Man, and I JUST bought the 880 last week and here they go and announce a new remote for $100! I like the look of this new one better too.
oldskoolboarder 09-01-05, 06:35 PM To each his own, I prefer the 880/688 look. This new one looks too much like a cell phone. Harmony has now officially been "Logitech'ed". Pricing is good, should keep the product line alive.
Good to see they're still keeping the RF version alive too.
AnthonyP 09-01-05, 11:20 PM looks cool, but the 880 looks cooler
Any idea when the 520 will be released?
newfmp3 09-02-05, 08:09 PM hmmmm, this one looks promising but not enough buttons.
if it's using real batteries, i might take a look at it though. Something simple for the woman.
Real batteries are for the remote extender i am using. The reason why i can't get the 880.
russellps 09-07-05, 03:09 PM With an MSRP of $99, what is the consensus at to wher the price is likely to end up at most internet retailers? I'm trying to decide if its a good idea to hold off on a remote purchase. If the 520 isn't much less than $99, I'm thinking I might as well get the 659 or the 676.
AnthonyP 09-08-05, 01:52 AM Logitech seems to be lowering MRSP prices but a the same time cracking down on cheap prices (compared to MRSP) 99$ is a good price for a Harmony remote, so I would be surprised if there is a big discount
celticpride 09-09-05, 03:45 PM I can't decide between the 520 or the 688 remote ,I hope the 520 works good with the hd-tivo, because thats what i'm leaning towards. BTW their website says it'll go on sale this month on their website and at walmart!
russellps 09-14-05, 02:35 PM FYI, I'm starting to see internet stores listing the 520 at under $70, though no one is offering to ship (backordered as the 520 is yet to be released). Can any industry folks/retailers comment on how realistic this price is?
tokerblue 09-14-05, 03:17 PM We're not allowed to post non-MSRP prices on this site, but I can tell you that most retailers have quite a hefty markup on their remotes.
russellps 09-15-05, 12:04 PM I can tell you that most retailers have quite a hefty markup on their remotes.
That's not surprising. I've been putting off the purchase of a Harmony and it looks like it makes sense to wait for this remote to hit the shelves.
robd1438 09-16-05, 08:41 AM I picked up one these babies yesterday at walmart for $98. They didn't even have them out yet, the guy knew of them and got one from the back for me.
I was considering the 880 until I saw this and the price difference sold me. The PC based setup was easy, I think it took longer for the remote to download the configuration then it did to set it up. So far works like a charm, the activities are great. I am using it for the following devices
Mitsubishi 62725
Yamaha HTR-5860
Scientific Atlanta 8000HD PVR
Sony DVD/VCR combo
I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to spend more then $100 on a remote!

Yup, Logitech's site now shows "Now available at selected Wal Mart stores" and still no report from their "notify me" service.
*drives to WalMart immediately, review later*
DasRaven 09-17-05, 06:00 PM Awesome remote, but small buttons.
The Logitech DB had all the components already. 30 minutes later and I was up and running. This remote has significant WAF and flexibility even at only $98.
The only quible I have is that the buttons are very small and somewhat close together. The volume and channel up/down buttons should be more prominently sized.
I also noticed that the 4 "action" buttons below the keypad are missing despite being in the manual and some online photos. Those would've been nice and would have removed most of my need to scroll the LCD screen to get to other useful functions. They wouldn't be labeled, but I could live with that.

Questions are welcome.
Rocket-123 09-19-05, 01:07 AM Questions are welcome.
What part of the country are you located, where they have it in stock so readily? I checked three regular (not Supercenter) Walmarts in western Chicagoland and they all looked at me with a "Huh?" expression. Each one did an inventory check using walmart.com and of course it's not listed there...yet.

Arizona. I went to several stores in less well to do areas of Phoenix and they had the same response. Then I went to the Supercenter nearer to my home in Mesa in a very wealthy enclave and they had it, locked to the display arm I might add.
So you may want to find a Supercenter in a "better" part of town to find an early release model.
andrew jc 09-19-05, 12:35 PM DasRaven- Are you satisfied with the remotes ability to control the SA 8300? Is your 8300 a DVR as well? The price is right, it pains me to spend money in WalMart. Il guess I'll have to get over it.

Completely satisfied now, but not with the default programming.
I had to customize the skip forward/back buttons to control the PageUp/PageDown feature of the program guide. It was originally 2 pages into the LCD menu.
I also had to reorder the LCD menu items so that the A, B, and C buttons would all appear on the same screen. OOtB, the C button ended up on the second LCD menu screen. That was very annoying while using the DVR.
But now with a little tweaking, it is perfect.
pwrtrader 09-20-05, 03:56 AM Hi all,
Was able to find the 520 at a Walmart in Duarte, CA yesterday (4 left). For those calling around the UPC # on my receipt is 009785503569. As mentioned before, these remotes are locked up in cases with the Video Games etc.
I'm not so sure the regular Walmart folks will see the "value" in the 520 for $100.
Anyways, I'm coming from a 4 year old sony RM-VL900 which was on its last leg due to my fiesty 2 year old son, and the very first thing I noticed was the very small numbers as others have mentioned.
I have ReplayTV and the remote does a good job with the commands. I do wish however, that the Guide and Menu buttons were a bit more pronounced or set aside on their own from the middle. The Menu button is squished between the Info and Prev button and I've already missed it a few times and pressed the others. So I think that will take some getting use to.
On the software side, I had a bit of trouble setting the 520 up. While the software is very complete, it did take me a couple of shots screwing with the Input Modes for my Sony 34XBR2 and my devices. And everytime I would make a change, the software takes forever (3-4 minutes) to upload into the remote. I'm running a P4 3.0 with 1Gig RAM so i don't think the computer is slowing the remote down. This is my first Harmony device so I'm not too sure if other software setups take as long.
For you other Harmony 1st timers, I did find that moving through the software menus when making changes or tweaks was a bit cumbersome. For Instance, if you selected a device to make changes to, once you made the changes, the software didn't give you the option of going back to the top level of the software where the "update remote" button was located. It would kick you back to the page to choose which changes to make even though you just made them. The only selections available where BACK and NEXT. The next button would give you an error message to ask which changes you would like to make (I just did?) Back is the selection to make, although it didn't make sense to me ( I guess I was thinking too much of moving around in a web browser etc).
I also wish any button on the remote would activate the backlight on the remote. Sure, there's a GLOW button but any button would have been a nice feature.
Pretty nitpicky stuff, I just need to get use to the remote. But it does a very nice job of driving my ReplayTV, Sony TV, Sony Receiver, VCR, JVC DVD and my SA8000HD. Performs as advertised and it looks like the WAF might be pretty high with this one.
Now my 2 year old is another story.....I'm sure he'll break this thing in a week.
Sorry for the long winded review.
Regards,
eric

I'm pretty sure the step which converts the commands for the remote is the time hog. The connection runs at USB2.0 speed and making changes from the website is definitely slower than from the software.
Is your tilt sensor set to "on"? My 520 lights up as soon as I pick it up with it on.
pwrtrader 09-20-05, 12:55 PM DasRaven,
Good point about the tilt sensor. I was under the impression from reading some posts over at remotecentral.com that the feature was somehow disabled in the 520. I'll have to go back and check it out. Thanks for the heads up.

robd1438 09-20-05, 07:14 PM i picked mine up at a Walmart in Cromwell, CT. I'm pretty sure I was the first one to buy it there and after a week I am completely satisfied and the wife loves it to. Very easy to use and update. I exchanged my reciever (to a Pioneer 1015), updated the device and activities easily and was working in no time. I'm glad I didn't spend the extra $150 to get the 880
DasRaven 09-21-05, 09:55 AM Just read my copy of October's Money magazine and they have a comparison of several programmable remotes.
They picked the 520 over the Harmony 880 siting essentially identical functionality with real batteries and half price as key benefits.
Me too.
I agree with that statement, but I believe the 520 has no Page UP/Down buttons...not the biggest deal, but important to me...
jsheffield 09-21-05, 08:22 PM A couple of questions:
1. Can anyone other than DasRaven confirm the tilt sensor?
2. What is the number of characters per line, per activity on the LCD display?
Thanks for any information.

I guess as only the 5th largest city in the US, Philadelphia is just too rural to handle this kind of technology!!!
cccamel 09-22-05, 08:57 AM I found the 520 at a fairly small (comparatively) Walmart on the North Shore of Boston. honestly i was shocked they had it, it was just very near work so I stopped in and picked it up last week. It is fantastic!! As far as the page up/down, you can program that in and add it if you wish.
Andrew67 09-22-05, 02:44 PM I guess as only the 5th largest city in the US, Philadelphia is just too rural to handle this kind of technology!!!
Same goes for Atlanta. That's really odd.

1. Can anyone other than DasRaven confirm the tilt sensor?
2. What is the number of characters per line, per activity on the LCD display?
Thanks for any information.
1. I just reconfirmed it, but it is somwhat tricky to trigger the turn-on. Remember the Harmony tilt sensor is fairly specific so as not to turn on the backlights all the time and waste you batteries.
2. I believe there are 15 characters/line and 2 lines per activity. But the word wrapping function of the screen is weird. The line "Watch the DVR" stayed on one line but "Watch TV/Cable" ended up on two lines.
Brian Hampton 09-23-05, 01:11 PM I bought the Harmony 659 for $99 on the walmart website. Looking at the 520, 659 and the 880... I like the 659 best and it was as cheap as any of them.
=B
CBlackmer 09-23-05, 02:18 PM DasRaven,
Watch the DVR = 13 characters
Watch TV/Cable = 14 characters
:D I guess you found the limit, 13 characters per line. Anyway, how is it more complicated to turn on the tilt sensor?
ProudDaddy 09-23-05, 03:31 PM Thumbs up on the 520 and Harmony customer support! It fits my needs/uses perfectly: DLP, MOTO 6412 DVR, DVD, VCR, and XM all through my receiver driven surround. Of course, imo, but I think the 520 looks nicer than the other Harmony remotes and it can do everything my 6 individual remotes did previously.
The tilt sensor issue (does not yet properly work) is being addressed by Harmony and is suppose to be fixed in a new release of the software, hopefully next week according to one Harmony rep.
I have never owned a Harmony before and cannot compare to other models, but a strengthening of the IR would be an improvement. It works adequately, but on occasion will miss a device if you are not in perfect view of device. This could be an issue depending on your room and av equipment configuration. However, I imagine this is a limitation with any non-RF remote.
With 520 & 659 at almost the same price which one do you guys prefer? I am looking at a remote that is easy to use & program & something that can control InFocus 7200 & Anthem AVM30.
Citation4444 09-23-05, 11:25 PM Same goes for Atlanta. That's really odd.
It's available in the greater Atlanta area. I picked mine up today at the Suwanee store. The Cumming store also has it I believe.
TrueDis 09-24-05, 10:43 PM I just scoured the Huntington Beach, CA store and couldn't find it. The electronics department employees were especially useless. Thanks a ton Wal-Mart...

Followed this link. Found 5 520s at a rather remote (pun intended) Wal-Mart in a small town outside of Athens, GA. Bought one. I like it a lot so far, but agree with the poster who commented the buttons were too small. I would add that the font on the LCD is also small and hard to read.
All-in-all, great remote!

