View Full Version : Samsung HLR XX87W Pedistal Owners Thread - 720p DLP
chris7469 05-25-05, 03:47 PM The new 2005 Samsung HLRxx87W 720p DLP Pedistal HDTVs are arriving. It is time to start an owners thread to focus on the HLRxx87W models. Please post your impressions of these new sets, pictures of your setup, tweaks, problems, and ideas about these great HDTVs
I have had mine for about 3 weeks and I love it. The Widescreen HD programing is incredible. I have Cablevision HD (via Cablecard) and an Oppo DVD. Other than the slight hourglass shape of the 3:2 HD signal, the set is incredible. With a cable card I have less control over the aspect ratio and interactive features but I can live with that because I have one less component with a remote and wires.
Chris ... can you confirm that it is using an HD2+ chip (ie, you have a rectangular pixel pattern on the screen)?
Chris ... you might want to edit your thread title and correct the spelling of Pedestal ... just in case other owners are searching for the thread.
Does your owners manual give the contrast ratio for the set ... 2500:1 is our best guess.
chris7469 05-26-05, 09:43 AM Bill:
My old HLP-5085 had a contrast ratio of 2500 to 1. I am pretty sure the HLR has a 5000 to 1 ratio.
I will get back to you regarding the chip. My spelling is soo bad, probably should have used spell check but its fixed.
Thanks. CM
kenshin-dono 05-26-05, 10:33 PM yes i really need to know about the hd2+ chip as well.. is it an hd2+, hd2++ (if thats the name were calling it.. the succesor to the hd2+.. its gotta be a .8" 720p chip)
this is the tv im looking at getting right now but i dont want one of the wobulation chips, i want the .8" 720p hd2+ or the suposed new hd2++... im concerned it might be a wobulation or lower end chip because it costs less than the older 85 models as far as MSRP on their site shows. They also list it as a gen 5 engine whereas the 85 with its .8" was a 4th gen. The price could mean cheaper chip
they have them in at the BB i'll be getting it at but they're not on the floor yet so i cant get a look at the picture. any info is apreciated.. though im not sure how you'll check what chip type it is

One possibility to at least determine if its wobulated or not is for someone who has one to get real close to the screen and see if there is a diamond-shaped pixel pattern. A diamond pattern would suggest it is wobulated.
FWIW, Samsung also refers to the wobulated HLR sets as "gen 5" in their literature. Also, the preliminary spec sheet for the 5087 makes several references to "Cinema Smooth". I'm not 100% sure, but I thought that was the term Samsung was using for wobulation....but I may be completely mistaken on that note. [EDIT: - Looks like I was mistaken, the 4677, which AFAIK is HD2+, also references Cinema Smooth]

Chris ... the Samsung spec sheet that I have in the 87 series section of the 2005 Samsung DLP thread is showing the contrast ratio at 2500:1. Please check pixel pattern. I'm almost certain that you will see the HD2+ rectangles, but a confirmation would be great.
kenshin-dono 05-27-05, 01:14 AM how do you check the pixel pattern btw? if you look really close and see regular squares its hd2+, but if they're triangle shaped its wobulation?

A wobulated pattern would look something like the below, and you have to look very closely to see it:
/\/\/\
\/\/\/
/\/\/\
\/\/\/
I can't draw an ascii HD2+ pattern, but it would look more like a grid.
Anyways, either way its pretty unmistakable if you get right up close while the TV is playing something.
In the literature, HLR HD4 based sets always seem to be qualified with "up to" 2500:1 CR, where as the lit for the 87 does not have the qualifier...of course that may not mean anything as we have only seen a preliminary spec sheet. I do wonder what "up to" means though...is that only achievable with DNIe or something? Anyways, I just hope this isn't the road DLP makers go down, making it very difficult to determine the technical differences between models /sigh

Couple of HLR questions to those lucky to have!!
How is the noise of the unit when running with volume off ?
If you hook a PC up via HDMI can you comment on it, overscan, 1:1, etc?
What's the advantage of HLR over HLP pedestal units, as I understand both use the same HD2+ chip, not just specs but what you are seeing?
There is some excellent prices on the HLP line here, and I am wondering it its worth waiting for a HLR?
Can you confirm that this set does NOT have a VGA input?
Good pic. Note that on the HLP 63 and HLR 67 models you can only see the diamond-shaped pixel pattern of the HD3/HD4 when there is camera movement in a scene. Otherwise, you will see no pixel pattern at all. S
So with a PC hooked up outputting 720p how does a still desktop look?
Does it resolve all the pixels or drop every 2nd one?
kenshin-dono 05-27-05, 06:04 PM oh there was one more thing i was curious about. The manuals not that clear on what the modes actually do. does it have any kinda 'wide zoom' mode? some tvs have a mode for 4;3 source that fills the screen but stretches it on the ends to preserve a better picture.. i know most sony's have it, does the 5087 have it?

Stretch features are mostly important to people with burnable displays, most DLP owners prefer to keep the OAR.

Yes, Samsung DLP's have this mode. It is called Panoramic and it does an excellent job. The center of the screen is essentially unchanged and the edges are stretched. But, there are several other modes. You have a lot of choices.
kenshin-dono 05-30-05, 04:22 PM giving this a bump. dunno if chris forgot but theres some good questions here that need to be answered. anyone else got this set?
chris7469 05-31-05, 11:03 AM Sorry it took so long to get back to everyones comments. I was away.
I put my face to the screen last night and noticed a grid like pattern. So I will assume its the HD2+ Chip.
The contrast ratio is 2500 to 1.
There is very little fan noise at all with no volume.
I can not comment on a PC hook up because I have not used one.
My biggest gripe is the pin cushion effect. Even though it may only be up to 1/8th of an inch. I really expected to see razor sharp lines with the bars. Even in letter box the pincushion effect is noticable, not as bad though.
I saw the same effect in the store, so I know its not my TV, I have to get used to it, because everything is not in widescreen and I hate a stretched picture.
Other than that, the TV rocks. The cable card works great.
If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me an email. Thanks. CM
kenshin-dono 05-31-05, 04:57 PM woot. this will probably be the one i get sinc eit seems like its at least the hd2+
that pincussion effect is a standard on all DLPs right? not just samsungs? i seem to remember people mentioning it before
Supratik 06-01-05, 01:11 AM These are tough decisions; I think I've narrowed it down though to this particular model and the Mitsubishi 52".
kenshin-dono 06-05-05, 03:54 AM outa curiosity, either chris, or anyone else with this set; what color temp do you guys use?
i just got it today and havent had time to really mess with it, but on my old set i used cool. this sets got 2 lvls of cool and 2 of warm. Im using it just for games so i'll have to mess with it with various games but normal or cool 1 seem pretty good to me. What do you all use?
sucks you cant change it in cinema mode, what the hecks that crap? that basically leaves you just 2 settings for customizing
woot. this will probably be the one i get sinc eit seems like its at least the hd2+

There should be NO pincushion effect, the DMD is rectanglar and should be projected the same.
I don't notice any on a Panasonic DLP. On the Samsung, maybe its due to the pedestal design and more lenses / mirrors being used?
chris7469 06-07-05, 03:58 PM As far as Settings, I prefer to watch all my HD channels and DVDs in Cinema or normal with warm 1 setting, and I bring all the levels down to about 50 or 60 depending on what I am watching. I make minor tweaks, but I besically go with my eye. I am very pleased with how the picture looks, of course I like the soft film-like look on movies and I prefer a crisp brighter picture for sporting events.
Everytime time I goto a TV store I ask the salsemen to show me the pincushion effect on their DLPs. They have no idea what I am talking about and then I ask them to take their 16:9 signal and change it to 4:3. They become surprised when they see the slightly curved lines.
I went to Tony Lucs this weekend and I noticed everyone of their LG HDTV monitors showing a slight pincushion effect. However, I have not found a set that has as much of effect as the Sammys do.
Owners of DLPs with absolutely no pincushion effect please let me know. I want to check it out. Thanks. CM

I agree, am curious about the pinchusion...as to me, its very annoying and a big negative...
dokturseuss 06-10-05, 03:37 AM what are the differences in the HLRxx85W and HLRxx87W other then built in tuner?
yarsrvenge 06-10-05, 10:03 AM I ordered it from butterfly photo and have to say the transaction and shipping went splendidly. I also ordered a TR85 stand but I have not received it yet.
I have a picture and a video but I need three more posts before I can include a link I think :)
Impressions thus far:
- Picture quality is gorgeous! HD is particularily impressive. Regular analog channels look so ho-hum compared to HD Cable. I wish cox had more HD channels.
- When using the XBOX, the TV really shows off the jaggies and lack of anti-aliasing. Once XBOX 360 comes out, this should not be an issue. In the meantime, I have reduced the sharpness level on that input and it really helps.
- I haven't noticed the dramatic pincushion effect other peopel have reported but I may just not be looking hard enough. I will try and take a picture of a 4:3 screen with sidebars so you can see yourself.
yarsrvenge 06-10-05, 10:08 AM I am using a Samsung DVD player that has HDMI output and upscales to 720P. DVD output is really good obviously, but it pales in comparision to true HDTV from the Cox cable box. The DVD Player I am using is DVD-HD850.
I know there were reports in the past about some upscale DVD players having problems over HDMI with certain TV's. No problems here. Of course, they are from the same manufacturer. I did not go with the Toshiba because of bad reports with some of their players.
yarsrvenge 06-10-05, 10:16 AM I am not using an amplifier because of $$$ limitations, so I am using the speakers on the TV. I also decided to hold off on an amplifier right now because of reports with delays in sound from certain models. Since I play a lot of XBOX games, this is a concern for me.
The speakers non the TV are 30 watts. Since I am used to having an amplifier hooked up with two external speakers, the sound is a little lackluster. Not horrible, but it lacks a lot of bass.
I have the audio set to use the STS Stereo mode.
kenshin-dono 06-12-05, 05:03 PM just a heads up, my hlr5087 has no noticible pincushioning. I can get real close and double check, but from about 8 feet back, playing games in 4:3 i notice no curving on the lines
yars. I have my xbox going into the tv through component and the audio to my reciever with an optical cable, there is no audio lag.
Supratik 06-14-05, 07:50 PM So far, seems to be mostly positive reports on this television. Could you guys tell me where you purchased it as I have yet to actually see it in stores?
Thanks.
have you guys compared the HLR to the HLP? If so, what are the differences?
Thanks!

