darrellt 10-25-05, 09:34 PM Hi,
I'm a 65 year old retired silicon valley veteran. Well, partially retired since I'm now sitting on the Pacfic Fishery Management Council. Anyway, I am a former Chief Technology Officer of an internet company and prior to that of a software company.
I currently have a 45" Sharp LCD and am very happy with it, but I really miss the size of my old 65" RPTV. There just might be a 65" plasma or LCD in my near future, but it is going to have to be 1080P or I'm not buying.

- Got interested a few years ago (i guess it was more like 10), when I saw one of the first plasma screens. Waited a few years before buying to let the color representation get a bit better. And much to my wifes dismay, am constantly tweaking with other technological components in the house.

FiberGuy 10-29-05, 10:33 PM 48 years old, male, network and web architect for a major telecommunications company. Just purchased Pio 1130 to replace a Pio 990 RPTV.
35 years old, male, currently employed as a civil/environmental engineer (cleaning up other people's messes) in Montana. Married 7 years, no kids (yet), 2 cats, 6 bicycles (3 1/2 are hers), 5 pairs of telemark skis (3 are hers)... I guess we could be best described as fun hogs. No flat screen yet, but hoping to pull the trigger on a Panny 42 or 50HD8UK for Christmas depending on spousal approval. You do notice she has more toys than I do? Hmm...
comxpert 10-30-05, 01:33 AM Wow, 265 posts is not a short list... I notice that there are more Pany plasma owners here. I will be 33 this Halloween! married with two kids, 28 mo boy and 14 mo boy... I never owned an HDTV before but am on the watch of getting plasma or LCD in a year or so. I am eyeing the new Sony 40xbr1 LCD but it's not available at Costco. I want to buy from Costco only... I prefer plasma/LCD without side speakers but I can rearrange room if I have to get one with side speakers... Now I think I should get a 50" based on most people's path... So far I am also impressed with the price/performance ratio of the 50" Vizio at Costco. No built-in turner though...
Female 45 happily married with two boys one in the Navy, and two girl’s one of which is a Maltese and one a rescue retriever.
Occupation is a fitness consultant working on two certifications Pilates and functional/integrated movements. Hobbies include painting, biking and in-line skating (before knee started acting up), home decorating, hiking and drinking a good cabernet.
I am still learning about electronics, it’s my job because my husband knows nothing.
Last years big purchase was a Sony 60” HD LCD, Aperion sub and center and a Yamaha receiver. Actually now that I’m writing it all down I could go on and on, I guess I have bought quite a lot of electronics, the latest being a 26” HP pavilion LC2600N. At the moment, I am researching ceiling back speakers due to room configuration problems.
I am having a problem with sales people passing me up in the store and heading straight to my husband who only cares if the product is the cheapest and asks no technical questions. I think I will have to start some Krav Maga training to deal with these annoying men.
spanky67 11-01-05, 05:18 PM 38, married, 2 kids (3 & 5), just lost my 10 yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback in August. I own several insurance agencies. One feeding B&G speakers in the family rm and one feeding Truaudio's in the library. Thank god for universal remotes.

