Guys,

It looks like after 2 years, the Swithey FTP server will soon be undergoing some adjustments. We're making some changes at the office and that pipe will need to be used for something other than for downloading demos dvds :( :D

I do not think I'll be forced to take it down but rather drastically reduce the number of users that can download at a single time. Currently, I allow up to 25 but I will probably need to take that down to about 4-5.

I'd love to explore other options (aka. Torrents) but it seems people do not seed and the entire process breaks down.

Anyway -- while we're undergoing the switchover, the FTP site will be DOWN. I expect this to happen sometime over the next few weeks and see the site down for a week or so.

SWITHEY FTP Site is Going Bye-Bye Forever :(

Everyone,

With regret, I will need to take down the FTP permanently due to changes beyond my control. I will keep it up over the weekend but will "Pull the Plug" Monday morning (1/14/08). I am sorry for the short notice.

Kweezr -- if you could please change Post#1 to reflect that people should PM bpratt2 (who has been offering a Mirror FTP out of Australia).

It is possible that your download got interrupted, and it is wanting you to resume. If it is asking if you want to resume or replace, make sure you resume, otherwise you have a useless file.

Does this help?

Doc, where is the FTP program set to download your files to? What folder on your hard drive? Have you looked in there to see if any downloaded already?

Also, just log into the FTP site. On the right side (server files). Highlight the one you want, then click the arrow pointing to the left adn it will start a transfer...

Hmm.. Whose site are you talking about? bpratt2's site is in Australia. If you are in the US, you might have better luck connecting to mine.

If it is mine that you are connecting to, that's a different matter. I'm able to max out my 8 Meg cable modem connection at home. Can you clarify?

I don't know what your problem is if you're connecting to my site, as from all reports I've had back is that it is quite fast.

However, there appear to be a few people that like to have multiple ftp instances running sucking the bandwidth away unnecessarily, and to them I ask them to consider others and just use one instance of your ftp program.

Actually, it appears my uplink was being hacked, and with the sudden influx of traffic he thought that this server was compromised as well and blocked this sudden massive increase in traffic thinking it was part of the attempted hack of their server via my server.

You people need to remember that now that swithey's server is gone, you've created a huge demand on my server that was primarily intended for people in Australia and New Zealand to use, and I really need you to stick with just one ftp session at a time.

I'm trying to give you maximum speeds that I can, but if the greed of a few can not be controlled, I might have to speed limit the transfers. :(

Depends upon how fat your pipe is. I got one recently from squid @ ~525KB/s. They are all ~4GB (or so) in size. 2-3 hours if you can get that d/l speed.

Hey, what would account for differences in sound quality from disc to disc with the same scenes? I'm not talking about DD vs. DTS. On one of the discs (not sure which one), The Haunting sounds SO much better than it does on Disc#21, for example.

from the 2 discs I tried (d2-lfe demo,d21-lfe demo2) , they both sounded way to hot, and video quality was poor, better menus on d2 disc. I didnt like lfe disk 21 due to poor menus, it didnt let me skip to the next clip or anything.

I'm not complaining just informing

I am working on doing an HD-DVD/Blu-ray demo disc! It might take me some time because I am new to editing HD-DVD and Blu-Ray files. However, it is looking more and more promising. The hope is that we could burn these to a standard DVD in either the Blu-ray format or HD-DVD or both.

They have already figured out a way to back up almost all HD-DVDs and about 90% of the Blu-ray’s. That would make for a pretty sweat disc don’t you think?

Please submit requests for tracks that you would like to see on this disc. I might need to go out and buy a few more HD-DVDs or Blu-rays.

What's the mystery Rich? Demo DVD's containing various clips from movies to show off your home theater system without having to put in several different discs and search for "show off" scenes. Since almost the beginning (see post #1) Swithey has hosted them on his ftp server and that has just recently changed, again see post #1. There's ~25 dvd's available for download-try it, you'll like it !

Tree used to mean people who had the DVDs in the beginning. It would spread from 1 person to 2 to 4 and people always knew who they could get em from for mailing. That was before we had the nice FTP sites now for download.

It is possible to use standard DVDs (single layer) and burn Blu-Ray content onto that disc. You only get about 20-30min of video but that should be fine for a demo disc. Personally, I've never done it but I read it was doable.

And thanks mpgxsvcd for attempting the author. It will be cool to have a demo with all HD material!

No -- I disagree vehemently. Lets add some new stuff for blu-ray. What's the point of a re-hash of tired scenes that have been done in multiple standard def demo discs.

