OK, I upgraded to FW 1.6.3 and gave the TiVX another go. Streaming .ts files over NFS from a parttition greater than 2TB now works, the file sizes >4GB also seem to work, but playback is jerky in panning and action scenes, so much so that it is still unwatchable in HD playback.

I suspect that this is down to the HW capabilities of the TiVX rather than the streaming of my network as that is 1Gb copper.

I'm creating .iso's from some of my DVDs (paid for :) ) and copy them to the TViX...The .iso plays almost perfect, it's just that the picture is too small - I have a 50" screen but the picture played from the TViX (fw 1.6.3) is only about 32" centered on the screen!

If I mount and play the same .iso on my PC it fills the screen from side-to-side OK.

I'm using DVDshrink...Is it me doing something wrong during iso creation or is it the TViX??
Other .iso's (not created by me) plays OK, full screen width.

Please, anyone!

"Hi,

when will the english version of 1.6.3 be ready?"

Reply to your question is as below.

We found several bugs with 1.6.3 and we are fixing it and adding some more features.
1.7.x will be release within 2 weeks hopefully.

(ignorance mode on) What is H2M? Also, are we talking HDTV transports ?

josex

H2M=HDTV2MPEG

HDTV2MPEG doesn't cut the MPEG correctly and the Twix can't handle these errors and stops.
So yes HDTV works fine when streaming but only good clean files. Most of my files work fine.

Perhaps these error can be fixed with some tool.

TPeterson

Yes, H2M cuts leave discontinuities in the file...but these are Transport Streams after all, which are designed to survive such disruptions invisibly, and other players (e.g., DViCo's own FusionHDTV) play right through them. So should the TViX player do. I've sent DViCo a sample to work on, so maybe they'll fix this in a subsequent firmware.

Finally i got some response from Tvix support.

This may be interesting reading for you folks :)

-----------
Can you make the Tvix to work with Macintoxh OSX with the LAN streaming part?

Thank you!

-----------

Hello,

Yes, you can do that, but not current release.
1.7.x will be release within 2 weeks hopefully.
With this version, we support NFS server connection for the better network performance.
(we will supply simple NFS server so users can easily set without cumbersome settings)
When we release 1.7.x, we will also put some instruction for Mac OSX.

After this release we also plan that users can copy to or from TVIX through FTP server on TVIX.
(We just build our internal build.)

Thanks,

-----------

Sounds great with the FTP part :)
Tvix is getting better and better.

Thanks - I've been using VideoReDo (generally works, sometimes I have problems). So, just to clarify, streaming HD .TS files over a network is in fact working now?

I've been dying for a box that will play DVDs and more importantly, HD .TS files over a network, and so far every box comes up short, notably in the HD .TS department

Anyone here have a MYHD card and TVIX 5000 that would care to comment on PQ between the two?

I would have thought that because this is hardware that the PQ would have remained the same from firmware to firmware release on TVIX, but I don't think that is the case. I've gone back and compared some of the previous firmware updates to the later ones, and I see PQ differences in each release. 1.6.3 for me doesn't look so good. I also think the 720P to 1080i conversion isn't that great from the panning perspective on film material. Viewing on Sony 34" XBR960.

I used to have a HiPix and that card rocked. I've got a MYHD on order from DC, so I plan to do some comparison on this soon myself.

Streaming over the network with 1.6.3 does in fact work very well, and VideoRedo 'fixed' material works just fine too.

TPeterson
06-30-06, 07:07 PM
I have both but haven't much experience with older fw on the TViX. With latest fw, PQ seems similar to me (viewing on 34" Sony also) between the two. Certainly I've never seen better PQ than that of the MyHD card. I'm surprised also that you find differences with fw on the TViX (and that it's visible on the 34" CRT, which I've come to realize has lower effective resolution than even 1280 x 720).

Anybody had trouble with pixel shimmer when using dvi @720 or 1080? I thought it was the cable but it doesn't show up on my 2 computer monitors, yet I see it on a 50" samsung dlp and my sanyo plv-z2 projector? I have been getting used to component but it drives me crazy to know it could look better with dvi!!

josex

Nope havent seen it on my 90" screen with a 3foot DVI cable. Most likely a cable issue.
Some devices are better at rebuilding the DVI signal when the quality is poor. That could be why you don't see the problem with your computer monitors.
Try a shorter cable.

When I press that button I get a popup question with "Are you sure you want to delete ....". That is when a file is marked, of course.
Is it the same button? Mine is the one with a little camera on it.

I've just bought a Tvix M5000u, and very nice it is too (even though the manual is in french and I had to download the english one which suggests it's a M5100u even though the screen shot and pdf name says M5000... hmmm). I've had no major problems and it is definitely an improvement over my old Buffalo Linktheater.

Couple of points though if anyone knows:-

1. The manual says "or transfer files from another USB device such as a thumb drive". Now this, to me, suggests you don't actually need a PC to transfer files, just a USB drive will do (to transfer to the internal hard drive). If this is so then how do you do it? If not then does anyone know if they plan to support it? I heard that the Linux drivers cannot write to NTFS drives, but with the new HD tuner add-on coming out (which allows you to record), surely this isn't a problem anymore. Esp considering the mini drive version (2.5") can do it

2. The manual says just put a picture called "tvix.jpg" into a folder and it will change the background when you enter the folder. Doesn't seem to work for me at all. I have used various sized pictures downloaded from the net (smaller and bigger than the recommended size) with no success. Is there an option to switch on or something?

Other than that it is very nice. Everyone buy one :)

Cheers

Just picked up a M5000 , and have to say that apart from some niggles with non mac connectivity ( got it to share with the pc laptop though ) and the lack of current , up to date firmware on the American or EU sites , I am very pleased with it. Just streamed a 1080i MPEG2 HD TS stream from the share without one stutter or break. PQ was very nice. My only real gripe is that my USB bus powered HD does not work on it , or my card reader ( 6 in 1 ) just locks the device up. Maybe later firmware will fix this. The best news that we all should rejoice with is the news of the FTP server being included in the near future. This makes it one hell of a nice toy ( please dont mention the KISS DP600 to me!!!! ) anyway... hello to all , and Im glad to be a member of this fine forum , and to meet you all.

Don't suppose the firmware uses USB copying from a key to the internal HD? Considering HDTV is now supported you would thought that would be easy enough.

So noone has problems with the tvix.jpg folder functionality? If not then is it "tvix.jpg", or something else?

I'm in the same boat with a D-Link DSM-G600. SMB works with TViX (and Zensonic) but it's not cooperating via UPnP. Thanks for the links. Now I've at least got some of my homework done. :D

It appears that UPnP may indeed involve NFS, although the two entities are different in scope. (For those, not mitch, who've yet to start their homework, NFS (and SMB/"Samba") deal only with file transfer protocol while UPnP is a higher-level protocol for handling inter-device network communications, which may in turn be handled via NFS or even SMB--IIUC what I've read so far.)

There's been some talk about a new HW version of the M5000 - the M5100 - based on EM8622 chipset. Anyone know anything about the truth in this rumour? Releasedate etc?

The reason is ofcourse interest in support for H.264/VC-1
I have been looking for specs to the EM8621 chipset (in the current M5000) without luck.
According to Sigma Design specs the EM8620L chipset does NOT support H.264/VC-1, however it's bigger brother EM8622 does! So what about their sibling in between?

oferlaor

even if it is true, it will take ages for the Sigma designs SDK to be ready. The chips have been out for ages, but no reports of any working software for them yet.

I would try to focus on trying to convert MKV files into WMV somehow.

well it seems that the issues with the IcyBox( NAS ) is the mount point for the shares..

