bsevenseven 10-26-05, 01:22 AM Anyone know anything about the xbox 360 dvd playback? I'm expecting shipment of my 56mx195 shortly, and I'm wondering if I'll need to upgrade my current DVD player - It's an old (regular) DVD player - or just use the xbox360 one. I know the 360 does not use HDMI, so obviously its probably not the optimal solution, but I'd rather not spend the dough if its got acceptable capability. Obviously noone can say for sure what the upscaling will look like on the 360 because they aren't out till Nov. 22... but an educated guess would be welcome!
Also, anyone know if the game mode is still available on this model? As a Halo2 player, I'm a little anxious about the "lag" I've heard about... Jittery even. Any info would be appreciated...
bruin95 10-26-05, 01:30 AM Well the delivery guys showed up today with the stand and the 72hm195.
I opened the stand box to check for damage and found everything was in great shape including the glass shelf. Then I opened the TV box and not a nick on the cabinet.
Jumpinjoe, what kind of box did the stand come in? Was it a long, flat box like most "assembly" furniture comes in? I have the stand for the 62hm195 coming and have to store it for awhile so I need to know how much room to clear out.
jumpinjoe 10-26-05, 10:16 AM Thanks for all the info/suggestions.
I have heard about the Xbox being capable but MSFT not allowing you to use the features. Interesting how the XBox looks better than my Sony DVD player even though neither are Progressive scan.
Not sure about 360 but it sucks that the Xbox will do progressive scan when playing a game but the feature is defeated when playing a DVD movie. Hope the get it right with the 360.
Bruin95- The box is a long flat box roughly 2' wide by 6' long and 5" thick. Be careful because the packaging is flawed whereas the two corners of the stand stick out a bit and would be the first thing to get damaged while shipping. As soon as you get the box and open it you'll see what I mean. Mine are fine.
The directions are good except for the first few steps. Just make sure you start assembling with the bottom piece and you have the rough part facing down :)
Even though it's not the best quality I don't think another stand would look nearly as good.
finsright 10-26-05, 02:10 PM Thank you everyone for all the info on these Toshiba 1080p tv's. And especially thank-you SurferDudeGreg for posting the link to the article about 1080p that explained that besides possibly some games, there won't be any 1080p media to input since according to the article's author, broadcast won't reach 1080p and blu-ray/HD dvd won't either. Given that I'm not a hard core gamer and don't plan to pump 1080p content out of a HTPC, I am no longer worried that 1080p inputs are really necessary (for me).
What I am left with from other feedback in this forum is that these 1080p tv’s makes hi-def look way better. (I know that is real technical summation of 18 pages of comments :) )
Still, what seems to be a significant improvement in HD PQ makes buying the 1080p over a 720p set worth it to me, except...
...I am now concerned about SD performance being really bad on these 1080p tv's (worse than on a 720p tv). We still watch a fair amount of SD stations (both analogue and digital non-HD). The article touched on this at the end and "seemed" to imply that SD channels would be far worse on a 1080p tv than on a 720p tv.
I understand that everyone has their own preference about what looks best to them, but most can agree on a "bad" picture.
So I'd appreciate any feedback about SD channels on the 62MX195. Please also indicate any difference between analogue and (non-HD) digital channels and please list what input is used to bring the SD channels into the tv.
Thanks in advance.

jumpinjoe 10-26-05, 02:27 PM Michael,
I do not have answers to all of your questions but I can tell you that 1080P looks incredible. At lunch I went to my local AV store and they had a new Mits 1080P high end model on display with built in hard drive.
The drive is shipped with 1080p content on it and it looks amazing to say the least. So when 1080p is available widescale at least I know I will be able to view it on the new Toshiba 72HM195 and not need to upgrade anyting.
As far as SD looks. As I stated above, it looks good but not great on my new set. But my old not HD Hitachi looks great with SD broadcasts. Everything is a trade off I guess. btw- I'm geting my HD and SD from digital HD cable. Plan to get an OTA antenna for my local HD.

I did a quick test on my 62MX195 through VGA via my PC and DOOM 3 it was awesome! I didn’t experience any lag what so ever.
BTW, I’ve never got into the game console thing so maybe this helped or not.

While have HDMI would be nice, if your not using an HTPC with your 56mx195 you will be happy to know that the 360 can hook up with your TV via a VGA cable which Microsoft so thoughtfully is going to manufacture for this little beauty. I think it is also safe to say that the 360's DVD playback will also exceed you regular non-progressive DVD player as the 360 will at least support progressive scan. Hope this helps.
jumpinjoe 10-26-05, 03:51 PM What is the MSRP on the 360? And how would I connect the 360 to my 72hm195?
benny32 10-26-05, 04:19 PM Stripped down version without harddrive for 299 and loaded version with harddrive and wireless controller for 399. I would check out gamespot.com for more info on pricing or for that matter any of the e-tailers that sell systems probably have pre-orders on their sites.

I just ordered my 62MX195 today. Thanks for the info. I am a very happy camper. :D
Question: Do you know if the resolution you are running from your PC to your TV is indeed 1920x1080?
Thanks

Provided DTVCity doesn't have them in stock ready for delivery you can cancel your order at DTVCity - but if they're in stock and in process of delivery your locked in. I had to cancel my SXRD with them as it was still shown as backorder after 2 weeks and they totally understood. :D

I was courting DTVCity when looking to buy my 52HMX95. They are located within a few hours of my home and quoted me super price. However I was a bit skeptical seeing they have no rating/reviews on Resellerratings.com. But what put the nail in the coffin for them was when I phoned OneCall and they beat DTVCity's price and also had a $99/month payment plan with no interest for the life of the loan. Not that DTVCity is a bad place to buy from, right the contrare. But at this particular time OneCall was obviously a bit better. If it weren't for OneCall, I would have been watching my DTVCity supplied Toshiba by now. :)
aaronwt 10-26-05, 11:47 PM So when is the SXRD going to finally show up Westa?
westa6969 10-27-05, 12:22 AM So when is the SXRD going to finally show up Westa?
Returned from FL vacation and DTVCity still had them on back-order so I cancelled and went with one in-stock from another vendor Tues Morning and should have it by early next week.
This time everything is paid at the point of shipping (which has occurred) for and no cancellations or ETA pushed back repeatedly like Crutchfield (3 times).
I must say the Toshiba was tempting though as I really like the 62"MX 1080P but I was fearful my wife and I may see rainbows and couldn't risk such an event. I must admit I saw the 62MX being sold by a legitimate Ebay Store at a very nice budget price so it was tempting.:D
I have had one ordered from VO Bellevue since October 6 and as of today they do not have an eta. They told me the larger sets ETA is this weekend.
:(
Chewyfang 10-27-05, 02:54 AM Regarding Lag concerns. I played MX unleashed (motorcross) in 1080i, and True Crime of LA in 720p, and then Halo2 in 480p on Xbox and 62mx195. I did not see any lag. xbox is hooked up via Microsoft HD adapter cables and moster component cables instead of the stock ones.
With Krisej's post confirming no lag on PC connect playing Doom 3 which is one of the most graphicly beefy games out there those worried about Lag on games should rest assured.
Regarding rainbow effects. I have seen them on all DLPs, I saw them a lot on the 1080p mits and samsung. I only noticed a brief moment of rainbow on the Toshiba at the store, but now at home everything tuned in for PQ and living room lighting, I havent noticed any rainbow effect. Im sure if you look for it constantly you'll find it, but I have been watching tons of stuff to break in and enjoy my new tv including Batman, Kingdom of heaven, sin city, unleashed, star wars, gladiator,, and shows in HD ERing, ER, Greys anatomy, Survivor, Amazing Race, Commander in chief, NFL football, Law and order, and in standard def nip tuck, and fastlane.
I was originally very concerned about rainbow effect since I noticed it alot in the store. But now I think that when you sit down to watch and enjoy, taking in the beautiful PQ of the TV you wont see any RE because your not looking for it, and its possible the difference in lighting distance and seating in your home environment effects your ability to notice it compared to standing in front of the set in the store.
BTW as mentioned somewhere in the last 18 pages of this thread, The Standard Def looks good, Im watching it through HDMI on set top box. But others have commented that there is additional processing to improve standard def on the coax ant input. I have seen some of the digital stations such as G4 and science channel looking so clean that I thought it was HD upconverted at first.
Mjack59_59@yahoo 10-27-05, 06:04 AM hello Westa6969, T.v. Had just arrived yesterday @ dtvcity already being processed, before I found one call.
Any body know where to buy an St-6295 cheaper than $350
Thanks
Mark
jumpinjoe 10-27-05, 11:19 AM I've spent many hours in front of the TV this week watching HD programs (sports, shows), DVD's and regular TV and have not noticed any rainbow effect on the 72hm195.
My only complaint is that the TV is out 3 feet from the wall so that the cable guy can install the CC tomorrow SO the set is maybe 13' from me and this is too close. It will be better after I move the set back and then the sectional back a couple additional feet. From the Kitchen or Dining room (33' and 45') the TV looks great!
Hi all,
I am new to the whole home theatre game and I just got a Toshiba 56HM195 (and plan on getting a Yamaha AV reciever and a Paradigm Cinema CT speakers). I have the television connected to analog cable through ANT1 and a cheap antenna to ANT2. TV Guide On Screen is working fine through the analog cable and I getting two HD stations through the antenna.
Changing channels with the built-in NTSC and ATSC tuners is slow. It takes around a second between selecting a new channel and for the new channel to display. Is this normal for the 56HM195 (and DLPs) or its there a problem with my unit?
Cheers.

