View Full Version : Paradigm Owners Thread?
canman1976 01-02-09, 05:35 PM Hey guys,im way back on pg 27 of this great thread and my question may be answered somewhere between here and there but Ill ask anyhow. Is the only difference between the studio 60's and studio 100's simply a extra woofer and build materials wood etc..cause I am considering the 100's but don't want a extra amp.I am getting a very good svs sub so are the 60's that are subbed well similar to the 100's? Basically what im wondering is if a great sub and the studio 60's will lack something the 100's would offer(sound wise). I was planning on a good denon avr (120wpc) and the 60's.Im using this 90% home theater and 10% music.
thanks.
Warpdrv 01-02-09, 05:40 PM NO..... the 60's are a 2 1/2 way speaker and the 100's are a 3 way speaker with a dedicated midrange driver.
You should critical listen to them if you can to see if the difference is worth the extra money for you...
I did and felt the 100's had that better mid range presence.... but thats me....

it looks like the new studio 60 will be getting an extra driver. so will it be a 3 way?
Warpdrv 01-02-09, 05:44 PM Shouldn't be a problem. I know Warp and others have done this, and I currently have a Mitsubishi 65734 DLP sitting on top of mine.
My Panasonic 50" 9UK sits on top of mine with no troubles.... well over a year....

I have the 100's and 690 and 20's and run a Rotel RMB-1095, but I'll be looking to upgrade that amp to a new IcePower with some real power. I'm gunna need it to keep up with the 3 - 18" subs I'll have in there, hope to finish the build next week..... :D

bigsac65 01-02-09, 06:03 PM Warp; Can I ask what tv cabinet you are using I am looking for a new unit and that would fit in rather nice with the rest of the room.
Thanks.
Warpdrv 01-02-09, 06:10 PM http://www.standoutdesigns.com/entertainment-centers.asp
They offered a 2 tone design back then, not sure if they still do, you could ask, they are a pretty nice company to deal with....

they will also need a matching center and surround(driver size). cant wait:)
bigsac65 01-02-09, 06:31 PM Thank you; that would look nice with my PDP5010 sitting on top of a CC690 :D. Did you get the fan kit for it?
Warpdrv 01-02-09, 06:43 PM Naaaaa I made my own with some quiet 120mm computer fans, plexi, and a wall wart I had layin around.... Another reason I can't wait to get an IcePower amp, cool runnin...
Fargus777 01-02-09, 06:52 PM Thanks Nelson and Warp for the replies.
That Radius Looks pretty nice. I was originally thinking about the Bell'o PR-10. Now I have something else to consider!

Warpdrv 01-02-09, 07:37 PM I like the console, I wish it was a touch deeper, It comes with back panels, but with my pioneer and the rotel, and cables on the back of them, I just can't keep the back panels on it, much less trap all that heat in there.... otherwise its a great looking console.... :) And the prices have come down to where they were when i bought it..

No problem. Post some pics after you get all together.
Hey all, I just got back form the home theater store and was going to pick up a CC-690 that I called about and they said they had one in...Well long story short when I got there someone sold it. I wanted the black ash one but all they had was the other colours. So needless to say I was a little choked. They offered me the 690 for $1040, but with none that I wanted there they offered me the Siggy C3 v2 in piano black for $1300. What would you do???
cinemafreak 01-02-09, 09:21 PM Should I go for the cc190 or the cc290?
Budget for speakers is 800-1000, including the Mini Monitors I have chosen.
My room is a dedicated 12x16 media room.
I am still deciding on a receiver, Onkyo 606 or 706 or Marantz 5003.
canman1976 01-03-09, 12:58 AM Ok please forgive me if this is a stupid question or doesn't make any sense but would it be a good idea to run a set of studio 100's using a denon 3808 as a pre pro and have a external amp to drive the studios and have the denon power the center and surrounds only? Can the denon be used in this way? I believe the reciever has to have pre- outs for this to work am I correct? Finally is it a waste to spend big bucks on a denon avr if I am using it a pre/pro are there better options?
thank-you.

I would definitely recommend the cc 290. it has the same size drivers as the mini monitors. I am using the cc 290 with my v5 Titans and it sounds great. DON'T cheap out on the center, it's the most important speaker in your surround system.

I auditioned a set yesterday which included Monitor 7's for fronts and the Mini's for rears. I could really tell the difference when salesguy switched back and forth betweeh the 190 & 290. Go with the 290.
cinemafreak 01-04-09, 04:23 PM Ok, just called a dealer and they offered the Mini Monitor v.5 and the cc290 v.5 for $715.00 since the v.6 is coming soon....should I jump on this deal?
the v6's have been out for quite a while already. I paid $399 cdn for my Titan v5's and $299 cdn for my cc 290 v5 back in September. they were clearing them out then as they already had v6's in stock. Hope this helps you out.
p.s. this is my 200th post..........yay!

I am using the denon as a pre-pro using it to power the rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup. I have an external amp driving the fronts and side surrounds. You can't go wrong with the 3808ci for its street price (not the retail price).

Not a stupid question. Yes it is a good idea budget permitting. Not 100% sure about the 3808 but u should be able to do it.
Denon makes a good product, I'm very happy with my 4806 even though it is getting to be a little out dated

That will work just fine. You can get a dedicated pre/pro but it won't cost less.
You can always start with the receiver, and add the amps later.

You could spend 1000's more and not get the bang for the buck you will get with the Mini Monitors, Atoms, Titans and a CC290 in a room 12 x16 (1536 cu ft)
I personally prefer the Onkyo products over Marantz. Be informed that Marantz and Denon are part of the same corporation. IMHO Denon MOTR products outperform comparably priced Marantz products. I have personally listened to the Onkyo 606, 706 and & 806. The 606 is great but cannot upscale to 1080P. The other units have slightly more power and a Faroudja scaler. You can't go wrong. I would go with the 706, because it scales to 1080P.
I would add the AV123 MFW-15 subwoofer and you would have a 1st rate system for a room that size. Be sure to use good speaker wire like "Anti-wire" or Kimber 8TC /4TC.;)
cinemafreak 01-05-09, 10:56 PM I found a deal I could not pass up, I bought the Denon AVR-2309ci, 561 shipped. Yes, it does not have an easy setup, but I think its worth the extra coin over the 606 and 706. If I do not like it I can always switch it out. I think its a good start to a system that will include the Mini Monitors and the cc290. Next up Subs.

Or you can save $500-1000 and buy a 100' roll of 12/14awg from Monoprice for $20 and use the money where it would actually do some good.
Like room treatment.
Hey guys, Im looking for some advice. I have one room in our house that is our "tv room". Its really an office that I converted to our tv room. Its fairly small. I would guess around 12x12 maybe. The seating is about 6'-8' from the television (46" Sony LCD).
I have all the equipment hidden away nicely in the closet. So the only thing you see is the flat tv. No wires, satellite boxes, ps3, etc..
Watching movies in 1080p is great, but its really lacking the sound. I have wanted to add surround sound for a long time and I think I am finally ready to make the plunge. I have a friend who does HT installations. He is a Paradigm dealer. He said he could hook me up with a pretty good price.
So heres my question:
1. I want something that will look nice and clean. So I was thinking tower style speakers up front. Im debating between Monitor Titan vs. Monitor 7s along with cc290 in center. My buddy recommends the 7s, but Iv read quite a few good things about the Titans here and thinking with my small size, will the 7s be overkill?
2. Receiver.... anyone see anything wrong with getting Onkyo 706?
3. Sub.... like to get Paradigm also so I can save a few bucks. Haven't read much on these yet... thinking something like DSP or Ultracube. What do you suggest?
4. Rears... The way my rooms is setup, our seating area is litterally against the back wall basically. So these speakers will be really close to our ears. I dont want something too over bearing.... ADP190 be okay?
This room is basically a TV room. We watch Blu-Ray movies, play PS3 (rockband and other games). Really do not listen to much radio in here. BUT... if we had nice speakers, might do that a little. But overall, I would say movies far exceeds music.
thanks for any advice/help/suggestions...
Warpdrv 01-06-09, 11:45 AM 00bolt, #3, I would suggest you look at SVS or HSU or Rythmik (http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/subs/subintro.html) for a much better bang for your buck in subwoofers, I'm not saying the Paradigm subs are bad, but a much better sub can be had for the money. That is a pretty small room, and a Rythmik would be spectacular in there, you wouldn't be wanting for a replacement IMO.
yngdiego 01-06-09, 12:26 PM 2. Receiver.... anyone see anything wrong with getting Onkyo 706?
Yes, it's made by Onkyo. I had a 905 and it was terrible so Onkyo bought it back due to major bugs. Look at the Denon series. Much better firmware support and customer service. Onkyo couldn't give a flying rat's butt about supporting or fixing their products. The Denon 28xx or 38xx are good. But make sure you CALL an authorized dealer, as web prices are almost list.
And +1 on HSU or SVS subwoofer. They mop the floor for the $$ over the Paradigm.