I too would be very interested in this....I found a GREAT deal on a demo HLP and am curious if there is much of a difference.
Thanks in advance!
there's a floor model near me for $1800. its a hlp6163. good deal?
kenshin-dono 06-20-05, 11:41 PM hey yars revenge. If you have burnout 3 or advent rising, could you slap them in there and tell me if you have some black borders on those games. I get them on those 2 and am just wondering if you do as well
Supratik 07-01-05, 06:16 PM Hey guys,
I'm in the process of purchasing some cables for this television as it'll be arriving soon. I was wondering if you all could tell me what type of digital audio output this television uses - is it optical or coaxial?
Thank you!

It's a digital optical audio output.

TimothyB 07-04-05, 07:30 AM I'm about to possibly order this. So what was the final decision on which chip this thing had, I read the thread but wasn't sure.
The possible lag with games is sort of a killing the sale, but I'm mainly buying for the next gen consoles that will be 720p. So even if the tv does have lag for old consoles, the new consoles shouldn't since the are 720p, right?
I sit about 12 feet away from my current 32crt. I find normal 4:3 viewing is plenty on it, but widescreen gets too small. A 50inch would add 5inchs in height to the screen and about 18inches wider. Not a huge difference for standard defintion (like owning a 40inch crt), but a huge size increase for widescreen viewing.
56inch could always be better, but I really like the styling of the pedestal. With the prices, you could get a 56inch 5667 for around the 5087, but with the cost of the stand it comes to a little more without the good styling.
So my questions again:
Which chip did you figure the 5087 has?
Will the lag go away with the next gen consoles that use 720p?
For the same price, which would you go with the 5667 or the 5087?
Oh, and what are the rated hours on the bulbs for this display, 3,000-10,000?
yarsrvenge 07-05-05, 04:06 PM I can tell you there are NO problems with video game lag on the HLR-5087W. None whatsoever. This model does not suffer from that problem, just the older models.

tombellanca 07-22-05, 01:58 PM I'm looking pretty hard at this model cuz I like the pedestal form and my audio/video component stack works pretty good in its own box (protected from the kids).
Was wondering about the placement of the center channel speaker in 5.1 setup.
Right now, it sits on top of my tv. Don't think that's an option here.
What are my options???
Can I use the built in speakers in the pedestal (?) as my center channel speaker?

I can confirm that. There is absolutely no game lag whatsoever. I tried some Test with Halo 2 and had the exact same results with a 35" Sony CRT TV.
This also does not suffer from the lilp synch i have heard about with other Samsungs.
Cablecard works great, currently my tv is the only tv in the house with digital cable and i did it with the Cablecard.
I get NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, Discovery, ESPN, HBO, and Showtime all in HD with a simple cable connected directly to the TV.
Loving it so far.
Will having this TV calibrated improve detail in dark areas? i pressume thats called the gray scale.

MoDInside 08-21-05, 09:28 PM do you guys know how to change gamma in this set? maybe via service menu.
about the lag i did notice lag on KOF Neowave on ps2, doing fall recovery is imposibble unless you do it early, this was proved with 3 of my friends in 2 different sets with the Samsung HLR5087W and a Sony KV34DRC510, with KOF Neowave and Capcom vs SNK 2 on ps2, on the HLR5087 there is definitely a little lag, me an my friends proved this, but on the Xbox, Capcom vs SNK 2 don't have lag, not any of the fighting game i have played on it have lag, Guilty Gear XX #Reload, Guilty Gear Isuka, Street Fighter Annyversary Collection, Soul Calibur 2 and others, i even change the name of the component input to GAME on the ps2 input, but that did not helped, i am not disapointed with this set, not at all, the only complaint i have besides the ps2 lag on games is the gamma seem to be to high (at least for me), it really is hurting my eyes in some situations, any help on this one will be appreciated.
PD: sorry for my crappy english, it is not my native language.
Scott-Jersey 08-25-05, 11:14 AM I just got mine yesterday and love it.
Does anyone have any experience using the 5087 with a SA8000HD box? Im able to go DVI out to HDMI in when i set the cable box picture format to 'upconvert-2' which i think forces everything to 720p, THE HD pictures of course look great but the SD pictures are ugly. Any other picture format setting, including AUTO-DVI will just give me a message of "unsupported format" on the HDMI input. This is confusing because i would have thought AUTO-DVI would be the format to use for this.
Using component outputs the SD pictures look better but the HD picture is slightly softer.

Scott-Jersey 08-29-05, 09:48 AM Well i was able to get an 8300HD from Comcast which improved the SD pictures immensely. So now all is well :)
As mentioned above, I do see some slight pincushioning on 4x3 shows which isnt a big deal but it is noticable.
I'd like to hear what settings (contrast, brightness, warm/cool, colors, etc) people are using if anyone cares to share?

How much did you pay, and was it worth it? (Picture quality wise)
Bur- Lee 08-31-05, 10:32 PM Captain,
I paid 400 bucks.
Was it worth it? Well, the picture is better now but I am not sure it is $400 better to be perfectly honest with you. Can't say that I would do it again. Not for $400 anyways.

Thanks for being honest, thats kind of what i expected.
I was also quoted 400 "for all inputs" whatever that means. I don't have anything connected to my tv except for a cablecard, so maybe i should pay less?
Captain Kirt 87w 09-02-05, 11:03 AM Is the onscreen TVGuide thats built into the tv working for you guys?
I have cablecard and live in L.A. and the TVGuide is not working for me, what can i do to fix this?
Bur- Lee 09-02-05, 06:54 PM I have read that many 720P sets upscale only the first frame of 1080I material.
Do our Samsung sets do this as well? Are we seeing 540P rather than 720P on 1080I broadcasts?
Thanks.

Captain Kirt 87w 09-02-05, 07:51 PM Good Question Lee. Someone answer the man!
desmondskiggers 09-04-05, 09:20 PM Hello all,
I am not tech savvy at all, and a lot of the above conversation is over my head.
Anyway, I have the 5087 and DirecTV. I do not have an HD Dish yet, just the regular one. Anyway, I've found the picture does not handle lots of detail well at all. I watch lots of sports and so far I've been dissapointed in the picture for the 3 grand I paid. It is very fuzzy around the players and numbers. The picture is great on close-ups, but the wide-angle views of the action leave a lot to be desired. I've watched HD broadcasts over the air w/ simple rabbit ears and they are phenomenal. Even the digital broadcasts (non-HD) that I receive w/ the rabbit ears are stellar.
Anyone experienced this or know how I might go about getting this fixed? Is it just the satellite signal? Are there settings I can change that I need to look at?
Any input would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
DS
Bur- Lee 09-04-05, 10:12 PM Hi,
Do you have this problem with only certain stations or all of them?
I have comcast now but I had Directv for years. The premium stations like HBO would come in great, some of the other broadcast stations didn't look as good. The picture in your case probably as to do with the signal coming in and not the TV.
Good luck.
Bur-Lee

Try changing to 4:3 mode then adjusting your picture settings. I have the same setup and have the same issue with the picture. I also have issues with "Rainbow affect" so I am returning mine this week. Live sports just don't look good to me on this set, HD and OTA Digital are OK but not even close to my old Sony XBR 40. Due to the rainbow issue I'm going to change to LCD RP, probably a Hitachi. I know this is a good set and everyone else loves the picture but I just can't stand the flashes of color. If it wasn't for that I would keep it. Try these settings at 4:3, watch it in 4:3 for a few days then try it back in 16:9 after you get used to it.

