View Full Version : Official Pioneer 4360/5060/Elite Experiences, Set-up, Questions & Pictures Thread!!! billybob_jcv 04-15-06, 12:18 AM S-Video to the media receiver is the best picture from an SD DTivo. ivoniko 04-15-06, 01:09 AM I have 4360 and the same flickering problem on HBO HD. It's definitely HBO otherwise it would be on all the channels viper7005 04-15-06, 02:51 AM I have a 4360 and it is not flickering on only HBO-on channel #70 with D*. And I have a 1130 which it is flickering on HBO white lines at the top it's got to be the HD format???? WilliWu 04-15-06, 10:04 AM If flickering means the picture and sound are cutting in and out, it's probably the cable company. My 4360 with CableCard is more sensitive to problems than the Panasonic HDTV with a cable box on the same cable. I thought the the flickering problem that I was seeing on only one HD channel was the TV until the next day when the Panasonic on a cable box started doing the same thing. When I called Comcast, they told me they were having problems and working on it. They fixed it a few hours later. scrosenb 04-15-06, 06:22 PM So, I've been using my 5060 for just about 3 weeks now and am very happy. I really need some advice though regarding the cable box settings. I have comcast digital cable with the box hooked up to my 5060 directly via HDMI. The cable box is an HD DVR, Motorola I believe, and it has some basic setup options that alters the signal going to my 5060. Specifically, the box has settings for the demension of the TV (16:9, 4:3 letterbox, 4:3 pan&scan), also the resolution of the output (1080I, 740P, 740I, etc.). It also has a setting for the output of native 4:3 programing. I remember reading a posting somewhere in the past pages that related to these settings, but can't find it. I thought the posting said to send the signals straight through to the TV to let the Pioneer do all the processing. Is this true? How do I do this? Any thoughts, anyone please??? WilliWu 04-15-06, 08:05 PM It's been a while since I set up my Motorola 6412 DVR, but this is what I remember about it: 1. Use 16:9 for aspect ratio. 2. While the "native" mode for the TV is 720 p, 1080i also looks great on HD and some even prefer it. Experiment with these two for yourself. 3. There is also a setting for SD 4:3 material that they refer to as a 4:3 override/default, or something to that effect. SD material and DVDs will look really bad if you do not get that right and I believe the proper setting is 480p. Once again, it's easy to experiment. If you want to get rid of the cable box and let the TV do the processing, have Comcast install a CableCard. You will however loose the DVR capability and have to rely on a TV Guide Online that is not nearly as good as the Comcast cable guide. Mightyburner 04-16-06, 12:02 AM After much debate I finally pulled the trigger and purchased the 930HD. I want to thank everyone who's ever posted a question on this thread because it truly helped me. A special thanks to D-Nice and Joe-R who responded to my PM's. Half of us could sit side by side at a Bar/Lounge and never utter a word but a site this this allows us to connect with folks we will never meet but still have a connection with. The sappy stuff aside,,,I LOVE THIS TV!! If I ever learn how to attach pictures I will post a few. The only thing I don't like is: 1) I didn't get the 1130 :( . 2) I still have an old a$$ Sony DVD player. Using the interlaced mode rather than progressive looks better to me. 3) Until I have my custom credenza made, I had to disconnect my Paradigm CC-470. Arrggh!!! 4) The MR makes a horrible noise that I can hear 9 feet way when the volume is low. It's not the fan, it's an audible humming noise. If I put pressure on the top of the unit it's much better but still audible. My dealer has already agreed to swap out the unit so hopefully this helps. My only question for now involves the display's resolution. I live in New York and have an SA8300HD set to pass-through the signal. Why is it when I look at ABC the display says 1080i and not 720P?? WilliWu 04-16-06, 08:31 AM --- 4) The MR makes a horrible noise that I can hear 9 feet way when the volume is low. My dealer has already agreed to swap out the unit so hopefully this helps. After having one set of fans replaced on my 4360, I would say that 9 feet is pretty good for a Pio MR. Let us know if your replacement is quieter or louder. The broader problem here is a a really stupid, industry wide system design that requires hot high speed processors to run 24/7. The Pio MR consumes 24 watts whether it is on or in the standby mode and that's the reason for the fan. Cable and satellite boxes consume as much as 50 watts in their standby modes and are generally even louder than the Pio MR. The problem is that a cooperative effort between equipment manufacturers and cable/satellite companies is needed and the government panel that is addressing the national energy concerns is making a career out of a job that needs a near term solution. CHolleman 04-16-06, 08:49 AM for those of you that are experiencing "flicker" on some channels, are you running a D* H20 box? there's a huge thread in the HDTV reception forum about the H20. very poorly built box that over heats and causes all sorts of problems. the video drops in and out occasionally and i get some momentary pixelation as well. D* is swapping out the H20-600's for the H20-100's if you agree to the lease agreement. the -100 runs substantially cooler and doesn't have the probs of the -600. check the cable card door to see what model you have....or crack an egg on top of the box. if it starts to cook, you have a -600. kidziti 04-16-06, 10:12 AM It's been a while since I set up my Motorola 6412 DVR, but this is what I remember about it: 1. Also, is there a way to use a cable card and still get DVR capability? A cable card wouldn't make sense unless it actually allows a better signal feed to the 1130 - is this actually the case? viper7005 04-16-06, 12:39 PM 1130for those of you that are experiencing "flicker" on some channels, are you running a D* H20 box? there's a huge thread in the HDTV reception forum about the H20. very poorly built box that over heats and causes all sorts of problems. the video drops in and out occasionally and i get some momentary pixelation as well. And I am not saying there are no problems H20. I think it is in the signal we are getting? I am going to hook H20 to my 1130 see what happens when I get time. I was watching HBO last night and it happen on one movie and then it fine all night. cammot 04-16-06, 12:44 PM I have the 5060HD. Could anyone please tell me how I remove the small input image on the top right hand of the screen, which indicates which input I am currently in, I cannot seem to get it off the screen while watching a cable channel. I am not sure which settings to tweak. Thanks BEN mixtapem 04-16-06, 02:39 PM i have had my 4360 for about 2weeks now even tho i exchanged one becuz i thought the details in blacks were bad...the replacement is