bkazepis 03-22-06, 06:34 AM Having other people's settings really isn't going to help you because what looks good to one person may not look good to you. Plus everyone has different equipment and programming sources. Too many variables to have just one set of "settings" that works for everyone. BTW, while the Avia and DVE discs are good to have on hand, they really only help to calibrate your DVD player. The picture settings on both of my HDMI inputs are completely different. One for the DVD player and one for digital cable. Two different sources with two completely different settings. If you want proper calibration of your Tivo's HDMI input, you'll probably need an ISF certified tech.
If you have INHD they do run a calibration show on Saturday mornings at 7am...if you record it you can use it to calibrate your HDMI input (assuming you connect your STB via HDMI) with the test patterns etc...I have calibrated my Oppo DVD, hooked up via HDMI with Avia and my second HDMI input with the INHD calibration program which I recorded on my SA83000HD....
Don1959 03-22-06, 03:56 PM Although everybody has said that other peoples setting won't help you... here are mine....
SA8300 thru hdmi1:
contrast - 65
brightness - 55
color - 45
tint - -2
sharpness - 0
dynamic contrast - off
dnr - off
color temp - medium
lamp - low
Hope they help getting you started...

cubsh8r 03-22-06, 03:59 PM Thanks for the feedback bkazepis and Bruin95. I know the settings can differ greatly, I was looking for ballpark b/c my eyes aren't very well 'trained' and I have never setup HDMI.
What is INHD stand for, not sure if DirecTV offers it? If they do that would be exactly what I need.
Thx again
cubsh8r 03-22-06, 04:01 PM Sweet Don1959, lets me know I'm at least close. Exactly what I was looking for!

Ooops...INHD is a cable only channel I dont think D*TV offers it...it is a fantastic way to calibrate though....
Sweet Don1959, lets me know I'm at least close. Exactly what I was looking for!Just a hint.If you happen to have any of the Star Wars DVDs,or any other THX discs, there is a set of test patterns located on the disc. Good luck
cubsh8r 03-22-06, 06:03 PM gotcha, I use those along with AVIA or DVE, was just looking for something to help with HDMI Sat connection. No problem though set looks pretty good now. thx
long time lurker with a question for you oppo enthusiast. How susceptible are the 1080p toshiba's to the macroblocking bug with the oppo. If its tame then this will be the replacement for my recently bought sony dvpns70h which has the shifting problem. Everything i have heard about the oppo is pointing me in that direction but the macroblocking can drive me crazy. Thanks for the response and for providing people like me a place to research AV.

Had the DVPNS70H....horrible shifting issue....tried the Toshiba upconverting DVD player, picture was too soft...just got the Oppo....picture...PERFECT!
I cannot recommend the Oppo more...get it. :D
I think that was all i really needed. a little confirmation goes a long way.

On well mastered commerical DVD's, I see no macroblocking with the Oppo and 62HM195. None at all! With homemade DVD's recorded with my DVD recorder, I see plenty of macroblocking. I now just watch those DVD's with the recorder and play store bought DVD's in the Oppo.

I had the Oppo but because of lip sync problems and macroblocking I returned it. I own the Sony dvpns70 now. It has a slight shift but I think the picture is better then the Oppo. I am keeping the Sony. However I will retire the Sony to my Plasma T.V. when a new Sony comes out without the shift problem. On my plasma the sony does not have a shift problem.

Did you install the latest firmware that addressed the lip sync issue?

I can deal with that. thanks. Would you be on board with the PQ being worth the minor macroblocking if it was your only one?
cjlawson 03-23-06, 05:10 PM Did you install the latest firmware that addressed the lip sync issue?
Yes I did. It didn't really resolve the issue just added a setting to control the delay. But since the delay was sparatic it would come and go I was unable to find a setting the worked. It was also confirmed to me by OPPO that it was a hardware problem on there end. Some people have and some don't. I still prefer the picture of the sony just wish it did not have the shift.
nbdyspl 03-23-06, 05:15 PM Well I have been watching my new bulb for awhile now as you can tell I havent been posting much and I can say that its lasted so far.The good news is my set does qualify for the extended warranty thanks for pointing it out enmoco and thank you Toshiba for doing this!!!!
Traveler62 03-23-06, 08:31 PM Anyone have a problem when turning on the set (62hm195 in my case) and the picture is in Theatre Wide 1 even though the pic select says natural? I have to select TW1 then go back to natural to get the pillars back. I think it has to do with the TV Guide getting its info from a HD channel (PBS, I believe) when it is in standby. This happens most of the time when I start with Input 1 which is Sat using an svideo connector.

Will show up in the preference mode. Just a suggestion.Does your set come on in a different imput than the last setting at exit of previous viewing? Does TVGOS come up when you turn your set on? Since you say your on sat..I suppose all your channels are digital. Have an OTA ant.? One of those "hands on" fixes. ;)
Well, I'm loaded for bear now!
My set qualifies for the Tosh 2-year lamp protection deal, I've got an additional year warranty thru American Express, I've got a 3-year 2-lamp RepairMaster warranty, and.... :)
wait for it.... ;)
oh, yes.... :D
I've got my spare lamp in an empty cabinet in the entertainment unit!!!
The nice thing about these Toshiba sets is that you know in advance how it's going to cr@p out on you, and you can prepare in advance. Unlike some of the other brands, with green globs and dead tuners and whatnot!

I appreciate the advice. I believe I have all of these things covered. I should add that I have OTA going in Ant 1 which is supplying the TV Guide. One thing I am going to try tonight is adding the channel for analog PBS to the selection. I only have digital channels listed since the other locals come from Satellite.

The Oppo has the best picture quality of any DVD player I have ever owned, so I would say yes. Like i said, on commercial DVD's, I see no macroblocking. I only see it on discs made with my DVD recorder. That thing is like 5 years old, though. Maybe upgrading to a new one would make a difference. Besides, with good calibration, macroblocking can be virtually eliminated.

Run...dont walk....to your computer and order the Oppo...
I agree completely. The oppo rules. But do download the latest firmwear. Nearly any complaint I have ever heard about oppo can be fixed by that simple step.

Ok, this is ridiculus. I got my TV at the end of Janaury (manufactured Decemeber 2005) and the bulb blew today. Just went POP. :(
Here is the clencher. I at worst case watched it 8 hours a day meaning no more than 500 hours on the bulb. I have been happy with the TV for a while. Luckily Toshiba is standing behind the product in terms of bulbs.
I do have an extended warantee through the place I bought the TV, as well as an extra year from my credit card. Still, I think I'll make toshiba fix it this time.
Now I just need the replacement bulb SOON.
jumpinjoe 03-27-06, 11:18 AM Toshiba sent me a letter today informing me of the troubles with the bulbs on certain DLP's made in 2005 and mine is one of the units which qualifies for a new bulb.
There are sending out new bulbs by 5/31 which are an improvement over the original bulb and my 3 week old replacement bulb.
So it looks like I'll have a spare bulb on hand in case the replacement blows.
Thanks Toshiba for stepping up to the plate and taking care of us! :)

Wow! I sure do hope my letter is in the mail too. My SN entered into the Toshiba service center said that my set qualified for the warranty extension, but I sure would like to stop worrying that I am overusing the bulb on my set and start enjoying it for what it is, great.

Is the word "recall" in any part of the letter??..This is great news...i cant see why they would only do it for you...hopefully all of us who qualify will be getting the letter...I just got my mail and did not have the letter :( They will probably require the old one be sent back...is there any mention of that in the letter??
jumpinjoe 03-27-06, 01:33 PM No mention of recall or having to return the old bulb.
"It is not necessary to install the new lamp right away. Please continue using your current lamp, and keep the new lamp as a spare until it is needed."
Keep in mind that I already have a replacement lamp from Toshiba so now I'll have 2 relatively new bulbs with one being the old type and one being the new.

Hopefully, it doesn't take till May to get this replaced. Mine is broken now. :(
Update: Toshiba said I'd have mine by the end of the week.
:D I can't get that telephone book scene from "The Jerk" out of my head............ "THE MAILS HERE....THE MAILS HERE"
This is going to sound really crazy but.......
Has anyone noticed that their TV occasionally pops and crackles? Maybe it’s just me but it seems that ever since I got the replacement lamp my TV lets go with an occasional pop or crackle. The sound is similar to what you'd hear from heating/cooling duct work expanding. It's not nearly as loud as the POP I heard when the lamp blew but still discernable.
I'm hopeful that everyone will get a letter like jumpinjoe's and issues like the above will be a thing of the past. Either that, or I may have to borrow one of drboyd's cornucopia of lamps!