DougRuss 09-27-05, 08:46 PM Couldn't find one at a Walmart nearby so I thought I'd just order one( a little cheaper too !) HERE (http://www.provantage.com/buy-220150681-logitech-harmony-remote-controls-520-control-shopping.htm)
It's "Back ordered" but guess I can wait? ;)
hdiesel1977 09-27-05, 11:06 PM Will these remotes work wellwith HTPCs?
scherer326 09-28-05, 12:52 PM want to get one of these also. when will these be available for purchase besides going to walmart store, i.e. the internet. I live in the city and there are no walmarts near by.
robtwilk 09-29-05, 12:31 AM Hey all - I bought my 520 at a Walmart in Las Vegas. I had to go to two stores before I found one (plus I tried a store in San Jose, CA). Most workers just look at you like you're crazy. "What do you mean a $100 remote - we don't carry stuff that expensive", "All our remotes are over there on the hooks". I told them it was expensive and most likely locked up.
The store that had them in stock, also had some smarter than normal sales people. They clued into what I was asking for and led me right to the locked door. I got one then decided to take two - just cause it might be a while before I found some more.
I own a Harmony 880, so I can add some comments. I love my 880 in many ways. The rechargeable batteries are awesome - I own a Kameleon that eats batteries every week or two. The tilt sensor is a little weak and the transport buttons are a little low. The 880 is much faster than the 520 when updating via USB. I was very annoyed with this aspect.
I actually prefer the setup on the 880. The new simple programming screens are for total beginners and slowed down my progress. The 520 works very well when programmed and it does a lot for $100. The buttons on the 520 are very squishy and give little tactile response. The 880 buttons are not perfect and require pushing more than once - specially with TiVo, but they are much better than the 520.
There are more programming options with the 880. I can't get rid of the A, B, C, PageUp and PageDown on all activity screens on the 520 (although I only spent 15 minutes programming 8 devices and 5 activities). The 880 has an online screen that lets you control what shows up on those screens. I don't want my TiVo "List" button on page 2, when there's no reason it can't be on page one.
One more thing, I had to remove the 880 software to install the 520 software. The programming is not compatible between the two.
Anyway, for $100 you can't beat the 520.
I own a $1,000 ProntoPro and it's cool, but so much more work than these new Logitech remotes.
S1DIMMER 09-29-05, 07:56 AM I'm interested also in the 520. Been looking at the 880 and didn't really want to spend that much for a remote. Can anyone please comment if the 520 can be used effectively with Windows Media Center on an HTPC? Thanks.
robtwilk,
Thanks for the quick review! Which Walmart in Vegas did you find the 520s at? Thanks!
liferules 09-29-05, 12:59 PM want to get one of these also. when will these be available for purchase besides going to walmart store, i.e. the internet. I live in the city and there are no walmarts near by.
I've already seen them for sale on the internet. Just froogle it... OTOH, many are "backordered"...
Hey all - I bought my 520 at a Walmart in Las Vegas. .
I'm in vegas too . I have called several walmarts but cant locate one that has it , but I'm not too convinced that these minimum wage helpers know anything about whats available. The logitech website lists 3 vegas stores that has this remote, south, central, and sw2. I cant figure out the actual locations as the yellow pages list store numbers not geographical info. I did finally find out that sw2 is the supercenter on W. Fort Apache which is not too far from where I live, but they are remodeling their electronics dept and the place is an absolute mess. I asked one of the electronic guys about it and he was clueless. I called back later to talk to a manager, but that was a complete waste of time too!
what store did you get yours and were there any left after you bought your two?
S1DIMMER 09-29-05, 10:54 PM Are any of you using Media Center 2005 with this remote. The next remote I buy must work with media center so I can get back on one remote. My current remote doesn't have enough memory to store all the learned codes I need.

I got my 520 at the Sterling, VA Walmart last night and I saw a couple left.
As for the Media Center I think the remote supports it since it does have that as an option.

This can be done on the 520. The screens for my "Watch DVR" activity go like this:
Page 1 - A, B, C, List
Page 2 - PIPOn/Off, PIPSwap, PIPCh+, PIPCh-
Page 3 - PageUp, PageDown, Settings, Favorites
I don't think this deep customization is available through the software, but via the online configuration site.
I also noticed that the 4 "action" buttons below the keypad are missing despite being in the manual and some online photos. Those would've been nice and would have removed most of my need to scroll the LCD screen to get to other useful functions. They wouldn't be labeled, but I could live with that.

Questions are welcome.
I finally got mine.. this is my first (and hopefully my last) universal remote. I'm still testing it out. My package included an installation guide and CD , but no actual manual. Did you get a written manual in your package or is there a downloadable PDF manual online . I couldn't find one on Logitechs site. thanks.
DasRaven 10-01-05, 11:04 AM Did you get a written manual in your package or is there a downloadable PDF manual online . I couldn't find one on Logitechs site. thanks.
No manual, I guess they figure anyone in the market for a USB programmable remote will read the online guides.
RadYOacTve 10-01-05, 11:40 AM My 880 did not come with a manual either. Once you start programming it, you really won't need it.
TangledThorns 10-01-05, 01:17 PM No manual, I guess they figure anyone in the market for a USB programmable remote will read the online guides.
That does make sense.
Well, I guess I can live without a written reference guide, but where specifically can I find info about things like the "tilt sensor" that some of you have mentioned?
Also, I seem to be having problems with the Logitech'Harmony website and/or software in relationship to my cable modem/wireless router internet connection. Several times now, (but not ALL the time) after making various adjustments in the setup screens and clicking on the "done" button, nothing happens and I "timeout". But the really weird thing is that my entire internet connection quits working for ANY site. The only way I can resume my internet connection is to reset my router. I have tried using both my desktop which connects through the router using ethernet passthrough and my laptop which uses 802.11b wireless router to connect. This loss of internet happens on both.
After router reboot is finished, all is well again, but , of course, none of my changes for the remote took hold as I could not complete the process. There must be some sort of conflict between the Harmony software and my wireless router (netgear). My next step is to disconnect the router and re-establish a direct ethernet connection between my desktop and the cable modem to actually see if my router is the one actually causing the conflict. Mabey I'm not meant to have this remote ?
Never mind previous post....things are working better now and I have found the manual online. thanks anyway

Despite the fact that Harmony has a remote (the 880 if I recall) specifically designed for MediaCenter, all their remotes support it. Curiously, though, when I tried to set my 520 up it asked for the make and model of my PC, like it would any other component. It shouldn't matter. I have a homebuilt and was stopped in my tracks by this questioning (it won't let you go through the set up without this info.) I imagine I could just pick any name (like Dell or HP) and any MediaCenter model and it would work but I wasn't in a hurry so I'll try that later.

Thanks Disaster, keep us posted. I would think any brand and media center model should work.
Picked one of these up at the w/end (Walmart in Piscataway NJ). The display rack was empty but I asked a sls asst and he had put the last one at the back of a locked cabinet because people were trying to steal them!
This thing is awesome. My kids can now watch videos, DVDs and cable TV without having to know how to switch inputs and without juggling three different remotes.
Tip for anyone with a combo DVD/VCR (which has separate codes to control the playback of each device): first set up two different devices to represent the DVD and the VCR, then you can map the right functions to the playback controls for each one. In my case by default it set up both activities and devices with DVD controls.
And regarding the number of characters per line in the display, it's a variable font...
I just got off the phone with logitech. I was able to order a 520 by phone with my credit card, they said it will ship on Thursday.
Every time I have gone online to reprogram the 520, after completely finishing the update process, the main screen still indicates that my settings have changed and it asks me if I want to "update". Makes me think that something didn't take hold from the update I just did, but when I check, everything is same as it was.

It seems like just entering the website is enough to make the software think you made a change.
Can anyone provide feedback on the feel of the buttons.
Are they too small?
Too close together?
Hard plastic or rubbery?
Just general feeling of how it feels in your hand. I'll likely be buying online so I won't get to look at one first.
Also, I noticed the 520 does not have a "media" button that most of the other models have. What was the media button for and is the omission something to worry about?
Thanks
kcmedic 11-02-05, 02:14 PM After playing with the 520 for a few days here's what I think.
-fewer buttons than others
-buttons feel "squishy"-not a lot of feedback
-no "Media" button (or function). This is a big one for me as I have a 400 dvd changer and would like to program in my disc titles. The setup has a screen for entering media titles, but Logitech support informed me it is a bug and that screen is going to be removed from the setup.
Overall I do like the remote, but the media list function is something I really want. If you don't need that, this is a great remote for the money.
I think I will return my 520 for the 688.
Oh, and SMP01, the buttons are a little too close together (not a big deal) but the rubbery, squishy buttons are kind of a pain (usually takes a couple presses)
-Ty
personally, I like the squishy buttons better than the hard ones (channel up/dn, etc)... the hard ones make a clicking noise that is a bit irritating at times. the squishy ones are silent. I changed the channel up /dn functions to the the * & e buttons at the bottom. Its a better feel for me in my hands for channel surfing and , like I said, no clicking noise. What I don't understand is why they change the remote for the USA..the Euro version has additional row of buttons at the bottom that would be nice for dedicated A B C buttons.
mikea28 11-03-05, 05:33 PM personally, I like the squishy buttons better than the hard ones (channel up/dn, etc)... the hard ones make a clicking noise that is a bit irritating at times. the squishy ones are silent. I changed the channel up /dn functions to the the * & e buttons at the bottom. Its a better feel for me in my hands for channel surfing and , like I said, no clicking noise. What I don't understand is why they change the remote for the USA..the Euro version has additional row of buttons at the bottom that would be nice for dedicated A B C buttons.
amen...somebody import these from europe...
oh, and i'm surprised remote manufacturers haven't started adding these buttons yet since the vast majority of digital cable systems are using them now (for better or for worse)
520 owners -
I'm looking for a remote for my new system and the $100 price point of this 520 with the stated functionality looks like a pretty good buy. I especially like the Harmony style of Activity based buttons. I've never had a harmony before so I'm curious about how extensive the online programming tool can be. For example lets say my activity is to watch a dvd which would need this: mute tv volume, change tv mode to cinema, power on receiver, select receiver dvd input, power on dvd player, play dvd
can all of that be stringed into one button press with this remote?
liferules 11-06-05, 07:15 PM Elo, go online yourself and create a Harmony profile with your current equipment and find out how fine tuned you can get. It is very informative to do this prior to a purchase. This is what I did and it sealed the deal.
Good luck.
Hmm, the Harmony test drive doesn't have the 520 as an option to use, while using one of the other remotes it doesn't look like you can add something like changing the video mode from game to cinema into your desired activity. Are harmony owners able to do this? I tried logging in through the regular app but it doesn't let me past the connecting to remote stage.
It's still impressive nonetheless, I will have to give it consideration. I really do like the look of the 520 and it's ability to change inputs.
Yes, the Harmony can do this. You can add whatever commands you like to the begining or end of an activity.
You can also program in any necessary command "delays". It has speed settings for 4 different areas. I had to program in a longer delay for input selection since it takes my tv so long to boot up. Before doing that I had trouble getting the right input upon startup.
Thanks for the comments czzer and gvc. I think I'm going to go with the 520 now as it looks to be able to do everything I need and is reasonable is $100. Plus I think it looks pretty good for a remote...now I know I shouldn't base my remote decision on looks but this guy(gal?) is going to be sitting on the coffee table all the time so that is a pretty big factor. Thanks again! :)
pfilippone 11-11-05, 03:12 PM I was in the market for a good universal remote shortly after the Harmony 520 came out.
I was attracted by the sleek look of the 520. The 520 is a new look and shape for the Harmony line, and no doubt the design was influenced by the Logitech folks. [As some of you may know, Logitech acquired the company that makes the Harmony remotes a while ago.]
So I called a few WalMarts in my area looking for the 520, and sure enough these people never heard if it, for all I know they might have had them right in front of their faces and not know it.
Rather than wait, I gave in and purchased the 520 at Walmart.com for $99 plus tax & shipping.
So far I am very pleased with it. I agree some of the buttons could be spaced farther apart and have better 'feedback' when pushed. This is especially true of the number buttons.
Question: What are the A, B, C buttons supposed to do?
(They show up in the LCD display).
Well i got my harmony 525 today (european 520).
I noticed that in box it says 15 devices when harmony website says 12 ;) Well after basic setup it seems to work just fine. it looks great. Remote is not so good to use with 1 hand (too long?). I am quite happy anyways with it. Atleast website software is quite good - bit much wizards with questions (yes i am sure i want to setup this manually) - (didnt use much that pc based one).
bigshow 11-14-05, 11:32 PM i picked up the 520 today...f'n sweet! my sony 5 cd/dvd changer didnt have the ability to select discs 1-5 manually..had to disc skip thru them - finally selecting the disc i want. controlling Westy37, sony reciever, sony cd/dvd changer, and motorola HD box - flawlessly. even programmed it to go thru a series of steps to fix an issue with the motorola unit when it crops up...press a button and bunch of BS is darn near instantly done...bringing the motorola back to life (cable company said they are having major issues with the model they are issuing and are working to resolve it). programming it was a breeze and dare i say fun?
Ok, I purchased my Harmony 520 from Target online for the MSRP of $99. My general summary is the remote is fantastic. Specifics are as follows:
1) The online database is about as comprehensive as could be imagined. They had the code for my Panasonic DVD A120 (circa 1999), Marantz SR7000 reveicer (circa 2001), my Nakamichi MB-8 (circa 2000?), my Panny 8UK (circa Aug 2005) and my Moto DCT6412 Series III cablebox/HD DVR (circa last month). All worked very well. However, you will need to tweak to meet your specific needs.
2) The installation software is a little clumsy. When it was downloading updates into the remote from the desktop software , I would often get the "blue screen of death". It doesn't make much sense considering the computer otherwise operates perfectly. However, a work around was easy - I simply downloaded the update from the website. They do a nice intergration between the web and the computer software (BTW, you need to have installed the software to be able to update the remote from the website).
3) Macros - great. Easy to promgram.
4) Adjustments - blows. Completely blows. The software make it so very difficult to find the tools to make the adjustments (I am not talking about assigning different buttons, I am talking about adjusting macros and manually entering IR codes). You will muddle through this, it's just frustrating at times. NOTE: IF YOU THINK YOU CAN AVOID THIS BY GETTING A DIFFERENT LOGITECH MODEL, THINK AGAIN. They all use the same software, so you will encounter this problem with all models.
OVERALL: Great, would buy it again in an instant. True test came in the form of a thumbs up from the wife who hated the old universal remote. Overall rating 8.75/10
slick316 11-16-05, 07:48 PM I bought the 520 yesterday from Wal-Mart, $99, last one left.
I was skeptical at first, with the stuff I am using, I thought it wouldn't pick up on some of it, it did!
Initial setup was simple and easy. Picked my components, and it found them, even my Roku Soundbridge Music Streamer, I was sold at that point.
Setting up activities was a pain, but I got the hang of it. It kept adding in components to the activities without asking me. For example, for play digital music, I wanted it to turn my TV off, turn the Roku on, turn the Halo P3 on to AUX. It did some of that, but instead of turning off my TV, it changed the source to Video 4 and turned my DVD player on. I couldnt find a way to change it, so I deleted the activity and added it again, this time it worked fine.
I was also surprised to find that it has the XBOX 360 remote codes in the database already. I tought I would setup a "play game" activity for when the 360 arrives. When I went to set it up, it asked which console, so I put in 360, and it found it, input the codes in the remote and everything, I thought that was cool.
I really like this remote. The internet interface is a little hard to use, but you get used to it. It can be customized a good bit, so I am glad about that, and it has just about EVERY device in its database, its really nice.
$100 well spent, this thing is replacing 5 remotes for me with full functionality (add in a nice design and backlit buttons, its perfect for the simple user).
fyrfyter 11-20-05, 09:32 AM What website can you go to lookup and see if the Harmony 520 has the codes for your equipment? I just got DirecTv, and have a D11 receiver and also an R10 DVR, and I want to be sure it works with those. I would like to get several remotes if they work well, one for the family room, and one for the bedroom setup. Thanks for any info you can provide.
liferules 11-20-05, 01:17 PM The logitech harmony website. It allows you to create an ID and "test drive" it by inputting your equipment and tailoring the activities.
fyrfyter 11-20-05, 05:43 PM Found the info I was looking for for my DVR R10 and receiver D11-500. Pretty neat. It says it will also control my ceiling fan !!!
hsinnott 11-21-05, 02:46 AM I just got the Harmony 520- I actually had a Harmony 659 and decided to change it because of the sleek looks of the 520. They're both are pretty similar and believe me, anything is better than having several remotes cluttering up the place!
I am disappointed by some things on the 520 though. The 2 most used buttons on probably any remote- the Volume and the Channel up/down.....the 659 model is better than the 520. On the 520 they are smooth, slim and hard to find in the dark...and the worst thing is they have a horrible 'click' to them. In addition they are hard to press and will give you sore fingers.
On the plus side, the 520 is very cool looking whereas the 659 looks like a $20 remote. I also like on the 520 you can turn the backlighting on and off. On the 659 remote the light would only stay on a few seconds before turning off again- often before you had finished what you were trying to do.
To conclude, I like the 520 except for the horrible clicking and hard to press buttons- I'd advise anyone thinking of buying to try to test drive one first. The 520 is also a different shape that the 659 which is a 'peanut' shape- and more ergonomic than the 520.
Michaelina2 11-21-05, 09:48 AM I acquired the Harmony 520 about a week ago. I did not notice the 'key click' issue until mentioned in hsinnott's comments, above. I like feeling a subtle click, so for me it's not an issue. I guess, like any new device, it takes some time to become acquainted with its personality & logic.
Once I decided to accept the discipline of the 520's programming instructions plus some trial and error, I found fitting the various devices into 'activities' to be quite easy. I was also surprised to discover that the device data base contained the key configuration for my 1986 Onkyo SV-7M.
All in all, I give the 520 a '5 star' rating as it really works great for me. If I discover any problems down the way, I'll let you know.
Enjoy...
kmartin173 11-21-05, 04:20 PM I can't say I'm as happy as most seem to be, I actually like my old One-for-All better, but the buttons always quit working on those things after a while. Its taken a lot of trial and error to get it to do exactly what I want. The buttons controlling the LCD screen are hard to use and the activities will work one time but not the next.
I do like the fact that eventually I got it to do everything that I wanted it to do.