21 years old, will be married in 8 months, male. Working for my family since I was a little boy in a Chinese restaurant business. I'm currently in the managing position of the restaurant and also going to the community college nearby. My major is cardiology and will be transfer to University Nevada of Las Vegas next year just little after I get married. My soon to be wife is in the nursing major, and also will be going to UNLV with me. I have just jumped into this High Definition world, and am a newbie still. I recently purchased a 37" Westinghouse LVM-37w1 as well as the pre-order of the XBOX 360. I have hooked it up to my main-use computer and the picture is amazing. I had to say that. My future plans for home AV are as follow:
1. Get a home theater system, which includes Up-Scaling DVD player that is <$1000 (Currently looking at a Samsung, or a Sony model, any suggestions?)
2. Purchase a Blue-Ray and a HD-DVD writter drives for my computer.
3. Sony PlayStation 3 -> My girl friend agreed with me. (SO HARD!!)
4. Upgrade to a larger 1080P LCD TV in 2007 when I'm married. :D ( She also agreed.)
41, married, two daughters (15 & 17). I'm a software architect at Microsoft. I own a Panasonic 50PHD7UY that I picked up last Nov. (Prices have dropped over 30% since then!) My daughter is watching My Fair Lady on it at the moment--beautiful. I'm running an SDI-modded Panasonic RP-91 into an iScan HD+ and then into an HDMI card on the display.
Dave said they do this once a year and started in July. By the time we're done he can just reuse this thread for next year!
55, work for DOE research laboratory, electrical engineer for safety systems. Should receive my 50HD8UK from VA in the next two weeks.
Pacificamodern 11-23-05, 01:34 PM HI all,
I am a 44 year old who has been lurking on these forums, learning as much as I can for months. Naturally, I have been drooling over the Plasma stuff, and finally my wife gave the go ahead to upgrade from our current 36" Sony XBR tube to the 50PHD8UK! In fact, I am sitting here at work, rather impatiently waiting for my 1:00pm-4:00pm delivery window TODAY! My wife just accepted delivery of our new TW SA8300 HD DVR box this morning, and needless to say I am basically going nuts here! Oh yeah, no kids, I race sailboats, play golf and like modern architecture. I develop and operate golf courses for a living, and now I can call my golf addiction business! (my wife hates that!)
Arggh! I can't take any more waiting!
Regards,
Marty
JILLZLAVE 11-23-05, 02:04 PM 37 YR Old lurker painfully torn between taking the 50" some kind of Panny plunge or DIYing a screen and going projector.
Work in the steadily crumbling American auto industry south of Chicago in the QC dept.
Married with 2 kids G&B, so my purchases are monitored and scurtinized heavily. Due to an incident with tree removal and my cedar fence my wife assures me the Panny and all non-DIY options would be best.
I have told many folks how much this place helps out. Even when I find the vastness of information at times quite daunting, many are able to condense and simplify things in order for me to find my way through.

I'm planning to get the Athena Micra 6 speakers, Mirage Omni S10 Sub, Panasonic SA-XR55K receiver, Sceptre X37SV-Naga LCD TV, and the Logitech Harmony 659 remote for my room. I plan to wreck some havoc in my house with my first setup. I might be the youngest guy in here. woo woo.

24. Male. Single. I work for a giant cable company (Rogers, for all you canadians) doing network monitoring/troubleshooting (yes, I get paid to watch tv...) and sometimes running the Sports packages (NFL Sunday Ticket, NHL Centre Ice, etc...).
This madness all started 8 years ago when I went to a pawn shop and picked up a crappy old two channel system. Thousands of dollars and 4 complete systems later.....
I wonder.... If I had never found AVS, would I have been content watching fullscreen VHS movies on my $50 Digimate SDTV?

I am the Director of Operations at a printing company in Ohio.
I have a DLP projector in my basement theater and am shopping for a plasma for the upstairs living room where we do most of our everyday viewing.

I'm 40 but think and act as though I'm still 25; happily married; have a 16-month old son; am a Sr Mgr (Datacenter Ops) for the bestest internet company on the planet earth; and have sick and very expensive interests in a/v, gadgets, cars and 4x4s, photography, and mountainbiking (Canondale rocks!). ;)
I own plasmas from Sony (HD) and Zenith (SD); most recently acquired the Pio Elite Pro-1130; and spend way too much time at HT/Audio dealers. :D

I'm 43 but heading rapidly for 44. Married, no kids but we do have the best (small) dog in the world.
I have BS/MS in BioMedical Engineering. MS thesis was in the field of binaural psycho-acoustics. Yes - that in part means our perception of stereo sound. I spent 12+ years designing/building medical electronics, including patient monitoring and drug delivery systems. Six years ago I was lured by a friend and former boss into a s/w company. I am currently project manager for math/science toolkits for one of our products. The company produces an image processing library, as well as a visual programming environment targeted at algorithm development and scientific exploration. Fun stuff! There are actually divisions of Sony and Panasonic that are using our tools in some of the their HDTV development. No freebies unfortunately! :(
I've always been interested in photography and audio. Three years ago I got hooked on HDTV, but I don't think I go too far overboard. At least, my wife has agreed to all the pruchases so far, which include:
Family Room:
Denon 1801 Receiver
B&W 601 fronts, center & sub, (crap, I can't remember the models or the surrounds now)
Sony 50" GWIII
Sony 5-disc DVD changer
Sharp SVHS VCR
Then I upgraded the 1801 to a 2803, eventually moving the 1801 to the bedroom. Of course, I had to get speakers for the bedroom - B&W CM4. Nice. There's also a JVC SVHS/DVD combo unit. That was followed recently by a Toshiba 42HP95 for the bedroom as well.
I'm also into softball, cycling, formerly karate, skiing and volleyball. Now I mostly cut the grass or shovel snow, and have started playing golf. But I don't take it seriously. Yet.
hazexban 12-30-05, 12:56 PM Hmmm well I am going to be 25 on the 14th of January.