Holy crap!!! Forty five feet from the TV!! Thats a ways out there. I have the 56" and I sit about 7-9 ft away and I don't think I'd want to go much further than 13 ft. Just goes to show that personal taste really makes huge difference in how we enjoy our home theaters. :)
jumpinjoe 10-27-05, 02:52 PM Benny,
My house is open concept so I can see from one end of the house to the other in certain rooms on the 1st floor. Standing close to the TV you can pick up on some of the flaws but the further you moved back the better the picture looks.
So from 45' away the set looks flawless but I won't be watching TV from the dining room anytime soon :) But watching it from the kitchen is definitely do-able. :)
I think the ideal distance for the 72" is 18-20 feet away.
gjstanfill 10-27-05, 04:47 PM I have had my 62HM195 for a bit over a week. Great picture, but the damned fan is driving me crazy.
The fan runs at "low" speed all the time, even after it has been "off" for hours. This is to support the TV Guide feature. It is clearly audible at 10 feet or more. I also measured the "off" power consumption, and it's a whopping 26 watts. That should add $36 - $38 per year to my electric bill, and, collectively, give lots more money to OPEC. In this day and age, for Toshiba to do this just seems plain STUPID.
But the major problem, and the reason I'm trying to get the dealer to take it back, is that the fan gets LOTS louder when the set is operating. Loud enough to jump right out during breaks in dialog, and even obscure soft speech. Seriously objectionable. If it were no louder during operation that when off, I would just be annoyed. But as it is, I'm a seriously unhappy camper.
I'm in my 60s, so my hearing is not so great these days, so if it bothers me, it is likely to bother lots of people.
If I can't get it returned (which is likely), I'll put in for a service call shortly.
The final "fun" issue is the stand. The dealer didn't have any in stock, so I ordered online. UPS smashed the first one. I reordered from another dealer, and UPS lost, then smashed the second one. The third one is on the way. By UPS, since I could not convince the robots at the dealer to send it by truck. Supposed to be here Monday, we'll see how I do this time.
If others are having the same problem, Toshiba is likely to run out of stands fairly quickly.
I hate to hear about your bad luck with the Toshiba and even more so with UPS smashing your TV stands. My stand came by FedEx today. I haven't opened the box yet but it looks unscathed. Funny thing too, the FedEx driver's truck was empty by lunch today when he delivered my Athenas speakers and my Bush stand. I opted for a steel and glass stand called the Platinum Mist from Walmart online. Cost me around $250 delivered for a stand that is ~ 58" wide. FedEx guy said he was looking for a good job. Wonder if they are having issues keeping customers? Truck empty, driver looking for a job, with UPS having too much work and smashing boxes.
bsevenseven 11-02-05, 04:33 PM Got my new 56mx195 on sunday. Couple observations...
First impression...Very dissapointed with standard broacast image quality. I believe this was mostly due to my false expectations. When the HD dvr was installed the subsequent day... The HD channels looked as great as one would expect. I have noticed however that some signals are just plain better than others. Some of the so called HD channels look "meh", while others like espn football games, look amazing.
I will also note, that there seems to be some confusion about HDMI vs. Component on the boards. I tried both, and let me just say that the HDMI was crisper and more vibrant than the Component. Pretty cool sidenote.. Comcast DVR records in HD and records the sound in dolby surround. Sweet.
The color looks pretty great out of the box. Skin seems fine to me, and it doesn't seem to have red push that I've heard about earlier Toshibas. Its actually quite cool ....To my eye anyhow.
Don't notice a lag when playing games. There may be the "slightest" amount, but I am extremely picky - ex: I won't use a cordless because I think there may be some sort of delay - I think there is some disorientation due to the screen being huge compared to my 36 in, which affects my gameplay a bit, but something to grow accustomed to. Also HALO2 while supporting widescreen, stretches the HUD and targeting reticle. Very dissapointing, but whatever, its Halo2 in widescreen!
The blue light issue... I don't notice it when I'm watching this huge rich and colorful television. Call me crazy. You can easily fix it however if you want by affixing a bit of black electrical tape over the light. The blue light actually helps me know when its on, because sometimes you'll hit the power on the cable remote and it helps to make sure the tv is off - as the screen looks black when you've got no signal, and is actually on.
The stand looks pretty good, but is particle board, and painted greyish silver. Cheap-o. But looks okay, sort of like IKEA furniture.
Plugged in the incredibles on my old toshiba non-progressive scan dvd. What can I say.. I was dissapointed. Jaggies everywhere. I immediately delved into the boards, and ordered a new Oppo DVD player. Expecting good things when it arrives!
XBOX looks moderately better via component vs Svideo. Halo doesn't look as good as I had hoped but hey, its only 480p. Can't wait for 360!
HDMI cables are friggen expensive! Monster HDMI cables run 120 bucks. I'll be looking online for a cheaper sollution for my Oppo.
Fan noise. Yeah, its kinda wierd having a fan running versus a quiet CRT, but I live in San Francisco, and theres ambient noise in my place so I don't notice it. It does go off after a few minutes after the television is shut down - leaving a smaller fan running at all times which is pretty quiet - I wouldn't say the main fan isn't much louder than my xbox though. All in all, I think its kind of like the refigerator running, you just get used to it as background noise.
All in all.. very happy owner!
wordgasm 11-02-05, 05:07 PM Got my new 56mx195 on sunday. Couple observations...
Got the same last Thursday, but not alot of time with it yet.
First impression...Very dissapointed with standard broacast image quality.
I cant watch analog SDTV on this set, it terrible, digital (HD channels) with SD broadcast is watchable. Charter Motorola HD-DVR
Don't notice a lag when playing games.
Haven't hooked up my X-Box yet, just waiting for the 360
The blue light issue... Not a big deal I can live with it.

Using a HTPC with NVidia 6600GT over DVI/HDMI, TheaterTek and FFDShow, all I can say is ... it's incredible!

bsevenseven 11-02-05, 06:00 PM Quick update. Just got my OPPO player in the mail. Ordered it yesterday at around 3. Since its in Mountain View California, I figured maybe two days... I was quite surprised! Anyway. Put a DVD in, Incredibles on my old DVD for reference. Then hooked up the OPPO with the included dvi-hdmi cable. What a difference! The menu now has clean type, and no jaggies on the characters. Almost as big a difference as standard to High def. Highly Recommended to round out your HD experience. An easy sell for 199. Well worth it.

Excellent! The Progressive Scan DVD made a big improvement for me as well. :D
bsevenseven congrats on your Oppo :)
I also have one and a panny S77 have not done a side by side comparsion.
By the way if your unit does not have the latest firmware you can download it create a iso disc and update the player.
You can check your player by doing this.
• Eject the tray
• Press the "OSD" button on the remote control
• A menu will pop up to show the firmware version of the OPPO player. If you don't see the firmware version, this means that you have an older firmware version installed.
Having a dvd player that has a 3:2 pull down feature in the progressive scan mode is a plus. Makes the picture much smoother no jagged lines.
Then upconverting to 1080i cannot hurt either. :)
I'm glad to hear you like the Oppo. However I opted for the Panasonic S97. It cost a bit more than the Oppo and doesn't have as many folks raving about it but I couldn't bring myself to buy the Oppo. My Panasonic should be here by the end of the week, supposedly tomorrow. Maybe I'll get the opportunity to make use of it this weekend.
bsevenseven congrats on your Oppo :)

I'd love to know what you think if you ever get the time to do a side-by-side of the Oppo and the S97. Truthfully I'm looking for some justification for spending the extra $$ on the Panasonic knowing the Oppo had better reviews and even cost less.
bsevenseven 11-02-05, 07:02 PM Thanks Yaamon :)
After pushing OSD I get a number.. OP971-D-1022
Is this the most recent firmware? What doI activate the 3:2 pulldown feature in the progressive scan mode, or is that already enabled?
I've got it upconverting to 1080i through the dvi option. Looks great!
BTW rbbnet, I struggled with the same question. Obviously I picked the Oppo but the S97 has gotten great reviews as well. All I can say, is that the Oppo comes with a free DVI- HDMI cable. That, and the fact that you'll save 50 bucks over the panasonic. I was worried about a "no-name" company at first, but felt assured after reading the boards.
The reason that the Oppo is cheaper has less to do with build quality, and more to do with the fact that they don't advertise, and don't need to pay their distributors ie: Circuit City, a chunk of money. Thats just my 2 cents.. again, struggled with the same exact conundrum.
My choice just came down to a monetary one, on two comparable players. If I wanted a potentially better machine I would have had to spend another couple hundred on the Sony. And IMO, with HD-DVD/Blueray looming, that might be a waste of money. Much like my MoFo $120 HDMI Cable. Damn you Monster!
Either way you go, you'll have a nice DVD player! I get all worked up about this sh!t too!
Thanks Yaamon :)

If I'm not mistaken the S97 comes with a HDMI to HDMI cable so we can't take into consideration the cable cost. But it would be nice to have the DVI to HDMI so I could play with a PC hooked to the TV. I agree with your thoughts on Oppo's pricing. I hate the middle man and attempt to skip/screw 'em everytime I can.
I went to Walmart last weekend and bought an elcheapo Cyberhome DVD player that upconverts and had a HDMI-HDMI in the box. It is what we're using until the Panny comes in. $80 for the cable alone, I'll hand the cheap DVD player down to one of the kids next week.
BTW, I'm not made of $$.. I had two DVD players, a surround stereo system, car audio equipment, etc, stolen a month or two ago. All of it totally in excess of $5000.00. I spending insurance $$. Gotta love that. :)

I'm leaning toward getting this TV with the matching stand. Has anyone bought this stand yet? Is it really painted particle board? My only local dealer that carries this TV does not have this stand on display. Should I look for BDI or Bello stand instead? They are more expensive but looks excellent.
I bought a steel and glass stand that is pewter gray/charcoal and chrome with glass shelves from Walmart.com. The stand is made by Bush Platinum Mist and weighs in at nearly 100#. It is ~ 58" wide and 17" deep and is designed yo hold up to 150# on the top shelf. It looks like it was made for my 52" TV as the TV is less than 1" narrower than the stand. Not enuff difference to hardly even tell there is one. Most everybody has claimed the Toshiba matching stands are cheaply built hence the reason I strayed away.

It's not "painted" article board, more like "covered" particle board. It really doesn't look bad though... once you get the stand in one piece that is.
Take a look at my post about my stand issues HERE (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6464256&&#post6464256)
bsevenseven 11-03-05, 12:16 AM Yeah, Its covered "somehow" with a substrate of some sort that is a matte silver/grey - on the front part. This is a nice looking stand for the TV. It is particle board, but really, not obvious unless you put it together or examine very closely. IMO, this is THE best looking option for this TV. It looks as if it is an extension of the lines of the television set. So, its made of a fairly cheap material.. oh well.
bruin95 11-03-05, 02:40 AM Quick update. Just got my OPPO player in the mail. Ordered it yesterday at around 3. Since its in Mountain View California, I figured maybe two days... I was quite surprised!
Glad to hear you got yours. I ordered mine over a week ago and paid extra for "priority" shipping. I'm still waiting for it. Getting a little worried that I'll even receive it at all.
Johnny Canuck1 11-03-05, 04:31 AM If anyone has a chance to try the new Toshiba 1080P dlp's with the new DVDO iScan VP30 I'd be curious as to your impressions...
http://www.dvdo.com/pro/pro_isvp30.php
I am also wondering if the 1080P output of the new DVDO iScan VP30 might make the quality of the HTPC connection possible at 1920 X 1080P (on the PC output side)...
Paul Nuyens 11-03-05, 08:57 AM I just got my 62mx195 with the matching stand last Saturday. My wife loves the stand and it does look great but it is particle board and because it tapers back to match the profile of the tv IMO it doesn't do a very good job of handling all the additional electronic "stuff". It comes with two glass shelves but the only way I could get my stuff to fit was to only use one of the shelves and then stack the rest of the "stuff". I bought it from ABC Warehouse, the TV was $2,799 & the stand was $399, including delivery. Bought it Friday night and it was here Saturday by 10:00am.
I have Bright House cable and the picture looks great. My DVD player is an older Toshiba model but it does have progressive scan and the picture looks great. I find the little blue light a little annoying but I'm sure I'll get used to it. As I had read earlier the fan runs 24/7 and there is a slight hum when the tv is off but you have to be pretty close to it to hear it. Also, when the tv is on the additional cooling fan that comes on adds a little more hum and it can be noticed during very quiet moments during regular viewing. I tried to measure it with my SLM but it isn't loud enough so I guess it shouldn't bother me.
I found the same experience as others in purchasing cables, man, they're expensive, expecially the HDMI/DVI. 3' for $100.00 at BB. I'll check Radio Shack next time.
wordgasm 11-03-05, 09:01 AM Has anyone used their new 1080P with a cablecard (and a toshiba hard disk recorder ) yet?
Thinking about trying it as opposed to my cable hd-dvr.
If so, hows the guide interface and recording options?
Thanks
Jeff

I've built a custom cabinet for my 62MX195 just enough width and depth to fit the TV and the only opening from the back is for the cable connections. I wonder if this will present a ventilation or excessive heat problem later on. Right now, after a while of watching, I don't feel that much heat around the cabinet. The manual said toplace in well ventilated area. Anyone has the same setup, or thoughts?
Here's a link to cheap HDMI cables.