It hard codes the mount point as " /mnt/IDE1/'your shares here' " while the tvix want " /'the share here' "

I checked the mont point via the Mac , and the NFS mounts at /mnt/IDE1/****** so thats def the issue.

Untill The Tivx allows us to chage the server/ share path in the preferences , im pretty much up a creek without a paddle.

After a whole night re installing , cloneing , moving my OS around , I got my main G5 ( quad ) to serve a NFS stream to the TivX .. And very good it is too.

If anyone wants info , just use NFS Manager ( google it ) to export the server . Just remember to create the TVIXHD1 folder at the root level of you main drive (/) and share that. Only one issue , it seems that the TVIX or MAC cant resolve symbolic links , this makes it rather tedious as you need to copy all your stuff to you main volume and not keep it on another drive...

more later.

GB

Just found out that if you create a symbolic link of another volume or folder that contains your files and name that tvixhd1 , the tvix has no problems resolving it. =Just dont put the symbolic links IN the genuine tvixhd1 folder.

wireless is uselessDon't really care about streaming. But if I could FTP files to the internal hard drive over wireless (hopefully at the fully 802.11g speed) then would be better than having to haul the Tvix to a computer, or a laptop to it (although the promised USB key transfer to HD would also be good). This is mainly because I really don't want to setup a wired LAN to the 2 Tvixs that I keep upstairs in the bedrooms.

I just upgraded from the original firmware to the latest and now transport streams play. The strange thing is now I dont get any audio from Star Wars?

It would be awesome if Tvix could add seamless transport stream playback of movies split across multipe chunks without a pause when it loads the next segment.

Additionally hitting the chapter next/prev button should move to the next chunk.
I have many TS movies split into 60-150 chunks named sequentially such as:

Top.Gun.1080i.0001.ts
.
Top.Gun.1080i.0150.ts

I would assume many others here would also want this functionality.
The TVix has developed into a crown jewel. On the other hand the Mediagate has stagnated. I have the Tvix (looking to buy a second unit + 2 HDTV add on tunres), the MG35, Buffalo LinkTheater, IoData LinkPlayer and the tvix is the best.

Then please mail their support and ask for it. (Or use the "My Q&A" on their web site") This is their answer to my request for same/similar feature....

Recently, I recieved several request about this fuction specially from Sweden users and we are considering about this. (but not sure, I am not the one making decision).

So, it seems like nagging about it will help

Other mails also indicated that Shoutcast support is planned for. Something I would really like.
The Tvix gets better each day! Now if only the tuner add on could come for the swedish market.....

I know that most people buy the TVix for the”movies” and playback of films.
Any one out there that is equally interested in the MP3 playback?

I like the sound and the possibility to browse my files on my network drives, but the GUI for this is really bad. No possibility to browse your files while playing, to see some basic ID3 tag information or some play list options.

Most portable MP3 players have better functionality than TViX.

My question on this subject on “My Q&A” was answered by.

1.7.x will be release within 2 weeks hopefully.
With this version, we have implemented FF/RW for audio files.
You can also browse the file while you playing audio files.

As if the functionality to jump 10 sec in a song is the biggest problem, and I have not got the “browse while playing to work”
I hope that now when most of the biggest problems with movie playback are solved that the next FW will be an upgrade on MP3 playback.

I downloaded the NFS manager but i dont understand **** to be honest ;)
Any1 up for a newbie guide with OSX connectivity, last post i did said they would release a manual on how to connect with Mac OSX, although i have'nt spotted one yet. Thanks

Problem solved! =)
Followed the new guide (FAQ - After purchase) Had to restart thou but then NFS share found my folder

I'm currently beta testing this 50/60Hz functionality. (I'm one of the elsewhere mentioned Swedes :) )
I hope I'm allowed to share this

I must say I am very impressed with Dvico, their response has been *incredibly* good with me.

Could anyone share why exactly the 8621L does not do h264? Product spec says it does "MPEG-4.10 (H.264) BP@L3, MP@L4.0 and HP@L4.0". But maybe that is just parts of the standard??? I am a bit confused about the h264 variants, I must say.

That datasheet applies to 8620L *SERIES* chips, not the 8620/21. Only EM8622L supports H264. Not sure if that applies to QT-H264, AVI-H264 and/or MKV-H264.

I have reported this as a bug a few days ago, and are having a discussion with Eric over on Tvix regarding this! Thing is that I never tried to hit the zoom button, so I did not connect my aspect problem with your "zoom button hitting". Clever me! :p

I have this aspect error on perhaps one in ten or one in fifteen files.
I guess you have have set "16:9 display" in the Tvix set-up?

Apparently, the files that I am having problem with are encoded wrong according to Dvico. I am not sure if I will swallow that just yet. (How come they playes well from the HTPC?) Maybe the HTPC software does some magic to it, but then Dvico should be able to do the same...

Does anyone know of a program that shows the flags of a stream/file and that one can trust? Preferably linux, but windows is ok as well.

The TViX (and all Sigma-based players) are more sensitive to stream errors than are the better PC players. I gather that this is partly from the fact that the Sigma ARM CPU is only 166-MHz clocked and partly from lack of polish in the Sigma-supplied MPEG handler.

I like the (free) TSReader Lite (http://www.coolstf.com/tsreader/index.html) sw for analyzing TS files. I don't know if there's a Linux version.

In this case it seams that the files has a black bars for a 4:3 set but still are flagged as 16:9 (according to Dvico), which gives a vertical squeeze. So it is not a stream error, but the way to treat the aspect flags I guess.

more sensitive to stream errors than are the better PC playersI had an avi that "blipped" on one scene and then put the sound out of sync for the rest of the program. This was on 5 different PCs (I am a programmer and have lots of tech). Running directly off both my Tvix M5000us it played fine (both with internal hard drive). Even my BLT with an external hard drive played it fine.

Don't forget the hardware in these things are dedicated to playing video files. I've heard of Mac Minis and much more powerful PCs (Mhz wise) stuttering now and again on SD stuff. It's a bit like having a PC without a decent graphics card. Basically is rubbish. My old PC with a 9800 card in it would blitz my new one (which is a 64bit dual core effort and has 2gb of memory) at games if it just had some Intel motherboard graphics card effort. Luckily it doesn't though. Nice for creating video though. Good olde DivX (or maybe VidX, can't remember now) with their dual core codec :)

Hi,

Is anyone else thinking of the same as me regarding the tvix.jpg functionality?
I.e. to put each movie in a separate folder and there put a tvix.jpg picture which will be used as background.
One can then have both a DVD Cover image and a short description and get a lot nicer UI and better functionality than the default.

My questions is what program shall I use to create these background images?
There are several programs that downloads pictures and descriptions from IMDB and alike but I haven't found any that can export to JPG image, only to HTML.
One example is Ant Movie collector, which is free.
There are also some HTML to JPG converters but I haven't found any that works well and actually outputs the image size I specify.

Suggestions anyone?

Use Irfanview to capture your screen showing the desired image and save as JPG after resizing as you wish.

Crivens
07-28-06, 09:19 AM
I use PSP8 (cost me £10 from one site - about $18). But I have used MS paint with no problems. Just remember to save at exactly the right size (720x480 I believe) or it won't work (ie. the manual is wrong). Note that (on a UK PAL system at least) some of the edges are cut off.

Oh, and right click on the image in IMDB and select "Save Picture As...". Save the image somewhere. Hopefully there will be a jpeg (JPG) save option so you can save straight to tvix.jpg. If not then save as a bitmap (bmp) or gif and open in MS paint then save in jpg format as tvix.jpg. Works fine for me. As for grabbing pictures (so can grab from DVD player software) then either use the print screen (then paste in paint) or use image grabbing software such as used by PSP to capture an image. Note that Tvix doesn't have outlines around the white words used on the menus so don't use too much very light colours otherwise is hard to read.

