tbird2340 10-24-11, 07:23 PM Thanks for the advice TBIRD2340. BTW, I recieved a response the same day I posted, but that may have been a coincidence. I agree that Sony has been easy to work with. They offered me the following sets:
KDL46EX500 for $225.00 + local sales tax
KDL55EX500 for $400.00 + local sales tax
I asked about other models, but the Sony rep said those were the only two available. I responded to their official offer email asking for pricing on 4 other models, but I haven't recieved a reply yet.
I saw that you had somehow contacted a Sony rep by Facebook and recieved other offers. How did you do that?
You're welcome.. Yes, Sony has a Facebook page specifically for this issue (well I'm not sure the page is by Sony but they monitor it and reply to wall posts..)..
Send a message to Amanda (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002233942016). Give her your eventID and ask her if you could get prices on different TVs.. She told me to look on their site and then PM her with any I was interested in and she got me prices on all that I asked about.
She was really really great..

My mother's Sony KDF-E50A10, purchased in 8/2005, just had a bulb replaced (we did it ourselves) and the optical block failed. she had a large yellow area in the center of the screen. She called Sony and they made her a decent offer, especially considering the fact the TV was 6 years old. She got the KDL-55EX500 for $400 plus tax and they shipped the TV to her in a week. I set up her new TV and it's very nice!
I'm taking the old TV and ordering an optical block from a site on the Internet and I'll replace it and see how much time we get out of the old TV. My mother was always very careful with it and so were we when we moved it to our house. We'll see how the replacement goes... Thanks for the good info here!!
I contacted Sony.ca (canada) directly,not thru facebook.

How much is the refurbished optical block?
fs250037 10-25-11, 01:35 PM Thanks again Tbird! I posted a message to Amanda as you suggested (she is great - you can sense her smile in her messages) and she came back with these options:
KDL55EX720 for $645 + local sales tax
KDL55NX720 for $840 + local sales tax
KDL55HX729 for $770 + local sales tax
KDL60EX720 for $1165 + local sales tax
Sony really is trying to work with us.
Kitlope 10-27-11, 06:19 AM Been reading this thread since 2006 when I purchased my e50a10. I'm kinda hoping it dies on me so I can get a new TV for reduced price but this thing keeps trucking along. Not getting any of the issues that others are having. It still looks good and tonight, after 12000+ hours of use, the new lamp bulb came in the mail so I installed it. Looks good! Had to turn down some settings that have inched up over time but its like I got a new TV.
azasadny 10-27-11, 05:05 PM How much is the refurbished optical block?
Used optical block is $200, refurb'ed unit with 60 day warranty is $350, with a $50 core for the returned dead part...
splinke 10-27-11, 08:01 PM IMPORTANT NOTICE
I maintain the informational web site (https://sites.google.com/site/sonylcdrptvproblems/) on Sony optical block and related problems with their 2002-2007 rear projection liquid crystal TVs. Sony had been running an "optical block program" for about 1-1/2 years in which owners of these failed TVs received discounts off newer direct-view LCD TVs in exchange for a legal release. This program was abruptly terminated today, and the "I Have A Defective Sony TV" Facebook page, with tens of thousands of customer posts, was turned off.
If you have a pending settlement with Sony for a failed optical block, you should probably try to resolve it quickly, as it is unknown whether Sony will be offering any future program. There is an alternative Facebook page called "I Still Have a Defective Sony TV (https://www.facebook.com/pages/I-Still-Have-a-Defective-Sony-TV/200792536623139)" that can be used for general discussion/complaints.
absampson 10-29-11, 01:08 PM Mike, just sent the following email to sonylistens (this has been edited).
We can barely see the picture on our E42A10 yet again and was in the process of ordering another replacement bulb assembly when I discovered that there is a recall on my set and that issues exist with lamps and optical block.
This will be the 3rd bulb in the 5 years we’ve owned the set. Circuit City was the original service provider and we know what has become of them.
From all the blogs I have read, it is apparent that Sony did not do the right thing by failing to contact us about the recall.
Please let us know what can be done to resolve this issue with our defective tv.
Thank you,
abs

The 55EX500 went from $400 (before the program was shut down a couple of weeks ago) to your offer of $775 (after the new program was started). Just look a few posts back.