Thanks,
DS
That must be Fox Baseball or something.
I was watching Baseball on Fox in HD the other day and it looked horrible when compared to the Little League World Series on ABC and ESPN.
Captain Kirt 87w 09-12-05, 07:04 AM Does this TV have an interactive progam guide? Or just this damn channel list that comes up for me?
jammypramis 09-27-05, 12:24 PM Running comcast hd connected via component cables (ordered hdmi >dvi cable from monoprice on the cheap - we'll see how they work)
High definition channels from comcast are amazing - impeccable to my eyes anyway.
Jury is still out on the dnie thing - seems to sharpen up image a touch, may come down to the individual program on whether i use it or not.
On SD channels, since i replaced a 4:3 old school rear definition tv with this one, my effective screen size is smaller now on regular channels - not totally enthralled with that fact, but the hd performance makes it worth it. The sd channels look ok, some better than others, but any mpeg anamolies I see are obviously a high quality rendering of a sub-par - over compressed image from comcast - not much i can do about that so i just deal - still looks better than it did on my old set, so no sour grapes there.
I have a slight pin cushioning on the sd channels, not too bad - only noticeable if you are looking for it, once you get engrossed in watching a tv program you dont notice it anymore.
My biggest gripes are when I am viewing in total darkness the lamp in back splays out a bit of light out from the back of the box, probably through the vents in back. During dark sequences in a movie, you can see some of this light hitting the wall behind the set, does this bug anyone else?
Going to fashion some sort of bracket to mount my center above the tv, I'll post the results of that excersize some day down the line.
:)
Scott-Jersey 09-27-05, 04:26 PM I ended up just putting my center channel on the floor in front of the tv :(
So if you're successful creating a bracket for it on top of the TV please post the results. Good luck!
jammypramis 09-28-05, 01:23 PM no screws, glue or velcro going into tv at all, I created a custom black shelf that conforms to the rake angle of the tv, and has an aluminum front edge that extends down past the face of the tv top just a bit to create a gravity / friction fit.
It cannot be knocked off easily and puts the center of gravity of the speaker on axis with the center of gravity of the tv unit.
I forgot to bring my camera home, but i will take some photos and post them tomorrow. The black wood and the milled aluminum match the tv quite well i think.
jammypramis 09-29-05, 11:52 AM Still needs a bit of refinement, but here are the photos of my first attempt. I still have plenty of material left if anyone would like me to build one at reasonable price.
Scott-Jersey 09-29-05, 12:25 PM Nice work. It looks great.
CrMo4130 10-01-05, 05:37 AM I'm wanting to purchase this TV in the next few weeks myself. That center channel bracket looks really nice! I see that Circuit City has the TV online but it's way over-priced compared to some of the other stores I see online. The only thing about buying it online is that I'd have to wait for it to be shipped to me. If I bought it locally from Circuit City then I could probably have it that day. Anybody suggest a store online to purchase from that will ship to the East Coast in a relatively timely manner? I really don't want to wait 2-3 weeks for the TV to show up, much less have it end up being on back-order or drop-shipped from the manufacturer!
SnakeXs 10-23-05, 12:10 AM I'll be joining the club soon.
Has (gaming/audio) lag been an issue? So far I've seen no outcries from Pedestal owners, but then again we're a minority.
Also, great bracket, jammy. My center's a wee bit smaller, but the design is solid. I'll be emulating that somehow. How much would you guess it would be?
Thanks. Wish me luck with the set in a few days. :)
SnakeXs 11-01-05, 11:46 PM I'm officially in the club.
Set everything up today.. Some small impressions.
No rainbows for me. As before, I've tried to see them, used DVE's reference material, looked around the room, across the screen, nothing.
SSE is a wee bit noticable, but only on very bright areas, and I need to really focus. Not really an issue when I relax and watch from far away.
Gaming lag, seems to be there, actually. It may be just my head, but in menus, there is a tiny bit of a delay, not even 100ms. Again , maybe all the fear got to me. EVerything's 100% playable, though (and I'm a fairly serious gamer).
No pincushion effect, and great PQ before DVE, even better after a quick run with it. I can't say I'm let down.
Also, no audio lag. Not for the hour or so before I hooked my sound system up, not for the hours since, whilst outputting direct cable audio from the set to my receiver. (HD-DVR should be here any day, will check with that).
My biggest issue so far, and it doesn't happen often at all (besides DVEs grey menus/screens, those irked me a bit) is grey/black noise. It's there, and noticable from up close, not so much from afar. Again, I'm sure I'll get used to it.
Can't wait to enjoy many a hour of enjoyment from this baby.
SnakeXs 11-10-05, 11:43 AM Just a small update.
RBE has happened a bit. On average once an hour, if that.
It's almost entirely a mental thing, for me at least. I'd guess I ight see it once a day on average.
When I was watching Jurassic Park, and the Incredibles, or when I'm watching TV (which is not often, so what I do watch I care about), I don't see any. Period.
When I threw in Underworld, I started off with nothing. The movie started to bore me, and I started to look FOR them. And I did.
I don't notice the SSE anymore.
I noticed it starts up quick compared to a friends year or so old Sony LCD. His takes 25 or so, mine starts up in 12.
To confirm, there's absolutely no audio lag whatsoever in my set up. Not from the tuner, not from any component, analog, digital. No echo if I turn on the speakers either.
Same with gaming lag. Threw in some precise games, and there is absolutely nothing.
Also, as its broken in, and through more calibration and better sources, almost all noise is gone, from any decent viewing distance. Blacks are wonderful, as well. Batman Begins was beautiful.
I do get a small popping noise when changing the channel on the internal tuner sometimes. I find it a bit annoying. Mostly because I don't know WHAT the issue is, and I fear Samsung coming to replace anything since the set's fine as is, and I don't want THAT issue fixed at the cost of another problem turning up.
All I need is to stop watching "TV" and start watching "what's on", and I'm sure rainbows will be a thing of the past completely.
grabaka 11-11-05, 12:54 AM just bought the 5087 from best buy. got a good deal on it. it was on clearance + i had a 15% off coupon. anyways, i love this tv! i can't imagine having a better picture for HDTV than this one has right out of the box..but then again my last tv was a 25 inch panasonic.
so now that i have the tv, what type of stuff do i need to tweak it etc?
SnakeXs 11-14-05, 11:54 AM I'd say Avia or DVE. I prefer DVE, but both are great. Avia's easier to use.
That's all to do some basic settings.
Enjoy.
Supermans 11-26-05, 05:00 PM This is my first post on this forum. I just found it doing a search today and have read this entire topic. I'm glad others here who have purchased this TV have made comments and posted pictures of their setups. I will do the same and let people know about my experiences. I bought my TV at Best buy with a 12% off coupon while the price was already lowered to 2,799. So I got the TV for $2,463.99 and am very happy. :) The TV looked great at the store and just as good if not sharper than the Sony 3 LCD XBR sitting next to it.
I did learn that there is a "game mode" option for those of you playing X-box or PS2 that takes away the lag caused by DNIE and certain setups.
I have one question to any of you owners of this TV.
Would there be audio lag if I hooked up my PC using a DVI to HDMI cable and having the audio come out of my PC's soundcard. Essentially, I am wondering if the post-proccesing of the video to the TV will cause the lag to occur?
If so, then I would have to buy a DVD player with an HDMI connection by itself and only use the TV's speakers. Let me know. Thanks
Just purchased the HL-R5087W yesterday at my local CC and tentative scheduled delivery is Friday. A question for those of you who have the TV:
Does anyone know which Samsung components are "Anynet" controllable? I noticed that there is an input on the back of the pedestal for an "Anynet" cable and the manual touches on hooking up a Samsung component through the "Anynet" jack for easier remote control compatability/memorization of modes and what not.
Are any of the D* Samsung HD receivers (SIRT-360 in particular) controllable this way?? I currently have several D* HD receivers but none are Samsungs....and I'm debating E-baying for a 360....but will be less inclined if there is no additional functionality with the Samsung Pedestal TV.
Thanks for any info....and I'm DYING to get this bad boy up and running! :D
Supermans 11-29-05, 05:23 AM Lucky you, you're getting it on Friday. I have to wait till Saturday....
I asked this in my last post:
"Would there be audio lag if I hooked up my PC using a DVI to HDMI cable and having the audio come out of my PC's soundcard. Essentially, I am wondering if the post-proccesing of the video to the TV will cause the lag to occur?"
Also, I bought a Sony upconverter DVD player model number DVPNS70H. DOes anyone have this DVD player and is using it with their HLR5087W pedestal 50" with no problems??
I won't have a PC hooked up....and as I said I'm going to be purchasing (at some point) a D* E-bayed HD receiver to replace the existing Hughes E-86 model I currently am holding onto to hook up to this new DLP...but the E-86 uses component hookups...and I'm going to get (most likely) a DVI capable D* receiver. I need an HD receiver that has a VCR control cable hookup to work with my RCA PVR.
The RCA PVR (model 7005n) that I have doubles as my DVD player. My main reasoning is: With this PVR I can record what I like to call "Quasi-HD"---on high mode the recordings of the HD channels look basically DVD quality (which makes time shifting MUCH more palatable on the HD channels instead of having to resort to watching my SD Tivo recordings on either a widescreen TV or a regular 4:3 TV).
I currently have one HD-TIVO, 3 SD Tivo's and 2 other RCA 7005n's hooked up, so once D* shakes out their newer MPEG-4 based receivers and add more content I'll worry about upgrading to newer receivers.
I've also been eyeballing the TR85 stand....and am going to wait and see how the TV itself fits into the room before I figure out if I'll be purchasing the Samsung stand....or a generic tower stand for all of my components.
BTW---did you pick up a warranty on your TV ? The CC salesman went TOTAL FULL COURT PRESS ON ME....but I declined. Along with the "you need a Monster Surge Protector" and "You need a new HD receiver" and "You don't want just any cables for this TV".....funny stuff. :p
Supermans 11-29-05, 06:40 PM I declined on the warranty as well since I figure it has a 1 year manufactures warranty already and I'm on a budget. The cost of a new bulb is still 100 bucks less than the warranty and I figure if it lasts longer than 6 months without any problems, it should keep on ticking for at least the 3 years the warranty would have covered it anyways. I got the TV for under $2,500 after tax so I wanted to keep it a bargain. I have read that a UPS battery backup is best to have connected to this TV since it needs a fan cooling the bulb down after you turn it off. I did buy a monster cable that was HDMI and an upconverter DVD player from Sony costing more than I would have liked to spend on them. However I will return both of them if my computer with the nvidia purevideo decoder and a TI4400 graphics card creates a better picture connected with DVI to HDMI cable that I also bought. And if the sound is in sync coming from the computer speakers as well. First I want to see which of these methods will give me the best DVD picture on my new set before doing anything else. I will also be going to attempt to recieve HD content from an antenna and see how that goes first before contemplating a dish as well in order to save money. Let me know how it all went once you get it on Friday. Happy Holidays. :)
Anyone who reads this thread and has this TV, please give me your reccomendations as to what DVD player makes the picture quality look the best on this TV. ANy suggestions. Should I return my (Sony upconverter DVD player model number DVPNS70H) for another one that you guys know is better?? Thanks
Supermans 12-02-05, 01:08 PM My HLR5087W is arriving on Saturday :)
I pray that I have a good working DLP with no issues.
What can I expect when I turn it on/off??? Is the color whell and/or fan loud? Should I plug in a Conditioner with a UPS together? What is the best way to begin calibration?? Connecting a computer thru DVI, should I have the PC on first or the TV?? Just curious. Take care
The wife just told me that my 5087 just arrived. I"m still at work though. Hopefully all the wiring I ordered arrives today (like it's supposed to) so I can run another length of cable up to my dish to hook up my D* STB....and OTA antenna.
Till then, when I get home tonight I'll see if the Silver Sensor STB antenna I have can pick up anything OTA.
Question for those who own this TV already: Is it "toppleable"? Does it have an area to secure it to the wall....or is that overkill?? It was hard to get a gauge on the set I saw at CC because it was set off in an area where I really couldn't "hang" on it
Supermans 12-02-05, 07:08 PM I believe you have to leave a space for air or breathability behind the TV so the bulb won't overheat.
It is being delivered at 11am on Saturday and I won't be there to see them hook it up. Apparently they turn the TV on before they leave to see if it works. I really don't want them to do that however they will probably do it anyways. I'll let you know how the Sony upconverter compares to my Dell 9100 in image quality...
I quickly hooked up a silver sensor to the 5087W when I got home tonight and did a scan....the OTA tuner only picked up CBS HD locally, so I watched some of "The Ghost Whisperer"....a first for me....and I must say the overall picture was VERY nice out of the box (as was Ms Hewitt... :o ) I'll assume the lack of stations being picked up in the scan is a result of my location and NOT a direct lack of sensitivity of the tuner.
This thing is pretty massive (pedestal and all) and fills my living room nicely. I'll have more opinions after I get the OTA rooftop and D* STB hooked up (weather permitting) tomorrow. Sure would've been nice to watch the Goonies on HDNET Movies tonight (or I Robot)....
One thought: I know there's been banter on some of the other threads (and maybe even this one) regarding the media stand that wraps around the pedestal as well as other stands/shelving. As I stood there looking at the TV I had a (probably not so) brilliant thought: Looking at the top of the TV I wonder if I could install either a glass (or chrome) "shelf" that attaches to the wall with either a cleat or resting on a ledge....and have the front part of the shelf resting on the front of the TV??? Measurements would be: 54" wide x 20" or so deep (from the wall to the front of the TV)?? Has anyone done this....or thought to do this?? My only reasoning is that with 3 kids, I'd *like* to have all my accesories/receivers "up" out of reach.
Anyone ?!?!
Does anyone know which Samsung components are "Anynet" controllable? I noticed that there is an input on the back of the pedestal for an "Anynet" cable and the manual touches on hooking up a Samsung component through the "Anynet" jack for easier remote control compatability/memorization of modes and what not.
I bought the Samsung HT-HDP40 HDMI 5 Disc DVD Home System and it has the Anynet feature. I haven't received my 5087w yet though (MONDAY!!) so I haven't been able to try it out yet.
This HT-HDP40 system is a nice little all-in-one package for anyone on a budget. It's got a 5-disc DVD player with 720p/1080i upconversion, 5.1 speaker setup, one HDMI output and one HMDI input, 800 watts power, and it only runs about $399. Given that the 360 and next year's Nintendo Revolution have no HDMI/DVI output, and the PS3 is the only console that *will*, I should have all my HDMI switching bases covered.
Spent the better part of the AM running coaxial to my OTA antenna as well as a line for my D* HD STB....and I must say, the picture is pretty good without me sitting down to tweak. I also split the Rooftop coaxial so I can run a line to the TV to use the internal OTA tuner as well as a run to my D* STB (Hughes E86 with a notoriously crappy/flakey OTA tuner) so I can watch local HD while recording off of my D* STB.
The OTA tuner has a MUCH crisper picture than my D* STB on the local HD channels...but I'll also state that the E86 is hooked up via Component cables. I Ebayed a Samsung TS-360 HD receiver and that should be here on Monday....so I'll be running that off of a DVI---->HDMI cable....so I'll see if the picture looks much better that way.
The sound is more than adequate with the 5087's speakers. Eventually I get a Surround Sound System....but I'll give this thing 2 thumbs up RIGHT out of the box :D
I notice the pincushioning as well on the 4:3 material....but I'm *kind* of used to that from my personal experience with a Philips 30" CRT HDTV. I don't watch ANY 4:3 material....and most usually will confine my viewing to HD channels or sporting events that are recorded and watched via a DVR/TIVO. I leave the non-HD stuff to the wife......
Still itching to figure out if I can *create* a shelf for the top of the TV ala jammypramis's center channel speaker shelf/stand a dozen or so posts above.
Any thoughts/input would be appreciated.... :)

