Nice seats Jerrod! Nice progress on the room as well (I've been a silent observer for a while). I got some 088's from Roman as well, but mine were leather. But the ones I received in the boxes were wrapped with a plastic/foam type of wrap. The one not in the box is the loveseat. Wonder what makes them decide to put plastic around them or not?

I have no idea..... I wasn't impressed with the packing that Berkline did, but I still haven't opened all the boxes. I love the look so far. Can't wait to get them in the HT!

Jerrod,

do you remember what material/code your microfibre was? I am going to guess it is the 3075 style

Yeah....... it's #62 on this picture.

While the carpet is being installed, I figured I'd catch up on what I did over the weekend and yesterday (took the day off)....

In the stairwell down to the basement, my builder installed the light and conveniently didn't center the light . So, I had to cut it out and put in some wood and then mounted the light. Here's from the basement looking up....
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1367.jpg

Here's the final product. I really like this light.
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1376.jpg

I used left over bead board for the front of the riser. You won't see this once the chairs are in so I didn't spend a lot of time on this....
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1369.jpg

I got the HT door stained and I just have to say wow! It really came out nice and only 1 coat. The door is mahoghany and it just soaked up the stain and really made a nice look! I put 1 coat of poly on the door and frame.

More pics of the rest of the basement.....

Here's the area underneath the stairs where the whole house audio and wiring is. This pic shows the wiring coming thru the ceiling. I took these 2" plastic couplers and mounted them in wood and then screwed it to the drywall and put it up. Worked out nice....
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1375.jpg

Here's a pic of everything with a coat of mud. I'm not doing anything more in here, except maybe a coat of paint. No sanding or anything... I have a PureAV UPS and an old Kenwood receiver to run the speakers in the pool table/bar area.
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1377.jpg

Here's the rest of the basment before the carpet.....

http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1380.jpg

I used left over scraps of drywall in the old HVAC room just to help hold insualtion in place. I don't know if I'll drywall the whole room in the future or not...???

http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1381.jpg

All of this junk is in the bar area. This will have hardwoods/laminate down the line.... Glad it's not carpet because I don't know where I would have put all this crap!

You and Bud will get along really well :D Seriously, I've had my fun with stain too. My garage floor is splattered with brown stain that will be there forever. One of these days I'll paint the floor like Ronnie did.

Your room is looking great. I like the idea of the kids "mini" movie room. I may have to do that in our game room once it surfaces to the top of the Honey Do list. The longer it takes me to finish the HT, the more items my wife adds to the list. I think she is trying to tel me something but I just can't figure it out  I did tell her I want a few weeks off before I embark on the next item on the list (to I can enjoy the room a little).

http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1398.jpg

And now the theater. This carpet is so thick.... with the premium pad it's almost like walking on a sponge or something like that. You just sink into the carpet. Main reason for this is for any kids/friends that want to sit/lay on the floor during movies. I wanted it to be comfortable....

First, here's the hall outside the room.
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/IMG_1424.jpg

Here's the stage. My daughter grabbed a bunch of pillows and was jumping all over the place.

Thanks everyone!

The HT carpet is Mohawk (I think) and the pattern is Madrigal. It is very, very thick. I know I've said it before, but it really is.

The rest of the basement is Calliope by Stainmaster. I think I said it before, but I got it at Lowe's. All 20% off and with 12 months no interest or financing. You can't beat that!

Thanks! My wife and I really like it too. It was expensive, but it was so soft compared to other carpets. We said let's spend more now and be happy with for years and years. The 12 months no interest financing helped make that decision too. :D

The threshold was kind of a must have. That wall is a 2x8 staggered stud wall and I wanted a threshold to help seal the door to keep sound in the room. It also made a nice transmission between the 2 carpets.

That's strange because I just flew to Toronto from Pennsylvania last week without a passport (recently expired). They let me in with just a drivers license and birth certificate. They're not supposed to start requiring passports until 2007.

Birth certificate works on January 2007. After that, you need a passport. I don't carry my birth certificate with me so I was screwed. They wouldn't accept a faxed copy of it either.