I was referring more to the upper level models. Haven't spent any time looking at the low level. I do agree my initial offers from support are rediculous. I have seen the 65hx929 go for under 3k. I think they want to discourage people from perusing a proper settlement. Even now, SonyListens doesn't seem to treat every one equaly. Though I don't know what their individual circumstances were. I just know I was treated fairly with the new program. SonyListens told me the price I received was slightly below cost. Maybe he meant dealers cost. They also said some larger screen formats are hard to get.
skoobydoo 11-15-11, 11:57 AM If you go back up the thread to Oct 20, you will see the offers were about half of the Amazon price. That is about the same as my current offering on the HX929. But then this doesn't hold true for the HX820, so there seems to be no way to analyze this stuff. Must have to do with current supply and circumstance.
rafter65 11-29-11, 05:53 PM Hi all, guess misery loves company. My KDF-E42A10 has developed the good old optical block defect, so I contacted Sony. I know they changed the amounts offered at the beginning of the month, and here is the offer they gave me.
KDL-46EX500 for $550 plus tax (8.25%)
KDL-40EX720 for $635 plus tax
I contacted them again and they are firm on this offer so I have to decide by next Monday.
Any opinions on the TVs offered, especially the 46EX500? I don't really care about 3D and connectivity that much. Just want a set that will last this time.
I've been looking at some of the Panasonic plasma sets, mostly the S30 series, I seem to be hovering around the $600 mark and want some sort of extended service plan.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Melanotheron 12-01-11, 01:16 PM Rafter - I actually got one of each in the Sony rebate because I had purchased two A10's (42" and 50"). I ended up with a KDL-60EX500 and a KDL-46EX720 and I greatly prefer the EX500 series. It has the best picture, but, of course the larger size may influence my perception. The 720 has internet connectivity built in, which is no advantage since I can connect to the EX500 through my Blu-Ray or Roku. Finally, the EX500 thread in the LCD forums has a lot of calibration reports, so you can have fun trying out different settings to get the "ideal" picture. I don't hesitate to recommend the EX500 over the EX720. Good luck and enjoy your new t.v.!

Looks like we are the unlucky ones of the lucky ones? Not sure how you phrase it but I just started noticing this defect a week or so ago. I was offered the KDL-46EX500 $515 plus tax and I have to send them some docs for them to process it. I have two blue blobs that are equidistant apart one under where the channel logo usually is and the other in the exact opposite spot. Funny part is I watch a lot of espn and with that black bar at the bottom espn runs you can't notice it at all whenever there is a lighter color on the bottom you notice it. Are they flexible on price - it appears others were getting the same set for $225 - $250?

Those prices were when the program was running until the end of October when Sony shut it down.
Few days later like November 3 or 4 Sony reinstated the program but the discount on the prices are far less from before.

Thanks for the reply. Been offline for a couple of days. We had a wind storm here in the Santa Cruz Mnts. Wednesday night and only got power back Friday night.
Anyway, I called Sony again and they threw in the additional choices of a 46EX523 for $610 and a 46EX620 $705. Yeah, the EX720 3D and connectivity is something that I don't really need. I think most apps are just trying to get more money out of you.
Out of the four anyone have an opinion on the EX500 (LCD) vs EX523 (LED/LCD), or just bail on a Sony?
Thanks...

terzaghi 12-03-11, 09:58 PM My 50 a10 is still going on its original bulb from 2006. I've noticed a pinkish purple glow starting to come from the tip right corner. It's always there now buy worse during light scenes, especially white. Anyone know what this is?
terzaghi 12-04-11, 09:16 AM Is this the optical block problem I've been reading about? What do I need to do? See photo. Thanks.

