caesar1 12-22-06, 05:06 PM Does anyone know how these speakers are mounted?
Do they need to go in studs?
I was just in the new media room in my new house being built, and the HVAC people are putting a return right where the side surround speakers have to go. My seats will be directly next to that return.
The stud I will need to use is circled in this picture:
http://ericbeth.home.comcast.net/stud.jpg
Will there be a problem using this stud. When the return is finished, there will be metal hammered into the stud to hold the return in place. Will I be able to hammer the mounting plate for my ADP 590 side surrounds into that stud?

It's hard to tell from the picture, but is that the corner of the room? If so you won't want to have your surrounds there, if it's not the corner, is there a post there? That wouldn't be good either, but maybe it's just the picture which makes it looks that way.. The other issue may be vibrations, if your 590 is right up against the return, someone else probably would be able to answer that better than I.....Good luck.

No -- that is not the corner of the room. The room is 20 feet deep -- and that is about 11 feet back from the sceen. So around the middle of the room.
There is a post there -- it is unavoidable. But the post is 2 feet away from the wall. The ADPs are 7 inches in depth -- so there's room. If the ADP sits there, the null will be where the post is -- so that's not a big deal -- the woofer will fire at it (but I'll deal with that when calibrating via the receiver). The higher frequencies will fire around the post. I have to deal with the post no matter what.
As far as vibrations, my house is coming with a furnace with a variable speed fan (Carrier Infinity 96). This means it does not run full blast all the time. It should be quieter. I don't think vibrations will be an issue.
The only question I have is, can you nail something into a stud, where the return is also nailed partly into the same stud work?

The ADPs do not need to be mounted to a stud. Dry wall anchors will also do the trick. I have my Signature ADPs mounted into drywall using two 50 lbs drywall anchors for each mount (the screw in type).
BTW you use screws not nails secure the ADP mounting plate. If you do want to put the mounting plate on the same stud that the AC return is attached, I doubt the screws would go deep enough to hit the nails used to moun the AC return.

Is that part of the standard mounting equipment -- or did you buy special anchors?
What does Paradigm supply and recommend? I can't find anything on their mounts for the ADPs.
If I don't use the stud, I would need to mount them right where that return is -- would that be a problem -- running dry-wall screws right in the middle of those 2 studs? That's actually where I originally wanted it to go (as that's exactly 11 feet back from the screen wall -- and my ears will be at 11 feet).
I thought I would have to go to the stud -- which is 11' 6" from the screen wall. Still should be in the null though, I would think. Even 6 inches off from ideal?
Looks to me like you have the perfect opportunity right now, before the walls go up, to add an extra horizontal bracing 2x4, in front of the return duct, between the two vertical studs. Hammer in the extra brace where you want to mount the bracket.

I got the drywall anchors from Home Depot. I believe they are called EZ Anchors. They are rated at 50 lbs each and you use two for each speaker bracket.
You may be able to secure the mounts over the duct, but you will need at least 1.5 inches between the back of the drywall and the face of the duct to ensure that the anchors don't puncture the duct.
However, moving the speaker back six ichces will also be fine. You can place a dipole speaker directly to the side or slightly behind the listening postion, you just don't want them even slightly in front of the listening position. For that matter, I prefer having them slightly behind. So I would say, go for the stud location.

Is this true about dipole placement even for a 7.1 situation? I will have 2 Paradigm Atoms on the back walls as the rears. This will not be just 5.1.

Except that I would have to sneak in and do it myself or ask the builder to do it. Either scenario would not be easy.
caesar1 12-23-06, 10:07 AM As long
as you don't penetrate the ductwork with the lumber, just mount it in
front, you are not breaking any codes (I should know, I have a VA.
master's mechanical license). All you need is 1-1/2 " clearance to fit a
2x4 on end. Are you having a whole new house built? Go into the
bathrooms or kitchen, if the builder is doing his job, he should have
installed similar "nailers" where other things such as towel racks and
cabinets are being hung.
Good point! I am having a "pre-drywall walk-through" with the builder on Wednesday. I will ask him to put in a "nailer" in between those studs at the 6 foot height (the height where I want the speaker). That way I'll have the option to hang the speaker either in between the studs or on the studs.
Great. (I deleted my post, after reading it, I felt it was a little too offensive :) ) Actually, if the lumber is set in long side up, you could even go with something larger, such as a 2x6, 2x8, etc.
blowingass 12-23-06, 11:42 AM Having blown my xmas $$$ on gifts - I'm somewhat hesitant to spend an extra $1K on a trade up from Monitor 9 V.3's to Studio 60 V.4's. Unfortunately I only have today to decide before my 6 month upgrade time limit is over... Any opinions??

Take the gifts back, get the speakers. :D
Are you happy with the 9s, if so pass on the upgrade? If you think the 9s are lacking then take the plunge.
I finally pulled the trigger today and have begun my Paradigm system build. My fronts (Studio20 V.4 & CC-590) should be delivered in about 2 weeks. :p
BTW - My dealer said he wouldn't mix the CC-590 & the V.3's. He says he doesn't think the new tweeter will match, even though the difference is supposed to be minimal.

Brougt my speakers home today and one of the Studio 20's is defective. :(
The sound is raspy & turns to static when the volume is raised. I switched speakers to make sure it wasn't any of my source equipment. Returned it to the dealer, who will repair or replace, hopefully some time next week. This is the first bad V.4 speaker they have encountered.

sincere 12-24-06, 02:11 AM Could someone tell me what the differences between the V3's and V2's are? In the studio series?
I was thinking of going to the V3's would it be much of an upgrade?
mmeysarosh 12-24-06, 02:35 AM I had posted the info below in an earlier thread;
I currently have the Studio 60 v.2 and have had a chance to listen to the v.3 and v.4 incarnations as well.
From the technical stand point, the v.3 has a and improved cabinet structure, 7' midrange drivers instead of 6.5' or 8', the midrange also includes a phase pug for better dispersion. The bass drivers also move the a consistent 7' driver instead of 6.5' or 8' drivers. The tweeter is also a new design and has been anodized with satin to improve rigidity without a weight penalty. All drivers are mounted using a gasket to separate the drivers fromt he cabinet called IMS shockmount. New crossover design, improved binding posts, and a die cast port.
The v.4 update is a change in diaphragm materials of the tweeter to the gold anodized aluminum used in the Signature speakers. This does not make it the Signature tweeter as there is a few more improvements in a variety of areas for that driver. The midrange diaphragm also changes from the mica loaded polymer to aluminum with satin anodizing.
Sound wise, its very evolutionary. The v.3 change being the major update in design exhibits improved imaging, transparency, and tonal balance. The v.4 update takes a small but audible improvement in transparency with slightly better controlled highs.

I don't think that six inches behind the listening position is going to make any appreciable difference. But, directly to the sides would probably be optimal in a 7.1 set-up.

So I take it that going from the V2 to the V3 would be a huge upgrade and well worth the money?
mmeysarosh 12-24-06, 11:26 AM Going from the v.2 to the v.3 will be an upgrade, but YMMV depending on model.
With the Studio 100 the changes in sound stage and image are more significant then any of the smaller models. They all have an improved top end that is more resolved and less fatiguing. They all have more dynamic midrange sound with makes the music more involving. Bass depth on the other hand is not quite as deep when comparing the 100's.
But the improvements are not per se 'huge', it's evolutionary. Take a good system and make it better in almost every way. When you initially listen you may be dismayed that changes are although noticeable, are not astounding. As time moves one, you notice that you will enjoy listening to music more often. This is what I believe is the most important aspect.