I know you put a lot of effort into sound isolation. How is that working out for you? If I remember correctly (without looking through the thread again) you used gg on the ceiling but not on the walls. Double drywall on the walls and rsic clips on the ceiling correct?

So far, I am thrilled. Last night, I had a couple friends over and we watched some demo's of Saving Private Ryan and LOTR. I have the receiver at reference level (-0db) and my wife could faintly here it upstairs. Keep in mind that I don't have the door sealed yet and there's still an opening above the door where I haven't even drywalled yet.

I used DC04 clips on all 4 walls to decouple them from the rest of the house. I used regular RSIC on the ceiling with DD and Green Glue. No Green Glue on the walls.

I can't imagine it being much better than that..... especially since my wife can't hear anything. She was skeptical about me buying the RSIC clips, double drywall, green glue and all that. I think she's happy I did it.... and so am I!

Nice - that's encouraging for those of us considering how much sound isolation to use.

Do you have an SPL meter? Unfortunately, reference level on your receiver doesn't quantify anything.

No Radio Shack meter.... yet. My remote does have a manual SPL meter on it, but I think it only goes to 89dB so it wouldn't be much help..... Let me just say that it's plenty loud and the sound is barely audible upstairs. When I finally get my Hsu VTF3-HO that might change a bit..... :D

Well, I've been away for quite a while.... Enjoying the room, work's been busy lately, the baby, vacation, etc..... Anyways, I've made some progress with things. I guess overall I was just burnt out after 16 months of work. It's been nice to enjoy the room.

First, I finally got my sconces. and wow what a difference. I was worried about the room not being bright enough without ceiling lights, so I ordered sconces with 2 bulbs each. With dimmers, I could dim the room with no problems.... but I wanted things to be bright too. Here's where I bought them (http://www.lights2you.com/Minka_346-14_Wall_Sconce_P11060.cfm) and here are the pics.....

Out in the main room, my wife and I decided on track lights instead of recessed lights. We're going to have a plasma TV on this wall and some pictures. Figured the lighting would accent the pictures...

I've also stained all of the new mahoghany doors and frames. What fun that was! Still have to seal them though. They are all 30" wide doors, including the exterior french doors. Also continued staining woodwork. I still have a ton of that to do. Here's a shot of the doors and a closeup of the molding.....

Thanks Neuner. There were other sconces I liked better, but they wouldn't have worked in the room. I needed sconces that looked good and provided a lot of light since I don't have any recessed cans or other lights (besides the stage).

THe chairs are great. They do show dirt and stuff, but only because they are lighter in color. When I say dirt, I mean dark colored threads from shirts, blankets, etc.... I don't think I'd pick a different color. No stains yet, but they're microfiber and should be easy to clean.

The wood on the walls is just 5.0mm birch bead board I got at Lowe's. It comes in 4x8 sheets and I ripped each piece in to 40" sections.

Jerrod, I know what you are talking about with the pictures, since every time somebody comes over who has seen my web site is still blown away by the actual theater. Seeing it in person and seeing the size of the screen, quality of workmanship and the intensity of the action of a movie is one of those things that the web will never be able to duplicate.

Jerrod,

Looks like we were both scrambling to get stuff done before the family came over. I didn't get as much done as I wanted but there is always Easter for everyone to see it more complete :) I have a bunch of engineers in my family so they can be critical if things do not look just right

Those are some nice doors and the stain color is beautiful. Just curious, what made the shower so expensive? Was it a combo of the tile and hardware or were there some hidden "gotchas" behind the wall you did not consider?

Welcome back. Its funny, I've had a few people recently who I've talked about my HT and basement with that have asked "Ever hear of AVS forum?". It's kind of hard to forget about it, although with all the downtime the last few days ...

Looks great, nice job. It's amazing how much time the other things take, even the little things. Whats left?

I'm an engineer and know what you're saying. :D

The shower was so expensive because I didn't do it. When you add it up, it was around 90-100 square feet of tile. The labor alone was $8 per square foot. I knew I could do it, but I was to the point where I wanted it done in a day, and it needed to be done before Thanksgiving.

Thanks..... it certainly is the little things. Now that the whole basement is clean and habitable, it really sucks having the mitre saw outside. All the back and forth to take a hair off a piece, then I realize I took off too much and the back and forth. Time really flies by!

