DavidMelbourne 09-08-07, 09:24 PM @David I really wish I knew the answer to this one.. I really do rarely have any problems playing xvid avi's on My 35.. If you would like to upload a small sample of one of your problem Avi's to www.rapidshare.com and pm me with the link , I will gladly take a look for you... Teddy
Hey Teddy,
I found the answer (for my setup anyway)... I can watch VOBs but not if they are in folder VIDEO_TS and surrounded by *.BUP & *.IFO... now for any AVIs that wont play I can convert to DVD (miniDVD to save space) and rename *.VOB to play on my MG-35...
By the way I installed MG-35 1.4.9.3 Alpha 1 Developer (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods/) and it works fine...
dave
TheKrell 09-09-07, 04:12 PM I can watch VOBs but not if they are in folder VIDEO_TS and surrounded by *.BUP & *.IFO... That's just crazy. The only thing even remotely like this that I have seen is my own iso file creation. If I downloaded or otherwise made an iso on my system boot disk as administrator, it was created without the file security checkbox checked which says "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object." As a consequence, network file playback was prevented from my mg-35. If I copied the stupid thing over to another disk or the mg-35 internal hdd, it played fine. Checking the checkbox fixes that problem a whole lot faster.
My wag is that you've got some sort of folder or individual media file security problem.

I have the same problem if I copy VIDEO_TS to the Mediagate! I have played with permissions quite a bit especially since the guest account didnt work and I had to create a user called media (password gate) to get it to work... I always propagate permissions down the line but the amazing thing I found is that if I browsed my pc from the mediagate it would play most files but not one or two... Then if I copied those one or two files to the mediagate they would play??? Any other files that wont play I convert to VOB or MPG to play on the Mediagate so I am now at the stage where I can watch what I want on the Mediagate... The way I look at it now is "you get what you pay for" - Sometime in the future I may buy another Mediagate if the technology improves and they provide a 1gig network card...
I have no such problems (DVD folder playback) on mine, using stock 1.4.9. I don't use the newer, privately produced, firmware.
I can happily report that straight DVD copies work fine (ie NOT *.iso's - which I haven't tried). Using Shrink 3.2. And they also stream very well over to my PC so using PowerDVD on the PC is just a matter of changing the file location from a DVD drive to a "local" folder (I actively map the NDAS driven connection to Drive I in my case, but other drive letters will work okay). Of course, I have original DVDs, which are now going dusty in a cupboard somewhere.
However, can you have multiple MG35s on a network and if so, can they see each others contents, as if each one was another PC with shared directories?
I don't have several MG-35/clones, just an inquisitive desire to know the answer.
teddystacker 09-09-07, 10:42 PM Hi,
I guess the answer to this one is really Yes and NO..
Another MG-35 cannot "see" another on a netwok if they are both in "VIDEO" mode ie as a player...
But...
IF one is in "VIDEO" mode and the other is in "USB" MODE ie connected to a PC and "shared" over the network, the "VIDEO" mode MG will be able to see and play from the "USB" MG - I have done this myself..
Regards,
Teddy

I've gone the ISO way with RipIt4Me to make it easier on those less technically inclined in my family to find and play the movies. Worked great. I tried shrinking them, but noticed too much of a quality drop (for my taste). It was sort of liking watching the movie on VHS vs DVD. I've got a full 250GB HDD in my MG-35. Time to upgrade to 500GB!

Ahh, well the answer to that is to title the subdirectory for each DVD properly and undestandably, and ask them to play the folder! It's a shame you can't change the icons for folders, an appropriate icon for the directory containing a DVD would make it easier to understand, I suppose. Maybe that's an idea that could be developed easily.
Using DVD Shrink doesn't necessarily mean that the results are actually compressed, if that's what you want.
Teddystacker - I'm a bit confused by your terms "video" and "usb" modes.
Do you mean "networked" and "usb" by any chance? My understanding is that in USB mode the device can still be attached to a TV, which I think is what you would/should term "video" mode.
And yes, I can see exactly how attaching to separate PCs for each MG-35 via USB would work. I guess you are trying to say that, unlike PCs, the MG-35s have no NDAS client, so cannot "see" other MG-35s/clones?
One wonders if it wouldn't have been easier to avoid NDAS in the first instance - the development of which must be more expensive than using standard TCP/IP networking with "windows" compatible shares!
So to recap, I would like to see two things changed/developed:
MP3's sorted into track numbers (without having to rename every track on an album).
A more descriptive icon for "dvd" folders.
Unfortunately, I'm a network administrator (specialising in Novell), and not a machine code coder or programmer.
MMMM - I can't find a "subscribe to this thread" link on this forum, so I can keep an eye on it via email. Am I missing something?
jkurlanski 09-10-07, 11:20 AM Thread Tools up at the top?
jkurlanski 09-10-07, 11:23 AM Oh..and the directories were named, but I didn't know you could "play" the folder! I always went into the directory, and then they got confused about which file to play. One File makes that a little easier! And its about the same space and works well. Too late now. I've ripped all my DVD's about 5 times now and I'm about done with that. :)
Thanks, found the thread tools, I'm going blind, I think.
Shame, but maybe in future, to improve quality you can consider playing the folder.
TheKrell 09-10-07, 12:02 PM My understanding is that in USB mode the device can still be attached to a TV, which I think is what you would/should term "video" mode. Yes, you can still attach it to your TV, but you wont' be able to play anything! We believe plugging the USB port into a powered host A jack has the effect of holding the EM8511 in reset. This is probably to make it impossible to corrupt your disk by writing to it via two different computers (one USB host and one NDAS host).
I guess you are trying to say that, unlike PCs, the MG-35s have no NDAS client, so cannot "see" other MG-35s/clones? That's right. I haven't tried this, but I believe you could also share your NDAS drive via a PC, and get around that limitation.
One wonders if it wouldn't have been easier to avoid NDAS in the first instance - the development of which must be more expensive than using standard TCP/IP networking with "windows" compatible shares! OK, you get more speculation. If the MG-35 were to serve a disk for r/w via a Samba share, then it would have to know how to handle both reads and writes to the disk itself. When the MG-35 first came on the market, versions of uClinux that could write to NTFS disks didn't exist. The NDAS software finesses this by sharing the disk volume over the network, so it's your PC that handles the file system, and not the MG-35. uClinux does not write to NTFS internal disks (though it can be pressed into service using FAT32 disks).

Therefore do you need 1 PC per NDAS host if they are to talk to each other over the network? Although, I wonder - if you have at least 1 PC and then gave each NDAS server (MG-35) a drive letter and shared it, you could then use the OSs file system to enable them to read/write between the several (now) shared drives?
It would be interesting to find out, but I don't have sufficient MG-35s to try it.

That is my guess, yes. I too lack sufficient NDAS devices to test it out. We could try sharing the single NDAS drive and see if we can access it from elsewhere...
I am, however, skeptical that the MG-35 could serve and play two different files at the same time, without stuttering. I have no problem playing less challenging files such as those off the satellite that only consume about 4Mbps. But I can't play a DVD rip while pushing new files out to the MG-35. I think this worked better before, with earlier versions of the firmware.
Totally agree with your assessment - it would be pushing the MG-35s beyond their abilities, whilst being theoretically possible, the theory doesn't take anything else into consideration.
madeinmsia 09-15-07, 03:15 PM i just installed windows vista on my pc and i tried again to connect to the mg35 hard disk. this time it recognized it and i selected to "import foreign disk".
i was so glad that i can finally copy and move files from my computer to the mg35 via usb.
but then when i connected the unit to the tv n tried to play the movie files, it said there are no files. Please select a different media. i just don't understand why becoz there are files in there for sure, avis, jpgs, etc.
any idea?

Welcome to the MG-35 Thread mate..
Will do my best to help you debug this one..
Do you have any content on your MG's hard disk that you can play? - The reason I ask is that often when your issues arises it usually means that the jumper on the Hard disk in the MG is not set correctly and although the PC can "see" the content the MG itself cannot - The jumper MUST be set to MASTER or SINGLE.
Also the hard disk within the MG must be formatted in the following way:-
NTFS , single partition - NON-active
File compression must be set to OFF (this last item has caused many many problems in the past,as your MG will not be able to read hard discs that have been formatted with file compression turned on..
Regards
Teddy

@ Teddystacker, I was under the impression that if you've connected via USB to your PC, you must disconnect it before the mediabox side (ie Video/Audio playback) are allowed.
@ madeinmsia - try unplugging the USB cable from the PC. Can you now do everything you want in terms of file searching & playback? It can't hurt to try it, anyway. You may need to reset the MG-35.
Let us know - because I was under the impression that is what you must do.
I use NDAS myself, so that problem doesn't arise. Not sure if NDAS client is Vista compatible though.

teddystacker 09-15-07, 07:38 PM Yes you are correct ,but you must disconnect USB before the MG will even boot in "Video player mode" , so therefore, I did not mention this... the fact that he says he "cannot see" the files , indicates to me he has booted the MG ,but cannot see the files in the MG's file browser , hence my questions to him...

madeinmsia 09-15-07, 11:42 PM ok.... i got it to work this way. i connected the mg35 to another laptop running windows xp pro n then imported it as a foreign disk. like the old problem, i couldn't transfer files to the mg35 from that laptop. however after i disconnected it from the laptop n connect it to tv, i could see the files!!
so ... if i use my xp pro laptop, i cannot transfer files to the mg35 but i can view the files on the mg35 when connected to the tv.
but if i use my vista laptop, i can transfer files to the mg35, but when i try to view it on tv, it doesn't see any files.
and yes, i don't connect the tv and the laptop at the same time to the mg35 unit.
i guess it's a dilemma... either one or the other.... not both ways!
anyways, i'm going to try reformat it like what teddy said. but how do i for mat it to "NTFS , single partition - NON-active"? in disk management on the xp pro?
gandelr 09-16-07, 10:06 AM Hy,
I buy a M-35, I upgrade with 1.4.9 firmware, I insert a 120Gb hd Segate and format NTFS.
I have view that with the all files video, random during the film, there is a diminution of fps
(for example in the film of turtle ninja in the initial titles or in the fast scenes )
I have test the same video with a another player (player with 2.5 HD and FAT32)
and I have not had any problem or decelerations.
Can someone help me?
Sorry for My English :)
teddystacker 09-16-07, 10:37 AM Yes, all the options are available in the disc management area of XP.
Did you also check the jumper on the hard disc? , it must be set to MASTER or SINGLE..
I do think this is a hard disc related problem some how , as when you cannot to a XP PC , normally you should never get that "Import from foreign disk" message..

Teddy

madeinmsia 09-16-07, 09:54 PM hi. i've reformatted it as suggested and put it to master. now when i connect by USB to my laptop, it doesn't recognize it as a hard disk, but a USB mass storage. is this right? the problem now is there is something wrong with the driver or something. so it doesn't show up in My Computer.
teddystacker 09-17-07, 12:11 AM Yes, mass storage is correct , you are almost there now..
Now you need to go to Device manager in XP, go to the "universal Serial Bus" controllers and delete all the entrys , then reboot , then plug in your MG , once XP has rebooted and has Re-installed all the usb controllers - this should fix you problem..

