i juat got this from tivx, sorry if it has been posted already, i didnt see it before

on the 5101, tivx said...

The exact schedule is not set, but we hope we can release in this year. The main chip is 8623

(i assumed this chip is from Sigma)

i checked sigma for the 8623 and cannot find it there is an 8622 and an 8624 and as far as i can see DRM rights seems to be the main difference between that range and the 8630 series...

of course they didnt say sigma...i am just assuming it is sigma..

anyone else know anything different here?

the reason i ask is if the cpu is the same(ish), they must be changing (hardware wise) something else...or maybe i just need to get my tinfoil hat....

The EM8623L is the non-macrovision version of this chipset.

Sorry. I should have said the EM8623L is the non-macrovision version of the EM8622L chipset. It also runs at 200Mhz compared to 166Mhz of the current M5000A/U (EM8621L)

1.8.3 has a lot of freeze ups with the FTP protocol. It works, but certainly needs more code cleanup before it's fully usable.

excellent...the extra speed may make a few more things possible on the firmware front.

I transfered gigs and gigs with FTP/1.8.3, without freezes and with rather good speed (3.5 megs/sec).
With FTP software called Fetch (on OSX)

I also get a lot of freezes when using 1.7.3 and trying to access NFS network drives.
My NAS (readynas) is mounted as V: (the media share) on XP, this in turn is NFS'ed using Netshare.
So I need to be very careful in initial access:
1. Power up PC,
2. Access V: from XP (to connect it somehow)
3. Power up Tvix
4. Access the NFS share

(At least thats the way it works ok, it could also be that if I do not access that particular Netshare share before I access it from the XP it might work)

Using different "boot-order" usually freezes the tvix. No idea why...
Then I have to reboot a few times, or maybe even stop the sharing in Netshare, and enable it again.

Ohh, I do wish they could hurry up with the dynamic NFS share they plan to implement...

well, that's what I had understood.

During FTP transferts to/from TVIX i have no freezes/downrates at all.
But tried only with files between 700Mb-1Gb

BY the way maybe you all can help...

I had huge problems booting the M5000, it was booting until the main interface then freezes, saying FAILED on its LED. Only way to defreeze was ON/OFF. USB Volume mounting was fine though.
Anyway I made several consecutive safe firmware upgrades to official 1.7.3 then 1.8.3b, and then it seems to work now (I have occasionnaly the FAILED error but rarely). But after the upgrades it created some files in root disk...

In your opinion, what are these files, and can I delete them safely??

Files in red on the pic:

you should disable recycle bin and system restore for the TVIX drive. it will save you from having to delete these over and over again.

Yes, I know...

Just added my personal experience regarding freezes. Have yet to flash to 1.8.3. Do not need FTP/internal drive since mainly all my media resides on a NAS.

However, it do seems like DVICo is working for us these days with numerous new firmwares with added functionallity/bug fixes the last months. That is a good sign.

I was also told that the dynamic mounts/shares are scheduled for october timeframe (hope I can write this even if it is was a reply from DVICo to me in the Q/A section of theirs). Let's hope they do not mind.
I have seen some negative replies in the VP section regarding people posting "personal" info from the developers. If this is improper please do tell me.

Could members here elaborate on how their NAS share is set-up? I hope to emulate what others have done. I don't want to expose the main PC to the internet by disabling the firewall.

I just got this box last night, and gave it a precursory test. In general, all went well. I just hooked it to the composite input on the front of a regular old tv (no component connection or digital audio connection yet).

I was suprised to see that is does not support wmv7 or wmv8; just wmv9.

Does anybody know if it plays any forms of quicktime? I know that Quicktime incorporates H.264; but does it also have also protocols?

I'll share more as I get going. I have the 1.73 firmware (I have the sense that the 1.8x version is not fully stable yet).

Woohoo, i got my HD 5000A today!

I put a Western Digital 320G in it and everything works. HD TS files play perfectly ... it is amazing to see that.

I promptly returned the really inferior Dlink DSM520 (in fact, I use the money to get the Western Digital).

Now I am very happy :)

BTW, I upgrade to 1.7.3 .... FTP is NOT working on this version, right?

I am really dying for some way to put stuff on the TVIX without disconnect it and take it next to the computer and reconnect in USB mode.

What do you need to know?
I have a ReadyNAS X6 (great product btw). The X6 can use both samba and NFS.
Until DVICo fixes the dynamic mount point (the hardcoded tvixhd1 share) I'm not able to fully use either the Tvix or the NAS to its full potensial without doing a LOT of copying. More on than further down.
I will not cover the Netshare program her, just the out of box functionality of the X6 and Tvix on Samba/NFS.
I have not opened anything in software firewall, except added the NAS and tvix as trusted Ip-adresses. On the router I have done nothing except to have static IP-adresses to each and one MAC adress.
I have further restricted access to the NAS to be only the IP-adresses I use for 3 PC's and the tvix.
The NAS is further set-up to use user-access, enabling me to specify who has read/write access etc.

As stated the tvix expects a tvixhd1 directory or share on the NAS. A directory on Samba and share for NFS.
Samba setup:
If I add a user "tvixhd1" user on the X6 (I'm running user access), I'm able to see the user's home directory on the NAS when using Samba on the tvix.

NFS setup:
If I add a "tvixhd1" share on X6, this is visible on the tvix when I use NFS on the tvix.

The main problem (for me) is that I'm currently using the default setup on the X6 which uses a "media" share. This is not viewable from the tvix, due to the hardcoding.

So in order to get access to my files I need to copy them to either the tvixhd1 home directory (for Samba) or the tvixhd1 share (for NFS). This is not an option for me... too much data to move (and since the X6 actually first moves the files back to the PC, and then back to the NAS, this is a long procedure).
So I'm eagerly awaiting for dynamic mounting point(s) :)

Playback from NAS using Samba or NFS has been very good.
I streamed some NASA space shuttle clips yesterday using NFS.
One 1080i.23Mbps.30fps.AC3.2.0 clip. Perfect.
One 720p.19Mbps.60fps.MP3 clip. Perfect.

Running those clips using first Samba to a PC(XP), and then NFS (using Netshare) to the tvix made the sound stutter a bit.
Haven't tried the same clips using Samba directly from the X6 yet, but the X6 is pretty good using samba. I measured more than 20MB/s when I benchmarked its performance when I first got it. So it should be more than enough for 23Mbps.
Maybe I will try it out tonight...

Haven't had any other performance problems other than that using other HD-clips. Well, except those damn DRM-clips ;) (they don't play at all)

Did this answered your questions?

Support automatic TV type(vertical refresh rate) change according to the source frame rate
If you set NTSC/PAL automatic change, M5000 will check the frame rate and change the TV out vertical refresh frequency. Currently, M5000 will check AVI, WMV, MP4 and TS/TP files.
29.97/59.94 F/S will be changed to NTSC and 25/50 F/S will be changed to PAL
You can set this on only when you have multi-standard TV.

So near yet so far. Let's hope they add checking of .VOBs soon!

Guys, notice also the note after the list of FW changes:

"Currently known main issue.
There is a one big known issue. If you play files from USB external device(HDD or ODD), you will see the freeze or it will stop sometimes. We know this is very critical issue, and we are working on this issue."

This was one of two problems I was having with my TViX, so it's great to know Dvico is on to this. Other problem is stuttering with some xvids, while other xvids play fine. No difference whether the file is played from USB HDD or internal HDD. I can play these files without stuttering from my computer. Anybody having the same problem?

Now that I have all my connections to the new Denon 3806 up and running, I am going to focus on the networking connection to the also new TVIX. I just went through a nice little system upgrade. Thank heavens for ebay where one can find new home for the perfectly good but slightly older toys that get replaced.

I think other people have noted this in older postings, but I have observed with the latest firmware (1.85) some issues.

First, I think on some of my XVIDs the dolby digital soundtrack is somehow just coming out in stereo not surround mode.

Second, on multiple movies the soundtrack is coming out silent, even though the original files can play back on the PC and can be transferred just fine to DVD. The common thread is that the files came from transferred dvds. For example, I dubbed from the Scientific Atlanta PVR to my DVD-Recorder, then transferred the files to the PC. The information shows "o channels" for the ac3 audio. Do you think somehow the files are corrupt; but my DVD player and PC don't care?

Anybody have any thoughts on these issues?

Second, as I believe was pointed out in some threads on terminator 2 wmv9, when playing wmv I have to convert to pcm. Which means the 5.1 soundtrack with wmv9 is lost. I suppose a wmv9 receiver would be able to take the signal digitally, if such a thing existing and if it was a feature I was willing to pay for.

It sure would be nice if wmv7 and 8 were supported besides wmv9.

Now I'm off to experiment with samba, ftp, and so on. I'll probably just connect to the router directly first, then experiment with some wireless if I can the basics to work in a wired environment. Meenenator gave some helpful hints which I appreciate very much, but I am really a novice at this stuff.

Got 1.8.5 working this morning. So far it seems to be working correctly. Bitrate can drop to very very low (or even stopped) when I played HD TS files. However, this is still better than the USB mode which rendered the player unusable.

So far all the files I have are playing flawlessly. I have already set up a very long USB cable from my 5000 to the computers. I guess I will be using either that or FTP depending on whether I want to watch while upload.

One added advantage of USB is that I can directly unrar stuff I dl to 5000's internal drive while if I use FTP, I have to unrar to a HD local to the computer, than upload, which will cost me twice the time.

Can the M5000 mount multiple NFS shares (multiple computers - each with tvixhd1 share)?

I have a share for my standard dvds on my main NAS (a linux box) and a share for TV recordings on my main PC (both shared via NFS). Right now, my Roku HD1000 mounts both and streams content from each perfectly, but it doesn't support dvix or mp4 :( Looking for a replacement...

Damn, I'm away for a weekend and they release a new firmware... ;)

Well, at least I know what to do tonight.

Hopefully already playable files will be playable with new FW. I hate to test everything again.

I have seen that a few files indicate incorrect amount of audio channels. (it reports 2 ch when my receiver indicate 5 channels) (need to check using Gspot etc as well). Aslo noted that the framerate is not always shown either.
And... also noted that the length on some files are incorrect (I'm playing on the 5th minute, while the length was reported to be 3min for example)

I will report my findings to DVICo. Nothing major, I rather have them fixing the dynamic mounting points instead than using time on these small issues.

Like the new auto refresh rate feature. Nice work!

Drew,

As we have seen, sites like engadget are not always entirely accurate. I think they confused many people when they stated:

"...the form factor’s been changed up somewhat so that it’s not really an enclosure anymore — it’s designed to take USB 2.0 external drives as well as flash drive, flash readers and digital cameras via USB host functionality."

This gave the impression that the TViX 5000 would not accept an internal hard drive. But from the pictures in this link, we can see the opposite is true:

As a proof of concept I have connected this unit with a Linksys wireless game adapter. I works just like a bridge on the wifi network, and I have been successful in doing a ftp file transfer using the seagull ftp. I find seagull hard to understand; so I might try some other ftp options.

I have not yet figured out how to use the nfs or samba connections to the ads nas or the d-link nas units that I have. So that is a future project. I do note how many other forum participants use ready nas, so that is something that could be considered.

