Sorry I forgot to mention about CableCard.
I do have a CableCARD but I have it unplugged and I believe the TV Guide populated on its own from one of the PBS channels. I am sure it has not used cableCARD for this as I have that unplugged for more than a week.
But I still don't see any info. Strangely it shows only for some shows, like the Orange ball which was going on yesterday. And then still it showed only the start and end time and the Channel Id, but the description was all blank.
The info button without guide displayed, shows the programme information within the channel data itself.
The info button with the guide displayed, shows the programme information within the tvguide data itself, usually tranmistted on a local analogue PBS channel.
I have found that Comcast strips a lot of the channel data out, if you use the OTA, you will usually get the programme information on FOX/CW/MyTV channels. Sometimes I get the programme name, but not very often with cabletv.
With the cablecard, I never got any individual channel data.
Hello:
Just brought home a Hitachi 42HDS69 and am having multiple problems. It's new year's eve and all I want to do is watch a movie and play a few games (sad I know).
So I get a (very nice) picture and sound for OTA TV (standard and HD) and picture and sound on my Oppo with a DVI-to-MDMI cable.
The problems occur with the following components:
Xbox 360 component cables - no picture, just sound
PS3 HDMI connection - no picture or sound
Toshiba HD-XA1 HDMI connection - no picture or sound
I have the latest firmware.
Please, please tell me this is something obvious I have overlooked.
Many thanks, Scott
A quick update (in case anyone is following along with this at home). Further to my problems with Xbox 360, PS3 and HD-XA1 getting along with my new 42HDS69 -
After a chat with a Hitachi customer service rep (you gotta give them credit - this guy - an American, too - was working at 10:00 PM new year's eve!), I tackled the problem with a fresh mind.
After several more hours, I solved the problem. I originally had all three components hooked up to a 1080p LCD display, which the Hitachi is replacing. Thus, all the components were set to higher rez's than the Hitachi could support (at least in the case of the PS3 @ 1080p) The HD-XA1 I had to set video output at 760p to get a picture and sound on the Hitachi (not sure why 1080i wouldn't work) and the Xbox 360 would only produce a picture when I set the switch on its component cable to regular TV (not HD), then set the video output to 760p, then switch it back to HD.
The funny thing is that if I didn't still have the 1080p monitor at home, I wouldn't have been able to get ANY picture on the PS3 to change the video settings.
Don't you love personal electronics?
Best, Scott

Thanks James ! I am satisfied with your answer. I give up and I'll quit fiddling with the remote... guess new years resolution...
Brian Boe 01-05-07, 08:39 PM Just giving everyone an update. Three days after the repair was made the line came back on. This time for at least four hours. (Its still there now) I am getting a little nervous at this point after doing a little more reading about how some of these extended warranties work  Also considering that the repair guy told me that plasmas can't be repaired  Well, back to phone tomorrow to see what's the next step. This kinda sucks after dishing out six grand for a tv and five hundred for a four year extention. What a sucker! :o Maybe we can move this to a separate forum so more people can see it. I gotta believe more people are having these issues. Maybe other people have had success getting things fixed or replaced.
Anyone havin in luck getting the red/green/blue lines on your screen repaired?
Hello All:
I have a 42HDS69 hooked up to a Scientific Atlanta HD set top box via component video. When trying to watch HD programming in the "16:9 Standard 1" setting the picture is about 1" to low and about 1/4 to 1/2" to far to the right. Can someone please let me know how I can adjust this?
Thanks.
Jerry
turkoman1963 01-09-07, 05:41 PM just bought the 42HDX99 with my Delta AMEX Card so I got the two year warranty upped to 3 years. $2450 to my door. It's a great set. Very happy.
JamesMH 01-09-07, 06:02 PM When the anlogue channels via OTA/Cable go dark, how will these tv's such as the 42HDX99/42HDT52 get their TVGuide info?
Has anyone got any info from Hitachi on this? They coming out with a firmware fix, so that the tvs can get data over a digital channel? Otherwise these TVGuide listings haven't got much life in them.
BM98MaSTeR 01-11-07, 01:54 AM So I read a lot of this thread, and it seems the people who bought it really like it, but I was wondering from the people who have extensively compared it to other Plasmas or own other plasma think about it. I hear stuff about weird artifacts (motion degradation, color gradation) and I was wondering if this was noticed by any current owners?

I own the 42hdx62 and the 42hdx99 and I find them to be first-rate plasmas, a notch below the elites, on par with the pioneer pdps and better than samsung and panny models.
have not had any problems at all with the color, screen, etc and love the swivel stand.
DamnWalker 01-15-07, 10:29 AM Hi all! I need help on a possible product substitution switch.
I bought a Directors Series 55hdx62 august 2006, and it had pixellation issues. Eventually, it was replaced by Hitachi. It was all handled by the dealer I purchased the original x62 thru. When the replacement was delivered it was a model 55hdm71. The store said it was a model number difference and they were the same. But research on the web is telling me different. I am no video-phile, and the technical jargon is leaving me confused. Can anyone tell me if the 55hdm71 is an equal swap-out to a 55hdx62? I need technical advice on the differences and performance of the 2. also, is there a tech source that is reliable and trusted to give me help here?
Help!
Marky_Mark896 01-15-07, 10:36 AM It's not the same level of panel I don't believe. Your's was the best version. I'm not sure if the 55hdm71 was released the same year, but I believe it was the consumer grade monitor version of their standard panel.

