Yes.OK, so I guess I don't understand your problem....the speaker volume is controlled by your amp. If it's a stereo amp maybe it won't power 4 speakers. Need a few more details please.

Firebird, I'll throw in my 2 cents. I was much like you... my space confined me to a 42" set as long as the speakers were not mounted on the side. I had always had conventional CRT sets and was concerned with the PQ of analog non-HDTV broadcast since we will be living with them for many years (I only get 5 HDTV channels today). After buying the 42a10 about a month ago, I've got to tell you the PQ on SDTV broadcasts is extremely watchable on this set. I was really afraid that it would be horrible, but was in fact pleasantly surprised to the point where I wondered what all the fuss was about. Of course the HDTV channels are an incredible leap in PQ... like looking through a window as they say.

As far as the viewing angle, my screen is slightly above eye level when sitting on the sofa or chair (viewing distance is between 8' - 13'). PQ is unchanged from my left to right seating positions of about +/- 20 degrees. However, when I stand up I notice a darkening of the screen, still watchable though. When I sit on the ground (which is more like your situation) the screen does not seem to darken. So for my set the downward viewing angle is about the same as the left to right angles. Your 6' does seem a bit high though.

As far as price, I was lucky in that I have a friend of a friend that works at Best Buy and was able to get an employee discount of $1799 - $500 = $1299. I am not budget limited in making household purchases such as this, but I still chose this set over plasma, LCD, CRT & other RPLCD sets and I am extremely happy with my choice. If you have any contacts that work at BB, CC or others, that would be your best price (most probably don't and I feel fortunate in this case). On the retail market my uneducated guess would be that these sets might come down into the $1300 - $1400 range before they are gone, as I believe Sony has a very good product here with a good reputation, so they won't have a problem moving the last ones out as the price continues to drop.

Good luck to you on whatever decision you make. :D

WOW, out of sheer coincidence, my teenage son has a friend that works at BB and has offered to "pass on" his employee discount to me. But, I got to thinking about it, and really didn't feel comfortable doing it because knowing my luck, it would be defective, have stuck pixels, etc and it would be a pain to have him exchange it. It is tempting though.

One question for everyone: I have read that low/no ambient light conditions are really not good for this set (read that in a review somewhere). Is there any truth to this, and if so, why? Reason I ask, is I like to watch movies in total darkness at the house, but the non-uniform brightness of my current set drives me nuts. I don't mind the fact that LCDs can't reproduce absolute black like a CRT, just so long as its uniform!

Thanks,

-Alan

Just wanted to add an update to this thread. Many of you helped me purchase a Sony 50 inch A10 about 6 months ago. Me and my wife really have been enjoying this set very much. Watching plenty of HD programming over DirecTV, lots of DVD's, and playing the hell out of my xbox360 on it.

So far I have no complaints at all. All my friends who have checked it out really like it as well. Had everybody over for the superbowl and some NBC HD New York Rangers games. None of my friends have HDTV's, so they aren't exactly high end users, and neither am I, but the TV has been a huge hit.

I have one dead pixel that has been there since the beginning, so it's all good.

I use the settings from Mr. Rain's post and am very happy with them.

Just wanted to thank everybody for helping me make an educated purchase. And would recommend this TV to anybody looking for this size and price range.

I'm no videophile, but I watch this set in the dark all the time and think it looks great. And about the true black thing, blacks look very black to me. But, that's just me, I don't know much.

the problem is that the rca on the tv is on a much lower level than my cd player, which is also hooked up to my amp.
if i'm listening on the tv and then switch to cd the volume is very very loud.
hope this helps.
the amp is 4x250w and i have been using it for 10 years (yikes, time flies!).

I got this TV a week or two back and like it a lot. (I've set it up using Dark Rain & deconvolvers settings.) I do have two questions about using it:

1) is there a way to add a single OTA channel without doing a complete rescan? The manual seems muddy on this point and I havent figured it out yet. (Maybe Sony intends that I use their Favorites from inside Wega Gate, but I prefer to press CH+ and CH- to surf.)

2) from time to time, without consciously rescanning, I've had new channels show up and old channels disappear. In all cases these channels are digital OTA channels. For instance 2.3 suddenly appeared last night (no video signal but with an channel designator) somehow in my channel list. A few weeks ago, all of the 9.X channels except 9.1 disappeared from the list, though they are still transmitting. Has anyone else seen this behavior? I can tell I am not rescanning because all of my other tweaks are in place, ie, all the NTSC OTA channels are still removed.

Random useful thing: If you are worried about SSE on this TV, take a look at the channel rescan menu which is a large, light blue box of text. This is as bad as it gets, solid blocks of light colored stationary color. I can definitely see the SSE here, and was a bit nervous as these menus are one of the first things you see when you buy a TV. But, in normal viewing, I generally don't see it. Motion and color gradation bury this effect pretty rapidly.

I have been reading this thread for a month and finally took the plunge and bought a 42A10 last night. Got it hooked up to a motorola 6412 phase III HD DVR and the picture is amazing straight out of the box! My TV has a March 2006 build date. Would you recommend I stil do the red push fix even though it is a later built one? Or does that not matter? Thanks for all the info as this is a great TV and I am so glad to have joined the world of HD!

picked up the 42a10 at cc today at sale price. having it delivered tuesday, wouldn't fit in my neon! should I get the extended warranty ? I thought I'd take my chances cause I think I'm only going to keep it for about 4 yrs (if SED is actually out by then and somewhat affordable).

I think that viewing angle issues also depend alot on ambient lighting -- the lighting in those big box stores is absolutely horrible, but when I saw the set in a SonyStyle store in a dim lit living room setting the viewing angle range was pretty good. My living room gets a lot of direct sunlight up until about 2pm so I'll probably be investing in some better window treatments which I was planning on doing anyway.

Cant wait to hook up games and progressive dvd to it, prolly going to upgrade to direcHD soon too.

Take a look at sony style's program before purchasing from your local store. I've been told you can purchase it up 11 months after purchase.

I have had this TV since the first of the year and it's a great set. Recently, however, I've run into an issue with HD channels.

Let me preface by saying that my local cable provider, which is a mom/pop type operation, rebroadcasts a few HD channels...CBS,NBC,FOX,ABC and WB (and a Spanish channel as I'm in South Florida). To add to the mix, the feed we subscribers get is DirecTV sent back out as rebranded material from our cable provider. Basic cable is part of our monthly HOA fees which is typical for South Florida communities.

The problem is that recently two of the HD channels...FOX and ABC...have quit coming in clear but rather constantly "break-up" like its trying to acquire the signal, which happens from time to time with digital signals I realize but shouldn't happen all the time. This happens regardless of the weather. Another strange issue is that I've now picked up an additional NBC channel, without having rescanned for channels. NBC comes in on 6.1 (the norm) and now the added channel on 27.5.

Funny thing is I joked that the set is becoming self aware like the computers in Terminator and HAL 2000.

My cable company researched the problem and there is no signal issue at the house...the signal is actually stronger than expected.

After all I've said, I guess my question is does this appear to be an issue with the provider or my set? I have an extended warranty through CC and was wondering if I should call them and get some of my money's worth out of the EW.

