Same model.
As always.
It's not the first time and it definitely won't be the last time you assisted me and others. :)
Thanks again for your time D-Nice.
Why would you do that? I have a Denon 3910 and would gladly do a trade with you....if you really wanted to get the 3910.
I just thought the 3910 would be better due to secrets review of the 79avi.
I just thought the 3910 would be better due to secrets review of the 79avi.
No offense to Kris and Secrets, but you should not look to them to decide which DVD player is better than another due to their test criteria.
They score strictly by test patterns. None of their scores take into account actual PQ tests. If they did The Oppo 971 would have never made a 97.
Can the Sony NS975V output 480i over HDMI as well. Is it the same model?
I could be wrong but I don't think either do 480i over hdmi....I know the ns90v doesn't.... i have that one.
The NS975 will. For some reason, Sony did not include that feature with the replacement NS90.
I'll try the 79avi for another week before i decide.

You're right... I thought you guys were talking about the NS75h.
kpotter 03-29-06, 09:32 PM I also stated in that post that the TV was fairly new at that point. I still don't know exactly how easily the screen would burn if it had been aged. My contrast setting was 20 at the time - which is low.
Other people have already mentioned that Plasmas really aren't for video games for that very reason.
Thanks for clearing up what your settings were...
So i already knew that one must properly break-in a plasma with the first 100-200 hrs but after that break-in period would I be ok to play videogames on a plasma?
I mentioned that I am a former SHARP AQOUS owner but now have been looking at pioneer plasmas. At stores I have asked around and came to the conclusion that image retention isnt a big issue if properly aged; but it seems that people here seem to disagree.
Are there any PDP-4360HD owners willing to tell of their experiences with videogames systems (PS2, Xbox) on their plasma. I would really appreciate stories of image retention, picture quality, etc. I play a lot of metal gear solid or gran turismo type games, are these risk factors?

You may want to edit your "burn-in" wording to "image retention" as no one has ever reported "true" burn-in on a 4360/5060/930/1130 ;)
kpotter 03-29-06, 09:50 PM Thanks D-Nice just corrected it...
Good to know that no true burn exists on these pioneer's, quick question just how long does "washing out" image retention take with the dvd? (already found the file to burn on the forums)

I have a PDP-5060HD and from my experience there is some image retention when playing games. Depending on how long I was playing, the IR was gone anywhere from 2-12 hours. I have my contrast set for 25 for video games and my brightness to 1.
That said, PS2 looks ok, GC and X-Box look good, and X-Box 360 looks stunning on this tv.
Thanks D-Nice just corrected it...

You shouldn't have image retention with DVDs....unless you leave it on pause/ main menu for an extended period of time.
kidziti 03-29-06, 11:27 PM I have a question re: Moto 6412 settings and the 1130. I know this was eluded to a few posts ago, but was hoping to read a more complete answer. My 6412 setup is as follows:
TV Type 16:9
YPbPr Output 1080i
4:3 Override 480i
- Other options for TV Type are 4:3 Letterbox and 4:3 Pan & Scan
- Other options for the Component out (YPbPr) are 720p, 480p and 480i - the latter which locks out the 4:3 Override setting.
- Other options for 4:3 Override are 480p, Stretch and Off
I have messed with the settings a bit but it seems the ones I posted above work best so far. I'm wondering what others are using. Ideally, I would think 6412 settings closest to pass through (whatever those settings actually are) is best, since the purportedly better scaler in the Pioneer would be handling the video processing rather than the Motorola. Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated!
drsiebling 03-30-06, 10:00 AM A quick question to those of you who have gotten past the 200 hour break-in period:
Are you still seeing any image retention? I'm very close to 200 hours on my 1130 and have not, as of yet, seen any image retention at all. I've been very careful with the panel, but want to make sure that at 200 hours, I am in good shape to start watching 2.35:1 content without having to fear serious image retention or burn in.
I'm using D-Nice's most recent break-in settings.
Thanks to everyone, especially D-nice, for all the tireless work that is put into this forum. You've all been fantastic!
Currently I have the silver stand that comes with the 4360. Eventually I will get the PDK-1013 stand. However for right now do you think it's ok for me to have the center speaker placed on top of the silver stand underneath the TV for audio? I was just a bit concerned about the vibrations maybe damaging the inner workings of the TV.
Thanks.
Is it ok for me to place the center speaker there?
drsiebling 03-30-06, 11:31 AM Is it ok for me to place the center speaker there?
I can't see any reason why it would be a problem. I've got my center channel right in front of the stand and I haven't had any adverse effects.

My cabinet is not that wide to have it placed in front of the tv stand, so I was wondering if it could actually be placed on the stand in front.
Do you think that's still ok?
windrockwater 03-30-06, 01:11 PM Does anyone know if i can use Input 1 with HDMI and input 3 with Component? (Or vise versa)?
The reason is that i want to connect my DVD changer using a HDMI cable to one of the inputs. The other input has a 4-1 component auto-switch with the cable stb, xbox and a single dvd player connected.
By the way i just finished installing the 1130hd above my fireplace using a chieftech mount and it looks AMAZING. Granted, it is a little high up but the aesthetics and WAF are undeniable. I also recently connected a sony 400 DVD changer and the new XBox with great results. The picture on Ghost REcon is simply jaw - dropping.
Just about everything i have connected is working perfect including my HTPC via vga cable. I only need to settle on the wiring connections layout and switching. Also, i am using the plasma speakers as a center channel with very satisfactory results. Obviously they are not high wattage speakers but again the WAF is great and i had no room to mount a separate center channel above or below the plasma.
One other note: after a few months i am still so happy with the purchase. The black levels are amazing imho. The colors are so rich with some content. I coudnt be happier, unless it was 60" :)

I started watching 2.35:1 content after reaching the 100 hour mark (and I was at 176 hours a week ago or so). I have not had any problems. Please note that I have varied my viewing, such that I am not watching back-to-back movies on "extra" wide screen aspect ratios. Although I have noticed a small bit of IR after using my 5060 as a computer monitor, it seems to go away within minutes of watching TV and/or videos.

My pq settings are in my sig. I have the 6412 rev 3 also. Set for 1080i and 480i, same as you. I prefer a sharper picture, which I think using 1080i provides. Setting to 720p makes things look a little soft to me, and I dont like the results of using the display's sharpness controls to try to work around that.

Yes, you can use either HDMI or Component on Inputs 1 or 3. You just need to set the menu item appropriately to turn HDMI on/off. In fact, I believe that you can actually use both HDMI and Component on those inputs, but would have to switch the menu selection to "toggle" between them (i.e. both HDMI and Component would not be active on Input 1 at the same time, but you can toggle back and forth).
I also have my 5060 mounted over the fireplace and it has high WAF. I plan to post some pictures of my project from start-to-finish, but have not quite finished hiding the wires to my satisfaction.

So I can use HDMI on one input and component on the other at the same time without having to continually go to the settings and enable/disable hdmi?

yes
jacksonian 03-30-06, 02:52 PM I just wanted to comment on the image retention issue. I have a 5050 and a 4360, and I've never had IR with either one. And I'm a TiVo/DVR user and have left the Now Showing screen on for up to a half an hour before and have watched plenty of things in 4:3 mode. So I'm not discounting the reports here, but I wanted to offer the other side of the coin. I'm not really careful about how/what I watch at all, and I've never seen a trace of IR.
Aggie76 03-30-06, 03:47 PM I've searched through the thread and am pretty sure that the answer is "no", but has anyone discovered a way to delete unwanted OTA channels out of the MR memory? I'm not talking about hiding them in the TV Guide, but removing them so that they don't appear when I hit "CH Up/Down". Any chance that this is possible via the service menu?
Although I knew before I bought the TV that it was a design flaw, I still find it ridiculous that a state of the art $5000+ TV can't do something my 13 year old $190 13" Philips TV can.
Anyone have an answer to this yet? I've got my local dealer contacting the Pioneer rep directly on this same question for my new 5060HD set. There's too much trash out there that I don't want my kids running across when surfing.
They only issue I have had with IR on my 1130 is when using my HTPC. My 1130 probably has over 200 hours on it and even with the contrast at 25, stationary icons on my Windows desktop (like My Documents folder) and the white right scroll bar from IE (which I use all the time to view this forum :D ) leave IR that takes several hours or more to remove using a full white screen. If I didn't remove the IR occasionally I am not sure whether I would eventually get burn-in but I do it as a precaution. Anyone have an idea if this is even necessary?

I talked to several different Pioneer support people and they all say there is no way to delete channels.

That's unfortunate. Maybe we could push Pioneer to offer up a firmware update sometime in the future? (I'm not holding my breath though). I've been doing a lot of direct inputting of the DTV channels as a work around and will eventually program "Favorites" button on my MX-500 for the first time ever.

been a pet peeve of mine since day one. and while they're updating the firmware, i'd love a way to add a digital channel to the list. one of our local PBS stations broadcasts three different sets of content, but not all three at once. i had to decide which ones i wanted and live without the rest. if they can't let us directly add channels, how about a way to let the receiver find new channels without throwing away the old ones.
also, i would like it to dispense money and snacks appropriate to whatever show i'm watching. :p

Thanks, I just got an email back from Pioneer Technical Support with the same news. Hard to believe they wouldn't offer that basic option on this set.