Or you could be one of the vast majority of happy Onkyo/Integra owners who have had no problems what-so-ever with their AVR.
Let me see what your saying here. Onkyo has such bad CS and doesn't care about their customers so much that they bought back a unit that you probably bricked?
I agree w/ the sub recomendations though.
Sorry guys....no intention of thread-jacking. :o

It was not bricked, thank you, and I only learned of their horrid firmware and CS support after I bought it. Any company that doesn't allow end-user firmware upgrades and forces an underground movement and passing around of 'jigs' to update firmware will never get my business again.
My Denon 3808 sounds beautiful with my Paradigm Sigs and I'm vastly more happy than with my 905.
okay, well Im not so concerned about the receiver part of my question. Iv pretty much made up my mind on the 706, heard some good things about it from friends who have the exact model...
my question is more about #1. With such a small room, do you think I should lean towards the Titan or the 7s? What about the center? Is the cc290 an obvious choice over the cc190? Or would the cc190 be good also?
Since I need to buy everything here, Im a little concerned about money, But if something is twice as good and only barley more expensive, I can stretch a little.
Right now without actually hearing any personal opinions on my exacty scenario nor listening to any of this stuff in person, Im thinking of something like this
Onkyo 706
Paradigm Titans or 7s - front
Paradigm cc190 or cc290 - center
Paradigm ADP190 - rear
undecided on sub

Hi guys ,
Paradigm 5se MKll used pair approx. 15yrs old , $160 canadian dollars
Would this be a good deal for these speakers or do you think I should buy something that is more up to date in technology ? I would be using them for main fronts .
I was also thinking about buying a brand new pair of paradigm mini monitors instead of the 5se . Any advice as to which would sound better ?
Thanks
headshrinker2 01-06-09, 05:02 PM John,
The Paradigm 5se MKII were released in 1991 and were sold new for $500.00. Avg used price is $230.00.
Hope this helps.

Hi headshrinker ,
I guess even that the 5se is older , would I get a better sound through them when comparing them to the new mini monitors ?
So I guess the seller of the 5se is selling them at a reasonable price then .I am surprised they hold there value pretty good for how old those speakers are .

It truly will be if your ears can pick a sonic signature of one over the other as for overkill well does that even exist in this hobby.
tyorder1 01-06-09, 11:23 PM Where can I find a current price list for paradigm online? I've seen a few lists but they are outdated and missing newer speakers.

This is probably the best one anyone can find since Paradigm does not allow selling online.

If it was my $$$ and with that small of a room, I might consider the following.....
Atoms x 4 (since your seating arrangement doesnt look like it can accomodate dipoles)
CC290 (CC most important in a HT environment IMO)
Subwoofer (the money you saved can be put towards a really good one)

May I ask what you mean about dry rotting ?
Thanks for your input .
tyorder1 01-07-09, 08:48 AM I'm trying to find the current retail price for the SA-ADP speakers and all I found was an article stating they would be 899.00 that was written in September last year. Can anyone confirm the price?

Since I am a noob at this . What should I be looking for when I go and listen to those used paradigm 5se mkll ? Is there any advice as to what people should look for and do when looking to buy old used speakers ? .
CUclimber 01-07-09, 01:47 PM I'll make a long story short here:
I have a Paradigm CC-350 with a busted crossover. I bought the speaker used, and I'm virtually certain that the damage occurred during shipping.
Pictures of the broken crossover are here. (http://www.franzen-online.com/lightroom/photos/crossover/)
My local speaker repair and Paradigm dealer quoted me at $90-$150 to fix/replace this. I have emailed Paradigm to see if they can help me out directly.
I know a little bit about circuits and I'd be willing to try to re-build this on my own (or pay someone a small fee to do it for me); I really don't want to shell out $150 for what looks like $10 worth of parts on a tiny board. Has anybody else had to have this kind of work done on a Paradigm, and if so how much did it cost and how did you do it?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

jwc13ac 01-07-09, 02:37 PM I'm not sure about you guys, but I feel the Studio line needs a certain level electronics to sound up to the fullest potential. I was using a Onkyo 705 to power my Studio 20s, + CC-590s all v4. I thought sound was great, but lacking a little something compared to when I demoed them. (the dealer was using Anthem gear)
I recently bought a Marantz SR6003, and man, did they open up. The best way i can put it, the speakers went from 3 front channel to a soundstage. Musically, opened way up.
I used to not believe in the "AMP's sound different" junk, but I recently crossed over.
I recommend that all who are using a receiver similar to this, try upgrading to a Marantz or another brand known for sound quality over features. ESPECIALLY if you listen to stereo music.
Note: If you can't tell, I've become somewhat of a Marantz fanboy, but my experience I felt needed to be shared the Paradigm community.

Hey jwc13ac, I agree with you. I use an older Marantz SR5300 AVR with my Paradigm Titan v3 speakers and the combination is great with music.

Just be aware that at least some models had under-powered DSPs and thus with high-def audio Audyssey was disengaged. I'm a strong believer in Audyssey so this would be a show stopper for me. I would imagine this will be corrected, if it hasn't already, but make sure you verify before buying if this feature is important.

question? my paradigm sub-ps1200, does it have a internal fuse? won't work at all. regards....
I have a PDR 10 and everytime it stops working the cause was a blown fuse. No harm in opening it up and checking for a blown fuse. Or take it in to your local paradigm dealer and let their tech support fix it (costs more wait time and money).

Also the drivers look like the V4 drivers on the 100's. Looks like the cabinet is only the upgrade. And the drivers look very cheap on the 60's, guess have to see these in person and give them a listen before i come to any conclusion...
Warpdrv 01-08-09, 06:28 PM The Mid and Bass drivers on the Center Channels are different then the Studio 100's. New drivers on the Studio 20's as well...
Look at the surround material.... You would have thought they would have gone with magnetic grills on this version at this point by now... whats up with that...?
I just had to replace one of the woofers on one of my Studio 100's, my dealer got it covered under warranty....

welcome for the picsTechnology Advances
Paradigm has long been known for outfitting its speakers with midrange and bass drive units that are virtually free of unwanted vibrational resonances, cone standing waves and micro distortions. The new Studio v.5 line is no exception. On bass/midrange and bass drivers, Paradigm engages advanced Santoprene® rubber suspensions with a new elliptical shape, allowing the speakers to achieve even lower levels of distortion, with deeper and louder overall bass performance. High-hysteresis and progressive damping isolate and eliminate “edge-hole” distortion, while linearity is the finest Paradigm has ever achieved in this series.
Design Advances
The curved, modern look of the cabinetry in the Studio v.5 line doesn’t just add a refined elegance to the next generation of Paradigm’s award-winning speaker line. The curved enclosures also help solve the problems of unwanted internal sound reflections and edge diffraction that have long been associated with rectangular cabinets. Studio v.5 speakers are also treated to seven coats of the highest-quality lacquer, which is hand-sanded in between coats. The rich, deep wood grains are evident across models.
The cabinet tops, bottoms and baffles are MDF (medium density fiberboard) construction with critically placed internal bracing. The high-tech Permacote Linacoustic damping material helps to subdue any stray internal cabinet resonances and vibrations.

Any chance it was the midrange driver?
It has happened to me twice on my Studio 60's v3. The glue that attaches the edges to the speaker lost its stickyness and the speaker starts buzzing as a result. I replaced one within 1 weeks of owning the speakers and am just now replacing the other. They are 5 years old now.
I want to be clear. Paradigm has fixed both quickly and without any hard work from me. I love my Studio 60's and im staying with Paradigm because the speakers just rock.

No offense, but the 100s will kick the ever loving you know what out of those Infinitys. Those speakers aren't even close to the same league as the Paradigms.