Teddy

madeinmsia 09-17-07, 03:40 PM it didn't work. i uninstalled all the usb driver n when restarted, all started to reinstall except for one which said unrecognized device.
when i check in device driver, under universal bus controller, one says "unknown device". this is different from before where it said there was something wrong with the mass usb storage.
i think if i can install the correct driver for the mg35, it might work. where can i find this? can someone email me a copy of the driver?
teddystacker 09-17-07, 07:55 PM There is NO driver for the MG-35,XP auto detects it..
Suggest you Try connecting the MG to another XP computer to see what happens - if all is ok then its time to reformat the laptop..

madeinmsia 09-17-07, 10:08 PM teddy... it's the same on another pc. it still cant detect the mg35. could there be something wrong with the unit? needs to be "flashed" ???? hope not, it's new.
i know if i put the hard disk on cable select, it would probably work. however it would connect to the laptop as an external hard drive, rather than a usb mass storage. this what i did last time but there was problem viewing the files on the tv then.
i'm at wits end with this.
teddystacker 09-18-07, 11:33 AM Ok,
First , "Flashing" new firmware will have no effect on this,as firmware does NOT control the MG35's USB operation.
So far we have ruled out that the Laptop is the problem , so now we have only two options left..
1)The USB cable that connects the MG to the PC.
2)The hard disk - did you try the other jumper settinngs (these is asometimes a jumper on a hard disk that limits capicity) , and even a third option on the main jumper.
So many variables here , its just a process of ruling each one out - I very much doubt that your MG is faulty , I realise that not alot of use atm , but at least u may make you feel a little better..

rocksarkar 09-20-07, 11:56 AM Hello all,
Firstof all thanks for keeping up good work on putting ur issues and solutions on this forums.
I have recently purchased MG-35 and ran into problems with upgrading to 300gb harddrive and finally was i was able to resolve it.
Now i would like to rip my dvds to the format mg-35 can read. Can you guys please suggest what sofware to use. I want to have them in avi or xvid format and want to play this in the car and small tvs....I was thinking of 1.5 to 2 gb files instead of having 4.5 dvd-r format...
Thanks in advance.
CASEYATBT 09-20-07, 12:39 PM I've using FairUse Wizard for years and have been very satisfied. I use the paid version, but they have a free version available. Try the free version to see if it is what you are looking for.

teddystacker 09-20-07, 12:43 PM @rocksarkar
Easy one this...
I have tried many different programs over the last year or so.. but now use this one all the time , as its real easy to use and gives good results..
I use "Fairuse Wizard" myself to convert to Xvid , and gives VERY nice results that are always in Sync..
http://www.fairusewizard.com/
just use the dafault settings, make each part no larger than 750mb.If a movie is over 90 mins in length , I make 2 x 750mb parts and under that just a single 750mb avi..
Dont forget , if you are trying to convert any of the new highly protected dvds you wil need something like Slysoft's "Anydvd" running in the tray to strip out the protection..
Please feel free to ask any oter questions and dont forget to visit my dedicated MG-35 Yahoo group..

I use WinAVI.Video.Converter.7.7. I also use ver 8 which allows you to better manage the size of the VOB or MPG... :D
Dear forum,
Firts thanks for providing such good insight and answers on the MG.
I have the freecomm mg for almost 1 year and it has worked fine. Generally I use the local play option having the files on the local hard drive inside the mg.
Sometimes I have played through the network and It has also worked, having to create the "Media" player user and give him the correspong rights.
The other day I installed the NDAS software emulation program form freecom to copy files through the network, and most of the files donīt (avi, ifo) donīt play through the network saying that it is unable to recognize the format. The weird thing is that if i copy the files locally to the MG HD they play fine.
Does anybody know why this happens? I am planning on buying a NAS network drive for more storage but if I am not able to play through the network it wouldnīt make any sense.
Thanks in Advance.
maile76 09-29-07, 10:37 AM Hi,
I wanna buy a MG-35 (Freecom) but I need some information:
I want to connect the MG-35 via USB to my Satellitereceiver for TV-Recordings and to my network and my TV at the same time.
Is it possible to play movies on the MG-35 by switching off the Satellitereceiver or do i have to unplug the USB-Cable?
Thank You

teddystacker 09-29-07, 11:33 AM @maile76
Welcome to the Thread..
With the MG-35, you cannot have it connected to BOTH USB and the TV **AT THE SAME TIME**..
It works like this...
When you plug in the USB cable , it automatically switches the 35 into USB mode , ie the MG then acts like a "standard external USB drive" that you connect to your PC , in this mode you can only see/access the content of the 35's hard disc from a PC/MAC,via the USB cable.
When you unplug the USB cable from the 35 , the unit switches off , until you boot it into "video player mode" with the power switch on the unit or remote control..
Please feel free to ask any other questions or visit my dedicated MG-35 Yahoo group located here..

maile76 09-29-07, 01:40 PM thanks teddystacker,
is it possible for the MG-350 to have both, USB and LAN, connected at the same time, and use it as mediaplayer?

As it says, my recently made avi files are starting in the middle of the movie when viewed using my MG-35(s). Using any other player the same file always starts at the beginning. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
USB mode & LAN mode are mutually exclusive - so - my advice is -
If you want to access the hard drive while still connected and (theoretically) useable on the TV you need to install the ndas client software on your PC and connect the MG-35 clone to your LAN.
I think it might be a bit silly to connect both LAN and USB at the same time. I don't think it is possible - the USB mode probably turns of the LAN too. I haven't tried it, but there's no reason why you can't experiment and see what happens.
USB and TV Player mode are mutually exclusive too, and this is a proven fact. However, USB mode is a lot lot faster than LAN (which can be used in TV player mode).
But there are problems. LAN mode seems to use a lot of resources, so playing a video or MP3 will be somewhat jerky while both LAN and Video modes access the hard drive.
NDAS is an awful protocol, however, and that is why it's a lot slower than standard TCP/IP. NDAS aware devices use a software based protocol, as opposed to TCP/IP - which is built into standard network cards.
LAN mode can be connected all the time, of course, so no cable swopping required. The jerkiness I alude to above is only noticeable while trying to actually move files.
Strangely, LAN mode is actually able to access shared files on your PC network at full speed, though - and so you can store files on your PC - a hard disk inside the MG-35 is not actually required! Accessing files stored on your PC uses proper TCP/IP - Who knows why the thing requires TWO separate protocols to actually access the MG-35 from the PC? I think it's a bit ludicrous - but there's the rub.
Edit: just to clarify:
To access the MG-35 from your PC, NDAS client software needs to be installed on all the PCs in your network that might want to send files to the MG-35. There is an NDAS switch in the menu of the MG-35 somewhere, which turns the protocol on/off - plug it into your TV to see the menu.
For the MG-35 to retrieve files from your PCs, simply move those files to a windows publicly (ie no user account/password block) shared folder on your PCs. No other setup is required. NDAS is not required. You can also use make files/directories accessible on any LINUX PCs you might have.
maile76 09-29-07, 02:25 PM thanks,
i dont need them at the same time, but when it stands in my tv rack, connected to my satellitereceiver,as a ext. hdd for recordings, i dont want to unplug the usb-cable to be able to watch a movie.
as i read in the mg-350 info thread, for the mg-350 its possible to have both connected at the same time, due to the manual. but i need to know, if video- mp3-playback is also possible, which i really hope..
so i'll ask it in the other thread...
edit:
there i read, that if theres no power on the usb, it works fine, so i think its almost the same...

Hello,
Just a little insight to my problem:
in the mg wiki it says that there is the possibility that some files wont play over network but they do play locally (beacuse of network or server).
I have normal user home set (dsl ethernet modem, and HP nc8430 notebook with 2 gigs of RAM).
I have been able to play most divx compressed video over the network, but my problem comes to MPEG1 (CVCD) and some iso playback over the network. (all of these play fine locally). Some MPEG1 do play.

Dear forum,
Firts thanks for providing such good insight and answers on the MG.

I see that a new Mediagate forum just appeared in the dartworth post above yours... I don't remember seeing any announcement about it. Maybe dartworth could tell us who's behind it. :)

Yes Sorry Krell, I should have made this more clear to avoid confusion..
I really cannot understand why they would want todo this after all this time , I mean its not exactly going to help sales by giving less support is it?? , but maybe they cannot see that fact?, or maybe there are other factors involved here? - either way it just makes them look negative in the eyes of anyone thinking about buying one of their units...

I'm using a 500gb IDE HDD in the MG35 without any problem. Don't know if there is a limit...
teddystacker 10-02-07, 10:28 PM 750gb Seagate drives have been tested on the 35.

where can i buy one of these?
never mind--found it here (http://coolpc.com/Mediagate-MG35/M/B000NW922C.htm)If you're in the UK, then it might not be the best idea to buy from the site you link to. You will find that you need to add VAT and customs duty on top of the $ price - which you pay directly to Customs COD.
(I looked into doing the same for a Canon D30 - although a great $ price, by the time import duty and VAT was added it was exactly the same (or thereabouts) price from Jessops! Without the benefit of UK support.)
Here is a link to a Sweex version of the same device [click] (http://www.bluepoint.net/SWESDC037) and here is another[click] (http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Supplies-13125)
If you live in Devon or Cornwall, you can get them at Trago Mills at a great over the counter price. Saw them there today. Don't be confused by the slightly different layout of the buttons and case, it is definitely the same item as an MG-35. I have one myself. They come in a variety of packages - empty or with various pre-installed hard disks (different sizes).
The Freecom versions are identical to the original MG-35, including the button layout - and you'll find them on Google's Froogle Website, from a multitude of different sources [click] (http://www.google.co.uk/products?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLR,GGLR:2006-27,GGLR:en&q=freecom+mediaplayer+35&um=1&sa=X&oi=product_result&resnum=1&ct=title).
Don't be fooled by the "New" moniker - they're not that new anymore.
Oh - I've just been to the AL-Tech website, and noted that their new MG-35S is identical in form factor to the Sweex MM130!

does this device now play x264 .mkv files? because the tivx 4100 & i guess 5100 also now do with a new fw.
im considering getting the tivx but wondering how this mediagae or variation there of compares.
basically what i want to be able to do is unpack (zip or rar) a media file (ie. video) that is on my pc onto the device through network. in other words leave the mediagate or othr similiar device conncted to my tv or receiver (preferably via hdmi) connect ethernet cable to the mediagate device and then on my pc unrar the file onto he mediagate through the network. then can shutdown pc & watch on tv through the mediagate. i dont like leaving my pc on when i dont have to b treaming evrything.
currentl i leave my files rar'd on pc & unpack onto a 2.5" usb poered ext. hdd which i then connct to device conncted to tv to view. since i have to unpck the file anyway it would be nice to do it straight to the device via ethrnet that stays in plce connected to the tv.
again can hi eviceplay x264 .mkv fils like the tivx now can & can it be used how i described here? how dos the price compre to the tivx, and taking into consideration id prob want to put a 75 gb hdd in it.
750gb hdd. sorry for that & other typo due to using smartphone that mises keys & i cant edit using the mobile version of this site.
Crosswise 10-10-07, 12:54 PM Hi there,
I have got a Freecom 35 Mediaplayer, found this wonderful thread and installed the firmware 1.4.9.3. Now some things don't do as expected/stated.
1. I cannot browse the files while playing back (which was no problem with 1.4.7 firmware from freecom)
2. after creating a playlist and using it the player states: please wait, for some minutes, then showing hieroglyphics. nothing works exccept turning off and on again.
3. same problem when in audio-mode, pressing "2" on a folder.
should i use another firmware? i wouldn't like that because the look is much nicer now :)
hope somebody can help me.
thanks in advance
teddystacker 10-10-07, 01:57 PM As stated in its read_me file 1.4.9.3 is a "developer" version ie its only for use by developers, and one or two issues have been reported with it..
I really suggest you go to the files section at my Yahoo group and download 1.4.9.2 , as stated here..
MG-35 1.4.9.2 - Release Version.
1.4.9.2 has been very well tested by 100's of users and no issues (other than those reported in the stock 1.4.9 f/w).have been reported.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods
Just out of interest where did you obtain 1.4.9.3 from? , and was there not a read_me with it?,as if its not distributed with its read_me , the average user can get confused...
Regards
Teddy

Crosswise 10-10-07, 02:41 PM oh, sorry. i was confused.
first of all thanks for your fast answer... but it was in fact 1.4.9.2, not 3.
and it seems that i have the same problems with playlist-handling as with the original 1.4.9 by al tech. i can select the list, sometimes it works correctly and i then can access it (without getting one mp3 to run btw., but at least i can see the list), other times the hieroglyphics appear and i must reboot.
i would really love to have a playlist with all my 5000 songs in it and working random function to play them...
teddystacker 10-10-07, 03:34 PM Hi again
Yes i think thats bug has already been reported in the orig (Stock) 1.4.9 f/w - Suggest you report it direct to Al Tech at their Q and A Forum , I would not mention that you are using 1.4.9.2 , otherwise they will just say its the 3rd party f/w to blame. If you have tried 1.4.9 stock and are getting the same results , tell them you are using 1.4.9.. But dont hold your breath on a fix , Al Tech are still fixing major bugs years after the 35 was introduced...

