I cant seem to get the vga input working with my pc.
I have a male-male vga cable, have tried it to my video card vga and also to the DVI with an adapter.
The nvidia driver detects the dv10, but when I set it up as a second monitor and hit the source button on the remote, there is no signal found on vga.
I have tried as a single primary monitor also, but the projector still finds no signal.
I have tried 640x480, 1024x768 and 848x480 resolutions, true color at 60hz.
Is there something Im missing here?

EDIT: just tried with an old 14" monitor using vga cable and DVI adapter, it works fine but still no luck with the DV10

Well I just tried it again, this time following the optoma advice - turn on the projector first, then the computer. But I would like to use it as a secondary display, which means it needs to sync after bootup, which I cant seem to get working.
As primary monitor it seemed to work ok with 640x480, 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

So I have a couple questions:
How to use it as a secondary display?
How can I get it to detect widescreen resolutions like 848(or 854)x480?

I recently sold my Optoma EP719 because i wanted a projector with a native widescreen resolution and right now im looking at the MovieTime projector and the Infocus 4805 which do you guys think is better honestly? i dont really need the onboard dvd player i mean it wouldnt hurt but im not sure if id use it much also i have external speakers already so i probably wouldnt use that much either i think i saw earlyer in the thread that the MovieTime scored just below the Faroudji which is the chip the 4805 uses so im guessing that the 4805 is slightly better? im not sure about the movie time because i have my projector mounted on a shelf behind my head and if i stick it there the smallest image i could get is 112" and i sit about 11 feet back from that which isnt really optimal i mean im sure it would still look good. but im just curious which one you think would be better? i like both and both have great reviews..i just cant make a decision

I'm getting one for the sheer brightness it offers, 850 tuned lumens. After using the DV10 on the Porch for hot summer nights it's a must have, summer just wouldn't be the same.

As far as using it inside. If you could use it sitting on the floor under a coffee table that would work great. All you need is a low priced 40 foot toslink cable which isnt' too obtrusive, when finished just remove the cable out of the way. Leave the DV10 hiding under the table

A million uses. I could take it over to my audio buddies house. He's from the south, I could play "The Last Waltz" The Band. He's from the south is an audiophile and never listened to The Band. :( Movie time wake up call. :)

I bought the optoma dv10 movietime yesterday in Australia. I was so excited when I got it that I closed the curtains and set it up with some light leaking in. Setup was 5min flat. The images were stunning with great blacks and excellent vibrant colours.
See my pics below - I got better at taking pics toward the end. NB these are handheld and ISO1600 - projected to a white wall with minimal calibration - one day Ill set up a tripod and get better pics
edit - sorry forum wont let me post a url to my page of pics yet until 5 posts

I am very happy with the projector and bought because of your raving reviews here
Thanks all for the mosquito noise tip

However I have run into a snag
Ive had trouble connecting my apple powerbook via vga cable. Some guy on amazon reviews had same prob. The powerbook recognises the projector as a optoma dv10. The projector doesnt find a source. Connecting via svideo is fine but crappy pic.
I emailed tech support who were unhelpful - stating its designed for dvd projection and not computers. They said macs are not supported, and even most pc's dont work. The specs on their webpage clearly state - compatible with pc's and mac.
I find this hard to believe
The review on machome
clearly states 'We hooked up desktop and laptop Macs with no problem, and we could use it as a primary, secondary or mirrored display'

Can anyone confirm a problem? or success? with either pc or mac

Or you can just get the H31 instead....super quite fan.

If you really want portability, the movietime is it. If you're gonna ceiling mount, get the H31.

Greetings!

I recently purchased the MovieTime. My last projector was a Sony VPL-DS100. I have a couple of questions. First is in regards to PC connection.

Fortunately, mine works fine. However, my laptop has a native resolution of 1400x1050. I was under the impression that the max resolution this projector can compress is exactly that, but the projector shows only a portion of the screen, and scrolls to show additional screen area when you move the mouse whichever way.

It seems all other resolutions fill the screen without the "framed" effect. Given, 1400x1050 compressed is not pretty and probably unreadable but I think it's silly to advertise the max resolution as something it can't show all at once.

Anyone have favorite settings for this projector? Especially for computer display. Video looks natural but computer seems to be a little bit hopeless. What is the connection between the ImageAI color mode and having ImageAI on and off in the other setting?

My opinions:

The smell of the unit is not too harsh. Like most scents, you'll get used to it after a few minutes of being exposed to it, unless you have your nose air outtake.

Runs very hot - but maybe that's just because I'm compelled to pick up the unit on either end, one of which is where the scorching air is propelled out.

Regardless, from what I've watched thus far the MovieTime seems to be a fantastic machine for movies and video.

Thanks :)

So what does this machine smell like exactly? Does it smell like bacon and eggs, seagull droppings, or what? I've heard it runs hot as well. These two issues seem like potential hangups for me personally. I hope it smells like bacon and eggs because I'm on a diet and I can watch a movie and satisfy my breakfast craving all at once

The smell is rather difficult to describe. Unfortunately, it's more plastic/electronic than bacon and eggs. Although, there is some unique flare to it. I keep thinking of some sort of wood burning scent, but lightly pungent.

I'd say up close you get the more distinct smell, when it fills the room it's more or less a plastic smell.

I haven't noticed the warmth of the unit to render the room uncomfortable or anything, and I recall having the temperature rise rapidly with my Sony.

It certainly is hot to the touch though, so adjusting or moving while it's active is not withstandable for very long and I always let mine cool off pretty well before packing it up.

I'll see about better classifying the scent.

My Sony VAIO Z1 shows up without hesitation, aside from the annoying 1400x1050 compression problem I questioned earlier.

Works on both external only and external + regular monitor, however, the one time I tried setting the external (movietime) to a secondary display it seemed to show a weird grey unusuable output. So, I haven't had success with making it a secondary display. ATI graphics.

the smell will abate over time. after 50 hours or so i no longer detect it.

In the middle of watching some of Ice Age. Fantastic picture on just my bedroom wall (white with a coating of semi-glossy "sealant").

Dark levels, especially when mixed with lighter colors on screen, are amazing. Even in this room with all these white walls reflecting the light. Using setting vivid. I wasn't seeing much difference in this situation when turning ImageAI and Brite Mode on and off.

I'm at about 10 hours on my unit and the smell is really beginning to decrease, mostly noticable right at the air vent.

I don't see a big problem with screen door effect as others have mentioned. I can sit only few (5-10) feet back and only notice the pixels in solid colors when I really focus on it.

Couple of questions on the DK sub that is included...

- Does it come with a mini pin to RCA adaptor to hook up the sub to the projector?

- How is the sound quality of the sub?

txmatt
12-28-05, 10:38 AM
Yes, the sub comes with a fairly long (maybe 6') 1/8" mini-stereo headphone to RCA (left and right) cable.

The sub is what is to be expected from a small, lightweight, inexpensive, low-powered "sub"woofer. It adds presence and bottom end to the obviously small speakers in the Movietime but doesn't provide deep and/or visceral bass. It's decent for what it is and does improve the sound.

If the cord that comes with it isn't long enough, get either a headphone extension cable or and RCA extension cable to allow you to put it in a corner. Corner placement usually augments low frequencies and will help the little sub sound a bit fuller.