I found a workaround for the broken audio issues. I took the mpeg files (and in one case the vob file) and re-rendered them. For the mpeg files, I used u-lead dvd movie factory 2, and for the vob I used nero. This brought back the audio. But it makes no sense why the tvix did not find the files in the first place.

Any new news on the 5101? The picture on the korean web sit looks the same as the 5000.

In general, I am becoming a better student of poking around the korean website. They do have some good tips of working with the unit buried here and there, but it is all rather disorganized.

As a proof of concept I have connected this unit with a Linksys wireless game adapterSo you can use one of these adapters to fake a network to the Tvix, so it basically thinks there is a proper cable network when in actual fact it is really a wireless link? So how do you setup the adapter, do you have to plug it into a PC first?

Also does it offer any other advantages, such as increased wireless strength etc? And finally what sort of range are you getting, will it cover anywhere in a normal house for example? Oh, and what sort of transfer speeds are you getting over a 54g network?

Hmm, good news if this works. Real solution that works now rather than waiting for a FW update to Tvix to work with wireless dongles. Plus they may drop the idea, esp once the 5101 comes out (only have their comments about wireless at the minute).

Cheers

The Linksys game adapter was easy to set up. I left the switch on IN for infrastructure and plugged it in. That was it.

I purchased the Linksys wireless game adaptor at Best Buy for $50; and they applied my 12% off coupon. So it was cheap; plus Best Buy has 30 day return policy.

There is some software included but you only need it if you have protection keys or want to change the channel. But I run my network in the clear (my neighbors are sufficiently far away as to not be an issue).

I am doing a transfer right now with Seagull FTP, and the speed is around 500-600 kbps. I am sending a 1.8 gb file, and it will take about 52 minutes. So this is much slower than the USB connection, but of course I don't have to disconnect and move the device to add the file.

I placed this particular unit not far from the wireless repeater (also Linksys brand, as is my router). So I can not really comment on the distance questions.

Streaming mp3, wav, and windows media files so far seems fine. Higher resolution streams do not work as well; hi def becomes jerky and unworkable almost instantaneously, mpeg is not much better. So with this network; the choice is to stream lower bandwidth items and ftp the more data intensive information.

Now that I have a working network (limited as it may be) I now see that one can jump to the network connection, then choose from four networks.

So far I have not been successful getting a connection to either the D-Link or ADS NAS. The TVIX netshare program seems to work fine for streaming right off the PC.

Well, I flashed the unit with 1.8.5. It flashed like a charm :)

I did not experience any USB freezes using an external USB HD, so maybe I'm lucky. I then set up everything again wrt my network, resolution etc.

I also went ahead a did a few tests with the auto refresh rate feature. Looks like it is working ok.
My VP30 reported 50Hz for all 25fps media I tried. It also reported 60Hz for 23.976 and 29.997 media. All well to a certain degree.
I had a few troubles using a perticular HighDef movie, it didn't work initially when refresh rate set to auto. When I forced it to NTSC it did work. The weird part, is that the file worked after I changed it back to auto refresh rate. So it might be a little buggy.
Did not try the FTP since I only use network shares.
I also did a DVE calibration, using a ripped .ISO version of the DVE. It do looks like actual resolution is ok, not much overscan etc. (using DVI).
I had to change the brightness to +14, contrast to -2, and saturation to -21. Using those values I had a fairly good colour saturation, and fairly good control of the black/grey bars in DVE. Hopefully I did it correctly. Always been a little fuzzy the part with the black bars etc.
As far as I could tell it shows blacker-than-black, but my experience with DVE and those are limited.

Cheers,

M.

Does anyone know if this is even planned by Tivx to support for UPNP? Most media players now support it. And this is kind of the missing link for me for the Tivx as a good media player. Also, the lack of support for a gui menu with cover art is a pain as well.

NFS support is way more complex to implement than UPNP so I am confused as to why people this has not been requested more?

Yeah I know... I would love Upnp as well. Esp. since I have a ReadyNas w/Upnp.
Can't say I have seen a roadmap saying Upnp will be implemented. We can only hope.
To bad really. That is the one thing I miss most just now, and until then I have to wait for the dynamic mounting point they say they will intrododuce soon (making it easier to access your own shares with your names on them)
If that works ok, I do not see the absolute need for upnp since I can get hold og most of my NAS-resisiding data.
But it sure would be nice if they could implement upnp.

A side comment: I see that Zensonic has changed name to Ziova, and are introducing two new models (one with dvd-drive, and one without). The suppported format list is huge (incl. ISO, IFO etc (no H264 though)). They have UPNP. Supposed to be introduced into Europe soon. I look forward to that.

We should all send nice requests to TVIX/DVICO asking for the dynamic mounting and for UPNP.

I can't get the 5000 to speak to my NAS units, which has samba and nfs, except through the PC. I have a strong suspicion that UPNP or dynamic mounting will solve the problem, and the unit definitely can communicate at some level to the outside world.

I am happy with the direction support on this product continues to take. I was willing to buy a unit such as this now even while knowing about an impending upgraded unit only because of the strong firmware support. And knowledge that TVIX/DVICO usually needs about 6 months to get any new product up and running in a fairly solid fashion.

See the problem with the current NFS mounting issue is there is not a lot of support for those that have multiple NAS appliances. I realise I can mount 4 NFS mounts but they appear as 4 different NAS appliances and I don't get a continuous list of DVD's.

I suppose splitting them by alphabetical and/or genre might work but again if you have a lot of say one type then this does not really work either.

How have other people solved this problem?

Also, how do people get around the issues with the lack of a good image menuing system and only using the file system. Seems like a step backwards to me. Has anyone developed a good gui menu front-end or does one of the media players integrate well with say DVD Profiler and give you auto recognition and download of cover art.

Yes I have been looking at Zensonic/Zovia but they have only now started beta support for ISO's :) Also, do they have had problems with their devices as well.

I would love to leverage my NAS apliances, I have 2 and will be looking to purchase more if I can get a solution put together. I would like to get rid of my DVD changers entirely if possible and go completely ISO image based. I know Kalaidescape without the 20k :)

I thought they already supported ISO automount? Does this not work as listed in these forums?

Commitment for future UPNP would be a big plus and would make me purchase a unit. I also like the firmware update commitment I have seen from this product.

How would we send an email to them to start the process of the request?

NAS support via NFS I could sort of get by with but again I need some type of approach for a good menu system with images for this unit to work for the wife/kids :)

How would we send an email to them to start the process of the request?Just post a question in the FAQ section of the Tvix website. They normally reply within a day or so. I've had one comment back saying I was the only person who asked for the request so dunno if it would be done, but it would go on the list anyway. If more people asked about it then it would go up in priority. Which reminds me, I asked for an outline colour for menu text (when tvix.jpg is too white) for easier reading. Hopefully more people have requested such a thing. Would be nice.

Good evening.

Will the TVix HD M-5000U play videos stored on a NAS? I assume it provides a list of the videos and you would choose what to play? Will it play VOB files (my DVDs are ripped into one large VOB file each)?

Thanks.

I recon I have read what type of NAS you have a few posts back, but can't remember it just now, but it is not the ReadyNas. Are you using some kind of user-access to your NAS, or are you running on a share-level?
Not sure that it matters much.
What I had to do for my Readynas to work with the TVix was to add a root-share named "tvixhd1". After input of the NAS'es IP-adress in the network setup on the tvix (NFS) it should work.
For Samba access I had to add a new user (tvixhd1 user) to the NAS.

But I hope everything will become better when the dynamic mount point comes.

Has DVICo said anything about UPNP at all? I recon this little unit has limited memory/processing power and adding upnp could be over the top for it.
Not sure how memory/cpu hungry upnp is.

Not sure what you mean here.
The tvix will play files stored on a NAS, using samba or NFS.
And yes it will play VOB files. Not sure if there is any limit size-wise on the VOBs.
Don't think so, since it can play very large .TS files etc.

DVD play: Yes, the Tvix will play VOBs or ISO images stored on a NAS device. If you can connect with NFS instead of SMB you are less likely to get performance problems.

Regarding GUI and thumbnails there is too little processing power in the Tvix to create thumbs from the video file itself (according to Tvix. The unit would be too slow. One solution is to use DVD Profiler/Coellctor or what ever (I have made some tests with Ant Movie Catalogue) and create background images with cover art etc. I know of 2 applications aiming to solve this problem boing developed.

Or if someone has a lot of time and know XSLT (?) that person could use Ant Movie Catalogue, export in XML and create a XSL style sheet which then can be rendered into a 720 x 480 jpg.
I'll be happy to try it out :D

Yeah, hopefully they will go down the pre-processed thumbnail route. Either that or don't create the thumbnails every time. Only the first time (and store as a jpg) or on an option. Although I don't know about auto creation as it may not give a pic you want. Hopefully they will introduce pre-processed thumbnails as I can then integrate it into the application I'm making (see jofa's post) as I already plan to have an option where you can view the video in question and select a frame to use as cover art.

I have decided to change my approach to networking with this device. I have decided to consolidate my backup strategy as part of this. For whatever reason, I don't think this device is going to work with my ADS-NAS or D-Link DSM-G600 NAS. So I am going to take the data off these devices; transfer the data to a fairly big WD external drive, and then sell the two BYO hard drive NAS devices (the ADS and the D-Link) on ebay. They both work; they just won't work with my proposed application.

Then I'll just use the TVIX utility which lets the TVIX stream off the PC and its attached devices. And use FTP to transfer files into the TVIX when needed. Or pull it from the stereo cabinet and use USB 2.0 to do disc cleanup.

The benefit it that I will not have to worry about which files are where, like I do now. And I will have less boxes kicking around. With the new drive I just bought, I have a total of five different backup boxes. I will bring this down to 2 or so.

Somebody recently posted a link to discussion forums for the TVIX on a divx related group. On this group, I found a comment that the 5101 is most likely expected later this year or early next year. As much as I alway want the latest and greatest toys, I'd rather have the 5000 up and running like it is now for the next few months.

Doing it over UPNP would allow for some additional add-ins like Twonky, Tversity, ect.. to be leveraged adding additional functionality on a NAS device like the Infrant which I have and will be buying more :) So for example some add-ins for skins/gui, iso mounting, transcoding on the fly, etc...

Difficult to do that with a plain old NFS mount. As you mention the processing power on the TVIX would not allow for it.

Yes I have read your posts on the XSLT and so on and would recommend you look at the http://www.collectorz.com/ application as it uses gracenote, IMDB as well as lots of others it interfaces with for a more robust catalog. It also has apps for music, movies, books, comic books, games, mp3 and photo which is nice from an future direction standpoint.

I am a big DVD profiler user from way back but they have closed their platform, have little in plugins as well as no SDK as of yet. So I am thinking of changing. Great product but I am looking for something a little more upscale. The CollectorZ music collection has a plugin for a good player which actually integrates the player into it's database lookup functions. So you put in a CD it does lookup and populates both the MP3 tags meta data, images and the their catalog at the same time. With a built in ripper with plugins for some popular encoders. So it is plug, input into database, look up meta data and images, and rip with meta data all in one nice little process. Pretty sweet.