Anyways, 27 from Bay Area, CA here. I just bought my first home (took quite a bit of effort with all the crazy prices around here) and looking to get my first 50in PDP. I have a wonderful GF, no kids, no pets and hoping to tie the knot sometime in the near future!
I work in the NOC (network operations) for Cisco Systems (at work right now actually on New Year's). Been in IT for about 6 years now and love it. Hoping to start a side job/gig or own a business one day soon as my appetite for toys (electronics and cars) are a bit heavy on my little wallet. :)

Sharon L 01-01-06, 10:25 AM 44, single, mother of a 1 year old Siberian Husky. I am a Software Engineering Manager for a local defense contractor. I got into Home Theater over 8 years ago when I was told I could no longer Scuba Dive, so I needed to spend my money on something else that would make me happy. I have survived two bouts of a rare chronic Leukemia which nearly took one of my legs during the first bout. I am currently in partial remission so some day it will probably be back but I do not let that bother me. But when I am again laid up for a few months beating my disease, I will have a great HDTV Home Theater to lay in front off.
I have a 50" Pioneer plasma hooked up to a Lexicon MC12 sound system in my living room and have just brought a 42" Toshiba HPX Plasma for my bedroom. My friends tease me that my systems probably cost more than my townhouse, but they will all be here tomorrow to watch the Rose Parade in HD.

GautLSU 01-02-06, 01:07 AM I am 23 years old (until next wednesday), single and living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Working as a Civil/Structural engineer for a large consulting firm. In the span of a year, I graduated college, got two jobs (the new job is a keeper!), bought a house, sweated through 2 hurricanes and unexpected roommates.... and of course I pulled the trigger on my new plasma, a Toshiba 50HPX95. Love it, that thing is a beast.
Nothing like watching football in HD. Speaking of which, who else caught that Peach Bowl the other night? Got to see my Tigers put an absolute shalacking on the Hurricanes... which in itself is a bit ironic :D

PPBknight 01-02-06, 04:37 AM I'm 39, live in beautiful Portland, OR, married with 1 very active 3 year old (don't know what I was thinking, bought all my hi-end home theater stuff (minus the PDP) right before daughter was born and barely got to use it for awhile). 15 years in law enforcement, now a police detective for a major metropolitan police department in NW Oregon. Work Homicide/Assault/Missing Persons and desperately needed my new Panansonic 50" (500U) to unwind after very long days...ahhh.

Now I hope I can participate to share some of my experiences and give back some. I also plan on learning a thing or two more, too! :) Thanks and glad to finally be here (officially).

Many of my components are generous gifts from him. I recently moved into an apartment in Center City Philadelphia and found the bass from adjacent buildings intimidating with only my 25" RCA CRT. I figured the only solution was to drown it out with my own system :D.

Jason Priestley 01-23-06, 11:24 PM I'm 26 and engaged to be married this July. Plan on going to Bora Bora for the honeymoon.
I work as an equity research analyst at one of the tier 1 financial institutions. Hours are pretty horrible by most people's standards. On an average day I work at least 12 hours, although on earnings nights I sometimes work about 16-18 hours. By the way, add 3 hours of total commuting to to that. However, it has started to pay off. While I'm by no means rich, and I make much less than my director, I'm pretty happy that I'm making 6 figures at my age.
Its this extra cash that has brought me to the forums. I currently only have a Sharp Aquos 32D6U. Quite happy with it. However, now I'm looking to get surround sound. Currently toying around with a 5.1 system from Aperion or perhaps Paradigm (minimons or monitor 3 bookshelves). Also, the future wifey wants a new TV, because ours isn't big enough for the living room. So now I'm looking for a plasma or LCD. Although I lean towards the panny's, I want 1080P...and i don't know when they come out...we'll have to wait an see.
29 y/o Dentist in Boston. Currently have a 50 in Maxent x3, looking into the 65 plasma market. WOuld love to get the 102in plasma when it comes out, I better start doin some more fillings! :).....