Alright, here's the deal. I want a projector that I can use in my room (11 feet long, about 9 feet wide). I'm a newbie who'll be using the projector mainly for watching DVD's, but also playing one of the newer game systems (360 or PS3). I hear this projector is decent with rainbows, so I'm not too concerned about those. Here's my questions about this unit:
1. Will HD programming and gaming look good on this PJ? Since the 360 is great for the 720p stuff, how will it look on the MovieTime at 480p? This is very important to me!
2. Occasionally, my friends and I like to sit around and sip coctails. If I was to put in a CD, is there some kind of graphics mode that will throw some cool colors and/or shapes, etc onto a screen while a CD plays (kinda like one of those trippy PC sound programs or screensavers). This would be a lot of fun. I'm optomistic, but I think I'd be relegated to music DVD's.
3. Do the speakers sound like tin cans if you turn them up high? Is there any real fear of blowing them out?
4. Lastly, will this thing get me girls because my face looks like it was smashed with a frying pan  .
Thanks in advance and AVS forum rules!!!

Hehe.
Well if you are looking for 720p gaming, I dont think this one is for you. You could find a real 720p projector for not much more, and it would be better for HDTV.
Other than that, for small rooms this is an excellent choice, if you have a place to put it. Forget about ceiling mount or on a shelf. At about 9-10 feet this one cant be more than 1-2 feet off the floor.
No trippy visuals either, unless you count the screensaver, the word "Movietime" bouncing around the screen and changing colors.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I can rule this projector out since I do plan on participating in the latest round of videogame console wars and they'll be doing 720p mainly. I just really like what this projector is all about though. It breaks my heart that it probably won't fit my needs . This machine looks incredible and with that short throw distance it is tempting for me to just go out and get one, but movies aren't really my gig (except music DVD's and the like). I'm off to get a face lift. Wish me luck!

Hi all,
I have sometime to play around with my new MovieTime PJ on NewYear Eve party at my house. Hook it up with DTC100 (analog HD-15) 1080i - image is all green (like it detect as component). Then I hook it up with Samsung HD tuner using HD-15 and component (toggle switch in the back of HD tuner) : same thing happen - all green on both 480p and 720p !
At this time I try to play DVD - no sound !!!
To fix it, I have to turn off - unplug power cord to reset
After this point - DVD has sound again, but HD source is not stable (sync and drop sync)

Anyone know if we can bypass auto-detect signal ? my NEC PJ, I can set the inputs to be auto/component/VGA

Thanks

Im not sure this is it, but try changing the "Signal Type", either VGA or video. That is the only time I saw a green screen problem.

I was trying to playback a non-Dolby Digital DVD with regular stereo on my DV10, I had wired the optical out from the projector to my home theater receiver. The problem is that with simple stereo the volume level on the optical out is controlled by the volume button on the remote. So, if you want audio from optical out then you will have to put up with volume on the built-in speaker as well.
Is it just me or is this lame ?!
I tried asking optoma about this via e-mail but I got no answer.

So, if you want audio from optical out then you will have to put up with volume on the built-in speaker as well. i have read a few posts on this and am still confused...is it not possible to turn the volume on the remote down to zero and therefore silence the internal speakers and still put sound out to a receiver through the digital out...thus you can control volume through the receiver and silence the internal speakers ??

i guess that this is not possible but want to make sure because it's a deal killer for me (since i watch alone a lot and like to use dolby headphone for surround sound) and sure seems like a dumb design choice if you have to have the speakers on if you want to run the sound through your receiver

prod

I can turn it to zero and still have some output to the receiver.
It depends on the quality of your receiver. The projector volume also controls the level of the outputs, so if you turn the projector down, you really need to crank up the volume on your receiver. This may cause background hiss. Its also annoying when switching to another source afterward, as it can be very loud if you forget to turn it back down.

caw13
02-07-06, 01:44 PM
I also can turn it to zero and have output to the receiver. I have a Denon (don't recall model, but a couple of years old at least) receiver and have not had to crank the volume as prod has. No hissing whatsoever. Also, when switching between DVD and cable box (Comcast HD box) I have found no variation in volume.

I turn down the volume to zero on the DV10 and the internal speakers are silent. All volume is then controlled by the receiver which is connected by the optical out cable.

Two weeks ago I took delivery of an Optoma DV 10 with a bundled subwoofer from Futureshop.ca.

I chose the DV10 based largely on the review from Projector Central. I was looking for a coffee table solution to my room measuring 14'x18'x7'. I knew a native 16:9 DLP chip was what I wanted. So I brought home the company entry level 4:3 Toshiba projector just to test the room. Even with a humble entry level DLP, I was immediately blown away with the image quality in a light controlled room. I could hardly wait for the package to arrive.

I set it up in my light controlled recreational room projecting a 72" diagonal image onto a Draper Da-Lite white 72" screen and sit about 12 feet or 2.0x away. The DV10 sits on a table 22" high with its rear tilted up by 10mm to fit my screen height. The integrated DVD player meant that I didn't need another device, power cord to clutter. It also mean that I had a short digital connection from the player to the projector without needing to worry about cable runs, HDMI\DVI dropouts, RFI on component runs or any of those issues.

You can see a webpage of my setup in my signature.

In the future, I shall fashion a widget to lift it exactly 10mm and removed the two planks of wood laminate I have sitting on the table. Mild keystoning at +6 had no perceptible effect on picture quality from 2.0x viewing distance.

I shall limit my comments on picture quality to DVDs only. I do not have HD cable nor do I intend to connect it to a cable set top box. I line out the optical out to my Onkyo receiver. When sending sound to my HT, I turn down the volume on the DV10's internal speakers to zero and have no issues. Be sure to access the SETUP menu on the DV10's DVD player to ensure Audio Out is set to RAW instead of PCM. This means the signal out of the optical link will be raw digital and the receiver will be handling the decoding of the signal. Another annoyance is that the DVD player plays all DVDs with the subtitles enabled by default. So you have to punch the SUBTITLE button on the remote to turn it off. Yes, the lamp does smell but only when I am close to it from the sides. I don't seem to smell it sitting behind the unit as seen from my webpage.

The 854x480 DarkChip2 really does it's job. I did not see any rainbow effects (lucky one not to be affected I guess) even though I tend to exercise critical viewing having photography and filmmaking as an amateur hobby. Perhaps the fast color wheel is making RBEs a thing of the past.

The picture quality from The Fifth Element, Lord of the Rings (1st one), Moulin Rouge, Celtic Woman DVD (shot on video) and Criterion Collection's Bad Timing are breathtakingly 3-dimensional. I mean you could reach out and touch someone with this projector. Men in Black while good, did not rival the picture quality from these other DVDs. This is because the 854x480 chip handles the resolution from a widescreen DVD natively. Another absolutely beautiful viewing experience is watching HERO starring Jet Li, Maggie Cheung and Tony Lau. The images are nothing short of stunning. Lensed by Director of Photography Chris Doyle, a gwai lo resident in Hong Kong, HERO features some of the most poetic images you can see associated with a Chinese kung fu drama. In my opinion, HERO is a far superior movie for many reasons in the genre of aerial kung fu ballet than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers. If you like the genre and the poetry of sacrifice, love, duty and honor, you owe it to yourself to view the widescreen version of HERO (as presented by Quentin Tarantino).

True to its reviews, the picture quality blew me away coming from a DVD source. The built-in deinterlacer worked fine with no perceptible problems. I just cannot imagine an HD projector doing much better displaying a DVD source (now an HD source is an entirely different thing and I did not test the DV10's ability to handle an HD source). I imagine an HD projector running a DVD source would allow a viewer to sit closer than the 2.0x I employ without visible artifacts, but for my needs, the viewing experience is sufficiently immersive. In the future, HD-DVD must simply be incredible on a native 16:9 HD projector.