Crosswise 10-11-07, 12:10 AM well, i expected something like that.
you don't have to be sorry, i suppose you didn't develop this bug-player ;)
on the other hand i am quite happy with some of the features...
on the german freecom-board i found people having the same problems with playlists, and some of them seem to have a solution with manual changing of relative paths to start with "../" and changing all "\" to "/". I think I will try this out first (somebody stated that playlists with more than 2000 entries will have the player hung up regardless of which playlist-format you use).
for now let me thank you for at least trying to help me with my problem.
kind regards,

Kaizen28 10-12-07, 07:05 PM Hi All
I'm seriously considering getting one of these as a gift for a technically challenged father-in-law who lives on the other side of the world as the quality of TV there leaves a lot to be desired....
1) Is the power supply able to support 220V at 50Hz
2) With HD and wireless being of no importance, is there any reason not to get the 35 over the 350HD?
Thanks in advance!
teddystacker 10-12-07, 08:58 PM @Kaizen28
1)Yes, the PSU also works at 220/240 , as I take mine to the UK when we go back "home" each year - works flawless - your Father-in Law may just need a adaptor to change the pin config from American or whatever to the country where he lives - available from any travel shop or Radio shack.
2)The 350 is more "compatiable" at playing video than the 35 - I own both and there does appear to be fewer problems playing stuff on the 350 - but not a great deal in it really , totally depend on the format of the stuff he is going to play.. The 350 also has the Iradio feature and of cource you can change the GUI.

Hey Guys,
All these customized firmwares look really nice to me, and talking about newbies...here I come! I have two question about the MG350HD. Do you guys know if it's capable to run an itunes server? What about a b1tt0rrent client?
Thanks,

teddystacker 10-14-07, 02:17 PM Thanks for the comment on the GUI,always welcome..
Ref ITunes and ********** , BOTH are a no no on the 350 at the moment I am sorry to say..
I know that bit torrent demand a very large license fee as I guess Apple would - so unless someone with the Skills adds these two features to the 350 firmware,I cant see Al Tech ever supporting these..

teddystacker 10-14-07, 03:18 PM There is a known network bug in recent MG-35 firmwares, which sometimes means that ISO's of high bitrates stutter.
This bug was NOT present in firmwares prior to 1.4.5 - so if you load f/w 1.4.4 , your problem isos should play ok - but you will loose the more recent firmware features afforded by 1.4.9.
This issue has been reported to Al Tech ,by myself and so far they have not fixed it.. Or even commented on it.
Maybe if you report your problem at their Q and A board , you may jog them into action..
http://www.airlinktek.com/english/atboard.php?class1=cs&class2=qna
Maybe a good idea to mention that this problem has already been reported by Teddystacker previous inc a test iso upload to their ftp server..

slackermt 10-14-07, 08:43 PM Does anyone know if it's possible to connect 2 Mediagate devices over the network? As an example, if I have a 350HD set up in the living room, and an MG-35 connected in the bedroom, and they're both on a 100mbit wired network, can the MG-35 play files that are on the 350HD and vice versa? This would be quite cool.
teddystacker 10-14-07, 09:37 PM This would only be possible in two ways..
1)The MG35 was plugged in Via USB to the 350.That way the 350 could see the content of the 35's hard disc ,you would need a long USB repeater cable todo this..
2)You could plug your 35 into your PC via USB and "share out" its drive. The 350 would then be able to see and play its content over your wired network..
The two machines cannot talk directly to each other over the network - two 350's could using the inbuilt ftp server but not a 35 and a 350.

slackermt 10-14-07, 10:16 PM Thanks TeddyStacker. I've got another question. I see that it will play DVD ISO files. Now I know that there have been software programs out there that allow you to rip DVD's into ISO files and remove copy protection, but most of these get taken off the market due to legality issues. Do you know of a program that can legally copy the data of a store bought DVD to a hard drive so that it can be played back on the 350HD?
teddystacker 10-15-07, 12:59 PM All Dvd/cd ripping is againt the law for whatever reason, and I would never endorse it..
But...
The Combination of these two programs will rip anything on the market to a ISO which will play flawless on the Mediagate..
1)Anydvd from Slysoft.com
2)Dvd Shrink

rjc1072 10-15-07, 07:47 PM Hi Everyone - I just purchased a second MG35 off ebay (used) cause I liked my first unit so much and got it at a pretty good price. However, when I received this one, I am getting a flashing blue light.
I loaded the hard drive and my PC recognizes the drive. I can even move files to and from the unit, but I'm not getting any display on my TV.
Any ideas on what the issue may be?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Do you know about the Video Button trick on the remote control?
There are about 12 different video output settings, pressing the Video button will rotate between them all one by one. If you can't get a picture that way, then it sounds as if it is faulty, or not connected correctly.
rjc1072 10-15-07, 08:14 PM Ok...stupid mistake on my part. I had the unit plugged into the USB port still which was causing the flashing blue. That has since gone away.
However, I now have a different issue in that I can't get a display on my TV. I don't see a Video button the the MG35 remote. Is there a button I can try that will cycle through the video out settings?
Thanks again!
rjc1072 10-15-07, 08:41 PM Ok...Dumb mistake #2 for the evening...the battery in the remote was dead which is why when I was pressing "Video" nothing was working. Just got back from Walgreens, but in the new battery and everything was back and functional. It's always the easy stuff :) Cheers!
tsmiggy 10-16-07, 05:37 AM I have transfered some dvd files video_ts files, and when i move them from my pc to my Mediagate they do not appear in the right order.I can find the file that plays the dvd file from the beginning, but should it not appear at the top of the list,if that makes sense............. :).Have i managed to confuse you all lol.
lundman 10-16-07, 09:06 PM It's unlikely the original people who tried "fuse" are still here, but I managed to get fuse to appear to work on the LimHD200i, which is a 2.4.22 kernel (the same no?). I can provide steps (or fuse.o) if someone wants to try it themselves.
It's unlikely the original people who tried "fuse" are still here, but I managed to get fuse to appear to work on the LimHD200i, which is a 2.4.22 kernel (the same no?). I can provide steps (or fuse.o) if someone wants to try it themselves. That is excellent news.
I was not one who originally tried to compile the kernel, but I was following their progress.
The issue they encountered was about 6 or so symbols that exist in the current kernel that do not exist in any of the available kernel source. This prevented the supplied kwhl.o module from being able to be loaded because a newly compiled kernel was missing the needed functions.
But this dies with -
/> Using khwl.o
unresolved symbol gpio_enable_irq
So, the MG-35 kernel has a kernel symbol that the khwl.o module needs and which isn't in the newly compiled kernel.
other missing kernel symbols were:
01018618 gpio_enable_irq
010186b4 gpio_disable_irq
010186fc gpio_irq_enabled
01018738 gpio_irq_pending
01018770 gpio_clear_irq
010187a8 gpio_set_dir
010187ec gpio_set_data
fipmodule.o uses all but gpio_irq_enabled.
It was first described here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8173087#post8173087
The kernel source with those missing symbols has never been released as per GPL requirements by Sigma/AlTech. All they ever released was a incomplete set of source for a generic kernel (without working config files)

rjc1072 10-17-07, 11:13 AM Hi everyone - I have 2 quick questions...
Does the MG25 use the same chip as the MG35 for decoding / playback? I understand they use the smaller hard drive, but was wondering about the decoding.
Is there a place I can pick up or order a second power supply for the MG35's?
Thanks!
teddystacker 10-17-07, 11:57 AM @rjc1072
Welcome...
1)The MG-25 uses the same processor as the 35 and the same basic design. The firmwares are similar but different and are NOT interchangeable. The GUI is different and also looks slightly better than the Al Tech GUI (but not as good as our custom MG-35 GUI ha ha).The 25 does not have any network support, you fill the hard disk via the USB slave port..
2)Ref the PSU , this has been discussed before in this thread, but you have to make sure you get one thats EXACTLY the same,as many look the same, and a wrong one could damage your 35.
If you email Tony at MediagateUSA (tony@mediagateusa.com) , I think he will may able to assist you in obtaining one , expect to pay about $30.00 + shipping, please mention that I pointed you in his direction..
Just for your info , there are much better (and cheaper) 2.5" players on the market than the MG-25 , I use one from Keelai in China myself that has many more features for the price..
I have a Yahoo group to support them located here..

I tried on my MG-35. looks like a few other kernel symbols are unresolved.
/ # /sbin/insmod /net/TOWER/Movies/fuse.o
insmod: unresolved symbol simple_strtol
insmod: unresolved symbol set_page_dirty
insmod: unresolved symbol inode_init_once
insmod: unresolved symbol zone_table
I placed a copy of fuse.o on my media server "Movies" folder, since the disk in the MG-35 is read-only.
Good try.

lundman 10-17-07, 06:24 PM Hmm they are quote different then. Two of those functions are easy, but the other two would take some thinking, not really something I would want to do myself since I don't own a MG-35. But it was interesting to try.

Ref ITunes and ********** , BOTH are a no no on the 350 at the moment I am sorry to say..
Thanks Teddy. Any idea where I could get a wifi multimedia player that is capable of running an itunes server?
teddystacker 10-17-07, 07:20 PM Umm , this is a tough one as I think anything todo with Itunes would have to be licensed from Apple, and as we all know Apple does not like to give such licenses out to anyone.I guess "Apple TV" does not to this? - I myself would never look at.or have any interest any Apple products , as I hate how he tries to control the end user with his over Zealous DRM stuff..
Sorry I cannot help more here , maybe others know different?

NickLUK 10-30-07, 09:28 AM Hi,
Is this the correct place for this post? sorry if it is not.
I have had an MG35 for quite a while and have a 500GB hard installed, I have backed up a few DVD's onto it and use it when we go on holiday and its so compact and easy to hook up etc, works really well no issues at all.
I have recently hooked The MG35 up to my Buffalo TeraStation Live to stream my backed up DVD's to my Pioneer HD ready plasma TV, this is my configuration :
Terrastation on home network (Ethernet wired connection) connected to MG35 via Ethernet hub, MG35 connected to TV via s-video and the sound connected via digital audio output (single phone lead) to a SONY RHT-G800 - (Sony Bravia TV Stand With Integrated 5.1 Surround Sound Cinema System).
The issues I have are :
1. I can not get the MG35 to output a video signal to the component video outputs, so I just use the s-video output. I have used the "video" control on the remote to change the video output, but I can not get the TV to see a component video input. Am I right in assuming that the picture would be better than the s-video connection, if I could get it to work?
2. When I am watching video (backed up DVD's) that is being streamed from the Terrastaion across the network to the MG35, usually quite a way into some but not all of the films, the sound occasionally starts to jitter and stutter, and it becomes very unpleasant, also the picture sometime flickers a bit at the same time but not too bad.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem or any advice?
Many thanks

teddystacker 11-12-07, 05:47 PM Thanks to the efforts of Wizkidshaw (and the other graphic guys) , we can today realease:
MG-35 1.5.1 Firmware with New Royal Blue GUI added.
As per usual, this is just the Stock 1.5.1 Al Tech firmware with our New GUI added,no other mods have been made.
**NOTE** we strongly suggest when upgrading to this firmware , you apply the "Stock" 1.5.1 firmware FIRST - this is due to loader issues. And we have found that if upgrading DIRECLY from older firmware such as v1.4.5 to 1.5.1 you can brick your MG-35.
This firmware has been tested my myself, and as long as you follow the above procedure,it will work with no problems.
You can download the new release from the following area at my Yahoo..

