Sent you a PM, would be curious how you got Sony to agree to replace your model. Mine is a 2005, I get the colored vertical line issue. Wonder if I'd have the same luck.

What "lower end" models did they offer you? I accepted an offer for a 46" NX810 to replace my failing 50" A10. They even credited me for the bulb I bought back in November.

Yeah, I'm all sorts of curious about your post.

1. I've got the blue blob, as you call it, but no lines. I never heard of the optical block problem. So it's no repairable? Is that why Sony is offering you replacements?

2. How, specifically, did you contact Sony. I am interested in recouping ANY value I can out of this set if offered. We bought it at Costco in 05 with the understanding that we could return it at ANYTIME. Now it looks like that might have changed. Costco does not have any sets I am interested in either but I figure I would take the most expensive or marketable set I could get, if not money, and just sell that one to fund a new one somewhere else.

3. As Scott P asked, what sets are they offering you?

This is what you need to do:

If you wish to discuss available options, please e-mail sonylistens@am.sony.com Please include your model/serial #, phone number and mention the problem you are having.

They will call you or email you back with in 1-2 business days with an offer for replacement set and Event ID#. After you get an offer you have 1 week to decided what you would like to do. After you decided you call back and give them your Event ID# and tell them what offer you want. They will ask for a CC # and tell you your next steps. You will need to take pictures of the problem and remove the serial sticker from the back of the set. You will ship the photos ad sticker to them for approval. After its approved your CC will be charged (depending on your deal) and the tv shipped to you.

Just follow all the steps they give you in the correct order.:) Save all emails and documents.

I know TVs don't fall under Costco's return policy anymore, but pretty sure they did in 05, and it should be grandfathered in. Almost positive I read products bought before the change would be honored on the old policy.

Thank you TDCJPPD for drawing my attention to this. I emailed sonylistens@am.sony.com my problem in detail. They called me back the next day (beware it's an 'unlisted' number so make sure you answer).

Once they confirmed my set model and problem, they gave me an offer of 3 television sets to choose from:

KDL55NX810 $760.00 + local sales tax
KDL46NX810 $510.00 + local sales tax
KDL40EX500 No Charge

My model was the KDF-E60A20 for reference.

You must have an optical block problem, other problems won't be offered this deal. I bought my TV 10/05 so they are really on the ball for covering an issue on an older TV. I chose the 55" because it's 3D and got nice reviews at cnet.

I had to take a picture of the problem, with a taped piece of paper with my case number clearly marked on the front. I also had to cut out the serial sticker on the back, tape it to another paper with the case number on it and serial / model #.

I sent it 2 day air, and the day it arrived to Sony in Florida I got this email:

Thank you. We have received your required documentation and will process the order for your replacement unit. When your replacement unit has shipped, you will receive another email update.

It will take approximately 3 weeks for delivery. The shipper will contact you once your television has arrived in your area to schedule a delivery time and day that's convenient for you.

Not bad at all Sony, thank you.

To update, I received this email today. I decided to stick to the original and wait until May.

Thank you for contacting Sony regarding your television. Unfortunately the model that you selected, KDL55NX810, has been delayed in shipping. We apologize for this situation and would like to offer you the following options (subject to availability):

Model KDL55HX800. This model would cost $80 less than the KDL55NX810.

You can wait for the KDL55NX810 if you would prefer. We are expecting to start shipping these again in early May.

Well, you were right! They honored it. Ended up grabbing a Vizio 3D Full Array LED LCD (XVT3D554SV) and a set of 3D glasses and still walked away with over $1000 cash.

Now if I could figure out what to do with my Sony Vaio laptop with a dead battery that Sony is asking over $250 for a replacement.

Folks replaced my bulb today, as it died yesterday at 9430 lamp hours. All was fine, but somehow, when in the menu checking the hours, I managed to make the "system status" menu pop up on the screen. Tried everything to get rid of it. The double power button tap etc. I have unplugged the set and hopefully it will now go away.

Anyone know what I did to bring this up, and how to get rid of it?

