...how long does it take to switch between channels? on all the other tv's i've ever watched, changing channels was instantaneous. If you'll watch the bar at the top of the screen you'll find the set is retuning every time you change channels.
rollyfoster 07-11-06, 08:31 PM I still can't figure out how to get the entire program description to display for OTA stations. Long ones always get cut o......
Grateful11 07-11-06, 09:59 PM Wish I could. :(
You'll be glad you didn't in the long run. Paid cash for my 50A10 and I can actually enjoy it more knowing it's paid for.
kicks... less fuzzy how? Are you talking the silk screen effect, or the crispness of the image itself? I haven't seen them side by side, but seeing the 50E2000 in the store, I've gotta say I haven't been able to notice ANY difference picture quality-wise.
I'm talking about the image it self, they had the same thing playing it was like a concert and it was more fuzzy on the 50A10 like more tiny artifacts or porification (sp) or whatever you guys call it, maybe it was the signal but it looked more fuzzy to me.
tmeader 07-12-06, 12:49 AM hmmm, not sure what you mean by porification. Sounds like a feed issue to me. The only thing I'd consider switching up for would be if the E2000 series reduced the SSE vs the A10 (that's the real downfall to the A10 if, like me, you can easily see it). Too bad really, because it's a FANTASTIC set other than that.
Indiana627 07-12-06, 12:57 PM I still can't figure out how to get the entire program description to display for OTA stations. Long ones always get cut o......
Yeah that is annoying! Wish it would display the whole thing.
RassilonZero 07-12-06, 08:14 PM Sorry if this has been asked/answered already:
I just got a e50A10 last weekend, the first one was DOA, wouldnt turn on (great start...), and circuit city got me a new one the next day. seems great, but the picture is a bit crooked.
When i put up a box in xbox media center to adjust the edges of the (xbmc) screen, the right side is about a half-inch higher than the left at the top.
Is this something that can be calibrated out? or should i ask for another set? or will i just get the same thing on a third TV?
thanks!
bump909 07-13-06, 10:41 AM does it just happen with your XBox or all inputs?
RassilonZero 07-13-06, 06:39 PM does it just happen with your XBox or all inputs?
the xbox is where i first noticed it, as it has a nice full screen box to set up the screen...
But i can see it in the info display at the top of the screen, and in letterbox bars on several inputs.
bramma_99 07-15-06, 12:27 AM I got my KDF-e42a10 yesterday. While I'm amazed at the picture quality of hd content, directv, and dvd's, the image I am getting from my Playstation 2 leaves a lot to be desired, particularly while playign Socom 2. The whole picture seems too dark. Also, when I am in the shadows, I have a hard time seeing my actual guy and telling him apart from the background. Will buying some component cables for my ps2 make a big difference? I read that it does. Please help! The biggest reason I bought this television was for the gaming!
ice1874193 07-15-06, 03:16 PM i had this tv for a few weeks and had the same prob. w/ ps2 and madden. everyone came out pixelated and looked awful. I bought the component cables and it still looked bad.
i would chalk it up the the ps2 and not the tv though. i got the 360 a few months ago and it looks great (on diff tv)
bramma_99 07-15-06, 10:27 PM Well, I have to change the opinion I have of the kdf-d42a10 for gaming! Recently, I had been playing Socom 2 online. When I was in the shadows, I could hardly even make my character out. Well, after reading around, i found a couple of posts in the Grand Wega tweaks thread. Seems I had my television set to "vivid", where I couldn't get in to the advanced video controls. Once I went to custom, a little adjusting in those options and Bam! A little adjusting and my picture is looking awesome! And that's not even with component ps2 cables. Thanks everyone for the help.
ThePrisoner 07-15-06, 11:32 PM It can't burn-in, but you can get image retention that will eventually fade away. The manual statement on burn-in was intended for CRT and Plasma displays. It's an error on Sony's part.
I may have image retention onmy 50E2000. To the left & right it looks like the visible area where the borders are for 4:3. I watch SD in the normal mode (black sidebars). I'm gonna check it tomorrow morning to see if its still there. I heard turning off the TV for awhile might correct it. Would 4:3 material cause this so quickly? I have had the set for about 4 weeks.
RassilonZero 07-16-06, 04:38 PM So whats the word about the tilted picture?
Can this be calibrated out, or should i ask for another TV?
KevinXbox360 07-16-06, 05:50 PM I have the 42" A10 & Scientific Atlanta 8300 DVR cable box via HDMI.
Currently I have the cable box set to display EVERYTHING in 720p and it does make the non HD channels look better.
BUT would it be better if I set the cable box to "pass through" and use the scaler in the TV?
If I did this, how would I go about changing this on the TV?
I know that when a HD signal is being displayed, the DRC mode is turned off, but so far the cable box pumping everything into 720p looks better than 480i in Wide Zoom (with DRC mode).
Thanks for your help
bramma_99 07-16-06, 11:21 PM Can someone tell me what I need and have to do to get the 5 year warranty through Sony? And, can I wait until My year is almost up? Any help is greatly appreciated.
FirebirdTN 07-16-06, 11:55 PM So whats the word about the tilted picture?

I could easily be wrong, but to the best of my knowledge, geometry on a RPLCD TV is not something that can be adjusted out with service menu tweaks.
AFAIK, since the picture is being "projected" onto the screen, geometry errors can be corrected thru mechanical adjustments of the mechanism that projects the image onto the screen, but having never messed with anything like it, I don't know if I would try.
I didn't notice until I used powerstrip along with Mr Pibbs tweaks to display my laptop image on my new A10 that I also have a minor geometry misadjustment, but in my case, we are talking only two pixels wide at most (the top of my screen is leaning to the right by two pixels), so if yours is drastically noticable, I'd probably exchange it for another set.

I would definately recommend buying some component cables and setting the output in the playstation menu to component out for a much better picture. Play God of War and be amazed, but don't forget to set the game to progressive scan.
scottrleo1 07-18-06, 10:59 AM But let's pretend for the sake of conversation I have an A10 :)
I just put in a directTV hr10-250 HD DVR using HDMI. I've read I should set the output to 1080i so the sony will do the scaling. I know how to set that, but what does this do for SD channels?? It appears I can only have one setting selected. Also the DRC pallete is never available for me. Even if I set the output to 480i, the DRC Pallete option is still not available. Is there any way for me to configure SD programming and HD programming seperatley on the TV if it is all coming through my DVR??

I wanted to make sure about the 11 month time frame so I emailed them from that site asking how long I had to buy the warranty and they replied
"Thank you for contacting Sony Direct Customer Care. In regards to your inquiry, I apologize for any inconvenience. You may purchase a warranty up until 11 months after your purchase date. For more information about your options or the warranties, you may contact Sony Style Sales at 877-865-7669 opt 1, then 7."

Scott,
I'm not the defintive answer on this, but I don't think you can. If you see my post above yours, I kinda had that same question/idea.
Apparently the TV scales everything that comes into it, but the only way to avoid the delay/pause if have the cable box FIXED with a resolution.

Thanks, I happy to have a little more time.
Do you think Circuit City would take back my 42" A10 if I was to put in a little more money and get the 50" A10 from them? Now I bought my 42" Over a month ago but less than 2 months, so I thinking the return period is over but just before the first month of owning the tv came up I bought a 2 year warrenty with them. So what do you figure?
Some people in this thread and also in the GW V tweaks thread recently talked about fan noise. I just talked to a friend who also as an A10 about this as well, and he mentioned that he thinks the fan got louder after he received a firmware update from Sony. For myself
I'm not really sure about this. I can hear the fan, but it's not that disturbing.
What I noticed though is that switching to the high altitude setting does not change the fan noise at all. Does the high altitude setting still change anything or was it made redundant with one of the recent firmware versions?

Rico - I was one of the posters in the other thread discussing the fan noise; however, I've noticed it even before the firmware update. Like you mention, my noise does not change at all with the High Altitude setting.
I finally called Sony and they're bringing a replacement fan next Tuesday - I'll post with any improvements. However, given the fact that the HA setting does nothing right now, I hope the problem isn't somewhere in the firmware, with it somehow 'stuck' in HA mode. If that were the case, any new fan from them isn't going to make one bit of difference.
terzaghi 07-19-06, 11:32 PM Well i saw the 50a10 for sale 1619 and the stand for 49.99! I am going to try to go tomorrow or the next day, but I called everyone and I could only find 2 plac s still with the 50a10 and they only had a couple left, everyone had the 42 but all the 50 " were replaced with the new model.... so hopefully I can snag one of the last 50a10's i do not want to pay a couple hundred bucks more for the new model... maybe ill settle for the 42 if that happens...
anyway- anyone have any thoughts about the a10 vs e2000.. or the 42" vs. the 50"a10

People seem to be saying the A10 actually has more features than the E20's. I think they took out the VGA for one, and no advanced Iris control, it does have the same exact lamp, so no upgrade there.