Just bump up the contrast and or brightness to your taste - otherwise the break in settings work fine after break in.
And your English is fine - much better than my Chinese! :)
ok.im too lazy to search 2 thousand possts to ask this, but can someone tell me the procedure to enter the service menu for the 5060, and also if overscan can be adjusted. thanks.
gaitherb 03-31-06, 03:40 PM I just purchased a PRO 930 and a PRO 1130. The 1130 is in the family room of the house and it works amazingly. The 930 on the other hand is in our bedroom and there appears to be a problem with it; the closed caption display won't go away! I've repeatedly called the installer/retailer and we have gone through the manual step by step on how to turn the captioning on and off.... that didn't work. So, the installer/retailer indicated that the problem may be with the cable company and their box (Comcast). So, I had Comcast perform a service visit and they indicated it's the Plasma. Has anyone run into this problem, not being able to get the closed captioning display off? The captioning is only on certain channels. Thanks for the help.

Have you tried running the cable direct into the TV, bypassing the cable box? I recognize that there will probably be a large number of channels you won't receive via that connection manner, so I'm not suggesting it as any kind of "fix", rather it's just a way to possibly determine if the cable box is indeed involved in the problem by temporarily removing it from the mix.
How is the 1130 connected? AFAIK the only difference between the 930 and 1130 is the screen size so there shouldn't be any operational differences between the two.
ssabripo 03-31-06, 05:29 PM Why would you do that? I have a Denon 3910 and would gladly do a trade with you....if you really wanted to get the 3910.
you are not serious, are you?
PQ is close between the two (search the DVD forums, I posted it a while back), but the Denon's Audio will be a significant improvement over the 59avi/79avi
But hey...if you really wanna downgrade, it's all good :p :D
ajaveri 03-31-06, 05:49 PM I have a question, i own the Pioneer Elite 930 and wanted to know if the built-in tuner is in the actual plasma display or if its in the media receiver because i read the following on plasmabuyingguide.com and it got me a little worried:
What are the benefits of not having the tuner built in the television (monitor)? Changing broadcast standards is the major reason. If the tuner is not built into the display you will have the option of newer and better technologies and standards in the future. This is one of the reasons that incoming signals for very high-end plasma and LCD displays are decoded through outboard options. Keeping the price down on the display is another. TVs with the tuner built in (or with the outboard decoder included) normally sell for at least 20% more.
If the tuner is built in to the TV itself, can that be a problem for the long term??? Please let me know, thanks a lot. Similarly, my girlfriend is buying a 26" or 32" LCD and is probably going to buy a HD ready tv without a built-in tuner...is their any reason why i should tell her to spend more for the HD built in??? Please help..thanks a lot.
mefromfl 03-31-06, 06:36 PM I have a H20 direct tv reciver connected to my pioneer 4360 via hdmi, can i get optical output from the pioneer MC? i have enabled digital out for the h20 and have enable for the hdmi on the MC. youre kidding right??? panasonic SM procedures are all over this forum...is pioneer special?
Woodrow 03-31-06, 08:18 PM He is not kidding.
From this point forward, no SM codes may be posted in the open forum. Check Bruzzi's thread in the display calibration forum section for service menu codes. He's put a lot of work into it. See here:

Be sure and read the first two posts entirely.
Ok, I got into the service menu. I was able to find the hours on my media receiver, how do I find the hours on my panel? Could someone PM me some help? Thanks, Norm
pluturi 04-01-06, 11:54 AM I went to the Bruzzi site, but only found codes for 5060, not 1130. I tried the 5060 code on my 1130, but nothing happened. Am I doing something wrong, or are the codes different? All I'm interested in is panel hours. Thanks.
allaboutmojo 04-01-06, 11:59 AM I have a new Pioneer 1130 and was wondering if I should use the UPS?
Actually, I have an APC 800 with a Max Load of 800VA-540W that is plugged into wall and a Monster Ref Power Center HTS 3500 plugged into it and the TV and other equipment plugged into the Monster Power Center. I am having trouble with UPS which I am obviously overloading...so I am planning on connecting Monser Power Center directly to Wall since ups not needed for other equipment and leaving just TV/Media center on USP. Dows this sound right?

how have people fared on here using motorola cable cards with 5060's? my mom is in arizona and the cable guy came out and put a motorla cable card in and the thing would not work. you could look at the diagnostics on screen and it recognized the card, yet none of the digital channels would come in and the tv would not rescan channels. anyone else had problems with cable cards and the 4060/5060??? thanks in advance.

Any chance Pioneer will drop their 5060 price to match the new Panasonic 600 series?
TommmyJ 04-01-06, 01:34 PM Try waiting at least 5 seconds or more instead of 3 seconds as stated on Bruzzi's site. Someone had trouble earlier in the thread with not waiting long enough. This was on a 4360 or 5060 though.

You should never connect surge equipment to another piece of surge equipment.

I actually own 3 plasmas, 2 Pioneer and one Panasonic. I'm extremely casual with what I watch on all 3 of them. I don't see any IR on any of the 3. If you want to watch 8 hours straight of 4:3 and then turn on a white screen and look for IR, well, then you get what you deserve.
Who would be stupid enough to watch 7-8 continuous hours of 4:3 material on a display that comes with a burn-in warning? You?

jacksonian 04-01-06, 05:35 PM First of all, the image retention that would result is temporary. Second of all, if you have that much of a problem falling asleep in front of the TV, then you might need to check yourself.

It is actually pretty tough to find a UPS unit designed for home theatre. They are mostly for computer systems and have software associated with them. If you want more protection than a good surge suppressor can offer, try something like the Belkin unit in the link.

I was just pointing out that ESPN HD can be hard on your plasma with those custom side bars and the bright white logo that never shifts. No need for insults.
I experienced some odd behavior with my MR today and was curious if anyone else has experienced this or knows what happened.
I turned on the set and was tuned into an OTA analog broadcast for roughly 5 minutes when the display suddenly shut off (LED on bottom left turned red). The LED on the media receiver, however, remained blue but started blinking roughly once per second. When I turned the MR back on, the display came up after a ~15 second delay but did not appear to be responding to remote commands.
I unplugged the power from the unit, waited a few seconds and plugged it back in. After re-scanning for channels (which probably wasn't necessary), everything seems back to normal and has been running for >1.5hrs w/o any problems.
So, any idea what happened? MR somehow overheat? software glitch? TIA,
Mike
allaboutmojo 04-02-06, 10:18 AM Thanks Viventis,
But I already have a Monster Ref Power Center HTS 3500 that should be good enough for surge protection, power filtering, etc.
I am trying to find out if I need to continue to use my UPS for the Plasma (as i did with RPTV)?
ANYONE ELSE? Using UPS or just Power Conditioner or neither?
Thanks

I tried it again...counting very slowly...still no SM.
Pluturi.... You've got mail.
how have people fared on here using motorola cable cards with 5060's? my mom is in arizona and the cable guy came out and put a motorla cable card in and the thing would not work. you could look at the diagnostics on screen and it recognized the card, yet none of the digital channels would come in and the tv would not rescan channels. anyone else had problems with cable cards and the 4060/5060??? thanks in advance.
BUMP!!
so nobody on here is either using a cable card with the 5060 or 4060, or having problems using a cable card???? or this has just become a burn-in, power conditioner thread?? Please, any info on this would be appreciated. It just doesnt seem right to me, as I had not heard of anyone complaining of using cable cards with 4060/5060's.

The cable card installed in my 4360 by Comcast New England worked fine from the start. Cant say if its Motorola without taking it out but can see part of a green label on top of the card. Installers had quite a few problems with them in the first year, but most work pretty well now. The installation process is not, however, idiot proof and I would suspect the cable company as being the problem.

The issue for UPS is "what are you afraid of losing?" I have UPS on my computers because I'm afraid of losing valuable data, but what do you lose if your TV loses power? Surge protection is all I've ever found a need for on my two Plasmas.
jacksonian 04-02-06, 04:56 PM I was just pointing out that ESPN HD can be hard on your plasma with those custom side bars and the bright white logo that never shifts. No need for insults.
And I was simply pointing out that as long as you don't abuse your plasma, you should be fine. With all the IR worries in this thread, it's easy for people to develop an irrational fear. With normal use and not even being all that careful, IR is not an issue. But any IR you get from 8 continuous hours of 4:3 on a plasma is operator error in my opinion.
I stated my reply sharply because you told me to go do something completely stupid with my plasma and "get back to you". No thanks.

TV Guide issue. The only way to stop it is to completely disable it (when it ask you for your zip code, enter all zeros).

i agree it probably is, but what are you going to do, argue with the installer? if it was my tv, i would insist that they try other cards. but its my moms and shes 2000 miles away and im heading home today. i guess she is stuck with the box for now since she doesnt know what and how to bitch about.

When my mom (who also lives more than a thousand miles away) has such a problem I tell her to call and ask to speak to a supervisor. They general respond a lot better to little old ladys who are upset than they do to me. The explanation would be: Your company is supposed to support cable card and my model Pioneer TV works with cable card for other people. I'm really upset at not being able to see the shows I'm paying for and want you to send a techitian that knows how to make this thing work.
As an aside, I believe that cable companies are required by law to support cable card. Good luck.
unfortunately its cable america which is a very small company, and they only have two installers that do cards. shell just have to wait til cox cable makes it out her way.