They also have a reporting function which contain templates. So what I thought I might do is to use that function with a tool I downloaded called Universal Document Converter which is basically a print driver that allows me to print to jpg :) I then opened in paintbrush and compressed the image.(313k) See file attached. Need to play around with template and compression but I think you get the idea. Other way is they do allow export to HTML, XML, Text and even IPOD so it I think it would be easy to build it out of HTML and put it in the directory. I assume that requires some programming skills I don't have ;) And also some changes to the firmware to support the association to the HTML page.

This approach I leverage someone elses tool which is already supported commercially and has most of the functions I need and I just print out the JPG files from my database. A kluge but better than out of the box ;)

They have an SDK so it could really be fully integrated over time if someone had the kills which is not me ;)

So I am considering using this type of approach as an interim solution.

Well, I flashed the unit with 1.8.5. It flashed like a charm :)

I also went ahead a did a few tests with the auto refresh rate feature.
I had a few troubles using a perticular HighDef movie, it didn't work initially when refresh rate set to auto. When I forced it to NTSC it did work. The weird part, is that the file worked after I changed it back to auto refresh rate. So it might be a little buggy.

Cheers,

M.

M. Maybe you had PAL and Auto prior to "forcing" NTSC ?

The intention is that unknown formats (not recognized as 25 or 30) will fall back to the selected format. ie if I have PAL and Auto, 40 fps material will play in "PAL mode" (50Hz).

I have posted on their forum regarding UPNP future possible support. I think this would complete the product feature set and things like transcoding, and plugins would be a bonus if they supported UPNP servers like TwonkyVision, Tiversity, etc...

I find it odd that it is one of the few media servers that does not support some type of UPNP function :)

This is the reply I got from Tech Support :(

Hello Troy,

Thank you for the feedback. However, currently we do not have plan for UPnP. We are working on HDTV Tuner and other features. Anyway, I will put on the request list which is for my manager and engineers. This list is jsut for the review and not to do list, so I am not sure we will implement or not.

Thanks,
Eric

I can say if this does not change they will probably have a lot of people migrate to another platform. These devices will never be able to support transcoding at this price-point :( So for those of us who want an all-in one appliance there does not look like much hope in TVIX.

I am considering the Zensonic as they support UPNP. However, they do not support NFS which is better for streaming movies due to the overhead with SMB.

Maybe I will post a poll on who would like to get this support on TVIX and then send in results?

I have to purchase something this week :(

I don't think the Zensonic Z500 unit support the .ts file format unless I am missing something. Is this the unit you are thinking of?

For me the ts file format is the key feature for the TVIX unit. I loaded up the hard drive with .ts files, which play back in hi def and pass on the dolby digital signals (both 2.0 and 5.1) with no problems.

As noted by others and myself, I wish the unit supported windows media 7 and 8.
Which programs do people use to convert these files with a minimum of transcoding artifacts?

I do like the networking utility that TVIX provides now. It lets one access the PC without turning off the firewall. And I also like the FTP capability. I discovered that Seagall is putting its config files into "my documents", and am now liking the free Seagull FTP much more than before.

I have temporarily given up on my cheapo Samba and NFS servers. I think that the ADS and D-Link units that I have are too slow to respond to the TVIX, so I can't get a good connection.

I have actually moved beyond monkeying with the machine and moved onto actually using it! As much as I love tinkering with the tech toys, it is more fund to find a complex device that generally does what you expect.

The Z500 does support TS play. Currently, it doesn't support the ".tp" filename (you need to rename files with ".ts" extension) but that's supposed to be fixed in the next firmware update.

I don't get the whole .TS debate? It is basically MPEG2 right? Isn't that lossy encoding and you lose a lot of format. What tools do you use to do your conversions from DVD to .TS. Is it really better than streaming a DVD ISO image to an player output via DVI to a panel or projector upscaled at 720p or 1080i/1080p?

Or I assume you are capturing HDTV content and converting it to MPEG2 which would make use of the full HD digitial signal :) In which case I have not gone to HDTV yet I am waiting to purchase my first panel/projector with a tuner integrated. (or the TVIX tuner which I have not gotten specs on yet) I hate giving the cable company money for their proprietary closed desktop boxes :(

# Zensonic Video Formats Supported

* MPEG-1
* MPEG-2 MP@HL (720p and 1080i)
* MPEG-4 ASP@L5 (720p), such as XviD, 3ivx, HDX4 etc.
* WMV9 MP@ML (720p)
* Nero Digital™ up to (Main) Cinema Profile
* QuickTime™ .MP4 (MPEG-4 SP video with AAC audio)
* DVB/ATSC Transport Stream Support
* DVD ISO and IFO Parsing Support
* SRT, SSA and SMT subtitles

I don't have a unit yet but assume that since MPEG-2 format as listed that it should be supported. 1080i is good not sure what supports 1080p yet :)

Just a question but why is WM7/8 so important? Is it because they don't have DRM?

I don't really want a HD in my unit although the feature is nice. Zensonic offers this too. Not sure what it benefits unless their code caches the movie file to the local hard drive to prevent skipping in playback :) Which I have not heard that it does.

I have a couple Infrant NAS boxes which are good to use and will probably get a couple more. This allows me to stream quite readily and provides for a good solid platform. Cheaper units like you mention just are not capable as you noted. I am looking at a like 10TB digital movie collection :) My version of a Kailediscape for less than 30k :)

I am still planning a large purchase of equipment to redo my audio/video systems so getting ready to start buying however :)

My key thing to purchase a TVIX is UPNP support as I would like to leverage tools that add additional funcationality like transcoding on the fly etc..

originalsnuffy

I capture US domestic HDTV broadcasts using a DVICO card. It stores these on my computer as TS/TP files. So playing these back without making conversions should by definition provide a hi-def signal to the monitor.

Apparently the Zensonic can play these. But they would need to be streamed in the case of this unit. Some forum members have home networks and servers that can do this, so the Zensonic would be a good choice.

My network/system needs a hard drive resident in the playback unit to play these TS/TP files.

Yes, the underlying video stream is high bitrate mpeg2; but much higher than a DVD can hold. So to put the video onto DVD one has to reduce the bitrate to no more than 8mb/sec (at least as I understand it). And of course one needs to mux some audio onto that too.

Ah yes missed that :) I am not an HDTV'r yet so I am still learning.

I think that the problem I have is with a NAS there is no networked NFS support that is readily available to link multiple NAS appliances together to look like one big share. There is however SMB support of this via Microsoft DFS and SAMBA. So if I use this then the player has to defintely support SMB playback to access my rather large library of movies :)

Said that either unit will work but I believe they both have issues with SMB streaming of DVD ISOs. So I guess I will have to gamble and try to one and hope for the best :)

TPeterson

yes were there is the rub as I want them to stream to like 4 players at once from the same NAS appliance and it would need to support like 40mb/sec it would seem to do that.

What solution would you recommend for HDTV streaming for one of these? Is NFS the only solution?

Thanks

TPeterson
09-11-06, 07:39 PM
I see no rub. SMB chokes at the receiving end, not at the server, to limit streaming to 10 Mbps. We know that PC-to-PC you can get far better than that even on 100-Mbps ethernet using SMB. So your NAS, if it's not a dog, could easily stream 4 SD feeds at once.

The TViX streams HDTV very well using NFS; and the Z500, using UPnP. If DViCo implements UPnP on the TViX, I expect that will also work well.

Brilliant advice for those Linksys game adapters. Bit of mucking around and all is up and running with wireless on both machines. First test had a 500mb+ file FTPing (went back to DOS ftp just to get it going) in 254 secs. Thats 2273.83k a second apparently. Will do fine if you ask me. Definitely not the hour long effort to do 1gb by the look of it. Bet it depends on the link. Trying my 2nd TViX now which is further away.

That is weird, I'm using dvdshrink and no issues what so ever with it.
Maybe you have some setting somewhere in shrink which is not good...?

I have also tried both .ISO and video_TS folder output from dvdshrink. No probs.
Also tried dvddecrypter to rip my DVDs onto HD, and then used DVDshrink to make ISO etc. (as well as removal/compression of extras/audiotrack etc). I have also used other program to completely remove extras (replace them with ~0k files), and then run them thru dvdshrink to make a much smaller DVD image on the HD.

Are you sure you are removing the region encoding and the encryption?
Try dvdencrypter and rip the files to harddrive, then use dvdshrink afterwards.

It should work...

Yea they are ripped dvds that I own that are compressed down to the hard drive. I did take just a compressed Video.TS folder and put on the Tvix drive and
played back fine , so it will play them okay and other formats with no problem. I cant see there would be any setting need to be done in the Tvix and I got the unit networked and does the same thing with iso's on the server. Darn strange.

Hi all !!

I am now owning the TVix for 1.5 month and this device is just great !!!
But I have some questions:

1) I have a AVI file that says 1080p and DTS in the title. But it just does NOT play !
I have a 32inch HD (720i) Philips LCD monitor and I thought that I should be able to display suchh a file throught the TVix on this display !! Am I wrong or not ??

2) The user-menu/interface of my TVix is not crystal clear on my screen. It looks a little blurry but when I play (HD) movies there is no problem at all: it shows me a beautiful picture ! Is this a setting on the device or is my monitor just unable to display the fonts of the menu, or is this normal ??

1) I have a AVI file that says 1080p and DTS in the title. But it just does NOT play !
I have a 32inch HD (720i) Philips LCD monitor and I thought that I should be able to display suchh a file throught the TVix on this display !! Am I wrong or not ??

2) The user-menu/interface of my TVix is not crystal clear on my screen. It looks a little blurry but when I play (HD) movies there is no problem at all: it shows me a beautiful picture ! Is this a setting on the device or is my monitor just unable to display the fonts of the menu, or is this normal ??

Brey (NL)
How is that possible ?? I have the latest firmware 1.8.5.
Well, the title doesn't say it all....
You can either check with the Tvix Manager, downloadable from their site, if it should play or not. The program usually tells you the reason in some way.
Or you can google for, and download, GSpot that will also tell you more about which codec is used in the AVI. For instance anything x.264 will not play....

The avi format is a container and you need to know which codec was used.
I second what jofa said. Download gspot and it will tell you everything you need to know. Is this possibly LOTR? Your tv is probably 720p (not interlaced) and so I would assume you have setup the tvix to output 720p to match the native panel resolution? Regardless, either the tvix or the tv scaler will convert 1080 signal to 720 if you have it set to output 1080.

When you say the file just does not play, I would look at the display on the TVIX device itself. Does it show the playback clock keeping time? If so, it is a display resolution issue. Otherwise, it probably is a codec issue.

Also, sometimes I have had to convert some mpeg files to dvd playback format to work on the TVIX. I hope your files do not need this conversion, as you would lose the resolution advantage.

I watched the video (link was posted in the digital media servers conference) from the IFA trade show. They said the 5101 would be out in Nov. or Dec.; and it would be a new board in the same size box as the 5000. With a new color.

They did demo the HDTV off the air receiver with some German broadcasts, which happened to be SD not HD.

There was some mention of future versions with DRM, etc.