Regardless, this is a great set, I'm just trying to get to the root of the problem. Thanks in advance for any comments/advice/suggestions!

I keep seeing random flickering with horizontal black lines/ black rectangles across the screen. Sometimes it will even lose the signal completely for a few seconds and show the "Cable Box" label in the top of the screen, and then go back to the video. It does this completely randomly. All the cables are secure & snug in place.

I'm using a comcast dvr... what do you think it is, the TV, the DVR, or the cables?

I've had this happen on mine twice since I bought it, more annoying is when it decides to drop a channel! I have no idea what causes it, but you are not alone.

This brings up my other question: after the TV dropped most of my 9.X sub-channels, I started looking for a way to add them back in without doing a full rescan. There has to be a way to add a single channel back (I hope!), but I can't find it in the manual. Has anyone successfully added a single channel?

Is there a way to add a single OTA channel without doing a complete rescan?

No -- because for ATSC (digital OTA), there is channel mapping to take into account. The broadcast system is designed so that you don't need to know the true channel assignments (such as 37.1), only the "virtual" channels (such as 8.1) -- and those only show up after a full scan.

The build date doesn't matter. All of the A10 TV's have red push out of the box. Very easy fix though.

I have been lurking on this list for quite some time and just signed on this past week. I appreciate all of the comments and have been trying to read back pages of posts as I can. The A10 series caught my eye sometime ago and I am about ready to pull the trigger myself. My wife has graciously converted what was once a formal living room (small) to a "media" room for us, and the Furniture Fair folks just delivered a sectional kind of couch thingy for our viewing pleasure. Also had some blinds made so the only thing we lack now is the blasted TV and the other audio components! I am wrestling with decisons on whether to use some existing audio gear or select new stuff? Probably will post questions along that line later once the TV is locked in. Thankful in advance for any and all advice in this area.

Have to agree with dougzer0's comment above: I finally got over to my local SonyStyle store on Friday. Prior to this I had only seen the set in the local big-box stores. You can't really appreciate how good this thing can look until you have seen it in a "home like" setting similar to what SonyStyle uses. I sat on one of their little couches and just watched their HD feed. The way the room was setup was cool; they had the 42" and the 50" in such a position that you could swivel a bit and see either one. That sort of cemented my decision, that for my rather small viewing room, the 42 was still the probably best for me.

I look forward to being a member of this list/thread and again thank all of you for some great advice and assistance. We have never had anything bigger or better than our old trusty 27" Sony CRT sets so this is a big step for us! Mike

I have not read all the posts so forgive me but has anyone heard about the early models (A10) needing their firmware upgraded??? From what I heard after a set number of hours the TV's start having problems with their released firmware. Sony is covering the update free of charge. Anyone have any info on how to do this. Sorry if this has been posted a bunch already.

Tried feeding my 50A10 a 1024x768 VGA signal from my iBook. It looks great! Perfectly centered and 4:3 as it should be.

One would expect a problem feeding a 768 high signal into 720 high display. For example, it might be squished vertically. Or, cut off.

BUT that's not the case!

The bottom of the OS X Desktop lies perfectly at the bottom of the screen. (I can, of course, adjust it up & down a few pixels.)

The top of the OS X Menu bar is not, however, at the top of the screen. It is about an inch down from the top.

I could care less about 1:1 pixel mapping, but does seem as though 768 lines should fill all 720 pixels. And then, the 1024 pixels would be centered within 1280 pixels.

Any ideas about what is happening? How to solve it?

I've noticed that the TV does a pretty good job with "standard" resolutions to make them visible. It does, though, often leave black bars around the edges. I've seen that there is a program for MACs that is similar to Powerstrip called DisplayConfigX, but I don't know how well it works or how easy it is to transfer timings from Powerstrip.

What comes out of the optical digital audio output if you are not watching a 5.1 DD source? IOW, is there anything output if watching an OTA SD program? I do not currently have a receiver with 5.1 input, so I cannot check this out.

I'd like to try the A/V sync options on the 42A10 in order to improve lip sync issues which seem to appear at various times with various sources, including OTA SD programs. Hopefully I can use the TV's function with a new reasonably priced A/V receiver, instead of resorting to some high priced equipment.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I just got the 42inch A10 a couple days ago - and my HD channels are getting cut off on the sides.

For example, on the ESPN HD channel, the ESPN logo in the bottom right hand corner is cut off. And the logo's of all of the other HD channels are cut off as well.

It doesn't matter if the display is Normal, Full, Wide Zoom, or Zoom - the HD channels still get cut off.

Does anyone know of a setting I need to change to get the full HD channels to come in?

Thanks!

Sounds like a problem with your satellite receiver or cable box. Make sure you are telling the box that your TV aspect ratio is 16:9

A stero signal will come out. For instance my ABC channel doesn't have a DD5.1 decoder, so it comes out stero. I apply Pro Logic to it, but its a stero signal.

You'll get DD 2.0, which, depending on what receiver/settings you're using, will output the signal as Dolby PL, Dolby PLII, or Dolby PLIIx. In some cases, the station might be sending a DD 5.1 signal, but all you'll get is DD 2.0. Usually that is source related.

I have been using my 50A10 for the past few with out any problems. The other day my wide mode setting started staying in Full mode for all aspect ratios/resolutions. I have a SA8300 STB and it is set to allow all resolutions (480i/p, 720p, 1080i) and set to 16x9 aspect ratio. I am using HDMI input and for the past 3 months my wide mode switching worked fine. 480i/p 4/3 programming would switch to Wide Zoom, 720p/1080i programming would switch to Full. In Wega gate menu I have wide mode set to wide zoom and 4:3 default set to off, although I have also tried Wide Zoom for that, which did not help.

I am not aware of anything changing unless some sort of update occured to my cable box. All of the settings are still the same.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

Roadwarriors, have you got kids? Mine keep hitting the # key on the SA8300 remote which will force it into 1080i stretch. The A10 thinks its an HD signal and will be stuck in FULL mode, even though your 8300 is set to passthrough (or auto mode with HDMI). Just a thought, since it happened to me.

Thanks vtfan99. I set my cable box to an aspect ratio of 16:9 and I'm getting the full HD picture now.

Another problem however - I'm getting the closed caption (aka caption vision) on all channels now. I went to the setup and ensured that the "caption vision" was set to OFF. I also tried "Reset" in the Video options - where it resets the settings to the factory settings.

But no luck at all. I continue to have the closed caption on - and it's annoying to say the least.

Any idea's on why I can't get the closed caption turned off? Another setting somewhere? I checked my cable box settings and found nothing.

The SA boxes do a terrible job of stretching too. I like the scretch effect the A10 does, it's
nearly seamless. You can hardly tell it's stretched unless something is scrolling across the screen.

I do have kids and they always seem to find the right buttons. Anyway, I checked and the resolution for SD channels is outputing correctly 480, but for some reason all of the SD material is coming across as 16x9 format. At least that is what the TV says when I press "Display" button. Any ideas what would cause the cable box to output everything as 16x9?

