Ive had this problem in the passed with different firmwares but v2 exhibits dvd playback starting part way through the movie, only way around seems to be selecting vob1 but that introduces a vob switching pause whilst watching the film... anyone else have this problem?

After being away for a while (moving country) I'm coming to the end of unpacking loads of boxes and have got one of my Tvixs up and running again (still works after being in the hands of evil freight shippers...). I plugged a spare drive I had brought with me (laptops only go so far as entertainment centres...) into the Tvix and all worked well. But this reminded me of something that was promised a while back. Basically the ability to transfer files from a portable drive to the Tvix's internal drive without requiring a PC. ie. you plug the drive into the Tvix and then select an option inside the Tvix GUI and it will transfer the file to the Tvix's drive. Has this been finally done, or do I now have to setup my old wireless Tvix FTP arrangement again (first finding which boxes they are in...)? Really can't be arsed taking the Tvix to a computer or a laptop to the Tvix...

Cheers

Hello,

I am very happy with my TViX M-5000A. It mainly does what it should and Dvico does a great job in support. Only the skin looks to boring for me. I asked Dvico if they would implement something like individual skins. This could be a folder on the internal hd, where the TViX looks for the images of the individual skin.

Answer from Dvico:

Hello Michael,

I regret to say that we do not have plan to support this now. Anyway, thank you for your suggestion.

Regards,
Eric

I played a bit around and there could be much possible.

Url comes later, I need 5 Posts. *g*

Maybe other users are also interested in individual skins and you could asked Dvico to implement it. Perhaps, they will release a firmware with the option of individual skins in future.

Best regards,
Michael

Nice UI!!! Love your Icons...
I can appreciate as I got my 5000A for Christmas and I just finished making Icons for all the folders and files. (long and tedious but worth it! :D)

Anyhow.. I was wondering if some of you 5000 veterans could help me with what Codec's and related profiles to use when converting my Replay Mpeg2 streams and all my other video...
I have around 600GB of video I want to convert for this unit....

I am having trouble finding a good Codec \ settings combo to use that work with the TVIX.
What I am finding when I convert, is Many supported codec's fail when I try to play videos encoded by supported codec's...

XVID - I get no sound followed by the picture locking up.
MPeg2 - None of mine will play... when I download MPeg2 videos... some play ... some don't.
Etc..
Etc...
I'm looking for the codec profile cheat sheet.
There are so many variables to tweak... I need codec profiles that the TVix likes and works well with... I have found SVCD works good.
Allot of other flavor AVI's do not...
By the Way My PC plays everything so I know the files I am compressing are ok. I just need to know the magic settings for this product.

What Codecs work the best with the TVIX?
Have the best quality\best video and save the most space...??
Plus be compatable with my other PVP's (Archos etc...)

Can anyone help? (the TVIX official forums are a ghost town.)
Is there another thread I should be in?

P.S. does anyone know a good place to download HD Mpeg TS files? I do not have a source to create these and I'm dying to see a real HD video come from this unit... (5000A)

I am thinking in purchasing one of these. Can someone outthere answer some questions for me.

Can you find a music track without having the tv on?
How does it record off the tv?
How does you record bought dvd's do you have to have them ripped first?
Whats the dvd jukebox all about?
How good is the quality of music and video?

And most of all would you recommend it?

Thanks in advance.

Is it true, that very soon there will be a NEWER version of TVix HD M-5000U with more advance chip set, which can handle h264 audio codex and 1080p?

If yes, how soon?

That would be the 5101 (if I remember rightly; I have been away for a while). But apparently, according to some hard to find docs on the Tvix site I found a while back, it won't play all H264 encoded video. I take this to mean the hardware doesn't cover everything. It's also supposed to have a little more grunt than the 5000, and at the time (a few months ago) we guessed inbuilt wireless capabilities. Oh, and I think jpeg decoding built into the hardware (ie. will load pictures a lot faster). As for 1080p the current 5000 is supposed to do it with one of the firmware releases, but apparently it isn't stable with everything. Most people got a bit fed up with waiting for the 5101 and got a 5000 (now with option of 4000) instead, mainly because yes they are brilliant, but also because the 5101 looks like the 5000.1. ie. slightly better. And because the 5500 is due out summer 2007 apparently. And that is supposed to have the power and built in codecs to support H264 fully without any worries. Essentially I bought 5000's now (I have 3) with the idea of upgrading the top one (projector) when the 5500 comes out eventually (guessing more like end of 2007 if other Tvix releases are anything to go by).

And I would totally recommend the Tvix M5000U. Very nice bit of kit (my BLT is gathering dust as we speak).

Cheers

Good post. My personal problem is that HD broadcasting here in Germany is generally done in H.264. So without H.264 support a media player is not of much use to me. I just hope the 5101/5500 will be out soon.

There is a small screen on the unit which enables you to browse and select music. A bit cumbersome but it is possible.

No recording from telly as we speak, you need to wait for the annonced ATSC HD tuner.

You have to rip DVD to HD first, and then transport them into the internal HD, or play them from a PC using Netshare application, or use a NAS.

The DVD jukebox must be the possiblity to play .ISO, .IFO or .VOB files residing on a HD. It is very good at playing back ripped DVDs.

I find the quality good for both music and video. Do not have to much to compare with, but I find the quality good as said. I would assume it is not worse than others. Maybe the Helios X5000 is better on music, but not video.

It is any case a cheap unit, and I just love mine. Does what it is supposed to, and does it good.

Good luck with your unit.

Since you have three... Have you found a good conversion tool for internet videos?
I use "total vdeo converter" which works well.
I however cannot seem to find folks who have mastered what is the best codec to use...
XVID looks great at 720x480 with a video bitrate of around 1000+ on my PC .. but the TVIX will not play this.. it has sound issues... I am sure it's just a tweak as some downloaded Xvids I have do play on the TVIX... Do you or anyone have any codec settings reccomendations for me to use? Or do you know of any other information resources I may be able to research from? I am looking for the most optimal codec profiles for encoding to the TVIX.

1) It has a front panel display so you could browse to a track if you want without having the TV on.

2) Currently it doesn't - there is an add on TV tuner coming for the 5000 in early 2007.

3) You do have to rip your DVD's first in-order to play them. I used FabDVD Decrypter to rip mine. One of the nice things about the 5000 is that all the menu features of the DVD's work.

4) DVD jukebox can mean different things to different people. To me it just means I have my 300+ DVD's/TV Shows/Music etc on one hard drive that I can then select at any point what I want to play. One of the unique features of the 5000 is that it supports coverart so you get a 'jukebox' style interface rather than a plain file listing.

5) I have been very impressed with the quality of the picture output on my 50" Pio. Now that it supports FLAC the audio out should be very good as well.

6) Highly recommend that unit. The wife and kids also love the cover art so it is a real family friendly unit. If you don't need the TV recording feature you may want to go with the cheaper 4000 unit.

Hope this helps.

After doing some research, the Tvix 5000 appears to be the best of the current crop (though none are yet HD 'perfect'). Can anyone tell me where I get hold of one of these? Tvix website seems to be 'out'.

Also, what is this Infrant NAS thing I've heard about? I presume some kind of storage solution. Is there anything wrong with just hooking up one or two 500gb USB drives containing all the media?

Thanks

I think these might have them:

http://www.tvixusa.com/default.asp

The Infrant ReadyNas can be found here:
http://infrant.com/

The ReadyNAS is a lovely little box. I have one myself, and can't figure out how I would run my system otherwise ;)
There is nothing wrong connecting one or two 500GB USB HD to the tvix itself, other than more cables etc.
You can even put a HD inside the tvix (e.g. a 500GB). The fan will need to run a bit faster though.
I run video only from my NAS and are very happy with the solution.

Not sure if other NAS'es can be used with the tvix, they probably can. The ReadyNAS at least I know will work, and it works very well.

Good luck in finding a unit, and learn about the NAS.