What can I say. Out of the box picture on Standard with Dnie On using HDMI was very impressive. My wife and I watched movies all day. I had her pick the first movie, "Phantom of the Opera", which sounded very nice. You have to go into the sound settings and change it from Standard to movie and enable the SXRT surround so you can hear the bass a lot better. Most reviews on CNET say the sound isn't very good, however I have to point out they probably didn't change their settings. Secondly, Dnie really does make the image crisper and look much better in my opinion. So many threads about how to turn it off and such, I'm glad this TV has a demo mode where you can see for yourself what it does split screen and side by side. I am very happy and going to use it all the time.
The DVD player I have hooked up is a Sony NS70H Silver upconverter. Out of the box, this DVD player coupled with the HLR5087W looks fantastic with Dnie On. I put on the Original Star Wars A New Hope and it looked better than any HD signal I've ever seen. I watched the whole movie and felt like a kid all over again watching it for the first time. I haven't played any movies that fill up the whole widescreen yet, however i'll report if I see any shifting of the image issues others have had with this DVD player. I for one see the image as the best I've ever seen so far, and I'm very picky.
I'm going to hook up my PC to the TV and let you know how tthat compares to the Sony. I have a Dell 9100 2Gb ram, nvidia 6800 256, X-Fi soundcard, Nvidia Purevideo decoder, and lots of hard drive space. I want to see how all my screensavers will look on the TV to have it on when guests come over.
For now, I just want to know if I should or can hook up both a Line Conditioner (Pure AV) with my UPS (APC) at the same time to the TV to give it double protection. At the moment I only have the line conditioner. Thanks
BTW- Is the red Standbye light on the fron of the pedestal always on??
BTW- Is the red Standbye light on the fron of the pedestal always on??
On mine....yes. My kids love seeing the little smiley face on start up that appears on the LED area of the pedestal....as well as the startup/shutdown melody.
rorktor1 12-06-05, 10:08 AM Hey, everyone! I purchased the 5087w a few weeks ago and its being delivered to my new apartment on the 22nd - VERY excited! The reason I'm writing is to inquire about gaming lag. I'm a huge gamer - I will probably use this set 90% for gaming. I own a PS2, Gamecube, Xbox and soon a XBOX360 (stupid pre-order). I'm even going to hook up my PC every once in a while in play some CS:S.
I've read horror stories about Samsung DLPs and gaming today. It's kind of scaring me actually. The xx67 models seem to be the ones suffering the most. There was a couple people in here that stated they had no gaming lag except for on a couple PS2 games? I would prefer no lag at all and might move my money over to a Toshiba 52HMX95 if Best Buy carries them.
To sum up, is there anybody here that actually plays games on a daily basis on their 5087w and can describe the gaming lag they may or may not be experiencing? It would really dispel my worries, because right now I'm really worried.
Oh, I'll be playing games in 480i (PS2, Gamecube, XBOX), 480p(Xbox and some PS2 games) and eventually 720p on Xbox360.
PLEASE HELP !

rorktor1 12-06-05, 11:52 AM Was the game you tried running in progressive scan? I think a lot of the Gamecube games, at the popular ones, can run in progressive scan at 480p. My main worry is games on gamecube, ps2, and xbox that run in 480i. Supposedly the xx6x models had really slow upscaling from 480i to the native 720p, thus the lag. I think I read somewhere that the xx87w has a faster processor for that, along with HD2+ and faster color wheel or something? Hopefully, the upscaling is fast enough to not notice any lag or maybe there wont be any at all. I HOPE! If you have a PS2, do you mind doing a test on your 5087w with a game with a jump button or something. Just hit the jump button and see if you notice a delay of your character starting its jump after hitting the button.
THANKS!