This problem does not occur on DVDs or the built in Tuner.

Hmm... you've got me on this one. Assuming you've double checked all settings of the STB, I might suggest running the SA8300 setup wizard again or doing a good ole' STB power reboot; maybe something has latched up.

Coming this summer. It was mentioned a few pages back. Main thing is that there will now be a 46" and a 55" and they're dropping the 42". The new sets get an extra HDMI connection if I remember correctly.

Well I've had my cable company (Oceanic) come out twice now to install CableCard on my 42A10 and they can't get it to work. The card they installed works fine in the 42A10 in their office, but it's not recognized by my TV.

The CableCard option in Wega Gate Settings/Applications menu is grayed out. Is this normal??? I had the software update done and everything else seems fine. Anyone else have this problem??

For those who don't have CableCard, is your CableCard option in Settings/Applications grayed out too, or is it enabled when the card is installed???

Thanks for any help...

Two questions:

1) I have the 50A10 and notice that when I have a completely black screen (ie. no signal) i see non-uniformity throughout the screen, looks like there are very subtle pink hazy areas...when I turn the iris to min, the pink hazy areas go away and I have a completely uniform black screen. Is that the polarizer issue I read about? I can't really tell the subtle pink hazy areas are there when there is a picture on the screen unless it is a very dark scene.

2) I notice that 42" plasmas are in the same price range as the 50A10? If I don't need 50", would a plasma be a better overall tv than the A10?

Thanks in advance!

As I understood it, all TVs with HDMI ports are HDCP compliant.
It is the TVs that only have DVI ports that might not be HDCP compliant.

But then again, I could be wrong.

But since someone has already hooked up their A10 to a Toshiba HD-DVD player with success, the answer to your question should be "YES".

Quick question again regarding those who have (or have not) had CableCard installed on your A10's.

The CableCard option in the Settings/Applications menu is grayed out on my TV. Is this normal??? For those who don't have CableCard, is your CableCard option in Settings/Applications menu grayed out too??

My cable company (Oceanic) has been out twice to try and get it to work, but now claim it's my TV's problem and not their equipment. I also had the software update done and everything else seems fine. Anyone else have this problem??

Thanks for any help...

I don't have a cable card and the option is greyed out.Which makes me think that the CableCard option in the menu is enabled when a card is plugged into the slot. Problem is Oceanic has been out twice to try and get it to work with no luck. They're claiming it's my TV, as they have a 42A10 in their office and it works fine. Very frustrating. That's what the manual idicates. It says that there should be a cablecard setup screen that comes up when the card is recognized. I asked for a cablecard from my cable company, but they were very reluctant. Said it had to be sent to New York first to be programmed or some such story. What a crock!

You can expect SDE to disappear at around 7.5ft for the 42" and probably around 9ft on the 50". The good thing is that at these distances you don't lose any immersion, which makes for great viewing.

I'm watching a 50" from 12' right now and I see no SDE, but maybe my eyes aren't all that great. My wife is sitting about 8 feet from the screen and she says she sees no SDE (try to say that 3 times real fast...). Ive actually measured up and made a template with exact measurements, so i know what my viewing distance will be with either screen.

I too think 50" might be a bit large, and since hd isnt here yet, maybe 42" would be just rite?, i dont want to regret purchase later on......desicions arghh!!!!lol

Hi all,

I'm thinking about switching my Samsung HL-S4266W for the Sony KDF-E42A10. The main reason would be that I'm getting some audio/video sync problems on the Samsung, particularly on HD movies.

Does this issue occur on the Sony? I have my HD Tivo audio going direct to my receiver via optical connection.

Thanks,

I think audio synch can be caused by either the set or the incoming signal.

If you find that the problem is consistant with no exceptions, then its more likely to be the set. If occassionally it doesn't occur, then its less likely to be the set and more likely the incoming signal.

You might also want to connect an OTA antenna to be sure that the TIVO isn't somehow contributing to the delay.

Best of luck and let us know how this turns out.

It is the source material, not the set. Many broadcasters are still having problems with this...........it is hit and miss.

How are the black levels on your HL-S4266...........on a 100% black picture do you see black wavy lines coming up from the bottom of the screen from the word "Samsung" on the front...............I call it "black grass" and have now seen this on 3 different HL-S4266. It is not there on the 46" and above models.

As others have mentioned, it could be the source. I have a 42A10 and an older 27" Sony XBR CRT. My wife can semi-lip read & notices the same sync problems on both sets, placed side-by-side & fed the same signal. After much research & comparison, we came to the conclusion it's just more noticeable on the larger set because the picture is larger. Smaller lips have smaller lip movement & therefore less noticeable.

The good news is that 42A10 has an A/V sync mode that is adjustable and affects the optical digital audio output. So this may solve your sync problem, provided your receiver has an optical input. Mine does not, so I have not tried this function yet. But I do plan on upgrading in the near future.

I have a question about maintenance for the E50A10. My condo can get a bit dusty (I dont think the previous renters maintained the AC unit). When the sun is shining directly on the screen, I can see all the dust particles on the screen. What is the recommended way to clean this? Not sure if this belongs in this thread of the DVD player threads. Planning on getting the E50A10 soon (hopefully this weekend) and just want to make sure my planned connections will work: I was going to hook the component video out cables from DVD player directly to TV; coaxial audio out from DVD player will go to A/V receiver. This won't cause any synch issues when watching a DVD will it? I see no reason to have component cables go from DVD player to A/V receiver to TV - that would be just 1 more connection to lose signal quality right? Thanks.

How about a general cleaning? I know my MIL came in and put her oily hand right on the

mild soap and warm water on it and removed the hand prints. A had to hold my tongue

I did transport my first set that way. It developed several bad pixels and a slight
greenish hue in one area after a few months. Not sure if it had anything to do with the
transport method or not. The next couple of sets I got I transported them upright but
had to remove the box top to get it in '91 Explorer.

If you want to know how much more screen area there is between the 42 and 50 (which I think is what you're asking), go here (http://www.cavecreations.com/tv2.cgi). You can put in any 2 screen sizes and shapes to get a side by side comparison.

My 42 inch A10 is sitting inside an entertainment center with 40.5" of available width. The only downside is that I am unable to use the A/V inputs on the left side of the TV.

Keep in mind that for the A10 series, the bulk of the TV is just a projector screen that is framed inside a plastic case (aka "rear projection").

The area where ventilation is needed is in the rear of the set where the electronics, the projector bulb, the projector bulb cooling fan, and the bulb control system are located.

My entertainment center is completey open in the rear (no fiberboard back wall exists) and I have the center seated at a 45 degree angle in the corner of the room so I have good ventilation behind the unit.

As long as you have good rear ventilation opening and also a few inches of clearance between the back side of your furniture and the room's wall, you should be fine.

Thanks in advance..Consider this....the air intake for the A10 appears to be in the lower rear side of the cabinet. The exhaust is in the lower rear. You have virtually no clearance under the front of the set (unless there's air intakes in the speaker grills) and you'd be virtually cutting the side intake to "0". So you're left with air flow over the top of the cabinet....meaning all the "cool" air would have to travel over the top, down along the side, over the lamp, etc., and out the rear exhaust. Free air doesn't behave like this...I think you'll be circulating "hot" air in and out of the chassis, and there's no doubt the set will run hotter than it would with proper ventilation.