Definantly get the 50" if possible. I debated forever between the 42" and 50" and now that I have the 50" at home, I can't believe how small the 42" would have been. The 50" is not overpowering at all to me and I sit about 9' away.

Well I went and got the 50"! I had to act fast because they were selling out... i called all over my town, and all people had was the 42", or the e2000 50"- i found a place with 2 left- one floor model and one in the warehouse- i got the one in the warehouse. phew! price matched it to antoher store and paid 1574+tax.
now i need to get the tv stand.... only one problem I dont go back to college for another few weeks, and im not going to haul it to my girflriends hosue for that time period (her apartment is small and there is no room to put her entertainment center)--- so I have a nice 50" tv sitting in the box at my parents! Im going to open it up and make sure it works fine tomrrow- then just leave it in the box until i head home. but i couldnt pass up the offer, especially on a tv that is going extinct. thanks for all the input everyone!
I had to drive like 5 miles with the tv box laying down (with the back of the tv on the bottom) since it wouldnt fit in my jeep standing up- so hopefully its ok.
im going to use a truck to take it home tho...

darthrsg 07-21-06, 01:02 PM Okay guys/gals, I will be getting my new set tomorrow after swapping my JVC 52Z575 in for repeated engine problems. The 60 inch A20 is too big for my space and I have settled on the 55A10. Is it the same as the 50inch A10?
Can you folks link me to the vital tweaks and usage threads.
What are you experiences with this model?
How does the Xbox 360 behave?
480p DVD?
Anyone use D* for HD and how is its SD performance?
I have read this entire thread over the past few weeks but see no mention of the 55 incher. The satisfaction of the owners in this thread for the 50InchA10 is the primary reason for choosing one of its fellow model mates. Thanks for any responses in advance.
I think the 55" is another A20, unless you're getting a 55" E2000.
Tom

There is no 55" A10....however, there is a 55" A20, so maybe that's what you are about to buy.
tmeader 07-21-06, 01:27 PM Yeah, at this point in time, I wouldn't go for the 55A20 (which is what you are likely buying). If you want a 55" set, and don't want to pay for the SXRD sets, Sony does now have a 55E2000, which is essentially an updated A10. The advantage over the A20 is that the A20 does not have an Iris control, so blacks are never going to be as good as you can get on the A10/E2000 through changing the Iris.
The company could just be calling the 55E2000 the "55A10", since that is basically what it is... but more than likely it's a typo and you're buying the 55A20.
I haven't experienced any sort of problems like that but should I still consider updating my television with the newest software? It says that my tv could use the update but If I haven't experienced any problems I'm not so sure I should do anything? Your thoughts?
I didn't had problems either, but I received a letter from the dealership where I bought it regarding. So I had them install the update. You can probably live without it, if you want.
The only reason why I brought this up here again is because of a friend, who mentioned that the fan got louder after that update. I don't think that the fan got louder on my tv, though it's noticable if the room is quiet (and the high altitude setting doesn't seem to do anything).

It is an A20, my dealer doesn't have the E2000 or the 50A10. I am coming from a JVC D-ILA so blacks just need to be the same. The A20 thread has lots of satisfied customers compared to the JVC thread. Will most of the A10 tweaks work on the A20? I know the service menu is different but the user controls are basically the same. Where can I find the service manual?
terzaghi 07-21-06, 09:29 PM a10 is better then a20

I've been told, if the problem accures you can just unplug the unit (reboot) and it will be alright until you hit the "x" hours again.
spyder696969 07-21-06, 09:58 PM In all, how many hours and how many dollars does it take to get a E50A10 set up correctly? I saw one of these for <$1000 and thought about getting it just for kicks. I'm not sure I'll be happy with it going down to a 50" from a 92" screen, but I thought I might like to try something different just for a change. I currently have an IF 4805 that I use for everything...TV, gaming, DVDs, etc. 2,200 hours in less than 7 months! The reason I ask is that the gf is getting a bit annoyed at all my tweaking. She loves to setup the new equipment and build the screens, mounts, whatever, but gets a bit disgruntled at tweaking after the first 3 months. Is this switch even worth me considering?
Schris22 07-23-06, 11:33 PM Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy a TV in about a month or so and the 42 a10 is at the top of my list. I know a lot of the 50 a10's are going because of the E2000, and the price on the 42 is dropping, but it isn't really getting replaced is it? Is the 46 the replacement? will Sony not be making a 42 proj. anymore?
I really can't get too much bigger than a 42 because I'll be about 6feet and am already worred about SDE. I've done some test in store, and it'll be close.
If anyone is wondering out of curiousity I'm also looking into HP 4260 plasma and Westinghouse's LTV-37w2. If anyone has tried these personally and went with the 42a10 please PM me as I don't want to hijack this thread.
Thanks,

Paul H. 07-24-06, 12:18 AM Just picked up the 42" A10 today for the parents. I got it at CC for $1375 (not sure if prices are okay to mention..if not PM me and I will edit, sorry in advance if its a no-no). I used the suggested setting on the first page. I had to use just the digital cable settings because the HD reciever will not be there till about Wed. Overall the pic looks great. I went shopping will all intentions of buying the Samsung 4226, but they were side by side and I liked the Sony pic better. Once the HD is hooked up via HDMI I will use the other suggested settings. My step dad is going to crap because he thought the digital signal looked good...once he gets a baseball game on HD he may never leave the house..lol...
PLEASE HELP!!! Ok I got a lil smudge on my screen tried to clean it with a cloth, I tried to damp it but it was too wet. I wipped the screen and now there is a white smudge on the screen. Very visible when the set is off or when you come up close to that portion of the screen. Is there anyway to fix it or get it back to the way it was?

The 42 is being replaced .As far as the HP4260 I have one in my bedroom and love it.
OMG!! It's a miracle I just used my breathe and breathed on a clean sock and wipped the scream and the white sumdge that appeared when I got the sock too wet and wipped the screen dissapeared. Now the screen is all even no patches at all. Exactly what the hell just happened is the screen designed like so? I was about to say how could Sony or anybody make a screen where the coating can wash off so easily and leave you hanging with no way to fix. Man I'm so glad right now that was a close one. So can somebody clue me in on why wipping with pretty much dry sock got rid of the white blotches?

No, they're still gonna offer a 42" model, but they're also going to offer a 46" this year. So, it's the 42" E2000, and the 46" E2000.

Huh?
You know how they say don't wip the screen of the A10 with something that is wet because you will wipe off the screen coating. Well I did it accidentally and the coating came off on the top left corner of my screen. What was left was these white patches/smudges at the wetted and wipped area.
I was able to get the screen almost totally black and even again without any smudges. So these smudges didn't appear because of dirt on the screen but because I wipped off the coating on the screen. GET IT?
There is still a very faint patch on it now but you pretty much have to look for it to really see it. I guess I should just leave it alone because it was a lot worse than the little faint smudge that is left now.
spyder696969 07-24-06, 03:52 PM Is this real? Sony actually made a screen with a coating that is water-soluable?
You guys are just messing with us, right?

When i got the Firmware update dune the fan did get louder i am 99.9 percent positive. But the A10 is one hell of a tv even now its a little louder.I did the red push fix and the grayscale fix and the tv is the balls in hdtv.LOVE IT! MIGHT THROW THE WIFE OUT AND JUST DRINK BEER AND WATCH HDTV FROM NOW ON. :)
Dark Rain 07-24-06, 06:44 PM You know how they say don't wip the screen of the A10 with something that is wet because you will wipe off the screen coating.
You must have used sandpaper then, because I've used glass cleaner on mine with no ill effects. I use a soft cloth and spray a small amount on it. Then I gently wipe the screen with it. Sony used to put an anti-glare coating on their more expensive direct view CRT TVs and PC monitors. This would come off if you weren't careful. The A10's anti-glare coating is within the screen itself from what I've been told. If you still see SSE then you didn't wipe anything off.
Dark Rain 07-24-06, 06:51 PM Just an update on my current bulb hours on my A10.
I'm nearing my 1 year mark in about 2 weeks and have just about 2500 hours on it. How is everyone else doing?