Thanks D-Nice. I just learned that the OTA channel I was watching had a catastrophic failure of their MPEG decoder around the time I was tuned in. Their standby encoder still has a couple configurations issues (most PSIP it seems) that could upset some tuners. I think this problem may have caused the MR to reset or lockup. If the problem crops up again, I'll definitely disable the TV Guide.

The only reason the RPTV people use the ups's is because of the heat generated by bulbs. If power dies, the fans inside the set lose power and the bulb cooks itself before it can cool off and shortens the life.
Plasmas do not suffer from such heat issues, therefore no need for UPS. Just get a surge protector.
MaliciousBraham 04-03-06, 02:19 AM I have a question, i own the Pioneer Elite 930 and wanted to know if the built-in tuner is in the actual plasma display or if its in the media receiver because i read the following on plasmabuyingguide.com and it got me a little worried:
Please help..thanks a lot.
well, i haveta say that buyingguide is stretching a bit. Tuner standards dont change that often. Your tuners are in the media receiver, but I wouldnt worry about tuner standards ever changing during the lifetime of your plasma.
If your gf does not mind having an external cable box forever and ever, there is no need for an internal tuner. The only thing having an internal tuner buys you is (depending on the features of the tuner) being able to drop the external cable box. If she's planning on sat service, you will be using a sat box anyway, so it doesnt matter either way.
MaliciousBraham 04-03-06, 02:26 AM I have a H20 direct tv reciver connected to my pioneer 4360 via hdmi, can i get optical output from the pioneer MC? i have enabled digital out for the h20 and have enable for the hdmi on the MC. The optical is hooked to my logitech and the MC. But no soud will come out in optical settings. Please help
Run the optical direct from your H20 to the receiver. Do not pass it through the pioneer MR, or expect to pass full 5.1 through the MR from the HDMI. It does not work that way. (HDMI and copy protection rules prohibit it)
If you are using the plasma's internal tuners, then you can get full 5.1 from the MR's optical out. But the display will not take a 5.1 signal from the hdmi port and convert it for output on the optical port.
so after break in... what sort of contrat settings do any other 5060 owners out there use? I always thought going too high on contrast setting was not too good.
dchristie 04-03-06, 11:47 AM While in my local BB this weekend I was told the Elites were on sale because they will be replaced with newer models soon. Has anyone heard of this? I'm still in my shop/debate mode between the 5060 and the Elite, but if this is true it may complicate my decision even more.

I believe I've got my contrast set to 34 and brightness set to +1. I'll have to check when I get home.
Many people use 25 for contrast but I think it's a bit low, personally.
So I did it. This forum is simply great. After about 5 months of reading through post after post about the Pioneer and Panasonic plasmas and going from wanting a 37 inch panny to placing an order for the Pioneer 5060HD from Satellite and Sound today!
While I was very hesitant on ordering from the internet there were no local dealers who were willing to come down in price, even recommended ones from this board. I am working with Ryan from S&S and have read many good reviews about them on this forum, I sure hope everything goes smoothly. Thanks again for all of the great reading the past few months, I can't wait to get the set in hand and start the break in process. I have a feeling I will become a couch potato for a few weeks after delivery. Now I just hope my 4 year old Marantz DVD player is up to the task of picture quality on the new set.
MaliciousBraham 04-03-06, 02:06 PM i think they call it the "TV 10" ... those 10 extra pounds you gain by being a couch potato when you get a new tv :)
Congrats! You will enjoy your new tool.
my girlfriend and i took the plunge and bought an 1130 this weekend, which will be arriving later this week. i can hardly wait!
i plan to use a cable card with the 1130, but i like the channel guide i get from the HD set top box. is the TVG online service really that bad?

Its really area dependent. Some areas are always up to date with the full channel listings. Some areas have poor transmission through the cable systems (what causes most errors). The TVGuide service built into the Pioneers is done by Gemstar. The channel data is not the same data that also populates the cable box guide.
In general, in my area, I have found the OTA gemstar data to be very accurate and reliable. The cable gemstar data is very reliable in operation, but is not very accurate in channel listings (channels missing in the gemstar guide that exist in the cable system). It takes very good communication between the companies to make sure everything is bang up to date, and if there is one thing we all know, cable companies arent all that great at communicating with others :) Other areas do not have any problems at all, and even other areas have way more problems than I do.
These are problems with the Gemstar guide system as a whole, not specific to Pioneer tv's. Any manufacturer's tvs that have the gemstar guide installed can fall prey to the issues you read posted here. There are many many gemstar threads across this forum, from rear projection to crt to plasma.
Its not the best system, but its the best one for the tv manufacturers to implement on a cost vs performance basis.
If you want to go cable card, you wont have to worry about channel scanning, all the channel lineup is stored on the card. You just have to hope that your cable company has updated Gemstar with their full lineup and gemstar is broadcasting all the data, and the cable company is allowing the gemstar signal to pass through fully to your tv. I make it sound like its a shot in the dark that it even works at all, but thats definitely not the truth of it. The truth of it is that the system works more often than it doesnt.
If you know of someone in your area that has a samsung dlp or other display with the tvguide system, and it works for them, then 9.9 times out of 10, it will work for you.
I have a motorola cablecard through comcast cable in jacksonville, FL. Went in quickly and I was surprised how nice the picture quality was.
I also have a Motorola 3412 Dual Tuner All-Digital DVR working great using the HDMI cable to the Media box.

MWMarsha 04-04-06, 05:57 PM Hi Folks:
I just started using my 4360 last week GREAT picture...
One concern... fan noise.
There is a small exhaust fan on the tuner section that emits a 60 cycle hum constantly... Well almost, it does stop for a few seconds when the panel is turned on butt merrily continues once the panel is up and running.
I have a quite HT setup and find the noise disturbing. Putting my denon 3806 manual on top subdues it somewhat but it's still there.
Is this normal?

there has been some posting about this in the thread.
general concensus is that yes, on some MR's the fan can be noisy, but so far either the stores where the tv's were purchased or pioneer themselves (when the stores didnt want to help) have been helpful in either replacing the fan or swapping out the MR.
If it bothers you, call your store and see what they will do. Sometimes they call pioneer right away, sometimes they just swap it out before contacting pioneer. If your store doesnt want to help, call pioneer customer service. From what I have read they are very understanding on this issue. If you bought over the internet the retailer will most likely just contact pioneer directly and have a tech come out to your home.
ivoniko 04-05-06, 12:01 AM I bought my 4360 in December and it's been a great so far. The only problem I cannot resolve is setting up the TV Guide and the remote control. I tried both manually and automatically but nothing happens. So I'm using 4 remote controls instead of being able to set up my Pioneer remote. The TVGuide doesn't receive any listings. Has anyone heard of such issue.
Please HELP
How is everyone cleaning their tv? I've been using the cloth that comes with the tv, but noticed last night that there are little hairline scratches all over the bezel.
TommmyJ 04-05-06, 12:06 PM MWMarsha, I had a noisy fan in my media box also. Tried everything to deaden the sound and nothing worked so I moved it to the next room(utility room). I don't hear the box anymore but this isn't a viable solution for everyone. Pioneer Canada says the fan noise is normal and won't do anything about it. I have spoke to one person who had his fans changed out and there was no improvement to speak of.
rudyr, I have a Pioneer 56TXi receiver as well as the 4360 and I have learned that it doesn't take much to scratch the Urishi finish. Not very resistant to scratching at all. Little dust particles that settle on it scratch the finish when you wipe it with the cloth. Maybe a can of air to blast the dust off rather then wipe with cloth?

You would not belive what you can buy the 1130 for at Magnolia I got mine I don't think I can say what I bought it for, it was a lot less then the 5061 so if you are thinking of buying one shop real hard.
elvisahmed 04-05-06, 05:29 PM Hi there,
Just got my Xbox 360. Have it connected thorugh the HD Component Cable provided by MS with the premium pack. Does anyone have any recommend settings for this setup. The 4360 has been broken in using teh one's provided by D-Nice but the picture doesn't look right if I use it for xbox 360 any suggetions will be appreciated.
FYI...I changed from component to HDMI on my DVR. Well I'll be damed. At first, I wasn't all that sure it was better. After calibrating again and giving it a day or so, I can say 100% that HDMI is better. So much more detail and richness. I'm amazed at the picture and just a grin on my face when watching. So if you have the chance, go HDMI. Now I just need a good HDMI DVD player.
nick mpt 04-05-06, 06:18 PM I had no idea that this much talk goes on about our silly "toys"!
I recently purchased the 5060 and it looks great on the wall with the cables concealed, but I need a cabinet for below. I'm in the Toronto area (specifically Mississauga)....does anyone know a good place to find nice, affordable units?....some I've seen on the net are quite expensive.

You need to find a calibration disc (Avia or DVE) and calibrate as if it was a dvd player.
MarkT75 04-05-06, 06:38 PM Hey Guys,
I see a lot of discussion on this model. From some of my research it seems the top players in plasma are Pioneer and Panasonic.
I'm looking at getting the 5060 for a 50/50 mix of TV and Xbox 360 gaming.
[EDIT]
Thanks,
Mark
So with my 5060 in transit I was thinking about bidding on one of the PDK-1013 stands for it. I have not seen the 5060, in person, with the standard stand but don't know if I like having the black bezel offset by the silver. Does the PDK-1013 look at all out of place on the tv since it was not totally designed for it? Also does the PDK-1013 swivel?

yep, same here. i actually noticed a few right after i wall mounted mine. guess having my hands all over the bezel during mounting didn't help. i can't see mine unless i get really close and the liht hits it just right, but i don't have much ambient light in the room. i would think it would be a lot more noticeable if there's a big glare from windows.