How much hotter is the question....enough to shorten the life of the lamp and other components? Who knows?

I think I have some info that may be able to help those with geometry problems.

A few pages back, I posted how I had about a 1/8" tilt from left up to right on my set - it wasn't something that ruined the picture, but tickers and such were noticably slanted (I actually saw it most prominently in my Xbox 360 dashboard).

I called up Sony who got me in touch with a service tech who suspected that the mirror was tilted. So he opened up the back of the set (seemed real simple - he removed like 9 screws and the back panel and the "input panel" came right off). Unfortunately, I was busy on the phone and didn't exactly watch what he did after he got the back off (and I really regret it now, but he must of just found the mirror and adjusted it with his hands, cause he didn't use any tools or anything.

Now, everything for the most part seems pretty good, and I'm not measuring any tilt near an eighth of an inch. I'm going to call them up and try to ask him what he did, but I bet someone would see it if they just took off the back, which I think I'm going to try sometime.

Anyway, I don't mean to motivate anyone to take the back TV panel off, but since we're all under warranty if you're seeing some geometry tilt, it's worth a shot to give service a call. FYI, the people Sony had me contact was A1 TV Service in Silver Spring, MD.

I have a similar 1/8" tilt, and like you said it isn't a big deal...but... How is Sony's customer service, did they give you any hassle? I also have a slight polarizer issue where the upper right corner and bottom left corner have a slight pink haze when looking at a black screen...again, not a big deal but.....wondering if it is worth a call. Don't want to have it "fixed" and make it worse. Thanks.

I had this set a week and I just took it back. I tweaked it the best I could, red push fix and did everything I could do but I could see SDE alot and some funky pixel tileing every now an then on both HD componet and HDMI DVD. Even with the detail down to 15 and the iris shut off it was grainy.

Its to bad. I have a GWII 50inch from 2003 with the full UMR tweaks that is still going strong after a recent bulb replacement after about 5000 hours. It has none of these problems.....not one. I moved it into the basement and I was thinking this new one was going to be even better with less space age looking plastic and smaller over all. Looked great, the color was great as well after tweaking but dam the SDE...and grainy picture.

Well today I got a Samsung HL-S5686W for $150 more and for the love of god it looks so much better. Just watched American Idol in HD and it was super nice. This is my first DLP set.....and man I am sold. The funny thing is I was a huge SONY fan.

Anyhow good luck.

Correct, they do not. The purpose of the service plan is to fix stuff that is not supposed to break. The bulbs are a consumable item, and are expected to break. The bulbs are covered for the first year.

It is a bet. The problem is, when you lose, you lose big $$$.

So it is piece of mind, in that your maximum loss is $279.99 ($70/year), and not maybe $1,000.

Hi, I have pretty much decided upon this TV (50" model). I also need a stand, and have found 2 deals on it that I'm debating.

a. The first is buying from Costco... I'd have to buy in the store. The deal includes the TV and Sony's recommended stand. The downside to this deal is that my car will not fit the monster box.

b. The method that is about $100 cheaper is ordering both a stand and TV from Amazon. Delivery is included in this method. I would then probably buy one of the nicely priced discount warranties online from TapeWorks I saw in this thread for about $200.

I'm not the kind of guy that would do the "Costco Upgrade" but was curious if their return policy is really as great as everyone says. Say something blows on the TV 3 years down the road... can I really just take it into Costco and get a replacement?

I have been having problems with a Toshiba DLP RP (PAL model of HM/HX series) and the dealer has agreed to take it back and allow me to take something else. The PAL model Toshiba DLP has VGA input and accepts a 1024x768 image which it scales to the native 1280x720 of the display device. This works very well.

I am now looking at the Sony A10 series LCD TV's which also have VGA input. But in the store today I asked them to feed in a PC image over VGA to see what it would look like and there were black bars around the image. The PC (a Vaio to be sure) was sending a 1366x768 image setup for a Bravia LCD screen and it was full screen. I looked into the PC settings and could not see a 1280x720 available resolution. The salesguy said it would need Powerstrip to get that setting. But he said if I could feed 1280x720 there would be perfect pixel mapping.

Now my PVR just has onboard S3 graphics and 1280x720 is not an available resolution. I did download Powerstrip but could not set custom timings since presumably the video chip just can't do it.

So it looks like if I want to get the Sony and have an image that fills the entire screen I am going to have to get a video card for the PC and possibly get Powerstrip? Is that correct?

I see also the Sony has some sort of scaling mode on the PC input. If I were to feed a 1024x768 image to it which didn't fill the entire screen, could it be zoomed up to fill it?

Thanks

I was asking if anybody knew where I can get a picture comparison between the 42A10 and the 50A10, to see how much bigger the 50" is compared to the 42". I have seen the 42" so many times in stores, I really don't get how these guys measure these tv's but that 42" is not that big compared to some 34" inch CRT HDTV's. Like it's not really 42 inches. I have seen the 50" and it looks so much bigger than the 42" tv it's not even funny so I just want to see before I buy the 42" to make sure it will be big enough or not in my house

They measure the TV's diagonally from lower corner to opposite upper corner, that's where the 42" or 50" comes from. This is how all TVs are measured - both 4:3 and 16:9. If you're talking about screen height, then you're right, a 42" 16:9 TV is about the same height as a 34" 4:3 TV. This is because of the different aspect ratios. A 50" widescreen is about the same as a 40-42" 4:3 TV. The 50" is a lot bigger than the 42" - 40% bigger. That site I gave you the link to will tell you all this info. Go there and compare a 42" 16:9 to a 34" 4:3 and look closely at the results, you'll see they are almost the same screen height, but the 16:9 set will have more screen area since it's wider. I hope this helps.

Well those specs don't list the inside heigght so i don't know what good they are. It should fit but
you might have to remove the box top. I had to lean my 50" over slightly to get it started
and once it was in far enough it stood up, still had to remove the box top. '91 Ford Explorer.

Hi guys I have a problem connecting my htcp with a radeon X1300 and my KDF 50 using a dvi-hdmi cable. Every time windows boots up it goes back to a 640x480 resolution...I have no clue why this happens. Is there a proper way to connect using the hdmi port or I have to use a vga cable? Consider that I have the European version so using the vga port does't let me go higher than 1024x768..Thank you

All I can tell you is:

I brought my 42A10 home in the back seat of a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix and it fit UPRIGHT. I had to remove the cardboard top and sides but left the cardboard/styrofoam base intact. I then used the styrofoam corner pieces to keep the set vertical without bouncing around.

So it is almost a certainty that you can get a 42A10 into your ride if you are creative enough.

Does anyone know how many times you can go back to CC to have your purchase price adjusted under their 30 day price match guarentee? I just bought my E50A10 on Monday night and now they have lowered the price. If I get the adjustment now, would I be able to get another adjustment later in the 30 day period if they lowered it again?