Anyone found a way around this, or know if they plan on changing this?

I've used jofa idea about putting each movie on separate folder with a dedicated tvix.jpg.
Looks great when surfing the TVIX browser and selecting which movie to watch :-)

About the resolution, 720x480, if you put a higher resolution, the player will display it correctly but it will take more time to display it on the screen.

Anyone come up against very slow loading time when selecting divx files?
The player display the divx file name on the screen and only after 25~ seconds the file starts to play.
This occurrence happens on all of my divx.
TS files works immediately without any delay.

About the resolution, 720x480, if you put a higher resolution, the player will display it correctly but it will take more time to display it on the screenNot on my european M5000U with the latest firmware. Nothing but 720x480 works regardless of how long you leave it. The manual says it can be bigger but it takes longer to load. The support email I got back confirmed that it had to be 720x480 and no other size as the manual is wrong. If yours is working then either you have a beta FW or it is different outside europe (assuming you are in the US).

I also emailed them about allowing customisable colours for each menu text (otherwise light backgrounds make it hard to see the words) or have an outline around the text. Hopefully they will respond with an upcoming fix as they said they will with the USB key to internal HD patch (hopefully soon).

Divx files normally take 5-10 secs to start on mine. This is off the internal HD (7200rpm). I assume this is because of the increased compression on a DivX file. Plus it is probably caching a load of stuff to allow decent fast forwarding, which seems to be a problem with a lot of other players. My Buffalo Linktheater for example is pretty much unusable trying to fast forward on a DivX file. You might as well just pick a random start point in the file.

Anyone tried to modify DIVCO's firmware with some interesting features?

Crivens
07-31-06, 12:19 PM
Would be nice to have a few extra features. Things like thumbnails would be good. Could even do it for video. If it's too much processing then with an internal hard drive then it just needs to work out thumbnails once. Or leave it to us to use something similar to tvix.jpg (same name with .jpg perhaps?). That would be tops.

If they made the firmware open source then I would give it a go. I'm a programmer for a living, so should be able to make my way around it (if they gave us the code). Probably nuttely complicated with comments in Korean :( But still, mucking around with things could be cool :)

I got a reply from their support for the question regarding outlined or different colour text on a menu. He said he has put it on the request list but doesn't know if it will be done or not as no-one else has requested this. Hopefully it will be done as it is relatively simple, but if a total annoyance (not that bad unless you really want the light backdrop) then add to my request to give it more weight. Easiest method I can think of off the top of my head would be to either outline everything in black, or allow a text file in each folder with the colour as it's name. eg. 255-255-255.col. Bit of a frig, but a lot faster that creating a menu for it and building in options into the firmware. Either that or use the first pixel in the tvix.jpg file as the colour of the text for that menu. You then just insert the pixel yourself, and no-one will notice on the Tvix backdrop (or don't show the 1st line). Simple.

Oh and that 5-10 seconds was for an episode. I tried doing it for a film and it can be upto about 20 seconds to start a DivX file.

I've just updated the firmware on my M-5000 from 1.3.8 to 1.7.3. I am now having playback (suttering and audio/video sync) problems via the USB ports. Onboard HDD and network streaming playback perfectly. With the previous firmware I was using, USB playback was fine and network streaming was poor.

Just got a responce now from Eric (DVICO) regarding recommand cluster size.
I asked him what is the recommanded cluster size for all the devices conntected to the player.
I followed oferlaor advice and changed my cluster size to 64K due to the large size of files that the player is dealing with.

Eric answered that 4K is the dev team recommandation because of hardware limits, they have heard some complaint's about stuttering video when cluster size is set to 64K.
in addition, he said that "the hardware limit is internal memory size and CPU limit(no mmu)."

Anyone came up against any problems with 64K clusters?

I read somewhere a long time ago that this feature was disabled due to the "complicated problem" that the Tvix will never know if the network drive is there or not and they had some problems with that. So their "solution" was to remove this :p

ThanX tinhan, oferlaor,

With the new 1.7.3 firmware, I only have stuttering when playing back .ts files from USB HDD Enclosure (Vantec Nextstar). I previously had no issues playing back videos from the very same drive prior to the upgrade. As I am very happy with the improved network support, I'll stick with the latest patch and hopefully the USB issues are resolved the next time around.

I tried defragmenting the USB drive as suggested, but when I brought up the drive in Perfect Disk, it was pretty much a single block as I copied 400GB of content to the drive and left if there w/o moving files in and out of the drive.

As I said before, playback from onboard HDD is fine. Both onboard and external HDD have 64K cluster sizes.

ThanX,

Ben

Thanks for the info on the unit so far. I have a few questions that i couldn't find the answers to in the docs... maybe i just missed it!

1. What's the maximum capacity for an internal drive that the M5000 can support?

2. Can the unit function as a NAS device - i.e. create network shares that can be copied to? or is the only way to get files on the internal drive to hook it up via USB?

3. Can you plug an external DVD drive into one of the M5000's USB ports to play back directly from a DVD?

4. What OS is running on the device? can you telnet into it and control anything?

I'd love to be able to put a large HD inside the unit (like 500 GB), create an SMB share on the device, mount the share from my PC and rip content to the M5000 directly. I would also like the M5000 to stream media from my existing SMB and NFS shares.

Is this possible? I'm fairly certain that it can stream from NFS and SMB shares, but have no idea if it can be used as a share itself.

2. No, it cannot operate as NAS.
3. Will not recognize a DVD drive via USB port.
4. Unix

probably will never stream data to other devices
we are waiting for FTP upload of data to be played from it's drive.
I don't believe any rippers support FTP output, so it will have to be PC ripped and then ftp'd to the TVIX.

Yeah, i don't want it to ever stream data to other devices, i just want an easy way to get data to its internal drive while attached to my network, not a PC. If you can't really manage its content while it's on your network as a stand-alone device, i don't see a big benefit to having its own hard drive - seems like a pain to manage the content.

FTP support would certainly help. At least you could push data to the drive and hopefully delete it when you are done!

Once the file is on the tvix, the tvix would have no knowledge of the source file (it's not synchronizing files for you), so you could do what you want. You just can't do it while it's copying.

Doesn't surprise me that the daemons aren't running. With the NSLU2 it was a matter of someone finding a backdoor web page that started the telnet daemon...

What i would like to see more than telnet access is a full samba implementation. It's not like it's hard to do or anything - very easy to compile/cross-compile and get running on any unix platform. Then if I had telnet access i could create SMB shares and getting data to the internal drive would be easy. come to think of it, they probably have samba as that's how they are most likely connecting to external shares...

Thanks

Well before we can find that we'd have to find the backdoor to enable the webserver... :)

Seriously, me thinks this is a secure thingy. It may well be that there are means to open it up, but thats likely a hardware configuration in that case. And I did not spot any obvious jumper when I had it open. No "Free sex and beer" jumper either.

I do not have any harddrive in mine anyway, I play all my material from my linux server using nfs.

HA... lol

true enough. maybe there's a backdoor in the UI somewhere ;)

I posted a Q&A to them to show my interest in this, however i think i'm going to end up doing what you do and just stream data via NFS from my linux server and from my windows machine (using the freely available windows services for unix).

However, now it seems like this device is no better than my Roku HD1000. If only they didn't discontinue them...

Just got an email back from Tvix support. I sent the following:-

Just an idea, but do you plan on using a thumbnail view for videos?

Perhaps, if it is too slow, then could you use a similar idea to the tvix.jpg file to produce wallpapers. For example, if every video file had a jpg file with the same name (say fixed at 50x50 pixels, so is fast to load), then could show this image as it's thumbnail. If no image then just show a standard video picture.