Sony 55 A20

Thanks

I fixed it. In case anyone else runs into this problem, and finds this via a google search..... Here is the link.... It says its for the A10, which it is, but worked just fine for the A20

I have a Sony KDF-E50A10, 3LCD projection LCD TV purchased in 2005.
Been very happy with it, but today the bottom left hand corner has gone completely blue.
While not unwatchable at this point, it is annoying and I am afraid it will eventually spread.
The lamp was replaced about 6 months ago, so it should not be the issue.
I did some research and apparently it may be an issue with the optical block.

I invested $2500 on this TV in 2005 and expected it to last a lot longer than 6 years
Is there anything that Sony can do to help?

Thank-you

While I didn't read all 34 pages of this thread, I have searched for and read several threads about the KDF-A20 series. A local gentleman is selling his 60" for $800 and he says it works perfectly. After reading dubmang's post (#975) about buying this TV new from an overstock warehouse for $600 with a 90 warranty, I know $800 is too much. Would knowing how many hours usage make any difference or would you forget it and drive on.

First question - would you buy a KDF-E60A20 used at any price?

Second question - how much would you be willing to pay?

Does it come with a stand? I know the one I just sold for 700 included the glass stand, and the stand alone cost me around $500 years ago.

i have the KDF-E60A20 since it was first sold.

i keep having to replace the lamp every 9 or so months consistently. lamp costs around $80 to $90 and they usually come with only 90 days warranty

am i buying the wrong lamps or what? i like this tv too much to sell it.

but if the lamp runs out again in that time period im going to just move on and sell it.

any ideas where to get lamp that will last like the stock one did? the stock one lasted more than 3 years.

I have never seen a lamp for $80 that isn't a Chinese knock-off, referred to as "OEM-equivalent", which is a term of opinion. Only buy lamps that the seller states are Philips, Sony, or perhaps Osram. If they don't name one of those three brands, it's not. If they seem to want to avoid telling you who made the lamp, it's a Chinese no-name brand. Some lamp sellers sell both. I usually go to rivervalleyelectronics.net, but there are many reputable sellers out there.

^ hey thanks

i just went to rivervalleyelectronics.net and i like the prices and the free shipping. im about to order one now.

i put the lamp in my cart, it looks like a sony lamp. says so right there on top of the picture.

at checkout there is an option for "Osram Replacement Bulb"

should i leave that alone? when you said "perhaps osram" it makes me think its inferior?

*edit* looks like the website is forcing me to choose the "osram replacement bulb" and that is the only option. if i dont choose it i cant go to checkout.

They tend to stock both Philips and Osram. I prefer the Philips and generally have to pay $10-15 more for them. Osram is a good lamp, almost as good as Philips. If they run out of one brand temporarily, that button disappears.

Both are far better than a Chinese copy.

We moved our A10 up to our game room/exercise room. The tint is tolerable for now. I couldn't sell it to anyone in good conscience knowing about the problem and having the label peeled off the back. It still is better to watch than the 12 year old 27" Toshiba CRT that it replaced.

I'm so glad I found this information! I have a KDF-E55A20 that just had its optical block go belly up (blue blobs followed by the colored vertical lines) The service tech quoted me 750 which I wasn't going to waste on a 5.5 year old tv. Nice to hear there's a replacement option from Sony. I just emailed the Sony Listens email address.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

I maintain the informational web site (https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/) on Sony optical block and related problems with their 2002-2007 rear projection liquid crystal TVs. Sony had been running an "optical block program" for about 1-1/2 years in which owners of these failed TVs received discounts off newer direct-view LCD TVs in exchange for a legal release. This program was abruptly terminated today, and the "I Have A Defective Sony TV" Facebook page, with tens of thousands of customer posts, was turned off.

If you have a pending settlement with Sony for a failed optical block, you should probably try to resolve it quickly, as it is unknown whether Sony will be offering any future program. There is an alternative Facebook page called "I Still Have a Defective Sony TV (https://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Still-Have-a-Defective-Sony-TV/200792536623139)" that can be used for general discussion/complaints.