also doing the samething so maybe nothings wrong with the panels its just darker..i also notice some flickering and im using a pioneer hd cable box dont know model # offhand but inspite of these flaws I LOVE THIS SET its everything i could have hoped for and more even SD is very watchable coming from a hitachi 42hdt52a the IR was TERRIBLE i mean i couldnt watch sports for 5 min without IR now with the pioneer ive played video games for 1-2hrs at a time and watch sports and no IR at all...i had 2 hitachis they both had terrible ir problems where the pioneer doesnt overall i am very satisfied with the 4360 ...maybe a calibration will help reveal darker details i was thinkin of gettin a new panny 50" for my livingroom (pioneer is in my bedroom) cuz its a little bit cheaper,i might have to rethink that idea and maybe i will get the 5060 or 1130 instead seeing as how impressed i was with the pioneer once i had it setup . and now the false contouring problem i had with my hitachi is gone so it makes shows like sunrise earth that much better!im not sorry i spent the extra $$ on the pioneer...there is one other problem the black piano bezel attracts dust like no other ive had to clean it like 3 times since i got it is there a trick to stop the static? perhaps one of the plasma screen cleaners? dukmahsik 04-16-06, 03:54 PM man if only pio would make a 37 in pdp kojak_nyc 04-17-06, 10:20 AM Has anyone hooked up their Pio to a Dish VIP 622 DVR? I have it working great on component, but HDMI doesn't work at all. (yes, I did enable HDMI mode on the input, and I tried both Input 1 and 3) I don't have another HDMI device to test, so I was wondering if it could be a compatibility issue. Dish makes sure to call it an HDTV Digital Video/Audio input rather than HDMI, so I am wondering if they didn't adhere to the specs entirely. MaliciousBraham 04-17-06, 11:16 AM This is good information to know, and I'd really like to hear any other comments about this. In particular, I'm interested in the best way to set up the 6412 to allow the best feed to the 1130HD. Also, is there a way to use a cable card and still get DVR capability? A cable card wouldn't make sense unless it actually allows a better signal feed to the 1130 - is this actually the case? I have the 6412 and prefer all hd content be sent to the panel @ 1080i. I leave SD content at 480i and let the panel handle the scaling for it (I think the panel's scaling is better). Its really just personal preference. I think the 720p picture is softer, while the 1080i picture is sharper. I prefer sharp to soft, so that made the choice easy for me. Others here prefer 720p, some like 1080i. Whatever floats your boat :) Cable card will give you the best image quality since there is no cable box that could be causing artifacts/problems. The cable box probably has worse internals than those in your tv, so you want to remove it from the signal path if pure outright image quality is what you seek. Once you have cable card, Tuner A becomes the cable card tuner. A cable card is really just a stored list of cable station frequencies and digital access codes. It does not have its own tuner, so it has to use the one in your tv (Tuner A in Pioneer's case). Using cable card does not prohibit you from also attaching a cable box to another input as well, so that is how most people choose to keep DVR functionality. Tuner A for normal live watching (best image quality) with the DVR on another input for recorded shows. There is not a huge difference in quality by using cable card, but to those image quality freaks among us, it can make all the difference. The main advantage is being able to have all your digital channels that are encrypted (HBO HD for example) in your normal tuner A lineup. I wanted to get cable card a while back, but after getting used to having my DVR for a while now, I cant watch tv without it. I rarely watch live tv at all anymore. I actually think a cable card would hinder my personal viewing habits. It would allow me to get all my hd channels in the tuner layout though... I'm a chronic commercial skipper. I would probably have to pay extra for the cable card (since I'm not giving up my DVR :)), so I dont know if it is worth it to me. I might try one sometime if I have to have the techs out for some reason. hope this gives more info. MaliciousBraham 04-17-06, 11:23 AM I have the 5060HD. Could anyone please tell me how I remove the small input image on the top right hand of the screen, which indicates which input I am currently in, I cannot seem to get it off the screen while watching a cable channel. I am not sure which settings to tweak. Thanks BEN Try pressing the display button on the remote to force it to go away. If that works, it is probably just a loose wire at the MR or display (one of the two main connectors). If not, I would call pioneer service. When the channel achieves sync, the display screen should go away. There was someone else in the thread that had this problem... searching may help you out. andyboy 04-17-06, 11:34 PM How come analog AUDIO signals are louder than HD AUDIO signals? MaliciousBraham 04-18-06, 02:51 PM How come analog AUDIO signals are louder than HD AUDIO signals? I've got no idea on that one... maybe a difference in standards... It annoys me too occasionally. nick mpt 04-18-06, 05:19 PM D-Nice, I also have similar problem as nick mpt mentioned above. On occasion, I see the the lower part (it is always the bottom part) as flickering lines and if it happens long enough I could see that it's actually the same image from the top repeated (not clear because this image is made of flickering lines). I thought it was jitter, someone said Pioneer has to replace a panel inside the TV. I still have the 30 days return if I need to exchange it. But I need to be sure what causes this first. As I'm out of town right now, I can only try your suggestion once I got home. Could there be another explanation? Is something broken? Could harsh treatment during shipment process damage something? Is it manufacturing issue? Anyone? Thanks. I called Future Shop (owned by Best Buy in CAN), they're replacing my unit no questions asked...they said it is definitely a panel problem. Hopefully your store will replace yours as well! On another note, I'm getting alot of judder or 'strobe' when the images move across the screen...I know this has probably already been addressed earlier in the stream, but does anyone know if there is something I can do with my settings to decrease this, or is this something I will have to live with. tpham 04-18-06, 06:57 PM I have SA3250HD via component to 1130 under "pass-through". I see a lot jitters/flickers on ESPN-HD Score Ticker when the news scrolls from right to left (no prob w/ up & down). It takes a minute or 2 to 'stabilize'. Do I have bad STB, reception or interference? Cheers, TP freddy23 04-18-06, 08:48 PM I have the 5060HD. Dale SrPicman 04-18-06, 10:25 PM Is Pioneer coming out with a new 50" model? I'm aware of 1080p which will cost 10K. But the Magnolia guy told me that they are coming out with a new 50" model by June but he did not know the model number. He said that he had the model number for 1080p but will get more information about the new non-1080p model soon. This is the first time I heard about this. This was from Magnolia in Union City,CA. He also said that the new shipment they are going to get, is for these new model. Now, shall I wait or is this vaporware?? My Dealer believes this will be the "1140", and Pioneer CS says they "always" change Elite models in July/Aug. No info on details; some speculation it will be 1080p (maybe the US version of the "5000" recently introduced in Europe?) No info on pricing. Since the 1080p 50" FHD1 (in June @ $10K) has no MR, could the "1140" be the integrated 1080p model, at some premium to the 1130???? I'm THIS close to buying an 1130 and obviously anxious to know all this. MaliciousBraham 04-19-06, 10:12 AM Announcing new models and actually being able to buy them are two seperate things... 