kraspor 11-11-06, 05:11 PM Audio playlist question.
The manual notes that playlists can be created using Winamp. Can playlists be created using any other programs, especially itunes? Or possibly musicmatch?
I am not much of a Winamp user. Or can I create a playlist in itunes and export it to Winamp format somehow?
I always update my MP3 section on the tvix and i have it music/artist/album/songs but im dying to get a real "shuffle" function. Like random of all Mp3 without have to use winamp or other malware to create a playlist that will be outdated the next morning.
Any1 posted this to tvix development team?

the tvix remote has a shuffle key that toggles the shuffle function for mp3 files. how is this different from what you want?
converse 11-12-06, 09:33 AM QUESTION 1:
have installed 1.9.8kor and works like a charm. I love the thumb preview feature for movies.
However the "folder up" icon sucks when in "icons.tvix" mode, with poor transparent borders
is there a way to customize the icon of folder? where are hidden the graphical files of the GUI in the TVIXM5000?
EDIT, QUESTION 2:
is there a way/place to hide a folder from the GUI.
I use the M5000 for PC files backup purpose too, and don't need/want to see them on my TV (I don't think the renaming the file or folder ".name" works, as there is a ".trash"folder at the root level which is fully visible and browsable
converse 11-12-06, 04:55 PM I found the way to solve QUESTION 1, it was on the dvico website.
Anyway, they say that the background of the interface is gray C8C8C8, and that you must you this color as background in your icon if you want it to look like transparent.
but on my 1.9.8 kor firmware the background is dark blue.
Has someone the exact reference of color of this blue?
oferlaor 11-13-06, 08:27 AM noticed a lot of lipsync errors recently.
Switched back to 1.9.5 for now.

It only shuffles the songs in the current folder i am in. Did i miss something else maybe? :)

Well, have you tried the Shuffle button while playing one of the "soon to be outdated" playlists?
If that works it must prolong the life of the playlist quite substantially ;)
Please tell me how it works before I create large amounts of huge playlists...

Crivens 11-14-06, 03:47 AM However the "folder up" icon sucks when in "icons.tvix" mode, with poor transparent bordersReport this to tvix. The more reports the better and they normally do something after a while. I reported this a month or so back requesting the abilitity to change the up folder icon. They said probably not as no-one else had requested it.
Has someone the exact reference of color of this blue? That isn't what they meant. Basically if you use a png file rather than jpg then any pixel in the png that is the colour they quoted will appear transparent.

thompa74 11-14-06, 10:08 AM I just wonder if there are any new news about the tuner to the 5000a??
Heard that they gonna sell it in europe but i dont know any date of the release and no price???
Anyone who knows??
flabingo 11-14-06, 06:40 PM I have a linksplayer and I picked a different firmware which enabled me to enjoy upscaling. It has the sigma chip and I wondered what firmware should I use if I buy a TVIX unit. I am ready to buy the unit. The customer service with Linksplayer is limited and this product sounds like a step forward. Thanks in advance for your advice
thompa74 11-15-06, 03:31 AM Posted a question about the tv-tuner to tvix 5000 on the official tvix page:
Hello
First of all I just want to thank you for the greatest product ever in Tvix 5000a. Its just an amazing machine!!!!
I have one question for you: when do the HB-100A tv-tuner comes to europe (Sweden)?
Thanks/
Thomas
Hello Thomas,
I am glad you like M5000A. We are almost done with this, and will go field test in this month. I think it will be Jan 2007, but I am not sure.
Regards,
Eric
Like the news very much!!!! It will make my tvix complete here at home
pantherman007 11-15-06, 04:56 PM Ok, I see your point now. Your own personal comedy central type channel.
Send DVICO a request (or get it into the sticky thread in this forum). Maybe you are lucky.
Great shows btw! (if I only could find the time to see them all)
I have been wondering to make a HTPC, for the fun of it, mainly due to some abandon HW from my last upgrade. But it is hard to get there, since the tvix is doing most of what I need. It is fun to build, but a pain with all the SW ;)
Again, good luck to you.
Good news. DVICO responded to my question and said that the M5000 can already do what I wanted - m3u playlists aren't limited to audio files, but can handle video as well. So last night I successfully created a playlist that included video from multiple directories, set the unit to shuffle, and voila' - my own personal virtual TV channel. :D
originalsnuffy 11-15-06, 10:48 PM What software did you use to create the playlist?

pantherman007 11-16-06, 02:28 PM What software did you use to create the playlist?
So far I've just used Winamp to create a few. There's no real mystery though - they're really just text files with an m3u file extension, and an audio/video file listed on each line. A few years ago I wrote some VB scripts that parsed through directories and autogenerated playlist files for any MP3s found. I may try to dust that off and reuse here. If so, I'll post an update with the source code for anyone to use.
A small wrinkle is that right now the unit is showing the full path when the file is spooling up and/or the Info button is pushed. Something like:
\net1\video\Television\South Park\Season 1\South Park S01E01 (OAD 1998-03-12) - Cartman Gets an Anal Probe.avi
With the full path included, the string is usually too long and gets cutoff. I'll probably log a request with DVICO to have the firmware exclude the path and just show the file name itself. That's a minor compliant, though - the core functionality is all there.
originalsnuffy 11-18-06, 05:37 PM So at the suggestion of a number of member, I purchased a dvi-hdmi cable. The TV has two hdmi inputs; and I used a known good working input.
It appears that for this to work; I need to set the 5000 to 1080p/DVI. Is this the only setting that works?
So here is the new problem. I am getting green sparkles at times in the picture; seems to be in darker areas.
I don't get this effect with the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD over HDMI (I have tested this on both HDMI inputs).
Anybody else experience this? Any thoughts?
Pengwyn 11-18-06, 06:54 PM Hello fellow 5000 fans,
Was just wondering if there would be ANY way, to have the TViX use a USB Wireless adaptor? That way, I could just send stuff to and fro from my computer without having to pull all this networkcable through the house...
Cheers,
Willy
Guy Kuo 11-18-06, 06:55 PM Sparkles suggest that the particular combination of cables, cable length, and the signal transponders in the display and source are not transferring all the digital data correctly. Usually, one can solve it by swapping to another cable, a slightly different length of cable, or adding a signal repeater if the cable run is longer. Sometimes two seemingly equivalent cables differ enough that one will work while the other won't. It's essentially impossible for a consumer to measure the cable characteristics so one is left with swapping cables and changing cable lengths (and adapters) until a combination that works is arrived upon.
A several inch cable length difference or going to a dual link cable can sometimes do the trick. In long runs, the cable itself acts as a filter network and clever manufacturers set the cable length to something that transfers correctly rather than an arbitrary, exact 6, 10, 20 or 30 feet. Each device's transponder may differ so a solution that works for one model of display and source may not quite work for another. This is particularly acute for the run lengths used in home theaters.
Pengyn - All you need to purchase is a wireless gaming adapter - technically this is a wireless bridge but generally they are sold as for connecting games consoles to your wireless networls. Netgear/Linksys both make one. I bought one from bestbuy a couple of weeks ago and it works great.
As numerous people have mentioned wireless g works fine for transferring files and for some people SD stuff (DVD etc). If you want to watch HD files over the network though you need a wired connection. Some people have also reported the powerline 200Mbps Netgear units work well for them. At $200 though they are not cheap.
A wireless USB driver by the way would not work as the Tvix does not have the drivers to support this.
Hope this answers your question.
originalsnuffy 11-18-06, 10:01 PM Guy,
Thank you for your note. At first, with the unit set at 1080i, no picture was transmitted at all. Then I tried 1080p; which in the TVIX menus is specifically noted for DVI. It worked; but with the sparkles.
Trying the "p" idea I then tried 720p; this worked without the sparkles.
So to confound matters I went back and re-tried 1080i; and lo and behold now it worked. This almost reminds me of troubleshooting computers; sometimes you can get the setting that you want to work only when you go to a lower resolution and then go back.
But I now know that 1080p will not work with this combination (at least with this cable).
By the way Guy, I really appreciate the contribution the the Imaging Science Foundation makes for the hobby. Keep up the good work.
oferlaor 11-19-06, 05:59 AM Guy,
The TVIX appears to be especially sensitive. Cables that work fine with other devices tend to create sparklies with the TVIX on specific resolutions. I believe it just has a slightly problematic DVI output and requires more care with the cables and resolutions that it needs.
I personally do not have a problem with it, but I am using my unit with quite a few display devices and did run into problems with quite a few combinations.
I know I've seen mention of Fast Forward and Rewind problems with the M5000-U earlier in this thread, but they seem to have been addressed by firmware updates. Not for me, however....
I have the latest firmware. I wanted to rip my various files into single (large) avi files so I could use the icon browsing mode of the unit to play movies, without all the misc. files showing up (like when using vob, inf, etc).
The files play OK, but the FF amd REW features are almost always useless. It seems that some of the smaller avi files play fine with FF and REW working, but all the larger ones don't.
I also tried to rip my movies into one large vob file, but his has problems as well. It seems the only way to get it to work is to rip with all the segmented vob and inf files, and keep each movie in a separate directory.
This destroys my goal of easy movie selection and playing by selecting one icon, to say nothing of the space lost by ripping to large vob files as oppossed to XVid or DivX codecs.
Am I missing something? I admit most of this video ripping and transcoding is new to me.
Thanks,
Paul