Are you sure? Ok when I come up close to the screen when it's off I see the screen is texturized as if somethign was sprayed on it. When I wipped it off and the set was on I could see the resolutions lines on the screen. I could clearly see that it looks like something was wipped off the screen. This was exactly what I did. I wet a sock, when I tried to wip the set there was a good amount of water on the screen in the area I wanted to clean, then I tried to wip it off and then this white patch appeared and the more I wipped and wet down the white patch appeared.
So everywhere I wipped with this slightly wet socks appears a white patch. So then I tried to see it I can deal with it, with the light on in my basement I turned to the X-Files, now you know this show is mostly in the dark. Well those patches were clear as day I could see it, then I turne doff the light and I couldn't but I don't want to watch tv in the dark all the time so it would have been an issue.
So I left the tv on for a while then took a dry sock, and breathed on it and wipped this area again, I also put a little deoderant on the screen to try and cover up the white spot lol, then I wipped it with the dry sock and the patches started fading away and the screen went back to normal (evenly black again) except for a very faint white patch that still remain but is very manageable.
I remember when I was buying the set the guy told me that people had come in complaining about white patches on their screen that appeared after people tries to clean their set with like water and a normal cloth or something. He suggested that I buy this one spray and a microfiber cloth to clean the screen. I also read a thread here at AVS about a guy that said the same thing happened to him as he tried to clean his screen with a swiffer dust cleaner http://www.homemadesimple.com/sites/en_US/swiffer/usenglish/products/dusters.shtml (http://) (the thing they advertise on tv).

I am not trying to rude, but with all the wipping you did what about trying to wipe?
That whole post sounds you beat the set to death and sprayed deodorant in its eyes :D . Did it strike first?
Anyways, I use a microfiber and no cleaner at all just the lightest amount of elbow grease.

I've had mine for 2 months and already have 787 hours on it. I'm gonna have to turn down the tv time or this bulb will be out soon. About how long does it usually last, any clue to the avarage life?

I don't get it, huh? Believe me I tried to be as careful as I could and not to have ever been in the situation. In the last 2 months all I did was use a soft clean cloth. This time there was a fly on my set I tried to fling it off instead my finger swiped at the set and left the smudge, without thinking I hurridly wet the sock and wet to town lol. I guess I messed up but good thing I was able to pretty much restore it. It would have really been tough tring to be koo with those patches on my screen.

I use a Swiffer to dust around the the TV and use it on the screen. I've seen no problems with it either.
If you're seeing white spots on the screen during the day with the TV turned off it's just a light reflection coming off the projection mirror inside the set. It's too bad people just don't realize that this is normal for these kind of TVs.
darthrsg 07-24-06, 07:12 PM I don't get it, huh?
You know whipping in place of wipping, spellcheck please. It is funny though.

That's a lot of hours for just 2 months. Bulbs are rated to last between 6000-8000 hours. I've seen some people who reported getting over 15000 hours one one bulb. This was on an older Sony Grand Wega.

No, I know about that one it gathers light in the center of the screen. What I'm talking about was never there only appeared last night when I wipped and it's was at the top left of the screen, trust me something was really up with this thing.

DarkRain or anyone else,
How much are the bulbs for these units? I'm over 2200 hours on my PJ in 7months. That means I'd blow through the bulbs in one of these TVs in about 2 years, without even whipping the TV. ;)

I've seen them selling for $160 on Ebay. Most places want $199 for them. Try Googling for "Sony XL2400 lamp" to find a deal on one.

Wow, that's like 13 hours a day......do you keep it on as a night light? lol
bramma_99 07-25-06, 01:39 PM How do you check the hours on your television? Also, how do you get y our display to show your signal type (480i, 480p,etc?)
Melanotheron 07-25-06, 01:55 PM To display signal type, press "Display" button on remote. It should show you the type of signal being received in the upper right-hand corner.

I like to watch the X-File and it comes on at like 11pm till 5am. And I have 3 bros so someone is always around so the set is almost always on. I guess it's almost a way of live for me, when a tv is off in the house it's like something must be wrong lol. There's also alot of 360 gaming going on as well, so the tv is about 4 hours 360 and the rest tv and movies because of VOD leakage there's always a good movie on.

So it's on about 9 hours a day. Mine is one about 13 hours a day lol. I seriously need to cut back, but it's good to know that it may very well last up to or close to 3,000 hours.
rscheff 07-25-06, 10:26 PM Hi, can somebody please help me, I've seen some pics from the a10 posted here and the pq is awesome but they were all taken with the lights of and I was wandering if this tv looks as nice with the room lights on as it does with them off. I've seen this set at many stores and it just looks really bad but I know there are some tweaks that can improve pq a lot but I can try them with the set showed at the store. Could anybody give me some advice on this, I just want to know if it looks as nice when watching SD with medium ambient light, say compared to a CRT.
If somebody can post some pics I would be gratefull. Thanks in advance.

I have an A20 and yes the A10 will look great in a room with lighting. You do not want any glare on it though.
966 hours in about 11 months. You guys watch too much tv ;-)
NickinPetaluma 07-26-06, 12:25 AM Hi there guys.
Well after my old mitsu RPTV crapped out I decided to go with the Sony E55A20, to me it looks like a nice TV and all.
But ive read a ton about it on this forum about it having a thermocouple failure... I really dont want to have to think about that failure espically because my set was made during that affected time frame.
Ive read that the A10's are more advanced and have better picture quality.
I can get the A10 for the same price as the A20 I got ($1400).
My question, without having to read the 285 pages on content here is - Does the A10 series have any problems that may pop up like bad thermocouples, thermocouple fuses, or "power boards"?
Thanks for all your helpful insight!

I, personally, have never heard of any problems like that with the A10's.
depthafield 07-26-06, 11:48 AM Hello all!
My apologies if this question has already been asked elsewhere in the forum…
Does anyone know if the Sony extended warrantee plan includes lamp replacement on the 42A10?
Thanks in advance.
While waiting for responses, you might do a search on the topic, which has, as you would expect, been covered extensively.

Welcome to the forum, don't let JonJ discourage you from future participation. Heck, I wasn't aware of the search function for some time after joining. Besides, your question is not answered clearly in this thread. The warranty covers "parts" but not "consumable items" so it has been interpreted in different ways. Also, it has been stated that the one-year manufacturer's warranty covers lamps up to a certain amount of time (8 months, maybe, not too sure about this). Also, different people have gotten different answers when they call Sony customer support.
Welcome to the forum, don't let JonJ discourage you from future participation.I beg your pardon. I did not discourage anything. I simply pointed out the topic has been covered extensively and a search would produce information for study.
NickinPetaluma 07-26-06, 01:51 PM So the A10 series seems to be pretty lemon free guys?

Leno seems to always look good on nearly any setup. His set is so full of color.
Tigerriot 07-26-06, 10:56 PM I've had my 42-A10 for almost a year now, and I finally got around to checking my serial number online tonight, and sure enough it says I need a firmware update.
Does anyone really think it's a problem if I just forget about it? I've never had my tv just shut off on me, but I did have it not turn on for some reason on a couple occasions. Each time I just unplugged the tv, and plugged it back in, and everything was fine again. This has only happened twice though in almost a year now. Never really bothered me.
I just don't think I want the fan getting louder, and several people have stated this happens after the firmware update.
jbiel14 07-26-06, 11:01 PM I have had the 42A10 for about 8 months now. The other day I came home for lunch and turned the tv on. There were colored (green, red, yellow, etc) thin vertical lines all over the screen. Has anyone seen this before. I thought maybe it was just the channel, but I switched the channel and the lines stayed. I even powered down the tv again and turned it on, again the lines were there. The lines were different colors as stated above and appeared over the top of the video that was showing on the different channels. They were evenly spaced like it was some kind of pattern. I don't know if my wife actually hit some button that caused this or if it was just some weird thing. I had to unplug the tv for them to go away. Anyone know what this could be about?
Thanks a lot kicks, those pics are really usefull, the pq looks amazing
No Problem

After about 6 months my A10 had the lockup problem. This happened with the TV on. It wouldn't shut off or let me change inputs. Unplugging it and then plugging it back in fixed it.
I wouldn't worry about it. Sony has stated that you don't need the firmware update unless you find unplugging the TV a problem. If the TV doesn't shut off (as in my case) you do risk the life of the bulb since it won't have a chance to cool down because you have to unplug the TV. IMO, if this happens within the warranty period and the bulb pops, Sony should have to replace it since there is no warning about it on their firmware update page.
Tigerriot 07-27-06, 11:20 AM Thanks for the input DarkRain.
It's one of those things where i'm not sure if i'm just better off not updating the firmware, as sometimes you just never know how things will end up.
For example, and this may sound stupid to some, but you never know how the actual tech will handle your tv when he comes out. What if he opens up the tv to do this update, and in the process causes some other problem months down the road. You just never know.