The studio 100 is a complete change over as well, the v3 has an additional driver and updated tweeter, also new cabinet design. I heard someone here say the v2 has a little better bass? I'm not sure, never heard the v.2's, I have v.3's....
I would google them, there are a ton of reviews and descriptions of both...
darryls 12-24-06, 05:28 PM Hi, I just bought a Paradigm CC-370 and would like to know if I should set the crossover on my amp for it to 80 hz or 100hz? I have a nice sub a little dated but it works okay. It is a 5.1 system. The amp has a 3 crossover bridge. I have the fronts set at 80hz and the rears at 100hz and the center is set to 80 right now. Should I set it to 100hz or leave it at 80hz?
Thanks and Merry Christmas.
redsandvb 12-25-06, 12:55 AM The new CC190 blows the old CC370 away. It was a great improvement for Paradigm.
-K
Wow, really? Is that the general consensus? I've been looking to upgrade my center for a while now, been using a v3 CC-170 w/ v3 Monitor 5's up front. The size of the CC-190 is just about right for the space I have.
Anyone else comoared the CC-190 to the CC-370?
Thanks!

Set it to 100hz, play your favorite DVD. Does it sound better or worse? If better leave it at 100, if worse set it back at 80hz. Repeat as many times as necessary to make an informed decision.

I find the v3 was a big change from v1 and v2. v4 is a minor change from v3, almost as if Paradigm wanted to update the series to give "fresh" look.

I mostly agree with this but I find two issues with the v.3 series, with particuar regards to the 100's.
1) The Studio 100 v.3 are efficient but has a brutal impedence plot. Many intended customers will not pair it with an appropriate amp.
2) There is an elevated treble but it seems in line to the more prominent bass with the 100's. Even though is appears to be in line with the extended bass, it can cause some fatigue on many recordings. It is althought quite clean and can be beneficial in a home theater setup.
The v.4 does seem to take a step to improve this. I would agree on calling it more of an adjustment, but still IMO an important one.
BadAspSVT 12-26-06, 10:43 AM Hey guys, new to this forum but a proud Paradigm owner.
I have the cc-570 center and a pair of studio 20's v.2 for the rears. My question is about hanging the 20's on the wall - I want to mount them up above and to the rear of my seating area, but I am not sure of what hardware to use? If I build a shelf I will not be able to tweak the angles as well as I am sure I will want to, but I have not seen any brackets for mounting these. I believe they are about 25 lbs each.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

We had a discussion about this awhile ago and this was the name that kept on popping up.
Haven't done it personally so i can't vouch.

That happened to me to when I did a system for a friend a couple of weeks ago. A 20 right out of the box sounded all distorted. My dealer ordered a new driver.

I think the V.4 is a medium-big improvement over the V.3.
In fact I'm selling my year old V.3's right now if anybody is interested.

My setup currently consists of a Phantoms and a CC170 up front and titans in the rear (SVSPB10 sub). The whole system is only about 6 mths old but after doing some research I've decided I'd like to upgrade the center. I was planning to get the CC270 however I've discovered that the Paradigm lineup has changed a bit.
I assumed the 290 was a replacement for the 270 but is seems that may not be the case?
I plan to upgrade to the Monitor or Studio line at some point (2 yrs?) but don't want the center to be out of line with the Phantoms and Titans until then.
What are your recommendations? Should I even upgrade the center at this point.
Thanks
samilou 12-26-06, 08:25 PM I recently bought a pair of Studio 100 V.4, as I knew going in my old Yamaha receiver did not have enough juice to power them. The sales rep suggested going with an amp instead of purchasing a new receiver. He offered me an out of box Anthem PVA-7 for 1300, was this amp a steal at this price point or could i have done better? I love the sound the amp produces and having biwired them i feel it is plenty of power for my listening levels. Appreciate any feedback, thanks.

It looks like that amp has been priced at $1499 since at least 2001. You may have been able to do a little better than $200 off, but then again it's not a high priced amp to begin with, so I think you did ok. It has gotten very good reviews from everything I have read, but as long as you love the way it sounds, thats the most important thing....
Currently running my steup (Studio 20s, CC470, ADP470 & Servo 15) with a Yammie 1200. Exploring options to get a little more out of it and wondering if the receiver is a good place to start. Depending on how end-year bonus goes I can see the range being up to 5K for something that really stands out but looking to stay in the 1-2K range. Key thing is how to make a noticeable improvement. Mainly tv/dvd usage. New to the forum and would appreciate any help.

No it's not the general concensus at all. The CC190 has marginally crisper highs than the CC370, but the CC370 is a 120W centre channel whereas the CC190 is only an 80W, so you need to be careful if you're planning to drive the CC190 with the common 100-120W per channel receiver.
The CC290 would be a good replacement for the CC370, not the CC190.

At 130W per channel and only $824.99 you could do a lot worse than the Pioneer VSX82TX Elite receiver.

I actually don't know if the servo is the v2. Also, as an addon to my original, the Yammie is working fine so I'm really looking at upgrading and upgrading to something that will result in a noticeable difference.
Mitch G 12-27-06, 06:07 PM Has anyone auditioned the new Monitor 7 speakers yet?
I listened to them for half an hour or so and thought they sounded a bit harsh.
I only have "lowly" Atoms so I'm willing to concede that maybe I'm not hearing them right. So, I would like to hear what others have to say about them.
Mitch
Maximum7 12-27-06, 07:16 PM I listened to the new 7's. I thought they sounded great minus the treble. They were the floor demos so they had to have been broken in. They sounded very sibliant too me as well. I compared them with Milinea 200's and then Studio 20's. The 20's blew them both away. I like the bass and mids of the 7's better than the M200, but the 200's did better in the highs. I don't know what Paradigm did to the tweet on the new version. They didn't have that harshness before.
Oh yeah, I'm still selling my year old V3. Studio 60's, 20's, and CC570

The CC290 would be a good replacement for the CC370, not the CC190.
Thanks dobyblue.
Mitch G 12-27-06, 08:44 PM I listened to the new 7's.
Right. That's what I felt too - nice speaker but for the treble - but I thought the bass it was putting out was a bit boomy at times.

Kal Rubinson 12-27-06, 09:05 PM Hi guys...
Fairly new to the whole home audio scene but I'm eyeing a pair of Studio 60 speakers to be used predominantly for music listening...
Can anyone tell me the current version that is being sold, 3, 4?v4.
Maximum7 12-27-06, 09:07 PM The room I was in with them, I heard no boominess. In fact it puzzles me when people say the 7's can be boomy. Sure they might not be the last word in definition, but I wouldn't call them boomy.

The current version is 4, although some dealers still might have V.3's
lentiman 12-28-06, 03:08 PM Hey that's funny, I just saw your listing on craigslist!
60's, 20's, CC-570.

Don't think there is a general consensus. There appears to be agreement that the 4s are an improvement over the 3s, it's up for debate if it is a big improvement.
Where do you plan to audition the Pdigms?

wheelzbat 12-29-06, 12:13 AM Hello, My current set up is: Studio 60 v2 and Studio CC in front and cheapy JBL bookshelfs for surround. I currently hide the JBL's behind my TV and set them out when I'm going to watch a movie, with wires dragging across the floor. I would like to set up a more permanent installation. I would like to get the Studio ADP's, but that is not in the budget. I do not listen to any multi-channel music. This will only be for movies. My only option for mounting is directly to the sides of the listening area. I have no room behind. I've seen from a couple of other people, that they use the Atoms as surrounds. Does anyone have any experience with these as surrounds? My budget is $300-$350 USD. Also, should I consider in-ceiling speakers also? This is my first post on the forum. I really enjoy reading the forums.
Thanks!

