Have you tried Barry Gordon's DVDO utility for the firmware updates? I used to use that for both the 30 and the 50 (with Vista), but with the 50Pro I use Tera Term.

I thought it would be helpful for others to see the defective caps that have been referred to in previous posts. I haven't performed the replacement yet but the output voltage of my supply was only 3.6V under load and my VP30 would just constantly reboot. Although these caps didn't completely "pop" you can see some brown residue on the top (which is the leaked electrolyte fluid) as well as the caps are more of a dome shape rather than flat. For comparison you can see the smaller cap next to these 2 which has a flat top and no residue. I already have closed up my VP30 but I really wonder if 6V is required for an input voltage. I imagine that they might have an internal 5V rail which would require higher than 5V coming in or they could have just chosen a 6V supply since those aren't standard in the industry and they wanted people to come back to them. Anyway, just thought I'd share a couple of pictures for everyone to see. tbase1 10-18-09, 03:30 PM Can a vp30 bypass via hdmi 1080p and how? bobloblaw 10-19-09, 10:43 AM Can a vp30 bypass via hdmi 1080p and how? Assuming by "bypass" you mean passthrough 1080p signals, then yes, the VP30 can do this. It's available in firmware version 1.14. Firmware available here (http://www.anchorbaytech.com/support/software_downloads/update/vp30.beta_agreement.php). tbase1 10-19-09, 03:43 PM what menu do I go into to pass through? What is the Sync type for anyway, regarding H+V+, H-V-..etc. on the VP30? Cant remember any source or display Ive used that the HV and +- settings has had any dif. with. I guess this has something to do with RGB inputs/outputs that I do not use often. But still when I set source and display to RGB, well not much happens when I change between the HV sync types? Hope someone knowledgeable on this feature on the VP30 can enlighten me on it. JoshA 10-22-09, 03:26 PM The sync polarity settings are really for a CRT front projector and the analog outputs on the VP30, although with some of the older Panasonic plasmas these were needed to get 1:1 pixel mapping with the HDMI output on VP30 and the DVI input on the display. Thanks. Great to know finally. Once tried this setting out with a 5 cable analog run (RGBHV) to a Sony HT-VW10 projector and it did not matter at all. So now I know this setting is to specific to even matter at all with most setups. THX again.;) PS: Still prefer my VP-30/ABT102 for SD sources over both my OPPO-83 and Toshiba XA2. Is there any way to program the pass-through to a specific input? It seems like if I (for example) use HDMI4 and got to the input adjustment and set pass-through, the signal will be unprocessed also when I switch to HMDI 1, 2 or 3. Is there a way around this problem? In the perfect world, I would like to make it so easy that my wife can watch BluRay without having to change anything... just a push of a single button and everything works... bobloblaw 10-26-09, 04:16 PM PS: Still prefer my VP-30/ABT102 for SD sources over both my OPPO-83 and Toshiba XA2. Video 10-27-09, 12:19 PM This is a strange question, but can my VP30 down-covert 1080P to 720P? My projector is still only a 720P machine. My source is a Xtreamer digital player and I have ripped all my BluRays to 1080p video. My Xtreamer digital player does not have a selector to choose 720P output, so I need to rely on my scaler to down-covert until I am able to buy a 1080p projector. Does anyone know if this will work? stretch437 10-29-09, 04:02 PM 1080p can be passed through but not downscaled if i am reading the relevant (1.12 is the version where pass through first appeared) release notes correctly. 1080i can be deinterlaced and then downscaled. if your Xtreamer can output 1080i that's your best bet. sonic_blue 12-04-09, 11:01 AM I have a question that will either make or break my purchase of a VP30, so if anyone can answer this question I would be extremely appreciative: Can the VP30 do gamma adjustment on a 1080i input, then pass it out as 1080i but without doing any de-interlacing processing? Basically I want to gamma correct a 1080i input but I don't want the VP30 screwing up the picture quality with its field scaling. I'm not sure if gamma correction will trigger the VP30 into doing it's field scaling thing. Also a not so critical question: If the VP30 is outputting analogue video (YPrPb), is there anywhere to output analogue audio or do you have to use the digital audio out? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can answer these questions! Slonk 12-04-09, 02:31 PM Can the VP30 do gamma adjustment on a 1080i input, then pass it out as 1080i but without doing any de-interlacing processing? No. If the VP30 is outputting analogue video (YPrPb), is there anywhere to output analogue audio or do you have to use the digital audio out?Digital audio out only. If you need analog audio, you will need a seperate convertor (you can use a cheap mini-disk recorder for this). sonic_blue 12-04-09, 07:03 PM No. Thanks for the quick reply. So I take it with gamma adjustment on a 1080i source you would get the de-interlacing artefacts, or is it just incapable of adjusting gamma on 1080i altogether? Slonk 12-05-09, 07:35 AM Thanks for the quick reply. So I take it with gamma adjustment on a 1080i source you would get the de-interlacing artefacts, or is it just incapable of adjusting gamma on 1080i altogether?Every 1080i field is processed on its own, including gamma adjustment and whatever you choose. It is not interlaced. Instead every 1080i field (540 lines) is directly scaled to a 1080p frame. In the process every other field is vertically shifted for half a line to vertically align the frames. This means there will never be combing because there never is any mixing of 1080i fields. On the other hand, you do not have "true" 1080p lines of video because the information of the two 1080i fields is averaged over two 1080p frames. They say it looks reaonably nice. sonic_blue 12-05-09, 09:57 PM Every 1080i field is processed on its own, including gamma adjustment and whatever you choose. It is not interlaced. Im am slightly confused by this. Are you saying it takes a 540 line field, upscales it to a 1080p frame, shifts everything up one line, then applies gamma correction, then re-interlaces it back into a 540 line field for 1080i output? Do you know the technique used to convert the 1080p frames back into 540 line fields? If it just picks out every odd/even line from the 1080p frame then theoretically the 1080i output should be the same as the 1080i input and no quality should be lost. In theory, of course. Or is it the shifting vertically of one line that screws it up? mtnrick 12-14-09, 09:01 AM I just upgraded my projector to a 1080p unit (Panny PT-AE4000U), connected to the VP30 via component-to-RGB 15 Pin input (the same projector input that was used for the old 720p unit). After about 15 minutes of watching any source in 1080p, I get wide flashing white bars that flicker several times a second in various places on the screen -- primarily top and bottom, but in the middle of the frame as well. Switching to 1080i resolves the problem, but the consequence is a mediocre picture. Strangely, after going to 1080i briefly I can switch back to 1080p but 10 minutes or so the problem resumes. Am I missing something on the VP30 setup that would correct this issue? bfrench 12-24-09, 06:27 AM hi, I'm having a problem sending audio from xbox and ps3 to my plasma via HDMI through the VP30. I guess it must be just a setting somewhere but I've looked at all the audio references in the manual and I seem to have everything set correctly. Any ideas? thanks in advance. bfrench 12-24-09, 11:05 AM Panic over I found someone else who had the same problem here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/video-scalers-video-processing-progressive-scan/655833-dvdo-iscan-vp30-missing-audio.html JoshA 12-25-09, 10:30 PM bfrench - The issue that you are having is related to EDID and audio decoding. Your plasma's EDID communicated the audio/video capabilities to downstream devices so it does not receive a format (audio or video) that it cannot handle. The VP30 is breaking this communication stream and inserting it's own EDID that the downstream devices see. This allows you to get all resolutions out of HDMI devices to be processed by the VP30, the issue is that the assumption is that a system with a VP in it also has a surround sound decoder in it and as such the VP30 allows downstream devices to output Dolby and DTS surround formats. This is great when there is a surround decoder in the system but can cause issues when a display only has a decoder that can handle 2 channel stereo (PCM). While troubleshooting this issue you can easily pull out your hair because it doesn't matter which setting you touch in the plasma or VP30 you won't get sound and as soon as you remove the VP30 everything works. The work around is to go into the setup menus of your sources and insure that all audio is down-mixed to 2 channel stereo (PCM only). bfrench 12-27-09, 12:08 PM Thanks Josh, all ok now, exactly as you describe. dottore62 01-08-10, 06:12 PM hello everybody, i just bought a vp 30 +plus abt 102 + sdi card some months ago but i didn't use it until now. Basically (as some of you know) I'm trying to find out a way to use something like an HDMI splitter to connect a bluray player to both the VP30 and a new AVR that sounds great, but I really don't want the AVR handling the video--not even passthrough video (that's why I have the VP30!). I haven't bought the AVR yet so I can't try this out myself. If it works as I hope then I can spend money on a better sounding AVR and not have to worry about the AVR's video capabilities... So I'm wondering if I could use an HDMI splitter and connect the two splitter outputs to the VP30 and my AVR, and tell the VP30 to take its audio from the toslink input... If this works, it accomplishes two goals: A) downstream television receives picture from VP30 HDMI input, and audio from VP30 toslink input (configured