It appears after reading over 50 pages on this thing and finally deciding what I want, I can't buy one until Jan 30 when they supposedly restock everywhere! I guess I'll have to wait. Perhaps I'll get luck and the 5500 will be out by then ;)

Or do you know of any other information resources I may be able to research from? I am looking for the most optimal codec profiles for encoding to the TVIX.All Xvid and DivX content I have thrown at it works fine. Could be the audio codec cocked it up. Use G-Spot to view the codec information. Post it back here for people to comment, but basically anything exotic is well out. Personally I have used Nero to rip ISOs that work brilliantly off the machine. Basically looks identical to the original DVDs, including menus and even annoying piracy sections that make you sit through it while disabling the menu button. At least it is the same as playing the DVD though. Quality wise it looks perfect to me. Exactly the same as the DVD. I also use Xilisoft software to rip DVDs to DivX (or whatever else) with no worries. Obviously no menus etc, but films look great and it's a lot smaller size than ISO (generally about 700mb rather than 5 or 6gb and I really can't notice a quality difference). Xilisoft also do a video converter (you can get a pack for a few bits of software) that has served me well for converting the odd non-working file to a Tvix compatible state. Essentially choose the standard Xvid or DivX encodings and all is great. I also bought WinAviVideoConverter which was good for converting Real (spit) video to DivX. Also had a mode to use the 2 CPUs in my AMD dual core, so was almost twice as quick as the Xilisoft software (who told me they were working on a future version that does the same thing). Quality wasn't as good though with the odd lip syncing problems.

Oh, and I've used VirtualDub (free) to cut out adverts from DivX files I've created from Xilisoft's DVD ripper (that I burnt to a DVD from my Sky+ satellite box - hassletastic...). Nice bit of software. Just remember to use the Direct Stream Copy option (for BOTH audio and video) as this makes it basically just cut and paste the original Avi. Takes about a minute for a 350mb hour long episode. If you don't use direct stream copy then it re-encodes (either the video or/and the audio) everything again, taking ages (about 45 mins for me) and getting worse quality because you are effectively re-encoding and re-compressing using the DivX codec from an avi that already has been re-encoded and re-compressed using the same DivX codec.

Cheers

After three days of intermittant reading I have read the whole 51 pages of this thread. It is certainly a great insite into the Tvix 5000 and I certainly do want one. I am a bit unsure if I could sort out all the differant file names or the networking side of things. However if I can't buy one now till early Feb anyway. With all the problems early on I am not so sure if I would buy a 5101 or a 5000 but I do want one with a tuner if possable.

will this unit play .pls files (ie. streaming radio from shotcast)

(excuse the following question for it's non-technical-ness!!)
i have just moved into a house that has a media center in the basement. This center basically distributes ethernet to 4 places in the house. For my purposes, i did not attach my router or my modem to the basement media center. I attached it upstairs at one of the 4 connections. My question here is three fold.
1) Should I move my modem to the basement and put the 4 connections to the other parts in the house coming from it?
2) Will this allow me to attach a TVIX to one of the other 3 ethernet connections, specifically the ethernet connection near my plasma?
3) How will the TVIX (on ethernet connection 1) connect to all the files on my computer which is on ethernet connection 2? It is this last part which really is making me lean towards a Dlink-dsm 520 due to it's wireless connection. But if I have a wired connection, i guess that's faster - i just don't know how the tvix connects to my computer, basically...

I hope this makes sense...

bbfastback,
Your questions make sense and also somewhat describe your tech level. The simple answers are:

1. Yes Tvix will connect to and play content from Shoutcast servers.
2 Placement of your Wan connection (assuming DSL or Cable modem) should not make any difference to performance. You can always add another inexpensive router at the end of a cable run to attach more than one device. Think of your LAN like a tree with branches connecting to more branches, all of whom can route information through the trunk.
3. Yes the Tvix can be connected to any of the cables.
4. Tvix provides a very nice (stable) utility that makes it easy for the Tvix to find your computer on the network.
6. If you have any thoughts toward the future and HDTV content (which Tvix handles very nicely) then FORGET ABOUT USING WIRELESS.

Good luck, most of us Tvix users, are quite happy with our toy and cann't wait for the Tuner option to be ready.

For those of us who need a multimedia receiver urgently (and who are in Canada), what's the best bang for our buck. From the research I have done:

b) Dlink DSM-520 - about $350cdn - readily available

It is also interesting that they don't show as much info for DVDs as for other video sources....

Will have to try it out, although most likely won't work with alpha-blending, so won't be as smooth, but with using the same colours as the wallpaper then should be ok.

and it seems i cant send them any questions anymore... what can be wrong?

here is the problem i was trying to send them:

"i have major complaints about the latest firmware for the M-5000U/A.

the userinterface looks like a betaversion.

as soon another aplication or computer accesses a the movie im watching, its freezes totally. this is when im watching a movie with the tvix trough my 100mbit lan from my computer that runs netshare.

since the latest firmware uppdate i have to reboot the tvix very very often.
many times when trying to start or stop a movie, or browse my files, it kicks me back to the tvix internal hard drive though i was browsing the network.

it also reboot when i dont want it to do.

so i guees i have to install a earlier firmware instead, or sell the damn thing and build me a htpc....

and if you try to blame my computer and so on, dont bother, it have the same configuration i had with the earlier firmware, and then it worked much better."

maybe anyone in here can give me some hints about my problem?

I use "DVD decrypter", for ripping the dvd. and then i use the latest "autoGK" to encode it to xvid or divx.

and belive me, i have tryed out a lot of software, and this two programs are very easy and give quite good results.

autoGK also have a built in tutorial.

If you allready have the movies as iso on your harddrive, just mount the iso with daemon tools, and then use autogk directly.

be sure to chose the right ifo file as source.

press ctrl/F9 in autogk to get advanced settings.

Sometimes when the FTP session is idle for a very long time i "dies". Can't remember from the top of my head if I usually need to reboot the Tvix or just disconnect and start new FTP. I'm starting to learn not to let it hang idle.

If you can't even manage those quantities I'm guessing something non-Tvix. Network? FTP-application? I use Total Commander.

Is there a maximum volume/shared capacity the TViX box can access via NFS?

I'm thinking of purchasing a 5 disk NAS box and populating it with five 750GB drives, giving me a single 3TB volume via Raid5. Will the TViX be able to access this share?

EDIT:
Uhm, just had a though. Would the filesytem on the NAS box be NTFS? If so, isn't that restricted to about 2TB?

I just got a movie from a friend of mine that made the ISO using ROXIO and it does not play. It starts and then stops, well it does not start playing the screen just goes blank and then back the movie list. Then from that point on any movies I try to play does the same thing. I have to restart the device and then I am able to play the other movies but as soon as I try that movie ISO made using ROXIO it does the same thing, so I know it has something to do with how the movie ISO was created. What I have to do is mount the ISO and then use shrink 3.2 to re-ISO it and then that works fine. Any one else come see this before?

1. Anyone still experiences dropouts when using FTP to tranfser files to the tvix.
2. Is there a message posted about this?

Im writing because it hangs or dropout every time i try to tranfser, both single and multiple files and i have to re-connect to continue tranfering remaning files.

I have the same problem and I usually have to reboot the device or wait about 10min before it will work again. I do not use the FTP feature for movies any more, only for small files.

Hi - I just got my tvix M4000 yesterday and it's mostly working. I have a couple of NFS shares mounted and my .tp and dvix files play back flawlessly over my network.

I have about 80 movies ripped with dvd shrink as IFO/VOB's which play back perfectly from my Roku, but when i select the IFO from the tvix, it seems to just hang. It responds to the remote, so i can press stop to get back to the file list, but doesn't appear to be doing anything. How long does it take to start playing back a dvd rip from an IFO?

If I select a vob from the dvd rip, it plays back fine. Most of my rips contain no menus or extras, just the main movie. All of the vobs are < 1 GB in size.

Thanks for any assistance. I know this is an M5000 thread, but since it's using the same firmware, i figured this would be an ok place to start (running 2.05 firmware).

Thanks,
Jeff

I do wonder if there is a way to rationalize the threads for the 5000 and 4000? Some things are definitely going to be the same...software configurations...firmware tweaks...network share issues...codec support.

Some things might vary--sparklies on the 5000 don't happen at 1080p on the 4000....some people are reporting networking speed issues on the 4000. Of course you can't have the recording add on for the 4000 (but then again almost nobody has this add on..yet).

So it seems we should have three threads...4000/5000 networking, firmware, software, etc.

Then 5000 specific hardware issues and 4000 specific hardware issues.