They lose money on the CC compared to the STB and are not in a hurry to resolve any issues with the CC.
Thanks, guys. I feel a little better regarding my snap, crackle, pop.
Now my next question. I read an article about a week ago regarding an upcoming convention for movie theater owners. One of the main topics was whether owners feel threatened by the quick proliferation of home theaters system. In a nutshell, they said "no."
Personally, I think they're crazy and see home theaters as a direct threat to their line of business. In fact, I haven't been to a theater in months and have absolutely no intention of going back unless strong armed by the forces of nature.
What do you think - Do Movie Theater owners have anything to worry about?

jumpinjoe please clarify something...have you had a bulb replaced already?
The reason I ask is I just got off of the phone with Toshiba CS, I told them I heard they were proactively sending out bulbs to people within the defective SN range, he said they were BUT, not to everyone, only people who have already had the bulb replaced...
Please verify...thanks :D
EDIT..oops I guess thats what you meant by 3 week old replacement...DUH
jumpinjoe 03-27-06, 07:31 PM Over all I don't see a threat to the movie industry simply because only a small portion of the population can afford a wide screen TV so most have no option other than going to see a movie.
But for those of us who have a large TV it's definitely a threat. I can't remember the last time I went to see a movie. And you can't exactly pause the movie to refill your martini when you are away from home ;)

Dear Crutchfield Customer,
Thank you for ordering from Crutchfield. Toshiba has recently issued an important product update concerning their DLP televisions. The life of some lamps in a limited number of 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges may be less than originally expected.
As part of their ongoing commitment to customer service, Toshiba is extending the warranty on the originally-installed lamp in these units for one additional year (for a total warranty period of two years) to enable customers with those televisions to obtain a new and improved lamp free of charge if the originally-installed lamp fails.
To determine if your particular DLP television qualifies for this extended warranty, please visit Toshiba's website below:
wont let me post ulr
Be assured that Toshiba DLP televisions are of the highest quality and this update regards a limited issue. Should you require assistance in this matter or have questions, please call us at 1-800-955-9094. We're available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to Midnight (Eastern Standard Time).
Sincerely,
Phil Jones

...I made the right choice with Toshiba. They're standing up on the lamp issue and the picture quality -- even on SD! - is nothing short of astounding.
...and even more unbelievable - I've had my set for over a month and it's still not available cheaper! Matter of fact, the internet price at hideflifestyle actually went up! I can't hardly believe that - I just knew that three days after I bought it the price would drop like a rock!

Your right. I checked and most of the retailers have raised their price. Must be due to the Lamp Issue being resolved. Makes me feel better that I jumped in!
Hi - thanks for the response. I was refering to the sync issue between the HD TIVO and the TV - nothing to do with the recording process. I fully and completely understand that the TV is not required for recording. Let me clairify. I understand that the manual recommends to turn the TV on then the "signal providing device" in my case my HD-TIVO. Just turning the TV on and getting it to correctly sync with the "already live and active" incoming signal. The left to right shift problem happens with cable and satellite signals as i have both going to the TV in seperate inputs. I have tested this by turning the TV completely off.. unpluging, leaving the signal on and live to the TV, reboot TV and the problem persists until I switch the inputs with the remote.
Only then does the signal correct itself and display correctly. (BTW - this happens with HDMI, HD input 1, HD input 2, ANT1, ANT2.) THese are the ones I tested.
Further data: If you turn the TV off for a short amount of time... say 1 hour, the problem does not appear. Only when the TV is off for an extened period of time, say overnight for example.
Thanks again,
Myke
I have exactly this problem. When powering up the TV (after it's been off for a long time), it comes up with a pink image that is rolling and shifting, clearly out of sync. The only cure is to switch inputs, and go back again. This is really annoying, has anyone found a fix?
I'm running the HD-Tivo at 1080i through component (my HDMI output on the Tivo is bad). TIA for any help!

I got the same letter from Toshiba today, and yes, this only applies to people who have an eligible TV and have ALREADY had their bulb replaced. It seems that Toshiba's "new and improved" bulb has not actually been sent to anyone yet and the people who got replacements got another of the faulty ones. This is their way of making it good. Toshiba figures the replacement is probably going to blow within a few months so they might as well send out a "good" bulb to those customers BEFORE their replacements blow to ease the burden on the flood of calls to Customer Service in the coming months. I've been critical of Toshiba the past few months, but I must give them credit for the way they handled this situation. Good job.

As the retailers of lamps were buying them up and creating the shortages before, they are now scrambling to dump the "old" lamps.

I have had this happen on occasion (very intermittent) I brought it up to Toshiba, had numerous calls back and forth with them. They said perhaps my connections were not in solidly. I must tell you, since I made sure they were making good contact it hasnt happend. Could be a coincidence I'l report back if it happens again.
Additionally, when viewing my SA HD8300 High Def DVR thru HDMI I get snow, yes I said SNOW which is real weird. I have to switch to a SD channel and then back to the HD channels and it works fine. Had Tosh send out a tech, he verified that the TV has no issue and its the handshake or communication between the STB and the TV. Of course he said its the STB's fault not the TV's so I have to deal with it...Cablevision is clueless

Are you using the TVGOS? I had an issue that may or may not be related. When I would turn on the TV, the picture would go TW1 instead of natural with the pillars. When the TV is off it is getting TVGOS info from what I understand is the PBS Channel. I changed this from 19-2 (1080I) to 19-1 (480I) and that cured the problem. The TV uses OTA for the TVGOS, but we usually have the input set to Sat (non-HD) on Input 1 on power-up.
Anyway, I think sometimes the TV keeps some of the properties of the station it was tuned to while it was off (stand-by). In my case I would select TW1, then Natural for the pic and it would be fine. Even though your issue is different, it might be related to the same switching of the input when the TV powers up.
Thanks for the inputs.

No, I don't use TVGOS. I get OTA via the HD-Tivo, so I never use the TV's tuner/guide/etc. The Tivo upscales everything to 1080i (even OTA SD, if I'm not mistaken). So I wouldn't think that anything was happening with the Tivo while the TV is off that would cause a sync issue.
I will try reseating the component cables and see if this helps.
jumpinjoe 03-28-06, 12:46 PM If it were me, I would not think of buying a replacement bulb from anyone, anywhere! Wait until the new bulbs come out and find out the difference between the new bulbs and what everyone has in stock.
I have a feeling vendors are going to have inventory of the bad bulbs and will not be able to sell them unless the mfg replaces them with the new style.
And yes, it sounds like Toshiba replaced the bad bulbs with another bad bulb and they know the replacement will blow, thus the need to send out a new and improved bulb to those with a replacement.
Good going Toshiba! Way to step up and make the customer happy. Thanks again.

It's not the TV. I have the same issue with my 4 year old Sony CRT RPTV and my HD-Tivo. I am also using component and on my TV when I fire it up sometimes I have a greenish scrolling mess that only goes away with an input change and change back. Wether it is the HD-Tivo box or just a fault of the technolodgy, I don't know.

I would make sure that all the settings for the TVGOS are turned off. Just my 0.02 cents. ;)
[I'm usually pretty good about not cross-posting, but this note got lost in another thread, and I'm sure someone here must know something. So I'll try one more time.]
I recall this sort of problem was reported somewhere on AVS at least once before.
I've owned my 62HM195 for a couple weeks now. Here's the problem:
Tune to a channel (or test pattern) with a light background. Look at the lower right quadrant of the screen. A diagonal streak, apparently lighter than the rest of the background, emanates from near the lower right corner pointing towards the center of the screen. I did not notice this initially, but once noticed I can now see it, very faintly, in almost any light program material.
An additional, possibly related, fact:
Screen geometry test patterns on DVE show that the screen is very, very slightly UNDERscanned on the right edge.
My guess is that it is some kind of internal reflection or refraction or leak of light into the image rendering path. My hope is that a small adjustment to correct whatever misalignment causes the underscan will also fix the streak.
Has anyone else seen this issue? If so, have you noticed the same (possibly coincidental) correspondence with an underscan?
Thanks for any info!

I always enjoy your posts. They are informative and sometimes (intentionally) funny.
I do not want to argue with you about anything. I only want to suggest that you consider not cross-posting the same note to multiple threads.
I subscribe to all the threads concerning Toshiba DLP TVs. I suspect you do too. I expect nearly all serious readers of AVS subscribe to all the threads in their areas of interest.
One post is enough. Just pick the thread that most closely matches your topic, or pick one at random among threads that all seem to touch on it.
Give this suggestion some consideration, or not. But like I said I'm not looking for an argument. Thanks again for your informative contributions.So.........I guess you see the occasional need to cross post. Don't be so quick to judge. BTW......What were you looking for,an apology?
tony1010 03-29-06, 09:40 PM I've had a 62hm195 since Dec. the lamp has about 915 hours on it. The past few days I've been noticing my picture getting progressively darker. If I put the lamp on high power it helps some, but every day it seems to get a little darker and now there is a very slight flickering sometimes (from light to dark). I'm fairly certain the bulb is about to go from reading about other's experiences for the last few months.
I called Toshiba and the tech agreed it is most probably the lamp, but I can't get another on sent till it blows. For those of you that had the picture darken before the lamp went, how long did it take for it to go completely. I'm also curious what the tv does when it goes, from what I've heard it's a black screen, yellow blinking light and the sound still works? This info might be useful just in case someone wanted to get the new lamp sent out before the current one actually blows. (after spending $3k on a tv less than 4 months ago, who wants to be without a tv for a week) :)
PS This is a great set, would still purchase it again in a heartbeat.
smitzinok 03-30-06, 01:20 AM my 56HM195 lamp went about 10 days after I noticed it was getting dark. I thought it was me not the TV. I had just got new glasses.................
I would say about a week here as well. Once I heard there were lamp issues, I turned my on high. I wanted it to blow sooner than later.
As far as calling, and pretending its out they want you to send back the old one. So while you might get them to "send" you a new one, you'll eventually need to send the other one back. I am not sure how long they give before its an issue.
nbdyspl 03-30-06, 08:24 PM Pretty cool stuff and thanks again to Toshiba I dont see any other company giving away free bulbs and admitting that there was a problem.I got my letter today and all I have to say is thank you toshiba for honoring warranty and going beyond it as well!!!!!!!!!!