This projector is really bright. Out of the box, it comes with 6 image presets:

1. Cinema
2. sRGB
3. Vivid
4. ImageAI (auto intensifier)
5. Game
6. User

One review I read said you can adjust all the presets. I found I could only adjust the User setting. The Game preset is very bright and punchy easily leading to fatigue. Ditto Vivid. The most filmic presets are Cinema and sRGB. Although AI Image boasts an effective contrast ratio of 4000:1 or something like that, I did not like the effect on the picture. Currently, I scroll (like a kid in candy shop) between Cinema, sRGB and User (more on the User settings a little later).

The image is so bright at night that I turned the lamp's BRITE MODE to OFF. I didn't need extra brightness in light controlled room at night(three layers: venetian blinds, sheers, full dark curtains deployed (I even stapled dark fabric to the portion of the white ceiling in front of the projector screen to reduce reflections. Plus I figured it would prolong the bulb life. The fan speed drops correspondingly with this selection and makes the unit even more quiet.

There are enough tweaks to adjust the picture to your heart's content. I simply ran PLUGE bars and adjusted to what looked right for me. One minor annoyance is that the individual RGB signal adjustments are buried in the menu item called TRUE VIVID or something like that. Accessing the menu allows you to adjust the individual RGB channels and offsets. I reduce the red from 107 to 105 in my User preset. White Peaking was set to 2 to prevent crushed whites. I set the User SHARPNESS between 16 & 18.

Here's the interesting part.....while I was watching Criterion Collection's release of Bad Timing starring a young Theresa Russell and Art Garfunkel last night, I decided to play with the Degamma function (one line higher than White Peaking) in the menu. Scrolling through the Degamma function yielded gamma changes in the picture similar to changing the gamma of different film stocks. The choices range from a modern tight grained, high contrast film stock to a less contrasty, less saturated, slightly faded look. I ended up choosing Degamma 6 for viewing Bad Timing which was released in 1980. This Degamma choice seemed to suit this older film really well and served to enhance the viewing experience. Although this may turn the stomach of a calibration purist, try scrolling through the Degamma function at the start of a movie to select a picture that suits your taste.

Now for the built in speakers. At first I poohed poohed the idea of using the speakers since I had my home theatre setup. But having lived with the unit for 2 weeks, the convenience of having the built in speakers grew on me. Late at night after putting my 2.5 year old daughter to sleep, I unwind by watching DVDs. Firing up the entire HT stack and then trying to keep volume levels low to avoid waking her up is a difficult task (the media room is directly beneath my daughter's bedroom). Finally, I tried using the built in speakers only with the bundled subwoofer. First, the audio quality is far far better than an audiophile would imagine coming from those small speakers. Second, the subwoofer, while a cheap plastic thing that no self-respecting audiophile would imagine endorsing, actually does a very good job rounding off the bottomm end for late night playing. Third, even though the projector is set back some 11 feet from the screen, the imaging (perhaps psychoacoustic perception?) of the dialog and sound effects seem to emanate from the screen. Even my wife remarked that the sound seemed placed quite correctly on the image 11 feet away. So even though the projector's speakers was quite removed from screen, it was transparent to us as viewers. Those speakers did such a good job for late night viewing that I did not miss my HT running full blown during my viewing time from 11pm to 1:30am. Now of course, you're not gonna watch a dynamic action flick and expect to be blown away with the speakers, but for late night viewing of a drama with talking heads, it more than acquitted itself. I did not miss my Magnepans during last night's movie. I admit that I was wrong in judging the built in speakers as mere pretenders with no real utility. If watching alone and you want it loud, just plug your favorite headphones into the mini-jack which functions as an audio out.

Overall, I can truly say, the DV10 represents a superior value in the marketplace today. Being Canadian, I can only purchase in places like TigerDirect.ca or Futureshop.ca and miss out on the some of the other online retailers in the USA. You will need to spend a lot more money to get a superior FP picture. In the street price range that the DV10 can be gotten for especially with bundles including a screen and usable subwoofer. In my opinion, one should run and not walk to grab a DV10 while it is still for sale. The picture quality for it's price, it's brightness (so you can have outdoor options) for it's price and it's built-in player and speakers allow for interesting deployment. With the subwoofer, it means you can take a reasonable sound with big picture with you to the weekend cabin, the cottage, the summer camp without needing to commit a large (read expensive) display device in that location to enjoy some cinema where you spend your time. The dang thing even comes with a padded carrying bag emblazoned with the word "Movie Time" for that very purpose. You might just want to have a 100' roll up cord extension for maximum flexibility. :)

One review said that the DV10 handle HD very well. I cannot confirm that as I do not have access to HD content. However, if you like console gaming, have a room where you don't want to ceiling mount and deal with long cable runs and the inherent issues they present and like the mobility that the DV10 provides, there really is no direct competition to the DV10. The DV10 is not designed as a universal multi-input display device so it's connectivity options are limited. It can do component-in using a VGA adaptor that is provided but it's really designed for fast, easy, convenient and inexpensive FP viewing.

Although I cannot mention prices due to the posting restrictions here, I could not find anything in Canada for the price of the DV10. In the same price range I was looking at office equipment 800x600 4:3 business projectors.

regarding sound, you are getting no volume problems, hissing or static with your sound setup, your receiver handles the optical in with no problems and you don't need to crank up the volume through your receiver, correct ?

did you consider putting the dv-10 lower to avoid any need to keystone...for example 10" from the floor instead of 22" ?

what is the distance from the floor to the bottom of your screen ?

thanks for the review and i liked your ht pics

Glad to see another happy Movietime owner.

I agree about the speakers... pretty good for what they are. Corner placement of the subwoofer helps noticeably as well.

My grandmother is in the hospital and I took my Movietime to the hospital last weekend and showed an IMAX film on the wall of her room.

I've gotten really hooked on HD over the Movietime. My DirectTV on my 32" CRT was only SD to begin with, and after TiVO installation, the video quality has visibly worsened. I bought a Humax HFA100 HD tuner for <$200 and it's very impressive on the Movietime. I find myself firing up the projector and pulling down the screen almost nightly to watch the Olympics or Lost in HD and 5.1. Why watch a DirecTv and TiVO compressed signal on a 32" CRT when you can watch crisp 480p on a 92" screen?

Very nice (and accurate) review! Unlike lot's of folks here my DV10 does not exhibit the volume/optical issues. The DV10 drives the Toslink Optical port at full power all the time, regardless of where the volume on the DV10 is set. I truly like the DV10 but may not hang on to it. I'm just a big fan of "easy" and flipping the power on my ceiling mounted Sharp and have it be lined up and focused on the pull down screen is nice. The DV10, due to it's portability factor requires some fidgeting to get it "right". OK, it's only 5 minutes but...... The extra cords (power/optical) on the floor aren't too pleasing either. Of course it's built for portability and in that respect it kicks my Sharps butt!

did you consider putting the dv-10 lower to avoid any need to keystone...for example 10" from the floor instead of 22" ?

what is the distance from the floor to the bottom of your screen ?

thanks for the review and i liked your ht pics

Nope, no volume problems so far. Maybe it's the Onkyo receiver's compatibility but I can enjoy audio from the internal, turn them off completely and just listen through the Onkyo's feeding the Maggies.

If you reference the first picture on the top of the screen on my HT web page, you will see why I had to put the DV10 on a 22" table. My room comes with a wall-to-wall counter I did not wish to disassemble. So I could not play the screen any lower than what the counter dictated. If I set projector any lower, the light beam would illuminate the counter and the top half of the centre channel. So this is the minimum I could go. Truth be told, due to the complete darkness of my HT room under viewing circumstances, I do not even need to correct for keystoning since the distortion is not sufficient a distraction for me. I mentioned keystoning in the review because keystone PQ distortion is a factor in some PJs.