I agree about the clicking.. if you do a lot of channel surfing it can be pretty annoying at times. Thats why I programmed the * and # soft buttons to handle the channel up/down commands. I also programmed the hard channel buttons to the page up/down dvr command.
hsinnott 11-21-05, 07:56 PM As per my post yesterday, the Harmony 520 has horrible buttons for Volume and Channel up/down.....you'll definetely have to program other buttons for these functions- in addition to being hard to press and causing CTD's, the volume button in particular seems very unresponsive.
Sorry for negative feedback- like I said before, its a helluva lot better than having to fumble thru 3-4 remotes in the dark- but personally, having owned a Harmony 659 before, and tested other Harmony remotes, I think you owe it to yourself to decide carefully which Harmony you opt for.
Oher negatives include the new software which can be trickier than the old software. Also, anyone familiar with the Sony PSP and the smudge problem caused by the high gloss finish on the unit will encounter the same problem with the 520- its highly polished black surfaces are terribly prone to fingerprints and smudges.
Can somebody email me a copy of the manual, I am having trouble accessing it online. I am trying to see if it meets my needs as I may buy it for my inlaws as a gift.
I know there are only 4 lcd buttons, but are there multiple screens (like the Universal Remote Control MX series) i.e. the 4 lcd buttons can be each programmed for multiple functions.
Thanks
Foxbat121 11-22-05, 03:04 PM Just bought the 520's cousin, Harmony for Xbox 360, from BestBuy. It looks a lot like 520 with all silver face plate and one row of extra buttons in the middle and one row of extra buttons on the bottom. Hopefully it will worth the extra $30 over 520 for 8 extra buttons because I don't have a XBox 360 :D

Yes but is it worth $55 more than the 520?

Besides for $50 more than the 360 you can get an 880.
Foxbat121 11-22-05, 04:21 PM I'm sure some one will sell this one for cheaper than MSRP. It is not fair to compare MSRP to sell price or internet price.
FYI, I don't like 880 at all.
Still testing this one out. I'm not sure I'll keep it.

Please report if ALL the extra buttons are custom programmable. thanks. I dont have an Xbox and dont plan to get one either.
Foxbat121 11-22-05, 08:02 PM Yes, all the extra buttons are customizable. And they come really handy to assign those DVR buttons. In fact, two of the X Box buttons already have secondary label as Guide and Live TV.
I like the color schema of the XBox 360 one better than stock 520. It's actually silve in place of black on 520 and white on the bottom half of the remote. The back lighting is green instead of 520's blue. After being bathed in a giantic blue light of my LCD TV every night, I'm really hate anything with blue light.
Hopefully, somewhere this remote will be selling for less than MSRP, probably found among various XBox 360 accessories.
hsinnott 11-22-05, 11:47 PM As mentioned in another post, the 520 has a similar finish like the Sony PSP- impossible to keep it from getting smudged and fingerprints all over the thing- I tried a microfiber cloth but the black rubber buttons are so close together its hard to get in between them. I then tried a cotton bud and found another thing I dislike about this remote- the black rubber buttons seem to attract dust very easily. They are made from a type of "sticky" rubber and once dirt gets on there the only way to get it off is to scrape it!
When I'm on the subject of the rubber buttons- just wait till you try pressing one in the middle- the 'Menu" button for example- you practically have to use the very tip of your finger nail to activate it- and thats assuming you have thin fingers.
I've complained in another post about the Vol. Up/Down and Channel Up/Down buttons- the "Glow" button positioned between them I'm also having a hard time with as I keep pressing the arrow down key which is right above it instead.
Well its still one of the coolest looking remotes out there but I'm finding more things I dislike about it every day- I'm almost missing my old 659 Harmony.
The positioning and the feel of many of the buttons on the Harmony 520 is very disappointing.
landrvr1 11-23-05, 10:52 AM Yup, it's a love hate relationship.
First off, this remote is exactly what I needed. I first picked up the 880, after searching and not finding the 520. Yikes. $250 was simply too much money, and after a day the guilt finally took over and I returned the remote. That was after, of course, I finally tracked down a Walmart that had the 520.
The 520 is incredibly similar in function to the 880, at a fraction of the price. For $250, the 880 needed to impress a whole lot more than what it did. The plastic body and buttons feel cheap - like a generic $20 remote. And the color screen? Oh where do I begin. For $250 I'm expecting iPod color screen quality. The resolution is horrible. Horrible. When I found that I couldn't even customize the icons for Activities, that was the last straw. For $250, I'd better be able to put any pic I want for the 'Play a DVD' activity. Bah. The 520's main backlit screen and backlit buttons, while still an awkward dark blue, are fairly easy to read. The backlight on the 880s buttons were unreadable.
The hate part of the 520 is in the setup and programming software. I'm going to say it right now:
Logitech needs to take the ENTIRE setup and programming interface and dump them in the trash. Right now. Don't even think about it, just do it. The whole thing is that bad.
First off, the software versions are wacky. With the 880 I received ver 4.x something. The website had a PREVIOUS version!? When I bought the 520, I get ver 5 - which finally worked to an almost acceptable degree. The earlier software versions did all the setup and programming entirely within Internet Explorer. Ver5 was a standalone program that connected to the Web. It was simpler and more reliable to use. Logitech: get your sh*t together with the versions. At the very least, you should have the latest on your website.
Programming phase simply needs to be reinvented. It's cumbersome and stupid to the point of disbelief. In fact, once you are finished programming something - it doesn't matter what - you are NEVER taken back to the main menu automatically. C'mon. That's so basic even a retard like me would know to incorporate that function. Both ver4 and 5 suffer from this.
The updating of the remote - after you adjust and tweak settings - is so hit or miss that at times you will wonder if anything is actually happening. In ver4 of the software it was positively hopeless. The Harmony Remote Software dialog box (of which there is a picture on the web when you are trying to update your remote) would NEVER automatically open up. Just wouldn't do it. I always had to manually download and THAT my friends is a pain in the a$$. Oftentimes I'd have to try again and again. Ver5 of the software seems to improve matters somewhat. Out of 5 update remote attempts last night, only ONE of those actually did it automatically without me fiddling. Logitech, that is bad news.
The programming of buttons and activities and such is also in need of a complete redesign. God, it's unbelievable bad. Logitech, here's a suggestion:
Have a graphic of the remote pictured at the start page. Have dialog boxes with arrows pointing to various parts of the remote (activies button, devices button, etc). At each dialog box, have drop down menus for what you wish to do. You could have menus within menus, but a graphic of the remote should always be present - and clear indicators of what you are doing should be visible. And, of course, you should always be taken back to a home screen once you are finished.
At first I thought these problems were my inability to comprehend this stuff. Then I searched the net and......oh my. Lots and lots and lots of people have been bitching about this software and rightfully so.
Logitech, you have some great remotes. Now take a bit of time and seriously rethink your software...
sterno3 11-27-05, 01:03 PM Just thought I would add my $.02
I bought this remote about a week ago at Sears (thanks ressom) for less than $80 with tax (I did an instore pickup, which was remarkably slick at sears btw). My setup includes a myHD mdp-130, a zeinth VCR, a Sanyo HDTV, and an odd AMW dvd (home theater in a box).
A little background. I had previously bought and returned the harmony 768 from amazon. The price was right (~$60), but the remote wasn't. I didn't like the 'activity based' concept, and after fighting with it for a week, I realized it just wasn't a good fit. There weren't enough buttons, and those that were there just didn't do what I needed them too. Not to mention the 'web based' software was the biggest pain in the butt I had ever seen. It didn't make any sense, and it took FOREVER to update the remote, even for the smallest change to configuration.
When I started using the 520 & its software, it was like a breath of fresh air. The setup was intuative from the get go, the software was easy to use, and it had the base setup for all my devices (I had to relearn my dvd player's, but that was easy too). In watch PVR device mode, it knew to combine the MDP & TV, and it did a really good job of guessing what buttons to assign, and put into the customized LCD menu.
Once I got to tweaking, I realized the power of the software. It can do what you want it too. Granted, it is a 'wizard' based software for the most part, which normally just gets in the way for tweakers, but once I figured out the menus & where things were, it was a breeze. The speed of updating the remote (it just updates things that have changed), is MUCH MUCH better than the old software.
I give this remote a HUGE thumbs up especially for the price I got it at. I told myself when I bought it that I was just going to test drive and if I liked it i would ask for it for christmas, but I am definatly not taking this one back!
dirk1843 11-27-05, 10:40 PM Has anyone gone from using RadioShack 15-1994/2116 to using the 520?? I am not a power user, never gone JP6, but love those remotes.
Foxbat121 11-28-05, 09:58 AM I had two of those RS remotes. Never get time to try JP1 trick on them although that's one of the reasons I bought them. With any Harmony remote, you save the time and agony try to figure out the programming and infra red commands for your devices with additional $$. Reprogramming the entire remote to your like is no-brainer for Harmony.
The main difference is Harmony remotes are activity based and it controls all your device includes power on/off and select inputs at one button click. RS remotes are, like all traditional remotes, device based. You have to individually turn on/off each devices and select correct inputs for each. That's a lot of button clicks for a typical HT with TV, DVD player, Receiver and an HD STB.
There are times where device based remote works better but in general activity based remote is much easier for family members to use your complex HT system.
Just a heads up, NCIX has this remote for super cheap, but here is the great thing, Staples just strarted carrying it here in Canada, and they pricematch >;) Picked up two of them tonight for me and a buddy, under $160 Cdn with taxes in. Don't think I have broke any rules here, but if I have let me know. Anyways AWSOME DEAL, and I have already thanked the wife for the Early X-mas Present >;)
bbig119 12-01-05, 12:37 AM Has anyone tried to program this remote to control an HTPC?
I want a remote with macro functions so that it can do what it needs to do with my TV and amp, but my HTPC is my DVD player, TIVO, music player, etc. I know the remote is capable of it, but am worried that the software might not allow me to tweak it under the hood like I want.