Still shopping for t.v.
Somewhere between 30 and 50 (hey don't blame me; blame the casting directors; if I tell, I lose work.)
I'm an actor.
Not married, no children - but a roommate and a cat.
My friends make fun of how long I draw out my consumer decisions (though they all ask me for advice). AVS has helped me bring my indecision to a whole new level. But I'm having fun and learning a lot at the same time.
A 50" plasma is definitely in my future (current front runners - Pioneer, NEC)
tws1972 01-24-06, 09:31 PM I'm 33 years old and live in Los Angeles! LA is actually not a bad town...just very expensive. I still love it! But maybe I'm biased, I've been here my whole life.
Anyway, I graduated from the University of Southern California (we should have won that Rose Bowl game - GO TROJANS!!!) and I am a Career Advisor at another local College. I am single (and loving it!) and I think I need help, I am gadget freak!!! My friends also make fun of me because I am always taking months to research an electronic consumer decision. But hey, in the end I feel like I made a wise purchase!
I have a 42" Panasonic 6UY EDTV connected to a DirecTV HD Tivo receiver (simply breathtaking) and I am currently about to pull the trigger on a 26" LCD monitor/tv for my bedroom which I will also connect to an HD receiver! I can't get enough of these things! I just can't decide if I want the Syntax 26" LCD or the Magnavox 26" LCD. Decisions, decisions...
Over and out...
tomntempe 01-31-06, 12:39 AM Hi, New user, 57 married civil engineer in Phoenix, AZ. Just about ready to replace my 10 year old 32" RCA fuzzy with a 42" LCD as soon as my local warehouse store has the one I want avaialble. I'm surprised to see so many people in this thread in their 50's, I thought it would skew much younger. Was going to get 37" but when I kept looking in the store and comparing the 37 to the 42 I kept thinking the 37 looks like a TV experiance but with the 42 I started to feel "immersed" in the picture. It the biggest that will fit in my entertainment center and Ill have to redo the doors to get it in.
kittler 02-06-06, 12:24 PM I'm 35, married with two boys (8mo and a 3yr old). I'm an infrared thermographer, I basically perform thermal imaging with a $50,000 FLIR camera, with a Fortune 500 company. I recently upgraded my audio components to a Pioneer 1015sx Receiver and Infinity Speakers. I will be "pulling the trigger" on a 50" Plasma by next month.
I just turned 30 a few months ago (I am one of the "old" guys now I guess! :p ). Software engineer for a small company making medical image archives. Wife and no kids yet so I can blow my money on toys like my new NEC 42XR4 until that happens. Maybe I can sneak a new motorcycle in before then...

Own my own small business based locally (only 4 employees including me), NoLimits Computing. Recently expanded onto ebay. Currently paying for a new Flash layout to our listings and a new logo. Geez, graphic design is expensive. We do everything related from computers; sell 3 lines, virus repair, OS install, upgrades, network consulting. Made a decent amount of cash in the stock market off of Nvidia a while ago (knew they had a killer year, dumped several grand into them a few days before earnings reports. Bought around $21.70ish sold for near $30 a couple days later).
I've been into high end computers and audio forever, now building my own theatre in our basement. This is just my bedroom rig, all paid for with my OWN money, which I am very proud of because I live in a rich town where kids parents buy them BMW after BMW or flat screen TV's for free....

tjobben 02-23-06, 02:12 PM Hallo!
33 year old. First of all I'm a father, 2 boys and a girl. Second, I'm the husband to my lovely wife. Third, I'm a scientist working with genetic epidemiology at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
Soon I'll quit being a scientist, and start as an actuary at If. Looking forward to it, making more money so I can buy a nice display. My old Samsung 29" crt is slowly dying in me, strange noises, flickering, and sometimes shutting itself down.
I'm a newbie here at avs, just started to work on a htpc project (thank you mastiff for the excellent tutorial), and thank you all for this excellent forum!
Skål!
Marky_Mark896 02-23-06, 02:56 PM hey tjobben, welcome to avs! Sorry to hear about your impending addiction. Good luck, and have fun with your display shopping.

scottd327 02-24-06, 09:38 AM 41 and a mortgage banking lawyer in Chocolate Town, USA (Hershey, PA). Just got married 2 months ago (she agreed with full knowledge of my AV habit). I now have a wonderful 7-year old stepdaughter, a 9-year old dog and a 3-year old guinea pig (the pets are a little less wonderful).
Have an 8-seat dedicated HT in my basement with a Panasonic AE700u LCD projector and a 106" Elite screen. 7 Mirage High Definition Theatre speakers are in a THX Ultra2 setup with an Earthquake sub. Although I have gone the separates route several times before, I currently have a Denon AVR-4806 and a Pio Elite 59avi DVD player.
The state of high-end receivers is becoming so close to separates, performance wise, that it is hard to choose against their convenience, not to mention the lack of ground loop problems and the incredibly low noise floor ( I am so tired of so-called high-end outboard amps that hiss and buzz through quiet passages!).