The major things I have left are most of the molding in the HT, the wine closet, adding stone around the fireplace and outting in cabinets and a sink. There's some other little odds and ends, but that's the bulk of it.

I added sheathing to the outside, insulated it

Then put in the fireplace and framed/drywalled around it. This part will eventually be covered with stone so I wasn't too worried about nice smooth joints.

Here's the electric fireplace. It actually has fairly realistic flames, even though it's just done with lighting. I'm happy with it, and got a good deal at Lowes. It was 20% off and I got the floor model (last one) for an additional 10% off.

AWESOME job on finishing your basement. I just couldn't stop reading your whole thread. Your thread is great and gave me lots of ideas. I have a full page of notes on suppliers just from your posts!

One suggestion I have is to use the patterned fabric to create the rear surround grills instead of the black - assuming it is acoustically transparent, of course. If not, maybe a light color to match the wall fabric better? IMHO, the black just really sticks out like a sore thumb compared to everything else coordinating in the theater...

What do you think of the various acoustic treatments that Brian Pape designed for you? I am getting ready to finish my own basement with a theater and am considering contacting Brian for help in designing it.

BTW, I'm curious - what do you do for a living? Thanks, Jerrod!!!

Glad you liked what I've done so far. The patterned fabric isn't transparent, whereas the black is. I think it will look better once I get the wood trim around the grills instead of how they are now.

As far as the treatments, I am happy with what I have. Looking back on it, I may have went a bit overboard, but I have no complaints about the sound. I do have a couple spots in the mid/upper bass that need some work, but other than that I'm very happy with the room. It's amazing how silent it is without all hard walls. People are surprised when they walk in and the difference in the way their voice sounds. It might be a bit too dead, but still, I like how it sounds. I would use Bryan's expertise again in a second.

I see you are using the Ascend speakers. How do you like them? Do they have any weak areas that you notice? I am considering the CMT-340s for my theater along with an SVS PB12/Ultra 2 sub. I don't think you can beat Ascend or SVS at those pricepoints - they both seem to be great values on paper - but I'm interested in your opinion on how they sound with music and movies. Thanks Jerrod!

So far so good with the Ascends! I really like them and think they are great speakers. For a sub, I'm trying to save my money and get a Hsu VTF3 HO. My neighbor bought the SVS speaker package and sub (the PB12 NSD I think) and it's a good system too. I like mine more, but I'm certainly biased and our rooms are completely different so a comparison really isn't fair. His sub certainly outguns mine (an Onix X-Sub) but that's like comparing a Vette and a Hyundai!

The only thing I wish I had done differently though was went with dipoles. I've watched a lot move TV and movies compared to music, and the surround channels are a bit too directional for my liking, but I knew that when I bought them. Plus, i wanted to keep my columns small and that just didn't work well with dipoles.

For the price, you certainly won't be sad if you buy the Ascends!

You could always sell the Ascends (just the side surrounds) and make your own DIY bi/di-poles like I did. I had the depth restrictions as well - which is the main reason I went the DIY route. My bi-poles are only 6" deep and do quite well in surround duty. I know it not something you want to tackle right now since you have other stuff to do -- but just keep it in the back of your mind.

Room looks great. Oh and are you going to tell us which one in the "New Years Pic" is you?? ;)

I thought about getting the Axion QS8's for my surrounds since they've got so much good press, but I would of needed to do change my column construction. Maybe one of these days I'll go the DIY route. The problem is though, with music, the Ascends sound great. It's only on stuff like Star Wars and things like that where you can really pinpoint the surround location....

As far as the pic, I'm the guy in the striped white shirt sitting on the floor.... hugging the other guy (my neighbor).... Our wives are behind us so it was just a friendly hug! :D

First off, thank you for taking the time to document your construction on this thread. It has been a great help for ideas in planning my own basement.

You mentioned you are happy with the acoustics in your theater. If you had to do it all over again, would you still use bead board on the lower wall and fabric on the top and install it the same way?

I like the design flexibility and look you achieved. I am considering doing a similar treatment in my theater.

No problem, I'm glad it helped.

