Sorry I cannot help you out. I don't have that disc to try out for you. Hopefully someone else will chime in here...

I have not tried Queensryche DVD-Audio on my new 79avi. When I get back from a fishing trip I'll test it out and hopefully have an answer by the weekend.

Sorry that it's taken me forever to get back to you but I'm happy to say that Empire DVD-A is playing fine in the new 79AVi. I threw it in last week after quickly connecting the Pio and rifling through the menus but couldn't get it to play (or my Eagles/Hotel California DVD-A). The problem was a strange DVD-Audio default setting that was grenading playback. I spent some time today and can confirm it was definitely an RTFM issue.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Do you recall the setting that you're referring to? I tried the Empire DVD Audio again today and I cannot get it to play the high resolution tracks. It will not boot up or allow me to play dvd-a tracks. The display reads "dvd-audio" but I get no sound through the 5.1 connection. I was able to use the "home menu" to select dvd video instead of dvd audio and then it read the disc. I was able to play the music in 5.1 sound (through the 5.1 input and the dvd input), but it's DD 5.1, not DVD-A.

I'm not having problems with any other DVD Audio (including Hotel California), except for this title. Can you confirm that you were definitely getting DVD-A sound and not DD 5.1? Thanks for all of your help. I guess it's not a big deal, just more of a curiousity thing at this point. Mike

Anyone using the 79avi as a DVD transport (480i HDMI)?

Wondering if there was a firmware fix that adressed the core video issues the Secrets found back in the day. It failed most of the tests which the 59avi passed!

The 79AVi is still my main player , 1080i up-converted.

I find that it is most adequate for my present needs , although in time I will be looking for a 3D compatible player when I get a 3D TV.

You have adjustments on the `79 , just play around with them , it may help if your having issues.

I use the 79AVi in my system for audio (connected via firewire to an SC-09TX) and the 59AVi for DVD source direct 480i. My Panny blu-ray player is just for BD sources.

Actually I was considering getting a used 79AVi since my 59AVi refuses to handshake with my Anthem processor. But I don't want something with CUE bugs or fails the core video measurements.

If I had both, and my 59 worked, this is what i would do. Great setup!

True , the "chroma bug" is still there , but no where near as bad as my old ( and sold ) DV-09.

Now that was off , even after I did the hardware / firmware up-grade , that was money wasted.

Atleast the `79 you can work with , to a certain degree... it won`t be perfect , but I can live with mine.

For now !! ;)

Waiting for 3D players and XBR929 , maybe the Oppo.

Later ,

Hello all,

I am looking for a volunteer with a mac computer, firewire cable, and the 79avi to test the ilink implementation for me. I have a yamaha dvd-s2500 and have written a program which communicates with the player over firewire. The 2500 implementation is pretty basic and limited.

What I want to determine is the capabilities of the pioneer.

If you are willing and interested, pm me.
You will need to download and install apples free firewire sdk, and I will send you a command line program to run which will print info to the console. Just copy/paste the results here/email/pm. Pretty simple stuff.

I'm thinking of picking up a pioneer, but dont want to waste my time/money.

thx

I know... this is an old thread. But I just wanted to let those who might be interested and still have a 79AVi.... I recently traded a couple of older Elite players (PD-65 and modded DV-37) for a 79AVi modded by Stephen Sank. I highly recommend his work. This is the second player of his that I've owned. His prices are VERY competitive and he does far more work to the innards of his players than most do... and most of his work is done to Pioneer Elites. I couldn't find a player that beat my modded DV-37... new or old, and even tried a couple of DACs to no avail.... the DV-37 beat them all. The 79AVi is better than the DV-37. I don't see myself parting with it until either I croak or a newer and better format (besides CD, DVD-A, and SACD) come along.

Replace the former flagship Elite DVD player DV-79AVi DV-59AVi, the retail price of $ 1600, it has an additional function of the number. Pioneer, like SACD and the general disc only for i.LINK output before the output of two or six-channel analog jacks convert the DSD data to PCM channel audio, SACD players, the number of other manufacturers. The without do so 79AVi of retained until the DSD signal is converted to analog (the "SACD Direct").