I'd be curious what other people think about this... frankly, I've done a few A/B's with the two and I don't find much of a difference at all (this is obviously a frequently debated topic worthy of its own thread)... also.... even if hdmi were a hair better I'd still consider going with component based on the lag in changing input formats (480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i).
For now, I'm sticking with component for my dvr and using hdmi for my dvd player.
Just my 2 cents.

why would there be a lag between switching input formats between hdmi and component. the cable is just the medium in which the signal is passed right? the input itself is what acutally does the switching. i just leave my H20 on 1080i all the time since i hate the lag that the H20 creates when switching.

HDMI is a digital interface with HDCP, so when you change resolutions, there is also an HDCP re-sync and therefore lag. With component, there is usually just a very short delay due to just the resolution change. But with no copy protection data to re-sync, the switch is quicker.
I think it is slow at this moment in technology. In a couple years we will start seeing tuners built more to handle this situation and it will be a non issue.

i see. i didn't know the HDCP had to re-sync, but it makes sense now.
andyboy 04-06-06, 10:17 PM Has anyone experience "static" noises when a TV show goes into a commercial and/or comes back from a commercial? I have an HR-20 hooked up to my 5060 with HDMI connection, and also I have a HR10-250 hooked up with HDMI as well. I also hear a sharp static noise when I go into the Tivo menu and when I fastforward or rewind during viewing.
It's only a split second when the noise happens.
Anyone have an issue with this?
WalterPreston 04-06-06, 10:58 PM i saw a pioneer 1130 in at a local BB a few weeks ago and fell in love with the picture. i have been struggling with the list price, but did not want to take a chance on a non-authorized dealer.
last saturday, my step-son (who pays no rent by-the by and i love now more than ever) won a basic RCA 52" HD projection unit at a company party and offered it to me (probably as guilty compensation for the $2000 car loan that he never repaid for that pos jeep cherokee that lasted about 4 months, but maybe because of that time i drove 3 hours to traffic court with him and got him off for that speeding ticket). it wasn't really what i wanted, so tonight i went to bb without a receipt, with packing list in hand, and a story at the ready.
lo and behold, they had an elite 1130 open box at 15% off. it took an hour, but the manager (who must be a direct descendant of st thomas aquinas or other saintly figure who deserves a place in heaven - in due time - at least after noon tomorrow) finally agreed to take the rca back (box unopened) and apply the purchase price to the pioneer. cool deal? i was weak in the knees, light in the heart and spinning in the brain.
then i came home to check the no interest credit deal on-line and found the coupon for an additional 20% off the best price on any open box items. (suddenly this is a better day then any of the three times that i got married - or divorced - or when i sold the boat!)
pick it up tomorrow. is this a great country or what!
p.s. i hope the disclosure of discounts does not violate any forum rules - if so i humbly apologize - i had to tell someone and telling my (new) wife is out of the question
Good for you, Walter. Enjoy your new toy!

The PDK-1013 looks great with the 5060. By the way, the 5060 IS designed for the 1013 stand. The stand that comes with the 5060 has 16 inch rectangular upright tubes. The TV hangs on the tubes with bolts the same way it does with a wall mount. The PDK-1013 has much smaller "pegs" that slide into built-in slots in the 5060 body. The slots serve no other purpose and are unused when you install the 5060 on the enclosed stand. I suppose the housing of the 5060 copied that of the Elite in this regard.
The PDK-1013 does easily swivel left and right (nothing has to be unloosened). This is great to angle the TV away from a source of glare.
Hello all,
When I first started researching the purchase of a plasma, I was considering the 42" Panasonic or Hitachi. Then I found this forum and changed my mind to the 50" Elite 1130. I've been lurking on this site for a long time and learned a lot, including the fact that I still have lots and lots more to learn. Before purchasing the 1130, I'm wondering if someone can point me in the direction of where I can learn the basics of both plasma televisions as well as basic AV info. I'm completely in the dark when it comes to understanding HDMI, composite, component, how to connect everything, resolution settings, etc.
For what it's worth, we have the basic digital Scientif Atlanta 4200 cable box with a cable card from Cablevision. I'd like to loose the box altogether, but if that isn't my best option, I'll get the SA 4200HD box with cable card. We also have an older inexpensive Pio home theater in-a-box (I think it is the HTD-520). I'm not planning on upgrading that right now as my 5 year old twins are the only ones watching dvds. We also have an old vcr that the kids use now and then.
I'm really enjoing this forum. I've learned so much already from some very, very knowledgeable people on the forum. You've got me so excited about purchasing the 1130.
Thanks again for all your help and I look forward to learning more,
Trisha

Thanks again for all your help and I look forward to learning more,
Trisha

One thing I learned about plasmas is that there is no "perfect" plasma yet and brands such as Pioneer, Panasonic, NEC and Fujitsu are the best available. Each has there strengths but PQ is my top priority and the 1130 in terms of overall PQ is the best I have seen. It has a few quirts but the picture is breathtaking.
Has anyone experience "static" noises when a TV show goes into a commercial and/or comes back from a commercial? I have an HR-20 hooked up to my 5060 with HDMI connection, and also I have a HR10-250 hooked up with HDMI as well. I also hear a sharp static noise when I go into the Tivo menu and when I fastforward or rewind during viewing.
It's only a split second when the noise happens.
Anyone have an issue with this?
I have a HR10-250 connected via HDMI to my 1130 and have not seen this issue. I need more detail to help you. For example does it happen with both the HR20 and HR10? Does it only happen on particular channels or just on HD channels when they go to commercial?
kidziti 04-07-06, 05:01 PM We recently received our 1130 - everything is PERFECT except what first appeared as light dust on one side of the beautiful piano-black cabinet. Turns out to be a small series of micro-scratches. What's more, it's only visible at certain times of the day when the light hits it just right. It seems almost ridiculous to repack and replace everything for a seemingly little defect, but was wondering if anyone knows of a remedy. I'm not convinced it's worth the trouble of going through a replacement, but maybe I can convince Pioneer to send another cabinet moulding?
Hello all. I've kind of lost track of the thread as I've been enjoying the panel (5060) for the last two months. Like many, I've been using a modified D-Nice setting. I just purchased a Denon DVD-2910, and I was wondering if any you had some insight on suggested settings, do, don'ts, etc. I did a search of the thread, but didn't turn up anything directly on point. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it does happen with both receivers and happens with both HD and Non HD channels. And as I stated, happens sometimes when I go into the Tivo Menu.
FHinojos 04-08-06, 03:59 AM Got my 1130HD today!!! Totally excited but totally bummed. I had set up a media closet but realized Pioneer uses a special media cable that costs 600 bucks. I bought a 30' HDMI cable for 87 bucks that appears to be useless now. Are there any work arounds for this situation. I'm surprised I didn't read more about this in these forums. Hope someone can help out. I am now rethinking about going back to putting everything in a credenza below the TV since I can't bear to think about paying so much for a bloody cable.

Frank,
Go back earlier in the thread and you'll see a couple people found a company (chicago rings a bell) that provides the media center cable at substantially less. I think, at the time, that they had reported being happy with the quality. Good luck...

Your 30' HDMI cable is worthless. You will need to take/send it back.
Key Digital and Cable-Comm makes cables for the Pioneer. TVA is currently selling the Key Digital cables FAR cheaper than the OEM Pioneer one and it has a better build quality.

Since it happens with both STBs it must be the Pioneer media box. Make sure all connections are secure then try unplugging and plugging back in the media box (wait at least a minute or two before plugging it back in) to hard reboot it. Good luck.
WilliWu 04-08-06, 10:24 AM How do you run the media cable through a tight opening with those big connectors? They are a lot bigger than the HDMI connectors which will barely fit my layout without major excavation. Does anyone make a Pio media cable with removable connectors?

No one makes unterminated cables for the Pioneer. I highly recommend you put in a 2" or 2.5" conduit for your cable run.