I have a pathological test file (with 1080i resolution) that plays fine until it hits an H2M commercial cut-point and then the video display goes dark and the VFD clock continues to run. This has nothing to do with codecs or resolution, but rather lack of graceful recovery from PCR discontinuities. (It's a problem with 3 out of 3 different Sigma Designs-based players that I have tested)

"Also, sometimes I have had to convert some mpeg files to dvd playback format to work on the TVIX. I hope your files do not need this conversion, as you would lose the resolution advantage." You would only lose resolution if you down rez'ed the original mpeg file when you converted to dvd or used a crappy tool to re-encode. Did you start with a HD mpeg and shrink it down to dvd specifications?

Sometimes VideoReDo can fix things in the file using the quickstream fix feature.
Did you download the problem file off the net? If so, maybe it needed to be verified and repaired due to missing bits?

Okay guys, thanks for your reactions ! :)

I checked the following:

GSpot says:
- Codec: WMV3
- Name: Windows Media Video V9

TVixManager tells me:
Video Information:
- Codec(FourCC) : Windows 9 Media Player(?) (WMV3)
- Frame Rate : 23.976
- Bit Rate : 0
- Frame Size : 1,440 x 1,080 (1.33 : 1)
- Total Frames : 43,128
- B-VOP : NO
- S(GMC)-VOP : NO
- QPEL : NO
- Color Depth : 24
- Suggested Buffer Size : 470,962

So this is the reason why I cannot play this file: a codec that is NOT supported !
Is there a way to convert it to a format that my TVix can play without losing the high-def quality of the file ?

Futhermore, TVixManager gives the following errors at the High-Def 720p files I can play with the TVix:
* Cannot support more than pixels of width 800
* Cannot support more than 414720 pixels of width * height 1280x720
I think this is a mistake of TVixManager because playing these files is not a problem at all !!

But does anyone have an idea what the reason of my blurry user interface can be ?? Do all other owners of a TVix have a crystal clear user interface on their monitor ??
My symbols of the user interface look like the old DOS style symbols........

Brey

The menu screens don't appear very sharp to me either. I suspect that they're done at a very low resolution.

Both mine look fine on the menus through both normal TVs and two monitors through DVI. You didn't change the tvix.jpg wallpaper to something really bright or anything by any chance? Could cause things to look a bit blurry I guess.

I would set a support question with them. They are normally pretty quick.

Here are couple of thoughts.
1. WMV in an avi container is unusual. I have never seen this.
2. The tvix may assume only certain codec's when it sees the avi extension and wmv may not be on the list of assumed codecs.
3. Try renaming the file to wmv and see if it plays.
4. Is the wmv encrypted with DRM? Does it play on your PC?
5. WMV9 is a supported codec and I have not had any problems playing them unless they are locked down with DRM which requires a pc to get the license.
From the tvix page: "Format :.wmv9(no drm, do not support WMV9 Pro nor WMV9 Advanced profile), WMV HD(no drm), .avi, .mpg, .vob, .mp4, .asf, .tp, .trp"
See:http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/Products/HDM5000U.aspx
6. I would not rely on the tvix manager software.
7. Can you upload the beginning of the file for us to test for you? Say the first few hundred megabytes?

I encode WMV to an avi container all the time. I use WMV for the video and just keep AC3 5.1 audio intact in the avi container using Virtualdubmod. Its a neat solution for OTA ATSC broadcasts that have AC3 5.1 audio.

I'd prefer to have an auto output that detects 50Hz/60Hz and also uses the same output resolution as the source material.

I got a DVI-HDMI cable yesterday.
I have been running the last few days using a component cable with 480/576i output to a VP30/ABT102. The VP30 is feeding a Hitachi TX200 PJ using HDMI.
The quality have been ok, nothing exceptional. Much depend on the acutal source.
Have tried various resolutions, 480p/720p/1080i, but liked 480i output best. Use that for all SD mediafiles. When using 720p and 1080i I set the respective resolutions to match.

Ok, back to the DVI cable.
Wow.... a significant better picture IMHO. I tried 480p/720p/1080i. They all look good. 480p have a little edge on the others, using VP30 to scale to 720p. Maybe a little more detail using that configuration.
HD playback using 720p and 1080i is also good. Need to connect a laptop to the RGBHV input on the VP30 to see which is best.

So, going digital is certainly helping!
If they only could get rid of the hardcoded tvixhd1 thinghy ;)

interesting...i'm looking to do the same thing with a vp50 hopefully.
so, if i got this correct, you

1. preferred 480i => convert to 480p by tvix => dvi to vp30 combo => hdtv at 720p/1080i via hdmi
2. conclude that conversion to 480p via tvix on dvi is superior to 480i out via component.

what bit rate are your 480i sources? most of mine are captured with
PVR-USB2 tuners at 12mbps

True but, in a response to a question from me, TVIX support said that it was technically possible but would only be implemented if there was sufficient demand. If you want this then I suggest you put in a request to TVIX.

Yes, you are assuming correctly.
I would prefer a 480i output from the Tvix on DVI port. Connect this output to VP30/ABT102 combo for the best possible de-interlacing, and as stated 720p to projector.

I also think that the DVI output was so much better than component, that I in fact are willing to bypass the de-interlacing of ABT102... says it all...

The tvix does a fairly good job with de-interlacing. I haven't ripped the bundled ABT102 DVD to an ISO yet, so I haven't tried all the various bad edits/etc on the DVD. Could be fun though...

What I do see on most of my material is that there is some kind of "halo" around people/sharp objects. Not sure what it is called. I see it on most xvids and DVDs, not sure I have seen it on 720p/1080i material yet. It is no "halo" when using my DVD player w/component.

A little digression:
I saw IMAX super speedway.HDTV.720p the other day. It seems like the racing car scene(with the stadium background) from the HQV/ABT102 DVD is taken from the IMAX movie. Fun... what is good is that I could not see any moire-effect on the stadium using the tvix. Could be because it was already a 720p clip.

Cross my fingers that enough tvix user wants the 480i DVI output that DVICo implements it...

Cheers!

it would be nice if they could do it.

i have to say i'm skeptical, after reading that the sigma chip has a timing
problem with 480i over hdmi, and also noting that in a couple of years, not
a single competing product using that family of chips has implemented 480i over hdmi/dvi either.....their developers may not have looked into it very carefully before responding to you, perhaps?

Hello everybody:)

I'm a new Tvix user, and i had the M-5000U for half a week now.
First my good experiences with the Tvix:

It almost plays everything I trow at it ( at least 96% of my mediafiles).
HDTV formated movies work and look great even though I only owns a 32" CRT TV.
The remote have a good range (compared to some of my others).
The cooling of the hardrive is very effective and silent.
It looks good;)
It is way better then my old Pc based media computer (though it could handle much more codecs).
USB works in normal USB parameters;)

Now to the "downs":

For a 100mbit networkconnection its rather slow i think, and i haven't been able to figure out what's the reason.
But some testing with different workloads on my TVIX suggest that the TVIX just don't have the processingpower to use all the bandwith.
Luckily It's enough for streaming, but its damn slow when moving files i think.

And that 96% figure I tossed in, doesent concern jpg pictures.
Almost all my thousands of my own taken digital photos (with different cameras) can't be shown on the tvix.

And what is this about only be able to share one folder on my PC named tvixhd1??
IT would be much more usefull to be able to share four folders on one computer then one folder on four computers. Not everyone can afford or even have room for that amount of hardware.

I have been "doing" computers for a long time, so of course i saw this "sharing problem" as a challenge;)

I created the "twixhd1 folder", then i created several maps in it named after my harddrives.
Then i used "start/run/diskmgmt.msc" to map the drives to the folders.

When i on the PC tested to browse in this map setup, and it worked like a charm;)

So I started up the TVIX and found the network and the tvix folder.
One of the mapped drives (a older 120gb drive) worked as it should, and i could browse everywhere and play everything.

The other harddrives i was not so lucky with:(
I could enter their root directory and browse "down" two levels in the filethree, but not further. And also those folders i saw seemed to be empty.
In the root though, i could see some mediafiles, but when trying to play them the tvix "said" the codec was wrong. So i copied that file over to the tvix and tryed again, and of course it played the file perfectly.

The drives that doesen't work in this way seems to be "extended partitions". And 200gb size.

Then i stumbled over another problem.
When you create a folder directly inside the tvixhd1 folder, i got similar problems as described above, if that folders name only contained capital letters. So that one i fixed easy.

So if anybody can tell me why this mapping problem occure I would be thankfull.

The file concerned is a file I downloaded using ********** and it concerns an IMAX broadcast in HD. The file is called: IMAX.SPEED.WMV-HD.1080P.DTS.Fanxy at Silu.avi
When I try to play it on my TVix it just skips to the next movie and leaves this movie unplayed ! When I rename it to WMV the TVIX says:
- This file is not supported.
- Unsupported Video Codec: BAD_

The file plays on my PC without any problems so there is no DRM involved in this file.

Maybe there is somebody else who can figure out what the problem with this file is......

Hi all,

Today i have build a NAS server with FreeNas, and it works great.

At this moment i only got 1 TVIX 5000 at home (next week ordering another 2) and streaming of MP3 / JPG and DVD ISO files are working great from the nas server with SAMBA (dont get NFS to work)

But is it also going to work when next week i got 3 tvix here at home and let say somebody is going to watch a DVD Iso in the living room and the other one is going to watch a DVD Iso in the masterbed room and somebody else is listening to music.

Anybody got some experience with this ? Is a nas server fast enought to do this ?

And when i want to watch a DVD iso in the living room and the same iso in the masterbed room is it possible ?

I hope somebody got some experience with a NAS server connected to a TVIX.

Anybody got NFS working with freenas and tvix ?

Andy69,

Unhappily the FreeNAS server doesn't let you change the name/path of the NFS share, so it is not recognized by the TVIX. I've found no way around it.

You can definitely watch the same movie from multiple devices. I've tested playing from five at once off my FreeNAS server and it works fine. (one TVIX, one Wired MasonIP, and three Macs.)

Don't know about others but it displays ALL of my pictures taken with a Canon PowerShot A95 (5 Mpixel) and outputs them in excellent quality.
I use 1080i over component.
But to get it mainly for pictures is probably a disappointment. It is rather slow in displaying pictures. The larger pic the slower.
You can do slideshows with some transition effects but as I understand it pictures have to reside in the same directory to be in a slideshow. (Please tell me I'm wrong and have missed something....)
There are no miniatures so finding pictures is rather difficult if you want to search for them.

If your main reason is pictures and you haven't bought one already I would wait for 5101 if I were you. It is supposed to have hardware JPEG decoding and should be much faster in picture handling.

And when i scanned the files with the tvix manager it also said that the pictures was incompatible, so i suggest you download the tvix manager and try it out on your pictures. Do people here use the TVIX manager with their 5000s?

Does it do useful things?

I tried to install it, but had issues with installing it. The software would not recognize the 5000 as being attached for validation purposes.

Also, trial and error worked OK for figuring out what generally would play and what would not.

So I gave up on the TVIX manager software. (Similar to how I gave up on the ADS NAS and D-Link G600--found other ways to get things done that were much simpler).