I would be very interested to know if the video circuity in the "Director's Series" is any different from the others. The X62 series is now available through Sam's Club (I assume it's discontinued), but if the differences are cosmetic only or audio, the price difference is not worth it to me.
DamnWalker 01-15-07, 11:35 AM MarkY_Mark: does consumer panel imply it is not as good as the home theater users panel on the x62? If so, thats one difference i need the store to account for.
Jim Noble: I agree, and if there is a price difference and the m71 is not as good as the x62, somebody owes me some money back.
Thanks for the replies, any info I get is a help.
Marky_Mark896 01-15-07, 11:40 AM DamnWalker, I am not sure. Hitachi's website sucks, and all I could find on AVS, I think they were both 2005 models, and there was some mention of the 55hdm71 being a professional model, but I'm not sure. They have so many different panels and their numbers change so drastically each year that I can't remember all the details. I would try to make the store replace apples with apples though. If I had a directors series, I'd want one for a replacement as well, even if they had to give you this years model. That's what the warranty is all about.
Good luck,
Mark
Can anyone tell me if the 55hdm71 is an equal swap-out to a 55hdx62?
DW - These are not the same. The HDM (Professional line) and HDX (Director's series) series do have their differences. The HDM is only 8-bit/16.7M colors while the HDX is 12 bit/68B colors. You lose the two HDMI connections (HDM has one DVI, HDX two HDMIs). Speakers are also optional on the HDM, not sure if your replacement came with them (if you even need them). And the remotes are waaay different.

NO, not at all.
The 55hdm71 is a monitor, NOT a television, no tuners.
They should have replaced it with an 55HDX99. http://www.hitachi.us/tv/browse/plasma/plasma/55hdx99.shtml
freeky1 01-15-07, 03:24 PM It sounds like the dealer has some explaining to do!

Completely agreed with all those who posted above. The M series is a much lower model and technically not even a TV as mentioned. The X series is the top of the line model worth much more money.
I would like to think the dealer made an error, but I have a hard time believing a dealer wouldn't know the difference between these two sets. In short, the model number is different because it is a different product! As noted above, this years version of the television is the 55HDX99.
tevansavsforum 01-17-07, 12:49 AM I recently got a 42HDX62A for $2000. Given what is on the market today, is this a good value, ie. (picture quality + features)/price ?
The fan is on all the time in standby. I can hear it in a quite room. Is this normal ?
With the IEEE1394 DTVLink can I plug in a std Firewire HDD and record via TVGuide ?
Hi,
I'm looking for Linux modeline setting for Hitachi 42" plasma model 42HDS69.
Manual states it has 1024 x 1080 display resolution.
I know that there are powerstrip, moninfo and videogen methods to get it, but I would rather get a known working setting.
I have looked at mythtv wiki and modeline databases but i could not find modeline for this model.
Thanks,

It's as simple as this: Do you see "Director's Series" written on the panel anywhere?
If not then it is an orange for an apple.

Is it new or refurbished? I got mine for 500 more (incl. tax) in Sept 05.

You need an AVHD, not just a regular HD.

That TV is available for [EDIT] at a bunch of places. It's a great set. My fan is fine. Any dust in there? Otherwise it should be fine.
Kevin S 01-17-07, 08:26 PM Which TV? The 42HDX62? It's last years' model, but even still that is an outstanding price! Nobody carries it around here though. It was over $4K just over a year ago. My HDT was $3500...
Jake_VA1 01-18-07, 01:28 AM I'm thinking about buying a 55HDS69, now that the prices are as low as they are. I'm going to have a viewing distance of about 10 feet under most circumstances. Because the number of HD sources in our area is limited, most of our viewing is in SD.
For any of you that may own the 55HD69, do you have any thoughts on this viewing distance for an SD source? What about for an HD source? I did try this out at a local big box store, and it seemed ok, but I'd really like to hear from people using their sets in less artificial conditions.
Thanks very much in advance,
Jake