As for the distance from the floor to the bottom of the screen, I will have to measure it tonight and let you know. (Currently at work....... :))

Glad to see another happy Movietime owner.
My grandmother is in the hospital and I took my Movietime to the hospital last weekend and showed an IMAX film on the wall of her room.

That's what I mean. The flexibility of the DV10 gives PJ applications that were previously not feasible. Or imagine playing the movie The Notebook to grandma (if she's the sentimental kind).

BTW, I'm jealous of your 92" screen (just kidding!). If you see my HT pics, I'm just about maxed out on the 72" with very little left to gain on either side unless I bring my Maggies to the floor which would change the audio in the room. Plus, the Maggies stand so tall at 48" that they would block the picture if standing on the floor. Unless I flip the room around and buy a bigger screen! In fact, I will go and take some test measurements tonight.

Distance is 33.5" from the floor to the bottom of the screen where the black weighted rod lays.

Great review Puppy.

This unit interests me, I have the H31 now, but in a couple of yrs I may buy this Movietime thing for a backyard setup (if I can buy it for 500 bucks by then).

QUESTION (of vital inpoprtance to me and others probably).

I have DVDr's made by AML-Matrix, Longten, Great Azo, and Optidisc (yep all DVDr made by crap Taiwanese, Hong Kong and China companies. I buy from Meritline at 15-20 cents a pop. (don't ask me any legal questions please - just assume we all are law abiding persons).

Media is notorious in not playing back on many players and/or not recording -etc........

I have to know if the DVD-player in the movitime is a brickhouse and will play anything (like my 20-buck Cyberhome or some namby-pamby players like so many Pioneers and Denons I hear about.

The Movietime is useless if my library will not playback on it.

Gaffo,

Hmmm, I don't know about your specific question on those brands you mentioned. Someone went to Asia and bought some DVDs on the market there which were obviously copies of legal DVDs. My Movietime played them without problem, but the quality of the dubs were so bad that a projected image was unwatchable. I turned it off after the first 3 minutes.

That is not a direct answer to your question but that is the limit of my experience.

Inukshuk,

Don't know if someone else has discovered this already so I apologize if this has been previously posted. The way to set the internal speakers to zero and pass all audio to the receiver is as follows:

1. Using the remote or the projector's built-in buttons, hit the - sign until the on-screen volume bar shows 0. You can also put your ear to the unit to ensure it's quiet.

2. Insert DVD into unit. For some reason the DVD will DEFAULT to the first audio track whether it's 2 channel stereo or Dolby Digital (it's just whatever the first encoded audio stream happens to be. (For example, on the Celtic Women DVD, the first audio track is 2 channel stereo so that's what comes on with the autoplay function. With Fifth Element, it's Dolby Digital so that comes on first).

3. Goto the DVD's main menu that comes up when the movie starts and under audio options, select the audio stream you wish using the DVD cursor and press ENTER. NOTE: Cycling the AUDIO button on the remote doesn't seem to send the preferred signal from the DVD player to my receiver(maybe it's just my receiver but somehow the audio flag identifying the audio format in the data stream doesn't lock doing it this way and the unit wants to default to the first encoded audio track once again). Once you choose the audio stream using the DVD's main menu on playback, the unit will send all the audio at full volume through the optical cable to the receiver even though the internal speaker's volume is set to zero.

Hope this helps those trying to find this function.

I now realize you are correct, the optical out works with the projector volume at zero. Thanks for pointing that out.
One thing I still have a problem with: I cannot get DTS to work. My receiver is supposed to auto-detect DTS/DD. When I set a dvd to DTS, my receiver does not detect it, remaining in DD mode with no sound. The receiver does detect the different streams when playing dvds from my panasonic dvd player. How is DTS working for you guys?

I don't believe this unit decodes (or even passes) the DTS stream. I couldn't get it going on "The Fifth Element" (Superbit) when I was testing it out.

Itsdon and prod,

I have the regular Fifth Element (not Superbit) and when directing the playback menu to play DTS, the DV10 sends the sound to my receiver just fine. My Onkyo receiver correctly identifies it as DTS and displays the correct symbols in decoding it. Again do NOT cycle through the AUDIO button on the remote but make the selection through the playing DVD's options menu.

Ensure the DV10's player audio output is set to RAW and not to PCM by mistake.

Sometimes you also have to specify\define the audio input type in your receiver by defining which digital audio input is assigned to a particular mode. For example, if your receiver has 1 digital coax and 2 optical audio inputs, you need to assign those inputs to the DVD, CD, VIDEO, etc. input selector on the receiver.

What could be happening is that the player is defaulting to the first encoded audio stream which could be Dolby D or if it's stereo 2 channel, then Dolby ProLogic II. That is why you you select DTS on the receiver, it's not seeing the data stream. Again the answer is to select the audio type option in the playing DVD's main menu options.

Newby - 1st Projector! After much lurking and learning from this site, have ordered and received the Optoma Movietime. Should have the screen by the weekend. Have read the book in anticipation, but see no mention of the advertised "Multiple Quick DVD Zoom Presets for 1.85:1, 1.66:1, 2.35:1, 4:3, and 16:9". Is this detected and adjusted automatically? Thanks for the help.

Gaffo,

Forget about playing old DVD-Rs with the MovieTime. I am planning to resell my MovieTime because it pixelates and/or freezes all the time when playing anything recorded in DVD-R, DVD+R, etc. No matter whether they are movies decrypted with any program or analog copies made from TV.

I found out that the only way to solve that problem was to make a fresh new copy of the old recording and even then the unit pixelates occasionally.

Trying to restore the old DVDs with the myriad of products available in the market will not help at all.

I play newly burned DVD-R's all the time on my Movietime with no problems. Some of these are even encoded compressed to fit the content on a single DVD-R. On many, I can see no compression artifacts even at 92".

In my experience, pixelation on the Movietime (and incompatibility with other DVD players) is mainly due to poor burn quality of the DVD. If I try to burn DVD's at 16x (even with 16x rated media and burner), I'll get pixelation. I've started doing my burns with cheap 16x media at 2.4x or 4x and get pixel-free DVD's. Next time I'll spend a few extra bucks on Verbatim or other name-brand media to see if it affords better high-speed performance.

Matt,

Try playing those DVD-R's in a few months, when they have collected some dust and got a couple of thin scratches and tell me if you have no problems playing them with the MovieTime. My experience is that newly burned DVD-R's usually (not always) play fine, but after a while those recordings become virtually unusable with the MovieTime. I have no problems playing them with cheap dvd players, but the Optoma embedded dvd player is extremely sensitive playing old recordings (no matter the brand: I have a collection of over 3,000 DVD-Rs made with all imaginable brands and I have to go through the same tedious process over and over: reburn a fresh DVD-R whenever I want to play it with the MovieTime).