Oops deleted my thread, I ask because depending on the setting the TV or the moto box is doing the conversion to 720p. I believe that if the moto box is set to 1080i then the TV converts it to 720p whereas with the moto box at 720p it converts 1080i (which most channels are supplying?) to 720p.

Thanks

Set box to 1080i. At least for my Dish box, A10 does a MUCH better job of scaling. Try it. It will be obvious if it matters in your case,

As far as the box is concerned, some places do not require you to bring the box back in
the event of a return. The discount clubs require it but I believe but the electronic chains do
not. Ask before leaving with it. If they require you to have it , fold it up as small as you
can and store it away in your attic or ceiling joists of your garage if you have either. It
fairly large.

I have had 42" set for a few weeks now and I really love it. I have a Philips DVP642 DVD player connected to the TV via component. It seems like when I set the DVD player to Progressive Scan there are some odd display issues. Like when the scene shows someone's face from a medium-far distance, their bottom eyelids seem to have dark areas underneath their irises. Like the color of their eyes is bleeding slightly.

I have been experimenting with the TV settings and I have just found the CineMotion setting. I don't seem to notice the bleeding yet but time will tell.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Your DVD player has a poor de-interlacer. Turn progressive OFF on the player and let the A10 de-interlace the signal. In most cases it does a better job than the DVD player.

I just ordered the 50a10 due to the recent price drops with the new model coming out next week or so and after reeding through this thread and grand wega tweak thread. I am aware of the red push out of the box and want to make sure I have the best picture without making to many changes. the early entries has the red push being fixed by going into SM and changing:
CH_AXIS1 - 0002 (but I believe this created a green push)
but as of late (5/5) the new fix is changing both:
CH_ITU_MODE1 - 0000
CH_AXIS1 - 003B
and this will fix the red push without adding the green.

Is this the general consesus?
did you do A) CH_AXIS1 - 0002
or B) CH_ITU_MODE1 - 0000; CH_AXIS1 - 003B

Hi everyone... I just got my KDF-E50A10 and im pretty disapointed... Im using a Sony DVP-NS55P/S DVD player, using the Component Outs. After a day of tweaking, I still get a grainy picture, it looks pretty decent, but at Circuit City, the thing was SMOKING. They had the standard Sony demo (beaches, plates, motorcycles) and everythign looked amazing.

Why is my image nothing like that? I know im not using a HD Dvd player, but i'd imagine movies wouldnt look this bad with some Monster Compontent Cables.

Should I return my Sony DVD player and get somethign with an HDMI output?

Have you turned down the Sharpness setting on the TV? The default setting of 50 is just too high and will cause the picture to be grainy and very edgy looking. Try taking the Sharpness setting down to 25 or even 15 and see how it looks. It may look a bit soft at first, but over time you'll find it to look more pleasing. The other thing you can try is to adjust the DRC Palette if you're running the DVD player without progressive scan. Set the Reality setting to 0 and the Clarity setting to 100 to start. Then increase the Reality and decrease the Clarity settings in small steps to get a sharper and more detailed image. There's also a Noise Reduction feature you can try.

You might want to consider an upconverting DVD player because you'll get a slightly sharper and more detailed DVD image. I'd suggest the Oppo or Denon player that use the superior Faroudja de-interlacer.

Thank you very much for your help. I have sharpness to about 12ish, and I found that turning the DRC to Progressive helped alot, I cant seem to edit that setting when my DVD player is running though. Maybe I can edit those settings when I turn off Progressive Scan on the DVD player.

So would you say spending $300 on an upconverting DVD player/HDMI cable is worth it ? I really thought I would get a very nice VQ with this sony DVD player + component cables.

Anyway, I went back to Circuit City today, and they had my same TV running a Standard DVD player and it looked like mine, kinda sucked. I checked what it was running on yesterday and it was a Sony HD unit running something called an SRDX demo.

Progressive needs to be OFF to use the DRC Palette.

Your current DVD player is Sony's low-end one. It gets the job done, but doesn't deliver a lot of detail like you can get with an upconverting player. You can get a decent upconverting DVD player for around $130. But, I'd recommend the Oppo that's selling for $199. It's a BIG step up in PQ over those cheap $70 players. Its PQ rivals upconverting players selling for over $1000. Support for it is one of the best I've seen.

If you only watch TV for about 8 hours a day you'll probably get 2-3 years on one bulb. This assumes that the bulb doesn't have a defect, and that you don't turn it on and off a lot during the day. The A10 bulbs are rated at 6000-8000 hours. The good thing is that I have only seen a few people have early bulb failures.

Just got my new Sound and Vision mag in the mail today and was wondering(with a bit of concern) how the KFE-42A10s would fare with the new HD-DVD players. I just glanced through the articlet quickly maybe i should have read it more closely before posting this but to my understanding don't the new HD DVD players call for a 1080p TV. The KFE-42A10 is 720p or correct me if I'm wrong a 1080i at the best   I was just curious to know how these players would work with the KFE.

It will work just fine, the 42a10 just displays everything ins 720p, it can take any kind of input.

HD-DVD displays in HD that and blu-ray display in HD. So 720p is gonna be good there nothing else out there that anybody has that does that. All most people have is a progressive DVD which upscales to 480p. If i'm wrong correct me, and even if so the certain HD-DVD disc or blu-ray discs allow for a better PQ over DVD discs.

I have a KDF-42A10. When I am watching SD channels in 4:3 mode with the black bars on the sides, I have noticed a dotted white line outside the right black bar. Is this something I should be concerned about? I have only had this TV for 2.5 weeks, so I am still within the 30 days and could exchange it for another. Thoughts?

Anyone experience dropout of one or two HD channel with the cablecard and the A10. After months of perfection, my A10 shows INHD and INHD2 as "Not Authorized" which is bogus. I have Cox and their SA cablecard.

I tried resetting the CC, but no luck.

My A10 showed the same symptoms with a Comcast card a while ago. Called Comcast and they did something on their end which fixed the problem temporarily, but after a few weeks it came back again. After this happened 3 or 4 times I asked them to replace the card and that's seemed to fix the issue. HTH

The A10 bulbs are rated at 6000-8000 hours. So, at 12 hrs/day, you can expect them to last between 1 year & 4 months and 1 year & 10 months.

It's under diagnostics when you go into the settings menu using the WEGA gate.

So I looked at each of my OTA digital channels last night and wrote down everything. For SNR, I'm getting anywhere between 23-32, and for signal strength between and 78-98. I posted in the Buffalo local thread and they gave me some useful info about local reception, but suggest I ask here about how my numbers - particularly my SNR numbers - compare to what other people are getting.

Are my SNR high, low, average? Is there anything I can do to make them better? Would I see any difference if they were better? I'm using a Terk TV5 set top antenna now, but think I'm going to get a CM in the attic so I can get some more distant channels.

Well of course it's not 12 hours every single day but you get the idea. On a good day it may be on for 12 hours maybe like 3 days out of the week. I bought the set but I have 4 other siblings, plus summer is coming no more school for them.