Have Rotel separates driving B&W speakers (Nautilus 805's in front, LCR60S3 center, 600S3 in the back). Always loved B&W speakers. Recently picked up a used Denon 2900, very happy with it. 28, own an IT company in Edmond, OK. Married, no kids, unless the 2 labs count. Just received my Vizio P50 Saturday. Nothing special on the audio side, Yamaha VXsomething 6.1 receiver, Klipsch f/r centers, Klipsch subs. Probably gonna continue the Klipsch theme.
I'm a 54 yr old Project Mgmt consultant living in Albany, NY with my lovely wife and 2 small kids(second family). I'm presently waiting for a 37" Westy monitor to arrive. Electronics, computer and audio have been passions since college. Just finished putting together an HTPC and getting a taste of XP-MCE.

Brosef22 06-12-06, 11:03 PM Hey all,
26, married to a beautiful woman, two boys 3 and 1. I'm a Staff Seargent in the USAF and have been flying around the world for the past 8 years as a flying crew chief on the KC-135R. Currently I am taking a few month hiatus from the middle east to spend some time with my family. I did just purchase a 37" LG and it's sweet. Along with my service, I attend Embry-Riddle Aeronuatical University. BS in Professional Aeronautics w/ dbl. minors in Aviation Safety and Management. Less than one year to go! If you know me or have read my threads/posts i'm a natural smartass, and I've probably offended people but they'll live. Great thread! AVS Forum is really informational and i've been learning alot. You guys rule!!!!
JunkyardDogg 06-12-06, 11:19 PM After reading a couple posts, I decided I should post something.
I am 19 and currently pursuing a BS in electrical engineering. I am paying my way through the University of Cincinnati on real estate investments I bought two years ago. I currently have a 42" Pioneer and love it! Parents don't have a plasma, but a big Mits RPTV.
timify10 06-12-06, 11:24 PM I am 39...look 29. :) Rochester, ny I am a design engineer...mostly for aerospace and automotive. We design and manufacture high precision tooling for gear manufacturers.
I've been lurking this forum for about 9 months. I designed and built my own home theater room over the last half year. It's 14' x 10" with nearly everything plus some more. I have an Onkyo receiver, Polk tower speakers and rear surrounds in the wall. I also have the huge Polk cs400 Center channel speaker and a Paradigm sub. To finish my room, I was going to buy the Sony 50 SXRD but I decided to wait for the new KDS-55a2000 model due out in a few weeks. I was weary of the problems people were having with green blobs. Just a little while to go and my room will be complete....muhahahaa.
We do this about once a year or so since we get so many new members.
I am 50 years old, married- I think you can figure out my wifes name (hint- cheridave), two kids- one who just received her Bachelors Degree from Humboldt College and one in the Marines (just got back from Iraq). I am a Civil Servant for the Department of Defense- Procurement/Acquisition, which will include anything from a can of Soup to Major Weapons Systems for our Men and Women in the Armed Forces- God Bless Them and Keep them Safe.
I was bitten by the Plasma and Home Theater bug about Five years ago and I will never turn back. I've had the 42" & 50" Panasonic and the 50" Pioneer. I am currently researching the new model Plasmas and will be upgrading sometime this year.
I want to personally thank all of you for the many tips, advice and knowledge that I have had the pleasure of reading here on this forum.
Keep up the good work and "Happy Plasma-ing".

billybob_jcv 06-12-06, 11:57 PM 4 kids and I'm 36 - no wait, I mean I have 4 TVs including a 36" - actually, I'm 60 and I have 5.1 kids - no wait, that's not right either - I mean I *want* a 60" plasma to go with my 5.1 sound system in the living room. Uhhh, I know I have 2 of something..... oh yeah, now I remember - in addition to the 2 directivo dvrs, I have 2 directv receivers in those other rooms I think I have in this house. Well, someone is watching all those TVs 'cause they always seem to be on - and I'm fairly sure I'm still getting paid for that stuff I do all day, 'cause they haven't shut off the power or the directv service...

Hello, my nickname is falser. And I'm a techoholic. I started dabbling when was 13. Like most people, it started as a casual thing, listening to music on headphones, trading CD's with my friends. Then I got my very own stereo. And then after college and when I got a job and had access to disposable income I found myself getting into the harder stuff. First it was a 5.1 system and DVD player. Then it got taken apart, rebuilt, and upgraded piece by piece until I had a full blown mid-to-high end system with processor/amp separates, a 2TB movie & music server, home grown DVR, CRT rear projection -- we're talking total hardcore addict here.
I'll be getting a 46"-ish 1080p LCD by about August or September if I can go that long. And then that's it. I'll be entering rehab after that. I promise.