I have the 55HDS69 and absolutely love it. I generally view from about 10 to 12 feet away, and it looks great on SD and absolutely amazing on HD. The price was right and I think Hitachi color is as good as it gets.
The fan is on all the time in standby. I can hear it in a quite room. Is this normal ?
The fan might be linked to the TV Guide. If you disable this feature, it might silence the fan when the TV is off.
FYI, I did this to my 42HDT52A when I bought it in mid-last year and have not noticed the fan in standby mode. I was also looking at your model at the time, but found the HDT for $700 less...decision made!
Brian Boe 01-18-07, 06:13 PM Update, They have determined the 55htd51 unrepairable or at least cost wise. A replacement panel is over $3000 plus labor. I am suppose to get the ok for a replacement within a couple of days. The only problem is the 55hdt79 does not have a computer input or i-link firewire input for my jvc dvhs recorder. I'm not sure what my options are from here to get a replacement with the same inputs as the 55hdt51. Seems the newer models have stripped out those inputs. They should replace with similar plasma shouldn't they? Any ideas?
Marky_Mark896 01-18-07, 06:18 PM Does the director's model have the PC input? I think the monitor versions do, but not sure. That's one big reason I didn't go with Hitachi again. I had the 55HDT51 and loved it. Beautiful computer monitor in my living room. Instead I opted for the NEC (big mistake on my part) then the Pio 6070 (perfect replacement for my 55HDT51. Maybe you could get a cash settlement from them for the price of the replacement, and use it on a Pio? Note: don't think I'm slamming Hitachi's tv's, because I loved my 55HDT51. I had to sell it with the house in SC when we moved, so that's the only reason I don't have it today. Great TV it was.
quattro2 01-18-07, 06:31 PM Does anyone out there have a 55HDX99 and just truly not like if for any reason including PQ? Im probably going to pull the trigger on one tomorrow (getting a great deal I think), and im trying to see if there are any glaring reasons that I should wait (like the Flicker, or blacks not being that black). So speak up now! Should I be waiting a month for something better to come down the pike?
Thanks for the help.
Kevin S 01-18-07, 06:59 PM Brian, the X series has firewire. I know of a member on another board that had a one year old HDT replaced with this years' HDX model because he argued he required the firewire input and preferred the all black set. To me, they can't really argue with you since this years models do have some options stripped.
This years' models also do not have a second RF input - this is huge for anybody that uses OTA for HD - it puts the TV back to 1980's technology in having to use an AB switch.
Brian Boe 01-18-07, 07:20 PM Thanks for the input. I didn't know about the RF input. That sucks because sometimes I record 2 different shows/games on my dish network 622 and watch something else live on ant. B. I know I'm probably a little extreme :o
By the way, I bought the 55hdt51 at American tv and they don't even stock a comparable tv (ie.Hitachi55hdx99,Panny58px600,etc.). They do stock the Pioneer 6070 and the salesman said he would try to make it happen but they sell that thing [EDIT] for the 55hdt51. I guess I can hope
Hey Marky Mark, Does the Pio6070 have basically the same inputs as the hdt51.
Another cool feature of the Hitachi is the ir blaster. Do any other manufacturers have that?

If you are dealing with a Satisfusion warranty via Hitachi please search my previous posts regarding my "replacement" experience. Good luck and I hope you do better than I did.
Stevelp 01-25-07, 12:27 PM To make a long story short, I have also been dealing with Hitachi customer servcie becasue of a red line problem. Hitachi told me last week that they needed a few days to get approval to replace the set (of course after a ll the service people came and determined it was not repairable). The service guy said it happens "all the time." Anyway, I called today and still no word.
Here is my big problem: even if they replace the set with a new one, the 55hdt51 has a remote av center and a proprietyary cable attached the av center to the tv. The cable is now buried under my floor as part of the new house construction. further, it is mounted on a wall and no place near for equipment! So i asked Hitachi for the same TV which they do not have of course and no propsoed remedy for my situation. Why do they make a tv with cable that cannot support future tvs!!
Bottom line, still "waiting" to hear what they propose.
Stevelp 01-25-07, 12:34 PM Thanks for the input. I didn't know about the RF input. That sucks because sometimes I record 2 different shows/games on my dish network 622 and watch something else live on ant. B. I know I'm probably a little extreme :o

Brian, as I just posted, I've had the identical problem. I wonder if Hitachi will ever call me back. ?
Brian Boe 01-25-07, 11:14 PM Stephen, just givin an update. I am under extended warranty so I might be in a different dilema than you. I am currently waiting for another call from my dealer as they are waiting to here back from Hitachi. Apparently Hitachi is doing something for them because the tv is not that far out of warranty. My vendor carries the extended warranties in house. They are aware of the problems I have of the missing firewire and computer inputs. Apparently they also took one of the rf inputs out too :( . They said that they would try to get me a pioneer 6070 or a Panasonic 58px600 to pick up the extra inputs. We'll see  . At this point I am waiting to see what they come back with. Suppose to get a call tommorow. Will reply when I hear more.
Marky_Mark896 01-25-07, 11:18 PM Brian, sorry I didn't answer you before, I missed the question. The Pio 6070 has more inputs on it than any other TV I've ever owned. I love everything about this tv (except maybe the picture in picture and TV guide, both of which are crap).