It's a software update. No need to open up the tv. There is a service port below the HDMI input (it's hidden behind a screwed-in door). The service tech simply plugs into the port and updates your software.

I’ve had my 42A10 for about 10 months now, and it’s been trouble free. I doubt I’ll bother with the update unless it starts acting up.
On that note…
Consumer Reports magazine recommended the purchase of an extended warrantee for sets such as the A10 series because (they said) of the relatively new technology utilized. I’ve not yet popped for the extended warrantee, but I’m seriously considering it.
What is the general consensus about these warrantees? Good idea? And whom should I purchase it from? Sony or the retailer (Circuit City)? The Sony plan is fairly inexpensive, but apparently does not cover the projection lamp. The CC plan is quite spendy, but does cover the lamp. I’m not sure which way to go!!
Anyone have any thoughts on the subject?
spyder696969 07-27-06, 10:14 PM How long is the warantee at each place? How much do you watch?

Vegas Vic 07-27-06, 10:39 PM Great looking set. Only drawback so far is Comcast's HD cablebox is not set up for HDMI. If I pay $6 /mo for their DVR, a HDMI connection is then possible according to Comcast. Considering using the DVI-D adaptor on the HDMI cable as the box is set up with DVI. Anyone else stuck with this for a solution?

You can get the adapter at monoprice.com for <$10. They have fantastic cables and adapters at prices that are rarely beaten. Still, the $6/mo for the DCT6412/DCT6416 (or DCT3412 if your area is all digital) is money very, very well spent. We haven't watched a commercial in years, and it's great to view a 1 hour show in about 40 minutes.

I have already ordered the adapter to go with the HDMI cable purchased recently from Monoprice solely for this TV. I resent having to pay the $6/mo simply because Comcast is unwilling to offer the HDMI in the cable box itself . Can you say "money grubbers"?
huskerfever 07-28-06, 11:48 PM Thinking about purchasing the Sony KDF E42A10... 3 year extended warranty on the bulb only is $150, and to protect just the TV is another $150 for 3 years.. NEED ADVICE! Do i need to buy both extended warranties or just one of them?? Thanks

Comcast doesn't make the boxes themselves. Motorola typically does, with a few others scattered here and there. The HD boxes with DVI were made when the DCT6412 Series II DVR came out, which also has DVI. Only the 6412 Series III has HDMI.
In reality, it doesn't matter which it has. You'll get the same quality from either cable, with the only difference being that DVI won't carry audio. Big deal.
darthrsg 07-29-06, 03:47 AM In case any A20 model owners stop in here:
By following Dark Rain's(Kudos) KDFE**A10 Grand Wega Tweaks and his grayscale tweaks I have found the same settings inthe KDFE55A20 service menu.
enter the service menu by having the set OFF
enter this sequence: display, 5, volume+, power
you will see a small area of numbrs and such in the upper left corner
press the JUMP button twice, you should see bold green lettering
press 5 eleven times to reach the D9809PIC item
press 1 four times to reach the RGAIN setting, it is defaulted to 127 on my set
press 6 three times to lower the RGAIN
press 1 two times to reach the BGAIN setting, mine was defaulted to 127
press 6 sixteen times lower the BGAIN
save by pressing MUTING followed by ENT(er)
power off, power on
He suggests using the WARM2 color setting, A20 doesn't have this so try WARM. I prefer NEUTRAL.
His posting suggests these tweaks are tracking very close to 6500K, of course without the right equipment you cannot be sure. I hope this helps fellow A20 owners out. You should read through the A10 threads for additional information.
There is mention of a red push tweak but the particular settings they provide I have not found in the A20 service menu. I personally do not see red push on my A20 unless it is set on the WARM/STANDARD settings. I prefer the CUSTOM/NEUTRAL myself.
I should also mention a poster by the name of zmn668 in aiding DarkRain, thanks.

Seems I have similar problem. Mine gets reddish hue in left bottom corner. It is best visible on black&white, grays or when you get the color setting to zero. At times it is very annoying. I do not know if I should call service or just live with it.

This is common issue with LCD RPTV's. The only options are to keep exchanging it until you get one that shows it less, learn to live with it, or switch to DLP or a flat panel.
killyoko 08-01-06, 11:20 AM Hello all,
I'm a longtime lurker, never posted. Anyway, here's my problem. I'm running a Moxi BMC9012 dvr on a Sony kdf-e50a10. Since I first installed the Moxi about a year ago, when I switch from sd to hd and vice versa, the picture will always scramble for a few seconds before "catching on" and displaying the correct image. It's not static, it's just a colorful, scrambled version of whatever is onscreen.
But this morning, when I switched from hd to sd, the picture scrambled and stayed that way. (the blue Moxi menu bar was also scrambled) Flipping channels didn't fix it. Hitting 'zoom' on the menu gave me a scrambled version of the menu. Restarting the moxi did not fix it.
But--going into my tv's menu and selecting another input (in this case, v6, which is empty) yielded an image. At this time, I was on an sd channel, and moved through the sd channels with no problem. But when I went up to hd, it scrambled again. I repeated the process of switching tv inputs and that corrected it, but switching back to sd screwed it up again.
So, has anyone heard of this? Do you think it's a Moxi problem or a tv problem? Obviously, I'm hoping it's a Moxi problem that can be fixed by switching units.
Thanks for any help. (I'm posting this in the moxi and sony tv threads)
HELP!!
I am a total novice and am having trouble hooking up my HD DVD player through my Receiver to my HDTV. I have an E50A10 and just got a Toshiba HD DVD player and a Panasonic XR57 Receiver. The Receiver has one HDMI input and one HDMI output. I am running an HDMI cable from my DVD player to my Receiver's HDMI input and then an HDMI cable from the Receiver's HDMI output to the E50A10's HDMI input. I am connecting my speakers directly to my Receiver.
The problem is when I cycle thru the TV?VIDEO button on the Sony remote, I get no indication of a signal through the HDMI input. With an HD DVD disc in the player, I am getting sound through my Receiver and out to the speakers, but no video signal into the TV. I tried another HDMI cable from the Receiver to the TV, but still no video signal.
Any ideas?
spyder696969 08-01-06, 11:03 PM Try the HDMI directly fro the player to the TV. If you get video, then it's one of the settings on the receiver that you're missing. I'd put money that if you hooked up component and composite inputs from the receiver to the TV, there will be video, whcih menas that you're missing a setting on the receiver that changes the unit to HDMI out. Let us know how it goes.
I did try two different HDMI cables directly from the player to the TV, but still no video signal.
Another piece of information, when I scroll through the TV/Video button on the remote and go from Input #5 to Input #6, I get a screen full of snow, with a grayish-blue bar across the top that says "no signal" in the left hand side of the bar and then the number "4" on the right side of the bar.
I haven't tried connecting the player to the TV via Component cables because that sort of defeats the full benefits of the HD DVD player.
I'm still stumped!
By the way, I bought the TV 10/16/05, so I assume it is still under warranty. I've never tried to hook up an HDMI input until today.
1. Does Sony have a phone-in customer service help line for problems like I'm experiencing? If so, what's the number?
2. If there is something wrong with the TV, how does one go about getting service under the Sony warranty?
Thanks.....wjr
HiHoStevo 08-02-06, 01:27 AM Have you pushed the "v-output" button on the remote? The player defaults to Component output and you have to push v-output to switch the player to the HDMI out... you should see small HDMI above the time readout on the player...
spyder696969 08-02-06, 01:51 AM That's most likely it. That's why I recommended hooking up the components and/or composites first. wjr, when someone recommends something like I did with the different cables, it usually doesn't mean to hook it up that way forever or even for any benefit other than it's just a way of eliminating one or more of the things that are involved in the setup as a means to the end. It's not the end in and of itself.
Thanks for responding, folks.
Yes, I did push the V.Output button on the player's remote and, yes, the HDMI symbol on the player is lit up. When I get a chance, I will try hooking up via Component as an experiment, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that the TV is not accepting the HDMI input.