Instead, how about:

Live Free, Die Hard : the Jet and truck on the highway scene (DTS Master Audio)

Spider Man 3: Scene with sandman in subway tunnel (dolby true HD)
Scene near end with giant sandman dying and clanging of metal tubes (dolby true HD)

Ratatouille: Scene where rat falls down into kitchen and then runs around to escape detection. (Uncompressed PCM)

I found a bunch of Demos from Panasonic and Samsung etc online... they are 1080i and were easy to convert losslesly. The imagery on these is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the sound is just plain stereo.

They burn into a std DVD (~4.7 GB) with Ulead DVD software, and can be played on any Toshiba HD-DVD player.

Well even with pointing them to this thread. With the way the DMCA is broadly written up, they are simply trying to cover their a$$ in case of any trouble, and I can't say that I blame them. I hate to say it, but don't hold much hope for them seeing it as a "OK" reason for you to continue. Considering that they contacted you about it, that and also what has do be done to make the clips for a demo disk, I'd say your FTP is probably doomed for hosting them.

You know what would be nice if we were able to get a few other people able to host say the last 5 demo's on different servers around the world, as most of the downloads are of the latest demos, rather than the earlier ones. It would spread the load quite significantly, as well as making the latest demos quicker for everyone to download.

I'm sure we could arrange to get the latest demo to all the sites that volunteer before the new demo is announced as released.

Anyone who is interested can either PM me or you to discuss it further.

Can someone please confirm? I played disc #24 and it didn't have any menus. That means, no titles to choose from. I can't even jump from one scene to the next. I can fast forward though.

I believe that's the only one and IIRC it had something to do with the DTS audio.

Edit : Demo #6 and Trailer #5 also don't have menus

I love the LFE demo D2 specifically "The Haunting" because I feel like my house is going to collapse. :D

I'm not able to benefit yet from other demo disc because I only have the mains and the sub.

By the way, I was able to find out which disc I have by looking at the disc via vlc and the HT Demo Disk Summar.doc word document.

kweezr's dts discs have no menus due to audio sync problems using dvd lab pro during the authoring process. As such, only dvd shrink was used to author and menus are not possible on that program.

Do a google search for free/freeware CD/DVD cover art programs, there are a few out there to be had. And they usually automatically take care of the resizing for you. Here is one you can try if you want without looking around, it is called coverxp. And they have both a free and pay version of it available.

Hey folks, here is an update. I have completed reauthoring DTS Demo Disc #6 and there is a menu now. Sorry, took more than 24 hours to get this working. I've verified that all scenes are still in DTS format. There was no reencoding done. Everything was demuxing and remuxing. I've also attached a screen capture of the menu.

Where can I upload the image?

I will be working on disc #24 soon.

A couple of things I do have a PAL version of the commercial DTS9 disc if you get stuck, not easy to send as I am in the UK.

I have also found another disc in my collection called trailer disc 1 which contains HD trailers loaded on to a DVD and converted (I assume) to SD. I am pretty sure I downloaded this from Swithey but can't find it on the list - does any one recognise the description or the menu screen - attached.

I never considered the DTS #9 as being illegal as they were only given out free of charge at the CES shows in 2006. Messages above here also talk about the same subject, without any comments, therefore I thought it would be ok.

No, snippets are different and are considered "fair use" under copyright laws (not to mention the mods would have deleted this thread a long time ago ). As you point out, they are like trailers and don't infringe upon the complete product ( in fact I uploaded #25 Guyplex to Swithey's site last August). If you were talking about downloading the whole movie, then a completely different scenario. In any case the OP was discussing warez, via torrent. I'm not a mod, but just wanted to point out the "subject matter" before it continued into a real warez discussion and got deleted by a mod. If somone really wants the info, then a PM would be the discreet way to go. Just my $.02

Sorry, it was right below your post so I assumed you would know it's yours. Yea, I know when you assume...

It's up to 261 KB/s now so it's just fine (about as fast as I can ever get a ftp transfer w/my dsl -rated 3mb down) Thanks squidboy.

Edit : speed test works fast for me too @ 2.4mb down

It was probably slowed temporarily when I was copying the ISOs around (I like to make sure I have a backup copy in a separate directory). Glad to hear that it is working fine now.

Sorry, I didn't check the forums this weekend.

The .img renamed to .iso didn't work for me. I used MagicISO to convert from .img to .iso and that worked.

I've got both versions up now. The renamed is called D6v2-DTS-Demo.iso and the converted is called D6v2-DTS-Demo-converted.iso.

Let me know which works best for everyone.

I uploaded a real .iso to bpratt2 just the other day. Is it on your server now?

bpratt2
02-11-08, 07:01 PM
Again, please clarify when you mention "the server". Is it mine or bpratt2's?