What firmware did you install, and where did you get it?
JamesBB1007 01-31-07, 06:24 AM Brian, et al:
It sounds like everyone is migrating toward the same conclusion. My repair agent is coming today to get my panel. Yes, I have to help him take it off of the wall! He is being advised by Hitachi that it is the "buffer board", too. However, he tells me it's a 95% chance that the panel itself is bad. He said it's going to take several weeks to diagnose. I don't know how this is all going to pan out since I'm out of warranty, but I believe Hitachi will step up to the plate on this issue. The problem is they don't make a comparable product anymore. Since I don't have as much leverage as you guys, what would be my best alternative within the current Hitachi lineup?
What firmware did you install, and where did you get it?
I got the firmware from jbmaudio DownLoads
I screwed up my 55hdx62 by loading this firmware onto it. I know we should not be able to but I renamed DW1UE102.E08 file as DW1uc102.e06 (by looking at the plasmafirmware.bmp) and got it to load. Now my screen has vertical lines and picture is pretty much screwed. But I can still see the picture and access the menu. Even though the plasmafirmware.bmp shows for 55hdx62 the current firmware is DW1uc102.e06 I did not find it in the downloads.
Also it looks like both 55hdt52 and 55hdx62 both possibly use the same firmware(I can be wrong). But now when I try DW1uc102.e06 from 55hdt52 folder it just reports newer version is not found in the MMC card. I think it is a next version number which is preventing me from loading the firmware. If there a way to revert the firmware?
Marky_Mark896 01-31-07, 09:18 PM Was that the 42" firmware you renamed to the name of the 55" firmware? Why did you do that?
Ok, I fixed it by loading the proper firmware but named it so that the current improper firmare thinks it is its next version and it worked.
The improper firmware was DW1UE102.e08. I renamed it to dw1uc102.e06. So I belive it still think it is DW1ue102.e08 as that is what it is. So it was looking for something greater than that.
Now I took the 55hdx62 or 55hdt52 (guess they are same) firmware dw1uc102.e06 and renamed it as dw1ue103.e08 and it detected and took it for upgrade and now the display looks better than before.
Before the image was fuzzy.
I have a 55HDT52. My picture quality is not bad but It could be better. I was wondering if the settings I have might need to be ajusted. Any suggestions. Also how can I find any posts that have been made about the 55HDT52. Thank you for your help.
freeky1 02-03-07, 01:57 AM Here's a question that I have been meaning to ask. When I registered my 55HDS69 on Hitachi's website, they tried to sell me the 5 year warranty on the TV. I had already bought the 4 year warranty from Best Buy for $350. Did I make a mistake? Would I have been better off with the Hitachi warranty? It seems that the Best Buy warranty does not add 4 years to the existing 1 year Hitachi warranty, but starts at day 1 and goes for 4 years. The Hitachi extended warranty would have added 4 years to the original warranty. This seems to mean that I have shorted myself 1 year on the warranty by buying Best Buy's warranty. I am also assuming that if I go through Best Buy for the warranty, they can replace the unit with any brand, if necessary. If I go through Hitachi, they can replace the unit with nother Hitachi only. Also, wondering about people's experience dealing with Best Buy's warranty service. None of this information will really help me, but may help other people in the future.
Kevin S 02-03-07, 12:40 PM freeky1, I am not sure how good Best Buy is with their Warranty, but I would venture to guess you are better off. My experience with my 42HDT52 is that factory warranties are almost completely useless as you have to deal with (sometimes multiple) third party repair shops who can very likely know less than you about your TV. In short, it took me two authorized repair centres and 6 months to get a simple firmware upgrade - Hitachi would not send it directly although their manual contradicts this, and I know others have gotten it directly. In the middle of that mess they also replaced my power supply for what turned out to be absolutely no reason - Hitachi didn't seem to care about this. Yes, you are paying for the first year that you already have, but you have the option of dealing with Hitachi or the store on the issue in that time. It's too late now, but always bargain for a free warranty, or at least that lost year for free - almost all stores will do it. I got a 3 year warranty from the Brick on my dads TV at no cost by simply asking.
I have since bought a 42HDT79 for my father (despite poor customer service with my TV, I really like the set) and bought a 3 year store warranty this time (The Brick). As a side note, I got $400 back through price protection (90 days). The warranty has lemon protection and they will just replace it rather than screw with you.
Most of Hitachi technical support is also no help in my experiences. You can get better response and answers on forums like this than from Hitachi themselves. They didn't even have an idea how their TVGOS works, nor do they understand that you cannot combine an antenna and cable connection into the single RF port on the new HDT79 series (if I would have noticed the elimination of the second RF port, I would have never bought this TV for my father - you don't expect options to disappear from one year to the next). The manual says you can do this, but you cannot - not only will it not work, but it is technically illegal.
Here's a question that I have been meaning to ask. When I registered my 55HDS69 on Hitachi's website, they tried to sell me the 5 year warranty on the TV. I had already bought the 4 year warranty from Best Buy for $350. Did I make a mistake?
Buy an EW from Texas Tapeworks for much, MUCH less. They are a forum sponsor and you can view their prices here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=727816).
Assuming you paid less than $2500 for the 55HDS, a 3-yr extended (after mfr's runs out, so 4 yrs total) is only $130. See Option #8 in the TT thread.
VE has matched these prices in the past, too - doesn't hurt to ask! And I personally can attest to VE's unbeatable customer service! I've sent quite a few family/friends their way...
Please excuse if wrong forum - have Hitachi 55HDT51 - unit "pixelates" during viewing of HD and non-HD source - occurs from 3 different sources -> S-Video DVD, HDMI DVD, DVI Cable. Appears as though unit looses 1/2 to 3/4 of pixel color info and replaces it with whatever red/green/blue is close to it. Seems worse in dark scenes. Randomely syncs back after scene changes. Getting qualified svc is a nightmare. With all the "do not use" ports on the back would think they'd have a diagnostic device to hook up to it - anyway - anyone had similar experiance? Any suggestions? Thanx - robc57
You might want to try a lower level of contrast and bightness.
malfaro15 02-08-07, 01:33 AM Hey all,
I bought my Hitchachi in November which was highly recommended by you all and the Best Buy salesman.
I was dead set on this TV because I was convinced that I would be able to get a 1080p picture with the PS3 on my wishlist.
Bottom line, the PS3 doesn't recognize a 1080p input on my TV and after going back and forth with the store and Hitachi, I understand the TV is somehow "upconverting" the 1080i input to 1080p through the 1080 virtual processor.
Can someone help me understand what the difference is between the 1080p processor and a "true" 1080p input?
Either way, I love the TV and the picture on HD TV and both DVD and BR-DVD.
My only complaint is that the remote is quite slow and the composite cables (for wii) can only be used from the 5th input site (on the side).
Also, does anyone know where I can find the ideal video settings are for this particular model?
^^ Wow, do they ever have YOU going! You should complain to the management that you were sold a TV that could not do what the salesman promised you. I'd demand a full refund, or a free upgrade to a 1080p-capable display - and take the difference out of the salesman's paycheck.
The HDX62 is not a 1080p input-capable display per the specs (http://www.hitachi.us/tv/browse/plasma/pdf/42HDX62.pdf) on the Hitachi website. The panel resolution is only 1024x1024. Did they BB bots suggest that somwhow magic would make the panel into a full 1080p display?? Or did you read this and just assume that it was a 1080p display?
Virtual HD 1080p II digital processor was misleading marketing crap for the 05-06 models. Notice how they changed the name to Hitachi PictureMaster ™ HD III Video Processor for the current models? Hm, no mention of 1080p anymore...wonder why?!?!
Don't get me wrong - that's a great TV you bought, but it's not the latest and greatest as you were led to believe...
Brian Boe 02-08-07, 10:45 PM Brian, et al:
James, sorry I missed your question, I was out of town. Hitachi should stand behind your tv. The best Hitachi replacement would be the directors series 55hdx99, I think. Unless you could get Hitachi to replace it with a commercial panel configured with the same inputs. I don't know if that's possible to do or not. Maybe one of the experts could weigh in on that. Right now I am having a problem with getting a comparable unit (pioneer 6070, it has the 2 ant. inputs and the vga but no firewire and the screen is a little larger) My unit is under ext. warr. but they got Hitachi to do the warranty, that's where my problems started because Hitachi says the 55hdt79 is comparable. I DONT THINK SO. I like others here can't believe that Hitachi has stripped this unit of all its cool features and lowered the price and then calls it comparable. NOT. Good luck with your set.
Digital Puppy 02-09-07, 11:59 AM RE: my 55HDX61 blue line.......They are picking my set up on Saturday (just in time for the championship game on Monday  ) The tech on the phone said it shouldn't really take that long to fix and I will probably have the set back no later than Tuesday. Still not sure if it's the buffer board that they are fixing on mine, but will report back when I know for sure.
Okay, so the shop didn't pick my set up until this past week - day after the Super Bowl. At the time, they said it was going to be a pretty quick fix for them to replace the panel, "burn-in" for 48 hours at the shop and return it to me by the weekend. They are scheduled to deliver the set back to me on Sat, but since they have been very flaky with the pick up and delivery, I'm calling today to confirm the fix and the delivery time.
I'll get the exact wording from the tech and post an update.
(By the way, in the past week or so, my set developed a Red line on the opposite side of the screen to where the Blue line was....)
Marky_Mark896 02-09-07, 12:02 PM You sure you're not just watching hockey on that set :D (Get it? Blue line, red line)...I know, I'm a dork...
Digital Puppy 02-09-07, 01:57 PM ...just got off the phone with the repair place...they replaced the panel on the set and got rid of the lines. But they tell me that there is still an apparent "electrical issue" that caused the initial problem that they are tracking down.
They will be getting back to me with an ETA of fixing and delivering.....We'll see.
ricktillis 02-09-07, 07:28 PM Just tell them it's a lemon and you want a new tv. If there's several different problems then they should just replace the tv.