By the way, I have not tried the networking yet, but as a player if anything I like the 4000 even more than the 5000. The 4000 comes with firmware 1.98; I don't like the new interface as much as 1.95 and before. So far I have not gone to 2.05 or back to 1.95 on the new unit. On my 5000 I dropped back to 1.95 from 2.05...I liked the reliability more and the interface much more.

OK - since i've been having so much trouble with my IFO/VOB rips of my DVD's, i've decided to turn them back into ISO's using DVD shrink.

Great, my first ISO worked fine. OOps, now it doesn't. Hmm. Now no ISO files play back. Hmmm. Reboot.

Now, the Tvix plays these back just fine, except they never start at the beginning! They start about 8 minutes into the file. I have to pause, choose goto, enter 00:00 and play...

Very annoying.

FYI - my roku plays these files rock solid. If only the roku could play dvix files... even with its weak support and beta firmware it behaves better than the tvix box. So far, i'm not all that impressed.

Oh yeah, the tvix is also having trouble playing back some of my MP3 files. It seems like it is choking on the VBR files and playing my CBR files. Then I can go back into a VBR and it plays fine... very strange.

I thought this thing was supposed to be rock solid? Able to playback whatever you throw at it? Hmmm... Guess the firmware has a ways to go.

Do any of these things have a web interface and the ability to play mp3's with no pauses in between songs?

I want to be able to play music through it without having to use a remote.

Heck, find a Rio Karma digital audio player. They're out of production now, but they have a nice little charger base with ethernet and RCA jacks on the back. There's some kind of java web interface to the device, but I don't recall those details. It has pretty broad format support... and beautiful gapless playback. It's a real shame that Rio went under, because they were making unique players.

OK, I have another question before I make my decision.

Besides the future HDTV tuner option, it seems that the main functional difference between the TViX 4000 & 5000 is the remote. From pictures, they look quite different. The 4000 remote looks like it has an extra section of buttons at the top that aren't on the 5000 remote. Can someone that has both please provide some insight into the differences.

What are the extra buttons on the 4000? Are there certain tasks that the 4000 has a button for, but the 5000 has to navigate through menus? Does either have lighted buttons? Which do you prefer?

I appreciate any feedback because this may end up being my deciding factor. Thanks.

Wouldn't it be Great if the Tvix could query the IMDB database by adding a simple file in the format ttXXXXXXX.imdb to the folder where you keep the movie-file(s) that correspond with that number? (ttXXXXXXX = IMDB record number of course) That way, you could have the TvIX not only display Icons and thumbnails, but also movie-info...

DHCP isn't really a technical problem, but if you want to be able to set up streaming from the PC, or use ftp from your PC to your TVIX, fixed IP addresses for each are helpful. Many routers serving as DHCP servers have features for granting fixed leases for specific MAC addresses, allowing you to fix the addresses for these devices without setting up static addresses.

Not sure exactly what you mean about folders, but the main constraint when using TVIX to stream over Samba (SMB/Windows file sharing) is that the Windows machine needs to have a share named tvixhd1. Once you open the share, files can be stored anywhere in the folder structure. The limitation is on the name of the share, not any navigation once you are in the share.

You can also share over higher performing NFS, and that doesn't seem to have the naming restriction.

I have a question about NFS. According to TViX and most all users, NFS is recommended because there are performance issues on streaming HD content over Samba shares. TViX provides the win32 NetShare program which I assume is their free NFS server implementation. Do other NFS servers work just as well... i.e. NAS appliance or NFS share from some unix server?

Yes, I use an ordinary "exportfs" to export files via NFS from my Maxtor Shared Storage, and it works well. The MSS runs a small Linux distribution.

@gnat: Thanks for the response. I have not messed much with network stuff...so I am a bit leary of messing with it but from your description it does not sound too hard.

At the moment my video files are scattered over 3-4 drives...two are internal to my PC and two are USB'd to my main PC. With the LP2 I use WIZD as the server software. With that all I do is map to each drive in the WIZD ini file and I am done.
I am not sure where Samba comes into the picture.

I am keanly interested in this issue because I am trying to decide between the MB100, the MG-350HD and the TVIX 5000...the 5000 seems like the way to go but I have read a number of posts regarding how hard it can be to get the TVIX working over a network.

BTW what is 'higher performing NFS'? I googled NFS and duh that is Network File System...so how you increase the performance...googling that did not yield anything I could use.

digitalkid2 - there are 2 primary technologies for exporting and sharing filesystems. NFS has been around for many years, I believe developed by Sun Microsystems, and has primarily been for UNIX based systems. The other is the popular "windows share" which is technically SMB or CIFS protocol... sometimes called Samaba in reference to the open source software that allows you to freely connect to a windows share from a unix platform.

The reference to higher performance is the fact that NFS is a much faster, more efficient, and more robust file sharing technology.

I assume the TViX NetShare software is their version of a NFS server to provide that increased performance from a windows machine. The low-end NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices are starting to offer NFS shares as well. See the Infrant ReadyNAS for a powerful, full-featured NAS option.

Boy, you make SMB sound busted. It may well be that SMB has some additional overhead, or it could be something to do with limitations on the SMB stack for the teeny TVIX processor. The TVIX folks are the ones that describe SMB as lower performing, and we figure they have to know their product.

I didn't like something I read about one of the alternatives to the TVIX devices, the Mvix 760-HD. They mentioned that you had to enable IPX/SPX (the Netware native protocol) on your Windows PC for streaming. In other words, it sounds like the MVIX doesn't support TCP/IP networking (at least in the docs). This just strikes me as weird that they are depending on an essentially dead networking protocol. Not even Netware uses it for much anymore. I've heard that IPX/SPX is perhaps a bit faster on small packet sizes than TCP, but I've also heard it generates a lot of chatter on the network.

TPeterson

SMB is getting a bad rap from the Sigma Designs player folks. There are bugs in the SD firmware that screw up SMB performance. Zensonic has routed out the bugs and the Z500 with at least 1.5beta4 firmware now plays HDTV files over SMB shares just fine.

I look forward to DViCo's making the same fixes eventually.

Chad-R
01-22-07, 03:26 PM
OK, maybe I should have said.... NFS reportedly provides better performance for the TViX devices than SMB/CIFS/Samba does. I just assumed that SMB was developed by Microsoft and it had a lot of extra overhead to support their windows networking world. We certainly don't need/want to start any of those microsoft vs Anti-microsoft "religious type" of arguments here:)

I do hope it is TViX's implementation of Samba that is the problem vs the underlying protocol/stack design. It would be ideal for everyone if it worked as well as NFS for the TViX devices.

I've almost decided to purchase the Infrant ReadyNas NV+. The biggest issues I've seen are: 1.) you can't direct attach it, which means at least 3x slower speed loading the files to it vs if you were able to also attach it via usb/firewire/eSata. And, 2.) you can not write to an external USB drive with NTFS. I'm not sure if that is the case for other NAS devices.

Of course for the $600 (w/o disks), I could probably build a decent linux RAID server that I could use for other things.

decisions, decisions:)

TPeterson
01-22-07, 03:39 PM
And I didn't mean to suggest that NFS isn't better than SMB, just that SMB actually works well enough to play HDTV TS files on the SD-based boxes if their firmware is done correctly.

FWIW, I've done a bit of digging and here's what I found:

5101 seems to be using Sigma Designs EM8622.
5500 seems to be using Sigma Designs EM8634.

EM8622 supports H.264 HP@L4.0 and VC-1.
EM8634 supports H.264 HP@L4.1 and VC-1.

http://www.ateme.com/BB_HD_4Chip.php

HP@L4.0 supports up to 25 Mbps and is optimized for broadcasting
HP@L4.1 supports up to 62 Mbps and is used by HD DVD / Blu-Ray

So basically my impression is that the 5101 will do VC-1 just fine for everything (which should include HD DVD and Blu-Ray VC-1 rips). But the H.264 support of the 5101 will be limited to typical broadcast bit-rates. So the 5101 will not have the grunt to play HD DVD and Blu-Ray H.264 rips.

If true that's good news for me, because what I need most is H.264 support for all the (broadcasted) movies I've recorded. And it seems that the 5101 should do that just fine. Also it should have enough power to play ripped VC-1 HD DVDs, too, as far as I understand it.