Does anyone know how best to get in touch with Sony to discuss the problems I'm having with an HDMI input feed?
Thanks

Input #6 is the input you need for the HDMI connection.....the fact that you get a snowy screen and the number "4" leads me to believe you are jumping from input #5 to the antenna signal input. Try getting to input #6 using WegaGate instead of the TV/Video button.
Sony customer support can be reached via:

You might have that input shut off. Make sure it is not labeled "skip".
Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm embarassed to admit that Input #6 was turned off. Apparently, when the delivery person set up the TV initially, he skipped the inputs I said I wouldn't be using at that time. I had no idea that these inputs could be turned off (since he set it up I didn't read that section of the manual). My Bad!!

matrix_dot_ca 08-02-06, 06:00 PM I am having 2nd thoughts on which to get. I am choosing between 2 50" models KFE50a10 or the Samsung's HLS5086W. I know I could prolly get a biased opinion posting this on Sony thread but I am looking at the Samsung HLS thread and they were seeing "black grass" on dark images. So I am wondering if this A10 has some dispaly issues too.

So i should learn to live with a crappy picture on a almost $2000 tv? Hmm i dont like that idea, it isnt a constant problem but when it does it it is like im using an old broken tv not a tv that is two months old. It gets very annoying and i dont like how it just started to happen, the picture used to be great.

I also been looking at those to models, I hate for the fact that none of the Tvs out give me that "thats the one feeling" dlp has rainbows and lcd has screendoor effect and sxrd is very good but will cost to much.

The screen door effect on the Sony's (mine anyway) isn't bad if you're sitting at the recommended distance. I'm 7 ft. away from my 42" A10 and I don't see any SDE.
Do not get the update. After I had it done my wife & I immediatly noticed the fan is twice as loud & the volume level had been greatly decreased. Will be calling Sony today to get this removed if possible. What was once a great TV has just turned into a dissapointment, the fan is now that loud.
terzaghi 08-03-06, 08:42 AM perhaps the fan speed has been increased for a reason dont yah think?
turn the sound up or use surround sound if possible....
i just cant imagine a fan being so loud you could watch the tv... but i haven't heard it so i don't know.
good luck tho

Well, the other option I forgot to mention was to turn off the Advanced Iris since it makes the problem worse. But doing that decreases the contrast ratio and shadow detail.
I've connected my Toshiba laptop to my 50A10, and all works fine except that I have about a 4" border around the display area. The TV will not allow me to change the zoom settings.
Whenever the TV auto-adjusts, it tells me that the input is unsupported..
My laptop has a 16:9 display, and I'm running it in 1280x760.
I'm just wanting to use this for occasionally viewing digital pics, so I don't really care about 1:1 mapping or anything. I'd even be fine with a small (1" or so) border around the desktop area. The 4" is a little excessive though - it's like I'm only getting 30-something inches out of my 50" TV.. Any ideas?
I did search this thread, but most of the VGA-related posts seemed to be dealing with overscan or 1:1 mapping, not the huge border issue that I've got..

I would still use the post linked in my sig as a reference, even if 1:1 pixel mapping isn't that big of a deal to you. The TV thinks it has to shrink what it considers "non-standard" timings (just anything it doesn't expect). It doesn't take too long to set up a timing in Powerstrip, and you can revert to standard timings pretty easily.

Had the same issue, albeit between the 42" models. I read the "black grass" issue was only with the HLS42 though, not the 50" and higher.
I decided on the 42a10 (might get the 46e2000 now though). After comparing for several hours in different stores, I decided the Sonys had better picture -- I always seemed to notice a bit of artifacting in the Samsungs. But the way these stores have the TVs set up with multiple feeds off one source and constantly changing video settings, then it's probably hard to get a completely accurate comparison.

Yup ive tried that too, no avail. My tv just gets bad at times, im using my extended warranty to get a Samsung DLP. I know that the black wont be an issue with that tv. Too bad, i like the cabinet design on the Sony, Maybe an SXRD?

Actually, both LCD and DLP (and even plasma) have the screendoor effect when you sit too close to the TV instead of at a decent viewing distance. If you really like viewing a TV from an extremely close distance, you should get a CRT or a 1080p TV set.
Now if you are talking about the silkscreen effect, it exists in both LCD and DLP rear projection televisions and is particularly bad if you are sitting EXACTLY centered in front of the TV set and/or watch TV shows with a lot of white backgrounds such as Hockey games. If you can't live with it, the answer is to buy a CRT, LCD flatscreen or plasma TV.

Press the ZOOM button on your remote and the border will disappear. If I remember correctly, there are 2 levels of ZOOM, "ZOOM1" and "ZOOM2". In both cases you will lose a little bit of the edge of your computer's desktop when zoomed.

Do I need to be concerned about any conflicts between powerstrip and the controls for my existing graphics adapter?

Tried it, both with the zoom button and through Wega Gate. It doesn't switch between any of the zoom levels..

For the specific resolution you create, Powerstrip will enforce its timing. If you don't create a custom timing for a specific resolution Powerstrip lets windows/drivers control everything.
digitalman4242 08-04-06, 01:43 AM I just bought my A10, $1,000 employee discount from work. My question is, I would like to play 1080i movies off my PC to my A10, it's only about 4 ft away. What's the best way to do it?? I have a AllinWonder video card so I could easily hookup component cables to my pc from my tv, or should I invest in a HDMI-DVI cable and plug it into the DVI port in my video card. Right now im using the 15 pin plug from my "19 CRT monitor, I guess I could also get some sort of VGA adapter that lets me plug in two devices. Which is the best way to go? im thinking easiest and cheapest way would be the components???
digitalman4242 08-04-06, 01:43 AM Also since I just got this TV, do I need to update the firmware or something? im not familiar with this stuff, had a "27 tube sd.
digitalman4242 08-04-06, 02:06 AM This guy I know said he tryed hooking the A10 up to his PC and the geometry was slanted bad, and messed up, but everything else was perfect like his 360 or dvd player. My friend said his A10 did the same thing until he got the firmware/drivers, anyone hook it up to there pc yet? and what drivers are they talkin about? I just bought this TV, shouldn't it have the newest drivers on it?

I've heard of some people having decent luck with component cables from a PC, but I haven't tried it. I haven't seen great results with a DVI-HDMI connector from a PC. Follow the link in my signature for instructions on how to set up a great picture using the VGA connection.
jfell99 08-05-06, 03:44 AM MAJOR PROBLEM.
I've had the a10 for about 10 months, with no problems.
Today something crazy started happening. Whenever i would change stations to something with a different resolution (ie. 720p to 1080i) it would do the normal crazy line thing, but then it would STAY that way.
It would be stuck with 3 versions of the station on the screen at the same time. Cycleing through with the TV/VIDEO button would make it work when i come back to the station.
Once i got a 720p station working, other 720p stations would work, but no others.
It appears the internal scaler was having issues switching resolutions. Anyone else with this problem?
Any suggestions?
digitalman42 08-05-06, 09:47 PM Anyone tryed hooking this TV up to a PC with Component to watch movies? also is there a program to use if I do hook it up and get overscan, can that be adjusted? and I just bought the TV, should I get a circuit city 4 year protection plan for $211 that also covers the bulbs, I get a discounted rate on the service I work there.
i ran a test pattern to my A10 which is ment to see if your TV is overscaning... I noticed i could not see the edges of the test pattern. Based on the pattern I displayed, and seeing what was not being shown... I've determined it's about a 2-3% overscan.
I want to know if there is a way to opticaly adjust the projector to NOT over-scan the image.
I am sure the 3LCD chips are 720p but with this 2-3% over scan all i am seeing is ~698p
(i sent the test pattern via an xbox360 in full screen picture display mode set for 720p, out via component.)
I've also noticed when using VGA input that the A10 also crops off top, bottom and sides... further confirming my theory that the A10 overscans.
any way to correct over-scan, either by myself or by a AV professional.
digitalman4242 08-06-06, 11:29 PM Wow, so if you use VGA cable on your 360 you miss part of the screen? that is terrible.