This is similar to my DVD player (it is a AM/FM reciever, DVD player, CD player & audio decoder for my HTPC). You can add 1 'device' to multiple 'activities' (FYI--you can also add multiple devices to 1 activity).
If I understand you correctly, what you would want to do in your situation is setup an activity for each of the things you mentioned ('watch dvd', 'watch PVR' (TIVO), 'listen to music'). In fact after you setup your devices, the initial wizard will walk you through the setup of most of these activites automagically. You can then add the devices you want to each activity.
As far as customization for an activity, there are really 2 parts to it.
The first part is the power-on of an activity. The wizard will ask what needs to be turned on, which input to turn it to, etc.
The second part is that in the activity setup, you customize the remote's hard & soft buttons (it can be a mix of any of the activities devices). Example: when in the PVR activity you can have the channel up/down control your HTPC's PVR channels, and the Volume up/down can control your reciever or TV's volume.
I am not sure what you mean exactly by tinker under the hood/macros. In activity mode, you can have each device perform one command per hard or soft button (example: pressing the mute hard button can issue the mute command for your PVR & your TV). The command performed is limited only to the setup of the device. Most device's commands are in the harmony Database already, but you can overwrite (relearn) commands or add new commands. The default commands are those that are in the database for that particular model already, plus any common commands based on your generic device type.
I have not done any macros (multiple IR codes) for a device command. I am not even sure if it is possible (I haven't needed it). The main place I can see a need for a macro is when you power on activity, but with the activity based options of this remote, that's already taken care of for you (via a wizard). There is a learn raw option under custom in 'learn IR Commands' for devices. I haven't found a view XML or similar export, the 768 I trialed would allow you to tinker directly with the XML, but I don't really think I need that exposed to me (yet).
If you give a specific example of what you want to do ("in watch PVR activity, when I press the volume down button, the lights should dim and the popcorn popper should start"), I may be able to help more. Sorry for the lengthy post, hope it helps.
sterno3 12-01-05, 02:54 AM Has anyone tried to program this remote to control an HTPC?

One last add, I have started to program it to control my HTPC. I don't have a generic IR reciever or remote for my PC, but I do have a myHD capture card. The myHD came with an IR reciever and myIRC software (it controls the scheduling & passes commands to the myHD software). AIUI, the scope of this remote & reciever was intended to control the myHD & the myHD only.
HOWEVER, with some help (thanks suntan), I figured out how to disable the IR reciever in myIRC, and have girder listen to the IR receiver. Girder then passes the commands to myIRC. In theory, this would allow me to teach girder to recognize some IR commands (generated by the 520) and in turn do PC based actions (Hibernate, kick off scripts, open applications). I have not proven this out yet, because I need fresh unique IR codes that none of my other devices use. In order to do this I guess I could use an old unused remote to teach the 520 & then gider in turn.
bbig119 12-01-05, 12:08 PM Thanks sterno3,
Ok, I think we're talking on the same page. So I am planning on using Girder to intercept signals from whatever remote I choose to use and pass necessary signals to programs and do what I want. What I'm a little worried about though with the Harmony remotes is that you need to use their setup software and go to a database to configure the remote and ir signals that the remote uses. Well my HTPC and girder can use any ir signal(except the ones used to control my TV and amp). So my question, is how do people configure their harmony remotes, customize them essentially to pass their signals to girder, which in turn will do anything necessary on the PC side of things.
I suppose the work around is to tell the harmony you have a device for TIVO, which you really don't have, and then configure those signals that the remote passes to the PC in girder to control necessary software. I can do the same for some DVD player, and its respective remote. But what about more general things, such as interacting with the operating system, or some default buttons to start my dvd player or PVR software, or whatever else I want. I guess I could hijack another device and turn those signals to do what I want, but is there a way to work in the harmony software to put custom labels on the LCD and the like?
I know gider will accept any remote assuming the ir receiver recognizes the signal. The reason why I'm considering a harmony or other high end remote is mainly for macros where I'm able to hit 'TV' which will correspond to watching TV using my TV tuner and select the appropriate inputs on the TV and amp. If I hit 'PCR', or 'HTPC' or something like that, it'll adjust the tv and amp inputs appropriately, then start sending necessary signals to girder. Seems simple, and I might be making this more complicated than it really is, but before I go dropping $80+ bucks on a remote(which may be difficult to return if I don't like it), I want to make sure I'm getting something that will do everything I want it to do now, and be expandable to do more if the need develops in the future.
sterno3 12-01-05, 02:24 PM Thanks sterno3,
Ok, I think we're talking on the same page.
What I have done is add a device under the category of PC (or computer...something like that). It asks for a company & model #. Mine is a Compaq SR1200NX, and it found it in its database. Because this model is just a pc it didn't have any actual codes assigned to the commands. It then uses the default commands for that 'type' of a device. Basically it is a blank slate of commands which you can teach IR commands to.
I suppose the work around is to tell the harmony you have a device for TIVO, which you really don't have, and then configure those signals that the remote passes to the PC in girder to control necessary software.Yep, that or use an outdated remote that you don't use. Either way you just have to hope there is no overlap in commands with the existing devices I can do the same for some DVD player, and its respective remote. But what about more general things, such as interacting with the operating system, or some default buttons to start my dvd player or PVR software, or whatever else I want. I guess I could hijack another device and turn those signals to do what I want, but is there a way to work in the harmony software to put custom labels on the LCD and the like?Yes, when you are setting up the 'blank slate', you are matching up hard & soft buttons to commands from your IR source (or the database). When I refer to soft buttons, I mean the LCD commands which appear in the screen 4 at a time and you can scroll back and forth from screen to screen. The buttons are not actually soft, but the labels are. The way you set up the device is you can create custom commands (ie: start popcorn), and assign them to either the soft button or replace a hard button's command.
I can totally understand. I went through the same thing (bought & returned the 768), and I truly intended this purchase as a trial period to see if I liked it. Glad to help if you have any more questions.
bbig119 12-01-05, 03:29 PM Thanks sterno3,
I'm still torn about whether to get a harmony or URC MX-700. Right now I might go with a harmony since I beleive I can get it from a retailer that has a reasonable return policy. I won't give the MX-700 a fair shot, but I'd rather not be stuck with a $140+ dollar remote that isnt' for me, although it sounds like its a great device.
I'll hit you up with questions if anymore arise, but it sounds like the 520 will be able to control my HTPC fully without too much torment.

Not to mention the 520 is a much sexier remote. Someone in another review site compared the weight & feeling of it in your hand to a throwing knife. I agree, it feels great, no matter which keys you're pressing. The directional key is a little too 'clicky' for my taste, but I still mapped it for all my volume & channel buttons (the hard buttons with the channel/volume lables are just not in a very friendly place). The only other knock on the buttons, is that it doesn't allow you to customize the power button for use in device mode. The power button is used only for powering down in activity mode.
One last note, looking at the harmony 360, if you want more hard buttons, you might want to spend the extra $$. It has a total of 8 additonal buttons (4 below the number pad, & 4 below the FF RW etc keys --t he mute & previous buttons were moved below the volume & channel keys to accomodate these).
Here is a review (http://gear.ign.com/articles/667/667740p1.html)
05_TSX_GP 12-01-05, 06:14 PM I bought my 520 couple days ago - just week and a half after I got my first plasma in the Panny 42PX500.
For a summary, I like the remote so far and I got it for a very good price :D It's slick looking - best style out of all Harmony IMHO. It's ultra flexible and easy to program (vs punching codes on most other universal remotes). My wife likes how it looks too but so far I haven't field-tested it with her, I'll make sure "Watch TV" works perfectly before asking her to test drive it ;)
Just to note, the full text below of my initial impression is actually from an email I wrote to a buddy of mine asking me about my 520:
Speaking of the Harmony, I did a first round of trial last night. Had no problem setting up my 4 devices (TV, Shaw STB, DVD player, Audio System). Set up just one activity (Watch TV). Over all, I like it so far... the remote is no "majic", it does "activity" by essentially firing a sequence (macro, I guess) of IR commands to set the right device in the right input, state, etc. And map the remote buttons accordingly ( i.e. channels up/down as STB commands; volume up/down as TV commands, etc.). Guys like us understand this relatively easily which is an advantage when it comes to setting up and/or troubleshooting for ourselves - I can see why some people would have trouble or be confused/frustrated at times by it. In fact, I did have to troubleshoot right away for the Watch TV activity; the remote was firing commands sequence to ensure the TV is at the right input ("Input", "5") but it was doing that too quickly, the TV was still "booting up" as the "Input" command was sent, so the TV only receives the "5" command and changes to channel 5 instead. To correct this, I had to adjust the post-power-on delay setting for the TV; give it enough time to boot up before the remote sends out the change input sequence. I found the screen (on the PC/Internet app) to set that relatively easily but still trying to set the right amount of delay, so some trial-n-error. What I am surprised by this is that the default delay value being not long enough; I mean, these default settings are supposed to be per-brand and per-model specific, so I would expect the default to work out-of-the-box. My only "excuse" for them is that the TV is a very new model and it's virtually impossible for Harmony to field test every device in their database; so they probably just have to relay on numbers that they can get from manufacturers or in some cases make best guess ;) I can see myself enjoying this single remote solution for day-to-day op of the "entertainment system". I love how much customization I can do, not only in the "activity" mode but also in just the plain "device-specific" mode, I can map the buttons to send virtually any command the device can take. There are also (limitless?) soft buttons (4 per page) in addition to those hard buttons on the remote.
slick316 12-01-05, 09:12 PM I have two issues, maybe someone can help me out.
First off, when I press buttons on the remote, the reaction time is slow, how do I speed it up so that when I press the buttons the change is instant (its annoying when I am flipping through channels on the TV).
Second, my remote is acting up. For some reason, my Activities aren't working well. For instance, my Watch TV activity is set to turn the TV on to Tuner, and make sure all other devices are off. Its not doing this, one time, it turned on my 360 with the TV. Another time, it turned on my pre amp. Other activities are doing this also, can't figure out the issue.
Other than that, the remote is great, I am still surprised that it allows me to control my Roku Soundbridge M2000, thats cool to me.
Foxbat121 12-01-05, 11:08 PM My Harmony 360 remote has locked up twice so far all while I was watching TV but didn't totch the remote at all. I had to take the battery out to reset it. I had a feeling the firmware on these things are still too new. This one is probably going back to the store. On the positive side, the extra buttons on the Harmony 360 over 520 really comes handy for a DVR setup. For that reason, I probably won't swap it for a 520 even though it is cheaper.