Hey guys,

My new 50a10 is doing something weird. I want to check with you guys before exchanging it.
Basically, when watching a 4:3 dvd (with DolbyDigital), under WIDE ZOOM, I find that after a while, it switches to FULL. This totally breaks the immersion factor.
This happens on 2 different DVD players I have.
I noticed in the WEGA GATE, under settings, there's a 4:3 default mode. It was set to WIDE ZOOM. I turned it to OFF, watched the same movie a few times and it did it again. Since FULL distorts the heads, it's a bit annoying.
Is this a defect with the tv? I'm scared to exchange it for a new one, because of all the horror stories you guys have had...I don't want a new one with a frozen pixel, or dust balls, or whatever...this one is fine, save for this flaw. But still...it was a lot of $$$.

What do you say (I still have about 6 days left before I hit the 30-day mark).

Thanks!

PS I have the LG LRH-790 upconverting player, and the audio skips in Dolby Digital...anyone have any experience with this too? I'm about to exchange it too.

Fairblade, I would not be too hasty with the exchange of the TV. I had a similar problem but it involved my cable box; if I had a 4:3 source but had the STB output in 1080i or 720P, the TV would react in a manner identical to yours. I eventually left settings on the TV as "wide mode=wide zoom" and "4:3 default=off". I then made sure only true HD channels were outputting in 1080i or 720P. I even left my DVD as 480i out and let the TV do the upscaling. I would suggest some additional experimentation with your DVD sources: make sure he DVD's internal settings are for 16:9 or 4:3 as appropriate; try turning off the 480P or upscaliing outputs and see how the TV reacts with a 480i from the DVD (I think this is particularly important if your DVD is 4:3 aspect ratio normally).
Hope this helps a little.

I think the tv automatically displays what you are watching to that certain aspect ratio. Like when I watch some HD channels on my KDF-E42A10 they are in 4:3 while other shows I guess you can say that the more popular shows get more attention before being set out (The Unit, Two and Half Men), these shows will fill the whole screen while something like Friends or News on any channel won't but you can adjust to fit the whole screen, though once you leave that channel and come back it goes back to the original aspect ratio. So far seems that movies in HD do fill the whole screen. I have had the 3 for 3 days I saw both Shanghi Knights and 2 Fast 2 Furious on FOX HD they both fit the whole screen.

Hey Atek99,

Here's a couple of things that concern me.

1) my first dvd was 480i (component)...and the tv would still switch to FULL while the movie was rolling

2) if I turn the new dvd player (HDMI) to 480i, I can see jaggies. If I put it to 480p or 720p, I get no jaggies. I haven't seen the TV do upscaling...is it automatic? How do I get the tv to upconvert?

My HDMI dvd is set to 16:9 output. The dvd show I'm watching is 4:3. Whether 4:3 mode is set to off, or something else, it switches while the movie is rolling.
Maybe the answer is in your 'allowing the tv to upconvert'...how do I do that?

You don't have to do anything for upconversion, the A10 automatically upconverts a 480i input to its native 720p resolution (or downconverts a 1080i to 720p for that matter). This is really no different than what the DVD player itself does when it upscales; the question is which has the better deinterlacer, the TV or the DVD player. Unless your DVD player is an exceptional model, my guess is the TV's upscaler is probably better. Having said that, you mention that the 480i picture has jaggies; but you should also find that the A10's DRC pallette feature is enabled when you input a 480i signal (this feature is disabled for 480p or higher resolution signals). Adjusting the clarity and reality settings of the DRC pallette may solve this jaggies problem. The A10 (and I believe most widescreen TVs) seems to have difficulty recognizing a 4:3 progressive or upscale input as a 4:3 aspect ratio and always wants to switch to FULL mode. 16:9 anamorphic DVD's of course you would want in FULL mode. I still believe you problem is related to a "mismatch" if you will between what you are outputting from the DVD player and what the A10 thinks it is receiving. Of course it is possible that there is indeed something wrong with TV and your original instincts were correct. One suggestion, since you have a few days to decide, would be to go back to your retailer with your DVD player and have them test an A10 display unit.

P.S. Even though your wega gate settings for "4:3 default=OFF", check your wide mode setting as well. If this is set to "wide mode=FULL", this could explain your problem. I have mine set to Wide Zoom.

For people with the red blotch at the lower left corner, does your blotch react to the automatic iris? For me, the problem disappears almost completely if I turn the automatic iris off and becomes very bright if I change it to high. Also it seems that with the iris on, the brightness of the blotch changes from day to day.

I took out my cablecard, reinserted it and now I have all the HD channels just fine. A friend has an A10 which is doing the same thing, only with different channels. He has Cox coming to inspect his CC. Sounds like it is definitely the CC and not the A10.

You can find a lot of heated discussions on this forum, whether the one or the other resolution is better / preferred.
Most people probably prefer the native resolution of their display, since that tends to look a little bit better because of the not needed extra conversion.

Both resolutions have a similar bitrate, 720p tends to look a little bit better for fast moving pictures/sports (because the picture is refreshed more often), whereas 1080i is usually better for rather still pictures (because the resolution is higher)

Hey all,

Well. I switched my DVD player to 480i, and watched the same 4:3 episode over and over. So far in 4x of viewing the episode, the FULL issue hasn't popped back. Perhaps I've fixed the problem, but at what cost?

If I can't use the DVD to play in 480p or 720p, then what's the point? I'm gonna try checking the DRC palette, and turning it to something other than what it's on now, in the hopes that the TV will upconvert, and that the jaggies go away.

Oh ATEK99, I do have WIDE MODE set to WIDE ZOOM, and 4:3 to off. What I don't understand is that my old DVD was 480i, and it did the FULL thing too...weird.

Alright, so with my DVD set to 480i, a DRC mode appears. I set it to High Density, also Progressive and Off. In each case, there're jaggies. But if I put my DVD to 480p, the jaggies are gone. The only way to keep my TV from switching to the wrong zoom mode is to leave the DVD on 480i, but then I get jaggies, and the TV's upconverter doesn't resolve them. Even tried sliding all the way up on 'smoothness' for the DRC Palette. Better, but not as good as progressive. I'll have to return it to see what the next one brings.

FairBlade,

I don't know if it will help, but I have had my A10 less than a week and have been tinkering and experimenting like crazy, and found something similar to your situation. Maybe its the same, maybe not, but in my case, this is my very first widescreen TV, and although LOVE the TV, the manual leaves a lot to be desired.

Anyway, a good test disc is "DVE". What I noticed is when I was playing the content it was in FULL mode (filled the screen 16:9 content), but when I went back to the menu screen, it poped back in "Normal" mode (4:3). I think what isn't really specifically stated in the manual, and can get a little confusing, is you might have to set the "wide mode" not only for each source, but for each source content as well. I noticed at the title screens of DVE when I pressed display, it said the content was 4:3. When it was actually playing something from the disc and hit display it said 16:9. So I am *assuming* that is why it was switching back and forth from FULL (16:9) to NORMAL (4:3) is because 1) The content on the DVE disc contains both 16:9 and 4:3 source material, and 2) I had told it to do it that way for each piece of content. I also noticed while at the title screen if I hit the "wide mode" button on the remote I could force it to FULL and it would fill the screen and stay that way reguardless of the source content.