I just tried to connect a Mac Mini to the Movietime via the VGA connector using the same DVI to VGA adapter and cable I use with a Sony monitor and can't get anything on screen. I received my Optoma DV10 on Wednesday. It came with the free D&K 50 watt subwoofer and a mail-in rebate form to receive a free 92' inch Panoview gray screen. Well, here is my take on this unit this far having played with it the last few days. I must say the overall PQ is very nice right out of the box. Even when projected on a beige colored wall. The main reason I purchased this projector was because I really liked the idea of how portable this unit could be due to everything being integrated. However, there are a few things that bother me with the unit. The first problem is when playing a DVD using the integrated DVD player the onboard speakers (even with sub-woofer connected) and the volume at the highest level (15) are mediocre at best. They’re a little better than the audio you’d get from a regular TV set. I was extremely disappointed in how little power/punch the sub-woofer put out. Even with it’s volume cranked to the highest level and the Bass Boost button turned on you could barely hear any LFE’s coming out of it. To my surprise the sub is very cheaply made and the buttons on it are made out of the cheapest plastic known to man. The sub on my PC is a lot better. I don’t see how some places can charge $199 or better for this sub? That's completely insane. However, being it was free I can’t complain too much. It's ok if you’re using it in a small to medium sized quiet room. However, I cannot see using this setup in an outdoor environment. In my opinion, the unit just doesn't produce enough volume to be used effectively outdoors. Maybe if it’s a dead quiet area it would be ok but other than this I don’t see it being a good source for audio outdoors. The second problem I have with this unit is the fact that there are too many things that could malfuction or break. One being the onboard DVD player and the other being the speakers. You now have to worry about these 2 things going south on you. True you don't have the portability factor with a regular projector as you do with this unit. However, the possibilty of these 2 onboard devices going bad cannot be ignored. If any of these 2 things happen to go bad you’ll most likely be out of a projector for a few weeks when considering the time it will take to ship the unit to and from the repair center. I’m still unsure if I’ll be keeping the projector because of these reasons? I still haven’t cut out the UPC code on the box for my free screen because once that is done I can no longer return the unit for a full refund. I like the idea of it being so portable but the above mentioned issues have me wondering what to do. I bought the unit based on all the good reviews I have read but I have not seen anybody that has had the unit long enough to really know how reliable it is. This leaves me to wonder how dependable/durable this unit really is? Is there anyone out there that’s had this unit for more than a year? If so, can you please tell me your experience with it thus far? Also, does anyone have the 92’ inch Panoview gray screen and if so, how is it and how long did it take to ship if you used the mail-in rebate? I’d appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks!

Just got one of these last week and am loving it so far..

Question though.. What type of cleaning/maintenance should I expect to be performing on this machine as the months go by?

I know I'll have to get another bulb someday but what other parts of the projector will I need to service (if any?)

Thanks.

After 266 hours of use, I got a solid red light on all the time. I believe the red light means that the "lamp failed"... should I replace the lamp? It's supposed to last for 2,000 hours (or at least that's what they promise...)

By the same time I found out the red light on, I noticed that the unit became occasionally unresponsive. I solved that (I think) by unpugging it for a while and plugging it back, but I don't know if it's going to happen again...

Any idea?

As posted before, I find this projector very unreliable and "cheap". The image is great, but the embedded dvd player is crappy (skips and freezes frequently), the unit exhales an awful smell of burnt plastic, and sound is very poor even with an additional subwoofer....

I have had a DV10 for about a month, and lovin it. Great picture out of the box, and the sound is good enough for most situations. I bought a 25' optical cable from Monoprice for cheap, and it works great when hooked up to the home system. Took it to work, took it to the inlaws, set it down, turned it on and like magic it was theater time. Try that with an ordinary projector. I too am a little concerned with the built in DVD, but so far it has worked flawlessly. Can't wait to get it set up outside, there's nothing like sitting on the deck with a drink watching a big screen. For the money you can't beat it. Biersy

Landrumt, You're right. It's not worth worrying about something all of the time. With that said I've decided not to worry about the things I mentioned in my prior post and am keeping the projector. The picture quality is too good for me to wanna let it go that easy. I just hope it holds up. I'm using my external DVD player anyway so I'm not really too concerned about the internal DVD player going south on me anymore. I'll only use the internal DVD player when I take the projector on the road. As far as the built in sound goes, I wasn't expecting room filling big theater sound. However, I was expecting it to be a little louder than it is. Like I said in my prior post, it's fine for a small to medium sized quiet room but I still don't think it's sufficient enough for outdoor use. There's just not enough audible power. Outdoors the sound will get lost very quickly and you'd probably be straining to hear the dialogue. I have the Greywolf 92' gray screen and the PQ is awesome. I had some friends over last weekend and I had it hooked up to my 7.1 surround system and they were in awe! They said the picture and sound were better than their local movie theater. Hahahaha! I have to agree, it does look and sound awesome! I'll post again in a few weeks with an update on how the projector is holding up etc. Until then, happy projecting everyone!

What kind of input does the Bose use for Aux? Is it a single 1/8" plug or two RCA connectors, for right and left.If it has an 1/8" plug, you need a cable with an 1/8" stereo plug at both ends. If it has RCA inputs, then you need a cable with an 1/8" stereo plug on one end and two RCA connectors, usually red and white, at the other end. If you look in the manual, it shows how to connect an External Subwoofer/Stereo system. It's the same connection for the subwoofer or external speakers. If you want to use both the subwoofer and external speakers, you need a splitter to connect both at the same time.
As far as the optical connection goes, unless the Bose has an optical input, you can't use this connection. It's meant to connect to a 5.1 channel receiver or computer speakers that have their own Dolby Digital decoder.
I hope this helps, Good Luck

The 1/8" plug is directly related to the output level of the internal speakers. The higher you turn up the internal speakers, the louder any external speakers will be. It would be nice if you could set the output to either follow the internal speakers or have a constant output and be able to turn the onboard speakers off, but I haven't seen any options available. I read a post where someone opened up the machine and disconnected the internal speakers, because it was distracting to have both internal and external speakers on at the same time. Good Luck

Hi All,

I've spent all weekend reading these forums and calculating fL based on screen gain and throw.... basically wasted time, but fun!

I like the idea of the MovieTime DV10 for portability. Will there be too much light on my back porch for it to be viewable? Here are my viewing conditions:

Source - DVD's, mostly kid's stuff and educational material I've recorded from History Channel & whatnot.
Light - not bright sunshine, but it is a screened porch & faces south. Plan to view movies late afternoon through dark.
Throw - 8 to 10 feet (could be closer if necessary to compensate for bright light)

I was trying to decide between the DV10 and Optoma EP719. The specs for the EP719 show the lumens as twice the DV10 --- would that be better for "well-lit" rooms? Of course, I could always add some shades to the porch, which would cut out quite a bit of light.

Thanks so much for your advice. This is a great forum!

"Light - not bright sunshine, but it is a screened porch & faces south. Plan to view movies late afternoon"

Sunshine is the worst thing for projectors. My own experience is that there is a big difference between incandescent light and sunlight. No matter which projector you choose, make sure there is no direct sunlight hitting the screen.

Also, if most of what you want to watch is 4x3 (like the history channel), go with the EP719.

Bad news for my DV10. I finally go a chance to use mine (haven't used it for quite some time because of the toddler) and I got everything set up. I went into another room to get a few things and I heard a dreadful zapping sound. It sounded like a big moth landing on the zapper. When I went in there was a funny smell and no power lights on the unit were working. The surge protector wasn't tripped and nothing else in the room seemed to be affected. Anyone have any experience with Optoma's CS? I hope I can get it fixed or replaced easily. :(

Last night we watched "Star Wars III" on our 2-week old DV10. There is nothing like watching a great "special effects movie" on a screen that is over 7 feet wide! Earlier this month, as we prepared for our 3rd move since Katrina (we're going home! :D ), we decided that we weren't lugging the heavy furniture any more, including the 48" rear projection TV. We love movies and we love BIG screens but knowing that we have at least one more relocation in the next couple of years, we decided to try a front projector. I didn't know anything about LCD vs. DLP, rainbows, or screen door effects until I came to this web site and this thread. You guys/gals were invaluable in helping us make an informed decision and we couldn't be happier. Thanks to all of you!!!

I don't tink DV10 can playback XVID, however it is compatible with + & - DVDR and capable of playing backup. Pls note that the built-in DVD player is region restricted but there is a hackware floating around the internet.

Ready to pull the trigger on a DV10 with the 92" Gray Wolf II screen, but have a few questions.