I would probably do the room the same way, although I would do a few things differently. I would probably look into the fabricmate tracks or something similar. I have a few pieces of fabric that need pulled tight and re-stapled.

If anything, the room is probably a bit too dead and I have a couple of null zones in the 80-100Hz area.... but all in all I'm still very happy with it. The dead side of things means I have very little reflecting noise and I prefer it that way. The room is very quiet and the bead board gives some contrast to the look. I still haven;t finished the molding in there though. :o

That's the biggest PITA I have is all the molding, chair rail, etc....

Nah.... I've really been a slacker this year! I started a new job 2 months ago to get away from traveling so much, and all I've done is travel! My wife is thrilled.

I have done a little in the last couple of weeks. I had 1 remaining closet left to frame and drywall. We were going to make a wine cellar out of it, but I think it's going to turn into something else.... maybe a normal closet or an area for a standup freezer or something. I also had to spend a decent amount of time fixing a number of areas where the fabric wasn't pulled tight anymore. I didn't use tracks or anything like that, so I had to pull it and staple a bunch..... Kind of figured I'd have to do it sooner or later.

Very soon, I'm going to get back in gear and get it done. I've been MIA from AVS for quite a while and have lost track of the other builds and all the new ones.... How's yours coming along? I'll have to check your thread out.

After a long hiatus from doing any real work, I finally go motivated over the weekend and worked on trim/molding. The advice about finishing your HT befiore setting up the projector is so right! I've got over 700 hours on my projector and have enjoyed them.

All I have left in the HT is molding and eventually the star ceiling. Onto the pics.....

Here's a closeup of one of the columns. I made a frame/cover out of 3/8" MDF ( I think it was 3/8") and put corner mold around the outside of it. On the colum itself, I just cut notches out of the corner molding with a utility knife and colored the edge with some stain. Turned out very nice!

In these, I've got all the corner molding installed. All I have left is some baseboard, soffitt molding and around the stage area. I thought I had enough of everything but no luck. More molding to stain...... :(

Once again, no flash and if anything the pics are a bit over exposed. I think it really turned out nice, just need to wrap up the rest of the loose ends. I also need to paint my mounting piece above the projector. Eventually, it will all be covered/hidden by the star ceiling.

I would enjoy seeing some more pics of the projector area if you have them. i just getting started "thinking" about my HT. We are in the process of getting quotes for the framing of the the basement and reading all we can read here on AVS.

I am wondering why projector mounts dont get installed before the drywal? I see that conduit is ran to the area where the projector will be so its positioned is somewhat predetermined?

Thanks.

Thanks! I thought about installing the mount and everything before the drywall, but then it's installed and not coming out unless you tear out drywall. Plus, I used RSIC clips and hat channel, and that doesn't leave too many options for mounting it. Once I had both layers of drywall up, I used the large piece of plywood for mounting and I screwed and glued it to the drywall.hat channel. Hopefully that makes sense....

This picture shows the rows of screws I put into the hat channel.

I wanted to make things somewhat symmetrical, and since I had 2 columns on the rear wall, I thought the side walls would look "bare" with only 1 column per side. It was a lot of extra work to put in the extra 3 columns (2 on one side and 1 on the other), but I'm glad I did. I also figured that the extra columns would help with the sound.

For attachment, I used magnets. In the area with the speakers, I used metal and cut out the edges to keep the columns as small as possible, but still be solid. YOu can see that in the pic below.

I've spent the last month or so trying to get some of the small areas of my basement finished up. I planned all along on building a wine cellar beside the theater, but my wife and I decided against it. Instead, we're going to put in a standup freezer and make DVD shelves. I put in a laminate floor (Pergo) in that closet space.... Pretty easy to install and it looks pretty decent. We weren't too concerned about it completely matching the woodwork.

Here is the bar framed out. Before I go any further, I have to give credit to BuffBaker and his bar. My wife loved it so alot of what I'm building is similar in design.

I was going to screw this to the floor and found that drilling thru ceramic tile wasn't that much fun. So, I bought some heavy duty construction adhesive and glue the base down.

Here the top piece above the bar is installed. I used liquid nails all around and screwed it into the joists as well. My joists run left to right so there's no screws in the middle... just LN. I hd to prop this part up until the LN dried...:) You can also see the bar top installed.