I sure hope that made sense. Being this is my very first HiDef TV, I am on quite the learning curve here, as there is sooooo many factors and adjustments compared to a regular TV!

-Alan

-EDIT- I meant to say I sure hope I understand and got it right above. If it works like I think it does, when I pop in my Star Trek Next Gen DVDs (full screen of course), it should automatically play them in "normal" mode (not filling the screen, and maintaining aspect ratio) since they are 4:3 content, and when I pop in a widescreen movie, it will automatically play them in "Full" mode, filling the screen hoizontally, maintaining aspect ratio.

Thanks FirebirdTN for your insight. First off, what's DVE?

2nd; no it's not like that at all. I'm playing a 4:3 tv show in WIDE ZOOM, and while it's playing, it jumps to FULL, making the heads all distorted. I haven't touched the remote.
Or I'm playing a 16:9 movie in Full mode, and it switches to WIDE ZOOM, also distorting the heads. I'm not touching the remote.

Yesterday, I paused a movie (in FULL), and when I came back it was in WIDE ZOOM! Hehe. Too much.

Set it to 1080i. The de-interlacer in the cable box is poor resulting in a soft and fuzzy looking picture from 1080i sources.

I say this with all due respect as his guides and input has been much appreciated, I feel this may be in part to the difference in source that we have. Hopefully DVE will get me somewhere that I am happy. Although I have a feeling that it will be hard to adjust everything correctly for a DTV receiver through HDMI off a different device not using the same connection.

Yes. The 6412 will downscale and de-interlace a 1080i signal if it's set at 720p since it overrides the A10.

Keep in mind that I watch my A10 in a controlled lighting enviroment. I do get more light in the room during the day, but I watch TV mostly during the evening and late at night. Having a fair amount of light in the room will require more light output from the A10.

Now, when I say a "flat look" I mean that when you look around the room and then turn your head toward the A10, the picture shouldn't be so bright that you immediately notice it. This is a sure sign that the contrast and IRIS is set too high and may cause eye fatigue if you watch it for long periods. I realize some people like it "bright," and that's okay if your eyes can handle it.

If you need more "pop" in the picture then you need to bump up the IRIS and PICTURE settings.

You might prefer to keep the ADVANCED IRIS off to get more light output. This would be good for daytime viewing with a room full of sunlight.

COLOR is really a preference setting, so add more if you think it needs it. DVE will help you with the color.

Get a decent VGA cable (there really isn't any such thing as an svga cable, it's marketing jibberish). Don't buy the VGA cable at best buy, I did and had to return it because it was causing ghosting in the image. I paid less than half the price at microcenter and got a cable that has been working perfectly.

See the link in my signature for instructions on hooking up to a computer. You need to go to www.entechtaiwan.com to get Powerstrip. You can use it without paying to try it out. Post the computer related questions in the thread I started or in the HTPC section of the forum.

I've had my 42A10 for 6 months and am very happy. I'm buying a new DVD player in the next month and I'm wondering what the best budget player to get me through the BD/HD-DVD format war is, for this TV. I am thinking about buying the Oppo 970HD and using the HDMI 480i output and letting the TV deinterlace the digital signal. Another option is the Sony DVP-NS75H and using either its scaler or the TV's.
I wanted input on whether the scalers in either of these players are better than the one in the 42A10. If not, it makes sense to use the Oppo's all digital transport of the 480i signal to get it to the GWV's scaler/deinterlacer. Do we even know for sure that the GWV can scale/deinterlace a signal coming over HDMI?

Thanks for any input...

-pottscb

I'm not sure about the Oppo 970, but the Oppo 971 has a better deinterlacer (Faroudja) than the A10. The PQ is very smooth, film-like, and virtually artifact-free. The A10 produces some artifacting and aliasing. It's minimal but you can see it. The Oppo 971 does show a slight bit of macroblocking on the A10 with DVDs that are poorly encoded or heavily compressed.

I have had the tv for almost a month now and i can see some horizontal lines on the screen when the movies camera moves in a vertical motion. The lines do not move, they stay in the same place on the screen almost like a texture or how a burn in might look. Its very faint and i can really see it on War of the worlds where there is a lot of smoke and on Ice age at the beginning when the camera looks up at the cracking iceberg. When i play Xbox360 games i can see it when flying fast through the clouds on Blazing Angels. Anyone have similar experiences? Also i can see it in some of the clouds on King Kong during the plane sequence. IS my TV damaged or is it just a limitation to the Unit? Im using a Sony DVD HDMI input 720P and i am running the xbox at 720p also and i still see it. Any help would be great

Leave your TV powered OFF for a day or so.

Once I experienced a burn-in like pattern (it almost looked like etching on the screen) on an LCD flatscreen computer monitor that displays information 24/7 with no screensaver or powersaver mode.

Merely turning the monitor OFF for a day caused the pattern to disappear.

Maybe the same will work for your A10.

I thought once I had my E50A10 and watched letterbox SD shows (like ER or Law & Order) and I put the TV in wide mode Zoom that the image would fill the screen without losing any of the image. Zoom does fill the screen but the top and bottom get cut off some. Is this how it should be?

I just purchased the 50” Sony E50A10 from Circuit City for $1700 shipped including tax. I am expecting the TV to arrive tomorrow along with the Comcast tech to install my HD box. I have a few questions:

1) What is the best way to fix the “red push” problem with this set (service menu)?
2) Is there a thread with recommendations to optimize the picture on the set?
3) what is the best connection try from an HD (Comcast) digital box? HDMI?

I appreciate all of your help.

A little.

Hm. Ok, odd that for me it goes from non existent to bad.

In fact because I have the european version, the service menu is simpler and it is easy to set all the colors separately for ire 90/30/5. Setting ire5 to max makes black a red to black gradient.

Fixing the red push, and some of the green push with ire 5 makes it better in a way that medium iris is now only as bad as the low setting was, and the low setting is ok.

For 4:3 letterboxed (black bars on all four sides) shows you can use the ZOOM mode to fill the screen. There may be a little cutoff, but nothing too significant.

You can use either component or HDMI cables with your cable box. HDMI may look a bit sharper.

The red push fix worked great, but would recommend writing down settings and not saving the settings initially as to evaluate without feeling you can't go back to the original (just for peace of mind). This way you can go through and edit, test it out, and get confidence before making a permanent change.
Also as far as pricing goes onecall has the 50A10 for $1599 - $75 rebate plus $125s/h = $1654.55 delivered to driveway

Thanks go out to Dark Rain for all his excellent advice. It has all been so good I am looking into getting the Oppo 971. :D

Do you have the interference filter, or what ever it is called in the us model, enabled? It could be interference bars that are just filtered out when there is no movement. This happens for me when im using 720p or 1080i and the refresh rate is 60.0hz. Changing it to 59.94 when using hdmi from the computer fixed it, but I still get it with my xbox.

Im also wondering if the refresh rate thing is not the only thing causing this.