I'm actually really quite fond on my Director's Series HDX61. It has a media box that I use to plug a bunch of my sources into which is something the new "99" series doesn't have.
This repair shop is incredibly unprofessional...but I am biting my tongue until I have my set back. My dealership is livid and they are going to stop referring customers to them - of course that doesn't help me (If anyone is in L.A. and needing a repair shop, just PM me and I'll tell you who not to go to.)
einhorn 02-11-07, 09:41 AM This seems to be the time to buy a plasma, with the Christmas rush, Superbowl, etc all gone, and new models about to arrive.
I'm seeing big discounts on all, especailly the Hitachi, since I believe they end the 55" series this year.
First question, especially for my fellow Canadians/Quebecers. What have you seen, and where to buy? Theres a big discount at Futureshop on the 69, but I've seen a bigger discount on the 79 at a Quebec based retailer. If I can find the 99, the Director's series at anywhere near the same price, maybe I'll consider snapping that one up.
Second question, at the same time, its being pointed out by friends that the Pioneers are being discounted also, so that a 50" Pioneer is almost in the same range. Is there a thread comparing the merits of the various models/brands?
Third question, one of the key buying factors that I'm not certain we emphasize enough is reliability and longevity. I know that Hitachi is an old, and well established brand. But can anyone comment on the reliability of the Hitachi plasmas recently? I know, some will say that they all give problems at times. Consumers reports says that flatscreens have now reached the reliability level of CRTs, but also state that there's not enough historical data to compare brands. I believe that if someone compiled recent data, they'd find that there are some brands that have repair rates (within first year, two, etc) easily double or triple that of other brands.
malfaro15 02-15-07, 01:46 AM Mak,
Thanks for the insight and as much as I'd like to take the TV back just on principle, I love the TV enough to not bother with all the hassle. Shame on me for not doing better research on it before whippin out that AMEX card huh?! Thanks again.
But i guess the question still stands...How does the 1080 v processor work?
Thanks again!