Already I think the M5000U is the best player around, but with a video thumbnail feature it would be a "killer" feature, if you know what I mean. Would be great, and be a similar look a HD-PC.

Also I am looking forward to the 5101. Do you have a release date for the UK?

And they replied with:-
Actually, we are talking internally similar idea. However, I can not tell you we will implement or not. I am not the one who make a decision. ;-)

About 5101,
We do not have a schedule currently. We hope we can release end of thrid quarter or fourth quarter at least. This is becase of chip vender schedule.

Good stuff about the thumbnails. Hopefully they will do it would definitely improve the GUI no end over just about every other HD player out there (non-HDPC).

Hmmm. Just noticed that the answer included a winky smiley after the saying he wasn't the one who made the decisions. I would normally translate that to mean that maybe he is and just isn't allowed to admit it, or he has some pull. C'mon matey say it's a "do or die" mod. :) Not quite, but the Tvix's already nice interface would be definitely at the top of the bundle with this.

hmmm

To buy now, or wait a bit for the 5101...that's what i'm wondering. Although the 5000 isn't perfect, it does seem like it will do what i need it to do today: stream hi-def .ts files, play back my ripped dvd (ifo/vob) collection, and play back dvix files. Any thoughts?

Well, I love it (both of them). But I must admit the 5101 would be tempting if I was wanting to buy now (bought a couple of months ago). Considering they said they were working on the idea of using wireless with the M5000U (probably with a dongle, and again only for FTP, not streaming) then I would say it's really likely the 5101 will have wireless built in. Now fair enough it won't be as good a network link, but then nice and easy to FTP files over without wires. And even though they update quite often, and actually answer emails with a day or two (whilst taking into account what you said, unlike my Buffalo linktheater) you have to wonder if they will continue for long on the M5000U once the 5101 is out. On the other hand if it's just a couple of hardware changes then the software might be almost identical.

You could also buy the M5000U with an internal HD now, considering the 5101 might not even be out this year, then put the HD in a 5101 when it comes out. Cheaper, and you can still use the M5000U to stream from network or USB drive.

Thanks for your input.

Not planning on getting an internal HD in the M5000 as it isn't very useful to me when the device is standalone on the network. I can't get any content to it and it can't be used by any other devices on the network.

I'm hoping that the software for the 5101 will be the same as for the 5000 with some tweaks to support the new chip. That would greatly increase the odds that the product would be stable out of the gate.

As for wireless, well, that isn't relevant to my setup - i've got Cat 5e run everywhere in my house w/ a gigabit switch. Would be nice if the 5101 had gigabit too. And if they made the 5101 an NFS server as well as a client, that would be a major benefit - A NAS device that can stream your media files.

if the 5000 were significantly less expensive, i would pick one up just to hold me over, but at $320 + shipping, it's a bit pricey to be outdated in 2 months.

I can't get any content to it and it can't be used by any other devices on the networkWell, dunno if it was in the last patch or the next one, but you are supposed to be able to ftp files to the internal HD on a network, and they are working on a patch to copy files from a USB drive onto the internal HD.

Yeah, it is a bit pricey considering an upgrade version is around the corner. And with the H264 ability it would beat all the other non-HDPC media players out there for file support.

FTP is weak. I mean, it's a unix based device - NFS support should be there (both client AND server). Also, SMB client & server is a no-brainer as well. Forcing you to use USB devices or FTP to get content onto its internal drive, well, that's not very robust.

I will just live with my HTPC a while longer - it's flakey when i put it into standby - having trouble finding the network when it wakes up... maybe i'll just leave it on 24x7 and wait and see what the 5101 is like when it ships!

Personally I'm not too worried about the whole "transfer to internal HD", my experiences with transfering HD films of perhaps 10-15GB onto a device with a slow CPU (like the cheap NAS boxes out there) is that this takes too long time, and before the tx is done, I have gone to sleep without watching that movie I wanted to see.
I can certainly understand that this can be very important for some people, especially if the content to transfer is divx, mp3 or even (perhaps) dvd's.
Gigabit wouldn't help one bit, it is the CPU power and the harddisk interface that limits the speed.

I will definately get the 5101, and I knew when I bought this box last month, that it would be superceeded by a better one. But I figured that if I did not buy it, the new box would take much longer time to appear. :)

i wont be putting a disk in the 5000 but i would like to stream movies from the NAS, they will be the (proabbly) in the usual vob format.

does the gui allow easy selection of movies when in this format?
is it good enough to stream from the network?
anyone know a compact amp, as this is for a bedroom and a smallish HDTV?

Hi all -

Apologies if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it.

I've just got my M-5000u, and want to upgrade it with the latest firmware. I can't for the life of me find instructions on how to do this if you don't have an internal hard drive (I'm just streaming straight from an Infrant ReadyNAS NV).

Any help/guidance would be appreciated!

i have upgraded the firmware by putting the firmware on a usb memory stick(thumb drive) and plugging that into the tvix. you get to the usb memory stick by going to file mode and hitting the repeat button on the remote, then the right arrow til you get to the usb drive icon. then highlight the firmware file and hit "ok".
has worked every time.

"Hello,

I regret to say that we will not support these service(telnet, ssh or shell access),. We want also port SAMBA or NFS server, however, the problem is HW limit. We need more memory to do this.

Currently, we do not have any plan to port NFS server or SAMBA server.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Yes-it will play back DVD's flawlessly from a ReadyNAS. I rip in file mode including the IFO's for full menu support. In fact it will flawlessly stream HDTV transport streams/xvid's/etc... over the network also with the 1.7.3 firmware. I have been able to watch a HD movie (using NFS, not SMB) while also having 2 other computers writing to the ReadyNAS simultaneously. BTW-I have 3x750 Perpendiculars in my ReadyNAS.

Depending on your timeframe they will be releasing the 5101 which adds H.264 decoding if that is important to you. Plus maybe several other features I think. The nice thing is that they will probably keep releasing updates for the 5000 since they share codebases and the hardware will be almost identical. This reminds me they still have to release the GPL source code.

BTW-Forget wireless for streaming HD. Its just not up to the task-stick with wired networks. You also wont have to worry about someone snooping into your private collection.

First day i picked up my Tvix the display was not functional.
Returned it the next day, they confirmed the problem and i got a new one, yey!

Yesterday, around 2,5 months from my purchase the fan started to go wild.
Returned to dealer they said the have to send it back to Tvix because of the fan design.

Well yes the Tvix is mainly plastic and you know what to expect but i dint for once thoght that the fan would stop working after such a short time, i mean it hasnt been on for 2,5 month straight.

My guesses are i have to replace the fan every 3:rd month or so from now on, they should have made the fansize bigger to avoid this.

Worst of all is they will have my Tvix for 2 weeks now when i have been addicted to it.. =)

I doubt you need the fan if you dont have a harddrive inside, i had my fan set to lowest even with hdd in and its hardly not spinning and the machine wasnt that hot...allthough i usually have it in normal mode.
Its the hdd that makes the tvix warm (or just maybe the internal powersupply helps a little).

Hi all

Just got my new tvix 5000 and put an internal 250gb hard drive into it. Loaded all my content into it, mainly a mix of downloaded xvids and dvd divx5 rips. All the downloaded content works flawlessly, but the dvd divx rips will not play (720x576 pal 25fps divx5.0 mp3 192kb standard divx settings for home theatre). I experimented with my ripping program, magic dvd ripper, and tried different combos of video and audio bitrate but nothing worked. I then tried an xvid rip using standard settings for 720p layer5, wouldn't work. I then tried a straight dvd backup to create the ts files, this played back flawlessly and worked like a dvd disc (impressive as).

My question is, the info given on codecs and parameters is not in depth, does anyone know the parameter range for the codecs you can use when ripping dvd's?