Do yo know what standard they'll implement?
I'd really like it to be a (DVB-T) "Boxer" tuner! :)
...and it should support recording to HDD!
Skulle vara helt otroligt bra isåfall :D

Hi Tolax,
Thx for your reply... I was wondering, since the TViX operates on Linux AND the sourcecode for the TViX's programming is readily available to the public from the DVICO main website, isn't there a Linux savvy fan here who could... PROGRAM support for a wireless USB stick or something like that?
That would be great. Wouldn't it?
Cheers,

Neatness would be the main advantage I suspect. If you look around you can get a wireless G gaming adapter for $49 or less. I got mine from BB but I'm pretty sure places like Tiger Direct etc regularly sell them at this level. FYI I get around 1500 KB a second transfer with mine. I use it for transferring files to the HD in the unit. In real world terms that means about 1Gb per 12 minutes.
thompa74 11-19-06, 04:54 PM It seems like the tuner things not so hot stuff in this thread...

do you have a link for the sourcecode?
originalsnuffy 11-19-06, 11:17 PM I've been wondering why my ftp throughput is only 1/4 to 1/3 that of tolax. My linksys g router is in the basement, so I've got a linksys repeater on the main floor (one floor up); fairly near the wireless g game adaptor (also linksys). Is it possible that the repeater is taking down the performance fairly severely?
Crivens 11-20-06, 03:56 AM Just transferred 28gb of data to my Tvix last night over USB2. Still took a while, so I left it. When I came back a few hours later it had finished. Everything worked fine but it would not switch off (even after unplugging USB). Had to use the manual switch. Anyone come across this?
Cheers

Hello Guy, another Guy here sorry, lets hope people don't confuse us -
This is really annoying me this sparkles problem. I have my M5000 very close to my TV and only have a 2meter cable, it is a very high quality one at that. The TV is mounted on the wall, and the cable goes through trunking - replacing it won't be very easy!
Looking on various forums, many many people have problems with the DVI output on the M5000 giving speckles (mine are white speckles) on a variety of display devices (mine is a Samsung 40inch hi def LCD TV). For connectivity reasons I cannot use component (the samsung component input is tied up with other stuff), and was absolutley counting on the DVI output to work. DVD image files are sometimes not watchable which defeats the object of buying the unit... FRUSTRATED OR WHAT!
No one seems to have a definitive solution, but many many people report that the same cable is fine with other devices.
This really DOES look like a generic fault, and I am wondering if it is grounds to reject the goods, I only bought mine 1 month ago.
Guy
originalsnuffy 11-20-06, 09:21 AM Guy,
For grins and giggles, I would suggest taking your resolution down one or two notches and see what happens. I found the sparkles at 1080p; but they were not there at 1080i or 720p.
Actually, I wonder, in what scenarios have users been successful with 1080p (cable types; monitors, etc.). This might help figure out exactly what is going on.
For what its worth, it seems to me that the DVI implementation on the 5000 is not entirely solid. I have no way of knowing is this is a hardware issue or a firmware issue; or some kind of funky systems issue (5000/cable/monitor combination). That is why I thought we should share data on working solutions to see what might be in common. (I figure that there are more non-working instances than working).
Pengwyn 11-20-06, 04:54 PM do you have a link for the sourcecode?
Yeah, I posted it in this thread a while back. In the manual on the dvico main site, there's a link at the end under GNU . Here it is: http://www.tvix.co.kr/gpl/
Lemme know what you come up with!
Cheers,
Peng

Well, I get them at both 720 and 1080 res, I tried 480 for a moment, but the picture was so much softer I could be bothered, defeats the object of having a scaling playback system and a hi def TV to only run it at 480.
Interestingly I have some hi def clips downloaded from the net which play fine with no speckles, at higher bit rates than my DVD ISO files, but I have used three different software packages to make the ISO files, and there is no difference. Plus component output is free from these speckles, so it is NOT file based.
it is content base though, in that I only get speckles in dark backgrounds, never in light areas of the screen.
I am SO cheesed off about this, I feel it could be grounds to reject the unit. I am trying to find another cable I can try, but and darned if I am going to buy one when I suspect therer is nothing wrong with the one I've got!
Another forum is also loaded with people complaining about speckles, and it is interesting that my question on the DIVCO web-site about this has not been answered.
tolgademir1 11-20-06, 07:58 PM I had an issue with sparkles as well, feeding into a Lumagen processor with a good quality cable. I ended up putting the HDTV repeater from Gefen and it solved the problem using the same exact cables as before. Gefen discountinued the hdtv repeater but the DVI booster they have is pretty much the same thing. Not a cheap solution but TVIX makes life really easy for my wife. I finally can retire the HTPC.
mkerdman 11-20-06, 08:21 PM I have a Dish 211 with the R5000 mod that captures MPEG4 (Starz-HD) HD.
Does the TViX 5000 play MPEG4-H.264 HD files?
Also, does it play back HD files in the MPEG2 .mpg file format?
Thanks!
oferlaor 11-21-06, 06:33 AM I think the speckles are due to a problem in the connector or internal cabling. I only see it on my unit with 1080P output (Everthing else works fine with run-of-the-mill cables) and on all the displays I've seen.
In situations where there were issues, it was always a cabling or specific display related issue. Replacing the unit didn't resolve the problems, but cable changes did.
A friend of mine had the sparklies problem and solved it by having the unit go through a cheapo powered DVI splitter (acting like a DVI extender in this case). The sparklies just went away. Could be low voltage levels on the unit that the splitter fixed.
DVDwizard 11-21-06, 10:52 AM The Sigma chip in the TVIX is running at the ragged edge of its capabilities when trying to do 1080p. Frankly, I'm amazed it works at all.
720P is much more likely to work well.
(My company develops Sigma-based devices, so I'm pretty familiar with their limits.)
originalsnuffy 11-21-06, 11:26 AM I am inclined to think that DVD Wizard is on the right track; that the processor is being maxed out. Most of my HD material is from PBS HD; I do not know if the broadcasts are natively 1080i or 720p; but they aren't 1080p. So I guess I shouldn't really care about the 1080p issues.
Now for the 5500...I would care. It seems to me that this machine should offer native HDMI not just DVI; and handle 1080p quite well with a number of codecs.
The dish mod mentioned above was interesting...a sign of things to come as adventurous users try to find ways of getting access to hi def material.
I also had the green sparklies problem with the dvi out when set to higher than 480p with my sanyo plv-z2, I tried "everything" to no avail. So I had resigned to using component and was looking into high end component switchers when I found a DVI analog cable(looks like regular dvi but with less prongs, @ monoprice.com)...works like a charm, I would say a 30% picture quality increase over component! Looks easily as good as what I saw when using dvi-d cable on friends tv sets that didn't have the sparkle problem. It was like having a new player AND new movies, started watching everything over again.
Hope this helps somebody:)

DVI analogue cable? does this connect the DVI (digital output) of the TViX to the component input on the TV which is analogue. For me this won't work because the component input is tied up with my DVD player and I don;t have a switcher. Or does it connect to the VGA type 15 pin DSUB on my TV, now that would interest me!. How do you configure the DVI output of the TViX to output analogue as opposed to digital signal.

Thanks, can Tinhan please confirm, if I get a DVI to VGA adaptor like
http://www.datapro.net/products/1145-A.html
Can I then use the TVIX to connect the VGA type input on my LCD TV, I presume I need to set the TVIX to output an analogue signal to the DVI port instead of a digital, or does it do that anyway on to the different pins.
Basically, I am asking if Tinhan could give a little more information about what he is specifically doing.
DVI to analogue input, is that to the TV set analogue VGA (15pin Dsub),? or something else? and how is the TVIX re-configured for such analogue output.
Thanks
Hi,
using the Tvix FAQ and Google you can learn that the Tvix DVI port is of type I.
http://www.tvix.co.kr/eng/faq/Default.aspx?act=RD&id=65&pg=0&CATID=3&SCATID=1
I.e both analogue and digital.
Then you just have to select DVI output.
Regarding green speckles problem I just tried a 4 m Supra DVI <-> HDMI cable to a Marantz receiver and then to a Hitachi TX something (300?).
It worked perfect for 1080i and 1080p. Maybe the trick is to have something inbetween Tvix and display?
Or are the Tvix units random in quality?

Yep, thats the plug you need...(try monoprice.com, same thing only $4)
When you first hook it up it will go all green, go to the tvix setup screen and change output color mode from ypbpr to d-sub and viola!
Glad this helps :)

Thanks, well I am in the UK, but I just called my friendly local computer store and he's got one for 5 british pounds, so I will drop by and collect it before he closes.
Interestingly, my LCD TV is mounted on the wall with all cabling buried in trunking, changing the DVI to HDMI cable would be a nightmare, but when I installed it, I connected a real high quality 5 meter VGA cable to the back of the TV, it;s spare, the idea being that I could plug my laptop to the LCD TV on occasions, now I hope to use it for this.
If this works, it will be the second time forum members have solved sticky problems with the TVIX M5000 for me.
Fingers crossed, and I will update you later.