Not as much of an improvement as the 3s were over the 2s, but the 4s are much better looking than the threes and also use the tweeter from the Signature v1 line.
Has anyone auditioned the new Monitor 7 speakers yet?
I listened to them for half an hour or so and thought they sounded a bit harsh.
I only have "lowly" Atoms so I'm willing to concede that maybe I'm not hearing them right. So, I would like to hear what others have to say about them.
Mitch
I was amazed at how small they were compared to the 7v4, but I did not audition them.
I did audition the 11v5 and was VERY impressed by the overall sound. Not too bright and very nice tight deep bass. I was using Crystal Method - Tweekend and Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets for my auditions.

Hey Keith Welcome to AVS !!! I haven't heard the Atoms... and I don't think I would do ceiling rear speakers... but thats just me.. Maybe you could find some older model ADP's Studio 20's for rears.. Just lookin around at prices on ebay, they seem a little more then your willing to spend... Im sure the AToms would be great, and I know my dealer has a set he would love to get rid of....

I have the previous version of the Atoms (Paradigm just released a new lineup with a new Atom). I use them for surrounds (and mains). My room layout puts the main seating right against a wall. So, as per a Dolby-approved diagram I found somewhere on the web one time, I mounted the surrounds using wall mounts - a mount from B-Tech, I think? that clamps to the bottom of the speaker instead of screwing into it. They are positioned a couple of feet outside the ends of the couch and a couple of feet above the back of the couch and are aimed towards eachother. This configuration works quite well and the Atoms are very capable in this capacity. Heck, they work quite well as mains (along with a decent sub).
The new Atoms are $250/pair. And, you could probably get the previous version on clearance for less.
Hope this helps,
Mitch

It is interesting to me that people don't think that there isn't that big of a diiference between V3 and V4. I think there is a big difference. I mean they completely changed the driver set. They went away from that "debatable" mid driver and changed the tweeter. In the previous versions, they didn't change the drivers at all. In fact I don't know what they changed other than slight variances to the cabinet and some internals. (?)
The sound to me is, clearer and sounds less boxy/B&W to me. Especially in the mids. The refined treble is just icing on the cake. I personally think Paradigm got it right with this version.
Oh yeah, my awesome V3 speakers are still for sale....:)

Thanks Guys, I found a dealer with a couple of demo pairs of Atoms. I'm going to check them out and complare them to the new Atom's with the titanium tweeter. I would think I could get the demo's for a decent price. After doing some research, I'm definately going with small speakers and not in-ceiling.
Thanks again!

Im slated to get the new .v4 Studio 100's, CC-690, and 590 - ADP's
Now, I could buy a high powered receiver, like a Elite 84, which has all the bells and whistles... which is less power...
Or I could buy a ROTEL 1095 AMP rated at 200 x 5 and then buy a cheaper receiver to be a pre/pro... and get a decent Pre/Pro when the next batch comes out...
Im not in a huge hurry, as I would like to get it right the first time..

buy seperates and a cheap preo/pro now, as going with a dedicated amp is the best choice, and wait for the "next batch" of receivers. My 2cents.

I took a quick look at that Pioneer and even though I do think it would power the setup, I would still likely prefer something with bit more oomph. The Pioneer has that typical receiver overstatement of power. It is UL rated to draw 530w maximum from the wall, more then enough to power the speakers while in stereo, change that two a surround setup with some high dynamics and it may come short.
The Rotel should be a good choice as long as you are getting a fair price. Very few receivers on the markety can proide that kind of power and the ones that can cost considerbly more or run digital amps. Digital amps are getting quite good but have not matched the linear desings out there.
I would recommend that you also look at few amps if possible to get an idea of the sonic signature of the Rotel. The ones to try would be from Anthem (Paradigms own electronics), a used Bryston 9B-SST as the warranty is fully transferable, Parasound, Outlaw, and few others that some forum members could easily let you know about. It would be really great if you compare them side by side to get an idea of the each amps signature. From what I have heard the Rotel tends to be rich and laid back. What works for you is of course, a personal preference.

Hi Warp, I would go separates. You can always get a dedicated pre/pro down the road. Plus, you will definately need separates to properly push those 100's. I have the 60's v.2 and I wish I had separates. I use a Denon AVR 3300. I like the Denon, but I know these speakers can do better with more true power.
Good luck,
Keith
Warpdrv 12-30-06, 12:11 PM Thanks for the advice guys... that was my first instinct, guess I shouldn't deviate..
Well my price is less then $2k for an amp... and the Rotel, and the Earthquake fit into that budget... I will go new.. not into used, as I like the first hand warranty..
I was reading that the Rotels match up quite nicely with the Paradigms, and when I heard them together in the store, I was extremely happy with the sound. So I guess that will be the way to go.
I really need a video switching device, but upconversion receivers are just too much $$, If Im going to wait, for next batch of HDMI stuff to come out of CES, so I was thinking about towards the Pioneer 1016, but it doesn't have an 12v. trigger
I could use some links for building one... or buying one....
Can't you just hack a 1/8 plug onto a cell phone charger...
Thanks so much guys...

Are they quoting retail prices there? The Monitor 7 v5 is listed in their PDF at $649/pair, and most of the places I've seen quote the Monitor 7 at $799 retail. Audio Emporium also seems to be mis-labeling the dimensions, and the sizes of the bass and mid drivers (Paradigm's site lists them at 6.5" while Audio Emporium lists them at 5.25"). Has there been a big change to the Monitor 7 for the v5 refresh?

A dealer said that the Rosenut finish costs 10% more than the black finish on the V.4 Studios. Is that correct? Weren't all the finishes the same price on the V.3? I know a while back there was an option to get real wood sides that cost more, but that went away when the Signature series came out.

A salesperson at a store near Toronto that sells new and used Paradigm said that the black is easiest to sell used and that the light finish (Maple?) is hardest.

I'll take some offense at that remark since I'm one of those who thinks the v.5 Monitor 7 is harsh with some boominess. :) Even though I'm not looking to buy 20s. :) (Note the smilies.)
You make a good point that it might just have been room acoustics. After spending a bit more time at my nearby dealer, I'm less and less convinced that they really know what they are doing over there. Unfortunately this dealer doesn't allow for in-home auditions and I wasn't willing purchase the 7s and hope for the best.
However, I found out there is another Paradigm dealer about 45 minutes away that does allow for in-home auditions. So, I'm keeping an open mind for the 7s and will see if I can get a set in my house for some listening time.