kstevens69 04-03-06, 05:00 PM Just in case anyone is interested, my lamp started dimming this last weekend. I called up Toshiba to see if they would ship me one of the new ones to try to prevent me being without my TV. They agreed to and I should have it in 3-4 days. Hopefully my lamp will hold out that long.

kfredericks 04-04-06, 01:52 PM Anyone here have an Xbox 360? If so, is it better to set the 360 to 1080i or 720p, given that its native resolution is 720p? Basically, either I have the Xbox scale from 720 to 1080 and interlace the image followed by the Toshiba deinterlacing it... or I output in 720p and let the Toshiba simply scale to 1080p. It sounds like the the choice with the fewer steps would render the best results. But if the Toshiba scales 720 poorly, then perhaps I should go the other way. Any experience?
Whats native resolultion is 720pm. The TV's native resolution is 1080p. The xbox's resolutions is whatever you set it at. Games either support the 1080i or 720p. I have tried both as far as the xbox 360 is concered. I have mine set at 1080i so all the TV has to do is deinterelace. No scaling needed.

The Xbox 360 has a scaler built-in, and as you said, will output in whatever format you wish. But the source resolution is 720p. Yes, developers have the option of supporting 1080i natively, but all available information indicates that 1080i support will be a meager exception, and that you can pretty much count on all games being rendered at 720p.
That being said, my question is, is it better for the 360 to scale and interlace and for the Toshiba to then deinterlace, or is it better for the 360 to do nothing, and the Toshiba just does the scaling.

Good question, I've tried several games at 720 and then 1080i for a while. I've found that CoD and Oblivion look better in 1080i , the other 6 or so games I have seem to display better with the 360 set to 720p. A couple of games I can't tell any difference at all and the difference isn't too significant with the rest. I think it's a matter of personal taste and you just have to take a look at each individual game in both resolutions to decide, but 720 seems to work well for all (that I've treid anyway).
My tv is a 62hm195 btw.
ISpaulding 04-07-06, 01:53 AM From reading the nost recent threads, Aside from the crackling of the TV set, I see that the biggest problem from the 62HM195 has been the premature blowing of the bulb. Looks like I will purchase this TV and the mathcing stand next week. Thanks for the information.
For all you 360 owners
When you play on your set do you use the dynamic contrast? I play quite a bit and have found that the dark scenes are too dark and light scenes too bright on certain games. I have tried to play with the video settings but haven't found very satisfactory results. Anyone have any suggestions on settings? Anyone else notice anything similar?
bkazepis 04-07-06, 08:16 AM Well. I have become a statistic. :( I was on my way home from work and my wife calls me to tell me she heard a pop noise and the two LED's were illuminated with no picture.
Called Tosh and they will be shipping a "new and improved" bulb to me 2 day FedEx. I am not without a TV as I purchased a spare BUT its got to be one of the defective batch so it will only be a pinch hitter for me while I await the new bulb.
I would be freaking out if I didnt have the extra bulb though....
62HM195 purchased last week of December 2005....3 months old...prob about 500 hours on the bulb....
I was looking through the forums, and searching as well. Did anyone find a good way to calibrate the d*tv feed over hdmi. I know I could "copy" the setting for the oppo on the other hdmi, but seems like it may not be as accurate.
bruin95 04-08-06, 06:36 PM Did anyone find a good way to calibrate the d*tv feed over hdmi.
Yes. Get a professional calibration done by a certified ISF tech. Other than that, you'll basically have to live with what you have now, as far as PQ goes.
Toshibaflicker 04-09-06, 01:26 AM Hi all,
I got my Toshiba 62hm195 television today. The tv looks fine. Simple, old, coax, cable connection via antenna 1. Will update that later. Now for the problems. I connected both my old toshiba dvd player and my neo digits 2085 player via component video cable to my toshiba television. Component video out from player to component video in on my television. Colors are absolutely scrambled and appear tinted, flickery etc. I tried the same component cable on both players. The resolution of these players on this tv is worse than on my vanilla tv. Is the cable defective or am I doing something wrong? Like I said, the tv using cable tv looks fine. The dvds look like crap through this component video cable. Audio is just fine through dvd. These video problems are consistent on both players. Can I fix this someone or do I need to call toshiba? Please help if you can. Thanks.

Sounds like you have the connections all mixed up. Make sure that you have red going to red, green to green, and blue to blue. If not, you would see what you're describing. If you have the cables connected correctly, try different ones. If the problems persist, call Toshiba. DVD's look fantastic on this set. There is no reason why yours should be any different, unless your DVD player just plain sucks.
What a difference the last two or three weeks have made in this and other Toshiba threads.
cjlawson 04-11-06, 11:03 AM I own the 62hm195. Out of the box the settings where way off. I have now calibrated it real close to 6500K using the service menu adjustments.
Does any one else know if there are any other adjustments in the service menu I can do to calibrate this tv?

TorontoDoug 04-12-06, 04:14 PM Nah you don't need a professional calibration ... just turn off torch mode, leave the dynamic black or whatever they call it, off .... and reduce most of the settings.
Mine looks like you're looking through a window .. totally real and natural looking. If I can remember, I'll post my settings when I'm home tonight.
The dynamic black thing does give it a little more 'punch' .. but I prefer the 'gee it's like I'm looking through a window' look. You might like it punchy.
Had it for 3 months, and I'm still bowled over by the PQ of some upconverted DVDs, and some HD programming ... like The Masters ... wow ...
Michael TLV 04-12-06, 05:07 PM Greetings
Not much in the service menu other than grayscale controls and some of the user stuff.
Professional calibration only becomes important if you desire to have more accurate colors than what it is out of the box. (it is no where near accurate even in the warm temp setting.) If you don't care about color accuracy ... then professional calibration is something you need not consider.
Regards
TorontoDoug 04-12-06, 09:37 PM For what it is worth to anyone, here are the settings that I use for my 56HM195 .. they suit me. Torch off, dynamic contrast off, color temp = medium, dark room always.
Contrast = 50
Brightness = 54
Color = 38
Tint = -7
Sharpness = 10
That's for cable. My DVD settings are slightly different but very close to these.

TorontoDoug 04-12-06, 10:43 PM Couldn't be happier. Stunning PQ. Jaws drop when friends pop over.
I'm only sorry I didn't at least consider the 62 incher. I have the 56 incher, and sit about 9 feet away, but the PQ is so good and steady I could sit 6 feet away and see no blemishes. Although 56" looked huge at first, now I'm used to it and wish it was bigger :-). You could sit 9' away from a 62" model, no problems.
Never have seen a rainbow. Zero SDE of course. The only PQ flaw, and I have learned to ignore it, is SSE. That used to drive me nuts, but now I rarely notice it. But if you're a hockey fan, it might bother you.
I like my 62HM195. I do see rainbows -- all the time. But that seems to be a very idiosyncratic problem. Also, there is some kind of light leak or reflection/refraction that causes light diagonal streaks from the lower corners toward the center, but these are only obvious when the lower half of the screen has a light-colored, plain image. Overall, brilliant image quality, very enjoyable.

Dude I have seen you double post before.
Traveler62 04-13-06, 10:48 AM To add my experience with the 62HM195, I am very satisfied with it. The picture is awesome. I have had it a little over a month. There are no complaints. I use a 5 year old Yamaha DVD player at 480i and the 62HM195 conversion makes the picture look very close to HD. The only little thing about it is I wish Toshiba had a one button function to toggle between low and high lamp settings. Even better yet would be to have a light level sensor built-in and have 3 selections: high, low & auto. I was going to get a Harmony 880 Remote, but saw the Harmony 520 for much less and it has been great. Took some time to get the settings right, but now my wife and son can go from one source to another and the whole A/V system changes with one button.
We sit 12 feet away from the set and that seems about right. Sitting any closer, I start noticing the ice crystal look (don't know the official name for it) of the glare coating, but could probably get used to it. I have occasionally noticed rainbows if my eyes move from side to side too quick.
I think it is still the best 1080P for the money.

I've had the 56HM195 for 2 months now and I agree with you, it's got the best PQ I've seen and even from much more expensive TV sets. However I'm not sure I'd go for the 62 inch model. I sit at 10 feet and while some programs (like HD Discovery and PBS) would allow me to sit closer, I sure wouldn't watch some others like hockey games or any other bright white stuff any closer because you really start to see the actual screen face plate.
I only have one grievance with that set, it's the fan noise. It becomes background noise after a while but it still bothers me even after 2 months.