So, is there any news about 5101 release dates?

Also, will there be a 4101 variation (I think I prefer the 4000 form factor over the 5000).

You need to put a blank text file called icon.tvix in the folder you want icons. Then put either a jpg or png with the same name as a film in the folder. eg. If you have starwars.avi then put starwars.jpg or starwars.png in there too. Then it will use the jpg or png as the icon for starwars.avi. It can handle large files, but it doesn't show more than something like 100x136 on the screen, so for speed resize to the set size (or keep smaller I guess). Search this site (or look at the Tvix sticky at the top, I think it's in there), for exact icon sizes. There is also a colour you use in the png file (not JPG! and size *must* be 100x136 for transparency) that will be transparent (look around here for exact colour - actually website says is 0xC8C8C8). If you want to change the icon for the up folder then you use upfolder.jpg or upfolder.png I think. Think it's also folder.jpg or folder.png inside a folder for the parent folder to show that icon instead of the standard folder too.

It's been a while since I did this (am developing something - slowly - to automate a lot of it) but I think thats correct. One or more of the threads here definitely has exact instructions (or look at Tvix website which should give details in FW release documents).

And to delete a file or directory then use that square cut/ copy button (can't remember exact name, but is sqare to the right and above off button) at the bottom of the remote. It then asks to delete. Say yes and it goes away. I don't think it works if you have items inside a directory inside another directory, and you try to remove from outside all directories. ie. only deletes a directory if it's empty or hasn't got a directory inside it with items inside that. If you see what I mean. Actually I just checked and it's the square capture delete button with a picture of a camera on it. Something I also found is the grey function button on the right is a turn off timer (in 30 mins turn off Tvix).

Failing that then I will get a directory structure later from one of my Tvixs and post it here.

Cheers

Sounds good. Lets hope they have made is as stable as 1.9.5 was.
2.0.5(?) was less stable in my opinion, and I had to reboot quite a few more times.
On the positive side (there are many) it seems that a few non-playable files on 1.9.5 now plays on 2.0.5. Just saw it the other day.

I also got my hands on a 1080p file the other day. A WMV-HD (wmv9 with WMAPro sound). It did play (although only in stereo soundwise), but my tools so far can't say if it was 1080i or 1080p (avicodec and Gspot). So I can't say for sure... Any tools that can "decode" WMV codec and tell "i or p"?
The only thing I saw was the buttons on the screen became garbled. Output was either 720p or 1080i. No biggie...

Beta 2.0.8:

I've loaded this on both a 4000 and 5000, my initial findings are:

1) Menu key is working again

2) ISO playback seems to be far more stable (no reboots needed yet)

3) WiFi adaptor support (not tested yet)

4) ability to restart the local FTP service (I assume for all those who found it crashes)

5) faster timeout for non-existent NFS shares.

Overall it seems more stable for me, however I only use ISO files (DVD rips).

I was thinking about the TV Tuner today that is allegedly going to be launched in the US some time soon.

I currently have Comcast Cable with the HD package & DVR.

My assumption is that I would be able to record the 'main' HD channels (NBC, ABC etc) via the cable box because these are broadcast 'in the clear'. I also assume that I would not be able to record HD ESPN/Discovery etc because they have the 5C flag set?

My confusion though is about SD channels such as SCI-FI, Disney etc. Will I be able to record these? I already have a DVR but for things like Doctor Who and some of the kids stuff it would be nice to have them saved on the TVIX instead.

Also any thoughts as to what format it is likely to save the SD/HD in? My 750 internal is almost full so it would be great if I could save to an external USB connected drive.

Anyone have more concrete information on this?

I only see a korean version of 2.0.8... am i missing something?

thx

TIA

I haven't read anything about QAM or Cablecard support, so I would think that there might be some barriers to unscrambling cable into these devices. My assumption would be that they would record Over-The-Air broadcasts through the ATSC tuner. Maybe I'm wrong here, but this has all been a big issue in the Home Theater PC area, and that's why the announcement of ATI's Cablecard equipment is a big deal.

So far, all fw versions have had support for english and PAL and NTSC regardless of whether they have been called kor, pal or eng.

I would say you are 99% sure it will give you english....

As far as I know it is only an ATSC tuner and doesnt have QAM support, although they just might suprise us since thier other Dvico tuners seem to commonly support both ATSC & QAM and they probably have reused the hardware? Supposedly the tuner will be coming in Feb???

Sign me up for 2 tuners.

Why am I bothering spending time in here?

Crivens.... Sory I need more help. I tried to do this yesterday and this is what happens:
The Icon.Tvix works if I put a .jpg file with the same name as the ISO file GREAT !
no luck on .png files though. Do you need to make .png files yourself (if so how do you do that?) or can you just change the extension from .jpg to .png? I tried the latter but to no avail. I'm not skilled in these matters unfortunately.
The other thing you mentioned one can do (make an icon of a folder) doesn't work at all.
I would very much like to do the following :
In my AUDIO file I have 800 mp3 songs. They folders are sorted AUDIO - AC/DC, BACK IN BLACK , FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK , HIGHWAY TO HELL , ETC. I would like to se the CD covers as icons when I click on the AC/DC folder (in .png if poss) and then click the icon in
order to see the mp3 songs that are contained within the album.

How on earth do I do that ?
And how do I change the "UP FOLDER" Icon ? (I'm afraid I am stuck in limbo...) :-(

I am desperate
I am Swedish
I am a newbie with a Tvix M-5000A :-)

Hi,

.png is another graphics format than .jpg so you can not just change the extension. You have to use a graphics program that is capable of converting the image to PNG. You'll probably use the same program to edit your pictures so that the correct transperency color is used as you want it.
I haven't bothered with this yet but I suggest googling "convert jpg to png".
http://www.google.se/search?hl=sv&q=convert+jpg+to+png&meta=

For folders to appear as icons you put the file "folder.jpg" (or .png) in the folder you want to appear as a nice icon.
Ie. a file structure like this
Audio/
Audio/ACDC/
Audio/KISS
Audio/icon.tvix
Audio/ACDC/folder.jpg
Audio/KISS/folder.jpg

where each folder.jpg is a different picture. So you would need to rename each "my-nice-kiss-icon.jpg" and "my-nice-acdc-icon.jpg" to folder.jpg in their target folder.

It is a rather time consuming task to utilize this feature to its best.

Jofa. Almost a "Total" success  I downloaded a converter program and
convertet 840 .bmp files to .png files 136 x 100 and have started the tenious
job in implementing thim all into my music folders. I used a feature called "automatic transparancy" in the program and most of them look nice. Some
however looks crap due to transparancy not looking good when the cd cover is
white to start with. they are not that many though so I will make .jpg pics of them
instead. Annyway I just wanted to say thank you for your (and everybody else's)
help. My Tvix now has a cool backgroung and my music folders are getting better
by the day.
I am using this http://www.reasoft.com/rea-bmp-change.shtml
program. Very easy to understand and since I went ahead and bought it (the
light version is enough) I can now easily rip a .jpg pic from amazon or imdb and
convert it to transparent .png files. It a heckuva job to put all pics in the folders
though but it is worth it. Remember to put the icon.tvix in the group folder ONLY
though and then put your cd cover (ie png file) inside each album and rename it
"folder.png" That did it for me :D   :)

New FW:

The restart FTP tool is kind of useless if you're in another room trying to transfer files, cant they just fix FTP already!?!

Systems hangs more now then before. Also when a transfer in progress by FTP gets abrupted then theres no way to delete the file eg. folder. If you try within the tvix system it hangs, if you try to overwrite everything hangs both FTP software and Tvix.
If you try to delete from FTP everything hangs.

Slightly faster menu.

So basically hothing new for me there... :/

If they can fix the FTP thing and maybe help out with corrupted files then it might be alright, oh and also the ability to change subtitle positions in the main menu.

PS. I also got a DivX movie to hang the system never happend before tvix usually plays everything but this it wont, dunno if its the new FW or not but no fun :/

I know how you can make playlists though. I said "Winamp" because that's the program i use to playback mp3 music on my computer.
To create a playlist, you only need to connect your TViX to your computer with an USB cable. Then you startup Winamp... you can then use internet explorer to browse through your TViX's store of musicfiles and drag each file you want in your playlist from the explorer-window to the winamp playlist window.... that's the way I do it anyway. You can also add files to the playlist through the winamp interface itself, but that is more cumbersome in my opinion. After you finish, and the playlist is populated, you save the playlist enywhere on your TViX. I created a directory called "playlists" for that, but you can store it anywhere you like. You can also name it whatever you like.
There are of course other playlist generators out there. Google for them. But winamp is free and easy.