Bottom of screen will be about 12" off the floor. Will setting the projector on the floor and maybe tilting up the back work ok? Or does the screen have to be higher? Throw distance will be around 8', so not sure I can fill the entire screen. Will that still give an acceptable image? Will it black out the non used portions of the screen?

Yes I'm a rookie and reading/researching like mad to try and get up to speed. TIA for your replies...Mike

Screen may need to be a little higher, you will not have to tilt pj at all.....8' throw you'll get about 80" pic & the DV10 has such a large offset - it's gonna be close. (I think the offset is around 57%) I love this machine....just using painted wall for now/building DIY screen.....using my graywolf for outdoor movies....

I can raise my center channel mount higher to raise the screen maybe another 12" for 24" total off the floor.

Also how will an 80" image look on the GW 92" screen?? Any problems doing that?

OK this is the problem i am having hopefully you can help.

When you add a device to add the remote what choice did you use?

I was thinking i need to enter television under device catagory and TV DVD for device type instead of chosing projector for device type. This way when i add a activity for lets say Watch DVD w/ Optoma the setup would recognize the DV10 with the built in DVD. Then use lean commands after setup to add any that are missing.

Thanks.

TV DVD was the way to go. Just had to use learn missing commands from the original remote (for play, stop, pause, etc.) after adding device was set up. Also had to rename the inputs to D-Sub, Composite, S-Video and DVD then used input next as the command for all of the inputs.

I Just have to figure out now how to turn of the projector being the DV10 requires you to power toggle twice to shutdown. I'm sure i will figure it out then all would be good to go.

If anyone has any advice on doing the above better than this it will be appreciated.

Bought my harmony 676 just a couple of weeks ago and depending on your setup can be quite time consuming setting up the way you like it but the end result is great!!!

I've been trying to get more than a 480p input to work, if i set my HD tuner to anything more than 480p it turns all green and loses signal.
I says in the spec's accepts 480p, 720p, 1080i?
I been using the VGA out of my LG3510 to the VGA of the DV10.

Update......... had to set it to component out and use a component to vga cable i had laying around.

Hi Bud Man, Personally I wouldn't leave the projector plugged in at all times. But that's just my personal opinion. I got my free screen a few months ago and it was in fact a Greywolf II. It took about 4-5 weeks to get the screen. Believe it or not I still have yet to mount it because I had went out and purchased a Greywolf I right after getting my DV10 because I didn't have the patience to wait for the free screen to arrive. Maybe I'll take down my Greywolf I soon and mount the GW II. I'll let you know if I see any difference between the 2 screens. I hope that helped answer your questions?

I just got the DV10 with free Greywolf II and D&K sub. question though...

what's the best way to hook the sub to my a/v reciever? my reciever seems to only have a single rca line-level sub output. could I simply hook an rca splitter and run 2 rcas to the sub? or am I better off attaching it to like... the "out" of the audio on the reciever.

I'm sitting at work looking at these boxes... can't wait to get home tonight and play with it all :-)

CieJe

nm, I read more into it. It's just a 2x mono rca input. so I'll just split my single rca to 2 and that should be fine.

I hooked up the sub at work... actually not too bad for a free 50w sub haha. decent quality and crossover.

Guess I can give my first impressions.

I purchased the DV10 with free 92" Greywolf II and free d&k 50 watt subwoofer from compusa for $999.99 + tax. Pretty awesome deal, and even now it's $899.99 I think (I emailed compusa to try to get a $100 credit, I'm still working on it)

This is my first front projection system, and I must say... I'm extremely impressed. Right out of the box, plugged the unit in, and began the process of lining it up to the (to me) HUGE screen. amazingly it only needed to be about 9' away from the screen, and I put a couple of books underneath it. I fit the screen in horizontally, turned the manual focus, and used the keystone keys on the remote to give a square-edged image all within 5 minutes. I was amazed at how fast it was to align the image to the screen fairly dead on.

First thing we did was pop in Pirates of the Caribbean and WOW. How is it that I've been watching these movies on a 32" HDTV?!? THIS is real movie watching... I don't notice any of the caveats mentioned with rainbows, or screendoor effect or anything. I do see a... "texture" I guess from the glass beads on the greywolf, but it's not distracting at all. First settings I changed were setting it to "game" and then turning off "bright mode" everything looked vibrant and clean to me, so I'll probably leave it at that for now.

After the movie, we decided to play some gamecube. This was just a 480i composite input, and that looked amazing too! We couldn't believe the crispness or the vibrance coming from it. Of course 480p gaming will be much better, and we'll probably hook up the xbox another day and play with those settings since it can output 1080i, 720p, 480p etc.

I was also VERY impressed with the speakers on the dv10! I didn't even hook up the sound system during all this testing, the sound was full, and immersive. I played with the sub independently, and it was far above my expectations for a 50w sub that was free.

The only reference I have for the screen is that we projected onto a yellow/tan wall at first, and that was amazing looking, but onto the Greywolf II whites are blinding and the blacks are nearly pitch black with no pixaltion or anything like that I see on my hdtv even.

So after 4 hours of "testing" I don't think I can ever watch a dvd or play a video game on a regular tv ever again... I can't wait to really get some time on this; get the xbox hooked up, and get some real high quality video pumping through it. Thanks all for the great recommendation on this projector!

so I'm looking at getting a backup bulb for my newly acquired dv10. Anybody have a favorite place to get them? so far I've found 2 for under $350:

http://www.visualapex.com/accessories/accessory_details.asp?chPartNumber=DV10_Lamp&MFR=Optoma&Type=Lamps

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Specifications-of-Optoma-DV10-MovieTime-Projector-Lamp-BLFP200B/sem/rpsm/oid/154293/rpem/ccd/productDetailSpecification.do#tabs

circuit city has free shipping, and they offer a 4 year protection plan for it for $70! does anybody have incite or experience with a CC protection plan? how does it work with a lamp? I read through most of the small print, and I'm under the asumption that even within normal failure they'll replace up to 2 bulbs within that 4 years... so that's 3 bulbs in 4 years for $420? sounds like a good deal to me...

Also, is there anything I can do to help my current bulb stay in top shape? I'm guessing keep the machine dust free with some canned air, and only spray when it's not hot. Would it be advantageos to say... add a fan internally or externally, or even watercool it? haha. I have some extra watercooling equipment sitting around; I could probably rig something up.

ideas? thanks

I do not have a CC service plan for a pj, but I have bought plans for several pieces of equipment. My experience with CC has been hassle-free; my claims were handled quickly and with no fuss. I wish I could say the same about my BB warranty experiences...

As for lamps, my understanding is that the lamp has to fail completely in order to be replaced, not just dim.

So, I got this thing now to replace my dying CRT projector.

I am impressed with light output and screen size in general. I can project to a 10 foot wide wall in my living room. However, some things are annoying about it and I wonder if I can change them.

1) as others have noted, the angle of the projection is so that the projector has to be really low. To project from accross the room, you have to angle it down to not have half the picture on the ceiling.

2) still you angle it down so much that you almost exhaust the keystone setting.

3) anyone sitting in front of the projector is in the way, throwing a shadow. So, you can't actually use the big image size.

To fix this, I consider turning it by 180 degrees upside down and project from the ceiling. The problems with this are

a) the built-in DVD player can't be used any more, because there's no way to rotate the image. But I can still use a computer (which I do anyway to watch the XviD films), the VobSub subtitle program has a convenient feature to turn everything upside down.

I'm waiting for a firmware update, or a firmware hack to change that.

b) how do I securely attach it to the ceiling? How can I easily detach it again from there?