Thanks for the reply -- Even though it's bad news. I checked out the TVA site and did not find the Key Digital cable, but they do sell the Pio OEM cable for much less than list and even less than others are charging for Key Digital. Is Key digital worth the extra cost over the Pio OEM cable?
tyoe key digital in their search window and it will show up ;)
TommmyJ 04-08-06, 11:11 AM Caution for any Bell Expressvu/ Pioneer plasma owners out there. I have been using the Expressvu guide on the satellite at a normal rate(several times a night or so), and have noticed a lighter vertical line on my screen that corresponds with a dark line on the guide. It is a dark line that divides the channel numbers and the section that shows what is coming on. I noticed it watching hockey on the ice surface. I have never left the guide on for extended amounts of time or anything but I am having a hard time getting this line to go away. I have not used the guide since and have been running the burn in loop and Monsters Inc almost all week(when not watching it normally). It seems to be getting less noticeable but it is very slow going. I never even thought of the menu causing damage because it is only up for 10-20 seconds at a time. I am on Power save2 with my contrast around 26 and brightness around 0. It seems sad that I can add not using the Sat guide to the no-no's for Plasma use.

just out of curiousity... is the line on the left side, approximatley where a 4:3 line would be?
I had a similar experience with the guide on my SA 8300 (it's one fo the few boxes that doesn't allow you to stretch the guide). I've also done many hours of of white screens, breakin dvd's, etc.
I think I've been as successful as I'm going to be in getting rid of it. Now I can just barely... I mean, really barely see it... only occasionally on a totally white screen. You have to really be looking for it... but, if you're anything like me, you look for it every time there's a white/light screen on.
How many hours are on your panel?
TommmyJ 04-08-06, 11:52 AM On the Bell Expressvu it is a little to the right of where the 4:3 bars would be. I can't stretch the guide on my Sat box either. It would be nice if it could be set to kind of transparent or something. I will have to start using the different Pioneer stretch modes whenever I bring up the guide to keep it off that certain spot. I likely have around 400 or so hours on my TV, to bad I have been using the guide from the start. I thought I was following all the break in rules but I guess not. The wife is even starting to ask questions as to why we even bought this TV if you have to watch out for all of these issues. Don't use the guide now, don't watch 4:3 to much, don't watch too much widescreen with bars, watch out for TV station symbols, etc, etc.
PAnoah6791 04-08-06, 03:47 PM Can someone please PM the instructions on how to check the hours on my TV?
Just have to say after a month my 1130 still looks awesome.. Everyone who see's the pq is wowed by it.. No problems with dead pixels, fan noise or anything. This display rocks!!
Question for 1130 owners, I use the Pio speakers for causal t.v. watching. They're actually pretty good although they do not seem to adjust for the increased volume of commercials. Is there a good setting for this?
elvisahmed 04-08-06, 04:53 PM You need to find a calibration disc (Avia or DVE) and calibrate as if it was a dvd player.
Used the DVE for xbox 360 settings doesn't look good as the DVD player in xbox 360 is just plain awful with just poor poor black levels and a constant wave when u play DVD in it. Is there any other way. Its not the cables I guess as the 720P trailers of Aeon Flux,X3 and Cars look better than any HD signal I have seen. Any other suggetions on how to solve this dilema. As the dvd player solution is not working.
Question for those who purchased the 4360 model.
The box has a big PDP-436PU on the screen box, and PDP-R06U on the MR box...I do see a smaller font PDP-4360HD on the box as well..so I thought wierd...but no biggy.
When I opened the screen the ONLY model number on the screen is:
PDP-436PU.
Is this normal???

Do all the 6th gen Pioneer's have the silver side/top/bottom trim? The piano black finish on the front, but that silver side piece around the edges...I swear some in the store have been solid piano black on the sides as well as the front...but maybe I just wasn't paying that close attention...because the one in my living room has silver trim on the sides.

My 1130 has solid piano black on the front and sides of the display bezel (front most ~1/2"). The rest of the casing is a dark gunmetal gray.
Mike8023 04-09-06, 01:58 AM Hi Everyone,
I've had my 930 for about 4 months now, and I am extremely worried that I may have an image retention/burn in issue from playing Need for Speed on my Xbox 360. On the bottom right corner, I can still see the outline of the speedometer on the screen when I view other programming on the PDP.
I was using the default Game AV setting, and I haven't played this game for more than 2 hours at a time, so I was extremely surprised then I saw this image appear.
I have let the Discovery HD channel play on my 930 for 8 hours each of the last 4 days, and while the image seems to have faded, It can still be seen when all of the surrounding pixels are shades of the same color.
Is there anything else I can do to try to remedy this? I would hate to have to live with the knowledge that I may have just ruined my set.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
Bubbalotski 04-09-06, 06:17 AM I was in the Army PX here in Seoul and saw they had a Pioneer PDP-436HDG and was wondering if that was the same as the 4360. It was clearly the best picture there, with a Panny coming in a close second.
The Hitachi rep tried to steer me towards teh new generation Hitachi and touted it having two tuners. Don't really see the need for that with the PIP that the pio has with the split acreen from different inputs.
The price was close to what the unauthorized internet dealers sell the 4360 for.

billybob_jcv 04-09-06, 10:36 AM I *think* it is the version of the 4360 distributed in the Asia markets - it sure looks like it. I don't know what (if any) differences there are. Are you intending to bring it back to the States? If so, I would verify things like the power supply, and whether there are any issues with PAL vs NTSC.

If it's going away, it may just take more time. You said you don't play more than 2hrs at a time, but do you watch other programming in between. You need to alternate between normal t.v. viewing. I have been playing 360 on my 1130 on the game setting. I have never noticed any IR. I always try and watch some t.v. after, if I have to walk away I switch the input to t.v. or turn off the display. I also did not play for the first month I had the display.
I can see you having an issue with IR if you play a ton of 360 even if it's only 2hrs at a time w/o watching t.v., especially if it's the same game.

Use the break in disk available from the link in first post of the master break in - burn in thread. It alternates different shades of color indefinitely. I have found this useful on the occasion of getting the ESPN logo stubbornly hanging around after late night sports on ESPN HD. The light grey screens show about anything that is retained on the plasma screen. The disk (which is an SVCD) does a pretty good job of cleaning any IR if you run it overnight.
gordonhong 04-09-06, 07:49 PM I received my 1130HD five days ago. I have found some of the information in this forum on accessing the service menu, but I have not found anything on how to find the number of hours on the panel. In the INFORMATION MENU, level 6, I see something called MAIN HOUR METER (it also appears in the level 4 menu). This meter appears to measure the number of hours regardless if it's in standby mode or fully ON. Can someone confirm if this is the only meter available to measure usage?? Thanks!

Thanks D-Nice and Dnys (interesting coicidence on the names) for the information on the cables. I decided to pocket the $$$ on the cable and put everything in to a Salamander credenza under the tv. Saved some $$$ on the easier install too. I read through those threads a long time ago and it didn't register with me when it came time to buy and install the tv.
BTW, the PQ is outstanding. I am using D-Nice's settings for break-in and I have the new 3412 (#DCT3412/2305) all digital Comcast DVR. I also have the 6412 DVR with HDMI (Series 3 I think it is referred to as). I was able to compare SD and HD channel PQ and there is a very noticeable improvement in both modes with the 3412.
Thanks again for help.

Also consider putting the media receiver under the floor - ours sits on a suspended shelf near the basement ceiling - just under the floor where the TV is mounted. The MR doesn't need to be exposed to the remote IR signals for normal TV operation. The rest of the equipment stack is still 30' away, but I didn't have to spend hundreds on a cable to put the MR in the stack.

An Interesting feeling.
So a little background first...I purchased the HP PL4200N about a week and a half ago...long story short...the retailer screwed up, sent me the PE4200N, which is the EDTV version, and then between them shipping and me realizing the error, all the HD versions sold out...so to make up for it, they gave me the 4360 at near cost. So for a little over a week I had the HP EDTV 42", and now since Saturday, I've had the Pio 4360.
To be completely honest...I didn't realise the first set was EDTV until I tried to find the VGA connection to hook up my PC...the HD PQ was outstanding...thought it was real HD...apparently not...wow...it certainly did fool me.
So I was anxious to compare the quality of the HD on an EDTV and the Pio coming in HDTV. I was expecting the SD to actually be a little worse on the Pio given the higher native resolution and more artifacts introduced in the picture...but from the moment I turned on the Pio I haven't quite felt that "now we're talking" feeling.
I actually found the picture on the Pio kind of dark out of the box. The contrast already at 40. I turned it down to 25 for a break-in setting...and surprisingly it didn't even seem to adjust much...from 20-50 contrast I find the effect minimal compared to the HP control's of contrast.
I am also finding I am picking up a lot more noise on the HD channels I couldn't see on the EDTV set. Does this make sense? I though the ED picture looked very sharp and smooth...after finding out it wasn't 720p or 1080i being displayed, I was very anxious to get the HD set...but to be honest I'm a little concerned.
I know sometimes there is source related noise from my satelite box...but I can see in general sometimes a very fine fine noise I really just didn't notice with the HP.
I've always picked out the Pioneer to be the sharpest, brightest and most attractive set in any tv shop I've gone into...so I'm a little concerned over why I'm not gleaming with joy now that it's in my living room --> never thought I'd be able to afford it.
Another point is the judder effect....don't recall this on the HP either...but in some slow pans and credits I can see a slight judder or shimmy in the picture...sometimes it's hard to tell if I'm being ultra anal and sensitive now...it's hard to just stand back and appreciate when I have 30 days to decide on returning or keeping an expensive piece of equipment!
Are their some tweaked settings to help with break-in of a 4360 being sensitive to noise and judder?

Does the noise/misquito effect make sense going from EDTV to HDTV?
nick mpt 04-10-06, 03:00 PM I am also getting picture noise on my 5060 in the form of very noticable, flickering, horizontal lines across the bottom half of the screen. They last antwhere from 2-5 secs at a time, and occur maybe 2-3 times every 15 mins or so. I only noticed it on HD channels at first, but saw it with SD programming last night. I've only had the unit for a couple of weeks now and I'm not particularily tech inclined....does anyone know if this could be a problem with the pannel, or is this noise coming from the cable signal, or other connection problems?
Any insight is much appreciated.

No it doesn't make sense. How are you connecting your STB to the panel?
STB only has DVI...so DVI connector to HDMI input 1.
Same setup as with the EDTV set just a week ago. Even the wife mentioned right away she thought the EDTV had a "smoother" picture on the HD channels.
Viewing distance is about 7-8 feet.