Thank heavens for the TVIX netshare program 1.06 and Seagull FTP. Though at the end of the day I am happiest with just taking the unit to the PC and hooking it up with USB 2.0 to do the "heavy lifting" of file updating.

All of my jpgs show fine (Sony and Kodak cameras). Although when I was mucking around with FTP a jpg didn't work because I forgot to put it into binary mode (was in ascii mode). Worked with binary transfer.

TVIX Manager? What is that then? Is it server software or somesuch?

TVIX manager was software released for other units (I think the 2000) that was supposed to scan videos to see if they are compatible with the TVIX and in some cases to repair the video files.

Thing is they mention that thumbnails would slow it down too much (M5500 should do it I read somewhere). Hopefully they said this before they replied to my support email saying they were working on an idea like I suggested; basically create the thumbnails yourself (say a jpg with the same name as the avi and a set size eg. 50x50 pixels) and the Tvix can use these instead of processing a large image and scaling it. Failing that then do what Windows does and only update the thumbnails file when the Tvix first sees the file or when it is amended. Would be slower though, and how would you get a decent image? I mean the first frame is normally black, and a set point into the avi (say 2 minutes) may be anything. No, user thumbnail creation would be the fastest and best way of doing it if you ask me, especially if something could be built into this manager software to allow you to choose a thumbnail graphic or grab from a set point in the avi (and then auto send to internal HD).

Is the bottleneck the link to the PC? I have a CAT5 100mbps link - is that what you have or is your link a wireless one? Is it faster if you have the pictures stored on the local (optional internal) hard disk? What is the file size - typically cameras reduce the pixel count by at least a factor of 4, even on high res modes, so a 7.2Mpix picture should be no more than about 2Mpix or 2Mbyte in size max. At 100mbps, that should only take about 0.2 seconds at 10 bits per byte (8bits + overhead of 2 bits/byte). Sorry for all these questions, but info on this beast wrt its performance on picture networking seems very scarce.

Will the M-5000u play direclty from my NAS over my network?

Thanks.

Crivens

I would imagine the bottleneck is the CPU. I mean apparently the M5000 doesn't have hardware jpg decoding (apparently the 5101 will), so it has to work everything out with software basically. And it's CPU is less than 200mhz I believe. Even on my internal 7200rpm HD the Tvix takes a couple of seconds to show a 2 megapixel image. Although most of these media players use the same sigma chips, and the Tvix is one of only a handful that use the newer chips, so I seriously doubt many other non-PC device will show them much quicker.

That was about the same answer I would have given...
It is not bad to view pictures from (the tvix...), but the lag is only noticable when you want to go thru the pictures manually. When doing a slideshow this is not noticable, since the tvix will load the next picture while the current is showing.
Can't imagine that an internal HD would make it much faster. Remember that is can do more than 23Mbps on HD material... a tiny 2MB sized 7.2Mpx picture should have no problems being loaded over a network.
My 2 cents this morning.

Ah, that changes the "picture" somewhat for me. Need to rethink again then. Slideshows is what I am interested in mainly. I take it then, that the M5000 has built in slideshow software - are there many options available on it - like various ways to disolve between pictures?

Will the M-5000u play direclty from my NAS over my network?

It depends... what is you NAS?

If it can do NFS and Samba you should get it to work. I got a ReadyNas and it is working fine. There should be posts here about others have problems with their NAS'es (linksys and those...) (can't remember just now which ones, do a little search)

If you are all out of luck with a direct connection you could always use the Netshare program and "share" your NAS from a PC. Not as effective though, since you most probably would be doing Samba from NAS to PC, and NFS from PC to Tvix.
A clean NFS connection is best.

I tried a 1080i 16Mbps file the other day and it was not playing back without distortions using Samba to PC, and NFS from PC to Tvix. I have done a 1080i 23Mbps using direct NFS before. NO problems...

So a direct NFS is best for those HD-files. 720p is no problem using Samba, neither is less bitrate hungry 1080i files. 16Mbps was a bit much for it... been doing 10Mbps and that was ok I think...

Sorry for the lengthy post, you just got me going there for a while... could be too much coffee this foggy and slightly cold morning.

Hi,

I purchased and received this player 2 days ago and I have not able to play my decrypted DVD backups in IFO format with great success. I have about 30 movies decrypted using DVD Decrypter and DVDFabExpress on the internal hard drive of the HD 5000U and I can only play about 2 of them sucessfully by selecting the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. For all the other VIDEO_TS.IFO files, when selected, the screen displays " Please wait" for about 5 seconds and then the folder containing the files is displayed again - no movie is played.

Please help with any suggestions. I posted a message to technical support yesterday, but have not received any replies yet.

Thanks.

I've seen this behaviour on some movies that are ripped improperly. I've been able to fix the problem by creating a disc image from 'bad' VIDEO_TS folder, mounting that image, then re-ripping it using my tool of choice (I'm on a Mac, so I use MacTheRipper, but this may work with your Windows tools too.)

Hope this makes sense.

With regard to the playback problem; have you tried repeating the procedure?
I have a few dvd files that need to be clicked on twice before they work.

TVIX responded to a few tech support questions I recently had. They are going to look into the problem of some files not properly playing audio.

A new firmware is expected in October that should address some of the network mounting issues we are having. I don't have full details, but perhaps some good news is coming.

The unit is not going to support windows media 7 and 8, ever. Just 9.

Hi,
can someone give me exact instructions on how to encode a DVD or VOB-file using latest Divx Encoder v 6.2.1 or Dr Divx.
It seems like not matter what I do it just wont play on the Tvix.

My latest attempt is, according to GSpot:
divx 5.0 - which is strange since I use 6.2.1
AC3 sound
720 x 400 resolution, 25.000 fps.
BVOP and NVOP. No QPEL or GMC.

What I use is Divx setting "Home Theater". I've tried a few settings under the advanced tab, like more quality. MP3 sound instead, but still no luck.

So, please. An EXACT instruction on how to successfully encode my DVDs to Divx or anthing else that is compressed but still good, will be very appreciated.

Oh, and Tvix Manager says "unexpected error when scanning...". The file plays on the PC though....

Edit: Ok, so I finally found it out. I accidently included subtitles IN the actual divx file... :p
Anyway, any hints to good quality contra small size settings are still welcome.

Thank's

I'm using my WinXP pro machine as an NFS sever with Netshare on a wired network. There is no hard drive in the 5000 and it has firmware 1.8.5. When playing mp3s it takes approximately 9-10 seconds to change songs. I have about 1500 songs in the mp3 folder. This time lag between songs is quite annoying. Is there a way to speed this up? I notice the time between songs is much shorter if there are only a few songs in the folder. However, I do not want to reorganize my files. On the same network I have an old Turtle Beach Audiotron that uses SMB sharing. The Audiotron can change songs faster than a real CD player. The point being that it is not a network/server problem. The delay resides in the TViX.

If the TViX could manage mp3s well, it would truly be a great media player for me. I have tried 3 other players and when in comes to playing DVDs stored as IFO/VOBs the TViX is hands down the most robust in duplicating the physical disc experience.

Also, are there any plans to support ID3v2 tags? Are there any plans to enable the selection of songs by artist, genre and other tag fields?

Thanks

I was wondering how well this sigma chip based Tvix can upscale normal dvd resolution up to HD resolutions?

There are many upscaling normal dvd players out there now, Oppo being a popular one. Can anybody tell me, does the sigma chip compare? Does upscaled dvd material look like 'almost-HD' with the Tvix?

Thanks.

Based on input from various people on this forum and other forums, I have purchased a logitech harmony 676 to control my system including the TVIX. If anybody here wants to share war stories about programming the Harmony I'd be interested. I was surprised that the Logitech menu system knew of the TVIX 5000, but did not seem to have any commands programmed in. Maybe somebody here knows how to access the commands? I've entered a few using the learning function.

I never really focused on this before, but I seem to have a 5000A. I gather there is little difference between the A and the U, perhaps just how the power function works?

With regards to the picture quality question for upscaling--
in general, I personally don't think any unit can make the resolution of a video source any more than what you start with. Whether your TV/display does the upconversion, the dvd player, your receiver, or the TVIX, the picture is what the picture is.

I think the unit has a fine picture, but it is not quite a crisp at my Denon 2900. But that is not what I expected from a $350 unit that does so much.

I have used DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink (turn off compression) with good success. I am using network storage - not a drive in the 5000, but I don't see how that would matter. I see that you have tried DVD Decrypter. I just use the default settings and Decrypter worked well for me. I have occasionally had problems with DVD's I've authored from Nero but no problems with Adobe Premier Elements.

When I do have problems, I use one of two fixes. The first is basically what DVDwizard suggested. However, I just open the VIDEO_TS folder with DVD Shrink and have it make a backup. This method always works for me. The second, faster method, is to use FixVTS. This works about 3/4s of the time. If you disable the backup mode of FixVTS it is very fast.

If you use dynamic IP adresses, the Infrant may have somehow changed IP adresses and you may need to re-enter it in the setup page. This has happened to me several times and I will eventually change over to static addressing to solve this problem.

Good to hear that there are a few other ReadyNas/Tvix combo users out there!

Hope they will fix the tvixhd1 share thinghy soon though. At the moment I have a mixed bag. Use both tvixhd1 share for some media and Netshare for the "orginal" media share... (shared thru the XP-machine)

Anyone knows if they are to implement multiple shares from one PC using the Netshare program (for us having media residing over multiple partitions etc)?

Or are there other NFS server applications out there which will do that. Any ideas?
I must say I have been a bit lazy in that respect, and haven't done much searching.
I do not use CFS/Samba from my XP-machines, just NFS (samba from NAS to XP, NFS from Xp to Tvix). So an application which could share multiple partitions/folders etc onto the Tvix would be great.

Btw, needed to rebuild a disc on my Nas the other day. Some SMART errors was showing. Did a swap with a new disc, and the whole thing rebuild/resynced itself... love the NAS more and more...

Have you tried to map different partitions to specific folders inside the "tvixhd1" on your computer?
To do this use: "start/run/diskmgmt.msc". A good tutorial is here:http://www.modzone.dk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=278

To do this you shouldn't use netshare though. just plain normal networkshare in windows. This is what the DVICO guys say anyway, since netshare doesen't support sharing drives.

I have som problem with some drives when doing it, but it works perfectly on one of my harddrives. So at least now i can share two different partitions. DVICO support thinks it is something vrong with my computer.

So if you could try this, and then tell me if you succeeded I would be happy, since i have no other computer to test with.

NEW QUESTION ABOUT NOISE.

I asked you good people about system noise on the 5000U before purchasing, and many helpful replies assured me that noise was not an issue. And the unit is quiet, no question. At low speed you can barely hear it, and certainly you can't hear anything when something is playing.

Okay, call me anal, but I spend thousands on *silent* PCs, and more thousand on high end silent A/V, and more .. okay you get the idea. For *me* the low "ticking" of the foolish fan in the 5000 is too loud. So, once I'm sure the thing is working, I'm ready to ditch my warranty and cut the fan leads. I'm running diskless.

Other than this forum, which forums have you found that discuss this unit?