I don't have the progressive scan cable for the gamecube. I noticed 0 lag on the standard default settings.
rorktor1 12-07-05, 09:18 AM Wow, thats really good news. Especially after my testing last night at my local Best Buy.
I went in with a PS2 and a golf and football game. They didn't have the HL-R5087w that I had purchased from them anymore, so the only Samsung DLP that I could test was a 5066w I THINK, might have been 5067 or even 5065 not sure! The price was 1999.97 though. I'll check to see if I can get the exact model number. ANYHOW -
The Samsung DLP I tested Hot Shots Golf on had really really bad lag - I hadn't tested any other TVs yet, but right away I knew that the game was unplayable. Oh, I'll point out that I didn't have component cables, just composite.
I then tried a Toshiba 46hm95 with the same set up and experience very close to ZERO lag.
Hopefully the pedestal versions have a different way of processing 480i input - because from what I've heard here, I should expect no lag at all. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Even with Dnie and DNR turned on, I didn't notice any lag playing all the fast paced games I have like F-Zero and Burnout 2. This was in 480i, not 480p.
I did notice that the Sound settings out of the box are not set correctly for sounding good with DVD's. You have to go in and change the settings to movie mode and turn SRSXT on.
The TV works great, I'm having a blast using it. I have to tell you, the lamp runs at standard picture settings at 100W. Turning the video picture mode to Dynamic uses 120W of the bulb shortening its life by a couple years if used frequently. I always keep the mode on standard and use cinema mode when it is much darker in the room. I did not notice any rainbow during white scenes at all when looking real fast from one side of the screen to the other.
Connecting the computer also works great. I didn't notice any sound lag either coming from the PC's speakers and the video being sent DVI-HDMI.
Overall, I'm very happy with this TV.
I just acquired my 5087w and I haven't noticed any lag either. I'm a game developer so it's safe to say I'm an obsessive gamer as well. Now, one cavet here is that I'm only using progressive output and I've been mostly playing 360 games the last few weeks. I need to finish Shadow of the Colussus so I'll check that out (and other PS2 and Cube games) and see what I find. I would have *definitely* noticed lag on Halo 2 multiplayer games (it looks great with the 360 software emulation bumping the game up to 720p, btw) and I'm not seeing it.
This set is awesome! I just bought the new Criterion transfer of 'Ran' and watching that last night was amazing.
I've had the TV for a little under 2 weeks and a recent DVR recording has led me to think about either exchanging this for another 87W or getting another TV entirely.
As has been mentioned, the pincushioning effect is either: Unnoticeable by folks, slightly there or REALLY there. Well, I thought I could live with the pincushioning/bowing/geometry issues that I notice on 4:3 material....but figured just "weren't noticeable" on HD/16:9 material....until I watched a DVR'd recording of an HDNet Test Pattern from Tuesday AM.
I have my RCA DVR connected to Component 1 and upon replaying it last night, I noticed how truly sad the geometry on this particular set is. The vertical lines in the test pattern flair out dramatically on both sides of center...and the image is also tilted slightly. I tried this on Component 1 and 2 and both inputs have the same exact tilt/bowing (which isn't surprising). When I watch the local NBC Digital OTA Weather channel (16:9 picture) the weather info/grids/boxes are VERY noticeable with the bowing/bending. And, now that I think about it, when I was watching some football on Sunday via D* Sunday Ticket on a FG kick, the uprights literally looked flaired/bowed.
Also, I noticed when I stand to the left/right of the screen and look *at the image on the screen it almost looks like it's bowed INWARD (if that makes sense). I noticed this on the HDNet Test Pattern as well as on a few different HD programs on Discovery HD. Weird....
So, I called CC and they said I can do a straight exchange for another 87W....or exchange it for a different TV. So my big question: Has anyone noticed the level of bowing that I'm seeing....because now that I've *seen* it....I'm festering about it!
Even putting in a DVE disc last night produced the same results on the geometric tests. I'm sure I can tinker in the Service Menu (as I've done on my Philips HD CRT that had geometric issues that were correctable in the SM) but I don't want to futz around with the set for the price I paid for it.
I'm going to stop at BB/CC tonight and specifically try and get the remote and put on a 4:3 image to see if the store models are as bad as mine. Because that's my fear---the pincushioning is obviously there on most/all models....it's just a matter of the level of degree on the set you get.
I knew about the DLP pincushioning effect before I jumped in....just didn't think I'd see it THIS noticeably.
Thanks
Supermans 12-16-05, 01:05 PM I've had the TV for a little under 2 weeks and a recent DVR recording has led me to think about either exchanging this for another 87W or getting another TV entirely.
As has been mentioned, the pincushioning effect is either: Unnoticeable by folks, slightly there or REALLY there. I don't notice any of the bowing you mention. What I would do is go to the store and take the DVD with the test pattern and check it out on the floor model. (Go to a Best Buy and or Circuit City) If you notice the same thing, it is probably universal with all of them and some people like me don't notice a problem. If that is the case, you should order a different model.

Sadly, I went back to CC (where I purchased the TV) and eventually decided to set up a "Fetch" in exchange for a Zenith plasma. I knew about the Samsung DLP's tendency to exhibit "some" bowing....but the particular unit I have is WAY beyond that. And, in addition I went to a total of 2 other Best Buy's and one additional CC to look at their floor model of the 5087w. The first CC I went to exhibited the pincushioning/bowing on 4:3 material though not as severely as mine. The 1st BB didn't have the unit on the floor...and the 2nd BB's unit had a "loop" running...and the kid said he couldn't change any source material for me....and couldn't find the remote. But, when viewing the loop I was still able to perceive the bending of the picture that was already engrained in my minds eye.
I don't want to ruin anyone else's perception of this TV, as I am QUITE happy with the way I tweaked the picture for the HD material. Even my wife (who doesn't take things to the extreme I do with HD material) said she was sad to see this TV go....but she too could *see* what I was seeing.
Clarity and resolution wise I thought it looked AWESOME. But, my perception was ruined by the geometry issues. I will try and post some pics if I can this weekend.
Suffice to say the salesman at CC basically told me that I was crazy for even worrying about something along these lines, as "most people wouldn't even notice that". That comment really ticked me off, as for the $ X,XXX.XX I spent I think it's within reason to expect to be satisfied with a product.
Supermans 12-16-05, 03:18 PM Plasma's have their advantages and disadvantages. You just have to decide which looks best to you. I would never buy a Plasma just for the fact that it will eventually need to be thrown away without possibility of fixing and they are more expensive to begin with. One could argue that buying lamps for DLP's over a period of time makes up the difference. However if after ten years you have to buy a new TV instead of replacing a lamp, you still end up spending more. Most people would say that they would probably buy a new TV any ways in ten years just to keep up with the technology. We still have a Sony CRT that is 15 years old and it still looks great watching current DVD's. I just recently upgraded to 720p HDTV and I hope my HLR5087W lasts 10 years or so without any major problems. There is a huge difference watching TV in HDTV than what we've always been used to before. It will probably be another ten years or so until I would want to upgrade regardless of new technology. At least by that time, my family would still have the pedestal model which I could place in my kids room while I upgrade to a new type of TV standard.
Jay, I hope you get the TV you deserve and get many years of enjoyment out of it. This thread doesn't seem to have much action and I will miss talking to you. Take care and have a Merry Christmas.
Scott-Jersey 12-16-05, 03:43 PM I have noticed that bowing effect occasionaly when watching hdtv (hdmi input) but havent seen it when watching DVDs (component input). I wasnt sure if it was my source (SA8300hd) or the TV itself but its very subtle. I notice it on background images mostly.

Scott--are you in "Jersey"....as I am?
If so, for me, the kicker was when I put on 4-2 (OTA NBC Digital Weather) either via the internal tuner or my Samsung D* receiver and I saw the bowing effect. That's a 16:9 picture. I'll try and post some screen caps when I get a chance (of 4-2) as well as the HDNet Test Pattern screen (which comes off of my DVR on Component 2).
I have a Philips 30" CRT HDTV that had/has a SERIOUS bowing issue (IIRC the thread I participated in same a Philips tech memo/document attributed it to a weak power supply) that I labored with immensely in the service menu to minimize (but it's still there) but that's on my bedroom TV (which I only watch as I'm falling asleep). I knew about the DLP (Samsung in particular) issue WRT pincushioning, but.....I just couldn't get past it when it hit me.

Honestly i havent even tried the internal tuner as i get all my hdtv from comcast.
I'd be curious to see the pictures to see if its much more noticable on your tv. The football games this weekend looked absolutely amazing on this TV!

Quoted from "nitrogen" in another thread.....
You are not the first person to have this problem. It seems that HDTV's like to act like normal TV's and overscan like mad. The global consensus seems to be that you have to either crop your resolution (i.e. something like 1880x1020) or use an analog input, as digital connections seem to just grab the pixels and do what they want with them, ignoring the timing information.
It is an overscan problem and can easily be fixed within your Nvidia cards settings.
I've been using my new HLR5087W for over a month now and have to say I've watched more TV than ever before. All my DVD's and over the air broadcasts look amazing. 720p looks just as good as my friends 1080i, and even better when the signal coming in is a sporting event from Fox which is in 720p. With Dnie on, my TV looks so much better than his Toshiba 56MX195 which is a 1080p model. He notices the difference and sharper images every time and wishes he had gotten a Samsung.
sweston 01-19-06, 02:31 PM Does this have IEEE 1394 firewire support? The mfg specs say it does however I cannot find a picture depicting the port and the HLRxxxxW thread says it does not have it.
One other thing I am adding.
I am confilcted with the option of (purchasing this set with the current pedestal AND purchasing a standalone AV rack to place next to my mains) OR (get the hlr5067w model and a TV stand) for all my AV components.
Purchasing the optional stand for the 5087W is an option but looks to me to ONLY work with that TV and would be tossed out with the TV when upgraded down the line.
Am I wrong in thinking that? I think the picture quality of the 87W is better than the 67W but that is only from seeing them at BB and who knows if they have calibrated their sets properly.
What are your guy's thoughts on PQ of the 67W vs 87W?

