup for a while now and it works great. I get the feature movie cued up on the main DVD player, paused at the start of the first chapter- then switch over to the DVD player with the intro. As previously described, I've created a custom macro to dim the lights, play the intro, and then switch inputs to the movie DVD and start playing.

It certainly can be done, it just takes some time and experimentation.

The RAW file is so large that it stutters due to limited I/O. You would want to use a video editor of your choice to output the video (and audio) as something of smaller file size using a video codec (mpeg, wmv, etc).

Reaper,

You must be overwhelmed! I'm pretty new to all of this (as you can see...it's my first post) and have been following along on all of the different threads as much as possible....this thing called work just keeps getting in the way! I'm not even sure what I want to call my home theater yet but the possible choices are The Man Cave Theater or Swamp Theater (there's a swamp behind my house)...or something like that. Anyway, I'm going through the Noob to Pro Blender tutorial right now and read the instructions on page 58 of this thread and it looks like the first step is to get the Blender file from you. The pressure you must feel....but hey...stardom has it's cost!

Bottom line is that if you do not have time to create another one then if you could email a Blender file to me I'll try to create it from there....I might even learn something. If you do have the time then let's go with

I did some research/fittling to understand how to get a true 16:9 video of the logo. As a basis, I am using the instructions posted on page 58 of this thread to create the video.

It is true that DVDs have a resolution of 720x480. However, this is not what you want to render the video in out of blender. If you do, then avi2dvd will treat this as a 1.50 ratio video rather than a 1.78. Thus, it resizes the video and then adds black borders to the top and bottom. I verified this by looking at the temporary avisynth script that is uses to massage the video.

If you pick a true 16:9 resolution, then avi2dvd simply will resize the video to fit into a 720x480 frame without adding any black borders. I tried this and the script did not add any black borders. I need to re-render my video as a true 16:9 and run through the process to double check, but I am pretty confident it will be OK.

Now, here are some true 16:9 resolutions:

832x468
800x450
768x432
736x414
704x396

You just change blender to use this resolution and leave the aspectX/Y at 1. I am not sure which is the best one to use since there is a trade-off in terms of time and quality. Ultimately, the video will be resized to 720x480 so it may not make too big of a difference.

I am going to run a render at 800x450 which, to me, seems like a good middle ground.

I also tried creating a video using the trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements. First, it was a complete piece of cake. Just take the rendered AVI and AC3 sound file, drop them into a project and burn a DVD. There are a few setting changes you have to make but they are quick and easy. It is even really easy to add transitions into and out of the video. However, the trial puts a big "Adobe" logo in the video and also the quality was horrible around the diagonal lines - very jaggy. I am not sure if there is a setting for this or not.

I finished the 800x450 render and it worked perfectly. The video fills the entire 16:9 screen.

Also, you can download the trial of Uleads' VideoStudio 10 Plus to have one tool to merge the video, sound, and cut the DVD. The quality was even better than using avi2dvd (mine showed slight flicker). The trial does not have any limitations, and the DVD worked great.

You can also use the tool to add in the "coke" slide/trivia found in this thread...

Hello Reaper,

I've been working on a DVD-magazine issue for a computer group I am part of and I came across this thread days ago. After trying to save you some time by finding the source and method for producing the Fox sequence video, I can't seem to get it. :)

I have Blender and I found the generic "Fox" source code, but when it loads in Blender there is no text that I can change to my own, no background or textures, and I can seem to find how to animate it into an AVI. New at Blender, I think it would take me weeks to figure it out without any docs, as I have so many ongoing projects.

I would love to see my own text panning across the screen in that intro. Could you do one for me as well?

I'd like mine to rendering to say:

COCO-TV
A SNOW WOLF
PRODUCTION

16:9 ratio

I allowed e-mails to be sent from other members if you wanted to beam the wmv to me or post it here.

THANK YOU!!

While I'm playing around with Blender to try to learn what Reaper is doing, I noticed the Render and Anim buttons in the bottom half of the screen. I clicked Anim and now it's reportedly creating an AVI that seems to be rendering slowly but surely. However, the image is very dark and I'm not sure what it's trying to produce (I pressed a bunch of buttons earlier and probably screwed the file up). Oh well, thanks for backups I can afford to experiment more. Stil, probably no luck in producing what Reaper has done. I see no sky, text, or moving lights.

the reason i ask is i cant ask reaper cos i need to try a few of them (image wise) as we cant make up our minds about the name!

also anyone figured a way of automating it with a HTPC rather then the seperate dvd player to automate before every movie...?? i just spent ages getting rid of a dvd player and am reluctant to reintroduce a new one

has anyone sourced any other blender files for the intros from other big film companies....??