Greetings ... is the v151 release for all MG-35s, or only the newer models (/S)? Are there any significant features/improvements in v151?
Thanks.
TheKrell 11-14-07, 10:11 AM is the v151 release for all MG-35s, or only the newer models (/S)?I believe it's for all. (It works on my non-/S.) Supraeon posted the release notes above.
I believe it's for all. (It works on my non-/S.) Supraeon posted the release notes above. It is my understanding that the /S model is newer and has an SATA interface for the hard disk rather than an IDE interface. They use the same firmware.
Thank you TheKrell and J.L. for the replies - I can report v151 is installed and working well. In fact it has fixed 2 .avi playback problems that I have been troubled with ...
takabanana 11-16-07, 11:27 AM What methods/tools are you guys using to convert vides to MPEG-4/Xvid format so that the MG-35 can play it?
I don't want to use 3, 4, 5 tools - I'd prefer just using ONE simple GUI tool, which can batch convert (from AVI, MPEG-2, or DVD), and output good quality MPEG-4 (I'm thinking Xvid) that the MG-35 can play.
I'm currently eyeing using WinAVI Video Converter.
Any suggestions/opinions?
teddystacker 11-16-07, 03:45 PM I always suggest "Super" ,it converts very well, to formats the 35 can play..

bluntspoon 11-18-07, 08:15 PM Am having a problem streaming from my computer over a powerline network. Between about 15-20 minutes in the movie/show will suddenly stop and the unit will drop back to the choose network or hard drive screen. There is no stuttering or problems leading up to the dropout, it's sudden and without warning. I am getting about 5 megs (34 megabits) a second transfer speed on files. I have turned off any power saving settings on the host computer I could find, but am stuck on what else it could be.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

vonjibb 11-20-07, 11:20 PM Hi guys,
I updated to firmware 1.5.1 from 1.4.7, and for some reason, the avi
files on my comp with AC3 still play with no sound on the device. I
can't figure it out - I thought this was fixed in version 1.4.9 in the
official version and even earlier in one of your beautifully crafted
mod versions. What could be the problem? For reference: the files are
avi files w/ AC3 (48000Hz 384 kb/s total (5 chnls)).
~Thx

What our mod fixed was specifically mpeg files (as in .MPG), .AVI uses a different module.
I believe the newer official firmware also fixed just mpeg playback. Maybe they broke something?

I generally use AutoGK with XviD. Just be sure to enable either MTK/Sigma or ESS compatibility to ensure they play without problems. (ESS is most compatible with all players)
WinAVI is a fast encoder, but I wouldn't say it gives you the best results.
mrdavet 11-23-07, 11:01 AM quick question:
The web-page for the new MG-35S (sata drive) lists that it will act as USB-host for a thumb drive.
The current web-page for the MG-35 (IDE drive) lists that it will do the same.
With the latest firmware (which is apparently the same for both MG-35 and MG-35s) allow me to connect a thumb drive to MG-35?
teddystacker 11-23-07, 11:15 AM The Current MG-35 DOES NOT have a USB host port - so whatever firmware you use , you cannot use a thumb drive on it..
I presume they must be altering the actual hardware for the MG-35S,if they say its going to support a thumb drive..

No NDAS key or hard disk. Works great, included never used remote.
karl222 11-28-07, 06:49 PM Great thread. Just got a MG-35 and have been learning a lot.
I'm afraid I do need some help though. I am running mpeg-4 video files off the hard drive to my TV. Some times they run fine but other times they freeze in the middle and then the drive needs rebooting. Just to show that I am really not technical the only symptom I've spotted is that the green light that flashes as it reads the hard drive normally stops a few seconds before the screen freezes.
It also sometimes needs to be unplugged for a while before it will work again, but sometimes will turn right back on.
Ive tried a variety of things to get it to work but no luck. Is there a reason that it would play one mpeg-4 file and not another? I used AVI codec to try and spot a difference in the file to no real luck.
I have also watch some files on my computer running direct from the 35's hard drive using a USB connection and it seems to be fine.
Any help you could give would be very welcome. I fear that it may just be broken.
TheKrell 11-28-07, 09:45 PM I am running mpeg-4 video files off the hard drive to my TV. Some times they run fine but other times they freeze in the middle and then the drive needs rebooting... It also sometimes needs to be unplugged for a while before it will work again, but sometimes will turn right back on. As a test, open the side and dangle the hdd far away from the MG-35 electronics. If this test fixes the freeze-up problem, then you are overheating your MG-35.
teddystacker 11-28-07, 11:11 PM Also could be a hard disc error , try hooking the 35 to your pc via USB and run check disc , making sure you check u check both file system and for bad sectors..
Dont forget to install our new GUI firmware 1.51 for a much better look - details at mt 35 Yahoo group..

karl222 11-30-07, 08:10 AM Thanks to both of you. Unfortuantly neither suggestion worked. It's certainly not overheating as it is doing it after only operating for 10 mins or so. I ran the disk check but then it crashed again.
Is it more likely to be the hard drive or unit do you think? I may try a new hard drive and see if thats any better.
Any other suggestions would be gratefully recieved.
teddystacker 11-30-07, 03:40 PM Hi again,
I suspect the hard disk, being as the unit plays fine over the lan. As you say , if you swap it , you will know for sure then..

nintwala 11-30-07, 06:35 PM Hi everyone, its been a while...
I have the royal blue 1.4.9 version of the firmware. When I try to upgrade to Official 1.5.1 firmware I get a "Upgrade Failed" message.
Anyone have any clue?
teddystacker 11-30-07, 08:18 PM Hi
99% of the time when you get that message, its due to a bad download - just re-download the file and try again..
Also , as I suggested in the read me file that was included with the realease , I strongly suggest you 1st apply the "official" Al Tech 1.51,reboot and then apply 1.51 with the New Gui..

TheKrell 12-01-07, 11:14 AM It's certainly not overheating as it is doing it after only operating for 10 mins or so.:confused: What about the "10 minutes" tells you that it's not overheating? That's a good warm-up time in my book.
I suspect the hard disk, being as the unit plays fine over the lan. Maybe I've developed a temporary blindness, but I can see no mention by Karl of any playback over the LAN. However, that's another good test. If you go diskless (avoiding any issues originating in the disk itself) and play back over your LAN, do you still observe these crashes after 10 minutes or so?
teddystacker 12-01-07, 11:56 AM [QUOTE=TheKrell;12368632 Maybe I've developed a temporary blindness, but I can see no mention by Karl of any playback over the LAN. minutes or so?[/QUOTE]
@Krell,
As usual when you find (and point out ) my errors,I am totally wrong and you are 10000% correct , I stand humblely corrected - I must have been confused with another one of the 35/350 questions I had answered - I apolgise to you and Karl for misleading/confusing information..Always makes me feel good to admit mistakes...
But getting back to the Topic , Karl - try playing the problem files over the lan and let us know what happens after a hour or so playing..
Kindest regards

bestillmyheart 12-01-07, 01:20 PM Sorry to just barge in as a newbie, but I need some pointing in the right direction.
I'm in the United Kingdom, and just stumbled upon the Packard Bell Store and Play, and love the look of it. I followed a trail of links along, and now I'm here.
I'm looking to buy one of these devices in time for Christmas, need a little bit of help.
1) Which particular model is the ideal one to have, and where is the best place to buy them? There seem to be a lot of different versions. I want the highest capacity possible, preferably keeping it near Ģ220, but would be willing to go above that at a push. Would also be happy to upgrade HD myself, if it is possible and works out cheap.
2) I'm concerned about aesthetics, as if I'm paying good money for something I want it to look nice. I like the look of the Packard Bell device, and the look of the remote. Which one has the 'nicest' looking GUI, and are the remotes included with them good quality? As in, do they feel solid, do they have that dodgy cheap plastic smell and feel, etc.
3) What stuff do I need to download/install, and in which order?
Thanks, this is all very confusing and after reading 20 pages of this thread I'm feeling none the wiser.
teddystacker 12-01-07, 03:16 PM @bestillmyheart
Hi,
OK,1st no need to apolgise for being a newbie , we were all that way once, and I for one never forget that - so wilI gladly help as much as I can..
I am Ex Leicester - live in the USA now,but again will try and advise where I can..
So to answer your questions..
1) This really depends what you want to use the devicew for and what your needs are - ie do you need wireless,a model to support HD etc etc..
If you want to hook it up to a computer network that is hard wired and you only have a Std CRT TV then you will only need the MG-35 (Called the Freecom player 35 in the UK).
On the other hand,if you need it to be wireless and you have a nice HD 1080p TV , then I would go for the MG-350HD (Called the Freecom Mediaplayer 350 in the UK).
Both models can be brought at the best prices off Ebay in the UK , and there are many reputable sellers that have been selling these units a good while..
You can buy the model without a hard disk , here in the USA you can get a 500gb IDE hard disk for $120.00 delivered , I know this will be more expensive in the UK due to VAT etc , but we are not tyalking huge amounts of money and a 500gg is some serious storage even in this day and age.And its real easy to fit a hard disc if you are a little computer savy.
2)The MG-350 and MG-35 (The Freecoms are EXACTLY the same , just the badge on the front is different). The remotes that come with them are not the best , but both models can be used with the Logitech Harmony remote , if you want to buy something much better.
3) Again this depends on various factors , ie if you want to hook it up to your pc network at home , if not then all you have todo is mostly take it out of the box and connect it up yourself - very easy..
I know you will have loads more questions to ask - please feel free to ask as many as you want , either here or at my dedicated MG-35/MG-350 Yahoo groups..
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MG-350HD_Support/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods/
This is also a good resource page dedicated to Freecom products - Remember the Freecom players are EXACTLY the same as the MG-35 and MG-350 , ie the hardware is EXACTLY the same - just re-badged for the UK market.