Relocated my family from NY to Tampa last year, made a killing selling my house. Best decision I had ever done. Paid off all our debts and bought a newly constructed house with a nice bonus/media room upstairs which we had finally moved in a couple of weeks ago.
First tv I got was a Toshiba 52HMX94 DLP, then went on a plasma binge 3 months ago getting a Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK for the media room and a Panasonic TH-37PHD8UK for the master's bedroom all from Costco.
Life's been good!!! :)

Sadly enough in this house I don't think I'll be investing in any TV worth mentioning here, this house is on the wrong side of the tracks if you know what I mean. :)
I work for a product demo company that goes to various retail stores to train the salespeople, and to help with sales and demos. The manufacturers who hire us vary from time to time. I like it a lot, it's sales without all the pressures of commission or the hassles of a nagging boss. Because of my previous background with consumer electronics sales, I tend to take the demos of any HT products.

I've loved electronics for as long as I can remember. Probably runs in my genes as my father was a EE major who works in the telecom industry. In fact, I can probably trace my love of audio/video to my father who let me use his '70's vintage Pioneer receiver, amplifier and full-logic cassette deck when he finally bought more modern pieces in the early 90's.

This guy from page 2, daveok, sounds like he's right up your alley:
73rd birthday next week.
Retired from telco equip mfg company after 35 yrs in HR field.
Same wife after 40+ years. Two sons (both dentists) and I dropped my dental insurance a few years ago. Four grandchildren which are my current pastimes.
Got interested in upgrading my tv a couple of years ago and considered DLP technology before joining the AVS family. After uncountable hours researching the different groups of the forum, decided on the Panasonic TH-50PX25 last year. Not considering upgrading----yet
There's also begwer from page 4:
I just turned 70, a Harvard-educated journalist and editor for many, many years, who got into electronics through my older son's interests. Our first purchase was the early Sinclair computer, which had about 16K memory. I was one of the first journalists to have a modem, I think it was a 300 baud in stalled in the old Apple IIE. My wife and I live in the Bronx, in a section called Riverdale, and one son lives in Seattle with his wife and 18-month old twins, where he is in the video games business. My younger son and his wife live in NYC and is a DJ on the side. Recently, I bought the PIo 4350 and am having a great time playing with it.
There are a few sixty-somethings around but that's still young in this and age (IMHO). Anyway, as a representative of retirement-age folks that like A/V stuff there's darrellt and snidely from page 9:
Hi,
I'm a 65 year old retired silicon valley veteran.
66 y.o. male. Seems i'm the 2nd oldest here - but only read about half the pages.
Have had plasma 42" Panny for 4 years - long before they were carried in std. stores. Ordered mine thru an AVS sponsor after picking up info here. Just updated to a 50" Panny about 6 mo. ago.
Orkedian from page 10:
69 year old retired hotelier moon lighting as an electronics customer serve rep. Married 44 years, one daughter, two grandsons. Ready to spring for a new HD flatpanel to marry with my Media Center PC and other toys.
rachelsdad from page 11:
Kocheez 75; the UofP is where I got my bachelors in nursing. Good school.
And, if he's to be believed, the likely winner of oldest kid that likes his electronics toys at the AVS forum, dirtydan from page 13:
I'm older then dirt, retired from Law Enforcement, have a wife, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. I do as little as necessary, just enjoy life, what's left of it anywho.
Thanks guys, you give us hope that we might actually remain enthusiastic about A/V when we (the less-than-50 crowd) reach your age and get to experience the 5,000 X 2,000 resolutions that will eventually make 1080p broadcast resolutions look like B&W TV. And somehow I believe Bob Barker will still be hosting The Price Is Right when that time comes. Cheers! ;)
I resemble that remark! ;)