1130's were announced in July/Aug, but were not delivered until October-ish, and that was buying sight-unseen (no display models on floors yet). Pioneer has said they want 1080 displays available for world cup though. If that happens, I dont think it will be the replacement for the 1130. It would cut the 1130 product lifetime down to 9 months or less, and also it would replace the 1130 with a significantly more costly display when the 1130 is selling pretty well now. just my opinion. edit: There is a thread in the main forum on the new models. The 1080p plasma is a seperate model. There were two 7G 720p panels announced as well, but the release dates on those apparently are not the same as the 1080p model. Those are what would become the 5070 and 4270 in the US, and are typically the basis for the elite models. The new 507 and 427 models (no longer a 43" model) do not have seperate MR's. There are minor improvements from my first glance, nothing major. malo52 04-19-06, 10:22 AM I recently set up my new 4360 with the help of this forum. I recently noticed that when viewing DVD I notice a thin black line at the top and bottom of the image. The line is about 1/2 inch from the image itself and is located on the top and bottom of the image. Its not always there. When I see it I pause the movie and then switch to different screen sizes to see if its a fault in a particular spot in the plasma. But after trying different screen sizes I see it at the same position regardless of size 4:3 Zoom Full etc. I currently have a samsung DVD player displaying the image through component cables at 480HP. I believe it has to do with the image itself rather than the plasma. Not sure if its the MR or the DVD player itself. chelsea_hye 04-19-06, 10:35 AM Ok So I pulled the plug and got the 5060hd. I waited for the Panny 50px60U to come out and then couldn't do it. I know I must be crazy, but I'm not that impressed by the Panasonic. I'm really excited about the 5060. It was supposed to be delivered this yesterday, but now TVA is telling me it's back ordered and they don't know when it will be available. I was kind of hesitant to go with them b/c others had similar experiences but they had a great price (sub $4k). Anyone else having problems? Any info would be great. Food_Doctor 04-19-06, 12:03 PM I had been wanting to buy a Panasonic plasma since last fall. I finally gave up waiting for the (600U) to be released and ordered the 5060HD from Satellite & Sound. Their prices were competitive and the entire process went without a hitch. I've had the TV for a week now and its fantastic. The guy that came to install the cablecard had never worked on a Pioneer couldn't figure out where to plug the coax into the TV. I showed him the media box input and he got the cablecard setup without further problems. He told me that the picture on the Pioneer was the best he had ever seen in a flat panel. I'm not sorry I spent the extra bucks on the Pioneer. chelsea_hye 04-19-06, 01:04 PM I was just offered a deal on an 1130 for about $700 more than I'm paying for my 5060. I'm in the same boat as you with TVA. My 5060 was supposed to be delivered this week and was given a call yesterday telling me it could be a couple of days. So I just called them now to get more details about the situation and the CSR told me it could be a month! A week, I would of been fine, but a month will be a problem for me. scrosenb 04-19-06, 02:15 PM It's been a while since I set up my Motorola 6412 DVR, but this is what I remember about it: 1. Swivel, tilt (requires screwdriver), weighs probably 10lbs to boot. I've heard the 5060 stand described as "flimsy" in comparison to the bulky 1130 stand. Other than that, it comes down to the black asthetics and how much you want to be able to tweak your display, and if you will have pro calibration. The 5060 also does not have the media card slot for photo viewing if I recall correctly. If you can pick 2 of the above points, I would go for the 1130. Also, my DVD player has media card slots, so I could use that, so this plus seems to be out. MB what do mean about the black asthetics? I thought that both panels look fairly similar (i.e., piano black bezel, separate MR, etc.). Are there big differences? Unless the 1130 processes SD significantly better, I don't think I'd see a difference? Any thoughts? First make sure that you are watching a real HD broadcast such as can be found on Discovery HD or the PBS HD channel all the time. Other formats must be either stretched (distorted) or shown with black bars to fill the screen. Press the "size" button on your 5060 to cycle through the various display options. The cable box should be set for 16:9 & either 720p or 1080i to get a proper HD picture. For the SD 4:3 shows, you just have to choose you poison (Distortion or bars) by cycling through the options with the "size" button. I assume your Comcast DVR is a Motorola 6412. Telling it that it is connected to a 4:3 TV is definitely not the way to go. D-Nice 04-20-06, 03:38 PM Ok guys and gals, I'm offically "plasma-less" as I have sold my 930. I'm thinking of purchasing a 1080p 65" commercial Panny "if" they come out this winter "and" they are actually worth it. As far as overkill....nope. Can anyone verify my belief that it does incorporate QAM decoding in its digital tuner. And if so, it will properly display any unencrypted HD channels that come in over my cable - WITHOUT going through a STB, CableCard, etc. Just hook the cable into the 1130 tuner input - right? Mightyburner Hmm I have the SA 3250 and I had to enable the 720P Resolution by enabling it in the Box that is done by holding the guide and info button together when the box is off. You get into the setup and then choose whether you have a 720P supporting display. Also if you connect via Digital cable like DVI to HDMI than you will get another option saying Auto DVI which will select the original resolution of brodcast. I Personally prefer the 1080i setting as the Box doesn't have to resync whenever