Your picture noise is sounds like interference in your cable or power line. Check all cable connections to make sure they are secure and make sure the wiring in your house doesn't have any grounding problems. If it is a power issue, a power conditioner might help.
STB only has DVI...so DVI connector to HDMI input 1.
Same setup as with the EDTV set just a week ago. Even the wife mentioned right away she thought the EDTV had a "smoother" picture on the HD channels.
Viewing distance is about 7-8 feet.
Do you know off hand what your current settings are?
Do you know off hand what your current settings are?
The one thing that changed from the ED to the HD as far as physical location was the new set being wall mounted.
I have the power chord for this set running down the wall (outside the wall, and the HDMI is running inside the wall) ...the HP was just on a table stand...not sure if that could cause any issues compared to a cable simply lying on the ground.
I've played with the settings quite a bit...recently I think I had something like:
AV: Standard
Contrast: 25
Brightness: 0
Color: -2
Sharpness : 3
PureCinema: Off
Color Temp: Low
CTI: OFF
DNR: Low
MPEG NR: Low
Keeping in mind I've had the CTI on, DNR at mid and high with MPEG NR up a notch as well...different combinations etc.
Just trying to compare different scenarios to see if I could clean it up a bit. It's not a huge obvious "oh my, what's wrong with the pictrure" type of distortion...it's still a solid picture, just seems like I can see way more of a screen door/misquito/dithery pixelation. For example watching the masters yesterday and you just get a slight pixel effect which sticks out on different shots from time to time...kinda always in the background but close up face shots you might not be as aware of it.
Or some shimmering on the edge of a pant leg against the green while a golfer would just be preparing for their shot.

Ok. Well first thing, your sharpness is way too high. Make sure you set it to -3. Second, I really think it's your Sat provider. The ED set will mask alot of the artifacts that the HD set shows as it has far less resolution. An ED picture may be the sweet spot with your current Sat provider.

Ya that's pretty much what I was thinking too. And I'm fine with that...I mean it's still a great picture...I was just a little concerned because I had the ED in the house last week and didn't notice the noise...but I figured it was probably due to the higher resolution.
And I can live with that as I'm definately not going to be satisfied with EDTV PC resolution :).
I will definately go with your suggested settings for the rest of my break-in...see how things go from there.
I also had a little bit of audio-sync issues I didn't have with the ED...had to adjust the delay a bit on my receiver and it seems pretty good now...receiver only has 25ms delay though...so it's ALMOST perfect but probably another 5-10ms would put it right on...not worth the price for a whole new receiver just to get a longer delay time!!
Thanks D-NICE.
nick mpt 04-10-06, 05:30 PM ...had to adjust the delay a bit on my receiver and it seems pretty good now...
When you say your receiver, do you mean the media box that came with the T.V., or do you have a separate receiver with a home theatre system?...I also have a slight sync delay. I'm willing to live with it for now if it means buying a separate receiver, but if there is a way to adjust it with the media box, I'd love to know how.
GO LEAFS GO!!
GO LEAFS GO!!
Haha...oh boy! ALWAY NEXT YEAR!!!!
With the sync delay I'm refering to my home theatre receiver. I have the audio running digital coax straight from my Sat receiver to my Yamaha home theatre receiver.
As far as I know, the MR has no delay features.
Do you have your video and audio running seperate cables, or all in the HDMI? I'm using star choice Sat provider.

D-Nice,
I also have similar problem as nick mpt mentioned above.
On occasion, I see the the lower part (it is always the bottom part) as flickering lines and if it happens long enough I could see that it's actually the same image from the top repeated (not clear because this image is made of flickering lines).
I thought it was jitter, someone said Pioneer has to replace a panel inside the TV. I still have the 30 days return if I need to exchange it. But I need to be sure what causes this first. As I'm out of town right now, I can only try your suggestion once I got home. Could there be another explanation? Is something broken? Could harsh treatment during shipment process damage something? Is it manufacturing issue? Anyone?
Thanks.

If you are seeing the top part of the screen at the bottom, you have a panel problem and it does need to be replaced by Pioneer.
ianrmack 04-10-06, 07:26 PM I have an 1130 and Comcast cable.
I have been using D-Nice and MaliciousBraham's settings. (I amd very colorblind.)
I have noticed a pattern on HD channels that sits in what I would call the quarter tones. it's like a dithered bit of noise or faint screening when there is a lot of white or light images.
does not seem to be as noticable with my 59avi dvdp.
are there certain "buttons" that impact this in the settings menus?
thanks,

I bought a HDMI cable, but when the HD box came from Rogers it didn't have a HDMI input (only DVI and component)....I'll return it and save a 100 bucks!

now that MARJDI mentioned it, I have also seen that these flickering lines sometimes form very vague outlines of unrecognizable images, but it never lasts long enough for me to make out what the images are...I will pay attention to see if it is in fact images from the upper half of the screen. And like he said it is ONLY on the lower half of the screen.
I've had my 5060 since Christmas. Overall, I'm very, very pleased. While shopping and comparing displays, I commented in several posts about the fact that it seemed the 5060 "pixelated" graphic elements...things like network logo overlays, text elements, etc. I could see it in side by side comparisons where models sitting right next to it displayed those elements more smoothly. However, I believe those models also sacrificed some overall PQ...everything seemed a bit softer on them.
Yet, now that I've had time to a wide range of programming and source material, the pixelization still kinda bothers me. And it is very apparent on some HD source. The NCAA basketball tournament HD games about drove me crazy. The wide shots looked fine. When they showed anything that was a close-up or medium shot of a player or other people, and the camera had movement to it, there was obvious pixelization. Ugly, annoying, unbearable pixelization. Discernable blocks. Embarrassing to my guests who had come over to see an HD basketball game. Is it the particular local HD CBS affiliate using a poor data rate? How do I know what the data rate is? Because I've seen this phenomenon on other channels and source material (although not nearly as obvious as sporting events), I'm wondering if it's not the 5060 itself...unable to keep up with the video data...kinda like a poor refresh rate or something.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Rod

The actual panel hours is located in the panel fac menu.
Found it. I had forgotten to program the "Mute" button on my learning remote so I couldn't page into that menu. Thanks again D-Nice.
Mike8023 04-11-06, 01:13 AM If it's going away, it may just take more time.
I thought I had been watching quite a bit of television on the display, but the ratio may not have been as high as I thought. I also did not play games on the set for the first month I had the set, but I guess Need For Speed changed that. Live and learn I guess.
Mike8023 04-11-06, 01:15 AM Use the break in disk available from the link in first post of the master break in - burn in thread.
Thanks for the suggestion Viventis. I will try this and let you know how it goes.
gordonhong 04-11-06, 01:39 AM The actual panel hours is located in the panel fac menu.
Thanks D-Nice! I tried it earlier this evening and found it after scrolling through the PANEL menu. You can also get the serial number from this menu which is helpful, since I forgot to write it down before I mounted the panel!

Like one ISF technician told me, welcome to the wonderful world of digital TV. Sounds like MPEG compression artifacts at the source. A high quality plasma like the 5060 will faithfully reproduce anything you put into it. Also the closer you sit the more noticeable it will be. Luckily the Pioneers come with excellent capabilities to reduce artifacts and noise however they can produce some small side effects. For MPEG compression pixelization all you can do is increase the MPEG noise reduction setting. However the higher you go, the more it will soften the picture. DNR works great on reducing noise problems i.e. dither noise inherent to the Pioneers, with very little side effects. For my sources I feel the best setting it to have MPEG NR on low and DNR on high. If you really want the best performance you would need to set these on a program to program basis. I guess you need to decide the trade-offs of what to do and how much to apply.

Yes, I have also found with MPEG NR on Low, DNR on Mid or High, set the color temp to Warm as well and it can help soften the image a bit and it seemed to take off some edge when I was testing it out last night.

Yes, Star Choice only has DVI as well, so I am using a HDMI to DVI adapter. When you say single RCA cable for audio, do you mean it's only Mono from the left channel?

Wondering if it's a world of difference for these models...or if maybe getting a DVE disk and playing around will improve things noticeably by itself without spending the $$$.

Hmmm...it's interesting you mentioned this...because as I stated above, one of my first reactions when I turned on the Pio for the first time was how dark it looked. Take someone in a black suit for example...I find it hard to pick out the buttons and pocket linings etc...it just looks all black.
This was on the initial 40 contrast out of the box too. I thought the Pio had an exceptional greyscale which should lead to great shadow details and gradual variations in color and detail.

What source are you experiencing this?
Guys, you have to remember that you are NOT suppose to see everything in dark areas.....you are only suppose to see what the director of the picture intended you to see.