It's called Silk Screen Effect. SSE for short.
I sit about nine feet from my 62HM195. I watched some of a HD hockey game last night just to check the SSE on all that white. It is very easy for me to simply not choose to see it. If I had it to do again, I'd have gotten the 72. (I should add that -- when I still went out to movies -- I was a "no, we have to sit closer!" type.)

Yea I only sit about 8 or 9 feet from my 62hm195 and it looks fine to me, if I could do it again I would probably also go with th 72". The first few days the tv looked way to big but after that it seems pretty much a perfect size for my distance. I'm very glad I did not go with the 52" (which I almost did). I think the the bigger the screen the more immersive it feels and these tv's have such great pictures the size doesn't degrade the quality that much (with a good signal anyway).

Looking at the spec sheets on the Toshiba website, it looks like the HM196 is an improvement on the MX195:
- Both the HM195 and MX195 uses the xHD4 DLP chip which has 960 x 1080 mirrors and wobulated to provide 1080p. The HM196 uses the newer xHD5 chip which appears to have the full 1920 x 1080 mirrors (no wobulation).
- The MX195 has the THINC RJ-45 ethernet port to connect the TV to your home LAN to access picture or MP3 files (HM195 didn't). The HM196 also has that.
Those appear to be the biggest differences.

The new chip would imply a new light engine... new processing and maybe... 1080p HDMI input? :)

magredc5 04-18-06, 09:14 AM The new chip would imply a new light engine... new processing and maybe... 1080p HDMI input? :)
Don
Nope - spec sheet doesn't show 1080p input.
PeteCIS 04-18-06, 02:12 PM Almost everything has been said both for and against having 1080p inputs of any kind so I can be very brief here regarding that topic.
Sony has said that the PS3 will have 2 HDMI outputs both capable of outputting 1080p. Thus, it seems that any hard core gamer interested in the PS3 will not want to purchase any TV that doesn't support 1080p over HDMI. For anyone else, you probably could care less.
I got a quote from ps3land d.o.t com that says:
"Not only will 1080p be supported by the system, but that this is considered the standard resolution for the system. Every game for the system will be in incredible HD."
I'm still not sure how much stock I put in Sony's PS3 statements given their past history. Quoting a source doesn't make me instantly credible, but at least it shows I didn't make it up out of thin air ;-)
With that said, does anyone have some thoughts to share about the 72HM196 vs the 72HM195 model?
It seems to me that the main differences are:
XX195's use the xHD4 chip
HM196 uses the xHD5 chip
HM196 support full 1920x1080 (no wobulation)
xx195 only supports 960x1080 (wobulated to provide 1080p)
HM196 looks to have options more like the HX195 (Ethernet, etc.)
Can anyone share some additional insights?
I currently own the Hitachi 65WX20B (65" Rear Projection HDTV) which i got about 4 years ago when it was brand new. I expect that any DLP in the quality range of the ones I've been looking at will probably blow this one away? I would love some comments on that. Try not to flame me too hard about my current TV though :-) It's served me well and I have no real complaints. But that doesn't mean I just don't know what I am missing either!
<EDIT>
I probably should have mentioned that magredc5 already said the things that I bulleted a few posts up. I've looked around and haven't found anything else important to add to the list.

PeteCIS 04-19-06, 06:30 PM I asked Toshiba about whether any models support 1080p over HDMI.
I originally sent an e-mail via the Toshiba customer service web form and they replied telling me to call their telephone customer server.
I called Toshiba's customer service telephone number and asked which models support 1080p over HDMI and was told "If the literature says the TV supports a 1080p input then it is supported over HDMI".
Of course, this is a near useless answer since I can't seem to find anything on their website that talks about the inputs except for how many of each there are on the unit.
As of 4/19/2006 they seem to have taken down all the XXHM196 web pages. 72HM196 & 62HM196 still appear in their search results, but the pages no longer exist! What gives? Both pages were there just yesterday.
Johnny Canuck1 04-23-06, 10:12 PM I have had a Toshiba 62MX195 since December 2005 (with about 1000 hours of lamp life used) so I'll share my experiences (Btw, my Toshiba DOES qualify for the 2 year extended lamp warranty from Toshiba but I haven't had any problems ... yet...)
HDMI1: Motorola 6412 HD-PVR Box. PQ on analog channels is poor (due to the Motorola box not the Toshiba TV) BUT PQ on the HD channels, in particular PBS is outstanding.
HDMI2: Bell ExpressVu 9200 HD PVR. PQ on Analog channels is pretty good. PQ on the HD channels varies greatly but on PBS , Discovery HD, and Oasis it is OUTSTANDING. It's like looking through a friggin window.
ABC and TSN HD sporting events look good.
Component Video 1: Xbox 360 set at 1080i. HD gaming goodness, the quality of the graphics is outstanding, even though it is only through component video.
In the near future, I want to hook up a HTPC to my sets Component Video 2 (Since I have an ATI all-in-wonder 850XT) but I don't have the time to do this right now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The only glitch I find is with the BEV 9200 Receiver sometimes on the HiDef channels the screen will turn blank (for a second) then go back every 10-30 mins or so. It only seems to happen on my BEV 9200 PVR (Dishnetwork uses the same receiver). Any thoughts on this? [I have NEVER upgraded the TV's firmware... should I get an upgrade to maybe cure this?]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All in all, I am EXTREMELY happy with this TV. While the lamp thing potentially worries me, I carefully scrutinzed the Sony SXRD and Samsung 1080p model, and I thought the Toshiba was the least worst of the 3 (not to mention priced the best) and my entire family is happy, but most importantly I'm HAPPY!
A Harmony 880 remote though made the system easy to use for the entire family.
Hi-
Does Anybody Have Any Info Or Links Regarding Any New 1080p Toshiba Tv's?
Thanks
TorontoDoug 04-24-06, 01:58 PM I got my 56MX195 primarily for watching a large DVD collection. I use an upconverting Sony DVD player via HDMI, the set is properly calibrated for my eye (does look like looking through a window), and the DVD PQ is eyepopping, for good transfers. When a broadcast cable HD movie is playing, I will sync with the DVD, and I can literally see no difference in PQ ... so IMHO, the High Def DVD formats offer me nothing, although I concede they might on a larger screen.
ncarlitos 04-24-06, 07:52 PM total newbie in the toshiba 1080p dlp world... 72mx195 will be delivered approximately 2-3 weeks from now and Im just wondering how these units are compared to the JVC HD-ILA and th MITSU 72927? I was going for the mitsu but I decided to cut my budget and decided to get two 32" Sony Bravia's for my girls (straight A students). my local VIDEO ONLY store gave it to me for 4300 and 1300 for the bravia's. I compared the specs and they were somewhat similar with the exception of the internal dvr. I hope I made the right choice. any comment will be highly appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

I cannot speak about the specific TV or Receiver, but I can say that my local HD Channel 4 coming over my Bedroom Panasonic LCD HDTV via the new DirecTV HR10 HDTV Receiver I see the same problem of the screen going black for a couple seconds. I lose sound as well at this time. It doesn't happen on any other channels so I don't blame the TV for it. I think my problem is every 20 minutes or so.
Not sure if this info applies, but can't hurt to share a similar experience. :-)

Well, unless you're willing to wait a while you're best bet is to stick with the 195. I downloaded (and still have) the spec sheet for the 196 from the Toshiba Website. I also bookmarked the 72HMm196, 72HM195 & 72HX195 websites. Unfortunately the website has been removed. I wonder if this indicates a delay in the release? The 62HM196 website has also been removed.
Anyway, the biggest positive thing I see is that the 196 uses a full 1920x1080 xHD5 chip meaning no wobulation and none of the issues people say they see with wobulation.
The one drawback (but only for people who care) is that the 196 doesn't appear to support 1080p over HDMI.
If I wasn't so picky about getting something that supports 1080p over HDMI then I am fairly certain this would be the set that I buy.
The spec sheet does say: "Preliminary Specifications Subject to Change" though, so who knows what could happen.
EDIT
Feel free to PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send over the spec sheet

I'm quite pleased with my 62HM195. My only major regret is that I didn't get the 72.
To complete the story, I do have a couple of issues with the TV.
Despite everything I tried at various showrooms, I never saw a single rainbow on any DLP TV. I figured I was among the immune. Nope. At home, I see them all the time. It is not too hard to avoid the kind of quick glances off-screen that elicit them, but they are there.
Also, my particular TV has a defect that at least one other poster here has noticed -- light diagonal streaks that start near the bottom corners of the screen. These show up when the image is fairly light and quite uniform. For example, the streaks will appear on a nearly white image or on a grassy stadium floor. It was initially hard to notice, but once seen, it becomes quite irritating. I expect I will have to call Toshiba soon for some warranty maintenance. It is certainly some kind of refracted or reflected internal light leak.
The 62HM195's image is gorgeous. I'm sure you'll go through the stage of watching TV shows about beavers, caves, Mario Andretti or arctic ice melting (yes, ice melting -- a tiny bit more exciting than paint drying), just because they're so frigging pretty. Have fun!