I am impressed with your willingness to help the AVSer's with this project. I am also curious (if you don't mind) to know how much time it takes you to modify these animations for all of these people. Even if it is just a couple of minutes each--it is amazing how many people you have done this for. I downloaded the generic version and blender and started reading the tutorials. WOW! it is not simple for someone with zero experience like me. I'm pretty sure it would take me hours just to change something that some else has already done the hard work on. I don't suppose you could post step by step instructions on how to make the changes could you. It might be a pain to post instructions but then maybe a novice like me could handle it, and you could have a well deserved rest. Then again, maybe it is just too complex. Thanks again from all of us.

I posted some instructions here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6032224&highlight=scale#post6032224

It takes me about 10 minutes for each one as a rough guess. The process is:

0. Find the next job to be done in my PMs or in this thread
1. Modify the model
2. Render an example image at requested resolution, default is 1280x720
3. Upload an image to imageshack so I can post it here. This helps catch mistakes I make... I'm not perfect and have spelled names wrong on a couple occasions :(
4. Post the image here
5. Compose an e-mail and send the model out
6. Follow up with missing e-mails

Some people have tried to help in the past. It has worked out OK for some. Others have not been happy with the results and I have had to re-do the work. I guess I don't mind it much since I just do them every now and then when I have a few minutes over breakfast or while I am watching the kids. Sometimes I get a nice donation and it makes me feel like my time is somewhat compensated for. At all times, I get lots of positive feedback here and feel very good to help the community.

You are welcome to grab one off of the list in this thread, model and render a test image. I just don't want you or the requester to feel bad if it doesn't meet their hopes. So, that's between you guys.

Man--I'm not sure I can do it. I have been messing with it and it seems to be waaaaaay over my head. All those hot keys! Do you see the "Output" section, which will show the name and path of the output file (usually c:\render\000 FOX FINAL.jpg). This is where your file will be after it is rendered.

To render a JPG however, you must first select JPEG from the dropdown list under "Format". You'll also want to make sure you are rendering just frame 650 (the last one) by making sure both Sta: and End: are set to 650 under the "Anim" section.

When you are ready to have it render the actual file, hit the bit ANIM button under the "Anim" section. When it is done, check the c:\render directory for your file.

1. I have heard people report issues of flickering with anything other than 2.37a
2. Change the output type from AVI Raw to JPEG. Ensure the current frame is set to 650. Hit F12. When the image finishes rendering, point at it and hit F3 to save. You can do a still image in 2.42, no problem.

Cool. Can someone show me how to add my own text to the generic Fox animation? When I load it, no text appears. The file renders perfectly to the smooth animation expected, but the decks are empty, ofcourse.

From Blender I chose "Add.. Text" and the word "Text" appears in the rendering in a 2-D plane in the lower-left corner of the screen. I can't edit this or move it around.

Better yet, can someone e-mail me their own .blend file and let me edit the text that they have in place? Either way, I feel like I can have this done on my own computer by tomorrow if somebody can give me a tip or two. I've searched this whole thread and can't find the details of inserting my own text into the animation.

Thanks, guys.

Reaper, the CoCo-TV bitmap rendering looks great. I'm on dialup, so could you just e-mail me the blend file and let me render the avi instead? :)

I set up my forum account so that members can e-mail me directly. It should haved my valid e-mail address to use. Can you do it that way?

By the way, I downloaded the generic blend file from stargateunofficial but Blender does not show any text at all like the web site says it should do. If I can just get a .blend file with 3 rows of text, I can edit that.

Actually, I've been playing around with Blender and have been able to Add text. g-move it, s-resize it, but the x,y,z keys do not do anything. I can't lock the sizing or movement to any axis. If I could I guess I could give the text depth. At first, new text gets a 2-D object and I am having to rotate the animation (by using the left arrow key) to center the decks so that they appear horizontally flat, then I am adding my text where I click the mouse. Rotating the scene more shows that the text was inserted somewhere between the camera and the decks, but not on the decks themselves.

Hmm. I downloaded the latest Blender from their site... do I need an older version? What version are you using?

reaper,

you maybe interested in this...

i found a couple of links to other .blend files. there is a freely available star wars one (with rolling text)...so you have have started a small industry here!!!

i tried to find ones like the start sequence to the matrix (was that the warner logo?), or the paramount one but no look yet...

Hmm. I downloaded the latest Blender from their site... do I need an older version? What version are you using?

Thanks!!

2.37 is a very known stable version. Reaper's probably using/tried both.

Are you hitting 'g' to move, and then x, y, or z?

Has anyone had problems with the audio? The blender worked out great but the audio that I downloaded from the link in this thread cuts off before the end. Did I do something wrong?

I'll try to keep this on-topic but I have tried 3 versions of Blender so far and it looks like for my practical purposes at the moment that 2.42 is rendering the generic Fox-like fanfare video quite well.

However, I am not sure of the exact aspect ratio to render in, and format (NTSC, etc.) that would yield a perfect picture on every DVD player out there. In other words, what's the standard final-ultimate format the AVI needs to be in?