WebEffect 12-31-06, 02:50 PM I'm wondering if Bi-wiring Paradigm speakers, specifically the Studio 60's ver.4 and CC590 makes any difference? Anyone know or have experience with this?
I've heard people say that the old monitor 7s and the studio 60s are boomy compared to the studio 20s and 40s. I don't see that in the measurements and neither sounded boomy to me at my friend's house. I wonder if some people like the smaller speakers because they don't go as low and are easier to place. If you place the floorstanders (old monitor 7 or studio 60) against a wall or near corners, they can sound boomy, but that would be the case with any floorstander with decent bass extension. Smaller speakers may be less susceptible to this, especially if crossed over higher to a sub. I don't know if this is the reason, but I liked the sound of both. I liked the treble on the monitor 7, but when my friend upgraded to the studio 60 V3, the treble was slightly smoother, but the midrange was smoother and larger sounding.
JohnGZ28 12-31-06, 03:02 PM I'm wondering if Bi-wiring Paradigm speakers, specifically the Studio 60's ver.4 and CC590 makes any difference? Anyone know or have experience with this?
A quick thread search will give you some info on this. Best thing you can do is try it. If you hear a difference great, if not, no big deal.
One of the fun things about having good equipment is to play around with it to find out what sounds best to you.
I doubt that bi-wiring makes a difference if you have good speaker cable and reasonably short runs, but bi-amping did make a difference on the 60s. My friend has the Studio 60s with a Denon 887 receiver that can bi-amp. At high volumes the bass seems a little more distinct and the treble stays smoother. The difference was not night and day, but we both had the same impression.
Maximum7 12-31-06, 03:29 PM I agree with John G. I think you should just try it for yourself. I used to bi-wire my 7's just beause, but I never heard any difference. I am, however, just running crappy, bottom of the barrel electronics (Anthem and ATI) so maybe that's why I couldn't tell a difference.
On my 60's I am not bi-wiring and I am doing long runs of like 30 feet. I read somewhere that for long runs it could be beneficial, but I am too lazy to find out.
Just try messing around and let us know what YOU think.

I agree with this as well. Alot of times you'll read in a review and the reviewer has them pulled out like 3+ feet from the back wall and stuff. http://www.paradigm.com/Website/SiteReferenceProduct/RReviews/Reference/AudioVideo/AudioVideoStudio60.pdf

However, if you can manage to find dealers with v3 and v4, demo the speakers and hear the difference. My dealer did not have A/B setup but I heard v4 and it did not give me feeling that I must get it and pay extra $700CDN over v3.

http://www.si5.com/products.php?pID=4004Doubtful. The SuperT is severely power-limited, especially for HT use. Bi-amping with a pair of them will make little improvement for many reasons. I'd stick with the Denon for now.
BTW, the SuperT does nicely with my old Minimus-7s!

jlarosa 01-01-07, 02:08 PM I have the following configuration for my 5.1 setup.
Mini-Monitor for the fronts
Atoms for the backs
CC-350 for the center channel
Energy sub-woofer.
I recently got a flat panel TV and I have decided to not mount the TV on the wall. The CC-350 is too big to fit into my media center. I am considering replacing the CC-350 (about 6 yrs old) with a smaller center channel that would fit into my media center (Salamander Twin 20). I am considering the Mirage Omnisat center-channel. Will there be a problem using this center channel or any other non-Paradigm center channel with my 5.1 surround setup.
Thanks in advance for your help.

EdThe only thing that costs more is if you get the shielded version which is black. I can guarantee this 100%. If your dealer is charging you more for rosenut, he is screwing you.

Ryan45872 01-01-07, 03:12 PM The Studios are not realwood veneers so there is no price difference.
The only line is the Sig. that offers realwood veneers and charge more for upgraded veneers .

The quickest test is to compare pink noise on each, and if you don't hear a difference it should be fine.
darryls 01-01-07, 05:29 PM Hi, just bought a cc 370 and was looking at a pair of Mini Monitors to use for my surrounds. What you think would they work good for that?
What are your front speakers? The most important thing is that your front speakers match well. The mini monitor would be fine, best if you can mount them a few feet behind the sitting position. Some prefer dipole rear speakers, especially if you don't have much space behind where you sit.

I'm looking to add surrounds to my set up.... I don't have all the components yet but my set up will eventually be this:
Denon AVR2807
JBL E250 Sub
JBL E35 Center
Paradigm Studio 60's v.4
Surrounds?
I need to add surrounds to complete this set up... I will be using my HT for 75% music listening... I haven't auditioned surrounds yet but my question is as follows...
If I choose to stick with the Paradigm speakers, which model would best compliment my set up for my intended use?
The Studio ADP-590's or the Studio 20's?
Are the ADP-590's designed more so for movies or will they sound better than the Studio 20's when I'm using 5 channel stereo mode on the receiver?
you did not mention how close you will be setting from the rears
the 20's work for me but they are 6 feet behind me.i listen 50/50
music and movies.

I personally prefer dipoles for rears, but HT/Gaming/TV is what I use surrounds for. When I listen to music, I do straight two channel, so the rears are of no importance to me when it comes to music. If you will use the rears, check out both options, but the 20s would probably work the best.
And if you do Paradigm Studios for the fronts, make sure you stick in the Studio line for the center channel and surrounds for the best experience. It's best not to mix and match brands or lines of speakers with others except for a sub, it can be whatever brand you want.

. . . when I'm using 5 channel stereo mode on the receiver? You almost never want to use 5 channel stereo - parties might be the exception. Use DD PLII or DD PLIIx instead.

Contrary to every reply that I got here, Paradigm has confirmed that there now is a premium on certain finishes including Rosenut. I emailed back asking what the rational is since presumably the material cost of the vinyl and the labour is the same regardless of finish. I expected a reply today but have not yet received one.

Rosenut finish gives a "perception" of higher quality so they charge more for it???

Hawk_Eye 01-04-07, 11:40 AM Guys,
Last night I did Bi-amping setup on my Paradigm Studio 60s V3. My receiver allows 6&7th channels bi-amped with FL and FR channel. Wow, what a difference this made. High frequency sound got noticeably better with more control and finesse. Mid range got more deep and isolated. Also, the background sound got DEAD silent making visible sound MORE visible.
If your receiver (or separates) allows bi-amping, you should really give it a go.
roland61970 01-04-07, 11:58 AM I have also had good results bi-amping my setup. Studio 40s, CC-470. I am using 6 channels of a NADT973. Originally I was using the NAD for all 7 channels (SA-30 surrounds and SA-25 rears all in-wall) but couldn't let all of the amps in my Denon 3805 go unused, so hooked up the surrounds and rears to the Denon and use the NAD for just the mains and center. I agree with Hawk about the control. Just a little off the top on the highs in my hard walled room and it makes a huge difference.
bluemark81 01-04-07, 12:05 PM I agree with John G.
I do however agree that the 7 v5 did sound harsh in the treble when I heard them. The Millineas and the Studios in the same room, almost same spot. didn't.
Anthem = "bottom of the barrel electronics" I think you would get a large number who disagree with that statement including myself running Anthems PVA7 and AVM50 into Studio spaeakers. This combination is phenominal.
Are you sure you/they aren't talking about the Signatures? They do cost more for Rosenut vs. Cherrywood. The Studios are the same price.
-KI clearly stated Studios in my email. Further - the Signatures do not come in Rosenut (there is no such wood) but they are "called" Rosewood (Sigs are real wood but very unlikely real Rosewood).
If I get a response from my subsequent email it will be clear whether they made a mistake or not.

Is this real wood cabinet? No - vinyl.