Paul Nuyens 11-03-05, 04:19 PM I just checked out the site and their prices are unbelievable. Does anyone know what, if anything, you would be giving up, other than the $$$, by using these cables?
vfr781rider 11-03-05, 08:00 PM OK... I've just purchased a 62MX195, sight unseen. I know, I'm crazy :( Or not :) I'm wondering what folks who have actually seen a MX195 series think about it in comparison to the Sony KDS-R60XBR1. I'm upgrading from a 4 year old Toshiba with only component inputs, so I hope I'm tickled regardless. We do have a local dealer with a 56 inch MX195 and I'm going to go by tomorrow to check it out. Not that I can do anything about it now...
You should be very happy with it so long as you have a quality input. I'm also glad you had mistyped the model number as I was really getting concerned you may have purchased something that didn't exist.
bsevenseven 11-03-05, 08:26 PM I bought the 56mx195. The picture certainly looks better than it did in the store, and in my opinion nicer than the 720 sets. I can't say for sure how i compares to that particular Sony, although I know Sony has impressive yet expensive sets. In my search, I compared it mostly to 720p samsungs and jvcs. I found that the 1080p doesn't make a huge difference, but it seems brighter (than the sammy), and the blacks seem blacker (than both samsung and jvc) with much better contrast than both. It also has 2 hdmi inputs and hopefully has a shot at 1080p input, although I am doubtful of that possibility. Even so, a 1080i downscaled image from 1080p will look better than a 1080p downscaled to a 720p image IMO. I have no doubt that a hd-dvd will look better on a 1080p television, 1080p input or no.
Still I have noticed that it sometimes doesn't handle gradients all that well. Very very subtle color variation sometimess looks posterized. Not sure if this is the media(1080i HD) or the set, but not a deal breaker. I am not sure if this is a common DLP complaint. Its extremely subtle.
My 2 cents is that if you're buying a Toshiba, you'll get a very nice quality (ie: not the best) television - for less money. I would put my 56mx150 up against a samsung 1080p any day... and still have some money left in my wallet. Frankly, I think its a steal.
garysci 11-03-05, 10:08 PM Hi. I've been lurking for a while. Thank you all for your postings! I've had my
56Hm195 for about two weeks (from Fry's), so I thought I'd drop in a report.
Overall, its been pretty great - I was using a Phillips 27" EDTV for a while to evaluate Cox HD, the DVR, etc., so it's rather stunning when everything's working right.
Issues:
1. Power-off fan noise is clearly audible; Power-on fan (color wheel?) noise is very loud, so I'll be hitting up Toshiba service pretty soon. Has anyone had a successful outcome on getting this resolved?
2. The set showed up missing a couple of screws holding one of the speaker grills on. Fry's came by with replacements a few days later.
3. Just got a DVI-to-HDMI cable going between my SA8000HD STB and notice quite visible noise in the black areas. This looks like random white pixels lasting one frame. The same content via component input looks great. I think someone mentioned this on this forum; I was wondering if anyone else has seen this and gotten satisfaction from Toshiba? Could be a STB issue...
4. When powering up, the TV seems to not want to display correctly - it looks like it is in the wrong resolution. Selecting a different input, then going back clears up the problem. This on component input.
5. While watching an old and very noisy VHS tape, closed captioning started up on its own. The settings said it was off - I had to switch it to one of the CC modes to get it to stop. Very strange...
6. Re/audio lag. There's lag when I use the RCA audio output jacks to drive wireless headphones (seems like about two frames worth); otherwise no problems with any sources.
7. PS2 via component input looks great! I had no idea it would be this good. I bought Grand Tourismo 4 and it looks very good at 1080i.
8. I did get to try out the 72HM195 at Fry's with the AVHD unit Mitsubisi is using to demo 1030p. The drive shows up fine in the TheaterNet menu and looked good. I did notice considerable blurring (standing very close) with moving objects. I don't know whether this is motion blur in the source or an interlacing artifact - I suspect the latter.
9. I'm wondering if anyone has had a chance to use 1394 out to record to a D-VHS or AVHD with these sets? My goal is to try to archieve a couple of items from the STB onto D-VHS via the Tosiba's 1394 port, but I'm wondering if all sources are encoded to digital out. I would think that, if Toshiba is positioning their AVHD as something useful, they'd be encoding anything you can watch.
Thanks again!
Gary

Radio shack had a sale going 50% and 75$ off of some hdmi/dvi 6ft, and hdmi hdmi cables. the 100$ cable was 50$ and the 50 cable was 12.50. They were selling out quickly I called 6 different RS stores and they all had the cables on clearance.
Then I went to Walmart and got a 6 ft Phillps DVI/HDMi cable for 43.00. Walmart has some good deals on cables.

I posted this on the the MX195 owners thread the other day.
Just saw the 50 and 60 Sony sxrd. Its somewhat hyped to say its the best picture ever and blows everything away. Yes its bright, clean and colorful, but its very subtle and I bet if you did a blind AB test where you could only see the picture and not the set itself, you would be hard pressed to see the diference. I would buy the 60 sxrd over the toshiba only if I had the money and didnt care about the 1000 price difference. for me its either the 50 sxrd or the 62 mx195 for the same price, so Ill stay with the toshiba.
Its also that I bought from Video Only which only allows for exchanges, and only 1 year no interest. If I could start over CC and BB are offering 26 months no interest, I could probably afford the 1000 difference then, but still might not bring myself to pay so much more for not much more. I guess we Toshiba owners must rest assured that we got the most bang for the buck, plus as I think about it Im sure I would rather spend the 1000 dollar difference on other toys such as xbox 350 and ps3, then to just have the ever so slightly fancier sony tv.
LordCrom 11-04-05, 04:40 AM Just purchased a 72HM95 from Best Buy!
I actually have to wait for it to arrive on Nov. 22nd. Same day as the XBOX360 is coming out. Let's just say that Nov. 22nd 2005 is Christmas day for me this year!
This is my first step into the HD world. My current T.V. is a 35 inch Mitsubishi tube. Being a newbie as I am, I have many questions. I hope that everyone will bare with me as I bring them up over the course of my time coming to this site. I would like to thank everyone in advance who will be helping me along the way.
So my first question is. Have I made a solid choice in my first HD purchase? Could I have done better or worse? My first and foremost option that I was looking for when lookin for an HDTV was size. I wanted the largest HDTV that I could find. I am fairly sure I found it with this set. I believe my next stage after this would have been to go projection?
The two biggest reasons for my purchase into the world of HD was for the XBOX360 and DVD's. Have I made a wise investment when it comes to these two selections? Could I have done better for the size? No interest in have gone any smaller than possibly a 60inch.
HDTV was a third reason to pick up HDTV and a lesser reason than to my first two reasons. I currently have digital cable with time warner cable. Now, is there anything I should know right now about wheather I will even be able to watch t.v. first day out of the box with this t.v. and my digital cable box? Also, if I want to get HDTV through my cable, what do I need to start doing now?
When it comes to HD DVD quality my current DVD player is a Samsung combo DVD/VCR player bought in July. I do not have the exact model number with me at the moment. I will get it soon. Will this work at all? If so, will I need to buy anything before it will work (Cables, Etc.)? Should I really be just going with something else? Anything that is a DVD/VCR combo hopefully.
Now for the XBOX360. I am getting the top model. Will this come straight out of the box and run on this t.v.? Is there anything else that I will be required to buy first? Would there have been a better purchase for this without having gone under 60inches?
I am sure there are more questions I did not ask yet. As you can tell I am a total newb and hope that you will bare with me. Thank you again - Clay

Why don't you buy an HDMI cable from RAM electronics. a forum sponsor
You will also get an AVS discount. They are high quality cables and also cheaper than what you listed. Just go the the PowerBuys and Special Items section and go to the thread titled "Ram Electronics offers AVS members a PowerBuy on quality HT connection solutions". It will have a link to the page that shows the pricing for AVS forum members.

vfr781rider 11-04-05, 07:09 PM OK, so my MX195 is going to be here Tuesday and I'm now learning the ways of DLP :) It would seem having a spare lamp would be adviseable unless you want to be without your primary display device for some number of days. The only place I've found so far for the MX replacement bulb is here http://www.ercservice.com/lamps/toshibalamps/23311153.html and it's friggin' $376!!! I've never hear of any bulb of any kind costing that kind of money. What do you guys and gals do? Is there a cheaper place to find them. Please say yes...

I think this is a 6000 hour bulb (at low power), so you might want to wait two or three years :) . The prices will probably come down if this is a new bulb type and a lot start being used in TVs over that time...

I believe that the Toshiba website has them for $199 but they may be backordered. Search the:The Toshiba DLP (HM/HMX) Owners Thread Post #3574 for more info.

bsevenseven 11-05-05, 10:59 AM I've now had my 56mx195 for a week now, and I'm enjoying it. I have noticed on 2 dvds... Batman Begins and Star Wars III that the black screens at the end or beginning, have a ton of grey noise, and for some reason, artifacts of where the logo or text was after it fades out. It looks pretty bad. Sort of like the black is being made up of uneven gray pixels all over the place. When the imagery starts it looks fine, but the flat black looks awful. I did also notice this happening in certain scenes of Batman Begins, like when he revisits the bat cave as an adult. FYI, I'm using an Oppo player. Anyone have a similiar experience?
vfr781rider 11-05-05, 12:41 PM What is the URL to the Toshiba web site where you can purchase spare lamps? They certainly don't make it easy to find.
magredc5 11-05-05, 11:47 PM This is the site for lamps, but they don't have the ones for the 1080p sets yet listed:
http://ceaccessories.toshiba.com/searchresults.asp?search_id=5
bsevenseven,
I've watched both of those on my 72mx195 through a Tosh 6980 and have not seen what you are seeing. I was particularly looking for shadow detail or noise in dark areas.
bsevenseven 11-06-05, 12:28 PM Follow up. The reason for the artifacts and noise, was that I had my brightness turned up a bit too much. I used the THX optimizer, to get the most variation out of my low range blacks, and it really made pitch black ugly. I think that would be the biggest problem that I have with the dlp, is the way it handles very close gradients, and how it handles shades of very very dark grey/ black. But, thats being a nitpicker probably. For the money, the set rocks!
I just checked out the site and their prices are unbelievable. Does anyone know what, if anything, you would be giving up, other than the $$$, by using these cables?
If you're saying the quality of the audio video signal, I don't notice any difference and I have used Monster cables before and their overrated.
I think tha the HDMI I purchased with them is better quality than the one that came with the TV. I'm going with Optical link with all my components that uses them, so.

mannyqg 11-07-05, 12:30 PM Hi,
I am planning to buy either the 72HM195 or the 72MX195. I emailed Toshiba customer service and ask if these models accept native or compressed 1080p thru HDMI/VGA input at 24/30/60 fps. The reply was both of them do. I don't know if this question has been answered before but I would like to know anything contrary to the answer I got. Also I will be using my HTPC for DVD playback, has anybody tried to connect the PC to the 72HM195 thru the HDMI input and produce good results (what video card works) ? I was about to order the 65inch HP but the 72inch size is too tempting not to consider it. Thanks for any thoughts on these.

Don't know if you'll have the same results but I ordered my 72HM195, Stand and Monster protector from Digital1234.com and had excellent results. They offered a great shipping rate which included insurance on the TV AND the stand/monster had free shipping.
A couple of days after receiving my order I went back and purchased a new Toshiba DVD player (free shipping and HDMI cable included) and they sent it via fed ex.
If you know what you want they are good to deal with. They only communicate via email and they send you all of the shipping info which you can track by the freight company (Seko) or by Fed Ex for the smaller items.
Before ordering I made sure Toshiba would honor the warranty and then I sent them an email asking if all the items I was ordering were in stock.
I will not post the prices but they were the lowest I could find anywhere.
If you order from them I hope you have the same results as I did.