There is one very helpful European DIVX board that discusses the TVIX in some depth, which Meenanator referred to earlier.

Is there any kind of forum on the TVIX website? I have noticed that there seem to be references to other people reading answers to my tech support questions, but I am not clear if this is a correct interpretation. If the posts can be read by other users, how are they accessed?

Also, it is pretty clear the the TVIX is compatible with the Ready NAS. I have seen one or two posts on DIVX board implying that the unit works with some of the Maxtor external network drives. But I am looking for a less expensive solution that the ReadyNAS. So lets keep sharing our success stories as they develop. (I do think that the issue is not just Samba and NFS; but also how quickly the units respond to requests from the network and begin streaming data).

Xstatic is talking about running his TIVX diskless though - that will make a huge difference.

My TIVX is running diskless and is on 24/7 in a cupboard with virtually no airflow which also has about 5 power-bricks for other bits of kit in it, and doesn't even get warm. Sure - I have the fan running, but I'm pretty certain others here are successfully running their TIVX diskless without the fan.

Hi, first of all thanks to everybody on this forum. I was reading a lot postings... purchased my Tvix about two weeks ago ... followed all the good advice... and my family and I love it! (I got even the FTP going)

However, I have a two issues:

1. I try to make slideshows. Like explained on the tvix website; I made a special directory, dropped my jpg's and mp3 in. I can click now on my mp3 or a jpeg file and one or the other is playing, but never both. What do I do wrong here?

2. When I zap through the DVD's of my kids, TVIX refused to play the fourth DVD I click. From now on, non of the DVD's are playing. I have to shut down the system and start up again. Does anybody had the same? (I downloaded the latest version)

Thanks for your input,

I heard today from DVICO support that in next version of the firmware you should be able to share multiple folders when using ordinary windows sharing (i guess that means SAMBA). NFS/netshare will not support that.

Trying to determine if any of these Networked Media Players can support an external DVDROM drive connected over USB2.0? The manual for the DVICO TVIX-HD M-5000 says only hard drives and thumb drives are supported, but thought I'd ask if anyone could try to hook up a USB2.0 DVD drive to one, and plop a DVD in there to see if you can play it back that way?

Thanks in advance.

PS: am also checking on whether the MediaGate MG-35 can do this over in another post. I think the Rapsody N-35 can support it, but am trying to confirm that also. When I gather all this info I'll post it somewhere on AVSForum so if anyone else tries to put this same config together they can benefit from this info.

One more question -- can you plug in a USB2.0 Hub into the back of the TVIX HD M-5000U so you can connect more than 2 USB2.0 Hard Drives? The FAQ on the TVIX website is not clear -- it says (at http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/FAQ/BeforeBuy.aspx?act=RD&id=63&pg=1)

"How many external hard drives may I use with a USB hub?

You may connect up to 2 external hard drives with the powered USB hub."

But I'm not sure if this means each USB hub can only have 2 drives or if the entire configuration can only have a maximum of 2 external hard drives?

Does anybody know or can anybody with one of these units try this?

Thanks in advance!

With regards to the USB hub, as far as I know you can only hook up two external USB drives.
When you do a jump command, you can see four entries on the top. The ones of the right are USB drives. By the way, be patient when you hook up a USB drive. It takes a bit to recognize the drive and get going.

So I gave up on the Denon 3806 remote for using the TVIX. It could not learn any TVIX commands.

I bought a logitech harmony. It definitely can learn the TVIX commands. But when I select the up or down command, it jumps about three. I know there are some delay settings that can be changed. Does anybody know what settings seem to work with the Logitech harmony series and the TVIX 5000?

Oh, by the way, I saw on the Hijack Divx Tvix forum that the 5101 is not expected until about Feb. Now people are starting to talk about the 5500, which picks up the H.264 and has a higher powered processor. Well, I am happy with the 5000 for now...

Well I tried shortcuts inside tvixhd1 on day one, and that's out. I just tried the above trick, and the share isn't root enough for disk management map to.

At least not fer me.

How I have my system set up:
My HTPC has two internal drives (C & D) and two external USB drives (E & F). I use BeyondTV to save recordings (HD and SD) to these individual drives in folders named VideosC, VideosD, VideosE, and VideosF (each folder in a different drive). On drive C, I also have a folder named Tvixhd1. Within that folder are sub-folders named VideosC, VideosD, VideosE and VideosF mapped to the actual folders in the four hard drives.
I mapped these folders to Tvixhd1 using junctions. I found a good solution for this at http://www.rekenwonder.com/linkmagic.htm ... a program called Junction Link Magic. It is very easy to use.

Thanks in advance

I have a samsung dvd-rom in an enclosure hooked through usb2, plays everything EXCEPT dvd's with copy protection(so pretty much everything storebought:(). Not to mention the usual usb glitches you get with the current firmware: freeze up, stutter...

Anyone have a stand alone nas drive(with NTFS format) hooked to the tvix? I'm hoping this will bypass the glitches I get with usb2 connected hard drives, networking my pc to the tvix is not an option sadly.

Thanks!

I had the same problem with my 885.

Off the top of my head, it's something like...

Go into the control software for the 885 and say you're having a problem controlling the 5000 - you'll then get asked a series of questions, one of which is "5000 is reacting too quickly/slowly to commands". You're then presented with a number from 1-5, and it will be set on 3. Simply change it to 1 and you're good to go.

I heard today from DVICO support that in next version of the firmware you should be able to share multiple folders when using ordinary windows sharing (i guess that means SAMBA). NFS/netshare will not support that.
Any idea if they are opening up for something else than the guest account?
Call me paranoid, but I do not want to use the guest account. It should be no problem for DVICo to enable user-selectable name to used for SAMBA.
I only use NFS/Netshare for that reason.

Well, I did try it at one time a while ago. I was able to mount various partitions inside a tvixhd1 folder on C:. I then tried to open up for the guest account, but never did enough to actually get it to work. I do not have any intentions of opening up for a guest account just yet. I am primarily looking for a NFS only solution from my NAS (since most HD programs do not run smoothly enough using samba).
On a secondary level I also want to join multiple folders/partitions into a share which the Tvix can see and use, again most preferably NFS since that is working properly now. I have multiple partitions with media, so I'm looking for a simple way to join them. I will look into the latest suggestions here and try them out.

Maybe DVICo are also looking into ways of using specific user-names other than "guest" for samba sharing. Time will tell...

This is the exact text of a message I received from Dvico on this point. Perhaps our experts here can tell me if this means anything good.

We are adding a new feature so you can change the mount point you want. With this, I think you can attach any device that support SAMBA share or NFS share. It will be release on Oct.

Anybody compare the video quality for non-HD content out of the DVI port for this box versus other media players? In my personal experience , my ROKU Photobridge seems to play decrypted DVD content, out of the component outputs, at a much sharper resolution than the TVIX box out of the DVI port. My TVIX is configured for the 720p resolution. It seems like the upconversion capabilities of the ROKU box are much superior.

Comments or experiences vs other media players?

Doesn't tell me much. It is as always another "cryptic" message from the DVICo guys. I have had a few of them myself. Most of the time you get a tiny bite of the apple, but not all.

My "understanding" would be that this is another confirmation from them that they are indeed working on a "dynamical mounting point". No more tvixhd1 hardcoded shares etc.
I recon in order for it to work you need to input the correct name-share yourself into the tvix-unit. Today it only works with tvixhd1, but this is about to change it seems.
Its october... where is it? LOL...

I'm for one is highly awaiting this feature.

HP Media Vault mv2010/mv2020 - which allows consumers to easily protect and share digital content across multiple PCs. With its user-friendly HP-designed interface, even the least technical family members can enjoy the same movie, photos, music or video by streaming the file from the Media Vault to different computers or networked TVs throughout the home. With a capacity that expands up to a staggering 1.2 terabytes, the Media Vault can store up to 500,000 photos, 16,000 hours of music or 340 hours of video.

I took a look at the HP website. It support UPNP. It has some kind of a license from Microsoft; but it is not obvious to me if it is a Windows machine under the covers.

One early review said it was a Linux machine. It was officially released on Sept. 29; Micro Center is already advertising it.

I would not be surprised that with some futzing might be a very nice media server for the 5000.

Dont know if this suggestion has been up before.
It would be nice if the TViX could stream web radio like iTunes or any other mediaplayer.
I have it hooked up to my surround system all the time and would really like to be able to just specify a web radio URL. The HW should be able to handle this...
I'll post this to DViCO...

Good! Do that. I've asked for Shoucast support and they've said that they will implement it. However, when I recently asked for the status of that feature they said it was "on hold" due to other features and bug fixes. The more people that asks for it the more likely we will get it I hope.

I need to copy them to either the tvixhd1 home directory (for Samba) or the tvixhd1 share (for NFS). This is not an option for me... too much data to move (and since the X6 actually first moves the files back to the PC, and then back to the NAS, this is a long procedure).

I know you posted this a long time ago (I am still "catching up" on this thread), but I have a ReadyNAS. You can go into the NAS backup scheduler, and create a "backup" job to back up the data from the media directory to the tvixhd1. That would be very speedy (no network traffic), according to pointers I've read on the Infrant website.

Hey guys feedback from users from this thread caused me to go with a Tvix 5000. Special thanks to zhenerale for turning me onto media servers in the first place, qz3fwd for vouching for digial connection being a good company to do business with, and of course Crivens who has 3 of them and does a lot of my specifc usage and whom answered my questions about them.

Just wondering if there is there a thread for features coming soon according to tech support, and a wish list of features thread or should be kept in this thread?

"Coming features"
Move files to and from external hd/flash drive to Tvix 5000's internal HD..Sweetest!
Shoutcast..Sweet!

I got some strange things going on since some days with my tvix.

I have a Freenas server running with dvd iso files and als extracted dvd's / mp3 / photos / etc...

When i now playing a DVD (iso or extracted (using ifo file)) after some period of time (5 a 10 minutes) the divx will totaly freeze i can only press the on/off button and then it will reboot.

What can this be ?

I'am using firmware version 1.85

Question 2 : Is there a better software solution then Freenas ? So i can use NFS ?

Thx

Just wondering if there is there a thread for features coming soon Well, I asked for thumbnails (pre-created ones will do like using tvix.jpg for wallpaper). They said they were already looking into that idea. Cross your fingers.

Out of interest, I have a small problem with NetShare. Basically I am using a 500gb drive on my backup PC which I use for sharing files with my Tvixs (and BLT). But NetShare only allows a browse option to find the location of the TvixHd1 folder. This is fine, but when my drives auto-allocate a drive letter this can sometimes be the wrong drive letter for NetShare. Is there any way to make it point at the drive name rather than the letter?

Cheers

I know I probably can do a background backup onto the tvixhd1 share, but I do not like the idea of moving those files just for the sake of accessing them from the tvix.
I'll wait for the new firmware with the dynamic mounting point first and then decide.

Crivens, is this a problem?
I have a lot of external drives(as well as a ReadyNas), and I only very very seldom need to change the driveletters on those. It did happen the other day that one of my PC's "forgot" the letters for some external discs, but it must be over a year since I had to do that.
No idea why it changed this time (well, I did play around with some registry cleaners etc, that could be the cause).
But, as I said it almost never happens.