What people have to remember is that my server is here in Australia, and not in North America, so those in North America might find it a bit laggy or slow due to the extra hops involved.

Also, the initial reason why I set it up was to give those in Australia and New Zealand a quicker option (as those outside Australia can see when they grab it from my site it isn't all that fast for them).

What's also slowed things down quite a bit is that we're getting a whole lot more people using it now that swithey has had to close his site down.

As a reminder, I hope to see at some stage someone from Europe and another site or two from North America effectively 'mirror' these sites, as not only will it take load away from my site and squidboy's sites, but will make it a whole lot faster for everyone else to download.

One of the benefits of becoming a 'mirror' site is that you will get the new demo dvd's BEFORE they will be announced in here. :)

If you might be interested, please PM me and squidboy.

Yes. It's different. I ripped it again. Shaggy already downloaded it and it was successful. Like what bpratt2 and I have said earlier, renaming of .img to .iso also works. Don't know why it didn't work for you.

You can just delete the first .img file I sent to you. Then I can re-upload the .new iso file. Please let me know if you want me to upload the file to you or you download the iso file from bpratt2. My link is slow though.

Thanks.

I now have the same D6v2 disc that bpratt2 has up on his site.

Also, I didn't see it mentioned, but we both have a new trailer disc up, called T8. It has most of the DD/DTS/THX trailers. Check it out and let us know if it works.

I would not consider the disk you have labeled as T8. The normal naming convention has the T discs as movie trailers and not the THX/DD/DTS trailers. This also has some other useful stuff on it. The disc is named Home Cinema's Best Demo DVD and it is pretty good - WMV and Subwoofer Demo sections are not on any other disc here. And no I did not make it or upload it. I have just made it my job to keep the word document up to date and make sure the images posted work and such.

I think we picked T8 since it was similar to T5. True, it is not only trailers, but it doesn't have "clips" either (as far as I know, I haven't even had a chance to check it out yet).

It would be great to get an updated word doc with T8 (or whatever the consensus is for the name) and D26 information.

I successfully downloaded several iso files and burned them with imgburn with ease. Nice free ware.

The demos are great, thanks to everyone who is authoring them.

I found another DTS demo iso file that is about 6GB. Too big for a single layer DVD. My drive can burn DL disks but I've never done it before. Does anyone have any advice on +R or -R DL disks? And if I just give the burner software a 6GB file is it smart enough to split it and burn it to two layers? Or is that invisible to me?

Well after 4 days and 6 hours downloading the DTS #9 demo (the one you see in big box stores) using bit torrent, I burned it to a +R DL disc using imgburn and it worked. The iso image is over 6GB... kind of a pain... but the quality is pretty good. But I think I'll stick to the demo's on the ftp site. Maybe at some point I'll figure out how to author them myself and add to the collection.

Can anyone comment on the general tone of the scenes on disc 17. I am thinking of leaving a demo disc running when the realtor does showings, would need to be basically G rated in my opinion. I was planning an aquarium from Nemo, but my wife asked if there were alternatives that my include the audio side as well.

I guess I wasn't sure how violent some of the titles would be. You don't want to turn buyers off. I saw "Earth destroyed" and possibly the clone wars as possibly more PG than G. I guess if they are in the begining, it would be easy to set it up past those segments. Do you know the total runtime?

About 1.5hrs. In fairness, the clips you're wondering about are fairly benign in nature. The earth get's death starred in AE and the SW clips is more some space warfare but I suppose you can skip that, although that clip would probably appeal to the young boys:)

V...I downloaded the "converted" iso and it played fine on my PC (Power DVD).
However, when I got around to burning it to disc today, it would not load in any of my 3 SA's (2 BD and one SD player).

Plextor XL showed the disc to be error free, so it was a good burn (8X BTW)
I then loaded the disc in PGCedit and saw a menu error message re no sub pic in the menu domain, screen shot below.

Edit: I clicked "yes" to fix (had to extract the iso files ,to load into pgcedit, in order to make the change), saved the dvd changes and reburned. The new copy now plays fine

The DTS Demo #9v2 on the ftp site is one made by victor-eyd and I think he named it "v2" so as not to confuse it with the DTS demo disc distributed to stores. Here is the info on this disc..

If Squidboy wants I'll upload it to the ftp site but I can understand if he doesn't want to get into that gray area. Even though this DVD is not for retail sale it might be too close for comfort. Plus it is >6GB and requires DL discs.

I'm a bit torrent novice, in fact that is the first file I ever got that way and probably the last. There are not many seeds running so it took days to get.