If you read the thread you can see that I had the same problem.
They key issue here is what is "newest fw"?
There are some people who have received beta fw for various reasons and the screensaver is in later fw than 1.7.3.

While trying to decide which media server to buy, I followed the forums of some other devices (Modix, Pixel Magic, etc). They all seemed to have issues that would be addressed by new firmware only to have new issues introduced. The TVIX seemed to be stable and I didn't want to be a beta tester.

Long story short, I got it and I love it! It does everything as advertised. I have installed a 300GB drive which works fine, I have plugged in external USB hard drives, which work fine. I even plugged in my Archos 402 and played videos stored there. Photos stored on thumb drives can be displayed without a problem.

I installed TVIX Netshare and after I found the application "Junction" I was able to set it up to stream HD content from any of the drives/folders attached to my computer (internal and external) flawlessly across my LAN cable. BTW, I had never heard of NTFS Junctions. The USB drives attached to my computer work exactly as though I had them attached directly to the TVIX. No need to haul them downstairs.

Next test was to try the Panasonic HD-PLC ethernet adapters to see if I could stream HD video over my home wiring. SUCCESS! The host computer is upstairs and my TVIX and HDTV are downstairs and I can stream HD with no flaws! The Panasonic solution is more expensive than wireless but easier than hard wiring and IT WORKS!

Is there anything I would change? Yeah, I would like thumbnails for the photos and I would like a better way to play music in the background during slide shows, but I can't think of much else.

Other devices used: MediaMVP...very nice how it integrates with BeyondTV but doesn't play HD.
Philips Streamium...Nice interface, not HD, has some performance issues but I will continue to use it for its wireless capability. Both of these served my needs well but nothing like the TVIX.

Forget wireless-its useless. Doesnt have enough bandwidth. Moving the content on the internal hard drive is currently limited to USB. The next fw update is supposed to add the ability to move files over the network. If you plan on moving lots of content your best bet is to connect the hard drive to your PC and move the files onto the drive and then install the HD into the TVIX. Thats what I just did to move 500 GB onto it after struggling with USB which would have taken forever.

Or use a ReadyNAS and keep all of your content there and put a small hard drive onto the tvix.

You will be able to play vob/ifo/iso/wmv/mpg/ts/tp/avi/xvid/dixv without problem from both the HD and network(even HD files). However some of the more obtuse formats like real and flv files probably are not supported.

Their website has a matrix of audio/video codec support you can reference.

Yes the 5101 will add AVC decoding. Not sure what else.

Hi

It's not clear to me from the manual so can anyone clarify how to transfer files to the TViX from a ReadyNAS?

One other thing... If I stream from the NAS rather than a PC, is there any performance impact? qz3fwd suggests that there is support for NFS from the ReadyNAS.

Thanks

At the moment you cannot transfer files from the ReadyNAS to the tvix internal hard drive. You will have to wait for the next firmware release. You will need to connect the tvix using a usb cable to a PC and then move the files. That is why they gave you 2 power cords in the box.

Streaming off a ReadyNAS does not result in any performance hit and the ReadyNAS can stream multiple 1080 streams concurrently to several devices. The ReadyNAS is basically a linux system running on custom hardware and has NFS/CIFS/SMB filesystem support out of the box.

To use NFS just go to the txiv setup screen. Hit network. Change connection to NFS and enter the ReadyNAS IP address (You will get this from FrontView). Done.
Enjoy streaming DVD IFO/ISO's, HD XVID's, HD TS's over the network.

I have used both the ReadyNAS and connected to my workstation using NFS and saw no difference other than not having to keep my noisy, power hungry workstation running all the time while I leave my ReadyNAS on 24/7.

Hi!

Just got my Tvix 5000 unit. Hooked it up to my network, tried some playback from external HD and also playback from a ReadyNas X6.

I need to ask you people for some help (leaving for a trip this weekend, so hopefully there is an answer for me when I get back tomorrow).

Ok, here goes.
I am using the Samba network, added a new user (Tvixhd1) to the ReadyNas (I'm running User access security setting).
I have also set up one of the the network discs on the 5000 (using Samba) to the ReadyNas IP adress.
However, my problem is that I only see the tvixhd1 user's home directory. If I put files in there I can run them, but that is not what I want.
I want to access the Readynas's Media Share, i.e. the default share. That is where all my current pictures/videos/music are.

How do I move on from here in order to access the default media share...?

Oh... running latest FW, version 1.7.3.

Thanks for all your help.

Has anyone tested playback of FLAC files? I know it doesn't list them as being supported but I figured it would be worth checking out. That is about the only thing holding me back from getting one... I already have over 800 albums ripped to FLAC for my Squeezebox.

If it's not supported, can someone direct me to where I should request the feature? Tvix seems to be pretty responsive so maybe FLAC support can be added with a firmware update. Thanks.

Meenenator : Use NFS instead of Samba to connect to your Infrant-especially if you want glitch free HD streaming. I Only use NFS now which is built into the NAS. Currently the unit requires the tvixhd1 directory. Maybe someone knows how to get around this requirement? Maybe a sym link would work?

When playing xvid files with ac3 audio does the m-5000u pass the ac3 audio out the digital audio outputs? In other words does it output the ac3 audio just like it does dvds? From what I've read it does, but I would like for someone that has done this to say. This unit is getting very tempting.

yes, AC3 is passed on as DD like any DVD player.

Regarding the 5101, I think it may be quite a while before a stabile version of that unit will be available.

Thanks for feedback. Will look into NFS. However, the whole unit is pretty useless if I need to transfer all my media files to the home directory of the tvixhd1 user.

Maybe I could rename the media directory on the NAS to tvixhd1 (wasn't there something in a firmware release a while back?) until they unlock the hardcoded tvixhd1 limit (and actually can use any directory/share).

Will look into NFS as stated, but will also test the actual speed using Samba (I like the idea of not having a PC in the loop).

Any others ideas regarding the shares, and how to make them visible on the Tvix?

Am I to understand that files can NOT be transferred to and from the 5000 over the network??? My plan was to have downloads and such saved on a network share that would end up being the HDD on the 5000.

If this does NOT support network transfers this would be a major point against purchase. FYI, I'm also considering the lx350hd, the new wireless Eureka unit.

"Comments?"

Yeah, forget about WiFi for HDTV playback.

There is FTP access coming down the pike for transferring files to the TViX without using the USB connection...but that won't be as fast, since the TViX only supports 100 Mbps over ethernet v 480 Mbps over USB 2.0. Nevertheless, it will be an option that you could use for "background" copying of content from another LAN device to the TViX.

you might want to do a little research on the tvix website.

I agree that wifi for any streaming much less HiDef is not ideal. I like the wifi for file transfer. Saves the need for LAN cables, but I'll probably goes wired anyway.

I would have thought that the 5000 obtains a LAN IP address which would very easily facilitate file transfer over the LAN. Doing this by FTP seems to be unneccessarily complex.

So the LAN connection is for what? Accessing files on my computer for play on my TV via the 5000?

If so, that'll save me the price of an additional HDD I don't need.

That won't work I believe since NFS exports the real directory, not the symlink. Please put a feature request to Tvix support. I have done that, but more users complaining, the better chance of them going away from the hardcoded NFS path.

Just to understand some more... (I'm a bit confused today...)

The Readynas supports NFS and Samba.
Could I set up the Tvix to use NFS (and not use the Netshare program in XP), and still access the content on the ReadyNas?
You mentioned tvixhd1 directory. Is that the share name of the folder (using P9 firmware on the Readynas, (under services on the shares tab, I think))), or do you need to rename the media share to tvixhd1?

Could you elaborate this for us?

I was hoping to eliminate the PC for streaming from the NAS to the Tvix.