You can't ceiling mount the DV10, there's no inversion. Plus the DVD's on eject will fly around the room. :)

No, the DVDs aren't the issue. Mechanically that's not a problem, it can work upside down. Inversion is the only problem with the builtin DVD player. A firmware upgrade could fix that.

But that DVD player in there is a gimmick anyway, and so is the sound system. In all reality for good quality, you want to use the VGA in anyway and run audio to the surround system. You can then let the PC invert the image. So, ceiling mount is very much an option, and indeed seems to me the only option to get over its flaw with the steep upward throw angle.

I figure I can somehow tie the box to a board which would be screwed to the ceiling, but it takes some time to figure out to look nice. I'm afraid of hooking it on the built-in feet, as they might pop out and then the whole thing should fall. (shudder).

Bud-man
11-05-06, 07:31 AM
Dvd's are snap fit into the centor hole, just like any portable cd device like a walkman, so upside down mounting is no problem for dvd's
I thought in the adjustments there was a full 180 adjustment, i'll have to fire it up and see.
I bought a HD70 just to ceiling mount it, the DV10 is made to just lay on a floor and shoot, i had mine on a lil table 2' off the floor.

Dil Deewana
11-05-06, 09:50 PM
Can you get as big of a screen with HD70? One reason I decided for DV10 was because the throw ratio allowed for real BIG screen. But may be it's not so special in that regard?

if anybody knows how we can force this unit to do a vertical flip... it'd be greatly appreciated. It's true, things played from the computer would flip vertically, but I also have an xbox, and eventually a Wii and I doubt they individually have the ability to flip vertically.

I contacted STARTECH.COM and that item won't do what I want it to...

but I think I might play with mirrors tonight... if I mount it in regular position, with the back up... so that it shoots level with the lens - but like ~1ft from the ceiling and backwards, pointed at a mirror, that will be placed... well not too far so that it's a small mirror. The image will be flipped horizontally, but the projector has the ability to invert horizontally.

We'll see...

Hi all! I just purchased one of these dv10's yesterday through Circuit City's awesome sale. The way everyone is going on and on about this unit, I figured that this was the perfect first projection unit, for just $650. with $150. rebate and screen and subwoofer by mail!!

This brings me to my first question - with the wait for the screen at 10 weeks - maybe longer with the holidays, does anyone have a bargain price temp fix to this problem? I have seen screen material listed on ebay, has anyone had any experience with these?

OK, now for what is probably the stupidest question ever asked - why is velvet used for screen edging and drapery in theaters? No, I'm not kidding!

Alright, what about placement? How does one go about determining where to place the seating? What is a good distance?

Any info would be greatly appreciated! I really have no idea where to start! I do think this sounds like a great unit, with it's portability - great to bring to the school, or outside for movie night!

Thanks so much!

So far this is absolutely fantastic. Got it today from CC for the BF deal

I haven't run it extensively, but initially I'm absolutely impressed.

It's very bright - great contrast. Ran it off a yellow wall (the screen hasn't arrived yet) and didn't notice any difference (lights out). Movies looked as good or better than on my 720p DLP TV. Hooked up the xbox360 set to 720p and the output looked fantastic on Oblivion, which surprised me since it was downconverted.

I'll report back once I've received the screen... I'll also try it out for PC a bit later.

I read a couple reviews online about how the image ended up on the ceiling, but I didn't encounter this... image seemed to be dead on from the lens onto the wall.

I took the plunge on CC BF deal on the DV10 too, I've been taking a long time getting my actual HT finished (a piece at a time over a couple years)... My main projector is a Marquee 8000 CRT & I've also got a Sony 1031q as back up. Couldn't resist the deal on this & I've always envied the ease of set up for DLPs, it's gonna be great to take this thing with us on trips & I'm looking forward to summer movie nights in the front yard. This will also tide us over until the actual HT is set up :D

My only lament with this purchase is that I had to wait in line 3 hours to get it... The CC site stated that it was an in-store only & I thought they'd run out before I got my chance. Turned out I was the first one to buy it (meaning I probably could've walked in at any time) & now you can also order on line for the ad's price  oh well...

This should be fun :)

Well, after sitting in my basement in its box for approx 5-6 months I finally got around to mounting my 92 inch Gray Wolf II screen. Prior to that I was using a Gray Wolf 1 and didn't mount the newer Gray Wolf II until today because of plain ole laziness on my part. I guess being I already had a screen I felt there was no big rush to take it down to mount the Gray Wolf II. However, I’m really glad I did because there is definitely a significant improvement in the overall brightness and picture quality with the Gray Wolf II. I was lucky enough to be one of the few who received a Gray Wolf II for free when I purchased my Optoma Movietime DV10. I didn't think I would notice much of a difference but there is a very noticeable difference. First off, there are no more sparklies on the screen. I noticed a few on my Gray Wolf 1. Secondly, the overall picture is much more crisp and vibrant on the Gray Wolf II and the whites are much whiter and the colors seem to just pop off the screen! I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I love it and am so glad I finally decided to get off my lazy butt and take down the Gray Wolf 1 and put up the Gray Wolf II. I'll probably put the Gray Wolf 1 up for auction on Ebay? Hats off to Optoma/Panoview for making the Gray Wolf II a significant improvement over its predecessor (Gray Wolf 1). My DV10 now shines like it never shined before. I feel like I just upgraded from standard resolution to High Def! I’m one happy pup!

You must have a really bright image because you have to table mount the DV10 or floor mount ;)

I missed my outdoor viewing this summer.

Yeah, the image is really bright and I don't even have "Bright Mode" enabled. I have my DV10 mounted on a coffee table and the picture is superb! Even in ambient lit conditions the picture is still bright and not washed out. When I would turn on the lights with the GrayWolf 1 the picture would get a little washed out but not with the GW II. Man, had I known the difference was going to be this great I would have got off my lazy butt and mounted the GW II months ago. I have not done any outdoor viewing yet but I intend to do so this summer. I'm planning on having a few movie nights and I'm also planning on taking the DV10 with me camping this year to watch a few good horror movies in the woods. Hehe...Eventually I'll probably build my own outdoor screen as well? All I can say is anyone out there who is currently using a GrayWolf 1 go out and get yourself a GrayWolf II. You don't know what your missing!

I have connect my Time warner cable box to the DV10 many times. It works and looks great with 1080i and 720p HD stations via the component cables. Make sure you are using three good quality cables and that they are connected tightly.

Also, my component cables are 25 feet long, so length should not be an issue.

DOH, had the red and green cables reversed
It detects fine now. All I have to do now is decide which resolution to set the cable box to, 720p or 1080i. After a quick look, they both look DAMN good.
Found I can now turn off brite mode and still get a good picture too.

Where are you seeing the the new DV11 is 720p?
From what-all I've read it's still gonna pack 480p.
Saw somewheres a Optoma fella was qouted as saying that it doesn't make sense to build a all-in-one projector with 720p when the dvd player is 480 and not an abundance of HD dvds available.
Not yet, at least.

There are some great improvements though;
the DV11 can be ceiling mounted and picture inverted,
the dvd drive is slot fed, no pop-up lid,
more lumins.

I was just reading the press report on the Optoma site yesterday. Today there's no mention of the 720p. Could hv sworn I read it there yesterday and was surprised about the $999 figuring you get more with the Player and Speaker sound. I'll have to get the scoup next week when the open.

What I see on google is 800X600 which is great for me because I like to use a 4.3 screen. I'd love to see a 1024X768 DV10.

I saw a press release on Optoma's site where they were harelding the release of a 720 projector; HD7something, and in the same paragraph mentions the DV11.
This is where you might of saw it and came to the conclusion that the DV11 is 720.

I believe the DV11 is 4.3 native which some consider to be a degression.