I doubt you can get 1080p because I hear only the HP can do this via hdmi. I'd like to see someone here try it. Bring your PC down to you local AV store and give it a try :)

Those connections are for digital harddrive recorders like the Sybio for Toshiba and DVHS players/recorders. Both of those types of players/recorders use a completely digital stream and use the IEEE 1394 connection for the an interface. There may be other uses but these are the only two I know of.

This is probably one of the most debated subjects in this thread. Maybe debated isn't the right word, questioned is probably closer. The bottom line is nobody has posted a successfull attempt at 1080p over any of the inputs reguardless of what Toshiba has told a number us. We all keep hoping it's going to happen but no one has got it to work yet. I'm begging to be proven wrong though.

Let's just say you better not ask for a happy ending from your wife / girlfriend / or significant other that day or God/Karma might strike you dead the next morning hehe!
If I were to buy online I'd make sure that they were an authorized retailer. With those discounts I'm assuming the MSRP will drop really soon. I bought a Toshiba 62HM84 last year at the end of September and the price dropped at the beginning of November. Still can't believe the prices on these. The casing on the HMX models is awesome. I ordered the SXRD but the 72" version for several hundred less is tempting.
Lordcrom,
I hope you pre-ordered that Xbox360. If you didn't don't get your hopes up too much. I pre-ordered from EB Games back on 5/20 and I'm on the 2nd shipment list. They were guaranteed 30 but only got 26, and of course I'm 28th on the list. Other stores may not be getting loads of them either. I'll still get mine on launch day because ToysRUs just started their pre-orders(with bundles of course) Sunday and they are only getting in 8 units. Anyway, the premium bundle comes with HD component cables so you'll be all set.
vfr781rider 11-08-05, 07:42 PM Let me just say that I got my 62MX195 today and it's Friggin' wonderful. With an HD source, I feel like I'm truly in the 21st century :) And I came from a 2002 CRT... No rainbows. No MBs. No noticeable fan noise unless I turn down the volume and everything else in the den. You guys and gals are just too high strung :) No problem!

jumpinjoe,
Thanks for the info. I will check that site out and see what is happening.
This might have been asked before but can anyone tell me the difference between 62MX195 and 62HM195. There seems to be a $1000 difference when you look at the two through pricegrabber or nextag.

There is only a $300.00 difference in the MSRP. The MX's are in the top of the line "Cinema Series" and some stores (Costco) don't carry that line and there is less competition to drive the price down. The MX's have a VGA computer input and an LAN computer port and some software called "THINC" that allows you to obtain picture files (MPG's) and sound files(WAV's) from the computer attached to the LAN port using your TV's Remote. Using the VGA port and the computers mouse and keyboard you can play DVD's on your TV. You can also build slide shows with music and play them on your big screen TV provided your computer has the software to do it such as iPhoto & iMusic or the PC equivelants. Well worth the $300.00 to me. I think (Hope) that soon the MX's will come down more in price. I plan to get a 72MX195.
m4carbine 11-09-05, 11:01 PM I am a newbie to the forum and somewhat of a novice at HDTVs. I am considering moving up from my old 53" Sony 4X3 aspect ratio to the Toshiba 62MX195. Reading through these 20+ pages has been very informative.
I have on order DirecTVs HD-DVR (got a GREAT deal on the unit and several free months of HD programming when I threatened to leave them for comcast or dishnet). My A/V reciever is a Yamaha RV-X1300 6.1 and I have Klipsch Reference series speakers along with their 12" sub.
I'm pretty much sold on this particular monitor and can get it locally here in South Florida for $3,365 including sales tax. Is this a decent price?
A big concern I have is space issues. We may be moving to a larger place next year but for now I am stuck and want to get as large a TV as possible since I will not be able to do another major TV upgrade for several years.
My existing TV room is pretty narrow with primary seating at roughly 12 feet from the tv and additional seating about 4-5 feet further back on taller "bar stool" chairs with a high table where we often have dinner while watching TV.
This area is VERY narrowly restricted for space and the 62MX195 will go in my entertainment center and just BARELY makes it with 1 1/2 inches to spare (assuming the width dimensions are accurate). This is with the entertainment center opened to maximum (yeah, I could always dump the entertainment center but wifey likes it and won't let it go). I do need to get the ST6295 stand as the tv will go in the center of my entertainment center -the kind with two "pillars" on each side. Does anyone have the EXACT width measurement of the ST6295 ? It absolutely MUST NOT exceed 57 1/2" ! !
I just measured mine and it is 57" exactly. However if you want to use the side "smart card" input you may have a problem. Although you could probably just slide the set out when you want to use that input.

Or he could go for a DVD player with a smart card reader :) I went this route even though I have access to the DLP's reader. When comparing pictures on the two I have to say the DLP does a better job handling photo's.
There was no difference in price for the upscaling Toshiba DVD with card reader so I figured it would not hurt to have it.

I have a great Sony P200, 7.2 Megapixals camera that takes breathtakingly sharp photos. I burned some to CD and let my Samsung HD850 send them via HDMI to the 56HM195. What a disappointment. You would have thought I was using a disposable camera.
The next test was to use the Toshiba's card reader. A very small improvement, but an operation not to be repeated. Not only was each picture very fuzzy, but the loading performance was on par with my first computer, a Tandy 286.

Have you tried connecting the camera directly to the TV for comparison? I seem to recall my old Hitachi doing a great job at displaying pictures when the camera was connected.

This E-tailer has a very low price on the 62HM195:
http://bigbangelectronics.com/product.asp?dept_id=5&pf_id=62hm195-toshiba/dlp/1080p
Price includes shipping. The 62MX195 info is here:
http://bigbangelectronics.com/descriptions/62mx195.htm
This site has a lot of info on the MX set including:
Dimensions: 57.06" W x 39.25" H x 18.75" D
Weight: 105 lbs.
Unfortunatly they only sell the "Cinema Series" MX in certain locations:
"Toshiba is now offering the Cinema Series line of big screen TV's. These TV's offer an amazingly crisp picture quality at decent prices. Big Bang Electronics does carry the Toshiba Cinema Series. Sales are restricted to certain locations. Please call for availability and shipping information. 1-888-314-2620"
Their price difference is less than $900.00 and the MX price includes a free stand that is at least $300.00. Both prices include shipping.

There are lot of other places cheaper than their price. I can see atleast couple of sites cheaper by more than 250$.
I bought the 62mx195 for $2,799 + 35.00 delivery at a local retailor. Bought on Friday night & it was delivered the following Saturday morning; less than 24 hours after purchasing.
Is it possible to use the Toshiba On Screen guide when using a cable box? Is there any reason to use it in place of the cable box guide? According to page 43 of the manual it is but I haven't been able to get it to work. I called Toshiba and they weren't any help. I'm using a DVI/HDMI cable.
I have the 62mx195.

Definitely. Go into TVGOS and go to the set up screen. It will ask you if you use cable and what brand of STB you are using.

I picked up my 62MX195 from http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/457999310. Unfortunately, they now list it at retail. When I bought it a week ago, it was a couple hunrdred less and they had a bundle with the matching stand. All told, it was ~$4200 shipped.
PFn2 did you get it at ABC warehouse?
jumpinjoe 11-11-05, 09:30 AM After having zero problems with the TV for the past few weeks I encountered my first glitch but it was not the TV but rather the CC.
I turned the TV on and could only access 8 channels and they were random. I'd try to go to 25 and it would not let me and the same was true for the other 95 channels.
I went to another room which has a STB and regular digital cable and all the channels worked so I knew it was not a feed problem. So I re-set the TVGOS and still nothing.
Next step was to eject the CC and then insert it again. Bingo! This fixed the problem and all channels work.
So before you schedule a visit with the Tech and sit around for 2 hours while he scratches himself you may want to try ejecting the card :)
bruin95 11-12-05, 02:55 AM I've had my 62HM195 for a couple of weeks now and finally got around to hooking up my Xbox to this TV. All I can say is, "What the hell happened"? The picture is absolutely awful!! It looks like really bad streaming video. So bad, the game's are really unplayable. I have the HD pack hooked up to the component inputs and the TV doesn't even display the game in widescreen. I have to use the TV's "full" setting to get it to almost fill the screen, which makes the picture look even worse. The Xbox is set to widescreen mode, with all resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080i) selected, but the games, even if it's a 720p game, are all in 4x3 format and look awful. I tried deselecting the resolutions, one by one, with no luck. The images flicker very badly and lines, like the yard lines in Madden, suffer from a severe case of the jaggies. It seems like the Toshiba is having trouble "deciding" what resolution to display. The picture will constantly blank out every few seconds while on the main Xbox screen. I tried both component inputs with the same results. The Xbox looked fantastic on my old HDTV with all games being displayed in widescreen with little to no picture quality issues. I'm really disappointed with this. What picture settings should I have the TV set to? I know the Xbox360 is just around the corner, but I don't have the cash for that right now and would like to use the current Xbox for at least another year. Doesn't look like that's going to happen, though.
jumpinjoe 11-12-05, 08:37 AM Have you tried connecting it without using the HD pack? I have mine connected with the standard connection and it works great. PGR2, Halo2, NHL work without jaggies or lag.
I'd say it's your connection or you have something wrong with your TV.
Good luck.

It looks just as bad and, of course, using a standard connection defeats the purpose of having games played in 720p widescreen. I have D* hooked up to the component inputs, also, and have no picture problems with that. I'm guessing that either the HD pack cables for the Xbox went bad or the XBox itself is starting to go bad. Oh well, looks like I'll have to save my pennies and buy an Xbox360 sooner than I would have liked. :(
Looking for larger RPTV to replace my aging Sony KP-61HS10. These two seem to be the principal choices. What are your thoughts on the comparison?
Also, I am a tad confused about what 1080p means. These are both 1080p sets, but I am reading that neither can accept 1080p input. If a TV does not accept 1080p input, what is the significance of 1080p with respect to that set? What do I get if I try to play a WMV 1080p file, such as T2? Do I not get full resolution? If not, than the only way to view 1080p at full resolution is to play it on your compuer monitor? Could someone kindly clear this up for me?
I spent most of today at a B&M marveling a 56HM195. However, two things struck me. First, I didn't see an adustment that would allow me to indivdually set RGB - only a single color adjustment. Is this an oversight on my part? Second, I was watching Finding Nemo and it was jaw popping. However, it seemed images in the foreground kind of "stuck out" a bit to much, as if the contrast were up to high. Has anyone noticed this and can the contrast (or whatever it was I saw) be toned down a bit to make the picture appear more fluid.
Also, what's the warranty on this TV. The sales rep gave me a blank look when I asked him and then finally blurted "12 months parts, six months labor or something like that." Is this right?
Many thanks in advance.