Nope.... just a woofer, when I was running test tones, you could clearly tell that there was something wrong with one of the speakers from the sound that was coming out of it. Upon closer inspection with my ear to the speaker it was easy for me to find the faulty driver. Gently pushing in on the driver with power to it, you could feel the VC scratching.

dogbox46 01-11-09, 12:12 PM Folks,
I'm considering adding a couple of Paradigm in-ceiling speakers to move from my current 5.2 system to a 7.2 set-up. I could really use your perspective on the recommended model, keeping in mind these will be presence speakers only.
I have Studio 100 v.3 main, cc 590 centre, adp 470 surrounds and dual mfw-15's for the lfe. The theatre runs on an Emotiva XPA-5 amp and soon the UMC-1 pre/pro. I'll probably add the UPA-2 to power the new in-ceilings.
Your thoughts would be most helpful.

gssmith32 01-11-09, 05:48 PM I'm going to be looking into the studio 20 v4 and studio 10/20 v5. Does anyone know if these would pair well with a cambridge integrated amp, specifically the 540a or 640a? These two amps are available right now for $300 and $400 and seem like a great deal. Or is there another brand that suits the paradigms better for $500 or less? I'm going to be using these speakers as part of a 2.0ch setup used primary for music(mainly jazz/big band/classical) in a 11' x 13' room and I don't listen at extremely loud volumes. Many thanks in advanced :)

dogbox, I am in Winnipeg too. According to the Paradigm brochure in front of me, the AMS series of in ceilings would be the perfect match to your studios. Where are you getting them from, Advance or Creative? Advance is where I got the brochure from when I bought my monitor series speakers there.
headshrinker2 01-11-09, 07:00 PM There is lots and lots of talk and opinion around the forums regarding the differences between different brands of receivers. As you probably know from reading, Marantz and Integra are often cited as having better audio quality than Onkyo. Two local AV dealers suggested that Denon is an improvement over Onkyo, and that Marantz is an improvement over Denon. The Marantz 503 has been recommended to me several times.
Having said that, I recently picked up an Onkyo 706 on a fantastic deal. I couldn't pass it up. It simply rocks for movies. Easy to use and set-up. No, it is not the end-all-be all for music. But no receiver is going to be. I choose the 706 because it has pre-amp outs and I have a Rotel multi-channel amp that I plan to mate with it. But even here, while a separate amp is likely to be an improvement, the quality of the pre-amp in the reciever is also going to be a limiting factor.
I have come to the conclusion that the current crop of receivers in the $500-$1000 range all generally perform reasonably well, but don't expect sonic miracles.
Good luck with your decisions. For mostly movies, you can't really go wrong here.
BTW, you have probably read stuff about the Onkyo receivers running "hot". With adequate ventilation (and not putting stuff on top), everything is just fine.

drisker 01-12-09, 05:29 AM Hey guys
I have a pair of paradigm titans. I'm just wondering what sub i should get to go with it. I listen to about 70% Music/30% movies, so it'll have to be a musical sub. Room is fairly small.
So I was thinking the HSU-STF 2 or the SVS PB10-NSD? What do you guys think? and should i be shortlisting anything else?
osofast240sx 01-12-09, 10:18 AM I've been looking around at a few speaker set-ups and I'm down to the Energy FPS and the Paradigm Millenia 20's for my front 3, I know the on-wall setup is not the preferred way to go but in my new place that’s really the only option I have.. I was able to listen to the Energy's at a local place but as for the Paradigm's all they had set up were the Millenia 200 towers. I can get a pretty good deal on the 20's and was wondering if anyone here has that setup or has heard these speakers in comparison to the energy's. Any advice would be appreciated.almost a tie IMO. Ill give the edge to the paradigm 20's must use a sub

Viper359 01-12-09, 11:14 PM Hello Everyone;
I am in the process of researching a new speaker set-up for my home theatre. I figure, I should give as much info as possible, and let you wonderful folk give me the best advice. Some of my questions could be somewhat simple, but, without asking, one never learns the answer.
My goal is to have a speaker system I can enjoy for 10 years or so. Right now, I live in a condo, but might move to a house in the next few years, and wish to avoid the upgrading of speakers again. However, as my wallet has learned the hard way, once you dive into the realm of upgrading a computer or home theatre set-up, it never stops, you always want more and better!!!
So before I get into my questions, and current room size etc, I should mention, I am leaning towards the Paradigm Monitor Series. This set consists of 02 Monitor 11's for the fronts, the centre being a CC-390, ADP-390 for the surrounds, the sub a DSP-3400. (Budget might force me to wait on the sub) My current TV is a 55" Sony rear projection LCD, I have the sony (el cheapo) STR-DG500 receiver. My current speakers are 4ohm cube speakers from my first sony HTIB. The receiver I am using, is meant for 8 ohms. I have a Samsuck Blu Ray player attached to this system, with my Rogers HD PVR Box. The receiver is only handling the audio, none of the video. Direct feed to the tele for that. All the audio is given to the receiver via optical cable.
Now, my viewing room is at least 15 feet long, 11 feet wide, and my viewing distance from the screen to my couch is 07 feet, 5 inches. I know, its a little close, but nothing I can do about that.
Going back to what I said about future moving, I want to have my own basement home theatre one day, hence why I am picking these nice speakers now. So, based on that comment, is it actually possible for tower speakers to overburden my soundstage or ruin movie surround effects? In other words, are these tower speakers to big and powerful for my current viewing room and limited distance from the speaker to the couch?
The surround speakers would not be able to be placed behind me, even my current cube speaker set-up has them off directly to each side of my couch.
the centre speaker, based of the website, shows it will fit below my tv, on a glass shelf, however, I have read that this centre speaker comes with a mounting shelf bracket for people like me, who have LCD rear projection TV's, allowing one to point it down, directly at the viewing audience. Also, the same question applies, is this too much speaker for such a short viewing distance?
I know I am using 4ohm speakers on a 8ohm receiver, and right now, I have to crank the volume to level 40 to feel the effects of a proper movie. I can only imagine, (I dream nightly) how much improvement I will get in a real home theatre once I have speakers able to actually do the job!!
I have given lots of info, I hope it is the info you smarties need to really help me here. I understand that a receiver is the first thing that should be upgraded, but my current amp I hope can do the job with a speaker upgrade, so that should be first. Right now, my AMP is better than my speakers. (That speaks volumes about cheap stuff!!) Hence why my speakers are my first priority. Lets also mention, the most costly of the upgrade!!
A last minute question I also have is, can speakers be upgraded in sets, IE, front 2 towers and centre, then the surrounds, using the old cubes until I get more money, or should I just do it all in one shot.
thanks for any help!!
i currently have a paradigm speaker setup consisting of
Monitor 9 v5 as fronts
adp-190 v5 as surrounds
cc-190 v5 as center.
and i'm using a rxv-1800 yamaha reciever - the impedance config for the amplifier is "8ΩMIN, 6ΩMIN"

I have a RX-V2700, the older brother of your unit. The link below is the review of this unit and the author strongly recommends keeping the speaker impedance switch in the 8 ohm mode for the most power to be delivered before thermal shutdown.
Good reading for Yammie owners:

I'm surprised that one of the mag's have not got their hands on the new studios to do
a review but that doesn't surprise me to much most of the articles were not catering
toward higher end gear so I dropped most of my subscriptions.
Logic_BomB 01-13-09, 10:21 AM Viper359 - when I lived in an apartment I bought 2 floorstanding Paradigm Studio 60's. Big suckers. We sat... oh, 6-7 feet from the front of the speakers, maybe. They sounded *amazing*. I had no surrounds, center, or sub and these speakers just blew my mind. Nice bass (for lack of a sub, that is), able to crank loud and clear, and I was hearing things I'd never heard of before. Best of all I could listen at lower volumes without trouble.
I've now moved into a house and these speakers sit in the basement with a projector and still do the heavy lifting effortlessly.
Floorstanding speakers will not sound overbearing or too large. They WILL have nicer bass than smaller speakers, have better clarity all-round, and generally impress the socks off you.
Hope that helps.

Thank you, to be honest, that was the answer I wanted to hear. It can be somewhat difficult to find out information that a newb like me can actually understand. There is lots of reference material online about setting up great home theatre and music listening systems, but if you don't understand half of what is being spoke about, you find yourself in big trouble.
Now, silly question for everyone, if I upgraded in sections, IE: Fronts and Centre, then surrounds, I could still use my crappy sony cubes for the surrounds while waiting for more cash correct? Would the smaller sony cubes just be too little speaker for the system? i think i am trying to say, the fronts would be such an improvement, could the surrounds even keep up, or would the sound of a movie just be bad due to the extreme limitation from them?

As long as you dont overdrive the Sony's they should work fine till you get something more beefy. I used some Denon cheapos that came with an old HTIB package and they did fine, I think they were only like 30 watts also.
Viper359 01-13-09, 01:11 PM Awsome, So the speakers would overpower the surrounds I have. Mind you, it would not be the end of the world if they did. Now, someone told me I should try to keep the same model revisions, IE, if I got the monitor 11 v6 series for the front and the applicable centre, I would want to keep the same for the surrounds. Is this correct?
If so, when do they usually stop producing a revision? Is it like a car, you have about a year and half, then they are all gone.