terzaghi 12-05-11, 07:15 PM Email sent to sony. Hopefully it won't take too long to hear back. How quickly does this problem grow?
simply_bill 12-17-11, 09:47 PM I started the "I have a defective Sony TV" page on facebook and Sony is now staffing the page who deal with just these issues. I had 3 defective TVs and thought I was screwed. Sony stepped up and I stayed on to help. You can check out the "I HAve A Defective Sony TV" page or just email sonylistens@am.sony.com
GaryPSU 12-18-11, 07:33 AM I've posted on the Facebook page referred to above, and also sent an email to Sony with my serial number and a picture of the screen. I'm concerned that since it took six years for the problem to appear, I won't be offered much, if anything.
My Sony E50A10, purchased new in December 2005, has started displaying a broad yellow area in the center and a faint blue arc in the upper left of the screen. I sent an email to SonyListens and received a reply yesterday, providing an event number and saying I was able to participate in the replacement program and to call them during normal hours M - F, which I will do tomorrow (as today is Christmas). It seems from these forums that typical options include the EX500, HX729, and NX720 lines if one asks Sony about the upper lines. IF this should come up, which line have most been selecting and have they been happy with their choice? This question may be splitting hairs but I will have to live with the replacement tv for awhile, and would like to pick a solid model with the least amount of potential "issues". I will continue to read through these forums, a GREAT resource, but would appreciate anyone's recent experiences, good or bad. Thanks.
GaryPSU 12-25-11, 05:20 PM I am in the process of getting a replacement foy my e50a10 from November, 2005. You can ask for prices of other models. I am getting the KDL-55EX720. The price beats all of those available elsewhere, but it's not a bargain basement price. I don't care about 3D, but wantred an LED model.
Injected Sin 12-26-11, 11:15 PM How much did you end up paying?
keenyoung 12-26-11, 11:40 PM I got the KDL-46EX710 and I am very happy with it. Lots of good usable features and a fantastic picture. I know there were some problems with the early releases of this model like problems with the edge lighting and deep blacks, but I think they solved this with a new source for the panels as I have seen none of these problems. I also don't have any trouble with color washout at higher viewing angles. I would certainly buy another.

I was offered the KDL55EX720 for $950. Better than I could buy it for elsewhere, but not nearly as good as Sony's offers a few months ago. I wish I had known about this earlier.
Update
Sony has quoted my options for 55-inch televisions as EX500 for $775, HX729 for $1075, or NX720 for $1150. This is current offerings for the replacement program for my sick E50A10. Appreciate any comments/experiences/recommendations.

I had a KDF-E42A10 that developed a big yellow spot in the middle. I was offered 3 choices, a 42 inch backlit for free, a 55 incher for $250, and the 46 inch 710 for $125. I wanted an LED, and the 46 inch fits my room the best.
FYI, my daughter is using the old KDF which I fixed for her.

I would jump this in a minute if I could get a replacement set at those prices. I assume your replacement came under the old program. I noticed an optical block problem in November, but didn't look up the problem until December. Unfortunately from later posts it looks like the price for a replacement 46 inch is 4 to 5 times as much. I'm thinking at this point there may be better replacement options than Sony.

I replaced my 42A10 and my 50A10 about nine months ago, and I paid $125 for a 46 inch 710 and $400 for a 60 inch EX500.
Durrin00 01-05-12, 08:53 PM I have the KDFE55A10. Bought new in 2006. I believe the HDMI input may have quit working. Just got a new Denon 1612 Receiver and it worked great the first weekend then all of a sudden blank screen. Thought it was the receiver, got a new one, same thing. Not the HDMI cable. Not the bulb cause I get picture and sound from component. Any ideas?
I finally got around to contacting Sony (888-993-7669) about my 2006 KDF-E50A10 with the optical block issue (my first post here is back on page 358 from August 2011 ... damn my procrastination! ). The offer I got was:
KDL55EX500 $775.00 + local sales tax
KDL46EX500 $515.00 + local sales tax
A co-worker who had purchased the next higher model at the same time also contacted Sony this week and was given the same options, but $100 less per set.
To claim the offer, the requirements are:
(1) Write the model and serial number of the TV and the ticket number provided by Sony on a sheet of paper, then remove the black serial number tag from the TV and attach it to the paper.
(2) Take a picture of the TV showing the issue and with the ticket number written on a paper taped to the bottom of the TV.
(3) Mail a color copy of the picture and the paper along with the actual serial number sticker.
I am wondering if anyone here has had this experience.
My question: Is there a direct relationship between the amount of everyday use of my E50A10 and the appearance of the optical block issue?
The A10 was my main TV in the family room until October 2009 when it developed the blobs and optical block problem. I took advantage of Sony's replacement program and the TV went into mothballs for a month or so. I then hooked it up in the basement for the kids to use mostly for their Wii and some TV viewing. The blob remained and was very apparent for awhile. At the same time, the children had a bad habit of leaving the TV on when they were done - sometimes for hours at a time.
By the time summer arrived, two things changed. First, the kids became more responsible in shutting the TV off and they also spent a lot more time outside playing and less downstairs. The use of the set went from 5+ hours daily as our main unit to an hour or so on the days it was used - maybe 3 or 4 days per week.
I played a little Wii this morning with my youngest. After we were done, I studied the screen very closely - I see no evidence of the blobs anywhere. I don't think it's logical to believe the problem fixed itself and is gone for good. I am sure if there was a fix Sony would have went down that road instead of replacing all these sets. So my conclusion is this has to be related to the amount of use the set gets and is dependent on heat and temperature inside.
Has anyone had the same experience over time?