Is it a big problem for you?
Or am I totally getting this post wrong? hehe...

"Coming features"
Ability to move files to and from an external hd(s)/flash drive to Tvix 5000's internal HD.
Shoutcast

UPNP

Well I could change the external drives to try to have a spefic letter when plugged in (all set to automatic I believe) and that should sort it. It is mainly a problem because I have a few external drives that I use with the one machine, but I don't always have them on. Just thought there may be a way to point to a drive name rather than a letter. I know in work we are constantly changing links to be \\whatever\folder rather than G:\Folder just because 3rd party software tends to use the letter which can then screw us up on other machines. As it turns out we sort of gave up, and now have scripts running at boot up to map drives and shared network folders to standard drive letters across the network (about 1500 PCs globally). Now all software works. Might be an idea to implement the same idea.

Question 1--moving files around

I am not clear whether TVIX/DVICO has agreed to simplify transferring files to/from an external disc drive. IF they have, that would be great.

Does anybody know if you can remove files using the FTP process? I know you can add them (well really send them!) to the TVIX.

I hooked up my notebook to the drive in the stereo cabinet, and then hooked up my external hard drive and the TVIX to the notebook. The idea was to simplify file maintenance; I didn't want to disconnect the TVIX and drag it to the main computer.

Only one problem....for some reason the various NTFS drives would not give the notebook permissions to delete some of the files on the TVIX! Anybody know why this would happen and how to fix it.

When I gave up and took the TVIX to the main computer, there was no problem moving/deleting the files.

Question 2--hi def content sources

So now I am wondering....I "tape" my HD material from unencrypted sources; primarily PBS hi-def. Where else to people get hi-def material for the machine? I am so frustrated that I can't play Terminator 2 in WMVHD due to all the protection.
Funny; I own the disc...so you would think I should be able to PLAY it. Silly me.

I am not looking for links to copyrighted material. I am more interested in how people get their licensed or purchased content onto the machine. For example, if you subscribed to HBO Hi-Def; how would you get it to the machine. That kind of thing. (In other words, I am not interested in grabbing content from grey sources). I suppose the answer varies from content provider to content provider and from country to country. So I would be interested in various people's experiences.

Question about using the 5000 for playing music...

Can you access playlists or songs and see them on the display, or does the TV have to be on?

I am wanting one for my home theater, where I currently have an AudioTron to play my vast MP3 collection. I do NOT want to have to turn on my projector just to select one of perhaps 20 playlists...

Can they easily be selected using only the TVIX display? (only 7 characters!)

Hmm? Have you tried removing the DRM? If that is the problem.
There are a few programs out there (can't remember from the top of my head this morning). I successfully removed DRM on a few trailers which was unable to play on the tvix. Now they are all go ;)
It is a pity though, DRM on trailers...

All this DRM is a shame... When will the users revolt aganist this protective measures restricting playback only on a single dedicated device...?
It not the general protective measure, its the playback issue.

In fact (here in Scandinavia) a few government based organisations are persuing Apple for their Itunes songs (to make them playable on all mediaplayers). Didn't France to something as well?

(ok, sorry for doing all this DRM crap... lets keep it technical and tvix)

Once again updated thanks to Crivens for the clarification:

Coming features is features that someone has spoken with tech support about( or they posted on website/forums) and received a reply that it is coming soon. Wishlist features are features user would like to see and of course shot down features are features requested and the reply was "no plans to do so at this time." Newly added to the list. Bug fixes and speed tweaks. Speed tweaks are of course of lowest priority unless it severly impacts use as I think most users usually prefer new features or fixing bugs, to eekeing out every absolute ounce of performance via speed tweaks etc and of course that limit may have alread been reached due to hardware limitations.

Just curious has anyone actually experienced the bug mentioned?

Coming features:
The ability to move files from an external hd(s)/flash drive to Tvix 5000's internal HD.
Shoutcast.
Thumbnails for photos and video.

Wishlist Features:
UPNP
The ability to move files from the Tvix 5000's internal HD to an external hd(s)/flash drive.

Bug fixes:
In reference to firmware 1.8.5 "This version has problem to play files from USB external device, so if you play most files from USB device, we recomend not to use this version."

Speed tweaks:
Faster ftp/file transferring
Faster picture opening.

End result: My TVIX in the family room can see and play all the files on the four hard drives internal/external on my HTPC upstairs. Next will be to create PhotosC...PhotosF and MusicC...MusicF.

Hi

Can someone recommend where to buy one of these? I don't see them on the TViX USA online store for some reason.

Thanks

I just got through trying to purchase through:
http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/video/tvixm5000.asp
Unfortunately there were out of stock till mid October and told me a Korean holiday is going on. Canceling my order was really easy and they were very quick to repond. Unlike a lot of places they had not charged my card, since they hadn't shipped anything. This was impressive, as a lot of places charge your debit/credit card and then tell you they are out of stock. So then I tried:

http://www.onlybestrated.com
They are also "On order (ETA 10 days)", I think I literally got the last one.
So far my experiences with dealing with both places has been great, onlybestrated shipping the product the same day even though it was late in the day. Also I e-mailed them to ask what processing OOS meant and they told me that my unit had already shipped(all same day). I will give feedback once I have received unit etc as I know a huge concern for me is who to do business with online and these forums are a great way to share buying experiences and finding out about the good dealers. Which also helps since a lot of the Dvico sellers don't have a lot of resellerratings feedback yet.

BTW: Kei Clark of digital connection, is a member of avsforums, and used to post in this thread, not sure if any of the other US retailers have reps present or not.

Hope that helped Kaizen28.

Just curious does anyone know if Tvixusa ever carried the 5000 after that posted statement about waiting for a hardware change?

I think maybe you thought I was complaining when I said"Though onlybestrated ships with the latest firmware preinstalled, I am somehow doubting this is on there heh. Which to me says a lot in the time I could order and get a unit to me a new firmware release occured." I meant, but perhaps poorly conveyed, that I was impressed that though my order shipped the same say I placed it in the time I will have actually got my unit a new firmware had been released. A company doing firmware releases often is saw as a good sign by me, especially when they actually tackle the requests the users are making for the product.

On a sidenote, I think the requests we make and the features/fixes that is pounded out from that will simply be things included in the next unit they sell(along with keeping this unit selling well) and thus is selling points for that unit and thus everyone benefits from firmware updates. Not to mention it gives the company a good perspective to future buyers who hope that product will also get the updates it needs.

On a swedish site linked from the hi-jack divx TVIX forum (I think Crivens and Menenator turned me on to this one), there is a new 4000 unit. It is more rectangular, but otherwise looks like a 5000. Might be a lower price point. Perhaps Dvico is getting ready to roll to the 5101 faster than we all thought.

I'm sure other site members will have more to say on this.

I do not remember what firmware the TVIX people sent the machine with. I agree that it is pretty cool to have a vendor update the machine for you.

Updating the firmware is really easy on this machine though. But as you pointed out (I just took a look) the unit is not showing on the TVIX USA web site anyway.

Now I'm thinking I will wait for the 5500; then put the 5000 on the downstairs video system. These toys are dangerous...

Can someone verify it will play my DVD's that I've ripped using DVD Decrypter + AnyDVD? (Yes I'd rather have them in ISO format than IFO.)

Thanks.

I seldom play IFO from 5000.

All my Decryptered DVD is in ISO format from DVD Decrypter or DVDshrink.

With DVD Decrypter, I will keep all the menu index and extra bonus. However, it use up a lot of storage space.

With DVD Shrink, I will remove all the menu and extra bonus without any compression to maintain the best picture quality.

In most case, ISO Image from DVD Shrink would be less buggy than ISO image from Decrypter since DVD Shrink will rebuild the ISO Image.

what is new in FW 1.9.0???

Crivens
10-06-06, 03:44 AM
Will install the latest FW tonight. I'm betting it sorts out the USB problem. Hopefully a couple of the requested items too (c'mon pre-generated thumbnails and copying from USB drive!).

Oh, and Nemesis, here is another request to add to your list. I basically just asked them if they could add an option when you store a text file in the same directory as a video file. Then when you press the information button it will also show the contents of this file. That way you can add extra info about the film/ program. Can't do without my Sky+ functionality.... Hmmm, if they actually do what I asked then you would end up with a video file (eg. starwars.avi), an information file (starwars.txt), and a pre-generated thumbnail file (starwars.jpg). That would be nice.

Damn,
I keep checking the firmware page for new uploads every day. And the one day I don't do it... a new firmware... maybe I should check more seldom? LOL.

Anyway, will try it out tonight/weekend.

Hi everybody,

I saw somewhere (difference 5000A and 5000U) :
"U - does not have a standby button on the top.
or possibly has it but you don't need to push it to power on after setting the main power switch to 1.
A - has a standby switch on the top which also needs to be pushed in order to start the unit after setting the main power switch to 1."

but in all cases (U or A) is it possible to switch OFF (stand by) and ON only with the remote control ?

Thank you.

Crivens
10-06-06, 10:11 AM
U does have a standby button on top, the difference is that when you switch it on using the "master" switch on the side then it will boot up without pressing anything else. A apparently will not boot up until you then press a standby button on the top or remote.

Yes, at least with my "U"'s then the remote control will put it into and out of standby.

Oh, and a question from me. With the FTP functionality you have to boot the Tvix up before it will work, but is there a command or something to get it to wake up rather than using a standby button? Seriously doubt it though as you normally need the FTP daemon software running to intercept the FTP requests.

As I noted before on the firmware the title was "It supports the EPG finally..."... no clue what this means as electronic program guide doesn't really fit eh?

Coming features:
The ability to move files from an external hd(s)/flash drive to Tvix 5000's internal HD.
Shoutcast.
Thumbnails for photos and video.

Wishlist Features:

Bug fixes:
In reference to firmware 1.8.5 "This version has problem to play files from USB external device, so if you play most files from USB device, we recomend not to use this version."

Speed tweaks:
Faster ftp/file transferring
Faster picture opening.

Hello everybody,
I am going to try it again....

I downloaded the following movie: IMAX.SPEED.WMV-HD.1080P.DTS of size 1906MB
But my TVix does not play it at all ! It just skips to the next movie.
After some investigation I found the following:

TVIXManager says:
WMV3, 1440x1080, 23.98Hz, DTS, 2audio, 754 Kbps(CBR)
Message: WMV3 Video Codec not supported.
Cannot support more than 800 pixels of width.
Cannot support more than 414.720 pixels of width*height.

GSpot says:
Video: Codec: WMV3, Name: Windows Media Video V9
Audio: 0x2000(AC3 dolby Laboratories Inc) AC3, Info: 48000Hz 448 kb/s total (5.1 chans)

So I would say the TVix should be able to play it, but maybe some of you guys think different about this statement ??
Can anyone help ??

Threeother small questions:
1) And is there any special application to cut and save high definition videos in the same or maybe another format ?? Or can you just use the 'conventional' software packages ??

2) changing the background of the user interface is a cool thing to do, but only usefull while playing MP3's. But then the icons of the network and USB storage places just ruins the beautiful image.
I think hiding those icons in the top of the screen is a good thing while playing MP3's......some comments ?