Surrounds are less important to be matched when it comes to movies. Listening to multi channel music is another story. Timber matching is more important if you do alot of that. I personally stick with 2 channel for music. I also run Energy RVSS surrounds that are completely different from my Paradigms and have zero issues for movies. If you wanna stick to the same revision then you can always try buying on the used market.
Logic_BomB 01-13-09, 04:52 PM Viper359 - Due to my budget I'm piecing my system together slowly, similar to how you plan to upgrade in sections. It's an excellent plan since you can appreciate how your system grows with each step.
I wouldn't pair cube speakers with floorstanders though. Just my opinion but the cubes will sound like a tin can while your floorstanders will sound full and powerful. By all means feel free to try it out, you have nothing to lose, but I personally wouldn't go that route. Don't think of it as under or overpowering each other, think of it as mixing two very different sounding speakers - do you want the 747 in front of you to fly over and become a Cessna behind you?
As far as timber matching, as long as you stay with Paradigm's Monitor line you'll be fine. If they upgrade the version before you can buy more speakers the worst case scenereo would be a bit better sound coming from your surround channels which I would bet is a very, very hard task to notice without really trying. My Sutio 60's are V.3 and my Studio 20's will be V.4 and I'm not loosing even a wink of sleep over it. Hell, I would get the V.4's even if I *could* get my hands on some V.3's.
Does anyone know of an online store for Paradigm speakers? I know the Paradigm web site says they do not sell online. There are no local dealers in my area.

6ave but I'm confused as to how or why they are allowed to sell them
It seems really "off".....they dont seem to carry the whole line, prices are pretty much retail but if you want to add to cart, no stock and they
take anywhere from 1 -10 days to ship....now the models they do have in stock are not priced and where the price usually is there is an icon
that says "authorized dealer, call for info 1-877....."
And their description of these speakers just sound silly, I like this one in particular..."It matches timber with your front, rear and surround-sound speakers, coordinating well with your other components to deliver sweet-sounding harmonic structures that emanate throughout the room."
Matches timber? And the beauty of this line is that it is used in the description of other models as well.
I wouldnt trust these guys as far as I could throw them.

Does anyone know of an online store for Paradigm speakers? I know the Paradigm web site says they do not sell online. There are no local dealers in my area.
Just go to Audiogon, there are tons of Paradigm speakers available there for a much better bargain then New, unless you are looking for new like the Studio .v5's then you SOL...
osofast240sx 01-14-09, 09:40 AM 6ave but I'm confused as to how or why they are allowed to sell themi called 6ave, I was told they are only allowed to sell the mellina series online
Logic_BomB 01-14-09, 10:28 AM Regardless of what 6ave says, I would go with what Paradigm's own website states.
If you really, really want to believe 6ave, send paradigm an email or give them a call asking if they are in fact telling the truth.
Don't look for the answer you want to hear, look for the truth.

I started a thread but didnt get any bites. Im hoping you guys can help me out.
Ive aquired some in wall speakers made by Paradigm. Model numbers are below
ams 250v2 x3
ams 300 x2
ams 350 x3
So I have 8 speakers total. I was considering keeping two of the 250's for my basement and selling the rest. Ive been searching on google for these and was trying to determine a price for them. I was also considering in keeping them, and changing the speakers in my family room to these. However the way I have my room set up I cannot use in walls for my fronts or center channel without changing alot. http://www.scheerhomesystems.com/pro...d_speakers.htm
If you click that link and scroll down just a little, thats what the speakers look like. I appreciate any help you can provide
I was hoping to get an idea for price before I sell them. I was going to try to sell locally before I put them on Fleabay. I was also going to call a few audio shops and see if the purchase used stuff. Ive searched online and am really having a hard time finding used prices on these. Actually I havent found any. Theres a ton of sites with specs, but since they are a few years old, nobody sells them anymore.
JimmyDaves 01-14-09, 03:25 PM Hey Everyone:
Has anyone heard or have any knowledge/information on the Signature W5's? I was just wondering if they match well with speakers like the Signature 8's and C5's and what type of sound quality they have. they look pretty awesome but I don't have a dealer near me that has these in stock. Thanks!!

I just got v6 Monitor 11s and a CC-390.. should these be set to small or large using a YAMAHA 6190.. what does it actually do.. I am using a sub(SVS pb10-nsd).....and what should I set crossover to?
Thanks!

I think you could get 100 to 200 bucks a pair depending on the time listed on ebay. I have not seen many of these lately. I tend to watch for used in-walls to use in some of my investment houses for a less expensive high end install. Doubt any local stores would buy these for what they are worth but that is based on southeast area that I am familiar with. Just my .02.

I would reccomend setting to small and manually setting crossover to 60hz. Let the sub do its job.
I have purchased from 6ave. I am unsure about millenia series but the other speakers that are allowed to be sold are open box or returned items. Hence the discount. I have received great products each time but be aware that there could be some cosmetic issues.
the call for price means they only allow local pickup and will not ship those items. It all relates to territory issues with other dealers.

Does it come in original packaging and mfg warranty cause with coupon codes you can get some decent deals.
What are local dealers discount off msrp?

Small and Large means how much low-frequency information is going to be sent to them. Some people use "large" when their speakers can produce good bass on their own. Some people always set it to "small" simple because they feel it's the subwoofers job so why divvy up the load? Other people just set the cross-over (the point at which the bass switches over to the subwoofer) manually between 60-100.
Try them all - it's just a simple setting and you can tell if you like it or not.
our local dealers might go 5% with a system. Yes the packaging was original.

If you didn't already know this, according to Paradigm's website, your speakers should be able to go down to 48hz. Setting the x-over at 60 means you hand off 12 hz that your speaker should be technically able to output. Most people do about 80 I think (or that's THX anyway iirc) which means you're then handing over 32hz your speakers should be able to handle.
How good your sub/speakers are in this "overlap" area will probably determine where you want to set the crossover. If you think your speaker sounds better than your sub between 48 and 60 you may want to set the crossover to 48. If you think your sub kicks the speaker's ass all the up way to 80, by all means.
(Im no expert by any stretch just to be honest here. I'm fairly certain I'm in right ballpark on this one though).
goonstopher 01-15-09, 01:49 PM Hey everyone,
I went back to my local retailer because it was 27 days after i purchased studio 20 V.4's for my rears. Due to complications one was never opened and neither was hooked up so I was still barely within their 30 day return policy and decided to go with ADP-590's. Since my fronts are just Studio 60 V.3 and cc-570 I was ok with V.4's for rears since they would be on the opposite sound stage... Well, V.4's are 100% sold out company wide for my retailer BUT v.5's will be in within a week! Even better...They honored the 25% off sale they had on the v.4's for the new v.5's. I ended up getting the ADP-590 v.5's for just $1050!
Just a heads up...
If you want V.4's at closeout prices or want to pre-order v.5's then now might be the time.

Hmm interesting idea... Simple yet easy to forget. I have Studio 60 V.3 and a PB13 Ultra from SVS and have yet to hook it up and set the corssover but was thinking atleast 80hz

If you get freindly with your 6th ave rep you can get 25% off without much negotiation. They have a super volume of sales and just want any profit.
Even the v5's which are not in yet can be had for 25% off...
mrted46 01-15-09, 03:06 PM Is there a difference between the Studio 100 v1 and v4 besides the obvious age?
Logic_BomB 01-15-09, 04:24 PM Yes. I don't know the specifics but I know for sure that different parts are used.
I remember one pro reviewer (home theater mag I think?) went so far as to say he replaced his whole Studio 20 V.2 setup, the one he uses at home for personal use, because the Studio 20 v.3 was cleanere/more accurate to his ears.
My guess is when the company finds a better way of doing things (more deurable material, better sounding woofer, better tweater design, etc...) they make a revision and update the line with the new do-dads.

goonstopher 01-15-09, 04:42 PM To be honest... the ADP 590 V4 and V5 are most likely IDENTICAL...
My reasoning? Their is no price difference... Some of the speakers like the Studio 100'a are going up a lot but some will stay the same.
I can;t wait to see how the 590's work with my v3 frontstage.
I really wish I held out for the V5's because the curved shape looks awsome and should improve the bass output. oh well.
Logic_BomB 01-15-09, 05:10 PM To play devils advocate here, the ADP's may have stayed the same price because their market research shows that to be the price the market will accept.
Why change the version number if the model stays the same? To appear better? Speaker companies have a very (overly?) inquisitive audience. They test, view specs, look at the materials used in the design, etc...
To cry wolf would be suicide for their reputation.
goonstopher 01-15-09, 05:28 PM I just figured on the ADP they changed the version number to keep it in line with the rest of the line... meaning why continue selling v4's and have everything else be v5's? It would make a lot of people apprehensive about purcahsing them i am sure feeling in some way they must be worse or dated ect.

As a retired salon owner and retailer of Paradigm products for nearly 20 years. Our experience with them, unlike other manufacturers, Paradigm is reticent to change models just to have a new version out there. In fact the Monitor Series changed to v5 just bout a year ago. V4 was around a long time and when they improved the Siggies, they took some of the siggie engineering and implemented it using less costly components. In fact, there is now a v6 for Mini Monitor being reviewed in the audio press.
The ADP products have never been strong sellers at any time and rarely changed pricing. They are a unique cat and mostly bought by folks who truly know about rear reflection & dispersion and are willing to forgo pinpoint imaging in rear surround produced by dipoles. It doesn't make them any lessor a product, though I refer it as the "Bose" effect. A kinda nebulous gauzy dispersed sound.
goonstopher 01-15-09, 06:35 PM For movies ADP's make sense to me... This is a convo that a whole lot of much smarter people have argued about but from my simpleton understanding, I went out of my way to spend the extra money for ADP's because having sound all around you is just "cool"
I think ADP's were great before the rear channels became discreet and now with DTS-MA
and Dolby Tru they probably are not selling as well.