I had my LE replaced the first week I had it for that very problem. You have a tech look at it and he will measure it,report to TCS and they will send a new LE to the tech's shop. Mine took 5 days to receive. Watched it while waiting for 2nd call, at home, installed new LE in about 45 mins. If quick start is activated,It will really show up in a dark setting when you turn unit off.The few minutes that the lamp is on low. Mine were rectangular in shape, 3 in all. Never moved. I saw this the first time I watched a movie when the credits started rolling. All black settings, it was very disturbing. Good luck............

I've noticed the same thing on my display. I'ts about 2 inches wide and runs from the bottom right corner of the screen up to almost the middle. It only shows up when the screen is mostly one color and bright (most noticeable on hockey games but unlike you I don't see it at all when it's all black).
I thought the screen was just dirty and since the manual stated that you should only use a dry cloth to clean it I contacted Toshiba to find out how to clean the screen more effectively. Unfortunately they only have a standard answer : You should only use a dry lint free cloth.... I tried it and it didn't make any difference. Anyway, wheter I decide to call in for service or not I still have to find out a way to clean that screen since I have a cat who likes to catch racing cars and we smoke in our house.
AV, your problem seems to be exactly like mine. I'm still reluctant to call Toshiba for fear they will mess it up worse changing out the light engine. I'm certain this is some kind of internal reflection/refraction and it may just as likely be caused by some problem in the optical path outside the light engine as inside it. But I'll have to call and see what they say. Someday soon.... :)
mikeyari 05-03-06, 06:24 PM Ohh. noo....My lamp blew thursday...I recieved t today, replaced it and the tv still doesn`t work?
Nooooooo!!!! I have 62hm195 and the blue just blinks on and off while the yellow light states on for about 3 blinks of the blue light then shuts off again.
I`ve unplugged it, I`ve tried tuning it on and off and replacing the bulb with tv off and unpluuged.....still just blinking lights!
I`m starting to toshiba just made cheap tv`s.
4 months and this tv is behaving like it`s 10 years old!!!
I guess I`ll have to be back on the phone again!!!!
I had and rca hdtv that died in 11 months and I thought it was the cheapest set in the world!
My last tv was a Mitsubishi 65" hdtv....had it for 4 years never had to make one service call! sold the tv for $1200.00after 4 years of use.
Now 4 months and I`m already on my second service call? Customer service was nice, but nice won`t make up for seemingly cheap products.

Well, wife just turned white as a sheet as she told me of the popping of the lamp. Called TCS,had me take it out while online, apologized profusely about all the problems I've had,(cc issues, new LE, 5 mos. old the 10th) said they would replace my set if I had anymore problems. I said "How about now" he laughed and said "if you have anymore". Said the new lamps have never been out of stock. Shipping out today hopefully, said look for it Friday,if not, then MONDAY!!!!!
As a side note TCS told me this AUTHORIZED Tosh parts seller has the LATEST lamps at this price..........http://www.tritronicsinc.com/cgi-bin/onramp.exe?pgm=itemdet_cs.bbx&id=23311153&custnum=RETAIL&password=1146707014
Richard in SF 05-09-06, 12:18 AM To a person who has been following the Sammy threads for a few months, this seems pretty dead. I 'm about ready for a 1080p Sammy, but would like to know if there is a guess when the Toshiba 196s will be out. I was giving serious thought to a 195, but didn't think I could look at the grey/silver cabinet on the 195. Is there any info on the styling/color of the 196s?
tsandtsand 05-09-06, 03:05 PM Greetings,
I have a out of the ordinary situation that would benefit from current Toshiba owners experience.
I have the opportunity to receive a brand new 62HM195 via my United frequent flyer account (yes, I am not home that often).
The airline will offer the TV, free delivery (no setup), no stand and no extended warranty.
My questions are as follows:
Option 1
*Would anyone recommend that I wait for new HM/MX 196 models? United will not allow me to select items, but did upgrade this selection from the 62HM95 model this month to the 62HM195. I guess they ran out of the 95'!? This "merchandise in lieu of miles" promotion is scheduled to run until December 2006. Unfortunately I read on the forum that the 196 models were pulled from Toshiba's website so we don't know how long of wait I would have.
If I don't wait, where can I get a reasonable priced Extended warranty? Toshiba offers a 1 year (1 extra for a total of 2) extended warranty for about $450. 2-3 years are really expensive. Note that I have read bad things about some independent EW companies here on AVSForum so I am wary.
Option 2
*Have the delivery people move the boxed 62hm195 TV into my heated garage and sell it "New in the Box" on Ebay or on this Forum and then buy either the 72MX195 or even a new 2006 SXRD 60 inch Sony XRB? I have 17 ft of distance to the TV so the 72" seems like a better idea, but I have read (subjective I know) that the Sony (LCoS) beats the new (DLPs) HP, Samsung and the Toshibas?
Sound and Vision magazine just published the above mentioned review of LCoS and DLP. Sorry I can't post the URL as I am too junior of a member at this time.
Additionally I know that LED lights will soon replace the lamps and the new TI light engines in the 196 models are thought to be more superior to the 195s etc etc.
Indecision, Indecision, Analysis Paralysis!
Thanks for you ideas and thoughts in advance!

No matter what you buy in terms of 'state of the art electronic device' will be obsolete whithin 2-4 years. So, you look at the device and if you like it and it suits your needs you buy it, if you can afford it of course.
If you wait for technology to settle down so you can make your choice then you'll still be looking for the perfect TV in 2020.
Hidef Lifestyle, who is a power buy vendor on this forum for the new Toshiba HD dvd player is now showing the item in stock NOW for a very attractive price!!
Interesting that no one else seems to have it in stock, nor does Toshiba even have the information on their web site anymore. I think hideflifestyle either has a typo on their web page or they are just trolling for orders and will give you the run-around once you place the order.
What a great problem to have! My two cents... wait until the last minute and get whatever state of the art TV is being offered. At that point in time, you can choose to keep it for yourself or resell it. Either way, you win.
More of my two cents....as for reselling the TV, I'm sure you'll find a buyer but I think it might prove difficult. I personally wouldn't consider buying a "New in the Box" TV for fear of warranty transfer issues, DOA, etc.

Additionally I know that LED lights will soon replace the lamps and the new TI light engines in the 196 models are thought to be more superior to the 195s etc etc.
Indecision, Indecision, Analysis Paralysis!
Thanks for you ideas and thoughts in advance!
f300v10 05-10-06, 01:26 PM Anyway, the biggest positive thing I see is that the 196 uses a full 1920x1080 xHD5 chip meaning no wobulation and none of the issues people say they see with wobulation.
The one drawback (but only for people who care) is that the 196 doesn't appear to support 1080p over HDMI.
EDIT
Feel free to PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send over the spec sheet
END EDIT
Just to be clear, the xHD5 chip is a wobulation chip. The only 1080P DLP chip that does not use wobulation has so far only been seen in front projectors, and none of those are shipping yet. The xHD5 is a new smaller version of the previous xHD4. The xHD5 is .65 inches diagonal, while the xHD4 was .8 inches. The mirror count on the two chips is identical, 1080x960.
As for lack of 1080P input support, I think Toshiba is making a big mistake on that. It may have to due with the fact the Toshibas HD-DVD players currently only support up to 1080i output.
magredc5 05-10-06, 01:46 PM Just to be clear, the xHD5 chip is a wobulation chip. .
Are you sure about that? Although there is limited available data on the xHD5 chip, the information that is available indicates it's a full 1080x1920 DMD (hence no wobulation).