3) The user interface is still not crystal clear on my screen. It looks like a low resoltion image on my PC. But all the movies SD and HD I play look great.
I use the 720i video output, but how can this be possible ?? I heard of one other person on this forum who had the same problem.....

Bye for now & all the best from the Netherlands,
Brey

Anyway, will try it out tonight/weekend.

M.
Quoting myself here... LOL

Anyway, just flashed to 1.90. And so far I have found that they have indeed implemented dynamic mounting points!!
I will look for new features as I go.

I managed to get the dynamic mounting point to work (DMP for short).
I tried it on a NAS (and only a NAS so far). In order to get it to work you need to add a tvixhd1 user and PW tvixhd1. As soon as I did that both Samba and NFS worked like a charm.
The share you like to access is added using the typical SMS (mobilephone). Input is easy and supports letters(capital and small), numbers and some special letters.
Will maybe try using the DMP on my PCs, but I recon you also here need to add the tvixhd1 user (and PW).
I wonder if they would add selectable usernames/Pw in the future firmwares (sound easier, since you do need to add a new user into your windows environment)

Oh, and it seems that network timeouts are fixed (it used th freeze when accessing non-existent network drives. Now it times out with an error). Great!

To sum up. My tvix has now added its value at least TEN times. It is now working as I hoped with direct access to my media library. Suberb!
(I will wait a few days until I start nagging about mp3 playback... LOL).
To all who wants these features, get it, flash it, enjoy it!

Well, as previously stated the DMP works.
Still not usable with samba and high bitrate HD. NFS works alright.

I have been trying for the last hours or so to get my shared partitions/folders to work.
I have gotten only so far that I in fact can see the shared partition. I.e. I can see the folder structure under my shared D: (share name is not D: if you wondered). O can also see movies under the same share.
No go on the movies.... The content of the folders are also empty.

So, until further I would assume that this function was not fully implemented yet.

Anyone else had any luck with this?

Anyway, FW1.90 is a great step forward. Looks more stable (have yet to reboot due to freezes etc)

Update:
Ok, played around somemore. This time with photo and music.
Not sure that this is the finished product, since I experience some instability here.
Either way, photos seems ok. Nothing new, although more unstable. Had to reboot a few times.
Music however, things have changed. They have implemented covers...
Well, in a fashion that it takes the photos within your album folder and shows it in a sideshow fashin, ending with the last one. No need to have a special name or anything. Looks ok. A bit unstable (crashes everytime I select a specific album folder, it tries to load the jpg but crashes. It's the only crash though).

Will keep you posted if I find more... but its a beta... ;)

And is there any special application to cut and save high definition videos in the same or maybe another format I use XiliSoft's Video converter software. Works a treat for anything that wouldn't play on the Tvix. I also own WinAviVideoConverter which takes advantage of my dual core system (uses 80% rather then 40% of total CPU) to encode DivX, but I found I was getting lip sync problems. XiliSoft does the job (as well as a DVD ripper which I also have and recommend) well and apparently will support dual core in the future.

Oh, and I use Virtual Dub to get rid of the adverts when I grab stuff from satallite. It took me a while to find it, but there is an option to output to a new file using the same sound and video codecs of the original file. Encoding then takes like a minute for a 45 minute program rather than the 20 minutes or so to totally re-encode. It's also identical to the original in quality rather than introducing new compression and artifacts on something that has already been compressed. Basically I use a DVD burner to take from the satalitte box (built in HD but no way of extracting digitally), then use Xilisoft's DVD ripper to turn into a DivX file, then Virtual Dub to get rid of the adverts making sure I use the direct stream copy mode for audio and video. No problems.

Someone translated the Korean explanation of 1.9.0. Apart from an amusing underdeveloped genitalia section (honestly!) and lots of stuff about the EPG there was this:-
File list ICON mode support 1. It makes the empty file which is icon.tvix in the folder and it puts. 2. The reporter it makes the .jpg extension file of the name which is identical with the file which it does in ICON modes and it puts. (Example) makes case movie.jpg which is movie.avi and Holy s**t. Does this mean thumbnails? It's sort of what I requested, but does it work? Someone said they tried it but it didn't work, but perhaps there is an exact size that only works, like 720x480 with tvix.jpg? I have to rip apart my server PC and replace lots of components this afternoon, anyone else want to have a go? Please..... :)

How can I help?

I can try to run a few movies from the NAS with tvixhd1 write-access. Do not have an internal drive in the tvix either.

But as mentioned they are at least doing something with thumbnails (playback of music with jpeg background (normally a jpeg cover).

Note that I just upgraded and all my settings were wiped including network and tv type (was 16:9).

Couldn't get the movie.jpg working. Used an example like StarWars.avi and StarWars.jpg but it didn't show as the icon, just as usual with the jpg file in the menu list. I'm betting it will be an exact icon size. Eg. 50x50 like I suggested. This would match tvix.jpg which has to be exactly 720x480 to work. Just wait for their documentation online.

Hehe... its more in the direction that everything was so perfect that I didn't want to spoil the good time I had.

Mp3 playback as most of you know is not the best. It works, yes, but in a crude way... too crude for my likings (but then again I seldom listen to music, so who am I to complain). I'm happy today since I now for the first time can access all of my NAS directly (no PC in the loop) using NFS (and samba).
First time ever!

But its beta, at least for the cover jpgs during musc, and samba access into shared folder(s) on a PC.

An interesting update. I'm happy. I'll have a beer to celebrate ;)

G'Day all.

Thanks for the pointer that FTP programs can in fact delete files on the TVIX. Just a simple mouse click in fact. I do not know how I missed something so obvious.

The FTP on the TVIX seems to time-out on long file transfers (over 2 gb). Is this a size issue or a time issue? Can the time outs for FTP be adjusted?

To all participants in this forum, I say thanks. We all help each other out with our cool toys.

By the way, if this 4000 unit exists, doing the math it should be about $75 less than the 5000 based on adjusting for the relative currency differences. Somebody here did not like the round shape of the 5000, so again if it exists the 4000 should do the job. Personally, I like the rounded shape. It fits "just so" into a narrow space in the hifi cabinet.

Since I am rambling on, how would the feature to allow transfers to/from the attached usb unit work. Would it be controlled from an external PC?

Thumbnails for .iso files works fine. Although the wallpaper and all other types of files in the folder do not appear after switching on this feature.

Simply create a file called icon.tvix in the folder with the .iso file and then name the relevant .jpg art work the same name as the .iso file.

I used the following command line to create the icon.tvix file:
fsutil file createnew icon.tvix 1

The folder will therefore contain for example:

The Apartment (1960).ISO
The Apartment (1960).jpg
icon.tvix

This was all guess work so I hope there are some other features when we see the documentation!

Ang on, so whats the tvix file for? Just to say "I want to use icons in this folder"? Slightly daft, but guess it's liveable. But then you can't have a tvix.jpg wallpaper? That isn't great though. I mean surely they should keep the tvix.jpg functionality but just forget about doing icons for video files called Tvix. That would work.

Does it just replace the standard icon for video (ie. really small), or do they look bigger? You know, something more like a DVD cover selection screen.

I just tried it on my Enemy of the State folder which has RAW DVD files in it. I put the medium size (from amazon) enemy of the state. jpg and made another enemy of the state .jpg into icon. tvix and the VTS files all changed to mid sized Reel of Film Icons with a mid sized yellow Folder with an Up arror (Up Folder) in my Enemy of the State folder. WOW!
Now if it would only work another way... because I don't want to see a whole bunch of REEL icons. I have to move over to them and it lists what the icon is. But it won't play the movie now unless I put it back the way it was and remove those two files I added.

Yeah, got it working for an avi file. Noticed though that folders cannot get an icon mapped (unless is different method). Bit annoying as you can't see the folder name until you highlight it.

I sent a support email. Basically asked how to use icons for folders, how to use tvix.jpg for wallpaper in a thumbnail folder, and what the icon sizes are on the screen (otherwise wasted processing for resizing). Hopefully they have different methods or will fix in the next FW.

Report it to Tvix support. Might not be a timeout if it happens at 2gb for the both of you, but perhaps a file size limit. Is the internal HD formatted to FAT32 or NTFS? Could be a limitation there if using FAT32.

My 5000 is formatted for NTFS. This is on the only format to choose for hi def files, which as we all know are quite large.

I am experimenting with smart FTP (had been using seagull ftp). I do like the way smart FTP lets you store the ftp password (six digit number). Seagull FTP requires that the number be input each time.

On a separate topic, it looks like a number of the firmware features for 1.90 are aimed at the new hi-def recording attachment.

Crivens
10-08-06, 05:57 PM
Nemesis, you can add to your list 60hz output for PAL as a request. Basically when playing an NTSC file you get very slight juddering especially on camera pans. It's almost not even noticeable unless you really look for it, but would be nice to eliminate. It is because NTSC files output at 60hz and PAL works at 50hz. Tvix does a *far* better job than my BLT and it is so very nearly smooth, but not quite. If I output in NTSC mode then I get a slight green tinge to everything (common problem with this sort of thing). But if there was a 60hz output option for PAL then hopefully that would get rid of both problems.

Don't hold your breath for much faster FTP transfers. The M-5000 ethernet port is only 100 Mbps and the current FTP speed is up to about 30 Mbps depending upon your LAN setup. A factor of two might be possible, but would be hard to get reliably.

Regarding information from a text file:-
Thank you for the idea. However, currently we do not have plan for this
features. Anyway I will report this to our engineer for their reference.Well, it was only an idea. Just thought it would be a nice touch and probably fairly easy to implement on a quiet friday afternoon :)

Regarding my thumbnail questions:-
I have read lots of posting on AVSForum. ;-) You found the 1.9.0 which is beta version and released on Korea only.

1. I will check with my engineers. Thank you for the feedback and idea.

2. The size is 100 * 136. and the maxmum supported size 720 * 480.

3. I will check about this issue.Thought it might be beta. Interesting they read here. :) The 1st answer is about definable icons for folders. Hopefully they will do it. 2nd is on size of icon. Will now convert all to 100x136... 3rd answer is about wallpapers not working when using thumbnails.

All in all good stuff.

Also does it FULLY support the menu structure?Apparently. I've never ripped a DVD to do this myself (iso, ifo, whatever format) just gone straight to DivX. At the end of the day though, if your £20 DVD player from the local supermarket can handle DVD menus etc from a DVD disc, then replicating the same thing with the same data held on a hard disk can't be that hard. I'm guessing the hard bit is getting access to the code to emulate it, or just having to simulate it (more likely to go wrong). If you look through this thread though people seem quite happy with it for doing what you say.

is it possible to use an USB WLAN Stick to make the TViX ready for WLAN? I know, the transfer rate of WLAN will be to slow for videostreaming, but I think it is the easiest way to connect the TViX to a network, because other devices are a bit far away. :D

Can I ask a stupid question?

I have an older Toshiba TW40X181 TV set. Component inputs only.

With this TVIX box, could I sent the signal from my PC to the TVIX via DVI, and then the TVIX would send the signal to the TV via component?

If so, it would prevent me from having to buy a transcoder thingy

Thanks