Question - on your stage, are you putting anything on the sides of the speaker boxes to hide the speaker? I quickly ran through your thread (great look btw) and didn't see anything closing them off.

Sorry man, I've got a bit more done, but it came to a screachin halt right before New Years.... Want to tile the bar and counter behind it, and of course the tile we like is nearly $10 a piece. My wife got laid off and is job hunting. We decided it just wasn't worth the money for the tile, kegerator and the rest of the stuff to finish it.

Didn't mean to disappoint you...

BTW, I browsed your thread the other for a minute. You putting in a star ceiling? If so, I gotta go back a bit and start reading. Now that my HT is done, and I got a PS3, I just don't spend much time on here anymore. Once I have the $$$, I'll start my ceiling.

The sides are 3/4" birch plywood that I stained and cut holes in. There's black fabric covering the holes. I got the fabric from Dazian and I think more details are in my thread somewhere. It's transparent. Here are some pictures of it going together.

Jerrod,

Just pulling your chain, man. You know me. Sorry about the wife's job. Hopefully she'll find something soon.

Yeah, I'm going to give it a shot. I have a few ideas and I'm just gathering the prelim information now and will likely begin in March. I have a 360 and will likely get aPS3 at some point. I think I'll get a standalone BD play first though. I like to keep things separate. I play a lot of Tiger Woods, but I do it streaky. In other words, I'll play for 4 hours straight, then play a few nights in a row, then put it down a while. I just got back into Call of Duty 4 the other weekend after a long layover.

Those are the exact two games I'm playing right now too. TW on the Xbox and COD4 on the PC. COD4 is a blast in multiplayer on the PC. I'm really enjoying it after a long hiatus from PC games.

Very cool. I think that's a genius idea. I had curtains on the sides before, but never thought of using them to mask like that. From the pic you attached, it actually looks like they woud normally cover the screen, but were just pulled back to expose it.

Did you do it that way just to make it easier to get to the speakers? It looks very cool, but I was wondering why you didn't just seal the area off with MDF? I'm getting ready to figure out how to do my stage, so I thought I'd pick your brain a little.

Well, I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night..... seriously, thanks. The curtains don't cover the screen. They're just short curtains that are perpendicular to the stage.

It's easier to get to the speakers. Plus, my HVAC return in the room is on the left side and my sub is on the right side. Take a look at the 2 pictures below and you'll see what I mean. The HVAC return is the box on the upper left of the first pic. I also put a lot a bass trapping cotton in the corners, and 2" OC703. I just never thought about building it in.

Yeah, I pulled component video, digital audio, RG6, doorbell wire and alarm system wiring there. I don't have any of it hooked up. Mainly it's just there for hooking up a game system or something. For instance, I hooked up a friends Wii and set it on my stage, instead of messing with the wiring in my equipment rack. There's not a disadvantage unless you have hundreds of feet. These are only 25 feet long, so no issues.

Your space looks really great! I really like the wood and fabric in the theater, it's a different approach than most that I've seen, and it really sets the room off. How's the "kids' theater" working out? Have they managed to take over the main one yet?

Congratulations on the Electronic House article!

Thanks. I went this route because it was a bit different, and because I saw a couple other folks use mainly wood and fabric. It also meant I could drywall the room instead of paying someone to do it so it was smooth.;)

The kids theater works well. They always find a reason to bug the parents, but it's OK. It once took over 4 hrs to finish a 2hr movie. My daughter is very good about knowing which room is hers and which one is ours.

Been a while since I posted anything. Finally ordered my tile and started the bar and countertop a couple weeks ago. Finished it up on Sunday and wanted to upload some pics. I love how it turned out.

I had to special order this tile at Lowe's. I think it's called Midnight Black or something like that. It's actually granite tile and has copper looking sparkles in it.