schroedk 06-28-06, 10:31 AM Hi! I'm always happy to introduce myself. I'm 33, and I have a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy. However, right now I get to stay home with my two daughters, ages 2 1/2 and 6 months, which, I admit, is unusual for a guy. My specialty is pediatrics, so it wasn't too drastic of a move for me. I'm working 1 day a week at a nearby hospital, mostly to keep up my skills and have at least one day of adult conversation (plus, I get to brag about my girls). My wife is a Family Practice physician who used to own her practice (I did the financial stuff for her), but we were basically forced to sell since Illinois doesn't like to pay their medical bills. She has since joined a larger physician group working at their clinic 15 miles away, so thankfully we didn't have to move. Obviously, she's the one that's funding my CE upgrades (and I'm a techno-junkie, so I'm glad she's tolerant of this). I upgraded my TV a year ago to a Toshiba 52hm84 DLP, and this year I upgraded my receiver and speakers from a Yamaha RX-V630 with 10 year old JBL speakers to an Onkyo TX-SR703 and Definitive Technology BP10b fronts, CLR 2300 center, BPX surrounds, and a SuperCube II. Since we're both pretty happy with DVDs upconverted on my Panasonic S-97s, I had to promise to wait for high-def DVDs. That might be next year's upgrade.

Have been lurking here for about 1 year. This is the BEST place for information on the net. Wish I would have known about it before I bought my first HD set, a Sony 26 inch lcd. Currently desperately waiting for my TH-58PX60U to arrive.
Clienthes 11-16-06, 12:41 PM I'm 30, about to be divorced. I'm a Korean linguist in the Air Force, currently living in Korea.
I'm itching to buy a big 1080p LCD, but I can't get anything here except the Korean versions of the Samsungs sold in the States; they're exactly the same, only about twice as expensive :/ So I'll likely get a Mits RPTV on base. Sort of a consolation prize for my impending divorce :(
If I ever get back to the states (I'll proabably be here in Korea for 4-6 years), I'm buying a house with an unfinished basement for HT construction. Until then, I'll be here on AVS, learning all I can!
ClarkeBar 11-16-06, 12:58 PM 53, a practicing Astrologer for 30 years also married 30 years this December with no children.
Bought the Zenith Z42 EDTV in July '05 (now at 5964 hrs.) and plan to upgrade to 50" or larger HD in the future. Looking at the Pio 5070 and the Panny 600U...but really prefer to wait until 1080P is much more available and cheaper in Plasma. Perhaps SED? Would consider an LCD (shudder ;) ) after seeing the latest offerings from Sammy, JVC, even Sony, etc.
Finally have self-calibrated the Zenith to the point where I am so satisfied there will be no more tweaking, just routine checks. Highly recommend either pro or self calibration (study up) to maximize panel ownership satisfaction. Makes it much easier to wait for better things down the road. Only reason I would really want to upgrade now is larger size and 1080P.
Enjoy!
GoodGuy 11-16-06, 01:07 PM 72- wife and I raising 2 grandchildren full-time. Retired stockbroker. By necessity we are early adopters. You have no idea what a 2 month delay in Toshiba gen2 HD DVD makes in our lives! Hope we make it to SED. Can you imagine what news will be on this forum 30-40 years from now?!
Have fun!

MJ DOOM 11-16-06, 01:11 PM 21, Cable Installer for Comcast in Chicago. No kids just living the simple life. Still living at home with moms, tried to get a condo this past summer/fall but the real estate business is a dirty game. hopefully next year. just stacking right now
Still on the fence about getting a hdtv. I really want a 50 inch 1080p plasma. right now i gaming with the 360 (13 games only beat one) on a sony gdm fw900 24inch crt monitor. i know i gotta spend at least 2.5k to match the picture quality, only spent $380 for the monitor. also got the hd dvd add-on (pq is just dumb nice), and for that late night gaming/movie watching i got them Pioneer se-dir800c wireless surround sound headphones.
Quadzilla 11-16-06, 01:16 PM 42 years old living in Greenwich, CT area. I'm on disability due to paralysis caused by a motorcycle accident back in '81. No HDTV currently but I'm reading posts and reviews on this forum to help make a choice, may go w/the Westinghouse 32W1.
Glad I found these forums, many friendly and very helpful people, thanks!