Why are you selling your Studios? I currently have the black V3.0 60's, 20's, CC470 (wish it was the 570), and Seismic 10. Very pleased with the setup and even the 470. I'm not sure if I would notice a difference between the 470 and 570, but I wish I spent the extra for it in any case.
Maximum7 01-04-07, 05:20 PM I would think you'd be fine with the V2. I do'nt think they changed too much until you get to the V5. Especially since you already have the center channel.
...but then I could be dumb too.
Maximum7 01-04-07, 07:35 PM Why are you selling your Studios?
It's along story, but in a nutshell... I had 7seMk3's (before they became the monitor line) and went to the 60's and actually miss my 7's. I've hired a private investigator to try to find them so I can buy them back at twice the price I sold them, so I can get some sleep again at night.
I had the 470 and borrowed a 570 from my dealer and returned the 470. My buddy did the same thing. For each of us, the 570 sounded clearer in the mids.
The Seismic 10 is fantastic sub.
I just bought a pair of Studio-40 v.3, which will be the fronts in my home theatre, as well as used for music. Can anyone recommend a decent 7.1 receiver for under a thousand bucks. Would the Yamaha RX-V659 be too bright? I prefer warm over bright. Would Denon or Marantz be less bright sounding?
Thanks.
Hey guys!
I'm going tomorrow to listen to the Monitor 11v4s and am wondering if anyone has anymore comments on comparing them to the v5s than what is already said here.
The dealer said that he is moving strictly to the Reference line so he won't be getting the v5s but he said that he could definitely give me a great deal on the v4s if I like them since they will be his last.
Just wanted to see what you guys think. Thanks!

But since the v4 and the v5s are essentially the same price, I want to know if the newer v5s are an improvement over the v4s. If the difference isn't much, then I will stick with the v4 and I won't have to worry about sleeping and night and thinking, "Man, I wish I could have listened to those v5s since they are the newer model of the same speaker I just bought."

I'm not sure, but aren't the 11's close to the price of Studio 60's? Without knowing the deal you are getting that is... And if you are going to be using a sub, maybe you should throw the 60's into the mix. A friend of mine had 11's and switched to 60's and got better mids and highs and didn't give up too much in the bass dept. either. At least that is what he found in his set up.

I like how you placed all devices including studio 40s in the cabinet. But my question is, don't you think that studio 40s are placed too far away from each other? What is the distance between each speaker and how far do you sit back from the speakers?
Jack Caynon 01-05-07, 04:46 AM Okay, I'm looking for advice from Paradigm experts here.
I have a 16'W X 20' L HT room with an awesome Vutec Silverstar screen and the Mits HC3000u hooked up to a Lumagen HDP. I'm currently running 1996/97 vintage Paradigm speakers. I have the CC350, Mini-Monitor fronts, ADP350 dipole surrounds and the PS1000. I also have the Outlaw ICBM system to send anything lower than 120 hz to the sub. The Sub sounds fine in that room especially on the Apollo 13 IMAX version, so I'm satisfied with it. The center seems fine, too.
I have the Oppo 970hd which plays CDs divinely, especially when I use my Denon 4802 AVR's Pure Direct mode. It also awesome with DVD-Audio and DVD-Video using Dolby Digital or DTS.
I would like to start listening more to my music to relax after work at medium levels and late at night at low levels. I'm upgrading my power to the speakers with an Outlaw 7500 amp, which will have 200 watts per channel for 5 channels. I'll use the Denon as a pre-processor.
I would say that I would like to use the system 50/50 between Home theater and music. Long ago, that's why the salesman sold me the mini-monitors. He said for that application, they would be the best with the other speakers and the sub.
Any recommendations for Paradigms to replace the mini-monitors for my application? Thanks!
Jack

Good to hear, someday I may try bi-amping my 60v3s. Right now I vertically bi-amp my center 570 with a stereo amp.
Currently my L/C/R speaker amps drive long 45' of #12/4 cables to the 60s/570. This is due to the equipment being in a closet, wiring in walls. My 60's amp (Aragon 8008BB) has balanced inputs. If I were to pick up another identical Aragon, I would place each amp directly behind each 60, using balanced cables and very short speaker wire runs to vertically bi-amp.
Even though this would just be passive bi-amping, going from two such extremes should definitely show a performance difference. The big question would be if the "improvement" would be worth the cost of another amp (which sells used for $800-1000) . Probably won't happen this year, first I going to build a couple of Rythmik 12" sub kits, for a sub upgrade :)
tingtong5 01-05-07, 08:27 AM I build a hard-wired crossover using higher quality components for my studio 60's and also changed the internal cabling for Chord speakercables.
The result is a much more realistic sound! Also the metallic-ness of the tweeter is totally gone now.
A cost effective upgrade that I can recommend :-)
roland61970 01-05-07, 09:14 AM Hawk,
When I built the cabinet, I was somewhat limited with the distance apart. I had to choose between all the way on the outside where they are ( about 11 feet apart ), or right next to the TV (about 6 feet apart) so I went with the further out. I usually sit about 12 feet back from the front and have the 40s slightly toed in and the 470 angled down a bit. I get a wide soundstage, excellent separation. In 2 channel music mode vocals are dead centered. 5.1 SACDs are awesome, and movies DSPed to 7.1 DPLxII are great!. Havent watched LOTR yet but the beach scene in Private Ryan, wow!.
dobyblue 01-05-07, 09:17 AM That much I get.

I'll let you know what I think if you can wait 24 hours?

I really do not know what happened to my ears bu all of sudden I notice that my ears became real sensitive and can feel irritating numbness (aka listening fatigue) after listening to music with Studio 60s. I only listen to music at about 40-50db (not so loud believe me..)

I wasn't aware that the V4 was already there so they answer is no (have not been reading this thread for a long time), but I'll certainly consider it!
This is the schematic of the Studio 60 v3 crossover.
The coil with the question mark is 0,39 mH by the way.
I used MOX resistors, Audyncap plus capacitor for the tweeter, normal Audyncap's for the other caps.
I used a Tritec coil for the midrange, a HQ coil for the woofer and the original coil for the tweeter. Rdc of the tritec is exact the same as the original coil. Rdc of the HQ coil is much smaller then the original value, thus improving damping factor a lot. Tweeter coil is kept original because it was already an air core type and also because replacing it would change Rdc too much.
I used Chord Company Carnival silver for the internal wiring, everything hardwired and soldered.
This really improved this speaker a lot! Total costs were 130 euro per speaker.

Has anything changed in your set-up or room layout since this listening fatigue has set in?
You might be getting too much reflected treble energy and damping the room (redusing the number of hard surfaces) can really help with a bright sounding system.

WOW, thanks for sharing this info!
Well, got back from the dealer a couple of hours ago and just now have some free time.
The dealer had the Monitor 11v5s hooked up in a room and left me to my own free reign with every component he had.
The receiver was a Denon 2806 I believe (pretty sure that's what he said).
The speakers looke great, with the grills on. Without the grill, that white speaker is pretty much fugly. I see know why you guys are calling it a condom.
As for sound, the soundstage was great. All the performers from my demo disc sounded like they were standing in the middle of the room.
When my wife came in she thought just the center (a CC390 in all of it's huge glory  ) was the only speaker on.
All in all, I was pretty impressed. The only thing that lacked was the low range because they were just hooked up for the first time an hour before I came. I'm assuming they will liven up after a few more hours of break-in.
The dealer quoted me a pretty decent price on the whole 5 speaker setup but I don't know if I'm allowed to post that on here since it's not technically MSRP.
Just think of how many hours are in a day. ;)
wolfgaze 01-05-07, 08:35 PM You almost never want to use 5 channel stereo - parties might be the exception. Use DD PLII or DD PLIIx instead.

Ed, Can you go into more detail for me?
I'm not very advanced with receiver functionality...
If I'm listening to music, and I want to get sound from all 5 speakers, I should use Dolby Digital Prologic 2?
How is that going to differ from 5 channel stereo?
And if you do Paradigm Studios for the fronts, make sure you stick in the Studio line for the center channel and surrounds for the best experience. It's best not to mix and match brands or lines of speakers with others except for a sub, it can be whatever brand you want.