I sized the bar top just right so the 12x12 pieces fit without any cuts.:)
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/DSC_0131.jpg

I used 1/8" spacers for a relatively thin grout line. My neighbor was building/finishing a bar at the same time and luckily I got the borrow the wet saw he bought to finish his bar.:D
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/DSC_0132.jpg

Here's the kitchen counter finished. I picked up the sink a while ago at HD. Nothing too special. Same with the faucet. It's a Price Pfister oil rubbed bronze faucet. Exciting!!! I wish I would of hung the counterop a couple inches over the cabinets, ut it saved me a ton of time. I just ripped a sheet of OSB down the middle and that gave 24" on the counter rand bar top. With the 12x12 tiles, here isn't much overhang. Oh well....
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/DSC_0159.jpg

Another angle of the counter. The raised are is there because of how the exterior wall was built. When I framed this I envisioned a ledge to set things on. We might put tile on the back wall or stone it and then put up wood shelves. Might even get a huge mirror and put shelves on that.... undecided right now.
http://i1098.photobucket.com/albums/g379/shookjer/DSC_0165.jpg

Here's a closeup of the tile. It and the grout are darker than they look.

If that's the same stuff as I bought for my kitchen last year from HD, you're in for a real treat! The stuff scratches really easily, and EVERYTHING shows on the black. You pretty much have to clean it and not let anyone touch it if you want it to remain nice looking. :)

Still when it is all clean and shined up, it sure does look good, doesn't it? I've actually been thinking about trying out an orbital buffer and see if I can easily remove the scratches. Seems like that would work and if you just did it once in awhile it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

But does look great when clean - just don't let anyone touch it.

You know, once I had it done and I proudly showed my wife the finished product, her exact words were, "It looks great! Where did all these scratches come from?"

I looked closer and sure enough there were scratches on numerous pieces. Somehow, the grout must of scratched it because most of the scratches were around grout lines. I have no idea how else they'd be there.....????? Too late to do anything about it now though. I don't get how granite can scratch that easily though.

Do you recall what kind of grout you used? If you used a sanded product, that's most likely what caused the scratches. I believe I used an unsanded grout on mine.

I am trying to decide if it was the Loganing process or the Canadian weenie HEFF that brought this thread to a halt.

I'm willing to blame it on the Canadian weenie and move on. VERY SWEET build. Logan should have never took that bet as you warned you were far too close to complete.

For those of you that haven't seen this thread you might want to page through. Very Sweet.

I see you are still out there Jerrod. How about some final pictures wall to wall. We don't need close up of grout lines rather the big picture on how it turned out.

Besides a couple behind the scenes items I need to clean up, the project is basically done. As requested, here are some final pics of the HT and the main game area of my basement.

A quick recap, designed and built all of this on my own. Got some room treatment advice from Bryan Pape along the way. I didn't do the drywall in the main area, or the carpet or tile, but did the rest. The HT was 2 layers of drywall all around, staggered stud walls, RSIC clips all around, Green Glue on the ceiling, OC insulation and scrim on the walls behind the fabric, stage and riser lights, etc...... What a long 2-3 years it's been.... Numerous thanks to everyone that helped along the way.

One from a while back, looking from the stage.

I finally, and I mean finally made the door for my equipment rack. Bought some perforated metal from McMaster-Carr and primed/painted it black. Had my neighbor help with the frame itself. He has a biscuit-saw and a bunch of other wood working tools I don't have.

Jerrod - great looking theater. I am in NC as well in Waxhaw, suburb of Charlotte.

I had a few questions about your lighting. You are one of the few who went with out cans and used just sconces. I am thinking about 7 sconces with 2 60w bulbs in each much like yours. Your room appears to be very bright. Any regrets on no cans? I assume that you dd/gg and did not want to disrupt your soundproofing. I thought of putting in track lighting for the front to light up the stage and screen but your small cans look nice. Did those effect your soundproofing? What cans are those?

Fabulous theater and very sophisticated attention to detail. Congrats on the article too.

On another note: Crikey you Americans have some H-U-G-E homes! I'm in Toronto and when my wife and I watch home shows from the USA, or for instance when "Super Nanny" visits a suburban American home we just can't believe the sheer size of everyone's house. It's like the average suburban middle class person owns a mansion compared to most houses in our experience.

No wonder home theater does so well in the U.S.A

Hard to say what I'm most proud of... Obviously, anyone that sees the basement for the first is drawn to the theater, 120" screen, etc... I'm really proud since I did it all by myself. The fabric and all of that....