you go from 1080i broadcast to 720 p.. Just my .02 Cent stick with 1080i. I don't have a plasma (yet) but I would recommend at least a basic power conditioner because of the noise I've seen it remove from the picture both on my television and my parents'. A Videophile 04-21-06, 11:09 AM How important is it to have a power conditioner for the 1130? Is a good surge protector enough? TIA SrPicman I'd say that a "good" (defined as one with isolated power line filtering/bank) surge protector should be plenty good enough. On the other hand, if the circuit on which your 1130 is connected contains some heavy, intermittent loads (like a space heater, clothes iron or business laser printer) then power conditioning may be in order. chelsea_hye 04-21-06, 11:28 AM I'm with you! What you're seeing is a subltle brightness shift... the pioneers reduce the brightness in order to decrease power consumption, and sometimes it's visible... I started noticing it a lot and put my power back on standard. This, however, will change your brightness setting a bit... an easy fix though. rmb1035 04-21-06, 02:06 PM Since you can't input 768p from a VP into a 930, what's the next best solution? 480i over HDMI? 480p over HDMI? 720p over HDMI? 1080i over HDMI? I think you get my drift. :) Actually you CAN input 768P into the 930 from a Video Processor - you just have to use the VGA input rather than the HDMI input. For example, the Vantage HD video processor (by Calibre) outputs 1024X768 over VGA so that combo should work well. However, as D-Nice points out, 480i over HDMI (with the 930 performing the de-interlacing and scaling) renders an excellent result as well. mhfnet 04-21-06, 06:39 PM I was just offered a deal on an 1130 for about $700 more than I'm paying for my 5060. Any one have feelings if its worth the extra money. The forum seems kinda split between the PQ benefits v. $ I'm really confused about what to do. I struggled back and forth over a month between the 5060 and 1130 as I was also offer the 1130 for $700 more. I ended up getting the 1130 because I knew if I got the 1130 the only regret would be the extra cost. The first couple of weeks of having my 1130 I thought I made a mistake. However after I really started to use some of the advanced picture control settings on the 1130 I was sold. Even though the 5060 is a great picture I feel I easily squeezed another $500 in PQ out of 1130 and the 2 year warranty, stand, and quality control on an Elite (that probably assured me of getting a unit with no dead pixels) made up the rest. Both are great but the 1130 was definitely worth $700 more to me. D-Nice, do you agree with WilliWu that I need to shift the output on the DVR to 16:9? OK! I checked my Motorola 6412 settings and this is exactly what works for me: 1. Set TV type to 16:9 2. Set Y Pb Pr Output to 1080i. (720p will also work, but I prefer 1080i) 3. Set 4:3 Override to 480i (480p might also work, but I have not tried it) 4. Exit the setup menu, turn the cable box to a real HD program and then cycle your Pioneer through the various display options by pushing the "size" button until you see one you like. Full is the one I use most often for HD. If that does not give you a great HD picture that fills the screen when tuned to a real HD program, then call Comcast and tell them your cable box is broken. It doesn't work like that. Pioneer isn't "3 generations behind". Panasonic has been at it longer, but Pioneer didn't start from scratch and reinvent the plasma panel - they (like everyone else) was able to build on existing technology when they built their first panel. You can compare generations for a given mfr, but IMHO it doesn't really make sense to compare generation numbers across mfrs. DMP2722 04-23-06, 02:13 PM Just a follow up. I know many that purchased the Sony SXRD's where having some issues and I was one of them. Many started to look at the Pioneer Plasmas and purchased them. I opted for the wait a bit and swap out the SXRD and I can tell you my March 06 build is perfect. At this time I don't think it is so much the build date as I have seen older build dates that are perfect as well and more of a defect in some of the sets. Mine had the extreme Green Donut on start up that would go to a; 70% screen; Green Haze that showed on all inputs. I also had convergence issues and blacks that were Blue/Purple. My new set has none of these issues at all. No Green at start up; regardless of what Sony said was normal warm up mine has none at all. No Green Haze again Sony said it had something to do with temperature; Ok sure! TIA SrPicman The hdmi spec says that the destination device tells the originating device how many speakers it has, and the signal is modified appropriately. Since the 1130 only has 2 speakers, the hdmi interface tells this and therefore you get 2 speaker sound (downmixed from the 5.1 stream if available). The most reliable (across all equipment) setup is to just use the HDMI for video and run a seperate optical cable to your receiver direct from your source (dvd player for example). If your receiver supports hdmi switching, then the receiver knows it has more than 2 speakers attached and will setup the appropriate stream, and there will be no need for an additional optical cable. Be aware a lot of cable boxes have issues with HDMI switching. The internal tuners on the 1130 MR can support DD, though, so if you use the internal tuners, also remember to run another optical cable from the MR to your receiver as well. There is a menu option for Dolby Digital vs PCM on the digital out, and it should be set to DD. And yes, I dont think there is an option to totally disable the speakers if not connected. I have them turned to 0 Vollume (not muted). When I hit mute, I have the closed captioning set to turn on. And I even understand it. Since no good deed goes unpunished, I have 2 more questions: 1. What's the recommendation for "Pro Adjust" PQ settings for a new 1130 and for daytime ambient that is pretty bright? 