I agree, the information I got directly from Toshiba said the xHD5 is a true 1080x1920 chip.
I would be angry with Toshiba if I found out otherwise. Haven't bought one yet, but I'd still be angry for being misled.
But, I claim no first hand knowledge and can't seem to find much real information on the web about it.
AVSPHR34K 05-10-06, 04:23 PM When in bloddy hell will I see a TV w/ HDMI 1.3 and 10, 12, or 14 bit processing w/ 1080P inputs? =(
Anyone know?
Steveo1717 05-10-06, 09:52 PM Ok fellas, a couple more things about these diagonal shadow lines...
(First off I've actually found one now that's LIGHTER than the rest of the picture...go figure)
Anyway, bulb blew a few weeks ago, so I replaced it with a new one, and to my surprise, the lines got MUCH better. Still there though. What I can't figure out is why the lines are in different spots now (ie different corners) than they were with the last bulb. How could the bulb be causing these lines? I thought maybe it was the orientation of the bulb to the LE, and that a new bulb would probably sit in its housing *slightly* different than the previous bulb, but that's really just pulling **** outta my ass. Not sure on that one.
So even with a 2nd LE in the tv...which i got replaced 2-3 months ago, the lines are still there. LE #3 arrives in a few days, so MAYBE third times the charm.
One thing I did notice was that when I called up the on screen menu (to alter contrast/sharpness say) there seemed to be a perceivable movement behind the screen to the right (like something was moving out of the way of the light path). I assume there is some kind of filter that moves out of the way when one engages the menus (why that happens, though, is anyones guess). When the menu is off and you're back to the normal picture, there is a movement FROM the right back to the left, like whatever filter is moving back into place...which I guess makes sense.
The REASON i mention this is because with said filter out of the way, these lines are damn near impossible to see. Only when the filter comes back and you're doing normal TV watching do the lines SEEM to come back. Now, mind you, this was just a perception, but an accurate one I think.
Moral of the story is, though, that after several months of trying to get the issue resolved, I'm still no closer to an answer. I assume every one else with this problem is the same?
(I should note that Toshiba - at least in Canada - knows about the problem and won't lift a finger to help you...i was fed the line "it's a limitation of the technology, and we feel it's NOT a defect...so therefore no new set)
phew...ok done talking...
My diagonal lines are also lighter than the image. But still they only show up when the image is light and fairly uniform. Also, if the background of the image moves, sometimes that will make the diagonals more obvious.
I am sure that they result from some kind of internal reflection or refraction. I am not at all surprised that replacing the lamp, or doing anything at all to the fine details of alignment of things along the light path, changes the lines a bit.
I'm reluctant to call Toshiba because I expect that they don't know how to fix it. I fear them puttering around inside. I could end up with any number of worse problems -- excessive noise, crappy replacement LE, whatever. Paranoia reigns.
But I do wish it would go away.
Anyone heard when the xx96s will be available? Interesting that Toshiba pulled the pages from their site. Maybe it's a case of good news and they are making some changes to the design.
Steveo1717 05-10-06, 11:13 PM Yep...mine are noticeable in exactly the same instances. Hockey games on HD, for instance, when there's movement across a bright white ice surface, are when they're the most noticeable.
And I would bet that, for sure, Tosh doesn't know how to fix it. Or worse, and probably even more likely, they know what the problem is and COULD fix it, but it would require a major overhaul of the LE. In other words, future generations of Tosh TVs in all likelihood won't have this trouble. doh.
Anyway, my advice to everyone with the problem is don't let paranoia reign. Somewhere, sometime, with enough persistance, a workaround might be found.
Or can I just get my money back and buy a Samsung 1080p? :)
Sure, you can buy a Samsung 1080p for another $600 or $700 :). I saw the latest one and it doesn't look too bad, but I still see quite a bit of blocking in fast motion, which I think is a result of the 10 bit processing. The 12 bit in the Toshiba should do better (or 14 bit internal, whatever the hell that means since what you will see is the lowest common denomenator). Two bits actually adds quite a bit of gradation - 4096 versus 1024.
f300v10 05-11-06, 09:50 AM Are you sure about that? Although there is limited available data on the xHD5 chip, the information that is available indicates it's a full 1080x1920 DMD (hence no wobulation).
I am absolutly 100% sure on this. The xHD5 is used in the 2006 HL-S series Samsung DLP's. I have seen 4 of these sets, and on all of them you can see the diamond pattern used on all wobulated chips, not the square pattern from the non-wobulated chips, like the HD2 or HD2+ 720P chips (which is what my set uses). No RP DLP 1080P yet announced is using the brand new, not yet shipping full 1080P non-wobulated chip.
Here is the DLP press release from Jan. 2006, anouncing the xHD5 chips, refered to here as the .65” 1080p DLP chip.
http://dlp.com/about_dlp/about_dlp_press_release.asp?id=1281
The relevent quote:
"To continue offering consumers the best visual experience at an affordable price, TI is introducing two new chipsets: the .45” 720p DLP chip and the .65” 1080p DLP chip. Both chipsets feature BrilliantColor™ technology optimized for DLP HDTV applications to extend DLP color processing from 3 colors up to 6 colors, increasing the number of producible color shades to an astonishing 200 trillion, and providing an up to 50% total screen brightness increase. This translates to incredible new levels of color saturation and overall image enhancement from very affordable chipsets, allowing manufacturers to maintain the DLP HDTV price advantage on large screen TVs for years to come."
The full 1080P non wobulated chip is .95", not .65"

Unlike you, my diagonal lines are darker than the picture. But for some reason it's getting better and better with time???? And it's not that I get used to it because usually when I get annoyed by something I tend to pay a lot more attention to it. Maybe the lamp is about to blow... :(

You hit it right on the head. I too have the diagonal streak on my set and it virtually disappeared. About two weeks later, the bulb blew. So get ready. ;)
I have a dumb question -- does anyone NOT have diagonal streaks?
(Again, they -- at least mine -- start near the bottom corners and radiate inward toward the screen center. They are lighter than the screen image -- for some they are darker -- and they show up against light backgrounds, sometimes with images that have particular motions that highlight them. The best way to see them is on a white test screen, hockey games or travel shows with certain underwater shots.)
Thanks.

That's a great price for a nonexistent product. I'd be careful of hideflifestyle since they show a product in stock even though it hasn't even been distributed by the manufacturer yet!!

Not the HM196 that Fry's has but the HM195 for $2797, is this still a good price or should I wait for the HM196?
I got mine online for a lot less two months ago. And then there's the added advantage of not dealing with Fry's.
Well this is my first post on the forum. I've gone through 47 pages of this thread over the last week.......wow.
I just wanted to know if anyone has any info yet on the HM196 or MX196.
I've been looking at the Toshibas for a while and recently found out that a friend works there....long story short I got pricing and the list he gave me had the 196's on it.
Sooo this has become a new option for me to look at but I can't find any info online.

Agree. The HM66 models are 720p (HD5 DMD) and the HM196 are 1080p (xHD5 DMD). Although the initial info claimed that the HM196 had full 1080 x 1920 mirrors, there's still not enough info to confirm that.
bruin95 05-16-06, 02:37 AM Well, today I received my little gift from Toshiba, one of their brand spanking "new and improved bulbs" as per the letter they sent out last month. Wonder if anyone else has received theirs yet? The bulb probably has a long long wait to be "tested" as the bulb I purchased in February is still going strong and my first back-up bulb (one that Toshiba took two months to send me, hence having to PAY for one) is next in line to go in. If everything goes well, I may not have to buy another bulb for this TV for a couple of years. (fingers crossed)

To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update.
Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that the lamp life of some lamps in a limited number of 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges may be less than our expectation. As part of our ongoing commitment to customer service, Toshiba is extending the warranty on the originally-installed lamp in those particular 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges for one additional year (for a total warranty period of two years for the originally-installed lamp) to enable customers with those televisions to obtain a new and improved lamp free of charge if the originally-installed lamp fails. If you own one of the DLP television models listed below, please enter your serial number in the box below to determine if your particular DLP television qualifies for this extended warranty. The serial number can be located on the back panel of the television. Be assured that Toshiba DLP televisions are of the highest quality and this update regards a limited issue.

enmoco - YOUR RIGHT!!!
I just talked to Customer Support and the 2-Year Warranty ONLY Applies to the Original Installed Lamp.
So, ... the NEW Re-Designed Lamp Warranty will be either ...
a) 180 days (for HDTV's no longer under MFG. Warranty)
or
b) MFG. 1-Year Lamp Warranty
I bought and received my HDTV on Feb. 1, 2006, so my NEW Re-Designed Lamp is now under my MFG. 1-Year Lamp Warranty which will expire on Feb. 1, 2007!

It was to confirm what Don1959 wrote in another thread! Thanks Don1959 for posting your comments again!

I'm the latest victim. Less than 500 hours of low power only viewing. Picture went dim yesterday and bulb popped today. My 56MX195 is not even one of the sets whose bulb warranty has been extended for year. Toshiba better rethink the serial number ranges that are being covered.

My e-mail to Toshiba:
Hello,
A number of weeks ago I looked at the 71HM196 on your website. I also downloaded the spec sheet and still have it on my computer. However, I went back to your website and now the 196 has been completely removed. I cannot find the web page, it is not listed under the DLP models with the 71HM195 & 72MX195, and I cannot find anything when I do a search.
Can you please tell me if this model has been pulled from production and why the data has been pulled from the website?

Thanks for writing!
We appreciate your interest in Toshiba.
Unfortunately, at this time, we do not have information on our upcoming line. However, please feel free to check our site periodically at www.toshiba.com/tacp/news.html for any further updates.

Got my "new and improved" replacement lamp from Toshiba today. It has a blue dot on the outside of the box by the serial number. The letter included with the lamp says this--"...please note that the enclosed lamp has a limited warranty of 180 days. Because we are encouraging you to continue using your current lamp, the 180 warranty on the enclosed lamp will not begin until the date that we receive the originally-installed, non-functioning lamp back from you." I don't know if everyone is getting this letter, or just those of us who are already on our 2nd lamp.
As a side note, while I was waiting the 1st replacement lamp from Toshiba, I bought one from alltvlamps.com. It failed fairly quickly, but they sent a replacement lamp with no hassle at all. It has a blue dot too! The manufacture date on it is 3-20-06 and the date on the one from Toshiba is 3-27-06. I guess I might be the proud owner of 2 "new and improved" Lamps. :D

Supposed to go to those whose initial replacement lamp was from the troubled lot. And in some cases, even a third "bad" lamp. That is why the lamp has the lesser warranty. Its intention is to appease the customer for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the reply. If the blue dot theory doesn't hold up, I guess that could mean that Toshiba sent me an "old" replacement lamp. The first letter said that this lamp would be "new and improved" (their words). I cannot detect any physical difference between this new lamp and the old one. The blue dot was not on the first replacement lamp box I got from alltvlamps.com, so I guess I'll just stay tuned for further info. I know it's mentioned all the time, but I really appreciate you guys. This forum is such a valuable resource.