Good luck!

Well you don't need more then one NFS share.
It's much eisier to just mount all the different HD/DVD-rom's in subfolders to the one you are sharing with tvix netshare.

First create a folder DVD-rom i the normal share folder.
Then you go to ComputerManagement/Disk management and on the DVD-rom just right click and choose "change driveletter and paths"

Yes, you can have playlists that cross directories, and you shuffle within them. For my setup, I created playlists that use an absolute path to get to each file (in my case, video files). I'm at work and don't remember the exact syntax, but for example it was a file called "animated comedy.m3u" with rows something like this:
\video\Television\South Park\Season 1\Ep1.avi
\video\Television\South Park\Season 2\Ep6.avi
\video\Television\Futurama\Season 1\Ep 4.avi
\video\Television\Venture Brothers\Season 2\Ep5.avi
etc.

I'm not using a drive in the TVix - all of my files are on a network share - I'm not sure if the syntax would have to change with local storage. And the directory path would obviously depend on how\where you're storing your data. Queue up the playlist and enable shuffle, and I have a virtual TV channel where I don't know which show/episode is playing next.

If you want to see a copy of my playlist file for comparison purposes, PM me.

The_Maestro

Cool thanks. I've looked at some stuff on m3u files and they don't look that difficult to create, I should be able to figure out what path to use. I'll give it a shot.

I blame it on the FTP server thingy and hope this issue will be sorted in 2.0.9 or
somethingratheroranother :-)
I stick to watching AVI files through the "netshare" it works perfectly. Maybee the
files are too big. Ive read somewhere that if they're over 4 GB the problems start
occuring....

sorry, let me rephrase that... anyone able to view their DVD's from the PC's DVD drive.

My rips all work fine over NFS. I'm just looking for a way to put a commercial dvd into my computer's DVD drive and have it play on my tvix. I got it working with AnyDVD and SMB sharing of the drive, but it was unwatchable.

I'm going to try mounting my DVD to a folder under an NFS share and see how that works... I'll let you know how it goes.

hmmmm Upgraded to 2.0.8 this weekend. Yesterday when I hooked up the USB cable to transfer some files the Video folder was missing. Well technically there was a file called Video (5K) but it was not recognized as a folder.

Thankfully the 750Gb internal segate was still reporting 600Gb full so a quick chckdsk bought it back again.

I've heard of this scenario before when using FTP but never a USB cable.

Could of course just be a quirk (always happy to blame windows XP for this kind of thing) but interesting never the less.

Anyone have information on what causes a file/directory listing to become corrupted? Any tools to back up a disk structure (without all the files)

I've watched commercial dvd's using this method with AnyDVD. But the results were inconsistent. Sometimes it was slow and choppy and another day the same DVD worked fine. So it's very strange. Don't know why this happens.

Hello,

omg while browsing tvix ftp site I've found the new 2.0.9A firmware on the official release directory...I've downloaded it yesterday and patched my Tvix today...So I was about to post the link here BUT the 2.0.9 directory is not there anymore...So...If someone knows why, feel free to tell me...And also, if someone knows the changes on the official 2.0.9A it would be cool!

If you want the firmware, I can share it but I presume that they have a good reason to delete it...By now eveything is okay for my Tvix but I haven't tried a lot of things...

Best regards,
Bruno.

Hi Joosex, Is this why my futile attempts to stream ISO from my PC to my TVix
fails and I get choppy pic and the likes? Shall I "install NFS" like this thread

http://www.pixelmagicforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1784

suggests ?

I haven't installed any NFS on my PC. My question is (running XP Home) am I
using SMB automatically then ?

Nik--

Yes, you're using "SMB", which is another name for Windows native file sharing. For the record, though, it isn't SMB that "sucks", but rather the Sigma Designs implementation of it.

Well that really doesn't help me now does it (LoL) :-)
I think I have to try to download and install NFS then (not my field of expertise but I'll give
it a go). But first I realize that my Router Sucks even more. It's an old 54mbps Netgear
thingy and I'm starting tonight with a visit down the old Computer store and getting myself
a D-Link DWA 547 rangebooster PCI card and a 108 mbps DGL-4300 Router. Come to think
of it, that must be whats causing all the commotion in the network (a crappy router)

Whaddya think TPeterson ? Am I right in trying this before installing NFS on my PC ?
(Thanks for your answer by the way :-)

If you're planning the hw upgrade anyway, then you could just as well wait to find out what performance of the current configuration is like before installing the NFS server. However, the DViCo NFS server installation is trivial, so if you might just skip the hw expense provided NFS works for you, then I would try that first.

One moment TPeterson,
However, the DViCo NFS server...
Is the NFS server a DViCo product that's supposed to be installed when you run your TViX?
There was no mentioning about that in my manual.
I have managed to "talk" to my PC from my TV room and I can also (through FTP)
"find" the Tvix from my PC and drag & drop files into the tvix. Is there something else
you can do once you install their NFS server or is the effect that it goes faster and smoother
to stream from PC to Tvix ?

Im sorry if this doesn't make sense but my life is far away from 00011100110 :-)

The DViCo NFS server (or other versions that have been mentioned in the TViX threads here) is a Windows "service" that's intended to run all the time that your PC runs and it provides an alternative method for the TViX to "find" (share) files on your PC. Yes, it does run faster than the built-in Windows SMB sharing. The sw and its manual are both on the DViCo website (http://www.tvix.co.kr/Eng/support/M5000Firmware.aspx), where they call it "Netshare".

That's not really fast enough. It might work for DVD with a 108Mbit network but it will never work for HDTV.

Hi Joosex (and TPeterson & Co)
Yes unfortunately I was using a 54 Mbps wireless connection. That was far to slow.
Did by a D-Link 4300 108 mbps yesterday and I think that was my problem. However (and this is the sad part :-( I now cannot find my PC from the Tvix. The FTP works alot better
now but I have probs with what IP number to input to the TViX. I have tried the
default from the router (ie 192,168,0,1) and I have tried my PC's ip number but "she"
(the TViX) either says "Cannot connect to server" or just "hangs" with a "WAIT" message
as she is searching for my PC. I have forgotten how I connected my other router. Can
sombody please help me there ? Can it have something to do with the router setup "Bloccking" me from seeing the PC or Am I just plain Swedish (hehe) I have it on DHCP. I have tried both SAMBA and NFS they both say the same thing. I am sure I had it
working only yesterday...

When you setup the new router, did you choose the same subnet as before (i.e. if you were 192.168.0.x are you still 192.168.0.x?) Every router will default to whatever the manufacturer wants. I believe linksys routers default to 192.168.1.xxx others do 192.168.0.xxx.

If you tvix is setup for DHCP, you should reboot it and see if it picks up a new address from the router's DHCP server (did you enable the router's dhcp server?) Also, you should reboot your comptuters if they are using DHCP as well - the ip addresses of all your equipment could be completely different now - you'll have to enter the new IP's in the tvix interface.

Personally, I setup my network with static addresses for my servers and dynamic for my clients. I then tell my DHCP server in my router what range to use (it's configurable on the router).

Hi Jeff,
I'll try to be a bit more coherent (but I'm a misserable technician :-)

The DNS adress has changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1 so I take it thats the "new"
Default.
My Tvix is set up for DHCP and reebooted (many times)
My PC is reebooted and is showing a new IP adress 192.168.xxx.xxx (it's changed with
the new Router)
Is it the 192.168.xxx.xxx IP that should be input into Tvix or is it the Router adress (ie. 192.168.0.1)
that is really my question ?
And again I am sorry for the Bombing of this forum :-(

Every device on your network needs an IP address. For simplicity, let's just say you have 3 devices: computer, tvix and router.

router is now: 192.168.0.1
computer is now: ??? <--- you need to figure this out. Go to a command prompt and type: ipconfig and it will show you what it's using.
tvix is now: ??? <--- assuming you rebooted a bunch of times, it should now be something like 192.168.0.100

Let's fill in the blanks before going any further. Figure out what your computer and tvix are using for ip addresses. The computer is easy, that's what the ipconfig command will show you. Not sure where the tvix shows you what it picked up from the dhcp server, but you can log into your router's interface, find the dhcp server and there should be a place where it shows you the clients that are connected - your tvix should be in there.