JamesToddA 12-01-07, 11:33 PM I have a mediagate 350 HD media player, which I connect to my mac to play movies and mp3's etc. I had it working in 10.4 like a champ but my 10.5 install broke it
I am not that tech savvy and I used to use sharepoints to do this through a gui in the system prefs. 10.5 broke that as well
I need to enable guest smb login on a 10.5 machine.
Can any one give me a step by step on how to alter my smb.conf (assume I know nothing, I am a terminal newbie) to allow guest login to a directory in 10.5?
Help, I'm desperate
JamesToddA 12-01-07, 11:43 PM I know what is wrong, which samba guest access is not set up, which you have to do by hand by altering the smb.conf file. Just don't know how to do it.
How do you upgrade the firmware? I have never done that yet. I do not have a HD in the player. I have just been using it as a wired media player on my network. USB Thumb Drive?
There was a nice utility system pref software called Sharepoints that made it very easy to enable guest access on directory in 10.4, but it turns out that 10.5 broke the software. It was shareware and the author says it is going to take him a while to get the software up.
IF this is working for you, what directory do you have your media stored in?
g'day,
I want to buy a Media player soley for Music. Around 300 gb's.
A Few questions about the mediagate 35,
Does it have a sleep mode, will it turn itself off after a while,
Can it play randomly between more than one folder. or at all.
Can you search through other files whilst already playing a file.
Does it play mp3's with various bite rates.
I'm not interested in hd, nor streaming wireless, but am also attracted to the mg-350 as it is newer and may have more firware improvements to come. does this sound like a reasonable enough suggestion or should i just settle for the mg-35 with what i require it for.
Sorry,
I also wanted to ask the same questions of the MG-350. Or if one can suggest any other alternative system that can perform the duties i require for music.
Thanks
If music is your main use, then I wouldn't recommend the MG-35. Definitely not its strong point. It plays all mp3's I thrown at it, but the interface for music and setting up playlists leaves a lot to be desired. I can only assume the MG-350HD is similar, but I have not tried it.
There are quite a few other players out there dedicated to playing music, either by wireless or wire or both, that would probably do the job a lot more gracefully.
Havent had any experience with them though so couldnt recommend one sorry.
beertax 12-06-07, 03:53 PM Hi all,
I am new to this forum, and specifically registered in the hopes that someone can help me with my MG-35. I did a search query and read thru around 20 pages of this thread but there is just too much and I can't process it all I am afraid.
My problem is that while my desktop can read my MG-35, my laptop does not read it at all - doesn't know that it exists. My desktop and laptop, as well as the MG-35, is connected to a linksys hub, which is connected to a netgear router that is conencted to a cable modem. The firmware for my MG-35 is 1.4.3. I have the NDAS software, and both the NDAS device ID as well as Write key.
Can any1 tell me what i must do for my laptop to recognize the MG-35 on my network? thanx in advance for any replies.

I can tell you that it is doable since I do it at my home. First, you must installed NDAS in your laptop, and Mount it as I am sure you are doing in the desktop. Both my laptop and desktop are XP, perhaps your OS are different? Al
beertax 12-06-07, 05:23 PM both my laptop and desktop have XP Home addition service pack 2.
Both are connected to the hub via cable wire. I don't use wireless in my home.

You did not say if you have NDAS installed in your laptop, as well as in your computer. NDAS is the only way to "see" the MG-35. You mount the MG-35 by right click on the NDAS icon on the bottom right hand side and registering the MG-35 and then Mount R/W.
beertax 12-07-07, 08:58 PM ahh my apologies. Yes the NDAS is installed on both computers. The desktop reads the device thru NDAS as well as My Computer, but the laptop's NDAS has the MG-35 greyed out.

Can't help since it seems that you have done what I have done, and my apparently similar setting works just fine. BTW, I communicate with my MG-35 wireless via a bridge. I also have two MG-350 and I also see them along with the MG-35 wirelessly in both of my computers... Al

I am confused now....
teddystacker 12-10-07, 11:26 AM Ok, Mediagate USA are often way behind in posting new firmware - New Firmware always gets posted here 1st..
The No.1 source for firmweare and MG-35 is my dedicated MG-35 Yahoo Group..
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods/
1)Al Techs main site - This is the "official Stock" firmware that contains the awful "Battleship Gray" GUI.
http://www.airlinktek.com/english/download.php
2)Within a few days of any New "official" firmware release , we will post our firmware - this is "stock" but with a much improved Royal Blue GUI , which is ten times better than the Al Tech offering..
It can always be downloaded at my MG-35 Yahoo group located here:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods/files/
Then go to "Beta Firmware" , and then "Non-Developer Releases" - I cannot post a direct link , as Yahoo the spaces mess things up a little.
These releases have had many 100's of downloads and are always well tested before release.
Please feel free to ask any questions..

nintwala 12-12-07, 01:43 PM teddystacker: Thanks for the reply before. For some reason you have to do "safe eject" thing in Windows before you pull the plug on the USB. I was being impatient and kept unplugging it even though I downloaded it multiple times. Once I ejected it and ran the upgrade file, it worked fine.
Question: I am looking for the 1.51 blue GUI firmware.
I dont see it in the rapid share link in your signature.

If you read my post above...

You will find details there where 1.5.1 can be downloaded , ie at my Yahoo group - I cannot post a direct link , as the spaces in the file name get messed up by Yahoo - its VERY VERY easy to find at my MG-35 Yahoo group ..

teddystacker 12-13-07, 02:19 PM Hi,
Welcome , the answer to adding codecs is NO - sadly these are built into hardware and cannot be altered or added , this applies to the leatest generation machines as well as the MG-35 and MG-350.

rjc1072 12-15-07, 09:26 AM Hi - Is there a problem with Fast Forwarding with the MG35? I have all of my movies in mpeg4 format but am not able to FF, Rew, or Chapter advance.
I'm running the latest 1.5.1 firmware (tired stock and custom firmware). This also didn't work with 1.4.9.
I'm just wondering if it's the player or the way I'm encoding (btw - using clone dvd mobile to encode to mpeg4).
Thanks in advance!

Check the hard disk jumper settings , there are three , try each one, sounds like its set incorrect..
If you want to throw it , please though it this way , rather than let the worms eat it :-)..

I am sorry to bother you but I really need your help on downloading the stock firmware 1.5.1.
I really cannot get (for some misterious reason) to the airlinktek website ( http://www.airlinktek.com/english/download.php ).

Is there any of you (please :( ) who can upload somewhere else, so to allow me to get it ?
I really need it cause I wanted to upgrade my MG-35 to 1.5.1 blu Royal desktop, which ( as far as I understood ) needs the stock 1.5.1 installed first.
Can any of you help on this ?

Anyone have any idea's on the Fast Forwarding issue? Iis it a MediaGate issue or the way I'm encoding? If the MediaGate can't do this, can anyone recommend a player that does (preferably an enclosure type player)
Thanks!
teddystacker 12-24-07, 01:50 PM I myself encode everything via the Xvid codec in the .avi container - FF and REW always work prefectly..

gadgetmind 01-01-08, 06:41 AM Happy New Year to Everyone!
Yes, it's me again. Just when I thought I was done with the MG-35 my Brother In Law comes to visit for Christmas and says he's going to bring this amazing new gadget with him to show me. Yes, he pulls out a Freecom MG-35 !!!
I explain that it's not really that new to me and give him the 30 second version of what I've done with the beast in the past.
Anyway, I then gifted him my remaining MG-35 that has been on a shelf for about a year and promised to send him details of where the firmware has got to. I thought that while digging in here to find the latest and greatest, that I might as well say hello.

He's my Brother In Law, but neither he nor my actual brother know anything about embedded development. They glaze over in a similar way to my Wife when I discuss the subject. Be good to get back to work tomorrow! :-)
As it happens, my work has been heading more into embedded Linux territory as we've been porting Linux to a totally new architecture (our own design of multi-threaded DSP) so we've been deep into kernel work, tool chains, drivers, and such like. All great fun! I'm managing the project and the tinkering I did on the MG-35 has proved really useful and makes it hard for the actual engineers to pull the wool over my eyes. And they know it. :-)

teddystacker 01-01-08, 01:48 PM Ian,
Great to see you back at the thread you gave so much to... and a very happy new year to you and your family...
I am sure you will tell your Bro in law that he is always welcome both here and at my Yahoo groups , should he need any help / advice that you cannot give him.
The latest 1.5.1 firmware with Robs superb **ROYAL BLUE** GUI added can be found at my Yahoo group.
Kind Regrads

Evileendje 01-02-08, 03:33 PM Best wishes to all !!
I own a Freecom mediaplayer 3.5 for a year and a half now and it worked fine. But since i reinstalled my computer it disconnects after 5 to 10 minutes. The error message it gives is something in the order of "network connection was disconnected, check the pc share".
I installed the latest firmware 1.5.1.
But it seems the problem is in the network. I checked and my network \ pc preferences are like mentioned in the manual (as far as i can tell).
I can't find an answer and the helpdesk @ the netherlands couldn't really help me.
crimson23 01-03-08, 07:20 AM Happy New Year All,
I was hoping someone could help! I've seem to have bricked my Freecom Media Palyer 35 before even having a chance to enjoy it... typical ;-)
Anyways... I tried to install the latest firmware "MG35-1.5.1 Plus New Gui Added" from the Yahoo AL Tech Mediagate Mg-35 Firmware Mods webpage. Unfortunitly i was a little impatient as i haven't yet got a HDD and therefore tried to do the upload over the network. Everything seemed to be going well untill 74% where it looked like it got stuck. I left it for 10 mins which afterwards looked liked it had hung. Left it for anothe 20 mins and it was back at the main menu, but however with a green corrupted screen. I rebooted the MG-35 (but the freecom one) and now the LEDS just flash.
I know i can unbrick the device as described here : mediagate.pbwiki.com/Debricking however i don't know about whether i can create the serial cable as required and shown here wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/Serial_cable as i can't solder ;-(
Does anyone know what cables i can use in the UK, that might have a RS232 level converter built in so all i need to do is cut off the other end and connect the cables to the PCB on the freecom device without the need to solder?
Thanks all.... Looking forward to getting it up and working.
Lance

teddystacker 01-03-08, 09:41 AM Hi and welcome to the group...
Sorry to hear about your MG/Freecom..
Depending on where the upgrade failed , you may or may not be able to de brick the 35 - if it failed during writing the bootloader , I fear the unit is trashed , but that would be very unluckly,as the programming bootloader part only takes a few secs..
If you go to my MG-350 Yahoo group located here - I just posted details on where to buy the necessary cable.. (the same cable is used for either the 350 or 35)
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/MG350HD_Suport/message/1174
Or if you dont want to de brick it yourself , I do offer a De-bricking service , but as I said above I cannot promise anything..

crimson23 01-03-08, 11:18 AM thanks for the reply Teddy. I did come across your website as well... Too bad you don't offer the debrick service in the UK... Maybe that's something you should consider...
Could you please resend the link to the MG-350 post. I couldn't open it first time.. and searching for the MG-350 yahoo group didn't bring back anything.
I'll have a look at what cables you suggest, and see if i feel comfortable to try it out. In the mean time i'm seeing if i can send it back to the seller for a replacement (just dotting the i's and crossing the t's). I am rather the kinda persont that would rather fix it themselves just in case it ever had to happen again. Fingers crossed and hopefully i'm not unlucky and it is fixable ;-)

crimson23 01-03-08, 02:58 PM Thanks, that's brilliant ;-)
I've just ordered myself a cable from the guy you mentioned. I hope you are on commision.. ;-) Let me know if you ever want me to de-brick any devices for you on my side... will save international postage which could be high... and speed up the process for your customers...
Thanks again,
Lance
teddystacker 01-03-08, 03:32 PM Naw, I aint into this to make $ just to help out the users (and cover my costs) , this is a hobby not a day Job..
I did try to get the guy to give us a "group price" for the cables , so members could get them cheaper , but he is not interested and not very friendly - but its the only place we know of where you can get them at a good price without having to make them yourselves, and i guess he knows this :-)

John Forrest 01-04-08, 11:37 AM Hi guys,
Newbie here with a simple question I hope, though I can't find anything in this thread or any of the other sites
I have a Freecom Mediaplayer 35 which has been flashed with the custom GUI 1.5.1 firmware and all is working fine.
Trying to get around the NDAS issue with current rates of 750k to 1Mbit being a tad slow.
Question being:
Can the MG-35 read from a proper NAS box?
If I were to get for example
Netgear-SC101-NAS-LAN-Network-Attached-Storage-Center
Ebay item 220188288454
and hook it up to the same router as the MG-35 would the MG-35 be able to see the shares on the NAS box and stream from it?
Hope I didn't miss something obvious - I did look - Honest :)
Thanks a lot....
teddystacker 01-04-08, 11:57 AM Hi John.
And welcome to the MG-35 world and thread...
The short answer to your question is I dont know.but...
In theory a NAS should work with the 35,and I am pretty sure that we have in the past, had reports of other users running a NAS.
I also have a Popcornhour media player that also acts as a NAS via it built in samba server, and I CAN connect to that with my 35 and 350.I guess unless you are actually running that model of NAS its not really possible to say 100%.
Sorry i cannot help more...
Regards
Teddy

John Forrest 01-04-08, 09:47 PM Thanks Teddystacker...
I can't see why it wouldn't work with a NAS, and I will be buying one anyway.
I originally wanted a NAS with a media player built in and thought this might work but the speed is just too slow.
The Rapsody N35 was an option but again it didn't really justify the cost and there seems more "support" for the MG-35.
If I can get it rigged up successfully I'll post back and let you guys know.
Fingers crossed :)
John.
Hi John.