Should be o.k.The "letter " lamp should definitely be a new one. I'm not quite sold on the BD issue.Good luck.... :)
magredc5 05-19-06, 11:30 PM I checked tonight on the Toshiba site and my 56HM195 S/N is indeed part of the defective bulb batch. Unfortunately they don't offer to send you a new bulb. You have to wait for the current one to blow and then call them...
Potentially part of the defective bulb batch. It's good to know I have a 2 year warranty on my bulb as well, and although there is a high number of early failures it's not 100% of them.

Potentially? I don't think so anymore.... The reason I first posted is that I kind of noticed that the picture was getting darker but I wasn't sure (might be eye fatigue, old age, etc). But since yesterday the screen went dramatically darker (my wife complained about it today). So I guess I'll just have to wait for it to blow up (I might help it by turning it to 'high mode').

If your picture is getting dimmer, call today for a replacement. It WILL blow shortly.

http://home.wi.rr.com/ragtop262/Toshiba%20Lamp.pdf note the date of letter. Then note the paragraph that says "new and improved lamp " coming"soon". The upper management Tosh CS person I talked with twice...said the new lamps were shipping 04/20/06. My lamp arrived 05/10/06.said it was mfg. on 05/04/06,had NO BLUE DOT.Contrary to what some have posted, I was told new lamps shipping was to be 04/20/06.

Too late.... It blew up tonight.... Three months useage (approximately 450hrs at low light power).
I don't know if it's typical or the TV has other problems but here is the scenario I've seen:
2 months ago: dark streaks radiating from the screen corners.
1 week ago: darks streaks disappeared and light streaks started to appear all over the screen.
4 days ago: display started dimming
today: PAF! actually it was kind of a cool noise when it blew up
I think Toshiba sucks as they know all their defective bulbs are going to blow up enventually so why not a massive recall????
Incidentally, what is the typical shipping delay between the time you report the problem and the actual delivery to your door? I'll discuss this with customer service tomorrow but I'd like to have a ballpark so I can be in a position to argument.
Also, all of you people who have had bulb failures, were you using high or low power mode? It seems to me that all the posts I've seen over the months were involving 'low power' mode and I'm starting to wonder if that's not part of the problem with early bulb failures??? Might just be an impression...
I reported mine on wednesday night and received the bulb on the following monday. The customer service woman told me that they ship everything fedex 2-day. I asked if I could pay extra for overnight and she said no. I would suggest calling ASAP and make suer you have your serial number. I called from work on wdnesday and didn't have the serial so I had to wait until I got home on wednesday night. If I had the number with me I would have had my bulb on friday.
Traveler62 05-22-06, 11:28 PM I joined the darkening picture club over the weekend! The picture now is so dark that I don't bother turning it on. I don't know how loud the pop is when it goes, but don't want my Wife to be scared of it. I did call CS this morning and hope the new bulb arrives by Friday. Hate to think about going all this Memorial Day weekend with no big screen. The guy at customer service said the bulb does not need to pop before you send it back if it was already getting darker. He also mentioned that they have thousands of bulbs in inventory now. I swear I heard him say 15,000. Maybe they will change their policy and send out to everyone who has the old bulb soon if they get enough requests.
The first notice I had that the bulb was going out was during startup some areas on the middle of the screen would look like bubbles getting lighter and darker. This has been going on about a week. So 3 months seems to be the life span of the original bulbs which makes the 2 year bulb warranty pretty much meaningless.

My original bulb is 7 months old with ~1400 hours, so the 2 year warranty is definitely a benefit to me.

Anybody tried the "Monter TV cleaning kit" on their Toshiba DLP screen? Any thoughts on that product?I received that item packaged with my purchase, A nice micro-fiber cloth, a spray bottle of non-alcohol based "anti-static" liquid cleaner. Works very well (we use it on all screens now)I don't know that its worth the twenty or so dollars that it retails for,but hey, IT"S MONSTER CLEAN Woohoo!! :DP.S. Acyually you don't need to use much of the spray at a time, should last quite a while.
Traveler62 05-25-06, 07:59 PM I got the new lamp today and installed it. It could just be perspective, but I swear on the low lamp setting it is brighter than the original lamp on high from day one. The manufacturing date was 2006.04.12 and there is no blue dot anywhere. My time on the old lamp was 438 hours, bought the 62HM195 on 2/21/06. The glass looking part of the filament close to the reflector had a bubble protruding upward on the old bulb.
I saw a post earlier complaining about the price of these lamps and replacing them every 3 months. We should hope that these lamps will last now for 1+ years and the price has gone down to $210 and will likely be down to $150 soon after stock builds. This would put the lamp situation the same as most brands of projection TVs. I know I am thrilled once again! :)

I had the same reaction, but thinking about it I feel that the thing must have been degrading very slowly before taking a dive and finally dying. The reason I'm saying this is that the way my TV is located, when I go down the stairs I look at it at a 75-80 degrees angle. The first month I could watch it from that angle, the second month I had some problem telling what was playing, and the third I could hardly tell if it was on or not.
It's just like eyesight. It degrades slowly and you don't really take notice until you get glasses and see what you've been missing... :)

Since my free replacement lamp from Toshiba had an early build date and a blue dot, do you have any suggestions on what, if anything I should do. I mean I have this new lamp unused in a box, but a growing, sneaking suspicion that it's the same old lamp. Do you think it's worth it to try to get this sorted out, knowing the usual level of knowledge and competence you'll encounter at the CSR level? Thanks.

Traveler62 05-26-06, 11:36 PM I was going through some pictures that I took of the old and new lamps. One difference seems to be that the outside of the reflector on the new lamp appears to be blue. Now I can't be 100% sure about it because it could have been a reflection. I am curious if others with the new lamp have noticed this while installing. I did hear CS talk about the case for the lamp being totally redesigned. I could not see any difference and I would bet that they are recycling the case for the new lamps. The mystery continues.
Another thing is I haven't heard the noise that I thought was the fan. It may be too early to tell, but could the buzzing have come from the lamp?

I just can't see Toshiba distributing old bulbs with fake manufacturing dates (like April 2006 in my case) since they know they only last 3 months!!! I don't know about CS in the US but when I called in they even had a 'phone choice' for bulb replacement and I was directed to a specific phone # (probably a call center somewhere) just for that. So I don't think they would go through all that trouble to send 'known defective bulbs'.
Actually, when I went to exchange the bulb at the service center, the guy told me they started to receive the new bulbs about 2 months ago (and he said they exchanged about 150 so far).
As far as noise is concerned, I didn't see (hear) any difference. However I think it's too bright (even at low power) and 'grid effect' really shows up but on the other hand 'dark/light' streaks are gone.... I stil have to tweak parameters to get it right...

Think what you will, but if you read the letter I posted, they weren't ready as of 03/23/06. It states they will be ready "soon" thereafter. All I'm talking about anyway is this proposed "blue dot" theory that this denotes a "new" lamp. Also didn't see any blue tints to the lamp I received.Good luck all......... :)

Hello....Hello....Hello.....Hello
Big Valley 08-15-06, 02:15 PM I received the Toshiba 1.3.2 update in the mail today and ran it on my 72HM195. I transfered the data to my computer so I could share it with anyone here that wants it.
It is in a self extracting .rar file you need to first extract. It is a small 12MB file you then need to transfer to your own memory card. Just transfer the files directly on to the card. (no sub folders). Turn your TV on, insert the card and the update will begin. When done pull the card and the TV auto shuts off. the TV may turn on and off a few times. When it is done turn your TV off again and unplug it for a 30 sec. Then replug back in and you are done.
Hope this helps and is easier than calling support and trying to get them to send you a update.
Here is the link for the download. You have to wait a few seconds for the download button to appear. http://www.filesend.net/download.php?f=b8ac0a36ff8340df419f85eae76815a5
What Does The 1.3.2 Update Do For The Tv?
Thx
Big Valley 08-15-06, 03:47 PM Hopefully makes my TV Guide On Screen (TVGOS) finally work. Not sure what all it does. I had very old film ware so there have several updates before this one.
I have just read where several people would like to get the update so I just tried to make it quicker for everyone.
Now if someone would give me detailed instructions on how to make a laptop work on my HM195 that would be great. S-video doesn't work, VGA>DVI>HDMI didn't work.
Glad to see someone post on the original Toshiba 1080p thread. seemed like an awful waste to throw away a years worth of posts....... :)
What Does The 1.3.2 Update Do For The Tv?
ThxAddressing various handshake problems, with different cable companies, using different cable cards, was the object of these firmware updates. I (and many others) gave up on local comcast months ago and stayed with STB only. August 1st Conmcast was taken over by Time-Warner here,so,it all begins again! Its mostly cable companies, who don't want you to use a cc in the first place(loss of revenue),who are making it tough on the various mfgs.(not just Toshiba). It will not hurt anything,so,update!..............Good luck all and enjoy FB season!......... :)