No its a problem with the tv in general. I just ordered the 50" model and it does the same thing instore just not as bad as the 42" does. Its a kind of texture on the screen, is not a burn in issue as it is out of box problem. Its very slightly visible but enough for me to notice.

I've been using the ZOOM mode for the 4:3 letterboxed shows and it does fill up the whole screen, but the top and bottom do get cut off a little. For example, the bottom of the NBC logo in the bottom right corner is cut off. Nothing major, just wondering what the reason for this. Do the black bars the networks add NOT convert the picture to 16:9 format? I just always assumed they did.

I have the KDF-E42A10 I have noticed something on the screen on some channels it's not an issue for me at all. just wondering what it is or may be. It's almost like if you look at pavement on a hot day you see heat waves. So on the screen you see these heat wave type things going up from the bottom of the screen. Except they are more horizontal, almost like faded horizontal lines going up. It only occurs on some channels with certain backgrounds like red. I have only noticed it on analog channels (USA) to be specific.

Like I said it only happens on certain analog channels and it's not a big deal to me just wanted to know what it maybe. It's might be interference in the atmosphere or random noise that could be coming from anywhere. There are some analog channels on my cable system that show some interference. Channels 15-20 are affected. Luckily they have public service programming on those channels.

Only if it's in HD. If you're watching these in SD then you will always get the black bars. Is there a reason why you're not watching these shows in HD?

The A10 has some overscan (about 2%), so a small amount of cutoff is normal.

I'm having a problem with using the HDMI input on my KDF-E50A10. I have an HDMI cable running from my cable box to the tv. However, I want to run surround sound audio thru my AVR. So, I used the opitcal out on my cable box and connected it straight to my AVR (my AVR dosesn't have an HDMI or DVI input). The problem is that the audio is only in 2 channel stereo and not in 5.1. I then tried running the optical cable from the tv's optical out to my AVR, but that didn't work at all. Does anyone know how I can use the HDMI input for my video but use my AVR for surround sound audio?

Hello all,

I have a Panasonic RP-91 DVD Player connected by component to Video 4. When outputting a non-progressive 480i signal to my 42A10 and viewing a 2.35:1 movie, the image is perfectly centered vertically, with an equal amount of black bars (2.25in.) on the top and bottom.

But when enabling the progressive feature on the player, the image shifts upwards a quarter inch, with 2in. of black bar on the top and 2.5in of black bar on the bottom.

I've tried several other DVD's with both anamorphic and non-anamorphic titles with the same results. I don't have access to another player, so I can't check to see if it's my player or display. Have any of you seen/heard of this problem??

Thanks for your expert help and assistance...

You'll only get 5.1 audio on HD or SD programs that were recorded with it. Some HD stuff is 2.0, so your AVR will be outputting the signal as Dolby PLIIx. The optical out from the TV should work for OTA and cable signals. Your AVR made need to be set for "Optical" for whatever input your using.

I believe this is caused by faulty firmware in your 8300HD, so you cannot fix it. You 1) wait until your cable company pushes out better firmware, or
2) turn the cable box off and on to do a resync, or
3) use component input instead

This is a bit frustrating, since it worked just fine until the new firmware was pushed out, I think about 2 months ago.

Dark Rain (and others) - The content was definitely recorded in 5.1. I actually have a DVR cable box and when I play back the same content using component video cables and an optical cable to my AVR, it plays it back in 5.1. But when I try to use HDMI for the video, the audio steps down to two channel. What gives?

It must be some kind of config issue with the cable box. I'm guessing that it has something to do with HDMI since it carries audio. Have you tried using the digital coax output on the cable box to your AVR? It might not matter but it's worth a shot. I do know that if the AVR thinks the audio signal is analog it will drop down to 2.0 regardless of the source. My H/K 235 AVR sometimes gets confused when I watch OTA broadcasts that have 5.1 audio.

I know that with older TVs the speakers would mess the TV up because of the magnets, with my TV would that be a problem now too? I obviously just want to make sure, sticking it on top of the TV is easier for me than getting a shelf just for the speaker above the TV. Thank you!

You have to be viewing a HD program with DD5.1 sound. To get all sound also hook up standard R & L stereo cables from TV to amp.

Would I be better off having the digital audio out connected to the DVR box?

Is your AVR configured properly for Optical input? It should be set up to auto-detect both Analog and Digital audio signals.

BTW, you can get DD 5.1 on SD digital channels such as HBO, Showtime, etc.

I have my center speaker on top of my A10 and have no problems with. I got the OmniMount center speaker shelf for it. If it's a real heavy center speaker (over 40 lbs. or so) I'd suggest you put it either below the TV or mount it to the wall if possible. The reason being that weight of the speaker, over time, might warp the plastic near the top of the TV.

Yeah. Magnetic interference would cause problems if the TV had poor shielding. Magnets can also mess with the convergence. CRT TVs have an auto-degaussing feature when you turn them on. This clears up any discoloration that may be present.

The images look ok. The problem is when you photograph a TV picture, it is never that accurate unless it were possible for everyone's computer monitor to be calibrated exactly the same. A test pattern should tell you more than we could.

It sounds like you have the Motorola 6412 box. And you probably have firmware version 12.18 or lower, in which this is a known bug. Once your cable co pushes out a later version of the firmware, it will resolve this issue.

DI don't know what else you're planning on putting in there with it but a 46" wide x 16" deep TV should have no trouble fitting in a 71" x 35" space....

Take my advice and don't get too caught up in the tuning/calibrating thing....chances are that the TV will look great right out of the box. After about two months of coming here, I finally did the "red push" fix, and I'll have to admit it was an improvement, but if I'd never seen this forum, I'd still be enjoying the TV.

If I did all the tweaking I read about here, my wife would've taken the remote away from me long ago. ;)

Just wanted to thank everyone on these boards. Finally got the 42" last week and have been glued to the thing ever since. I was initially not that blown away by DVD performance, but I just my Monoprice DVI-HDMI cable yesterday, and now my Denon 1910 is putting out a truely amazing picture (content dependant of course). HD has looked amazing since I got the HD box from my cable company.
Question:
I've done the red push fix, but I still find that certain actors have a "reddish" cast to their faces on HD content (I really noticed it on Law & Order the other night, looked like Sam Waterson had just been running laps). What's the consensus on color/hue settings. I love the colors on uniforms and backgrounds, it's just some actors look "too" reddish.

Set CH_AXIS1 to 0002 to eliminate the red push entirely. You may notice skin tones looking greener or more yellow with this setting. In that case I'd recommend putting it back to 003B and turning the color down a bit more.

I just bought a second hand kdf-e50a10 and i find the pictures kinda dark. most of the posts say that the iris should be set to 2 or 3 and i have to set mine at 4 or 5. im thinking of getting a profesional to calibrate it but im hoping someone here could help me before i shell out 400 bucks.

Have you tried to adjust brightness or picture?

If you bought it second hand there is a fair chance that the bulb may have enough hours on it to be dimming...I've got 500 hrs on a 42A10 and no dimming yet. You can go into the Wega Gate menu and disable the advanced iris for full lamp power. You might also try "cooling off" your color palate as this sometimes makes the picture "appears" brighter.