Gitlemat 11-22-06, 12:08 PM Hi,
have any of you noticed problems when playing xvid files with more than one consecutive B-Frames?.
Everytime that I try a xvid file with 'Max consecutive B-VOPs=2' it produces jerky playback. :(
It works perfectly, so far, with any other kind of video file that I've tried. I've contacted with Dvico's support and they've tranferred the issue to their enengineering guys.
Thanks,
/Sergio.

I've tried an adaptor i had and connected to my plasma it produces a decent enough picture....just slightly softer than using a digi signal.

I don't know about B-frames, but all the xvid files i've had that have had jerky playback has been due to the 'suggested audio buffer size' being zero or too low.
Passing the file through virtualdub sorts the problem out as it re-writes the header of the file increasing the buffer size.

Passing the file through virtualdub sorts the problem out as it re-writes the header of the file increasing the buffer size.
Interesting.... I'll check if all the problematic xvids have this suggested audio buffer size' set to zero or too low.
It would be great if this is also my problem!
Thanks.
BreyMaastricht 11-23-06, 04:51 AM Hi all !!
I have noticed it now for a couple of times and I thought I was going to get crazy!
But now it is a returning problem. Listen:
My Tvix is next to my beautiful Philips LCD screen. It is a 32" PF9830 with Pixelplus 2. I can recommand it to everyone ! One of the beautiful features of this LCD is its Ambilight functionality which generates light effects around the LCD that matches the video contents.
But after I moved my Tvix together with my LCD to the other side of my living room, the remote control of my Tvix doens't work any more as long as my ambilight is turned on. Before I moved over the equipment I have never had a problem with receiving the remote control signals of the tvix RC.....
When I turn off Ambilight with the Philips RC, the Tvix RC works again !
Is this strange or not ?? Or is there a scientific explanation for this ??
All the best,
Brey (Netherlands)
guygamps 11-23-06, 05:23 AM I've tried an adaptor i had and connected to my plasma it produces a decent enough picture....just slightly softer than using a digi signal.

I didn't make it in time last night to collect the DMI to VGA adaptor, will do it today and try it later this evening.
Before I do that.....a question for am1968 and Tinhan (thanks for your continued help)...
The native resolution of my LCD TV is 1366 x 768, however this is NOT available as an output resolution from TVIX. once connected via analogue DSUB to the LCD's Dtype input, what output setting have you got your TVIX at for best result?
I will be going on the DIVCO site today and requesting a 1366 x 786 res setting for output, since this is a very very common resolution, nearly all the LCD and Plasma panels I considered from many manufacturers were this resolution. A few lower, and a few higher, but mostly 1366 x 768.
Regards
Guy
I used 1024x768 as this is the screen res of my plasma and would suggest you try the same.
I know that my tv will rescale any signal input that doesn't match it's own res and i assume that your lcd would do the same.... whether this would cause any strange effect to the picture i'm not sure, only thing i can say is try it and seem what happens. Sorry i can't be of any more help.

I have had this hooked to a friends 50" plasma(1366x768) and best results were found with the 720p setting, any higher and it looked offset and blurry, I know, it feels like you're wasting potential, but 48 pixels? You won't miss 'em :)
Hope dvico takes your advice though...
Meenenator 11-23-06, 10:45 AM Hi again... I've been a bit quiet lately, but have been observing you...
(Changed priority from home cinema til PC for a while now...)
Allright, to the question.
I'm using my Tvix with a DVI-HDMI cable, connected to a VP30, and then to my PJ with HDMI.
Works like a charm. Haven't tried 1080p output, so I can't comment on that wrt white/green issues (VP30 doesn't accept 1080p input).
But my issues are wrt the auto-input-select on the VP30. When the tvix is in stand-by (i.e connected, but not powered), it still is somewhat hanging on such that the auto-select function on the VP30 is not selecting my DVD which uses component. I have to select manually component 1(DVD), and then back to HDMI 2(tvix). I can live with that, but my spouse do get furious sometimes when things do not work as planned (and it always happens when I'm not around). Not very WAF...
When I power of the tvix (power-button on the back) everything is ok, but then I have to manually turn it on...
Any ideas in that respect.
Which lead me onto the real question.
I read with interest about the DVI-A output in the last few posts. I assume a DVI-A to D-SUB adapter, and then D-SUB to 5BNC to the VP30 analog input will work. I will try it tonight (The VP30 do not have a D-SUB input, just a 5BNC and a few component inputs).
But, when we now are speaking analog. Will it be possible to output 480/576i on this DVI-A output? (or is it only for the component output?).
Some said that DVI-A is of better quality than component, and I personally find the component a bit soft. I selected to stick with 480p and DVI rather than 480i and component since it was a better picture even if I had to bypass the ABT102 de-interlacer in the VP30.
************** Update: **************
It did not work with the VP30, as it only accepts 480P and higher. I.e. no "i" on that input. I did get a picture on 480p+ but it did look fuzzier than the digital picture.

Isn't it best to select an output which closest matches your screen. I.e 720p for a 768 screen. The screen then have to scale only a few lines.
It does not waste'em, it will scale from 720 to 768.
Doesn't the tvix have a few other resolutions as well, when using DVI. I recall 1024x768, 800x600, 1280x1024(?), as well as 720 and 1080i/p.
But it would be a good idea to ask DVICO about 1366x768, 1365x768 and those... in order to get pixel mapping from the tvix.

The VP50 allows to assign priorities for the auto input selection. I wonder if this feature is also available on the VP30, since they are very similar. If so you could give component1 input a higher priority than the connection for the tvix.
I am also considering the tvix (either a 4k or 5k) to pair with my VP50 / Ruby setup. The tvix would replace my HTPC (TT+ffdshow), as I am looking for a simple and robust solution to playback networked DVD files. I am wondering how the tvix stacks up against a high quality (PQ wise) DVD player. Output would be 480p - digital (as 480i from the tvix is not possible). Upconverting to 1080p (+ PReP) would be done by the VP50.
Do you have any insights you could share?
Thanks!

Alex, thanks for a reminding me about the priorization of input. Completely forgot about that. It did the trick! (you saved the day, and the days to come!)
Had a little run with a DVI-DSUB dongle, and DSUB-5BNC into the component 3 input. Again... I was ahead of myself. The VP30 off course do NOT accept interlaced signal onto that port. *hitting myself on the head*
Although I got a picture when running 480p (not 576p), and 720p and 1080i. Looked fussy... so I go back to DVI-HDMI cable.
An now onto your question.
Nice setup you got there BTW. Ruby and a VP50... would love to get those as well. (buy her a diamond ring at the same time should do it...LOL).
I am running my DVD player (HK DVD25 thru component). Not sure how high PQ that is anymore. I think it is good enough, at least better than a (networked) DVD from tvix. Maybe due to the ABT102 card which is active when using DVD.
I did try a Pio 696 (the one with 480i output). Not so much sharper than my DVD25 w/comp.
With PRep, you might be more lucky since I feel that I see all kinds of de-interlacing effects (could be me, and the fact that I know).
(with PRep just make sure you do not scale anything before re-interlacing)
Why 480p? Why do not go with a 480i HDMI capable player (or SDI).
In any case the tvix is fairly cheap (at least wrt Ruby/VP50). For networked DVD I find it quite useful, no problems what so ever (from my NAS). Just the de-interlacing aspects.

Are you saying that the TViX with DVI-HDMI gives you an inferior PQ than your STB via component, both run through the VP30/ABT102? Is so this would be very disappointing and probably kill the TViX option. For me PQ is key.
I am looking for a networked DVD player. Unfortunately, none of them offer SDI or even 480i over HDMI/DVI (with the exception of the kaleidoscope system, which is rather $$>). So the closest I can get in regards to unprocessed signal is 480p via HDMI - hopefully PReP will correct the deinterlacing artifacts induced by the player.

Alex,
Sorry if I have a mislead you.
The output is good from the tvix, esp. the DVI output. The comp. output felt a little fussy vs DVI.
Keep in mind here that I'm using DVI from the tvix (either 480p/576p, 720p or 1080i) into the HDMI port on the VP30. Doing that I loose all the suberb features of the ABT102 card.
When using a DVD player, the ABT102 card is doing its magic.
I did compare 480/576i output (Comp) from the tvix (and hence using the ABT102 card) towards 480/576p output (DVI), and I decided on DVI since it was sharper and generally better, even on the cost of losing the ABT102 magic. But you got PReP now w/1.01FW, so it should be good.
Although, keep in mind that my PQ req. could be different from yours. However, given the fact that I invested in a VP30, could indicate that I have some PQ req. ;)
In any case, at the moment I think tvix is the best out there.
Btw, I'm running 720p to a Hitachi TX200 PJ (if it should matter). Not a Ruby sadly...

guygamps 11-23-06, 04:59 PM Thanks, well I am in the UK, but I just called my friendly local computer store and he's got one for 5 british pounds, so I will drop by and collect it before he closes.
Guy
So, I got the DVI to SVGA adaptor, plugged it in and connected to the Samsung LCD TV and after a fair bit of fiddling around I got the menu screen up in green as tinhan said I would, and set the output to RGB (DSUB), I also set the resolution to 1024x768.
PLaying back a DVD ISO file, nice picture, no speckles but quite soft, by memory, it is exactly the same as the component output I looked at a few days ago, but I didn't A/B them today.
But when I looked at my hi res still photos, the resolution was noticeably lower than when I look at the same photos via DVI / HDMI running 720p, don't know why. 768 is greater than 720.
For this reason I have reverted to DVI/HDMI, and will try other methods to get rid of speckles.
Thanks for the advice though, it was definately worth trying.