Bass,
I'm pretty happy with the JBL E35 center channel... That'll probably be the last speaker I upgrade... First I'll add surrounds and a little later down the road I'll replace my sub...
Kal Rubinson 01-05-07, 08:46 PM Ed, Can you go into more detail for me?5 channel stereo duplicates the stereo info in the other speakers without regard for imaging, phase or any sense of coherence.
If I'm listening to music, and I want to get sound from all 5 speakers, I should use Dolby Digital Prologic 2? How is that going to differ from 5 channel stereo? If differs in that it attempts to synthesize a true surround sound by using phase/timing information in the recording. Sometimes, it can do so fairly well.

Kal gave you some good info. Just to add to that - 5 channel stereo is very simplistic - it just repeats the L&R in the respective surrounds and reproduces the sum of L&R in the center channel. That concept will smear any imaging and produce just awful sound to a critical listener in the sweat spot. However it spreads the entire musical content roughly uniformly all over the place which is what you might want at a party where people are all over the place and not listening to the imaging.
DD PLII is very sophisticated and will do things like keep vocals up front and not smear the images. Every speaker plays different sounds. Sounds tend to be positioned in a logical fashion in the surround field.
Just give it a try. Note that for 2 channel sources, DD PLII and PL IIx *Music* mode gives you 3 parameters to play with to adjust the width and depth to your liking.

20% off the list price is fair to you and the dealer. I've noticed a trend that 15-20% is easy to get, and when they're clearing out speakers they give 30-35%, and demos are about 35% off. I would offer 75% of list, but would be willing to pay 80%, and 85% if the hassle factor of going elsewhere is big, but if you don't get 20% off, say that you're going elsewhere to listen to some other speakers and see if that works.

I really do not know what happened to my ears bu all of sudden I notice that my ears became real sensitive and can feel irritating numbness (aka listening fatigue) after listening to music with Studio 60s. I only listen to music at about 40-50db (not so loud believe me..)
I don't believe you have fatigue if you listen at 40-50 db, and I don't believe you listen at 40-50 db. Do you have a sound meter? A conversation will be over 60 db, so 40-50 db would be very quiet background music.
People have posted that they liked the sound with the new tweeter but I don't think it's a great idea. The crossover design depends on the impedance of each driver at the crossover frequency, and also often includes resistors to adjust the sensitivity (woofers are often the least sensitive so mids and tweeters are brought down to match). If the impedance is different at the crossover frequency or if the sensitivity is different, you may end up with a sound that is less accurate... less well balanced, and possibly with frequency peaks or dips in the lower treble. The new crossover would also not fix the problem because you would be matching it with the old mid-bass driver and would have the same issue.

10% is a decent deal. Getting 15-20% off is typically reserved for big package purchases (five or more speakers) or when you have a longstanding relationship with the dealer.
I would go with black speakers in your room. You already have a lot of redish wood tones in there (the floors, the couch, the wood fireplace, the trim). Going with black would provide a nice contrast to the existing wood tones while tying in with the coffee table, the TV and the top of the TV console.

You don't need to drop metal tweeters to get non-fatiguing sound, you just need a different metal tweeter, like the one in the Paradigm Signatures or the new Studios. For that mater, you are just as likely to find soft dome speakers that are bright and fatiguing as well. The material of the drivers has little to do with the tonal quality of the sound. For instance, I find Sonus Faber and Dynaudio speakers more forward and ultimately fatiguing (both soft dome speakers) than Paradigm Signatures.
rjsquirrel 01-06-07, 07:25 AM Hawk eye
I agree with you about brite speakers. I found that some degree of brightness (my words)will bring out detail I did not hear before. I am no music expert, just love to listen to all kinds of music.
When I additioned Sig S2, I had dealer set up Studio 100 V3 to A/B both speakers. More detail from the S2 but prefered 100 for Rock and roll. The S2 sound brighter(my word), more detailed with better sound stage than 100.

Have you done as much as you can with room treatments? (I say that knowing that not all of us can turn their living rooms into recording studios ;) )
If so, then it may be a "synergy" issue between your speakers, and the associated equipment, if you believe in that sort of thing (I do :D ).
I've gotten different results, with my Studio, driven by the same power amp, but with different preamps (or receiver preouts) upstream.
Bought a pair of these (monitor 11 v.5) along with a cc390 about a week ago. I only listened to the TV. through them. I found them just incredible for TV., so I decided to give them a serious kicking yesterday with some music. My previous system consisted of a limited edition Adcom and Vandersteen 2ci.
Results(driven by a Yamaha RXV 1700 using pure direct)
They play loud enough to part your hair
Highs are bang on but a little sharp right now(they should settle down a bit)
Imaging actually blows the Vandersteens away
Lows are strong, very tight and controlled(no distortion at even extreme levels)
Mids seem a little bit light(Might sound better through my high end Adcom)
Can't waight to get my Adcom amp fixed and take these for a spin.
I am really happy with this purchase.
Hawk_Eye 01-06-07, 09:28 AM I live in condo where it has large window throughout the walls. I have shutters put in each side. I would never thought that this would be the case but get this; when I open the shutters and I listened to high freq. oriented music such as Jazz and classical, I cannot even listen no more than like 5 min. I can actually feel the pain building in my ears right from the start.
When I close the shutter, the sound is MUCH sweeter and my pain tolerance goes up. I still feel the pain eventually but it is a lot better.
But I think the problem may be my receiver. Arcam AVR-350 is very revealing sounding device IMO. I think Studio speakers are very revealing system as well.
How do I know this? Before I got my AVR-350, I had really old Yamaha RX-V5XX receiver. My studio 60 sounded great but I can not even reach 50db with that receiver. It simply did not have the power. But I never experience listening fatigue with that setup.
Obviously, once I changed the receiver, it was a night and day difference in terms of sonic experience. However, since I am getting more revealing sound, highs are more ex exposed sounded and bad records sounded good in Yamaha receiver, but under the current setup, no. It will let you know right away.

Thanks Hifi for the reply... I felt kinda stupid asking about the color.. I was kinda torn between the two colors, but I think your right... Dark...
Anyways... Im just starting a relationship with this dealer, and he is a customer of mine, I was originaly going to get the Rotel new from him, but the used deal just fell in my lap, and I couldn't pass it up.. I am going for a full 5 speaker setup, so I was hoping for a good deal, but He deals with some serious heavy hitting buyers at his place, selling Classe amps, and 800 series B&W speaks... the whole line down to the 600's... So my purchase would be pretty menial compared to those higher end lines.

Yep, not even a 1/4". You're good to go as it comes with 4 of the little round rubber feet. I would also use a large thin rubber mat under the whole speaker so the shelf doesn't "color" the speaker sound as much.

Again, no way you couldn't reach 50 db with the Yamaha receiver. Your speakers will reach over 90 db with one Watt (at one metre), so with 2 speakers you should easily be able to reach peaks of over 100 db in a medium sized room. I wonder if you have some processing set because there should at most be a very small sound difference between 2 receivers if both are set flat. What did the Yamaha do to make bad recordings sound good? If the treble is hurting your ears, try turning the treble down a bit... in the short term it would be an easy remedy.

I think this one would be fine, depending on how loud you crank it up. The lowest priced Yamaha (the bottom one or two in the line) are not that good unless you have very efficient speakers. They are small and light and while rated for high power, can't dissipate heat well enough. A friend bought and returned two because the power supply would buzz audibly after playing it loud. He had the Monitor 7 at the time. The mid and upper level Yamaha are larger and don't heat up as much, and from the size of this one, I think you would be fine.