Since most of these devices probably don't have discret power on/off IR codes, the remote has to use the single power toggle IR code to turn on or off the devices and rememeber the power status of each device in control. If the remote thinks your device is on but it is really off, you will have a problem. You need make sure the status of each device is in sync with remote and only use Harmony remote to operate them.
slick316 12-01-05, 11:55 PM I fixed it, I just redid the Activities again (deleted the current ones, and re ran the setup for each). They worked fine, just for some reason, it acted up today, I don't understand why.
Also got the speed setting correct, the delay was set too long.
So I guess now, I am satisfied with this remote :)
Munkee Boy 12-05-05, 04:13 PM I've read through this and other threads, but I still have questions. Does this remote (and the XBOX 360 version) support macros like its more expensive bretheren? So for instance, I could push "Listen to Music" or something, and have it turn on my tv, turn on my receiver to the correct input, and go to the "My Music" part of Media Center Edition 2005 (through the use of the Media Center remote ir receiver)? Also, say you teach it a macro like the one I mentioned, and turning on the tv is in the macro, but you are already watching tv. Does it recognize that the tv is already on and skip that step?
flight23 12-05-05, 11:44 PM Im having some issues with my Harmony 520. In terms of function it controls everything perfectly, but although the backlight turns off appropriately the LCD never seems to. And because of that the tilt function to turn on the backlight never works either.
Anyone else have this problem? How long is the LCD supposed to stay on before turning off?

Only if you have turned on the TV using the remote and that action was included in another Macro, "Watch TV" for example. If you turn on the TV manually than the remote has no way to know that it was on.

Basically what this message is saying is, if you start out with all of your components off, and use ONLY your remote to turn things on and off, then the remote knows the status of each of your components and acts accordingly. ie it does remember that you already used the remote to turn on the TV.
As for your super macro question, you can set up a macro to do anything you want, including all of the steps you mentioned in your post.
So my LCD does eventually turn off, but it appears that it takes a LONG time. I checked it for about 30 minutes I think without it turning off, but when I woke up this morning it was off.
Another question... How do you get rid of the LCD buttons like 'A, B, C' for the PVR.
gusher1 12-06-05, 12:10 PM I am wondering whether you can customize the activities to match your system. For example, in my living room, I have both a regular TV and an X-1 projector. We usually watch the regular TV, but like to use the projector for DVDs at night. Can you program separate activities to do:
Watch a video from VCR on regular TV
Watch a DVD on regular TV
Watch TV on regular TV
Watch DVD on projector
Watch a video from VCR on projector
Watch TV on projector
Also, the screen for my projector is a manual pull-down screen. Can I program the 520 to activate my wife to pull down the screen:-)

Well, assuming that you have the capability to do all of those already (ie not one of those 'doctor will i be able to play the piano after my operation' 'yes' 'amazing! I never could before' type of things) then:
Yes.

For the last thing, probably with the next firmware upgrade...(for your wife, not the remote).

Thanks for the response. Yes, I can do all those things now with the help of 5 remotes. I don't mind so much but my wife and daughter can't do most of it so I have to drop everything whenever my 5-year old wants to watch a video. And my wife is always complaining about all the remotes (we have a 6th for the ceiling fan).
So how does it work, do you simply scroll through a list of user-created activities? Is there a limit to the number of activities you can create? Since I have 3 sources of input (cable, VCR, DVD), and two sources of output (TV and projector), I need at least 6 activities for video. Plus probably a few more for listening to music (CD, Tape, Tuner).

Yes, you create a list of activities. I'm not sure about the 520 (I use a 680), but if there are hard activity buttons on the remote, those can be assigned the most commonly used activities (the ones the family uses the most), and the rest can be accessed through the list.
There is a limit to the number of activities you can have, but it's absurdly high. the Harmony website's comparison chart lists the max number of devices and activities each model can have, but they're all around 12-15 devices and 255 activities.
gusher1 12-09-05, 05:17 PM Based on the responses I received to my questions, it sounds like the Harmony 520 will work well for my situation. I picked one up at Walmart today, but since it will be a Christmas present for my wife, I won't be able to use it until Christmas.
Thanks again, flight123 and Cax6ton.
If I gave my wife a remote for xmas, well....lets just say it wouldn't be a pretty sight  :D

Just thought to give another quick update upon my initial impression post 10 days ago.
This remote is still rocking!!! I have been using it with the same setting and configuration I have programmed in 10 days ago and have had zero problem with it. I have programmed four activities on it so far:
watch TV (panny px500 + motorola STB)
watch DVD using TV sound (panny px500 + sony dvd)
watch DVD (panny px500 + sony dvd + sony av receiver)
listen to CD (sony dvd + sony av receiver)
All with buttons (hard and soft) configured the way I need and like them; for example, the "mode up and down" for my av receiver to make sure I have control on the surround sound reproduction mode selected is important to me, etc.
This is an universal remote I'll definitely recommend to anyone I know who asks!!!

I am still kinda new to the whole Harmony remote thing but I think when you are in Device mode, you can only send commands for that one device. That's why they created the Activity concept...

Actually, when you are in device mode, you can teach it a new custom command (pretending that it is originating from that device's remote), and then assign the volume button to that custom command. Just one option if you don't want to mess with activities.
For those with the Moto 6412 III stb when programming your remote did you select Motorola PVR to change channels or Motorola Digital Set Top Box to change channels?
DasRaven 12-13-05, 07:57 PM I logged on to do some tweaking and to add my new DVD player and I got a new firmware revision also. It is V2.1 and it so far seems to significantly improve both the tilt lighting and tendancy for the lighting to stay on long after you've stopped using the remote.
That'll save some batteries.

Some of them have a cheap click, and the others, it seems you really have to mash them, and there's no feedback that you have actually pressed it enough. And i don't like how the Vol and Chan buttons are flush with the remote.
I love the functionality though.

520 is also my first Harmony (also first after-market universal) remote. I don't have a problem with the buttons feel but I do know what you (and many others) are referring to.
On mine though, it seems that the Vol Dn and Ch Dn buttons are flush while the Vol Up and Ch Up are slightly raised... not sure if they are supposed to be like that or just mine?

Will connecting my remote to the pc and logged on AUTOMATICALLY update my firmware?
I have no need to adjust my settings (at this point) and have no problem with the remote at all, should I still connect it up to the "mothership" just for the firmware update? (or maybe mine's already 2.1 as I only had mine for 2 weeks...)

No, you have to go to 'support' (IIRC) from the main menu, under that, there are several options (Update firmware, Update software...)
Be patient, the firmware takes a LOOOOONG time (it has to re-update your remote with all your codes).
BTW, I never could get the update software to work from the menu, they provide a link that is supposed to download an installer...i click & nothing happens...So I am still on 2.01 of the harmony software.

I couldn't agree more. The 520 was my first remote. I liked the way it looks and has good balance and is comfortable in your hand, but I couldn't get past the lousy feel of the buttons. I sold mine on eBay, I actually made money after all was said and done, and will be getting a 680 instead. Most of the Harmonys' are generally cheaper at retail in Canada so it was easy to sell at a decent price.
cbordman 12-15-05, 09:36 AM I've had the 520 for 4 days now. Sears has a 90 day return policy, so i'm going to give it until after christmas. I'm really leaning toward the 676, but i don't know of anyplace that will let you try it out first.
I hate to open things and take them back to the store.. But when you spend $100+ for something that you don't like, and there is no way to try it out in the store, i guess you have no choice..
Michelle_eris 12-15-05, 11:57 AM For those interested in finding this remote at Walmart....here is the list of "exclusive" stores that are carrying it....
I guess as only the 5th largest city in the US, Philadelphia is just too rural to handle this kind of technology!!!
Sorry, but Phoenix overtook Philly about a year and a half ago, and is now the fifth largest city in the US.
Michelle_eris 12-15-05, 12:08 PM Bye the way, in January 2004 and 2005, Harmony had a presence at MacWorld Expo San Francisco. They were offering very deep discounts on the remotes--some of them were 50% off list. I expect them to be there in Jan 2006. So, if you're planning to go to MacWorld, or happen to live in the area, you might want to wait to buy it there. (Two notes, though: There's a $30 admission charge--if you buy it in advance--so you will have to consider that if that's the only reason you would go there. Secondly, they take orders at MacWorld, but will ship within a week or so after the conference is over, so you won't get instant gratification.)
uh check again with sears its a 30 return policy on electronics not 90 day
Jmlkoho 12-19-05, 04:13 PM Well I am getting ready to purchase a Harmony 520 to replace the growing number of remotes in my bedroom. However I have a few quick questions I hope you guys can answer.
My Equipment is as follows:
Syntax 30" LCD
HP z545 Media Center
Yamaha YSP-800 Speaker
Motorola HD cable box
Lutron Maestro Light Dimmer
I primarily want to know if anyone has gotten the 520 to work well as a Media Center Remote. Also does anyone see any of my equipment as being a problem for the Harmony code database?
Thanks
Jordan
cbordman 12-20-05, 10:39 AM uh check again with sears its a 30 return policy on electronics not 90 day
That's right. 90 days for everything except electronics.
The 520 isn't going back. It's really doing a great job.
cbordman 12-20-05, 10:44 AM Is there any reason why the initial custom LCD labels for the 520 are all jammed together with no spaces? I've gone back and added spaces to everything that the harmony software created. For instance 'PwrToggle' can be better described as 'Power Toggle', and 'InputVideo4' can't even be displayed on 1 line. But if you edit it to be 'Input Video4', it looks great on 2 lines.
I just received my 520 last night and have begun setting it up. I have a TH42PD25 plasma with an internal tuner. Although I see Tuner as an option to base an activity around, this command does not seem to work. Anyone else have a similiar problem? I have no problems with the other inputs.
The only workaround that I will probably try is to set the TV to the last Video input and then cycle to the next input which would be the tuner. Once on the tuner, I can then select AntA or AntB.
Thanks
cbordman 12-21-05, 10:55 AM Does your original remote have a button that takes you direct to the tuner? If so, you can learn that command.
You could also keep trying the commands for your TV in device mode, and see if any of them do what you want. The harmony command database can have a lot of seemingly redundant names for commands.

No it doesn't however I dont have buttons that go directly to my other inputs and the 520 handles those fine.
I did try the help but it seemed endless. Maybe I need to be more patient and go through them all.
Also, I find it difficult to see the text on the LCD screen. Do others have to strain to see the LCD text?

I did try the help but it seemed endless. Maybe I need to be more patient and go through them all.