Teddy

I really didn't get on with the N35 and sold mind within a few weeks of getting it.

Really?
Can I ask why you gave up on it so soon?
The majority of reviews and forums seem to imply that it's a far superior box to the MG-35.
Was it anything in particular?
I ask as i'm still toying with the idea of getting one.
Cheers...
_Danny_ 01-06-08, 04:28 PM Hi there!
While i'm waiting for my own freecom player i've been reading this "thread" ... not all 3921 posts but damn near close. Although the old developers don't seem to be around much anymore i still wish to tell them: GREAT JOB! I just can't wait to see my player in action with all these extras you guys provided.
I'm wondering though, is there still any development going on, maybe on another forum? I ask because i think i've got a few ideas about improving this stuff a little more, all just theory since i don't have the hardware yet but i'd like to get a headstart ;-)
Another thing, i haven't checked out the stuff at sourceforge yet but i'd like to know if it's up to date (i.e. rev 1.5.1)?
Some things i'd like to try;
From what i've read i understand dvdplayer.bin will remount the partition to r/o from time to time. What i didn't see was weather it'll do so for all partitions or just the first? I got the impression it will only mount the first partition. If it does, how about creating a second partition which could be mounted r/w and have some symbolic links in the first partition point to the second? The ftp daemon should then be able to write without fear of dvdplayer.bin changing write access.
Another option would be a mount wrapper which has been mentioned by Ian but i've missed anyone mentioning an implementation?
I'd like to add a DVD-Rom player instead of a HD. I've seen attempts to do so but people who did neglected to tell if they altered the mount commands? A DVD player cannot be mounted with the fat or ntfs options.
Did anyone ever get the browser running? from what i've read dvdplayer.bin is the heart of the player but it doesn't really play anything. It mounts and defers playing to other executables right? The webserver seems to be capable of starting those executables as well, so might it be possible to replace dvdplayer.bin with the webbrowser? seems to me that would open up a whole new world of possibilities?
I'd like to help out with this stuff, i know my way around *nix and C and will be the proud owner of a MG-35 soon (hopefully).
Cheers, Danny.
pbarrette 01-06-08, 04:35 PM Hi Ian, Teddy, All,
Happy new year.
I'm still alive as well. I haven't really done any further development or investigation into the MG-35 for quite some time, but I am still around.
My MG-35 is still attached to my TV and still being used on occasion, but now that I've got cable TV in English the MG doesn't get used as much as it used to.
Anyway, I am still around, but I don't really have anything new to contribute at the moment.

teddystacker 01-06-08, 05:52 PM Hi Pb,
You dont know how great it is to see you and Gadgetmind posting on the same page of this thread within a few hours of each other.Brings back some great memories I can tell ya..
As you can see I am still around and still as involved as ever, although I only keep my 35 for testing these days as I have 2 x MG-350's I use daily..
There is VERY little development work being done at this time (other than adding Rob's GUI to any new firmware releases),but from time to time we have the odd person pass by ,but nothing on the Scale of what you and Ian contributed - you two and the others that did stuff have made many 35 users very happy with the addition of a GUI that at least looks semi professional..
Happy new year and good to see you are still around..
Regards
Teddy
PS IF you ever did feel like doing any other MG-35 development , a simple Samba server would be real nice, and is a MUCH requested feature :-)

teddystacker 01-06-08, 06:41 PM Hi Danny,
Welcome to the thread - you might want to repost your post at my dedicated MG-35 Yahoo group , located here..
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mg-35_firmware_mods/
These daysmore of the guys that might be interested in Mg-35 development hang out there, more than they do here.I am the organiser of the MG-35 development project ,but have no programming skills myself.
Also, if you have not already, you may like to have a look at the 35 Wiki , located here..
http://mediagate.pbwiki.com/
At this moment there is not really anyone doing any firm development work on the 35 (Apart from adding the New GUI to each new firmware release) - so anything you can do will be most welcome.
I don't think the sourceforge site has been updated for quite some time , same with the Wiki , so if you do any development work , would be grateful if you could add anything you do to the Wiki.
Thanks for getting in contact and look forward to seeing you over at the Yahoo group,
Kind Regards
Teddy

I don't think it will work. There's no reference to Samba/CIFS in the specs. It supports TCP/IP, DHCP, SAN protocols. Not sure what they mean by "SAN" ... I thought it was dedicated for Fibre Channel. I remember seeing that it _only_ works with Windows, because needs a driver to be installed.... something like NDAS.
shaurya 01-07-08, 04:17 PM Hello,
I just odered MG-35 but forgot to investigate this issue beforehand.
I store my movies on one computer (server1), that remains in Standby (S3) most of the time.
I store my Music/Photo on another Comuter (server2), that also remains in Standby (S3) most of the time.
Can Mediagate bring these computer (Server1, server2) out of standby to play the media either with WOL or network activty option.

Shaurya
gadgetmind 01-08-08, 05:19 AM Really?
Can I ask why you gave up on it so soon?
The majority of reviews and forums seem to imply that it's a far superior box to the MG-35.
The picture wasn't as good via composite and despite having menu entries for it, the box cannot output RGB. Its codec support was also no better than the MG-35 (still lots of stuff it couldn't play, or where it had bad lip sync, or where it had FF/RWD issues) and the UI was slow and long-winded.
The Geexbox based solution I went to was cheaper, handles EVERYTHING, is customisable so we can quickly navigate to our content and around inside it, and generally suits us better. However, we don't get overscan and its LOUD (though we have it off in a remote cupboard)
The Popcorn Home seems to be the latest/greatest according to Hijack.

Um, I have a "pending action" to drop some new stuff there.
Did anyone ever get the browser running?
Yes, I put one in some dev releases. It never did much, but there were a few pages and CGI was used to return some information. The CGI stuff had to be written in C (no hardship for you!) as the BusyBox shells aren't great.
Kicking off something playing, and clearing the screen first!, should be easy enough.

Not as it stands, but you might be able to add something to a startup script to do it. But the proggy that fires off the WOL packet would need to be written in C.

rtrimarchi 01-10-08, 01:59 PM hello everyone....
has anybody used the mg35 with a freeNAS server ??
For some reason, I can list the share on the freenas server, but when I get in, I do not see all the folders in the share.
At the bottom of the page-screen I see instead a bunch of weird strange letters instead of the file names or folder names or data.
I had a similar problem when I had a winxp server with the guest account not enabled....
Ofcourse freenas is different....
Any idea or experience on this ?????
thanks a lot in advance

CDLehner 01-10-08, 09:45 PM I'll be brief: had the MG-35 for about a year now. I'm a casual user and it's been on and off while I kind of get my media "strategy" straight. Just decided I would start playing with it a bit again and might as well update the firmware while I was at it. After my issue, I panicked and came back to this thread and it looks like I made just about every mistake in the book: I downloaded 1.4.9 from the MGUSA site, and tried to run the update from the network.
Of course I'm stuck at "checking current firmware..." and the only mistake I haven't made yet is powering off, but just how long am I supposed to wait before I face the inevitable? I mean, it's been like a half an hour already and it hasn't peeped.
CD :(
teddystacker 01-10-08, 11:11 PM All is ok - when it hangs with the "checking firmware" message , it usually means the firmware download is corrupt.Just re download 1.5.1 , copy to the internal hard disk , then try again,Then install the New Gui 1.5.1 firmware from my Yahoo group , and You will be very impressed with the updated GUI.

Its great to read how much effort you all put into the mediaplayer. And YES, I found some messages which are usefull to me. I want to find out the MAC-adres, so I need to run a firmware update. BUT, HOW DOES THAT WORK????
I put the file (version.update) into the PHOTO-directory, BUT I DO NOT SEE IT!!!!
PLEASE GIVE ME A CLUE!!!!
A happy user of the mediaplayer 35, trying to get more happy!!
teddystacker 01-12-08, 12:11 PM @Albert..
Welcome..
Ok , 1st
1)Why do you need the MAC address? , you do not need to do a update to obtain this
2)Where did you get the file "Version update" from?
If you have a MG-35 , you need to get this file from Al Techs site..
http://www.airlinktek.com/english/file_swfw/MG35_1.5.1_Eng.upgrade
Put this is the ROOT directory of the mg-35's hard disc ,then play it and then follow the prompts..
Once you have done this post back here and I will explain how to install our firmware with the updated GUI..

Hello,
Just wanted to provide the update. Got my MG-35. For the price I paid, I am VERY VERY HAPPY with this small gem. My real requirement was to watch photo, listen mp3 and watch DVD ISO (all stored in 2 media servers that are set to be in standby (S3) mode).
I was concenred about WOL. Although it doesn't do WOL but it does work with Wake on Activity. So all my server's Nic card are now set for Wake on activity. Servers are set to go into Standby(S3). When I turn on th MG-35 and go to either Video/Photo etc, I guess it sends some IP packet that wakes up the Servers.
But,
It doesn't reads the directory or files immediately as the servers are still waking up. So I have to turn of the MG-35 via remote and turn it on again... . Not a big deal for me (may be annoying for others). Note that servers are fully awake by this time and I can now enjoy my dvd or photo etc.
I am now trying to figure out the procedure to upgrade the firmware...have to read 132 pages...
Regards,
Shaurya

Try going back to the media selection menu and select Network again. I believe it will re-scan network shares and the 2nd time around your servers will respond in time.

How do I backup VCD or SVCD. Would an ISO (using Nero) would work with MG-35.
Moreover, how frequently one has to change the battery in the remote. Mine was a brand new battery that shipped with product but lasted only 3 weeks.

To convert To .ISO use "Dvdshrink" :- Do a google search to find a valid download link..
If wanting to rip a highly protected DVD you must use "Anydvd" from Slysoft in combo with the above: - www.slysoft.com
Ref remote battery - mine is the orginal and is almost 3 years old , no problems..

Thanks for your reply. I guess I was not clear enough. I am trying to backup some VCD's not DVD's. I have some VCD's that I want to store in hard drive and watch via MG-35. I have been using DVDShrink for DVD for almost 4 yrs. Great results.

teddystacker 01-24-08, 01:15 PM Ok , now I understand , sorry for the confusion..
Ok , use , VCDEASY - http://www.vcdeasy.org , to rip out the mpg from the Vcd or SVCD - this should then play directly on the 35 - if not , you can use one of the many free tools to convert the mpg you just ripped to Xvid or another format that plays well on the 35.

Hi all,
I couldn't find any info in the other forums, so I thought I'd ask here. Is there a way to back up the original firmware from the T1? The reason I'm asking is because I know there has been a lot of development on custom firmware versions, but one of the features that I have always wanted with the mg-35 or mg-350hd is the Tivo ability. I do have the pogoelectronics Mediagate T1 and would be willing to upload the firmware for some developers to take a look at. If someone could figure it out, the Tivo feature would be a nice addtion to the 35 and 350hd. I would also like to try to convert my older mg-35 to the T1, but I'm not sure if it's possible.
Anyways, if anyone has any ideas on how to pull the firmware off of the T1, let me know.
Thanks.
teddystacker 02-07-08, 09:34 AM Hi,
The only possible way would be via the Serial bootloader console (You need a special serial cable to access this) - but so far no one has ever done this..
Details on the bootloader console and commands are at the Wiki..