Currently working part-time as a Technician for a small USB flash drives company. This is where I blow most of my money on luxury electronics.... I suffer from a form of illness where I have a urge and desire to save up huge lump sums of money from work and blow it all on expensive "toys". I say "toys" because, thats what I think they are imho.
My areas of expertise is microcontroller hardware/software codesign and robotic control. I intend to return to school for a Masters degree after 3-4 yrs after I graduate. From there, I do wish to obtain a Ph.D but thats a longshot.
i'm trying to buy a Samsung 46" 1080p LCD just in time for my bday but the order went out of stock. Now i have to wait for the cc to clear again before i can re-order.
I love this site because it is very informative.
36 year old Canadian accountant living and working in the Cayman Islands the past 6 years. Still enjoying it. Pretty much into anything electronic.
Recently added the Pioneer Elite Pro 1140-HD and the 84-TXSi - enjoying both with my Paradigm speakers. Looking to add a PS3 in a few months - once the supply issues sort themselves out - might look at an LCD for gaming.
I really have gotten a LOT of info out of this site and am really happy to see it maintains its civility even though Pioneer plasmas are better than Panasonic ;)
cheridave 11-16-06, 07:51 PM WOW! What a diverse group:)

8IronBob 11-17-06, 01:09 AM 26 years old, living with my family (mother and father) here in the suburbs of Cleveland, OH. I work at KeyCorp on night shift doing check processing. I happen to be a big enthusiast in home theater and entertainment centers.
Currently I have a JVC 32" LT-32X667 LCD, an X360, Samsung R135 Upconversion DVD Player/Recorder, Scientific Atlanta HD/DVR STB, Yamaha YHT-270, and my Dell notebook (not affected by the battery thingy, thank goodness).
My former configuration of my home theater was a Westinghouse 32" LTV-32w1, a Philips DVD Home Theater system, original Xbox, a smaller Scientific Atlanta HD STB, Gateway 554GE (heavily modified, of course), Insignia DVD Recorder/VHS, and a Nintendo GameCube.
Even before that I had a JVC CRT 27", I forget the model of it now, it was black, had speakers on the bottom, and had all sorts of bells and whistles. Nice to have a JVC back in the form of an LCD flat panel, tho.
Other than that, I'm anticipating on upgrading my GameCube to a Wii (lucky to do that before next year, the way the demand's going to be).

55, married for 31 years (!), no kids. IBM IT Specialst (used to be a Systems Engineer, til the REAL engineers made IBM change the title). Scuba dive, travel, work too hard... Have Bang and Olufsen stuff, except for a 55" Fujitsu plasma which we bought about in 2004 (couldn't do a 60, but wanted bigger than 50). Been on this forum for what seems like a LONG time. Read it for years before finally making the plasma jump. Still find it hugely useful.

Frost147 01-06-07, 09:17 PM SashaSolitaire - you a Mini Man?!?
Hell, back when you weren't even a glint in your Daddy's eye, I bought my first car - a 1963 Austin Mini 850cc. Red with a white roof, horizontal sliding side windows, a single instrument "pod" on the dash and a 2 foot long gear shift lever.
850cc of pavement poundin', tire screamin', liver quiverin', scrotum shrivelin', sphincter puckerin' pleasure!
Starting regimen kept all my high school friends in stitches:
1) Open the hood and tickle the idle screw
2) Get back in the car and wrestle with the parking brake
3) Turn the ignition switch to "On"
4) Yell out "Batteries to Power,,,,Turbines to Speed!" **
5) Send a slient prayer to Saint Christopher and,,,,
6) Depress the big, red "Holy F**K" button located right behind the shift lever.
** With apologies to the original Batman TV show,,,,,,
Yep, loved that car so much I bought 2 more exactly the same (plus, the price was right - never paid more than a couple of hundred$$ for any of them).
Being a glutten for punishment can only go so far and in the summer of 1972 I made the step up to it's big brother; an Austin 1100cc. That one had 4 doors, properly operating side windows and with a good headwind, could eventually get all the way to 90 mph.
Thanks for re-igniting those memories, man:) :) :)

Got into this stuff 7 years ago when I bought my first 36 inch CRT with JBL 5.1 and a Yammy receiver at Best Buy on one of their infamous 18 month free financing programs since I was a poor grad student!
Currently have a 50 inch Panny 6UY (commercial) plasma in our great room with 7 Paradigm in-walls and a Hsu subwoofer rockin'. Several in-ceiling speakers scattered throughout the house and a pair of Polks on the back deck. All of that is powered by a Yammy receiver and several Jamo amps.
Just bought a JVC 61 inch LCoS for our MBR where my JBL gear currently resides. Also just bought a LCD screen for my wife in our bathroom since every morning we're forced to endure the Wiggles on the JVC and we'd like to know the news/weather :)
That 36 inch Toshiba CRT that friends ooohed and aaaahed over just a few years ago....my daughter has that in her playroom.....kid has no idea how lucky she has it.....I still have my 13 inch Sharp tv that my parents bought me in middle school (I was sooo cool to have a tv in my room then!!) in my garage-my only "real" sanctuary :)