for 2ch stereo in the bluray player). TV therefore has video + stereo sound, to be enjoyed with daddy isn't home to run the "big speakers." B) high-def (HDMI) audio from the bluray player is routed to the AVR (and ignored by the VP30), so that when activated, daddy's "big speakers" turn on. In that scenario, we just mute the TV.... So, my question about the VP30 is this: Q) If I setup the VP30 to have an HDMI input's audio come from one of the toslink inputs, how does the VP30 handle the EDID negotiation coming from the downstream television set -- will it pass through only the video portion back to the bluray player since the VP30 is setup to ignore the HDMI audio stream? If it strips the audio portion of the TV's EDID data, then I'm all good. If it still passes through ALL the TV's EDID data then the bluray player will negotiate the "lowest common denominator" between the TV and the AVR, which would be 2ch stereo downmix, and I'm still just plain out-of-luck (really can't afford to upgrade to an Edge). Is there anyone that knows the answer or could try it out and report back? I would be most grateful! thanks, ..dane audiodane 03-26-10, 02:53 PM Questions answered.. VP30 doesn't pass EDID the way Edge does, it only communicates EDID input capabilities of the VP30 (and scales/converts to whatever necessary for output device). The EDGE passes downstream device information, not the VP30. cheers, ..dane audiodane 03-28-10, 11:02 AM I'm having a really strange problem with my VP30 and 1080p passthrough mode... Has anyone else seen this problem?? I have a VP30+ABT102 and have been using the Auto-Input-Switching functionality. Recently I have attempted to hook up two different DVD players via HDMI (my first HDMI sources), an Oppo 970hd (DVD only) and an Oppo BD83 (Bluray). Both exhibit different problems: Oppo DV-970HD DVD Player: - When the DV-970HD is in standby mode and the VP30 in "Auto" mode, the VP30 selects the DV-970HD's HDMI output. INFO shows that there is no video signal, and no audio signal, yet it continues to remain on DV-970HD's input. During this operation the DVDO has a solid red indicator light. Oppo BDP-83 Bluray Player: - When the Oppo BDP-83 bluray player is powered down, the auto-input-switch operation of the VP30 seems to switch back to the next highest priority active input (indicator light on the front of the unit blinks through the different colors as it switches inputs), and the sound is properly switched. Through the TV I can hear the next-lower-priority audio track. However, the display itself is blank/black. (VP30 shows a solid blue status LED on front panel) Pushing "INFO" on the remote shows the info screen on the VP30 front panel but nothing is shown on the TV display.. still just black. Pushing that input's direct-select button on the VP30 remote has no effect. However if you first push any other direct-input-select button, the VP30 switches to that input properly (active or not). Hitting "Auto" again after that does in fact return to the previous next-highest-priority input, and this time audio and video both come through properly. I believe this problem is related to the pass-through mode of the VP30. - Note that when the bluray player is set to 1080p (passthrough mode) and turned off (to cause this problem), and the HDMI cable is disconnected between the player and the VP30, the issue REMAINS. This indicates the VP30 has in fact switched back to the lower-priority input, yet the video output remains black (not even VP30's INFO screen shows). - Note also that this problem only occurs when the player is set to 1080p (invoking VP30's passthrough). This strange operation does not occur when the bluray player is set to output lower resolutions (1080i or less). It seems to only occur when coming OUT of pass-through mode. This seems to reinforce the idea that it might be related to pass-through mode. - When the bluray player is playing 1080p (passthrough on VP30) and the HDMI cable is removed during playback, the same result; blank/black screen, but audio from the next-highest-priority input. - When in this sound-but-no-video mode, cycling power on the VP30 causes the VP30 to again operate properly. (same result as forcing a different input and then hitting "auto" again.) My equipment setup: - Panasonic TC-P50G10 (50" plasma, 2009 model year) - VP30 - Oppo DV-970HD - Oppo BDP-83 - Tivo series 2 (next lower priority input) - NOTE: The same symptoms occur whether or not the TV set is actually turned on during these steps. Even with the TV off, the same situations occur. Once the TV is turned on, even though the VP30 seems to have down-selected to the next-priority input (solid blue light on VP30), there is no picture. Therefore I do not believe it is a handshaking problem with the TV set. Have anyone seen this behavior before? I am running firmware 1.14... thanks, ..dane Baller5247 06-17-10, 06:47 PM Does anyone know if the VP30 will support a 3d signal? The VP30 is going on being a 5 year old design now, no one was even giving any thought at all to 3D support in a product back then.