spacejamz 08-21-06, 04:25 PM Just picked up an HM116 from Costco yesterday...
I bought a MITSU 62526 two months ago, but it developed a stuttering issue (assuming that the stuttering issue occurs on scenes that have a lot of action/movement and the picture freaks out)...so I brought it back yesterday and picked up the this toshiba.
odd there is nothing on the Toshiba site or even google for this model number. I could sworn a I did a search last week and saw some hits for others here asking for opinions on this set...but no matches on HM116 when I searched today.
has the 1080P engine, 2 HDMI, RJ45 port, 2 component inputs...remote is kinda hideous as it has the gray top/bottom w/ silver sides.
haven't played around with it too much yet, but so far we are impressed w/ the picture (lowered contrast to 65, , lowered sharpness to 0, raised brightness to 60 and changed lamp to lo power), but HD cable (cable card) and the XBOX360 at 1080i all look pretty sweet. will run the DVE disk tonight.
only complaint I have is that about the POP. the left window can only use ANT1/ANT2/VIDEO1/VIDEO2 as input and the right window can only use HDMI1/HDMI2/COLORSTREAM1/COLORSTREAM2 as input. So I can't watch two cable channels at the same time unless I pay for a cable STB and connect it HDMI or component...
I did have a 57H81 that I sold earlier this year...had that TV for nearly 5 years...

That's not a problem with the TV, but rather with the compression of the signal. It looks like the picture is jittery or slightly blocking during rapid panning of the screen or sudden changes in the picture, like when a strobe light is on and the flash is changing the picture instantaneously. This is on HD programming.
My understanding is if your service is over satellite, it's very noticeable. On cable, it's noticeable, but I've noticed on Comcast it's actually improved over the past 6-7 months. The signal with the best picture is Over-The-Air since there is minimal compression.

I hope the "rainbow," effect won't be too bothersom as I just placed an order for this model *56HM195*
I hope Toshibas newly revised bulb holds up well.

That same link is located about 30 pages or so back or something...
I will be pissed if Toshiba releases the 196 series any time really soon.

I can't play half my XBOX360 games because of this... I want to take this TV and smash it to pieces! I want to smash the pieces to pieces!!! I want to breath fresh air into it's puny heartless good for nothing tube!
May it rot in the pits of hell for all eternity. amen

I am still wondering why the hell the 196s aren't on the Toshiba website... I totally would have seen and said, "OH GEE, thats the latest model to look for."
so is everyone still, "whooo, HM195 = FTW." Or are they saying that they are defective and crappy and like, "whooo HM196 FTW."
Of course I guess the latest and greatest is always FTW... But is it worth it?

What would be causing this? I want to get it fixed while the set is under warranty...........

I have had the Toshiba72mx195 for close to a year now, and over the past two weeks the picture on the HDMI setting is too big and cuts of the top and bottom of the screen. People on television now are left with partial heads, and I can no longer see the sports scores at the bottom. The television is set up with a HDTV digital receiver, connected with HDMI cables. The menu picture options do nothing to shrink the picture back into the screen. I am not even given the option of Full screen while in the HDMI input. Can anyone tell me if there is a secret button on the remote that will let me adjust the size of the picture. I noticed on regular cable I can adjust the Picture Scroll, and adjust the picture to fit the screen, but on the HDMI input, this isn't available.
If anyone has an answer I would be appreciative. It's awkward watching shows where the people are missing their heads.

It's awkward watching shows where the people are missing their heads.Check the menu/setup/picture size adjust on your settop box.............. :)
There is most likely a light leak in the light engine. It will need to be replaced. My 56MX195 is currently having it's light engine replaced.
Thanks repsher. I'll look into that asap.
penngray 09-18-06, 12:06 PM I would really like a 70+ TV and The Toshiba 72HM196 is priced so much better then the Sony or the JVCs.
What does the Toshiba do better? If not much then what are some of its bigger problems?
Hans Gruber 09-22-06, 06:59 AM For whatever reason, Toshiba has not received the credit they deserve over the years. Sony has for the past 5 years disgraced their own overrated name with overpriced garbage.
Let's not forget it was Toshiba who in a large part invented the DVD technology and it's Toshiba who is the major backer of what looks to be superior HD DVD.
Today, Sony and Samsung command the attention in the big screen market. By attention, I mena premium priced.
I just setup my cousins brand new Toshiba 72HM195 today. A fantastic value. I've read all the the complaints and positive reviews. I would like to say that many of the negative reviews are from anal retentive obsessive compulsive hypochondriacs. People who create imaginary problems to compensate for their own imperfections and weaknesses.
Toshiba makes highly reliable TV's. My old 55 inch lasted 10 years and still has not had one single problem. My first DVD was a Toshiba purchased in 1997, it busted but was covered by the manufacturers warranty and still works today.
Let's just say that for $2,500 +$250 stand and $200 for shipping on the TV, it's an outstanding deal. I also purchased the Opppo HDMI HD player for my cousin as well. So add another $164.
Toshiba is sticking behind their DLP bulbs for 2 years. Even if one goes bad, Toshiba will cover for 2 years. New bulbs $150-$200 for every 8000-10000 hours is not bad at all.
I will probably replace my little 65" Mitsubishi HDTV with the 72" Toshiba myself.
XBOX 360 looks great.
I must say that for idiots, the color controls can be difficult. However, most AVS forum members have a copy of Digital Video Essentials and or a good understanding of color. Always set the color Temp to cool and turn down the sharpness almost all the way.

Agree with almost all you say. The Tosh is quite superior to the Samsungs and Sonys. A lot of people are brainwashed here by a couple calibrators. BTW I assume or hope you mean set to warm rather than cool. Cool is way off.

I also agree with some of your thoughts.8ka-10ka hours on lamps is a stretch............ ;) .I like the picture on mine (for everyday tv) more than anybody's I've seen. Yes, I do get out a lot. You read so many absolutely wild stories here, its hard to understand what some are thinking. I like how some people think Toshiba makes crap because they cost less than brand "mine".Who cares.Likely they are financed at 0% interest and will never be paid for anyway. Or the guys who own a 5 or 6 year old CRT and tell everyone whats best or worst.Who cares. This technology is changing monthly. Keep waiting for the next "best" thing, then wait for the price to drop,by then, the next "best "thing has come out, again, again,ad nauseum. Jump in now.The Toshiba's are a bargain,if you like their picture. If not,buy whatever.Buy what you like and what you like only, let the naysayers be _ _ _ _ed.
gshelley61 09-22-06, 10:44 AM I just pulled the trigger on a 62HM116 (which is the 62HM196 packaged with a stand, sold at Costco warehouse clubs). I'm picking it up this weekend and am sure I will be really happy with it.
I was a DLP early adopter... starting out with a Samsung 43" HLM unit, which eventually was replaced by Samsung with 46" HLN model. Great looking units - unfortunately with some reliability problems.
The 1080p screen resolution and superior black levels of all these newer DLP's are really great compared to the older 720p units I had. My experience with other Toshiba products I own is that they stand behind their stuff (to be fair, so did Samsung).
I can't wait to get mine in the house this weekend and set it up!
ThroItInEr 09-22-06, 03:50 PM My TV arrived today... 56HM195 *note my previous threads*
I was seriously thinking about denying the shipment from the way a few remarks read on here... I decided to let the guys set it up since all they had to do was lift the top of the box off... Much to my amazement, the TV has OUTSTANDING P.Q. I don't know what's wrong with some people... They might be one of those negative trolls that will bash anything just to sound cool. I have had my fair share experience with that personality type... There are a lot of them in the tech industry, because trust me, they are the only ones who know when something is trash... :end sarcasm:
Anyway, the proof is always in the pudding... TV is calibrated and looks fantastic...
I am not saying that I discounted all the negative remarks. There are just a lot of comments that are over the top which deserve the BS flag.
I appreciate this threads existance... Have a good day everybody.

The 196 series are a large step up in picture quality.
ThroItInEr, I agree that for the money, the PQ of the 195 (and 196) Toshiba DLP TVs is great. However, pray that it doesn't break while under warranty and the part needed to replaced is backordered. See my post and subsequence one in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8429166&&#post8429166
Bottom line is that Toshiba Customer Service has problems fixing their TVs or replacing them with new units in timely manner when a part is on backorder . It's been 5 weeks and I'm still waiting for my 6 month old broken 56MX195 to be replaced by Toshiba!
UniversalGC 09-22-06, 04:48 PM The 196 series are a large step up in picture quality.
Just out of curiosity, did you compare a professionally calibrated 195 model with a professionally calibrated 196 model?
wstanko 09-22-06, 04:52 PM The 196 series are a large step up in picture quality.
My 197 series is a "giant step for mankind" better than your 196 series. You should see that picture.