Picture quality is better in the 87W for some reason. I believe it is due to the lamp location in the pedestal, and slightly brighter contrast ratio. 2500 compared to 2000. All pedestal models are sharper than their counterparts and more expensive when they were brand new. As for inputs, you have to determine for yourself using the Samsung website since they list all of them on each model.

No you're not wrong, Its a good looking rack but its made to fit around the pedastal. I guess you could use it with another TV but i wouldnt buy it without having the 5087.
But if you're upgrading to a new TV just sell the rack with the old one.
sweston 01-24-06, 05:09 PM I think I will build a rack from oak and glass instead. This way it will match the railing it will be sitting up against.
Supermans 01-30-06, 01:35 AM How is everyone doing?? Just wanted to keep this thread alive. My TV works perfect, no issues with it yet.
Just wondering, post your brightness settings on standard and cinema that you all are using. Or just the settings you have changed to adjust the screens. I've changed mine to 54 on standard using the THX optimizer.
sweston 01-30-06, 09:08 AM I watch TV in standard w/o changes and DVD's in cinema mode. I have changed the gama settings to 5 in the service menu however for my component inputs. I will need to check out the hdmi interface when my cable gets in Tuesday.
The TV shows the most beautiful picture I have ever seen. I am so glad I bought this set.

I kept everything on standard without changes for the longest time. However after the bulb runs for about 100 hours, it seems to settle and dim slightly. This is normal for all Bulbs and it requires you to adjust the brightness a little bit to compensate. And don't ever use Dynamic because it cuts the life of the lamp in half.
I agree with you that this is the best picture I've ever seen. Even sitting next to the 50 inch Sony SXRD, this one still looked sharper and more natural. I did purchase the Sony upconverter DVD player and it works great. Using HDMI makes a big difference when watching DVD's.
Have you watched High Definition Broadcasts yet??
sweston 01-30-06, 01:00 PM I am waiting on my cablecard from mediacom. However I did find some hbo channels in the upper 103.30 regions that are not listed on titantv or other hd tv guide sites. Funny thing is I do nto subscribe to HBO and I can get some of their channels.
I found some local tv on there as well.
Here is another thing I noticed. When watchign some of those digital channels I find the movies rewinding and fast forwarding all by itself. Is this some fluke with the provider or am I seeing someone elses video on demand subscription? I really would like to know what's happenign there as I do not want to call my provider and have them "fix" the free pay channels I am getting.
I found the answer in this post:
To be clear, the digital cable channels (HD or SD) you are getting fall into two catagories, PPV or VOD, and all other channels.
The PPV or VOD you see is from other subscribers.
All other channels, like HBO, are the mistake, and it could well be no one in your area subscribes to them either. They are either in the clear or encrypted at the head end, so everyone in the area could also receive them like you do, with a QAM tuner.
The reason the cableco's aren't too concerned with this as yet, is because not that many HDTV's have QAM tuners, and of those, few people understand that just connecting the cable and doing a signal scan could give them HDTV.
What you are experiencing is not unheard of, which is why I can explain it in detail. In most cases it comes to an end at some point in the not too distant future.
funkmonky 01-31-06, 10:50 PM Hi everyone, I've been looking at this TV for almost a year now and I think I'm finally gonna buy it (well, pretty soon) but I have a few concerns.
1. How is the picture quality on a non-HD signal? About half a year ago, I was at a store and asked the sales person to put it on standard signal (they were using Direct TV if that matters, I'm on digital cable). The picture looked really pixelated and put me off on buying a HD TV. Time passed and the urge came back; I headed over to a different store and wanted to get another view. They only had the 56", the 1080p, so I suspected if anything, since it's a higher resolution, the picture would be magnified more and be even blurrier. To my surprise, it wasn't too bad. Is this supposed to be the case? A 1080p TV's picture will look better than a 720p on non-HD signals? Or, it's just the stores and how the lines were being fed?
I figured since I'll be sitting about 10 or less feet from the TV, and my eyes aren't the greatest, that I'd probably wouldn't even notice the difference between 720 and 1080p.
2. I haven't been keeping up with the forum, but some say they experience lag with Samsung DLPs, but I don't think with this specific model. Whether with DVD's, video games, whatever, I don't think I've read anything for the 5087.
The price of these units are dropping since the new models are coming out. Anyone know if they're still doing the pedestals? I was told this model has been discontinued (so the price hopefully will continue to drop).
Well, I'd like to hear what you guys have to say...thanks.

1) The pq of standard cable/OTA signals leaves a bit to be desired. However I personally would not stop that from letting me purchase this set again. Since pretty much all stations are merging to HD soon you will be seeing everything in HD and nothing in SD. The image isn't really that bad and is still enjoyable to watch. I sit ~6-7' away from my set. I would prefer to be further back yet but that is not possible in my room arrangement now.
2) There is a minute bit of lag when playing video games or anything for that matter. You can tell when you hook up the dvd player to the TV and also audio out to your receiver. When using the tv speakers and the receiver you can hear an echo created by the delay of the TV processing the input from analog to digital.
This lag does not affect MY or my friends gameplay in the least with my xbox.
There are 2 ways to get around the sound delay.
1) Use the HDMI connector for your STB or DVD player.
2) Use the audio output from TV (RCA or Optical) to keep audio in synch with the video.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum. I just turned on the Low Noise Signal Amplifier and connected my old Antenna. I get all the local channels, and this depends on how close you are to the stations. It is unreal to watch a Football game, especially sports on Fox. It's good that you'll be able to watch the Super Bowl. Let us know how it looks :).
Dan E Laruso 02-05-06, 01:33 PM Well, I was about to buy the 5667W model online when I went to to CC to confirm it was a go...then they had the 5087W right by it and the difference was significant imo. Enough that I'm now going to order the 5087W instead most likely.
I'm guessing since there's been no posts to the contrary, that the pedestal height is ideal for watching? Also--while I might be moving it to a larger room eventually, the TV will be going into a room where I'll only be about 6 feet from it when viewing. Any problems that might occur from this---thanks! Looking forward to joining the team.
per the link on samsung site in spec sheet(i cannot post link) on the last page hl-r 5087w has built in high definition tuner/decoder, i got a regular digital cable box from comcast and only audio was available, the tech who came in advised that i need to get hd box, which i did and now i am able to get both video as well as audio hd channels,
so is the info on the spec sheet on samsung site wrong or did i not configure it right

It does decode HD as long as they are unencrypted signals. That is why you would benefit from a CableCard in your tv instead of the set top box.

If you notice the HLR5087W has a clearer or sharper image than the 5667W, it is because the 5087W has the HD2++ Mustang chip that is non-wobulated. The 5667W has a wobulated HD3 chip with half the mirrors in the the DLP chip displaying the upper half and then the lower half of one pixel fooling your eye into thinking it is complete. The HLR5087W's HD2++ chip has 1:1 pixel mapping where one mirror equals one pixel. You should not be able to see any distinctive pixels at 8-10 feet range when watching the TV. I tested 6 feet and it still looks very good even though I prefer 8 to 10 feet.
sweston 02-06-06, 10:59 AM I watch this set from about 6-9ft depending on where I sit in the room. It is very watchable from either distance. I recommend watching in dim light setting the picture to cinema mode easing stress on the eyes.
Definately the 5087w is the way to go if you choose samsung.

Sweston is correct, the TV does have all you need to watch HD from all current sources. That is one of the reasons I purchased it. The other is that I don't have to buy a TV stand which cost around 400 bucks too. All local HD channels are unencrypted and as long as you are within range, you will get them with a seperate antenna.

I just popped in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and set the couch six feet from it. It is very watchable and gives you a more cinematic feel since it covers your entire field of vision. Definately put the TV in Cinema mode ;)

I'll find the links where all the information is given about the chips. There is a thread on this forum which has a poll about "HD2+ vs HD3 vs HD4" chip as well. I did a lot of research before buying the TV and also compared it to all the other TV's in multiple locations before making my decision on buying it. Once I saw that I liked the picture better than even the new $7,000 dollar Sony SXRD, I knew this was my baby. I keep Dnie on all the time even though there is the option to turn it off.
Spec Sheet (HD2+ not listed) http://product.samsung.com/SamsungUSA/PRODUCT/20050713/HLR5087W_5688W_spec.pdf
tidbits of info ;)
In the middle of 2005, TI invented a new version of the HD2+ chip which they used in the HLR5087W. It is now known as the HD2++ chip. It uses a (.8" 720p) design process.
The pedestal is there to encase the vertical light engine, that provides a smoother picture, not just for looks. That is why side by side with any other Samsung with the same HD2+ chip, the pedestal still looks better.
Another tidbit of information, the Pedestal Captain Kirk model won the Best of CES Innovations when it was first introduced. This second incarnation of it is even better than their first design in 2004 side by side.
Where can you get details on what these systems have--particularly referring to the HD3 wobulated chip vs. the HD2++ non-wobulated....thanks for all the info btw.