But i guess the question still stands...How does the 1080 v processor work?
Mark - I honestly don't know. But this might be the culprit which produces the dreaded "flicker" on certain Hitachi models. My own 42HDT52A has this flicker (since July '06), and I just got the buy-back offer yesterday from Hitachi after many phone calls. I will take the $$ and buy the 42HDX99 as it has a flilcker-fix firmware available...
I agree the HDX's are great TVs, so keep enjoying yours! :)
I'm hoping to get some guidance here regarding an intermittent buzzing on my panel. I'm reaching my boiling point.
I purchased my HDS52 in August of '05. All was great for the first year. Then, this past October I began to notice a loud, intermittent buzz from the back of my set. Sometimes there's no buzz at all, then suddenly the buzz appears for several hours...only to suddenly disappear for hours or days.
Although I was 2 months out of warranty, Hitachi stepped up and agreed to cover the repair costs, recognizing this was not normal. The tech came to my house, heard the buzz, and immediately diagnosed it as the power supply.
The service center picked up the set, kept it for 3 weeks, replaced the power supply, and returned it to me. That night, the buzz re-appeared almost instantaneously. Back to the shop it went for 2 more weeks. I got a call from the service center this week saying they tested the set for 4 days and heard nothing. They returned the set to me on Thursday.
Naturally, Thursday night, the buzz re-appeared to a maddening level. I have kept Hitachi in the loop every step of the way, and they have been very helpful. The service center was putrid on many levels, but that's a different story.
So, I am at my wit's end here. Hitachi referred me to a different service center to hopefully get some better service, although based on my initial contact with this center, I'm skeptical. So I'm hoping to get some guidance from the folks here. I've seen other reports of buzzing, and I have read that a power conditioner may help. That may be my next and final step, before I begin to pressure Hitachi to replace the unit.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.
Does anyone notice blanking out on the unscrambled channels? I've been observing this since I bought the tv but have been ignoring it largely. Sometimes the channels blanks out momentarily(like a few seconds) every 5 minutes or so sometimes even less. It is kind of annoying when a nice movie is playing
Anyone else observe this?

Does anyone know how to get the 42HDS52 into service mode? I can't find any detailed specs (other than that the resolution is 1024x1024) on the TV. I'm having a heck of a time interfacing it with my custom STB.

Have you tried the "menu-menu-8 select" sequence with the remote control? It very often takes several attempts before it takes...
Also see the specsheet here (http://www.hitachi.us/tv/resource/prod_archive/pdf/42HDS52.pdf) .

I tried a few times and it didn't work. But I tried a few more and it does pull up some cryptic menus, but doesn't give me the info I need. I'm trying to find out the refresh limits and pixel clock limits, which don't appear on the specs at all. Doing a modeline for this set is a nightmare. It either works and it sized improperly, or it doesnt sync at all.

antarutin 03-14-07, 09:33 PM Hi everybody! I have a problem as you might have guessed, my hds52 has IR blaster option so I have built me a tv cabinet and hid all the components behind soloid doors. Needless to say tv remote does not have codes for my components: Pioneer dvr and Onkyo reciever. When I try to controll components with their original remotes signal passes only if the remote is no more than a foot away from the tv. If anyone recognizes that problem please help and one more thing if I was to buy "universal" remote what are the chances it will not have same issue? Thank you.
Digital Puppy 03-23-07, 03:18 AM Well, today, I ended my pursuit to fix the Red/Blue line problem in my 55HDX61. To recap:
- Developed a Red Line in October '06 and reported to my local shop & Hitachi
- Hitachi puts me in contact with a authorized service shop to fix the set.
- Shop waits for parts from Hitachi before picking up broken set. This was around 2 months.
- Shop fixes first line problem, but tells me the thing that cause the line problem in the first place needs to be fixed - something about a board. Parts need to be ordered from Hitachi again. The parts take another week and a half to get to the shop.
- Second problem is fixed - the shop wants to 'burn in' the set for a couple of days before delivery. Delivery is scheduled for 2 days after all problems were fixed.
- The morning of delivery, I get a cal from the shop saying that the panel failed again!
- The shop contacted Hitachi and Hitachi agreed to replace my HDX61 with the current Director's Series HDX99.
- About a week and a half later, my HDX99 was installed.
This is the Cliff's Note version of my story, but I wanted to at least wrap it up. The moral to the story: Thank goodness for the Director's Series 2-year warranty and strong advocates at my local shop.
The picture looks very good - I will even say better than the 61 picture....It could just be I haven't seen a TV on my wall in months, but I'm pretty sure the 99 looks better.
To all of those people having problems with the Red/Blue line issue, make sure you document all conversations and be very insistent with what you want. Anyway, thanks for reading.
malayvaghela 03-23-07, 11:15 AM i had the same problem like yours, developed 2 red lines on eash side and hitachi was not able to fix that, so replaced with 55hdx99...... which a far better tv set than the old one....