I gave my old set to my daughter for occasional use....I'll have to ask her if she's noticed any improvement?
mazraen 01-12-12, 09:55 PM My e42a10 is very dim. I replaced the bulb, but there isn't much of a difference. The blacks have almost no detail.
But, I don't have any blue (or any color) blobs. So I'm not sure if it's the optical block.
Is there something else it could be?
mazraen 01-12-12, 11:17 PM "But, I don't have any blue (or any color) blobs. So I'm not sure if it's the optical block."
I would say that there is a blue tint to the black levels. but couldn't that just be the lcd backlight?

Sounds like a good deal to me as you can spend it on any Sony set you want as opposed to being offered specific TVs. Offer is significantly more off 55" sets than some recent participants have posted.
I've been in conversation with Sony for a few weeks now. I have an almost 6 year old KDF-E42A10 with optical block issues. At first, they offered me 2 choices:
KDL46EX500 $515.00 + local sales tax
KDL40EX720 $635.00 + local sales tax
I thought each was more than I wanted to spend. Recently they have contacted me and suggested I research other models. Today I received 3 more offers:
KDLBX420 $496 + local sales tax
KDLEX521 $551 + local sales tax
KDLEX523 $609 + local sales tax
Anyone getting anything better? Next conversation I'll ask about the no expiration credit posted by calitoronto.

These are about what I have seen in most offers. I'm suspecting that the few better offers I have seen may involve reimbursement for expenses (lamps & repairs). I'd be interested to know if they offer the credit.
A while back I had my KDF-E50A10 running for a few hours when the power suddenly went out. Stupidly at the time I didn't have it hooked up to a UPS, so the fan couldn't continue cooling the bulb. The next time it turned on, it had a huge blue blob smack-dab in the center of the screen. I figured the bulb had burned, but waited to replace it since it had just been replaced for the first time and was less than two months old.
This week I ordered a replacement bulb and was dismayed to find out it didn't fix the problem. A quick search on these forums showed that it might actually be a systemic problem with the model. I'm hoping someone can confirm that that's actually my problem, and offer any advice about what to do. The TV was purchased new in January 2006, so it's just about six years old.

(I get a choice of either a in-store gift card or an e-coupon, both with no expiry dates on them) for my 50" Grand WEGA 3LCD Rear Projection (KDF-E50A10). Any opinions on my deal? Should I contact them back? Thanks.:)
Could you PM me what you wrote, and to whom? I'd love a $1050 credit.

A quick search on these forums showed that it might actually be a systemic problem with the model. I'm hoping someone can confirm that that's actually my problem, and offer any advice about what to do.