I know on a lot of TVs, pressing channel up or down will change the input to the tuner. If your's does that, you could use the channel up button.
I'll give that a try tonight...thanks
beaudot 12-21-05, 11:34 AM I just got this remote yesterday. It was a bit cumbersome to set up for a while. I was having problems with having firefox as my default browser, pop up blocker, etc. Like someone said, the local version of the software sucks. The web version is very cool once you get a hang of it. I had a couple tricky things I wanted to do, and no problem. The activity model is very cool.
The one complaint is my OK button is very tough to press. Just pressing it enough to click is not enough. I have to press quite hard. Anyone else have a problem with this button, or is my unit a little defective?

My original remote is the same way. I have a 'Next Input' which makes you scroll thru all of them. But it also has an 'Ant' button which will take you directly to the tuner. The channel up button should also do the trick.

My OK button is ok. Sounds like a bad clicker.
FourDoor 12-21-05, 04:30 PM OK well I got my Harmony 360 remote yesterday and spent about 3 hours programming the sucker last night. I became very anal and wanted the LCD buttons for the activities and devices customized so that they were all “grouped” properly in groups of 4 (BTW, I think I want to go in and change some of the buttons again when I get home tonight. :D) The annoying part is that the order on how the groups of 4 were displayed differently for each device/activity for some reason. So if I had button 1 2 3 4 listed in the harmony setup, it would show (top left 1, top right 2, bottom left 3, and bottom right 4) or sometimes (top left 1, top right 3, bottom left 2, and bottom right 4). Kinda annoying and was part of the reason why it took so long to program the lcd buttons.
Anyways, I’m a big Tivo user. My HR10-250 is the centerpiece of my living room. So far, the 360 remote feels good in my hand. It’ll just take some time to re-learn where all of the buttons are on the remote, primarily ff, pause, and play. My thumb needed some new exercise anyways.
I’ll post actual use impressions when I get more time on the remote. But so far, I am happy with how the buttons feel and the layout of the remote as the ff, play, etc buttons are in the middle right next to my thumb just like the Tivo peanut.
slick316 12-22-05, 04:43 PM I got a question for all the 520 users.
I was wanting to really customize this remote to do something a little odd. I have an audio out from my TV connected to my receiver for that rare occasion that I want to output the sound from my TV to my receiver. For me to do this, I have to go into my TV's setup menu, go to audio, scroll to speaker, and set it to "OFF", this disables the TV's speakers and outputs the sound to the TV's audio out. Can I make the 520 do this for me in an activity (doesn't sound like I can, but thought I would ask).
Also, I couldn't find it in the setup, but is the Velodyne DD-10 remote control in the database? I will add in the controls manual (learning mode), but would rather do it the easy way :)

YEs, I was able to do that exact thing with my Sony KDF-42A10. I created a new activity which turned on the tv, cable box and reciever and turned off the tv speaker. I forget exactly where, but there's a way to change/add ir codes to an activity. Dig around the activity options in the setup software...
While I liked the looks of the 520, I didn't like the feel of the buttons & having only 4 programable buttons, so I returned it but will be ordering a 600 series soon.
cbordman 12-24-05, 07:01 AM The 520 for my SONY TV has a remote code for Speaker Toggle. It allows me to turn the speaker on/off with a single button.
hsinnott 12-24-05, 10:30 AM Can anyone compare the "feel" of the 520 to the rest of the harmony remotes? The 520 is my first harmony, and i don't really like the way the buttons feel. Some of them have a cheap click, and the others, it seems you really have to mash them, and there's no feedback that you have actually pressed it enough. And i don't like how the Vol and Chan buttons are flush with the remote.
I love the functionality though.
>>> I'm on the verge of selling my 520 because of the horrible feel of the buttons- its giving me pains in my hands, wrists and fingers and last night after I pressed the Vol Up button, the button got jammed and the volume kept increasing. The buttons are either mushy or too hard to press- awful! The remote looks cool- but unfortunetely the feel of the buttons is a disaster.

Thats what I ended up doing, I couldn't figure out how to incorporate that button/function into an activity.
sparrow_69 12-25-05, 01:43 AM Does anyone know if the Harmony 520 will support the dvd functions of an xbox? I'm currently using the official dvd remote with IR receiver. I'm not talking about turning the unit on/off, but just play, stop, pause, etc. when watching a dvd. Thanks
Well, the party pooper I am, I have to mention that my Harmony 520 took a tumble down on to the hardwood floor and went belly up !! I returned it to Walmart within two weeks of buying it. I also hated the clicky feel of some of the buttons and the squishy feel of the number buttons.
Top functionality and horrible buttons mark this remote.
BunLengthHotDog 12-26-05, 10:20 PM Got 520 for XMAS too (the 360 version) and have most of my stuff programmed (got in LATE last night, this morning...around 4am). However, I had my DTV HDTV receiver installed this evening and am patiently waiting for the Logitech system to come back online. Does anyone know off the top of their head if they have any codes for the H20 receiver (LG H20-600 I believe).
Thanks for any input.
EDIT: Nevermind...it was listed under DirecTV
Ok, so here's my question:
It applies to when I'm watching a DVD or watching HDTV (via OTA receiver).
I have my activities setup so that the inputs on the tv are correct and the controls work either the DVD player or the HD Receiver great. However, the volume doesn't. Reason being, is that is done on the TV.
Can I program the volume buttons to function on the TV even when I am set to be controlling the DVD player or HD Receiver?
Pete7874 12-28-05, 01:06 AM Every time I select "Watch TV" activity, it not only switches to the TV tuner, but also skips one channel forward or back. Why is it doing it? I have double checked my settings - there is no additional actions that would make it behave this way. What's going on?
Has anyone been able to get the tilt lighting to work? I can't even find that option in the remote preferences.
synchronic 12-29-05, 01:35 AM cbordman,
after getting the 880 for Christmas I quickly realized that I didn't want to have to fork out $250 each time someone killed the remote with drinks, etc.
So I got the 520, the buttons actually feel better for me and the buttons next to the screen are more raised than the 880. The only thing I lost are icons and 4 additional lines. I actually bought the XBox version because it has almost 10 more buttons to program. It was $30 more than the 520.
This remote is such a godsend. I used to spend hours having my HK remote for my AVR 7200 learn stupid commands, no more!!
This thing rocks and Harmony actually has all the discreet codes for my Panny that get me straight to the aspect ratios I need.
synchronic 12-29-05, 01:36 AM Rasire, on my Harmony 360, tilt only works if the remote has been sitting around for a long time.
Thanks synchronic. Hopefully this can be changed in a firmware update later on.
Playing around with this for the first time. It seems to fit my needs well after getting used to the Activities System. The only thing that really bothers me is that it seems like I need to hold the activities button for a second or so in order for it to bring the activities menu up. Is this normal for everyone? Is there any way to program it so I can just press the button? I really can't understand the point of this.
MurphieNB 12-30-05, 06:10 PM Just got on board with HDTV (Sony KDFE50A10), and subscribed to HD through DirecTV getting local (Dallas) channels. Some minor issues getting that set up, but overall, I'm real pleased.
My old universal remote won't work with the new H20, so I decided to try the Harmony 520. I liked the simple layout of that remote over some of Harmony/Logitech's other models. As other users have discovered, their website seems to be overloaded right after Christmas, but for the most part, I've been able to get in fairly quickly.
I'd really like to say that I like the 520 so far, but I can't. There doesn't seem to be anything I can do to get it to control my Sony receiver (STR-DE845). I know it's not the newest receiver around, but it should be fairly common. Nothing ever happens with the signals when sent as part of an 'Activity', yet if I select 'Device', everything I've tried works.
I'm hoping Logitech can find a solution for me, otherwise it's going back.
Happy New Year to all.
I got the 520 as christmas present. It's cool looking and once you spend the time to tweak everything it really works well. The problem is the remote feels cheap. I can hear the plastic squeak when I press down on some buttons. On the rubber buttons from the guide down to the Prev button you really have to push hard as the sweet spot sits down too low. Not quite as bad on the DVD player buttons. But the clicking buttons like the Vol/Chan/OK/Up/Dn/Lt/Rt are the killer for me. And not only do the clicking buttons feel cheap and awkward, they aren't very responsive when you pull up a TV menu. I like to tweak my TV settings and it takes me 3 times as long to go through the TVs menu as it does on the Sony remote. It's hard to believe that Logitech released this remote with the buttons the way they are. Not sure what to do now. As mentioned before I love this remote and dislike it at the same time. I'll have to check out some of Harmony's other remotes I guess :(.
cbordman 01-01-06, 07:33 AM The wife made me return the 520. The clicking is really annoying. Waiting for the 680 now..

I just purchased the 520 last night and have a question regarding the setup for my Motorola DCT6412 DVR. It appears that all of the functions are supported except the LIST button from my other remote (from Cox). It seems like pulling up the list of recorded items is one of the most basic features for a PVR so I must be overlooking it. I tried to go in and customize a button for it but couldn't find anything plausible in the drop down function list. Do I have to use the learing function to accomplish this or has somebody else out there already figured it out.

I would use the Learn function for this. You can have it learn 1 command without losing all the rest of the predefined commands.
Anyone know if its possible to program the remote to keep a certain device on when the power button on the harmony is pressed to turn off all the devices?
Thanks.
05_TSX_GP 01-07-06, 03:32 PM Anyone know if its possible to program the remote to keep a certain device on when the power button on the harmony is pressed to turn off all the devices?
Thanks.
I haven't done any test/experiment with this idea (never thought of needing to do that for my setup), but here's what I think you could try:
Since the "power off" button is effectively for stopping the "activity" you have engaged in, I think you can configure in the "activity" to leave whichever device(s) ON when you stop the "activity".
Let us know how that goes.
Yes. There is an option to leave any device on at all times.

It's under 'more options' -> 'adjust power settings'
I bought one of these for my sister for Xmas, and set it up (I have a Harmony 680 for myself). The software is a bit tweaked, but basically the same Harmony web software. The major improvement I noticed was support for reordering activities. Set up went mostly smoothly. Their database had all of my sister's components, but commands for her DeSay DVD player were jumbled (i.e. they were real commands, but didn't do the right thing) so I had to relearn them. Learning from the original remote went very smoothly compared to other learning remotes I've used. It seems to be very good at recognizing a bad read and requesting a retry--if it accepted the command, it worked.
Harmony's programming software is very good at the beginner level, but it can be confusing if you want to do something that isn't covered by their wizard (Hint: click the little button at the top of the web page that says "Home" to get to a less structured interface)
Main limitations compared to my 680 are fewer hard buttons, as well as fewer LCD (4 instead of 6) buttons. The lack of hard activities buttons means that you always have to hit an "Activities" button to bring up the LCD menu in order to switch activities.
It also did not retain programming through a battery change as my 680 does--not a big deal as it merely required a web re-update.I gather that it is supposed to have a tilt sensor. Once I had it light up when I picked it up, but I couldn't repeat it. This will be a nice feature if they can get it to work more reliably.
Main advantage is a very clean design, although they do seem to have gone for looks over function with the channel and volume buttons--I prefer the more-prominent rocker buttons of my 680.
My technophobic brother-in-law seems very pleased with it. It does what he wants it to do and doesn't require him to keep track of what component is hooked to what input of what.
As for me, I'll keep my 680; It doesn't do anything I need that the 520 won't, but I like the extra buttons.
anyone have a comparison of the 520 to the pronto tsu500 as the are priced the same..........thanks
Stoopid37 01-09-06, 10:23 AM I just got the 520, after exchanging a POS Sony Universal. I love the 520, the set up was easy and it does everything I need it to. I want to reorganize the order of the softkeys, so particular keys show up on the first menu (of 3). I figured out how to change the order of the activities, but can not find this function in any of the activities menus.
Help.

If I understand your question it's just a matter of the order you put them under the Custom Button Label. For example I have 8 custom buttons. The first four I have under the Custom Button Label appear on the first page of (the 4) soft keys on the remote and the last four appear on the 2nd page.

Thanks for the reply. I figured as much, but when I'm in that section it shows only 4 active buttons (in the configurator), but the remote has 10 (in actual use). I found this strange. Am I in the wrong screen? I even hit the "Show More Buttons" button and it loads the exact same screen.

