Bringin back from the dead - I am trying to mount this on sanus VMPL2 mount, since the mounting holes are recessed I presume we need a spacer, yet the included spacers give too much clearance and will result in the tv being at least 1/2" less flush with the wall. Did people create their own spacers or am i missing something?

So I've been the proud owner of a TH-50PHD8UK for a couple of years now.. Anyone know where to find the TH-50PHD8UK blades for HDMi? I remember there being two to choose from (one having a higher bit rate). Just trying to find a trusted Internet-based retailer to buy from...

Anyone?

Most Forum sponsors can get this for you - TY-FB8HM. This board is very reliable and you should have no problem.

Start with Visual Apex, maybe not rock bottom price but top notch customer service.

Thanks for that! This is the one with the best gradation levels right? I thought there were two available and one had lower gradation levels. Just can't remember how many versus how many...

There is also the earlier model TY-FB7HM which is virtually the same unit without 50 Hz PAL 720p support, not a problem for USA users.

Both have the same specs aside from that.

Not a dumb question, however the answers are no and no.

Why, and what can fix that?

The 8UK is not a 1080P panel; it's 768P. Buy a 1080P panel.

There is nothing you can do short of getting an external scaler that can accept 1080p 24 and output 1080i into the HDMI board that you have.

A lot of $$$ for minimal gain in PQ.

Just set the output of the PS3 to 1080i and that will be about all you can do.

The series 8 Plasma did not support 24p except via HD-SDI (TY-FB7HD) so the above scaler with SDI output might work.

However the costs for the board and scaler easily may be more than a series 10 Plasma that accepts 1080p 24 via HDMI.

That's one of the things I like about my Pioneer is that it's able to accept a 1080p 24 input. :)

Has anyone tried outputting 1080P to this display by component, letting the display downscale it? I hadn't thought of trying this until noticing in the display menu for the PS3 that 1080P over component was an available option to try. In the test from the menu, it seemed to display 1080P fine so I selected it, and also unchecked the other lower resolution options.

Also, in the Gran Turismo 5 Prologue game for the PS3, the manual shows 1080P as an available output by either HDMI or component, so I figured I'd give it a try

Setup:

50PHD8UK
PS3 - 80GB using AV Multi-Out w/ Component RGB
Pioneer 1014TX receiver

I was skeptical that this output would be possible on a BD movie because of the content protection issues I've read about, but it seems to be working.

Has anyone else tried this? Am I missing something or is this actually 1080P going in to the display (getting down-scaled)? Is there any menu on this display that identifies the resolution and frame-rate?

There may not be a noticeable difference on this display between 720P in and 1080P in but if it can accept 1080P, then maybe that's best.

Also, I should mention that I haven't tried out GT5P yet.

Thanks,

Kelly.

Bah! I should have ordered a TY-FB8HM when I first decided to get it in March 2008. As of Jan 2009 it's supposedly out of production and no one has any more in stock. :-( I checked with all of the forum sponsors and even started dragging through Google. After an hour of searching I found it at a Canadian retailer for $229 USD when it used to sell for $130-$150 shipped.

Oh well!

How come when you run HDMI to the tv you cant change the picture aspect but when you run COMPONENT you can! Component is just as good as picture as HDMI anyway on this tv. I want to get a ps3 for bluray and it only has hdmi out. Anyone here do this? Does the picture fill the entire screen with bluray movies, I hope so. I dont want bars on top or bottom or the sides! Thats what I like able cable HD movies they are nice and formated.:D

Because component is usually limited to 480p which permits aspect control on these models. If you feed HDMI at 480p, you can also adjust aspect.

However 720p.and 1080i default to FULL mode only and do not permit aspect adjustments. This feature was added in the latest 11 series Pro Plasma and has been in the consumer models for the last couple of years.

If you were to feed component at 720p or 1080i you would not be able to adjust aspect.

I've recently put a TH50PHD8UK tasked to an XBox 360 via DVI, monoprice HDMI -> DVI cable is in use. I could swear that when I used this set with an XBox 360 and a VGA cable, a few years ago, that I could select the 1360x768 resolution, but for some reason this option is not open to me when using the DVI input. The closest I can get is 1280x720. I would prefer to use 1360x768, but would rather not have to use VGA.

I'm wondering if the HDMI connection would be any different? Would it show up with the same resolution options as DVI/VGA, or would I be faced with 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i? Anybody know?

I think that the post before yours explains it best. Using HDMI causes the TH50PHD8UK to lock any HD content into 720P, if I'm not mistaken. That said your image quality should not suffer on the 360.

Well, that is not quite true as I do have several other resolutions available via the DVI blade, just nothing higher than 1280x720. Mind you, the 360 actually states the resolutions when the HDMI->DVI is used there--it doesn't say "720p." It also does not give the option for 1080i either, 1920x1080 shows up in the selection menu but of course won't work as it will only be progressive. The other resolutions do work, just not 1360x768, or 1920x1080. I'm not all broken up over it as it does look very nice. I'm just still curious if this has anything to do with my using DVI instead of HDMI, and if using HDMI only would give different results (720p, 1080i, etc.), or . . . what. And of course I'd rather not spendy on the HDMI blade just to find out so I ask you guys. :D

Nevermind...please forgive my ignorance. I would really like to just erase what I said so I don't look like an idiot, but just in case someone else has this problem, I'll go ahead and give what worked for me.

Make sure you turn the TV OFF before plugging in the new connection. Make both connections, then turn the TV back on. I know this sounds pretty basic, but I did this while I still had the Component cables plugged into the STB, so I'm assuming this was part of the problem.

Anyway, at my expense, I hope this helps someone else! :)
on my ph427uk i had to unplug it then plug it back in before it would recognize the hdmi card.

All new cards or cards changed to another slot require a hard AC reset (pull the plug).
OFF/ON with the remote is a soft AC reset which does not allow the Plasma to "see" the new card. This is true for all models of all series.

Google the net...seem like "local screen failure" which result from SD board (C4 board). Anybody experience with this problem before, please help. Thank you:(:(:(:(