Whatever rings your chimes.;)
I am coming from a strictly purist standpoint and since the introduction of Dolby 5.1 in theater and subsequently home use, direct radiators were the choice and still are(for theater).
However, in the home environment (for all but the most wealthy), there is so little you really can do to control time domain, reflective, absorptive, nulls and peaks. By adding a dipole, for most the part just compounds the inaccuracy of the surround effect regardless of your electronics, their brand, price, cabling, or sound treatment i.e. Audyssy and the like.
Hey, if your happy, I'm happy:)
It becomes problematic when a friend, relative, neighbor or near-do-well, bring to the attention of the well meaning Home theater owner, the sound is not all it "could be". Thus the dealer gets the blame for not "knowing this stuff" and allowing said "well meaning home owner" to buy the "Dipole of the hour".
I am far from being innocent of this treatise, after all one must pay bills and feed the brethren good or bad. However, given the chance to really aid the buyer, my call after seeing the environment would inevitability find a Direct radiator would more than suffice and save the buyer as well. (This sometimes helped the buyer in adding higher quality cabling which always improved the sound with money to spare):p
You ride side French style, the purists ride Western, and you know what they say about the French:rolleyes:
goonstopher 01-15-09, 07:45 PM I know all that stuff but when the speakers are forced to be placed close to your listening position then direct radiating speakers can identify themselves way too much and be distracting.
urmystlkal 01-15-09, 08:00 PM So if you need surround speakers that must be wall mounted, then what would be the best choice if ADP's are not? Particularly with Studio 100's and 690 up front.
goonstopher 01-15-09, 08:30 PM I would go listen to them to decide... I am not an audiophile so to me the effect was "cool" andf worth the price. The technical answer is they aren't the best but it does "wow" more people who arent audiophiles.
ginovino 01-15-09, 08:39 PM Not knowing the Dimensions of your room, especially its width, if its 8ft or more then ADP's should be avoided at all costs (assuming the ceiling is commonly shared from one side of the room to the other). Place the direct radiators using quality wall mount speaker mounts( not shelves)
Here is what we suggested for speakers up to 50lbs:
http://www.hometheaterdirect.net/walspeakbrac.html
These are extremely adjustable!

Well crap, there goes me thinking I had all my speaker decisions made. It's a 15x17' room, no windows, 2 solid core doors. I attached the layout of it. There are columns in the back that kinda jack up speaker placement. The speakers will be right on the inside of the side columns (closer to the front wall). If I were to add a 2nd row wouldn't that row be screwed w/ direct firing at the front row? Room probably too small for 2 rows anyway, haven't decided yet. We are building this house right now so I can't go play around in it and see what works, lol

I'll address your situation first.
If the room is in the basement, you want at least 9ft ceilings or dig the floor to make that happen. If not, its a sacrifice that can't be solved with a few $ and top notch sound walls and studding and sound deadening products.
The ceilings in all AV rooms must be the same height from one wall to the other or you will get Time domain sync issues(almost like reverb, except they kill audio depth perception and sound stage, resolution)
You have left so many questions unanswered even with your pix. But the good news, it appears you have provided space behind the walls to allow access to move around. you have a very nice room , while geometric, it has less nulls and peaks and may be somewhat more easily to solve sonic issues.
While I do not intend to comment on your decorating scheme, maybe faux 1/2 columns secured to the walls would be less sonically obvious.
Your room is open to do whatever you want.. I wish I had such a gift.

The room is on the upstairs. We have no basements here in TX, lol :).
The dotted line on that floor plan was the ceiling soffet (i think that's what it's called), not a wall. The columns that will be in the room aren't really anything special. They are built into the wall and stick out about 3.25 inches or so They are probably about 1.5' wide. Here are some pics of the media room in the model home. The room will be the same except mine will be completely black :) and those columns they have are a little bigger because they put a "wood" covering around them. Mine are a bit smaller.
The ceilings are 8' or so I believe to the soffets that extend about 2.75' out then go up to the 10' ceiling. The ceiling slopes down from the 10' to 8' back at the screen. Not sure if you can tell what i mean in these pics or not. BTW, I plan on putting the side surrounds where that A/C return vent is, that will be mounted to the bottom side of the soffet in the ceiling. I plan on only doing 5.1 right now as I've been told by many the room isn't really big enough to benefit from 7.1
Hope this wasn't confusing :)

That's the exact system I was planning on doing...along w/ adding the 2 MFW 15's that I have :). Not so sure about the ADP's anymore though. I thought the v5's weren't available yet? Aren't we just now seeing pics about them?
dragodrago 01-15-09, 11:11 PM My dealer ordered them on Jan 12th, I origionally ordered rosenut v4's but was informed that they could not get a rosenut c690 so they gave me the option to go to the new v5's so I jumped on that. Should be in early next week. As far as the ADP's, I guess it is a matter of personal taste, but I much prefer the open spacious sound of the ADP's compared to the Studio 20's. Also you could try the Studio 10's for 7.1 on the side to compare. Making the switch from Klipsch RF 35's , RB 25's , RS 42's, RC 35 and keeping the SVS Ultra 13.
JimmyDaves 01-15-09, 11:23 PM When I read reviews in several publications, online and printed, and they rave about how well the ADP's (whether it's Studio or Signatures) that leads us laymen to think that we need ADP's in our system to make it sound like a "home theater".
I've tried direct-radiating speakers at the sides and I agree with a previous poster that it was too distracting. With ADP's, to me it's almost like a speaker that "transitions" the sound from the front to the rear, especially in 7.1 setup, where having direct-firing speakers are supposed to be used at the rear of the listening position.
I found that worked for me to have my front 3, ADP's at the side and direct-firing at the rear and I did feel that sense of "envelopement" that those of us who are wanting the "home theater experience" are wanting to feel.
If I was was playing my home theater based on a 5.1 configuation, I can absolutely agree with Ginovino on his assessment of speakers to be used. The placement would be different from 7.1 to 5.1 and accordingly I would use direct-firing at the rear of the listening area.
Question about the new W5 On Wall speakers from Paradigm? There must be someone who's heard these or seen them or knows more about them than me. I have the Signature 8's and C5 up front and the W5's look like a C5 Center speaker. The pictures I've seen of them have been in conjunction with using a front projector. One at the bottom of the screen and the other two on the left and right of the screen. These W5's are supposed to be wall-mounted and they do look very attractive and have I believe the exact same driver's that are in my C5 Signature Center.
Of course, the Paradigm Website doesn't tell you much about them except with pictures, but if I was going with a 5.1 system, I'm thinking that they'd make a perfect match with Signature S8's and a C5? Ginovino, maybe you can jump in here and let us know your thoughts?
Thanks! Jimmy

Looking at that pic of your room (bedroom?) Im just wondering where you're going to mount/place those ADP's and how you're going to make them work?
I understand you like a "diffuse" sound rather than having it blast right into your ear but you could have positioned the 20's accordingly.
I just cant see how the dipoles are going to work in that room.

Going to have to put them on bookcases behind the listening area with auralex modpads under them
As I understand it, dipoles are to be either placed on stands alongside the listening area or mounted on both walls high up and just behind the listening
area. These ADP's you have are going to be directly behind the listening area?
I cant see this working out at all.......

Of course all of that gets shot to shXX when you introduce Audyssy or YPAO when correcting your rooms audio as most serious HT folks will do. Besides, THX certified HTR & Pre's are usually the top tier $$$ units which the majority of HT enthusiasts DON"T own.