2. My STB is SA8300HD, andI have used "Easy Setup". This sets all output to 1080i. Is there a way (and is there a benefit) to do a 480i override for native 4:3 content? (The "Advanced Setup" allows you to set it up so you can display any source resolution, but that seems generally like more trouble than it's worth.) Looking forward to your thoughts. SrPicman We have motorola boxes with comcast service locally, so I cant help you out with the SA8300HD questions. I've never even seen an SA box in person, much less used one. Several others in this thread have though, so I'm sure someone will chime in. My settings probably wont help too much since they are for a Motorola box also. If you take a look at the link in my signature, you can see pictures of how my room is lighted (windows, etc.), and also my settings. I have no windows at all to the rear of the seating, but 1 entire wall is windows to the side of the set. Even then, light is no issue for me. I connected it via expensive HDMI cable and I have picture but no audio to the TV. I took the cable back to Best Buy to test and the cable worked fine on a HDMI DVD player. I spend several hours on the phone with Comcast and I am swapping the box out today but I'm not very hopefull. Has anyone seen this, or know of a solution? mefromfl 04-26-06, 08:17 PM I had a pioneer repair guy came to my house the other day to look at a problem i'm having with my 4360, i apparently unhooked the hdmi cable fromt he MR when i was moving the MR around while the direct tv reciever was still connect to it, so now when i'm chaning channels and going to diffrent resoutions, the tv would take a few tries to get the signal from the hdmi. He says he was able to reproduce the same problem as me by doing what i did, and he says he needs to do a software reset on my MR. My question is, is there a way i can do this myself, because i have would have to wait for him for another week to come to do this for me. Also, my tv has some jittering problems with hortizonal scrolls, he tells me he would had to take my tv off the wall and tighten up some screws to fix this, anyone seen this problem before, and if this is the correct way to fix it? Does pioneer replace everything easily? or do they just repair? Seems like my repair guy was able to reproduce the problem with his pioneer, and he says there is a bulletin about my issue on line, he did a full reset on my MR and the tv worked great for about 10mins, but after that, the same symptoms is happening again. He is suggesting to me to take the Panel of my wall so he can tighten up all the screws and wires. Is this what service people suppose to do? I paid a premiumn for this TV and i would think i can get it replace or send me a new MR, but pioneer won't. Anyone have better solutions? billybob_jcv 04-26-06, 11:15 PM You can't expect them to fix it if you won't take it off the wall. SrPicman 05-04-06, 04:47 PM OK, I'm 10 days with my 1130. Here are some observations. I'd be grateful for any responses as to how my experience so far compares with y'all's. Settings are all still "out of the box", except Contrast, which I set to 25 vs. the original 40. I'm running from a SA8300HD (fixed at 1080i) with video component hook up to MR and optical audio directly to my receiver (plus 2-ch audio from MR to receiver). The daytime ambient is quite bright. A. PICTURE (1130 is almost always set at PURE/FULL with STB at NORMAL for HD. I use STB ZOOM 1 for SD to fill the screen. For DVD. I'm running an old NTSC Sony with S-Video to MR and optical audio to receiver (no upconvert, not progressive). Daytime is quite soft. My 15" SD Toshiba LCD in a less bright room gives a brighter and more vivid picture. Night PQ with HD sources is wonderful with sports, DISC, PBS, INHD, and most network material, e.g. "Boston Legal", though scenes can appear a bit dark. DVDs seem surprisingly good; better than SD TV, though not as good as HD. Full Screen DVDs fill the 1130 and seem quite satisfactory. B.SOUND (STB is set at DD). Generally fine. But volume of HD source material seems a bit low -- then the commercials BLAST! Moreso than I recall pre-1130/digital cable. Normal SD volume seems louder. C. APPEARANCE. GREAT! What do you think? What have I missed? Any suggestions? TIA SrPicman Mightyburner 05-05-06, 01:19 PM Thank you to everyone on this forum - I've learned so much. I have a theory on which combination should produce the best picture, which is based on the following: Reason #1: The 59-avi can output 8 bit RGB or 8 bit YCbCr over HDMI. Reason #2: As reported here, the the processing in the 1130HD is 10 bit. Reason #3: I am assuming the video procesing in the 1130HD is performed in the YCbCr format. If the above reasons are valid, then sending YCbCr via HDMI at 480i from the 59-avi should result in the least amount of processing to the signal prior to deinterlacing and scaling. The logic for this paragraph is that the 59-avi and the 1130HD are both utilizing the YCbCr signal format, so no conversions (which can be problematic) occur. This dictates sending YCbCr from the 59-avi Further, aside from matching the video signal format (YCbCr) between the devices, the 10 bit processing capability in the 1130HD should have better performance than the 59-avi's 8 bit processing. This dictates sending out 480i from the 59-avi. Lastly, when using the YCbCr video format over HDMI from the 59-avi, it would seem the HDMI Video setting on the 1130HD should be set to "Component 4:2:2" instead of "Auto". This is a theory, so I'm curious to get some feedback on it. Also, can anyone confirm if the assumption in reason #3 is correct? FYIO: It has been reported over in the 59-avi thread that sending RGB via HDMI at 480i from the player results in some clipping of the video signals. There is a "fix" of sorts by using a combination of settings, but it comes at the expense of some missing steps in the greyscale due to rounding errors. See the 59-avi thread for more info on this, if you are interested. DBear 05-11-06, 08:13 AM Hi, I have a Pio 5060HD that Ive owned for 3 months, burn-in has just occurred from SD .. it isnt image retention, can clearly see a program I was watching 2 days ago. I am watching in Standard picture mode, not high contrast and brightness settings. Is there a way I can remove this burn-in? If so please help.. and can someone give some tips on preventing this from happening again.. Im not sure why this happened I wasnt "abusing" it in any way to my knowledge anyways. I've got one problem though. I purchased 2 HDMI cables through monoprice. They both appear to be fine, but I was having problems with my DVD hook-up (into an LG progressive scan). Occasionally the signal would work and occasionally it would cycle through snow then a black screen...snow then a black screen...and so on. Is this a faulty HDMI cable? I've switched them and it appears to be fine, but I don't know b/c it was kind of random before. Anyone's insight would be helpful. Thanks again to everyone on this forum. I think i'm experieceing the same problem too, I had a repair guy came out and he was able to reproduce the same problem by keep un pluging his hdmi cable while the power cord is still plugs in. He says there is a special bulletin on pioneer website about this issue and it seems to be needing a hard reset. He did a hard reset on mine and it worked for a couple of hours, but after that it started to have the problem again. The only way he says he might fix it is to tighten all the stuff that's on the panel and maybe replaceing the motherboard for the MC. Give your tech guy a call. I think many hold the opinion that bumping up the contrast to taste is probably all you need to do unless you decide to get it ISF calibrated. Just use common sense with your viewing; vary channel logo watching, full screen watching, and 2:35 widescreen to minimize the chance of any image retention, and you should be fine. drsiebling 05-12-06, 09:33 PM So, I just scheduled my ISF calibration for my 1130HD. I would like to ask a question about an odd