Yes-You have to setup the tvixhd1 share on the ReadyNAS and enable NFS in the shares tab and this will allow you to stream directly from the Infrant. Turn off the noisy PC and enjoy the show. No need to use the Netshare program, that is only for sharing drives on your PC and is a little NFS server. The Infrant has NFS support out of the box. All you have to do is add the tvixhd1 share and you are done. No need to mess with streaming services as I recall.

Alright, I read you... but still confused ;)
I'm assuming you are running the Nas in a "share" setting. I'm running a "User" setting.
As far as I can see, NFS is enabled, set to read-only.
I asked in the Infrant forum if I could name the media folder to "tvixhd1", and if that would do the trick.

So:
If I add "tvixhd1" to the media folder under services/Home Media Streaming Server, and have added the tvixhd1 user and PW, will that do the trick?

Sorry if I'm a bit slow today ;)

Update:
I added "tvixhd1" as the media folder under services/Home Media Streaming (in order to do that I needed to create a folder "tvixhd1" under the media share.
I changed the network settings on the 5000 to NFS, entered IP adress.
-> no luck

I then tried to add a "tvixhd1" share (under the add share tab). No go since I have a user named tvixhd1...
-> no luck

I have looked at the log-files (download all logs). I see there that the tvixhd1 user is able to log in. Also, the Readynas in not able to mount /tvixhd1 (rpc.mountd: refused mount request -> no export entry)

Update #2:
Ok, deleted the tvixhd1 user. Added a tvixhd1 share.
Voila... it worked. Got the tvixhd1 share and its content up.
But, not what I had in mind.
Is this it...? Must I move all my mediafiles to this share, just to see them?
There MUST be a better way to specify where the tvix shall stream from...

I'm not very experienced with Linux, but in Win2K it was possible to create a SHORTCUT to other drives and directories and place it inside the tvixhd1 folder. I took the external USB drive that I had been shuttling back and forth between my computer and the Tvix and now the tvix sees it across the network. I just don't know if this kind of SHORTCUT trick is available in Linux.

Nice to know...
I wasn't running Linux either (its the ReadyNas which does that, and it was just from a log-file).

I will try out the shortcut thinghy you describe. Does it work both in NFS (netshare) and Samba?
Sharing from local drives within my PCs is next. So thanks!

I have personally told them to jettison the hardcoded tvixhd1 share reqt. Notice that the PC NetShare server allows you to share any folder (except root) so it is possible to get rid of the hardcoded share. Lets hope the next fw version adds this and the external ATSC HDTV tuner option.

I tried to make a shortcut from C: and placed it in the folder the Netshare program uses.
No go in that department.

So I recon it is only possible in CIFS/Samba.

Hmmm? It would be nice if they jettisoned the hardcoded tvixhd1 share req.

Have a feeling that many streamers in fact have that type of req. Maybe it keeps the support/problems to a minimum?
If only I could find a streamer which supported all the codecs, and formats (ISO,IFO etc) and had UPNP. Maybe that is called a HTPC. LOL! ;)

I just wanted to verify the dimensions of this unit. Is it really just 5 inches wide by 7 inches high?

I have a space in the stereo cabinet for up to 7 inches width and about 10 inches height. Depth is no problem--it can go back far enough for receivers, VCRs, etc.

Will this unit fit?

Yeah-I have a HTPC right next to the Tvix. A Hiper case with an AMD 4400x2, 7600 video card with a 500 Gb HD & 2 GB RAM. The problem is that it makes too much noise with only 1 fan and even with TheaterTek I still find myself using the tvix almost exclusively. Just pick up the remote, hit the power button, and in a few seconds I am watching what I want. No waiting to boot (boots quickly though), logging in, firing up TT, grabbing the remote and playing my file. The only codec missing is H.264 although not much content is avaliable in this codec and I have no plans on reencoding to AVC.

Now if I need to do some serious work I am forced to fire up the HTPC and let it do its thing like verify PAR'ed D/L's, or joining segmented ts files back to a single playable file.

I got a DVI-HDMI cable yesterday.
I have been running the last few days using a component cable with 480/576i output to a VP30/ABT102. The VP30 is feeding a Hitachi TX200 PJ using HDMI.
The quality have been ok, nothing exceptional. Much depend on the acutal source.
Have tried various resolutions, 480p/720p/1080i, but liked 480i output best. Use that for all SD mediafiles. When using 720p and 1080i I set the respective resolutions to match.

Ok, back to the DVI cable.
Wow.... a significant better picture IMHO. I tried 480p/720p/1080i. They all look good. 480p have a little edge on the others, using VP30 to scale to 720p. Maybe a little more detail using that configuration.
HD playback using 720p and 1080i is also good. Need to connect a laptop to the RGBHV input on the VP30 to see which is best.

So, going digital is certainly helping!

1. Start Computer Management in the Administrative tools.
2. Then go to Disk Management.
3. Right click on a disk you want to mount and choose "Change driveletter and paths..."
4. Press Add and then Mount in an empty NTFS folder.

Now you will have the disk mounted in the folder you specified.

It seem like under 15 seconds-most to boot. I will try to time it tonight.

mitchjs "i think the tivx takes too long to begin play after i select the video!!!!!"
Xvid/Divx HD files seem to take a few seconds to buffer/decode, while HD ts's,
mpeg's, DVD's play instantly off the internal HD or Network.

Icab "I plan to use it to play DIVX files (created DivX codec) in 1280p and/or 1920i"
"1280p" is actually called 720p (1280x720) while "1920i" is 1080i (1920x1080)
Yes you can play these files with the tvix but they take a few seconds to
buffer/decode before playing. You are maybe better off creating HD mpeg2
Program Streams or Transport Streams. Tvix site lists max bit rates for each.

originalsnuffy "I have ordered this unit from the TVIX USA web site."

Regarding Junction. It is not an NFS server. It is used to create "symbolic links" in Windows. I used it to create junctions from specific media folders on external/internal drives to the TVIXHD1 folder. You can also create a junction with a drive letter but then you must navigate to your files as on a computer. It did just what I needed but I don't have a NAS, just USB drives attached to my computer.

Just install a small software called DVD43 on you PC and put the DVD in your DVD-rom. Then mount the DVD-rom somewhere in your share.

I was about to sit down with my girlfriend yesterday to watch a whole movie thru my newly acquired tvix... A little "look-what-I-bought-and-see-how-good-it-is" thinghy...

Could not get a picture thru DVI. A major bummer, since I used the DVI port the day before.
I tried everything in my power, but was only able to use the svideo and component ports.
At first I though there where an issue with HDCP and my VP30, but the light on the VP30 is blue (HDCP ok).
The screen in solid black, and when I check the input resulution with the VP30 is correctly report 480p/720p/1080i when I change the resolution on Tvix.
So everything look ok. The Vp30 are getting the correct resolution, but it a solid black screen. Hmmm?
Did a factory reset. No go...

I will try to hook the tvix directly to my PJ tonight, also try another DVI-HDMI cable.
Is it possible to bend any pins etc within the DVI/HDMI connectors?

Any suggestions?

Btw, anyone know what refresh rate the tvix are using on the 1024x768 resolution? I tried to use it towards a little 15" Dell LCD-monitor I have. No picture... I think the Dell only support up to 60Hz. Maybe try 800x600 tonight, but need to sort out the DVI problem first.

Update:
this is embarrasing...
I tried with a seperate DVI-HDMI cable to my PJ. Everything ok... I then connected the Tvix back to the VP30. Still no picture. Then I started thinking about factory reset of VP30, then it hit me... many has suggesting removing power from the VP30 unit. Did that, and replugged. After some dodgy flickering etc. I got the DVI back. Weird... but everything is back to normal now.