Glad this worked out for you - remember that the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Not sure which 32" panel yuo mentioned as those pesky mods swooped in and did some stealth editing... :p
Good luck w/ your next purchase! I have my new 42HDX99 still sitting in the box, haven't had the time to get it up and running just yet. But at least I bought one before they were all gone...didn't care for the looks of the new models (PxxT501) or the reduced features (ie, color decoding).
mrerikcollins 04-20-07, 10:39 PM Hello -
I just purchased a 42HDT52 and I am attempting to hook up my PS3 to the HDMI input. I connected it to HDMI input one, had nothing connected into the av input one jacks, and no picture is coming up. It is as if the TV is not recognizing the PS3. The cable is brand new but it will not find the signal. Anyone have any idea what can be done?
Also, how do i know what firmware I have and if it is upgradable? Thanks!
jakenasty 04-21-07, 06:04 AM have you tried holding down the power button on the ps3? it should beep a couple of times and automatically detect which output (hdmi) to go to.
drivin24 05-03-07, 11:20 PM I love my 42 inch Hitachi so far, wife bought it for me last weekend. I have a couple really stupid questions though and bear with me I just upgraded from a 32 inch Sanyo Wal-Mart special.
1) Does the HD1080 "emblem" on the bottom left of the front come off? I don't want to pick at it if it is supposed to stay on but I'd much rather take it off.
2) Does the stand it comes with swivel? My wife said the one at the store swiveled and the salesman led her to believe it did but we can't get it to rotate.
Thanks for all the info., I can tell I'll be spending a lot of time around these parts!
Oh yeah BTW we watched the Fellowship of the Ring last weekend and I didn't notice any flicker issues...hopefully I got a set that doesn't have this issue.
decatab 05-07-07, 07:38 PM I've searched this thread but have not found this topic discussed.
I have an HDT52 that I'd like to control with a universal remote. I'd like to be able to push one or two buttons from one remote control to switch from DVD player to cable STB to WII without having to find the Hitachi remote and change the input. Ideally, an All On (or Both On) button could be programmed to turn on the devices as well.
I find it frustrating to have to select the input button then move the arrow down to find the appropriate input.
Has anyone used/programmed any of the Logitech Harmony remotes to work like I wish? Any other candidate universal remote that could work?
Thanks.

Thanks, mak99. Please clarify. Can the Harmony 880 be programmed so that you can select the input to the HDT52 using one button push? If I can get it to do that so that I can switch from different inputs at a touch of a button, I can get over the $$$ price. (can you say father's day gift!!)

Just set up the activities correctly, and when you click "watch tv" or "watch dvd", it will select the correct input for you.
Just make sure you set up everything correctly in the web-based wizard.
Plague87 05-09-07, 08:28 PM I have a 42HDS52 that I'm thrilled with. The only problem is that I cannot permanently shut off the speakers on the Television. I disable the 'internal speakers' in the Audio menu. The next time the TV is powered on, the internal speakers are enabled (This also happens with the Swivel feature).
I don't have these problems with the Video options menu - once set, they seem to remain at their programmed settings through a power-sequence.
Is there any way to setup the Audio menu options and save them permanently or is there at least a disrete code to disable the internal speakers that I can setup in my remote so that any time the set is powered-on, the speakers can be disabled?
sp0000n 06-14-07, 03:44 PM I have a p50h401 display which I am reasonably happy with, the picture quality seem very good even if the blacks could be better. I haven’t been able to find many tweaks or tips for this set here or anywhere just some initial buzz form its launch at CES. My main concern is it doesn’t offer any customization for its aspect zoom settings. I thought maybe someone had a trick in the ‘service menu’ or elsewhere to adjust them, I would like to eliminate the under-scan from the Wii and PS2 games my girlfriend plays, she isn’t overly concerned with picture quality so if I could stretch them to avoid image retention I would like to. Thanks for your time.