I would have to then ask if you actually calibrated your Xbox and DVD player with Avia or DVE? If not, thats your problem. Unless stated otherwise, my settings are only to be used for cable boxes. I can almost guarantee you that they will not work properly with dvd players....including the xbox.
mixtapem 04-11-06, 03:56 PM the main thing where it really sticks out is concerts on the hd channels when its black u cant make out any of the crowd or instruments really and fight night round 3 for 360 when i played with my hitachi everything was normal u could see the crowd and the rest of the arema now u can see some of it but the blacks blend in i hate to have to return another tv which this would be my 3th bcuz other hitachis had a flickering problem with all hd content
also other people have come over and noticed this right away without me sayin anything surely something in the service menu can fix this i would hope like i mentioned before my lcd have the EXACT same problem and was fixed by lowering the gamma
edit: it doesnt matter the source.. i know for a facti ts the tv SM settings i cant imagine that a low end hitachi would have better detailing than a pioneer i want to get it calibrated properly by an ISF tech thankfully this wont be my primary home theatre veiwing this will be in my bedroom i plan to get a 50" or bigger

I am trying to figure out what you are describing... I gather from your description that you mean darker "ghosting" for example thick black scrolling text on a white background?
If that is what you are seeing, you can reduce it by either lowering contrast, brightness, or some combination thereof. You might also play with the power save modes, and also experiment with the ACL setting.
I noticed something like that as well when the panel was breaking in, but now after 5 months or so, I barely see it if ever, and its only in extreme cases. Doing the above minimized it during the breakin, and now after increasing back to even more than my previous values, I dont see any. This was common in older technology plasmas and is markedly better in newer models from all manufacturers.
There is a term for it, but it escapes me at the moment... (long work day)

I was considering getting my 1130 ISF calibrated however it has the ability to set most of the controls an ISF tech uses right from the user menu and I was able to get the settings from another person that had there unit ISF calibrated and it worked perfect for my sources (HD-TIVO and HTPC). See this post for more information,
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7178871#post7178871
However these settings will not work for a 5060 and I think it would be well worth getting it ISF calibrated as the only way to make grey scale tracking adjustments in the service menu. I highly recommend the guys at lionav.com and one of the techs may offer tour in your area.

I did not notice any pixelation during the NCAA Tournament via Antenna or TWC cable in Houston. Every once in a while, I experience bouts of pixelation on certain channels, but I chalk that up to temporary HD signal problems.
The one thing that bothered me during the NCAA tournament was the dithering noise that was prevalent on the parquet floors. As the camera followed the action up and down the full court, you could easily see the dithering noise in the parquet floors from my viewing distance of 10+ feet. Once the action stopped in the half-court, there was no longer a noise problem. I saw no noticeable improvement from setting the DNR to "high".
From a picture quality standpoint, this is really the only thing that even remotely bothers me about my 5060.

wow...it was that bad eh? Hmm...I think I'm just being sensitive and picky. I wouldn't think judging on my PQ that I have a bad panel...just being anal as usual when dumping 3 grand on a television.
You'll have to update on thursday and let us know if it is completely different with the new panel. Was the picture watchable?
how heavy/unweildy is the boxed 1130hd unit? my tv came in today (oh the excitement!!!) and i originally planned to just do a pick up, but paranoia kicked in and i'm a little concerned about driving the set home myself. at least if the delivery folks mess it up, its not on me!
i have approx. 30 miles to drive home with the tv. i have a pickup truck (and all sorts of assorted straps and ties), and a friend that can help out.
what do you think?
Do you typically wait until after a 100-200 hour break-in before calibration?
It's probably a good idea although I didn't see to much change in my settings from when I first got my 1130 (I now have about 300 hours on it). I forgot to mention it costs about $250 to $400 on average to have a plasma ISF calibrated. The more inputs and resolutions you have calibrated the more it will cost. When you pay $4000 for a new plasma I think it is worth $250 to have it setup for the best possible picture. I read posts from a few owners of the latest generation Pioneers that have had there's ISF calbrated and have yet to hear one say it wasn't worth it.

I paid $45 for 25-mile delivering & set-up and it was well spent. Took the 'pro' less than 15 minutes to unpack that gigantic ~150lb-box, which very well packed inside by the way, installed the speakers and cleaned out. As long you have a dolly/hand truck, you two can do it yourselves. Some boxes do come w/ 2 card-adapter so look for them before throwing the boxes.
Cheers,

Sam1000 04-11-06, 09:06 PM After seeing some disappointing motion judder issues with 60u at BB, I'm thinking of buying either 5060 or xr5a. Are there any internet dealers/forum sponsors that provide pixel perfect guarantee. I know of only TVA, but I don't want to pay sales tax, so they are out. Although I like 5060, there are too many dead/stuck pixel issues reported for it, so I at least want to make sure that I don't get dead/stuck pixel right of the bat.

i have approx. 30 miles to drive home with the tv. i have a pickup truck (and all sorts of assorted straps and ties), and a friend that can help out.
what do you think?
With 2 people and a pickup truck, it should be a piece of cake. Also, the 1130HD is double boxed, so you can open up the outside box and easily fit the various components in a smaller vehicle (i.e. minivan).
FHinojos 04-12-06, 01:33 AM Also consider putting the media receiver under the floor - ours sits on a suspended shelf near the basement ceiling - just under the floor where the TV is mounted. The MR doesn't need to be exposed to the remote IR signals for normal TV operation. The rest of the equipment stack is still 30' away, but I didn't have to spend hundreds on a cable to put the MR in the stack.
Cool idea. Tempting but not in my California-built home.

blueskies758 04-12-06, 08:04 AM D-Nice, thanks for all your research and help on this forum, you are a gentleman and a scholar.
I noticed you half-jokingly said you'd trade your Denon 3910 for an Elite 79 DVD player.
Just wondering if your Denon 3910 macroblocks on your Elite 930 display at all, and if that was the reason you were wanting the Elite 79?
Thing is, I am torn about which to get and heard the Pioneer 79 will have the chroma bug on Monsters Inc and other Disney 3:2 chroma flagged titles, which is many of them. Any comments?
Viventis 04-12-06, 09:47 AM I've had my 5060 since Christmas.
Thanks,
Rod
I saw exactly the same thing from my CBS affiliate (Charlotte, NC). Sometimes individual players looked like they were covered in a layer of water as they ran up the court. Did you also get the clay face effect on coach's face close-ups?
I believe that it was CBS, the local affiliate, the cable company, or all three rather than a problem with the 5060. The picture was better but not great when I switched from cable to OTA CBS coverage. To compare, an HD basketball game on ESPN-HD looks fantastic. One thing that can't be ruled out, even if the broadcast quality was poor...... would a different plasma do a better job handling the poor source material? I suppose someone who happened to watch one of the NCAA games in a showroom could answer that.

I also want to thank D-Nice. Yesterday, I received my 930 and used D-Nice's set up. Wow! It was amazing. The installers really did not have an idea of the PURE mode and what it does. Last night I watch some basketball on it and the set and D-Nice's settings blew me away. D-Nice you are the man.

1260x780 I'm not sure about....that's a custom resolution.
I have my PC through my 4360 as I browse these forums from the couch with no issue's with reading the text. Including smaller text area's like the address bar in firefox etc. I'm probably 8 feet away.
I use 1280x768 --> that's a 720p resolution (1280x720) that the tv can scale full screen perfectly.
I have an NVidia 6600 OC that allows HDTV connection and it detects the MR right away through the VGA connection and made things simple as pie.
I'm tried some call of duty 2 and Elder Scrolls IV which have specific 1280x768 resolutions and WOW....freakin' amazing!!!
The PC connection was a HUGE deal for me too...and a few months ago I was still planning on holding out for the 1080p sets to get the higher resolution specifically for my PC, but in the end I decided 1280x768 is a pretty decent resolution to run games with full detail on your average to mid video cards...I was right so far.
thanks tpham and mml7 for the replies...i picked it up last night and mounted it on the wall. i only spent a couple hours using it, but it blew me and the girlfriend away...and this was straight out of the box!
so after the initial rush of viewing, i'm using D-Nice's settings for my STB and mhfnet's settings for my dvd player, so thanks to both of you!
right now i'm having a hard time sitting here at work away from the tv! the day can't end soon enough.
I searched and didn't find any information regarding the PS3 connecting with HDMI. Not 100% sure it was confirmed it will support it but seeing as it's release has been delayed and it is going to be "the" gaming system to have I would expect HDMI connectivity.
My point is if I have my HD cable box on INPUT 1(HDMI), only INPUT 3 is left for me to use. Problem is though that I have my DVD player connected through component on INPUT 3. Can you have 2 devices connected to 1 input and if you can how do you toggle between them? Keep in mind INPUT 4 is out of the question as I don't want wires hanging out in front of my cabinet and INPUT 2 does not support HDMI or component.
This is for a 4360. :D

You have to toggle between Disabling your HDMI source (under the option menu).