I mean really, what are these dealers doing to earn their $$, you walk in the door, they turn the thing on, and then when you buy it, they are just shuffling paperwork. And from what I understand the markup is pretty dam good on speakers.. so they get to make $1500. on a $4000. speaker set. Come ON @!@!

OK, I think the main problem is how untreated my living room is for HIFI listening. I placed some cushions on the walls beside speakers (1st reflection point?) Wow.. that isolated sound much better. My ear pain is almost gone now. I think if I place some kind of non reflective panels properly around walls, I can eliminate the problem that I am having.
I mean I did not know Arcam/Studio setup would require this kind of listening environment for a person to enjoy music. When I had Paradigm Monitor9/Yamaha RX-V569 setup in the same living room, I did not have ear pain so I did not need such room treatment.

I was reading db level on volume indicator in the receiver.
Went to a Paradigm dealer in Mississauga looking for a CC570 center channel for my Studio40 v.3's. They only had one. It was a demo that was the same color (cherry) as my speakers. They sold it to me for half the list price. I took it home, took it out of the box, and noticed a 1x2 inch area of the veneer was peeling in the bottom front left corner. Just cosmetic damage, no damage to the cabinet. The damage wasn't there when I looked at it in the store. Somehow, before the speaker made it to the box and into my hands someone dropped/bumped it. I took the speaker back and they offered to give my money back or an additional discount. So I bought it for 25 percent of the list price. The speaker is now clamped with a little carpenter's glue and will look as good as new when it's dry.
Now to find a Seismic 12 with a little veneer damage...lol.

macming 01-08-07, 09:45 PM I wasn't aware that the V4 was already there so they answer is no (have not been reading this thread for a long time), but I'll certainly consider it!
How much better did this mod result? How did it improve the sound? You mentioned it took away the metallicness of the tweeter before. How much of the improvement do you think is from upgrading the crossover, and how much do you think came from upgrading speaker wires?
Why did you swap the Tritec coil for the midrange if the Rdc is the same? What are the benefits of swapping the coils out? I can understand upgrading the capaciators to increase current storage. I have the Studio 20 myself, and do you think the crossover components are similar to the Studio 60 besides the mid bass driver? I have yet taken my speaker apart, but that should be fairly easy.
I was thinking while I'm performing this mod, I may try to swap in the new tweeter as well. Then I'd have almost a Signature S2 v1 for $200 :)
Contrary to every reply that I got here, Paradigm has confirmed that there now is a premium on certain finishes including Rosenut. I emailed back asking what the rational is since presumably the material cost of the vinyl and the labour is the same regardless of finish. I expected a reply today but have not yet received one.
Ed
Today I got another email from Paradigm that contradicts the above. They are now saying that there is no premium for Rosenut! Finally make sense to me.
But it's disturbing that a dealer would lie. After all, since Paradigm sales are so tightly controlled and prices are not published, we are largely dependent on their integrity.

Warpdrv 01-08-07, 11:22 PM Finally today, I got the chance to listen to the Studio 100's and the CC-690, as well as the Studio 60's. The place I went to, had every model of the studio line .v4. & the entire .v5 monitor line as well. I have never seen so many paradigm speakers together before, I felt like I was at a Paradigm Party !!! Didn't carry the sig. line though. :(
Speakers were very pretty.. in black ash - Looked great, and solidly built.
They Had the 60's in a room setup for 2 channel stereo, and I closed the door to the room, and he let me go to town... I put them through the paces, with Blues, Jazz, Rock, and the rest of the middle of the road instrumental/vocal bliss I brought with me.. They handled it all with integrity. I was impressed..
Dealer, had the Studio 100's in a theater setting with the CC-690(monster) in quite the funky arrangement. the seating was way higher then it should have been.. The first row of seats put my eyes 'n ears about 1ft. above the top of the speakers, and tweeters were pointing at my chest at best.. horrible arrangement, but they still seemed to project quite well, nice dispersal and sound stage even though I was above them. I gave hime my CD and asked to play in 2 channel mode, which was powered by his Anthem AVM-30 'n MCA 50 amp, and I realized he had a sub on, and asked to turn it off... The speakers were set at small, and projected no bass at all.. not good.. So obligingly he took them to the area by the 60's and set them up with a lesser powered aragon amp..
They sounded exceptional and performed very well.. broad sound stage as I moved around the room with my eyes closed, I could not tell easily where each speaker began or ended. High end was soft, not brittle and was quite pleasing to my ears. I would have liked to have heard them hooked up to a more powerful amp, but as I had little time left to stay, I asked him for a price quote, and he scurried off, and I again closed the door, and cranked the volume to the end of its limit. Aragon amp, smooth, warm sounding. He was quite proud of that line of amps and preamps.. steering me away from the "Brightness of the Anthem line of amps" hhmmmmm I didn't say anything, just let him talk..
At any rate... I got my price quote and was happily on my way...
Called him from my car thinking about my 7% discount, (dealer) "With new product releases we don't offer any better deals then that" and negotiated with the "after all, your seriously just pushing paperwork here, I even have to come pick them up and install them myself" Well I have to say my tactics worked, and I got a good price from him, so I will see what the competition will have to offer at this point..
Sorry about the drawn out lame a$$ noob review... :)
But I thought someone might find this useful.

Im diggin it except now that I got my new Pioneer Receiver it sticks out the back of where I would put on the back panel on... but doesn't look I will be puttin up too much of a stink... got my new setup up and running and fully adjusted, and OH MY FREAKIN LORD !! dobyblue 01-09-07, 08:45 AM Bought a pair of these (monitor 11 v.5) along with a cc390 about a week ago.
I completely agree with your assesment.
I bought a pair of Monitor 11v5 just before Boxing Day and a Servo 15v2.
I already had a CC370 and a pair of Monitor 11v4. I have moved the Monitor 11v4 to the rear speakers and installed the Monitor 11v5 as my main fronts.
I have done some extensive SACD and DVD-Audio listening as well as some of my favourite reference DTS and DD SD DVD tracks.
I am blown away - there is nothing more to say.
JoeFigueiredo 01-09-07, 04:52 PM I own:

CC370
ADP-370s
is there any benefit to biwiring these?
Any good articles about bi-wiring and how to do it and it's benefits?
Can these by bi-wired to a yamaha RXV540 receiver?

Can these by bi-wired to a yamaha RXV540 receiver? Most people on here will tell you not to do it. I'll tell you to give it a try and see if you like it. I personally bi-wire my speakers, and I am happy with the results.
Bottom line is that speaker wire is cheap, and experimentation with your equipment, in your room, with what you like in mind is the best way to find out. Just give it a try and see what you think.
-K
If you have reasonably short runs of reasonably thick wire, then no, you won't hear a difference if you bi-wire. If your receiver is 7.1 and can use the extra channels for bi-amping, then it is worthwile to try that.

Did you ever hear the Signatures? Upgrading the crossover is getting a sound closer to the signatures. How much closer? I would say somewhere between 25% and 50%.
Yes it did took away the metallicness of the tweeter, this was due to the crossover improvement not the wire.
The original coil for the midrange speaker is iron-core which means distortion! So one should replace it by an air-core equivalent. Tritec is a little more expensive coil then a normal air coil and sounds better. The Rdc is the same (if you pick the right wire thickness) thus preventing a change in frequency response.
Changing capacitors has nothing to do with increasing storage, in fact you should choose the exact same value. Changing the capacitor is done because you want a capacitor that is free of induction and/or resistance. The filter contains two elco's whixh is totally not-done when building a cross-over.
Just take out the crossover, you should be able to read the values of the resistors and the capacitors. The coils you will have to solder out and measure their value. (or go to a shop that can do this for you).
If you feel unsure about doing this, just change the tweeter capacitor as it will be the main improvement!
I also asked for v4 tweeters but my experience is that the paradigm dealer here is a bit reluctant to help out diy'ers :-(
Good luck.
Nice set up dobyblue! I envy the servo.