That being said, I think all of the stained bead board, molding, chair rail, etc is pretty catchy too. I could have made it a plain Jane basement with painted white molding and still had the theater.... but it wouldn't have been near the same.

Thanks, you got it right on the cans. I used RSIC clips with hat channel, DD and GG and when I actually though about cutting 6 or so 6-7" holes in the ceiling, just didn't make sense. I can't remember if I have 60 or 75 watt bulbs....??? But with them turned all the way up i's plenty bright. Add to that the fact that I have dark carpet, stained wood and black around the stage and it's still a fairly bright room. The cans above the stage are in the soffitt.... so the ceiling is still above them. The lights are Emrald brand I got from Lowe's with 50 watt bulbs.

You can kinda see from this picture....

Beautiful, I hope mine comes out somewhere close.

Best advice I can give you is take your time and do it right the first time. Also, showing your wife pictures of your favorite HT's from AVS helps too! When I saw something I liked, something over the top or insanely expensive, I showed my wife. She would usually love it and either say do it or no way. If I didn't get the right answer, I'd just tone it down a bit.... compromise..... and usually get what I wanted.

Now, I admit all wives aren't created equal. I have to give her major props because I got the "You're F'in crazy" look from her more than once......:D

Wowsers!!! Everything looks great. I love the pool table, where'd you get it from. Congrats on a job well done.

Thanks man, got the table from Raleigh Pool and Spa here in Raleigh.... It's made by Legacy.

Very nice!

Btw - the beer sticker was a royal PITA to remove from the kegerator.... until I hit it with some stainless steel cleaner and plastic putty knife. :)

Thanks for the heads up on the sticker. I still can't figure out why so many companies don't realize the stickers they put on stuff don't come off very easily....????

Fabulous theater and very sophisticated attention to detail. Congrats on the article too.

On another note: Crikey you Americans have some H-U-G-E homes! I'm in Toronto and when my wife and I watch home shows from the USA, or for instance when "Super Nanny" visits a suburban American home we just can't believe the sheer size of everyone's house. It's like the average suburban middle class person owns a mansion compared to most houses in our experience.

No wonder home theater does so well in the U.S.A

More thanks.... I'm anal about details but certainly like the finished product.

As for the house, I bought it solely based on square footage. It was plain, nothing fancy, unfinished basement..... Knew that I could fix it up how I wanted over the years.

Wow, amazing. I've been browsing these build threads and I have to say yours is my favorite so far. I especially like the theater. It just looks so warm and inviting.

Great job!

Beautiful game room too!

Jerrod, what kind of sealer did you use on the bead board? It looks glossy. Does it reflect light from the screen when you are watching a movie?

Thanks.... I think the flash makes it look that way... I used Minwax Poly, Satin finish. I used gloss out in the rest of the basement, but not in the theater.

I'm no expert when it comes to drywall I did it for a short period of time when I was younger and my friends say my results are really good. What I found was mixing your mud is so much better I used fast set in the theater. In 45 minutes it was rock hard plus it seems to smooth out better. Just my 2 cents, I have to agree I hate drywall the dust etc, I wish I could have just had someone do it.

I left all of the finished areas to a pro.... I did the theater because it was all covered with wood and fabric.

Your area turned out just beautiful. The wood stain and color of the room makes for a wonderful match. Just looking at your bar area has kicked me in the arse to get my cabinet area started. Love the use of the black tile on the bar with the stain combo.

Wow.... 2 1/2 years since I posted anything in this thread. Well, I finally got around to making poster boxes for outside the theater. Here's a progress pic....

Here are some finished pics.... When I change out the posters, I might add a piece along the bottom to make the inside look a bit more polished.... With the 27x40 posters, there's a small gap on the bottom and top vs what I'll have with the 41 inchers. I have an idea what to do. Also, both posters are curling on the bottom. I didn't roll them backwards long enough, or leave them lay flat long enough to get the "memory" out of them..... was too excited to get them on the wall!!!

Double sided, look awesome! Pictures don't do it justice. I can't imagine single sided working that well. Even though I have 48 feet of rope light in each box, they aren't that bright. So single sided would be even worse.