I've seen it in about 2 movies so far and with those it was very faint. My major problem with the 3910 is the green push that I cannot completely get rid of even with the additional controls of the Elites.

viper7005 04-13-06, 02:02 AM D-Nice,
I also have similar problem as nick mpt mentioned above.
Anyone?
Thanks. I also have a 1130 and a similar problem, mine is flickering at the top. It only happens on HBO-HD channel #70 on D* and it don't happen on any other channels. So then I check my 4360 at the same time and it was fine so it got to be the 1130 ? If you find out any thing on this would you let me know? Thank you
ivoniko 04-13-06, 02:16 AM I bought my 4360 in December and it's been a great so far.
Please HELP
Seems like my post went totally unnoticed. Does anyone know where can find info about this problem.
Thanks

How do you have your cable setup to the panel? You MUST have a direct line from your wall cable to your plasma (no cable box in between) or an OTA antenna. Once you have done that, follow the directions in the manual on how to setup the TV Guide.
As far as programming your remote, that is also in the manua; and is very easy to do. Please make sure you are following the directions.
scottb8888 04-13-06, 12:08 PM Just curious what DNice recommends the setting be (4360) after the break-in Period?
Anyone know roughly how hot does the MR get? I noticed that the MR fan can actually be disabled in the service menu...Perhaps not a good idea to do so, but just a thought for those people with very loud MR fans and who can't get satisfaction from Pioneer...
buzzeroo 04-13-06, 01:39 PM Hi everybody:
I see constant reference to d-nice's recommended break in settings but I can't seem to find them.
Could somebody please provide me a link?
Thanks!
DarthMoprheus 04-13-06, 03:57 PM I would have to then ask if you actually calibrated your Xbox and DVD player with Avia or DVE? If not, thats your problem. Unless stated otherwise, my settings are only to be used for cable boxes. I can almost guarantee you that they will not work properly with dvd players....including the xbox.
Then what settings do you recommend for DVD players?
I know you're not a fan of the Oppo model, but that's what I'm using... wondered what adjustments you would make for this player?

scottb8888, the only difference from pre to post break-in is the contrast. Bump that up 3-6 points to your liking. I know becuase I asked the same question some time ago. :D

I just programed my remote last night. It was a pretty smooth process. I didn't bother with the codes, as I really couldn't find my specific manufacturer for various gear, so I just used the learning feature and mapped button for button the ones I use on my other remotes.
Page 78 or thereabouts in the manual.
Use the Learn/Edit + 2, and then you face the remotes towards each other, press in the button on the Pio you want to assign, and press the button on your other remote for the command. The light goes solid on the pio remote for a while, then when it blinks again press the learn/edit button and it's done.
I put my Sat, Receiver, and DVD player all in on the Sat function of the pio remote.
Only problem is you can't map all the buttons on the Pio remote. For instance the volume can't be the two main volume buttons beside the Channel up and down...it has to be those two tiny little volume buttons at the bottom of the remote.
That's a little frustrating.

Sam1000 04-13-06, 05:24 PM Is Pioneer coming out with a new 50" model? I'm aware of 1080p which will cost 10K. But the Magnolia guy told me that they are coming out with a new 50" model by June but he did not know the model number. He said that he had the model number for 1080p but will get more information about the new non-1080p model soon. This is the first time I heard about this. This was from Magnolia in Union City,CA.
He also said that the new shipment they are going to get, is for these new model. Now, shall I wait or is this vaporware??

ivoniko 04-13-06, 05:55 PM I connected the wall cable directly to the receiver. I don't have a cable card for the receiver by the way and as the cable is connected directly to the receiver I'm not getting any cable channels, only the 15-20 free channels that you get when using antenna. If that is the case I'm not sure how to answer few of the TV Gude Setup questions, e.g. Do you have a Cable Box connected to this receiver - or in other worgs should I go through cable box setup part.

Do you have the cable going into ant A or B? The TV Guide question are fairly simple. You don't have a cable box, so you should answer no. When it ask if you have an antenna connected, you should say yes.

Stupid question on my part... do you have cable service? Did you run the autoscan in the tuner setup ? Are you saying you have a connection from your cable outlet to the MR, but you are trying to watch antenna channels?
You also say you dont have cable card, which implies you have cable service, so why would you hook up from cable outlet to MR and try to watch antenna channels? See my confusion?
Switch to the tuner input, go into the setup menu, go to tuner options, select "tuner a", if thats what you have connected, and pick if you want cable or antenna, then auto scan for channels.
Then go into the tv guide and set it up the same way, making sure your choices match between both.
I think you just need to follow the easy setup guide in the owners manual.

It's connected into A. And that is exactly what I did, but I can only watch the free channels currently. What do I do now. Excuse my ignorance

D-Nice recommended me to connect the wall cable directly to the MR so I can setup the TV GUIDE which I did. Now the antenna channels show up on my TV and I want to have the cable channels. My cable box doesn't have a cable card. I don't know how to explain it more simply. Thanks

Ok, let me see if I understnad you. You have cable service "and" an OTA antenna? You want to be able to use both the OTA antenna "and" cable....correct? Do you get HD channels? If so, for where....cable or OTA?

I don't have an OTA antenna. I disconnected the wall cable from the cable box and connected it to the MR which is what you said if I understood you correctly. I don't want to be using any antennas. But with wall cable directly to the MR I receive antenna channels when using channel button of my TV remote. When using my cable remote control for changing channels I get only the info of the channel and a black screen. So I can't see any cable channels when the wall cable is connected directly to the MR. Ok. If you want to use a cable box, the TV Guide is completely worthless. Do not use it with a cable box. Now if you really want to use the TV Guide and get all of your cable channels you receive with your cable box, you will need to get a cable card. At any rate, make sure you have the cable connect to your MR thru ant A. TV Guide info only loads while the TV is off. Also it may take a few day for it to completely load....after you have done the TV Guide setup correctly.
I apologize up front for the stupid question. I finally finished reading the entire tread looking for an answer to my question but was unable to find one.
The situation I have is when the TV is off I noticed a purple hue on anything that is reflected off the Plasma or in dark scenes when the outside light gets reflected on to the glass.
For example if I stand on the left side of the plasma and then look at the windows reflected in the panel. I noticed a purple hue glare on the windows when looking at the reflection in the glass.
Is there something wrong with the plasma? I just purchased it and want to know if it’s defective. I guess I’m a little bit paranoid. It took forever to convince my wife and now I’m not sure if this is an issue or not.
Also I was trying to get into the SM but was unable to do so. I tried repeated times and was unable Can someone please PM with the code
thanks
There is nothing wrong with your plasma. Your purple refections are caused by the color filter (and anti-reflection coating) on the panel.

The purple reflection is due to the AR (anti-reflection) coating on the plasma glass. It tends to darken the reflections yet allows light to pass through without discoloration. In some cases it can slightly improve black level but also lowers light output.
thanks so much for the quick response
Truly a collection of great and helpful people.

without a cable card, there's probably not a complete solution for you. now, if you split the cable and hook it to both the MR and the cable box, you should be able to use the tv guide for the free channels, but for the rest you'd have to use the cable box.
ivoniko 04-14-06, 01:36 PM Thanks for the help D-Nice and spinee. As for the remote control it must be defect because I couldn't set it up, I tried both the automatic and the manual instructions and it doesn't work

i'm using a D* H20 for HD and SD and these settings look great. i have a question though. in the past, most of the suggested settings were to leave PureCinema in ADV. now in this post, you recommend STD. what's the difference in the two and why did you change it? would you suggest any additional tweaks for the H20? thanks man. you rock.
I had a service call to fix the fan noise on my media receiver 1130. The techs removed the cover and "repositioned" the fan. Now they can't turn on the TV and they have to go back to the office to get instruction on how to unlock the power. As of now, the MR has all lights lid up (On/Stand by/Rec timer).
While I'm waiting for them to come back, does anyone know what they did? Or how to unlock the code?
Cheers,

search the forums... i know one other user had this problem after taking off the cover.
Did they unplug power before taking off the cover? (I bet they applied power to test the fan after moving it...)
There is a mechanical switch that is pressed while the cover is on. The other user reported that if you never had the unit plugged in while the cover was off, there were no issues. If you have to power with the cover off, ensure that switch is down.
There was also a fix for this, but I dont remember it exactly. I know it is here if you search.

Well, I'm not sure what they did but for sure they didn't unplug all powers prior to removing the MR. I was hoping someone knew the sequence to unlock the MR so I can work w/ these guys. As of now, the display can't power it up so not sure if they can can get to the service menu. They so called authorized serv repair center told me Pioneer will contact them to fix the issue but they may not get the solution until next week.

The service menu is accessed from a powered-off state. The service menu code should work independent of normal tv functions. So even though tv functions wont power on, you should still be able to get to the service menu as normal.
We just cant post the codes for you in this forum. Bruzzi has them though in the calibration forum. That will get you into the menu, then you should be able to find the reset option. PM Joe_R since he has done it before.
CHolleman 04-14-06, 05:36 PM i'm using a D* H20 for HD and SD and these settings look great. i have a question though. in the past, most of the suggested settings were to leave PureCinema in ADV. now in this post, you recommend STD. what's the difference in the two and why did you change it? would you suggest any additional tweaks for the H20? thanks man. you rock.
anyone?
anyone?
Pure Cinema is a "per user" setting. I personally keep mine on ADV. However, others prefer STD or Off. I would recommend that you play with each and see which one renders the best picture per your setup.
Is Pioneer coming out with a new 50" model? I'm aware of 1080p which will cost 10K. But the Magnolia guy told me that they are coming out with a new 50" model by June but he did not know the model number. He said that he had the model number for 1080p but will get more information about the new non-1080p model soon. This is the first time I heard about this. This was from Magnolia in Union City,CA.
He also said that the new shipment they are going to get, is for these new model. Now, shall I wait or is this vaporware??
Good question. I would like to know the answer as well. I already have the 5050 and was looking to pic up the 1080p or the 5060. So the answer to this question will be helpful.

TroutBumInTX 04-14-06, 10:57 PM Guys/Gals on this post:
I just took delivery of a 5060 and spent most of this evening looking through the manuals. My questions is this: I have a Hughes/Tivo unit with the usual RCA connectors and S-video (no component video). Which on should I go with RCA os S-video?
My current plan is to run the satellite feed through the Hughes/Tivo unit and then to the media receiver on the 5060.
I realize I need to upgrade to a HD - satellite unit, but want to fire this puppy up in the morning.
Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Kevin