I have the DVD, but the DRM issues make this very hard to watch on the PC. I think you have to renew the license every 5 days, and sometimes the whole licensing system seems to lock up.

I have read this entire post from the start and am please to see the current state of the 5000. It appears that TViX has addressed most of the early problems that users found. My quandary is whether I should wait to purchase the 5100 or buy the 5000 now. What’s most important to me is that I am able to stream high definition content from my file server and output it through an HDMI or DVI interface. I want to be able to play MP3’s, pictures, etc. and this functionality works for the most part in most of the media adapters available. This unit has the DVI out and that’s why it’s at the top of my list right now. I know the 5100 will have the next generation of processor in it and that it supports the H.264 standard? Is the H.264 standard that much better at compression and video quality that I should wait for the next generation of this player? Is the 5100 going to be an evolutionary improvement or a revolutionary one? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

jofa
08-25-06, 01:37 AM
I should wait for the next generation of this player?

My 2 cents
First: how long do you want to wait? If what you really want is a player NOW, then just buy it. It's not that expensive that one can not live with the fact that it's outdated pretty soon.
The Tvix 5000 was available for purchase almost a year (or was it more?) after it was announced. The 5101 is not yet shown at all to the public and no detailed specs. Just a small press release. They could of course have learned there lesson and be much closer to release date with this one but you never know.

Two:
My guess is that within a year the possibility to play H.264 is really a "must", but currently it's not that much content available and to create it yourself probably requires a rather powerfull PC.

In my opinion these are the 2 main questions to answer to yourself. Me I did the same in June when the 5101 was at least known to be announced but before the official press release. I realized that I wanted a player NOW and am happy with that decision.

/J

Crivens
08-25-06, 04:05 AM
It will be evolutionary, not revolutionary. Mainly because it's supposed to be based on the 5000. I'm betting it will look almost identical both physically and with it's software. Main things appear to be H264 and wireless built in. They are working on a wireless solution for the 5000, so only H264 from the looks of it. The CPU is the next step, but apart from the H264 support it looks more like upgrading to a slightly more powerful AMD from an Intel, say, rather than going from a 486 to a P4. IMHO of course.

Personally I would wait the couple of weeks till they show it off at that show and see the preview comments.

I have the DVD, but the DRM issues make this very hard to watch on the PC. I think you have to renew the license every 5 days, and sometimes the whole licensing system seems to lock up.

I'm just assuming it is a HD version (1440x880 resolution). Not sure what needs to be done in order to transfer it from the DVD. It is probably more to it that just decrypt the "bugger".
Sorry for not beeing of more help...

Meenenator: Thank you for responding on T2. I'll transfer the files from the dvd (if I can) and see what happens. Otherwise maybe I'll experiment along the lines you suggested. As you pointed out, I do actually own the media.

Re: The 5101 discussion. H.264 is being promoted by Apple. But most people are doing H.264 rips to fit on their ipod; seems antithetical to the hi-def approach most of us are going for with this unit. If this unit is just an improved 5000 and will be stable at first release then I suppose it makes sense to wait.

I personally broke down and ordered a current unit (the 5000) now that stable firmware is out. Depends how patient you are I suppose.

Well, at least I am under the impression that h.264 is that standard that will be used for HD broadcasting in Europe. Am I completely out in the blue?

I wasn't aware as to how long the duration was between the 5000 being announced and it actually hitting the street. I was assuming if I waited on the 5101 it would only be until the end of the year. I sent an email to Dvico asking about a release date. Their response was that the unit was under development and that there was no date at this point. My one concern with buying the 5000 now is that as soon as the 5101 is released firmware support for the 5000 is going to start to tapper off.

For you beta testers that aren't afraid of a little Korean language...

ftp://ftp.dvico.com/Products/TViX/FirmWare/M-5000/1.8.3/

This is the version that supports FTP to the Tvix.

BE AWARE THAT THIS HASN'T YET BEEN RELEASED, SO USE AT YOUR OWN RISK !

My understanding also that Europe and all IPTV boxes will be using H.264. DirecTV has started it's migration to MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264). Sooner or later they are saying cable will start the migration to H.264 & VC-1. Some HD DVD and Blu Ray will be using although some VC-1 and MPEG2.

So if this unit has the new improved Sigma chip, SMP8630, it wil decode virtually everything. All files that the TVIX HD M5000 can do plus VC-1 and H.264.

Maybe, but the firmware updates are accomplishing a lot - 1080p, network playback, etc. The 5000 (IMO) compared to everything else is a robust functioning as advertised product. And I sat out for quite a while until the support was there.

Not sure if I'm missing something obvious here...

Setup:
I'm running an M5000 into a DVDO VP30 and then onto a Pioneer plasma. I have a selection of both Region 1 (NTSC) and Region 2 (PAL) DVD's that I'm ripping with Mac the Ripper.

Problem:
The first feature film R2 DVD that I've ripped (Batman Begins) plays back "properly".
The first feature film R1 DVD that I've ripped (Die Hard) plays back in a small centred window on the screen, and I can't for the life of me work out why this is.

The M5000 is set up correctly (i.e. 16:9), as is the VP30.

Any thoughts/advice would be most welcome.

/edit

OK - I've worked out what's going on now I think.

If I set the output to be NTSC, then no matter what TV aspect ratio I set, the Tivx outputs a 4:3 signal (the info supplied by the VP30 confirms this). (This is over HDMI with 480p/576p resolution selected.)

If I select 720p and NTSC, then I get the picture as intended.

Before I pull everything apart to try other options, does anyone know if there's the same bug if I output 480i/576i over component (which I can't get working via HDMI)?

This is going to be a real PITA if I can't sort this one way or another. Why can't any manufacturer get this right? Surely it can't be that difficult to say "output in the exact format that the video is in".

So far so good. Version 1.8.3 has FTP implemented. I sent 2 video ISOs to the box last night and they played fine. Each 8 gb file took about 20 minutes!. Not great but about the same speed as some NAS boxes.

Although I set up a W2K "network places" connection, I didn't bother to use it since they have already noted that Windows wouldn't work with files over 4 gb.

So I went online and download a free version of seagull FTP. YOU MUST FOLLOW TVIX's INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY TO GET THE PROPER LOGIN DATA. You'll find them by going to this link
http://www.tvix.co.kr/eng/faq/Default.aspx?act=LTS

By the way, although the file looks to be Korean, it is the English international version. It did not change any of my settings and worked immediately. I did have to press the video button a couple times to get back to my 1080i settings but that was the setting in the setup and had not changed? Maybe for safety it reverts to ntsc or something imediately after an upgrade ?

Enjoy!

I too have the VP30 connected, and as you stated, sometimes it shows the picture as 4:3. What works for me is to hit the zoom a few times. Then it will be 16:9. At least it looks like it (no black borders etc).
480i over DVI-HDMI cable is not yet supported. I requested this as future firmware add-on, on the tvix support page. Do it, if you haven't already.
I also did check the PQ using component and DVI output. I must say the DVI looks much better. Too bad, since I also have the ABT102 De-interlacer in the VP30.
So I stick with 480p for SD, and 720p for HD on DVI.
I also did an A-B comparison using my old play@tv streamer (component) and the tvix (DVI). Same movies. The tvix has better PQ, although not that much.
I haven't tried a direct connection to the PJ using DVI-HDMI, but have tried component. The PQ using component was ok, but nothing to brag about.
I am using a TX-200 PJ onto a 90" screen.

Hi Meen -

Thanks. I'll try the zoom trick (I assume you're talking about the zoom on the tvix, not the one on the DVDO?