StereoLarry 11-14-05, 11:10 AM After a very long search that started out with projectors I've finally made my decision on the 72MX195. Thanks to everyone at this forum, making my decision became real easy. I've been reading the threads for at least the past two months and I feel I made the right choice. Your discussions taught me quite a bit.
I first started looking at the 6768W Sammy and then the 73727 Mits. Eventually I saw the 72MX and felt it was easily as good as the Mits and the Sammy. All three were in the same store. I was pretty sure I would get the HM model and save the money since I wasn't a true gamer. My kids are.
I took the plunge last Wednesday and went on-line. I chose 6th Ave. Electronics. None of the reviews are good at any of the web sites and I was very nervous about it. But I got my confirmation stuff and it looked like I would be O.K. Then the infamous sales rep call came the following day trying to push #$@%. Of course the site said it was "in stock" and of course it wasn't! So he talked me into taking the MX along with a 4 year bulb warranty. All along I wanted an excuse to get the MX. So I went for it.
Shipment is due here in Vegas on Wednesday (legs shaking!). I've been expanding the built in entertainment center of my house to accomadate the new T.V. It was originally built for a 4:3 large screen. House was built in 98' and I bought it two years ago. That was a job! Looks real good. The boss thinks so too.
Oh-Seating will be 15 feet away. Large room that also has a breakfast bar behind the main couch. Seating about 19 feet away.

strick8 11-14-05, 04:10 PM Hi,
New owner of a 62HM195. I’m still waiting for it to be shipped from Crutchfield. I noticed in the manual it says “Never connect this TV to a PC. This TV is not intended for use with a PC.” With that said has anyone try connection it to a PC using a DVI to HDMI cable. I have WinFast6600 GT with DVI output and would think this connection should be no problem at all. Thanks for any info on this in advance

Can I view two HDMI sources side by side?
What is the hightest resolution someone has gotten from a PC?
When I viewed the 56HM195 at Sears it seemed that it had more SSE then the other tvs around. Does any one else notice this?
How are the rainbows on this set compared to others?
Is there a way to access the service menu so I can hire ISF calibrater and have it properly calibrated?

POP will allow 2 sources, but not from the same type, i.e. if you're main input is HMDI1, your second window can't be from HMDI2. Same for Antenna inputs. I've used it with ANT1 (my CableCard/Cable input) and VIDEO1 (my VCR).
I have noticed SSE on very white scenes, but it's not that bad. And I don't see any Rainbow Effect. The SSE at Sears could be due to running the bulb in Hi mode and cranking the brightness up as well.
StereoLarry 11-14-05, 06:49 PM I've read several messages regarding wether or not the mx models will take 1080p through HDMI. Toshiba claims that it will etc. I'm wondering if the question shouldn't be posed differently. Shouldn't it be asked wether it will take 1080p through HDMI and display the same signal at 1080p? The reason I ask this is that they can claim it will take the 1080p signal through HDMI but display it in 1080i.

I paid 3499 for 72mx195 at a local NJ B&M. That was over a month ago. I am still waiting for the tv to be delivered, though.
benny32 11-14-05, 09:26 PM Couple of things...
Though Toshiba continues to say it will accept a 1080p signal, no one has gotten that to work over any of the inputs. One of the reasons I don't believe the 1080p thing is mostly because Toshiba isn't tooting it's own horn. If it is true then they're making a huge mistake letting people and publishers think that HP is currently the only manufacturer that can accept 1080p over HDMI. I think we've beaten this dead horse enough. Conclusion: Toshiba is misleading us with some marketing spin. (Prove me wrong, please!!! I would love to be wrong in this case.)
I own the 56mx195 and I haven't found any individual color adjustments either. I'm a little disappointed by that but couldn't be happier with the TV. Don't have my computer hooked up yet though so it's not completely hooked up but even DVD's on my regular progressive scan pioneer look great. HD looks even more amazing, 1080i at full res is amazing. I have no complaints about this TV, for the money I think I got the best TV I could.

But I think I'll run by Charter this afternoon or tomorrow and get a cable card and order one of these. If it works ok, will dump the cable co DVR (MOXI)

Yes, sort of anyhow.
I am using a Cablecard so TVGOS is really my only option. I had it set up and it worked fine until my CC started acting up on me. Then everything got wiped out and I have not gone back to reprogramming the TVGOS.
Setting it up once is a pain so doing it multiple times is not a lot of fun.
Good luck.

I've tried the TVGOS with a VCR. It worked well at least the one time I tried it. Problem for me is using it requires that you watch what is being recorded. This is OK for recording something when you are away, but not for recording one thing while watching another. Unlike a Dish 522 that we once had, TVGOS starts with the VCR off, turns it on, records the show and then turns the VCR off. The 522 required that the VCR be on. This caused problems on occassion if we had a power outage--in which case the VCR went off during the outage and didn't turn back on when the power came on--resulting in a missed recording.
The Adelphia 8300HD DVR allows you to watch a recorded show and record two other shows all at the same time. Much more functional for my uses. However, I can now record two shows on the 8300 and record a show on the VCR using TVGOS as long as the VCR is recording a program that is on a channel not requiring the cable signal go through the cable box.

bruin95 11-18-05, 02:46 AM Does anyone know if there's a way to see how many hours the bulb has on it with the 195 models? Info like this would be useful.
At times when watching HDTV I get audio drop out. Any idea what the cause and remedy are. The signal is from a Motorola stb using the DVI/HDMI input with the audio going from the stb to a Marantz amp. I never had this problem before with the sb. I have the 62mx195.
Thanks!

With TV turned on:
1. Press "mute" on the remote - 1/2 mute appears on the screen
2. Press "mute" on the remote again - mute appears on the screen
3. Press "mute" on the remote and hold the mute button -
4. Press the "Menu" button on the TV's front panel. "S" will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
5. Press the "Menu" button a second time and the "S" will disappear. On the left side of the screen you will see "RCUT" followed by two numbers.
You are now in the service mode.
6. Press "9" on the remote and you will access the diagnostics page. In the right hand corner is the lamp time in hours.
7. Press "power" button on remote to exit the menu and power off the TV.
CAUTION: Do not use the up and down volume keys on the remote in this menu as it can alter the data and can be dangerous.
MasterRabbit 11-18-05, 01:38 PM I took the plunge last Wednesday and went on-line.
Did it arrive Wednesday? Is everything OK with the set?
m4carbine 11-18-05, 08:20 PM OK, I finally took the plunge and ordered my 62MX195 along with the stand (ST6295). I'm getting it from a South Florida A/V store (non-national chain) and he is ordering it. Should get here next Wednesday - just in time to install and set up for the OTA NFL games on Thanksgiving.
Its all gonna cost $3,460 + 7% Florida sales tax.
I also just ordered my OPPO OPDV971H directly from OPPO.
Has anyone had any experience with the OPPO on these Toshiba MX series units? I have read all the fantastic info on the OPPO but would like to hear of that DVD player specifically with this Toshiba DLP line (or if not the HM or HMX models).
Can't wait for this stuff to arrive. Wonder what my wife will say when she gets home and its here.....

SELECTING THE ADJUSTING ITEMS
1) Every pressing of CHANNEL UP or CHANNEL DOWN button in the service mode changes the adjustment items in the order.
ADJUSTING THE DATA
1) Pressing of VOLUME UP or VOLUME DOWN button will change the value of data in the range from 00H to FFH. The variable range depends on the adjusting item.
EXIT FROM SERVICE MODE

ComradeX 11-20-05, 07:35 PM Hi all,
I'm one of the many lurkers eagerly awaiting the day a fancy new big screen shows up my door. My current favorite is the 56MX195. A couple of new questions popped into my head that I havent seen discussed before or in a while:
- I was reading an HP forum and somebody there was talking about the relative merits of bob and weave de-interlacing. Evidently weave is the way to go. Does anybody know which these new Toshs use?
- The point there was that if the proper de-interlacing is used, a 1080i input should look as good as a 1080p, unless somebody comes up with a box that will do 1080p/60. Any comments on that?
- I've also heard that Tosh says that "bad things" will happen if you connect a PC to these sets through the HDMI connector. Is that true? Maybe they just didnt test it, or maybe it's marketing poop to get you to spring for the MX model with the VGA port. Has anybody tried it?

I'm in the market for a 72MX195, which I believe is the same except for the screen size. I also will need to hook up a PC, in my case a HP z545. The MX series comes with a standard VGA input for hooking up a PC. As a matter of fact, that's one of the things that differentiates it from the HM series. So, it shouldn't make any difference whether the HDMI properly accomodates a PC, should it?

Probably not, as long as you run the VGA cable. In my case, my TV and components will be on opposite sides of the room. (Eagerly awaiting the Harmony 890 with RF so I dont have to shoot the remotes over my shoulder. :) I forked over the $$$ for the HDMI cable, thinking it would cover PC as well as DVD or anything else, to save on other cables. I can run a VGA cable if I have to, but I'd like to use the HDMI if possible.
Shamelessly bringing my other post forward to this new page...

strick8 11-21-05, 07:16 AM Hi,
New owner of a 62HM195.
Well I connected my PC using the HDMI port and it looks great! My computer even saw the monitor as a Toshiba TV. I played a few games to see what it would look like. Dungeon Siege II only has a max resolution of 1024x768 so it won’t fill up the screen but still looks good, was able to play with no problems. :D

Depends how interested you are in keeping a digital signal. VGA is an anologue connection.
I've read several pages of this thread, and I'm trying to find out if this 1080p TV will accept a 1080p signal at 1:1 pixel mapping.
Will it take a true 1080p signal through either VGA or HDMI connection?
Thanks
I paid 3499 for 72mx195 at a local NJ B&M. That was over a month ago. I am still waiting for the tv to be delivered, though.
That would appear to be an almost impossibly low price. PC Richard has it for five grand. The lowest price I have seen for this set is at Abe's of Maine for $3,899, but they are actually located in Brooklyn, so I would have to pay NYS sales tax. A NJ vendor on Ebay has it for $4,277. What is a B&M? Did they actually sell it to you at that price?

HughScot 11-24-05, 09:59 PM This is slightly off topic but I would like to know how the experience has been with Toshiba DLP's........the 720p variety. Any problems that are not the usual issues with a new television? Specifically the Toshiba 46HM95.

Hi ,
I just checked and it's $4769 without the stand
I was watching then all of a sudden while changing channels, the TV went through a loud explosion then the picture went blank. Turned off the TV immediately and a few minutes later, turned it back on but picture is still blank, only sound is coming on. The blue light indicator goes on and off and the the yellow standby light blinks non-stop.
Any idea what the problem is?
--Sclaws 11-25-05, 07:47 PM I'm no surgeon but I'd guess your lamp blew. Pull it out and take a look.

I called Toshiba and they told me that my lamp blew up and I read up on the manual and every sign point to the lamp. The sad part is that the bulbs are on back order and it might take weeks to get them.
That sucks, we're in thick of football season. I loved the picture quality so far but for the bulb to go out in a month...
kstevens69 11-25-05, 09:08 PM The bulb going out via explosion is not a good way for one to go. Could this be a manufacture's defect worth of recall?

All DLP bulbs make a loud "pop" sound when they expire, this hardly constitutes an explosion. It is not defective and not worhty of a recall. The part that "pops" is contained within the airtight seal of the bulb itself and poses no risk.

Regardless of the age of your set (lamp) I recommend anyone with a lamp-driven TV to buy a spare bulb and have it on-hand. Its a guarantee that you'll need it eventually and a good feeling of insurance to know its there waiting. The lamps can sit on the shelf for years, so IMO there's very little reason not to order a spare either way.
If you want to get one now (then the Toshiba warranty repalcement lamp becomes your spare--cant lose on the deal! ;)), check here: http://www.projectorlampcenter.com/
Get the lamp part# from your manual and plug it in to their 'Find it' search window...I've had good luck ordering from these guys for home and work. For my 62HM84 the cost is under $290.
I haven't had any success with TVGOS. I have a Toshiba 62MX195 and it's connected to a Motorola DCT6200 STB w/BrightHouse Networks. It's connected as follows:
Cable to splitter; from splitter to ANT1. Other out from splitter goes to the STB, from STB to Sony VCR, from VCR to Video1 on TV. Does anybody have any suggestions for either how to connect or to get TVGOS working?
Thanks!

I have the RCA video out on my Tosh 62hm195 connected to a Sony VCR. I think the TVGOS relies on the video out to feed the recording device. Set up TVGOS through the setup menus. It does work for me but I've found it marginally useful since it records only what the TV is displaying at the time. My SA 8300 DVR is much more functional for me.