Did you change the cable switch to hd and set the xbox360 to 720p?
What is the response time on the KDFE42A10?

That sounds exactly (sorta) like my problem. See below:

acerboy 08-07-06, 10:45 AM I tried searching through this massive site with no luck. I know the answer is on here though.
I recently purchased an Xbox 360.
Should I set the 360 to display at 720p?
What have people found works best with the 42A10?
Edit: I see a few posts above somebody mentions setting it to 720p.
Character_Zero 08-07-06, 12:25 PM 720p is the native resolution of the 42A20 and also of the Xbox 360. If you set the 360 to 1080i, the Xbox will then upscale the 720pp image to 1080i, then your TV will downscale the 1080i to 720p. So setting the 360 on 720p will cut out any scaling. But the real way to know it set it on 720p and then 1080i and see which one looks the best to you.
maverick0716 08-07-06, 01:10 PM What is the response time on the KDFE42A10?
There is no response time.....RP LCD's are different than flat panel LCD's.

The A10 is a 720p native resolution TV, so set your 360 to 720p. If you set it to 1080i, the TV will just scale it back to 720p anyway, so just leave it on 720.
EDIT: Whoops, the other guy above me said the same thing.....oh well, twice is better than once, lol.
terzaghi 08-07-06, 01:30 PM digital man-
I have my 50a10 hooked up to my 360 throuygh hd component cables, set at 720p. In my opinion the blacks look fine (tv or 360) i may have the black correction set on low or medium, but i prolly upped the brightness in order to compensate for the dark picture... my iris is on 3 or 4 i believe- and advanced iris is off.
but anyway- sounds like you may have solved your problem, but if your not satisfied just adjust your settings until you are- there are so many settings to fool with- your sure to get a picture you are happy with.
StlRamsFan777 08-07-06, 03:00 PM I hooked up my 360 on my 42 using the VGA cables recently. I have the tv on zoom, which makes me lose a little on the top and sides, but full1 and full2 give me black bars.
anyway, even on zoom, the vga cable gives me a better picture than component. The detail level is a lot better.
terzaghi 08-07-06, 03:30 PM there are several games that you may not want to lose parts of the image- like online with ghost recon, you could be cutting off someone on the side that is aiming a gun at you- and now you can't see them. i think that someone has posted someone about fixing problems with hooking up to this tv with vga- try mr pibbs sig i think.
edit--- ok i think that is for something completely different- but surely there is a way to make the image fit the tv better... im not sure. but if your satisfied then its not a prob a suppose
eggman1 08-07-06, 03:56 PM Just got the oppo 71 (older model) and hooked it up to the a10 with the DVI-to-HDMI cable. It plays ok but the picture is not as good as I expected. Is there anything that I have to turn off or on on either the A10 or oppo that would make the picture better?
digitalman4242 08-07-06, 05:52 PM It seems like there is a excess of PINK coming from this TV, and like some of the reds have a tint of pink to them. Im sure im not the only one who noticed this, is there a way to correct this?

What picture setting (cool, neutral, Warm 1 or Warm 2) are you running at?
Also, have you adjusted the picture using either Digital Video Essentials or Avia?
After making the proper adjustments, if the reds are still over-emphasised, go here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=567709&page=1)
and perform the red push fix.

Per chance, does anybody have some good picture settings for a Hughes DVR40 connected via Svideo to the A10??
Or... does DirecTV have a test pattern on any channel? I searched briefly, but couldn't find anything currently relavent... TIA...

BobRiff 08-07-06, 10:19 PM What did you use for your A10?
I prefer a "cooler" picture, so I have mine set on neutral.
Different people have different preferences though. You should try all of the settings and see what looks best to you.
Also, some people have posted their setttings in the Grand Wega V Tweaks thread.
You might want to try some of those as a starting point.

digitalman4242 08-07-06, 10:36 PM Okay alot of the reds came out fine now that im paying attention, it just seems some games looked a little pink on my 360, but some looked red like they should. I guess it's just the games, maybe my old RCA "27 just couldn't produce as broad of colors and I just wasn't use to it.

mplates 08-08-06, 07:39 AM The A10 is a 720p native resolution TV, so set your 360 to 720p. If you set it to 1080i, the TV will just scale it back to 720p anyway, so just leave it on 720.
EDIT: Whoops, the other guy above me said the same thing.....oh well, twice is better than once, lol.
MY kids 360 is set to 1080I. When playing games if I press the display button on the A10's remote is says 1080I 16:9. If the A10 is scaling it back to 720P why the does it display this?
Character_Zero 08-08-06, 08:16 AM It will display the incoming signal type. On regular TV it says 480i. I guess so you know what the source is coming in at.

Make sure it is set to upconvert to 720p. Set it on Video 2 for optimum de-interlacing (tray must be open to change it). Turn all enhancements off except for TruLife.

The best way to correct this is to apply both the red push and grayscale fixes (see my settings in my sig). Once these are done adjust the Hue to G7.
If this isn't something you want to do then just adjust the Hue towards green to make the reds less pink. And though I don't recommend using Clear White, it can be useful for removing any red tint you may see in the whites. If you do the grayscale fix then this isn't necessary.
malleusx 08-08-06, 09:04 AM Hi guys I have a question that you might have already answered but after searching I haven't really found anything on it. I have a 50a10 and have had it about 7 months. A couple months ago I noticed this smudge on the screen. It is of an abnormal shape not pixel related or anything, you can see through the smudge it is not opaque or anything and barely noticeable from where I view the TV, it only shows up against really light backgrounds when something is playing on the TV but it is present even when no video is being sent to the TV.
I have seen other people talk about smudges but not sure if that is the same thing I am seeing. I have seen a post somewhere that detailed removing the front screen and just dusting the back of it but am reluctant with that. The TV is still under warranty so I am probably going to call SOny on this just wanted to get some feedback to see if any of you have experienced the same thing and what you did or Sony did to fix the problem, did it work, has the problem come back, that sort of thing.
Much appreciated in advance for any info.
Thanks guys.

You're seeing what's known as the "SSE" or "Silk Screen Effect". It's caused by the high gain screen that all rear projection screens use. Only way to avoid it would be to instead get a flat LCD, plasma, or CRT set.
malleusx 08-08-06, 09:58 AM Well this wasnt present when I first bought the TV it appeared later. Is that indicative of what you are talking about? It is in only one small spot on the screen not anywhere else. It really looks like a thin layer of dust or dirt but it is not on the front of the screen because I have tried to clean it.
tmeader 08-08-06, 10:11 AM Is it dead center (seemingly the area that people see the effect in the most)?
I can't be positive without seeing your set firsthand obviously, but especially since you said that you can only see it against bright solid colors, that pretty much sums up SSE. If that's what it is, it HAS actually always been there, just your eyes weren't attuned to seeing it for whatever reason. Some people seem to have the ability to completely look past it and not see anything at all (ie - my girlfriend), but others can pick it up immediately. Then, there's others who suddenly see it over time. The "rainbow effect" that some people experience with DLP (myself included) works much the same way as far as "some people see it, some don't". There isn't really much you can do about it other than learning to live with it, or exchanging the set for one of the types I mentioned before. There's trade-offs currently with any HDTV, and for microdisplay rear projection SSE is one of them.
Roger28 08-08-06, 11:54 AM guys, how well does this tv perform with an xbox 360?
malleusx 08-08-06, 12:07 PM nah it isnt dead center I know what you are talking about I understand about the SSE but this isnt that. It is near the bottom of the screen slightly right of center. the SSE I can see all over the screen at times with bright colors and that doesnt bother me but this looks like a dirty spot on the screen.
malleusx 08-08-06, 12:10 PM I am using an xbox 360 with it and it looks really amazing, of course that is just my opinion. But there is no slowdown or delay that people have mentioned with dlp. It has a game mode that turns off some of the image processing to alleviate that but I have NEVER had to use it in game mode. It is silky smooth just running in the normal mode.
Besides this little spot on the screen I have been extremely happy with the TV. And the spot is really hardly noticeable. You can't see it at all unless its a bright background. I'm just trying to decide if its worth getting Sony involved to check it out or not.
I have the Sony A10 hooked up with a Directv HD box through component cables. I have the D*tv box set to output 1080i. When I vieW an HD channel, the display on the D*TV box says the program is 1080i or 720p. But the display on the Sony says it is 480p. The picture looks like it is HD, but I am worried that I am getting screwed and only viewing 480p...which would be a waste of money.
I've also been having the same problem as others regarding the DRC not being active for 480i programs despite the box being set to auto resolution. I even tried to hook up though a DVI cable with a HDMI connector.
Anyone have any thoughts on these issues? thanks in advance.
terzaghi 08-08-06, 01:44 PM wow, there is a game mode on this tv? how do i turn it on?
malleusx 08-08-06, 03:07 PM If you go into the WEGA Gate menu I think it is under the advanced options somewhere. I'm sure it would be in the manual. Like I said I've never had to use it myself but would be interested to hear how you liked it.
malleusx 08-08-06, 03:25 PM Jim,
Regarding your question of resolution from your Direc TV box:
I dont have Direc TV, I have Time Warner cable that just runs straight into the back of the TV and all the HD channels show up on screen as 720p or 1080i, all the non HD stuff shows up as either NTSC or 480i. So I would think if the TV is telling you that it is only recieving 480p then that is all that is being output to it. The component cables should do any HD resolution so I would think it would be something on the Direc TV box setup maybe. Again I've never had Direc TV so I wouldnt know about that part of it.
I'm sure someone here could enlighten us on that though.
There is no response time.....RP LCD's are different than flat panel LCD's.
I saw one site that said it has a 12m display response time time. I was noticing a little extra blur when playing 360 and with some HD programs.