This should answer your and all others question about subs.:)
ginovino 01-16-09, 09:28 AM Yosh is right on about placement.
After 28 years, I still have yet to find the answer as to why audio 1st timers or new HT'ers attempt to change the placement of speaker designers placement instructions???
goonstopher 01-16-09, 09:39 AM av123 is still too scary... I had to go with SVS personally and the PB13 Ultra is supposed to beat the seismic 12 and even the servo 15 I think.
ginovino 01-16-09, 09:42 AM The room is on the upstairs.
IMHO, i believe your right on. (besides its an attractive looking room)
If you were to use Dipoles even between those shallow columns the extrusion of the columns would affect the radiation pattern to some degree. UNLESS, you attach the Dipole to the exterior of the column :( which kills aesthetics. Ergo the direct radiator.
You may have room for 2 rows of seats be sure to raise the floor on the 2nd set and be certain to stagger the seats for viewing purposes.
Lastly, when doing the construction, think ahead and run PVC pipe through the ceiling and wall beams for all of your wiring to pass through. It will simplify pull through and It makes a dramatic difference in the future when you get wealthy and desire to kill the 16 gauge lamp cord and replace with Kimber 8TC or AQ 6. It sounds crazy, but in a couple of years you'll thank me posthumously.:)

I am being a bit heavy handed with this response do to your lack of substantive facts, details or documented information.
As in most cases, you may been putting together a piece of this, a smattering of that, hearsay, innuendo and just plain BS that someone laid on you. Or simply just plain brand bias, which is perfectly fine and frankly more acceptable than supposition or vapid groundless inaccuracies.
To be sure, much of the Paradigm line are serious quality audio reproducers, HOWEVER, they are NOT ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE.
Please understand rhetoric has its place, though in a forum such as this which many come to for learning, accurate information and a search for knowledge, we must temper our urge for spewing obfuscation and just plain wishful thinking. I, among all have been guilty of early on.;)

I hi jacked this response to place on the table once and for all the acknowledged Trieste for subwoofer performance and comparative rankings among all known brands.

Let me state empirically, that I have no vested interest or benefit from the AV123 company or its management nor employees.
I too incurred an amp that went dead on me within weeks of receiving my own MFW-15's. I called in and was sent a replacement within a week of the call. The amp has been performing splendidly since Feb 2008.
The early reviews of this sub and reasonable price caused a great demand from buyers. Indeed at the beginning, growing pains impacted this product, however these have tempered dramatically in recent months and are virtually are non existent.
Absolute SPL means little, if the sound your hearing is indeed inaccurate, or fails to be musical. Case in point stadium sound systems, loud yes, accurate...hmmm, lets guess:rolleyes:
Get the picture?
As for the absolute SPL for the Servo 15, I too believe it is a DB or two higher than the MFW-15, however it is also less musical, ergo less desirable to the astute audiophile who eschews brand names or allegiances.
Caveat Emptor!
I say no more on the subject. ;)
Easyaspie 01-16-09, 10:44 AM I know all that stuff but when the speakers are forced to be placed close to your listening position then direct radiating speakers can identify themselves way too much and be distracting.
Shouldn't if you calibrate correctly.
Like Oztech said, before discrete surround channels, di-pole was great, not so much now.
Easyaspie 01-16-09, 10:50 AM to the side/behind... real hard to explain.
Like 3.5 feet back and 3.5 feet to the side each
With di-poles you are supposed to sit in the "null". For the effect to work you have to have the speakers at your sides with one set of drivers aiming just forward of you and the other set aimed just rear of you.
Anything else is just smearing the sound around.

I get that but nearly every review from an owner of the ADP's is very positive. The logical answer is that they are not the best but everyone who has them seems to love them. thats all that matters to me.

I know this has been debated at great length. I also know what di-pole/bi-pole speakers try to accomplish. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me to take sounds that are supposed to be placed in certain spots and "diffuse" and, IMHO, smear them around.
Since DD and dts, surround sound has been, after all, discrete.
The simple solution for me was to borrow equipment from my friends and judge for

I have not. I actually haven't even gotten a chance to listen to both of them hooked up at the same time! I ordered them because they were on sale and could get 2 nice subs for $1000 plus free $200 credit for use at AV123. I ordered them based on reviews and price and trusted peoples opinion. I can't use them in my apartment so they are sitting at my moms house waiting for my house to be built. I opened them up to inspect them and hooked each one up to make sure they work then they went back in the box. :( I must say, they rocked! Even w/ only 1 hooked up, they kicked ass. I can't wait to have everything hooked up and have a dedicated theater room!
As far as the ADP speakers vs. direct firing. I guess once the room is built I'll just have to try both and see which I prefer. Still haven't really decided on the Studio 100's vs the 60's. I think w/ my 2 subs and the speakers set to small the 100's won't really add much to it. Though I could be wrong.

What can you say to that except.......amen. :D
Logic_BomB 01-16-09, 11:51 AM Would speaker palcement as per my attachment seem ideal for the situation? Room restraints are really quite a concern. I have *just* enough room to put speakers next to the seats and behind isn't an option because of the wall. (please note the room opens up to the left but a support piller I've ommited makes moving the theater left impossible so I just used a wall for all intents and purposes)
I understand that the seats next to the speakers might be a little distracted by surround effects and the middle seat might miss some of them entirely but the main seating is the real concern 90% of the time since me and my wife take up the rear for our guests.
goonstopher 01-16-09, 12:19 PM I never knew adp's were so passe. I feel like I just said I was insulating my house with esbestos and painting it with lead paint.
Not putting the ADP'S down and I do believe they are the best option for some rooms
and material with a mono rear channel.
I never knew adp's were so passe. I feel like I just said I was insulating my house with esbestos and painting it with lead paint.
I have had Studio ADP's in my room and consequently sold them to purchase
Studio 20's.....the criteria for dipoles is you have to have the correct room for them to work properly. With a room that does not have walls parallel to each other and nooks on one side at certain lengths, they certainly didnt work for me. You will find out in time I'm guessing.
I currently have the Studio 100's v2. For the center I'm using a Boston Acoustics cr12 (about the same size as the cc590)which I am thinking of swapping out for the cc690 v5.
Would the new cc690 be a good match for the older 100's?
Good news....I have Studio 100's V2 with last year's CC690 and they go together beautifully. Now, I'm not sure what they changed for this version but you can always email Gary (Paradigm) to find out.
miltimj 01-16-09, 03:51 PM As I understand it, dipoles are to be either placed on stands alongside the listening area or mounted on both walls high up and just behind the listening
area. These ADP's you have are going to be directly behind the listening area?
I cant see this working out at all.......
The listening positions should be directly between the dipoles, so you're sitting in the null area (as opposed to "just behind the listening area" that you stated). Height should be slightly above listening position. (Edit: Noticed easyaspie already mentioned this.)
I'm debating the same thing as far as whether to use dipoles or directs for the side surrounds. ADPs should definitely not be used in the rear, though, since nobody is sitting in the null at that point.

To add to this, run wires from the riser(s) to the equipment rack in case you want to install shakers later. Or install them initially.
And he shouldn't need to stagger the seats if the riser is the right height.
jd_cincy 01-16-09, 10:34 PM Hey Paradigm owners! I've been thinking of getting the studio series for my new home theater room and had some questions. My current receiver is the Yamaha v663 and I already have 2 MFW15 subs. Eventually I can add an amp to the 663 but can't really afford to do it at the moment since we are building a new house and having to buy everything.
1st question: Studio 60 vs Studio 100. I've done lots of reading on here but still haven't decided which would be better. The room will be a 15x17 fully enclosed room. With the 2 subs, do I need the Studio 100's or will the 60's be good enough? I'll spend the extra money if need be but I didn't know if it'd be wasted and I wouldn't really notice a difference getting the 100's since the lower sound will already be taken care of. Still undecided on which center channel also. Probably 690 just because, lol.
2nd question: Will that receiver (v663) perform well enough for the time being? I'm thinking about adding the Emotiva UPA-7 eventually since it's not too expensive and gets good reviews but won't be adding it anytime soon.
The sides will be the ADP-590's obviously. Thanks for any help. I won't have my house complete until April so I still have lots of time for research but just trying to get things narrowed down.
Sorry to bump, but you're in a similar position as I was....
I auditioned both speakers recently, hoping to enjoy the 40's or 60's paired with my SVSPB13U and save a few bucks. Unfortunately, I could tell a -huge- difference in midrange clarity between the 60's and 100.... after checking specs, I believe this is due to crossover design. Now, I don't expect to use full range all the time on the 100's, but I guess it's nice to have that low end if you want to do a purist 2-channel listening session.

Goonstopher:
I believe that Ginovino knows his subs and alot about Paradigms and he has given me very good, solid advice for a very long time. I ended up with Paradigm speakers because of him and also four (4) MFW-15 Subs directly from his advice and I couldn't be happier. Ginovino knows what he's talking about.