I called my local Ultimate Elec after I talked to Toshiba and they scheduled a replacement delivery the next day even though it's past the 30-day period. But they will not do it again if something goes wrong.
I wonder though if Toshiba will send the replacement bulb to me or my dealer? I could use that for a spare.
ChuckBuster 11-28-05, 10:20 PM Question for this forum...has anyone seen a shelf unit, other than the Toshiba one, that works with the 72MX195 (or the other HM)? I have a large center speaker (25.5 inches wide) and a high-end A/V receiver that is 8.5 inches high but needs a few more inches of heat clearance. I've looked at a lot of shelf units and haven't seen anything even close to my needs, eve if the 66 inch width needed for the set wasn't a constraint. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just got a 56mx195. I love the PQ but I have been having a lot of trouble with some of it's features.
1. Optical audio output. I have my cable box connected to HDMI 1 and my DVD player to HDMI 2. I want to use the optical out on the televison because my home theater receiver only has one optical input. When I connect everything, I get no sound at all. I know tjat it is not the receiver because I can got straight from the DVD player with no problems. If I unplug the toslink cable from the receiver, I can see a red light but it is very faint compared to other sources. I've tried playing with the advanced audio settings and resetting the TV, but no go.
2. Cable card. I have comcast as my provider. When I connect the coax to ANT1, I can view all of the analog channels. As soon as I put in the CC, The TV freezes on the current channel and cannot change. If I try to change the channel, I get a message sayoing that it is downloading channel info. I've let it sit up to 12 hours and still no go. Along with this, I've nevr been able to get the GUIDE feature to work.
Has anyone had any trouble getting these things to work?
jumpinjoe 11-29-05, 09:39 AM As far as the audio goes, try connecting the DVD to DLP via HDMI and then use a digital coax cable to go from DVD to AVR. Then use the optical toslink to go from DLP to AVR.
This should fix your problems.
Why are you using a STB and CC? I assume you use the STB because the CC is not working properly?
Here is one way to test things.
Try ejecting the CC and don't use the STB. Then reset the DLP to factory settings. While the TV is off put the CC back in.
When you turn on the TV it will immediately ask you to set up TVGOS. Skip this part and don't set up TVGOS.
Try this for a few days to see if your channels work on a consistent basis. Note that you will not be able to get TVGOS during this time period.
My theory is that the TVGOS and the CC's are having serious compatiability issues. When my TVGOS is diasbled (not set up) then the TV works fine with the CC. And given the better picture with the CC I would rather use it than have TVGOS working.
You'll need to tweak your settings on your AVR to allow for 2 digital inputs and you'll need to make sure your DVD player is outputting sound in the proper format (raw vs. PCM).
Good luck and let me know if this fixes your audio and CC problems.

Has anyone had any trouble getting these things to work?I had the exact same problem with my 62HMX94 and using the Motorola CC with Comcast. Toshiba ended up updating the firmware to correct the problem. It seemed that Comcast was using a wider range of frequencies than the TV was configured to use. It makes sense that if the cable card does not correctly scan the channels you won't get any guide data. The only way to validate that is to remove the cable card and see if the TV can correctly scan the channels (except the encrypted ones of course) and populate TVGOS. If you use the cable feed minus the CC you need to go into the Installation menu and let the TV scan the channels (channel program menu). This is done automatically if using the CC but has to be manually done without it. Once this is done you can view the add/delete channels menu and see what channels are discovered. You should be able to view digital channels and analog ones unless they are encrypted. For example, the digital music channels should be unencrypted. The main difference is the channel numbers will be different than what the STB uses. An example is CBS is normally channel 15 on my STB but 76-1 with the direct feed. There is no documented channel list and you would have to use the up channel button to see what channel and sub channel is used by your provider.

You should try the following.
- Assuming your CC has already been Paired and enabled by Comcast. I assume they installed it the first time and it was working when they left as that's their SOP.
- With TV Off, unplug the TV.
- Insert Cable Card
- Plug TV in and wait for the LED to stop blinking (finish reboot)
- Power on TV
- You will see snow for a few minutes while channel map is updated
- You should then see programming.
If this is not happening, call Comcast to have them swap the card out.
Here's another thing that Comcast told me to do with success when I had decoding problems with my CC. They claim Toshiba provided this procedure.
- Power off TV and unplug.
- With TV unplugged, hit the power button on the side of the TV twice.
- Plug in TV and let it finish booting.
- Turn on TV - snow for about a minute as it reloads channel map.
This procedure fixed my problems when either an HD channel was not decoding or I was seeing decoding errors on multiple channels.

Yes, TVGOS has been working perfectly for about a month with my CC - I do not have OTA, only source is cable on ANT1 with CC.
In fact, I posted this past weekend on the TVGOS thread that my TVGOS data and schedules survived a power cycle I needed to perform to reset my CC (it occasionally fails to decode properly - only happened twice but may ask to have the card swapped if I happens again). After the power cycle, all my existing data was retained, and the next morning my update occurred without any issues. Since I was able to get my TVGOS working it's been stable.
Sigwolf 11-29-05, 01:55 PM If it's the same as the 94 series the instructions are as follows:

On the 72mx195 this doesn't work. Does any else know how to view bulb hours on this model? If I follow the above instructions, everything works through step 4, and the "S" appears. Pressing the "Menu" button second time on the TV does absolutely nothing. If I use the remote "Menu" button for the second press, it does make the "S" disappear and bring up the "RCUT"... however, then pressing "9" on the remote simply replaces the "RCUT" box with a message that says "No Display". I can't get beyond this point.
Any other ideas? Has anyone gotten this to work on a 72mx195?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I just got home and am ready to get to the bottom of this thing. magredc5, when comcast left the card wasn't working. The guy told me it needed time to download channel info. I should have known he had no idea what he was doing when he tried to stick the cc in the memory card slot.

The need to have the address of the cable card and some other info entered in their system in order to recognize the card and allow it to decode.
When the card is plugged in, if you go to MENU/APPLICATIONS/CABLECARD/CABLECARD (tm) PAIRING, there's information from that screen along with the CC hardware address that they need. Before he leaves, the CC should be able to decode channels. Don't let them tell you it could take a few hours, mine literally took 2 minutes to work.

Thanks for the suggestion. I made the change and now it's working. I was answering yes to the question "Cable Box Connected". This was much quicker than the response from Toshiba. I sent them an e-mail which took them a day and half to answer and all they said was to call customer service, which isn't open when I can be in front of the set and make a call!

What firmware version are you running on your Toshiba? I finally got around to calling them today and they said my version 1.2.4 is out of date and they are sending me 1.2.8 and claim it will take care of my TVGOS and CC problems.
I sure hope so! :)

Mine is now doing it most of the time. It shows the current channel on the set top cable box but it is in pink and purple and looks like ghosting and floats around the screen.
To get rid of it, I need to change inputs and then switch back.
I have a Moxi DVR cable STB hooked to ColorStream1 (Component), AV Receiver to ColorStream2 and off-air antenna hooked to Antenna 1 with the other inputs hidden in the config. (They show up in the list but you can't select them.)
I think this started happening once I added the off-air antenna to the mix which I only have because my cable company doesn't carry Fox HD because the broadcasting company that has Fox in my area wants to charge the cable company $25/subscriber per month to carry the HD channel.
Has anyone else experienced this ghosting problem and if so, have you found a resolution? I have an e-mail into Toshiba also but may call them this weekend if I don't hear back from them before then.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Johnny Canuck1 12-01-05, 02:05 AM Regardless of the age of your set (lamp) I recommend anyone with a lamp-driven TV to buy a spare bulb and have it on-hand.
If you buy the lamp to sit on it for a year or two, what happens if the replacement lamp is a lemon and dies after a few hours? How do you prove it has only XX hours of use so that it can be replaced under warranty if you don't use the replacement lamp for a few years?
Actually, do the replacement lamps come with any warranty whatsoever and if so, how do you 'prove' that it died under the warranty period?
I got to say I am a BIG DLP fan but the potential extra costs of lamps over a 6 year period has me worried about potential huge increase in the cost of the unit... (paying an extra $1000 in upkeep on bulbs over 6 years doesn't seem that great a proposition for the typical user for those who use the TV a typical 7-8 hours a day...)

I noticed this with my comcast STB over component video before I got my HDMI cable. The problem happened when I would power up the TV and cable box at the same time. If the cable box was on already, it usually didn't happen. The solution was always to switch inputs and it would correct itself. I have yet to see this happen over HDMI.
Here's an update of soem of the issues I was/am having:
1. Optical audio output. It turns out that comcast HD/DVR boxes (the only ones to my knowledge that have HDMI output) do not transmit digital audio through HDMI. The toshiba optical output only works for digital audio in. If I set the input to ANT1 where I have my direct cable line and tune to an actual digital channel, the optical works no poblem. Comcast tried to tell me that the box doesn't send any audio through the HDMI and wouldn't believe me when I explained to them that only using an HDMI connection still provides sound that outputs from my TV speakers. I'm really annoyed with comcast. They take the easy way every time. "Digital Cable" with predominantly analog channels. HDMI without digital audio, what's next?. Next time I move, a direct view of SSW is going to be a must. I want my dish back.
2. Cable Card. After having comcast here twice with no success and reading about JumpinJoe's situation, I've convinced Toshiba to send me the firmware update. I'll report back as soon as I get it.
After 1 week with the TV, I am quite pleased. I love the PQ, especially HD and DVD. The color wheel fan is a little annoying but I put in a service call to see if this is the norm or if I'm just being too critical.

I bought a 3-year bulb replacement warrantly with mine. It was much less than $1000.

The issue with the newer 6412's was that the coaxial/optical output was disabled when using HDMI so for those that went directly to their receiver it was a problem. That, to my understanding, is addressed with a firmware update. The ability of the Toshiba to pass 5.1 from the optical is another matter. It appears that it only does it from the ANT connection so the TV must be requesting PCM from the source or downcoverting it when using other inputs. I have an HDMI upconverting DVD player and only get PCM digital audio from the TV's optical output. I believe the problem lies in the TV and not the source but until someone can find an HDMI source which they have been able to pass 5.1 out the TV's output we won't know for sure.
I've had problems using Avia to calibrate my TV. Specifically, the white level (contrast) adjustment. I have turned off the dynamic contrast adjustment. I still get the animated bars at the lower right of the steps tool. They go away only when I set the contrast adjustment up to 98 and that is WAY TOO HIGH. I must be missing something. I have had good success with saturation, tint and sharpness. No problem with the black level (brightness) but without the white level being set correctly, the blacks don't look correct either.
Any help GREATLY appreciated!

From what I've read on Samsung and other mfgrs. forums here, the TV optical out doesn't pass the dolby 5.1 on those sets either. I am not surprised that the Toshiba doesn't. My SA8300 and OPPO are both connected to the HDMI ports but I get my sound through optical direct to my AV receiver. I've never used the TV's sound.

Any video lag issues w/ the 62HM195 and the Oppo and/or SA8300? I'm anticipating this will be my exact setup. TIA.

I haven't watched that much with the Oppo--really only one movie and some testing with a few others. No video lag was noticed with the movie. I did not set the Oppo delay either. This isn't a conclusive answer but it's all I have at the moment. If I run into a noticable problem in the future, I will certainly post the results in this forum.