Sounds like a damaged optical block is your problem. Sony had a replacement program in place for the problem with these RPTVs. Sony's initial exchange/replacement program for this model set sets ended last October. Now, as I understand it, the best approach to getting help for your TV is through the "I Have a Defective Sony TV" Facebook page. The page contains info on how to ask for an offer from Sony for your out of warranty TV. You can see a variety of offers that have been made to owners there.
(I too would love to get a $1050 credit for my set.)
calitoronto 01-19-12, 10:48 PM Hey tsigo, I can't PM to your inbox because I have less than 5 posts lol. But, here's what I did...
I guess I was offered a $1050 credit because of my television model I have (50" Grand WEGA 3LCD Rear Projection (KDF-E50A10)). I think Sony offer people these kind of deals depending on what kind of model and manufacture date you have, like what some users said earlier. All I did was call them up by tell them that you have blue blobs/ yellow discolouration on your television and tell them that you heard about the Sony TV Exchange Program and ask if they know anything about that? After that, they will ask you for some basic information and then ask you for your serial number and manufacturers date (which is found behind your television set) and where you purchased your unit from. Once they gather the information, they will send you an email for you to send in photos of blue blobs/ yellow discolouration, serial/ manufacturer's number, and original receipt. (Sending in a picture of the original receipt is optional, the sticker behind your television is most important). I hope that helps, cheers!
Edit: I forgot, but here's the number I used to contact Sony. 1 877 899-7669

LOL, I was just going to ask for the number! Thanks!
I just noticed that that is the number for Sony Canada...won't work for me. Thanks anyway.
calitoronto 01-19-12, 11:18 PM Sorry I forgot again to say its a Canadian number. However, you can still contact them using the US number and skip all the computerized messages straight to the live operator lol and just tell them your issue and stuff!:)
I am wondering if anyone here has had this experience.
My question: Is there a direct relationship between the amount of everyday use of my E50A10 and the appearance of the optical block issue?
...
Has anyone had the same experience over time?
Our TV hasn't had a significant break since the issue developed, however the blue blob has morphed over time, changing shape and position and sometimes it seems more intense than at other times. I haven't been able to correspond this to amount of use, specific viewing material, etc.
When submitting for my replacement, I did find it harder to take a good picture for the requirement to demonstrate the effect than the first picture I took and posted here several months back. I think it may be that the whole screen is now affected to some extent so that the more dramatically affected areas actually don't seem as bad in comparison as they did initially when some of the screen was still unaffected.
Follow-up: Just got off the phone with them. Their offer was a KDL46EX500 for $515 plus tax, or a KDL55BX520 for $675 plus tax.
The KDL55BX520 won't fit in the space I have so it's down to the 46. Has anyone taken a similar offer? I'm assuming the sets are refurbs?

I don't think any of the sets we've been offered are refurbs! (Mine was brand new!!)
Also, I think you can ask about other models/sizes if you want something else.
Today SONY contacted me (they do so every week/10 days or so) asking if I had made a decision. I inquired about the option of receiving a credit like calitoronto and they said no. Something to do with the exchange program is only run out of their facility in Fort Myers and that a credit is not an option.
They knocked another $60 off my price to cover the cost of the bulb I bought trying to fix the problem, so it was $455 plus tax for the 46EX500, which I accepted. FedEx'd the papers on Monday night, they received them Tuesday morning, and they shipped the TV today, expected to be delivered Tuesday. Pretty good.
arhusker 02-10-12, 07:08 PM Hi. Hoping someone on here can help me out. I have the same blue blob issue and contacted Sony. I was offered two 'exchange options'
KDL55BX520 $675.00 + local sales tax
KDL46EX500 $515.00 + local sales tax
I noticed some other people on the forum were able to receive additional options if they asked. I just got off the phone with Sony and they told me that those were my only options and that I couldn't speak to anyone else because I was at the 'highest escalation point.' Anyone know how I can get another offer? I really would like a better model that these offers.
This whole situation is frustrating and killing my desire to purchase any Sony product in the future.
Thanks for your help! :)

I was offered a 46NX700, but that is going on 2 years ago now. I believe the EX500 is that old as well.

Did you try calling back and asking again? (Don't mention a case # or anything they might've given you the first time.)
If not, check the earlier posts for the facebook page that people were using.
arhusker 02-11-12, 02:54 PM Thanks for the advice. I check ed the facebook page after I posted last night. Someone there suggested I email sonylistens again with a request for specific models. I did. We will see how it goes.
Thanks!
leaperk 03-07-12, 08:11 AM Please update the thread with the latest Sony offers I am very curious
I see the traffic on this thread has slowed down considerably. It could be that Sony is now requiring terms of their offers be kept confidential.
I saw the following offers posted elsewhere for a KDS-50A2000 SXRD
55BX520 $575
46EX521 $475
46EX723 $580
55NX720 $995