Well the builder wants to charge outrageous amounts to run conduit in the walls so if I do decide I want to change wire out I'm going to try attatching it to one end of the wire and seeing if I can pull it through. I'll tell them to make sure to leave it loose so I can pull it, hopefully that will work well. They are running conduit to the projector location though which I am glad about it. Otherwise they'd probably rip me off on the HDMI cable, lol. I am getting 2 sets of wire ran to the front 3 locations in case I'd like to try biwiring or something eventually.
goonstopher 01-16-09, 11:17 PM When I heard Dipoles at my dealer they were on the rear wall directly behind the seating position and it still sounded good to me. I might just be an idiot I guess.
JimmyDaves 01-16-09, 11:22 PM Goonstopher:
No, you're not an idiot. I actually felt the same way when I put my ADP's on the rear wall behind my listening area. I felt it gave me more of a sense of envelopment during movies, however with music recordings, both DVD and CD, it was a little too spread out, but it was still good enough for me.
Paradigms instructions actually state to place surrounds on the rear walls and that's what confused me in the beginning. I wanted to put a pair of ADP's on the sides and a pair on the rear wall, but most everyone here on this forum said that directing firing speakers on the rear wall would be the best bet.
I'm not completely convinced. I could go either way on this, but I still think that having side ADPs and rear ADPs would sound very nice in a home theater environment.
goonstopher 01-16-09, 11:25 PM I am making speaker stands for mine so I can play with the angle and positioning (and because I dont have a free wall).
JimmyDaves 01-16-09, 11:29 PM goonstopher:
What height are you thinking about to put those speakers if you use the stands?
goonstopher 01-16-09, 11:36 PM About 38 Inches or so. My center has its tweeter perfectly at my ear level which is about 35 inches.
WaTaGuMp 01-17-09, 12:51 AM I use dipoles on my rear wall but my couch is also against the rear wall, so for me it was a no brainer over directs. They work fine when they are used for what they were made for.

Thanks Yosh, not sure if they have any deals on the last years cc690's if they still have them.
I'll give Gary a call next week and see what he recommends.
An old original pair of Atoms are my side surrounds and maybe a replacement in the form of Studio Adp's may also be in the works.
I felt guilty when my Studio 100's were eq'd for a crossover of 80hz to let the SVS pb13u take over!

This is precisely what I found as well (and my wife, too). The midrange clarity is better, especially in 2-channel listening. It's debatable whether the difference is noticeable in a 7.1 setup for movies, though. So as to whether the additional cost is worth it, IMO it comes down to the amount of 2-channel listening that you do. I listen to a decent amount of 2-channel now, but once they move into a dedicated HT, it will be much less often. If I started from scratch in a dedicated HT, I'd probably go with 40s all around, but that particular opinion is not based on extensive listening either.
miltimj 01-17-09, 11:13 AM goonstopher and JimmyDaves,
I need a serious upgrade to my surrounds, and have been researching this for a while now. I think I need a good listening session to compare the two types (dipole/direct). I used to think the ADPs were a no-brainer, especially once the 590s came out with a similar design to the Sig ADPs (mono woofer).
But I've read many logical arguments against dipoles for the sides, and especially rears, since then:
- For dipoles/bipoles, what you hear from them actually comes from the direction of the wall to which the drivers are firing. That means the sides will sound like they're coming from the rear (and a negligible amount from the front since that mostly gets washed out from the fronts and typically additional distance), whereas the rears sound like they're coming from the sides.
- Dipoles work as intended only when the user sits in the "null zone" (neither driver is firing toward the listener). For those with multiple rows of seating, the sound is very much different for each row. The typical recommendation in the dedicated HT builders forum is to optimize one row when using dipoles, and the other row suffers. My current thought is if it's a dedicated HT, it would likely be large enough that you could use wide-dispersion directs and get a better result.
- For rear dipoles (especially 7.1), a given listener will typically be in the null zone for only one of the speakers. Thus a dipole / dispersed sound is coming from one of them, but a more direct (yet "angled") sound is coming from the other. I think most would agree that "directs" have a particular sound, and dipoles have a particular sound, and different people prefer one or the other, and the room is of course a factor, as well. I'm not so sure there are many that would prefer a mixture of the two!
- Probably the most significant argument I've seen against dipoles comes from their history. They originally were intended for use when there were no discrete surround channels, and they were trying to "create" a 5.1 mix using Dolby Pro Logic from a stereo signal. That was quite the benefit, having dispersed sound in the surrounds that seemed distinct from the fronts. The reason it worked is that there was no need to ensure sounds were coming from a specific location in the room, since that data wasn't available. It would come from either the left or right side (generally), but there was no way for Pro Logic to know whether it was "mostly behind you, but toward the right", or "directly to the right of you". With discrete 7.1 now available, the specificity is there, which dipole completely muddies by its very design. So it's not that dipole is a poor design (like an original high quality SDTV).. just that there is much better source material that the dipoles won't be able to accurately reproduce, whereas directs will (like a modern HDTV now).
As I said, ultimately a listening session is necessary. As is an evaluation of your room (or a soon to be future room, in my case) is also important; as WaTaGuMp mentioned, if your listening positions are against the back wall, etc, directs may seem too overpowering to one particular location.
goonstopher 01-17-09, 11:26 AM I spent above my budget to get the ADP's over the studio 20's and have returned TOO many things to me dealer who has been VERY fair so basically I need them to workout well in my room really really badly.
/dev/null 01-17-09, 07:36 PM ...have returned TOO many things to me dealer...
If you're not happy, or have to jump through too many hoops to make them work right, by all means... take them back. That's what the dealer is there for. Not to sell you things you don't need, or can't use.

see if your builder will allow you to run the conduit. Old milwaukee hawg hole saw, pvc pipe and some fire sealant for the holes created and you should be within code nationally and be able to pull whatever you want in the future. if he says no would doubt how legit of builder he is. it is not rocket science. I am on house number five and second one with this builder and am doing all low voltage myself. Have over 2 miles to pull so far on my plan.
Any reputable builder should be able to give you local code and allow you to do it yourself. Will make future upgrades a breeze. Otherwise make sure they don't staple the wire to the studs if you are thinking of pulling new wire in future.
Anyway, won't hurt to ask and wouldn't take longer than an afternoon to accomplish.

Of course I have. Hence the question. How bad do I really have it now?
He didn't test the Paradigm line and therefore I was looking for anyone's opinion who had actually listened to them either in comparison or separately. For my new theater room I will be filling about 6600 cubic feet and was considering 2 Conquests, 4 from the av123 line or a couple svs. So if anyone has any input, I would be interested in comparisons or how your sub(s) are performing in similar environments.

Not allowed to do anything myself. No wire runs or anything. Been there tried that. Would be much cheaper, lol. They don't allow any outside contractors or anything on their homes. Says so in the contract. They will do almost anything asked, but it cost $$. If I could run stuff myself, I'd have cat5 in all the rooms plus more. :( Oh well, it is what it is. The builder is ranked high whenever I look them up, always good things. Ranked high on JD Power as well. They just don't want any liability from anything, they can't cover the house if they didn't put it there, which I understand...just sucks

our second home was with a national builder but they did allow certain subs in that did the alarms and some custom sound . I was able to deal directly with them to just do the prewires. One thing i have learned is that most things in life ARE negotiable. Just a thought.
If you build in the future however, I have found that there is a misconception that true custom homes are more expensive than those by national builders. I must say that that is not true. Just need to find a great custom builder. Even so, with my case, I am running the wires to avoid that $$$ per drop cost.
One more thought is that the sheetrockers often cover your prewires. It might be good to have then run them back and forth between the studs like a web to make it easy tofind once you punch for your speakers if you are doing in wall or ceiling speakers. If you are using outlets then no problem. Trust me it is not fun to try to find a loose wire in the ceiling through an 8 inch hole.
best of luck.
lashinsky 01-18-09, 02:41 PM Hi. I am new to this thread and was wondering of anyone would recommend a Denon AVR 3808ci for powering studio 100's v4, pair of ADP 590's, cc-690 and a servo15 v2. Just thought you guys would know. Thanks. Already have the speakers.

It'll do just fine and has pre-outs for using and external amp later down the line if you wish to go that direction...
michael630 01-18-09, 03:55 PM Has anyone wall mounted the S1 Sigs for the rears?
rtwilbur 01-19-09, 04:59 PM Looking to upgrade my Cinema 330's....
I was at my local Minneapolis dealer and they had 20% off all v.4 Studio speakers. Only had the floor model of the cc-590 v.4 left and wouldn't budge from the flat 20% off...said new in the box was 20% and the floor model that was used he couldn't do any better....so I walked and I'm pretty erked that they wouldn't come down anymore on the floor model of the speaker being replaced.
So anyway, after thinking about it...I think I'm going to go for upgrading all three fronts.....so with the CC-590...also get the Studio 40v.4 for left and right.
I've also heard of some dealers taking pre-orders for studio v.5 for the discounted v.4 prices too. I guess in that case I could do the 20.v5 and the cc-590 v.5
Without talking specific prices on here...if anyone knows any dealers or individuals that might want a sale, that has v.4 Studio gear to clear out,....or doing the discounted v.5 prices....please PM me...I'm ready to buy and giving up on my local dealer....or I guess if anyone has a sales person at Stereoland in Eden Prairie, MN that will deal....the one I talked to did NOT.
miltimj 01-19-09, 05:39 PM Yeah, Stereoland is not flexible in their prices. I got my front three from them - not much choice as they're the only local dealer. Typically they'll only be 15% below MSRP new, so 20% is only because they're clearing them out. If those prices are showstoppers for you, you may want to look at some used ones.