For anybody who has been reading this thread and yearning to do their own video or bitmap of the pictures you're seeing, with your own text, I suggest asking Reaper for the .blend file and then learning how to alter the text yourself.

Moving the decks up and down seems a bit difficult since they are each in 2 parts and I can't seem to move both parts at the same time, meaning I have to very carefully move each deck up/down and try to stack the other part of the deck right on top of it with precise spacing. Any idea how to get around this?

Also, the 20th Century Fox fanfare MP3 that I found which is the longer one still runs out before this video ends so you have quite a bit of space at the end to chop off and do your fade-out if you like.

I'm sure my Nero DVD suite can do all of this without using VirtualDub, even the audio track, fade-in, and fade-out. I'll let everyone know how it looks when I'm done.

Thanks Reaper for getting me interested in these kind of projects and for sending me the .blend file I needed!!

Just got finished rendering my first fox-like animation with Blender...15 hours on a P4 laptop so I'm installing Blender on my HTPC so that I'm not late for work next time. I just couldn't stand having to cancel the job after having it run all night.

I'm definitely new to this stuff but I'll say that all of the answers are in this thread. I downloaded the generic .blend file and followed the steps on page 58. I did also go through the first few chapters on the Blender tutorial...that helped a lot! Thanks to everyone who's submitted their experience!

Where did you get your sound clip. I downloaded the AC3 from the link in this tread and it cuts off before the end. I don't know if it is the audio file or whether something just messed up while I was combining the two. Please let me know how yours turns out.

I ran into the same problem with the ac3. AVIMux allows mp3's so I'm going to try & rip the clip from a Star Wars CD....I'll let you know how it turns out. Anybody else run into this? If so, how did you fix it?

Palmtree,

The mp3 seemed to do the trick. I ripped it from the cd, used Windows Movie Maker to combine it all, and Roxio to burn the DVD. I've got some video problems to fix (flicker, fuzziness) that showed up in the rendered avi out of Blender but the audio works great now. Even the failures are cool!

Rookie help, has in I don't know what I'm doing!!!
I have Reaper's blend file and Blender 2.42, I think I have made a mistake on the render I followed the instruction's on page 58 but did not use the resolution they had suggested . I started the animation with what I believe is the resolution of 1280 x 720 wich is what Reaper had sent me, well after 2 days my Computer has of this morning is still rendering I think I was on frame 356 of 650 is this due to the resolution or just my computer? I have a P4 2.8 ghz 1 gig ram onboard. or should I have gone with a lesser resolution to speed up the process 800 x 450? Will the 1280 x 720 even work correctly? Any feedback would be appreciated... Thanks... Joe :o

Lower resolutions will render faster for sure. 1280x720 will work but will need to be played by a HTPC or down res'd to a DVD. That sounds like a long time to render 1280x720 but I have never done it at that size.

Just an FYI for those waiting on an intro file:

I am still doing them but in a holding pattern for the next few days as I am completely buried in my day job and getting hit pretty hard in my side business, Render Reality, as well. Pile kids and a wife on top of that and I am having a hard time finding time to sleep atm. Bottom line, no problem asking and I hope to catch up with the thread but it may be a few days or even a week or more before I can get back on it. Sorry foe the delay again, guys.

If any of you would like to take a crack at making your own image, I have started a thread that explains how to change the text and make your own image. This will take some of the load off of Reaper's shoulders and and let those of you waiting get yours now. Anyway, good luck, and like I said in the other thread, if you have any questions, just ask in that thread. I haven't talked to Reaper about this, but I'm sure that when he gets some time, he'd probably be willing to do them for you again, but it shouldn't take more than an hour to make your own with the walkthrough.

Blazer003 has started a new thread as mentioned earlier and has promised to support his intro. I know there were some outstanding requests. If you guys still need me to do them, let me know. But it seems as though support and interest for this intro have moved to Blazer's thread. Perhaps you will have good luck with his latest file and if not, he will be able to answer your questions. You can find the thread here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=715166

Again, it was great helping out the forum with this intro and I wish Blazer and the forum members the best as they continue to create fun intros. I'll still be around if anyone needs me but for now I am assuming that Blazer has taken responsibility and your requests will go to him.

The AC3 file I have cuts off before it gets to the end--so I'm afraid it won't halp much. I may try to rip the file from a DVD tonight if I can figure out how to do it with DVDDecrypter.

I have lost mine after a crash. :(

I am able to edit one myself, but, am unable to set-up blender as a single screen in order to carry this out.

If someone could please send me theirs, I can then edit it myself.

Hopeful...

Hi, I've just seen the Theatre welcome image you have created and think it is fantastic! I was wondering if there was anyway you could do me a slightly amended one? All I want is it changed to say STAR Radio in the middle section.

We have a presentation to our CEO and it would be fantastic to have that on the screen.

Many thanks :)