Using the website (vs the PC client) it's: Under Activities -> click on 'Customize' for the device you want to control -> Change the behaviour of buttons -> scroll to the bottom and order them under Custom Button Label

Yep, that is the same screen as the PC client. It's stange, it only show 4 buttons! 'C', 'List', 'Live', 'Aspect' - but the remote has several more including 'PgUp', 'PgDn', 'A', 'B', the four mentioned above and a few more. Is the solution to manually 're-add' the buttons and hope I don't forget any?
Can I also assume the vertical list will be reflected in teh remote as follows?
1 2
3 4
5 6
7 8
etc...

Thanks for the help. I found it strange that the keys didn't match the remote, but I have changed it on-line and will update my remote tonight. I will post the results, favorable or otherwise.
I will probably e-mail support (under 'provide feedback') and let them know I would prefer an interface like the 'Re-Order Activities' function. Simpler and less confusing, IMHO.

Thanks for the quick review on the 520. Nice to hear it stacks up to the 680 pretty well in terms of functionality ;)
One thing to correct you though regarding the tilt sensor. I've been using the 520 for over a month now and have figured that it times out after some period and the LCD screen blanks out. It is when the remote gets into that state then the tilt and auto-lightup will activate. I just don't know how long the "idle" time-out is, but it is behaving consistently after every overnight idle.
Now I have a question regarding 520 requiring re-updating at batteries change. Obviously I haven't had it long enough yet to change batteries, but are you saying I must re-update it when I change batteries? Doesn't matter how fast I swap out and in the batteries???

what i would actually like is to leave some devices on all the time but when i press the "Off" button, it would send the Off signal to all devices (whether used in the activity or not).
my predicament is when i would like to watch TV but while listening to CDs. either device will be off in their respective "activity".

Good question. I have a similar problem, which may have a similar answer. When I switch 'Activities' I want to keep some devices on. For example, I have a bulb driven TV that requires warm up and cool down times. I would rather turn it on once and leave it on. So if was using the 'Watch TV' activity and switched to the 'Listen to Music' activity which uses all the same equipment other than the TV, it will turn the TV off. I would rather it stayed on until I switched it off manually, or shut everything down. The set up will either turn it on or turn everything that is not in use off. Is there a setting like "Leave everything else the way it was" option?
Thanks.
Change "Watch TV" and "Listen to CD" activities to "Leave unused devices on"...under "customize" then "options"

Zappy_Denmark 01-11-06, 07:11 AM A quick question.
What happens in the LCD-panal when I hit the "Watch TV" Button? Will it change to controls related to the TV? And - if so - is it the same with other activities.
Or do I put controls in the panel myself? Maybe both?
I've tried to get hold of a manual, but can't find it.
I've ordered my Harmony 525 (Danish name for 520) for 55$ - the price in Denmark guys!
Since I'm not english speaking please excuse my english.
The Harmony will set up a default configuration for all buttons, including the LCD buttons, based on what it thinks should go where. However, you can change it and put any command you want on any button you want for every activity.

Wooa your fast! Great.
I use Teletext/TextTV. Can I program a panel to go to a specific page on one button? I use the pages 303, 304, 412 and 110 alot.
This is a killer forum! :)
It depends how you actually select the page, but probably not. You could possibly do it with an 880/5 or the 6xx series by using the Favourite channels feature, but I wouldn't know for sure.

I'm not absolutely certain. I wasn't lightning fast with the change (I took out the old batteries then fumbled a bit getting the new ones out of the wrapper). But I've never had the 680 lose its memory on a change.

I have noticed that sometimes when I add new functions to the custom labels button it doesn't add them to the end of the list but tends to group them with like functions. This seems intuitive but it ends up making my page groupings ackward (like having chup on one page and chdwn on another). I have also noticed that since it always wants to put chup next to chdwn that if they are on the same page they end up side by side instead of top and bottom like I would prefer. Do I have some sort of "helper" enabled or have other people seen this as well?
gsmollin 01-12-06, 03:16 PM I bought one yesterday, at Wal-Mart, which is good, since I'm not sure if I'm keeping it. I like the idea; activity-based remote reduces the complexity of operating a component-based home theater. The wife likes the idea too. The 520 is good looking. It feels somewhat cheesy, making cracking noises if its twisted a little. That's not a big deal since it is inexpensive, for such a sophisticated device.
My problems began with the PC software. It crashed a number of times. Sometimes it got stuck in a screen, and I had to log out and log in to get it out of that mode. Communication with the server was smooth, however.
After I got past the crashing, I was able to program 4 activities. I takes a long time to program the remote, and that was a real problem later. "Watch DVD" went smoothly, with a Oppo player, an Infocus projector, and a Pioneer VSX-515 AV receiver. Later I decided to try, "Listen to Radio". The remote wouldn't switch the FM input. I pushed "help" until I got tired of that. It was no help. Then I tried to troubleshoot the problem using the PC software. The interface really sucks. It is very difficult to get it to do anything well, and it could not trouble shoot the problem. I finally stumbled across a learning mode, and got the remote to learn the "FM" select function. Then it started to work, elapsed time, about 2 hours. After the remote learned the FM command, I got a large list of other "recommended commands" to learn. Well, I was not in the mood to pursue it further and x'd out. I am pretty disappointed that the database had wrong codes for a mass-marketed receiver, and didn't even know it. I am further disappointed at how ineffective the troubleshooting section was. Lastly, the cycle time for trying new codes is much worse than an old-fashioned remote, where you don't have to reprogram the entire remote to try out one new command.
One thing I'm pretty fuzzy about, is why there is a PC client, and a web-based client, when you need the internet to do anything with this remote. Also, I solicit opinions about whether the PC client or web-based client is better. I have only used the PC client, but would gladly change if the web-base client is better.
Stoopid37 01-12-06, 03:32 PM I have used both and actually prefer the web based client. I find it faster and easier to deal with. The PC based client seemed to take a long time to refresh and EVERYTHING needs to be refreshed (or so it seems). Not sure why but the web seems faster, but I have not been able to update the remote using the web client. So I make changes, usually at work, via the web then update the remote via the PC when I get home.
AngryofMayfair 01-12-06, 07:31 PM I just purchased a 520 as an additional remote after being so impressed with my 880 but I have to say that I am so damn annoyed that I ever went near this 520 - the first thing that happened was the old remote software V4.4 wouldnt' work with the 520 and the new 520 software uninstalled the old V4.4 but now the new software won't connect and update either the 520 or the 880!!!!!
I have just installed this new remote client software of three PC's and on each one Iget the same problems - 'timeout whilst attempting to contact harmonymembers.com' ...
All firewalls and virus detection is currently off - no problems at all getting to any other web site, I can even log on to the remote member website and make changes to the 520 or 880 configurations but when the time comes to update the configuration to either remote the whole lot just either times out or cannot upload to the remote - crazy - especially as the old software worked perfect with the 880...
This has already tsken up far too much of my time - 6hrs and counting.
Back to the store with this pile of junk - sorry Logitech I have had it with you and your pathetic software....

Zappy_Denmark 01-13-06, 03:11 AM I have - I quess - a simple question.
I've just recieved my 520 and is started working with it. So far I have no pros or cons against it. I've had it for only a few hours. Allthough I do agree with the bad reviews of the software. Slow and crashing.
The question. The activities work fine. But how do I exit an activity? It seems to me that once I've pressed the activity I stay there. I assumed there was some sort of exit?
What I would like to do is this: Execute an activity and then have other activities. A sort of sub-activity.
Am I totally lost in this activityscene?
Great threat btw.
You can't have sub-activities.
To exit an activity, either press "off" to turn everything off, or press another activity button to start another activity.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish? It sounds like you haven't quite got your head around the activity concept yet(not uncommon), but once you do, you'll probably find you won't need "sub-activities" etc.

Hmm. Then I press an activitybuttom the display changes. It doesn't go back to the first screen. I suppose that is the way it should be?
What I'm trying to do is something like this: I use "Watch TV". After the activity is completed I would like to use another activity that turns on Teletext and goes to page xxx.

I have both an 880 and a 520. Although I installed the new software, which the 520 requires, I still use the website for doing updates and changes. This works great for both remotes, and I'm able to avoid the new software's user interface.
Timeout errors are usually the result of either high traffic levels at Harmony or problems/traffic on some part of the internet between you and Harmony's site. I run McAfee VirusScan and ZoneAlarm Pro and neither cause any problems. Sometimes, we just need to wait a while for things to slow down. In your particular case, the website is so busy that your browser (not the website) is timing out before the website has completed processing of your update. Simply increasing the timeout value in your browser will fix this.
It's unfortunate you had troubles, but neither the remote nor the software are to blame for them.

Simply presss the "ACTIVITY" button and it will then display the list of activities for you to pick from.
You can create a follow-up activity, if it's not something you want to happen everytime you "Watch TV", by creating a new activity with the same devices and simply add the additional steps at the end. I don't know how to do this with the new software, but it's easy to do through the website. Or, give Tech support a call. They can probably walk you through it.

Yes. When you press an activity button the screen(and the rest of the remote) will be configured to control that ACTIVITY(that will probably be a combination of several devices).
For teletext, you could add another activity called "Watch Teletext" which you would set up exactly the same as the normal "Watch TV" activity, with extra commands added to the start of the activity to bring up the teletext page, and commands at the end to turn it off again. This way, switching between "Watch TV" and "Watch teletext" will only turn teletext on or off.

This comment is not helpful because it doesn't give any specifics. It is also innacurate. The 520 is a simple, low cost remote that works well for many simple home theatre setup's. I would say it is ideal for the vast majority of consumers who are not interested in heavy configuration.
It may be hard to accept, but many people don't agonize over button placement and tactile feel etc. They simply want an easy way for thier family to be able to switch from say watching TV to watching a movie.http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6911349&&#post6911349
gsmollin 01-13-06, 02:09 PM AngryofMayfair did post his experience with the 520, which was very frustrating, if you read the post. The second post contained the STAY AWAY... bit. Taken out-of-context, it does not sound too constructive. Angry should have edited his first post to include this "take away" line.
I'll keep trying with mine, and maybe I won't have to echo Angry.
Codeman 01-13-06, 02:32 PM Have you tried the webi software yet, gsmollin? It really is much better to use. Once I got my 880 programmed the way I wanted it, I was happy I went through it. I will say, however, that I write software for living, so I'm very used to this type of activity. I'm sure it's a bit rougher for others.
Zappy_Denmark 01-15-06, 05:19 PM I'm having problems with the web interface.
When I add or adjust a bottom in the panel in one activity it copies itself to other activities!
I'm trying to add 2 bottoms in the "Watch TV" activity for adjusting my TV-screen (16:9 / 4:3 / cinema...) and then these commands are suddenly in the "Watch DVD" activity?
Now I'm a controlfreak and I want the command in certain positions in the LCD-panel and this is driving me nuts!
Anybody with some advice? (please hurry - I'm starting to loose my hair)
Also can I have empty spots in the panel? I like to categorize

Unfortunately, when you add a custom label, that label appears in every activity that uses the device. For instance, if you add your special "Aspect ratio" button for your tv, then any activity that includes the TV will have that special button...
This is a "feature" that logitech added recently...supposedly people were complaining that they had to set up the same buttons for every activity, so they changed it to automatically duplicate controls across all activities. I think just as many people are complaining about the new way it works, so maybe it will be changed back eventually(or at least made optional).
I would suggest sending an email to tech support stating your grief...the more people complainig the better!
Zappy_Denmark 01-16-06, 05:58 AM It seems it was a temporary problem. I tried later and it didn't happen. It work out just fine (?). I've saved my hair. I now have my "Aspect Ratio" in the places I want.
Still, I would like to add an empty space in one of the four. Any idears? I've tried using a space as a carecter, but it's not accepted.