How about turning the TV speakers sound down to ZERO?? I assume you are listening thru external amp + speakers?
Anyone know how to access the service menu for a p50h401?
madymo3d 07-25-07, 11:01 AM How does the 42HDS52 compare to newer Hitachi's and latest plasma/LCD/1080p (brand name and generic)? I've read through much of this thread and it seems like this unit is well liked, but that's 2+ years ago. A guy locally is selling his lightly used unit for less than $700 with 2 more years of extended warranty left. I'm wondering if it's worth the money to buy it. If not then I'll probably get an LCD soon in the future. But if it's a worthwhile purchase I'd hold off on the LCD for a couple more years...thanks.
nitinbhai 08-22-07, 07:21 AM I purchased hitachi plasma model 55pd8800 around 15months before. I was watchin movie and suddenly some days past due to some electricity fluctuation my display went off, i was only able to hear noise no display.
on contacting the mechanic he told me the prob is with power supply board and he took the board with him saying will try to repair it if not repaired the new board will cost around 600USD + labor.
I wanted to know in this case is really the problem with power supply board and does it cost so huge amount ie. 600USD.
PLEASE HELP.....
Hi,
I have an intermittent problem with this ~2year old unit. The unit randomly turns itself on. This is most common at night but it has happened during the day while we are sitting in the room. It always defaults to the HD mode. When I use the manual switch, there is no problem.
The forum includes cases of units turning off, but I can't find any powering up problems.
My thought is that there may be a minor power disruption and the unit recycles. I'll try a power conditioner/UPS next.
Has anyone had this or a similiar problem??

My TV is HDMI & DVD is Component. I spoke to Hitachi, fast answer & courteous, yesterday & was told I would have to connect to a separate TV Input. No "program" & OSD at the same time.
What Input do you use?
Do you use S-video or Composite for the OSD feed?
Or is everything fed through you Receiver which has HDMI to TV?

Sorry for the delay in answering - I've been away from the board for a while so I didn't see your question.
I have everything running to my Denon receiver and then a single HDMI cable run to my Hitachi. Again, I can indeed access the OSD as well as every other menu functions - including the net radio which I use almost daily.
adamo12 11-19-07, 07:57 PM I started getting a problem on my plasma 55HDT52 in that the fan was constantly running 24 hours a day even when the TV was shut off. I would have to turn the master switch off and essentially turn the tv off and out of standby mode if i didnt want the fan to run
I tried turning the TV Guide feature off but this did not solve the problem.
I called Hitachi service in Canada and a technician came over and did a factory reset and also turned the TV Guide feature off and the voila the problem has now been solved.
Hope this helps...Adam

I have a 55hdt52 plasma. I have had it 2 years now. Today while my girlfriend was watching it the picture froze. So she turned off the main power switch at the bottom of the set.
When I turn back on the main power button, it goes into Stand by (Red Light) - however there is nothing I can do to get it to fully power on. Have tried both the remote and the side "Power" button to no avail.
Have also unplugged it for 30 minutes with no difference.
Any suggestions?
I called Hitachi and they suggested I needed a service call.
Thanks.
hadrion 01-10-08, 10:31 PM Hey guys,
I switched from cable to Fios and the picture on my 55HDS52 didn't look great. It looked like it needed some tweaking since the cable picture was a little more color saturated to my liking.
I went into the video menu to play with some settings and when lowering my contrast to zero, the entire screen went green.
I freaked out and powered off the set, when I turned it back on the picture was normal again since it reverted to the previous video settings.
My question is this; is it normal for that to happen when you drop the contrast to zero for just a moment?
I've had this model since January 06 and had zero problems with it. Not even a flicker problem.
I just want to make sure I didn't just screw up my plasma by lowering the contrast or if this is a sign of a brewing problem.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
NeonJediKnight 02-26-09, 01:32 AM Gee... These models of Hitachis must not be that popular since the last post about any of them was made about a year ago.
But anyway...
I have a 42" 42HDF52 that I've had for going on 4 years. I haven't had any
problems with it except for it having the tuner messed up in it for the first couple of days(I'm not even going to detail about what trouble I had with both the store and Hitachi to fix it) and short term image retention a few times. What I was really wanting to know was, just how much more life this set has in it.
The image settings:
Picture Mode: Natural
Brightness: 48
Contrast: 70
Color: 30
Tint: 52
Sharpness: 0
Color Temperature: Warm
The Advanced settings:
Gamma: 1.0
Move Screen Mode: Mode 2
Move Screen Time: 5 seconds
I've kept the aboove settings to what they are since I've owned it. Whether the room is bright or dark I seem to be pleased with the picture quality. The above mentioned image retention was caused by the Move Screen feature being turned off.
I'll also add... This set sits oppisite of about a 7' window. It has a venetian blind in it, which I keep the flaps closed, but can still get sunny inside during the day(plan on having a curtain custom made). Is it good for this TV to be exposed to this much sunlight? I don't have another option of placing the set somwhere else due to how the house is built. I also have bad a habit of falling asleep while I'm watching it, ever since I've owned it and thus it stays turned on for longer than needs be. I know this can be hard on it. I try my best to turn it off when I feel sleepy, but more often than not it stays turned on.
The only complaints I have about this set, is that it doesn't have a second set of YPbPr inputs or an HDMI input(I'd like to get a Blu-ray player and with HDMI would probably get the best picture quality). I hope this plasma has something seriously go wrong with it in a hurry so I can get another one with the extra inputs and a bigger screen.

I am also able to access OSD from my Marantz receiver connected via HDMI to my 55HDX99. I did have a separate video cable attached specifically for OSD, but I removed it, and the OSD function was not affected.
my avc unit crapped out on me, is there anyway to connect my cbale box to this monitor directly???????????????????? the monitor uses dvi cbale and an 8-pin din......but i can't get it to work, any ideas?