Post back when you have this info or need more help finding these numbers.

Hello everybody,

can anybody explain (step-by-step) how to install a Wireless USB stick to the TVIX ??
I am using the Linksys USB adapter together with a linksys router and my TVIX but with no success !

This is what I did:

1) I looked up the MAC address of the USB wireless stick.
I made this MAC address into a valid MAC address for the router to connect to.

2) I took the Linksys installation CD on my laptop and started the setup program.
During the installation I had to plug in the USB wireless stick into my laptop.
I entered the used security protocal (WEP 128bit in my case) and typed in the WEP-key.
In this way my laptop was able to connect wireless to the internet.....so far: OK

3) Then I plugged the Wireless USB stick into my TVIX.
I made Wifi my standard network in the setup menu. And selected DHCP for wireless.
Then I went searching for wireless networks. I found 3 of them and selected the wireless network with my own SSID.
Then I had to type in the network key. This is (I suppose) the password I have to enter when I enter my routers setting webpage with my browser on 192.168.100.254 ??

After I typed in this network key of 8 characters, my TVIX starts thinking and searching.
But after that I get a screen on which only the SSID and the MAC adres of the USB stick is displayed.
So it get a blank for the IP address and a blank for the subnet and DNS server !
So the router does not give an IP address away to my USB stick adapted to the TVIX......

So what can be the problem??
* Do I have to make the MAC address of yhe TVIX itself also available on the router to connect with ?
* Or do I have to specify a username too together with the network key ?? \
Because when I enter my routers settings (web)page I enter NO username and the 8 character Network Key.
But how to specify that my TVIX uses no user name too ??

So, a lot of questions !
Anyone know how to solve this ??

Thank you & Bye for now,

Installed TViX Netshare on my PC
Got the FTP to work fine

Is Windows Firewall enabled? Any other firewall software (Kaspersky, Norton, whatever)? Try to disable the firewall for a while and see if you have better luck. Most of the firewalls put in a rule to allow FTP, but probably not NFS.

Hello,

I've just bought the Linksys wifi usb key to try out the new feature of the M-5000.
So I will tell you here what I did...Everything works great for me.
- Logged into my netgear 834G router to declare the mac adress of the wifi usb key in the wireless restriction list.
- In he dhcp settings of the router, I have attributed an IP to the Mac adress of the tvix so I am sure that it will always be reached at this IP. In my case it is 192.168.1.6
- Plugged the key on the tvix and power up the m-5000.
- In the network settings of the tvix, in the wifi ip configuration I've put "Static IP" since dhcp don't work for me.
- In the TVIX IP field in the window that opened when you submit the "Static IP" choice, I put the same IP I have attributed to my tvix in the router (192.168.001.006).
- In the mask field I put: 255.255.255.000
- In Dns server field I put the IP adress of the router (the one you type to reach the configuration page of the router). In my case 192.168.001.001 (192.168.1.1)
- Then I use the search wifi network feature of the tvix to find the wifi network of my router.
- That's it...I then use filezilla to make some work on the tvix using ftp.

My wifi network is not crypted with WEP etc, etc...

In your case, you don't have to install the drivers of the wifi key on your laptop since the wifi key is plugged on the tvix. The network key you have to type is surely the key of your wifi network that you will find on the wifi page of your router. You might have a crypted wifi...

Bruno.

Hi Bruno,

the reason why I first installed the USB & drivers on my laptop, was to make sure the USB stick could communicate with my network using WEP 128bit encryption.
Otherwise, while the stick was connected to the TVIX, I saw no possibility to select the way of encryption and to enter the WEP key. That's the reason why!

I will try again tonight using a static IP. I haven't tried this yet.
Maybe it works for me to

Thnx,

Hi,
First I'd like to point you to http://openmss.org a site concerning the Maxtor Shared Storage and more recently also the Maxtor Shared Storage II

I beleive you need to add a share in the MSS II with the correct user and password. Can't recall exactly what they are (tvixuser?) from the top of my head, but check out all of this thread and the Tvix FAQ and the info is in there.

If you want to use NFS on the MSSII you'll probably have to dig in to the openmss forum.

Hi Misko
No firewalls.
There is a firewall inside the router but I hope you don't mean that one (do you?)
I was playing around with the setups in the Router over the weekend
and managed to connect the PC to the Twix over network for a while  (big success :-) My problem is now that if I play a song (or movie file) on the tvix that comes from my pc. It only plays 1-2 minutes and then either skips to the next song or movie or disconnects totally (ie Tvix turs itself off). Whenever I get out of the "network mode" and try to reconnect, I get "Connot connect to disc" again !!
Can this be a problem with the router and not the Tvix. If so I will pester the people at D-Link for a while. :D (good for you hehe)

The Tvix Netshare works fine (ie I can "find" my Tvix from my PC and copy stuff to it that way)

Any help is deeply appriceated :p

Ehhh funny you should mention that. I just got hold of support at D-link and
yes there is a new fw out for my router. Will check that tonight and revert. Thanks for answering. Could be that.

Another strange Question from moi :

I have tried to reset to factory setup but it doesnt work. In my head a factory reset should install original fz into tvix. I have the same fw everytime I try. The changes that occurs is my resolution drops back to before, screensaver is deactiveted and a buch of small stuff like that. All me IP adress setup remains
and me fw is still 2.0.9 and not 1.9.5 that was there from start. Don't get me
wrong. I can live with that if that's what it means by "Factory Reset" but shouldn't tvix totally erase what I have input exept the Music and Films ? Just a stupid Q

Restoring factory defaults on the typical device, TVIX, router, or whatever, clears out a set of customized settings stored in NVRAM restoring them to defaults without touching the firmware. Many devices have a backup plan for downgrading firmware-- you'll find that the TVIX docs list one allowing you to put the firmware in a specially named subfolder and it will automatically load without intervention. Your plan of taking a problematic device and restoring it to a superceded firmware revision sounds to me like a recipe for a doorstop.

I am also having a NFS connection problem with 195/205/209 firmwares ONLY on my Asus WL-700gE router which also has an internal hard drive (upgraded to 750GB) and supports CIFS/SMB/NFS. SMB works fine, however I cannot get NFS to work with this router. I think it has something to do with the user with no password? I can enter a username but must enter a password into the router user configuration web page. Its really annoying. Tonight i will work on it some more.

Hi
My router is a DGL 4300 D-link and there are known issues regarding wireless transfers I have been told by their support. The fw I am using needs to be upgraded. Since I cannot even uppgrade the damn thing to their new fw on their homepage I will now take it back to the store and get a new one. I have concluded that all my trouble is due to bad hardware and will post how my new one is doing tomorrow.
Good luck with your stuff qz3fwd !

Thank you & Bye for now,
Brey

Bruno.

Hello all,

I followed Brunos advice, but I did NOT manage to get my TVIX online wireless !
I was using WEP 128 bit encryption and that was the problem.
In this document: http://www.rhisc.nl/doc/wireless_network.pdf
you can read the following:

Currently supported of the WEP settings are the OPEN System and Shared System. Also, the WEP 64-Bit key is only supported and WPA and RADIUS server are not supported.

Changing to 64 bit WEP and a 8 character network key made the whole thing work ! Thanks god.....

Kind regards,
Brey

Hey guys, I'm currently replaceing a Mediagate MG-350 that crapped out on me after the first couple of days. However, while I'm working on that, I wanted to ask if anyone here knew the plus' or minus' between that unit and the Tvix unit.

I understand that the 5000 isn't readily available these days, but the 4000 will be shortly. My understanding is that the 4000 simply lacks the wirelees (which is fine for my needs).

Any comparisons or experiences between the MG and the Tvix would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It depends on where you are. I bought my Tvix 4000 last week from kjglobal.co.uk.
I reckon that they deliver to all Europe (no import tax charged).