I haven't tried the TV video out direct to the AV receiver. The way my system is set up I don't have long enough optical cables to go from the back of the TV to the AV receiver. Sorry. The Oppo is DVI, so no sound through that connection (DVI to HDMI cable).
I don't know that the HDMI devices are only passing 2 channel PCM. They may be feeding 5.1 and the TV electronics converting that to 2 channel PCM for use by the TV 2 channel speaker system. This may be the reason that the TV optical out only passes 2 channel.
As I said (and this isn't an answer for you) everything I've read is that you won't get 5.1 out of the TV optical audio out when using an HDMI source. Your experience seems to be consistent with the results others have posted for 1080P sets.
Question for you all.
I should be getting my 62hm195 Next week. I have an HK 235 reciever that does not have an HDMI connection. I also have a Panasonic s77 with an HDMI connection. Is there a way to connect this setup to get 5.1 audio and still use HDMI for video? Or do I need to buy a reciever that has HDMI?
I am new at this.

Does your AVR have both a toslink optical input and a digital coax input?
If so, then connect the hdmi from S77 to DLP and the digital coax from S77 to AVR (I made my own cable from the yellow video cable found on most AV cables) and then connect a toslink optical cable from DLP to AVR.
You'll get 5.1 on DVD's and TV stations.
If you have questions let me know.

My Sony DVP-NS975V DVD player is setup with HDMI to the TV for video and the coax digital output of the player is connected directly to the receiver's coax digital input.

Thanks it has both. I will set it up that way. I cannot wait till it arrives everything else is sitting here waiting on it. Has anyone found any user controlled adjustments that are on the MX195 vs. the HM195? I read that there is supposedly a custom color adjustment on the MX model.
Well, I just got my 56mx195. I must say overall SD channels look horrible. I was expecting this so not much of a let down. They looked pretty bad on my sony 46in as well. The only difference here it is didn't really upscale everything. The nice thing about my earlier sony was the soft focus the TV had. Kind of built in antialiasing.
One of the first things I've noticed and I am no expert is how incredible the colors are. They are SO bright even with lamp turned down that I thought something was wrong with the TV. The variation between the dark and light is amazing.
I did notice a bit of noise "horizontal lines" streaked across the background in the grey as I was switching channels in the cable box, but that was eliminated by switching to the hdmi from component cables. I had that issue with my old sony, and direct TV. I even have a really good power conditioner, nothing seems to help. Luckily it seems be completely gone on total digital inputs nothing on VGA or HDMI. I still need to put in AVIA and/or Video Essentials I have both sitting on top of the TV ready to go. I am trying to let the TV grow on my a bit before I start messing with things too much.
All I can say is WOW on the HD. OTA looks much nicer than cable HD. I am still futzing around a bit looking at it messing with the options. We do need a hack to fix individual colors though. I didn't see one when I was reading the thread and their are not lots of picture options to change in the regular menus.
One thing I did try is my notebook with VGA I was unable to get any mode other than 1024x768 or less to work. It is a pretty basic notebook so I didn't have powerstripe, or a decent video chip. The notebooks native resolution is 1280x768. I couldn't get that to work either. Now it DID Look really nice but it did not fill the screen.
Well, I have rambled on enough. I am currently using Timewarner digital cable and in our areas most of the channels I watch are analog with the exception of the hd channels obviously and premiums. Does directTV give a better picture on non HD signals. I used to have Directv but I switched in favor of cable since they provided the free(well almost) hd DVR. I cant live with out my DVR. I would gladly switch back to direct if I knew the picture was better. Anyone have a side by side comparison.
jumpinjoe 12-04-05, 05:34 PM A Cabelcard will make SD and HD channels look better. I have done extensive testing and can notice a big difference when I switch between the CC and a STB.
bruin95 12-04-05, 07:11 PM Well, I just got my 56mx195. I must say overall SD channels look horrible.
That's a problem with your source and not necessarily the TV. I have the 62HM195 and my SD looks great from 8 feet and further.
All I can say is WOW on the HD. OTA looks much nicer than cable HD.
That should really tell you everything you need to know about your source. You shouldn't notice that much of a difference between OTA and cable HD. Try a different STB or get a cable card. That could very well make a big difference in your case.
stu_1080p 12-04-05, 09:18 PM Dracus,
Glad to hear your experience with the TV. I bought a 62hm195 back in Oct. and I love it so far. The only thing I am going to ditch is my Digital Cable and HD-DVR. I like them but they are not worth the $60+ a month. I get about 6 HD channels OTA here in Tampa and I think that the OTA looks better. Probably because of the compression scheme or something with the Cable.
All,
I have a question about 1080p. It seems that 1080p is NOT supported over HDMI for the Toshiba "195" series. With that said, how can it get a source to play 1080p? An interesting observation - When I was playing with the antenna on my TV, HD-NBC started breaking up and I noticed when the reception was stabilizing the resolution icon on the screen showed "1080p" momentarily. I understand this was just the TV trying to sync up to the signal (as after I stopped playing with it displayed 1080i). My question is how does Toshiba expect the TV to ever be able to display 1080p if no input on the TV accepts it? Since Component is analog could it ever deliver a 1080p signal? I bought this TV in hopes to hook up a PS3 to get 1080p but now I have my doubts. Thanks for any input!
Yes, my intent with the sd channels look horrible statement was geared towards the fact timewarner in my area sucks.
Already got a cable card on order. I'll let you know how that it turns out.

I just got my 56MX195 this weekend as well. I have DirectTV and the SD channels look incredible (I mean, as good as SD channels can look on that large of a TV). I had a friend over who has a 3 year old then-top-of-the-line Sony 60" XBR. He has DirectTV also and commented on how noticeable a difference my SD channels were compared to his.
If you are getting bad SD channels I would say it has to be the cable. My channels do look very good. I was also lucky enough to get the satellite guy out this weekend to replace my dish with a triple-LNB HD dish.. and wow.. HD is simply amazing on this TV. The discovery channel left me breathless. Even the installer when he saw the HD picture after activating (an ESPN college football game) was taken back by the picture.
Outerlymitz 12-05-05, 02:32 PM I just took delivery of my 62" Toshiab 62mx195. I was worried about all the posts on this thread about the incompatabilities when running a MCE machine through a DVI to HDMI cable. I had the delivery guys hook it up and make sure that it was going to work before I signed off on the set.
Well rest assured that the Toshiba MX195 DOES work with Media Center 2005. I had to force TV detection to get The Nvidia drivers to realize the set. Changed my resolution and reconfigured my underscan. All I can say about the picture quality through HDMI and Media Center is breathtaking. The text is amazingly ledgable at such a high resolution. Is this true that the TV won't accept 1080P inputs? We are about to pull the trigger on this television but not if the input resolution is limited. With Blue Ray around the corner and the PS3 soon to come out with 1080P output, it might not be worth getting this television and not be able to feed the 1080P set with its own native resolution.
Outerlymitz 12-05-05, 03:28 PM Don't know if it will accept it. I run Media Center at 1880x1020 at 1080i timings and the mx195 detects and syncs correctly. Is there a program to use to output 1080p through DVI? Powerstrip? If so I can try when I get home

Johnny Canuck1 12-06-05, 02:36 AM I bought a 3-year bulb replacement warrantly with mine. It was much less than $1000.
Sorry I meant 2 things:
1)
If the lamp typically lasts 6000 hours (in bright mode) the average family might go through a lamp every 2-3 years.
2)
If you buy the lamp to sit on it for a year or two, what happens if the replacement lamp is a lemon and dies after a few hours? How do you prove it has only XX hours of use so that it can be replaced under warranty if you don't use the replacement lamp for a few years?
That means that the average family might have to buy 3 lamps every 6 years (e.g. $1000) which would be quite a bit of upkeep.
Secondly, I was wondering what the manufacturer warranty is on the lamp and how do you 'prove' that it died under the warranty period?
Thanks
Well its official. Time Warner in my area sucks. I have found out a few things.
1. On my 8300hd if I plug in the HDMI cable I loose digital out put over optical. All I get is 2 channel audio. Apperarently once you plug in the hdmi all audio channels are reduce to two channels.
I tried running the optical from tv to the receiver but that didn't work either. So for the time being I guess hdmi it worthless, unless I want to buy an HDMI to DVI and then DVI to DMI. Seems a pretty kugi solution.
Any one have a better solution, let me know.
2. Their SD programming looks HORRIBLE.
3. I wont even compare their DVR vs my old Directivo.
So here is what I am looking at.
Originally I switched from directv to cable because they made me a deal and I didn't have to pay for an HD Box. Now, I almost don't care about paying for the box if I can get tivo back :) but I can't seem to get Fox to come over the air. Couldn't live without fox HD. WXIX here.
I am considering direct again but unfortunately their new formats are NOT going to be compatible with the older tivo hd unit and all things I have read is they wont have an HD box available until the middle of next year.
Someone with HD box lfrom directv et me know how they like their receptions. I may switch again if they make me good enough deal.
Of course, I'd like to get the digital audio issue solved, and I do have a cable card coming so we'll see how that improves the picture.

Theres a few posts on this over in one of the other forum.. but two things.
1) DirecTV is upgrading to Mpeg4 allowing them to carry all locals as well as a slew more HD channels.. I think you already know this.. and I hadn't heard that about the HD DVR.. I had assumed it would be ready when DirecTV made the switch.. but maybe not. The installer told me point blank that DTV *IS* upgrading everyone for free. That's not to say they'll have the HD "Tivos" ready when they do the initial switch.
2) Here is the deal I got on my HD upgrade (keep in mind I was an existing DTV customer.. I just called the Customer Retention department directly:
HR10-250 HD Tivo
HD Package free for 6 months.
Showtime/HBO free for 3 months.
Dish and Install and install of my existing Tivo to any other room
For $597 total (tax, etc..)
-200 MIR
$397 out the door.
They will also provide an OTA antenna if you're close enough. I live around 40 miles from the stations so I'd have to get a huge "Violet" capable OTA. My area (Cleveland) is supposed to be HD LOcal'ized in march so I'm not gonna mess with the locals until they're available on satellite.

Were you still under contract when you called retention? I have about 6 months to go on my contract.
I have a 62HM195 coming in 2 weeks. I'm going to talk to DirecTV about upgrading to HD.
An HD issue for Alaskans is that we need a larger dish. In Juneau I had to get a 4 foot dish. Cost me a fortune to get it. A local satellite guy told me I should be able to get both Spaceway F1 and Spaceway F2 from the same dish in the future. I really don't want to have to get a sceond dish. Thanks

The reason one of these TV's is still attractive is that it can display the whole 1080i resolution as well. Assuming you have a good quality signal and a good quality TV you will notice a difference in sharpness coming from a 720p TV. The other upside is that HTPC users are able to use 1920x1080 resolution for the first time on alot of these TV's which is huge deal to us. If you look at 720p tv next to a 1080p side by side displaying the same 1080i signal and can't see a difference don't buy one, that would be my advice. The only one that can accept 1080p over HDMI is the HP's to my knowledge. I bought 56mx195 because I noticed a difference in highdef signals, I am also a avid HTPC user, and I really like Toshiba products.

Most likely they didn't use the newer HDMI transmitters that support 1080p input that were introduced in March.
So if the set upconverts to 1080p. How do you make it do that or does it always. When I watch my 1080i HD channels they don't ever say 1080p??

Toxarch 12-07-05, 03:15 PM Everyone including a salesperson I talked to says the TV will not accept a 1080p signal. I believe it if you say it. But, I got an e-mail back from Toshiba and their Customer Service rep says that the PC, HDMI, and Colorstream connections all WILL accept a 1080P signal. I had specifically asked about the Toshiba 62HM195. So is everyone doing something wrong or are the Toshiba reps misinformed?

God I wish someone could give a definitive answer on this. Maybe we will have to wait until HD-DVD or Blu -Ray comes out.