I emailed Paradigm tech service the other day about upgrading the tweeters in the v3 series, if there was any "technical" reason why it could not be done, and how the change would effect the warranty. I have yet to get a reply, but will post the response if and when I get one.

Thank you. Maybe if I turn it up enough you'll hear it (I'm in downtown St. Catharines, Patrick Sheehans is my local watering hole)
Where did you get yours from?
I knew that there was one pair of 11v4 blacks left at Paradigm and asked my local dealer here if they could get them for me for $899 as I had already purchased a pair of 11v4s the previous year from them for $1225.
They wouldn't go below $999 and wouldn't waive the admin fee on the financing, so I got a pair of new black 11v5s instead from Mississauga for only CDN$835.

redline65 01-10-07, 04:37 PM Hi all, I'm considering an amp for my Paradigms but I'm concerned that 200WPC might be too much for the SA-15R in-walls. Paradigm's site says the suitable amplifier power range for these speakers is 15-160 watts, with the maximum input power at 100 watts. So can they handle being driven by an Emotiva MPS-1 or should I just keep driving them with my Denon 100WPC AVR?
Brian P. Hearon 01-10-07, 04:54 PM Any new news from Paradigm at CES? I heard that there is revision to the Signature tweeter and need to confirm.
mystikjoe 01-10-07, 05:13 PM i've upgraded as stated in previous post. to clear up some confusion my dealer got me just the domes of the tweeters. the mount and the magnets were used from the originals. thats why the swap only cost about 70 dollars to do the pair. if tackling the project i'd suggest purchasing some ferrofluid to put around the coil because alot is lost when you pull the old tweeter out. the sound to me is much better than the v3 tweeter. i'm really interested in upgrading the crossovers like stated by the other poster that has done it. anyone know where to buy all the caps and wire to do the upgrade? thanks alot!
i'd suggest purchasing some ferrofluid to put around the coil because alot is lost when you pull the old tweeter out.Where do you buy that? I heard that it's incredibly expensive - is that true?
Ed
I live in condo where it has large window throughout the walls.
Windows and glass in general are extremely reflective and will make any speaker's high frequency unbearable. If you also have a TV in the middle between the speakers, you can cover it with a flannel and it helps tremendously too.
I have a pair of 60v2 in a dedicated treated HT room. The highs are well behaved 95% of the time. The other 5% is more to do with bad recording than the speaker itself. They lack the bottom octave and not very transparent (keep in mind its v2 not v3 or the current one) I am going to sell it so anyone interested can pm me. Keep in mind I am in Canada so shipping to US will be expensive.

One place for parts I have dealt with is the PartsConnexion, although I imagine there is many more.

How do you separate the dome from the motor structure? I'm interested in doing this mod, but I'd hate to damage a pair of perfectly good tweeters.
I figured I'd do this upgrade the same time I upgrade the crossover components too. This is getting interesting :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have an Engineering background, and I've done some soldering back in high school. So I should be OK with this upgrade. Depending on how difficult it is to get the parts around here, I may just do the tweeter capacitor like you suggested.
When you pulled your speaker apart, was there an acoustic foam inside? If not, I guess Paradigm didn't put any in there by design.
How do you separate the dome from the motor structure? I'm interested in doing this mod, but I'd hate to damage a pair of perfectly good tweeters.
They're physically not connected. The dome simply pulls out. But you do have a loss of the fero fluid. The fluid is there for heat transfer. It's too easy to fry the tweeters with the fluid and so the chances of frying them with a loss of fluid is even higher. That's why I asked about buying more fero fluid.

Anyone agree that for pure enjoyment of 2ch music listening Studio 20s are better than any other sutdio speakers?
The 20s will probably give you the best image (and they should given they are monitors). But I wont say it is better for the simple reason it lacks the bottom octave when the music goes low (like organ, cello, etc)
I find a pair of 60s most enjoyable even for smaller room. The 100s have more bass but you need room for them to "breathe". The 20s is the best when the room is small and you just cant fit floorstanders in. The 40s always kind of scratch my head in terms of targeted audience (adding the price of stand makes it almost same price as 60s)
Lets just agree the studio line is extremely good value and approach audiophile quality. :)
dobyblue 01-12-07, 08:40 AM The Monitor 11v5s actually have two rear ports, one at the bottom and one at the top.

dobyblue 01-12-07, 03:09 PM I have mine about 1 foot away from my rear walls and don't find anything taking away from the sound. If anything the two ports probably allow for closer placement? They are not small ports either.

I`m glad its not just me that feels the older 7semk3`s deserve some props. They really are a diamond and can be had used for 400 and under. Definately cant find much fault in them and makes it more intrigueing to do a comparison vs. my studio 40`s. My friend and I are gonna do a shootout between some various speakers (Klipsch klf 20`s, studio 40`s and his Ascend 340se`s) and I guess I might as well through the 7 se`s in the mix.

Now I can move my Focus's to the back. Just saving for a new center now, to replace my cc-270. Later.

I used to have ear fatiguing problem with 60s, but after I properly place the speakers, man I can listen to music ALL DAY!. I mean the sound stage and imaging from this speakers are simply stunning IMHO.

If properly placed in an acoustically treated room, the speakers simply disappeared. The sound stage is so 3D it needs to be heard to be believed a $2k speaker can do it (actually my v2 is prob worth $700-800 market price and that makes it even more stunning.)
Even though the Paradigm are relatively high sensitivity, a good power amp will make them sing even more.
antman27 01-13-07, 07:28 PM I am torn on trying new a new pair of speakers
My room is NOT acoustically treated and is kind of a nightmare .
I know Placement is WRONG but its kind of a compromise
Will better power amp help amp in my room (now using a denon 3805) or will $$$ be better spent elseware ?
Also as you see space is limited so an amp like a nufoce (something slim or that can be hidden behind the TV would be great)
A new amp isn't going to help as much as pulling your L/Rs away, and foward from that screen, they need more room to breath. Either get some stands or upgrade to a tower.
Also, if your center is going to be that high, make sure it is tilted down towards the listening area (I can't tell if it is already).

Assuming you have no way of putting the speakers on proper stand, you should at least pull them out so that they are at least flush with the tv screen (as oppose to recessed as seen in the pic). Ideally the further they are out the better (less reflection off the side and fron of tv) Also I would screw the spike to the bottom of the speakers and rest them on pennies (so that they dont mark the tv stand/furniture.
I also notice you have no isolation on the equipment (meaning the speaker's bass is vibrating the tv stand where the equipments are. One relatively cheap tweak that works like wonder is a product call "Vibrapod" and "vibracone" They are cheap about $6-$8 each and u need about 3-4 per equipment but they definitely will improve the sound quality tremendously. Just get it for the receiver and source (cdp, dvp, etc)
Try the speaker placement first as its free. Report back how it sounds. :)

IF I ran 2 subs and put one on each side of the stand could I place my 40's on top of the subs or is that a BAD Idea ?
antman27 01-13-07, 07:56 PM Thanks wongmb
I do have 3 audiopoints under each speaker
I may try the Vibrapods under the DVD and AVR
The speakers are just a tad in front of the TV and slighty toed in