You folks in "fly over" country really get screwed compared to the coasts and Florida.
Paradigm's dealer cost is 60% plus shipping.
That being said. Tell that yokel, those units will sit on his floor as he continues to pay dealer freight and carry costs until he sells them. Ask him his shipping cost and then say your will give 15% over invoice plus shipping and local taxes to take them away now.
Because, ultimately, he will have to sell them, never at a loss ... but less then he would like. This is business... tell him good press will follow, or it could be bad press... which in this economy... no one can afford.
Be firm but factual.;)
Those of your who know me by my posts, I am a retired Salon owner which sold Paradigm of nearly 20 years and among their first and largest dealers in the New York area.
ginovino 01-19-09, 09:16 PM Has anyone wall mounted the S1 Sigs for the rears?
How do you hand $1.2k worth of speakers on the wall???? are you mad?
ginovino 01-19-09, 09:33 PM our second home was with a national builder but they did allow certain subs in that did the alarms and some custom sound .
I have contracted with Dr. Horton In Pradera development in Colorado.
They too said " oh no we can't do that, or that not even that... But give us a $100 and we will check the possibilities. I wanted my Kitchen to have soft closing cabinets and doors, as well no mullions between the cabinet doors allowing full width access to the upper shelves as well as full width roll out trays for pots and pans on the lower levels.
I called the manufacturer of the brand of cabinets (Merrilot) they were installing , and spoke with the rep. who was handling DR Horton in Colorado and guess what... for a mere $6k I got 32 running feet of cabinets upper & lower with everything I wanted.
I wanted a 10ft basement rafters, so I could plan my own home theater and a listening room... "can't do", you won't a have a walkout , just a garden view..... Great! works for me!!!! Guess what?????
Garden view is 1 ft short of a walkout! go Figure
I then asked them to run 4" PVC through the studs and rafters for my speaker and cat 6 cabling.....OH NO! We can't do that! I called the architect of DR Horton Pradaera and told him what I planned and how many times in the future I would be re=running cabling.. What would it cost to redraw plans specific to my house..=($500) and a $50 filing fee. Guess what??? I also had them throw on a 400 amp service for future possibilities with breakout boxes of (2x)100 amp each for the audio and home theater.
Throw it on the bill.
Custom and Tract builders are full of crap... money talks and BS walks.
You really have to stand your ground and most important ... do not represent yourself in these dealings!!! Hire a Buyers representative(local real estate agent)!.. They get paid by the builder!!!!!!!!

michael630 01-19-09, 10:14 PM gino-my thought was the speaker would set on some type of platform, similar to a floor stand. the difference is the platform would attach to the wall. i'm not speaking of drilling holes in the speaker if this is your thought. sorry if i posted poorly. you've never encountered a situation where there wasn't adequate space for the rear listening position? example, a family room that opens to a kitchen, so there is no rear wall. i would think this is a common challenge for ht setup in modern homes. no?

shawnwalters 01-19-09, 10:35 PM My theater build is nearing completion and I am contemplating upgrading my speakers to a better line of Paradigms. I only watch movies - action, drama etc, not really into listening to music in the HT. My room is 14.5x19.5, double drywall, acoustic treatments on first reflections and several other places.
I currently have:
4 Paradigm Atom back/surround speakers
2 Paradigm Monitor 7 Fronts
1 Paradigm cc-190 center
1 Paradigm pdr sub
Denon AVR2808CI
My question is, would it be worth it to upgrade to say the studio series for the fronts and the center? If so what models? And would I need a more powerful amp? And if I do need a more powerful amp, can I still use the 2808 for anything? And would the atoms still be ok for the surrounds?
Thanks,
Shawn

Thanks I was thinking more along the lines of the studio 40's or so. Too small? Another reason Im thinking of upgrading is because they will be very close to the front wall (actually in recessed cavities). I know that's not the best, but we're doing it for aesthetics. Anyway, the monitor 7's are rear ported and I don't think the studios are. So would that help alleviate some of the problems I'm going to have with the being so close to the wall issue?

Mike:
Paradigm makes an "on wall" speaker called the W5. Apparently there is a W5 speaker for a center and one made for mains. I know that the W5 is a Signature line, but I don't know anything else about them. I've tried to find reviews on them and have posted here a couple of times asking for information on these new speakers and I can't find any reviews and no one has told me anything about them here on this thread. But these are an option if you are wanting to mount speakers on the wall! Jimmy

Agreed with the other response. I just got the 3808ci over the weekend, and I'm powering Paradigm Signature 8's, a C5, some in-ceiling Paradigms, a Signature Servo, and a Servo 15. Sounds spectacular with the Denon. My room was problematic -- and I can't afford Anthem stuff yet (just got the Signatures!) -- and the room correction in the 3808 made a HUGE difference in my room. Happy shopping!

urmystlkal 01-20-09, 04:04 PM see if your builder will allow you to run the conduit.
Okay my options are:
For free I get 16g wire ran for 5.1 setup. To upgrade to 14g wire they want to charge an outrageous $425 and for 12g wire they want $675.
Now for 1 - 1 1/2" conduit ran to 5 speaker locations and no wire ran it is $415. That's an easy decision. Conduit here I come. He will still run 1 coaxial cable for the subwoofer and no charge and for an extra one for my 2nd sub it's an additional $90. For speaker wire only will that size conduit be enough? I'm sure I could go bigger but I'm sure it would double the price. Everything is expensive with them, lol.
What do you guys think?
Chase
miltimj 01-20-09, 04:14 PM Wow, that is completely insane. I'm so glad I'm going to build one myself some day.
I would force the issue that you want to do it yourself. Even if you have to pay some up front cost for the "right" to do it (I can't believe I'm saying that).
You could buy all the 12AWG wire you want for $100.. $675!!

What is he using siver wire as was said see if there is a possibility to run the wire yourself.
urmystlkal 01-20-09, 04:51 PM Can not run it myself. That would be the too easy. I've tried and pushed for it. Their contracts even state no outside contractors. Nothing I can do about that. I either have them do it or it doesn't get done. Or you know, tear down the walls and do it myself after closing, lol. Isn't that **** outrageous?? For any extra cable drops, they charge $90. So if I want coaxial ran in one room along w/ cat 5, that's extra $90. Needless to say I'm just going w/ coaxial all over the house. The media room comes w/ 2 cat 5 and 1 coaxial.
I already put down my deposit on the house so if I were to back out I'd be screwed on $8,000. I can't wait to see what they'll charge for double dry wall and green glue! I'll prolly just add a 2nd layer of drywall and green glue myself one day.
Will that conduit at least be big enough?

Got an Idea for you..... the builder will be sub contracting all the work... Just buy all the 12ga wire you need from Monoprice or Bluejeans Cable, and then when the guys that are running the wire show up to do the work, just show up with a bunch of cases of beer and hand out some $$$$ to the guys that are actually doing the work and say, "how about you guys use this wire for me instead, and lets just keep this between us..... :)"
The Install guys won't give a cr@p, they will be happy to do something for a guy that actually cares about them instead of them getting cut out of the deal.... I promise you, you'll get what you want and so will they.
Screw the builder.... They are just trying to gouge you...
16ga vs 12ga is a minor amount of size upgrade, it will fit.... You have no idea what I have put through 1 1/2 conduit...

Go with the 16ga wire then after they leave, tie it to your 12ga and yank it through.

Yes, but you go should listen Studio vs. Monitor on your own it may not be worth it to you. Studio 100 L,R and CC690. more powerful amp cant hurt.
Depending on your budget, my reccomendation would be your center channel first. Then your sub. (at least a 390 if not 690 and also to the PW series subs)
I am not sure that you will appreciate the studios without much desire to listen to music. However, you would be amazed with the sub and center upgrade. I believe you will be happy with the amp with the right speaker choices. I personally would upgrade the surrounds as well.

Ask what labor is if you supply the wire and go to monoprice and get something worth your time. Remember everything is negotiable. Would ask for at least 2" conduit if you wish to runs some hdmi or components in multiples through it.

Thanks yes I thought that too since most of the dialogue in movies comes from the center. So I was going to uograde to a cc-590, but the salesman said the 190 was a better match with the monitor 7's than a 590 would be and cautioned me that when the dialogue moves from the center to the L/R it wouldn't match.
So I was did some A/B testing at the store with the monitor 7's and the cc190 and then switched back and forth with the studio 40's and the cc570/90 and the studio series sounded so much better. So I bought the 40's and a cc570. The 570 was on sale for half the price of the 590 so I jumped on it. I already like the crisp clarity compared to the monitors.
As for upgrading the sub/amp/surrounds - I may, but on those I'd like to wait on how it sounds in the actual theater room when it's complete in probably like three weeks.
Thanks everyone for the help - the studios are great :)