Hi Teddy,
I'm working on the cable right now and will try to get into the box soon. I did look over the info and read alot about boot params, reflashing, etc, but didn't see anything particular about backing the firmware off of the unit. If you know how or could point me to those instructions, I will try to get you guys the T1 firmware asap.
teddystacker 02-08-08, 08:46 AM Thanks for your efforts... but....
Hang on for a bit... I received a email from someone called "Kingpin" yesterday claiming he has dumped the T1 firmware and is going to mail it to me - so before you go to loads of trouble , lets wait a few more days and see if it turns up.. Dont hold ya breath though..

Hi Teddy,
No problem...If you don't get it, let me know. I already got my cable working and was able to get to the boot prom menu.
By the way, here are a few things I discovered about the Mediagate T1.
-There are 2 versions out there that support Tivo. One is the Mediagate T1, from Pogo Electronics and then there is another called the normal "mg-35", but it also has the Tivo support. How I found this out was I purchased one on ebay and it had all the original Pogo packaging, but when I booted it up, it had the MG-35 name on it. I didn't think anything of it, so I continued to use it as normal. Then I booted another one up, straight from Pogo, not ebay, and this one says "T1" on the main menu. Both have the same dark blue background and three menus..Mediagate, Tivo, Network and everything looks identical, except the name through out the menus. Both units say the firmware version is 1.3.1.
-To use the direct Tivo functionality, you must have a HD in it and it must be formatted FAT32. This is weird because you can play .Tivo files in 2 different ways.
1)I was able to use Tivo Desktop on my PC to transfer a show to my PC and then stream it directly to the MG(no HD required). The file is completely untouched and requires you to have the same MAK key stored in the MG which is provided on your Tivo.
or
2)Connect to the Tivo directly so you can see what's on the "Now Playing" list. Select the shows you want and click play. This requires the HD because it can not directly stream the video. It has to copy the video directly to the HD and then you can play the videos locally.
-I did have a few problems at first. It would connect to the Tivo, but I couldn't see any of the shows. I tried another Tivo on my network and it worked fine. Since I didn't have much on the 1st Tivo, I deleted everything and started recording a new show. Once I did that, the mediagate saw the show and I was able to transfer it over. I'm not sure what went wrong, but by clearing some videos off, it was able to see it afterwards.
-Even though the T1 claims it only works on Tivo Series 2 boxes, I tested it on a Tivo S3 and it works fine.
-The 2 versions of the MG with Tivo support that I have do not have the NDAS support. Hopefully someone will be able to take all the work done for the latest firmware and add the Tivo support to make it even better.
So....whenever anyones ready to dive into this, let me know and I'll provide both versions of the firmware.
Attached are the 2 pictures of the different main menus.
Hi Teddy,
Any updates from the guy supplying the T1 firmware?
Any please help me, I had mg-35 for year. I have about 1000 .vob file in 1 directory how can I setup or naming 1-1000 so I can use the remote to play that vob file. I tried so many different way but couldn't get it work..Thanks in Advance..

m_hasper 03-17-08, 05:41 PM Hi guys,
I just bought a freecom network mediaplayer 35 and am very happy with it but I'm having some trouble getting it to work with my network drive pro (NDP) NAS.
As you know the media player uses samba file sharing to access media files over the network and once i created an account 'guest' no password on the NDP the player was able to access the files on the NDP.
Music and pictures now seem to work fine when I listen and view them from the NDP but movies are not working well. When playing an ISO DVD file it freezes after just a few seconds, when playing an xvid AVI it runs for some time, usually a couple of minutes, and then just stops, gives an error message about the media being disconnected, and shows the 'Network mode' screen the player boots up in.
The problem is not in the player, because I can watch these files when the player gets them from my vista machine.
My guess would be that the higher network load from a movie is what is causing the problem, but the NDP should easily be able to handle the load. I have a gigabit switch between it and the player, and a down or upload between my vista machine and the NDP runs at about 65 megabits (on the same switch). That should easily be enough.
I've tried tweaking the samba socket options on the NDP but with no apparent effect.
I've also tried various firmwares: the 1.4.8 the unit shipped with, the last version from freecom (1.4.9), and I'm now currently running the 1.5.1 mod with telnet access.
Do you have any ideas? Thanks for your feedback,
I also have another quick question: on the mediagate wiki faq there's a reference to a method to get access to the network without the usual delay, but I don't understand their procedure, could someone point me in the right direction?
Mark
Hi guys,

MarkSounds like you need to upgrade the software on the "network drive pro" as it is disconnecting. I see it too is running a version of Linux with samba file sharing, and I know some older versions of samba had some bugs that resulted in disconnects.
Teddy
Yes, I have it but when plug the power and push the power buttom the blue LED don't blinking, when I check the regulator on the PCB it turn on and hard disk work.
I recover more time with serial cable when the blue LED blinking.

Teddystacker,
Congratulations on your new role. ( I saw the announcement on the AlTech site http://www.airlinktek.com/english/atboard_view.php?class1=cs&class2=qna&page=1¬ice=y&kind=&uid=1821)
Up to now, many issues have gone unanswered. Hope your presence will help. You may not have all the answers, but at least you will have an easier time with understanding the questions from the english speaking users.

Hi everyone,
I was wandering in AlTech site www. airlinktek. com is down ???
I try to connect to get the original firmware upgrade but sadly the site is not responding. Can I find the last original firmware somewhere else ??
Thank's, I want to put the original one before applying the mod one, safety fist:)
I just went there... it is online.

Thanks Joe for your words of congrats..
All can say is I will do my best to pass on stuff to the Al Tech people - The only thing I can promise is that users will get a much faster response than before.I will not have (nor do I really want to have) any "inside knowledge" on how Al Tech operate. The main thing is that I have a great interest in this stuff , so whatever happens its a Win win for us all..
When making requests people just have to be realistic and understand that any features added cost Al Tech Money , so we are not going to see stuff added that involves lots of work.Having said that , I will do my best to get any of the long standing Bug Issues seen to.

I just confirmed by loading the stock AlTech 1.4.4 upgrade software that it did play my sample DVD ISO over the LAN just fine. I then loaded the stock 1.4.5 upgrade and it stuttered badly playing the same file over the LAN.
The network inefficiency started with version 1.4.5 and it has been bad ever since. This is very interesting as NDAS capability was added in 1.4.4.
I have had this same stuttering problem forever now and thought it must be something to do with my netowork. After reading this post, I reloaded the stock 1.4.4 and my MG-35 now streams video (ISO) again over my network with no problem. Is this something peculiar to just a few people. I can't believe with all these later firmware upgrades that this hasn't been corrected. It must not be happening to most people. Is there something I'm missing?

Congrats on the well deserved position. Have you developed a "Teddy Plan" for "bug" resolution, or has Al Tech even asked you for one? It would be useful to have a list of known "bugs" - a statement from Al Tech which they will or will not address (money), and a target firmware for resolution. I would also be interested in knowing if the MG-35 has a future, or is it done supporting video formats (ie: .mp4 AAC). Knowing is better than the endless wait of hope. Thanks, and best wishes.
teddystacker 03-29-08, 06:12 PM I think the main reason that this is not a "Huge" issue for lots of people is that it only it is only usually a problem on higher bitrate dvds.I guess many people use programs like DVDShrink to compress their dvds , thus reducing the bit rate.I also think due to space issues , many people don't tend stream .iso's or Raw DVDs , and tend to convert to other digital formats such as Divx or xvid.
Anyway, the R&D dept at Al Tech know all about this bug,as I have reported it to them a couple of times, along with a sample .iso
Hopefully they will address it soon..

Thanks for the congrats.
Yes, I have developed a plan for reporting/tracking bugs and also feature requests, and yes it was Al Tech's own idea - we have to give them a bit of a "second chance" here and now I am on board,I promise I will do all I can for the users benefit.I have signed a NDA with them,so can't discuss the methods Of bug/reporting I am using , but lets say I will be doing it in a professional manner.Often a "bug" is not really a bug (sometimes its the user that is at fault for various reasons) , so my plan is that I will only be submitting bugs to them that I myself have confirmed,as I don't want to waste their time, when they could be working on real issues..
Ref "Life left in the 35" , well I can tell you that the 35 is a top selling unit for them , and as you know they have just released the MG-45 , so I think you will see it around for a while yet.
Not too sure about what more video formats they can get it to support , as Codecs are bulit into the Sigma Designs processor. Also, I cant see it ever playing any HD content as the processor just does not have the sheer processing power.
Having said the above, I will try and get some kind of rough "roadmap" from them as to firmware..
Bottom line is that I will just do my best , as I am a user myself, but can only do what I can do..Dont expect things to change overnight, and keep your expectations at the lower end of the Scale :-)

Teddy: Thanks for the quick and informative reply. Safe to say, we are all glad you are in this new position with Al Tech. I am not a dissatisfied MG-35 user - I have 7 of them - wired and wireless - no problems to speak of, since I built a network around their limitations. I have removed all of the hard drives, and deployed a central file server - NDAS is simply too slow and "bottom line useless" for network video file transfers to the embedded hard drives. I recently learned (the hard way) not to update my DVD-to-Xvid/Divx/MPG converters any longer ... they are becoming more sophisticated, while the MG-35 remains static, and will no longer properly display the newly converted video files. If the MG-35 has reached it's "end of life", I wonder if Al Tech would consider a "trade up" program, to exchange ones MG-35 for an MG-xx (for a reasonable fee). And, please, please make them get a real NIC for file transfers ... not this Neanderthal NDAS software 14.4 modem. Again ... best wishes, and go get 'em.
TheKrell 03-29-08, 10:32 PM And I add my congrats as well! :D
Hopefully they will address it soon.
Ah... Do you know something I don't know? They took about a year to fix the AC3-in-MP2 bug, despite the fact that, over that period, I sent them so many example clips I lost count. :(

Thanks for the reply. I knew there must be something here. To many people love this device. I wasn't aware that the ISOs could be converted to another format that would save space and also stream over the network better. Can you give me some advice on the best way to do this? What format are they converted to?
Thanks!

teddystacker 03-30-08, 09:51 PM Hi
You need "Dvd shrink" - See here..
http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/
If you want to "Shrink" some of the newer highly protected dvds , you will also need to use this in conjunction with Slysoft's "Anydvd" to remove the protections.Of cource this is assuming you already own the original dvd..

maleebull 04-02-08, 08:49 AM Hi All
Wondering if someone might be able to help. Flashed my MG35 with the new firmware 1.5.1 New GUI at Christmas everything worked great until yesterday. Now when ever i try to turn it on it tries to restart about every 10 seconds or so. Have disconnected the hard drive and network cable but no good.I was wondering if a serial cable would work seeing it tries to reboot all the time.Any help apreciated . I have read the debricking info on the wiki but was wondering if it would work in my case
Cheers Maleebull
teddystacker 04-02-08, 03:45 PM @Maleebull
My thoughts here are this this MAY be a hardware issue, either with the unit itself or the Power supply..
I very much doubt that flashing firmware would have any effect on this as "software" (ie the firmware) does not just go bad , but hardware does..
If you can get it to stay on long enough, you cqn try doing a full system factory re-set.Details on how todo this are at my MG-35 Yahoo group..