Just came to ask about this myself. Is this feature just not active if connected via Component/HDMI?
I have my cable box connected with component cables, and it does output 480i. The TV registers it as such, but DRC is still greyed out in my settings.
Really a bummer because my SD channels just look miserable without it being active.

I have had my cable box hooked up with both component (previous) and HDMI (current). The DRC has worked with 480i in both configurations.
Wow I got roaches and they have entered my 42A10. I have seen 2 scrawl past the screen in the past few days. Do you think I can put some roach traps in the set and not have a problem with them in there? Like 2-3 traps.

The cabinet seems to have enough space inside for some plastic traps.
I do not know much about Insect Eradication Technology, but it seems to me that you could place the traps around the TV on the outside, and that would draw the bugs out of the TV.

I turned on the game mode to try it- havent come to a conclusion if i like it or not... I hadn't noticed any issues with visual lag or anything in games... but I turned it on- and one thing i did notice is that the smoke effects on chromehounds that pop up when u take over someone country, that are usually great-- grey and shadowed and textured and overall just looks great- now appeared as a nearly solid black cloud- not nearly as detailed... i don't think i changed any settings so it should be the same...
i thought that dlp tvs had more of a problem with video game lag- or lcd's with a response time >= 16ms.... so i dont know.
it may be beneficial in a really fast past driving game or something..
if anyone has used this feature with there 360 or some other game console let me know what you thought, or if anyone knows what this feature is actually doing let me know.
thanks.

Joe1956 08-10-06, 02:48 PM For the past few days, I've had a faded, reddish line at the bottom of my screen (42a10). It's a few inches wide and it's visible for hd, dvd and regular cable. The tv was purchased in January. Any ideas or help is appreciated. Thanks.

tornadobox 08-10-06, 06:41 PM hey guys...i've had my KDF-E42A10 for several months now (and I'm loving it)...yesterday i upgraded to Comcast's HD w/ DVR (i was previously just plugged straight into the cable line to the back of the TV).
my question is now that i'm not using the coax cable input on the back of the TV, is there any way to hide that input from displaying while cycling through the inputs? it's a little annoying to have a snow screen while cycling through inputs :(

Wega Gate, settings, channels. I think.

Try a rescan.
tornadobox 08-10-06, 07:49 PM Try a rescan.
tried that, somehow it picked up 2 freaking analog channels even though there's no cable plugged in...grrr! so i've still got the TV coax input showing up...anything else I can do?
*edit* - tried hiding all the channels as well, no luck with that either.
Melanotheron 08-10-06, 09:01 PM Tornadobox- I think if you set the channel to "zero" when you go past the input you will not get the static, but, rather, a solid blue screen. You won't be able to skip the input all together, though.

I had the same problems with spiders. Took some fresh basil leaves, crushed them and put into a piece of an old pair of my wife's hosery, tied the pak and put it next to the intake of the fan area. no more problems.
ssaboniss 08-12-06, 07:57 PM Hi there as you see I'm new in this forum, just registered to get some additional information about Sony KDF E50 A11 (I think this is the same as A10 but A11 is the name they chose for europe)
My parents told me that they saw this TV while shopping and just loved it. They really are into it, though I want to research a little before buying a product which will be used for years and years.
The questions I got are:
1) How would you describe the image quality? Better than LCD and Plasma's?
2) How bad is the viewing angle? I know horizontally if you stand up while the tv is in a sitting position it sucks but what about the width angles?
3) What are the positive and negative points you see?
Thanks in advance...

Another remedy is what we call "Horse Apples". They go by different names somtimes called Osage Orange or bodocks. They repel roaches like a champ. When I ran a pet store we couldn't use to many chemicals for safety and these worked great. Should be free too.

darthrsg 08-13-06, 02:08 PM I would say I can get about 6 feet of center from my A20 before it gets really bad. The manual has suggested angles. You can download it from Sony.
maverick0716 08-13-06, 05:34 PM Sony says the viewing angle is 178 degrees. While I would definitly not watch the TV from such an extreme angle, you can still see the picture.
ssaboniss 08-13-06, 06:25 PM no I'm not talking about the angles I can watch from, I'm talking about the angles I can watch from without any discoloration, with perfect comfort.

digitalman4242 08-13-06, 09:03 PM Im thinking about buying one of those dvd players that upconvert normal dvd's to a higher resolution. I really dont understand how upconverting it will help since it's only a 720x480p signal anyways. Does it actually make the movies look better? any downside to it?? also I see I can get 720p and 1080i movies and play them off my pc what would look better with this TV?
Character_Zero 08-14-06, 08:09 AM Well all the arguments I have read come down to one thing: Do you think it loosk better? On the technical side of things, this TV (the a10) is going to up/downconvert any signal it gets to 720p (so it upconverts 480i/p and downconverts 1080i). So basically its a battle between the Tv's scaler and the DVD players scaler. I dunno what scaler the TV uses but I think there are some better ones out there that might be in some DVD players. Hope that helps.

It does this on all inputs? If so, then maybe try pulling out the bulb assembly and putting it back in again, to re-seat it.

Natescavich 08-14-06, 04:18 PM Hello!
I just bought my 50A10 and am in the process of getting everything set up. I really want to convert my current computer to windows media center, and use that as my DVD/media player. I have a p3, 1.4, 512mb ram, and an ATI Radeon 9200SE Video card with 128 MB memory.
My question is pretty simple: Will this media center computer connected through the VGA input give me the same picture quality as an upconverting DVD player with component cables?
Thanks!

The cable should be fine. Cables are less important for digital connections (compared to analog connections).
You need to set the conversion in your dvd player. You can check the incoming signal on the tv via the display/info button on the remote. If the tv shows e.g. a 720p signal then your player sends such a signal, whereas if it shows 480i then the player does not convert, and the tv is going to do this instead.

I'm pretty new to this stuff. So if my display on my TV says 1080i, it's really only being shown in 720p? I have a SA DVR and it's set to pass thru. Is what you are saying that no matter what is being sent thru the DVR it's being shown in 720p? Why would the display show 1080i? I'm confused about this whole scaler thing.