I can say with 99% certainty that this set will not accept a 1080p signal and display it unmolested. What I mean by that is, the tv most likely downconverts to best signal it can accept, probably 720p/1080i, and then upconverts it 1080p internally. The only hope I can see is that a tosh tech person said the tv will support a 1920x1080 res through the pc input at 59.97 timings. This is very specific and gives me cause to believe it. However no one has posted any success with that so who knows. So the bottom line is will it accept a 1080p signal...sort of. Hope this helps.

stu_1080p 12-07-05, 06:19 PM How can we check to see if TV supports 1080p? I hooked my PC up to my 62HM195 with an HDMI to DVI cable and I can get 1920x1080 resolution and the driver says that it is outputting at 60HZ.
Also, I ordered an RCA DVR2160 with firewire connection. Some people have mentioned that they have seen some in-store demos at 1080p with these sets using a firewire DVR. The only problem is how can I get 1080p content to put on the DVR to test? Maybe I can hook the DVR to my computer and see if I can put some 1080p content on it. Microsoft has some 1080p content on their site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/ContentShowcase.aspx) but it is encoded in the WMV format. I don't think this will work. Any suggestions?

With an Oppo player I can specify a 540P output to the TV with DVI to HDMI cable . The 62hm195 displays it but says it is a 1080I signal---go figure. I can not tell any difference between the 540P Oppo output and the 1080I Oppo output on this TV. In any case, the manual says "Suggested formats". It does not say exclusive.

That's amazing!! I know previous posters have said that the best they could do was 1280x720. What video card are you using and did you have to install a specific driver for the TV as a display? Also what version driver are you using for your video card? Congrats

Why don't you think this will work? If you outputing 1920x1080 to the tv it should work just fine as long as your computer meets the system requirements to play at that resolution.

He's talking about putting content an external drive that is connected to the TV's firewire port. I don't think the TV will recognize the windows media format.
kurosawamifune 12-08-05, 03:24 PM Quick question:
I was in Sears today, and saw the 56HM195. It looked nice, though probably on par with the Wega 3LCD 60 inch that was sitting right next to it(though up close, the WEGA did have the screen door effect - but again, that was very close).
However, when looking at the menus - a display popped up on the screen that indicated the TV was in the Bright lamp mode, and that it was in "Natural"(not any of the Theaterwide modes)... it also said:
1080i
I asked the saleslady if there was a way to get this into 1080p and she had no idea what I was talking about, of course. I didn't find anyway to get it into 1080p in the menus.
I thought that perhaps the set was only on par with the WEGA next to it because it wasn't displaying in 1080p, but I couldn't find any setting to get it there in the menus.
Is the 1080p reading on the display info what it was currently displaying, or more likely was it telling me what the source video was?
Any ideas?

The info on the screen (1080i, 720p, 480i) refers to the input format, not the display. The screen is project at 1080p. There are no specific menu options to access this as it's the native resolution generated in the TV (although wobulated).
Also, I assume the Sony was the 1080p SXRD Wega, the comparison of the two would be reasonably close.

And no - the Sony wasn't the SXRD, which was surprising. I have seen that TV as well in Best Buy. This one said "3LCD" on it, but it didn't have a model number listed.
I didn't think that it made sense that a 3LCD TV could compete with the Toshiba, so I assume it was an issue of setting. The image on the 3LCD was punchier and very slightly sharper, and it even had slightly deeper blacks, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense in comparison.
I'm looking into getting the exact same TV that you have. How do you like it? How does it compare to the SXRD, which I have seen and was very impressed by?

I have a 128MB Geforce 5950 with the latest Forceware drivers (81.95). In the driver menu it recgonizes the Toshiba as an HDTV but only has options for 480p, 720p, and 1080i. The quality is very good...I just got my RCA DVR in so I will have to play around with that to see if I can get any 1080p stuff on it.
Update:
Has anyone used a RCA DVR2160 on a Toshiba before? I seem to only be able to record from "ANT 1" and "Video 1". Is it possible to record from my Bright House SA8300HD DVR connected via HDMI cables or any other input?
herdfan 12-08-05, 08:27 PM I just got my 56MX195 this weekend as well. I have DirectTV and the SD channels look incredible (I mean, as good as SD channels can look on that large of a TV).
I was just getting ready to ask this question, so I am glad I went back a few pages. My 56MX195 is being delivered next week. I originally bought an RCA HD61LPW175 and while the style of the set can't be beat, but the PQ was less than stellar. In fact, I really can't stand to watch it. So the local dealer let me exchange it for the Toshiba. I saw one at another dealer so I had seen it.
I don't watch much, if any, SD, but my wife and daughter do and the RCA was almost unwatchable in SD.

Just to be clear, the SXRD is a 3LCD RP TV that uses LCoS technology. I believe the SXRD does say 3LCD WEGA on the front of it so if you go back you should ask the salesperson to verify.
As for my Toshiba, I am very happy with it. SD programming is OK to Very Good depending on the channel. Some SD 480i programs look very good. HD looks from Excellent to Amazing depending on the source. NFL and Hockey look like you're there.
I did not see a big difference with the SXRD, and for several reasons I went with DLP, including picture quality, price, features, and weight. I wanted a Cable Card capable TV since the TV signal processing is better than the cable box.
I know 2 people with the SXRD that both cannot use the cable card due to problems with the card being disabled every 2 days. The picture is supposed to be better than DLP, but they tell me that they can see trails on fast moving objects, like a tennis ball.
I am very pleased with the Toshiba and would buy it again.

Thank you for the great response. I nice endorsement to be sure, and I think you've just pushed me into "buy" on this Toshiba.
I don't think the Sony was the SXRD - I have seen that TV, and I didn't notice the "dumbo ears" on this one. Not to say they weren't there, as I wasn't really looking for them, but I really don't think I saw them. I'm pretty positive the Sony 3LCD was their other Wega line, not based on the new SXRD technology.
I have read about the differences between the MX195 and the HM195, but want to make sure I have this correct - am I correct in my understanding that there is no optical difference between the two TVs, and that it's really a difference of features(handy features, to be sure) between the two?

That's right, the main differences between the HM195 and MX195 is the MX has an ethernet port so you could connect it to a home network to access pictures and MP3s, as well as some other neat features. The cabinets look the same except the MX's screen bezel is black and the HM is dark silver.

Yup that is correct. The picture quality is the same. The MX has a few (several??) features that the HM does not have... VGA input, THINC (ethernet) connectivity, and some other things.
I am truly loving my 56" MX195. Of course, now I want bigger :)
I looked at both the 56MX195 and the Sony 60" XRD side by side at HHGregg and while the Sony probably has slightly better PQ (and that's probably debatable) it is so big it was a turn off. The HM/MX series size is nearly all scree, while there is easily and additional 18 inches (maybe a little more) of excess "speaker" space that Sony stuck on the side of the model. To me this made it VERY unattractive and I did not even consider getting the Sony (not to mention the ridiculous mark up on these things at the moment). It may be a little better PQ wise, but in my mind the price and excess girth does not justify it.
Has anyone used any of the available calibration tools on any of these sets? I have the Avia DVD and just got the GetGray DVD. I'm going to play with these as soon as get my new DVD player and was interested in what settings any of you have come up with.
Also, has anyone received their firmware upgrade from Toshiba yet? If so, how long did it take?
I got the 62MX195 FOR $2699.06 shipped to my door. Now granted I did get it offline and I think they did screw up.. But I think it was a heck of a steal. I ordered the HM and the MX showed up. I was happy. I will surely take it :)

Joe:
Did Toshiba provide a list of specific items this F/W fixes? My TV is working fine, but I did have some occasional issues with my CC and had Comcast swap it out last week, as well as some quirks with TVGOS when I reorder channels but I know how to fix that.
I figure if my CC acts up again (occasionally after several weeks will garble several HD channels during decryption as if it's corrupting the video signal) and this F/W does address CC issues, I may give Toshiba a call to get the upgrade.
Thanks,
John

Hi, Nice to know DLP picture quality is good. I have some general questions on DLP (deciding to go buy one in a day or two):
I have narrowed my choices to go with one of HL-R5667W or HL-R5668W. The difference mainly is that *67W has native resolution of 720p whereas *68W has native resolution of 1080p. As I understand, most HD broadcasting today is either 720p or 1080i? Not sure really how many programs air in 1080i. So would the 1080p DLP model stretch out the 720p or 1080i broadcastings to show in 1080p, would that mean some quality is lost in format conversion to 1080p?
While I was at BestBuy, I got a demo of a home theatre system with a Panasonic Plasma model to check for video delay that some of you mentioned is inherent. I'm not sure how different the delay in DLP is when compared to a Plasma when the sound is run through a receiver, but I didn't notice anything considerable then. Is this a serious issue in DLP that is going to make the TV watching experience unpleasant?
Thanks.

No, 1080p has more information/resolution than 720p. The TV will interpolate the extra data and add the data to the 720p picture to create a 1080p picture.
kstevens69 12-09-05, 04:55 PM Well, I just took delivery of my 72hm195. The picture in hd mode is gorgeous. In sd mode it is alright as long as I set back from the set, which I normally do :-). I can't complain thus far. Hopefully, they have fixed the light issue with this newer set. Any body figure out how to access the service menu to check the bulb hours yet on this set?
Thanks,

ABC, FOX and ESPN are 720p. CBS and NBC and most everybody else is 1080i.
I just read in another forum an owner of an HP claims that the HP 1080P sets that claim to accept 1080p thru HDMI is only half true.
He states that it is limited to 1080p at 30 fps and will NOT do 1080p at 60fps. Now if true that certainly puts a damper on its "future proofing".
Another reason to go Toshiba.
Does anyone know if this can be confirmed?

jumpinjoe 12-12-05, 04:24 PM Anyone else here have the Symbio? If so, is the HD loop on the drive 1080p? It looks better than the upconverted HD stuff I get through my OTA Antenna.
Da Rafsta 12-12-05, 04:33 PM Since this Toshiba 1080p converts EVERYTHING to 1080p, wouldn't this cause 480i and 480p source to look awfully distorted?
Also, what would the conversion of 720p to 1080p look like? I already know that 1080i upconverted to 1080p is the best this T.V. offers.
Someone has asked about what 480i, 480p upgraded looks like. I can tell you that poor quality 480i analog cable is blocky, dark and doesnt look much better than a really crappy made mpg from years ago. This is of course source related. Here some channels are better than others. I know watching "The triangle" was painfully bad.
Dvd's off my xbox 360, jvc stand alone looks fantastic upconverted by the TV.
I was questioning my purchase based mostly on poor analog performace. However. I flipped over and found "cliff diving from hawaii" on inhd2. All I can say is OMG. Micro beads of water dripping off people, perfect vistas without a hint color banding. I couldn't stop watching it.
I also have played 1080i movies from my media center pc over the xbox360 and that is AWESOME as well. The xbox360 is simply amazing.
I have downloaded a few "tv shows" I have missed lately. Playing them on the regular xbox being internally upgraded to 1080i were very nice. Especially considering they were starting out as divx recorded off of satalite in england.
I did find switching the cable box to allow all formats output greatly improved the overall picture. It appears that the 8300HD does a REALLY crappy job of upconverting programming.
I guess I would sum thing up like this. If you're going to watch a LOT of poor quality sd television especially analog cable then you might find a 26in tube more to your liking. If you want the most fantastic realistic HD programming around then this is the TV for you.

480i/480p will not look distorted, rather just less resolution since the TV fills in the missing lines with approximated data through it's conversion process. A good quality 480i signal looks very good.
As for 720p, all I can say is that Fox Football is amazing, which I believe is recorded and transmitted completely at 720p. Again, the TV converts the input to 1080p by extrapolating the additional lines of resolution.