Ahh, I think I got it now: the 102 card only works for 480i/576i sources. Since the DVI from the DViX only outputs a "p" signal you would need to go with its component out instead. PQ of this (comp + 102) however is not as good as "pure" DVI from the DViX.
Thanks for clarifying!

did you try removing the hard drive and booting without the drive installed?
One big thing missing is that there is no way for someone to search for a specific file on the TVix M5000. If i have many movies it is hard to find one without scrolling on all the contents of a specific folder.
I think this is a must have functionality. I have sent a question to DVICO for that and they have told me that they will put it on the request list.
If you think this is something critical send them a request also. If they have many requests maybe they will implement it.

Have you tried googling for it (I recon you have), and tried the things they suggested in the link I posted?

put the drive back in. hook up via usb to your computer. run scandisk and set it to do a complete scan including surface. this may sound like busy work, but i have run into these problems and they were fixed by doing a full 5 phase scandisk. on my 200gb disk, it took a while.
good luck.
btw, what firmware are you using? and you said you did a "safe mode" upgrade? to what?

the tvix seems to "remember" the last thing it was doing when it has an error condition and tries to re-start at the same point. if there was an error on the hd, you'll get stuck in an endless loop even without the hd installed. the tvix is still trying to get past that error from what my experiences have been. that's why i suggest fixing the hd error, and just a simple scandisk didn't help on mine eventhough it was almost new. after i tried the full suface scandisk option, everything worked again.
Hi,
I wonder if the very low LAN transfer speed from a PC to the TViX through FTP is normal... In no way I can go over roughly 3000 KB/s which makes a DVD transfer almost impossible.

It's just taken 18mins to transfer 3.4Gig via FTP...which is about average for me.
OK, thanks, same for me roughly... :(
I knew it was slow but not that slow. I read a couple of other threads mentioning this on this forum and on several others but none give the real speed.

Same question popped into my mind. I thought that the DViX chip was not capable of outputting a 480i signal via DVI, only 480p.
If 480i was in fact possible this would be awesome. (My VP is a VP50 and thought PReP was my only option in this case...)

Guy Kuo 11-26-06, 04:17 PM I had the ftp function make a mess of the file structure on the inboard drive. A bunch of lost clusters were induced after loading a videots directory. It seemed fine in operation, but when I hooked the TVIX up directly with USB2 and checked. Quite a mess was discovered. Fortunately, Disk Utility (OSX) was able to fix it.
A bit disappointing, I agree, is deinterlacing of video based material. On film based material it's usually okay.
rajanshirin 11-26-06, 06:39 PM I seem to be having a lot of occurences of losing audio while playing a DVD movie. All my DVD movies are backed up in ISO format using DVD Shrink. I have to reset the TVIX 5000 box and play the movie again to fix the problems. I am running with 1.95A firmware.

Since you are close to 2.0 i am guessing something major will happen.

Will there ever be a wifi module for the tvix?

Hello Tord,
We are final testing 2.0 version and will be release in Nov.
About wireless USB,
Our engineers are mainly working to support this, but I am not sure whether they can do it or not. Once, they sucess, I think you can buy general USB wireless model with specific chipset which we will announce. We are working hard. ;-)

Ofer, have you btw tried the tvix using xvid/divx at a non-DVD resolution?
I've read that Prep only works when the picture have not been scaled. And there are very few xvid's with 720x480 resolution or 720x576 for that matter.
Is the Tvix de-interlacing first, and then scale it to the selected output?
Could you comment on that?

originalsnuffy 11-27-06, 09:05 AM With regard to audio loss; I have this problem as do others. I don't know how to identify what specifically identifies the files with this problem. I have posted notices to TVIX; but I don't think they know how to replicate the problem and as far as I know they therefore have no plans to fix the issue. I think we users need to figure out some parameters of what is going on, and then we can ask them to fix this. The workaround is to feed the files into programs like dvd movie factory and re-create a dvd like structure around the problematic mpeg and vob files. This usually solves the problem. But it is clumsy.
originalsnuffy 11-27-06, 09:07 AM Say, this question is probably half TVIX 5000 and half general networking.
Every so often, my ftp transfer speed drops to a near halt. Sometimes re-setting the TVIX solves the problem, as will a reboot of the PC. But last night none of my usual fixes would work. The only thing that I changed recently is that I updated the usually deadly AOL software in the machine (spouse likes it....). But I don't see why that would kill the ftp transfer speeds.
Any suggestions of things to check? I reset the router, reset the cable modem (not that this should matter....). I am out of things to check.
Anyone know an easy way to change WMV8 files to WMV9?
I have about 200+ episodes in WMV8. I saw a couple of guides online that describe how to change to divx but I wondered if there was a simple way to just upgrade the codec to WMV9 that I belive the TVIX will play.
Thanks

I had the ftp function make a mess of the file structure on the inboard drive.
Interestingly I had the same issue last night and almost exactly the same situation. Normally I FTP over wireless but as I had a DVD9 to send over I thought I would cheat and bring the unit to the computer and use the USB. The unit had been working fine but when I connected to the computer it announced that a number of directories were corrupted. I rang a quick fix (wrong) and it erased about 40Gb of files. Mostly ones that I had transfered over the last two weeks.
I'll run a full check on it when I get the chance but I wonder if the unplugging of the system and then using the USB causes the issue. For safety I will probably avoid doing that again.
Anyone else have this issue?

oferlaor 11-27-06, 10:49 AM meenator,
I use TS 1080i exclusively. I haven't really seen that many problems with XVID when I tested it (without PREP).
VP30 will ultimately get a passthrough option, so if your display works well with HD, you should wait a while.
Guy Kuo 11-27-06, 11:14 AM I suspect the FTP function's implementation of file system writes is not quite correct in the TVIX unit rather than the use of USB. I think the TVIX corrupts the file cluster allocations in a manner that still allows it to understand where the files are, but isn't quite right for a PC. Hook it up to a PC and that corrupted file directory structure looks like a bunch of files aren't properly allocated and those files are at risk. I had a bunch of files linked into a directory in my trash. Fortunately, Disk Utility under OSX didn't delete the files, but fixed the directory structure leaving my files intact. No more FTP for me.
put the drive back in. hook up via usb to your computer. run scandisk and set it to do a complete scan including surface. this may sound like busy work, but i have run into these problems and they were fixed by doing a full 5 phase scandisk. on my 200gb disk, it took a while.
good luck.
btw, what firmware are you using? and you said you did a "safe mode" upgrade? to what?
hi..
Tried Scandisk in the way u described, no success, did a full format
still same problem, showing "BOOT" and nothing more.
I can acces my HDD using USB, upgraded FW 1.9.5 successfully.
Even tried a new HDD nothing seems to help.

Scandic24 11-27-06, 02:00 PM Yeah, I posted it in this thread a while back. In the manual on the dvico main site, there's a link at the end under GNU . Here it is: http://www.tvix.co.kr/gpl/
Lemme know what you come up with!

First, I don't know Jack about this code mumbo-jumbo so I passed it to a friend who's really into this kind of magic and asked him to take a look at it.
He says that this seems to be just some standard stuff - nothing interesting really...
He asked for the code that actually does the important stuff and said that he would be thrilled to sink his teeth in it and see what he could come up with. :D

kraspor 11-27-06, 03:48 PM A few things;
* Sound gets distorted when i use tvix volumebar over 25, insane, this was not an issue before 1.9.5
* Subtitles with <i></i> shows in full context
I use Wifi and get up to 2800Kb/s, its alright i guess then :)

Hmmm, I read somewhere about this. It is due to the fact that up to 25, the Tvix attenuates the signal and above that it amplifies it (digitally?).
Anyway Tvix themselves stated that just what you experience could happen and that's why the volume bar turns red above that.

This was not a problem in the past so its annoying. :)
And just to state, when at 24 and also 23 it still sounds distorted allthough some what less. Wich means it sounds fkd in the green area as well. I belive there is some problem with this firmware.
Beyond 22 i cant hear much unless i crank my system up really loud.
MP3 sounds worst, movies (divx) not so much.

It's always been this way with my unit, even before 1.9.5. I've always had it set to 25 and volume is about at the same as my other gear using toslink. So I don't have to crank up my system at all.
Are you using the analog output?

I confirm it, I have the same problem often. Until now, a TVIX reboot is OK for me, FTP transfer comes back to normal speed. It is a bug of the TVIX's software 100%.
As for a previous post I have made, nobody needs to search on the TVIX??? How can you manage to find the files if you have many of them?
As for a previous post I have made, nobody needs to search on the TVIX??? How can you manage to find the files if you have many of them?
I have all my files organized in a logical folder structure which makes it easy to navigate to a specific file.
Even if it did have a search function it would probably take longer to search for a file instead of just navigating to it since input would need to be done using a virtual keyboard.