thing the 1130 did this evening and wanted to know if it was the first sign of a problem. My 1130 was purchased in December 2005. It's build date for the glass was October 2005 as shown on the label inside the display itself. The set has between 100 and 200 hours, though I have not done the check via the remote control yet. What happened this evening after about an hour of viewing a DVD, the display turned itself off. The media box stayed on, it's light stayed blue, but was blinking. The LED on the display went red. After a few seconds, I used the remote to turn off the media box. I waited about 30 to 40 seconds and used the remote to turn the set back on. It was back to normal after that and it worked fine for the next hour. The other odd thing occurred the night before. I had been watching a very long DVD, after it was over, I used the remote to go from input 1 to Antenna 1 as I view programing OTA. It took it many seconds (Way longer then normal) to go from a black screen and no sound to recieve a TV signal and send it to the display. I don't know if these two occurrences are related, but it did give me pause for concern. I suppose I'm okay, it's wthin the warrenty period. Anyone experience this? Perhaps it just needed a resetting by powering off and on. Thanks for all the fine help here! Nelson Nelson, if you had not touched the panel remote for three hours, it could have turned off by itself, which is normal. You said you were watching a DVD for an hour, but did not mention what you were doing before that time. However, that blinking light on the MR would indicate a problem. Did you check if your black and white cables are tight? That's the only thing I can think of right now. Regarding the delay in switching inputs, I don't have any problems when going from input 1-4 to Antenna. But, my unit does takes a few seconds to switch between inputs 1-4. I also have an "issue" related to my HD-DVR on HDMI input 3: The DVR is set to auto HDMI, which outputs the native signal of the station (480i, 720p, 1080i). When I switch HDTV stations on the DVR, sometimes the panel cannot "sync" when going from 720p / 1080i to 480i. The screen stays black, and there are little brighntess fluctuations indicating the panel is trying to sync to the 480i signal. To fix it, I have to switch to input 2 and then back to input 3. Sometimes the input buttons don't respond, and I have to switch to antenna, and then back to the other inputs. Strange and annoying, but I think it is related to HDMI sync issues. Anyone else have that problem? Mark Viventis 05-14-06, 10:18 AM I've been with my 5060 for about 10 days now. Settings provided in this forum are very appreciated. It could also be a problem with your DVD player's HDMI output. This behavior occurs when the TV and the source equipment do not sync well. It happens to me sometimes when I try to connect my Moxi DVR box to the MR of my 5060HD. However, the same DVI/HDMI cable and connection work fine when I use the Oppo DVD player. The cable guy says there are a lot of people that experience this problem using DVI out on the Moxi box. Try switching sources to see if the problem disappears. Your display shut off because it failed to d/l the latest TV Guide info. Make sure you completely disable it by setting the zipcode to all zeros. Nelsun 05-14-06, 12:07 PM giomania and D-Nice- Thank you for your quick input! To answer giomania's questions, the plasma was first turned on when I went to watch that DVD. The DVD player is an older one, connected via Component. After an hour, the panel shut off. The funny thing is that the night before, I was watching the new Towering Inferno DVD and that was a long disc, and the display didn't shut off then. Just that delay in switiching input I mentioned. I believe what D-Nice suggested sounds like the answer. I had shut off the auto-on TV Guide function, but I didn't do anything else like reset the zip code as suggested. It was late last night when this happened, much later then I should be up! So if this is the cause, then I'll know what the cause is. For now I'll leave the TV Guide as is, if it happens again, then I'll reset the zipcode to 00000 and retest. Having the TV Guide is nice though. One more comment, another member here suggested Pure settings to me that his friend got when he had his 1130 calibrated by an ISF tech. I've been using these settings the last few months and at first they looked really muted to me, but now when I go back to the settings I got from using an old VE DVD, those looked awfully over cooked! The Pure settings do look very natural to me now. Thanks to the members again! DonP Hi HiDefDon, I am not using the back panel. You should see all the interconnect and other wiring back there. I have a 6" gap between the back of the cabinet and the back wall so that I can have wiring access to all the components without having to pull them out individually. The open back also lets heat escape better. I chose the frosted glass option for the front doors. I wanted to stay away from black as much as possible, so as to make the cabinet less massive visually. The IR remotes go through both the perforated metal and glass options BTW. My question: I have read on here that people can tell what kind of signal the PDP is getting, beit 480i or 480p, as well as several other settings. What is the correct way to tell what the signal is coming into the unit? I know the best thing to do it get HDTV, that is in the works, and around 3 months away of so. I used to have a PACE box from TWC and all of my HD channels stretched and fit just fine when I was using my TiVo via S-video input. But once I switched to the Scientific Atlanta box, it locks in on the HD signal (even when it's SD) and won't let me stretch it. I tried messing with fixed output vs. passthrough but it didn't help. It doesn't do it via component connection though. Via component, I can even stretch my HD material. Thanks, MB! drsiebling 05-19-06, 02:59 PM Okay... well, the calibration is finished and it yielded some very interesting results! My calibrator is Steve Martin of Smart Calibration (www.smartcalibration.com). He calibrated my previous Mitsubishi RPTV and is very well respected. Here's the equipment he used: Milori Colorfacts CF-6000 Spectrophotometer Milori Pioneer C3 Remote AV Standards TVS Pro color temperature reference (optical comparator) Accupel HDG-3000 HDTV calibration generator So, first things first. I was pretty happy with the picture quality on the 1130 before the calibration. My main grip was in my inability to get the black levels corrected as well as possible on this panel. Color was fine, but did need some fine tuning. I've been running with D-Nive's settings since the initial purchase of this panel. I was very curious to see if the calibration would correct these issues and bring the panel to another level of greatness. In short: it certainly did! Steve started off by accessing the ISF C3 menus and began calibrating. From the start it was obvious that something