Dan E Laruso 02-07-06, 04:34 PM Thanks for all of the info guys, it was very helpful. Unfortunately, due to some "domestic pressures", I may need to postpone the purchase for another month or two. Does anyone happen to know if the 5087 will still be around, from what I understand it's been disco'd? Why, if everyone seems to share the belief that the picture with this chip is superior is this model getting disco'd and none of the other 720p's use it?
funkmonky 02-07-06, 09:54 PM From what the guy at the store told me, it was discontinued because the design was better suited for a larger screen (ie 56"), but I don't know if that's true or not.
My other question is what happens with 1080p signals? I'm assuming that the TV can accept it but outputs as 720p?
bob13654 02-15-06, 06:48 PM Quick question. I have scanned throught this thread and maybe I missed the answer. I just bought a 5087W for my bedroom, my first DLP, and I was curious whether turning it on for short periods of time is a bad thing. I like to watch the news while getting dressed in the morning, but I didn't know if turning it on for about five minutes would be bad for the lamp. Is it bad for the bulb to just turn it on for short periods of time?
pungche 02-26-06, 12:21 PM I recently purchased the 5087 and an awaiting delivery.
My one question is do you think i should upgrade to one of the hd upconversion dvd players. I currently have a non progressive scan dvd player. I read through the primer on this topic in one of the ohter forums and now understand that this depends on the technology built into the tv itself...if whether or not the dvd player would deinterlave and upscale better. Also if you do recommend getting one which dvd player would you recommend?
Thanks
Supermans 04-14-06, 01:33 AM I recently purchased the 5087 and an awaiting delivery.

You don't need to upgrade your DVD player at the moment since the TV does a great job upconverting. However the new Sony DVPNS75H is the upconverter I bought recently and have to say it produces much brighter and detailed colors through HDMI than any DVD player thru component. Remember, the cleaner the signal is to the TV, the better the color saturation will be. An upconverter player isn't neccesary, however if you want the best out of your TV, you need one in order to use the HDMI input.
The settings I use with the DVPNS75H are only Cinema 2 in the settings. On the Samsung, I only up the brightness level 4 notches on standard, and keep Dnie on all the time. Movies look the best with these settings. I have to say this TV still amazes me and my friends. DVD's look amazing. And I don't know why the model was discontinued, however it lives on in my living room :) Favorite movies so far on it have to be "Phantom of the Opera" (watching it a lot with my wife) "Star Trek First Contact", Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Ghostbusters, "GroundHog Day", King Kong, and Finding Nemo.
1080i Hd from over the air antenna look amazing. Compared to my best friends Sony SXRD which is a 1080p set, I have to say some HD shows look better on my TV. DVD's look better with my combination DVD player and TV than my friends Oppo with his Sony. Both of us have 50 inchers, however I like mine a lot more. His Sony had a green blob problem, and was too oversaturated and bright.
I just wanted to say "HI" and is a new owner of a 5087W :D
wow.... is there really any owners of the Samsung HLR XX87W Pedistal sets.?
Oh well, mine will be here tomorrow. wooohooo!!
alexr214 04-26-06, 03:18 PM As a new HL-R5087 owner (Got mine in February), all I have to say is WOW. This set looks soooo much better than the samsung tabletop models. There is an obvious difference in image quality. My wife got me an Xbox 360 for x-mas and I've been dying for HD since. I never thought it would be so easy to get my wife to agree to get this set but the minute she saw it she said BUY IT!!
Now I had to upgraded my entire HT System. Picked up Athena speakers all around and a Panny XR-55 Reciever. I luv HD.
BTW, I also like the DNie feature as I feel that most programming looks better with it on.
I also notice a very small bit of lag with my xbox 360. I only notice it on first person shooters but I am beginning to think it has to do with the wireless controlers more then the samsung set. Its such a small amount of lag that it has never bothered gameplay so I am loving the games on this set. My friends have seen this set and they are very impressed......and jealous. To all of the rest of you new Kirk owners - ENJOY!
Supermans 04-28-06, 12:07 PM These are the specs of the TV. The pedestal model has a sharper picture quality than the tabletop models for sure. And also, this TV is the only one in the Samsung lineup to ever use the HD2++ chip which is even better than the already widely acclaimed HD2+. As far as I know, the HLR5087W uses five image processors and a six-times density enhancer which makes this set unique and a more expensive all around set at the time.

alexr214 04-29-06, 11:35 AM Ha sany body had their kirk professionally calibrated. I am wondering whether the change in PQ is actually worth the price of getting it calibrated. I don't feel particularly comfortable going into the service menu myself. Does anyone know if someone has posted a walkthrough of the service menu with preferrable settings? That would be interesting to read.
Supermans 04-29-06, 12:21 PM This set is one of the few that you don't need to go into the service menu to get NTSC standards. All you need to do is pop in Star Wars A nEw Hope THX optimizer, and adjust the black levels with the THX logo screen. The colors are already very accurate on Standard and Warm 1. Leave Dnie on all the time since it does improve all input signals (unless you like fuzzy film). I use the DVPNS75H, and all I did was change the DVD settings to Cinema 2, and lowered the brightness on te Samsung by 2 on standard. If you are using a different DVD player, you might need to raise brightness. There is no need to mess with the service menu with this TV, or the color. Also note, the older Kirk models had different DLP chips and different Dnie settings which some people didn't like.
sweston 05-01-06, 09:30 AM I agree. I didn't need to change much other than contrast and brightness with the thx optimizer on some dvd I had.
I agree w/ supermans.
I have both Sound & Vision and AVIA and fell that I do not need to calibrate anything. Picture on dvd movies (set on cinema) looks bad A$$.
And while watching movies off HD Tuner I set as "standard" and wow.
Overall so far, very nice unit.
As for moving it to upstairs it was a challenge. Its all 1 piece and I found it best to hold it on the glass bottom to get it up there. :)
SeanTibbs 05-02-06, 10:38 PM I have the HL-R5087W Samsund DLP pedestal TV. Can anyone provide me with great custom settings for high def viewing. I had it set nicely on dynamic for sports and standard for DVD's and casual viewing but all the sudden the darker areas started looking even darker. There was detail in the black areas but that went away. I don't know if my settings were tampered with or what so I just reset them all. If anyone has found great settings for contrast, brightness and everything else please help me out thanks! I usually watch in Standard but prefer sports in Dynamic. Cinema seems a bit too dark for anything. Help me out, thanks guys.
Sean,
I keep my settings on warm.
As for TV viewing. I leave it on standard. No color adjustments. I can look again, but last time I saw the Spurs playing.... I choked on my popcorn b/c I felt like yelling. It seemed that I was "in the game" ;)

Hi Sean, after so many hours of bulb usage, the brightness of the TV lowers slightly. This happened about threemonths or so of many hours of watching. I too noticed the blacks being a bit darker. You have to re-adjust your TV's settings (brightness up slightly, and contrast) You have to set the modes in the light you are watching the TV in. THX optimizer is the best for a fast calibration, and you probably have a DVD with it inside. For standard HD OTA, you do the same since for each input, the settings need to be changed as well.
alexr214 05-08-06, 12:41 PM Has anyone tried connecting a PC to this set. I know that it doesn't have a PC DVI input but I know that there are several converters out there and was wondering how, if at all, I could connect my PC to this set. Any one have any ideas?

Yes, I have my PC hooked up to the HLR5087W all the time. I run a screensaver 24/7 when people are over. You have to set the resolution simply to 1280 * 720 at 60HZ. I have an Nvidia card Geforce Ti 4200. You have to go into the settings and adjust for overscan, but that's no big deal and takes a few minutes. No HDCP or handshake worries thru HDMI. You can play DVD's, online content, screensavers..etc.. Now, you have to go into the settings of the screensavers and make sure the resolution is set correctly in there. If not, you will have some items stretched and it won't look right.
.............Still enjoying it :D
funkmonky 05-13-06, 08:17 PM Ok, I've had the 5087 for a few months now. I've only watched SD analog cable and DVD's . I don't have any fancy equipment or cables so I'm sure that I haven't seen my TV at it's best. My impressions so far:
All in all, a good buy. Some channels are clearer than others (not the TV's problem), and from my previous post, it's not as blocky as I had first seen in store. I've growned accustomed to it, plus when I do PIP, the small screen looks super clear. I do notice the rainbow effect sometimes, like when people are wearing striped shirts, but I also see green spots when I quickly look away or blink sometimes (this bothers me more than the rainbows), can't confirm when this usually happens. For the most part, the TV just looks awesome even when it's off. I just wish it had the glossy or glass coat over the screen (just seems to make the picture more vibrant on TV's that have em, in my opinion). Lastly, it just feels weird watching any other TV.
My questions:
Since this is a widescreen TV, when I pop in a widescreen DVD, I still get the black bars across the top and bottom of the screen, no matter what picture mode. I'm under the impression that since the TV and DVD are both wide, shouldn't it fill the whole screen (full screen DVD's do, I thought these would have vertical lines on the side). Maybe I just have things backwards.
Also, I'd like to see how HD looks, and I can get local programming with rabbit ears. When I switch to the antenna for over the air HD, like the NBA playoffs on ABC, shouldn't my signal be HD? It looks at best, slightly better than the cable; am I doing something wrong cause I don't think it is HD.
Time to watch the Spurs n Mavs, hopefully in HD if someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong within the next hour.
Thanks for the help.
mehulkapadia 05-16-06, 05:38 PM I am planning to buy this set in the next day or so - but was wondering how long the lamp typically lasts? Can everyone post the number of hours on theirs lamps, and any other info on lamp life?
Thanks.
I was told can last up to or over 10,000 hrs
My, My... look at that : http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1648787&sku=S223-5014&CMP=ILC-DLP
I basically got the same deal, but had to mess w/ a $200.00 rebate for the same price. Great deal btw.
PastorDan 05-24-06, 12:05 PM How does this model (the HLR5087) compare to the HLS5086, which I could probably get for a couple hundred more? Is the HLS model worth the extra money? Thanks for any replies, because I'm seriously considering the Tigerdirect deal.