Me too...Do you ever get an inconsistent stutter? I have a file(I use internal hard drive exclusively) that normally plays rock solid, then last night what I thought was a perfect file got all jumpy every few seconds, no real consistency or pattern, that I could detect anyway. Turned it off, let it cool down, played it again, now bigger gaps between jittering spurts but still there(?)
This HAS hapened before with a few other files(.TS 720p and 1080i only) but it seems to come and go...Anyone else?

And whats the new features on the FW??

Check it out. I see a shoutcast file ansd a internet radio file in this directory as well. I will try it tonight. it is version 2.0.3
Yiha!!!!!
So I've seen some folks mention audio dropouts, but I have a different issue.
I have a 5000, running 1.9.5, no internal hard disk. Connected to a 10/100/1000
ethernet switch. I've got my video files on an Infrant NV, ethernet at 1G.
With my Tvix, using NFS or CIFS (SMB) I can't play a video without it stuttering.
If I play the exact same video with my Zensonic 500 it plays fine. I was blaming
network congestion, but it seems to occur even on an idle network. Anyone
seen this issue? Suggestions? I've only had the Tvix a week, bought it after
being unhappy with the Netgear, Snazzi, Galaxy, and somewhat the Zensonic
based on people saying it played anything they threw at it...
Thanks.

originalsnuffy 12-01-06, 08:13 PM Anybody have any updates on the status of the 5101 and 5500?
Digital Connection has pre-orders for the 4000 now. Pretty good price it seems to me for what you get.
The Digital Connection site also lists some unit from Pixelmagic that look interesting. But nobody here seems to talk about the unit. There is one thread that implies that Pixelmagic's site implies bug issues. Given that we know the Sigma processor is hard to code; that would support staying a loyal TVIX/Dvico customer. I must admit; things with TVIX and DVICO often start off buggy but get progressively better over time.
So unless I hear otherwise, my next toy remains TVIX; the only question is which!
*Inquiring minds want to know*
TPeterson 12-01-06, 08:18 PM Says here (http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/video/tvixm4000.asp) that ETA of the 4000 is 12/20/06.

It runs fine.
The new FW has a new graphic interface. Other than that, there is an option to choose which controller to use. I guess you can use a 4000 remote as well.
Internet radio of course but it crashes if you don't have a LAN cable connected.
Other than that it seems the same.

Interesting. That's one thing I haven't tried. It isn't a great long term solution if it works, but I'll try setting my server to 100mbps.
Thanks! I'll let you know if it helps.
frosty_aw 12-02-06, 07:59 PM "With my Tvix, using NFS or CIFS (SMB) I can't play a video without it stuttering"
Sounds like a classic half-duplex at one end and full duplex at the other end problem.
Either do auto neg. in both ends or force to 100 full duplex in both ends. However, If you have a cheap switch it could be that you can't change this. Then you're only hope is that changing this in the Tvix is possible.

Hi, Can you explain how Shoutcast work? Do you provide a link for the streamming? What service/address did you try? If you connect the LAN, Do you receive a decent/Good quality?
It would be great to have streaming service working! :D
Thank you.
oferlaor 12-03-06, 06:24 AM amgra,
you put a PLS or M3U file anywhere. It contains the URL for the shoutcast station. You can download PLS files from shoutcast.com for example (just right click a station and select "save target as..." in order to save the PLS file instead of play it on your computer). You put these files on the TVIX and select it.
It works very well on MP3 stations.
originalsnuffy 12-03-06, 02:06 PM So are we going to need to rename this thread for the 4000 (which is a 5000 less the tuner docking capability).
What will we do when the 5101 and 5500 appear.
Anyway, I have ordered a 4000 unit. The pre-order price was right (about 2/3 of what I paid for the 5000).

Both devices are set to auto neg. Cheap switch :-) I can't find anyplace
on the Tvix that allows me to change, or even tells me what it's auto
negotiated, what speed it's at, or even if it think it's half duplex.
I will try both set to 100, and I'll also try a different switch. Not a switch that's any smarter, but a different manufacturer with different hardware.
thompa74 12-04-06, 06:23 AM Just wonder if its just shoutcast that can be played? I like listen to internet radiostations but all of them is using their own programmes to play online like live365.com. Can I listen to them on the Tvix right now???
Guess not...
All the big radio channels uses their own little programmes, frustration!!!
mathijs 12-04-06, 06:44 AM I've got a very simple question, yet it is hard to find the answer for me. I guess you guys could help me out..
I am planning to buy a TViX 5000 or 4000, and I wonder if it is already possible to zoom in your photos and to PAN/scroll/move through your zoomed photos with the cursor buttons. Also I want to know if it is possible tot rotate your photos. In the very first firmware these things weren't possible yet. Is it possible with the current firmware?
Thank you!
I didn't read the whole thread and my appologies, I wish there was a Features at a glance sticky that identified the features that work well.
I was just curious how the ISO Content delivery worked on this device.
Additionally does it support Cover Art Selection for the Movie, Album in say a movies or music directory?
Looking at the 4000 and very intersted, can any one comment on two features that I have identified above. All my movies are in ISO format, with a cover jpg in the folder. I'm coming from a PhotoBridge HD1000 and looking for something with DVI support.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thoughts on the 4000 vs an upcoming 5500?
Cheers,
Requis
Guy Kuo 12-04-06, 01:42 PM Photo zoom and pan already work. No, rotation is not possible. While it does display jpg's, the 5000 is very slow loading each image when faced with multi-megabyte images. It autoadvances through the images, but I haven't found an option to turn off the autoadvance. If I were actually going to show images, I'd prefer to hook up my computer and take advantage of the display software and speed of my laptop.
You can indeed use graphics to display a small version of the cover art for items or folders, but I haven't been impressed with the results. With larger numbers of items in a folder, not all the graphical "icons" will properly appear. Also, the low resolution icons images really don't look that great compared to the graphical display on my computer's DVD tracking software. It's a bit crude looking, so I simply leave mine free of graphics. I can find a movie much faster by name than by graphic anyway.
ajs6000 12-04-06, 04:57 PM Requis, I also have a Photobridge HD1000 (Roku really missed a great opportunity) and in terms of processing jpg's the HD1000 is far the superior product. I still have mine hooked up for this purpose.
The TVIX 5000 is however a very good DVD juke box. I have all my DVD's in .ISO format and it plays these without issue (with full menu etc support). It also does DTS (96/24) pass through (something the HD1000 never managed).
I have stuck with the Roku M1001/2000 for music streaming as I have my complete library in WMA lossless format (TVIX only supports lossy) and I don't want my plasma switched on in order to play music.
I would wait for the M5500 that's based on the SMP8634 chip that will give it the processor capabilities to excel at all 3 disciplines.

When are the 5101 and 5500 planned for introduction in the USA?
originalsnuffy 12-04-06, 07:57 PM The click throughs indicate that we should expectd the 5101 in Q1 2007. No word yet on a release date for the 5500. Also, looks like Dvico/Tvix is downplaying performance expectations for the 5101.
The second click through was more encouraging. Perhaps the 5500 could have HDMI as this is supported by the chipset!

I think MPEG4 H.264 will be the next big codec looking for HW accelerator quality playback in a Media Extender.
The blurb seemed to significantly play down the 5101 because of a lack of CPU and Memory.
We'll have to wait and see about the 5500.