wasn't right. Believe it or not, the C3 menus give the calibrator even LESS control of color levels and color temperature. Green was a real problem from the ISF menus. After making numberous color adjustments with little or no results, we finally figured out that the C3 functions are fundamentally flawed. If you set the TV up in C3 and then switch the TV back to pure mode, the C3 settings are permanently LOST! To make matters worse, the C3 menu would not allow full control of the green levels in the set. So, after almost 2 hours of trying to make c3 work properly, We abandoned it and went straight to calibrating from Pure mode. This yielded IMMEDIATE results. Steve was able to dial in the settings very quickly and when completed, the color level histogram and grey-scale both came in reading PERFECTLY. Steve remarked that this was one of the first TVs he'd ever seen that was perfectly accurate in color. Obviously, as with any plasma, green levels were off the chart in the beginning. Now they are right in line. Furthermore, all of the DNR and Mpeg NR settings were disabled as they both add a slight amount of edge enhancement to the picture. PureCinema is now in ADV mode, and we found that outputting 480p from my Denon DVD-1600 eliminated the judder problem that we kept running into at 480i. Another cool thing: Even with inputing HD signals via HDMI and DVD via component, the pure settings held in both modes. So, the other inputs all registered properly when set in pure mode. No additional calibration was necessary to additional inputs. The results are fantastic. the picture is stunning. Fleshtones are perfect. green is not jump[ing out of the screen and yellow tones are phenominal. I'm very pleased with the results. So, ISF is definitely worth it... just don't waste your time with C3 modes. How are the blacks after the calibration? Blacks are significantly improved. It was the single weakness that I had identified in the set and it is so drastically improved that it has completely eased my mind on the problem. Now, don't get me wrong, we aren't looking at CRT-like blacks here, but they are definitely the best I've ever seen on a plasma... and they are so close to CRT levels, that it is almost scary. Of course, when you add the Ideal-Lume bias light into the picture, the black levels seem perfect to me. My ISF guy has never been a fan of Pioneer plasma displays. He tends to favor Panasonic. But after today's calibration, the Elite has won him over. I think it is also interesting to point out that after long periods of time viewing a static test pattern on the screen, we never saw the slightest hint of image retention... very impressive! My panel now has about 400 hours on it. Another weird C3 thing: When trying to adjust grey-scale and black levels via the C3 controls, the deep blacks would always turn either navy blue or a very dark green. this was never an issue in pure mode. The opinion of my calibrator is that the C3 firmware in the 1130 is very flawed. He has had good results with C3 calibrations, but never on a 1130. It is a real shame. He's going to talk to some of his ISF buddies to see if it is just a problem with my panel, but it is looking like a problem on all 1130s. Thank goodness the pure setting works so well. umr 05-20-06, 06:53 AM C3 has been problematic. I would never recommend it for that reason. These sets have all of the controls you need in the user menu. I have calibrated several of these plasmas and the final results are exceptionally good if you have a spectroradiometer to tackle gamut. kosh2258 05-20-06, 10:19 AM Hi, I've lurked here for some time doing my research in prep to dive into my first HD display and, after much reading on the forum, decided to pull the trigger on an 1130. I'm now on a waiting list (not unexpected from what I've been reading here), with no guarantee they'd be able to fill the backorders from what the dealer told me. I took the pragmatic approach that I'm on a list, and if I get the 1130 great, if not, I'd be on a pretty short list to be in line for the follow on (1140?) model. But there is one thing the salesman said, which didn't sound right. He told me Panasonic was making the glass for Pioneer, which was the reason Pio's have been in short supply - because Panasonic has been unable to keep up with their own demand so Pioneer isn't getting serviced. (I still placed an order because the price was below MSRP - his doubtful comment not withstanding. I think he was trying to steer me towards a Panny, but when I didn't bite he dropped it.) I'm 99.9% certain, from what I've read here and at Pioneer's website, that's B.S. and that Pioneer makes their own glass and always has, correct? BTW, I've really enjoyed the reading the commentaries here and gained a lot of useful knowledge from the various members. Ted billybob_jcv 05-20-06, 11:37 AM Your salesman (like most of them) is completely wrong. Pioneer has their own panel manufacturing plants, and also significantly increased their own capacity by purchasing the NEC plasma plants in 2004. I have references, does your salesman? ;) http://www.*******************.com/plasmatvreviews/whomakeswhat.html http://www.nec.co.jp/press/en/0407/0101.html bdbb 05-20-06, 12:05 PM Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade a standard Pio plasma to the elite model? I think I read earlier in this thread that the panel is the same, and only the media box is different. Basically, I'm looking for a way to trade my media box + a few hundred dollars for an elite media box. Also, has anyone found a gamma setting in the service menu on the non-elites? I think he realized he needed to shut up when my response to the comment was just silence. The odd thing was that later on he acknowledged that Pio had bought the NEC manufacturing facilities, so he ended up contradicted himself. I chuckled to myself on that one. Most ISF calibrators charge on a per input basis. Others, like Steve Martin (www.smartcalibration.com), charge a flat fee for fixed pixel displays (Plasma, LCD, etc..). The 1130 ran me $300 and every input is calibrated. When I had my Mitsubishi Diamond RPTV calibrated, on the other hand, it cost over $500 for three inputs and all the various fixes that had to be put in place. Hell, the convergence part of that process took almost 2 hours! -Ben drsiebling 05-21-06, 01:14 AM Nice. Did your calibrator make adjustments to the "Pure" mode thru the SM or regular menu? I am using a Pioneer Elite DV-59avi DVD player connected via HDMI and sending out digital component (YCbCr) at 480i resolution to the panel. I used both Avia, Video Essentials, and Digital Video Essentials calibration DVD's. Interestingly, I could set contrast as high as 50! I'm wondering what experience others have had setting contrast with the avia pattern. Also, I'm confused about the Color Management controls, which I have not used yet. The way I see it, you would use those controls instead of color and tint. If I recall correctly, "Color" adjusts red, green, and blue all at once, and "Tint" adjusts cyan and magenta at once. The Color Management controls provide individual control over red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, and yellow. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has used the Color Management controls and how you adjusted them. Thanks for any input. With the 8300, I get a full image--side-to-side, top-to-bottom; I'm letting the Pio handle all of the format conversions. With my DVD player, however, I have it set up doing 1080i upconversion over component (legacy from my previous set). When it plays back DVDs, even 16:9 DVDs, there is a thin black bar on the right side of the screen where nothing is displayed. It's about a half-inch wide. I used the break-in DVD here for many hours before noticing that the screen wasn't being fully filled. I immediately stopped using the DVD for break-in. I noticed a definite difference in picture between the rest of the screen and that right half-inch, but it has faded over time and is now only visible during full black scenes--that half-inch is a shade lighter. I'm hopeful that it will eventually go away completely. The question, though, is: what (if anything) can be done to make the DVD source fill the entire screen? If you do not know how to get to them....read the manual. Easy fix--thanks for the help. PunkAssOtch 05-22-06, 12:08 AM I finally got my 1130HD plasma delivered, and I've had it for 3 days. A large portion of that time I've been playing the break in disc, avoiding possible IR issues, watching a few stretched DVDs and playing with the settings. When the screen is bright white or green, I can see a "stuck" reddish purplish pixel in the bottom left area. I'm guessing that means the green component of that pixel doesn't work. I can't see it easily under normal conditions. Do I just have to live with it or is there anthing I can do? Secondly, I've had this off for a little bit, but not too long over the past three or four days playing the break in disc. However, the unit has been blinking on and off (the power lights stay blue). The blinking has been increasing in frequency, from a few minutes, up to tens of second in between. I have tried two different DVD players, and S-video and component inputs (I don't have an HDMI player yet). The media box fans are running fine (they are surprisingly loud and the panel buzzes), but the air coming out isn't particularly warm. Nothing is blocking the panel ventilation either. Is it possible it is internally overheating? Has anyone else experienced a flickering problem? I love the picture, but the stuck pixel and the especially the flashing are not what I expected from an Elite. I am going to call the dealer, but honestly I'd like to check directly with Pioneer first. What do you guys think, and what should be my next course of action? Do I have more options (like returning it for another) since it is so new? That is to say, I'm not entirely jazzed about sitting here without a TV for months after waiting months to get it... Am I pushing it too hard or expecting too much? Thanks, Ed sad 1130HD seakwizdom 05-22-06, 08:27 AM New member here with a New 5060. Have been reading this particular thread for info for setting up my tv, and now it is here. Here are my current settings: Main Menu AV Selection: User Contrast: 30 Brightness: -1 Color: -3 Tint: -3 Sharpness: -3 Pro Adjust Pure Cinema: STD Color Detail Color Temp: Low CTI: Off NR DNR: Low MPEG NR: Low I plan on having the set professionally calibrated. I have a couple of questions: 1)Once the break in period is over how should I adjust these settings? I have a DVP-NS75H Sony Dvd Player attached via hdmi as well as Digital Cable via Brighthouse attached via hdmi. 2) Early this am, while breaking in the set, I feel asleep during little nemo. I was asleep for around 6 hours which means 4 hours of the menu screen. I can now (during white or light blue screens) see the menu. I am hoping this is just image retention and not burn in. I am d/ling and burning the break in dvd as we speak. Burn in or image retention?? cronraptor 05-22-06, 10:19 AM While replacing the fans has reduced the noise to a tolerable level, it would still be nice to completely silence it in the standby mode. Is anyone using both either in the same room or different rooms? I am considering making my unfinished basement into a home theater. Right now, i have my pio1130 above the mantle in the living room and its fantastic. But i love a huge image for movies and think about a front proj for blockbusters, etc. The basement is dark and larger than my living room and well suited for a HT. Is anyone able to compare experiences when switching from the plasma to occasional front proj movie watching in terms of pic quality, black level, contrast, etc.? seakwizdom 05-22-06, 02:17 PM Ok I switched My contrast to 25 , bright to +1 , color -12, tint 0. Does anyone know where I can get some test patterns to check for stuck pixels as well as something that will show my screen burn, (light blue or white screen) so that I can take a picture and show you guys/girls on here for an opinion as to whether or not its screen burn or image Ret. Thanks in advance. NemoZorro 05-22-06, 05:28 PM Hey... I like the sound of that! At 51, the whiter than white bars in the Avia test pattern disappeared. I didn't really feel comfortable keeping it that high, so I set it at 30. Mark I thought I would include my settings. When I performed my initial calibration above, I had noticed something when viewing a vertical ramp pattern in Avia: The two bars on the extreme right of the picture were displayed as one black bar. In other words, I was seeing one black vertical bar when there should have been two black bars with different brightness levels (0 and 10 IRE, I think). From my research on gamma, I knew the different settings might allow both bars to be displayed. As it turns out, this was correct. A gamma setting of 3 revealed (ever so slightly) the differences between the bars. I also tried different DRE settings of Dynamic Contrast, Black Level, and ACL, but they had no noticeable effect on this particular pattern. I re-checked the brightness setting with the appropriate test pattern, and I didn't need to change the setting. Next, I wanted to see the effect on the top end of the gray scale, so I checked the contrast pattern in Avia. This time, I could only raise contrast to 42 or so before the whiter than white bars disappeared. I'm wondering what experience others have had setting contrast with the avia pattern, as I just leave it at 30 even though I can raise it higher. I also wanted to try and understand the Color Management controls. I displayed the color bars in Avia and ran the controls up and down, but could not detect any changes in colors. Next, I displayed Avia's full field color patterns and ran the controls up and down. On these patterns, I noticed changes, and they were very subtle. That said, I still do not know what utility the Color Management controls have. Anyone?