maleebull 04-02-08, 04:11 PM Hi Teddy
Thanks for your quick reply will test the power supply my only concern is it is only 5 months old still under waranty but i am worried they wont warant it because of firmware upgrade help apreciated
maleebull
supraeon 04-03-08, 05:20 AM You're saying it worked with the new firmware for some months?
If you are sure the unit itself is at fault then definitely claim warranty.
If they ask if you've upgraded the firmware then tell them. Otherwise...
Simple question? for who knows this stuff better than me !
The fact:
- I upgrade the mg-35 with the last firmware 1.5.1 alpha after i upgraded it with with the last original firmware from al tech (upgrade was smooth)
- I had some video file 1280 x 720 AC3 that I play earlier whit another firmware with no sound :confused:don't recall the firmware, another firmware upgrade fix the sound :) # (1.46 ou 1.49 ??)
- Now with the 1.5.1 alpha when I try these same file, and i got a 10 to 30 sec of sound with black screen.:(
The firmware did correct some "out of synch" audio & video on some of my video file, but since I got (since yesterday;)) a HD TV, I was very interested to play the HD 1280 x 720 files.
I not a expert with file format/resolution/...
That why some help will be really appreciated (I did some search without luck !)
TheKrell 04-06-08, 03:59 PM I had some video file 1280 x 720 AC3 that I play earlier whit another firmware with no sound I am unaware of any HD videos that can be played by an MG-35, regardless of firmware. It's a matter of the hardware chipset, which in an MG-35 was designed for up to DVD quality, but not anything like 1280X720.
Are you perhaps misremembering what files played before, or getting the MG-35 scaler confused with native HD decoding? It will upscale to HD.
Thank you TheKrell,
Maybe your right, I probably mixe up some file at the time and tinking i had played the HD on the mg35. anyway your post relay help me !!! because i stop searching why it's not working "work as design" !
Thank's again
teddystacker 04-22-08, 03:57 PM As many of you may know. For a long time now there has been a major bug in the MG-35 firmware (this also exists in the MG-45 firmware). This bug was related to the playing of high bitrate .iso's over the network. It would cause playback of both Audio and video to stutter , but was only present in high bitrate iso files. This bug has been present since firmware release 1.4.4 , and indeed many users have stuck with this firmware to ensure that .iso files were streamed correctly.. I can now confirm that Al Tech have fixed this issue - I am beta testing firmware 1.5.2 that plays the test "Sabrina.iso" (supplied by "Mg35 Joe") perfectly over my wired network. As soon as I am able to releaase this firmware (its still being tested and debugged atm) I will post here , hopefully this will be within the next week or so.. I consider this a major milestone in working with Al Tech,as I really never thought that this issue would be fixed.
I will keep you all posted..

Topcatwa 04-24-08, 08:47 PM Hi,
I was told this site could possibly help me. I have had a MediaGate MG-35 for awhile now & has works perfectly with network file share on my PC (WinXPx64-Bit Pro SP2) up until recently when it failed to read the shared hard drive where I have my stored video files. It sees the hard drive but when I go to open it the error message
"Network File Sharing Failed. Please check your network connection or share mode of the PC"
I have checked all the file sharing protocols of my PC including Firewall setting & everything as far as I can see is set up correctly. I am running a Belkin 4 port router & all my LAN connections are working correctly.
I have even tried setting the DHCP setting on the mediagate to 'OFF' & setting the IP address (10.1.1.10) & sub-net (255.255.255.0) manually with the firewall (WinXP Pro SP2) disabled since the existing setup of my router was set to automatically detect in the LAN IP address set-up. I still get the same error message.
I can network my laptop & fileshare the same hard drive without any problems.
I have the latest firmware update installed on the mediagate & it was running fine with this update prior to the problem .
Can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance:confused:
Do you have a login/pw on your laptop and PC? I had a problem once with XP where it would not allow access to a guest account or login with a "blank" password. To allow blank passwords I had to go and change something in the Local Security Policy and allow passwords of length 0.
To allow guest accounts, I manually configured the folders/drive to be accessible via a guest account.
Just a thought
teddystacker 04-25-08, 09:01 AM @Topcatwa
I think this is a file permissions issue - just because you can share with other PC's does not always mean the MG can do the same. Also,it makes a great difference if you are using "Simple File sharing , or "Advanced file sharing" on your PC , setting up permissions can be tricky..
There are a couple of tutorials over at the Al Tech site, that may be able to help you here , depending on your setup and how you want to do this (secure or less secure)

Also here at the MG-35 Wiki is a section on Streaming setup..

Also there are many tips (as well as the firmware with a great looking Royal blue GUI) in the archive at my MG-35 Yahoo group..

Topcatwa 04-25-08, 10:19 AM Thanks for the reply & suggestions, but what get me is that the network was working ok & has been for a couple of years until the other week. I am 'Simple file Sharing' as you suggested teddystacker, so the only other thing I can possibly think of is that a Windows security update file has been downloaded ( I have the updates set automatically) & this is what is stopping the mediagate to file share. The reason I come to this conclusion is that I re-installed a backup image of my PC which was a couple of months old & the network sharing with the mediagate worked until I did a reboot then the sharing error came up again.
Has anyone come across a Windows security update file that would block the Mediagate from seeing shared files?
For Sankar - the answer to your question on P/W is no I do not log in with a password.I did try a guest account but got the same error message.
I'll look at the Airlinktek site & see if they have a solution & keep you posted as to the result.
Cheers.
teddystacker 04-25-08, 06:37 PM Its does not suprise me that this is a Windows Issue , its just a case of tracking down what this "Security Update".
If you manage to track down the ID no. of the update concerned , please let us know,as I am sure many other will have this heppen to them also..
Suggest you "de-install" each update one by one , until the sharing styarts working again , I know this will take some time , but will track down your issue for sure..

Teddy

DRUKMAN 04-27-08, 01:11 AM 1. I understand that the unit can't work as NAS.
2. From the other side it can SMB an external NAS.
Is there a firmware version that will make number 1 work ?
Is it true that number 2 works with all firmware versions ?
3. I understand that working as FTP SERVER is possible with a hacked firmware version from 1.44a according to the pbwiki Q&A section (MG35 usingSambaorFTPlink).
Can someone point me (shortcut or ver number) to one or more firmware versions in the Yahoo group that is known to be stable & includes number 3 ?
I hope my questions make sense...
I will be thankful for every answer.

teddystacker 04-29-08, 10:37 AM As promised last week, today sees the release of new firmwares for both MG-35 and MG-45.
As I already posted , this really is a major release,as they cure the very long standing bug that prevented dvds being streamed over the network correctly.
I planned to release these at the Al Tech website today, but they have a problem with their file server , so I am releasing both here and at my MG-35/MG-45 Yahoo Group, until their server gets fixed..
Hopefully, some of the Techie guys at the MG-35/MG-45 Yahoo group will find the time to add the "New GUI" to these releases soon - so we all don't have to suffer
the "Battleship Gray" Al Tech interface for too long - thanks guys.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:
These are PAL upgrades ,so on NTSC systems you will need to hit the "VIDEO" button on your MG-35/45's
remote control (Pause for 2-3 seconds between each press) in order to cycle thru your units video output modes and thus
see video on screen after applying this update.
MG35/45_1.5.2_ALTECH_ENG_20080428_1223.upgrade Changelog
1)Improved the performance of playing .iso files through network.
2)Improved the navigation function using UP/DOWN keys in Setup.
3)Modified the bug related with icons when selecting or unselecting a file in play list mode0
NB. Item 1) is a MAJOR improvement,as before it was very difficult to stream High bitrate DVD
files over the MG-35/45's wired network without some serious video and audio stutter.
If you aim to stream dvd files over your network we Strongly suggest you upgrade to this firmware.

Q:How Do I Upgrade The firmware On My MG-35/MG-45?
A:
Procedure for upgrading firmware on a MG-35/MG45..
1)Go to Al Tech's Firmware download section and download EXACT the firmware file for your
unit.Firmwares from different models are NOT interchangeable. If the fiile is zipped , you MUST unzip it first.
2)Copy the *.upgrade file to the local hard disk of your MG-35/45.Note: you can upgrade
firmware over the network, but this is NOT really recommended,as if the network drops during the upgrade process it could damage your unit beyond repair.
3)Boot your MG-35/45 and select LOCAL then "Movie".
4)Browse to the firmware *.upgrade file.
5)Hit play on the remote control and follow the prompts to upgrade.
6)DO NOT POWER OFF YOUR UNIT until you are told todo so via a message on the screen.
If power is lost during a firmware upgrade, you unit COULD be damaged beyond repair.
7)When told to do so,Reboot your unit and enjoy your new firmware.
8)A firmware upgrade on the MG35-45 takes less than 3 mins.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Teddy,
I just loaded the new 1.5.2 release on the MG-35 in my den. It works perfectly on the high-bitrate ISO images over my LAN. Even better than the 1.4.4 version I was using previously. (the last prior working version with higher bit-rate ISO images over the lan)
I can detect no stuttering at all on the even highest bit-rate ISO image I have on my LAN based server.
Please extend my thanks to the R&D people at AlTech. This time, they fixed a true bug with networking speed and it makes their product better than some of their competitors. (What a concept)
I can't wait until I get a version with the royal blue graphics and the ability to telnet in once again. The guys on the yahoo group will do their magic and I'll soon be back running as I was.
If nothing else, they might be able to figure out what the AlTech folks did to improve the networking, and improve the custom kernel version they are working on too.

blinky88 04-29-08, 02:33 PM Hi Ted, I managed to download the Zip file v1.5.2 and the installation instructions tonight. Thank you for taking time out to help me, be sure it was very much appreciated. I don't know anything about the MG-35 devise I have just purchased, that said, you certainly have bought me up to speed in a manner I completely understand. You really are an asset to the AVS forum. Thank you, Bob
For those who want to check out their LAN before and after this upgrade, I have one sample ISO image where this is VERY evident. It is from the DVD "Sabrina" where an uncompressed ISO rip of the movie alone is over 7Gig. Apparently, it is a very high bit-rate movie (gspot reports an average of over 11 Mb/s).
Other than this new 1.5.2 version, this following sample is not playable on anything since version 1.4.5 on my MG-35 over the LAN. It has only two or three minor "jitters" on a few scenes on the older 1.4.4.5 firmware, and is very watchable with it over the LAN on the MG-35
Here is a link to a 30 second clip where the stuttering is very evident (http://server1.filecows.com/download/d6iMI6OaZ1U1vKATknhr/sabrina_30_sec_clip.iso) (download is approx 34 Meg. I do not recommend a dial-up-line) The scene is of a water fountain (lots of water droplet detail) transitioning to a panning shot of the top of a garden arbor (lots of vines and branches) with tons of moving detail. Both the sound AND the picture stutter.
Basically, nothing since 1.4.4.5 has been able to play this ISO image to where it is watchable over a LAN connection until the new 1.5.2 versions just announced by Teddy.
Give it a try. I'm very happy that AlTech fixed this. It prevented me from upgrading until now. With the new version 1.5.2, there is no stutter at all playing this sample, not even the tiny ones present in the older and best performing 1.4.4 version.

Does this work for ps3 stuttering issues too
Does this work for ps3 stuttering issues tooAre you running MG-35 firmware on your ps3? Or serving SMB shares from your ps3 to your MG-35?
If no to both questions, odds are it will not help you.

I downloaded the new firmware 1.5.2 for the MG-45 last evening and flashed it before trying to play a ripped copy of Chicago (full DVD9 on my NAS - not in iso form but the actual ifo, vob files).
Unfortunately, I encountered the same problem as before with stuttering after about a few minutes of play. The only thing I could do was to stop play and then it complained that the file was unplayable and then went back to the menu that is presented when the unit is turned on. I navigated back to the file again and fast forwarded to the place where the stuttering occurred and this time it played fine.
Not sure if this was an isolated case - I'll run some more tests over the next few days. Incidentally, the same file plays fine via my computer that is connected by wireless to the NAS (the MG-45 has a wired connection)