I would act fast. I just made my order yesterday and the sales person called back to confirm the order and mensioned they only had a few sets left.
DC Wuff 05-24-06, 05:51 PM My shipment (ordered Sunday night) is on its way from TigerDirect. Too bad I won't get it until after Memorial Day...
GeneralG40 05-24-06, 07:03 PM Anyone know if there is a A/V rack stand setup that is made specifically for the R5087w? I'm just about to pull the trigger and buy the Sammy from TigerDirect.... but was curious if anyone had any pictures of the stand if there is one made for this tv to hold my xbox, H/K RX, HTPC etc....????
GeneralG40 05-24-06, 07:15 PM Well I answered my own question......
http://www.samsungparts.com/part_detail.asp?catalog_name=Parts+and+Accessories&%20category_name=&product_id=TR85&search_model=HLR5087W
But where to find it is another question....
This panel is so nice. Jay Leno looks like he's in my face. DVDs upconvert or not even upconvert on my HD850 (HDMI hookup) looks fabulous!! You guys will love this unit. My only challenge was to take it up-stairs.
I found it best to carry it by the glass, but you have to bend down a good bit to accomplish that :)

Hi y'all,
My first post. I received the unit from Tigerdirect yesterday. Can anyone give suggestions on how to grip the unit. Is it safe to hold it by the glass base? The design is so funky that I can't figure out where to grip it. Also, how do you guys like the build quality? I was a little disappointed at the fit & finish. Mine had small knicks (only visible up close) at the bottom of the screen and a few black smudges. Nothing too bad, but I guess I'm really picky.
Thanks!

If you have stairs where you meet incline, pick up by the glass (2 people/buddy system). If your just moving it around the room. Pick it up by the sides of the tv/panel area and make small foot steps b/c you can stub your toes on the glass panel. Its akward, but that was my only solution. Or of you want. carry it like a sofa. one person on the back side of the panel and other person below by the glass (in front) and carry it that way.
GeneralG40 05-31-06, 04:30 PM Look what just arrived!!! Thanks to TigerDirect for the great deal!

Optic Anomalies 06-02-06, 11:07 AM I received my HL-R5087 (from Tigerdirect) last week and the OPPO971h yesterday and all I can say is WOW!! Out of the box I did need to tweak the TV because my non-hd dish picture was very so-so, but DVD's are quite spectacular. I did like most here and researched till my brain hurt but dang $1499 for a TV of this caliber is a steal in my book. I do think people are correct about this model being superior to other HL-R's.
DC Wuff 06-02-06, 12:32 PM Just received my HL-R5087W yesterday. I am completely blown away. I was up until 2AM watching Batman Begins on HBOHD (I think). HD looks incredible, DVDs upconverted to 720p rock, and even the crappiest of SD stations (DC Channel 20) looks quite good. Here are my connections:
Comcast HD DVR Set-Top Box
- Monster Coax In (FWIW)
- Monster Component Video to TV (will likely change to HDMI after I buy another cable and an HDMI switch/splitter)
- Audio Line Out to TV for normal viewing
- Optical Digital Audio to Sony 7.1 HT Receiver for Surround
Samsung Combo Upconvert DVD/Hi-Fi VHS Player
- Monster HDMI to TV
- Coaxial Digital Audio to HT Receiver (will likely change to Optical after I buy another cable)
- A/V Line Out to TV for VHS Playback
- A/V Line Out from TV to HT Receiver for VHS or OTA Surround
No Coax is touching this TV!
Also have the PS2 connected, but haven't tried it yet.
Haven't messed with the picture settings at all (it's set on Standard/Warm1 out of the box). The TV displays 4:3 content as-is, HD is full 16:9 glory, and DVD is dependent on the title (some -- like Finding Nemo -- go full 16:9, and some -- like The Incredibles and The Matrix -- are slightly letterboxed).
I am ecstatic that I got this nice of a TV for $1499 and free shipping. They appear to be sold out at TigerDirect now, but I highly recommend this unit if you can find it, especially for the first-time HD buyer. Even when it's turned off, it looks very nice in the room with that pedestal and all.
Yet another satisfied "Kirk" owner!!
daddyyankee 06-02-06, 03:42 PM Does anyone think it is a good idea to stock up on lamps for this model since it is discontinued? Will lamps still be available in 4 yrs? 10 yrs? Will lamp prices go up or down?
Thanks
thekicker 06-02-06, 04:54 PM I had a hard time finding the right forum to ask this... but this is the TV that I have so I figure its a start. :)
Is there any way I can view PAL-M programming on this TV?
dealsleuth 06-03-06, 05:24 PM Which one is better of the two:
1. Vizio P42HDTV
2. Samsung HL-R5087W (50" DLP with Pedestal)
I already have the Vizio but I am planning to retun it in Costco to get the Samsung DLP w/Pedestal.
I am never going to mount the TV on the wall.
Is it a good idea to return the Vizio and get the Samsung instead?
Supermans 06-04-06, 06:01 PM Congratulations on your purchase. $1,500 is a steal and it is true that this is the best 720p of the HLR line. I find it better than the 1080p HLS line when viewing DVD's on my Sony upconverter DVPNS75H. It does an excellent job taking the over the air signal that is 1080i and making it 720p. Excellent TV for the money.
I wouldn't stock up on lamps just yet. I don't think you will have any trouble finding lamps for this model in the future. Samsung does a good job supporting older products and this one is no exception. We can all help each other out by finding the best online lamp website that gives us the best prices.
WoW.. great comments all. This unit rocks. I enjoy it so much more then my old Z1 projector on a 120" screen. Well ok..... allot better. hehehe
Also picked up one for my mom from TigerDirect. I definitely prefer the picture on this one compared to my sister's Sony LCD...and paid 1/2 the cost!
HD DVD looks sweet on my Sammy!!
optimalgoku 07-12-06, 09:35 PM After much research and whatnot I finally ordered my 5087w, I was going to go with TigerDirect but they are all out and were unresponsive to my emails. Anyways just wanted to say hi to everyone and thank you for all your prior posts, without all the input I probably would have made a wrong choice :)
Dave
Dave,
Welcome aboard. Let us know your 1st impressions of the 5087w ;)
optimalgoku 07-20-06, 05:27 PM Ok I took a half day today because it was scheduled to arrive and when i opened my garage I was greeted with the largest box I had seen in some time (quite the introduction if I may say so) So after hours of cleaning moving and set up, I finally got to watch it and I am not dissappointed one bit. This is my first big post college, real job purchase. Dvds have been AMAZING! I watched some of lost on my samsung upconverting dvd player and i love samsung. Anyways I'm gettin time warner :( hd cable tomorrow, so that will be another great day i'm sure :)
alright time is flying so back to the 5087w

Call Samsung. You should have warrenty. I say don't take it apart b/c it might void your warrenty or if you bust something then that be bad news. :(
For anyone with a TR85 stand - what is the height between the shelves?
IE: How high of a component can I fit on a shelf?
Thanks
Supermans 10-23-06, 08:11 AM Also picked up one for my mom from TigerDirect. I definitely prefer the picture on this one compared to my sister's Sony LCD...and paid 1/2 the cost!
Yes it is much better than even the Sony Bravia 1080p which I just purchased for the bedroom at $4,500. It is amazing quality regardless of what the input. High Def looks the best and definately my Gamecube looks and plays great on it. My friend brought over his 360 and now he's ordering one as well after playing Fight Night.
Jasons38 11-26-06, 08:56 PM I have the HLR5087w and have a question. I had a service tech come and replace my signal processing board. This fixed an issue I was having with all the inputs except the HDMI. Now when the TV is off the standby light flashes off every 30 seconds. I called the service tech and he didn't know. He said to call Samsung. I called Samsung and their tech support said they could not find anything about this. Just wondering if there is any techs out there that might have an idea? I reset the TV by unplugging overnight. Everything seems to work fine on the TV except for the blinking standby light.
Thanks,
Jason

Wow you think PQ is better with this 720P HDTV then a 1080p Bravia?! Not bad for a 2-3 year old HDTV.
SeanTibbs 12-31-07, 09:48 PM I know it's been a while but has anyone tried any of the new Blu-Ray players on this TV? I mean it it worth it knowing this set only does 720P? I saw a Samsung LCD in Bestbuy playing Batman at 720P and it looked killer.
I'm looking to buy the New Samsung BD-UP5000 which plays Blu-Ray and HD Discs to use with this set.
Any suggestions out there?
SeanTibbs 01-06-08, 01:34 AM BUMP BUMP, anyone alive out there?
Speedskater 01-06-08, 11:16 AM I have a HLR-5087W, but I don't have a Blu-Ray player.
What possible problems do you anticipate ?
SeanTibbs 01-15-08, 06:19 PM None I was curious to know how well the blu-ray worked with it in regards to picture quality.
I have the PS3 Blu-ray hooked up to a HLN617. The picture quality is amazing! Make sure on the player you disable 1080i so it will convert every thing to 720p. It also does a fantastic job of up converting standard DVDs.
SeanTibbs 01-29-08, 08:18 PM Thanks buddy
How's everyone's pedestal tv's holding up? Mine died sometime last year and haven't gotten it fixed yet.
sweston 03-11-09, 11:22 PM Alive and kicking still. I built a shelf for the top to hold my center channel a year or so ago. Media Center HTPC and receiver sits below the TV. Still love the picture.