5000=MG350 less: internal wireless (can be added through USB) and NDAS; plus: FTP, much better firmware, HDTV support (when the receiver will be available)

4000=5000 less HDTV, plus better look to fit with other equipment.

I purchased the 4000 because the 5000 was impossible to match to my existing equipment.

Are you saying the DGL-4300 doesn't work with the tvix? or is it just wireless problems?
I have read a few post somewhere else about wireless trouble with fw1.7. Most of them have downgraded to fw1.6 if that happens.

Personally I use the 4300, but only wired to my 5000. It works like a charm. Streaming from two PC's using NFS and a ReadyNas (NFS). No problems.
I have no need for wireless to the tvix, although I have a laptop w/wireless which sometimes looses connection. I have tried to fix it, trying several different (internal) wireless cards... still not 100% all the time. I do suspect some of my neighbours though (interference). Have also tried different channels.
Sry for a little off-topic discussion.

BOYCOTT tvix!!!

I have contacted tivx support about two issues. The first is the availability of their source code. The answer was "we do not release our code"

The second was a request to implement file sharing service (NFS or SAMBA) to overcome the limitation of the FTP service.

The answer was that they do not have plans to implement these services.

I have replied again asking to reconsider, due to the strong community demand for a decent network integration requiring to share the tvix internal drive.

Here I CALL TO BOYCOTT further purchases of tvix products in order to make tvix hear the strong voice of their customers community.

Please, support this initiative, either getting in touch with tvix making the same demand if you have already a tvix device, or by putting on hold any planned purchase.

Hi
I read about the fw 1.7 issue as well and since you know about DGL 4300 they
have alot of issues with DGL 4300 A3 fw 1.6W and up. You can guess which one
I got last thursday ;)
I couldn't even upgrade it to 1.7 (not that that had helped) The dlink support
actually suggested that I tried it at another PC =??! I mean WHAT ?
I said "Nuff's enuff" (after 5 days of trying just about any setup)
so I guess it was just a bad mother of a router. I guess
you have a DGL 4300 A2 fw 1.6 or so ?? they're supposed to be dynamite :p
Annyway enuf said about the that.

haydude and others:
The NFS issue has (of course) been up for discussion several times.
Dvico has stated somewhere, but I can't find it, that the CPU power or if it was memory availability, in the Tvix is the limitation for not implementing NFS.
And the reason for not implementing thumbnail view of photos. (Although they were considering a "icon mode" for photos as well as.)

Assuming they are not lying it's a bit like asking for x.264 support. It just won't happen.

Boycott??? I have never seen a company bring so many updates with so many fixes and new features in rather short time. So I say the opposite:
Buy an extra one to the keep them making new devices based on newer chips. :D

Ziv_r, one more question about these universal remotes (maybee off topic
but anyway)
In the setup the tvix exist in the remote as a DVD which is cool, that works
just fine. But I have a DVD player as well and wondered where one would setup
that decive in the remote. How have you done ? Have you a DVD player as well
and if so is it setup under another device (ie DVR or VCR or something) I only have
8 pre setups in my Harmony and with Tuner, DVD, CD, TV etc I need to figure out
where to input my DVD player since the setup for just DVD is taken (TViX got the
slot)

Sorry if it sound weird but do your best my frd ;) :p

I'm using the Harmony 885, I've create differents actions (listen music, play video, see photos...) and I use with my 5.1 amplifier and projector.
It works fine, except the arrow up/down when you are in a menu to choose a title because it moves 2 titles each time. I supose it can be solved changing some parameters in the 885 adding more time for this function, etc.

Hi Jordi, Nice to hear you have the same remote as me :D

I've done some research about the "doubble skipping" thing and if you go into
http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board?board.id=programming&page=1 You will find that an answer is there. Seems that harmony sends 3 signals
to ensure it will be recieved and this nomber can be lowered. Not the right forum

and it works perfect with my Tvix, DVD, PC, blah blah In short: IT WORKS ;)

Hi,
First I'd like to point you to xxxxxxx a site concerning the Maxtor Shared Storage and more recently also the Maxtor Shared Storage II

I saw some doucment somewhere in a dutch post, see my previous post also for the URL.

Starting with firmware 2.1.0, if guest access fails, the TVIX will try authenticating with 'tvixhd1' as the username and password. So if you set up such an acct, you'll be able to get to it via the TVIX.

2. Can the tvix see subfolders under that share name (or any share name if tvixhd1 is not required)?

Thanks guys

Hi,
Just a quick question. I see Windows Services for Unix is mentioned a lot.
I did a quick search for it, but nada... it also seems that microsoft have removed it from the download section.

Any good sites where I might find it?
I will do some more searching for it as well.

Dear tvix-veterans, I have a couple of basic questions for you that I couldn't find answers to by browsing the entire thread (2 hrs). I'd be very thankful for any help with:

1. My FTP-connection was broken and left a file with the extenstion .upload - I get a prompt reading something like "unreadable file" when failing to delete the file, solution?

2. Everytime I restart my M-4000P I need to push TV-out several times to get a picture, saving the A/V-settings doesn't seem to help me avoing that hassle. Why?

Hey i think i can help you with the first question. Try to run a CHKDSK in a DOS-Window on your TVIX. That fixes the broken file and you'll be able to delete it

One question i got: Did DVICO fix the USB-Bug with external Harddrives? My TVIX still freeze from time to time when i play a movie file of a external Disc...

Any help would be appreciated

2. Have you checked auto settings for NTSC/PAL? Maybe you got some settings set to a wrong format or device with lack of support.

DOH, I just learned I am a complete wanker, after some hours of deep set frustration I just realized I actually installed the NTSC firmware upgrade after purchasing my Tvix yesterday.

OK, no probs I happily thought, however - now I can't install the PAL-version, I get a prompt saying something like "This is not a valid .fwp-file, you may download one from...". Since that place is exactly where I downloaded it from I suppose I must have screwed my system up by installing the NTSC 2.1.0.

Now, is there a kind soul that could help me out of this mess? How do I install PAL 2.1.0 after installing NTSC 2.1.0???

Regards from a cloudy mind in snowy Stockholm, Sweden.

Well, from the same cold place (-11.4 C) I can tell you that at least so far it has never mattered if you install NTSC or PAL versions of the SW, other than the default settings. You can change it and save in the settings menu.

If you have no picture on the TV just press TV Out numerous times until you get a picture.
Then change the settings.

The "not valid fwp file" indicates just that. Things you can try:
- have you really unzipped the file?
- download it again. You most probably need to empty ALL Temporary Internet Files

Thanks for your help dear fellow Swede, well - after trying a bunch of times the Tvix accepted the freshly downloaded PAL-version. (YES, I unzipped it the first time, I'm not that bakom flötet). And as you correctly say - that didn't solve my problems. At all.

Does anyone have an idea of what my problem could be? Do I own a unique LCD that doesn't work with 1080i? The strip on the left side is KILLING me and makes me have to go with a much lower resolution (480P/576P, yields 750*576, 50 hz by the information from my Loewe Individual).

Any experience on settings and such would be very helpful and warmly appriciated. 720*576, 50 hz SUCKS from a brand new high-end receiver and a brand new high-end LCD. Would the RGB/YPbPr selection have anything to do with it? I'm no good with A/V (as if you couldn't tell by my confusion).

And the biggest mystery remains: Why does 1024*768 work just fine (yields 1024*768, 60 hz + switches to NTSC) after applying the selection in the A/V-settings, but not after restarting?

Kind Regards/D

DOH, it was the LCD that caused my problems, apparently Loewe Individual has a very well hidden setting called geometry, that setting caused the "black stripe" since the pic wasn't centered.

Still - one question remains: in order to obtain a higher resolution with 60 hz I need to use 1024*768, but that setting wont be saved by the Tvix, even though it works when configuring manually. Thus, I need to config the Tvix for 1024*768 manually everytime I start in order to obtain the highest, possible resolution for my equipment. Now, that must be a bug.

Reporting back from almost the same cold place (but we are almost covered in snow here now...never stops).

The tvix should remember the settings. At least my 5000 does that.
Have you tried reflashing the firmware?
So the Lowe LCD you have will not accept 720p, 1080i on its DVI or HDMI connector...? I know many TV's have "trouble" when using the VGA connector, i.e. max resolution is normally 1024x768. But you are using DVI out right?