Run the activity setup wizard again, but when it finishes, select "Yes, the setup is correct, but I want to add more control". You will now get an option to add IR commands to the beginning and/or end of the activity. Just add your DRC commands here
FusionRx 01-22-06, 02:03 AM Just finished programming and setting up my 520 for my modest 7 piece system (sony avr, dvd, cd, ps2, tape, comcast hdtv box, Samsung tv) and I have to say I am impressed with this remote, truly. While initially boggled by the software (5.01-5.12 update), and the firmware update (software never exited properly), the updated 5.12 cured alot of ills. Much faster and responsive.
It will take a bit of time to get used to the buttons... plus how does one set the tilt glow feature? Or is that only in the other models?
Zappy_Denmark 01-22-06, 05:11 AM Will my 520 control devices on 433.92 MHz? I've found a set of on/off switches very cheap. Sadly I can't find any info in the manual to the remote.
......<snip>.........It will take a bit of time to get used to the buttons... plus how does one set the tilt glow feature? Or is that only in the other models?
Tilt glow only works when the 520 has sat idle for several hours. This is different than the 880 which glows whenever you tilt it.
I understand it's intended to save 520 battery life (880 is rechargeable). Also the 520 screen is readable without the glow. The 880 is not.

Sometimes with Harmony remotes, it is useful to define a fictional "ModeSwitcher" device, whose "inputs" correspond to the different modes. You can then create an activity for each mode utilizing this "device."
gsmollin 01-22-06, 02:23 PM I have had the Harmony 520 for about a week now, and have some very definite opinions about it.
1. I like the button layout (start positive).
2. I like the LCD screen being readable without backlight.
3. I like the backlight control, even the tilt sensor. I understand its quirks.
4. I like the activities-oriented design. I can allow non-technical types to run the activities.
5. I dislike the software interface: Both web and PC are bad, and very buggy, and stone-slow in operation. I think I could re-install Windows in the time I've spent waiting for this remote to program, and for the interface to chew on my commands.
6. The much-hyped database is crap. I have programmed four devices, and every one has been a struggle. Commands either do not work, are in the wrong position, or perform an incorrect function on every device I have programmed. Ninety percent of my time with this remote has been fixing the broken command database. Now add the lethargic response of the software, and I have gotten pretty frustrated.
7. The response of the remote to button-pushes is poor. When trying to adjust brightness, for instance, the OEM remote allows me to push and hold the button to slew the brightness up and down. It also bumps the scale up or down one unit each time I push the button. The 520 will not slew, and it bumps the scale up or down one unit, about one second after I release the button. What kind of stupid design is that? Oddly, the volume control for the AV amplifier does work correctly, so I know it is theoretically possible for this remote to operate controls of this type correctly, but it still isn't controlling brightness and contrast on my projector correctly. This problem may be fixable with enough investment in time on my part to change the programming, or it may not, but my point is, why isn't the database correct to start with? See 6. above.
In summary, the remote's concept is good, but clearly a half-baked design. There is a world of difference between a good idea, and a good product, and Logitech hasn't learned that lesson with the Harmony 520.

This is probably the single most common problem that I've encountered with substitute remotes because the timing is very critical. With some remotes, I've been unable to fix it. One thing that I like about the Harmony is it provides enough control of timing that this kind of problem is virtually always fixable. The critical variables are the interkey delay and the number of repeats.
Codeman 01-23-06, 01:18 PM Assign those functions to any of the up/down hard buttons instead of the LCD soft buttons and the remote will behave the way you want it - very fast initial response and a continuous signal until you release the button. The LCD soft buttons were not designed to support continuous signal functions.
If you already have all of the up/down hard buttons assigned, then just create a bogus device or activity and assign those functions there.
I've had my 520 about 3 weeks now.
I havent had any luck with it at all. Couldnt get the softwear to install, had
to call tech. support, and even then it took a long time to install it.
The remote cant learn some of my components functions.
I loaded the codes for my VCR (which I never use anyway) but it doesnt
work.
This thing is worthless. I have gone back to using the seperate remotes.
About the only thing I can get it to do is turn everything on and off.
And now that I'm thinking about it, when I get home it goes in the trash
gsmollin 01-24-06, 09:53 AM Nats: Could you return it to WalMart or Target? If no return, then maybe e-bay or an an avsforum could help sell it. $98 and new is too much to waste, IMHO.
Codeman: Thanks with the pointer about LCD buttons. That's a real quirk. By "up/down" hard button, do you mean only the volume and channel buttons, or other hard buttons qualify too? I do not have the volume/channel assigned when in device-projector mode.
Codeman 01-24-06, 01:27 PM The vol and channel definitely, plus the navigations ones (I think). The other hard buttons might, but I haven't tried it.

It sounds a bit like the Comcast might be putting out a resolution that that input of your TV won't receive. Is it possible that your remote is set up to enter some codes to set output resolution for the Comcast box, and the Harmony has gotten confused about which mode it is in?
FusionRx 01-25-06, 02:28 PM Don't think so. My wife said she had pressed the Play Game setting (accidentally) and then this is what happend (PS2). PS2 is on a Video 1 port on TV (not Component cable, but the regular RCA's).
It worked before she pressed that button. Should I simply ditch the Play game button and reload the software onto the remote? Think that would cure it?
Does running through the Help routine fix it?

FusionRx 01-26-06, 12:26 PM Ok... now trying to uninstall the software off of the computer I have it on (windows 2000 fully patched SP4 etc). and everytime I go to the add/remove software the computer freezes and I have to reboot. Hmm....did you do it under a Device, or an Activity?
An Activity. I pretty much don't use Device mode.
bnwinsf 01-26-06, 04:55 PM I just got my 520 yesterday. I thought I'd share my experiences. The software installed on my Mac just fine. I was able to access the web site w/o any difficulty. I've got what I think is a relatively standard set of components:
Samsung 43" HLN437W1X/XAA DLP
Samsung HD-841 DVD
Motorola 6412 Cable/HD/DVR (Phase 3)
Samsung SIR-T451 HDTV Receiver
Denon AVR-2150 AV Receiver
Denon CD Player
I went through the web site, setting up the devices and all the activities. After updating the remote, I went to try it out. Of course, it didn't work perfectly the first time out. Some of the problems were:
-- I wanted the Moto 6412 to always stay on. It took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to make that happen.
-- My main problem was with the TV. To change video inputs, the Samsung remote has a TV/Video toggle button. It only toggles through those inputs that are connected. I only use the Component 1 input (for the AV receiver) and the DVI input (for the DVD player). This is good. But the AIR (Antenna) input, even though it doesn't have anything connected to it, is still active. So when I used the 520 to change activities, it gets screwed up by the fact that the AIR input is still there. It took me about 2 hours to figure out that my TV can accept discrete codes. But I didn't know which command to use for each (DVI, Component 1). Luckily, I noticed that when I pushed the Devices button on the remote, then selected TV, all the inputs are listed on the LCD screen. I discovered that "InputDVI2" worked for the DVI input, and that "InputComponent2" worked for the Component 1 input (yes... odd). Anyway, I updated the remote, and now it works just fine.
So it took some experimentation, perserverance, and some time.... it wasn't self-evident how to make this work, but it now works. So far, I'm really liking the 520.

arctickat 01-29-06, 01:30 PM Just programmed my 520 and I would like to add a command for the hdmi switch. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so how does the learn function work. Thanks!
I'm going to return the 520 I bought about a week ago. I got the software to work OK, but it does buggy things sometimes (like not closing). The main problem with the remote is it can't seem to switch inputs on my TV, which kind of kills the whole thing. I went back and forth a few times with help and troubleshooting. I'm not going to invest hours in this just to make a simple thing work. The buttons are also small and mashy for my taste. Not worth $100 IMO.
Oh well, the quest continues...
Just programmed my 520 and I would like to add a command for the hdmi switch. Does anyone have any experience with this and if so how does the learn function work. Thanks!
You can create a new device from your Harmony home page. Switches are in the "amplifier" category, then you'll find setup under "More options." If you need to learn commands, you'll find the routine for that there too. Harmony's learning is generally quite reliable, although a bit slow since it involves a small download for each learn. Note that you point your old remote at the bottom of the Harmony remote to teach it. Once you have created (if necessary) and learned its commands, you can add it to the appropriate activities by repeating the setup for each activity (under "Customize"). You'll have to go through the setup once before it will give you the chance to add devices.
SlackerX 01-30-06, 04:37 PM Can this remote control a Microsoft MCE (Media Center Edition) PC with the standard MCE commands? Is there a provision or "device" control list for this that can be downloaded from Logitech? Thanks.

Can you elaborate on this one? Some say to go back through the wizzard set up but I've done this and I can't find where to check "leave comcast dvr on."
Thanks

Here's what I did:
-- Under Devices, I went to the device (in this case, the PVR).
-- Select "More Options"
-- Select "Advanced setup for this PVR"
-- Selected "Leave Device on all the time"
I then just went through the rest of the screens. As I recall, I had to get the PVR remote and point it at the 520 at one point. But I just did exactly what the screens said. And it seemed to work. The PVR now does not shut off.
Hope this helps.... Brian
dirk1843 02-07-06, 12:11 AM Just got this remote today from a fellow AVS member today.
I really like the activity based functions, except for a couple of, what are to me, quirks.
The first is I hate how it turns off everything not used in each activity. There may be a way to fix this. For example, I use a 563 to play SACD/DVD-A. I have it as an activity of "listen to CD's". I usually leave the TV on for this, but the remote will turn it off. When I turn on a component, I like to leave it on until I power it all down.
The second is the way is somewhat related..........it always puts my HDTiVo in standby. I never have used the standby on TiVo because I like for it record TiVo suggestions.
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it, if not I may not be able to adjust to this remote.
For each activity select "Customize" then "More options", then "Leave unused devices ON"
For your Tivo device, select "More options", then "Power settings", then "This device has no power buttons"
dirk1843 02-07-06, 04:10 PM Thanks czzer........I will give this a try tonight after work!!
dirk1843 02-07-06, 10:17 PM I was doing a search for more info on my troubles and your name came up again czzer......are you the resident expert on this issue??
I did as you said.............TiVo stays on fine, thanks........
BUT........I still have problem with 3 activities turning unused devices off. The activities are 2 for TiVo and one for cable. I am running software version 5.1.2. When I start the software, I get the main or "Home" screen. I see the list of Troubleshoot, Activities, Remote Preferences, Get Support, and Update Remote.
When I choose "Activites" I get the list of my activities. When I click any one of the 3 that are giving me problems, I get this list: Review the settings......, Change the behavior of buttons, Rename, Troubleshoot, and Remove. That is all. When I click on all other activities (the ones I have fixed), there is an extra option of "Change Options). For some reason this does not appear on TiVo, TiVo HT, or Cable as I have called these activities
TiVo is comprised of HDTiVo and TV only.
Tivo HT is HDTiVo, TV and Denon AVR for volume.
Cable is TV only.
I have looked hard at the setup, and can not understand why these three activities don't have the "Change Options" choice.
My other activities that I have fixed are.....
Play DVD is DVD, TV, AVR.
CD Changer is changer and AVR.
Radio Tuner is tuner.
SACDs is SACD player and AVR.
Burn DVDs is DVD recorder, TV, AVR.
XBox is Xbox, TV and AVR.
I can't find any common denominator that would answer my problem. I thought the activities that included the AVR might be the key, but TiVo HT includes the AVR and when I switch to it, the remote powers down everything else still.
Any additional help would be great..........this remote is looking like a keeper if I can figure this last glitch out.
I'm far from an expert, but I'll give it a go!
I haven't personally used the new Java setup that the 520 uses...I've got a 659 myself...so I can't tell you exactly where you would find it.
I would, however, recommend trying the web-based setup. Many 520 users have said they prefer the web setup to the java setup. Just go to http://members.harmonyremote.com and log in. Note you need to use Internet Explorer.
You should start off in your home page, but if you don't there is a link in the top left corner.
On your home page you will see your devices on the left and your activities on the right. You should have a "Customize" link for all your activities. Click that and you will get a screen with a link for "More options" (it might not be called exactly that, but you should be able to figure it out).
If this still doesn't work, give tech support a call.
memnoch2 02-08-06, 01:58 PM while you can program the device to be left on, how about if at the end of your watching session, you want all devices off? does the Off button do this already, or can you add discrete IR "Off" commands to the "Off" "activity"?
dirk1843 02-08-06, 02:01 PM Thanks for the quick reply czzer..........
It seems that a slight difference in the software used for the web based and PC based solutions accounts for the difference. I am going to have to redo my setup it looks like using the web based software. I am so glad I have not put too much time into cutsomizing buttons yet, as I assume that would all be lost when I applied the update from the website.
Thanks again for the help czzer!!