Just got a PS3 and plan to replace M5000U as media center if possible.
The overall function of PS3 is really impressive. Here are some pros and cons to use PS3 vs M5000.
Remote Control
- PS3 remote controller support longer range (Bluetooth vs M5000U IR)
- No other remote can simulate PS3 Bluetooth Remote
- M5000U IR Remote can be learned by others
Internal Hard Disk
- M5000U (3.5") vs PS3 (2.5")
- M5000U can be upgrade to 3.5" 750GB IDE
- PS3 can be upgrade to 2.5" 160GB SATA
External Hard Disk
- M5000U (Support both NTFS and FAT32)
- PS3 (Support FAT32, no problem with 250GB Hitachi 3.5 IDE)
- PS3 (To use FAT32 exceed 32GB, IO-Data LinkFormatter is required)
- PS3 unable to support file exceed 4GB due to FAT32 limitation
Music & Audio Output
- PS3 able to rip CD to Internal Hard Disk (WAV PCM / MP3 / AAC / ATRAC) with CDDB information
- M5000 support MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg, PCM, M4A
- PS3 support visualization during playback
- M5000U unable to rip CD onto internal/external storage
- Both able to delete file with remote
- PS3 able copy music from external hard disk or memory card to internal hard disk
- PS3 allow bitstream/PCM via Optical or HDMI
- PS3 able to decode DTS-HD / DD-HD / SACD into Multi-Channel PCM HDMI Audio Out
- M5000 allow bitstream digital audio via Optical / Coaxial
Photo
- PS3 able to view photo from CF/SD/MS card and copy photo from/to internal hard disk
- PS3 response 10 times much faster to view photo than M5000
- M5000 do not have card reader but able to view photo from external thumb drive or using external card reader
Internet Browser
- PS3 able to view youtube and download music / photo / video onto internal disk, external hard disk or memory card
- PS3 able to use USB wireless keyboard/mouse for browsing, still need to use PS3 wireless controller for some function key
Network
- PS3 with built-in Wireless LAN
- PS3 support 10/100/1000Mbps vs M5000 support 10/100Mbps wire connection
- PS3 able to upgrade firmware via internal connection
- M5000 need to download firmware from PC and upgrade via internal hard disk or external storage
- M5000 able to use FTP / SMB for Network connection with Windows and MacOS
Video
- PS3 only able to support MPEG4 AVC / MPEG4 / MPEG2 / TS up to 1920x1080
- M5000 support DVD ISO / Video_TS / Divx HD / Xvid HD / WMV9 HD
- PS3 do not upscale DVD to 720p/1080i/1080p at this moment (might change via firmware upgrade)
- M5000 able to upscale DVD to 720p/1080i/1080p
- Video files can be copied from/to between internal hard drive and external storage
HDMI
- PS3 with native HDMI support
- M5000 support HDMI via HDMI/DVI Adapter
SACD
- PS3 support 5.1 Multi-Channel PCM (Non-compressed digital audio)
- M5000 unsupported
CD/DVD/Blu-ray ROM
- PS3 included
- M5000 supported external CD/DVD Drive
Traditional Chinese Support (Necessary for Chinese End user)
- PS3 do not have Traditional Chinese Menu at this moment (might able to upgrade via firmware)
- Both PS3 and M5000 Support Traditional Chinese Long Filename
- M5000 only support 80% Traditional Chinese Long Filename
- PS3 seems able to support 99% Traditional Chinese Long Filename
Maybe it's me that's stupid, but I think the PS3 - M5000 comparison is very stupid.
Apples and pears man....
And you forgot to compare the "small" detail of PRICE and availability....
All in all: Please don't turn this thread into a PS3-thread!
br
Jofa
PS. M5000 supposedly supports FLAC audio now. That's also missing in your comparison ;-)
Just because I only got PS3 and M5000 to compare. I don't have others to compare. PS3 is very easy to get in HK if you would pay a little bit more.
For pricing, the hardware features that I got from PS3 (USD$490 selling in HK) worth more than the pricing of M5000 (USD$300 selling in HK).
The extra cost (USD$190) from PS3 included the following hardware :
- CD/DVD/Blu-ray Drive
- Wireless LAN
- CF/SD/MS card reader
- 60GB 2.5" hard disk
- Faster CPU
- Gbit LAN
- Bluetooth module
Guy Kuo 12-05-06, 12:18 PM New thread time for PS3.
Gitlemat 12-06-06, 07:09 AM Hi all,
I don't know if you remember but a few days ago I posted a problem regarding stuttered playback when using some kind of XVIDs.
Finally the problem comes when the Xvid is encoded with more than one consecutive B-frames and the 'Pack Bitstream' parameter is set to NO.
In this scenario, every time the playback reaches a B-frame after an I-frame, the player drops a frame producing this stuttered playback.
In order to fix this problem we have to use MPEG4Modifier and 'pack' the bitstream. (It's very fast, one minute per hour of playback) :)
Since this issue can be solved via software and without needing the original source, it means that it can be solved in a future FW, so I guess that this can be included in the wishlist. What do you think?
On the other hand, has anyone checked if the problem with the subtitles that include <i></i> is solved in the last FWs?
Thanks and BR/
Sergio.

Heh, I have a dvd player that has trouble with 'packed' bitsreams....just the opposite of your problem. What is the problem with making a piece of hardware that can read everything?...or why the hell does there have to be so many damn formats?!!

What is the problem with making a piece of hardware that can read everything?...or why the hell does there have to be so many damn formats?!!It should indeed be possible, given the decoding power of todays chip-sets.
That said, the use of packed bit-stream (PBS) should not be necessary at all. But this is the kind of crap you have to put up with if you want to continue placing VfW encoded MPEG-4 ASP streams within the AVI container....
By-the-way DivX only certificate the use of just 1B-VOP with PBS within AVI. And (AFAIK), if you set DivX to generate encodes with "multiple" B-VOP's they don't include PBS at all...

Just curious if Jofa's post has any merit - I am holding out on purchasing the M5000 due to it's inability to play FLAC files natively. I do not want to run server software, and prefer the M5000 to play FLAC and ISO from the Terastation.
So is there any truth to the rumour concerning the M5000 being able to play FLAC?
Thanks in advance
Methinks you forgot some details:
Video
- PS3 only able to support MPEG4 AVC / MPEG4 / MPEG2 / TS up to 1920x1080
The PS3 will NOT playback these files types over the network, specifically h264 playback is only supported on memory stick and ?burned dvd?
- M5000 support DVD ISO / Video_TS / Divx HD / Xvid HD / WMV9 HD
Again, the tvix will playback the IFO either off the internal hard drive OR over the network, while the PS3 will NOT.
For those of us with multi terabyte video storage NAS's these details are critical in making a purchase decision.
If sony added h264 playback over the network I would buy one in a second (if I could find one)
Riot Nrrrd™ 12-06-06, 12:56 PM Do any of you have movies stored as multiple MPEG-2 Transport Stream (.ts) files?
I played a movie (about some guys that used to fight in ancient Rome ;) ) last night that I have as 129 100 MB .ts files.
I made 3 DVD-R discs with 43 files each and put them into the JVC/AVeL player I am testing out at home.
The good news is that it played them all correctly, in order, in 1080i and it looked great. The bad news is that it stopped after each one (each file only plays for about 1 minute and 12 to 20 seconds!!!) and displayed the next filename against a black screen, and then started playing the next file. In other words, it does not seamlessly play the files in order and "pre-load" the next file before the end of the previous one so that it does not have to stop and then start the next file, with these small (but very annoying) gaps in between.
I am very keen to find out how the TViX M-5000U handles playback of these kinds of files in this way as it's very common to find movies and TV programs as multiple .ts files rather than one single large one.

Well now I have tried with a FALC file and it played fine.
I played the files over network via NFS sharing from my Maxtor Shared Storage.
The FLAC info was:
44100 Hz
2 ch stereo
Avg. bitrate: 963 kbps
Now go and buy yourself a Tvix :D

You should get HDTV2Mpeg and recombine the segments to a original single file.
I have asked Dvico to add seamless segment playback months ago to the tvix.
Maybe if more people ask they would raise its priority?

oleg55555 12-07-06, 02:52 PM How does this unit perform with jpg playback (slideshow)? I tried this feature on MediaGate MG-350 and there is a long pause between each picture. The image sizes I used were 3MB. Does anyone have any information on TVIX's performance with large images?
Riot Nrrrd™ 12-08-06, 01:01 AM Thanks oferlaor and qz3fwd for the HDTV2Mpeg/HDTV2Mpeg suggestions for mux'ing the .ts files together. However, I'm a Mac user, so it's not quite so straightforward ;)
One thing I'm curious about; the JVC/AVeL player has apparent problems with DivX 6 HD files that are slightly over 2 GB - I have some BBC HD "Planet Earth" videos in that format (which look spectacular in 720p, btw) and the JVC/AVeL doesn't play them all to the very end - it stops playing them (and goes to the next file) when it gets to within the last minute to minute and a half of them (my two test cases are ~ 2.16 GB and approximately 46-47 minutes long). I'm curious whether this is a case of the JVC/AVeL not being able to read past the 2 GB mark in the files, and whether or not this affects other NMP's such as the TViX M-5000U and, by proxy, the forthcoming M-4000P.
I was watching the 1080p divx Planet Earth files (around 2.7Gb) at the weekend and they looked amazing on my Pioneer plasma.
It did seem to be pushing the Tvix as I FF and RW at high speed and it seemed to be struggling to keep up. (paused a few times).
That being said playing the divx was flawless - 'looked so perfect it seemed like computer graphics rather than real life' to quote one of the watchers. :)

Riot Nrrrd™ 12-08-06, 04:19 AM Thanks for mentioning the 1080p DivX Planet Earth files, tolax :D
(I've got the 720p versions ... didn't know there were 1080p versions, and just found 'em posted to Usenet in alt.binaries.hdtv/alt.binaries.hdtv.repost.)
Hello everybody! First of all sorry for my not so good english but for my excuse, i come from germany :)
I received my Tvix M5000A today and started happily installing the unit. Everything worked quite ok but after noticing that some files are not played at all (the usual xvid files nothing that special about them but the tvix says that the file is invalid) i decided to upgrade the firmware. (in the setup it shows that the firmware version at the moment is 1.6.8)
I downloaded the firmware from the official site, depacked it and put in onto a usb-stick (and onto a usb-harddrive). Everytime i tried to update it said that the update file is not valid and that i should download a valid file from the tvix homepage. I tried versions 1.8.5 and 1.7.3 and everytime the same error-message
Anybody got an idea what might be wrong?
TPeterson 12-08-06, 02:17 PM Did you unzip the download file?
Yep i unzipped it and its shown as a tvix-firmware-file in the browser (it´s got an icon besides it which looks like the tvix)
I tried different versions as i mentioned and even tried pal and ntsc versions.
It always shows the message that the file is invalid
I can´t believe it :) Sometimes the dumbest things happen! As I told you before i used an usb stick to transfer the data and as it seems that f-ing stick corrupted the data. Transfer via USB from laptop and the update worked...
Hi all,
I don't know if i am doing something wrong with this FTP thing.
I get a really poor connection. I am using LeechFTP and i am able to connect but it takes at least a couple of minutes before connection is established. 9 times out of ten it does not connect. The response is "! Socket Error: connection reset by peer".
I am using DHCP and i am getting the ip address fine.
I have used both a Gui based ftp client and the dos one. When using the dos window i get the response, "connection closed by host".
I have had it connected to my modem directly getting an external IP adress and also on my router also getting internal ip addresses. I have used both the latest beta FW and the latest stable fw 1.9.5 A.
Can someone help me understand what i am doing wrong. I have also tried with static ip address but no luck there either. It works the same.
The light is flashing on the lan port on the tvix so i guess everything is working fine.
Please, any information on this would be great.
Cheers,
/T
After recently moving and buying some new equipment I've finally gotten around to reprogramming my Pronto remote. Does anyone know where I can get the IR codes for the TViX? Particularly handy would be discrete on and off codes. Thanks.
lilian69 12-12-06, 03:19 AM Hi dj01,
I learnt all the IR codes from the original remote, and make some delay adjustements for the use of arrow (up and down). All works fine.
But I didn't try to search discrete codes.
If you want, I can send you the pcf file.