The A-10 has to show everything as 720p as that is the native resolution to fit the fixed number of pixels available. The display will show the incoming signal (1080i/720p/480p/480i), but will convert all material to 720p for display. Please note that any fixed pixel TV (LCD/DLP/SXRD/etc) does this.
Natescavich 08-17-06, 03:13 PM Hello!
Thanks!
No answers here?
I am trying to make sure I have the right devices connected to the right input jacks of my 50A10. I just got rid of Time Warner Cable in favor of Dish Network (wanted more high def channels) and I am re-wiring everything. I was using a DVI to HDMI cable with the cable box.
I also have a Sony DD5.1 Receiver that I use for all inputs so audio is not a factor.
I currently have:
1) The Dish receiver currently connected by component cables.
2) A DVD (progressive scan but not HD) connected by component cable.
3) A ReplayTV DVR (SD) connected by S-Video
4) A Nintendo Gamecube connect to a VCR connected to the TV by RCA cable.
5) A Mac Mini computer connected by VGA cable.
Here's what I'm thinking:
1) Remove the DVD Player and play DVD's from the Mac Mini. Also play video from the computer's hard drive or internet. I can use the DVI to HDMI cable for this connection. Do you think the quality of video would be comparable to the DVD player?
2) Leave the Satellite box on component instead of getting a HDMI cable.
3) I could use component cable from the Replay but would the picture be better than S-Video?
What do you think?

TorturEd 08-17-06, 04:22 PM I noticed today that my TV is flickering when you are watching it the picture faintly flickers every couple seconds it has never done this before does this mean my bulb is going to blow soon ? I sure hope not it only has about 2200 hours on it and I only bought it last year. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Can anyone else help the 1 response I got told me to take out the bulb and put it back in to see if that works I tried it but no change. If anyone else can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say keep the Mac mini on the VGA if you have 1:1 pixel mapping. Don't see how you would get any better quality over HDMI. Component is better than S-Video jus tlike S-Video is better than compoisite. With S-Video the signal is broken into 2 pieces whre component it was broken into 3 giving better results.
roscoep 08-17-06, 11:35 PM I have a KDF E50A10 that is set to native mode and am using a DirecTV HD box (without a DVR). When I switch between a channel with an HD signal and a channel without an HD signal, the picture becomes garbled for a second or two. I assume this is because the TV is switching between the different types of signals but it is somewhat annoying.
Does anyone know if this is a normal occurrence or do I have something set incorrectly?
Thanks.

Sounds normal.

If it really bugs you, you might be able to look in the DirecTV box settings and uncheck all resolutions except 720p. If that box is anything like mine, it will then scale everything to that resolution and then you won't have that flickering.
However, you will lose the option of using the DRC Palette, which is why I just deal with the flickering.
DaBreeze 08-18-06, 12:44 PM I also have the 50a10 and yes it is normal for the brief flicker between signals. Doc, when do you adjust the DRC Palette ? And isn't the 50a10's native resolution 720p ? Doesn't almost everything scale up or down to 720P ? To my eyes, 1080i HDMI input my STB PQ has more noise in it than Component input. Has anyone else found that to be true ?

The TV will scale any signal to 720p. If it is recieving a 480i signal, such as most all standard definition channels, you can adjust the DRC Palette. However, if your box is scaling all the signals up before they get to the TV, you won't have this option.
psharris 08-19-06, 10:26 AM I've connected my Toshiba laptop to my 50A10, and all works fine except that I have about a 4" border around the display area.
Any ideas?
I did search this thread, but most of the VGA-related posts seemed to be dealing with overscan or 1:1 mapping, not the huge border issue that I've got..
i have a desktop sony vaio running MCE using the 50 and i have a vertical left and right border of about two inches and a horizontal border of about a half inch on top and bottom... doesnt bother me now thou it did at first. the 50 works wonderfully as a pc monitor and i now use it with a wireless mouse and keyboard from the couch to surf the web more than i use my laptop and other pc in other rooms...
Yesterday was the one year anniversary for my 42A10. It has 1617 hours, which works out to about 4.5 hours/day (very sad). I guess we will be thinking about why we spend so much time watching TV!
So, we are still very happy with the TV and have no major complaints at all. The picture (I did the red push fix only) still astounds us. Once you have gone HD, you cannot go back. I don't really look much at TVs in stores anymore, but the Sony still looks better to me than most.
I finally stopped playing with the settings after about 3 months of having the TV. After a point, it is best just to sit back and watch the darn thing instead of playing with it all the time.
I had the microcode fix applied when it first came out. I have never had any problems at all with the TV, including no blotches.
I use a micro-fiber cloth to wipe the screen maybe once a month. I really appreciate the much lower static charge on the screen with this technology compared to my old CRT.
Minor complaints:
1) Both Sony and Samsung rave about how their sets fit in tighter places, yet they put INPUT 2 on the side instead of the front. Duh!
2) Screen door effect was prevalent to me at the beginning, but now I very rarely notice it. I do still notice it though, but that is just an artifact to this technology.
3) I would be nice to have 2 HDMI inputs, but I would also not be willing to give up the PC input.
4) I don't know what Sony used for a fan, but it would be nice if they use their own fluid bearing fans that are very quiet.
5) It would be nice if I did not have to use PowerStrip to get 1:1 pixel mapping from my media PC, and even then it still does not fill the screen. Sony should have provided a resolution that perfectly fills the screen.
6) It would be nice if you could have the option to have different volume settings for each input. Due to my AV receiver, I want no volume for all inputs, except for my PC input.
I bought the extended warranty from Sony, a few months back, so I am looking forward to many, many years of enjoyment.
Thanks to all in this forum for the last year's (and more) of help and advice!
travis33 08-20-06, 01:11 PM I got the Sony service plan the other day, also. Sony said you must buy it by the ELEVENTH month of ownership. It was very easy to buy, I didn't need my reciept or even the serial number (I guess i fill in that info when they send me the packet of info). $250 for six (5+1) years seems like a great deal to me.
BulkHedd 08-20-06, 05:50 PM travis33,
Where did you get this service plan? Sounds pretty good to me too. I've only had my 42A10 for a few months so far.
psharris 08-20-06, 09:38 PM i noticed the other day at sears that the 50A10 floor model was being sold for $1399. i talked to the sales guy about that and he said the A10s are done now and once they were sold that was it. I started my 'death' watch for the 42A10 to go out and found on the best buy site that it is marked to $1299. I took that print out to sears and they price matched it plus another 10% off, so i pulled the trigger... i get it tomorrow! i will now have the little sister 42 to go with my 50"
whooooo hoooo!

how do you know how many hours so precisely?

Do a search in this forum on lamp hours and you will see the procedure to get into the service menu and where to look for the hours.
wolfpackron 08-21-06, 03:05 PM I am trying to enter the menu to check the lamp hours on my KDF-E55A20 Sony TV. I must not be holding my mouth right. I hit the "Display" key, then the number "5" key on the remote, then the volume + key, then the green "Power" button on the top of the remote. Can someone help me please. I am missing the boat somehow. Thanks in advance. WolfpackRon.

I found it is easier to use my fingers than my mouth.... :p
Are you pressing the large green power button? Also, all of these steps are pressing buttons on the remote, not the TV.
wolfpackron 08-22-06, 09:34 AM No, I was pressing the small, green, horizontal button. The large round button cuts the TV off. I am using the silver remote that came with my KDF-E55A20 Sony TV. WolfpackRon.
Question about 50'' vs 60'' projection LCD sets:
Heard from someone who cannot quite fit some images (mostly movies from DVD) onto the 50'' screen. Is that because the technology is really meant for 60'' screens, and would work better on 60''? Or is there no differentce between 50'' and 60'', as far as fitting the whole image on the screen goes?

abward, I only wish I averaged 4.5 hours a day. With three teenagers in the house, a constant traffic of friends playing video games and DVD's; when I checked my hours, I figured the average to be 11.5 hours per day. YIKES!!
Better start that lamp replacement savings fund! :)
psharris 08-22-06, 11:27 AM lamp replacement i can handle... what this has me thinking now is the lifespan of the set in general. I hope these will last me a good while... although i suppose at some point newer technology will spur the desire to replace before need arrises...

The short answer to your question is, there is no difference. The image fits on a 50" TV just as well as on a 60" TV. The person you heard this from was experiencing some other problem (e.g. he had zoom turned on for the 50" TV or was playing the DVD from a computer with some overscan problem).

Ah ha. This sequence should all be performed with the TV off first.
Also, I know this sequence works for A10s. I do not know about A20s.

I know there are megabytes of endless debate about warranties on this forum, but for me, I decided to get the Sony extended warranty. I too am concerned about the lifespan. It is probably better than DLP, with its spinning wheels and moving mirrors, etc, but things just are not built to last anymore.
So the warranty takes me through 5 years. After that, when it breaks, I will likely sell it cheap (or give to a family member), and just get the latest technology. Maybe then the SED sets will be cheap.