My reading is that it's still gonna rock!

I haven't been home to receive it, but I will be picking it up at UPS this Monday(they have come twice when I was not home). You can check the status of your rebate at

Just wanted to chime in here and say "WOW" I just got my DV10 last week and to say I am loving it is an understatement. :) :) :)

I was doing quite a bit of research and was looking at getting the Mitsu HD1000U, but after much research and soul searching, I realized that flexibility was my main interest in this unit. Even though its not 720p, I weighed the pros and cons and the DV10 won out.

All I can say again is "WOW". I truly am impressed with this unit, right out of the box. Im shooting it at my white wall right now from a distance of about 12 feet and it looks awesome. I'm proud to say that my first feature (after the obligitory bugs bunny cartoon and 3 stooges short) was Roger Cormans "Humanoids from the Deep". I grabbed a bean bag and a blanket along with the wife and sat down to enjoy what was truly close to drive-in experience.

Next up was the Dreamcast that I connect through the VGA input and again I was stunned at the quality of the image. It was so bright and clean that it made me think twice about going back to my Toshiba 56" to play my 360 in 1080i (although that is awesome as well)

Last weekend we took it over to our friends party and ran a composite signal into the back to watch the oscars. While you could see that it was a composite signal, it still held up reasonably well for regular television and had the party guests all content.

This weekend Im going to try out my new superbit version of Coppolas Dracula as well as Pirates of the Caribbean.

I need to sit down and get into the menus and adjustment for the unit, but right now Im just having too much fun with it.

As soon as the weather permits and I get my screen and subwoofer from the Optoma rebate Im going to do an outdoor double feature of The Little Mermaid and Lion King for the kids, and then a double feature of It Came from Outer Space and Creature from the Black Lagoon.

I can honestly say that this has helped renew my interest in DVD watching again, and Im all over revisiting the big screen experience.

Can anyone suggest a good idea for a portable sound system that I can use for outside, that has an optical input and decent sound? I don't want to have to run speakers out there every weekend and I don't have the funds right now for a permanent solution.

Thanks for the tips and insight everyone. I am so happy with my purchase.

Try buying a pair of powered Wharfedale Diamonds which you can line right out using the mini-jack from the DV10. The sound quality is very very good and you only need to plug in the power to the same powerbar that the DV10 is hooked up to. Make sure to turn the volume on the projector to 1 before plugging in the Wharfdales. If you require more attenuation, buy an inline volume resistor for a few bucks from Radioshack.

I can't imagine really needing digital sound when doing oudoor viewing. I'd look at decent computer 2.1 units (like Klipsch). If you really want to spend some money go for the above mentioned Wharfedales, as this is a great company that is little known here in the States. I recently put a Wharfedale center in my surround system and it changed the sound form decent to musically smooth and open. Best audio money I ever spent.

I picked up this system at Circuit City as an open box for $130.

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-Home-Theater-System-HT-DDW700/sem/rpsm/oid/147320/catOid/-12954/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

It has auto-calibration and digitial optical in.

I also got these speaker stands at Walmart

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5019646

This makes it easy for setting up. The wires go up from the bottom of the stand, through the pole at the top. The speaker wires are pretty long and the system sounds great for a small HTIB.

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.

I'll take a look into these.

One more question for those in the know.

I bought an extra bulb, and I heard that I should "cook" it before the warranty runs out on it. So how many hours should I run my original bulb, before I put in the new one to make sure all is well with it?

Is 10-12 hours a good run to make sure the bulb is not defective, or should I do longer.

thanks

Forgive me if this has been answered. I looked all through the site and can't find a definitive.

Is anyone using the Xbox 360 with the DV10 via VGA cables (as opposed to Component) and if so what resolution are you setting the xbox up to 480p?
Hey acampero, I just wanted to chime in. Bought PS3 and set it to output 480P hoping for a great picture, sadly though the picture wasn't what I expected. Colors where muddy, overall dull and hard to distinguish. Played for about one week this way until "divine intervention", well almost. You see I couldn't get over the fact that DVD 480p was so perfect and that component PS3 was so crappy. I in frustration just said screw it, this is a HDTV Compatible projector and I'm going to try forcing 720p and 1080p (For PS3 uncheck 480P and only select 720P).

Wow is the word again. Let optoma do the downscaling and you will get a near HD quality. My friend initially seen the PS3 in 480p and was impressed with the screen size but not wowed by the projector. The other day he seen my Optoma doing HDTV 720P and commented simply "wow... color". Hope this long winded comment helps.

P.S. I would love a calibration but can any one just give me the settings seeing as all the settings have a numerical value. I am trying to understand this but there seems a lot of investment needed for this.

The calibration numbers will vary widely depending upon what screen you're using. Since we use our DV10 on all sorts of screens/walls, I've never calibrated it, unlike our TVs which have been 'calibrated'. For the easiest and cheapest route, just use the THX setup on many DVDs. It does a surprisingly good job.

It was a late night post so it was kind of huried and I didn't even think to consider that. I have the CC BF special from a year ago which got me a free sub and a Greywolf II screen. Love the setup and it was night and day after I put up the screen and hooked the sub.

As for calibrating with a DVD THX setup, I honestly never new they existed. I will dig through my DVD's and look for them to do calibration. You see I play the PS3 more on it now than watch TV or movies and sometimes characters get swallowed in the blacks.

Thank you Jim for quick post and easy route to a solution. If possible though, can you mention any particular DVD's that have this feature. I have pretty mutch most of the popular ones that came out within the past year and a half. Paul.

Going to try the PS3 and 360 this weekend.

Having issues. The projector has been shutting off 15 mins in. After third try it stayed on.

Running in same situations as summer, so it should not be overheating now anymore than before. Could unit be going bad?

My DV10 is now 2 years 2 months old. While in use, I heard a loud grinding noise... and the color from the image went away... inspected the bulb (only like 1000 hours on it) and it seems fine. I noticed some loose debris in the projector and then a piece of multi-colored glass fell out...

Apparently the color wheel has shattered. I emailed Optoma, and I guess I'll see what happens. On the fixya website (the only place online I can find info about this exact problem) people say it's $130 + s/h for the part.

Has anybody experienced this? any pointers on replacement? Do I need to access the service menu to install the new color wheel, and how do I do that if I do...

guitarman
12-28-08, 08:00 PM
Optoma will want $500 to replace the light engine, at least that's what the charge was for the HD56. They don't just change a colorwheel. They say the wheel is part of the light engine and they don't seperate the part and leave a vacant light engine on the shelf. Makes sense, but if you could get a compatable colorwheel you could try it yourself.

If your DV10 isn't under warranty then there's probably not much your going to be able to do being the firmware probably needs to be factory re-installed. Man, when will you people learn your lesson? Why would you be willing to ruin your DV projector just to make it region free? That's insanity. You would think that you guys would have learned from the problems others have had in this thread with trying to make their DV region free? It boggles my mind to see that some of you still went ahead and tried to upgrade your firmware knowing full well that it could mess up your projector. Why not just leave well enough alone? Now your stuck with a very expensive paper weight. Was it worth it? To be honest, I don't feel the slightest bit bad for those this has happened to because it's just flat out stupidity.

Think my color wheel went on mine, has very low hours like under 100, only used several times a year for outdoor parties, month ago we were watching and all a sudden a loud whirring noise like a bad fan, so yesterday was gunna set it up for sunday football in the garage and turned it on, immediatly the noise is there, the picture is real fuzzy.
Pulled the bulb, but didn't see any wheel pieces either.
So it's back to the man cave with the HD70.
Dont want to spend much money on this PJ, Ebay has 1 listing for DV10 color wheel, $133, thats CRAZY!!