It can't download covers but it can display them.
You can assign a file or a folder an image so you can organize them anyway you wish.
Look on page 37 of this thread to see a screen shot.
And yes you can have folder and individual icons. So for example I have an X-Men logo and when you select that you then get cover art for the three movies.
Sadly I have the same thing for Blues Clues, Wiggles, Barbie.......... :)

rocklee 12-16-06, 04:47 AM Hi,
I just bought a new LCD TV monitor to accompany the DIVX player. It is a full HD TV (ie. 1920x1080) with 2 HDMI and VGA. While testing I couldn't get a few things to work :
1. I couldn't select the HDTV menu in Setup even though the TV was connected via DVI (the TV itself didn't have DVI but HDMI so we used a special cable to connect the 2).
2. I can select DVI as output and 1080p, but I didn't see any marked improvement in the movies or menu (in fact the menu looked blocky and the fonts jaggy).
3. I couldn't play the BBC HD video (.TS) file or the IMAX dolphin WMV video while I had on my player specifically to test the HD resolution. Is this a firmware problem?
4. I have a few DVD movies that I copied straight from my DVDs, upon playback they looked soft.
The DIVX player has been pretty good so far but I'm now tempted by the Dueple media/DVD player which accepts DVD discs as well.
Hi,
what exactly do you mean with DIVX player???
This thread discusses the Tvix M5000U player. It plays, among other formats, DivX files.
"The IMAX Dolphin WMV video". I guess there are a few version available. Use a program called GSpot to determine the exact codec used. Then it's easier to see if it should play or not.
I have several WMV HD files that play perfectly. Including one named Dolphins, and a few named BBC in .ts format. But if you mean an original DRM protected version of a WMVHD movie it will not play. You need to remove the DRM first somehow.
The HDTV menu option is for the HDTV tuner add on, which is currently only available in Korea.
J
rocklee 12-16-06, 08:05 AM Thanks Jofa. Sorry I seem to think DIVX = tivx.
There are no error messages when I try to play the dolphin video and I've just upgraded the firmware to 2.0.5. It plays the Microsoft HD videos from their website though (living sea, discovers, T2 etc).
I really want to sample some HD stuff, any help on this would be appreciated.
Well,
not to be picky but it's Tvix. Not tivx.
Anyway, the WMV HD samples from Microsofts site are not DRM protected. If you buy the full movie however it is protected. I recommend googling for how to un-DRM it.
And as I also suggested, download GSpot (again, google...) and post the codec info here and someone can proably answer you better.

1. You mean this M-5000U can output 1080p video via DVI? That is weird, I purchased MB200 over this media player about 6 months ago just because MB200 has 1080p and M-5000U not.
2. As I know this media player will black out for about 2 seconds every time it jumps from one file to the next file. Hence all the files must be joined to one file before feed into it. Same case with MB200.
Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

i was just wondering if it did a PLAY ALL function for an example case, you have a house party with a few of your personal friends, and you wish to play an assortment of MUSIC VIDEOS in alphabetical order by filename. Nobody will be paying attention to the plasma on the wall, but it just adds a nice touch to your get-together. I wanted to be sure the TVIX could do that if I placed a bunch of VOB files or WMV files or whatever in a folder and just hit PLAY ALL.

Hi there,
I have produced my first HD DVD with Ulead VideoStudio 10, but my TViX 5000 doesn't play it.
Does anybody know why? I have seen the folders that were creates are not VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS, but HVDVD_TS and ADV_OBJ. On top, VOB files are now called EVO. If I rename the .EVO files to .VOB files, I can play them, but It can't play menus Menus (the only reason to make it as a DVD!!).
Does anybody know how to fix or get around it?
Does anybody have an alternative (other than wallpaper + thumbnails), to make a menu to play Hi-Def content?
Please, help!

originalsnuffy 12-18-06, 09:18 AM Somebody recently had a posting that said they were swearing off ftp. I think I know why. Every so often a transfer goes really bad. The behavior with the ftp program is that one file that defines the download session can't be deleted.
Finally, I hooked up the tvix to the pc. The entire video folder was not shown in the root structure, though the large files were still showing on the disc space used information screen. After fooling around with various utilities, I rediscovered the virtues of chkdsk. Sure enough chkdsk deleted two pesky files that I could not kill with the ftp program, and restored the video directory.
I conclude that the ftp feature is potentially a problem!
How is the handling of JPEGs with the current Firmware ?

I conclude that the ftp feature is potentially a problem!
I agree, but I'd put it even more strongly. After a few FTP sessions seemingly successful left the HD directory structure corrupted, I recommend against relying up the FTP functions. When the problem happened on mine, the files still looked ok to the TVix, but a file would not delete via FTP. After hooking up via USB, I could see the logical structure of the volume was messed up. Moving one file into the trash would cause all the video files to go into the trash! Normal file operations could not restore the volume to working status. Thankfully, the volume structure could be repaired using Disk Utility (OSX), but never again would I risk FTP.
It is NOT worth risking hours of my work and data to avoid 15 seconds of hooking up a USB cable. Even with all the data backed up, you are still looking at a long transfer time to reload the files on a 500 to 750 GB drive.

I don't think the TVIX will be able to play that kind of structure. It is intended to be written to a disc and then played in a HD DVD player. At the moment, cover thumbnails are your only option.

phuocle 12-21-06, 01:53 PM Has anyone been able test if the Tvix will play an external 100GB or more HDD full of RAW DVDs properly now?
I have had no problems playing full DVD's ripped as .ISO's on a Maxtor 300GB external USB drive. Going to plug up my 500GB external drive next and we'll see. But every DVD played fine from the 300GB external drive. I was able to play them when I had the 1.9.5 firmware on it as well as the new 2.0.5 firmware.
What problems were you seeing?
phuocle 12-21-06, 02:02 PM Hi there,
I have produced my first HD DVD with Ulead VideoStudio 10, but my TViX 5000 doesn't play it.
Inaki
I have Ulead VideoStudio 10 and can make HD DVD, but alas, I do not have an HDV camcorder. If you can find a place to post a short HDV clip, say a few minutes, I'll author an HD DVD and see if I can get it to work in my TViX M5000A and will let you know.

MichaGue 12-21-06, 05:35 PM Hello,
is it possible to make the internal hd of the tvix viewable/writable for external hardware using nfs? I live in germany and have a dbox II, a famous digital reciever, which is able to save tv content over lan on an external disk. The dbox II needs to get connected by nfs on the external drive.
Best regards,
Michael
rocklee 12-21-06, 09:32 PM Ok I have the following problems on my TiVX player :
1. It doesn't play FLAC. Screen goes blank, nothing happens except TiVX will try and play the next song in the directory.
2. When I got my HDTV, videos would play but the same videos won't play via DVI sometimes (I had to switch back to using composite). When I play the video I can see the word "PLAY" on the top right corner of the screen, then it fuzzes out leaving a blank screen. Granted, I'm trying to play the videos from an external drive but this happens sometimes on the local drive.
3. I do see sparkies on the screen (white and black spots). I was given a HDMI-DVI cable. It may or may not be good.
theaxledentaldj 12-22-06, 01:54 AM phuocle: Divco stated in FW 1.9.5: "This version has problem to play files from USB external device, so if you play most files from USB device, we recomend not to use this version.". So, using an external USB HDD to play DVDs with the Tvix has some possible playback issues with freezing. How are your results? Unfortunately I can't test, because my Seagate 750GB is in use on my Mac as HFS+ format. Which is unreadble by the TVix.
MichaGue: no. Only FTP.
rocklee:
1. Are you sure you're running 2.0.5 fw? Could it be the permission settings of the files? Does it play on the PC?
If yes on all I suggest you contact Tvix under the "My Q&A" and see if you can send them a sample file to see why it doen't play.
2. Could you have turned on NTSC/PAL autoswitch and your TV does not support both NTSC and PAL with your choice of output? Mine for instance does not support 720p 50Hz. (Which is weird since it supports most other inputs.....) When the player autoswitches it shortly displays "play", flickers a short while and has then changed output mode.
If this happens with DVD ISOs then that's not your problem. Autoswitch does not work for those.
3. Have you looked at this:

Part of the problem is that they don't tell you exactly what the problem is. From my experience using 1.9.5 and 2.0.5, I did not have a single problem playing .ISO DVD's from an external hard drive. I've now successfully played .ISO DVD's from 3 separate external USB 2.0 drives: 2 different generation Maxtor 300GB drive and 1 500GB drive I put together in an external case.
In all cases they had the .ISO files in the root dir with the icon.tvix file and cover files in JPG format resized to 100x136. No problem at all. I have not tested Divx, TS, or other video file playback from the external drives although I can play them fine from my internal drive.
In all, I have not seen whatever problems Dvico was talking about in the 1.9.5 firmware... we may never find out. What 2.0.5 did for me primarily was that browsing by icon files (using the above mentioned JPG's) works properly now for folders with more than 30 icons. That was a big problem in 1.9.5. Aside from that, 2.0.5 didn't do much else that I could tell... new UI, whoop dee doo. Supposedly improved DVD playback... can't tell either. Could care less about 1080p with DVD playback and my plasma doesn't support it anyways.
But I'm glad the 2.0.5 fixed that icon issue.
"Aside from that, 2.0.5 didn't do much else that I could tell... "
Well, just the small details of Shoutcast and FLAC support then... ;-)

originalsnuffy 12-22-06, 09:09 AM The comment on permissions for files intrigues me. I have tried to update the tvix "in place" using my notebook computer and another external usb drive. The goal was to hook the tvix as an external drive to the notebook, and update it. But I am prevented from writing to the tvix. When I look at file permissions, there are not obvious limits. The notebook is heavily locked down by my it department, but it can open the tvix and look at the files.
Any suggestions of what I should look at?
This is also completely off topic, but a couple of my home pcs seem to resist sharing files on the home network. All the normal settings (same workgroup) and sharing permissions set to all users are set, but still network access is denied. Any pointers of what should be tried. Yes I have already done google searches and microsoft searches, and most everything I've tried has not worked. The last resort seems to be reinstalling windows...but I'd rather not due to the high risk potential of messing up others things. So I am open to suggestions.
Hello,
I'm a new owner of the 5000 and am pretty disapointed about it.
I have the green/white speckles/sparklies issue when using a very good quality short DVI Dual link cable on a Samsung 32 HD LCD, at 720P or 1080i.
At 576P no problem, and at 1080P, nothing (black screen).
Actually the LCD TV is not mine, at home i have a XGA projector that i want to connect to the tivx with a DVI cable (i can get 0% loss certified long cables, price is of course proportional to quality).
Do you think the speckles issue will disappear if i refund my tivx for another one (serie problem?) ?
Do i have a chance not to have the issue with a good cable and my projector?

Your problem sounds like the one discussed here (http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10765).
From what I understand the DIY fix is to shield an internal cable.

What about the permissions of the folders?
Could they be limited to user write only somehow? I guess you are a different user on each PC...

macattackman 12-23-06, 08:44 AM I just updated to the 2.05 release and the flac support is great -- I'm liking this little box more and more every day. It would be nice if there was a small webserver on the unit to select songs via file structure though; the LCD is too small on the front of the unit.

Indeed that was the problem, and now it's fixed!!
Thanks so much!!

rocklee 12-23-06, 07:59 PM I think I solved the sparkie problem.
I moved the media player to another place separated by a wooden board (actually in a shelf under the TV. That seemed to have resolved the white sparkies.
oferlaor 12-24-06, 08:37 AM sounds like that flat cable is too susceptable to noise.
The M-5000 unit is sometimes referred to as M-5000U and sometimes M-5000A. The TVix site shows an M-5000A but in the FAQ they talk about the M-5000U. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
TPeterson 12-25-06, 12:31 PM Read back a ways in this thread and you'll find this discussed. There's effectively no difference between them and the A seems to supersede the U.

I asked Dvico support this question. Their response was:
"There is no difference except M5000U boot when users turn on the backplane swtich, whereas M5000A does not boot."
ashen-shugar 12-25-06, 10:07 PM Hi i'm using the TIVX-5000U and am unable to get the sound from large HD files in TS format (about 4.3 GB). I've been playing these files off a USB portable hdd. The image is superb but there is no sound. The TIVX is using firmware 1.9.5.0 and set up for digital out to my AV receiver. Sound for most other files is working fine and the same TS file outputs superb sound on my PC. Wonder if any of you gurus has a working solution for me. thanks in advance
Would be nice if M5000 could use Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.
Read that you can use the Xbox HD-DVD in Windows XP.
Cheap HD system if so.

Ender925 12-28-06, 03:03 PM Just out of curiosity, does the M-5000 or M-4000 for that matter, have the ability to open rar files and play the content inside?
I know this is a forum for TVix M-5000U, I'm just wondering what is the main reason this model is chosen over MB200 or the new Helios X5000, which can display 1080P? Can somebody tell me in few quick words, why?
I own myself a MB200 for about 6 moths, it is a good Media Player, if only a DVD player included, that will be perfect? :p
Probably because the product is constantly being improved, continuously supported, features added, does what it say and does it well, is reasonably priced, and dvico actually listens to its customers and adds things they ask for. They stand behind their product.
I just wish Santa brought me the add-on ATSC HD tuner.

Have you tried setting the output to analog?
The sound on the .TS file might be WMAPro or something.
I have a few HD-trailers which I need to set audio to analog out in order to get sound. Maybe you do not need to set all audio to analog, just the WMAPro part or is it AAC. Not sure this morning (to little coffee, and still jetlagged from my holiday)

I do not think so...
I have tried a few movies with subtitles (xvid) in a rar-file. No go for me either...
My old streamer could do it, however that streamer did use a PC for transcoding and Vobsub for subtitle (which could decode rar-files).
While we are touching the issue at hand. Have anyone managed to get .sub/.idx files to work with the tvix. I can't say I have been successful in that matter.
Only .srt and those will work. Would be great if it could do .sub though. Might check the Tvix/DVICo page for compability with .sub.

originalsnuffy 12-29-06, 09:22 AM I am curious if anybody has tested dvd files played back on the 5000 compared with the upconverting dvd players like the oppo? I am wondering what differences people see. I have a relatively new sony lcd tv with hdmi, and I am not too excited by the built in sd upconversion on the sony. I have a 4000 on the way for this system; but I am wondering if I should upgrade the dvd player to an oppo or something similar also? I am feeding the current Pioneer unit (this has sacd and dvd audio, but I think only 480i via the component cable) into the tv and am now excited. Another option is using kid's xbox360 which is also hooked up (right now vs. component though I'd be willing to look at vga given comments on another forum). I figure my question belongs here though, since my main comparison point would be the 5000/4000.
Thanks.

I knew it was too good to be true... If this unit had the file extension support of my XBMC then I would put one in every room with a TV. Do you believe it would be feasible to request this feature? Considering players such as VLC have this capability I can't see it being that difficult to implement...

I did.
I have a Panasonic Plasma display TH-50PX600E with a Pioneer DVD player DV-696AV and the TViX 5000, both connected in HDMI (with a DVI2HDMI adapter on the TViX of course).
In order to make the tests I ripped the 3rd episode of Star Wars on the TViX so I could played the same DVD at the same time on both devices. I used the THX tests included on the DVD for optimizing the tuning and played several chapters at the same time also.
I even tested them both in using the component entries of my plasma (not for long actually, HDMI producing a far better quality)
I don't want to describe in detail all tests I did, but to be short here are the results :
- The best image I got overall, is from the TViX 5000 with the 1080i output (I know it sounds strange, I was expecting the 720p to be the best...).
- In second, not far behind, is the Pioneer 696 in 720p
- In third, not really far behind the 2nd, is the TViX again in 720p. The main disadvantage of this mode, apart a sharpness slightly below, is that the image is displayed with a small vertical grey column on the left side of the screen (a bug ?), just like if the image was shifted right by half a centimeter... But anyway, the 1080i being better it's not an issue for me.
Just to be honest, I have really been impressed by the quality of the upscaling of the TViX! I was not thinking it could do a better job than the Pioneer 696 is doing...

Why not simply unrar them yourself? Personally, I see very little need in having a player doing rar, zip and other compression formats. It is so easy to have a scrip unraring the files anyway.
Also, it is not fair to compare VLC, which is a PC based player with lots of CPU with a small dedicated, embedded player. I doubt you would be satisfied with the time it would take to unrar the files...

Because that would involve unrarring about 600GB's of data which is located on my ReadyNAS, also its much easier to verify file corruption via the use of SFV files & grab bits and pieces of something I need when I'm traveling.
I'm basically trying to avoid having to buy another Xbox if the one I have dies. I guess all I can hope for is to make a feature request and see what kind of response I get out of it...

OK, but still, rar and zip does not do much on the size, your 600GB would be easily converted by a script traversing your whole drive? Is file corruption a problem for you? I have about 5-6TB, havent had one file going bad on me.
I'll stop there, I guess we are getting a bit off topic.. ;-)