Have you tried component ? Although a bit softer than DVI, the TV might behave otherwise.

I think the RGB/YPbPr selection only applies if you are using component or a DVI-I to VGA dongle? I might be wrong as I have played with those controls for some time.

This might sound stupid, but you are saving the selected settings?

And using the TV-out button on the remote does nothing good towards getting any signal to your LCD TV? (pressing it many times will make the output goes thru 480i, 576i, 720, 1080i etc)

Lykke til!

This I haven't seen before.

When playing back certain xvids the 5000 act weird.
For instance, "goto" does not work, at least the film do not start, and its time counter is somewhere else.

If I FFW and press play, the pictures freezes while sound is ok. If I then tries 2x FFW I get the fastmoving picture (and of course no sound). If play is pressed again, it freezes up again. After some time the film is back, but sound is gone... Weird...

This is only for some films/episodes. So far I found two which acts this weird.
It is reproducable...

I have never ever seen this, and are now running 2.1.0 for a week or so.

Oh, I forgot... If played without FFW or that sort of thing, it plays fine.

Anybody else seen this?

Yes, I have seen that, and it seem to be the video file that is lees than 100% accurate.
Solution that worked for me:
- Open the file in VirtualDub
- make sure you select "ask for extended options after this dialog", and select the file.
- Select "re-derive keyframe flags"
- press Ok, and wait (usually a long time) until the movie is loaded.
- Under both Video and audio menus, select "Direct Stream Copy.
- Save the new file with "Save as AVI".
This saves the file without reencoding, but with the key frame flags.

Now REW, FFW, Goto and time info, shall all be correct.

Jofa, thanks for a quick reply! I did try that a few hours ago, without success (VirtualDubmod). But it certainly seems that the film is damaged, since input is 2GB, outout is 400MB... I have seen that before on other "corrupted" files.
Oh well, I better start the thing and just let it play by itself till I'm back where I stopped it. As it plays fine if I do not mess with it.

Also it is important to select Direct Stream Copy on both Video and Audio.

Hello, I'm a new TViX user, and so far it's a cool little device. I've been reading all about setting up the wallpapers and Icons for video and it's works very well. One question, is it possible to have icons for photos also? I added the icon.tvix file to a folder w/ photos in it and when I look at that folder on the TViX it doesn't display anything. I'm assuming it's thinking my image jpg is the icon jpg, and it is looking for another file also, am I missing something?

I can't get the icon thingy to work, I saved an empty file created with Wordpad as icon.tvix (yes, i also removed the .txt). I then copied a bunch of pictures from IMDB naming them exactly as i named the .iso-files. That is for Casino Royale.iso I put in a picture file called Casino Royale.jpg - still it doesn't work. Do I need to change how the files are viewed from a list to icons or something? I tried that from Windows with no results. I keep my .iso's in a subfolder to video called dvd-r, but i can't imagine that to be the problem???

Anyone have some experience on where I go wrong? Most thankful for any help.

No, it's not possible to have icons for photos... :(

swedish hef: is yout firmware newer than 1.98? 2.10 is the latest released version.
Icons were introduced in 1.9.5 or 1.9.8 or so, but with some bugs. Now fixed.

Other things to check:
- are the files REALLY spelled exactly the same, with small and CAPITAL letters?
- the image size can be, but shall preferably be 100 x 136. I don't what what max size that works.
- Could the pictures be called .jpeg instead of .jpg?

jofa, thanks for your help - but i seem to comply with everything you mentioned.

firmware 2.10a

yup, files are spelled exactly the same
images are from imdb: 100X122
pictures are saved "as default" from imdb: .jpg

now, that file tvix.icon can't have anything to do with it, can it? my file is named exactly so, NOT tvix.icon.txt.

frustrating...

In your first post you say that you have a icon.tvix, which is correct,
but in your last post you say tvix.icon, which is wrong.

ah, sorry - i've always had an "icon.tvix", just got it wrong in my last post. also, the problem is solved, i just had to run a chkdsk. which i seem to have to do whenever making any changes whatsoever. a bit too time-consuming for my taste.

i connect via usb, is there any special procedures i should consider when disconnecting? right now i just pull out the usb-cord from the computer and the tvix and obviously that screws the directory up even though i don't understand why. Also, I seem to have to reboot the tvix every second time i disconnect in order to get back from the "usb-mode" (the screen on the tvix says "usb off" but i can't get from there).

Tips and tricks? Jofa? Anyone?

Thanks in advance.

swedish hef,

On your taskbar, once you have inserted a usb disk device, you have a small icon for unplugging devices, and right (or was it left? (I'm all Linux at home)) click to select something like "safely remove hardware"

Jofa... tried again without the Mod (aka VirtualDub). Re-derived the flags (which took forever). Selected direct stream for both audio and video.
However, the output file is just 420MB (should be 2GB), so there is definitely something wrong with the file.

Oh well, I better just start the damn file and let it run its course till where I first started to FFW...

Btw, has anyone seen that one some files the tvix nows hang when FFW 16 or 32 times. I need to reboot the thing... but on others it works... another weird thing.
maybe I should go back to 2.0.9 and see if the same thing happens. Can't say I have seen all these issues before.
In the whole it is sad if DVICO actually introduce more bugs when fixing others.

I'm running 2.1.1 and having all sorts of troubles with some of my .tp files. I was streaming them off of my server and thought i was having network issues, so i copied them to the internal drive on my tvix - problems still happen - try to skip 15 seconds and it jumps back to the beginning or hangs or kicks out of the file. Using Goto works, but press it again and it shows 00:00:00 for the time no matter where i am in the file.

Oh well... looks like i'll be going back to something more stable... 2.0.x? What have people found to be most stable?

Thanks

Although I agree that different firmware versions seem to have varied video playback stability, I have found that a problematic files usually is problematic on several firmware versions. (I won't write all since I haven't tried all)

Repairing the video file using, mpeg2repair, hdtv2mpeg2 or virtualdub has fixed most files for me.
There are instructions in this thread and other parts of the forum. http://www.videohelp.com is a good source of help also.

Anyone with different conclusions?

Good luck.

PS. Let's say your BluRay player is often occupied by spouse or kids, then you might be interested in this thread, for instructions on how to play your backup on the Tvix, if the video source is MPEG2:

Thanks for the info. I find it interesting that I have trouble playing back files created using my Dvico Fusion HDTV5 lite (recorded using BeyondTV). The files all play back, I just get weirdness with some of them like i described.

FYI - all of these files play back perfectly in TheaterTek, but I was sick of using an HTPC for playback.

Fellow tvix citizens!

I had some strange problems with my Tvix lately.
Once and a while the Tvix turns it self off when trying to browse files in my networked Laptop (wich is connected wireless). First i thought it was just a bug, but yesterday (and a few weeks earlier) i've been having some real problems trying to connect to folders on my network that contains another folder wich contains anything from 2-20 MP3 files.
Tvix shutsdown immidiately i don't even get inside the folder.

I tried to listen to some music yesterday and was really pissed when i could'nt connect to my ****.
Anyone else experienced this or know what can cause this problem?

Shall i make a fix-request?

Hi,
If I connect the Tvix 5000 to my PC to transfer files with the original Tvix cable I have no problems, but if I use another USB cable (if checked with 3 differents) I have problems and my PC does not recognize the device. Same problem if I use another cable with my external HD Lacie different of the Tvix cable or the one included with the external HD.
I need a longer USB cable, so my question is: Why a standard USB cable is not working with my Tvix or laCie? What kind of cable I have to buy to connect it?
Thanks,

Hola !

I have tested now with 3 different USB2 cables (you are using USB2 in all cases right?) and I have no problem whatsoever "seeing" the TViX or making my PC (windows XP home edition) connect. IMHO there's no magic in the USB from DVICO. There must be another error your end (sorry :( )

I also have some issues with the PC 'seeing' the Tvix via the USB cable. The PC can detect there is a connection but cannot decide what the device is. I suspect it is because I am using a 15ft USB cable which is the technical limit. (PC is 14ft from the Tvix unit which is handy).

Simply unplugging and plugging the cable back in to the PC fixes the issue eventually. (can take 10 times). Once I have a connection though I can transfer files with no issue.

Not a big problem for me. I only transfer files once every couple of weeks.