Hey, Victor, sounds like an idea for your next DVD. Create a looping series of clips to leave running for a realtor. Keep the clips very short and have only a few since buyers probably won't stand there and watch an hour of clips. No menu required; just hit play. Include something for Dad, something for Mom, and something for the kids.

Keep it small to make a small download.

True, but the clips are too long considering that a buyer might view that room for no more than 5 minutes.

One that I've considered doing for a pre-show was a collage of battle scenes from different movies put together as if it was one movie. Imagine robots from I,Robot and armies from Lord of the Rings attacking the Alamo and Billy Bob Thornton (from the Alamo movie) saying "We're gonna need more men.....we're gonna need a lot more men." The clips would be pretty easy to assemble, but the sound track would be tricky. :D

Hi shadowcaster,

The filesize of D6v2-DTS-Demo.iso from bpratt2 is 3,362,689,024 bytes. The .iso file I have is the same size as shown by ls -l. Again, this is in bytes. What is the filesize after you have completely downloaded in bytes?

Try using another burner like DVD Decrypter or Nero and max speed of 8x.

Another way to nail this down is by verifying the checksum.
Please download this tool (http://restricted.dyndns.org/md5sums.exe) for Windows. http://restricted.dyndns.org/md5sums.exe

I've tried this tool and it matches the checksum result using tool from my unix box

It's very simple to use. Command is bold and italics. Just type

C:\temp>md5sums dts-demo-6-v2.iso

It took like 5 mins to complete. Might be faster on your machine since I have a slow machine.

In my fedora, I just typed

[root@localhost video]# md5sum dts-demo-6-v2.iso

Post the result and I will compare it to what I have.

EDIT: I have also checked bpratt2's and squidboy's copy and the filesize is the same. So yeah, please execute the md5sums above. I really would like to know the checksum result. If it's the same as mine, then your burner might be causing the problem.

They look fantastic guys plus they seem to have a wide range of tastes and options.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I am doing wrong or why I can't seem to click on that first link???

I'm confused reading the last few pages of this thread.

Are there recently completed new demo discs now available from the links on the first page?

Or is this just the same stuff that has been around for a few months -- but on the new ftp sites?

If there is new stuff -- what is it?

If by the "first link" you mean the yellow-large-font link that takes you to the blaze web site, I believe that no longer works. Your best bet is waiting for squidboy to get back to you.

Sorry, haven't checked PMs for a couple of days. Everyone who requested access should have a PM from me.

And like teknoguy said, the link in the first post doesn't work anymore.

The summary doc can be found on my site at http://www.funkysquid.net/files/av/dvd_summaries/HT%20Demo%20Disc%20Summary.doc

There is one new disc that is full of THX/DD/DTS trailers, along with some other clips. It's called T8.

There is also an updated version of D6 that now has menus, called D6v2.

Otherwise, all the same old stuff.

I dont' see T8 on the summary sheet. What exactly is on it?

Are there any new THX/DD/DTS trailers? Or is it stuff that's on the other discs?

Had a screen shot of the menu :Here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13013151&postcount=2613)

He says "finally getting somewhere" and "who gets it first?"

Sorry, on vacation in Boracay.

Will get back to it and finish it off when I return. Thanks for asking...

PS. Why am I on this forum when I should be on vacation?...

Victor

Hi there,

A little late to the thread. I am in desperate need of these demo disks but I'm unable to download them due to limited bandwidth. I may need several different disks. Please PM me for further information.

Can someone send me the ftp login info? I tried contacting squidboy but didnt get a response. Why is it only one person is hosting these and they are not mirrored elsewhere or on a torrent tracker? I'll offer up my server to put them on...
Thanks guys!

It's not right for anyone else but the owner of the FTP site to give you access for a login/PW protected FTP site. Have patience, give him a few days to respond.

I think I'm finally caught up with responding to PMs with FTP info. I had a ton of requests this week, so if you didn't get a response from me, please PM me again, because you probably slipped through the cracks.

Thanks.

And I won't be around to answer PM's for around a week or so whilst I'm down at the Australian Grand Prix.

OK, now I'm jealous!...;)

Yep, my 22nd Australian Grand Prix as a trackside official. :D

Mind you it's going to be 37 on Friday and 38 on both Saturday and Sunday, and for our American non-metric friends, that's around the 100 degrees F mark.

Do you ever do any work at the MotoGP races also? I'm a former motorcycle roadracer myself. I have even raced bikes at Daytona Int Speedway 3 times back in the later part of the 80's. And although I have always followed most all type car racing as well motorcycles, I still favor the bikes somewhat over the cars.