I couldn't find the support page - is this the same as registering and submitting "My Questions"? I've put in a request for native playback. If they could implement this, it would make the box virtually perfect for my requirements.

is this the same as registering and submitting "My Questions"?I think so. Is normally pretty quick to get a response (1 or 2 days). Your request should be added to their "to-do" list if they think it's a good enough idea. So far 2 of my requests were apparently already being worked on (USB key to internal HD transfer and thumbnails for videos), with my last request being unlikely as no-one else asked for it (user choice for menu text colour, or at least black outline the text so can see properly on light tvix.jpg backgrounds) but they put it on the list anyway.

Cheers

With FW 1.8.3kor, OSX 10.4.7, using Fetch, I get 3.5 M/s through FTP.
the TVIX is set as DHCP, but on the router I gave a fix IP to its MAC physical address

Much better and faster than OSX Samba sharing (with SharePoint)

Strange thing (maybe it's because I use OSX??):
when I connect through FTP, I thought I would come directly on a directory with AUDIO, VIDEO, etc.
Instead I come with a disk1, disk2, disk3/usb1, usb2, usb3 etc (where disk1 is the main directory).

No problem as I made a FTP shortcut. But I wonder what are these other disks... (can't open them, authorization denying)

Also... even with the FW 1.7.3 PAL French I couldn't see the screensaver setting, though I read other users could. Now with 1.8.3b I can.

Well,
it's because the screensaver is not in 1.7.3. ;)
The screensaver is released in 1.7.5 which was released as beta to some users.

Any news regarding dynamic shares in 1.8.3? I.e. can allocate any shares, not just the tvixhd1 share.
They mentioned that they are working on implementing it into the next firmware. Are we talking 1.8.3 here, or something to come?

I'm using the netshare program, and a NAS. The media NAS share is mapped as V:/media on my XP, and then NFS'ed (V:/media/movies) using the Netshare app.
Most of the times after a tvix and XP reboot, I have problems accessing that share (I need to access it using Xp first), and even then have problems getting access. The tvix just freezes... reboot and try again. Hate that.
The NAS also used NFS, but must use a tvixhd1 share. That works all the time.
So a removal of the hardcoded share would be a requirement from me, if I shall keep the box.

Do tvix have a FAQ that says what they are working on for the next FW, such that we can follow them up...?

They're working on a thumbnail UI for the videos?Yeah, I emailed them saying if the machine hasn't the processing power to create thumbnails from video in realtime then it would be nice if they gave the user the option to upload images for a video to load instead. A bit like the tvix.jpg wallpaper. So if you have a video called bob.avi then including a bob.jpg would show this as the icon rather than a default movie icon. If you keep the size set at a certain size (say 50x50) like they do with tvix.jpg then you should always have a set amount of time to load the screen, so they can get a balance that isn't amazingly slow. They replied saying they are already looking into pretty much the exact same idea. Hopefully they can pull it off. Assuming the hardware can process the information without too much of a delay.

Cheers

rather than to continue to developp a inhouse average OS, Dvico should try to adapt some other Open Source Media Center OS, by far more convenient.
the best I've found so far is Xbox Media Center (XBMC). it's the BEST!
All you could dream about (thumbnails, all codecs even QuickTime, wmv etc, fine image settings, interface, scripts, configurable FTP, SAMBA/NAS, CSS infos, internet movie database etc) is in it.
So, if my 1999 Xbox can run XBMC so fluently, why a 2006 TVIX couldn't create thumbnails on the fly or play a divx without waiting 20 seconds?.

I find seriously My Xbox Media center 10 years ahead of Dvico in terms of usability, functions, interface design and updates (about 1 update per week). I bought the M5000 just because of its small size and because of the 250 gb XBox limited capacity, and I'm a bit disappointed.

I'm sure some Unix mini-OS could run more efficiently on the TIVX than the inhouse poor firmware/OS (nowadays freaks manage to install Unix on iPods, wristwatches, cellphones etc)

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but what image sizes for still photo viewing are supported on the HD unit?

For example are 7 Mpixel JPGs viewable directly in their native format, or must they be converted first to a viewable (smaller) file size first?

Are JPEGs viewable at 1920x1080i and 1280x720p if the TV connected on the DVI supports those resolutions?

The TVix website only says this:

What audio and graphic formats are supported?

*Audio – MP3, OGG
*Graphic - JPEG

LOL, so just use your XBOX... Why bother with the TVIX 5000?

The TVIX has its pluses and minuses, but overall it is one of the best purchasing decisions I've made. I really didn't think it would turn out as a forerunner in comparison to many other streamers, but it is really shining with the 1.8.3 release.

converse - how well does your xbox playback 1920x1080(i/p) mpeg2 or xvids?
Additionally, does it support full DVD interactivity (menu's)? If you dont want your 5000 anymore, I will take it off your hands since I need another one to connect to my living room LCD.

according to www.xboxmediacenter.com
- HDTV support (multiple resolutions 480p/720p/1080i and progressive scan)*
- NTSC playback on PAL Xbox/TV and PAL playback on NTSC Xbox/TV* where
* = Experimental, unfinished, unstable, buggy and/or limited
- VCD and SVCD (Video CD) (SVCD/VCD menu's are not supported yet)
- DVD-video directly from Xbox DVD-ROM (no DVD-menu's support yet)*
- DVD-video playback* (only IFO/VOB and CSS decode. No menu support yet***)

Seems like some of the basic foundational features are missing (at least for me-no menus and no 1080=no go)

Networking questions.

With any luck my 5000 will arrive tonight. I have pre-loaded up a 250 gb hard drive with some videos and audio.

Has anybody experimented with wireless connections to their HD M-5000U?

Did you use a bridge or a game adaptor?

I know it will be slow....but I am OK with that.

Also, has anybody tried connecting to the ADS NAS or the D-Link Wireless Network Storage Enclosure DSM-G600 via their networks? I am not a wiz at this stuff, but I have both devices at the moment.

"yes XBMC lacks some features, but they will be completed in v.2, which is due to release in one or two months." They have been working on dvd menus for like 2 years it seems. I would be highly surprised if the xbox hardware could decode 1080 content. I waited long enough for xbmc and then moved on when it didnt pan out with the features I feel are minimum requirements. Also I think the xbox is butt ugly but you can always hide it. Being an x86 chip does open up a lot of software though. I also looked at the xbox360 but microsoft intentionally crippled the device for multimedia.

The Zensonic Z500 connects, but only via SMB--no UPnP. D-Link tells me that they're cooking up new firmware, but won't give an ETA. So far, I'm pretty underwhelmed by the DSM-G600.

With Dvico saying they are looking at a wireless option for the M5000U, then hopefully they will unveil it at IFA show (next couple of weeks?). With any luck will be a low price wifi USB key (with memory would be an added bonus) that can just plug in and will work with the next FW. I'm betting the same wireless tech is basically built in to the 5101. Fair enough won't be great for streaming (although my BLT is fine on 802.11g for normal SD DivX files) but good option for transferring files.

Thank you for your responses. I appreciated your comments on the networking options. I may just wait to see what TVIX comes up with. I found some very positive comments about a buffalo ethernet bridge which can be purchased for under $70 including shipping from New Egg. So that might be an option.

Bummer on the D-Link box. I may just put mine on ebay if I can't get it to play ball. But right now I will just focus on getting the TVIX going, and then I'll fool with the networking. Especially now with all the firmware changes that are on-going.

At least DVICO/TVIX keep adding new features. However, I hope that the TVIX is not like my Fusion 3; where I found that adding the latest and greatest update was not always a good idea. I found a stable version that is at least 6 months old, and I will no longer make a changes to the Fusion 3.

Fedex ground decided to skip my delivery for the 5000 today :(

They also now insist on a live signature, which could have been delivered today but not the rest of this week. With any luck TVIX will respond to my emails and help fix the situtation.
